Transcript
- 0:00I'm Christina and I'm t and this is the Pretty and Pink Again podcast where Motherhood meets rediscovery.
- 0:17Hello.
- 0:18Hello.
- 0:19We have a guest in the house.
- 0:20Yay.
- 0:20Hello.
- 0:21We have our friend Stephanie Gort she's a physician assistant.
- 0:24She works in gastroenterology, ology and weight management.
- 0:28And she's here to break down how the diet culture has shaped us, what difference there is now.
- 0:34She's gonna talk about GLP ones weight loss and the fads now.
- 0:40Yes.
- 0:41So when we were on the phone doing our prep call, we talked about how we grew up in the nineties.
- 0:47Yep.
- 0:47And the height of this diet culture when you would see special K for breakfast and a slim fast and low fat, everything.
- 0:55And you learn two things.
- 0:57One, you're supposed to be smaller.
- 0:59Yep.
- 1:00And that's better.
- 1:01And two, if you're not, it's your fault.
- 1:04Oh yes.
- 1:05So even though I didn't personally grow up like this, because I talked about how my mom was European and we literally ate everything from the house, from the garden, from home.
- 1:17Like my grandmother would kill a rabbit.
- 1:18And that was what was for lunch.
- 1:20But that is not how my children are growing up.
- 1:22My children are very American.
- 1:24They reach for a box.
- 1:25And so now I am so interested in this personally, also, all of the diets that you mentioned.
- 1:33I did.
- 1:33So I went to Weight Watchers when I was 11.
- 1:3811.
- 1:38Wow.
- 1:38And 11 years old.
- 1:39We had all the snack Wells Ling cuisine smart ones.
- 1:43Eat this, not that.
- 1:44Books, like all of that was huge in my household growing up because thinness was such a big thing and I was really overweight as a childness was a big thing.
- 1:52Being thin was like a badge of honor, like an unachievable goal.
- 1:55My mom always told us we were beautiful and we were smart and she would do anything for us.
- 2:00But some message came that when I was 11 I needed to be thinner.
- 2:05And I think part of it was I would go to like field trips when it was hot out and I'd wear like a sweatshirt and shorts instead of a tank top and all the girls wearing jeans, skirts.
- 2:14And my mom would look at me and be like, I know she's uncomfortable so gently, she would bring me to Weight Watchers and we would, you know, do the thing.
- 2:21So I learned about calorie counting.
- 2:24Fat back then that was like the initial fad before low carb and before all this stuff came in.
- 2:29It's crazy'cause we've talked about, on here, Tia and I have talked about when that exact moment is that you realize about body image and it could be external, like you look at other people and start filing things away or like internalizing things.
- 2:46But it also could be when you notice your body.
- 2:49And so do you feel like it was around, I think you had said something around that.
- 2:53It was around that.
- 2:54Yeah.
- 2:54I was eighth grade for me.
- 2:55Okay.
- 2:55Fifth grade.
- 2:55Yeah, I was in, so I was tiny in my early nursery school ages.
- 3:00And then I gained weight in elementary school.
- 3:02I was pretty overweight.
- 3:03Sixth, seventh, eighth grade, ninth grade comes South Beach.
- 3:07Diet was big then.
- 3:07Yes.
- 3:07So I started the South Beach diet.
- 3:09Everything was low carb and then I lost weight and all of a sudden you have boys noticing you, your clothes are.
- 3:16Fit better.
- 3:16Like all this stuff comes.
- 3:18So then in my mind I'm like, okay, thin is in thin is what we need to keep, and I don't thin is in, I don't.
- 3:22I think that also that messaging from the nineties and early two thousands was so diet focused.
- 3:29And I think that if you said that you wanted to lose weight, it was almost like glamorized at that point.
- 3:35Like you're saying, a thin is in, it's a good thing to be thin.
- 3:39Yes.
- 3:39And now I think the messaging has shifted maybe in the opposite direction where if you had said, if you say out loud, I want to lose weight, you're like immediately inundated with no, you look great.
- 3:50And it's all, so it's the opposite right effect.
- 3:53And I think that both messages are dangerous in their own because obviously you want to feel good about yourself.
- 3:58And so I think that you just need to get to a middle ground where you're tuning out the noise, but then you feel good about your own body image.
- 4:06I think that there has to be like a mix of that to be healthy.
- 4:10I still think thin is in.
- 4:12I don't know, one person that's actually does not want to be a good weight.
- 4:17But I think maybe the messaging, and you can, you're gonna speak to this is more, it's more health based, right?
- 4:22Yes.
- 4:22Yes.
- 4:23So it's less vanity and more health.
- 4:25However, there are people like Lizzo and other clinically obese women that are body positive in that sense.
- 4:33And I don't necessarily agree with that either.
- 4:35There's two extremes.
- 4:36There's the th skinny, skinny, skinny obese, obese, obese.
- 4:39And I feel like you have to find that middle ground.
- 4:41When you were younger Yes.
- 4:43And you, your mom recognized my daughter appears uncomfortable.
- 4:46Yes.
- 4:47I wanna help my daughter.
- 4:48It came more from a vanity maybe standpoint at first.
- 4:51Or do you think it was more health based?
- 4:53I was,'cause Weight Watchers is good, right?
- 4:55'cause Weight Watchers, teaches you how to eat portion control.
- 4:59I gained weight on Weight Watchers, but I think hers came from.
- 5:03I'm seeing her with her peers and going into high school and going into her dating years.
- 5:08I want her confidence better.
- 5:10And I think all of us can say when we're at our thinner weight or when we feel better after we lose the baby weight, after we get to our wedding weight, we feel better.
- 5:20You're more excited to get dressed.
- 5:22You are more excited to go shopping.
- 5:23Being in pictures, you're not hiding your body.
- 5:26So yes, thin is.
- 5:28Cool.
- 5:28But the way we used to do it is not, so we used to starve ourselves.
- 5:32We used to do these crazy fat cleanses and diets like I did the Cabbage Soup diet.
- 5:37I don't know if either of you remember that I've heard.
- 5:38Yes.
- 5:38I feel like all of these, it was like, and I always go back to the magazines and the media and all of these things that were circulating for everybody to look at.
- 5:47And so yes, these fads were taken by storm.
- 5:50And I think now though with social media, I feel like it's, it depends on the algorithm and what you're in.
- 5:56But I bet you if you're in that space, you're inundated with that sort of fad diet.
- 6:01And I'm shocked my algorithm has changed.
- 6:04And I think the only reason everything has changed is when I had a kid.
- 6:08And I remember being like 15 and talking to a mom who was very fit and always active.
- 6:13And I said to her like.
- 6:14Are you obsessed with your weight?
- 6:15Like how, and she was like, I was until I had a daughter.
- 6:19And I was like, I don't believe that.
- 6:20Like after I have kids, I'm still gonna do that.
- 6:22But now I see my kids and I won't say the word fat around them, right?
- 6:26I won't.
- 6:27I'll eat dessert with them.
- 6:29I make sure to try to eat every meal with them so that they're not like, why does mommy only eat salads?
- 6:33So I think having kids really did it forces you to have healthier habits because you want them to, right?
- 6:40Because you feel like you're being watched.
- 6:41Yeah.
- 6:41And arguably what you're modeling for them is probably the best.
- 6:44And now, arguably, probably the best you've ever felt.
- 6:47And look because you're practicing I am on some of these things.
- 6:50A GLP one, but yes.
- 6:51But so we'll also go into that.
- 6:53Yeah.
- 6:53Like now we're coupling okay.
- 6:55So there was diet, there was starvation, there was all these things.
- 6:58Over exercising.
- 6:59Over exercising 100 calorie packs, like all this sort of like negative messaging.
- 7:03Part of it for your patients is, it's not all your fault.
- 7:06You can diet and exercise all you want, but there is another like hormone and metabolic component to this, and now insert science, and now you can actually live this like shopping the perimeter of the grocery store and eating a balanced diet because you can have access to some of these medical weight loss drugs that you are prescribing to your patients.
- 7:27Yes.
- 7:28So I wanna go into that a little bit too.
- 7:30We're gonna get right into it.
- 7:31Yeah.
- 7:31Because I think that's, I think that's important and that's huge right now.
- 7:34So I feel like this is very timely, but it's also very important that people get the correct information about this because we were talking, and this is one of those things where.
- 7:45A lot of people are prescribing these things and maybe and not everybody's expert's not the expert.
- 7:50Yeah.
- 7:50Not everybody's an expert and maybe it's not the best method just because somebody prescribes these things, it's like Botox.
- 7:56It's like just because somebody can actually do it doesn't mean they're the best and that you're gonna look the best and feel the best afterwards.
- 8:03So I think that sometimes when things get too big and you're just, it's almost like you're oversaturated with this information.
- 8:09Yeah.
- 8:09You start.
- 8:10Guess losing curiosity of like how to go about doing it.
- 8:14And so I think that's an important message that we're gonna talk about.
- 8:17Also, I think the drugs got a bad rap early on because again, anybody on social media can have a voice.
- 8:22You are a voice that I want our listeners to hear from, because you are actually an expert in this field.
- 8:27You work for a gastroenterologist, you day in and day out, you prescribe these medical weight loss drugs to your patients.
- 8:34You work with them, they work with nutritionists, they work with dieticians.
- 8:37Like you are the person to talk about this.
- 8:40And also you have a long history in this.
- 8:42It's why you went into it.
- 8:43Yes.
- 8:44So the, these drugs get a bad rap.
- 8:46I feel like when people, people lose weight, you're like, oh, are you on ozempic?
- 8:49Are you on this?
- 8:50And nobody wants to share.
- 8:52I saw someone the other day, it's not all bad.
- 8:53And I was like, you look amazing.
- 8:54How long have you been on Ozempic?
- 8:56And she looked at me like, did you just say that to me?
- 8:57I'm like, okay, Manjaro.
- 9:00Well, This is what I do for a living.
- 9:01Yeah.
- 9:01But it shouldn't be shameful because it shouldn't be shameful.
- 9:04It's not just eat less and exercise more.
- 9:06We learned that, right?
- 9:07You can starve yourself and you can over exercise and you may lose 12 pounds in a week.
- 9:12The next time you have a regular meal, you're gonna gain it back.
- 9:15So these medications are allowing people not to.
- 9:18Focus on counting calories and starving themselves, and like it's the first time in a lot of these people's lives that they're allowed to enjoy Right.
- 9:27Pasta and not worry about gaining weight.
- 9:29It's probably also removing some of the guilt and the emotional aspect of that.
- 9:34Yes.
- 9:34Like I feel like if you're just, if there's a little bit more flexibility, just taking that stress and that emotion out of it, I'm sure helps a ton too.
- 9:42Yes.
- 9:42So a patient comes to you Yes.
- 9:43And says, all right, I'm unhappy with my weight, or I'm going through menopause and I've gained like 15 pounds.
- 9:51Where do we start?
- 9:52So oftentimes patients are referred from their primary doctors or other GI doctors because of fatty liver disease, because of diabetes, because of high cholesterol, high blood pressure.
- 10:04So what we do at our first intake is we'll say, okay, tell me your story.
- 10:09I tell them a little bit of my story just so they're not like you.
- 10:12Have a normal BMI you're finish like what do you know?
- 10:14So I try to disarm them and we talk about that.
- 10:17I'll say, what's the highest weight you've ever been?
- 10:19What's the lowest weight you've ever been and what's the goal?
- 10:21Weight?
- 10:22And automatically, if their goal weight is much lower than the lowest weight they've ever been, I wanna be like, okay, let's stop there.
- 10:27I don't know if we're gonna get there, but we can go lower than you are now.
- 10:33And I don't love BMI because it doesn't take into account muscle mass.
- 10:37Arnold Schwarzenegger has the same BMI as some big fat guy and they both have different, right.
- 10:44And they both have different body types.
- 10:45So they'll come in.
- 10:46A lot of the stories are, I was thin growing up.
- 10:49I started the Depo-Provera shot and I gained so much weight.
- 10:52What's that?
- 10:53It's like a birth control.
- 10:54Oh, I started birth control.
- 10:55Okay.
- 10:56Okay.
- 10:56For some people have chronic conditions that they need to be on.
- 10:58Steroids and steroids are crazy.
- 11:00Weight, gaining meds, depression, crazy weight, gaining meds.
- 11:03So for a lot of times these people were dieting and exercising, and their bodies were working against them because even though they were doing everything right that we've been told, they're not losing weight.
- 11:13And we now know it's a combination of hormones, metabolism, genetics, psychology, environmental factors, social factors, like so much.
- 11:22So that's, it's not one size fits all.
- 11:24It's not, no.
- 11:25And that's why these medications are a game changer because they're new, but we're learning all these new indications for it.
- 11:33So came out as a diabetic med.
- 11:35Everyone who had diabetes was taking this medication.
- 11:38When it was prescribed to them, their blood sugars were going down, but they also saw they were losing weight.
- 11:43So now people are looking from the outside and they're like I want that.
- 11:47And that's when people started using diabetic medications for weight loss.
- 11:50And that's where all the uproar came because the shortages, people were taking it away from people who really need it.
- 11:55And then, which is no longer the case, which is no longer the case because the companies who created those diabetic medications were brilliant and changed the name Remarketed.
- 12:05It changed the dosing, and now they're FDA approved for weight loss and obesity.
- 12:10So there's no competition between them anymore.
- 12:13It's So this is this, even though they're similar or the same Yep.
- 12:16They're one is branded this way.
- 12:18Yes.
- 12:18And the other one can still be for, so Ozempic is the first one everyone got it Thinks about Ozempic is a diabetes medication.
- 12:25You cannot get it covered unless you have diabetes.
- 12:28The the weight loss medications that you can ask your doctor about are Zep bound and wegovy and do they work the same or are they different?
- 12:35So Zep bound is the exact same as Moon Jro.
- 12:38Wegovy is the exact same as Ozempic.
- 12:41However, they are different indications, so insurance looks at them differently.
- 12:45Can you walk us through what those differences are for like, those are the two big players right now.
- 12:50Yes.
- 12:50So can you walk us through what those, like, how they would affect your body?
- 12:52Yeah.
- 12:53So GLP ones are a hormone in your body that regulate hunger.
- 12:58They also work as a neurotransmitter in the brain to regulate like food noise and cravings.
- 13:02You might have heard that food noise a lot of people are talking about for sure.
- 13:05So it works by, yeah.
- 13:06Bethany Frankel, I feel like coined that turn term.
- 13:09Yes.
- 13:09And Oprah had a whole special on it.
- 13:12And Okay.
- 13:12So if you guys have never been overweight, you may not know that food can control your mind.
- 13:18You're like thinking all day like, oh, I'm not gonna eat today'cause I wanna have ice cream tonight.
- 13:22Or.
- 13:23Ooh, what do you think the next snack I can have is?
- 13:25Or, what am I, what are they gonna have at the baseball game for food?
- 13:27Sometimes food controls a lot of people's thoughts and that it controls my thoughts in a different way.
- 13:32Me too.
- 13:32Because if I don't eat, I feel like I get hangry.
- 13:36Yes.
- 13:36And I'm like, oh my God, if I don't eat my blood sugar's gonna drop and I'm gonna be angry.
- 13:40And these help with the blood sugar too, these meds.
- 13:42So mine, mine food, and I feel like you're similar.
- 13:45Mine is similar to that, but mine is probably the opposite, which I know might come across controversial, but mine is when I am stressed out or when I'm not in a great place, I actually have the opposite, right.
- 13:58Where I don't have any, I, it's like there's no sound.
- 14:01Yes.
- 14:01And I have to force myself to think about eating.
- 14:05And so that I, that has gotten me into a lot of trouble the opposite way.
- 14:09Yes.
- 14:09Because if I am stressed out, I don't eat right.
- 14:12And some people say, I wish that was my response, because other people I've heard that.
- 14:17Of course.
- 14:17Yep.
- 14:17And but, so I can understand it from that perspective of, okay, it's just the opposite.
- 14:21Like you're thi overthinking versus not thinking.
- 14:24It also works directly to regulate hunger.
- 14:27So food leaves your stomach slower.
- 14:30Okay.
- 14:30You get fuller quicker and so therefore you end up eating less at the meal and you end up having longer periods before you get hungry again.
- 14:38So it is like a physical and mental Yes.
- 14:41Physical also.
- 14:42Yes.
- 14:42Exactly.
- 14:42Okay.
- 14:43Yes.
- 14:43So it works both ways.
- 14:44Okay.
- 14:45And it's dose dependent.
- 14:46So you start at a low dose and then we increase it up.
- 14:49The side effects are not always so beautiful, people don't talk about it, but nausea, queasiness, morning sickness.
- 14:56Is one extreme.
- 14:57The other extreme is vomiting.
- 14:58Like some people vomit all day, other people have diarrhea.
- 15:01And how long does that last for?
- 15:03Like your entire time, your body gets use of the dose and we don't increase their dose until they're like comfortable at the dose.
- 15:09Wow, okay.
- 15:10Yeah.
- 15:10So you know that they're effective, you know that it works.
- 15:13Yes.
- 15:13So now your patient's on it for three to six months and they, you're seeing weight loss.
- 15:18What do you, how do you maintain that?
- 15:20So a lot of people come in and they're like, I wanna lose this 15 pounds.
- 15:23And then once it's off, I promise I'll be able to keep it off.
- 15:25I just need to get this 15 pounds off.
- 15:26Because it's also to jumpstart.
- 15:27It's not just the 15 pounds, it's now their cholesterol has gone down.
- 15:30Yes.
- 15:31Now they're at a less of a risk of stroke and heart attack.
- 15:34Exactly.
- 15:34And maybe their diabetes is maybe under control.
- 15:36So like it's not just the weight.
- 15:38Yes, it is about the weight loss, but it also, like they have all these other health benefits.
- 15:42So those are the non-scale victories that we also talk about a lot, but.
- 15:46The first thing before we start is I say, this is a chronic medication.
- 15:50You are gonna have to be on this long term in order to continue to see the weight loss and maintain your weight.
- 15:57And I have tons of people who are like, no, I know myself.
- 15:59I know my body.
- 16:00I'm like, okay, this is what the studies are showing.
- 16:02And I use the example like when you have high blood pressure and your blood pressure medication has your blood pressure normalized, and now you're 120 over 80.
- 16:11Perfect.
- 16:12You don't come off the blood pressure medication.
- 16:14Yeah.
- 16:14You stay on it to maintain that healthy blood pressure.
- 16:16So there's nothing there that can, that you can take away from it and then be able to do on your own.
- 16:22I know.
- 16:22'cause I've heard that like people, it's, they're using it, or at least they're saying it as this is my goal.
- 16:27I'm gonna start it.
- 16:28It's gonna jumpstart me and then I'll be able to take over.
- 16:31Does that work in any instance?
- 16:32Or is it really just for It's just something like you're saying it's chronic, like you're gonna be honest.
- 16:37Once you take it, if you like the results, that's it.
- 16:40Yeah.
- 16:40So research is so new because they're newer medications.
- 16:44So different doctors or providers are doing different things.
- 16:47Yeah.
- 16:47So when my patient reaches their goal, I'll start by decreasing the dose back towards starting.
- 16:51And we stop when we start seeing weight gain.
- 16:53Or we spread out the interval.
- 16:56Instead of taking it every seven days, we'll do it every 10 days.
- 16:59Okay.
- 16:59And so none of us know right now what is gonna work, but it's patient by patient, so some people can get away with the lowest starting dose once a month and maintain their weight.
- 17:10Is it so new that we haven't seen any success getting off of it where people are able to keep the weight off?
- 17:16It's so new that the research study shows that you will gain the weight back if you come off of it.
- 17:21Interesting.
- 17:21Okay.
- 17:22Okay.
- 17:22So you're still currently playing around with dosing with myself and timing even with yourself.
- 17:27Yes.
- 17:27So now you are not an overweight or an obese person.
- 17:30And so now, but you were, when you started and I was postpartum.
- 17:34And you were postpartum.
- 17:35So postpartum, I had gained a hundred pounds in pregnancy, and this is from someone who studied nutrition and exercises, gained a hundred pounds.
- 17:44My body wanted to gain weight.
- 17:45We did it.
- 17:46I was left with a newborn and a body, which I didn't feel comfortable in or recognize.
- 17:52Luckily they were winter babies, so I could wear sweatpants.
- 17:54But you have two.
- 17:55I know, but still you have two girls, two little that.
- 17:56What did you gain the weight for with both of the pregnancies?
- 17:58Oh yeah.
- 17:59I went up and then down and then back up and then down.
- 18:01And then you're left with all the skin.
- 18:02Yep.
- 18:02So I started it even before that, I played around with weight loss medications in New York when I lived in New York City and worked at a weight management center there because I was like, I eat well, I exercise well.
- 18:17I have a family history of diabetes.
- 18:19If I look at cake, I gain weight like something else is going on.
- 18:23And so that's when my doctor introduced me to these medications.
- 18:26Was that in between pregnancies or was that before?
- 18:28Before, that was before I got married.
- 18:29Oh, okay.
- 18:29Yeah.
- 18:30Okay.
- 18:30So these weight loss drugs have been around then for a while?
- 18:32This, so I've been prescribing them since 2018.
- 18:35And weight loss meds have been around since the 1970s.
- 18:38Like phentermine, fen.
- 18:40Mm-hmm.
- 18:41More stimulant type have been around.
- 18:43But these GLP ones are newer to the market.
- 18:46Okay.
- 18:46So you started using GLP ones and it was insane, the change Pro, when did you start using them?
- 18:53Probably 2018.
- 18:542019.
- 18:54Wow.
- 18:55So this was before babies, this before babies before marriage.
- 18:59And I used to be the friend who could go out to Mexican with you guys and eat my plate and then eat your plate in your plate.
- 19:05But I was going to Barry's bootcamp at the time so my weight would stay the same when I took this medication and I didn't even finish my own plate.
- 19:12I was like.
- 19:13Game changer.
- 19:14Like I've never felt this before.
- 19:16I've never experienced this before.
- 19:17And it's just so eye-opening for people who suffered for so long and that's why it's changing the environment.
- 19:28So do you have girls come in, or I should say men too, that are not obese, but just wanna control their weight?
- 19:35So insurance is the tricky thing because these medications are approved for weight loss.
- 19:40If you are overweight and have a comorbidity, like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or if you're obese, and that's through BMI and other parameters.
- 19:49So if a normal weight woman comes in and she wants to lose weight, I would not offer this medication.
- 19:57If a normal weight man who is training for a marathon and just wants to shred 10 pounds, this isn't the right medication.
- 20:04And so that's why we have a consult first.
- 20:07And that's also why these compounding medications are dangerous.
- 20:10'cause you can subscribe.
- 20:11To a website and get the medication without a full medical history without doing all the blood work.
- 20:17So that's where you have to figure out the right person, because you are an expert, and I don't like this, I'm, I don't know, I don't like how I'm going to say this, but I don't know how it, how else to say it, but people are coming to you and getting it prescribed the right way, because they need it.
- 20:32Medically, how is this so rampant then?
- 20:36Like, how is this all over the place?
- 20:38Like how, why is everybody that I know on this medication, like, where is it coming from otherwise then?
- 20:43So it's a huge money maker, right?
- 20:45So people took these brand name medications, scientists compounded them and reformulated them into compounded vials.
- 20:54And all these medical spas are.
- 20:56Prescribing or cell or injection, how are they access to these?
- 20:59Like, how is this happening?
- 21:00Because the patients just have to know it's not an f FDA approved source.
- 21:04So similar.
- 21:05So this is something that somebody really could get their hands on if they're like a med spa, if they're in that absolutely.
- 21:09Field, like they can.
- 21:10So other people can get their hands on this and they may very well work.
- 21:13And I tell my patients, listen, if insurance isn't gonna cover it, go to a reputable place that, other people have had success with.
- 21:20I wouldn't buy it off the black market, I wouldn't buy it online.
- 21:23But if you have people with success, ask'em their success rate, look at the research, make sure they tell you the side effects, the warnings, the contraindications, but then how are these people who are giving this?
- 21:34And this is not to shade any of those people, but how are they monitoring this in a safe way?
- 21:40So I'm not sure how often they they see these patients, right?
- 21:43I like to see my patients once every three months in person and then we speak once a month.
- 21:48So I'm guessing the check-ins are they weigh-ins?
- 21:51Are you doing blood work or so what kinds of things are you doing?
- 21:54When they start with me, we'll do blood work.
- 21:56We'll look at cholesterol, we'll look at blood sugar, thyroid, insulin resistance, which is a big one with women who are like postmenopausal or on certain medications and like blood counts, metabolic panel.
- 22:07I do it all just so we have a baseline.
- 22:10And then studies have shown that after you lose 10% of your body weight, so if you're 150 pound woman, 15 pounds, you're gonna start seeing these health benefits.
- 22:19So after about six months or so, I'll reorder these panels and see what's happening.
- 22:23If at any point the patient feels stomach pain, if the patient feels like intense constipation, you need to have a red flag because there are these warnings of gastric paralysis and all these lawsuits coming out.
- 22:36Now, if you're with a prescribing provider that knows these risks and follows you closely, none of.
- 22:43Should occur.
- 22:43So that, I think that's, I guess that from the outside,'cause I have not taken these so I didn't know how people go about finding that.
- 22:51I think that's a red flag and if you're thinking about taking something like that, I think it's great.
- 22:56But I think that, how do you go about getting this done correctly?
- 22:59So if you are somebody who just wants to quote unquote jumpstart your weight loss, or maybe you're not in that medical need of this medication, how can someone go about finding this safely?
- 23:11So I'd say everyone, the first person you can start with is your primary care provider.
- 23:16Okay.
- 23:16And they all should know this, everyone in the world knows this right now, but it also shows how desperate people are to lose weight that they would take as something that isn't safe for their body.
- 23:24Just to lose weight.
- 23:25And I think that now that this is becoming more of a thing where it is socially acceptable and everybody is talking about it.
- 23:31I think it's more so than it was maybe a year ago or two years ago.
- 23:35I think now people are.
- 23:37It's a little bit more known.
- 23:38Mm-hmm.
- 23:38And it's a little, maybe a little less shameful saying that you are right.
- 23:41Talking about it.
- 23:42But then that gets dangerous because then you just think oh, I know somebody who offers this.
- 23:47And you go to that person.
- 23:48Yes.
- 23:48Maybe without a referral or without knowing, you know that Yes.
- 23:52That it went well for some other people.
- 23:54And it starts to get a little scary that way.
- 23:56If everyone's offering it, there are risks associated with it.
- 24:00Yes.
- 24:00And maybe the dosing isn't correct.
- 24:03Some people get started on the highest dose.
- 24:05Right.
- 24:05And land in the ER with vomiting.
- 24:07So I think my question is, from an expert, I would wanna know what are the questions that you could ask?
- 24:14How could somebody go about asking for this in a safe way?
- 24:18'cause I think you don't wanna scare people off and say, that something bad is gonna happen.
- 24:22Yeah.
- 24:22But people need to be responsible using this.
- 24:24Right.
- 24:25I almost feel like kids and you're the parent and like you have to be like.
- 24:30A parent that's still firm and strict, but knows, okay, my kids are gonna drink.
- 24:35Yes.
- 24:35And they're 16.
- 24:36Yes.
- 24:36You know those access out there are looking for booze.
- 24:39Where do you start?
- 24:39So I'll share with you my, one of my good friends owns a med spa and she knows like I'm always hangry.
- 24:46And she was like, I feel like if you try the microdosing, it'll help with your hunger and you'll lose a few pounds.
- 24:51Let's try this.
- 24:52And I trust her.
- 24:53This is what she does.
- 24:54So I've tried it from her.
- 24:55And it does, it works.
- 24:56So I told you I tried it back in January.
- 24:58You had a good experience and I had a great experience with it.
- 25:00And that's a safe success for us.
- 25:01And I want it, and I wanna do it again.
- 25:03Yes.
- 25:03It's amazing.
- 25:04It's amazing because it does, it quiets the noise.
- 25:07And not necessarily, I'm not somebody that's oh my God, I can't eat a cheeseburger.
- 25:10I can't eat this.
- 25:11I don't have that kind of noise when I go to a football game or a baseball game.
- 25:14Yeah.
- 25:14It actually allows you to eat the cheeseburger.
- 25:16Mine is just more oh my God, my blood sugar shouldn't drop.
- 25:18I'm gonna be hungry more.
- 25:19I have to have purse snacks all the time.
- 25:22Maybe that's more anxiety than it really is like actual blood sugar.
- 25:26Yeah.
- 25:26But it helps with that.
- 25:28It does because it almost makes it go away.
- 25:31Christina's seen me, how many times do I need to have food with?
- 25:33Yeah, she really does.
- 25:34While we're recording, she really does.
- 25:35It's and it happens fast, anxious, hang, it comes on fast.
- 25:37Yeah.
- 25:37So the medication, because it's slowing down the rate foods leaving your stomach, your blood sugar spikes are not happening.
- 25:43Yeah.
- 25:44So it's steadying out your blood sugar.
- 25:45So that's why people feel so much better on it.
- 25:47You probably just feel like you're just in people a good spot all the time.
- 25:50So I don't, I can understand.
- 25:51I don't wanna like completely scare people away.
- 25:53No.
- 25:53Like my husband went to, his primary care physician for a check-in.
- 25:58And he was like.
- 26:00His cholesterol was a little high, his blood pressure was a little high.
- 26:03Like all of these indications were like a little high.
- 26:05So he asked his doctor about these drugs and she was like, hard stop.
- 26:09Absolutely not.
- 26:10No.
- 26:10And I was like, I don't feel like she should have just given you a hard no.
- 26:14I think she's afraid of them too.
- 26:16But I think that gets scary.
- 26:17And then that's when people go and they start looking for who can prescribe it.
- 26:21Yeah.
- 26:21There's online and there's the black market, and you're just desperate for these medications.
- 26:26And so that's where people can get into a lot of trouble.
- 26:28We don't know.
- 26:29I hate being like this, but now I feel like I'm an anxious person and a mom now.
- 26:34And so I feel like I'm always just like 10 steps ahead being what is gonna happen.
- 26:39Yeah.
- 26:39It's fun times in my brain, but I feel like it's one of those things where now it's gonna be.
- 26:44All over the place.
- 26:45And are people gonna mix it with something just to sell it for cheaper, to give it to, oh God, like that this is the road that this could go down.
- 26:53If this, it turns into buyer beware.
- 26:55Yes, it is a medication, yes, it is a drug just like opioid.
- 26:58Just like other dangerous things.
- 27:00Yes.
- 27:00And that, I think that's where my mind is going of okay, sometimes when things are too accessible then you're just not really thinking of like, where can I get this safely and where can I verify this and make sure, because now it's just all over the place and you're almost saturated in the thinking where you're like, some lawsuits are starting Yes.
- 27:17Against med spas against non FDA approved compounds, and you're finding them less and less.
- 27:23So hopefully it's gonna be more regulated, but it's also gonna be easier for the general population to get them correctly because of all the new indications.
- 27:31That would be great.
- 27:32Got it.
- 27:32I feel like that's like a positive thing, so you can only get it.
- 27:34Prescribed.
- 27:35If you have an indication, even if you had a pocket, like I couldn't come to you and say, I wanna go on a microdose of this.
- 27:42And I wanted to ask you what that meant.
- 27:44Yeah.
- 27:45Because it will help me regulate my blood sugar.
- 27:48So I would say that some providers will prescribe it.
- 27:56I've had patients come to me who have diarrhea all the time, and I'm in gi so I see diarrhea all the time.
- 28:02This medication slows down your GI tract.
- 28:04So naturally diarrhea might slow down.
- 28:06She's normal weight, but she wants to try this right now.
- 28:10It might be behind the scenes being researched for diarrhea, who knows?
- 28:14But it's not an FDA indication.
- 28:16So I What would you like look into first?
- 28:18Why do you have diarrhea?
- 28:19Yeah, so she would've had the colonoscopy, she would've had the stool studies.
- 28:22You're in gi so that makes her, that's Sal bowel syndrome with diarrhea.
- 28:26Same with PCOS infertility.
- 28:27A lot of these fertility centers are using the medications now to boost fertility.
- 28:32Interesting.
- 28:33The new indications, fatty liver disease, which pretty much everyone has, there's chronic kidney disease.
- 28:37So as it gets more and more widely distributed, the insurance companies have to catch up.
- 28:45And that's where our biggest, I always say the worst side effects is insurance.
- 28:48So maybe it'll be safer.
- 28:50Versus what the more accessible is more.
- 28:52In your opinion, who would be great candidates for this versus who would not be great candidates for this?
- 29:00So automatically there's black box warnings or contraindications.
- 29:03You cannot take this if you have a personal history of pancreatitis.
- 29:08Which is inflammation of your pancreas.
- 29:10Or if you have a family history of medullary thyroid cancer.
- 29:13Okay.
- 29:13Automatically cannot take it and don't say, when you say family history, is that like mother, father, mother, father?
- 29:19What does family history consist of?
- 29:20Grandmother, grandfather, like not my dad's sister's cousin's friend, but Okay.
- 29:24Family history.
- 29:25Okay.
- 29:25And if medullary a specific type of thyroid cancer is in your family history, your prescriber shouldn't even look at it.
- 29:32What if you don't know?
- 29:34So then you have to assume the risk and your provider has to document.
- 29:38Patient doesn't know.
- 29:39And why?
- 29:39Why medullary specific?
- 29:41'cause in research in mice specifically, they did see the thyroid receptor is associated with the GLP one.
- 29:49And in mice they saw that specific type of cell, I believe, grow.
- 29:53I don't quote me on this, but that type of cell was isolated is medullary thyroid cancer?
- 29:58Rare.
- 29:59An aggressive type.
- 29:59It's rare.
- 30:00It's a rare type.
- 30:01So you see like papillary and that's more common.
- 30:03People say I have hypothyroidism.
- 30:05Can I take it?
- 30:05Yes, you can take it.
- 30:06Okay.
- 30:06Hyperthyroidism.
- 30:07My mom has hypothyroidism.
- 30:09Thyroid issues aren't the problem.
- 30:10It's specifically medullary thyroid cancer.
- 30:13Okay.
- 30:13So I guess how important is it that a screening is done before you're on something like this?
- 30:19Extremely important.
- 30:20Okay.
- 30:21So you order like an ultrasound of people's thyroids.
- 30:24So if people, when I see them, if I do a physical exam and they have an enlarged thyroid, I might I check their thyroid level when I start with everyone.
- 30:32Another big one is lipase.
- 30:34So the pancreas is a big thing.
- 30:36So pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas.
- 30:39It can happen with people who drink alcohol.
- 30:41It can happen when you have your gallbladder removed.
- 30:43It can happen from certain medications.
- 30:45These medications have shown that it may cause pancreatitis.
- 30:48Okay.
- 30:49So if so, if you're predisposed to that.
- 30:50So if you've had it in the past, you shouldn't be on it.
- 30:54The way we could see it is patients call, they have significant stomach pain.
- 30:59If you're on a GLP one, your doctor needs to order a lipase to make sure that you don't have pancreatitis.
- 31:05Okay.
- 31:05When you discontinue the med, the pancreatitis goes away, but you cannot continue it and you can never go on it again.
- 31:11How does pancreatitis go away?
- 31:13So we use IV fluids, we use pain medications, but it's really discontinuing the offending agent, which in this case would be the GLP one and GLP one stay in your system for how long?
- 31:23So the dosing is once a week, so you'd have to think the half-life is at least several days.
- 31:30Okay.
- 31:30So if you've taken it in like May, and then you've having stomach pain in October or November later on that year?
- 31:38No, it's not related.
- 31:39No.
- 31:39But I still would never give it to you again, but never to, yeah.
- 31:42Wow.
- 31:43Okay.
- 31:43So that's if interesting, that's people that should not take this medication.
- 31:47And I, that's not, I guess my follow up.
- 31:49Yeah, that's a not a great candidate.
- 31:51What would you recommend as far as if I'm, I keep going back to the same question, but if you're, if they don't qualify to have somebody like you prescribe this for them.
- 32:00There's other medications that they can prescribe to them, right?
- 32:03So if they come in and they have the need to lose weight, they've tried diet, they've tried exercise, there are other FDA approved weight loss medications.
- 32:11But just that aren't in this category.
- 32:13That aren't in this category.
- 32:13Okay.
- 32:14And they don't work the same way, but people want, they want these medications.
- 32:17They come and asking specifically.
- 32:18Yes.
- 32:18They come in asking specifically.
- 32:20And so when there's a will, there's a way.
- 32:21And so would you recommend then maybe starting with your primary and getting a full kind of panel done and a baseline maybe to see if there is anything that could be missed before you start?
- 32:33Because if you go to a med spa Uhhuh, I guarantee you they're not sitting there and probably running your life.
- 32:39Like to prescribe you these medications.
- 32:41So I would first ask your doctor, do you feel comfortable talking about weight loss medications?
- 32:45Some of doctors don't want anything to do with it, or they don't believe in them or they all that.
- 32:50Then I would say, is there a medical weight management provider nearby that you can refer me to?
- 32:55Okay.
- 32:55And in our area we do have a few.
- 32:56I.
- 32:57Then once they get to the medical weight management provider, that's where the specialty comes in.
- 33:02Okay.
- 33:03Okay.
- 33:03So that would be like a good, that would be like the order that you would probably referred to.
- 33:07Yes.
- 33:07Feel comfortable doing that?
- 33:08Yeah.
- 33:09Okay.
- 33:09And then can you talk about people that would be great candidates for this maybe from your perspective?
- 33:15Yes.
- 33:15My favorite candidates are postmenopausal women.
- 33:19Patients who have gained weight from starting a medication like I mentioned before.
- 33:24Patients who eat well, exercise, but still can't get to a healthy body weight.
- 33:30The thing is they have to try themselves because it's in adjunct with weight management diet, exercise.
- 33:37So if I have a patient coming and they're sitting in front of me eating McDonald's, but losing weight on the scale, I'm not gonna continue prescribing you this because.
- 33:43You're not changing your, it's the lifestyle change that you're after.
- 33:46So that still means something.
- 33:48Okay.
- 33:49These patients remind you a little bit of yourself too because you were somebody who did work out, who did eat well.
- 33:55Yes.
- 33:55You had these tools and you still struggled And one of the weirdest thing is I find myself, when I talk to these patients, I get tears in my eyes sometimes because it's still like that personal.
- 34:05Yeah.
- 34:05Oh wow.
- 34:05That happened to me.
- 34:06Do you wanna talk about that a little bit?
- 34:08My weight?
- 34:09Yeah.
- 34:09Just about your journey and I guess how this ties into you because I think that's always very powerful when you have somebody who's somebody that you can talk to about these things.
- 34:18Just in addition to a medical professional.
- 34:21It's like nice when you have a full rounded somebody who just understands and can lend an ear and explain maybe they've been on the side of this.
- 34:29It's almost like a therapist in conjunction with Yeah.
- 34:32So if I have a patient that I can tell is skeptical of me.
- 34:35I will automatically be like, listen, this is a no judgmental zone.
- 34:38Like I had french fries dipped in a milkshake last night.
- 34:41Like I get their guard down.
- 34:43I let them know I'm human.
- 34:44I say I was overweight my entire childhood growing up.
- 34:47I show them a picture of myself.
- 34:49I tell them I get it, and I'll, try to just disarm them because a lot of people wear their weight as like a shield and it's their defense mechanism.
- 34:57And so first, if we can dismantle that,.
- 34:59So my history I mentioned a little bit is I just was overweight as a child.
- 35:05Did all the fad diets, got to a healthier weight, but was never thin by any means.
- 35:09I was always a little bit bigger than all of my friends.
- 35:11I was never comfortable in a bathing suit.
- 35:13I was never the girl at the like college parties wearing a bra, type of thing.
- 35:18And then I always wanted to be that girl.
- 35:20I feel like you were that girl.
- 35:22I feel like you are that girl.
- 35:24Like in my mind you are that girl.
- 35:26I mean I might've been that girl.
- 35:28Yeah.
- 35:28And then I met Nick and he was like, can you maybe not be that girl anymore?
- 35:31Can you get down off the bar?
- 35:33Can you?
- 35:33Yeah.
- 35:34Not so I never had that.
- 35:35Can you not be that girl?
- 35:36Because that girl's really annoying.
- 35:38Yeah.
- 35:38And so now I wear all these like crop tops and stuff.
- 35:41I never had that growing up.
- 35:42I feel like.
- 35:43I love that for you though.
- 35:44Thank you feel.
- 35:44I love that.
- 35:44Thank you.
- 35:45It's really fun getting dressed when you are comfortable with how you look.
- 35:48I love that you share it and you're not ashamed of it.
- 35:50You're like, I wanted to make a change, so I did.
- 35:53Yeah.
- 35:53Also I've.
- 35:54Non-disclosure.
- 35:55I've had a tummy tuck, I had those two children and I had my stomach stretched out, and I think I saw you at Bar and you were like, you look amazing.
- 36:02And I was like, I like threw down my pants.
- 36:03And I was like, look at my scar.
- 36:05Like I just got this done.
- 36:06The trans parent is amazing because I think that's important.
- 36:08Same with parenting.
- 36:09If you're pretending like everything's butterflies and rainbows, it's not the truth.
- 36:14And, but you can't connect with anybody like that.
- 36:16No.
- 36:17And I think as soon as I, you're just gonna push people away.
- 36:20Yes.
- 36:20You can be in your new crop top, but you're gonna be all by yourself.
- 36:23You're like unapproachable.
- 36:24It's not interesting.
- 36:25And not that I want you to have to gain a hundred pounds and have to have a tummy tuck to have a conversation with you, but you looked amazing that day.
- 36:32Yeah.
- 36:32And I wanted to be like, damn girl, you look good.
- 36:34And I wish I could say thanks.
- 36:36It's from exercise and eating less, but that's not the reality anymore.
- 36:39It's always, yeah.
- 36:39Appreciated if people are transparent with things, I we talk about you don't always have to share, like we've said that on this podcast.
- 36:47It's a fine line of it's nice when you can share but you don't have to share and over overshare.
- 36:52I don't have a little oversharing issues.
- 36:54We do too on here.
- 36:55You're sitting in our podcast room.
- 36:57We clearly have a lot to say.
- 36:59I think it's, I think it's a good thing for the future.
- 37:01Yeah.
- 37:01So that helped shape you to go into this field, obviously.
- 37:03So then I started college and I was still in the phase of dieting and I was like, I'm gonna be a nutrition major and I'm gonna learn the trick to being thin.
- 37:12So I started my nutrition major and I started really liking the medical side of it and learning about the disease states.
- 37:19And so I went that route and my mom always said to me like, you're gonna be on TV one day talking about losing weight and helping people lose weight.
- 37:27And I was just like, medical weight loss wasn't a thing then.
- 37:30There was no medical weight loss.
- 37:32And so being able to do this now is really nice.
- 37:34It I feel like it's such a good fit and I It is.
- 37:37It's my, because it's my life.
- 37:38Yeah.
- 37:38But it's also, you live and breathe it.
- 37:39Yes.
- 37:40Yeah.
- 37:40You can just feel that and it feels like you're somebody that, somebody could trust in this space.
- 37:46I hope so.
- 37:46It feels like that.
- 37:47It's a good feeling.
- 37:47You are feeling, you are a very trusting person.
- 37:49Like talking to you.
- 37:50I feel like it's talking to somebody that I've known forever.
- 37:52Because you're so open, you're so honest.
- 37:54Talking about your weight and like going down memory lane to when you were like a teenager.
- 37:58That's not like an easy thing to bring up.
- 38:01And you do this with your patients so they trust you instantly.
- 38:04You're helping people.
- 38:04Yeah.
- 38:05You don't want them to feel judged by you.
- 38:06You don't want anybody to feel judged by you.
- 38:08No.
- 38:09What is the fad now?
- 38:10Yeah.
- 38:10Healthy like the fad then.
- 38:12So the fad now is healthy.
- 38:13Yes.
- 38:14Have you ever seen those memes where it's eat whole foods, but also don't eat too much, but then don't have coconut oil, but also, so there is so many messages coming that I think the message now is less is more.
- 38:24Yes.
- 38:24So shopping the perimeter when my kids ask for a snack, my goal is okay, but it has to be from the refrigerator.
- 38:30We have our snack habits, I buy the mini muffins, I buy the fruit roll-ups.
- 38:33I think you'll feel better if you have X, Y, and Z.
- 38:36So that's the messaging.
- 38:37It's more about the feel less of the look.
- 38:39Yes.
- 38:40And I need to eat breakfast.
- 38:42I eat throughout the day and I think that's the best thing I've ever done for myself.
- 38:45Instead of starving yourself all day.
- 38:47And then overeating later.
- 38:48I think your kids need to see that, but need to see what you're eating.
- 38:52So it's not like snacking all day on Chex Mix and pretzels.
- 38:56It's understanding protein makes you.
- 38:59Full protein also gives you muscles like depending, like changing it to age appropriate talking about it.
- 39:05And Devin now will start, my daughter, she's five, will start saying this steak is gonna give me a lot of energy.
- 39:09And I'm like, it absolutely.
- 39:11Oh my gosh.
- 39:11So we finally have, I love that.
- 39:13Love that.
- 39:13I feel like I am jumping outta my seat because we've talked about how we struggle with the messaging.
- 39:20Yes.
- 39:21There's like healthy messaging, I think now more so than ever.
- 39:24But we don't know how the frick to talk to our kids about.
- 39:28Food in general without, we don't, it's like we don't wanna shame them.
- 39:32Yeah.
- 39:32We don't wanna guilt them and be like, two more bites, three more bites.
- 39:35Four more bites.
- 39:36'Cause we want them to have this like intuitive eating, but also it's very frustrating when they are like, I don't wanna eat this.
- 39:42I'm full.
- 39:42I'm like, no, you're not.
- 39:43I know you're not full.
- 39:45You only have one bite and you're gonna have snacks later.
- 39:47And we're worried that we're being pushy and the snacks aren't gonna give you good fuel and you have hockey practice.
- 39:52So we're in sync about energy and not the image.
- 39:55Yeah.
- 39:55But we don't know what to say.
- 39:57Yeah.
- 39:57And what I'm finding, because this is where I'm deeply struggling, is that the message I'm seeing right now, and again, this could be a trap with the algorithm, the message that is I'm seeing right now on how to talk to your kids is to not make food a big deal.
- 40:12Like you basically put, and I'm not gonna, you put the dessert on the plate, the parenting, and I'm not gonna shame the parenting experts, quote unquote, that are talking about this, but I could assume that people could put two and two together.
- 40:23It's all food is created equal.
- 40:25Put the cake with the apples and let them have at it.
- 40:29And you don't make a big deal about one.
- 40:31You don't say, oh, the apples are healthy, the cake is not healthy.
- 40:35That verbiage should not be used in the messaging from the parents.
- 40:40And I think that's bullshit.
- 40:42Like I think that's extremely dangerous because it's not the same.
- 40:46It is not the same.
- 40:48And so I think that it would be helpful growing up to share that information without making pressure on it.
- 40:55But how could you tell a kid that cake is the same as fruits and vegetables?
- 41:00How this is a big thing in my house because when I had kids, I was like, my kids are not gonna be obsessed with food.
- 41:05My kids are not gonna be obsessed with dessert.
- 41:07So I said, Brandon, we are putting the cookie on the plate.
- 41:10And he was like, this is insane.
- 41:12We're not doing this.
- 41:13I did it sometimes, but honestly, no.
- 41:15That's not gonna work.
- 41:16Yeah.
- 41:16So the biggest thing is food does not have a moral compass.
- 41:19There is not good food and bad food.
- 41:21Okay.
- 41:21Food does not do good things or do bad things.
- 41:24Food has a place in your diet at all times, but there's different foods for different things, so different foods for different things.
- 41:31Yes.
- 41:32Okay.
- 41:32I like that.
- 41:32So there's food for enjoyment.
- 41:34You go to a circus and you're having cotton candy that is nostalgic and environmental and you're enjoying it, then you're at a meal or you're watching a movie.
- 41:44Yes.
- 41:44And you're having popcorn.
- 41:45Exactly.
- 41:45Food for enjoyment.
- 41:46My kids will always say, can we watch a movie tonight?
- 41:48And I know it's yeah.
- 41:49'cause you want popcorn and candy, right?
- 41:50Yeah.
- 41:50But so there's that, and there's all of that, right?
- 41:52And then there's food for fuel, and that's the food that is proteins and fat.
- 41:57So cheese sticks.
- 41:59My kids like these beef jerky, there's food for fuel like that.
- 42:02Oh yeah.
- 42:02The chomps.
- 42:03Yeah.
- 42:04Yeah.
- 42:04That's great.
- 42:04And then there's just filler food that taste good.
- 42:06And you should really only have that if you've already had the.
- 42:09Fuel food.
- 42:10But it's hard with kids.
- 42:11So yes, there's days where my kids go from goldfish to pretzels to cookies, whatever, or snacking all day.
- 42:16But all you can do is be consistent in what you're eating in front of them, making sure they have a protein option every meal that they have.
- 42:24And you choose what goes into your house.
- 42:27They choose what they eat.
- 42:28Okay.
- 42:28So whatever's there, if I put out a plate of cut up peppers and cucumbers, when my kid has friends over, they're all going to it, as opposed to if I'm putting out chips and salsa.
- 42:37Because they'll go to that too.
- 42:38Yes.
- 42:39They'll go to both.
- 42:39If you put out pirate's, booty, they'll eat that.
- 42:41They'll, but when I'm cutting up a melon or I'm cutting up, I don't know how to cut a melon, but if I'm cutting up fruit or vegetables, my kids will come over to me and take it and start eating it because it's there and available.
- 42:51If you're eating it I'm just cutting it for the week and I leave it in the fridge, so if it's like exposure.
- 42:56If they're exposed to it.
- 42:57It's exposure.
- 42:58Yeah.
- 42:58And that's what you, so what you're doing is working.
- 43:00They are obsessed with dessert and they love dessert, but yeah, it's working.
- 43:04So then how do you to them about that then?
- 43:06Okay.
- 43:06With dessert, when it's dessert, if it has a name, this is dessert.
- 43:10This is we have this after meal, after the meal.
- 43:12This is for like the social part or the fun part or the sweet treat before we go to bed.
- 43:17Like I'm okay with it being that I'm not okay with it being an part of the plate.
- 43:21So since they were little, we've always fed them what we eat.
- 43:25And I know people listening are like, yeah, like my kid will only have mac and cheese.
- 43:29We just always did it.
- 43:30And some nights Dana will love the steak and Devin will say, gross and won't look at.
- 43:36She wants to have the dessert, she has to eat the meal.
- 43:39Okay.
- 43:39If you're hungry enough, you're gonna eat the meal.
- 43:41Like you cannot have the dessert if you're not gonna have the steak.
- 43:44Okay.
- 43:44So you, it's safe to the boundary.
- 43:47That's how you hold that boundary.
- 43:47I do.
- 43:47You're firm on, I don't like that.
- 43:48Dessert is bad, but I say you need to eat this first because, this is what's nutritious.
- 43:53Okay.
- 43:53Okay.
- 43:54I like say it's bad versus good, but this is what our dinner is.
- 43:56This is the Q why.
- 43:57So this is, there is no shame around food and there's no praise around food.
- 44:01Is that are you, I'm not like, oh, clean plate club.
- 44:04'Cause a lot of my patients come in and say, growing up we had to finish our food.
- 44:07We were so poor that we were shamed if we didn't enjoy and appreciate the food we had.
- 44:13So a lot of people gained weight that way and they never learned that intuitive eating.
- 44:17So they don't, my kids don't need to finish their plates.
- 44:19They need to at least taste it.
- 44:22It try it.
- 44:22At least try it.
- 44:23Yep.
- 44:23Or know that if you're not gonna try it, there's not gonna be a snack after dinner.
- 44:27Okay.
- 44:27I that because you're going to bed.
- 44:28In my mind, that is how I would like to operate.
- 44:31Yes.
- 44:31And I think I do most of the time operate that way.
- 44:33But then I hear this talk about noise, right?
- 44:36Like you hear the social media noise and the guilt and the shame around food messaging and all of this.
- 44:41And I'm like, I don't wanna be like sitting here screwing both of them up and how they have a relationship with food.
- 44:47So I'm trying to do the right thing.
- 44:49But then you feel like, yeah, but you wouldn't sit down to dinner with Raj and put a cookie and Skittles on your plate.
- 44:54No, it would not on your dinner.
- 44:55I heard that and I have heard it several times from several different platforms.
- 45:00It's, I'm like.
- 45:02What, like I actually wanna be somebody that comments on the thing, like what the actual f are you talking about?
- 45:07Like how I always come back to the data and it's like, where are the kids that had that sort of parenting now?
- 45:13And can you verify that they have a healthy relationship with food now?
- 45:18And that's also how you talk to them.
- 45:19That same kid who's not eating their salmon and green beans after dinner is like, mom, I'm hungry.
- 45:24I want a snack.
- 45:25And we'll say that's, that happens at my house all the day.
- 45:27So what?
- 45:27So what's a good message for that?
- 45:29Dinner was 15 minutes ago.
- 45:30Yeah.
- 45:30You told me you weren't hungry.
- 45:31There'll be breakfast in the morning.
- 45:33So that's it.
- 45:34And I get it.
- 45:35Oh, you seem mean.
- 45:36They're like, but we're hungry.
- 45:37If you were that hungry, you're gonna eat the plate and we'll leave the plate on the table for them.
- 45:40If you're hungry, great.
- 45:41Your salmon's waiting for you.
- 45:42So you offer the same thing from before.
- 45:44Okay.
- 45:46See, I, but they, yeah, that's hard.
- 45:47I'm struggling in this house right now because yesterday I made dinner at one o'clock.
- 45:51I grilled pork chops.
- 45:52I made couscous and then I made like a salad that nobody eats the salad except for me and Nick.
- 45:58We are the only ones that are eating the salad.
- 46:00Sometimes the girls eat it, but then it's okay, first wave, when they get off the bus, they're having something to eat.
- 46:06Then second wave before we go to practice.
- 46:09Third wave when we get home.
- 46:10Yeah.
- 46:10So I'm only eating once, so sometimes they're not always seeing me.
- 46:15You guys are busy reading.
- 46:16We can sit down as a family because they're three and five as like sports and stuff come in.
- 46:21It's gonna be tougher.
- 46:22But I don't know that life yet, growing up, I did sit down with a family.
- 46:26I guess by the time we've gotten to this point now, my boys are like pretty good.
- 46:29And they know what they're eaters.
- 46:30Yes.
- 46:31And if they're gonna gimme a hard time about it, I'm like, go to your room then I don't wanna hear about Yeah.
- 46:36Maybe build the foundation.
- 46:36They're a little, they're a little older.
- 46:37I also question myself, both of my kids are in the lower weight category.
- 46:41They're percentiles are third percent.
- 46:43And I wonder if I would have the same message for them if they were overweight.
- 46:48And that's what I, and I hope they never struggle with being overweight, but I wonder if I would be as lenient or Sure.
- 46:55Or have dessert or buying the minim.
- 46:57I wonder And I'll hopefully, we'll never know.
- 47:00But it's a hard life to be weight.
- 47:02Yeah.
- 47:02I it is.
- 47:03I, so I have four kids.
- 47:05They're all pretty much like.
- 47:07Decent.
- 47:07They're athletic too.
- 47:08They're athletic.
- 47:09My middle son is the best eater out of all of them.
- 47:11He eats in air quotes like the healthiest.
- 47:14Okay.
- 47:15And he, so when you say best, you mean healthiest?
- 47:16Not that he tries a variety.
- 47:17No.
- 47:18Like he eats the most of everything.
- 47:20Like he'll eat the steak, he'll eat the salad, he'll eat the co.
- 47:23He eats like how I want him to eat.
- 47:25I'm like, oh my God, you're such a strong Yes.
- 47:27He naturally gravitates towards good things.
- 47:28I'm such a strong boy.
- 47:29Like you're such a good eater.
- 47:31Yeah.
- 47:31And he outta all my kids is like the stockies.
- 47:33And he'll say to me like, mom, I'm fat.
- 47:36Like why am I so fat?
- 47:37And that's the genetics and metabolism, like it's not anything.
- 47:40Just keep doing what you're doing.
- 47:42In the end it's gonna work out.
- 47:43It's hard.
- 47:43I'm like hard told you at school that you are, you could tell them that you are healthy.
- 47:47And at that age she's door.
- 47:48Which we were just saying.
- 47:49He's at that age where you're becoming aware of your body.
- 47:52Yes.
- 47:52And maybe what you're putting in it and you're comparing and that honestly, that breaks my heart to even hear that on the outside because like you're saying, he's sitting there.
- 47:59Doing the right things.
- 48:00Right, Eating the correct way.
- 48:02And then his siblings are sitting there eating Skittles all the time and he's probably, yeah.
- 48:06We also shouldn't limit his food because if in your mind, if you're like, then I'll start giving him less so he doesn't need as much.
- 48:12He's gonna start sneaking food and then people, and then they get obese that way, I know.
- 48:16So what's gonna happen?
- 48:17Try, I try to limit his sweets.
- 48:20Okay.
- 48:20Like the sweets.
- 48:21Because sometimes he'll go overboard on the sweetss, like the other kids will graze through the meal and they'll go off to their sports.
- 48:28Vincent will eat his whole plate like a good, healthy boy.
- 48:31Yeah.
- 48:32And then he'll have, he'll want two or three ice creams.
- 48:35I'm like, can we maybe just have one ice cream?
- 48:38But then I don't wanna make it a thing because I know, like you said, he'll hard be sitting it in his room.
- 48:43Like after all that, will he ever be like, oh, I eat a little bit too much.
- 48:46I've never seen him do that.
- 48:47So I, he's like a bottomless pet, and now I'm like really oversharing?
- 48:52Now he's on, he has a DHD and now that it's school time.
- 48:56Yeah.
- 48:56He's on the A DHD medication and he, so you under eat during the day, so he won't eat as much during the day.
- 49:01So when I, he comes home and he's binging Spamish.
- 49:03I know it's because he hast eaten a thing the entire day.
- 49:07The food is tricky.
- 49:08It's so tricky.
- 49:09And we, and it all comes down to genetics.
- 49:10So if he's gonna be a stocky little boy, he's gonna be a stocky little boy.
- 49:13Yeah.
- 49:14And you're gonna love him.
- 49:15And that's him.
- 49:15He's not gonna have high cholesterol and diabetes because he is eating well.
- 49:19But if his body type is stockier go have fun at football.
- 49:21Embrace it.
- 49:22Yeah.
- 49:23I'm not like body positivity, obesity, I'm body positivity.
- 49:26This is what you have.
- 49:26Like this is your belt.
- 49:27This is your belt.
- 49:28Yeah.
- 49:28And I used to hate my whatever, insert my stomach, my butt, whatever I see on Dana.
- 49:33Dana has my butt.
- 49:34I love her little butt.
- 49:35But I ever want to.
- 49:36Talk to her.
- 49:37Like I used to talk to myself.
- 49:38I know.
- 49:39Now I know.
- 49:40It's, she's the cutest little butt in the world.
- 49:41When you become a parent, especially when you become a parent of girls, of a girl, you, it's crazy how your mind just shifts about how you think about yourself.
- 49:52I'm sure it could go to both extremes, where maybe you become harder on them if you're noticing something about yourself, Yeah.
- 50:00If you see like a correlation there, it's probably triggering, oh, absolutely.
- 50:04But it also makes you very sympathetic and it also makes you more aware of how you speak to yourself and how you think about things.
- 50:10And you didn't like this about yourself, but now it's on your kid and it's, it's hard.
- 50:14Parenting's hard and the food part of it, you hope doesn't become a thing.
- 50:19You want it just to be natural and you want it to be dinnertime.
- 50:22Kids let's have our chicken and broccoli and rice.
- 50:24But it's gonna become a thing.
- 50:26So you just have to be equipped how to deal with it.
- 50:27And the best thing I could say is never call a food good or bad.
- 50:30Okay.
- 50:31I like that advice.
- 50:32Food, good or bad.
- 50:32I like that a lot.
- 50:33And you are not good or bad for eating said food, right?
- 50:36Like patients come in and say, oh, I was so bad yesterday.
- 50:38Yes.
- 50:39I was like, did you rob a bank?
- 50:40And they're like, no, I had ice cream.
- 50:41And I'm like, no.
- 50:42Walk out the door.
- 50:43Yeah.
- 50:43So you gotta talk to yourself like food is food, you mess up, you start over tomorrow.
- 50:48But it doesn't have to even be mess up.
- 50:50You're right.
- 50:51Absolutely.
- 50:52You mess up in your mind.
- 50:53You mess up in your mind.
- 50:54You didn't follow your prescribed perfect plan in your mind.
- 50:57I'm a failure, you, ooh.
- 51:00I shouldn't have had those m and ms as I walked upstairs last night for bed.
- 51:03I'm a failure.
- 51:04Tomorrow morning you wake up, you don't skip breakfast to make up for it.
- 51:08Those calories you start and you have your eggs and you have your toast and you go it's a reset.
- 51:14Yes.
- 51:14And that's part of what the medical weight management.
- 51:17Practice does is because it's reframing, it's psychological medical, it's a whole new field that we're learning about.
- 51:24And these medications are a great tool for that.
- 51:26I love, so my mom grew up poor.
- 51:28They were like immigrants from Italy and they grew up poor.
- 51:31So I wanted to eat like the snack wells.
- 51:34I wanted a Lunchable, I wanted to buy lunch.
- 51:36And she was like, the processed food.
- 51:38No.
- 51:38You cannot eat that.
- 51:39That is crap.
- 51:41And part of it was a, it was how she was raised because that other stuff cost money.
- 51:45Whereas like the garden was essentially free.
- 51:47Yeah.
- 51:47And B, it was like, she would call it crap.
- 51:50It was never like she was ahead of the game for weight loss it was never like for aesthetics purposes, she was like.
- 51:56No, this is actual shit.
- 51:58Crap.
- 51:58You are not eating this.
- 51:59You have to eat this.
- 52:01But that's how you, and that was what was available and that's what you like now, right?
- 52:03But I feel like I rebelled a little bit.
- 52:05'Cause I was like, when I become a mom, I'm gonna give my kids chips and snacks and this and that, and I'm gonna, I'm not saying it a big deal and I'm gonna do all the things.
- 52:14And then I'm like, oh my God, they're absolute monster terrors when they eat this stuff.
- 52:18Like food really does affect I just prescribed the Thrive Market.
- 52:21Have you ever heard of Thrive Market?
- 52:22Yes.
- 52:23Oh I just prescribed it and I'm gonna be like, does Red 40 really do anything?
- 52:27I don't know.
- 52:27And I'm not an expert, but I'm trying the Oreos from Thrive Market instead of the grocery store and Right.
- 52:32I'll let you know if it works, but you can report back to us.
- 52:34But t do you feel like with that messaging being shared from your mom, do you feel like you have an unhealthy relationship with food?
- 52:42I feel like no.
- 52:42It's like she's a good one.
- 52:43She I have a really good relationship with food.
- 52:45Yeah.
- 52:45Don't think it did any damage.
- 52:47I think it was like probably one of the best things that she could have done for me.
- 52:51And parents should put so much blame on themselves, do the best.
- 52:53You We're all doing the best we can.
- 52:54With everything with parenting.
- 52:56Yes.
- 52:56So this is just another part of it.
- 52:57Yes.
- 52:58I love that.
- 52:58Yeah.
- 52:58It's turned into a parenting podcast again.
- 53:00I know.
- 53:00We, it always does.
- 53:01It always circles back because I always like to come at everything from all the moms that are listening in.
- 53:06Mm-hmm.
- 53:07And just relating it back to that in a way, if we took the roof off of all of our house, the same shit is going on at our house.
- 53:13Oh, yep.
- 53:13At the same time.
- 53:15Or your daughter was yelling at you?
- 53:16Maybe not at four.
- 53:17Mine was the night before, but she called me like, I feel like all of our kids won't sleep in their own beds.
- 53:22They don't wanna go to sleep at night.
- 53:24Then they're gonna grow up and they're gonna have a husband.
- 53:25Then they're gonna wanna sleep in their own room and like Dev, I'll go in your bed like, you can sleep with Brandon.
- 53:31I'll go in your bed.
- 53:31You're delightful.
- 53:33We all have such similar things going on.
- 53:35Yep.
- 53:36And we don't all have the answers.
- 53:37Sometimes things work, sometimes these don't work and we don't all talk about it, which is we don't all talk about our weight.
- 53:41We exactly need to.
- 53:42Yes.
- 53:44No one wants to be friends with a thin girl at the table who says no to bread, and you don't know why.
- 53:48It's'cause you're on ozempic, right?
- 53:50That's why.
- 53:51But sometimes these medicines let you do it.
- 53:54So it's the first time in my life that I can have the bread basket and not worry about gaining weight, right?
- 53:59I used to weigh myself every day and I was like, oh, it went up a pound.
- 54:03Oh, I really shouldn't have had that peanut butter on the apple.
- 54:06That doesn't matter.
- 54:06Now, I tell my patients once a week, every time, the same week, once a week.
- 54:11And if it's gonna mess with your head, don't ever do it.
- 54:13And just do it here.
- 54:14Turn around.
- 54:15So some, sometimes that measuring is like unhealthy barometer, right?
- 54:18For people's success scale victories are great.
- 54:21One thing, non-scale victories are better, right?
- 54:24And we talked about those earlier, about lowering your cholesterol, all those other health benefits.
- 54:28But also the grandma who can now run around with her grandkids or the person who loves to travel, but never would because the airplane seat belt didn't fit them.
- 54:37Those are non-scale victories.
- 54:38Love having a, the reunion coming up and feeling comfortable going,'cause you missed 20 and 25 because you felt overweight.
- 54:44Oh.
- 54:44So like the, those are great.
- 54:45I love that term.
- 54:46Non-scale victory.
- 54:47And they're big ones.
- 54:48Like their knees don't hurt, they don't need to get knee replacements surgery anymore.
- 54:52Nick said for every pound you lose is 15 pounds off your knee.
- 54:56Mm-hmm.
- 54:56Or some like crazy.
- 54:57I'll give equation people a 15 pound weight and I'll be like, you were carrying that around for your whole life.
- 55:03And now they're like, wow.
- 55:04Yeah, I like that because then I, again, it goes back to what we were talking about the beginning of the episode where.
- 55:10There shouldn't be shame in wanting to change something about yourself if you feel like you need to.
- 55:17And I don't mean that from a look perspective as much as, I mean from a within perspective.
- 55:22Yes.
- 55:22And I like correlating it to this non-scale victory because you know you're gonna feel better and it impacts your day to day when you're feeling good about yourself going to the beach with your kids.
- 55:32Yes.
- 55:32And feeling comfortable in the bathing suit and building the sandcastle.
- 55:35Yes.
- 55:35Instead of wrap, being wrapped up and worrying about things.
- 55:38Yes.
- 55:38Like it is.
- 55:39So I love correlating that to the non-scale victories.
- 55:42Sometimes if you do things to better yourself, you feel better, and then you live your life better, yes.
- 55:48And you're a happier person when you feel good about yourself.
- 55:51And that's not, doesn't mean you're wearing a size four jeans.
- 55:53It just means you're doing everything in your power to make yourself better and to feel better.
- 55:57There shouldn't be shame in that.
- 55:58No.
- 55:58And you should share how you do it for other people so other people can do it.
- 56:02I love that.
- 56:03That's a great message to end with.
- 56:05Yeah, I love that.
- 56:06I don't know how we could have gotten, I feel like we squeezed all of our questions.
- 56:09This was great.
- 56:10Thank you so much for sharing.
- 56:12We're gonna close our episode with our pink spotlight.
- 56:16And our pink spotlight is a person, place thing, tip, mantra.
- 56:20Anything that we're doing to make either life a little bit better, or for t and i, it's the week a little bit better.
- 56:25So yeah.
- 56:26Do you wanna start out, Steph, do you have one that you can share?
- 56:28So I've been thinking about this for weeks.
- 56:29Oh my God.
- 56:30Since I was asked to be on the SI was like, what's my pink spotlight?
- 56:32So today my pink spotlight is my sister and I were in Cape Cod this summer.
- 56:36Mm-hmm.
- 56:37And we were walking around Chatham and they had these charm bars set up and you could make your own bracelet, your own necklace.
- 56:42And they had.
- 56:43Like religious affiliations and letters and animals.
- 56:46So we created these charms and I'm wearing one today that has like a beach and my horoscope and a ladybug.
- 56:51And so my sister was like, this is amazing.
- 56:53We need to start doing this.
- 56:54And she recently we started charmed.
- 56:58I love it.
- 56:58H-A-R-M-D-I love it.
- 57:00D is for our mother.
- 57:01Aw.
- 57:01And we'll be having parties around the area.
- 57:03So fun.
- 57:04Yeah.
- 57:04So I'm wearing a necklace and I, oh my God, I love this.
- 57:07Oh my God.
- 57:08Where can little, where can our listeners find you?
- 57:10So it's charmed by dd.
- 57:13Okay, perfect.
- 57:13And you guys, you said you were booking parties, like if somebody was having a birthday party or like a girl's party, you'll set up off to the side and people that's, and they can custom make stuff.
- 57:21Oh, kids size bracelets with the little Taylor Swift.
- 57:24I love it.
- 57:24Cowboy boots is, this could be keeper is the price point.
- 57:27Don.
- 57:27It's real.
- 57:28So they're 18 karat gold filled.
- 57:29It's not a fine jewelry line, but they're fun to mix and match.
- 57:32So I'd say the bracelets are around like.
- 57:34$30 and then each charm is like seven to 10.
- 57:37I love it.
- 57:37So it's a very good price point.
- 57:38Yes.
- 57:39And they look, they're fun.
- 57:40I love it.
- 57:40They're beautiful.
- 57:41I love it.
- 57:41Like change.
- 57:42And I like fun.
- 57:43That you like can tailor it to Yes.
- 57:45I know.
- 57:45'cause I feel like I'm all about like the customization of things and I feel like that's just really fun.
- 57:50Yes.
- 57:50I just thought it look so cute on all the Cape Cod girls and I was like, I need to do this.
- 57:53Oh, what a good idea.
- 57:54I love that.
- 57:55And I love when people lean into their creativity.
- 57:57Yes.
- 57:58That's all Emily.
- 57:58But like you said, your sister Emily, she's great, is very creative.
- 58:00She loves creating things and making things for people.
- 58:03And and this is cool.
- 58:04I feel like this is just another example of having an idea, putting it out there I'm surpris, I'm shocked do, she's putting it to fruition.
- 58:10I love for her.
- 58:11Yeah, I was say Emily, I support you.
- 58:13I do not wanna be a part of any of the admin.
- 58:15I Oh no, I think you're gonna help her.
- 58:17You're gonna help her.
- 58:18You're gonna help her go to all the parties.
- 58:19I would love to help her behind this.
- 58:21Behind the scenes.
- 58:22Yeah, Christina does jewelry.
- 58:23I know.
- 58:23I would love, that's I know like a little collaboration.
- 58:25She has a charm on now.
- 58:26That's what made me think of it.
- 58:27That's beautiful.
- 58:28I have a little tennis track.
- 58:29I love that.
- 58:30Perfect.
- 58:30And a got piece for my tennis team.
- 58:31Perfect.
- 58:32Aren't they cute?
- 58:33It's beautiful.
- 58:34I love that.
- 58:34And I love that.
- 58:35That's something that's like coming back.
- 58:36Where I feel like when we were growing up, it was what did we have?
- 58:39I feel like, why am I blanking on the Pandora bracelet?
- 58:41Pandora, you would just have stuff that you would like.
- 58:44Alex and Ani bracelets were huge in college.
- 58:47The charm was a big one.
- 58:48Yeah.
- 58:48Like where it's like you build your collection around things that matter to you and I feel like this is fun.
- 58:52Or just a good old fashioned like charm necklace.
- 58:54Yes.
- 58:55Or if your kid's going to have her recital, you'll get her like an extra belly charm to add.
- 58:59Like you can add things.
- 58:59So it's fun.
- 59:00That's really fun.
- 59:01Okay.
- 59:01That's adorable.
- 59:02I love that video.
- 59:02I love that great pink spotlight.
- 59:03Thank you for sharing us.
- 59:04What about you?
- 59:05So I just started putting out all my pumpkins and Fall girl, which inspired me is that I am a huge Mackenzie child.
- 59:12You are.
- 59:12Oh, you're girl.
- 59:13I walked in.
- 59:14I know.
- 59:14I'm a huge Mackenzie child collector.
- 59:16And I that's been my go-to for gifts for you love.
- 59:19I'm gonna give you a little backstory.
- 59:20So when Joseph was born, I think he was like.
- 59:23Three or four months old, I started collecting Mackenzie Child and I would go down the only store in Connecticut at the time, other than Lux Bond and Green, which only had the black and white check was Middlebury Consignments.
- 59:35My girlfriend Vanessa and I would drive down to Middlebury and we would like, there was a little cafe there and we would get like one piece, we would pick it out.
- 59:42'cause everything is hand painted.
- 59:43So we would pick out the one we wanted.
- 59:45And we met the owners of the store, Dean and Rachel, who are our age, who had just had a baby.
- 59:50And we, they are best friends, they have four kids.
- 59:53So we've been friends now with them for over 12 years.
- 59:55And so I love to get all my pieces at her store and I still now I, you're so Maddy down there, I get like one at a time.
- 1:00:02Yeah.
- 1:00:02'cause it's like a keepsake.
- 1:00:03It's like a nice, yeah, it's like special and they're expensive pieces, but I'll get they have great gifts too though.
- 1:00:08They're like such a nice gift to Reese.
- 1:00:09Have spoon to get, yeah.
- 1:00:11It goes with every, it's great, but I just, you're the, you like the black and white jack.
- 1:00:15She has the pink and white, right?
- 1:00:16Yeah, I have the ster.
- 1:00:17I like the sterling, which is like the pretty gray.
- 1:00:20Yep.
- 1:00:20I'll sh I'll post pictures.
- 1:00:21I just got the pumpkins are really cute.
- 1:00:23I just got a sterling pumpkin.
- 1:00:24I have the green in my bar downstairs.
- 1:00:25What about the pink, pink green pinks right here.
- 1:00:27I know what pink is right here.
- 1:00:28I just got a pink.
- 1:00:29The girls have a butterfly.
- 1:00:30The butterfly ones.
- 1:00:31I see that in there.
- 1:00:32I love the picture as a gift that I have.
- 1:00:34I like the floral one.
- 1:00:35That was like I don't know if that was limited edition, but I like, like the floral one for my stuff outside.
- 1:00:39They make a little kids' tea set.
- 1:00:40They, I, oh, we have tea set.
- 1:00:42My friend Ally has it for a girls.
- 1:00:43I love it.
- 1:00:44We have the tea set, but I love Mackenzie Childs and if you are in Connecticut, you should go down to, and actually, I think that they changed the name of their store.
- 1:00:52I don't think that they're like Middlebury consignment anymore.
- 1:00:55Yeah, I just wanted just Middlebury Furniture.
- 1:00:57Middlebury Furniture and Home Design.
- 1:00:58They have a 40,000 square foot.
- 1:01:00Warehouse and they moved the gift shop to there.
- 1:01:03Yeah.
- 1:01:03Their gift shop is out of this world.
- 1:01:05If you wanna just go down and just tell my sister and I'll take a ride.
- 1:01:07Yeah.
- 1:01:07Oh my.
- 1:01:08And they have a vineyard across the street.
- 1:01:09But anyways I'm in my fall Mackenzie Child era.
- 1:01:12Yeah.
- 1:01:12'cause that's when you typically bring out a lot of the stuff.
- 1:01:14Yes.
- 1:01:15'cause my the pumpkins are my pumpkin favorite pumpkin.
- 1:01:16Yeah.
- 1:01:17I know.
- 1:01:17I just saw somebody unboxing a bunch of those and I was like, those are so pretty.
- 1:01:20That's an investment I keep wanting to do.
- 1:01:21I know.
- 1:01:21I'm like at Home Goods getting the plastic ones, but one day I'll do that.
- 1:01:24Oh, they're beautiful.
- 1:01:25I love it.
- 1:01:26One a year.
- 1:01:28One a year.
- 1:01:28Yeah.
- 1:01:28But it's, yeah.
- 1:01:28But now you, but over time it's like you start to build a little collection.
- 1:01:32Yeah.
- 1:01:32And that's so nice.
- 1:01:33And I love that the stuff, it's just the same pattern, so you just keep adding Yeah.
- 1:01:37It doesn't look old.
- 1:01:38It's like very timeless looking.
- 1:01:39Yeah.
- 1:01:40So there you have it.
- 1:01:40I love it.
- 1:01:41So mine this week is I have been on a rebuying denim kick.
- 1:01:47Oh.
- 1:01:47Because for the first time in four or five years, I am a consistent size and I thought this was a appropriate place to share this because I've been postpartum out post just like all over the place.
- 1:01:59And so now I have a consistent size.
- 1:02:01So I've been rebuying my denim and I am obsessed with the pair that I'm wearing right now because I went back to investing in some denim pieces because I finally feel like, okay, I'm a consistent size, so this makes sense to do it now.
- 1:02:16So I have a pair of mother denim, I believe these are called the Rambler, and I don't know if I've just been out of the denim world for so long.
- 1:02:22They're great, but things are like stretchy, but keep the shape.
- 1:02:26Now they look like the Levi, the main one today.
- 1:02:28Yes.
- 1:02:29Are those mother?
- 1:02:29Mother?
- 1:02:30These are mother.
- 1:02:30I bought them for my sister, but I bought them for myself this morning.
- 1:02:34And they are an investment.
- 1:02:35Yes.
- 1:02:35But.
- 1:02:36They always will look good.
- 1:02:37Yes.
- 1:02:38And they keep their form.
- 1:02:39I've always been like in love with denim, like I'm a denim girl.
- 1:02:42But then when I just, I was either like pregnant or postpartum mm-hmm.
- 1:02:46and wearing leggings and so I was really like, out of the jean came for a really long time, think time.
- 1:02:50Very expensive.
- 1:02:51Over years.
- 1:02:51I think they did this.
- 1:02:52So first of all, the prices shot through the roof.
- 1:02:54Like ag used to be like one 10, everything went up.
- 1:02:56Like mother at least$50.
- 1:02:5850.
- 1:02:58Yeah.
- 1:02:59They used to be 200 and now they're two 50.
- 1:03:01So it, again, it was not the time to invest in those pieces.
- 1:03:05'cause I was like, I can't even stay a consistent size right now.
- 1:03:07But I feel like the stretchy jeans that we used to wear, yes.
- 1:03:12The jegging five plus years ago used to lose their shape a lot more.
- 1:03:15Yes.
- 1:03:15And then I feel like then the rigid styles became a little bit more what you wanted not comfortable for because you could, like they do have a time and a place like they suck you in.
- 1:03:23Yes.
- 1:03:23You feel like they, you get a little bit more shape maybe with them, but you cannot stay in them all day long.
- 1:03:29No, those you could wear day, all day.
- 1:03:31So now I feel like I'm like reentering denim and wearing denim and I'm like, wait a minute, where did you get them Locally?
- 1:03:37I get, I bought these from Revolve.
- 1:03:39I had gone into anthropology.
- 1:03:41About a month and a half ago and I did another denim, like I went, I was looking for a different pair of denim and that kind of started me off where I was like in there actually trying on jeans and I tried these on, but a different wash.
- 1:03:52And so I knew that they fit and I was like, okay, if I see a different wash somewhere else I'll buy those too.
- 1:03:57And so I had already tried them on.
- 1:03:59So I feel like my first pink spotlight,'cause I had shared that I went into the store and actually tried on Cho in stores.
- 1:04:05I think online is wonderful, but oh my god, going in and trying on jeans, I find myself at the mall.
- 1:04:10All the sees you the headache time.
- 1:04:11Yes.
- 1:04:12So that was huge for me was like finding the size and the style and like the brands that work.
- 1:04:18And trying them on and having fun with that.
- 1:04:20But then now that I know my size and a couple different brands, I'm like reordering things and I'm like, wow, okay.
- 1:04:25So even in five years things have improved and I am wearing these jeans and I will not take them off.
- 1:04:30I put them on first thing this morning, like before the kids got up, be in them all day long.
- 1:04:36Like what?
- 1:04:37Like usually I can't get out of them fast enough.
- 1:04:40Like when I come in it's like we do not wear jeans inside.
- 1:04:42And now I'm actually like, the jeans are like sweatpants now.
- 1:04:45I like they're more comfortable than some of my sweatpants.
- 1:04:48Okay.
- 1:04:49I love that.
- 1:04:49That's a stretch.
- 1:04:49So in just like shameless plugin Avon, there's a store Coco Lily.
- 1:04:53And she sells mother jeans there.
- 1:04:54I was gonna say Kimberly Boutique in West Har.
- 1:04:56They do.
- 1:04:56So Nordstrom has it.
- 1:04:57Yeah.
- 1:04:57It's nice to be able to go locally.
- 1:05:00And try on jeans.
- 1:05:01I love trying on.
- 1:05:01Yes.
- 1:05:02I feel like jeans are one of those things where you need to and I feel like with ordering, how many jeans are you gonna order at 250?
- 1:05:08The jeans in the same wash looks so different On different, yes.
- 1:05:11That's a good wash.
- 1:05:12It's so true.
- 1:05:12Same thing.
- 1:05:13Medium wash.
- 1:05:13So which one is that?
- 1:05:15What style is it?
- 1:05:15This is the ankle pipe jeans.
- 1:05:18The jeans pipe.
- 1:05:19Those are cute.
- 1:05:19I like those too.
- 1:05:20I love those because I'm like not so tall, but I could wear'em with all shoes.
- 1:05:24I love those.
- 1:05:24Yes.
- 1:05:24That's what I got these,'cause mine hit at the ankle.
- 1:05:26When I'm standing and there's, I can actually wear them with like boots.
- 1:05:30I can wear them with flats, with heels.
- 1:05:32It's that's why when you make an investment in jeans, make sure it's something that you can wear with a lot of different things.
- 1:05:37That's, you just gotta pull the trigger.
- 1:05:39You gotta just do it.
- 1:05:40But yeah.
- 1:05:40But then you won't buy another pair for a while.
- 1:05:42That's why I feel like I'm like, or I could buy a bunch of different kinds and I'm still not happy or invest in these trends.
- 1:05:47I go to the same too.
- 1:05:48Anyway, I feel like this trends, like I love a wide leg right now, but they might go out, so I might go to Gap or somewhere quick and stuff.
- 1:05:55But like staple pans that you like always can go grab.
- 1:05:58I agree with you.
- 1:05:59Yeah.
- 1:05:59So that was, I wanna be a wide leg jean garage.
- 1:06:02I love a pair of brown ones from Zara.
- 1:06:04And I wanna, we need to Zara here, you can do anything.
- 1:06:06Get us a Zara.
- 1:06:07I cannot on Zara feel like I'm too a short for them.
- 1:06:12You're not a tailor.
- 1:06:13Growing up my mom would bring us to the tailor there.
- 1:06:16Nothing.
- 1:06:16Think sometimes they can be elong, maybe need to bring them to the tailor.
- 1:06:18Yeah.
- 1:06:19I try, you know what, I didn't, I boxed them up and I was gonna return them, but I've been driving around with a box for two weeks.
- 1:06:24'Cause I'm like, no, I think maybe Spanx makes a really spank.
- 1:06:29I try, I want a brown pair and they look and feel so good.
- 1:06:34Spanx.
- 1:06:34I could bring mine over for you to try because I have them, I and I love them.
- 1:06:37Those, that's a good recommendation.
- 1:06:38Spanx for wide leg.
- 1:06:39Spanx, if you're like on the fence because they hug you and all the way know a jean.
- 1:06:43Yes.
- 1:06:44But they're like a fake gene.
- 1:06:45It's like a chino denim.
- 1:06:45Yes.
- 1:06:46Like a navy that's want to work and stuff.
- 1:06:49Yep.
- 1:06:49They have brown, they have black.
- 1:06:50Yep.
- 1:06:50They're just like, they look really good on heels.
- 1:06:52I'm in my brown era.
- 1:06:53Hug.
- 1:06:55Same.
- 1:06:55I love brown.

- 1:07:14What to know what they're talking about or they think they do or they're sharing some, they're not sharing the whole story.
