- 0:21Hello everyone.
- 0:22Welcome to Mocktail Minutes.
- 0:23This is Bailey.
- 0:24And this is Brianna.
- 0:26This week I am drinking an Element, it's L M N T, and the raspberry flavor.
- 0:32It's pretty good.
- 0:33I only did half of one because it's a thousand milligrams of sodium and I just...
- 0:38don't need that much sodium today.
- 0:39So half of an element this morning.
- 0:42Very nice.
- 0:43I'm still drinking my ravi.
- 0:44I just ordered more flavors that are supposed to come out on the 15th.
- 0:49So I'm excited.
- 0:51I'm going to actually try The one that Lindsay talked about where she adds like a little bit of cream and stuff to it I'm gonna try one of those and make like a pink drink.
- 1:01Yeah copycat thing.
- 1:02Yeah Yes, and yeah, we put all of our links that we have to any of these Drinks that we're recommending so you can always find them there too, but just kind of a recap on our last few episodes So our last one that we posted last week, it's with the volley owners the volley seltzer So that was just like a fun get to know you and you got to learn more about the volley products And then we recently posted our cocktail hour with our significant others And you guys are loving it.
- 1:32Well, it sounds like you're loving it.
- 1:34I hope you did as much as we did.
- 1:36Yeah, that was fun.
- 1:37I think we should do something like that again.
- 1:39Yes.
- 1:40I, yeah.
- 1:40Let us know if you want us to do it again or you just don't care about us doing those.
- 1:46Yeah, just let us know.
- 1:47It's fine.
- 1:47But this week we're back to our nutrition tips.
- 1:52So we're going to talk about healthy swaps.
- 1:54And I think this kind of goes along good with just talking with the Bali owners, because the Bali shelters are something that is kind of a good swap compared to other options.
- 2:04So we're going to talk more about the food swaps today.
- 2:06I'm excited about this topic because I feel like it's, it's a hot topic.
- 2:11So either people really love it or they really hate it.
- 2:15Either people are like, Oh my gosh, only healthy swaps for literally everything.
- 2:19Or people are like, that is so diet culture.
- 2:22Don't do any of it.
- 2:23So hopefully after this episode, you can find like.
- 2:27Like a happy medium, you know, cause there's definitely a time to do it.
- 2:31And it's, again, it's always about your why behind it.
- 2:34Why are you doing the healthy swaps?
- 2:36So, yeah, I agree.
- 2:38I think it's definitely a hot topic right now.
- 2:41And I've seen a lot, even dietitians kind of say like, Oh, we shouldn't have to do all these healthy swaps.
- 2:47It's diet culture.
- 2:48I'm like, eh, I don't necessarily agree with it.
- 2:51So I don't know.
- 2:52What are your thoughts around just the swaps that are going around TikTok right now?
- 2:57I mean, the first thing that pops into my mind is, I'm just, it's just the cottage cheese because it's everywhere.
- 3:01Okay, like, last summer it was take a carbonated water and add some balsamic vinegar and it tastes like coke.
- 3:08That is ridiculous just because it's probably disgusting.
- 3:12And I feel like if you want to coke that bad, You can have a coca cola, you know, there's lots of different options of coca cola now when it comes to cottage cheese this summer I'm like all about it because first of all, I think I think it's okay.
- 3:27Okay again, it goes back to your why?
- 3:28Are you doing it because you're like, oh I have all this whole list of foods that I can't have So I'm fine trying to find alternatives if that's the case That's probably not that great, but if you're like, hey, I have goals.
- 3:40I want to find more goal supportive ways to eat.
- 3:43I want to, you know, increase nutrients in my meals.
- 3:45Like, let me think of common things that I eat and how I can like bump up the nutrients.
- 3:49I don't think that's bad.
- 3:51I agree.
- 3:52Especially like you were saying, it's adding nutrients.
- 3:55To it and when you take it from that point of view instead of just being like, oh, I can never have ice cream I can only have cottage cheese ice cream I feel like it's coming from a much better place Like you said deciding why are we doing this in the first place if you're someone who's struggling to get in protein?
- 4:11Or if you're someone who you just want to balance your blood sugars a little better.
- 4:15I think it's a great option But if you're someone like me who's allergic to dairy, yeah, that's not a great option.
- 4:21So Yeah, kind of weighing it out there.
- 4:25So I, I think again, it's just how are we thinking about these swaps?
- 4:30In the first place.
- 4:31Is it because we're telling ourself we can never have ice cream or is it because we're just seeing how we can feel better, but still enjoy foods.
- 4:40We really like if you enjoy your cottage cheese, ice cream, eat it.
- 4:44There's nothing wrong with that.
- 4:45It doesn't have to be diet culture.
- 4:47Right, I did a story on this like not too long back because I kept seeing the whole cottage cheese thing come up and like Certain dietitians I follow are like, yeah, this is awesome And then other ones that I usually align with are like this is terrible and I was like, okay First of all, it is so dependent on the person.
- 5:06Let's have a check in.
- 5:07Like, you know, I think of things typically like cauliflower rice.
- 5:10I'm going to be honest, rice probably tastes better.
- 5:14Okay.
- 5:14The majority of people can probably say rice tastes better, but if you're like, I actually really like cauliflower rice.
- 5:21Then have cauliflower rice.
- 5:23It's almost like we're taking people's food preferences out of it.
- 5:27And just because cauliflower rice can be a substitute for a regular rice doesn't mean that if you eat it, you're on a diet or that you don't eat carbs or that you're restricting rice.
- 5:39You know what I mean?
- 5:40Like it's all about food preference.
- 5:41Like if that's what you really like, do it.
- 5:43And I felt this way like I think it depends on where you're at with your journey, because I used to be super against smoothies, because smoothies was something I would do when I was like hardcore dieting, and they weren't like nutritious smoothies, they were like slim fast smoothies, you know?
- 5:57And so for me, I always associated like, oh, smoothies is dieting, smoothies is dieting, and then eventually I got to a place where I was like, okay, I like smoothies again, I'm having a nutrient filled smoothie.
- 6:08I can drink smoothies and I don't feel like I'm dieting.
- 6:10You know, it's almost like when people are like, Oh, are you going to order a salad at a restaurant?
- 6:13Yeah, I am because they taste way better at a restaurant.
- 6:16Cause I'm never going to have all 50 ingredients.
- 6:19Yes.
- 6:19You know what I mean?
- 6:20So it's just like your why behind it.
- 6:21I'm not ordering salad.
- 6:22Cause I'm like, Oh, I don't want to eat anything and ordering it because it's delicious.
- 6:27And I exactly what you're saying too.
- 6:29I don't eat salads at home either.
- 6:32They do not taste the same.
- 6:34So if I'm at a restaurant, yeah, I will usually get a salad.
- 6:38That's like my side.
- 6:39I don't get it as a meal.
- 6:41They are not super filling to me as a meal.
- 6:44But when we're out to eat too, that's when we're usually with other people.
- 6:48So then everyone's like, Oh, all you eat is salads.
- 6:50I'm like, no, I just happen to eat them when we're always out together because We're out at a restaurant and I don't always like their other vegetables.
- 6:59So salad's nice and easy and it tastes better and they serve it to you on a cold plate.
- 7:03I don't have that at home.
- 7:05Oh yeah, they do.
- 7:06I think that is also really appealing, the cold plate.
- 7:09Yeah, so it's all about your why behind it and then I think it's okay, like, I feel like people are kind of caught up in the.
- 7:17Well, I don't want to be diet culture, so I'm just not going to do any of these healthy, like, or, you know, healthier, more nutrient, nutrient swaps, whatever you want to call them.
- 7:25I'm not going to do it because I don't want to be diet culture, but then they're kind of giving up, like, their food preferences.
- 7:30Mm hmm.
- 7:31I like how you say the nutrient swaps, too.
- 7:33I think that would kind of be a better way to look at it, at just, nutrient swaps.
- 7:37How can we do this differently?
- 7:38And even thinking about the cauliflower rice, if you're just wanting to increase your vegetables, like I don't crave cauliflower, let's be honest.
- 7:46It's not like something I crave, but I also know I'd like to get a variety of vegetables in.
- 7:51I also know I just don't love vegetables all the time.
- 7:55I like them cooked better than raw.
- 7:56So if I'm making like a stir fry or tater tot casserole or anything with ground beef, I just add cauliflower rice to it.
- 8:03To up my vegetable intake.
- 8:05Simple as that.
- 8:07And yeah, so I love it.
- 8:09It's like one of my goals.
- 8:11Yes.
- 8:11Yes.
- 8:12I like the nutrient swap kind of point of view that you created there.
- 8:16And even the things like the black bean brownies.
- 8:19So those are pretty popular.
- 8:20I've actually haven't made them yet.
- 8:21Have you?
- 8:22I haven't.
- 8:23And I, I actually saved one of the videos that I saw.
- 8:26Cause I was like, I'm going to try this, but I haven't.
- 8:29I never remember.
- 8:31Mine's saved on Instagram.
- 8:34I have probably like a thousand different saved posts.
- 8:37And they just get lost so I never do it again.
- 8:39But I'm thinking about trying out some of these just to do like a review of them like I've been seeing going around.
- 8:44Because I think it also has to do with like the taste, you know?
- 8:49For example, I made like French onion dip the other day with cottage cheese, blended cottage cheese, and it was actually delicious.
- 8:55Like my whole family loved it.
- 8:56My husband loved it.
- 8:57My kids even ate it.
- 8:58My dad ate it, which is saying something cause he doesn't.
- 9:02He like takes everything I say and does the exact opposite, but even he loved it.
- 9:06And I'm like, okay, you know what?
- 9:07This is actually a good swap for everyone.
- 9:10They all loved the taste.
- 9:11Why not?
- 9:12Extra protein.
- 9:12Yeah.
- 9:13You know, so my kids, yeah, maybe they're dipping chips in it, but you know, I, at least I know they're getting some extra protein.
- 9:18And for me, it helps because I like to have high protein snacks now.
- 9:22If I were to have made it and it just tastes horrible, well, I'm not going to continue to make it.
- 9:27I'm going to allow myself to have, you know, regular French onion dip.
- 9:31Or maybe I'll try half and half, you know, of like, just, but it's like, it depends on your goals.
- 9:36And when I say goals, I don't always mean like your weight loss and fat loss goals.
- 9:40But maybe like you were talking about, like, I try to eat more vegetables.
- 9:43I need to increase this.
- 9:45Well, if that's your goal, that's a great goal.
- 9:47How can you do that?
- 9:48Like, sometimes it's necessary to make those swaps, so not everything that you do is diet culture.
- 9:53I mean, there is another side that we need to think about, you know, living a healthful life.
- 9:58There are certain things that we know that we need.
- 10:00We need more fiber.
- 10:01We need more protein.
- 10:02We need all this to live.
- 10:04a healthy and long life.
- 10:06Yeah.
- 10:07We should do like a nutrient dense swap series together.
- 10:10That would be fun.
- 10:11Just sharing all these different things.
- 10:14Another one I really like that came across Tik TOK of course is the cloud bread.
- 10:20And so that one, like it's literally just using egg whites and you make it fluffy and you break it.
- 10:25And it's basically like egg white bread.
- 10:28So that's another thing that I was kind of going around that was.
- 10:30Oh, this is healthy for you.
- 10:32Oh, this is also diet culture.
- 10:34No, this was just a way to up my protein without getting, like, chicken fatigued.
- 10:39I don't know.
- 10:40Yeah, I mean, that's a good point.
- 10:42Also, I feel like that would be delicious because it's like angel food cake.
- 10:45It's so soft and it's just, like, biting into a cloud.
- 10:50I love it.
- 10:50Like, I would just eat the cloud bread by itself sometimes.
- 10:55Yeah.
- 10:56It's good.
- 10:58I mean, why not?
- 10:59You know, it doesn't have to be like, I'm already, I haven't tried it, but I'm thinking like, my kids really love like the angel food cake with the strawberries and the whipped cream.
- 11:06You know, it's like something we always do when we do family barbecues.
- 11:09I'm like, let me try the angel bread.
- 11:10Like if they love it, then why not?
- 11:14You know, it's not that I don't allow them to have it.
- 11:16I just said I make them angel food cake, you know what I mean?
- 11:19But it's like, how can we.
- 11:20How can we fit in more nutrient dense food into our lives in a way that feels good because I think something else is, thinking when you get past the whole dieting aspect, you really start to make food choices based on like what feels good in your body and like what you want to feel like and 10 times out of 10 more nutrient dense foods is going to feel better.
- 11:40So if you enjoy them Do it.
- 11:42It's okay.
- 11:42It's not saying that you can't ever, you know, go out to eat and have your regular cake again.
- 11:47Absolutely do it.
- 11:48But, finding swaps isn't a bad thing.
- 11:50I just feel like it's such a taboo thing.
- 11:52It's almost like wanting to lose weight.
- 11:55You know, we did our whole episode about like weight loss is okay.
- 11:58You know, it's always your why behind it.
- 12:00But You know, I get that we're being much more aware of disordered eating habits.
- 12:06I love that.
- 12:07But I also think it's now kind of making people feel a little bit weird who are like, I want to choose the more nutrient dense foods, you know?
- 12:15Yeah, I agree.
- 12:16I think, yes, we should definitely do that swap series just to kind of bring.
- 12:21Enlightenment the topic.
- 12:24And with this being said to in our episode with the guys that Josh had told everyone that I drug him with vegetables.
- 12:31So non consensual.
- 12:34Yeah, we didn't really talk about it too much on there, but what are your thoughts on hiding vegetables, whether it's for kids or Your adult partner or for yourself, you know, this is another thing that I see black and white on, social media, I, there's a lot of pediatric dietitians that are like, don't do this because it can create an unhealthy relationship with food with your kids.
- 13:00Okay, I get it because we want our kids to like the foods that we're feeding them.
- 13:04You know, we.
- 13:06Here's some broccoli.
- 13:07This is what it looks like.
- 13:08Enjoy it.
- 13:08So I totally get it, but I'm always about how can I up the nutrients in my kids food, especially because it's my responsibility right now, you know?
- 13:19And so I'm like, Hey, if we're making pizza at home, let's add some extra veggies.
- 13:23My kids.
- 13:25They like veggies, I will say, like, they like veggies, so I'm, I'm lucky there, but they are never going to pick up a piece of pizza, at least right now, where they're at in their life, that has vegetables on it and eat it.
- 13:36That's not what pizza is to them, so, you know, adding some extra protein in the sauce or some veggies in the sauce.
- 13:43They love it.
- 13:43I'm happy with it.
- 13:44Why not?
- 13:45Yeah.
- 13:46No, I completely agree.
- 13:48And it doesn't necessarily have to be like, yeah, he says I'm dragging him and he didn't know for the first few times.
- 13:56He liked it and I wasn't like forcing it and I did eventually tell him after he told me you liked it.
- 14:04So I think, yeah, you can let people know what they're eating, but also just show like we can incorporate these different vegetables, increase the nutrients, and we don't have to make our food taste terrible.
- 14:17I mean, we hear all the time where it's like, if it tastes good, it can't be good for you.
- 14:21Yeah, this tastes good.
- 14:22It must not be good.
- 14:23And I have to say like, that is so not true because that's what, first of all, my family, I love them to death, but they are very stuck in their ways.
- 14:31They have a very particular way of eating.
- 14:33It's a very like their thoughts on vegetables is like cornbread is a vegetable.
- 14:41And baked beans, like that's their vegetable, right?
- 14:43So I was like, okay, I got to help these people out here.
- 14:46And every time I make something, they love it.
- 14:50and I'm always, you know, incorporate like, yeah, I sprouts.
- 14:54I'm probably doi but you know what?
- 14:56They'r sprouts.
- 14:57You know what I it's like that, that give people don't usually start to and we know that if you were just to increase the nutrients in your food, increase the variety in your diet, that that could be like a really good protective factor.
- 15:09So I'm like all about it now.
- 15:12Am I going to force my kids to have cauliflower crust only pizza if they despise it?
- 15:16No.
- 15:17Cause then, you know, that is creating an unhealthy relationship for food, but I'm going to add stuff to the sauce.
- 15:23I do it with all kinds of stuff and they love it.
- 15:25One day they'll cook for themselves and they can decide what they're gonna eat.
- 15:29But, right now they love it and they're not dying.
- 15:33And right now like.
- 15:34As you being a parent, as parents, it's the parents role to provide the food.
- 15:39So you decide what they're eating, usually like when, most of the time.
- 15:46And then the kids get to decide how much, and then they're going to decide if they want to try it or not.
- 15:51Kids, if you are providing the food, kids are usually not going to starve.
- 15:55They, they might not eat it the first time you introduce it, but continually to introduce it is going to be so helpful.
- 16:05And I'm sure as parents, it can be super frustrating.
- 16:07Again, I don't have kids, so I don't have first hand experience with this.
- 16:10But...
- 16:11The more you introduce it, the more they're going to get used to it, feel comfortable, and it can even be just giving them one piece of broccoli.
- 16:18We don't have to fill their plates with broccoli every time.
- 16:23Just kind of getting them used to that.
- 16:24So yeah, I agree.
- 16:25I think it's Fine to throw in the vegetables, add it to your spaghetti sauce, add it to your tater tot casserole, whatever you need to do.
- 16:34I especially like stir fries because you can throw so many different vegetables in there.
- 16:39There's everything.
- 16:41Oh yeah.
- 16:41Well, and no, you don't have kids, but having, feeding a boyfriend is very similar to feeding kids.
- 16:47Just saying it out.
- 16:48So you're good to practice.
- 16:51And my kids are getting to the age, at least my older one is where he's like, he's kind of wanting to be helpful in the kitchen, which I definitely think is something that really helps as well.
- 16:58And, he'll ask me like, Oh, why are you adding this?
- 17:01Why are you adding that?
- 17:01And I never, I'm really careful about the things that I say.
- 17:05I'm not, you know, like.
- 17:06The other night I was, I was adding vegetables to like, you know, it's like blenderizing it to like be a sauce, right?
- 17:12Well, why are you adding that?
- 17:13I was like, oh, I just want to add more veggies, you know, and he was like, Oh, is regular sauce bad?
- 17:18I'm like, no, and I always try to be like, no, it's not bad.
- 17:20There's nothing wrong with it.
- 17:21There's plenty of nights.
- 17:22We have just the regular sauce.
- 17:23I just, I have all these extra vegetables and I want to increase the amount of vegetables we're eating.
- 17:29So, you know, it's just like, you're, I think really.
- 17:33Not only your mentality behind it, but how you talk about it is also really important.
- 17:37the conversation around it is going to make a big difference too.
- 17:40And I will say Josh has definitely expanded his meals and his palette of what he'll eat.
- 17:46And he'll, he's getting the PHFF down.
- 17:49So he knows he's doing pretty good about putting meals together.
- 17:53We tag team it, but.
- 17:55Yeah, it's something that you're never going to regret, like, you're never going to regret having more variety in your diet, you know, you're never going to regret like finding ways to increase protein, especially as we age.
- 18:07It's just not a bad thing, you know, I just think yeah, again, if you're doing all this stuff, because you don't allow yourself to have regular things or the way things are normally prepared.
- 18:17Okay, well, then you need to check in with yourself, but if you like these alternative swaps, or you like adding stuff in do it.
- 18:25I mean, I like doing it, you know, and you never, the thing is, I always tell people is like, just try it.
- 18:29You never know what you're going to like or dislike.
- 18:32And if you absolutely hate it, okay, don't do it.
- 18:34You know, you make cottage cheese ice cream.
- 18:36Don't trick yourself into believing you love it when you really just want some ice cream.
- 18:40You know, I felt that way about Halo Top.
- 18:43It gets a really bad rap.
- 18:44I actually really liked it.
- 18:47And I used to get it from Costco and I actually really enjoyed it.
- 18:50And like my husband hates it.
- 18:51hates it.
- 18:52And so I'm like, okay, you should probably just have real ice cream, you know, but like for me, I actually like it, you know, and then I remember like checking out one time and someone was like, Oh, is this like, you know, your tree?
- 19:02And I was like, well, yeah, I mean, it's, I have it for dessert, but I actually really do like it, you know, like, as opposed to my husband, who's like Ben and Jerry's, I mean, do it.
- 19:10Ben and Jerry's is delicious.
- 19:11You know what I mean?
- 19:12I will say if there's Halo Top and Ben and Jerry's by each other, I'll probably get the Ben and Jerry's, but they don't sell the big Ben and Jerry's pack at Costco.
- 19:23Yeah.
- 19:25Yeah, we gotta get, we gotta get all the options.
- 19:26And speaking of that, I've also found a great.
- 19:30They have like desserts.
- 19:31It's called belly brands.
- 19:32Have you seen them on instagram?
- 19:35So I saw them kind of pop up one day and they have some collagen added to Their foods so I made their brownies over the weekend.
- 19:45They Were delicious and they have quality ingredients.
- 19:48I'm like That's a good option too.
- 19:51I mean, yeah, I probably will still buy Duncan Hines every once in a while, but this is also a better alternative.
- 19:58I guess with all these swaps too, we felt like it was important to bring up gluten free and dairy free diets.
- 20:05Some people are following these for whatever reason it is.
- 20:09I think it's important to note here that just because you are eating dairy free or you're doing gluten free, That does not mean you have to buy every box of food or every dairy free swap out there.
- 20:25Just because it's dairy free, just because it's gluten free does not mean it is healthier.
- 20:30They can be still very highly processed, especially some of these like dairy free cheeses.
- 20:35There are some brands that I do love that have better ingredients.
- 20:40But also it comes down to, once you eat more whole foods, you don't necessarily need to have every single swap out there.
- 20:48I buy cream cheese, like the Maico's, Maioco's, however you say it.
- 20:52I buy that brand sometimes.
- 20:54I don't buy it every week because it's freaking expensive.
- 20:58So, I just want to give a little hope to people that, cause I do know some people that are going dairy free for health reasons.
- 21:06They know they feel better, they know they need to do it.
- 21:08That does not mean you need to buy all the dairy free cream cheese, cheese.
- 21:13cottage cheese, be cool if there wasn't cottage cheese like sour cream, all that kind of stuff.
- 21:17Like you don't have to buy all that.
- 21:19Even pizzas.
- 21:19I mean, they're like 10 for like a Jack size pizza.
- 21:24That's crazy.
- 21:25I'm not buying pizza every week because of that.
- 21:28No.
- 21:28And another good thing to point out is just because like you said, it's dairy free or gluten free.
- 21:34I think a lot of people associate that with being More healthy.
- 21:38So automatically, I mean, they see it like, Oh, it's, you know, our keto, keto, gluten free, dairy free, like they see these labels on foods and in their mind, it's like, Okay, that's the more healthy version of whatever this is.
- 21:51This is a more healthy cracker or more healthy yogurt or whatever it is because it's not dairy or gluten and that's not always the case.
- 22:00Like you said, it's usually more processed because it has certain food components taken out of it, but it's still made to taste very similar to having those things in it.
- 22:11So I think just don't get caught up on labels.
- 22:14I think we might have An episode on labels coming up soon or food loop something like that But that is such a common thing.
- 22:21I see.
- 22:21I mean I had a friend one time Growing up.
- 22:25It was when it was like right after high school She like got on this vegan kick and she was like It's better for your body we need to be vegan no animal products Like this is the way we were meant to live right all this stuff And she would constantly buy hot cheetos and oreos and not that hot cheetos and oreos are bad But I was like, you know, for someone who's like, I'm vegan, like I only put certain things in my body.
- 22:49I was like, Oh, why are you, she's like, Oh, they're vegan.
- 22:51Like, did you know Oreos are vegan?
- 22:53Did you know Hot Cheetos are vegan?
- 22:54I was like, well, kind of makes sense.
- 22:55Cause I mean, I didn't think that, you know, Hot Cheetos.
- 23:00I had a lot of animal products in it like that just you know, but whatever but and so she would like constantly she really got hyper focused on finding foods that were vegan like labeled vegan because they were healthier and really in reality and like I Not really, you know, I don't really think of Oreos and hot Cheetos as like real nutrient dense foods that I'm putting into you know this Sanctuary of a temple of my vegan body, you know what I mean?
- 23:27Like, I mean, yeah, I'll eat them, but I'm definitely not eating them because they're vegan.
- 23:30You know what I mean?
- 23:31So, I just think people get really focused on like, Oh, if they're not full of dairy, or they're not full of gluten, or they're not this, like, it's, they're, make them automatically healthy, and that's...
- 23:42That's mostly marketing, to be honest.
- 23:46It's the marketing.
- 23:47I say it all the time.
- 23:48Food companies, dieting programs.
- 23:50They have stellar marketing campaigns.
- 23:53I mean, they're supposed to, they want to sell their product.
- 23:57If only I could market myself as an addition to all of you.
- 24:01Right.
- 24:02Let's just stand on this door.
- 24:05Yeah, here I am.
- 24:06Yeah, no, it's and I get it like and I see why people do it like people are being more conscious of their health And I really it honestly always comes back to I feel like people just don't understand food and they don't understand how to eat And so I'm not knocking anyone for trying to be healthier trying to eat Like in a better way.
- 24:26I just feel like people do not know.
- 24:28I mean, even my family, I feel like doesn't know and I live with them.
- 24:32You know, my family sees me all the time and you know, my grandpa, he got diagnosed with diabetes like a couple years ago.
- 24:37He's, he's pretty old.
- 24:38He's a lot older now.
- 24:40I mean, yeah, he's like in his eighties.
- 24:42So, you know, and we went, we went out to lunch the other day and my grandma was like, don't be eating all that chicken.
- 24:49It's going to spike your blood sugar.
- 24:51You know, like she was like so adamant on it.
- 24:53And I was like, chicken doesn't spike your blood sugar, but she like just doesn't know.
- 24:58And I've had to talk with her multiple times about like, Hey, like, let's, you know, do this, but it's just people grow up and they.
- 25:04They just learn food behaviors from who they're around.
- 25:07And then nowadays we get a lot of information and mostly false information from tech talk and Instagram.
- 25:14And so people are trying to be more health conscious and then they end up.
- 25:18Not doing the most health conscious stuff and it's not their fault.
- 25:21And that's what we're here for.
- 25:23We are here to clarify everything, help you clarify.
- 25:27This is what we went to school for.
- 25:28So don't feel like.
- 25:30Bad.
- 25:31If you don't know this, we went to school for this.
- 25:34This is our job.
- 25:35I mean, that's like me feeling bad for not knowing about loans.
- 25:39I don't do anything with the loans because I pay the bills.
- 25:42Like, that's what I know.
- 25:44I pay my monthly amount.
- 25:46But yeah, that's, that's what we're here for.
- 25:48So please always just ask questions.
- 25:51We're never here to judge and we hope these episodes just continue to help you out in this area and provide more clarity rather than more confusion.
- 26:01So just to kind of close this episode out, we wanted to share some of our favorite.
- 26:06In some ways we've made our foods more nutrient dense, make us feel better.
- 26:12So like one thing for me is doing avocado oil instead of a vegetable oil for baking.
- 26:17That's a common one I get asked about.
- 26:19I will add protein powder to various things.
- 26:22Recently I made rice crispy treats and.
- 26:25I added protein powder to those and they were actually really good.
- 26:29And it made them almost like a creamier taste.
- 26:33They were even Josh approved.
- 26:34His friend liked them.
- 26:36So I mean, I told you like kids.
- 26:41Exactly.
- 26:41Yeah.
- 26:42It's not like eating a protein bar.
- 26:44Obviously it's still more of like a treat, but it kind of helps with that blood sugar control.
- 26:48So doing different things like that.
- 26:50And then also, For dips, I'll use vegetables again.
- 26:54It's not a dieting thing saying I never eat chips, but if I'm trying to increase my vegetable intake, then yeah, I will use carrots or bell peppers with a dip.
- 27:04I do that too, especially like a lot of queso dips are really big here in Texas.
- 27:09You can get them like literally at any restaurant, all sorts of queso.
- 27:11I always get them with a side of cucumbers because I love my queso and I not in a diety way.
- 27:17I do it because I like the taste and yeah, more vegetables.
- 27:20Yeah, that's not a very bad thing.
- 27:21What else?
- 27:22I do a lot of swaps with Greek yogurt.
- 27:23Like, I, or I always try to find food to put Greek yogurt in.
- 27:26Like, I will put them in pancakes smoothies.
- 27:29Like, I've used Greek yogurt in place of sour cream for stuff.
- 27:34Because it, the plain Greek yogurt tastes very similar.
- 27:37I do that.
- 27:38I mean, I should be a cottage cheese spokesperson.
- 27:42Okay.
- 27:44I put it in everything.
- 27:45I make savory stuff with it.
- 27:46I make it with my dips.
- 27:48I add it to pizza sauce, I add it to spaghetti sauce what else do I do?
- 27:53And then the, the traditional, or the traditional, but the right, like, chia seeds.
- 27:57I will add chia seeds to everything again, and I always have like a little container with me, especially if like you're traveling, you know, like for example, yogurt, that's another good swap, you know, yogurt usually is pretty high in sugar.
- 28:09So when, when you're traveling, you can't really control always what kind of brands that hotels have.
- 28:14So I'll add some collagen and chia seeds to it instead of stressing about stressing about the brand of yogurt, like just that sort of thing.
- 28:20So, and then the collagen packets are always good to have.
- 28:25Yeah, I guess another one I get asked about, too, is turkey burger instead of.
- 28:30regular burger.
- 28:32My thought is you can have either one you want.
- 28:35I do buy turkey burger to get variety within my week because I don't want to eat ground beef every day.
- 28:41So yeah, I'll do ground beef, I do ground turkey, I do chicken, I do pork, and I do fish throughout the week.
- 28:48So kind of getting that variety doesn't mean necessarily never having beef.
- 28:53It's just, it's a different type of meat.
- 28:54It's like asking chicken versus.
- 28:57Ground beef.
- 28:59Yeah.
- 28:59Yeah.
- 29:00It just depends on like your day, you know, like what do I need more of today?
- 29:04That sort of thing.
- 29:05That's a good one.
- 29:05I also, I was gonna say black beans.
- 29:09I used to add black beans to a lot of stuff.
- 29:11Like I used to add them to, you said turkey and it reminded me of turkey burgers and then it reminded me of black beans, I add black beans to salads.
- 29:17I do all kinds of stuff with black beans.
- 29:21I haven't done in a while because I'm being pretty lazy, but those are another good thing.
- 29:25Honestly, I think a good takeaway from this is yeah, like we're talking about swaps and stuff like that, but start thinking of.
- 29:33What should I add like how can I add things to this to make it better or to make it more nutrient dense or make it more Goal supportive or whatever it is I think that's a good way to look at it because then it kind of sparks like oh What can I add to this or that and yeah swapping fully things out?
- 29:49Mm I think this is a good episode.
- 29:51Hopefully you guys liked it If we missed any swaps or we missed any like trends that you guys have heard and you want to know more about DMS drop them in the comments Whatever.
- 30:02And we'll address them and talk about them because there really is so many.

- 30:14But yeah, let us know if there's any fun ones you've heard of you tried that you like send us a DM and we can give our thoughts.
- 30:21We can try it.
- 30:22We can add it to our series and we hope you tune in next week.

- 30:27Bye.
