- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello, my name's Santasha Nabananga Bamblet. I'm a proud or
- 0:04Speaker 1: the Order Kerni Whaltbury and a waddery woman. And before
- 0:08Speaker 1: we get started on She's on the Money podcast, I
- 0:11Speaker 1: would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land
- 0:14Speaker 1: of which this podcast is recorded on a wondery country,
- 0:18Speaker 1: acknowledging the elders, the ancestors and the next generation coming through.
- 0:23Speaker 1: As this podcast is about connecting, empowering, knowledge sharing and
- 0:27Speaker 1: the storytelling of you to make a difference for today
- 0:30Speaker 1: and lasting impact for tomorrow.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Let's get into it.
- 0:34Speaker 3: She's on the Money, She's on the Money.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Hello, and welcome to She's on the Money the podcast.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Let's you get a bit of insight about other people's
- 1:03Speaker 2: money habits, obviously for educational purposes. Welcome back to another
- 1:07Speaker 2: one of our money diaries where I get the absolute
- 1:10Speaker 2: pleasure of sitting down and having a chat with one
- 1:12Speaker 2: of our beautiful She's on the Money community members and
- 1:14Speaker 2: talking all about their money story. Let's jump straight into it,
- 1:17Speaker 2: because this week I got a message and it sounded
- 1:20Speaker 2: exactly like this, Dear She's on the Money. When I
- 1:23Speaker 2: moved from Brazil, to Australia seven years ago. I had
- 1:26Speaker 2: just one thousand dollars to my name. So to save money,
- 1:29Speaker 2: I did some more unconventional things, like spending two years
- 1:33Speaker 2: living on a sailing boat plus a year commuting on
- 1:36Speaker 2: an electric bike. Last year, I launched my side huzzle,
- 1:39Speaker 2: focused on empowering women to embrace their curly hair. Now
- 1:43Speaker 2: I've paid off my car and I'm on track to
- 1:46Speaker 2: buy my first property. Money doarist. That's so exciting. Welcome
- 1:51Speaker 2: to the show.
- 1:52Speaker 4: Thank you. I'm so excited to be here.
- 1:55Speaker 2: I'm so excited as well, because like I've just jumped
- 1:58Speaker 2: on this curly hair journey band again and it's actually crazy,
- 2:02Speaker 2: Like I didn't realize there was an entire community about
- 2:06Speaker 2: women who had curly hair and how to deal with it.
- 2:08Speaker 2: I just thought for the longest time, I just looked
- 2:11Speaker 2: like Hagrid, Like I just figured I had the same
- 2:14Speaker 2: hair as Hagrid, and I just knew that the way
- 2:17Speaker 2: that I had to deal with my hair was to
- 2:19Speaker 2: like blow you right straight before I could do anything,
- 2:21Speaker 2: and that was my bread and butter. And then after
- 2:24Speaker 2: having a baby, obviously side note or money diaries, but
- 2:27Speaker 2: after having a baby, I'm like the amount of times
- 2:29Speaker 2: I got out of the shower and didn't have time
- 2:31Speaker 2: to dry my hair or do anything and it just
- 2:32Speaker 2: started curling. And I'm like, is there something to this?
- 2:35Speaker 2: Turns out there is.
- 2:37Speaker 4: Yeah, So welcome to this journey of being a curly
- 2:43Speaker 4: hair girl. And I promise you you one regret. I
- 2:48Speaker 4: wearing my natural hair since I was eighteen, and you know,
- 2:53Speaker 4: back in the day, we didn't have so much like
- 2:55Speaker 4: YouTube channels and knowledge about it and even like hairdress
- 3:00Speaker 4: as specialized in curly hair. So I just want to
- 3:03Speaker 4: tell you enjoyed the journey, because worth it and I'm
- 3:07Speaker 4: just so passionate about it.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Oh, I can tell and I can't wait to get
- 3:10Speaker 2: into it. But before we get there, money Durist, if
- 3:13Speaker 2: I asked you to give your money habits a grade
- 3:15Speaker 2: from A three to F, what grade would you give them?
- 3:18Speaker 4: I think I'm sitting ad be.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Minus a seep minus. I love that. I want to
- 3:22Speaker 2: know more about you, though. Can you tell me a
- 3:24Speaker 2: little bit more about your international money story.
- 3:27Speaker 4: Yeah. So basically, I'm the grown child of a brick
- 3:32Speaker 4: layer and I stay at home mom from Brazil and
- 3:36Speaker 4: they had eleven children.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Eleven kids. My goodness all times.
- 3:43Speaker 4: And so my dad didn't grow up around a lot
- 3:47Speaker 4: of money. Everything was really scars and I think that,
- 3:53Speaker 4: you know, came to generations to me because my dad
- 3:58Speaker 4: always he would reply, Dad, can I go to the movies?
- 4:01Speaker 4: Or can I go to someone's house? Or can I
- 4:03Speaker 4: do this or that? And always there a default, and
- 4:07Speaker 4: so I was there's no money, there's no money. So
- 4:10Speaker 4: I grew up hearing that, and I think didn't help me.
- 4:16Speaker 4: You know, like after I decided to move to Australia,
- 4:19Speaker 4: I used to panic myself about there's no money, there's
- 4:23Speaker 4: no money, but no, there is. There is is just
- 4:26Speaker 4: a question of me budgeting, you know, organizing myself and
- 4:30Speaker 4: work hard so I can you know, leave comfortably and
- 4:35Speaker 4: feel more comfortable about money and talking about money because
- 4:40Speaker 4: at home we didn't talk about it. It's just a
- 4:42Speaker 4: question of no, there's no money, we don't talk about it.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Yeah, no, that's fair, And I feel like that would
- 4:48Speaker 2: be really common if you know, your dad was one
- 4:51Speaker 2: of eleven and you didn't have heaps and then it
- 4:53Speaker 2: just filters down and down, right, So what did that
- 4:56Speaker 2: look like as you started to get a little bit older.
- 4:59Speaker 4: I went to a private school, but with scholarship, which
- 5:03Speaker 4: I think made me create good connections and learn different
- 5:08Speaker 4: things from like going to a different type of school
- 5:12Speaker 4: back home. And also my parents were really focusing on education.
- 5:18Speaker 4: We didn't have holidays. I just went overseas when I
- 5:22Speaker 4: was like twenty one. This year was the first year
- 5:26Speaker 4: that they traveled overseas. So they always put so much
- 5:31Speaker 4: effort into education, and I think what changed for me
- 5:36Speaker 4: was that I went to learn English from I think
- 5:40Speaker 4: ten years old, and that was something that really opened
- 5:44Speaker 4: my mind to you know, in the future, now the
- 5:47Speaker 4: track ten years later, considering moved to Australia and build
- 5:50Speaker 4: a life here.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Yeah, that's actually really cool. Was that something that you
- 5:54Speaker 2: were really purposeful about going, Oh, English is going to
- 5:57Speaker 2: open my opportunities or was it just a cool other
- 5:59Speaker 2: language you go to learn, or like what was the
- 6:01Speaker 2: segue of that.
- 6:03Speaker 4: I always liked a new language, and I think in
- 6:06Speaker 4: my mind was like, there's only a small amount of
- 6:10Speaker 4: people that speaks Portuguese, and so the knowledge in Portuguese
- 6:15Speaker 4: is very would say limitated. If I learned a lot
- 6:18Speaker 4: another language, English or Spanish, you know, that opens up
- 6:23Speaker 4: a whole new universe of information. Knowledge, and I was
- 6:29Speaker 4: always very curious about you know, the other site.
- 6:33Speaker 2: I love that, but like that's such an intelligent way
- 6:36Speaker 2: of looking at it, like I hadn't thought about. I
- 6:39Speaker 2: guess language in that way, that language could be limiting
- 6:42Speaker 2: because it only has so many you know, translations of
- 6:45Speaker 2: things or accent like that is very interesting.
- 6:48Speaker 4: Oh and I think you know the amount of information
- 6:51Speaker 4: that you lost on translation. That's also you know, like
- 6:55Speaker 4: you lose so much. So I don't know it was
- 6:59Speaker 4: I think for me to always you know, looking for
- 7:03Speaker 4: something in English and be curious about it, I really
- 7:07Speaker 4: enjoyed knowing the meaning of words. So learning a new
- 7:11Speaker 4: language it has been always exciting for me. That's why
- 7:14Speaker 4: I was like, yeah, let's you know, learn English and
- 7:18Speaker 4: learn Spanish and expand my knowledge a little bit broader.
- 7:22Speaker 2: Yeah, that is very cool. So you learn English on
- 7:25Speaker 2: the horizon one day was maybe an international move. What
- 7:29Speaker 2: happened next?
- 7:30Speaker 4: I went to the university. I did journalists back home,
- 7:34Speaker 4: and I knew that if I want to work in
- 7:37Speaker 4: somewhere in a bigger company, I need to learn English,
- 7:40Speaker 4: not as the basic, but I will need to learn
- 7:44Speaker 4: like vocabulary, structure and everything. So I graduate you need.
- 7:50Speaker 4: Twelve years ago and I had a friend that he
- 7:53Speaker 4: was DTV reporter for ESPN and he was like, Okay,
- 7:58Speaker 4: you graduated, Now are you gonna do. I was like, work,
- 8:02Speaker 4: you know, I really want to work full time because
- 8:05Speaker 4: I just finished UNI. I want to have, you know,
- 8:08Speaker 4: a good wage and a good living. And he was like, oh,
- 8:12Speaker 4: I think you will love Australia. So if it's something
- 8:15Speaker 4: that you know, you want to go for a bigger job,
- 8:18Speaker 4: like a multinational company, I think it's something that you
- 8:22Speaker 4: should pursue. And Gold Coast is really similar to I
- 8:27Speaker 4: was living at Floridaanapolis. It's a small island in the
- 8:31Speaker 4: south of Brazil. He was like, it's really similar to here.
- 8:35Speaker 4: The weather is similar, the vibe. I think you're gonna
- 8:38Speaker 4: love it. And I was like, oh okay, and then
- 8:43Speaker 4: I made it happen.
- 8:45Speaker 2: You made it happen. I love that. Was He right?
- 8:47Speaker 2: Is the vibe similar to the Gold Coast.
- 8:49Speaker 4: One hundred percent?
- 8:51Speaker 2: Oh really?
- 8:52Speaker 4: Yeah. The weather is the same, the serf vibe, the
- 8:56Speaker 4: holiday vibe. Because Florida Anopolis there's no heavy industry there,
- 9:01Speaker 4: like no manufacturing industry there, so it's really similar to
- 9:06Speaker 4: the Gold cost in terms of tourism and services industry,
- 9:09Speaker 4: and the vibe is just the same.
- 9:11Speaker 2: I love it here, but is really cool. I love
- 9:14Speaker 2: that because it could have been so disappointing if you
- 9:17Speaker 2: got here and you're like, what is this? This is
- 9:19Speaker 2: nothing like Brazil. So you moved here, you only had
- 9:23Speaker 2: one thousand dollars to your name, how did you survive?
- 9:27Speaker 2: Because one thousand dollars and no job and being in
- 9:31Speaker 2: a new country is a little bit scary.
- 9:35Speaker 4: It is. And I only had that money because I
- 9:39Speaker 4: had a friend that she was working as a cabin
- 9:42Speaker 4: crew for an international company and she gave me the
- 9:47Speaker 4: staff ticket, so I basically paid nothing. But the ticket
- 9:51Speaker 4: was only to Sydney, so it was from some outlook
- 9:54Speaker 4: to Sydney and then from Sydney I got a buzz.
- 9:57Speaker 4: It was sixteen hours on a bus on the Greyhound
- 10:01Speaker 4: Buzz from Sydney to Brisbane. At the time, because when
- 10:07Speaker 4: I was nineteen, I met an ossie guy.
- 10:11Speaker 2: Oh here we go.
- 10:13Speaker 4: In some poulo and we become really good friends, but
- 10:18Speaker 4: we disconnected. We dated for a while, but then we
- 10:21Speaker 4: disconnected for probably eight years. And then when I had
- 10:26Speaker 4: all my visa documentation, good to go. I sent him
- 10:29Speaker 4: an email asking if he could proof read it because
- 10:33Speaker 4: he was the only person that I knew that would
- 10:35Speaker 4: speak English as first language, and I was like, can
- 10:38Speaker 4: you just read my letter off intention? And then we
- 10:41Speaker 4: reconnected on that. Ah.
- 10:43Speaker 2: Was that a little bit strategic as well, because I
- 10:45Speaker 2: think that could have worked, like, oh, hey, like, can
- 10:49Speaker 2: you prove read this? I happen to becoming me you Yeah,
- 10:54Speaker 2: she's a smart cookie.
- 10:56Speaker 4: It was funny because he mentioned that the most expensive
- 11:00Speaker 4: been in Australia is rent. Yes, so if I need
- 11:05Speaker 4: to stay on the boat with him, I could because
- 11:08Speaker 4: he grew up on a sailing boat in his entire life.
- 11:12Speaker 4: And I was like, ah, okay, I only have a
- 11:15Speaker 4: thousand dollars, so I don't have money to pay a
- 11:18Speaker 4: bond or anything, so let's give that a go.
- 11:21Speaker 2: So you just moved internationally to come live with this
- 11:24Speaker 2: guy that you hadn't spoken to for eight years on
- 11:27Speaker 2: a boat exactly. I'm obsessed what happened.
- 11:30Speaker 4: Oh we lived together for like two years, two years
- 11:33Speaker 4: and a half.
- 11:34Speaker 2: Is this like a romantic relationship or were you it's
- 11:37Speaker 2: not housemates when it's a boat, maybe boat mates?
- 11:40Speaker 4: I think for the first two weeks we were boat mate. Yeah,
- 11:43Speaker 4: and then we felt industrating to it because we were
- 11:46Speaker 4: living together. We knew each other for like ten years,
- 11:51Speaker 4: you know, we Yeah, we had a good connection and yeah,
- 11:55Speaker 4: so it was two years and a half and I
- 12:00Speaker 4: expected that we would be singingling way more than we did.
- 12:04Speaker 4: And I think part of it was, you know, I
- 12:07Speaker 4: just arrived in a new country. I need to find job,
- 12:09Speaker 4: I need to study it, I need to make connections.
- 12:13Speaker 4: And it's really hard to go sailing to find the
- 12:16Speaker 4: perfect window when you need to have the perfect wind,
- 12:19Speaker 4: you need to have the perfect current, needs to match
- 12:22Speaker 4: my schedule, needs to match his schedule. So we didn't
- 12:26Speaker 4: sail as much as I thought. So I was like, oh, yeah,
- 12:30Speaker 4: I live on my sailing both for two years and
- 12:32Speaker 4: a half. Yeah, but I didn't sail that much.
- 12:36Speaker 2: That's kind of fun though, like you just lived on
- 12:38Speaker 2: a boat.
- 12:39Speaker 4: Yeah, and you know, like learn to be very savvy
- 12:42Speaker 4: about my space and the things that I would I
- 12:45Speaker 4: didn't buy much because you know, one, I didn't have
- 12:49Speaker 4: the money too, I didn't have the space for it.
- 12:52Speaker 4: My wardrobe was so small, I think it was a
- 12:56Speaker 4: middle I had like three or four pairs of shoes.
- 13:00Speaker 4: That was it and I made it happen and it
- 13:03Speaker 4: was fun. I want to go back living on a
- 13:06Speaker 4: boat at some point in my life. My ben the
- 13:09Speaker 4: feature with more structure and time, for sure.
- 13:14Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure. So what happened two and a half
- 13:17Speaker 2: years on a boat?
- 13:18Speaker 4: Now?
- 13:18Speaker 2: Where are you now?
- 13:19Speaker 4: I'm living on a Go Coast. I live in our unit,
- 13:23Speaker 4: and I work for Big Aussy retail brand and I'm
- 13:29Speaker 4: responsible for the organic traffic. And last year, no, two
- 13:34Speaker 4: years ago, I launched my own brand about super products
- 13:40Speaker 4: to help me with my curly hair.
- 13:43Speaker 2: That's very cool. I love it. So what happened to
- 13:45Speaker 2: our boat romance? Is he still on the boat now
- 13:48Speaker 2: you're in an apartment? Tell me more.
- 13:51Speaker 4: Yeah, he's still on the boat. And I tried to
- 13:55Speaker 4: convince him to move to the Go Coast. He didn't want,
- 14:00Speaker 4: and I was like, we don't need even to pack anything.
- 14:02Speaker 4: We just need to pull the anchor up and move
- 14:05Speaker 4: to the Go Coast, you know, like.
- 14:07Speaker 2: Like we can actually move there right now exactly.
- 14:10Speaker 4: You know, let's check the tide, let's check the wind,
- 14:13Speaker 4: and off we go. But he didn't want. And at
- 14:16Speaker 4: the time I was commuting from the Go Coast to
- 14:19Speaker 4: Brisbane three days a week on the train. It was
- 14:23Speaker 4: so exhausting and I was like, I'm going to go
- 14:25Speaker 4: to move on the Go coast because I need that,
- 14:29Speaker 4: and he didn't want and that's why we broke up.
- 14:32Speaker 2: Yep, catch up.
- 14:33Speaker 4: He still has the boat and I even pitched to
- 14:37Speaker 4: buy it from him. I was like, I can buy
- 14:41Speaker 4: it from you, but I was like, oh, it's too
- 14:43Speaker 4: much work for me to manage a full time job.
- 14:45Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a lot of work.
- 14:47Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, it's too much. Yeah.
- 14:49Speaker 2: Absolutely. So I want to know more about you. You said,
- 14:52Speaker 2: I work for a big, aussy retail brand. So what
- 14:55Speaker 2: is your job titled? And how much money do you win?
- 14:58Speaker 4: I'm a search agent optimization specialist, which means that I'm
- 15:03Speaker 4: responsible to help the company to be on page one
- 15:07Speaker 4: of Google and I own ninety K is.
- 15:10Speaker 2: That including or excluding Super?
- 15:12Speaker 4: Excluding? So I have that plus super?
- 15:15Speaker 2: Oh how cool. That's a good job.
- 15:17Speaker 4: Yeah, And that was something that after listening to the podcast,
- 15:21Speaker 4: I was like, I need to be aware of these
- 15:23Speaker 4: that are want of my salary plus Super. I don't
- 15:26Speaker 4: want it to be included on it.
- 15:28Speaker 2: Yes, I love that. I was having a job interview
- 15:31Speaker 2: the other day, or I was interviewing someone the other
- 15:33Speaker 2: day and I, you know, got onto salary and I
- 15:37Speaker 2: was saying, what would you like the role to pay?
- 15:40Speaker 2: You know, it sits between here and here? And they
- 15:43Speaker 2: said a number and I said, is that including or
- 15:45Speaker 2: excluding Super? And the La Victoria? If you've taught me anything,
- 15:49Speaker 2: it's excluding Super? Is plus Super? And I was like, yes, queen, exactly, exactly, Yeah, yeah,
- 15:56Speaker 2: it was the best. I loved it. I was like,
- 15:58Speaker 2: you have learnt. Well, well tell me a bit more.
- 16:01Speaker 2: Now you've moved to Australia obviously, you've you know, put
- 16:05Speaker 2: down a few more routes, moved off the boat. What
- 16:08Speaker 2: are your big money goals now? What are you currently
- 16:10Speaker 2: working towards.
- 16:11Speaker 4: I really want to buy a property this year. I'm
- 16:15Speaker 4: aiming for September October. I want to buy a small unit,
- 16:22Speaker 4: but I don't want to be renting anymore. That's what
- 16:25Speaker 4: I decided kind of two years ago. I got a
- 16:30Speaker 4: little bit sidetracked with my goals. But now you know,
- 16:34Speaker 4: twenty twenty five, new year, new me. I'm all in
- 16:38Speaker 4: for that and I'm on track.
- 16:40Speaker 2: Oh that's so exciting. What does that mean if you
- 16:43Speaker 2: saved are you planning on accessing any grants or schemes
- 16:47Speaker 2: or like, what's the plan around buying a small unit
- 16:49Speaker 2: this year?
- 16:50Speaker 4: Saving for a deposit. I'm doing some extra gigs, some
- 16:54Speaker 4: extra jobs like consultancy and also trans leading text from
- 17:01Speaker 4: English to Portuguese. Oh cool for another company. Yeah, you know,
- 17:05Speaker 4: it's a good side hushole. I can do anytime. I
- 17:09Speaker 4: have kind of two weeks to complete the job, so
- 17:12Speaker 4: after work or on the weekends, I can do that
- 17:15Speaker 4: and they paying me thirty two dollars an hour.
- 17:18Speaker 2: Hey, that's cool. That's cool. Nice money on the side,
- 17:22Speaker 2: especially flexible, Like you know, there's lots of flexible side
- 17:25Speaker 2: hustles going around, but not many of them. Can you
- 17:28Speaker 2: do them on the couch while you're watching maths? So
- 17:31Speaker 2: that's pretty exciting exactly.
- 17:33Speaker 4: And it's all on my life quite easily because I'm
- 17:38Speaker 4: on Air's lack group where they post some jobs and
- 17:42Speaker 4: they needed someone with that it speaks a native Brazil
- 17:45Speaker 4: and Portuguese, and I was like, oh, I can do that.
- 17:49Speaker 4: Why not and pay me? Is okay?
- 17:52Speaker 2: So yeah, that's really cool. I love that. Let's go
- 17:55Speaker 2: to a really quick break because on the flip side,
- 17:57Speaker 2: I want to talk more about this property journey. I
- 17:59Speaker 2: want to talk about him. I want to talk about debt,
- 18:01Speaker 2: and then your best and worst money habits, because I
- 18:03Speaker 2: have a sneaky suspicion you've got some pretty good money
- 18:05Speaker 2: habits because you had to be so strict with yourself
- 18:07Speaker 2: living on a boat, so guys don't go anywhere money Diarist.
- 18:15Speaker 2: We are back, and this is such a fun conversation,
- 18:18Speaker 2: Like I just love how you were, Like, ah, my
- 18:22Speaker 2: friend said that the Gold Coast is a little bit
- 18:24Speaker 2: like where I'm currently from, and therefore I'll love it.
- 18:27Speaker 2: I'm just going to move overseas, Like not only am
- 18:30Speaker 2: I going to move overseas, I'm going to do it,
- 18:31Speaker 2: and I don't have heaps of money, don't have a plan,
- 18:34Speaker 2: Like you didn't come and check it out first. You
- 18:36Speaker 2: just got on a plane, came over and I guess
- 18:38Speaker 2: I live here now, So tell me where did you
- 18:41Speaker 2: get the confidence for that? Because I feel like even
- 18:45Speaker 2: I going on an interstate trip on my own, I'm like, oh,
- 18:48Speaker 2: I don't know if I like this, Like I'm going
- 18:50Speaker 2: to Sydney by myself, but you're just jumping countries at
- 18:54Speaker 2: this point, So tell me what drove that, like, how
- 18:58Speaker 2: did you know that was going to work out?
- 19:00Speaker 4: Well, I didn't know, but I hate missing an opportunity.
- 19:04Speaker 4: I hate that. And I was like, Okay, I have
- 19:09Speaker 4: a job. I had a cool job back home. I
- 19:12Speaker 4: was doing marketing and pr for a big beer brand.
- 19:18Speaker 4: But I was not earning enough and I didn't have
- 19:21Speaker 4: a boyfriend. I didn't have kids. My parents are you know,
- 19:25Speaker 4: they're really healthy. And I was like, if I don't
- 19:28Speaker 4: do it in now, I won't do it if I
- 19:31Speaker 4: find someone, and things will become really hard. I was like,
- 19:35Speaker 4: now it's the time. If I don't do it now,
- 19:37Speaker 4: I want to do it later. I will get too comfortable.
- 19:40Speaker 4: I'm cancer. I like home.
- 19:42Speaker 2: I'm a cancer as well. That's why I'm like, I'm
- 19:44Speaker 2: a Cancerrian Like, there's no way I would do that.
- 19:47Speaker 2: I love my home, like I like my creature comforts.
- 19:50Speaker 2: I like to know and be in control of what's
- 19:52Speaker 2: going on. And that's just so far out of control.
- 19:55Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah it is.
- 19:57Speaker 2: But you did it and it worked.
- 19:58Speaker 4: Yeah, work out well. And I told my mom that
- 20:01Speaker 4: I would come back after six months. I knew dip
- 20:05Speaker 4: down that I wouldn't.
- 20:06Speaker 2: But that made you feel better. I like it. And
- 20:09Speaker 2: how many years has it been now?
- 20:10Speaker 4: Sventain?
- 20:13Speaker 2: Sorry, Mom, Yeah, wolves talk to me about investing. I
- 20:19Speaker 2: know that you listen to the Shees on the Money podcast.
- 20:22Speaker 2: Are you investing? Is there a plan? What does that
- 20:24Speaker 2: look like in your life?
- 20:26Speaker 4: So I have my superannuation. I learned that, and I
- 20:31Speaker 4: have an account A shows this and I'm getting a
- 20:35Speaker 4: percentage of the money that I spend in shopping and
- 20:40Speaker 4: that goes automatically to it.
- 20:42Speaker 2: Oh cool, you've got roundups.
- 20:44Speaker 4: Yes, that one. And I really like that feature because
- 20:47Speaker 4: I don't need to think about it.
- 20:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I just switched it on. And I know that
- 20:52Speaker 2: you know, that's a privilege to be able to do that,
- 20:54Speaker 2: But I just turned it on because I was like,
- 20:57Speaker 2: I'm consistently investing, But like all the little things, they
- 21:00Speaker 2: also add up. And I mean, if I'm gonna have
- 21:02Speaker 2: a little coffee as a treat, I think that my
- 21:05Speaker 2: investment should benefit as well.
- 21:07Speaker 4: There I go. Yeah. And also I think if I
- 21:12Speaker 4: go to the end of the week when I receive
- 21:14Speaker 4: my payment and then I transfer I don't know, one
- 21:18Speaker 4: hundred dollars feels really heavy. Yeah, and if I just
- 21:22Speaker 4: have five dollars years five dollars there. It doesn't like
- 21:25Speaker 4: add up in a good way, not as heavy on me.
- 21:29Speaker 2: It kind of is like controlled money leaking, like when
- 21:32Speaker 2: you're not in control of your budget, right you like
- 21:35Speaker 2: look back on the month that was and you're like,
- 21:37Speaker 2: my gosh, like my money just disappeared, and then you
- 21:40Speaker 2: realize it was on like a coffee here or there,
- 21:42Speaker 2: or you might have like picked up like a snack
- 21:45Speaker 2: for five dollars, because like sometimes you just look at
- 21:46Speaker 2: your bank account and you're like, oh, five dollars won't hurt,
- 21:49Speaker 2: that's fine. I will have a croissant, like and you
- 21:51Speaker 2: just don't think about these things and like that's fine.
- 21:54Speaker 2: But by the end of the month you're like, I
- 21:55Speaker 2: don't know where my money's gone. But you're kind of
- 21:58Speaker 2: doing that with investments, so you don't notice. And then
- 22:01Speaker 2: all of a sudden you look and you're like, oh,
- 22:03Speaker 2: my money's gone. That's fine, Like that makes sense. But
- 22:06Speaker 2: your investment is over there laughing because it's doing so well.
- 22:09Speaker 4: And then when I look at my wallet at the
- 22:12Speaker 4: investment app and it's like, oh there, I no, I
- 22:15Speaker 4: didn't know that I had that much money.
- 22:18Speaker 2: I love that for you, So tell me about debt.
- 22:21Speaker 2: Have you ever been in debt? Have you got debt
- 22:24Speaker 2: at the moment? How do you feel about it?
- 22:26Speaker 4: Six months ago, I paid off my car. It was
- 22:30Speaker 4: my first car that I paid with my money.
- 22:33Speaker 2: And I ah good.
- 22:34Speaker 4: Every time that I open it, I'm feel so proud
- 22:38Speaker 4: and so happy to have that car. And currently I
- 22:43Speaker 4: just sign up for a payment plan for egg freezing procedure,
- 22:48Speaker 4: so I'm in debt for that.
- 22:51Speaker 2: For egg freezing? Was that?
- 22:53Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 22:53Speaker 2: Yeah cool?
- 22:55Speaker 4: I needed to do that because I'm turning twenty five
- 22:58Speaker 4: this year, so I needed to do it now. And
- 23:01Speaker 4: that's why I got into this payment plan. Not it
- 23:05Speaker 4: was really really happy about it, but it was the
- 23:08Speaker 4: way that I needed to do to make this thing happen.
- 23:11Speaker 2: Yeah, no, that's really cool. I think it's so important
- 23:14Speaker 2: to talk more about this as well. I feel like,
- 23:16Speaker 2: you know, birth rates in general are going down because
- 23:19Speaker 2: women are doing more like you've got an epic career
- 23:22Speaker 2: and you've got this epic life. Like Unfortunately, we can't
- 23:25Speaker 2: do everything all at once. So can you tell me
- 23:28Speaker 2: a little bit more about this egg freezing procedure. Obviously
- 23:32Speaker 2: you've you know, sought debt for it, which is great,
- 23:34Speaker 2: And I love that you've been able to access that
- 23:36Speaker 2: because otherwise, like I mean, you just didn't have the
- 23:38Speaker 2: money right and it just wouldn't have happened. And I
- 23:41Speaker 2: think that that's a very valid reason for getting into debt.
- 23:45Speaker 2: Like it's funny because a lot of people assume that
- 23:48Speaker 2: I'm just against debt in general, like I just go
- 23:50Speaker 2: absolutely not. I would never, But I just don't want
- 23:53Speaker 2: debt to be something that you got into and then
- 23:56Speaker 2: you have nothing to show for it, Like you go
- 23:58Speaker 2: on a holiday and then you come home from the
- 24:00Speaker 2: whole You had a good time, but you've got nothing
- 24:02Speaker 2: to show for it, Like this procedure that you're going
- 24:05Speaker 2: through obviously setting you up for future success. So can
- 24:09Speaker 2: I be pervy and ask about how much that cost?
- 24:12Speaker 2: Like what are the costs associated with getting your eggs frozen?
- 24:15Speaker 4: It will be around twelve thousand, and I'm hoping to
- 24:21Speaker 4: get around five thousand back from Medicare because last year
- 24:27Speaker 4: I was diagnosed with endometriosis level three. Oh my gosh,
- 24:32Speaker 4: And I will be honest with you, that took me
- 24:35Speaker 4: at all financially but also mentally. I was so fatigued
- 24:40Speaker 4: and in so much pain, so last year, I had
- 24:43Speaker 4: this laparoscopy to get the diagnosed and to remove the
- 24:48Speaker 4: extra tissues. And because now my fertility is compromised because
- 24:52Speaker 4: of the endometriosis, it will recommend me to do the
- 24:56Speaker 4: egg freezing and going on dating. And you are thirty
- 25:00Speaker 4: four or thirty five, you know, dey clock sticking, And
- 25:04Speaker 4: I was feeling so anxious about going on dates that
- 25:08Speaker 4: I was like, I would do this for myself to
- 25:10Speaker 4: preserve my fertility, but also to go on dates really
- 25:14Speaker 4: looking forward to meet people and get to know people
- 25:17Speaker 4: and not having like a list of yeah, does he
- 25:20Speaker 4: take this, is he going to be this?
- 25:22Speaker 2: Yeah, you're not just looking for the father of a child.
- 25:24Speaker 2: You're actually looking for a life partner and that can
- 25:26Speaker 2: come later.
- 25:27Speaker 4: Exactly exactly because in the last I would say two years,
- 25:31Speaker 4: I was not having fun going on the date because
- 25:34Speaker 4: I was just like looking for those characteristics and that
- 25:38Speaker 4: was not helping me and creating a lot of anxiety
- 25:42Speaker 4: about it. So I was like, Okay, there's the endometrialsis
- 25:46Speaker 4: there's the age. Let's just do it for you know,
- 25:50Speaker 4: my mental health too. Yeah.
- 25:52Speaker 2: I love that. That's so valid, But also I'm so
- 25:55Speaker 2: grateful that you're talking about it, because how many times,
- 25:58Speaker 2: like at the start of this freezing journey, did you go, well,
- 26:02Speaker 2: what's that going to cost? Or what's that look like?
- 26:03Speaker 2: Or where to even go?
- 26:04Speaker 4: What do I do?
- 26:05Speaker 2: Like, we just need to be having these conversations more
- 26:07Speaker 2: often because we're all in a very similar situation. I
- 26:11Speaker 2: feel like not everybody, like I'm not in the siture
- 26:14Speaker 2: i've had kids, but like I'm in my thirties. I
- 26:17Speaker 2: didn't have kids until I was in my thirties, and
- 26:19Speaker 2: like that seems to be the norm now, and the
- 26:22Speaker 2: fact that I had to choose in my twenties between
- 26:26Speaker 2: my career and my kids, like that pressure is enormous.
- 26:29Speaker 2: I love the fact that you were able to freeze
- 26:31Speaker 2: your eggs and now you're going to be able to
- 26:33Speaker 2: enjoy dating and finding somebody that you actually want to
- 26:36Speaker 2: share your life with, as opposed to would he make
- 26:39Speaker 2: a good dad? What's this look like? How does that work?
- 26:42Speaker 4: Yeah? And create so much anxiety. I just want to
- 26:44Speaker 4: go on a date and enjoy getting to know someone
- 26:48Speaker 4: and spend time. Let's go bowling, let's go for a walk,
- 26:51Speaker 4: Let's do different stuff and get to know each other
- 26:54Speaker 4: instead of me being so concentrated at their end result.
- 26:59Speaker 4: So yeah, it was something that I didn't want to
- 27:02Speaker 4: get into d but there was not all the way around,
- 27:08Speaker 4: and I'm glad that I was able to find a
- 27:10Speaker 4: way to do it.
- 27:11Speaker 2: That's freeing. I love that. So tell me, are you
- 27:14Speaker 2: dating yet? Like, what are we doing?
- 27:17Speaker 4: No, at the moment, my parents are here.
- 27:21Speaker 2: No, we're not going on dates with mom and daddy
- 27:23Speaker 2: here now, No, thank you.
- 27:26Speaker 4: But I have been just feeling way more excited about
- 27:30Speaker 4: meeting people in general, like being around like minded people
- 27:36Speaker 4: and doing you know, like I'm going to try rock climbing,
- 27:40Speaker 4: I'm going to dance class, I'm trying different activities to
- 27:44Speaker 4: get to know people and going to events and putting
- 27:48Speaker 4: myself out there a little bit more because I don't
- 27:50Speaker 4: want to go back on the apps, so let's leave
- 27:53Speaker 4: life a little bit.
- 27:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I feel like the apps are a bit well.
- 27:56Speaker 2: I mean, I met my husband on Tinder, so like,
- 27:58Speaker 2: I'm all about the app, but from the experience of
- 28:02Speaker 2: all the single people in my life, like it feels
- 28:04Speaker 2: like the dregs of the internet.
- 28:06Speaker 4: Yeah, and I think it changed, Like I had friends
- 28:09Speaker 4: that made their partners there, but I think maybe in
- 28:12Speaker 4: the last three years or since the pandemic, the app
- 28:15Speaker 4: dynamic changed a little bit.
- 28:17Speaker 2: That's so sad because it used to be really fun
- 28:20Speaker 2: and it made it easy. I hope it comes back
- 28:23Speaker 2: around like and things go a little bit more wholesome soon.
- 28:26Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it's crossed.
- 28:28Speaker 2: Talk to me about your best money habit. What do
- 28:30Speaker 2: you think that is?
- 28:31Speaker 4: I think because I work with marketing, I'm really savvy
- 28:36Speaker 4: on you know, promotions or like ways to get a discount.
- 28:41Speaker 4: An example, I knew that Dizzier would be back at
- 28:44Speaker 4: the gym and I need a new outfit because it
- 28:46Speaker 4: was like, I don't want to go with trash clothes
- 28:50Speaker 4: to the gym. I want to wear something nice and
- 28:52Speaker 4: feel good about coming back. And I got sixty hundred
- 28:57Speaker 4: dollars worth of GM GEA for two hundred dollars.
- 29:02Speaker 2: What hell.
- 29:04Speaker 4: Well, it was not easy, but I checked all the
- 29:07Speaker 4: process before I went to the store to check my
- 29:10Speaker 4: sizing because I hate returns. So I was like, if
- 29:13Speaker 4: I want to get it, I will get it right.
- 29:15Speaker 4: And so I added everything to the cart, I put
- 29:19Speaker 4: my email there, I waited for the discount code and
- 29:23Speaker 4: there was some extra ways to get some extra discount
- 29:26Speaker 4: because I got it through between Black Friday and Boxing Day,
- 29:31Speaker 4: so after Boxing Day they added I think twenty percent
- 29:34Speaker 4: discount extra on top of what discounted it was already.
- 29:39Speaker 4: So I was so happy about it.
- 29:40Speaker 2: That's actually so cool. That is a significant discount. You
- 29:45Speaker 2: are one savvy human being.
- 29:47Speaker 4: Yeah, and I got really good stuff that would last
- 29:51Speaker 4: me because it's high quality, you know, gym GEA, and
- 29:55Speaker 4: it's not after two washes. It will be all transparent
- 29:58Speaker 4: when you do a squad.
- 30:00Speaker 2: I love that. Now you've got to get in the gym.
- 30:02Speaker 2: Now you've got to do what you said you were
- 30:04Speaker 2: going to do. I hate that part. I bought myself
- 30:07Speaker 2: some new activewear and I was like, I'm going to
- 30:10Speaker 2: work out. I'm going to go to Pilate's g I
- 30:11Speaker 2: have not done Pilarates once this year yet. I mean
- 30:15Speaker 2: I will. I love it. I'm about to go back.
- 30:18Speaker 2: But like the motivation, even with the cute outfit, sometimes
- 30:22Speaker 2: just doesn't convert.
- 30:23Speaker 4: Yeah, let's do a step by step. We got the clothes. Yeah.
- 30:26Speaker 2: No, I'm proud of you. I love this for you.
- 30:29Speaker 2: So you're super savvy. What's your worst money habit?
- 30:32Speaker 4: Do you think? I think when I get emotional, I
- 30:37Speaker 4: spend especially on food or little tricks. I'm having a
- 30:41Speaker 4: good day, Oh, let's celebrate and let's, you know, go
- 30:45Speaker 4: to a nice restaurant. I'm having a bad day. Let's
- 30:49Speaker 4: you know, I need to comfort myself. Let's go to
- 30:51Speaker 4: an expensive restaurant. You are me, you know, she's good
- 30:57Speaker 4: at the time.
- 30:58Speaker 2: Yeah, but then you've got nothing to show. Oh, and
- 31:00Speaker 2: less money in your bank account, and you're like, why
- 31:02Speaker 2: did I do that again?
- 31:04Speaker 4: Exactly so? And I think the way that online shopping,
- 31:09Speaker 4: for example, it is so gam fled now. It's so
- 31:12Speaker 4: easy to spend hours of scrolling and edge things. And
- 31:17Speaker 4: I put a time between my purchases, you know, the
- 31:20Speaker 4: time that I add to the card and to you know,
- 31:23Speaker 4: press buy. But still like, yeah, I think a lot
- 31:28Speaker 4: of emotional shopping.
- 31:30Speaker 2: Yeah, that's fair. And how are you kind of curbing
- 31:33Speaker 2: that You're obviously aware of it, which is I guess
- 31:35Speaker 2: the first step. But is that something that you're like, oh,
- 31:38Speaker 2: I still haven't gotten on top of it, or do
- 31:41Speaker 2: you think that, yeah, that's something that you're actually on
- 31:44Speaker 2: top of.
- 31:44Speaker 4: I wouldn't say one hundred percent on top of it.
- 31:47Speaker 4: I would say that I'm really aware, and some days
- 31:51Speaker 4: I can fight against it and like talk to myself
- 31:56Speaker 4: it's like, no, you know, let's keep that for the weekend.
- 31:59Speaker 4: Let's that for a more like wholesome experience. You don't
- 32:03Speaker 4: need that right now, You're just feeling emotional. Other days, Yeah,
- 32:08Speaker 4: it's stronger than me.
- 32:10Speaker 2: I love that. Other days it's stronger than me.
- 32:12Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah. But I think the process is also progress,
- 32:17Speaker 4: you know, like having that awareness and looking at myself
- 32:21Speaker 4: and thinking do I really need that? Or is because
- 32:24Speaker 4: I'm feeling bad about something that happened at work or
- 32:28Speaker 4: I'm feeling lonely That's why I want to compensate in
- 32:31Speaker 4: another way. So at least I think now I have
- 32:36Speaker 4: these awareness and probably the next step to be on
- 32:39Speaker 4: top of it one hundred percent would be really to
- 32:43Speaker 4: action on it. But I'm not perfect some days, are
- 32:47Speaker 4: you know? I'm good? Other days not as much.
- 32:51Speaker 2: That's okay. I love that. At the start of the episode,
- 32:54Speaker 2: you said, V I think I'm a bus What do
- 32:57Speaker 2: you think it would take to get to an a
- 32:59Speaker 2: What does that look like for you?
- 33:01Speaker 4: I really would like to stick to my budget and
- 33:04Speaker 4: not have those emotionals up and down because sometimes I
- 33:09Speaker 4: will put it five hundred dollars on my savings account,
- 33:13Speaker 4: and then at the end of the week, I would,
- 33:15Speaker 4: you know, transfer back to a hundred because I spend
- 33:19Speaker 4: a little bit extra that I had forecasted that I think.
- 33:24Speaker 4: But I'm feeling really like aware of my situation and
- 33:28Speaker 4: I know where my dollars are going. Now I understand
- 33:31Speaker 4: the value of my time, the value of my skills.
- 33:35Speaker 4: That something at the beginning I didn't know much. I
- 33:39Speaker 4: was just happy to do any job before any money.
- 33:43Speaker 4: And now I'm more like feeling confident about saying this
- 33:47Speaker 4: is you know what I bring to the table, and
- 33:49Speaker 4: that's how much I want to be earning. And yeah,
- 33:52Speaker 4: I think I'm getting there. I'm getting there.
- 33:54Speaker 2: I love that you're well on the way. I feel
- 33:57Speaker 2: like it's not too far away. Do you think that
- 33:59Speaker 2: when when you purchase your first apartment or your first unit,
- 34:03Speaker 2: you'll feel a lot more like you're on the way
- 34:05Speaker 2: or is that not part of your feeling of confidence
- 34:09Speaker 2: around money?
- 34:09Speaker 4: Now? I think it will be definitely a game change
- 34:12Speaker 4: because I think I will be more in control of
- 34:15Speaker 4: my decisions. I can, for example, rent the apartment for
- 34:21Speaker 4: a year and then go to Europe and then go
- 34:23Speaker 4: to Brazil. That is something that I really want to
- 34:25Speaker 4: do it and ranting right now I cannot do that
- 34:29Speaker 4: because I'm attattaged to the rent. Definitely, I'm seeing this
- 34:33Speaker 4: first property as my next step to conquer that independence
- 34:38Speaker 4: and be more in control of my decisions and of
- 34:42Speaker 4: my time too.
- 34:43Speaker 2: I love that. I feel like that's such an achievement
- 34:45Speaker 2: as well. Like I just remembering back to the start
- 34:48Speaker 2: of this episode, you were like my grandparents had eleven kids,
- 34:51Speaker 2: like and now you've gone off and you're like looking
- 34:53Speaker 2: at purchasing your first unit and stuff. Do you think
- 34:56Speaker 2: that they would think that's really cool?
- 34:58Speaker 4: I can want even thing that they could create the
- 35:02Speaker 4: concept in their mind that you know, their grown child
- 35:07Speaker 4: went to leave overseas on the other side of the
- 35:10Speaker 4: country and like having her own career, are you know,
- 35:15Speaker 4: living her best life and buying a property because they
- 35:18Speaker 4: didn't have a property, No.
- 35:20Speaker 2: They didn't have that like accent, and I just I
- 35:22Speaker 2: love that, like you've turned what you went through and
- 35:26Speaker 2: like not that it was bad, it sounds like a
- 35:29Speaker 2: beautiful upbringing, but you've just gone and like grown it
- 35:33Speaker 2: into what you wanted, like and you've created this life
- 35:35Speaker 2: all on your own. It's not like anybody gave it

- 35:48Speaker 2: the Gold Coast?
- 35:49Speaker 4: Oh? They are. I think, of course they had an
- 35:52Speaker 4: idea of what Australia was, but not the way that
- 35:56Speaker 4: it is. And I think they were thinking that I
- 35:59Speaker 4: was like struggling way more, you know, like they have
- 36:02Speaker 4: that amy grand mentality, and now they see that I
- 36:06Speaker 4: have my career, I have my things, I live in
- 36:09Speaker 4: a nice place in a nice suburb, I have my
- 36:12Speaker 4: little car. And I don't think they ever even got
- 36:17Speaker 4: like it's something beyond that they could even imagine.
- 36:20Speaker 2: I adore that so much as they must be so proud.
- 36:23Speaker 2: They probably don't want to go home now They're like, oh,
- 36:26Speaker 2: we want to come live with you?
- 36:27Speaker 4: Yeah, exactly.
- 36:29Speaker 2: I love that so much money, Darrist, it has been
- 36:32Speaker 2: an absolute pleasure. I'm so excited for you and this
- 36:35Speaker 2: journey and you purchasing a house later this year and
- 36:38Speaker 2: just getting it together. Like, I'm just so excited that
- 36:41Speaker 2: you're part of our community. You are, honestly, like I
- 36:44Speaker 2: wish people could see you because you're like so glowy
- 36:46Speaker 2: and happy and have the most beautiful curly hair, like
- 36:49Speaker 2: you are a ray of sunshine. Thank you so much

- 36:56Speaker 4: Oh, thank you, And it has been like an absolute
- 36:59Speaker 4: pleasure and to be part of their community and see
- 37:02Speaker 4: you know, on the Facebook group what people share and
- 37:05Speaker 4: feel seen and feel part of the community. Talking about
- 37:09Speaker 4: money with that is such a taboo and I yeah,
