- 0:05Speaker 2: Order Kerni Whoalbury and a waddery woman. And before we
- 0:08Speaker 2: get started on She's on the Money podcast, I would
- 0:11Speaker 2: like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land of
- 0:14Speaker 2: which this podcast is recorded on a wondery country, acknowledging

- 0:31Speaker 2: and lasting impact for tomorrow.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Let's get into it.
- 0:34Speaker 3: She's on the Money, She's on the Money.
- 0:57Speaker 4: Hello, and welcome to She's on the Money, the podcast
- 1:00Speaker 4: Millennials who Want Financial Freedom. My name is Jessica Ricky,
- 1:04Speaker 4: and today I have financial expert Victoria Devine. Hello, we're
- 1:09Speaker 4: here to talk about ETFs in their performance.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, she is pum Yeah.
- 1:15Speaker 4: I got to do research for this and I have
- 1:17Speaker 4: brought it to the table with the end of the
- 1:19Speaker 4: year at our doorstep and with how many of our
- 1:21Speaker 4: community are now on their own investing journeys. Today on
- 1:24Speaker 4: the show, we wanted to do a wrap of the
- 1:26Speaker 4: five best performing asx ETFs from the last financial year.
- 1:30Speaker 1: I mean, we use a stretch. I really wanted to
- 1:33Speaker 1: do that this. Jessica Ricci was.
- 1:35Speaker 4: Like, I don't know about that content, and I was like,
- 1:38Speaker 4: I really want to do the content, and I feel
- 1:40Speaker 4: like there is might be niche. But there is a
- 1:43Speaker 4: group of people who really like this content too, because
- 1:45Speaker 4: last time we did one last year it kind of
- 1:47Speaker 4: blew up in my DMS and people like, oh my gosh,
- 1:49Speaker 4: thank you so much for talking about these or thanks
- 1:51Speaker 4: so much for having more honest, open conversations about ETFs
- 1:55Speaker 4: an actual product.
- 1:56Speaker 1: And I'm excited to do this today.
- 1:57Speaker 4: Before we get into it, I know we've said it
- 1:59Speaker 4: a million time, but in case this is the first
- 2:01Speaker 4: episode you've ever listened to, and ETF is a basket
- 2:04Speaker 4: of shares, is how Victoria ax refreshed. She's a little basket.
- 2:07Speaker 4: Might be Wiker that's in at the moment, it might
- 2:09Speaker 4: be kin, it might be a picnic basket, but it
- 2:11Speaker 4: is a basket of lots of different assets that give
- 2:13Speaker 4: you instant diversification. But to go to your point, jess
- 2:16Speaker 4: that you just made if this is your first Cheese
- 2:18Speaker 4: on the Money episode, fantastic, welcome to our family. We
- 2:21Speaker 4: are so excited to have you. But quick fact check here.
- 2:25Speaker 4: If you're not on your investing journey yet, or maybe
- 2:28Speaker 4: investing feels completely overwhelming, this episode is definitely going to
- 2:32Speaker 4: make that worse. So I would go back and listen
- 2:35Speaker 4: to one of our two investing series that will give
- 2:37Speaker 4: you the basics of absolutely everything you know, so when
- 2:40Speaker 4: you listen to this, it doesn't sound overwhelming. And then
- 2:43Speaker 4: for this She's on the Money community that are absolutely
- 2:45Speaker 4: across this one. We're really excited to do this. But two,
- 2:48Speaker 4: don't feel overwhelmed. If you're like, oh, she's talking about
- 2:51Speaker 4: stuff I've never heard. We are just going to make
- 2:53Speaker 4: it common knowledge. We are going to talk about these
- 2:55Speaker 4: things more often on the She's on the Money pod
- 2:57Speaker 4: this year and next year, because I just think there's
- 2:59Speaker 4: lots of change going on at the moment, and it
- 3:01Speaker 4: makes it so much easier for us to be able
- 3:04Speaker 4: to openly and honestly talk about product and just have
- 3:07Speaker 4: a good band about what it means and how it works.
- 3:09Speaker 4: And I think that these types of conversations are quite constructive.
- 3:12Speaker 4: When you guys are picking assets that are going to
- 3:15Speaker 4: go into your portfolio in saying that before I really
- 3:18Speaker 4: get into the crux of the five ETFs that I'm
- 3:21Speaker 4: going to present to you today, Miss Jesso Ricci, in
- 3:23Speaker 4: true compliance form, Jessica, past performance is not a reliable
- 3:27Speaker 4: predictor of future performance, and you should seek personal financial
- 3:29Speaker 4: advice should you wish to make a decision based upon
- 3:32Speaker 4: any information that you hear today. Yeah, and this is
- 3:34Speaker 4: something we touched on last year, which I think is
- 3:36Speaker 4: really worth saying. Just because it was the top performing
- 3:39Speaker 4: product doesn't.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Mean it will be again.
- 3:42Speaker 4: Well, it doesn't mean we're again, but it also doesn't
- 3:43Speaker 4: mean it's the right product for you. I think as
- 3:45Speaker 4: we go through these people are going to see a
- 3:47Speaker 4: bit of a common theme and it's something that may
- 3:50Speaker 4: not align with a lot of people's values. And you know,
- 3:53Speaker 4: we spoke about this in an earlier investing series, and
- 3:55Speaker 4: investing is such a personal thing that the performance of
- 3:59Speaker 4: the fund is only one element that people would be
- 4:01Speaker 4: considering and there are so many other factors. So this
- 4:04Speaker 4: definitely isn't us saying these are the five things you
- 4:06Speaker 4: should invest in. It's just a really fun review of
- 4:08Speaker 4: the year that was. It's also really interesting because the
- 4:11Speaker 4: world has changed quite significantly since last year when we
- 4:15Speaker 4: talked about ETFs, and in June we entered what's called
- 4:18Speaker 4: a bear market, or a bear market is when officially
- 4:21Speaker 4: the shared market drops by a minimum of twenty percent
- 4:24Speaker 4: from the last twelve months all time high. And I
- 4:26Speaker 4: feel like coming out of COVID when it's not really
- 4:29Speaker 4: out of COVID, but you guys know what I mean.
- 4:31Speaker 4: As we're coming out of COVID and going back to
- 4:34Speaker 4: like kind of business as usual. There were a number
- 4:36Speaker 4: of different industries that like smashed it. Like remember when
- 4:40Speaker 4: we did that ETF episode jets, Like every single ETF
- 4:43Speaker 4: that we presented had like a really really high return,
- 4:46Speaker 4: and I was like, oh my gosh, and this and this,
- 4:48Speaker 4: and there was like some tech companies and some biopharmaceutical companies,
- 4:51Speaker 4: and it was just really interesting. Now having gone through
- 4:54Speaker 4: all of that and having experienced what we've experienced, the
- 4:57Speaker 4: performance is not nearly as high as it was, But
- 5:00Speaker 4: I think it's really interesting to kind of listen to
- 5:02Speaker 4: episodes like this, and if you're interested, maybe go back
- 5:05Speaker 4: and listen to that episode and see what the market
- 5:07Speaker 4: was like twelve months ago. In the types of conversations
- 5:09Speaker 4: we were having because politically, economically, and just literally the
- 5:14Speaker 4: world is a different place today and the types of
- 5:17Speaker 4: ETFs that performed really well in the last financial year
- 5:20Speaker 4: are very different to the ones that performed well in
- 5:22Speaker 4: the financial year before that, and there's really good reasons
- 5:25Speaker 4: for that, and I guess we'll get into the nitty
- 5:27Speaker 4: gritty and the conversation around that as we go through it, Jess. Yeah,
- 5:30Speaker 4: and last thing to throw in there before we jump
- 5:32Speaker 4: into the list itself is these were the best performing
- 5:34Speaker 4: ASX ETFs, so they had to be listed on the
- 5:37Speaker 4: Australian Securities Exchange to be considered for this list.
- 5:41Speaker 1: Get questions. I was going to say, waking into.
- 5:43Speaker 4: It, absolutely to give a little bit of what would
- 5:45Speaker 4: you call it here? Just housekeeping housekeeping here these are
- 5:49Speaker 4: all ASX listed shares and it is post management and
- 5:54Speaker 4: performance fees. Obviously, if you are on a different platform,
- 5:58Speaker 4: there might be platform fees that you personally need to
- 6:00Speaker 4: take into consideration, but this is what the ETF reported
- 6:04Speaker 4: directly post all of their fees taken out, So I
- 6:08Speaker 4: think that's a great place to start, Jess. And as always,
- 6:11Speaker 4: we're clearly going to go five to one because I'm
- 6:14Speaker 4: not going to give you the biggest performing ETF upfront,
- 6:17Speaker 4: am I.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Now, I gotta work for it. No, you've got to
- 6:18Speaker 1: work for it. You gotta wait for the break.
- 6:20Speaker 4: You've gotta go through our advertising because that's how I
- 6:22Speaker 4: pay Jess.
- 6:23Speaker 1: Guys, that's important. I lack money.
- 6:25Speaker 4: Let's kick things off with number five VD.
- 6:27Speaker 1: What have you got?
- 6:28Speaker 2: All right?
- 6:28Speaker 4: So coming in at number five, we have the beta
- 6:31Speaker 4: shares Global Agricultural Companies ETF and the ticker code. So
- 6:36Speaker 4: I feel like ticker code is something I've only just
- 6:38Speaker 4: started talking about. It's definitely not new in this world.
- 6:41Speaker 4: But you know the little code that the ASX use
- 6:43Speaker 4: to like identify a share, it's called a ticker code.
- 6:47Speaker 4: Go figure. Because the ticker board, so you know, you
- 6:50Speaker 4: would have seen the pictures like yeah, real old school,
- 6:53Speaker 4: they will have stre exactly, so the boards on the
- 6:56Speaker 4: walls that would like tick over the performance. It's the
- 6:59Speaker 4: ticker because obviously they weren't going to write Beta shares
- 7:02Speaker 4: Global Agricultural Company ATF what they were going to do.
- 7:05Speaker 4: And I really like this ticker code. It's food that's clever. Yes,
- 7:09Speaker 4: so funny. Anyway, So the first fun that we're looking
- 7:12Speaker 4: at today is basically exactly what it says in the title.
- 7:15Speaker 4: It is a global agricultural company is ETF. So as
- 7:19Speaker 4: we said, this is an ASX listed ETF, but that
- 7:23Speaker 4: doesn't mean it's only got Australian shares in it, right.
- 7:25Speaker 4: Food is an agricultural based ETF that tracks a whole
- 7:28Speaker 4: heap of food producing companies from around the world, so
- 7:31Speaker 4: you might have heard of a whole heap of the
- 7:33Speaker 4: companies in there. You've got Tyson Foods and Archer Daniels
- 7:36Speaker 4: Midland and Deer and Co. And Food because it's way
- 7:39Speaker 4: more fun to just refer to it as it's ticker code,
- 7:42Speaker 4: because it's got a good one. Gave investors a total
- 7:44Speaker 4: of three point five percent return over the twenty twenty
- 7:48Speaker 4: two financial year, which honestly looks pretty good if you
- 7:51Speaker 4: compare it to our top performing ASX shares. Really interesting
- 7:55Speaker 4: the difference between the bottom performing at the top five
- 7:58Speaker 4: this year versus last year made it into the top
- 8:01Speaker 4: five jests, yeah, with only three point five percent last
- 8:04Speaker 4: year's bottom five, like number five.
- 8:07Speaker 1: Was trying to say.
- 8:08Speaker 4: It came in at thirty nine point three two exactly
- 8:11Speaker 4: right like last year was absolutely insane and I think,
- 8:15Speaker 4: and like I can't remember because it was a while ago.
- 8:17Speaker 4: I would have been like, guys, this is so irregular,
- 8:19Speaker 4: like it is not common. But you've got to remember
- 8:22Speaker 4: that a lot of the shares that were on that
- 8:24Speaker 4: top list actually were shares that had performed insanely well
- 8:29Speaker 4: over COVID, and COVID was kind of like an outlier
- 8:33Speaker 4: for what economic performance actually looked like. So people were like,
- 8:36Speaker 4: oh my gosh, now we're going to get on it.
- 8:37Speaker 4: Like remember how Zoom had that like massive influx of users,
- 8:41Speaker 4: because it just made sense. Yeah, you don't often see
- 8:44Speaker 4: such crazy performance in the share market, but it was
- 8:47Speaker 4: obviously quite responsive to the times we were going through.
- 8:51Speaker 4: And now we've kind of come off a little bit.
- 8:52Speaker 4: We're in a bear market. You know. There is talk
- 8:55Speaker 4: from a lot of politicians and a lot of economists
- 8:57Speaker 4: that we are on the way to some form of session.
- 9:00Speaker 4: So obviously the market's going to have pulled back a
- 9:02Speaker 4: little bit and be a little bit tighter with their
- 9:04Speaker 4: purse string. So performance this year isn't looking nearly as
- 9:07Speaker 4: sexy as it was last year. Yeah. Well, as someone
- 9:09Speaker 4: whose portfolio is largely in the red, it's kind of
- 9:12Speaker 4: like any kind of positive return is a great thing,
- 9:15Speaker 4: so I can see why it's scraping in at three
- 9:17Speaker 4: point five Does this make you like, when we have
- 9:19Speaker 4: this conversation and I say, Jess, when we're talking about
- 9:22Speaker 4: the top five ETFs and number five is at three
- 9:25Speaker 4: point five percent, does that make you feel slightly better
- 9:28Speaker 4: about looking at your own portfolio and going, Okay, well,
- 9:31Speaker 4: you know that isn't as good compared to last year.
- 9:33Speaker 4: Does that give you more context or I guess confidence? Yeah?
- 9:36Speaker 1: I think so.
- 9:37Speaker 4: I think looking at this list, the numbers seem a
- 9:39Speaker 4: lot more reasonable compared to last year's, which was you know,
- 9:43Speaker 4: entry point of almost forty percents and I'm to almost
- 9:46Speaker 4: ninety I think it was. It definitely makes it seem
- 9:49Speaker 4: a lot smarter. I think I'm not feeling too anxious
- 9:52Speaker 4: because we've done so much groundwork this year about understanding
- 9:55Speaker 4: the cycles of the market and understanding that you know,
- 9:58Speaker 4: you're not always going to be doing super well and
- 10:01Speaker 4: that's totally fine. It about time in the market, not
- 10:03Speaker 4: timing the market. Yes, Queen, you're like, maybe me, you
- 10:06Speaker 4: just spit out all the stuff I say, and I
- 10:07Speaker 4: love it.
- 10:08Speaker 1: Yeah, I do. I sound exactly I love it.
- 10:10Speaker 4: I love it. I would wear that outfit though, So
- 10:12Speaker 4: that's good. It's cute. We almost matched sometimes, if that's okay,
- 10:16Speaker 4: All right, back on track, Victoria, what came in at
- 10:19Speaker 4: number four? Okay, so number four is the Van Neck
- 10:21Speaker 4: Australian Resources ETF not as sexy of a ticker code
- 10:25Speaker 4: this time, I do apologize. The ticker code is mv R,
- 10:29Speaker 4: and I can't even think of a cute acronym or
- 10:31Speaker 4: something that suits that, so.
- 10:32Speaker 1: We just move on from that.
- 10:34Speaker 4: Pick ticer because like food makes sense global Agriculture. MVR
- 10:37Speaker 4: isn't even an abbreviation of the title. Yeah, usually it
- 10:40Speaker 4: is an abbreviation of the title, but sometimes if an
- 10:42Speaker 4: abbreviation already exists, they will just pick something that makes
- 10:46Speaker 4: sense for that fund. And the V I'm assuming stance
- 10:49Speaker 4: for Van Neck and it might be like something vanic Resources.
- 10:53Speaker 4: I don't actually know off the top of my head
- 10:54Speaker 4: what that particular one is. But often because there are
- 10:58Speaker 4: so many big companies on the list, they double krinom
- 11:01Speaker 4: might no, no, no, they won't double up. They will
- 11:03Speaker 4: make you pick a different ticker code. So like you know,
- 11:05Speaker 4: if you're going to go with like Rio, tinto. Right,
- 11:07Speaker 4: they've already got Rio. So if Rio Underwear wanted to
- 11:10Speaker 4: list on the ASX, they would have to come up
- 11:12Speaker 4: with a different ticker code. It's like Instagram names and
- 11:14Speaker 4: all the good ones are taken and you have to
- 11:16Speaker 4: do it like a dot or an understor Right, there's
- 11:18Speaker 4: an underscore in my name because there's a woman in
- 11:20Speaker 4: the US called Victoria Devine and she's like a pr
- 11:23Speaker 4: person and woman. You've got all of my usernames. Cut
- 11:27Speaker 4: this out, rude. I couldn't even get the TikTok name.
- 11:30Speaker 4: When TikTok started to become a thing, I was like,
- 11:32Speaker 4: this is my time to shine.
- 11:33Speaker 1: I'm going to get Victoria Devine.
- 11:34Speaker 4: I did not. I still had to use my underscore.
- 11:36Speaker 4: She was too speedy. Tell me more speedy about MVR.
- 11:39Speaker 4: This fund holds ASX shares, So it's Australian only, which
- 11:43Speaker 4: I mean is probably pretty obvious given it's called the
- 11:46Speaker 4: Australian Resources ETF, but only in the resources sector. So
- 11:51Speaker 4: when we talk about the resources sector, that's like energy
- 11:54Speaker 4: and fuel, and we are talking about oil and petrol
- 11:58Speaker 4: and petroleum production and stuff like that. So this one's
- 12:02Speaker 4: a little bit debated. Because there are obviously going to
- 12:04Speaker 4: be people on either side of the fence, people who
- 12:06Speaker 4: are like yes, investing resources, and then people who are
- 12:09Speaker 4: like no, it's unethical, Like that's not aligned to my values.
- 12:12Speaker 4: This episode is not about your values. This is just
- 12:14Speaker 4: about hey, here are the top five performing ones. Obviously,
- 12:17Speaker 4: you guys know that I'm probably more aligned to an
- 12:19Speaker 4: ethical portfolio because that's just where my values sit. But honestly,
- 12:23Speaker 4: you do you boo. Australia is known for its resources
- 12:27Speaker 4: production and export. And as an Australian who is also
- 12:32Speaker 4: an investor and somebody who I would say knows the
- 12:35Speaker 4: shere market pretty well, a lot of our performance does
- 12:38Speaker 4: come from resources. Because you think about our main exports, like,
- 12:41Speaker 4: we aren't the type of country who you know exports massive,
- 12:45Speaker 4: massive amounts of corn or like do you know what
- 12:47Speaker 4: I mean? Like you know New Zealand to the export shape. Great,
- 12:51Speaker 4: they don't have as many resources as us, but with
- 12:53Speaker 4: the amount of land we have, it kind of makes
- 12:55Speaker 4: sense that the world relies on us for that.
- 12:58Speaker 1: So you can't just cut.
- 12:59Speaker 4: That sector out comempletely anyway. Complete side note, they hold
- 13:03Speaker 4: some pretty big names. So I mentioned Rio before. That's
- 13:06Speaker 4: a good place to start. Rio is in that portfolio.
- 13:08Speaker 4: Then there's BHP, which everybody would know, and Woodside Energy Group,
- 13:12Speaker 4: which is again a really popular name. So essentially the
- 13:15Speaker 4: Vanick Australian Resources ETF managed to give a total return
- 13:19Speaker 4: Jessica of a very exciting five percent over the twenty
- 13:23Speaker 4: twenty two financial year for its investors.
- 13:25Speaker 1: Five percent.
- 13:26Speaker 4: Given I know it's only a small portion of portfolio,
- 13:29Speaker 4: but given how freaking expensive petrol has been this rude, right,
- 13:34Speaker 4: and given that BHP sits in that portfolio, I'm really
- 13:37Speaker 4: surprised that it's only five percent.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm surprised at the amount of return.
- 13:41Speaker 4: I'm not surprised that they've made this list because I
- 13:43Speaker 4: was like, okay, cool, they're absolutely turning a profit. But
- 13:46Speaker 4: in saying that, a lot of companies are not just
- 13:49Speaker 4: exporting their importing. So as we know, BEHP are absolutely
- 13:53Speaker 4: an importer as well as an exporter, and that means
- 13:56Speaker 4: that they are having to pay the fuel prices that
- 14:00Speaker 4: the UAE are setting for us, so not every single
- 14:03Speaker 4: discount actually gets past to us because sometimes it has
- 14:06Speaker 4: to be absorbed into the cost. So I think that
- 14:07Speaker 4: that makes a lot of sense. But at the same time,
- 14:10Speaker 4: it's kind of a joke.
- 14:11Speaker 1: I don't like it.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:12Speaker 4: Also, while we're chatting about it, Rio is a really
- 14:15Speaker 4: controversial share and sometimes that comes up in our comments section.
- 14:20Speaker 4: Can you run me and everybody listening through the why.
- 14:23Speaker 1: There's a lot to unpack there.
- 14:25Speaker 4: I mean, predominantly I would say it's their desecration of
- 14:27Speaker 4: Aboriginal sacred land and that makes me really mad. And
- 14:31Speaker 4: then er shareholders blasted Rio recently over board exodus, so
- 14:35Speaker 4: basically their entire board just yeat it out of there,
- 14:38Speaker 4: And James Packer basically said that the resignation of all
- 14:42Speaker 4: three independent directors under pressure from Rio reeks of something
- 14:45Speaker 4: terribly wrong. So there's a lot of skepticism in addition
- 14:49Speaker 4: to the fact that they are in the resources sector,
- 14:51Speaker 4: so people already looking at them as like, what are
- 14:54Speaker 4: you doing for the environment? How does that work? And yeah,
- 14:57Speaker 4: it's just a bit of a spicy topic. And historically
- 14:59Speaker 4: their share prices have been very ebby and very flowy,
- 15:02Speaker 4: Like I remember back in like twenty fifteen, twenty sixteen,
- 15:06Speaker 4: there was like a fifty percent drop in their share prices.
- 15:09Speaker 4: When I was talking to clients, like obviously portfolios I
- 15:12Speaker 4: hadn't written, but talking to clients about what they held,
- 15:15Speaker 4: and it's always just been a little bit controversial, a
- 15:17Speaker 4: little bit topical from my perspective. I just think that resources,
- 15:21Speaker 4: I understand it, I respect that it exists. I respect
- 15:24Speaker 4: that it really holds up a lot of our economy.
- 15:28Speaker 4: So we can't just you know, evict it from the
- 15:30Speaker 4: country and say, oh, we shouldn't do that. But what
- 15:33Speaker 4: can we do to be more respectful? What can we
- 15:35Speaker 4: do to help climate change? What can we do to
- 15:37Speaker 4: you know, rebuild the Great Barrier reef? And there are
- 15:39Speaker 4: actually a number of different resource companies that if you're
- 15:43Speaker 4: interested in being exposed to resources, we only want to
- 15:46Speaker 4: be exposed to resources who are also.
- 15:48Speaker 1: Trying to help the community.
- 15:49Speaker 4: I think that's a really good space to have a
- 15:51Speaker 4: conversation in as well. And I won't get into it now,
- 15:53Speaker 4: but yeah, Reo, it wouldn't be one of them, all right,
- 15:56Speaker 4: I reckon, we've got time for one more before we
- 15:59Speaker 4: go to a quick break.
- 16:00Speaker 1: What is sitting at number three?
- 16:01Speaker 4: All right? Less spicy than talking about resources? Just is
- 16:04Speaker 4: the SMP five hundred high yield low volatility ETF and
- 16:07Speaker 4: its ticker code absolutely makes no sense. It's z y
- 16:10Speaker 4: us us.
- 16:12Speaker 1: Zeus so us. I mean that makes me want to
- 16:15Speaker 1: buy it now.
- 16:16Speaker 4: Apart from its performance, I mean, this performance is okay,
- 16:18Speaker 4: but there's obviously two more better ones coming after the break.
- 16:22Speaker 4: But essentially, this ETF is really income focused. So it's
- 16:25Speaker 4: a fund that tries to track a select group of
- 16:28Speaker 4: US companies that are picked to maximize income, money win,
- 16:33Speaker 4: but also minimize risk or volatility that it is exposed to.
- 16:36Speaker 4: So that's, from my perspective, pretty sexy. Whoever's organizing that
- 16:40Speaker 4: sounds good. So you might know some of its current holdings,
- 16:42Speaker 4: and a lot of its holdings, from my perspective, are
- 16:44Speaker 4: actually kind of like in Australia we call them blue
- 16:47Speaker 4: chip stocks. I would say blue chip. They're tried, they're true,
- 16:49Speaker 4: they're tested, they've existed for a lot of years. So
- 16:52Speaker 4: for example, the technology company IBM, So you would have
- 16:55Speaker 4: heard of IBM, you would have heard of Chevron, you
- 16:57Speaker 4: would have heard of craft. Heins like that makes and
- 17:00Speaker 4: it might not be something that you recognize, Jess. But
- 17:04Speaker 4: Philip Morris International, do you know what that is?
- 17:07Speaker 1: No idea?
- 17:08Speaker 4: You probably haven't heard of it before, and it makes
- 17:10Speaker 4: sense because you don't smoke. They are a cigarette company,
- 17:13Speaker 4: and they are arguably the most recognized and best selling
- 17:16Speaker 4: international cigarette company. Marlborough Marlborough.
- 17:20Speaker 1: Oh yes, yeah, I'm not very heard at that.
- 17:22Speaker 4: It's never picked up a dart in my life. But
- 17:24Speaker 4: I find it really interesting. And I'm not trying to
- 17:26Speaker 4: give them credit. I just really like creeping on products.
- 17:28Speaker 1: But get this.
- 17:29Speaker 4: They are and were the biggest multinational tobacco company in
- 17:34Speaker 4: the US, with their products sold in more than one
- 17:37Speaker 4: hundred and eighty companies. And now if you google that company,
- 17:41Speaker 4: the description of their company is get this, Jessica. We're
- 17:44Speaker 4: building Philip Morris International's future on smoke free products that
- 17:49Speaker 4: are a better choice than cigarette smoking that goes in
- 17:52Speaker 4: direct conflict to the product that they sell. That's interesting
- 17:56Speaker 4: because they still produce the Ciggi's Baby. Yeah, Like they're
- 17:59Speaker 4: still taking most of their money off that, but they're
- 18:02Speaker 4: literally changing their focus because they know that the future
- 18:04Speaker 4: maybe doesn't include them, and they're trying to be on
- 18:06Speaker 4: that train. And I think that's really interesting. Is that
- 18:08Speaker 4: green washing or is that No, that's not green washing.
- 18:10Speaker 4: I think that that's a business identifying that they have
- 18:13Speaker 4: limited time left before they'll either be made illegal or
- 18:16Speaker 4: redundant or you know, drop in sales. Like here in Australia,
- 18:20Speaker 4: we know that the tax on cigarettes has absolutely been
- 18:23Speaker 4: astronomical for good reason. It's to deter people from purchasing it.
- 18:27Speaker 4: It's not because the government's trying to make more money.
- 18:29Speaker 4: They're just trying to make it more inaccessible, which makes sense.
- 18:33Speaker 4: But that leads to a decrease in people buying their product,
- 18:36Speaker 4: which means they have to also up their prices. So
- 18:39Speaker 4: I think it's just honestly, cigarettes are dying, and I'm
- 18:41Speaker 4: not mad about it anyway. I just find that interesting
- 18:44Speaker 4: about Philip Morris International because it's just nice to know
- 18:46Speaker 4: stuff about stuff, right. But zeus or US, which is
- 18:52Speaker 4: the S and P five hundred high Yield Low Volatility
- 18:55Speaker 4: etf I much prefers use manage to give all of
- 18:57Speaker 4: its investors a twenty twenty two financial year return of
- 19:01Speaker 4: twelve point seven percent.
- 19:02Speaker 1: Jessica, the concept.
- 19:03Speaker 4: Of a high yield low volatility very appealing, very sexy.
- 19:09Speaker 1: It may be sexy. Twelve point seven percent is not
- 19:11Speaker 1: bad either.
- 19:12Speaker 4: It's not bad, and I mean I would question like
- 19:15Speaker 4: I just feel like Philip Morris obviously exists. I'm like, oh,
- 19:18Speaker 4: is it really low volatility? There's so much risk. Yeah,
- 19:21Speaker 4: there's so much risk from me as a non smoker
- 19:24Speaker 4: because I'm like, that's going to be dead soon. But
- 19:27Speaker 4: addiction is what is driving their performance, so it's really
- 19:29Speaker 4: not going that far that fast. So that's why I'm
- 19:32Speaker 4: also super interested to see that they've changed their mission
- 19:34Speaker 4: statement because it's like, well, is that really what we're
- 19:37Speaker 4: working towards? Are you're going to protect your profits and
- 19:39Speaker 4: make yourselves look good. It's not green washing because they
- 19:41Speaker 4: are doing that, but it's also just, I don't know,
- 19:43Speaker 4: a little bit controversial.
- 19:45Speaker 1: Ah, super interesting.
- 19:46Speaker 4: Alrighty, let's go to a really quick break because we're
- 19:49Speaker 4: going to make you wait to learn about those top
- 19:50Speaker 4: two Baby, don't go anywhere.
- 19:56Speaker 1: Welcome back everybody.
- 19:57Speaker 4: Today we are reviewing the top five forming ETFs if
- 20:00Speaker 4: the twenty twenty one twenty twenty two financial Yeah, we
- 20:03Speaker 4: just got through numbers five to three, and now we've
- 20:06Speaker 4: saved the two best for us. That's true best because
- 20:10Speaker 4: like we're about to talk about a fuel ETF so
- 20:14Speaker 4: performing Yeah, like we didn't take ethics into consideration, and
- 20:18Speaker 4: I mean I thought about this. I was thinking when
- 20:20Speaker 4: we're scripting this jests and just like pulling together all
- 20:22Speaker 4: the research. I was like, maybe we should do like
- 20:24Speaker 4: the top performing ethical ETFs, but like ethical means something
- 20:28Speaker 4: different to literally everybody, and there's no way of me
- 20:30Speaker 4: pulling together a top performing ethical ETF list without it
- 20:34Speaker 4: becoming a recommendation, because then I would have to say, oh,
- 20:37Speaker 4: I believe this is ethical, and that's not the case
- 20:39Speaker 4: here in Australia.
- 20:40Speaker 1: You just can't do that.
- 20:41Speaker 4: So till we have that, maybe we could do like
- 20:44Speaker 4: a top ESG investing portfolio or something.
- 20:48Speaker 1: Yes, but I mean slide into our.
- 20:50Speaker 4: DMS and let us know what you want, because we
- 20:52Speaker 4: really like not having to think of our own topics
- 20:55Speaker 4: and really like being spoon fed. But speaking of spoonfed,
- 20:58Speaker 4: I went to the a Sex website and took the
- 21:01Speaker 4: top five performing ETFs of twenty twenty two's financial year,
- 21:04Speaker 4: and now I'm presenting them to you guys.
- 21:06Speaker 1: As if I did all the work.
- 21:07Speaker 4: Myself, you still a little bit of the work, got
- 21:09Speaker 4: a little bit of the work he ASX did most
- 21:12Speaker 4: of it. But so number two we've got the Beta
- 21:15Speaker 4: Shares Global Energy Company's ETF, which has the ticker code
- 21:19Speaker 4: Jess fuel.
- 21:20Speaker 1: Oh tell me more, what does that contain?
- 21:22Speaker 4: Just press that they got that, Like what a good
- 21:24Speaker 4: ticker code. So basically, this is really similar to the
- 21:27Speaker 4: first ETF that we talked about. So we talked about
- 21:30Speaker 4: the Beta Shares Global Agricultural Fund, which was the ASX
- 21:33Speaker 4: ticker code food. Now we're talking about the ASX ticker
- 21:35Speaker 4: code Fuel. So I would argue that Beta shares are
- 21:38Speaker 4: the most creative and kind of witty when it comes
- 21:40Speaker 4: to mating their ASX ticker codes. But this fund, in contrast,
- 21:45Speaker 4: actually holds a diversified range of global energy shares rather
- 21:48Speaker 4: than agricultural ones. So once again we see Chevron here.
- 21:52Speaker 4: Again Chevron is a really big oil and resources company.
- 21:56Speaker 4: But then we see like Mobile and Royal, Dutch Shell
- 21:58Speaker 4: and BP, so all of the big names that if
- 22:01Speaker 4: I said, Jess, you're on, like the price is right,
- 22:04Speaker 4: what are the top five fuel companies? You probably put
- 22:06Speaker 4: them all into this ETF. And this ETF actually really
- 22:10Speaker 4: outperformed the other three that we have already discussed because
- 22:14Speaker 4: over the twenty twenty two financial years, twenty seven point
- 22:17Speaker 4: nine percent return, twenty seven point nine that's sounding a
- 22:20Speaker 4: lot better than when we started this list at three
- 22:22Speaker 4: point five, it's just like a lot more clickbaity, right,
- 22:26Speaker 4: It's far more clickbaity than you know what it was
- 22:28Speaker 4: going to be. So I'm probably going to use this
- 22:30Speaker 4: to market episode. Yeah, very smart from you. Obviously, as
- 22:34Speaker 4: we said before, resources very controversial, petrol particularly, But that's
- 22:39Speaker 4: what's really frustrating about this space, right, Like when I
- 22:42Speaker 4: was putting together share portfolios way back when it wasn't
- 22:46Speaker 4: normal to take into consideration ethical considerations, really, I would
- 22:51Speaker 4: talk to people and it's just like a no brainer
- 22:53Speaker 4: to put resources as one of the biggest players, especially
- 22:57Speaker 4: in high net wealth share portfolios, because they just so
- 23:00Speaker 4: tried and true and kind of stable. Like historically, obviously
- 23:04Speaker 4: at the moment we are going through a pretty tumultuous time,
- 23:06Speaker 4: but historically they would just pay their dividends, do their job,
- 23:10Speaker 4: you know, keep bringing resources in. Like it just it
- 23:14Speaker 4: was something where old school people would just buy BEHP
- 23:18Speaker 4: because it made sense. Like I remember having one client, Jess,
- 23:21Speaker 4: and obviously I didn't on board them. It was like
- 23:23Speaker 4: a historical client that I inherited and I loved them,
- 23:27Speaker 4: so they passed away and their portfolio was inherited by
- 23:30Speaker 4: their son who ultimately became my client, and we were
- 23:33Speaker 4: talking about the portfolio and what we wanted to do,
- 23:36Speaker 4: and this son was really passionate about ethical investing, like
- 23:39Speaker 4: so passionate about the Great Barrier reef and really hated
- 23:42Speaker 4: the fact. I might have told this story on the
- 23:44Speaker 4: podcast before, but really hated the fact that he owned
- 23:47Speaker 4: BEHP because he was, like, I do so much he
- 23:50Speaker 4: does volunteering to like clean up the reef and like
- 23:53Speaker 4: you know, it donates money, and like very high networth
- 23:55Speaker 4: family as well. He's like, I need to get rid
- 23:57Speaker 4: of it. But when we went and did the analysis
- 24:01Speaker 4: to work out how much it would cost him to
- 24:03Speaker 4: dispose of the shares, we had to go so far
- 24:06Speaker 4: back that his shares in BHP were bought in British
- 24:09Speaker 4: pound sterling wow, back when we didn't even have Australian currency,
- 24:14Speaker 4: because his dad and then his grandfather had bought them
- 24:18Speaker 4: and obviously they were so cheap that now that he
- 24:21Speaker 4: needed to sell them, just think about those capital gains.
- 24:24Speaker 4: He was going to lose nearly half of his portfolio
- 24:27Speaker 4: just by extinguishing it and like selling down that asset
- 24:30Speaker 4: to buy something else. And when it comes to the
- 24:32Speaker 4: power of money. I mean, this is a complete side
- 24:34Speaker 4: note and a complete tangent, but like I think it's interesting.
- 24:38Speaker 4: We ended up coming to the agreement that we would
- 24:40Speaker 4: actually keep those shares because the money that that share
- 24:44Speaker 4: was making could be donated to saving the reef and
- 24:46Speaker 4: you know, having a positive impact. So even if you
- 24:49Speaker 4: own things, sometimes that's not the best idea to just
- 24:52Speaker 4: sell them down because your quote values have changed, because
- 24:55Speaker 4: the impact might be far bigger than what you can
- 24:57Speaker 4: do with the money that your money is making. Think
- 25:00Speaker 4: that there's just a lot to think about here, and
- 25:03Speaker 4: you know, there's absolutely no shame in what you own.
- 25:05Speaker 4: I want you to be just really happy, but there
- 25:07Speaker 4: are sometimes creative ways that we need to go round
- 25:10Speaker 4: to make sure that you are happy with the portfolio
- 25:12Speaker 4: that you have. Yeah, super interesting, not at all surprising
- 25:15Speaker 4: with the rising energy prices that that particular ETF did
- 25:19Speaker 4: pretty well. I'm not surprised to either, Jess. But you
- 25:23Speaker 4: know what, we have one that has come in at
- 25:25Speaker 4: over fifty percent and that is our number one performing
- 25:28Speaker 4: asx ETF of twenty twenty two's financial year. Can you
- 25:33Speaker 4: guess what space it is in I'm gonna say resource.
- 25:36Speaker 1: It is in resource is your genius.
- 25:38Speaker 4: Beta Shares have taken out three of the top spots
- 25:41Speaker 4: in this list. By the way, Ah, they've done well.
- 25:44Speaker 4: I feel like they did really well. They work upstairs
- 25:46Speaker 4: from us, Jess, they're in our office. We're basically best
- 25:49Speaker 4: friends with an ETF provider. Ten out of ten love
- 25:53Speaker 4: their work. But the Beta shares, this one doesn't sound
- 25:55Speaker 4: nearly as sexy. The Beta Shares Crude Oil Index ETF,
- 25:59Speaker 4: which has the taker CODEO ooho or if you like
- 26:05Speaker 4: kind of blow your eyes, the o's kind of get
- 26:07Speaker 4: a little bit skinnier and it's like triple zero. Please
- 26:09Speaker 4: call them because you own a crude oil ETF. But yeah,
- 26:12Speaker 4: let's not get into that. My personal opinion should not
- 26:15Speaker 4: be foreshadowing your decisions as an investor. But essentially the
- 26:19Speaker 4: best performing ASX ETF is the Beta Shares Crude Oil
- 26:23Speaker 4: Index ETF, and basically it's another energy focused one, which
- 26:26Speaker 4: we're not surprised about. But it's actually nothing like the
- 26:30Speaker 4: funds that we've already talked about. So instead of tracking
- 26:33Speaker 4: energy companies, it actually only invests in West Texas intermediate
- 26:38Speaker 4: crude oil futures contracts and doesn't actually hold any shares
- 26:42Speaker 4: within it.
- 26:42Speaker 1: What does that mean?
- 26:43Speaker 4: Not holding any actual shares, so jess, instead of having
- 26:46Speaker 4: shares of other companies. Like before, we were talking about
- 26:49Speaker 4: the Beta shares global energy companies, and I listed out
- 26:52Speaker 4: the companies that it had shares in, So in its
- 26:55Speaker 4: basket it holds little pieces of other companies, whereas the
- 27:00Speaker 4: Crude Oil Index does not actually do that. It actually
- 27:03Speaker 4: only invests in crude oil futures contracts, so actual contracts,
- 27:07Speaker 4: so basically pieces of paper are in your ETF, and
- 27:10Speaker 4: it tracks the average and the returns of the West
- 27:12Speaker 4: Texas Intermediate Crude Oil futures as opposed to actual shares
- 27:16Speaker 4: that might be invested inside that. So it's actually just
- 27:20Speaker 4: futures contracts instead of shares. I didn't even know that
- 27:23Speaker 4: was a thing. It's wild what you can do with
- 27:25Speaker 4: an ETF these days.
- 27:26Speaker 1: Wow.
- 27:27Speaker 4: So it has obviously been the biggest performer over the
- 27:30Speaker 4: last financial year with let's take it away with sixty
- 27:35Speaker 4: point three percent over that period of time.
- 27:38Speaker 1: Wow, that is a huge amount.
- 27:41Speaker 4: I agree, But I also think it's kind of funny
- 27:44Speaker 4: that it's West Texas shares, so basically it's just a
- 27:47Speaker 4: benchmark that is used in trading, and there's another few.
- 27:51Speaker 4: There's the Brent Crude and there's the Dubai Omann Crude
- 27:54Speaker 4: Oil Index. So it's all quite interesting in that space.
- 27:57Speaker 4: But no, ETFs don't just necessarily have to hold shares
- 28:01Speaker 4: just they can also hold bonds, which I think is
- 28:03Speaker 4: quite interesting. But given how conservative they are, they were
- 28:06Speaker 4: never going to make it to the top five performing
- 28:08Speaker 4: of twenty twenty twos financial year super interesting. A lot
- 28:12Speaker 4: of resources this year, which I feel like was not
- 28:15Speaker 4: as much the case last year.
- 28:16Speaker 1: Last year, I remember correctly, was very tech heavy.
- 28:19Speaker 4: Yeah, very tech heavy because of what we've just gone
- 28:21Speaker 4: through and now think about the world coming back. If
- 28:24Speaker 4: you're getting more expensive, the war that's going on at
- 28:26Speaker 4: the moment involving Russia and Ukraine, like, there is a
- 28:29Speaker 4: lot going on in that space making oil and resources
- 28:33Speaker 4: far more valuable and people want to get their hands
- 28:36Speaker 4: on them. So it kind of makes sense that this
- 28:39Speaker 4: is the way that our top five shares are performing.
- 28:41Speaker 4: And I actually I kind of want to like speed
- 28:44Speaker 4: into the future and see what next year looks like,
- 28:46Speaker 4: because it's going to be different again, it always is.
- 28:48Speaker 1: That's what I was just going to say.
- 28:49Speaker 4: Imagine us sitting here in twelve months time, reviewing again
- 28:53Speaker 4: another year, and if it's like a whole different bunch
- 28:55Speaker 4: of sectors or like, it's just interesting to think about
- 28:58Speaker 4: how it can change so much in such a short
- 29:01Speaker 4: period of time. Yeah, yeah, I get it. And I
- 29:03Speaker 4: guess this is a really good example of why this
- 29:06Speaker 4: is not a recommendation for things that you should buy,
- 29:09Speaker 4: because the shares that we listed last year not on
- 29:12Speaker 4: this list, So if you're expecting the same performance, it's
- 29:15Speaker 4: just not going to happen. Like this is what has happened,
- 29:18Speaker 4: not what will happen. And I think this is just
- 29:20Speaker 4: like really good pieces of education because it just teaches
- 29:23Speaker 4: you a lot about one the share market and how
- 29:25Speaker 4: it performs, but also like what's the economy up to?
- 29:28Speaker 4: What does that mean when we then look at the
- 29:30Speaker 4: share market and it makes sense that the performance isn't
- 29:33Speaker 4: blowing us out of the water in the same way.
- 29:36Speaker 4: But like, mate, I'd be happy with any of those
- 29:38Speaker 4: returns at this point in time because I'm still in
- 29:41Speaker 4: the red. Yeah, same queen, but I recoonne it's about
- 29:44Speaker 4: it today. I hope you guys enjoyed this rap episode.
- 29:47Speaker 4: Let us know if there are any other categories he
- 29:49Speaker 4: likes to wrap.
- 29:50Speaker 1: Last year we.
- 29:50Speaker 4: Did the top literary rap will just summarize. Yeah, we'll
- 29:54Speaker 4: leave the rapping to all the real wrappers. Last year,
- 29:57Speaker 4: I think we did the top five performing shares as well,
- 29:59Speaker 4: which be another fun mount if people are still keen
- 30:02Speaker 4: individual shares like we are absolutely doing that. I've got
- 30:05Speaker 4: we did that.
- 30:05Speaker 1: I'm on it.
- 30:06Speaker 4: I'm on it. I'm on it.
- 30:07Speaker 1: She's gonna go do research right this second. I've got
- 30:10Speaker 1: to go. Guys, I am Audi.
- 30:11Speaker 4: Before we do go, don't forget. If you do want

- 30:19Speaker 4: about shares, about investing, about budget and cash flow, and
- 30:23Speaker 4: just anything finance related.
- 30:24Speaker 1: That you coul possibly think of. We're talking about it.
- 30:26Speaker 4: So she's on the money on Facebook to find us.
- 30:28Speaker 4: Facebook's not your thing. We're on Insta. It's cute, it's fun.
