1:50
SPEAKER_02: Hey Julianne.
1:51
SPEAKER_05: Ready to rock.
1:52
SPEAKER_05: Ooh, bubble horns, Parker.
1:55
SPEAKER_05: I know you got it in you.
1:56
SPEAKER_05: I know you're cool.
1:58
SPEAKER_02: That was my guitar sound.
2:02
SPEAKER_02: So speaking of rock and roll and metal, nips, what a coincidence that that just came up.
2:08
SPEAKER_02: Because uh we are talking about the new VOD release, We Summon the Darkness.
2:13
SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
2:14
SPEAKER_02: Uh now, Julianne, have you ever summoned the darkness before?
2:17
SPEAKER_05: You know, I've tried.
2:19
SPEAKER_05: I didn't quite quite get anything out of it.
2:22
SPEAKER_05: Um, no, I I've I never if you mean like a like a Ouija board or something like that, something cool like that, no.
2:29
SPEAKER_05: I've never had it.
2:30
SPEAKER_05: I was just throwing it out there.
2:31
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean I I'd be interested if you want to try.
2:34
SPEAKER_05: That could be a bonus Patreon episode.
2:36
SPEAKER_05: We could try it.
2:37
SPEAKER_02: Ooh, my cat is pooping.
2:39
SPEAKER_05: Oh.
2:40
SPEAKER_02: Sometimes I like to stare at him because he doesn't look back and then he'll see me looking at him and he'll jump.
2:46
SPEAKER_05: Well, you're scaring him.
2:47
SPEAKER_05: Leave him face.
2:49
SPEAKER_02: All right, back to business.
2:51
SPEAKER_02: No time for jokes here.
2:54
SPEAKER_02: So we summon the darkness wide release in 2020.
2:57
SPEAKER_02: Do you know, is there any plan for this movie besides straight to VOD?
3:01
SPEAKER_05: I don't believe so.
3:02
SPEAKER_05: I don't think it would have been very successful.
3:04
SPEAKER_05: It's kind of if it feels like a very contained, small indie release.
3:08
SPEAKER_05: I don't I doubt it.
3:09
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it feels like uh uh an at-home movie to me as well.
3:14
SPEAKER_02: Um so it was directed by Mark Myers, and I have to say, love the name.
3:19
SPEAKER_02: Um uh he also wrote and directed My Friend Dahmer from 2017, which I wanted to see.
3:26
SPEAKER_02: Have you seen that?
3:27
SPEAKER_05: I have seen it.
3:28
SPEAKER_05: I like that movie.
3:28
SPEAKER_05: Um, it's you know who's in that?
3:30
SPEAKER_05: Uh Alex Wolf from Hereditary.
3:33
SPEAKER_02: Oh, Peter.
3:34
SPEAKER_05: He's really good in it.
3:35
SPEAKER_05: So yeah, I'd recommend checking it out.
3:37
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, horror adjacent.
3:38
SPEAKER_02: I try and do like horror um credits on these to the best of my ability.
3:43
SPEAKER_02: This is the best I could get.
3:45
SPEAKER_02: And sometimes if there are no horror credits for people, it's like, oh, uh, you know, this person was uh illegally blonde.
3:50
SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
3:51
SPEAKER_02: Right, right.
3:52
SPEAKER_02: It was written by Alan Tresza, who wrote um a short film that was then turned into a feature film called Burying the X.
4:02
SPEAKER_02: And that feature film was released in 2014.
4:06
SPEAKER_02: I am unfamiliar.
4:07
SPEAKER_05: Me too.
4:08
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I don't I don't know that one.
4:10
SPEAKER_05: Miss Alexandra Dedario plays Alexis.
4:13
SPEAKER_05: She was in the two Percy Jackson films, Texas Chainsaw 3D from 2013, and many TV shows like American Horror Story Hotel, which I can't picture who she oh wait, wait, wait.
4:26
SPEAKER_05: Remind me who she is in Hotel.
4:29
SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, I didn't write that down.
4:32
SPEAKER_05: Sorry, I'm putting on the spot.
4:34
SPEAKER_02: No, I just write down what they're in, and I'm like, I don't care.
4:37
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I I can't picture, but yeah, she's she's I did specifically look up that she was in hotel though, because it just said American Horror Story, and I was like, well, which one?
4:45
SPEAKER_05: I can't picture which one where she was, but anyway.
4:47
SPEAKER_02: It probably wasn't a big role.
4:49
SPEAKER_05: It wasn't a big role.
4:50
SPEAKER_05: Um, Maddie Haston, Haston, not sure, plays Val.
4:54
SPEAKER_05: She's like the cute blonde.
4:55
SPEAKER_05: She's uh she was in God Bless America from 2011.
4:58
SPEAKER_02: Have you seen that?
4:59
SPEAKER_05: I haven't, no.
5:01
SPEAKER_02: So that was one.
5:02
SPEAKER_02: I don't know how there are like a collection of like under the under the radar movies from when I was in high school, and I'm always like, how did I manage to watch that?
5:12
SPEAKER_02: But this movie uh came out when I was in high school, I believe.
5:15
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, 2011.
5:17
SPEAKER_02: And I don't remember a thing about it, except I believe they shoot a baby in it.
5:21
SPEAKER_05: Oh, so that's like a Serbian film kind of shit, right there.
5:24
SPEAKER_02: Well, it's kind of it's a very stylized moment.
5:26
SPEAKER_02: I think he's holding a baby and then he tosses it up in the air, and then someone shoots it, and you see like blood rain down.
5:31
SPEAKER_05: Whoa, okay.
5:32
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I don't really remember.
5:33
SPEAKER_02: I could have totally dreamed that, but I believe that happens in that movie.
5:38
SPEAKER_05: Listeners, uh recommendation from Parker right here.
5:42
SPEAKER_02: I remember liking it.
5:44
SPEAKER_05: Okay, okay.
5:45
SPEAKER_05: She was also in the Mr.
5:46
SPEAKER_05: Mercedes TV show and malignant.
5:49
SPEAKER_05: Is that is that what I don't know what that is.
5:51
SPEAKER_05: Uh the upcoming James Wan movie.
5:52
SPEAKER_05: Is that what it's called?
5:53
SPEAKER_05: Okay.
5:54
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Malignant.
5:55
SPEAKER_02: So that's the one that James Wan's been posting all these like uh what do you call those uh clack things?
6:00
SPEAKER_05: Okay.
6:01
SPEAKER_02: Uh well he's been posting the uh like photos of those.
6:04
SPEAKER_02: So that's his new movie that everybody's been ooh, mystery, you know.
6:08
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, is that supposed to come out this year or or no?
6:10
SPEAKER_02: I believe the end of the year, but who knows?
6:12
SPEAKER_05: Who knows at this point, yeah.
6:13
SPEAKER_05: Um, I never know how to pronounce her name.
6:15
SPEAKER_05: Amy Forseth.
6:16
SPEAKER_05: Is it Forsyth?
6:17
SPEAKER_05: I believe I've seen her in a few things.
6:20
SPEAKER_05: Uh Channel Zero, uh, which is now on Shutter, you can stream, and Hellfest from 2018, which I really dug.
6:25
SPEAKER_05: Did you see that, Marker?
6:26
SPEAKER_05: I didn't because I heard it was bad, but if you liked it, then um no, I I it was like kind of divisive, but it's a fun little slasher.
6:33
SPEAKER_05: I mean, if you're into like I mean, I don't know about you, but I love going to like Halloween horror night kind of stuff.
6:38
SPEAKER_05: And imagine if someone was walking around with a knife, man.
6:41
SPEAKER_05: That'd be that shit scary.
6:42
SPEAKER_05: So I I dug it.
6:43
SPEAKER_02: I actually hate haunted houses.
6:45
SPEAKER_02: And last year, uh you know because it was our first Halloween having started the podcast, right?
6:50
SPEAKER_02: I was like, I have to go to haunted houses.
6:53
SPEAKER_02: And then in New York City, they were also expensive, so I didn't go.
6:56
SPEAKER_02: But next year, I would love to go to some haunted things.
6:59
SPEAKER_02: Or I guess this year.
7:00
SPEAKER_05: Hopefully, well, if if role goes back to normal, but uh I'm gonna believe that by October it will.
7:07
SPEAKER_05: Let's hope, yeah.
7:07
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, uh, and then Logan Miller, um, he was in Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse from 2015 and Escape Room from 2019, which I still haven't seen yet.
7:17
SPEAKER_02: It's it's a it's a fun time.
7:20
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, it's fine.
7:21
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and then Keyn Johnson plays Mark, he was in a lead of battle angel from 2019, and Euphoria.
7:27
SPEAKER_05: That's cool.
7:28
SPEAKER_05: And then Mr.
7:30
SPEAKER_05: Johnny Knoxville, which I was really pleasantly surprised when I when I watched this.
7:33
SPEAKER_05: Um he plays Pastor John Henry Butler, and he's obviously known for being the face of the Jackass TV show and movies, and he kind of looks kind of old.
7:41
SPEAKER_05: I almost didn't recognize him at first.
7:42
SPEAKER_05: He aged a lot.
7:44
SPEAKER_02: Um I've actually never seen anything jackass, so I didn't know who it was.
7:48
SPEAKER_05: You oh you didn't know who that was at all?
7:49
SPEAKER_05: Oh, it's old.
7:50
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, he's he's a character.
7:53
SPEAKER_05: That's just Google.
7:54
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, when I uh all the posters were like Johnny Knoxville, and so I was like, oh, okay.
7:59
SPEAKER_02: Well, who's that?
8:00
SPEAKER_02: And then I looked it up.
8:01
SPEAKER_02: Uh actually, you know, on IMDb it just shows you everything, and so I looked him up on Wikipedia and it was like Jackass.
8:07
SPEAKER_06: And I was like, yeah.
8:08
SPEAKER_02: Well, if you happen to be asking yourself right now, what is We Summon the Darkness about?
8:14
SPEAKER_02: And I'm just gonna warn you right now, this is my first time reading this summary because I copy and pasted it before I read or I watched the movie and I wanted to be surprised.
8:22
SPEAKER_02: So this is from Rotten Tomatoes.
8:24
SPEAKER_02: They say the killing spree of murderous Satanists has already led to 18 deaths throughout America's heartland.
8:32
SPEAKER_02: Three best friends, blah blah blah, embark on a road trip to a heavy metal music festival.
8:38
SPEAKER_02: Naive, they bond with three seemingly fun-loving dudes, and soon the group heads off to Alexis' country home, a very secluded place for an after party.
8:48
SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, this is like a full novel.
8:50
SPEAKER_02: Uh, you could just watch the movie and the time it takes me to read this.
8:54
SPEAKER_02: What should be a night of fun and youthful debauchery may instead take a dark, deadly turn.
9:00
SPEAKER_02: May, who knows?
9:02
SPEAKER_02: Uh, with killers on the loose, can anyone be trusted?
9:06
SPEAKER_02: You know, if I had read that beforehand, um right now of well, I mean, I don't want to spoil the podcast, but I'm like, I'm like so-so on this movie.
9:16
SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
9:16
SPEAKER_02: Um, but if I had read this summary, I think I would have hated it.
9:19
SPEAKER_05: I think I the only thing that would have really drew me in was the part that about the heavy metal concert.
9:24
SPEAKER_05: Other than that, I'd be like, nah.
9:27
SPEAKER_05: It's a little too wordy and kind of too like who could be trusted.
9:29
SPEAKER_02: It's like oh see, that's the part I like.
9:31
SPEAKER_02: Like uh, you know, with the killers on the loose, you know, what can I would have been like, oh, home invasion, love it.
9:39
SPEAKER_05: No, yeah, Satan is stuff I'm interested in.
9:41
SPEAKER_05: But yeah, but it's not really that.
9:43
SPEAKER_02: If Satan's in it, sign me up.
9:45
SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
9:46
SPEAKER_02: Uh which you know, he's not really in this one.
9:48
SPEAKER_04: No.
9:49
SPEAKER_02: Uh so the Rotten Tomatoes information as of April 12th, 2020.
9:54
SPEAKER_02: So it could have changed by now.
9:55
SPEAKER_02: You'll have to keep your eye on it.
9:57
SPEAKER_02: Critic score.
9:58
SPEAKER_02: This is another interesting one if you look at the divide.
10:01
SPEAKER_02: Critic score 67%, audience score 29%.
10:06
SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
10:07
SPEAKER_02: So, um, and you know, those are calculated this in that way, but a pretty large divide on who's positive and who's negative.
10:13
SPEAKER_02: And their consensus says we summon the darkness makes the most of its rather pedestrian plot with a palpable affection for genre formula, an appealing cast, and a sharp sense of humor.
10:26
SPEAKER_05: I think that gives it a little too much credit, but I was about to say that is loving.
10:31
SPEAKER_05: That's loving it, but it's only 67%, so that means that a good 33% did not like it.
10:36
SPEAKER_05: So yeah, it's this is this is a weird one.
10:39
SPEAKER_05: This is a weird one.
10:40
SPEAKER_02: I'm even gonna look up what the average rating from those critics was because now I'm curious.
10:46
SPEAKER_05: I would imagine it's probably like in like the six, six point five error out of ten, and then it's kind of like positive, but it's not really like gleaning positive, you know what I mean?
10:55
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
10:56
SPEAKER_02: Um you are so right.
10:58
SPEAKER_02: The average rating was a five point ninety-one.
11:01
SPEAKER_05: Wow, that's like right at the cusp.
11:03
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, does that even think well I yeah, I guess it's close enough to count as positive.
11:06
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, if it's above a five, then it's positive.
11:09
SPEAKER_02: Uh and I'm always so interested in the way that Rotten Tomatoes calculates this stuff because I think people read it incorrectly a lot.
11:17
SPEAKER_05: And um people think that means that it's a grade score out of a hundred, like, oh, it's at like a sixty-seven percent.
11:23
SPEAKER_05: So it's basically like a D, it's like a like a D plus or C minus.
11:26
SPEAKER_05: I'm like, no, it's it's kind of just like that's the amount of people who were just kind of fine with it.
11:31
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and that's kind of the way I feel like the website puts it off as like, you know, the most people have given it 67%.
11:39
SPEAKER_02: Like to me, it almost looks like the tomato meter is like an average of the scores people have given it, but it's just saying 67% gave it a above five.
11:48
SPEAKER_05: Right.
11:48
SPEAKER_02: Anyway, I don't know how they calculate the audience score, actually.
11:51
SPEAKER_05: So no, me neither.
11:52
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but uh um maybe I should start looking at different places for my rating, but who cares?
11:57
SPEAKER_05: Whoever.
11:58
SPEAKER_02: So after you saw, when did you see We Summon the Darkness?
12:01
SPEAKER_02: Because you said it had spin a minute.
12:03
SPEAKER_05: I I saw it, so I reviewed it for one of the sites I write for.
12:06
SPEAKER_05: I I saw it about a month ago, I believe.
12:09
SPEAKER_05: Um I I had a screener of it, and uh yeah, I uh I was all about it.
12:15
SPEAKER_05: I had my um a couple of my friends had seen it through other fruit festivals and screeners and stuff, and um I was pumped for it because I saw the premise and I was like, that sounds fun, you know, and uh it it's kind of misleading as I mean, but like I get why it's misleading, but it's not exactly what it presents itself as, so I was kind of like meh yeah, I kind of feel the same way.
12:36
SPEAKER_02: Now riddle me this.
12:38
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I have heard rumor that you are somewhat of an expert in metal horror.
12:46
SPEAKER_02: Confirm or deny.
12:48
SPEAKER_05: Well, if you say so.
12:50
SPEAKER_02: No.
12:51
SPEAKER_02: I confirm.
12:53
SPEAKER_02: In fact, I believe there is even an article, you know, making its way around the world on bloody disgusting.com that you gave kind of a history of metal horror.
13:05
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I I I did.
13:06
SPEAKER_05: Thanks, Parker, for the little little plug.
13:08
SPEAKER_05: No, I um yeah, I I published something for Bloody Disgusting last week about uh metal exploitation, as it's called.
13:15
SPEAKER_05: It's uh basically it's just the either either satirizing or portraying heavy metal in cinema.
13:23
SPEAKER_05: That's all it is.
13:24
SPEAKER_05: Uh as we as you people who are fans of the genre know, um heavy metal and horror go hand in hand.
13:31
SPEAKER_05: That's kind of the reason why we we even got the band Black Sabbath, which is Ozzy Osborne's band, but from back in the 60s, they they wanted to be a musical equivalent of horror, of horror films.
13:42
SPEAKER_05: So that's that's what they emulated themselves as.
13:45
SPEAKER_05: And uh from there, heavy metal horror was kind of born.
13:48
SPEAKER_05: That that marriage made it in hell was was uh calculated.
13:52
SPEAKER_05: But um, yeah, it's uh we had a few like in the 70s, they were kind of metal-ish, like Phantom of the Paradise and stuff.
13:59
SPEAKER_05: Um, but by the 80s, that's when heavy metal kind of like boomed, and we got a lot of hair metal bands, we got M it was an MTV era, and we had we got tons of heavy metal horror movies, including Trick or Treat.
14:12
SPEAKER_02: Um which you convinced me to watch, and I actually loved that movie.
14:16
SPEAKER_05: It's a great movie, yeah.
14:17
SPEAKER_05: It's a very, it's a very loving kind of I mean, it's basically a love letter to heavy metal and horror together.
14:24
SPEAKER_05: It's just it's a great little movie.
14:26
SPEAKER_05: Um, and this movie, Some of the Darkness, is very much in that kind of 1980s backdrop of like the Ronald Reagan era and satanic panic, and oh my god, don't let the kids listen to that stuff because it's because they'll play it backwards and it'll tell them to go kill someone, and it's that stuff, of course, is ridiculous.
14:42
SPEAKER_05: We know that now, but back then it was like this big fear-mongering kind of thing.
14:46
SPEAKER_05: And uh yeah, that this this this movie kind of admittedly it plays upon that setting of like the 1980s um satanic panic, like, oh my god, Satanists are out there killing people.
14:57
SPEAKER_05: We find out that actually it's not that, which I do we'll give it credit for.
15:00
SPEAKER_05: It kind of subverts that trope, but how effectively, I don't know, but but yeah, that's my little my little spiel on heavy metal horror.
15:08
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and there's also a ton more information that you can learn from Julianne's article because it was incredible.
15:16
SPEAKER_02: So everyone go read that if you want the full skinny.
15:19
SPEAKER_02: And actually, you convinced me to watch Trick or Treat because of that article, and like I said, I thought it was really fun, even if you're not familiar with metal music, which I'm not, I'm a total noob about metal.
15:29
SPEAKER_02: I you kept saying, Oh, Ozzy Osborne's in that movie, and I was like, I don't know what that guy looks like.
15:34
SPEAKER_02: Um but I watched it and I had a ton of fun, it's ridiculous, and I think um, you know, me as a gay, I see any you know man with big you know hair and black makeup and like a leotard, and I was like, oh, okay.
15:52
SPEAKER_02: I relate, throw some glitter on it, love it.
15:55
SPEAKER_05: That's that was hair metal, man.
15:56
SPEAKER_05: You grew up in the wrong decade.
15:58
SPEAKER_02: It was cool.
15:58
SPEAKER_02: I would have been all in on the image.
16:00
SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah.
16:01
SPEAKER_02: Have you seen the documentary, Hill Satan?
16:04
SPEAKER_05: You know, I actually haven't seen that yet, and I'm embarrassed to say that because I've actually cited it in different articles that I've written.
16:11
SPEAKER_05: Oh my god.
16:12
SPEAKER_05: Um, but I have I have um visited the Satanic Temple in Salem, Massachusetts.
16:19
SPEAKER_02: So you don't even need to see the documentary, you've lived it.
16:22
SPEAKER_05: They're some of the coolest people.
16:24
SPEAKER_05: I mean, they they run, there's it's they're such nice people, and say Satanism is totally not what people think it is, um, especially modern Satanism.
16:33
SPEAKER_02: I had no idea.
16:34
SPEAKER_02: And then I watched that documentary and it's really eye-opening.
16:36
SPEAKER_02: Yeah and uh definitely goes hand in hand of this idea that you've been talking about, about um, you know, how they're using the image of Satan to more be like thought-provoking and kind of push uh people to question the beliefs and thoughts that are established and that people don't question.
16:54
SPEAKER_02: Right.
16:54
SPEAKER_02: So I feel like that kind of goes hand in hand with this uh metal exploitation stuff that you're talking about, and uh just because something's like young or new or not of like what maybe older generations or younger generations or anyone knows already, like it takes a little understanding.
17:12
SPEAKER_05: Sure.
17:13
SPEAKER_02: Sure.
17:13
SPEAKER_05: So yeah, they're they're both very um metal and horror are very much the misfit subgenres, so I think that's why so many people are fans of both, and it's like a Venn diagram, we just kind of hang out in the middle, and I'm definitely one of those people.
17:26
SPEAKER_02: So yeah, I have a little bit of trouble with metal just because um you know, even when I watch uh horror, like I I like less like the gritty grungy horror and a little more of like the polished fun horror.
17:40
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
17:41
SPEAKER_02: So um I think I told you um over text that when they put on Belinda Carlisle in this movie, I was like, oh now here's a jam.
17:50
SPEAKER_02: So again, I also listen to a lot of 80s like lady pop.
17:54
SPEAKER_06: So I mean, yeah, yeah, I'm like opposite.
17:58
SPEAKER_06: I can't.
17:59
SPEAKER_02: I know actually when I was watching Trick or Treat, the 1986 movie, I was thinking like, oh, I would totally be one of these squares that's bullying the metal kid.
18:08
SPEAKER_02: Oh I wouldn't be a bully, but uh be a square.
18:13
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'd be a square.
18:14
SPEAKER_02: I'd have like a sweater tight around my neck or something.
18:16
SPEAKER_04: Boring.
18:18
SPEAKER_02: Uh did you have anything to add to your first reaction to We Summon the Darkness, your general reaction, I guess you should say not really.
18:25
SPEAKER_05: I mean, we'll we'll dive in deeper once we get into like the twist and the whole diggity dirt of it.
18:30
SPEAKER_05: So not really.
18:31
SPEAKER_05: Let's let's proceed.
18:32
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I would say that mine was I've I think initially I like the movie, but um and seeing Trick or Treat actually kind of helped me understand kind of the format of this movie because at first I was like, here, I've been watching this movie for like half an hour and it's just some kids running around.
18:50
SPEAKER_02: Like, you know, it just seemed kind of like a teen fun thing.
18:53
SPEAKER_02: Um, and I was like, kill someone already.
18:55
SPEAKER_02: I think just like everything in this movie to me is like between like 40 and 60 percent well done.
19:02
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's I think that's what it is.
19:04
SPEAKER_05: It there's so many glimmers of like, oh, it they had something, and then they just drop the ball for me.
19:10
SPEAKER_05: Um, and again, a lot of this is coming from a place of because I love that subgenre so much, and because I don't see hardly any women in the heavy metal horror protagonist roles.
19:22
SPEAKER_05: It's it's predominantly much like the horror genre.
19:25
SPEAKER_05: People think, oh, it's like a boys' club, and it's like, no, women listen to that stuff too, you know?
19:29
SPEAKER_05: And I never see that in these movies, uh, rarely, hardly ever.
19:32
SPEAKER_05: Um, and that article I wrote for BD, like I think like one of them actually has a woman as a girl who listens to metal in them, like that's it.
19:40
SPEAKER_05: So I was pumped and seeing.
19:41
SPEAKER_05: I was like, oh, cool.
19:42
SPEAKER_05: Like these are like three badass chicks that like know their shit going to a show, and they're they're kind of cool.
19:47
SPEAKER_05: I didn't I kind of got the hint that they were up to something because they were a little bit kind of weird, but like I didn't know what, and I kind of like them.
19:54
SPEAKER_05: And then when the movie shifts, I didn't like them and I didn't know who to root for, I didn't really care.
19:59
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think um, I mean, if we can just go ahead and talk about the twist now because there's just that's what I want to talk about right now.
20:06
SPEAKER_02: So, I mean it's revealed kind of halfway through the movie that the young gals have gone to this concert to lure a couple of metal men back to their house so that they can kill them uh to make it look like a satanic sacrifice, like has been in the news with the satanic panic.
20:23
SPEAKER_02: And um, instead they are some sort of uh religious Christ-following group that is trying to get people to be afraid of Satan and turn to the church for uh redemption.
20:35
SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
20:36
SPEAKER_02: I think cool idea.
20:38
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I I I agree.
20:39
SPEAKER_05: I it's um, and again, like I'm coming from a place of what I wanted versus what actually the movie is, and that's unfair, and I do I do recognize that, but I'm also kind of just like, man, you had me.
20:50
SPEAKER_05: Like these girls were kind of cool, and I was into it, and then when you split those roles, I didn't I didn't like anyone because I didn't care, I didn't like the dudes in the movie.
20:58
SPEAKER_05: And not that they didn't like that, I just didn't care about them, I didn't know them well enough.
21:00
SPEAKER_05: So I was like, who the hell am I rooting for?
21:02
SPEAKER_05: I don't care what happens next.
21:04
SPEAKER_05: I think that's where they kind of fall.
21:05
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think that the I I I agree totally.
21:08
SPEAKER_02: I think that the boys are boring, and even like they're all drinking and they're all they're they're just douchey enough where I'm like, ew, you're kind of icky, because they say, like, oh, you don't want to have sex with me?
21:18
SPEAKER_02: What?
21:18
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and it's like no, you you um boring boy.
21:23
SPEAKER_05: Well, so well, basically like they lure them back to the one girl's her mom's house or dad's house, whatever it is.
21:30
SPEAKER_05: Um, and they they make you believe that we're like they kind of throw a red herring with the one dude.
21:37
SPEAKER_05: He has like a switchblade or something or a knife.
21:38
SPEAKER_02: Sorry, which he never uses again, I don't think.
21:41
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, but they they make it look like, oh well, we have to look out for him because he's got a switchblade.
21:45
SPEAKER_05: And that's where you think the movie's headed.
21:47
SPEAKER_05: You're like, oh shit, these girls who I, you know, we're we're behind.
21:50
SPEAKER_05: We like these girls.
21:51
SPEAKER_05: They they might they might be in some kind of danger because these dudes they brought back with them might be like, you know, jerks or who knows.
21:57
SPEAKER_05: And of course it's not that it's they're the real threat is the the women.
22:01
SPEAKER_05: And I just I don't know.
22:02
SPEAKER_05: I I was like, why'd you do that?
22:03
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
22:04
SPEAKER_02: And it's hard because even after there's this twist, um I still like the the women more.
22:13
SPEAKER_02: And they're cool.
22:15
SPEAKER_02: I still like their personalities.
22:17
SPEAKER_02: But the thing is is that their motive and mission is just so like irrid irredeemable.
22:24
SPEAKER_02: Like there's nothing to like about what they're doing that it makes it really hard to keep liking them.
22:29
SPEAKER_02: Because there are so many movies that have like bad ladies that you still like.
22:33
SPEAKER_02: Like I mean like the craft or even like final girls from a few years ago.
22:39
SPEAKER_02: Like there are so many where you can like a bad character but there's just nothing to like about these like judgy we're better than you girls.
22:48
SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
22:48
SPEAKER_02: And Judgy not in a fun bitchy way but judgy in like a damn you to hell thing.
22:53
SPEAKER_02: Right.
22:54
SPEAKER_02: So that was I think my biggest problem was like you I didn't know who to like because I still liked the girls but I I knew that I you know don't actually like them.
23:04
SPEAKER_05: Yeah it's so we forgot to mention like in the beginning um they they're they're driving to we basically we kind of skipped the whole beginning yeah no I just wanted to talk about the twist we can go back now.
23:15
SPEAKER_05: We can kind of go back but um yeah so basically these girls they're all hanging out they're in their car and they're like bullshit and whatever and a couple of gals just you know shooting the shit talking about what were the things they're eating like ring pops in so 80 well I wrote a few things down because I thought it was funny.
23:33
SPEAKER_02: Uh one of them says that when you're attracted to someone your pupils dilate so it makes you more attractive and then the other one says she peed in a pickle jar recently.
23:42
SPEAKER_05: Yeah classy brought no metal metal um yeah and then basically they I think they they went to a gas station and they see on the TV set that there's this pastor also Johnny Knoxville who's like preach it's basically an and and how the hell I never say this right evangelical priest or pastor whatever who's just spewing a bunch of bullshit and which seems to be a trope of all of these movies there's some sort of bad pastor character from what I can tell.
24:13
SPEAKER_05: And then but I did like how he comes back around because you're first you're like why is this important why do I care and then he eventually comes back into the picture and we you know yeah I thought it was purely contextual just trying to put us in the 80s.
24:25
SPEAKER_02: Yeah and uh what was I gonna say well I mean then they're driving and these boys drive past and they throw what turns out to be a chocolate milkshake on the windshield but I was like dude someone just shit all over their car.
24:39
SPEAKER_05: That's what it looked like and uh yeah they get their little revenge which I which I dug I was like these chicks are what do they do?
24:46
SPEAKER_05: I think they they they throw fireworks into their van that's what it was yeah and that was which is a pretty ballsy move.
24:52
SPEAKER_05: Yeah I was like these chicks are awesome and then yeah they uh they go to the show um even on my notes here I wrote talking to three men that are boring the ones like oh I'm uh they're they're all in a band right and the ones like oh I'm moving away to go they're just yeah they're all kind of bland I mean they're they're they're they're fine they're just they're not really anything important but yeah they take them back home and they're playing like never have I ever and they're drinking I actually thought this was a pretty fun reveal here.
25:22
SPEAKER_05: Same same.
25:24
SPEAKER_02: Yeah she says never have I ever poisoned anyone's drink and all three of the girls are like oops yeah and you're you don't know if you're like wait why do they do this?
25:33
SPEAKER_05: Because you again you like these girls are like why are they doing this?
25:36
SPEAKER_05: And they were like oh shit were they up to and I thought maybe they had actually known these dudes from somewhere else and just were kind of pretending like they didn't know them.
25:43
SPEAKER_05: They were trying to get back at them for something like I I had no idea where it was going.
25:46
SPEAKER_05: Yeah me neither at all but yeah I I did I did like that reveal as well.
25:51
SPEAKER_02: Yeah and then you know they awaken they're shirtless the men are all tied up and the ladies have set up this like scene of like a ritual and they just like do this thing that is just such a yawn in every movie where they just they it's not even like you can tell me a little bit about what you're doing fine whatever.
26:08
SPEAKER_02: But they just it's like 10 minutes of them being like here is like bullet for bullet what we had on our vision board for this ritual.
26:16
SPEAKER_05: It's so much exposition.
26:17
SPEAKER_05: It's like it's and I and I you they kind of lost me.
26:20
SPEAKER_02: I was like wait what and I was kind of like meh and I just kind of start to lose interest um yeah and it's weird because for how much they explain here they never say specifically what they are what they're trying to do.
26:31
SPEAKER_02: They just allude to it she says I mean she gets pretty like like Jesus is my man I don't know what she says.
26:37
SPEAKER_02: But they never say sp says vaguely like after people see this who do they turn to and she doesn't say the church or anything she just like asked and I was like so wait like are you trying to get more people in your church?
26:49
SPEAKER_02: Are you trying to like uh convert more people like what are you trying to do?
26:53
SPEAKER_05: Right.
26:53
unknown: Right.
26:54
SPEAKER_02: So and then later I mean it turns out that um well I mean like past or whatever but her the people that she's you know killing for it's part of like a a women's shelter Christian like there are just so many layers to this that I was like wait but why like why can't this just be a church or something?
27:13
SPEAKER_05: Yeah I I wanted to address like the whole thing is like religious zealotry right which I appreciate I appreciated that they kind of made it so that like this whole movie was not about Satanists it was not it wasn't that it was about crazy pe real super extremist religious people who want to you know abstract their beliefs on people but I don't know they keep bringing up uh like brainwashing did you notice that like many times they kept bringing up brainwashing and I was just like okay like but why like who why are you brainwashed like I know they were brainwashed by like the pastor but I was like why like why like they never kind of went explain that and that that's what they should have explained.
27:46
SPEAKER_02: I don't know I just didn't off the top of my head like I'm not getting recalling that.
27:51
SPEAKER_02: But I mean I think you know religion is kind of like we've talked before on the podcast with Caroline and Ian about how religion is just a cold.
27:58
SPEAKER_02: Sure.
27:59
SPEAKER_02: It's something that you like turn to and you know there's this hierarchy of command and everything and just the whole thing again not to shit on anyone's religion or anything but like there is just like this this power dynamic in religion that can't be ignored.
28:14
SPEAKER_05: It's it's extremism.
28:15
SPEAKER_05: It's when people who take religion and do awful things with it that's that's the issue.
28:22
SPEAKER_02: When people do great things with it that's fine but these girls clearly are not that yeah and I think what's interesting about this movie is one it is a surprise that this happens but it's because you know they're specifically playing on the whole thing with the satanic panic in the 80s is that the like you know metal and horror and all these things whatever drugs I don't know that's being challenged and feared is sp it's specifically those things because it was a Christian culture that is accusing right you know metal for being satanic and stuff.
28:57
SPEAKER_02: So what's interesting that I loved about this movie is that it is you know the Christians creating the image themselves to kind of get themselves the hype.
29:06
SPEAKER_02: So I think that's really smart.
29:07
SPEAKER_02: But again it's in the explanation that you know maybe don't give us that much but it's in the explanation and the execution that I was kind of like but you haven't made that meaningful or even quite connected the dots for me enough to really ground me in that uh time setting.
29:24
SPEAKER_05: I think what my issue was is that it feels like this is this is like a number one movie sin when you make a twist just for the sake of a twist, just for the sake of having a twist.
29:33
SPEAKER_05: It's not it's not like oh that makes sense like you look back like look at the sixth sense.
29:37
SPEAKER_05: It's like you look back like oh that makes sense like he was dead the whole time.
29:41
SPEAKER_05: Spoiler alert you know but it's like that it all kind of makes sense when you rewatch it this movie is just like I it's they it feels like they were kind of like oh you know we should do and then just plopped it in and that was it.
29:52
SPEAKER_05: And I think that was kind of disappointing you know um it feels like I wanted to mention too that the pacing in this is super weird.
29:59
SPEAKER_05: It's like like you like you mentioned like the first the beginning is kind of slow.
30:03
SPEAKER_05: I didn't mind it admittedly I was kind of wondering where it was all gonna head I had no idea yeah because after the twist there's an hour left I was like and it's all just a bunch of they don't know where to go after that.
30:13
SPEAKER_02: It's like after you find out what they are they're just like okay we're gonna we're gonna we're gonna hunt the guys and then the one girl Bev um I think I think her name's Bev played by Amy Forsyth she's like the one who's kind of like has like a moral conscience that she's kind of like and she's boring yeah and I'm like why are you helping I think she doesn't know she's kind of conflicted of what she believes and why she is here with these girls and she's trying to help the dudes to get away it's just it was just weird it's like once you see what they're like you know she's heard the plan she knows what's gonna happen but after she sees it she's like oh no we're actually killing people um what I hate is one they've purposely showed us that the house that they're in is massive and so like my thought was like oh cool there's a lot of space to run around um but then you know they kill one of the guys right off the bat and then the other two guys run into a closet and they're there the entire movie until like the last 10 minutes.
31:11
SPEAKER_02: And I just that like you were saying the pacing because it's like boring and then a glimpse of action and then it's boring again with just totally stagnant uh setting and I think I even read a couple of the like reviews that were on Rotten Tomatoes and there were at least like two or three that were like what a great cat and mouse and I was like cat and mouse no this is just like two two groups of people standing on either side of a door and the the one there's one scene where like the um I forget the actress's name but she plays Maddie or I forget I forget who what her name is but the the blonde and she's like twerking on the door and I'm like what what are you doing?
31:50
SPEAKER_05: It was just so bizarre.
31:52
SPEAKER_02: I was like I don't understand uh yeah yeah there's a shot from like in between her legs yeah it's so weird that was that was truly weird is that what you would do if you were you had some dudes like in the closet like I mean like don't ask me but yeah the di some of the dialogue was kind of weird it was just weird but um yeah and even I think Bev goes out to the tool shed to get something I don't know what she's gonna get and she's there for such a long time and she like finds some clues but like she already knows what's going on so I don't know what the clues are about.
32:26
SPEAKER_02: Like there's just some strange things where she disappears for like half the movie.
32:30
SPEAKER_05: Yeah it's so weird.
32:31
SPEAKER_02: And then oh the stepmom we gotta talk about the stepmom I know she comes in and causes a problem and then they kill her so quick.
32:39
SPEAKER_05: It's so like and she was just being I mean wouldn't you be suspicious to she was like um bitch what the fuck's going on yeah and you can totally see like the spray paint on the doors behind them and stuff.
32:52
SPEAKER_05: It's it's yeah I mean she as she deserves to know she's like what the hell's going on and then they just kill her and I'm like wow you guys are you bitches are roofless like they just have no they have no regard for like comedy and it's so strange because I think so this movie's supposed to be comedic but so much of the comedy that's been happening up until now has been grounded in kind of like taking itself seriously.
33:16
SPEAKER_02: Yeah and then this lady comes in and she's doing like full on like Myra Rose uh like shits creek like crazy lady and she just like oh just here to get my passport oh my god like you guys are y'all having a party I didn't know you were here I called the police and then it's just like and they just kill her.
33:36
SPEAKER_02: Yeah it was at least give me an exciting murder they didn't do that I can't yeah I don't know and Bev comes back with some like bit what what is that it's like corkscrew electronic some sort of like digging device something like that yeah I don't even know I don't know it's something it looks like the um this was my first thought is it looks like the guitar from Slumber Party Massacre 2.
34:01
SPEAKER_02: Yes um and that could have been inspiration we don't know yeah and I mean I saw it and I thought like oh that looks like a guitar metal um um and like the best we get out of that is she slashes the main girl's leg.
34:15
SPEAKER_05: So I was like can we okay here's a positive I know we wouldn't rag on this movie a lot but Alexandra Di Dario slaps in this movie.
34:23
SPEAKER_05: She slaps she's awesome she is by far the reason why I would say like if you're on the fence maybe check it out for her she goes from like kind of like really like kind of sweet kind of likable she's like when you first meet her you're like oh she seems pretty cool she seems kind of like she's a little bit anxious and nervous but she's fine and then she's kind of like the leader and then when shit goes off the rails she goes off the rails and she just kills it.
34:48
SPEAKER_05: She's like kinetic crazy like very expressive face that has these big blue eyes that you're just like drawn to and she has she's she absolutely slaps in this movie.
34:57
SPEAKER_02: Those eyes are gorgeous yeah very much um what's the main the lead from the craft not the lead but the lead the mean one yeah for Feroo Bulk she uh I did not know that name I've never heard that before that's her name she plays she plays uh Nancy right that's what you're thinking of yeah with the black the scary one yeah foroza bulk you didn't know that's her name no but what a cool name uh yeah very much kind of that energy yeah defin she definitely explores that whole like crazy uh yeah she's she's Nancy from the craft incarnated I I totally agree with that yeah yeah which is I mean haven't they talked about remaking the craft I think they're supposed to um I know it I'm sure it got delayed because of everything that's going on right now but yeah I I don't know if they actually made it or if it was actually shot yet but yeah they they they casted it so well that seems like a movie that I could see being very successful remade because I mean as great as it is and you know as much as you we still like revisiting it like that is a movie that is very 90s and I think could work very well updated to be more contemporary.
36:12
SPEAKER_05: Um and like man like just take her just plop her in same costume same that's actually a great idea she would make a great Nancy yeah I you know what I'm actually now that we're talking about it I'm gonna look for if they're what the process on on that is because I uh I'm curious.
36:26
SPEAKER_02: Well Alino confirmed here on the air that Julianne thinks I'm a genius so thank you.
36:32
SPEAKER_05: You heard it here first kids.
36:34
SPEAKER_02: And I guess the final twist well and we can come back to the craft you can keep researching and you know whatever.
36:39
SPEAKER_02: But I I just want to say the final twist of the movie would be that Johnny Knoxville the the pastor that we saw on TV is um Alexis's dad which if you were surprised by that twist um I mean I'm not gonna say anything mean to you but just like be a little more observant.
36:57
SPEAKER_02: And it's this whole you know back and forth of him being disappointed in her because she had one job and it was just to kill these three dweebs and uh you know he's gonna kill her.
37:07
SPEAKER_02: It's this whole hubbub.
37:09
SPEAKER_02: And um he's great.
37:12
SPEAKER_02: I thought he was really funny.
37:13
SPEAKER_02: But just the whole situation I just by the end of this movie I was bored with it.
37:18
SPEAKER_05: Yeah um before before we get back into that uh so they did cast it it's actually gonna be a Blumhouse movie.
37:24
SPEAKER_05: I don't know do we know that?
37:26
SPEAKER_05: Yeah that could go either way who knows um and uh yeah it's all black craftsmith black ooh there's a fight in words now you're absolutely right now anyway anywho yeah I um my god why didn't they save the whole black Christmas uh team and concept for the craft that would have made more sense oh my god okay well that's a different thing y'all then again y'all know if they fucked up the craft like they fucked up black Christmas we would have been up in arms like that's like but I'm saying they could have fucked up the craft and not fucked up black Christmas would have devastated me but yeah um yeah I I'm trying to think of like other things in this movie that like I I really I gotta say I really I really lost interest after as we were waiting for this to kind of wrap up I was kind of just like you know what I will say Johnny Knoxville's kind of fun in this movie.
38:26
SPEAKER_05: Did you like his performance in this movie?
38:27
SPEAKER_05: I thought he was pretty cool.
38:28
SPEAKER_05: I thought he was funny he's not well I know you're not familiar but like he's not really casted in stuff like this much.
38:34
SPEAKER_02: He's usually like the goofy kind of like doofy jackassy kind of you know um and yeah he's he's never casted in like the kind of evil like you know maniacal antagonists and stuff so I I kind of dug that yeah I actually enjoyed him and um DiDario their back and forth because they both were very energetic and aggressive.
38:58
SPEAKER_02: But also like did not buy them as father daughter at all.
39:02
SPEAKER_06: No.
39:04
SPEAKER_02: But I that's not uh I still liked what they were doing.
39:07
SPEAKER_05: It's one of those things where I'm pretty sure in real life Alexander DiDario is like 34 I think and she's playing a teenager.
39:15
SPEAKER_05: It's it's kinda it's it's like the whole she's that old I yeah she's she's older than me and I'm I'm gonna be 30.
39:20
SPEAKER_05: Um she it's kind of like the whole Rizzo thing from Greece.
39:25
SPEAKER_05: They casted her when she was like 35 and she played a high schooler and it's just like really not that the girls in the We Saw in the darkness are supposed to be like high schoolers but they're supposed to be young we're we're right kind of I mean I think I was a little confused about their age but I was definitely thinking like high school yeah I don't know but Johnny Oxville is a little bit too young maybe playing they had to have been high school because they were being so weird about drinking.
39:47
SPEAKER_05: You think so?
39:48
SPEAKER_02: Yeah yeah I even wrote at the beginning I said peer pressure my God oh yeah you did say that yeah um I also wrote in here I was specifically I wrote father daughter moment is yikes because the whole like when they were you know doing their thing with each other I was like oh my god like are they like doing it I mean you think that that was kind of implied it could have been I don't think it was implied I just thought the energy from the scene was weird maybe he's maybe she's like a um like daughter in Christ or something maybe he's not literal daughter oh god oh god yeah maybe when she calls him father it's like oh father you know it's like daddy that's what I'm saying that went in two different directions uh now I wanted to ask you yeah this is supposed to be in the uh the the legacy the canon of this these metal exploitation films correct right is that like confirmed or do we just assume uh well I mean if you're asking me it's it's not gonna be in that canon because it's not that at all it's um but I I mean it's marketed to be that I'll say that and as we all know not er some movies are not what they are marketed to be so yeah it um it would not fall under that category for me it's uh it's a poser movie these girls are they're they're all they're doing it they're faking they're faking their way through just to get to lure some dudes and that's not cool.
41:13
SPEAKER_05: Um they dropped all these names they're dropping like Slayer and fucking all these other bands and I'm like cool like that these chicks are badass and then there's just they I guess they did some research beforehand and try to kind of try to lure these dudes and act them act like they were kind of part of that thing and they're not um yeah go ahead.
41:32
SPEAKER_02: Uh because I think like thematically this seems to fit in but kind of um looking at these past movies you know I watched trick or treat and then I watched you know a couple of trailers so I know everything.
41:47
SPEAKER_02: But it seems like you know the big thing this is missing is the soundtrack.
41:52
SPEAKER_02: Because there's actually not very much metal in it.
41:54
SPEAKER_02: And like we said earlier there's actually you know pop music.
41:58
SPEAKER_05: There's pop music in it.
41:59
SPEAKER_05: And uh yeah I like I said I don't I don't think it would go under that category.
42:04
SPEAKER_05: I you know not to spoil the the article that I wrote but like I didn't spoil it I gotta go read it.
42:12
SPEAKER_02: I had to I know but I had to I had to act like this was a metal horror movie just to kind of like it's like oh well this that's what it's being marketed as but I knew that that's not what it was so um yeah yeah but you know I I saw I did see that shockwave and nightmare university's own Rebecca McKendry who's also a metal fan like me she is calling this a metal horror movie so I don't know and honestly everything out of that woman's mouth is fact and genius so I'll take that um well and I think there's room in this movie for these like uh very stylized like set to music sequences they just don't do it so I thought it was kind of I mean they they did do it but to heaven is a place on earth and so I th I thought that was really strange that it's fitting into the maybe it's money and licensing and that was an issue but it fits into I think this genre so well except for not having the metal music.
43:12
SPEAKER_02: So I thought it was strange that the concert was like the only time that there was actually metal music.
43:17
SPEAKER_05: You know and I guess I I know this is probably a stretch too but I guess I just was so disappointed that these girl that like in the rare occasion that we do get women in the in these roles in these kind of movies that they weren't that that I was kind of like oh you're supposed you're trying to make us feel that like the dudes are the heroes that's kind of misogynistic to me.
43:36
SPEAKER_02: Well I think that Bev is the hero and but the the the dudes are like this is like I said earlier this is not a like oh these girls are so bad they're so fun I want them to win like no we do not want them to win.
43:50
SPEAKER_02: So I mean the dudes maybe they're not heroes but it does definitely set it like these girls are bad these boys are good.
43:59
SPEAKER_05: Yeah Yeah, I just I don't know.
44:01
SPEAKER_05: I wasn't like I think it was it was a it was a reversal of roles, which I will give it credit for.
44:05
SPEAKER_05: It kind of subverted expectations, but I just kind of I just didn't really care for it.
44:09
SPEAKER_05: Um because I I I it's kind of like the girls who we've been with and like who actually are about this kind of lifestyle are not at all who they think who we think that they are, and it kind of ruined it.
44:20
SPEAKER_05: So I don't I it kind of goes against the whole thing and I think it uh it undoes itself.
44:24
SPEAKER_02: So I'm I just don't really well and besides this besides this strange thing at the end where they say like the pastor Johnny Knoxville is running like a women's shelter, they did not need to be women versus men, and they could have mixed up the sides.
44:40
SPEAKER_02: Imagine, imagine this uh the evil ones, two girls and a gay.
44:45
SPEAKER_02: I would have loved that.
44:46
SPEAKER_04: Pitch, lumpast are you listening?
44:49
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so I mean it didn't have to be men versus women, so I don't know exactly why that would be the case.
44:55
SPEAKER_02: And then you could have had your cool metal girl that was not a secret Christian.
44:59
SPEAKER_02: Right.
45:00
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I completely agree.
45:01
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I don't know why they did that.
45:02
SPEAKER_05: And I they they may have gone through with it because of good intentions of like, oh, well, you know, these chicks are like you're not expecting them to be like be like the the the murderers.
45:12
SPEAKER_05: Like that's kind of cool.
45:12
SPEAKER_05: Like they're like, and it's like, yeah, that would have been cool if I liked them, but I end up not like really liking them because they're not they're they're awful, you know.
45:19
SPEAKER_05: So it's just wasn't and and like you said, not they're not they're they're bad in a way that's like not like oh likeable bad where you're like oh I still like Nancy like Nancy from the craft, for example.
45:30
SPEAKER_05: Like, I still love Nancy from the craft and yeah, she's a badass.
45:33
SPEAKER_05: She's a badass.
45:34
SPEAKER_05: These girls, like they start off that way, and then you're like, Oh, I can't stand them.
45:37
SPEAKER_05: I don't like any of these people.
45:38
SPEAKER_02: And the thing about Nancy is that it's like, oh, like she's not a phrase, like she's misunderst she's not misunderstood, but she's she's just like she she's not bad through and through.
45:52
SPEAKER_02: Like she needs to be redeemed, she needs to feel the love and friendship, the support to get herself from being evil.
45:59
SPEAKER_02: And these ladies, they just want to be bad.
46:01
SPEAKER_05: Well, and that too, and and that's the thing too.
46:03
SPEAKER_05: We don't we get more contacts with uh movies like The Craft, like with Nancy, like we we saw her background, for example.
46:10
SPEAKER_05: Like, you know, she she came from a really shitty home life.
46:13
SPEAKER_05: Like if you if you recall, like, you know, her stepdad was awful and abusive to her and her mom.
46:17
SPEAKER_05: Like, you know, so you have sympathy for her, and you're like, okay, I even though she's terrible and she has a power complex, I get it, I get where she's coming from.
46:24
SPEAKER_05: These girls, like, we didn't know them well enough to to care.
46:27
SPEAKER_05: I mean, they we we we got a surface level understanding of them, which is fine, but then when we got to know the other stuff, it's like, well, that's not enough for me to feel either way.
46:37
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and maybe like the blonde one was brainwashed or something, and we can be sympathetic to her, but like the main one, she is like, I took it to be like she is in on the plan creation, she is in on the process.
46:49
SPEAKER_02: This is her and her father in this bougie house.
46:52
SPEAKER_02: Like, she is not being abused, she is living a cush life, it looks like.
46:56
SPEAKER_06: Right.
46:56
SPEAKER_02: So I don't know.
46:58
SPEAKER_02: All right, well, let's get to these wrap-up questions.
47:01
SPEAKER_02: And my first one, the classic, what is the most memorable murder from We Summon the Darkness?
47:08
SPEAKER_02: And I will go ahead and tell you right off the bat, none of them.
47:11
SPEAKER_02: I don't remember a murder from this movie.
47:13
SPEAKER_02: They are so boring, I do not have a most memorable.
47:16
SPEAKER_05: No, and in fact, I don't even really have a most memorable moment, even if we were going to that route.
47:21
SPEAKER_05: Um, I I yeah, there I mean, yeah.
47:25
SPEAKER_02: I mean, I'll give it like the the moment where they reveal that they've drugged the drinks.
47:29
SPEAKER_02: Like, that was exciting.
47:30
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you know what?
47:31
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I'll say I'll agree with you.
47:32
SPEAKER_05: I'll say that too.
47:33
SPEAKER_05: And I'll say like there were moments where I was just like, where is this going?
47:36
SPEAKER_05: And I did dig that, not knowing where the hell it was all gonna head up.
47:39
SPEAKER_05: But yeah, as for murderers, it was kind of boring.
47:41
SPEAKER_05: It's for being so badass.
47:43
SPEAKER_05: And I was just like, okay, they stabbed the one dude in the stomach, I think.
47:46
SPEAKER_05: They said like the fat guy, and I was just like, all right.
47:49
SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
47:50
SPEAKER_02: Like it just wasn't they stabbed the mom, they shoot one of the boys.
47:55
SPEAKER_02: I mean, I guess they hit the main girl with the car, which we don't see, but the image of like her hair and blood stuck on the front of the Jeep, like that's kind of cool.
48:04
SPEAKER_05: That's kind of cool, yeah.
48:06
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean, even I mean, effects-wise, there wasn't really much to it, right?
48:11
SPEAKER_05: And there wasn't really many effects.
48:13
SPEAKER_02: I was, I don't know why this pissed me off so much, but they push the main girl out of the window kind of on accident.
48:19
SPEAKER_02: She splats on the sidewalk.
48:22
SPEAKER_02: And I remember being like, Oh, cool, yeah, whatever.
48:25
SPEAKER_02: And then they ran out of the house, uh, and they're in the front, and she's laying on the ground.
48:30
SPEAKER_02: And I was so pissed because they gave us like no really like map of the house.
48:35
SPEAKER_02: We don't know where things are, and you see her laying on the ground, and I'm not, I kid you not.
48:39
SPEAKER_02: It took me like a full minute where I was like, Who is that on the ground?
48:44
SPEAKER_02: And I was so confused because I just I thought that her bedroom was facing the back of the house because you don't even see them go up to the bedroom, you'll they're just in the bedroom or they're downstairs.
48:54
SPEAKER_02: And so for some reason, it just really infuriated me that I was like, wait, that's her?
48:59
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, and that that's that's ineffective to me.
49:02
SPEAKER_05: That's why I kind of dropped the ball with that stuff.
49:04
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I agree.
49:05
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so um on a scary scale, one to five, what would you rate we summon the darkness?
49:11
SPEAKER_05: Ugh, I mean, one.
49:13
SPEAKER_05: It's not it's not scary at all.
49:14
SPEAKER_05: It's uh, I mean, again, I will I will totally give the Dario credit.
49:19
SPEAKER_05: She when she has to amp up the crazy.
49:21
SPEAKER_05: I mean, I would not want to be near her when she's crazy.
49:23
SPEAKER_05: I would not be one of her near uh that character, Alexis, but uh otherwise, it's not scary, no.
49:28
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'll give it a one as well because like people die.
49:31
SPEAKER_02: Like there's a chase here and there.
49:32
SPEAKER_02: So I'll give it a one for that.
49:34
SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, like I'm tempted to give it a zero, but I'm gonna give it a one.
49:38
SPEAKER_02: I gave Vivarium a zero because I was like, you know, that's not what I was trying to, it wasn't trying to be scary.
49:45
SPEAKER_02: Right, right.
49:46
SPEAKER_02: This one, like it was trying to be a bit more of a horror movie for sure.
49:50
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and uh, I just you know, sometimes you have to accept that smaller indie movies like just can't do everything that like I don't know, Cabin in the Woods can do, because I just love Cabin in the Woods.
50:02
SPEAKER_05: It all goes it all comes down to not to get into a tangent, but it all comes down to script.
50:06
SPEAKER_05: That's it all comes down to the writing.
50:08
SPEAKER_05: If you can get if you you have a good script, you can really do anything.
50:11
SPEAKER_05: That's all you really need.
50:13
SPEAKER_05: Um, but when the writing is so like up in the air, that's when it falters, you know?
50:17
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, everyone in there you could tell was on board.
50:20
SPEAKER_05: It's just that the writing itself was just kind of like just so so.
50:24
SPEAKER_02: And then would you give We Summon the Darkness a smash or a slash?
50:31
SPEAKER_05: Again, I this is sound so repetitive from when we did the hunt, but I'm so on the fence.
50:36
SPEAKER_05: Like I oh god um yeah, I guess I'd probably would slash it because I think even though I would I would still say like if you're interested, I would say check it out.
50:46
SPEAKER_05: I think it's I it I had a good enough time for some of it to recommend it, but I think it fails on a lot of its merits, so I think I'd say slash.
50:56
SPEAKER_02: You know, if it were free, I'd be like, Yeah, everyone go watch it.
50:59
SPEAKER_02: It was a fine time.
51:00
SPEAKER_02: But since it's not like I don't know, I would slash it and kind of say don't watch it.
51:05
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, okay.
51:06
SPEAKER_02: And I mean I don't want to say don't watch it because like it's all especially right now, like support all the horror that you can.
51:12
SPEAKER_05: Sure.
51:13
SPEAKER_02: But like if it were twenty dollars, I'd be like, no way, Jose, I want my money back.
51:18
SPEAKER_02: But since it how much was it, like five dollars?
51:20
SPEAKER_05: It's I think it's like five or six bucks.
51:22
SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
51:22
SPEAKER_05: I mean, you could do better and you could do worse.
51:24
SPEAKER_05: It's like it's it's your call.
51:26
SPEAKER_02: So poster's cool.
51:28
SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
51:28
SPEAKER_02: With like the blue.
51:30
SPEAKER_05: There's so much it's so cool.
51:31
SPEAKER_05: I it recalls like an 80s slasher kind of you know, satanic panic, uh substant.
51:37
SPEAKER_05: Like I just it's so cool, man.
51:38
SPEAKER_05: This movie could have been awesome.
51:40
SPEAKER_05: And it wasn't.
51:41
SPEAKER_02: I mean, I would compare this more to like the Stranger Things 80s nostalgia stuff than to metal.
51:46
SPEAKER_05: Oh, for sure.
51:48
SPEAKER_02: So I mean, yeah, if you're into that.
51:50
SPEAKER_02: I wouldn't maybe watch this if you're into that, but don't watch this if you're wanting a horror movie.
51:56
SPEAKER_05: Or a heavy metal horror movie.
51:58
SPEAKER_05: If you're like me and what like that subgenre, don't expect that.
52:01
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, if you want 80s, go for it.
52:03
SPEAKER_05: We already ruined it for you, so I mean this.
52:06
SPEAKER_02: It's true.
52:07
SPEAKER_02: So, Julianne, we know that your favorite scary movie of all time is Rosemary's Baby.
52:13
SPEAKER_02: Correct?
52:13
SPEAKER_02: Confirm or deny?
52:15
SPEAKER_05: Confirm, baby.
52:16
SPEAKER_02: Well, and we know that my favorite scary movie of all time is Scream.
52:20
SPEAKER_02: Confirmed.
52:21
SPEAKER_05: Confirmed.
52:23
SPEAKER_02: But are you familiar with this podcast and our offerings?
52:27
SPEAKER_04: Well, yeah.
52:29
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, who isn't?
52:31
SPEAKER_02: Out of the movies that we've watched in season two of What's Your Favorite Scary Movie?
52:36
SPEAKER_02: What would you say is your favorite scary movie?
52:39
SPEAKER_05: You guys have been handling a quite a few bangers.
52:42
SPEAKER_05: Um, I'm gonna say, I'm gonna say though, Scream 4 is still my number one with your next a close contender.
52:50
SPEAKER_02: A very recent one.
52:51
SPEAKER_02: You're up on the news.
52:53
SPEAKER_05: I'm up on my shit, guys.
52:54
SPEAKER_05: And uh would American Werewolf in London be considered the season or no?
52:58
SPEAKER_02: Oh, hell yeah.
52:59
SPEAKER_05: Oh yeah, that's that's up there too.
53:01
SPEAKER_05: You chef's kiss, good stuff you guys have been picking for the most part.
53:05
SPEAKER_02: American Werewolf in London.
53:07
SPEAKER_02: Actually, I totally forgot that I've watched that recently, and that movie rules.
53:11
SPEAKER_02: Uh, but yeah, I'm gonna stick with Scream 4 as well.
53:14
SPEAKER_02: I think just like you with a close chaser of American Werewolf in London, and maybe I'm still kind of on Gretel and Hansel a little bit.
53:25
SPEAKER_02: Now that that's on VOD, I kind of want to download it again.
53:28
SPEAKER_05: Oh, I miss Gretel and Hansel.
53:30
SPEAKER_05: That was like the only good movie we got this year.
53:31
SPEAKER_05: No, I'm just kidding.
53:32
SPEAKER_05: I'm kidding.
53:33
SPEAKER_05: That's not that's not the case.
53:34
SPEAKER_05: There's a few.
53:35
SPEAKER_02: Like what?
53:36
SPEAKER_02: Name five.
53:38
SPEAKER_05: Invisible man.
53:39
SPEAKER_05: That was good.
53:40
SPEAKER_02: It was fine.
53:41
SPEAKER_05: It was fine.
53:42
SPEAKER_05: Okay.
53:42
SPEAKER_05: Parker says it was fine.
53:43
SPEAKER_05: It was good.
53:44
SPEAKER_02: Oh, it was good, it was good, whatever.
53:46
SPEAKER_05: Vivarium, I haven't seen Vivarium yet, so I I don't know that, but you you dug it, right?
53:51
SPEAKER_02: I know, but like what have you seen that you thought was good?
53:55
SPEAKER_04: Not much.
53:56
SPEAKER_02: Um see, that's what I'm saying.
53:58
SPEAKER_04: Not much, not much, yeah.
53:59
SPEAKER_05: I mean, Brahm's the boy too, obviously.
54:03
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, honestly, I think Gretel and Hansel is my favorite movie of the year right now.
54:07
SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
54:08
SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
54:10
SPEAKER_02: Which like shouldn't be like a like, ugh, I guess.
54:12
SPEAKER_05: But like Oh, we're well, I guess we can't count this because it's not actually out yet, but we both really love St.
54:18
SPEAKER_05: Maud, if that ever sees light of day.
54:21
SPEAKER_05: But doesn't really count.
54:22
SPEAKER_02: We'll see.
54:22
SPEAKER_02: Perhaps.
54:23
SPEAKER_02: Maybe uh everyone will hear more about it soon.
54:26
SPEAKER_05: Maybe.
54:27
SPEAKER_05: Probably not soon, but probably not soon, but we you will hear about it.
54:32
SPEAKER_02: Alright.
54:33
SPEAKER_02: So next time on this here podcast, it will just be me again doing a solo episode.
54:40
SPEAKER_02: And I'm very excited for this one because if what's your favorite scary movie is one thing, it is topical, of course.
54:47
SPEAKER_02: So next week we will be watching the very socially distant Unfriended.
54:53
SPEAKER_02: Which you can stream now on the HBO streaming services.
54:59
SPEAKER_02: While you're waiting for next week's episode, you can head on over to Apple Podcast and leave us a rating and a review.
55:06
SPEAKER_02: And if you need just an example of something that other people have written, um Cassie, or C4A S S-I-E, uh, wrote Five Stars, one of my favorite podcasts.
55:20
SPEAKER_02: There's a lot of sirens in the background, but I'm into it.
55:24
SPEAKER_06: Oh my god.
55:25
SPEAKER_02: We do live in New York, and sometimes it is just unavoidable.
55:30
SPEAKER_02: Uh, one thing though, she says, she disagrees with us.
55:33
SPEAKER_02: She says, Us is a great movie.
55:35
SPEAKER_02: So knives out, Cassie.
55:37
SPEAKER_02: I'm ready to fight.
55:39
SPEAKER_05: Knives out.
55:40
SPEAKER_04: I mean, a lot of people dig it, so you know.
55:44
SPEAKER_02: Don't get me started on us.
55:46
SPEAKER_02: Every time us keeps coming up in like like stuff I'm reading or what like people just keep talking about us, and I just wanted to stop.
55:54
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, it's not one of my favorites.
55:56
SPEAKER_02: It's gonna haunt me forever.
55:58
SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
55:58
SPEAKER_02: Anyway, thanks, Cassie.
56:00
SPEAKER_02: That means a lot.
56:01
SPEAKER_02: Leave us a rating interview.
56:03
SPEAKER_02: And until next time, Julianne, you'll be back soon, I'm sure.
56:08
SPEAKER_02: Uh because you're a fabulous friend and you're, you know, always excited to help me out, which means a lot.
56:14
SPEAKER_04: Thanks.
56:15
SPEAKER_02: Uh, if people want to find you on the internet, where can they look?
56:19
SPEAKER_04: Sure, it's at the Jewel Marie, the the J-U-L Marie on socials.
56:25
SPEAKER_02: And you can find her writing on Bloody Disgusting and Nightmarish Conjurings.
56:30
SPEAKER_02: Don't you have something coming up for Fingoria Plus, or did I make that up?
56:33
SPEAKER_05: I do.
56:33
SPEAKER_05: I do.
56:34
