- 0:20SPEAKER_02: Welcome to Between the Briefs podcast.
- 0:22SPEAKER_02: Today on the show we have Oliver Craddock, who is the general manager of Porsche Club Great Britain, and we are thrilled to have him here today.
- 0:30SPEAKER_02: So welcome along, Ollie.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: Thanks for having me, Steph.
- 0:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no worries at all.
- 0:34SPEAKER_02: Um, so how was your journey here?
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: Wet.
- 0:37SPEAKER_02: It's not a great day, is it?
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: It's not a great day at all.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: No, no, no, very, very wet.
- 0:41SPEAKER_02: Not good for performance cars.
- 0:43SPEAKER_02: No, not at all.
- 0:44SPEAKER_02: Okay, well, I wanted to start straight in with you and ask you what is the biggest misconception people have about a Porsche car owner?
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: Good question.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: I think it's cost.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: Um I think it's cost.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: And when I say cost, I'm not necessarily talking about money.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: They are expensive cars.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: Well, they certainly are now.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: Um, and even you know, if you're buying new, you're buying used.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: Um, I think there's a certain degree of cost of ownership these days, and whether it's from driving your car, using your car, you know, they are more expensive to buy, they're more expensive to maintain.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: So you're going to be bitten at some point.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: I know I have.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: Um, but then there's the other side of things where people might not use their car as much because it's part of a collection, it's part of a you know, it's a very, very special car.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: And they do exist.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: Um, but people, they're the cost trade-off is that they're not gonna get to drive them or enjoy them as they were intended.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and that's okay.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: I mean, you know, it some of these cars deserve to be in these collections, but you know, not getting them out, not using them, I think ultimately that's that you're gonna have a cost trade-off somewhere.
- 1:59SPEAKER_02: And what what is it about Porsche that gets people so obsessed by them though?
- 2:03SPEAKER_02: What is it about the brand?
- 2:05SPEAKER_02: You know, what that people are I must have a Porsche.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: Well, I I I can only speak for myself.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: I've loved the brand since I was about 11 years old.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: I mean, for me, it I I've always been obsessed with cars, but I really fell into the brand.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: I think it was a Saturday morning, I was 11 years old, and my dad was like, Come with me, I've got something to show you in the garage.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: And I was like, I'm too busy watching cartoons go away.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: Um, but eventually when he got me out, I think I was still wearing my pajamas, um, he opened the garage door, and in there was a granite green 9-11.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: Uh, it was a G model uh 80s car, and I didn't even bother getting changed.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: We just he had to take me out for a drive.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: It was just an amazing experience.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: Um, so people get obsessed for different reasons.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: I've always been totally into the brand, but I think things have changed as time's gone on.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: You know, these cars used to be very attainable for people, they were very affordable, you know.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: They they they were made in large numbers and they depreciated like any other car.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: Yes, they were more expensive than your Toyota Corolla, but they were attainable for people.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: As time's sort of gone on, they have started to touch the realms of you know, very collectible, people don't want to drive them as much, they're a bit worried about driving them in the rain.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: Um and it it it it is a shame.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: So, you know, the obsession.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: Why do people get obsessed with these cars?
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: They have got this cult status, they've got this unbelievable cult status, but that has come from from the driving, from being used, from being seen, from whether you're a 11-year-old kid and you see one going down the street, you you know, it it's an attainable dream.
- 3:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and they're inspirational, aren't they?
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: Well, they are, they are, but whereas, you know, maybe sort of the the the Lamborghini market and Ferrari, not really been my sort of thing, you know, those are cars that you won't see every day.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: You know, they are collectible cars, you know.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: Whereas Porsche has always been, you know, you want to have a high performance car, you can at some point in your life afford one of these vehicles.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: And it doesn't matter if you're a multi-million pound stockbroker or you know, you you might just have a day job, you know, working in Tesco's.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: At some point, you could afford to have one of these vehicles.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: But things have changed slightly now, where you know they they are sort of moving from that that sort of cult status driver focused to where people are more involved about just owning them, protecting them.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and it I think it's a bit of a shame, but they've always had that obsession.
- 4:44SPEAKER_02: But you've got a green Porsche, haven't you?
- 4:46SPEAKER_02: Do you want to tell me a bit of the story about how that came about?
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, I can do.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: Um, well, as I said, my my sort of ownership really started quite a while ago, it was about 20 years ago.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: I used to work for BMW, right?
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: And I had a fancy company car, but I always wanted something that was a bit more fun.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: And so my first sort of entry into the brand was a G Series um 1988 Targa, and it was white, and it was great, and it was 12.5 grand, and you know, people just didn't, you know, they didn't keep these cars as precious as they do today.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so I had this car, I did trade up for uh a 993 uh six to twelve months later.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: Um, but then when I started working for myself, um, I had to invest a lot more in the business.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: So all of my toys had to go, and it took 15 years before I had the opportunity to get back in one.
- 5:48SPEAKER_02: But it's interesting that that was always a goal.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: It was for me, it always was.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: Um, I mean, cars have always been my hobby, yeah.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: Um, and sort of driving the sort of road trips around it, it's the experiences that you can get and the places that you can visit while driving these cars.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: For me, that was what it was always about.
- 6:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: And so when I had the opportunity to get back in one, yeah, I just I couldn't wait.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: But coming back to my car, um, it was an odd story, really.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: I was still um still building up the business and I uh I was driving a BMW One series, it wasn't a company car this time, it was my own vehicle.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: But a friend of mine and I we went to the Nurbering on a road trip.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: That's pretty cool.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: It was pretty cool.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: It was a UK booked track day, yeah.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: And um after we'd done a couple of laps, we just we peeled off, we wanted to come have a cup of coffee, and there's this really great viewing point.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: It's about halfway around the circuit, big car park.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: And typically a lot of people go there because sometimes cars can go a little bit sideways or even come off the circuit there, so people are always there to wait for it.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: Um, but while we were walking around the car park, there was this bright green 911, and from a distance I was thought, oh you know, GT3, you know, it's a 997, it's in that colour, it's going to be a GT3 RS.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: But it was only when I got closer that I thought, oh, it's not.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: It's a it's a turbo.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: Um, and that was that.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: That was it, didn't think anything more of it, and uh finished the rest of that trip and away we went two and a half years down the line.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: So I'd just got back into Porsche ownership at this point, and I'd had a 997 GTS for about a year, and I went and did another track day, but this time it was at Donington.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: And two and a half years down, uh, we were doing our sighting laps of the circuit, and just this flash of green came past again.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: And I mean I recognised the silhouette immediately, and I thought it's gotta be the same car.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: Um, so once we got back in from doing our sighting laps, I ran down the pits trying to find this car and find the owner, and uh and I met the guy, and he was a he was a smashing guy, and um you know we got on really, really well and told me all about it, and I said, Is it the original colour?
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: And yes, it was, and and I was just you know, I was completely you know all over it.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: I said, Oh you know, were you in Germany a couple of years ago?
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: And he's like, Yeah, he said, What an interesting day that was because it it was an interesting day, but I won't go into that now.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: And uh being my interest, but I said to him, I said, could you take me out for a ride?
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: I said, because I've never been in a turbo, and I'd been in plenty of Porsches, you know, friends of mine had had them, my dad had had them, obviously, um, my my uncle had had had one or two, yeah, and so I'd but I'd never ever been in a in a turbo, which is what this car was.
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: So he said, Yeah, he said, you know, grab your helmet, jumped in the car, and I was just blown away.
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: I was blown away by the performance of this thing.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: It was the same model as my car, but just a completely different engine, and it was chalk and cheese, it was just them incredible.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: So after that, I was like, I've I've got to get one of these cars, but I I just couldn't afford it.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: But I stayed in touch with him because we just got, as I said, we got on so well.
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: And uh eventually, when uh you know I had the opportunity to trade up and get into one of these cars, I messaged him and I knew he wasn't gonna sell me his.
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: I mean, he he told me that at the race.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: He said, I'm never selling this car.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: Um, so I I basically went to him and said, Look, I'm you know, I need your help, you know, I'm looking for one of these.
- 9:25SPEAKER_00: Is there anything particular I should look for?
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: Because when you're buying these cars, you've got to be quite careful with regards to maintenance, condition.
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: You know, there are certain things that you can get tripped up on.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: And to be fair, I I've got tripped up many times.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: But he, you know, he's like, Hey Ollie, great to hear from you, and this, that, and the other.
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: And you know, we just we exchanged messages for a while, and uh eventually he actually just said, Um, well, I'm thinking about selling the car.
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: And I said, Really?
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: He said, Yeah, he said, Um, you might want to come and see it.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: So, well, I don't need to come and see it.
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: Um No way.
- 9:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I didn't know that.
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: But it was it was it was it it was interesting because then he gave me the figure, and it was obviously a lot more than I you know I could afford out of time.
- 10:11SPEAKER_00: And I was like, right, you know, so I ended up you know selling a watch and a guitar, and uh, I think I even got down to the the point of looking for loose change down the back of the sofa.
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: Um, but eventually we made this we made this deal happen, and uh yeah, the last five years is it's this car has been in in my custody.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: I have the new custodian of it.
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: Um but it's it's an amazing car, um and bright green, and one of the reasons why that's quite special for me is part of the story that I've missed is before I'd got into a uh a GTS and I still had my BMW.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: This was so this is probably six months after the Nurbering when I'd first seen that car.
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: And I'd completely forgotten about it because at the time I was, you know, Porsche ownership for me was just it wasn't possible.
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: And uh I remember going through the sort of DVLA's website, you know, I was I was looking for a private plate for my BMW, and a friend of mine, um, we were uh we used to play Open Mic together, and he knows that I'm a massive Green Day fan.
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: And anyway, I found this number plate that uh very much looked like Green Day, you know, G R53 D A Y.
- 11:24SPEAKER_00: And uh it wasn't a lot of money, it was a couple hundred quid, and I sent it, sent it to my friend, and uh he went, all he said, we know you like Green Day, but what you just shut up, you know, not having that on your car.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: I was like, oh okay, then so I just completely forgot about it.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: That was six months after, I think was I six months, no, it was six months before.
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: Six months before I'd even gone to the Noble Ring.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: So this would have been middle of 2019.
- 11:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: Then I saw this car at the end of 2019, and then I didn't see it again until the end of 2021.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: So this number plate came first, the car came second, and then a third time.
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: Um and anyway, when I got this car, it was only one you know thing I was gonna call it, and I didn't think that this number plate three years later would still be available, but it was, and I've paired the two together, and the rest is history, albeit the car has broken my heart several times with regards to maintenance.
- 12:20SPEAKER_02: Wow, but that you know that illustrates perfectly like um why people become so obsessed with the brand because of course it's something that you've you've aspired to own, you've wanted to own, and you've worked really hard to get it, and it's you know really special to you, and it just you know shows all that passion behind it.
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: Uh it's it's actually really interesting because it it sort of you know highlights coming back to your previous point about the sort of obsessive side of things, you know, why do people get obsessed with these cars?
- 12:49SPEAKER_00: I think it's the stories that they can tell with them, is the experiences that you'll get.
- 12:53SPEAKER_00: And coming back to your earlier It's an emotional purchase, yeah, it it can be.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: And I think that's I think that's sometimes where people can can can fall short, actually.
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: I know that I did.
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: I I became too emotional with the the car itself, the because it had been in my life, technically speaking, three years before I'd owned it, yeah, and I got obsessed with the colour.
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: And you know, that's not that is not the right way to to go about buying a car.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: It really isn't.
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: Um, but you and you can get carried away with it.
- 13:24SPEAKER_00: Um sometimes I you know, I regret it and think, you know, well, I could have done something else.
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: But then some of the stories that people can say about owning these cars and you know where they might have been and the people that they've met, it it you can and that comes back to your your first question, you know, and I come back to the sort of cost and the the ownership, you know.
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: There's a lot inherent with that.
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: You know, the it may have cost me a lot of money to to to own this car, but the the the great people that I've met through owning it, yeah, and the the places that I've visited in this car, it it's it's it it changes people.
- 14:04SPEAKER_02: And the brand has sort of brought about that community, hasn't it?
- 14:08SPEAKER_02: And I think that that's that's sort of you know obviously why you're here today as part of you know the the Between the Briefs podcast is not just because of you know being part of a great community and part of a great brand process, but you actually ended up working with that brand um through Pro Porsche Club.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: Well, let's just join those two together.
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: I mean, it it yeah.
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: So I mean I now work for for for Porsche Club Great Britain, um, and I have done for the last couple of years.
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: Um and that came about through the community that I was involved with.
- 14:41SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, I I I I own this car, I wanted to meet like-minded individuals that that had the same passion for these vehicles and wanted to drive these cars, and and it's quite difficult to sort of, you know, sometimes you might be there going, I don't know, I don't even know where to begin, I don't even know where to start.
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: How do I go and meet somebody that's going to have the same sort of enthusiasm as me?
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: Um, and so I joined Porsche Club GB Um and I got to know my local region really well.
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: And through that, I actually got to know some of the key directors that that actually ran the club because um, you know, Porsche Club Great Britain, it's based in Morton in Marsh, which Cotswolds, it's you know, it's local to me.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: Perfect, yeah.
- 15:23SPEAKER_00: Um, so I got to know the guys really, really well, and and when the opportunity came up to actually support and help the club, um, yeah, I couldn't I couldn't wait to to get more involved.
- 15:34SPEAKER_02: Um, that's great.
- 15:36SPEAKER_02: And what so when Porsche Club GB commissioned um new branding and guidelines, um what what do you think the purpose of that was and why?
- 15:47SPEAKER_02: Was it you know to do with the 65th anniversary?
- 15:51SPEAKER_02: No, no, no.
- 15:52SPEAKER_00: I mean the club the club's been it's our 65th anniversary this year.
- 15:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, so the club's been the club's been around a very, very long time.
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: So, you know, it it is the largest car club in Europe.
- 16:05SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's it's you know, we're officially recognized by Porsche.
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: It's second only in the world to America.
- 16:11SPEAKER_00: But you know, considering the size of our country and our population, it you know, we're never going to be the biggest.
- 16:17SPEAKER_00: Um, but we we we've obviously got to look after our our core membership.
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: You know, we've got a lot of history and we can't just erase that.
- 16:27SPEAKER_00: We can't, you know, we we can't tarnish it.
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: So we've got to be very, very careful.
- 16:31SPEAKER_00: But we're also very appreciative of where things are going.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: You know, as I said earlier in in in um before we started, you know, the the car culture has shifted.
- 16:42SPEAKER_00: You know, you know, these cars where they were more focused about driving, and people didn't really care about and they drove them in the rain and they drove them in the mud.
- 16:50SPEAKER_00: And I still know people that do, I know that I do, but you know, there wasn't this huge car culture that there is at the moment in the UK.
- 17:00SPEAKER_00: They weren't overly precious about these cars.
- 17:03SPEAKER_00: So the whole sort of point is that we've got this huge demographic of people, you know, vast, vast membership of people, and some of us, some of them have been with us a very, very long time.
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: So we have to be very, very careful about what we do, how we move forward, how do we appeal to a younger audience.
- 17:25SPEAKER_00: You know, we want to maintain our membership, but we also want to grow as a club because we want to keep ourselves relevant.
- 17:31SPEAKER_00: So I think the the sort of idea behind the the branding was, you know, we wanted to where I think we were failing in many ways was sort of on the digital platforms, which is where a lot of people, and and you know this better than anybody else, yeah.
- 17:46SPEAKER_00: You know, the way people are um you know digesting or viewing content these days, yeah, it it it's very different from how it used to be.
- 17:56SPEAKER_00: You know, it was mainly print back then, and we still have a fantastic magazine.
- 18:00SPEAKER_00: I've you know brought a couple of copies to show you today, and it is, it's it's the largest Porsche publication in the UK and people love it.
- 18:07SPEAKER_02: It goes with the set, so I don't know.
- 18:09unknown: Well, yeah.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: I got that red cover just for you, Steph.
- 18:12SPEAKER_02: Thanks.
- 18:12SPEAKER_00: Um you know, people love the magazine, and we don't really want to, you know, we we don't want to trample on that, but we do need to make sure that we are reaching a new audience and we're still getting those enthusi enthusiasts to want to come and join our club.
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: So you'd say it's important to incorporate the heritage with the new and so one of the things that we wanted to do with with the sort of the branding um is we wanted that to be much easier to represent digitally, yeah, but it also had to have a nod to our history.
- 18:46SPEAKER_02: Of course.
- 18:47SPEAKER_00: And I think that's where you know, where we sort of work with somebody like yourself.
- 18:51SPEAKER_00: We were saying, well, this is how we want it to kind of look.
- 18:55SPEAKER_00: It's got to be modern enough so that in print or on a screen or on a phone or a laptop on a you know, it's all got to be consistent.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: And that's something that I think we were lacking.
- 19:06SPEAKER_02: And also working, I suppose, with all of the different regions that you do, trying to bring that consistency through towards the Absolutely.
- 19:13SPEAKER_00: You know, we we we are very appreciative of the volunteers.
- 19:18SPEAKER_00: I mean, there are, you know, the the the board of directors are of a voluntary board.
- 19:24SPEAKER_00: Um we have you know a dozen or so paid members of staff and they look after the you know the the the club centrally.
- 19:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah uh and we've got over 24,000 members now.
- 19:36SPEAKER_00: So we can't we we can't we can't do this without volunteers.
- 19:40SPEAKER_00: Um so you know the regions, the registers, um, even volunteers that just want to give up their weekends to come and help out their local region.
- 19:48SPEAKER_00: Um and so giving them a sort of a consistent platform where we all are representative underneath one identity is really important to us.
- 19:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 19:57SPEAKER_02: What would you say is um like the most surprising thing that's happened as a result of redoing the branding?
- 20:04SPEAKER_00: Uh I think it's I think it's our there is two parts to this.
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: We we last year we took on a dedicated marketing manager, and she won't mind me mentioning her name, Alwyn.
- 20:15SPEAKER_00: Um and we wanted to, you know, she she's very, very good at what she does.
- 20:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:22SPEAKER_00: Um but having the branding right, obviously a nod to our heritage, looking where we want to go to the future, yeah.
- 20:32SPEAKER_00: We also set about creating brand guidelines, which you helped us achieve.
- 20:37SPEAKER_00: And why that's so important is again, we wanted that consistency, but it's it's allowed us to do different things.
- 20:44SPEAKER_00: So um, you know, I think in answer to your question, we uh have been able to communicate on our digital platforms far more effectively and far more consistently with everything that we do, whether it's events or you know, we've we've done a couple of prize draws the last couple of years, um, whether it's stuff that we do in the magazine, whether it's just the way our banners look.
- 21:08SPEAKER_00: I mean, we've just got new gazebos.
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: I'm sure your your watchers would like to know all about our gazebos, but again, you know, the the having the But it's having the recognition, isn't it?
- 21:17SPEAKER_02: And having recognizable, consistent recognition.
- 21:21SPEAKER_00: The colours have got to be the same.
- 21:22SPEAKER_00: Our stickers have got to be the same.
- 21:24SPEAKER_00: Anything to do with that, you know, a lot more goes into it, you know, whether it's print, whether it's so you know, Instagram, of course, YouTube.
- 21:32SPEAKER_00: Um we've just started on TikTok.
- 21:34SPEAKER_00: We'll see how that goes.
- 21:35SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 21:36SPEAKER_02: That sounds great.
- 21:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, that's that's that's why.
- 21:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, that's brilliant.
- 21:40SPEAKER_02: Okay, well, you see a great deal of photography, um, obviously, through your work and and your position now.
- 21:46SPEAKER_02: So what in your mind makes a great image or makes it worthy of more appreciation?
- 21:52SPEAKER_00: I think it's I think it's gotta be timeless.
- 21:56SPEAKER_00: Um I think it's very easy today to Create images that are flashy, on trend, um, but especially as I said, with with what we do at the club, you know, we have to have that historic representation because we're nothing without it.
- 22:16SPEAKER_00: So, you know, when it comes to an image, you know, our magazines, you know, we have a copy of every magazine from 1961 in our archive.
- 22:25SPEAKER_01: Oh wow.
- 22:26SPEAKER_00: So, you know, if we were to put an image into the magazine onto our website, you know, it's going to be there for a very, very long time.
- 22:34SPEAKER_00: So we want it to be timeless, we want it to be reflective.
- 22:38SPEAKER_00: So for me, you can make an image modern, you can get better equipment, you can do something funky with it.
- 22:45SPEAKER_00: And there's nothing wrong with that, but timeless.
- 22:48SPEAKER_00: I think if you can create a timeless image, yeah, you you're you're halfway there.
- 22:52SPEAKER_02: And obviously, I guess for you guys as well, you know, you're the club, you have to be in alignment with the Porsche branding as well, which is also very timeless, actually.
- 23:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 23:04SPEAKER_02: In terms of like their own visual identity and how they come across, you know, they haven't really changed massively how they advertise over history, haven't they?
- 23:13SPEAKER_00: It's a bit like the 9-11, it's evolution, not revolution.
- 23:17SPEAKER_00: So Porsche has changed their crest in the course of their lifetime.
- 23:23SPEAKER_00: Um, and it's just a tiny little tweak here and there.
- 23:26SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, because you want to it it's got to be something that people are familiar with.
- 23:32SPEAKER_00: You know, the 9-11 has had that silhouette for its entire life, and yes, it's bigger now and it's more capable, and you know, it's it might not be exactly the same, but they've kept it because it is timeless, it is classic.
- 23:46SPEAKER_02: You can see one a mile off, you know.
- 23:48unknown: You can.
- 23:49unknown: You can.
- 23:49SPEAKER_02: And and it's so sad, I think, with um cars these days, just as a segue, that um, you know, you go down the motorway and everything looks the same, it's so dull.
- 24:00SPEAKER_02: So when you see something that has really classic design or just something really beautiful, you can tell immediately if something was from like the 90s, for instance, because it has like a more boxy shape, and you know, I love the 90s guys.
- 24:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, well me too.
- 24:16SPEAKER_02: But um, but you know, things like Porsche, they just they they got it right and um and they haven't messed with it so much that it's ruined it.
- 24:25SPEAKER_02: And I think a lot of other car companies have.
- 24:27SPEAKER_02: I think there's a lot of cars that you see now, you know, in the premium market as well, that you can mistake for one another quite easily in you know, at night time, say when you just see tail lights, you know, you used to be able to identify a car by tail lights.
- 24:39SPEAKER_02: Well, I did anyway, but straight away.
- 24:41SPEAKER_02: But um now it's harder.
- 24:43SPEAKER_00: And I think that's maybe why I mean it's just boring.
- 24:46SPEAKER_00: No, it is, but I think maybe that that's another reason why the you know these cars have uh got more of a status now than I've ever known them to be.
- 24:54SPEAKER_00: Because you know, you talk about cars all looking the same.
- 24:57SPEAKER_00: You know, if you're a mid-20-year-old guy, girl, it doesn't make any difference.
- 25:02SPEAKER_00: You want to go out and have your first proper enthusiast car.
- 25:05SPEAKER_00: You know, it cars are expensive now.
- 25:07SPEAKER_00: So you know, if you wanted to get something that's a bit more unique, a bit more different, you know, that a Porsche was a great way into that performance car world, you know, where Ferraris have always been expensive, Lamborghinis have always been expensive, you know.
- 25:19SPEAKER_00: People could uh it was an attainable dream.
- 25:22SPEAKER_00: Um so yeah, I think you know people have always been drawn to that because they look different, yeah, and more so today than ever, and maybe that's why we're seeing you know the the car status increase and the prices increase.
- 25:38SPEAKER_02: Probably.
- 25:39SPEAKER_02: Um, that and diesel costs and everything else, but anyway.
- 25:43SPEAKER_02: Um so anyway, we've known each other a really long time.
- 25:47SPEAKER_02: We have a very long time.
- 25:49SPEAKER_02: Did you ever see me having a career in commercial photography?
- 25:52SPEAKER_02: And has anything changed in the decades since you've known me?
- 25:56SPEAKER_00: Well, when I met you, Steph, you were in commercial photography.
- 26:00SPEAKER_02: So I always nothing's really changed.
- 26:02SPEAKER_00: No, it no, it has changed.
- 26:04SPEAKER_00: Um, I always saw you doing this, and you know, I could see why you were drawn to it when I first met you.
- 26:10SPEAKER_00: I think and and I'll answer this in two parts.
- 26:15SPEAKER_00: So, yes, I could always see you doing this, and I am and I can see why you've still done this because I think there's a degree of artistic commitment and creativity that goes into this.
- 26:25SPEAKER_00: I don't think you can just be somebody that goes, I just want to pick up a camera and I'm gonna shoot stuff.
- 26:32SPEAKER_00: I just don't think it works like that.
- 26:33SPEAKER_00: I think you have to have that creative look about something, and you know, you have to look at something and go, I think I can do it this way, or I have an idea about how I'm gonna do it this way.
- 26:43SPEAKER_02: You know, that's or sometimes have no thought in your brain at all.
- 26:46unknown: All that.
- 26:48SPEAKER_00: So I think I think the creative artistic, you know, whether you're painting a Picasso or you're taking a photograph, you've got to have that kind of thing.
- 26:57SPEAKER_00: So, yes, I've always seen you doing it because you are that kind of person.
- 27:01SPEAKER_00: Where do I think it's changed?
- 27:02SPEAKER_00: I think the way that it's delivered these days has certainly changed, and I think you've had to adapt more than anybody else.
- 27:08SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, I I know that with some of the stuff that we've worked on, you know, it we've had to change the way we do things.
- 27:15SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 27:16SPEAKER_00: But it's been an exciting process.
- 27:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I know it's all part of the journey, isn't it?
- 27:20SPEAKER_02: And you know, growing into that, into that purely sort of um digital space, in incorporating that into the heritage of a brand, yeah.
- 27:29SPEAKER_02: Um with you know, the the sort of print aspect as well, or bringing all of it together and making sure that it still all looks like a complete sort of you know visual identity.
- 27:39SPEAKER_02: It's all part of the journey.
- 27:41SPEAKER_00: No, it is, but touching back to what you know we would we were discussing earlier, you know, I don't think we really sort of, you know, I didn't think that you would be, you know, involved in something like brand guidelines.
- 27:52SPEAKER_00: You know, I think that was a really important part for the journey for us, because as well as just creating the new colours and you know, uh a new shield and having something that's historic and timeless, as we were discussing earlier, you know, it was you that sort of suggested to us that you know said, well, this is you know how you should take things because it's going to make your life easier when you either move into this digital sector, whether you're doing it this way or somebody that we've never worked with before in the past, we can send them these guidelines and and you know they can look through it and know what we're about.
- 28:23SPEAKER_00: And I think you know, we've a lot of appreciation for what you did and certainly thanks from that end because it's made our lives easier.
- 28:31SPEAKER_00: You know, we would never have thought to have done that.
- 28:33SPEAKER_00: And I think that inherently, you know, certainly from just our personal relationship, you know, your contact list that you have for knowing people that would produce brand guidelines, or whether you know, this is the particular design that we want to work on, and this it has to be representative on the different formats.
- 28:52SPEAKER_00: You know, it needs to be this.
- 28:53SPEAKER_00: Uh you're gonna tell me what they are, but PNG for digital and PDF for this, or PM, you know, there's certain different things that are different for print than they are for for media.
- 29:04SPEAKER_00: So, you know, having these brand guidelines that we can, you know, send to somebody is fantastic.
- 29:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, it's and we know you know we've got you to thank for that.
- 29:14SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's very kind of you.
- 29:16SPEAKER_02: And yeah, it was a it was a pleasure to work on it, by the way.
- 29:18SPEAKER_02: It was really good fun, really enjoyed the process, and getting to know everybody in the team as well was great.
- 29:25SPEAKER_02: Um that's yeah, I found that out on the experience day.
- 29:29SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 29:30SPEAKER_02: That was really good fun as well.
- 29:32SPEAKER_02: Um, okay, well, so obviously you've been around working with me, you know, for years, you've been around my work for years, you've commissioned me as we've just discussed, you've seen the behind-the-scenes chaos on various shoots that we've been involved with together.
- 29:48SPEAKER_02: Um, and you you'll watch me build this podcast now.
- 29:51SPEAKER_02: So, what do you think it is that um that I understand about visual branding that perhaps businesses sometimes don't get?
- 30:03SPEAKER_00: Um, I think it's I think it it touches back to that sort of creative artistic side.
- 30:10SPEAKER_00: You know, you you have that, but you also come at it from a you know a very logistical point of view, a very uh methodical.
- 30:18SPEAKER_00: You know, I think some some companies might not necessarily know what they want.
- 30:23SPEAKER_00: Like the brand guidelines is a great example.
- 30:25SPEAKER_00: You know, they might not necessarily know what they're trying to achieve until you give it to them, but also it's the option Until I tell them what they need.
- 30:34SPEAKER_02: But it's the option is just what you need.
- 30:36SPEAKER_02: It's the option that's not a good thing.
- 30:37SPEAKER_02: Or someone like me, you know, it doesn't have to be me, but someone someone to work with a brand to help them understand how they can move things forward, basically.
- 30:45SPEAKER_00: I think the option, you know, presenting people with options, and I know you don't want, you know, to have your your clients blown away with with you know too much choice, but I think it's the option to giving them an avenue that would be right for them that maybe even something that they they haven't necessarily thought about.
- 31:03SPEAKER_00: And you know, coming back to sort of behind the scenes, you know, even when we've been on shoots and it may, wait, it's been a glove or a watch or whatever it might be, you know, people will see the shot of like, you know, it's very, very natural like this.
- 31:16SPEAKER_00: But you know, you might have had to take 200 shots of the same image and people slightly rotating their hand just because the light's shining on a different way, or you know, there might be a different crease that you need to sort of adjust.
- 31:28SPEAKER_00: And I don't think there's a big appreciation for for those those kind of technicalities on what you do, so you know, you can sort of educate people more so no, there isn't.
- 31:40SPEAKER_00: So I think that that that's something that I think you can bring.
- 31:44SPEAKER_00: You know, you you can show them that, and even if even if it is just a a one-time shoot for a product, or it might build up into a relationship that spans years, and you know, you you might have a uh a client that will end up working with you that will say, well, you know, this is the next um the progression of our product, of our brand.
- 32:05SPEAKER_00: And you know, you've worked with them like that.
- 32:07SPEAKER_00: And I don't necessarily think a media company or you know, somebody you or even some of the AI stuff now will have that ability to be able to work and grow.
- 32:18SPEAKER_00: It's a very similar to what we've done with the club.
- 32:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 32:21SPEAKER_02: I think there'll be a break from you know, sort of traditional agencies, and I think there will be lots of um other job opportunities coming up for people to work with, you know, with or inside brands that need that additional support just to help sho help make sure that whatever sort of the overarching visuals are that they're putting out, um they they are reflective of, you know, uh if they have a heritage, the heritage of the brand or an ethos or a direction that they want to take it, um, because however you create it, whether it's the traditional methods, you know, with photography, videography and all of that, or whether it's with AI or a mix of both, um, it it needs to obviously still maintain an element of um consistency so that you know the customer builds that trust with you.
- 33:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 33:08SPEAKER_02: And I think that that is something that you know, obviously you guys have really appreciated and understood and taken forward into all of your ongoing.
- 33:16SPEAKER_00: I mean, you know, just just just from from my own personal experience, you know, there'll always be things that will try and trip you up on the way, you know, and I think some of your clients, um, you know, or or people that maybe are looking at at working with someone like yourself, there will be things that trip you up.
- 33:33SPEAKER_00: And it's always great to be able to have that person with that knowledge and experience behind that.
- 33:39SPEAKER_00: You can just phone.
- 33:40SPEAKER_00: You're worried about something.
- 33:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you can pick up the phone, you can have a conversation about it.
- 33:44SPEAKER_00: You know, what are you worried about?
- 33:45SPEAKER_00: Well, I'm worried that I don't know what the ratio might be wrong, or I'm worried that we're not hitting the right audience, or whatever it might be, or no, I want to shoot it in black and white.
- 33:53SPEAKER_00: You know, all of this stuff, you're gonna you're gonna wake up in the night, you're gonna have worries.
- 33:57SPEAKER_00: Are we doing the right thing?
- 33:58SPEAKER_00: Is it too late to change my mind?
- 34:00SPEAKER_00: And I think there's a big element of that that you know, you take that pressure away.
- 34:04SPEAKER_00: I know that pressure kind of goes on you, but at least you can talk through it and go, well, actually, we're not gonna do it that way because of this.
- 34:11SPEAKER_00: And that's a really, really nice thing to have.
- 34:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think that's a that's a fundamental word that we haven't said yet is having a strategy.
- 34:19SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 34:20SPEAKER_02: A strategy is really, really, really important in all of it.
- 34:24SPEAKER_00: Have we ever had a strategy, Steph?
- 34:26SPEAKER_02: Of course, of course.
- 34:27SPEAKER_02: There's always strategy.
- 34:29SPEAKER_02: There's method in the madness.
- 34:30SPEAKER_00: There is.
- 34:31SPEAKER_02: So yeah.
- 34:32SPEAKER_02: Okay, well, I've got a few um random questions for you here.
- 34:36SPEAKER_02: Are you ready for these?
- 34:37SPEAKER_00: Go on then, I'm ready.
- 34:39SPEAKER_02: Okay, so what is the most money you've spent on something purely because it looked good?
- 34:45SPEAKER_00: Alloy wheels.
- 34:47SPEAKER_02: Oh, really?
- 34:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 34:48SPEAKER_02: Oh.
- 34:49SPEAKER_00: I mean, let's be honest, wheels are wheels.
- 34:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 34:51SPEAKER_00: But no.
- 34:53SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, I do like a good set of alloys to be fair.
- 34:56SPEAKER_00: Can be quite expensive.
- 34:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 34:58SPEAKER_02: Was that for the Porsche?
- 34:59SPEAKER_02: It was.
- 34:59SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
- 35:00SPEAKER_02: But I do like them.
- 35:01SPEAKER_02: Do you want to tell us how much they were?
- 35:02unknown: No.
- 35:05SPEAKER_02: A few months ago.
- 35:06SPEAKER_02: Genuine roof wheels.
- 35:07SPEAKER_02: Right, okay.
- 35:07SPEAKER_00: Those who know will know.
- 35:09SPEAKER_02: Oh, okay.
- 35:10SPEAKER_02: There you go.
- 35:10SPEAKER_02: Genuine what?
- 35:11SPEAKER_00: Roof.
- 35:12SPEAKER_02: Roof wheels.
- 35:13SPEAKER_00: R-U-F.
- 35:14SPEAKER_02: Ah, okay.
- 35:15SPEAKER_00: It's a German manufacturer and they uh they build cars.
- 35:18SPEAKER_00: Special.
- 35:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 35:19SPEAKER_02: Okay, so but it suits the colour.
- 35:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, fair enough.
- 35:22SPEAKER_02: No, it does look slick.
- 35:23SPEAKER_02: Very good.
- 35:24SPEAKER_02: Okay, um, so with the money questions continuing, what's the one thing you'll always spend more money on because you think the quality matters?
- 35:35SPEAKER_02: Mattress.
- 35:36SPEAKER_00: And I'll tell you for why.
- 35:37SPEAKER_00: I'll tell you, I know it's another answer.
- 35:39SPEAKER_00: It's an odd answer.
- 35:39SPEAKER_00: I know it's between the briefs.
- 35:41SPEAKER_00: I know, between the briefs, yeah.
- 35:43SPEAKER_00: Um years ago, I remember going over to a friend of mine's house and uh I don't even know how we got onto the sub subject.
- 35:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 35:51SPEAKER_00: And uh he was like, So you know, how much do you spend on the mattress?
- 35:54SPEAKER_00: I don't know, a couple hundred quid.
- 35:56SPEAKER_00: Bed, I don't care.
- 35:57SPEAKER_00: You know, I go to sleep in it.
- 35:58SPEAKER_00: And he's like, Are you mad?
- 36:00SPEAKER_00: And I was like, Why?
- 36:01SPEAKER_00: He's like, You did realise you spend like a third of your life in bed.
- 36:05SPEAKER_00: And he said, Would you not want to make sure you have the best night's sleep possible and be as comfortable as possible?
- 36:11SPEAKER_00: And I was like, I'd never thought of it that way.
- 36:14SPEAKER_00: So um, yeah, spend your money on an expensive mattress, get a good night's sleep.
- 36:20SPEAKER_02: Good advice, that I'll take that.
- 36:22SPEAKER_02: Take it to the bank.
- 36:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, okay, fine.
- 36:25SPEAKER_02: And what's more important, the way something performs or the way it makes you feel?
- 36:32SPEAKER_00: Oh, do you know what?
- 36:34SPEAKER_00: If it doesn't perform right, it makes me feel terrible.
- 36:37SPEAKER_00: So that's kind of a double answer, I know, but performance.
- 36:43SPEAKER_00: If it performs as it should, especially when it comes to a car, um, I want my cars to be absolutely on point.
- 36:49SPEAKER_00: And if they are, there's no better feeling.
- 36:51SPEAKER_02: But as we've already established at the beginning of this podcast, it can be traumatic.
- 36:55SPEAKER_02: Feelings are what drew you because of that lifelong urge to, you know, it is so it depends.
- 37:02SPEAKER_00: If you're asking me performance over feeling with cars, not that I'm trying to argue because I believe that, you know, it's probably both, to be honest.
- 37:11SPEAKER_00: But if you ask me about, you know, does my phone need to make me feel good or does it just need to work?
- 37:16SPEAKER_00: No.
- 37:17SPEAKER_00: So I suppose it depends on what we're talking about.
- 37:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, of course.
- 37:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 37:22SPEAKER_02: Okay, fine.
- 37:23SPEAKER_02: Well, I have a few quickfire questions for you.
- 37:26SPEAKER_02: Are you ready?
- 37:27SPEAKER_02: I've heard about this.
- 37:28SPEAKER_02: I've heard about this.
- 37:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm ready.
- 37:29SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 37:30SPEAKER_00: Go.
- 37:31SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 37:32SPEAKER_02: Are you ready?
- 37:33SPEAKER_02: Ollie, these are your quickfire questions.
- 37:35SPEAKER_02: American Idiot or Dookie?
- 37:37SPEAKER_00: 21st century breakdown.
- 37:39SPEAKER_02: Oh, okay.
- 37:40SPEAKER_02: Just changing the change, change the script.
- 37:43SPEAKER_02: That's fine.
- 37:43SPEAKER_02: Um, 9-11 or something completely different?
- 37:46SPEAKER_02: 9-11.
- 37:47SPEAKER_02: Okay, manual or automatic.
- 37:50SPEAKER_00: I'd say PDK because that is actually a manual automatic transmission, but manual.
- 37:55SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 37:56SPEAKER_02: Petrol or electric?
- 37:58SPEAKER_02: Petrol.
- 37:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 37:59SPEAKER_02: Classic or modern?
- 38:01SPEAKER_00: Modern classic.
- 38:03SPEAKER_02: Oh, come on.
- 38:04SPEAKER_02: What cop-out answer is that?
- 38:06SPEAKER_00: Modern.
- 38:07SPEAKER_02: Modern?
- 38:07SPEAKER_02: Well, earlier you were saying an image has to be classic.
- 38:10SPEAKER_00: So it does, it does, but from somebody, um, and this is part of the story that we miss, but from somebody that uh uh was involved in a car accident, wasn't my fault, but uh somebody wrote me off going through a red light.
- 38:23SPEAKER_00: Oh my god.
- 38:24SPEAKER_00: Um I can say this now, I'd much rather be in a modern car than in a classic car.
- 38:29SPEAKER_02: Fair enough, fair enough.
- 38:31SPEAKER_02: Okay, so when we're talking about cars, modern.
- 38:33SPEAKER_02: Got it.
- 38:34SPEAKER_00: But not too modern.
- 38:35SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 38:36SPEAKER_02: Still with uh yeah.
- 38:38SPEAKER_02: Airbags, ABS, yeah.
- 38:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, fine.

- 38:44SPEAKER_02: No, no.
- 38:45SPEAKER_02: Oh, I just thought I'd press the buttons there.
- 38:48SPEAKER_02: Okay, early start or late finish?
- 38:50SPEAKER_00: Early start.
- 38:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, big idea or meticulous planning.
- 38:53SPEAKER_00: Meticulous planning.
- 38:55SPEAKER_02: Coke or diet coke?
- 38:57SPEAKER_00: Diet Coke.
- 38:58SPEAKER_02: Apple or Android?
- 39:00SPEAKER_00: Apple.

- 39:04SPEAKER_00: Puma.
- 39:04SPEAKER_02: Ooh, okay.
- 39:05SPEAKER_02: Fair enough.
- 39:06SPEAKER_02: Road trip or racetrack?

- 39:20SPEAKER_00: So windows down.
- 39:21SPEAKER_02: Fair enough.

- 39:47SPEAKER_00: Um, but I think if we're talking well, well, we'll stick with the car theme.
- 39:53SPEAKER_00: Number plates.
- 39:54SPEAKER_00: If I see a car where a dealership hasn't put the number plate on straight, I just want to get the screwdriver out and just go and knock on the guy's window and say, look, can I just fix your number plate for you?
- 40:08SPEAKER_00: It really irritates me.
- 40:11SPEAKER_00: You know, you know, it's the last bit of the puzzle.
- 40:14SPEAKER_00: It's like, let's build a car, you know, put the interior in it, let's paint it, put it all together, and then it rolls off the production line.
- 40:20SPEAKER_00: Somebody just goes, that'll do.
- 40:24SPEAKER_00: Wonky number plates.
- 40:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, okay.
- 40:26SPEAKER_02: I like that one.
- 40:28SPEAKER_02: What is one brand you think is massively overrated?
- 40:32SPEAKER_00: Oh.
- 40:36SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna stick with the car theme here, and I'd hope I don't get hate.
- 40:40SPEAKER_00: Uh Range Rover.
- 40:42SPEAKER_00: You drive a Range Rover, don't you?
- 40:44SPEAKER_00: I drive one of those.
- 40:46SPEAKER_00: I just don't get it.
- 40:47SPEAKER_00: I don't get it.
- 40:48SPEAKER_00: I just don't get it.
- 40:49SPEAKER_00: I I I think I think I love the brand, as in, you know, British brand, a lot of history.
- 40:56SPEAKER_00: I can see why people buy them, but where we live in the Cotsworlds, you see so many of them.
- 41:01SPEAKER_00: I just I I can't understand why somebody would want to have the same as somebody else.
- 41:05SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna mine is practical reasons.
- 41:07SPEAKER_02: Comfort is like driving an armchair, it's really, you know, it's got really good speed, it's got Eurosystems.
- 41:15SPEAKER_02: Yes, okay, fine.
- 41:16SPEAKER_02: I may look into it.
- 41:17SPEAKER_02: Next car, next car.
- 41:18SPEAKER_02: Okay, I'm building up to it.
- 41:21SPEAKER_02: Okay, this one's gonna be a tough one for you, but it's the last one.

- 41:34SPEAKER_00: Sorry, Porsche Club.
- 41:37SPEAKER_00: I'll just I'll carry on just enjoying the cars, but I'll just have to watch other people drive them.
- 41:42SPEAKER_02: Oh, Ollie, you've been an amazing guest.
