- 0:57SPEAKER_00: And today we're going to be talking about self-care.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: I was actually privileged enough to be a guest.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: We actually recorded uh recently, um, I recorded with Chelsea on her for her podcast, the Mindful Self-Care Podcast.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: And one of the questions that she asked for me as soon as we started was, what does self-care mean to me?
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: And while I love that question, um, I recognize that I haven't talked a whole lot about self-care even on this podcast.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: And so I thought, you know what, I'm gonna actually dive into it a little bit more.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: And so that's what we're gonna be talking about today, defining the seven pillars of self-care.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: And I invite you to tune into her podcast when it comes out.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: It's supposed to be coming out in a few weeks, and I'll definitely be sharing it on my social media um to hear my take on self-care, but just a little hint had to do with your needs.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: Um, but let's just get go into the seven pillars of self-care.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: So, first of all, let's talk about self-care in general.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: And my whole take on self-care is it does extend beyond uh the you know, a spa day or a relaxing bath at the end of the day.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: While those are great self-care items, there's more to it than that.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: And self-care is so important because it really is the foundation of our physical, emotional, spiritual, and social well-being.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: And it involves us creating some sense of internal balance in order to protect our health and and allows us room to work through stress or anxiety.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: Uh, because if we don't, we're gonna be on the path to burnout.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: And so self-care does play a really crucial role.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: And as I even talked with her, with Chulsi about on her podcast, it's a lot of what we do, even something like as simple as um, not as simple because boundaries aren't simple, but something like putting boundaries in place is actually an act of self-care.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: And as she said so eloquently on the podcast, so many of the things that we do can be tied back to elements of self-care.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: And I routinely say that self-care is an act of being self-full.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: It is not being selfish.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: When we are self-full and we're taking care of ourselves, it allows us the ability to then show up completely and holistically in the relationships that we have.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: So let's go into the pillars of self-care.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: We've got physical health, that's you know, making sure that you're taking good care of your body.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: Um, physical self-care promotes not just physical health but also bodily health, right?
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: As well as uh mental and emotional health.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: Then, of course, you do have your emotional well-being.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: That's critical to navigating life's challenges because let's be honest, we don't control what happens in the world, and things are gonna happen.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: They're gonna, there's gonna be ups, downs, twists, and turns, and being able to be able to work through those is part of our emotional well-being.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: Social connection is another element of self-care, it's another pillar of self-care.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: Research shows that having those positive, healthy relationships enhances our social functioning, but it also creates a sense of joy and fulfillment and promotes overall well-being because as human beings, we are relational beings.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: We're looking for that connection with others.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: Another pillar that we'll be talking about is spiritual fulfillment.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: This doesn't have to be related to a specific religion, but spiritual health, aligning your values and seeking deeper meaning.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: Research has shown that that can significantly reduce stress and lead to that healthier lifestyle.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: Another pillar of self-care revolves around personal development, improving and nurturing yourself.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: I I refer to it as understanding yourself on a better and deeper level, uh, having those self-care strategies that can help boost your confidence, help boost your self-esteem, how you see yourself, self-acceptance, and lean into self-leadership.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: We also have space management, which involves organizing and optimizing your physical environment to support your well-being.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: There's definitely, you know, when your space is really cluttered, there's research out there that says that that will actually contribute to maybe feeling more scattered or almost increase your stress and anxiety.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: So having some space management is an act of self-care as well.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: And then financial stability.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: And that means that you have consistent and sufficient income or resources to meet your needs without bringing an unmanageable amount of debt upon yourself.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: That again is related to self-care.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: And I know that even in my network, I have some amazing financial coaches.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: Um, and and having that financial stability and working with somebody like that is again an active self-care.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: So if we were to engage or talk about some practical tips for embracing self-care within those pillars that I was just mentioning, if we're talking about physical health, a self-care practice could be a regular exercise regime.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: If, for instance, your body is not at a place where it can handle rigorous exercise, sometimes it could even include stretching or practicing relaxation is another way that you can embrace self-care in the pillar of physical health, in the pillar of emotional well-being, that pillar of self-care, self-compassion, which I have talked about routinely on this podcast and continue to talk about because I think finding that kindness over judgment is huge.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: That is an act of self-care, a gratitude practice, uh paying attention to your feelings and giving them space to be without judgment but getting curious with them, setting boundaries, as I mentioned earlier, definitely an act of self-care, engaging in activities that bring you joy, that make you smile, make you laugh, seeking support, whether it be through coaching or something else, that can be an act of self-care when it comes to uh uh your emotional well-being.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: Then, of course, if we're talking about social connection, some ways to practically put that into action is to interact regularly with friends and family, participate in group activities.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: I know that I work with individuals that really do struggle to find their social group and putting yourself in a position to maybe join different meetups or different get-togethers based on a common interest could be a way to start engaging and socializing and having that social connection.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: That can be an act of self-care.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: When we're talking about personal development, um, that could include setting those, setting those realistic goals, smart goals, um, giving again, we're gonna notice that self-compassion comes up in personal development as well.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: But also personal development, I would say practicing curiosity, uh, finding uh new skills that you might want to learn.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: That could be an act of personal development and in that pillar of self-care, um, practicing skills like time management.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: When we're talking about spiritual fulfillment, again, this isn't necessarily religious-based or religion-based.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: It's really just engaging in things like potentially journaling or practicing daily affirmations or spending time in reflection, uh, practicing mindfulness.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: Again, that's not related to any specific religion, but it allows for deeper connection with not just yourself, but maybe something greater ofin you as well.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: And then we're talking about space management that can involve decluttering.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: Decluttering can be an act of self-care.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: So setting aside some time to declutter maybe your closet might be just what you need in terms of starting with that self-care or creating a dedicated space where you can work or study or exercise even or meditate.
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: A lot of people will talk about creating a zen space.
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: That could be a place where you go to practice your spiritual connection.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: Um, and also that could be a space management way of practicing self-care as well.
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: And then with financial stability, an active self-care could include setting a budget or saving a portion of your income on a weekly or monthly basis, taking time to pay attention to how you invest.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: Those, again, while they seem like actions on their own, which they are, they're also an active self-care because these are these different pillars of self-care.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: And it's important to remember that self-care is not something that we'll get to when we have time, right?
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: We need to give ourselves permission to practice this on a daily basis because when you take care of yourself, it is true that you will be able to show up for others in your life in a deeper, more connected way.
