- 0:02Speaker 1: Life audio. Today, I'll talk about that. John dreams of
- 0:09Speaker 1: a month long train ride and tries not to embarrass
- 0:12Speaker 1: himself in front of a Christian music legend. Meanwhile, I
- 0:15Speaker 1: get a flat tire in the weirdest way possible and
- 0:17Speaker 1: reveal the strange history of super glue, plus a conversation
- 0:21Speaker 1: about humility and how we're being shaped by the difficulties
- 0:23Speaker 1: in our lives. Today's episode is not sponsored by Best
- 0:26Speaker 1: Western Hotels. If we're the best, can you imagine how
- 0:29Speaker 1: bad the worst is? But first, a word from our
- 0:32Speaker 1: actual sponsor.
- 0:42Speaker 2: It's episode four oh one. The Bantertown train is still
- 0:46Speaker 2: squarely on the track. So I'm John, This is Johnny.
- 0:47Speaker 1: We're glad you joined us today. Stay off the tracks, kids, Yeah,
- 0:52Speaker 1: I mean unless you're not. Unless you're in the train
- 0:55Speaker 1: right or you are a train. That's the best place
- 0:58Speaker 1: to be. Really, the little engine that could do you.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Ever, Besides airports, you don't really get to do train travel.
- 1:06Speaker 1: I did that thing with Curry's dad. We did that
- 1:09Speaker 1: bucket list trip to the Grand Canyon and it was
- 1:11Speaker 1: by train, those from Williams, Arizona. I would recommend it.
- 1:15Speaker 1: I would recommend that trip for your family. John, I
- 1:17Speaker 1: feel like that you live the life. No, you wouldn't.
- 1:20Speaker 1: You wouldn't do that trip. I think you'd be like,
- 1:24Speaker 1: what are there? What is there for the whole family
- 1:27Speaker 1: to do? You that that is the trip I want
- 1:31Speaker 1: to take? Is it? Yeah?
- 1:32Speaker 2: You want to do Williams, I want to I want
- 1:35Speaker 2: to ride a train from like Seattle all the way
- 1:38Speaker 2: down the coast. No, I want to live on a
- 1:42Speaker 2: train for like a month ish.
- 1:44Speaker 1: I don't. I think that you've romanticized this to the
- 1:47Speaker 1: point where there's no way it could possibly help. You
- 1:48Speaker 1: would be you would be so stir crazy living on
- 1:52Speaker 1: a train, living on a train, I don't know. Maybe not.
- 1:57Speaker 1: I could live on a cruise ship for a month,
- 2:00Speaker 1: and one day you will, Bunny, I have a feeling
- 2:02Speaker 1: that's going to happen. I think you and Lord, that's
- 2:03Speaker 1: how you guys will retire. I mean, it's the same
- 2:05Speaker 1: sale the world. The same price basically is paying for
- 2:08Speaker 1: all your stuff here. Yeah, except for if you have
- 2:10Speaker 1: a medical emergency. You're kind of just Yeah, they got doctors,
- 2:13Speaker 1: They'll turn that boat around. It's no big deal. It's
- 2:17Speaker 1: easy to divert these cruise ships. Yeah, there's nothing they
- 2:20Speaker 1: love it too. They love it when you divert them.
- 2:22Speaker 1: You know, there are people on the I mean it's
- 2:24Speaker 1: a it is a whole thing. Yeah, no, I know,
- 2:26Speaker 1: and they have like there are people who do that
- 2:29Speaker 1: instead of going to the retirement homes, they just go.
- 2:31Speaker 2: But their cruise the world. The staff they like basically
- 2:34Speaker 2: you become a resident. You have all these deep connections
- 2:37Speaker 2: and they know where you are and what you're doing.
- 2:39Speaker 1: Again, I think you might be romanticising they have all
- 2:42Speaker 1: these deep connections. John's like, that's what I read. I
- 2:45Speaker 1: read in the data that there's deep connections and cruise
- 2:48Speaker 1: ship that I'm paying for. Yeah, I'm sure.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Struggle for a community a little bit.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Yeah that's okay. Well you got me, buddy.
- 2:55Speaker 2: Hey, that's not a struggle. Well, getting you in town to.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Struggle, I'm sorry. Sometimes it's tough to divert this ship too,
- 3:04Speaker 1: am I Right, we just got back. We were in
- 3:09Speaker 1: I had five days in a row, five cities and
- 3:11Speaker 1: five days, and then I got home and then I
- 3:13Speaker 1: went to a Lakers game last night. Yeah, I couldn't
- 3:16Speaker 1: believe you drove to Indianapolis. Well yeah, I mean it's
- 3:18Speaker 1: it's not worth flying. It's four and a half hours,
- 3:20Speaker 1: five hours. I just drove it last weekend, but I
- 3:23Speaker 1: mean the time you go to the airport an hour earlier,
- 3:24Speaker 1: two hours early. Now because of TSA and all that nonsense,
- 3:27Speaker 1: you may as well just drive it. It's worth it, dude,
- 3:31Speaker 1: bad drive. It's not awful. It's not awful.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Kentucky's like three lanes well paved as soon as you
- 3:36Speaker 2: get over the Tennessee line.
- 3:37Speaker 1: Coming back immediately. I went with the tour manager from
- 3:42Speaker 1: our Live and Laughing tour, which you can get dates
- 3:44Speaker 1: for at JOHNNYW dot com. There are we're coming up
- 3:48Speaker 1: on Dallas and Houston area. We're going to Cleveland and Crosby,
- 3:51Speaker 1: which are doall in Dallas, in Houston adjacent cities. And
- 3:56Speaker 1: then we're doing a couple of cities in Arkansas, Jonesborough
- 3:59Speaker 1: and where's the other one. It's near Little Rock. Anyway,
- 4:01Speaker 1: go to JOHNNYW dot com get tickets to those shows
- 4:04Speaker 1: because these shows have been so fun JOHNNYW dot com
- 4:07Speaker 1: Live and Laughing Door. But anyway, our tour manager, Jordan,
- 4:09Speaker 1: it's basket basketball. He's a Pacers fan, and he was like,
- 4:13Speaker 1: we were talking about Lebron and he was like, I said,
- 4:15Speaker 1: this maybe Lebron's last year. We don't know. Yeah, and
- 4:17Speaker 1: he was like, I've never seen it. He goes, it
- 4:19Speaker 1: would be cool, and so we just started looking up
- 4:20Speaker 1: game and we found this game and he's like, let's go.
- 4:22Speaker 1: So we went together and I say all that to
- 4:24Speaker 1: say this, everything's great, smooth. We stayed in the hotel
- 4:27Speaker 1: and hotel last night and then this morning we got
- 4:30Speaker 1: up to leave and he met me out front. We
- 4:32Speaker 1: get in, we had to start heading home, and you know,
- 4:34Speaker 1: it's a long drive home. I said, can we go
- 4:36Speaker 1: home earlier? Then? You might want to because I want
- 4:39Speaker 1: to do this podcast today because we've put off our
- 4:40Speaker 1: normal day would have been yesterday the game. We go sure, sure, sure,
- 4:45Speaker 1: And so now we're on the way home and we're
- 4:46Speaker 1: about an hour from home. We're about near the Portland
- 4:49Speaker 1: exit Portland, Tennessee, and he is looking at a picture
- 4:55Speaker 1: on his phone. No, I was driving and he's just
- 4:59Speaker 1: scrolling his phone on Facebook and he goes, dude, I
- 5:01Speaker 1: went to school with this guy and I hadn't seen
- 5:03Speaker 1: him in years. And he's evidently married to this woman
- 5:06Speaker 1: and they have a family. But he goes, look how
- 5:07Speaker 1: tall she is? And I thought it was just going
- 5:09Speaker 1: to be like he's a little taller, she's a little
- 5:10Speaker 1: taller than him. He show me the photo. I look over.
- 5:15Speaker 1: This woman is a foot and a half taller than
- 5:17Speaker 1: her husband and they're doing like a nice I think
- 5:20Speaker 1: it was a beach photo, but it was one of
- 5:21Speaker 1: those like is he standing in the sand? Like is
- 5:23Speaker 1: he buried? Like it was wild and I go, Holy moly.
- 5:27Speaker 1: And then I look up and I have Now I'm
- 5:30Speaker 1: off the road, oh and past the rumble strip. And
- 5:34Speaker 1: I go to hear the rumble strip. What it happened.
- 5:36Speaker 1: I go to pull the car. I think that's what
- 5:38Speaker 1: made me look and then I go to pull the
- 5:39Speaker 1: car back over and on the other side of the
- 5:41Speaker 1: rumble strip is a piece of like you know, I
- 5:43Speaker 1: sixty five, it's not great. There's a piece of chewed
- 5:46Speaker 1: up like a huge pothole on the other side of
- 5:48Speaker 1: the rumble strip. I go into the pothole and then
- 5:51Speaker 1: I'm going seventy eighty. Wow. Right away the tire censor
- 5:56Speaker 1: came on. I had a flat. This happened. This is
- 6:00Speaker 1: why I was late for lunch. Were you in the
- 6:02Speaker 1: I was in the Hyundai Ionic, my hybrid. Okay, so
- 6:04Speaker 1: it's a dumb little hatchback is I have a spare tire.
- 6:07Speaker 1: It did, and only because I bought one like a
- 6:09Speaker 1: year ago, because yeah, we have one.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Come with this wait flat tire the day and the
- 6:12Speaker 2: first time is like, oh, there's no spare tire.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Yeah. So luckily I had a little donut and it
- 6:16Speaker 1: was three hundred bucks to buy that donut. You can't
- 6:18Speaker 1: just get a donut no more. And so we had
- 6:22Speaker 1: to stop and change the tire, and it made us
- 6:24Speaker 1: fifteen minutes later than we would have been. But I
- 6:26Speaker 1: mean we changed it more. All the story, kids, don't
- 6:30Speaker 1: look at your phone while you're driving. If somebody says, hey,
- 6:32Speaker 1: look at this, don't look over there. No, don't do it,
- 6:35Speaker 1: even if it's a gigantic woman whose head was blocking
- 6:37Speaker 1: the sun or whatever. But because of her height, but no,
- 6:41Speaker 1: she was a she was a very pretty woman. She
- 6:42Speaker 1: was just maybe it was just that he was short,
- 6:44Speaker 1: but it was a stark contrast.
- 6:47Speaker 2: Yeah, Sadie always is like, I have to the boy
- 6:50Speaker 2: has to be taller, because you know, she's fairly tall.
- 6:53Speaker 1: So she's she's never going to marry a short can.
- 6:55Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 6:55Speaker 2: I'm like, what if he's is a great guy. Yeah,
- 6:59Speaker 2: like you know, it's a what if he has stature
- 7:01Speaker 2: of heart? It's really unfair, you know what I'm saying. Yeah,
- 7:04Speaker 2: I know that there's a lot of beauty standards women
- 7:06Speaker 2: have to look to. And we talked about that last episode,
- 7:07Speaker 2: and you disagreed and said you hope that your wife
- 7:10Speaker 2: and daughter become schlubs just as long as they're ready
- 7:12Speaker 2: five minutes earlier. I stand by whatever twisted version of
- 7:16Speaker 2: what I said.
- 7:17Speaker 1: You just said, But I do think women are held
- 7:18Speaker 1: to like such like an unfair standard. But at that
- 7:23Speaker 1: same time, this is the one in culture where it's like,
- 7:26Speaker 1: literally I think a guy can't control and he's just
- 7:28Speaker 1: like there's so many percentage of women. They're just like, nope,
- 7:30Speaker 1: you're off the list. It's not cool, man, No, man,
- 7:33Speaker 1: it's not cool. And I'll say that as somebody who
- 7:35Speaker 1: is like between six three and six four, like I'm
- 7:37Speaker 1: a tall person.
- 7:38Speaker 2: Maybe that's not why you out.
- 7:40Speaker 1: No, there's all of a sudden, there's so much. The
- 7:42Speaker 1: main reason. The main reason, the main reason is I'm
- 7:45Speaker 1: married for thirty years. I'm not putting myself out there. John.
- 7:48Speaker 1: Back when you were dating buddy. If I wanted to,
- 7:50Speaker 1: I could have no idea. If I no, he probably
- 7:53Speaker 1: would not go, well, I don't I have like a
- 7:55Speaker 1: really big brother energy and not like in the way
- 7:57Speaker 1: that I'm like overseeing you and like, you know, like yeah, yeah,
- 8:02Speaker 1: not that I have like a not like nineteen eighty
- 8:04Speaker 1: four big brother, but more like a you remind me
- 8:06Speaker 1: of my big brother? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Nobody's sliding me
- 8:10Speaker 1: room keys when I'm at these comedy clubs. No, They're
- 8:13Speaker 1: like yeah, they're like, oh my gosh, you remind me
- 8:15Speaker 1: of my dad. And I'm like I'm going to go.
- 8:18Speaker 1: I'm going to go weep in my hotel room. No, man,
- 8:21Speaker 1: it's good. It is good. You know what.
- 8:24Speaker 2: Thank you God for protecting me by not cursing you
- 8:27Speaker 2: with good looks and sex appeal.
- 8:29Speaker 1: Wait, I don't I hateful person. It did hurt a
- 8:34Speaker 1: little bit. I'm sorry, guys. Anyway, So Jordan felt bad
- 8:37Speaker 1: because he felt like he had caused the accident, but
- 8:40Speaker 1: I said, well I looked, but yeah, you did distract WHOA.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Now that's he is not taking responsibility.
- 8:46Speaker 1: He offered to pay for the tire, but I said
- 8:47Speaker 1: I couldn't see damage on the tire. That was the
- 8:49Speaker 1: crazy part. Like we got there and the tire was flat,
- 8:52Speaker 1: but I could not see a hole. I couldn't see
- 8:54Speaker 1: a sidewalter.
- 8:55Speaker 2: Want that Sometimes some of y'all you're feeling flat and
- 8:58Speaker 2: you can't see where the damage is.
- 8:59Speaker 1: But it's you know what I'm saying, you're out of air.
- 9:02Speaker 1: Some of y'all got a hole in your sidewall. I
- 9:04Speaker 1: was about to say, sidewalk you always we all need
- 9:08Speaker 1: to check your valve.
- 9:10Speaker 2: I don't know your valve stem's leaking.
- 9:14Speaker 1: Wait, I don't know. But anyway, so now I got
- 9:17Speaker 1: to go figure that out today. I gotta go sort
- 9:19Speaker 1: out a new tire. He told your wife, what do
- 9:21Speaker 1: you mean? I did? And I left her that car
- 9:23Speaker 1: and took the the other car when I got because
- 9:25Speaker 1: I had to leave right from there and come and
- 9:26Speaker 1: I didn't even tell her. So she's going to find
- 9:28Speaker 1: out for the first time when she listens to the
- 9:29Speaker 1: podcast that I have damaged our car because I was
- 9:33Speaker 1: looking at a tall woman. It's a weird story, but
- 9:38Speaker 1: it happened. When you put it all together like that,
- 9:40Speaker 1: I know, but it's okay because the Lakers got the win.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Lebron had a great game. You got to see Lebron's
- 9:45Speaker 1: that's a bugge because you never know, you go these
- 9:46Speaker 1: older players, they do the load management, they might not play.
- 9:50Speaker 1: So I was like, if we get here and it's
- 9:51Speaker 1: one of those like, well, we're going to beat the
- 9:52Speaker 1: Pacers without these guys, let's just rest them because the
- 9:54Speaker 1: Pacers are trying to tank. And I was like, I'll
- 9:57Speaker 1: be so mad. But they him and Luca. But Luca
- 9:58Speaker 1: had forty three. It was a great game. And I
- 10:02Speaker 1: got to see Jordan one time. Oh yeah, was it
- 10:05Speaker 1: post retirement? He liked the Wizard's Jordan. He no, it was.
- 10:09Speaker 2: It was bulls but number forty two, forty five five?
- 10:12Speaker 1: Sorry, yeah, yeah, dude.
- 10:14Speaker 2: And it was a school trip my junior year, okay,
- 10:17Speaker 2: and they gave us the standing room only.
- 10:21Speaker 1: Oh yeah, you stood up there, and so yeah, watched
- 10:23Speaker 1: the jump boat.
- 10:24Speaker 2: He had been hurt but came in the game. It
- 10:28Speaker 2: was one of the first game he'd come back in
- 10:29Speaker 2: for a while.
- 10:30Speaker 1: Yeah, because that was the one he came back mid season.
- 10:32Speaker 1: It was forty five because by the next year he
- 10:34Speaker 1: was twenty three. Again.
- 10:35Speaker 2: Yeah, oh yeah, that was I mean, I was there
- 10:37Speaker 2: for an iconic.
- 10:38Speaker 1: They didn't go to the they didn't win the championship
- 10:40Speaker 1: that year. Yeah, because they they guys I went and watched,
- 10:43Speaker 1: because you went.
- 10:43Speaker 2: And watched, didn't have that effect on people.
- 10:46Speaker 1: This is why I can't succeee John.
- 10:49Speaker 2: This podcast can't take off.
- 10:51Speaker 1: John's speaking of this podcast. Uh, you know what helped
- 10:54Speaker 1: us keep the lights on here to talk about that? Advertisers,
- 10:58Speaker 1: And we want to give a shout out to the
- 11:00Speaker 1: in and also let's hear a few words from our
- 11:02Speaker 1: fun sponsors. Johnny given shout shout outs to the.
- 11:14Speaker 2: Aad well, shout out right now to go.
- 11:20Speaker 1: Let's go get that little get gos listening right. You
- 11:24Speaker 1: all love soulless corporations. I'm kidding. Nobody's a soulless corporation.
- 11:30Speaker 1: If you sponsor our show, Hey, you know what you're
- 11:33Speaker 1: you get it. You know what I'm saying.
- 11:35Speaker 2: You're doing, Okay, and yeah, we stand by.
- 11:37Speaker 1: The benefit of the doubt is yours. My friends.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Do you have you seen the commercial? I'm sure you
- 11:41Speaker 2: have it as a Super Bowl commercial, but they led
- 11:43Speaker 2: up to it. It's got the guy from Keane Peel
- 11:47Speaker 2: I forget and Michael.
- 11:48Speaker 1: Key Jordan Peele. Yes, the bald one yes, Skinny one Yes, Keegan,
- 11:54Speaker 1: Michael Key and so.
- 11:56Speaker 2: But it's the it's the Halfway There insurance Yeah, yeah
- 11:59Speaker 2: with bon Jovi.
- 12:00Speaker 1: Uh huh.
- 12:01Speaker 2: I can't figure out if that's a funny commercial or not.
- 12:04Speaker 1: Okay, like the guy can't figure it out.
- 12:07Speaker 2: It the guy's the tube coming out playing the talk
- 12:09Speaker 2: box thing.
- 12:10Speaker 1: That's kind of funny. Yeah.
- 12:12Speaker 2: And then they're on like top of a car in
- 12:14Speaker 2: the desert.
- 12:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:16Speaker 2: And then John bon Jovi drives up and all with
- 12:19Speaker 2: Jake from Steak Farm and the girl who's trying to
- 12:21Speaker 2: get better insurance from Halfway There, and.
- 12:22Speaker 1: I get it.
- 12:24Speaker 2: And then they start singing at the end, and bon
- 12:26Speaker 2: Jovi never sings.
- 12:27Speaker 1: He just doesn't really sing anymore. But it's a signature song,
- 12:31Speaker 1: I know. But if you heard him sing it.
- 12:33Speaker 2: Well, you wouldn't have to sing it. Get just mouthed, right, buddy,
- 12:37Speaker 2: bon Jovi can't sing anymore.
- 12:38Speaker 1: Bon Jovi can't sing anymore.
- 12:39Speaker 2: He doesn't tour anymore.
- 12:40Speaker 1: He does. You need to find some videos and you
- 12:45Speaker 1: have your childhood ruined. Oh yeah, it's real sad. Well, well,
- 12:49Speaker 1: the keys are like two keys lower and he's still
- 12:52Speaker 1: not whoa.
- 12:53Speaker 2: Halfway I mean, let's be honest, dude, how do were
- 12:59Speaker 2: they hitting that in the first place?
- 13:00Speaker 1: I know that the why there's a key change, and
- 13:02Speaker 1: if you remember there's a key change, the modulation harmonies
- 13:05Speaker 1: are like only a dog could hear that. Richie Sambora,
- 13:09Speaker 1: the harmony singer, He's got the real work because he
- 13:11Speaker 1: has to hit the hide in harmony above John bon Jovi. Yeah,
- 13:14Speaker 1: that's how I feel on the podcast. Shout out to
- 13:16Speaker 1: Richie Sambora and State Farm.
- 13:18Speaker 2: You're like the lead singer. Thank you, and I have
- 13:20Speaker 2: to hit these octaves above you to make this whole
- 13:22Speaker 2: thing work otherwise, Yes, God knows where you would be
- 13:25Speaker 2: as a solo.
- 13:26Speaker 1: And I'm saying I'm pitchy. I'm saying, can you.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Imagine yourself sitting here just talking by yourself until Michael.
- 13:30Speaker 1: Before we get into your segment. Can I just say,
- 13:32Speaker 1: in addition to like, this is an interesting time in
- 13:35Speaker 1: my what you were whatever you call my comedy career.
- 13:39Speaker 1: I uh, it's a dumb job, but it's cool and
- 13:43Speaker 1: there's some cool things and I get to do the
- 13:45Speaker 1: opry again. Yeah, April first, and so I wanted to
- 13:47Speaker 1: let people know if they wanted to come to that
- 13:50Speaker 1: show that I'm getting to the Opry April first, April
- 13:52Speaker 1: Fool's Day. So I mean it's made for it with Yeah,
- 13:57Speaker 1: a hero of yours. And when I call on, you
- 13:59Speaker 1: were the first person call yeah, because I was like,
- 14:01Speaker 1: John is going to be more excited about this than
- 14:03Speaker 1: I am. Yeah, because our very own CCM legend, Stephen
- 14:08Speaker 1: Kurst Chapman is on the Opry with your boy. Yeah,
- 14:13Speaker 1: so we're going to get to meet I assume presumptively
- 14:16Speaker 1: we're going to get to meet Stephen curshow. It's happening backstage,
- 14:19Speaker 1: and we are going to be insufferable. No, I'll be
- 14:23Speaker 1: you are my I wouldn't even be. I was settling
- 14:29Speaker 1: up my horses.
- 14:30Speaker 2: No, listen, I gotta trail the blaze. Just quoting songs.
- 14:35Speaker 2: It's a childhood thing, but it has continued into adulthood. Sure,
- 14:39Speaker 2: because I think he's.
- 14:40Speaker 1: I'm speechless right now? What are you going to every
- 14:43Speaker 1: everything you try to say to some title? Stephen? You
- 14:46Speaker 1: go out there, I'll be here. You go out there,
- 14:49Speaker 1: and I will be here. Yeah.
- 14:51Speaker 2: No, I think I was telling you at lunch, like
- 14:54Speaker 2: you know you want to be authentic.
- 14:57Speaker 1: Yeah, Like, hey, dude, when I was like seventeen. Yeah,
- 14:59Speaker 1: but don't tr act so cool.
- 15:01Speaker 2: Yeah, like I'm trying to split the line, right, I
- 15:03Speaker 2: don't make him feel weird.
- 15:04Speaker 1: Yeah. My buddy Rick Roberts said that, he goes, my
- 15:07Speaker 1: main regret in my comedy career is I did clubs
- 15:10Speaker 1: for nineteen years or whatever. And he said I didn't
- 15:12Speaker 1: get a photo with everybody I ever worked with because
- 15:15Speaker 1: I was always afraid of whatever. And he goes, and
- 15:17Speaker 1: now like some of those guys have gone on to
- 15:18Speaker 1: be whatever, and I just w wish I had not
- 15:20Speaker 1: tried to be the cool kid.
- 15:21Speaker 2: So you're saying, if Stephen kursch Chapman takes a fun
- 15:23Speaker 2: with me, then someday he can say, yeah, that guy
- 15:26Speaker 2: went on to.
- 15:26Speaker 1: Well, there really was somebody that said something like that.
- 15:28Speaker 1: I think it might have been Jordan Peel, can't remember. No,
- 15:30Speaker 1: it might have been uh who's the guy that was? Uh,
- 15:33Speaker 1: Donald Glover. He said, nobody's ever on their deathbed saying
- 15:36Speaker 1: thank god I wasn't cringe. Thank god I was never cringe.
- 15:40Speaker 1: Like this idea, our main fear in life is being cringey. Oh,
- 15:44Speaker 1: it's like you never accomplish anything with that attitude. No,
- 15:48Speaker 1: you gotta be be excited about sinking. That's really the
- 15:51Speaker 1: definition of cool. If we're honest, that guy's a cool customer.
- 15:54Speaker 1: We mean he's unaffected by life. Who wants to be
- 15:57Speaker 1: around that person? No? Not? I guess he's just it's like, no, dude,
- 16:01Speaker 1: you know what, You're right, it's so excited. Not. It's
- 16:04Speaker 1: easier to tame an excited person than to try to
- 16:07Speaker 1: raise the dead of somebody that's just like God, there's
- 16:09Speaker 1: no way to even like affect this person.
- 16:11Speaker 2: You get ready for this backstage meeting.
- 16:13Speaker 1: I'm kind of said all that, I need you to
- 16:16Speaker 1: be cool. I need you to not ruin. Yeah, no,
- 16:20Speaker 1: it'll be fine.
- 16:21Speaker 2: Well, you know that the there's a there's a backstory, okay,
- 16:25Speaker 2: Stephen Curtis. I wanted to figure out if I ever
- 16:27Speaker 2: tell this to him or not?
- 16:28Speaker 1: Oh right, because you were supposed to just write a book.
- 16:31Speaker 2: So he was looking for a writer for his book
- 16:35Speaker 2: and the collaborator. It's his book, he's writing it, but
- 16:38Speaker 2: you help him and what I do with my dumb career.
- 16:42Speaker 2: And I got the call. I was with our friend
- 16:45Speaker 2: Weston and I was at Cracker Barrel as we used
- 16:49Speaker 2: to go shout out to day and for saying cracker barrel,
- 16:51Speaker 2: cracker barrel, cracker barrel. And I got this call from
- 16:56Speaker 2: an agent, which looks when you say that, it sounds
- 17:00Speaker 2: really pretentious, but I do if I you know, it's
- 17:04Speaker 2: hard to get a hold.
- 17:05Speaker 1: You got it.
- 17:06Speaker 2: And he was like, hey, listen, they're looking at writers
- 17:09Speaker 2: and they're kind of making that last minute sort of
- 17:11Speaker 2: change and shift, and I know.
- 17:12Speaker 1: You know, would you be interested?
- 17:13Speaker 2: I was like, would I be? Not only would I
- 17:16Speaker 2: but yet yes, yes I will. And so I was like,
- 17:18Speaker 2: he's like, you got to send me an updated bio.
- 17:21Speaker 2: So well, I'm in a I'm in a restaurant, give me,
- 17:23Speaker 2: give me a couple of hours here, because I hadn't
- 17:25Speaker 2: had nothing to update your bio. Yeah, there were books
- 17:29Speaker 2: ad and added to my bio stuff and you got
- 17:32Speaker 2: a wax poetic to get this Stephen Curtis job. No,
- 17:34Speaker 2: I think it was just adding more projects. This had
- 17:37Speaker 2: been I'd written a few books. Sinside, How do I
- 17:39Speaker 2: impress Stephen Curtis. I think it took three hours for me,
- 17:45Speaker 2: and by the time I sent it, he already had
- 17:47Speaker 2: a writer.
- 17:48Speaker 1: Oh no, but do you think that that's what did
- 17:50Speaker 1: it or you think they were.
- 17:52Speaker 2: He never even knew I was.
- 17:52Speaker 1: He never even knew I was the guy.
- 17:54Speaker 2: He never knew I was a possibility because I never
- 17:57Speaker 2: I didn't have it ready to send.
- 17:58Speaker 1: And guys, isn't that I wish we'd all been ready?
- 18:01Speaker 2: You know.
- 18:02Speaker 1: I think it's that's not Stephen Carson. That's a Laron Norman.
- 18:05Speaker 1: But I wish I know, But I think it's not.
- 18:08Speaker 1: It's supposed it happened though he's supposed to happen. Oh,
- 18:10Speaker 1: here we go.
- 18:11Speaker 2: You're supposed to people, Huh, here we go.
- 18:14Speaker 1: Listen. What do you mean to say? You blew it
- 18:17Speaker 1: with your dumb bio? I thought more than three You
- 18:21Speaker 1: think you had three hours?
- 18:22Speaker 2: I think I really pour there's.
- 18:23Speaker 1: An opportunity of a lifetime. You want to take three
- 18:25Speaker 1: hours to mull it over and try to come up
- 18:27Speaker 1: with flowery words about yourself? I wasn't you know what?
- 18:31Speaker 1: You didn't deserve the book that he went with.
- 18:34Speaker 2: I think Ken Abraham did it. That's a he's a
- 18:36Speaker 2: pretty accomplished writer, way more accomplished than I. And I
- 18:39Speaker 2: think they were already friends.
- 18:40Speaker 1: They needed a sure thing. You knew Ken and he
- 18:42Speaker 1: you were out texted, you've probably got the clout now
- 18:45Speaker 1: where you probably get in that room a little easier.
- 18:47Speaker 2: But I think I'm going to let him have it, like, hey,
- 18:50Speaker 2: you blew, you messed out, and I think we all
- 18:52Speaker 2: know you bull Ken Abraham swims in my wake or
- 18:55Speaker 2: something like that like.
- 18:56Speaker 1: That, and he's right behind it.
- 18:59Speaker 2: Ken just has got a single tear. I'm not gonna
- 19:03Speaker 2: do any of that. I'll play cool well, I mean neverny.
- 19:05Speaker 2: Maybe he's gonna write a second book, third book, whatever,
- 19:07Speaker 2: and then he's gonna be like, you know what, don't
- 19:08Speaker 2: want to go a different direction.
- 19:09Speaker 1: I want to go about that guy made at the
- 19:11Speaker 1: Opry that was weird and sweated a lot at like
- 19:14Speaker 1: he was. Oh man, I love by the way.
- 19:20Speaker 2: He is touring with the speeches with twenty five years
- 19:23Speaker 2: twenty five years of speeches.
- 19:25Speaker 1: Yeah, very exciting.
- 19:27Speaker 2: Which is a song about not being able to say words.
- 19:31Speaker 2: But I'll deal I'll deal with that with him too,
- 19:34Speaker 2: Thank you man, if you're speechless song at all?
- 19:36Speaker 1: Really, you think he'll do a couple of songs from that.
- 19:38Speaker 1: I think he's at the Opry or he's a member. Well,
- 19:41Speaker 1: I no, yeah, I don't know what he'll do sometimes.
- 19:44Speaker 2: I think he brings like his brother and maybe his
- 19:47Speaker 2: his stepdad out did They did some some cracker barrel bluegrass.
- 19:52Speaker 1: Because he kind of mixes John, he probably makes it
- 19:55Speaker 1: a little more twangy.
- 19:56Speaker 2: He's pop, right, but he puts out to do all
- 19:58Speaker 2: kind of thing. He'll be a little more twangy.
- 20:00Speaker 1: Sure, well I will be too. I'm bringing the twiny
- 20:03Speaker 1: that night. It's so excited just to I mean, that's
- 20:05Speaker 1: gonna be a fun one. Yeah. And I'm a little
- 20:06Speaker 1: more comfortable there now, and so it's a little and
- 20:09Speaker 1: this is when I'll blow it because I've gotten too comfortable. Yeah, yeah,
- 20:12Speaker 1: I need to. I can have your healthy reverence for
- 20:14Speaker 1: the place. But but no, it's just a cool what
- 20:16Speaker 1: a what a wild world did we get there?
- 20:18Speaker 2: But I like to say, you're a great friend that
- 20:21Speaker 2: you thought of me being more excited than you and
- 20:24Speaker 2: your opportunity.
- 20:24Speaker 1: Yeah, you call me first and I appreciate that. And
- 20:27Speaker 1: it's a shame you're not gonna be able to be there.
- 20:29Speaker 1: It's a shame that you have sold outse and no,
- 20:32Speaker 1: they there's some tickets available. John is coming for free
- 20:35Speaker 1: because he's my friend. But you can get tickets at
- 20:38Speaker 1: johnnyw dot com. If you'd like to come to the
- 20:40Speaker 1: Opry in Nashville, if you ever wanted to make a
- 20:42Speaker 1: trip to the Opry. A lot of people make that
- 20:43Speaker 1: little pilgrimage and it's like a big thing. It's a
- 20:45Speaker 1: bucket list thing for them. This would be the time
- 20:47Speaker 1: to do it. Yeah, me and Stephen Curtis on the
- 20:48Speaker 1: same stage, standing in that circle. But you guys got
- 20:50Speaker 1: like a week to figure that out. You got a
- 20:51Speaker 1: week for next next Wednesday. Yeah, it's April first, anyway,
- 20:56Speaker 1: and if not, it'll probably never happen again. Those planets
- 20:58Speaker 1: will never align again.
- 20:59Speaker 2: It's fun, but there's nothing.
- 21:00Speaker 1: John will make it so weird.
- 21:03Speaker 2: But is that Johnny guy?
- 21:04Speaker 1: Yeah, never again. Don't ever put him on the same
- 21:07Speaker 1: stage as me.
- 21:08Speaker 2: This is gonna be great. Yeah, it's gonna be great. Hey, John,
- 21:10Speaker 2: I think it's about that time. It's my segment and
- 21:12Speaker 2: something that we call. They talked about that I'm going
- 21:27Speaker 2: Clive Stables because why not? He is the staple of
- 21:30Speaker 2: the show is I may have said this before too,
- 21:34Speaker 2: but I don't even care.
- 21:35Speaker 1: No, I don't care.
- 21:36Speaker 2: I mean it's still true. So, uh, it's humility after
- 21:40Speaker 2: the first shock is a cheerful a cheerful virtue. It
- 21:45Speaker 2: is the high minded unbeliever desperately trying, in the teeth
- 21:49Speaker 2: of repeated disillusions to retain his quote faith in human nature.
- 21:53Speaker 2: Who is really sad, high minded unbeliever desperately trying in
- 21:58Speaker 2: the teeth of repeated disl usions to retain his faith
- 22:01Speaker 2: in human nature.
- 22:02Speaker 1: That that's what's said.
- 22:05Speaker 2: But humility, and he's talking in a faith context, obviously,
- 22:11Speaker 2: it is actually something cheerful. I don't know if I've
- 22:16Speaker 2: ever been more humbled than I have in the last
- 22:19Speaker 2: i'd say eight years. In two thousand and seventeen, my
- 22:24Speaker 2: dad died in May, and then after that our church
- 22:31Speaker 2: got sued by our denomination as they were. There was
- 22:36Speaker 2: a dispute, and I don't say those things lightly, but
- 22:42Speaker 2: it ended up going our way, and it was not
- 22:45Speaker 2: It was not a good thing. And there's been forgiveness
- 22:48Speaker 2: and all those things, but it's a public record thing.
- 22:51Speaker 2: But dude, for a year of my life, I mean,
- 22:52Speaker 2: it was just like I was writing briefs. We didn't
- 22:55Speaker 2: really have any money. We were just trying to survive
- 22:58Speaker 2: and save this, you know place. We even debated just
- 23:02Speaker 2: letting the place go. But we felt like that for
- 23:04Speaker 2: the people who had built it and other things and
- 23:06Speaker 2: the people we served, that was the right thing to do.
- 23:09Speaker 2: And I think post that there were a few years
- 23:15Speaker 2: that were, you know, not as hard twenty nineteen it
- 23:19Speaker 2: was like an enchanted year in some ways with him
- 23:21Speaker 2: in twenty twenty hit for all of us, like a
- 23:23Speaker 2: ton of brigs and being a dad of a teenager.
- 23:31Speaker 2: It's just there's just been like humbling experiences over and
- 23:35Speaker 2: over and over again. And I tell the church sometimes
- 23:37Speaker 2: like humility sounds great, but when you're being humble, it
- 23:41Speaker 2: feels like humiliation.
- 23:43Speaker 1: It really is.
- 23:43Speaker 2: It's like it's just constant, Oh my gosh, this hurts.
- 23:49Speaker 2: And I think I get what he's saying that you
- 23:53Speaker 2: can't get to humility without it being a shock. But
- 23:57Speaker 2: there's something, there's something that dies that it's not like
- 24:02Speaker 2: you just had always hoped it would go away or whatever.
- 24:04Speaker 2: Like once it dies, it hurts, but also it's dead.
- 24:08Speaker 2: Like there's a lot of self confidence in other things
- 24:11Speaker 2: of the wrong persuasion that I think, yeah, has been slowly,
- 24:16Speaker 2: painfully mortified in my life, just put to death.
- 24:21Speaker 1: And.
- 24:24Speaker 2: That I'd look at it and I think hearing these
- 24:27Speaker 2: things as a younger person, you're like, oh, I can't
- 24:30Speaker 2: wait to see how God forms me in my life,
- 24:32Speaker 2: and you know I'm gonna be. And if you look
- 24:36Speaker 2: at it as we approach Easter, like the path of
- 24:39Speaker 2: following Jesus always leads to a cross. It always leads
- 24:42Speaker 2: to death and then to resurrection. Right, But you don't
- 24:46Speaker 2: just skip to resurrection without going through the cross. I
- 24:50Speaker 2: wish you could on the flesh side, right. I wish
- 24:54Speaker 2: you could just learn it by reading it. And there
- 24:57Speaker 2: are a lot of things maybe that you can. But man,
- 25:02Speaker 2: accepting that right takes humility, and it takes being willing
- 25:08Speaker 2: to not There been times me it's so I'm mad
- 25:10Speaker 2: at God or I don't understand I think I understand
- 25:12Speaker 2: God less, although I think I know God more, but
- 25:14Speaker 2: I think I understand him less. And the times I'm
- 25:18Speaker 2: like more willing to tell them how frustrated I am.
- 25:21Speaker 2: You know what, In times I just find myself there's
- 25:23Speaker 2: a prayer they're doing indelectial right now that it was
- 25:25Speaker 2: found on like a second century cave in Egypt from
- 25:28Speaker 2: early believers, and it's just you know, Lord Jesus, son
- 25:32Speaker 2: of God, have mercy on me. Just written three times.
- 25:35Speaker 2: That's my main prayer.
- 25:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 25:37Speaker 2: Now it's just constantly like, oh man, I was thinking
- 25:40Speaker 2: about how I screwed things up in my life yesterday.
- 25:42Speaker 2: You know, this morning, I'm like, God, just have mercy
- 25:44Speaker 2: on me, you know. And it's it sucks, like it's hard,
- 25:47Speaker 2: it's not. You don't feel this great confidence, but you
- 25:52Speaker 2: also know you're probably praying the purest prayer from scriptures.
- 25:56Speaker 1: A lot of David's prayers and the psalms were just like, yeah,
- 25:59Speaker 1: just what in the war, Like, yeah, why why me?
- 26:03Speaker 1: Be with me? Why me?
- 26:04Speaker 2: How long? Right?
- 26:05Speaker 1: How short? Questions?
- 26:06Speaker 2: Lord, have mercy.
- 26:07Speaker 1: Yeah. There's a concept that I think about in comedy
- 26:10Speaker 1: a lot. It's not I think about it in relation
- 26:13Speaker 1: to comedy, but I don't think the context of it.
- 26:15Speaker 1: When somebody told me this was about comedy, but they said,
- 26:18Speaker 1: and I think about it all the time, and I've
- 26:19Speaker 1: told so many comics this. You're either humble or you're
- 26:22Speaker 1: on your way to being humbled. Yeah, And I mean
- 26:25Speaker 1: you're in one of those two spaces. Yeah, And so
- 26:29Speaker 1: the Bible talks about humble yourself. I know the humble
- 26:33Speaker 1: will be exalted the people who exalt themselves will be
- 26:35Speaker 1: a base. And so like you try to always like
- 26:38Speaker 1: I'm gonna humble myself when I go into a room
- 26:41Speaker 1: and not act like I'm the best thing since lies bread,
- 26:43Speaker 1: and so like, if you do that, remember where you
- 26:46Speaker 1: came from. A lot of that, but some of that's
- 26:48Speaker 1: just like life is humbling. Life is being sanded down. Yeah,
- 26:52Speaker 1: and you hope, you hope you're being shaped into something
- 26:54Speaker 1: that's useful. But it hurts to be sanded down sometimes
- 26:58Speaker 1: by life and by even by God. If you feel
- 27:00Speaker 1: like God's doing the sanding, it still hurts it to process.
- 27:03Speaker 2: Yeah, so it does, And I think it causes you
- 27:08Speaker 2: to decide. To his point, when you're disillusioned, do you
- 27:12Speaker 2: try to keep coming back to this Pollyanne, Everything's going
- 27:16Speaker 2: to work out and the people are inherently good, or
- 27:20Speaker 2: do you accept how dark the world is? Accept it
- 27:25Speaker 2: not because you understand it or because you want it
- 27:28Speaker 2: to be that way, or that you're not trying to
- 27:30Speaker 2: bring light, but that you go, I'm not in control.
- 27:33Speaker 2: That's really what's about. When you begin to get to say,
- 27:36Speaker 2: and I still struggle with this so much, like I
- 27:39Speaker 2: feel responsible to positively affect outcomes. I think that God
- 27:44Speaker 2: put us here to do that. But man, the line
- 27:47Speaker 2: between effort and control.
- 27:50Speaker 1: Yeah, like and not being able to control every outcome,
- 27:53Speaker 1: just having to be able to be like, I can
- 27:55Speaker 1: control this thing, I can do this one good thing,
- 27:57Speaker 1: do the next right thing. You can just do the
- 27:59Speaker 1: next thing when we're being inundated with so much negative
- 28:03Speaker 1: and you see so much chaos in the world and
- 28:05Speaker 1: we know we can't affect all of it. But giving
- 28:08Speaker 1: us the courage to do the next right thing that
- 28:10Speaker 1: we can do, Yeah, that's the hard part. And some
- 28:12Speaker 1: people just don't do it. They go, well, I'll never
- 28:14Speaker 1: It's like having the big to do list and you're
- 28:15Speaker 1: so over one with a list, you just go take
- 28:17Speaker 1: a nap. That's how a lot of people live their lives.
- 28:19Speaker 1: They don't do the next right thing on the list.
- 28:21Speaker 1: So I'm trying to be the person's doing the next
- 28:23Speaker 1: raight thing on list. But yeah, it's definitely it's hard.
- 28:25Speaker 1: Life is humbly.
- 28:26Speaker 2: Yeah, it is no live tables. C. S.
- 28:30Speaker 1: Lewis, He's going places. That guy is gonna be somebody. John.
- 28:34Speaker 1: Let's do my single. Let's start with some old jokes.
- 28:36Speaker 1: We call it joke about that, John, I said to
- 28:44Speaker 1: my son, this is clearly a joke because I don't
- 28:45Speaker 1: have a son. I said to my son, I need
- 28:47Speaker 1: a battery so I can tell the time. He asked,
- 28:49Speaker 1: is it four o'clock? I said? I answered, I don't know.
- 28:51Speaker 1: That's why I need the battery, Tony, is it four?
- 28:56Speaker 1: Is it four o'clock? A red blood cell, John and
- 29:01Speaker 1: a white blood cell fell in love alas it was
- 29:05Speaker 1: all in vain. That one's closer to it. So yeah,
- 29:09Speaker 1: that's getting John. Finally, with help of her fertilities. That's hard.
- 29:14Speaker 1: With help of fertila is that's not like a tom
- 29:16Speaker 1: broke on it Fertility Shocking News Ada. With help of
- 29:22Speaker 1: a fertility specialist, John, a sixty five year old woman
- 29:25Speaker 1: has a baby. All of her relatives come to visit
- 29:28Speaker 1: meet the newest member of their family. When they asked
- 29:32Speaker 1: to see the baby, the new mom says, not yet,
- 29:34Speaker 1: a little later, they asked to see the baby again.
- 29:35Speaker 1: Once more, she says not yet. Finally, ask when the
- 29:38Speaker 1: heck can we see the baby? The mother says, when
- 29:40Speaker 1: the baby cries? Why do we have to wait till
- 29:42Speaker 1: the baby cries? Mom says, I forgot where I put it.
- 29:47Speaker 1: She's sixty five. John, memory loss. We've had a couple
- 29:51Speaker 1: of memory loss jokes in a row on the show.
- 29:54Speaker 1: What do you think the algorithms trying to say something?
- 29:56Speaker 1: I think we're headed to that age and we're gonna
- 29:59Speaker 1: maybe that's our is our fan base? Do you think
- 30:00Speaker 1: our fan base skews older? We don't really do we
- 30:02Speaker 1: have data on our podcast fans. We need more data.
- 30:06Speaker 2: Hey, all I know is that data I need. Doesn't
- 30:08Speaker 2: know if they're good people. They are good people, and
- 30:11Speaker 2: so are advertisers. John, let's know what I can do
- 30:13Speaker 2: more ads. Hey, let me just say this.
- 30:15Speaker 1: We we do appreciate you listening. And if you wanted
- 30:20Speaker 1: to send us a note. We got a great note
- 30:21Speaker 1: from somebody. Uh. We weren't going to like summarize it.
- 30:25Speaker 1: It's a lot of personal things in the note, but
- 30:27Speaker 1: we just want to say thank you to that person.
- 30:28Speaker 1: What was their name? Standing by John's got it pulled
- 30:31Speaker 1: up on his email. John wasn't ready. We don't have
- 30:34Speaker 1: I didn't know he was. We don't know.
- 30:34Speaker 2: We don't have a producer, we don't have per se
- 30:38Speaker 2: per se.
- 30:40Speaker 1: Uh it is I got it right here?
- 30:42Speaker 2: Sarah, Yeah, Yeah, thank you Sarah so much. It was
- 30:45Speaker 2: so kind and what an amazing thank you for sharing
- 30:48Speaker 2: the things you shared. It just it would really really
- 30:51Speaker 2: meant a lot to us.
- 30:51Speaker 1: The fact that the show impacts you means a lot
- 30:53Speaker 1: to us. And thank you for listening. And even if
- 30:55Speaker 1: the show you just listened for fun, it doesn't impact
- 30:57Speaker 1: you the way it did Sarah. Right, we still uh
- 31:00Speaker 1: she means more to us.
- 31:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm not gonna like her more than you.
- 31:04Speaker 1: Yeah. Now, but that's not the point. I mean, it's
- 31:08Speaker 1: not not the point. Yeah, the point, Like Sarah, we
- 31:11Speaker 1: need you to write a just a letter that just
- 31:14Speaker 1: gushes and says, yeah, we need to feel better about ourselves. Weird.
- 31:18Speaker 1: We need you to How would you do that? John?
- 31:19Speaker 2: Remember the whole humility thing?
- 31:20Speaker 1: Yeah, get that. Where would you send such a letter? John?
- 31:23Speaker 2: You go to Hello, talk about that podcast dot com?
- 31:26Speaker 1: Fire off an email to that address, and uh also
- 31:29Speaker 1: go to talk about that podcast dot com. If you
- 31:31Speaker 1: want to listen to the other four hundred two episodes
- 31:34Speaker 1: of the show spring break, John, that what a better
- 31:37Speaker 1: way to spend your spring break than uh, hang it
- 31:40Speaker 1: out on a beach somewhere just listening to episodes and ah, yeah,
- 31:44Speaker 1: the the dulcet tones of whatever we got going on. John,
- 31:49Speaker 1: let's do my last segment of the day. Uh, it's
- 31:52Speaker 1: this week in history. We call it talk about then.
- 31:57Speaker 1: I don't know, but John, this week eighteen twelve, the
- 32:02Speaker 1: term jerry mander is first used. I think it's pretty
- 32:06Speaker 1: apropos with modern politics as it were in the past
- 32:10Speaker 1: twenty thirty years. But I didn't know this. Do you
- 32:12Speaker 1: know where jerry mandering comes from? I did not. It's
- 32:15Speaker 1: the process of dividing let's give a full knowledge is
- 32:18Speaker 1: but I'm saying it's the process of dividing electoral districts
- 32:22Speaker 1: with the aim of aiding the party in power. Massachusetts
- 32:25Speaker 1: Governor Elbridge Eldridge Elbridge or a Elbridge of an Eldridge,
- 32:31Speaker 1: but his name is Elbridge, Elbridge Jerry. He was a
- 32:34Speaker 1: future US Vice president evidently, which I didn't know that.
- 32:36Speaker 1: You know we had a vice president Jerry. Evidently, Massachusetts
- 32:40Speaker 1: Governor Elbridge Jerry. He signed into new law electoral district
- 32:44Speaker 1: boundaries that were designed to enhance the incumbent party's election results,
- 32:48Speaker 1: leading to some oddly shaped legislative districts. So the Boston
- 32:53Speaker 1: Gazette newspaper published an article, and I could show the
- 32:55Speaker 1: article photo and a political cartoon of showing the district,
- 32:59Speaker 1: and it looks like a little salamander with a tail
- 33:02Speaker 1: above the district. That's how oddly shaped it was. So
- 33:05Speaker 1: it's a Jerry salamander. It's a Jerry mander. Oh they
- 33:09Speaker 1: named it a jerrymander because it did it look like
- 33:11Speaker 1: a little lizard, because they're using just the outline. Wow,
- 33:14Speaker 1: you know, he's skating around these little like we know
- 33:17Speaker 1: we have the votes here, so we're going to call
- 33:19Speaker 1: that our district. Yeah, and it's basically cheating, but legalized cheating.
- 33:24Speaker 2: Right, it is legal as long as well they are
- 33:27Speaker 2: working right now, they're taking out parts of the Civil
- 33:30Speaker 2: Rights Act of nineteen sixty five and the Voting Rights
- 33:32Speaker 2: Act as well. But the idea used to be and
- 33:37Speaker 2: it still is, I think, as long as you don't
- 33:40Speaker 2: do it on a basis of race or discrimination. So
- 33:44Speaker 2: so technically the legislators do have the right to draw
- 33:48Speaker 2: their voting districts, but then they have to prove it
- 33:51Speaker 2: to not be racially motivated, and that also could depend yeah,
- 33:56Speaker 2: a lot of things, but so yeah, it's yeah, the
- 33:59Speaker 2: thing about Jerry that happening now. That's so interested to me. Sorry,
- 34:02Speaker 2: I know you're in your history. Thing is that other
- 34:06Speaker 2: states are are doing it in retaliation, right, So Texas
- 34:12Speaker 2: redrew a bunch of things to make sure the Republicans
- 34:14Speaker 2: and California's like, fine, we'll redraw to make sure the
- 34:16Speaker 2: Democrats win. It's like it's so far balanced itself out
- 34:20Speaker 2: by it quite frankly, because it is the legislator's job
- 34:23Speaker 2: to draw it.
- 34:24Speaker 1: But it should it should be being like, we're so
- 34:25Speaker 1: sure that we have the best policies that will win
- 34:28Speaker 1: if we just have a fair vote. It's like, how
- 34:29Speaker 1: do we stage this to where we can't lose. It's like,
- 34:32Speaker 1: I just don't I don't love that energy. Yeah, I
- 34:34Speaker 1: don't love it, and I don't know all of the Again,
- 34:37Speaker 1: I don't know everything there's to know about it. I'm
- 34:39Speaker 1: not saying that both sides don't don't have ne'er do
- 34:41Speaker 1: wells out there. That's definitely true. There are a lot
- 34:44Speaker 1: of people that you are willing to lie. I just
- 34:46Speaker 1: get an advantage in an edge, you know, the not
- 34:50Speaker 1: not being disenfranchised.
- 34:51Speaker 2: It's one of the basic rights of being a citizen
- 34:53Speaker 2: of this country, is what makes us not not losing
- 34:56Speaker 2: your rights for your voice to be heard in the
- 34:58Speaker 2: voting process. Yes, this really bothers me, and I wish
- 35:03Speaker 2: sometimes without them becoming active as courts. The courts are
- 35:06Speaker 2: not supposed to be. They're not They're supposed to wait
- 35:09Speaker 2: for the issue to come to them and to handle
- 35:11Speaker 2: it right blindly. It's not it's supposed to be an
- 35:13Speaker 2: issue with the losses, so they find ways around it.
- 35:15Speaker 2: But you do wish that the courts would interpret in
- 35:17Speaker 2: a way that this would not be or that the
- 35:19Speaker 2: Congress wouldass something to say that they can't jerry mander anymore,
- 35:22Speaker 2: that there has to be a more equitable way of
- 35:25Speaker 2: making sure everyone's voice is heard.
- 35:27Speaker 1: You know what needs to happen is you need to run, guys.
- 35:30Speaker 1: John is ready to announce his candidacy for school board presidents.
- 35:34Speaker 2: See the problem is is I would want to jump
- 35:36Speaker 2: into something. Yeah, and I'm not qualified because I don't
- 35:39Speaker 2: want to be in the school board first.
- 35:41Speaker 1: Oh okay, well never mind, Oh maybe I will. We'll see. Okay, Well,
- 35:45Speaker 1: well he didn't say no, guys, I didn't say no.
- 35:48Speaker 1: Send those cards and letters? Do you guys talk about that? Podcast? John?
- 35:53Speaker 1: This week? Eighteen seventy two, the fire extinguisher was invented,
- 35:57Speaker 1: the first practical I want to see what the first
- 35:59Speaker 1: impact extinguisher was like, such a big hose. Yeah, a
- 36:02Speaker 1: dude with a hog a balloon with water in it
- 36:05Speaker 1: as well. He's like, well, we're out. The first practical
- 36:09Speaker 1: fire extinguisher is patented by African American inventor Thomas J. Martin.
- 36:14Speaker 1: It provided a way to quickly attach a pump to
- 36:16Speaker 1: a body of water for the purposes of extinguishing fires,
- 36:19Speaker 1: washing buildings, and sprinkling streets. So he really made he
- 36:24Speaker 1: just made a pump. I guess of sorts. It was
- 36:27Speaker 1: a way to attach a pump, it says, to a
- 36:29Speaker 1: body of water. So you had to be near a
- 36:31Speaker 1: body of water. What uses eighteen seventy two?
- 36:35Speaker 2: They hadn't pumped water out of a body of water.
- 36:38Speaker 1: He was a way to attach a pump. I don't
- 36:39Speaker 1: know what he was doing. Was he was I don't
- 36:42Speaker 1: have the draw in Johnny any more from Thomas J. Martin.
- 36:46Speaker 1: Oh that's great, it's pretty cool. John Harry Coover was born.
- 36:52Speaker 1: Oh wait, Harry Coover died. I'm sorry, this is a
- 36:54Speaker 1: died that he died this week in twenty eleven. Born
- 36:58Speaker 1: nineteen seventeen. So quite a long line. Yeah, ninety plus
- 37:01Speaker 1: years Harry Coover invented superglue. Huh he was an American
- 37:07Speaker 1: chemist inventor of superglue. Okay, I'm gonna get this wrong.
- 37:10Speaker 1: Here's a cyan. Cyanac relate was discovered in nineteen forty
- 37:15Speaker 1: two while searching for materials to make spe glasses and
- 37:18Speaker 1: cockpit covers for military planes. It was too sticky for
- 37:22Speaker 1: this purpose and was set aside. In nineteen fifty one,
- 37:24Speaker 1: Coouver and his team at Eastman Kodak Interesting began investigating
- 37:29Speaker 1: cyanac relates again for jet canopies, and once again it
- 37:33Speaker 1: proved too sticky. When a chemist in the group accidentally
- 37:37Speaker 1: ruined an expensive refractometer by gluing it together, Cooper realized
- 37:42Speaker 1: he had discovered a unique adhesive. In nineteen fifty eight,
- 37:45Speaker 1: the adhesive was marketed by Kodak as Eastman nine ten,
- 37:49Speaker 1: which is and later as superglue. Eastman nine ten just
- 37:53Speaker 1: feels like it's going to cost cancer Eastman nine ten
- 37:58Speaker 1: in your house, look out.
- 38:00Speaker 2: They were hoping it caught on like Kleenex or something. Yeah,
- 38:02Speaker 2: they did not, but yeah, Harry coop Man, that's quite
- 38:04Speaker 2: a legacy.
- 38:05Speaker 1: And it's interesting, like a lot of these inventions that
- 38:07Speaker 1: we cover on the show, they start out as a
- 38:10Speaker 1: whole other thing, or they get set aside, well, this
- 38:13Speaker 1: was a failure, and then you go, no, you didn't
- 38:14Speaker 1: fail at making a sticky whatever. You the stickiness is
- 38:18Speaker 1: what's going to make you your money.
- 38:20Speaker 2: Yeah, but it took him eight years. Yeah, like after
- 38:22Speaker 2: it was just sitting there.
- 38:23Speaker 1: It took him eight year nineteen fifty one or nineteen
- 38:25Speaker 1: fifty eight, Yes, so seven years it was set aside.
- 38:27Speaker 2: Like you knew how sticky it was. You kept setting
- 38:29Speaker 2: a sign was too sticky. No one thought what if
- 38:31Speaker 2: we missed. Well in nineteen forty two was when it
- 38:33Speaker 2: was originally right. Yeah, so set aside, so that it's
- 38:36Speaker 2: like sixteen years. Wow, guys, if you have something right now.
- 38:40Speaker 1: That's really sticky, and you've set it aside, and you
- 38:42Speaker 1: may have sixteen years from now, sixteen years from you
- 38:45Speaker 1: may really have something. Also, do your dishes, you know,
- 38:51Speaker 1: come on, man, don't be one of those people. It's
- 38:53Speaker 1: like I let them soak. Come on, man, my wife
- 38:56Speaker 1: made a ragou uh. Yeah, we had to let that pot.
- 39:00Speaker 1: So what do you mean she made a ragou? She
- 39:02Speaker 1: made a I think of ragou is like a sauce.
- 39:05Speaker 2: So you're thinking of ragu, the spaghetti sauce right right, Like, No,
- 39:09Speaker 2: this ragu is totally different.
- 39:11Speaker 1: It's a pasta. It goes over pasta. She made a sauce.
- 39:15Speaker 2: It's no, it's almost like piles of meat tomatoes. Like
- 39:20Speaker 2: it's a true ragou, Dude, It's one of the best
- 39:23Speaker 2: things I've ever had in my life.
- 39:24Speaker 1: True ragou, true ragou. That's any of our sauce.
- 39:28Speaker 2: Okay, I like sixteen years from now, it's that stuff
- 39:34Speaker 2: she made, superl she makes. She doesn't make it often
- 39:36Speaker 2: than when she does every time she goes. Last time
- 39:38Speaker 2: I made this, you said, why do would I have
- 39:39Speaker 2: this more often? It's so good and.
- 39:41Speaker 1: Maybe it's really hard to make. I forget about it.
- 39:42Speaker 1: I want to put herself through for you. It was
- 39:46Speaker 1: easy in the kitchen all day.
- 39:48Speaker 2: I do the dishes man, which is back to the
- 39:51Speaker 2: pots to you let him a lot of rag So
- 39:55Speaker 2: rag This is what my grandma always said.
- 40:00Speaker 1: That's the song Stephen Curtis is going to do on
- 40:01Speaker 1: the Oprey, Gotta let a raggoopot soak. It's very in
- 40:05Speaker 1: love it. He plays a dough bro John. This week,
- 40:10Speaker 1: eighteen fourteen, Joseph Ignace Guillatin died. You want to take
- 40:14Speaker 1: a guess what He was the inventor of French physician. Yeah,
- 40:18Speaker 1: inventor of the guillotine. His campaign for the use of
- 40:21Speaker 1: a machine to provide humane executions led to the invention
- 40:25Speaker 1: of the thing because because they were a lot of
- 40:26Speaker 1: like torturous methods of there are a lot of executions happening.
- 40:29Speaker 1: It's French revolution, I guess, right. So it's just like
- 40:31Speaker 1: a lot of people just being like off with his head,
- 40:34Speaker 1: but they would you know right now, it's like we
- 40:36Speaker 1: got to figure out a humane way to kill all
- 40:38Speaker 1: these revolutionaries, and so this physicians like I got away,
- 40:42Speaker 1: We'll drop his blade on their head and the guy's like,
- 40:44Speaker 1: you're a hero? Are you a hero? I know, I'm
- 40:46Speaker 1: a doctor. Yeah, And then the guy's like, I'll make
- 40:48Speaker 1: a basket to catch the head in another hero anyway.
- 40:53Speaker 1: He the first execution by guillotine was performed in seventeen
- 40:57Speaker 1: ninety two, so he was born in seventeen thirty eight,
- 41:01Speaker 1: so yeah, it was seventeen thirty seventy nine, So he was, Yeah,
- 41:05Speaker 1: I wonder when he didn't say when he invented it.
- 41:07Speaker 1: But interesting, what a weird thing to be Like, I'm
- 41:11Speaker 1: a physician, I'm passionate about humane execution.
- 41:14Speaker 2: Right, No, I want to name this after myself.
- 41:17Speaker 1: I wonder if that's how it happened or if he
- 41:19Speaker 1: it just became that.
- 41:20Speaker 2: Even then they'd be like, guys, maybe we shouldn't. Can
- 41:23Speaker 2: we call Although guillotine's better than whatever he had, chop
- 41:26Speaker 2: a matic you're trying to come up with it?
- 41:30Speaker 1: Just he was. That was the original slap chop. Remember
- 41:34Speaker 1: the slap chop, the thing that you were on TV
- 41:36Speaker 1: and it making veggies. Yes, it was the original slap chop,
- 41:39Speaker 1: the slap shop, but not great. It's licens it. Diess
- 41:44Speaker 1: John born this week nineteen forty eight British. British entrepreneur
- 41:48Speaker 1: Jimmy Hezeldon h In twenty ten he bought the Segue
- 41:56Speaker 1: Company Segway Inc. Maker of the Segway Personal transport system.
- 42:01Speaker 1: And he makes the list because he died later that
- 42:03Speaker 1: year after backing off a cliff while riding an off
- 42:05Speaker 1: road version of the Segue. So it's one of those
- 42:08Speaker 1: ironic now he wasn't the inventor of the segway like
- 42:10Speaker 1: many people say, like this is kind of one of
- 42:12Speaker 1: those things in Lord, like the inventor of the segway
- 42:14Speaker 1: died by segue. He was a guy that bought the company.
- 42:17Speaker 1: And then a year later he was tooling around on
- 42:19Speaker 1: a segway on his property in England and he backed
- 42:23Speaker 1: off a cliff and to his demise. Kind of a bummer. Finally, John,
- 42:29Speaker 1: this week nineteen seventy nine, Three Mile Island, you know
- 42:32Speaker 1: about three What do you know about three Mile Island?
- 42:34Speaker 2: Just a horrible nuclear accident.
- 42:36Speaker 1: Nuclear Reactor number two at three Mile Island this week
- 42:40Speaker 1: nineteen seventy nine generating station has a partial meltdown. This
- 42:44Speaker 1: resulted in the release of radioactive gases in radioactive I
- 42:47Speaker 1: had done into the environment. The accident was due to
- 42:50Speaker 1: a largely do largely to operator error, inadequate training, and
- 42:54Speaker 1: design flaws. This is why it makes the list because
- 42:57Speaker 1: life kind of imitated art. The movie The China Syndrome
- 43:00Speaker 1: had premiered just twelve days earlier, and it told the
- 43:03Speaker 1: fictional story of TV reporters who uncovered major safety violations
- 43:06Speaker 1: and filmed a nuclear accident at a power plant. The
- 43:09Speaker 1: nuclear power industry derided the film, claiming it was absurd
- 43:13Speaker 1: and nothing like that could ever happen, So they said
- 43:15Speaker 1: it was this alarmist and then twelve days later yeah. Yeah,
- 43:18Speaker 1: but US President Jimmy Carter, who had specialized in nuclear
- 43:21Speaker 1: power while serving in the United States Navy, toured the
- 43:23Speaker 1: damaged reactor after the event, so he was kind of
- 43:26Speaker 1: trying to demistified and calm everyb down he tours the damage.
- 43:30Speaker 1: I think there was some story about Jimmy Carter going
- 43:32Speaker 1: into a reactor and like stopping a core melt down
- 43:35Speaker 1: when he was in the Navy. Wow. That Curry found
- 43:37Speaker 1: the other day and she was like, have you guys
- 43:38Speaker 1: ever talked about this? And I was like, I don't
- 43:39Speaker 1: think so. That's wild. Wow. He went down and like
- 43:42Speaker 1: had to like push that he had like ninety seconds
- 43:44Speaker 1: to fix the thing before it. Wow, and he stopped
- 43:46Speaker 1: a core melt down. And when he was in the Navy.
- 43:48Speaker 2: We could write a movie about that. Yeah, although if
- 43:50Speaker 2: he only had twelve seconds.
- 43:52Speaker 1: Yeah, that's true, that's suit whatever, how many every time
- 43:54Speaker 1: you I don't remember it was twelve seconds, but he
- 43:56Speaker 1: Jimmy Carter. Anyway, that's it for today and this weekend.
- 44:00Speaker 1: Istrant's very educational, do you think so learn? We try
- 44:04Speaker 1: to give a little people like something to chew on,
- 44:06Speaker 1: something that they go, I didn't know that, yeah, and
- 44:08Speaker 1: something to think about, something to laugh at. We just
- 44:11Speaker 1: want to brighten your day. It's got everything. That's everything.
- 44:14Speaker 1: It's like a nice ragout. And let me say, if
- 44:18Speaker 1: you've learned nothing else today, one is uh like, take
- 44:21Speaker 1: it easy on yourself, be humble, but also get a
- 44:24Speaker 1: spare tire. Check your trunk. Make sure you got a
- 44:27Speaker 1: spare yeah, because you never know somebody's going to show
- 44:30Speaker 1: you a wild photo. And listen. I don't know where
- 44:33Speaker 1: you live, but our roads have a lot of potholes.
- 44:35Speaker 1: Oh yeah, they sneak up on you. Yeah, and I
- 44:38Speaker 1: found one. If you're listening to the UK, you can
- 44:40Speaker 1: put that tire in your what your boot? That's correct,
- 44:43Speaker 1: put around your bot and tire would be t y R.
- 44:45Speaker 1: Oh really yeah tires? Yeah pretty sure.
- 44:49Speaker 2: Wow, that's there's no way to know t yr.
- 44:51Speaker 1: So put that tire in your boot. Put that tire
- 44:54Speaker 1: your boot. That's another Stephen kursch Chapman song that he's gonna.
- 45:01Speaker 2: Well, hey guys, you should check out again Johnny's tour
- 45:03Speaker 2: dates right now at j O, N, N I e
- 45:05Speaker 2: W dot com. He's all over the country and he
- 45:07Speaker 2: wants you to come.
- 45:08Speaker 1: John's writing books too, but he can't talk about it.
- 45:10Speaker 1: He's under all these NDA's. But he's got some projects,
- 45:13Speaker 1: something pretty busy things you can spend your hard earned
- 45:16Speaker 1: dollars on very soon. It might be a while. Oh,
- 45:20Speaker 1: save up, that's save up for those books.
- 45:23Speaker 2: Yeah, and uh. You can also check out past episodes
- 45:27Speaker 2: to talk about that podcast dot com again. This is
- 45:29Speaker 2: four oh one. It's a new Hey, we're in a
- 45:31Speaker 2: new century of episodes now.
- 45:32Speaker 1: I don't think that's so. Isn't it one hundred three
- 45:36Speaker 1: hundred years? Though?
- 45:37Speaker 2: Is it the I think you can have a century
- 45:39Speaker 2: mark without hitting a year.
