- 0:00Hello, welcome to Chatting with Cara.
- 0:02I'm Cara, your compassionate life coach, relationship with
- 0:05food specialist, and I'm here to help you understand yourself a
- 0:09little bit better each week. However you found your way here
- 0:13today, I'm glad you're listening.
- 0:14Maybe your friend sent you this episode.
- 0:16Maybe you've been with me from the start, or maybe you're just
- 0:19curious about doing things differently when it comes to
- 0:22food, your body, and how you feel about yourself.
- 0:25Whatever brought you here, you're in the right place.
- 0:28Here's what I do on the show. I have honest, kind
- 0:31conversations about the stuff that's actually holding you
- 0:34back. Not the surface level stuff, the
- 0:36deep stuff, the root causes. Because when you truly
- 0:40understand why you think and feel the way you do, then
- 0:44everything starts to change. It doesn't feel hard anymore, it
- 0:47just feels natural. So get comfortable, make
- 0:50yourself a group, and let's have a proper chat about the things
- 0:53that matter. This is chatting with Garba.
- 0:57Start solving the right problem. Oh yes, today's episode is a
- 1:03good one. And I think it's really going to
- 1:05resonate with you because you are the smart lady.
- 1:09You are. If you're anything like me,
- 1:11which I know you are, you are like, you are like started.
- 1:16Well, how many seconds? We had 21 seconds.
- 1:19I've already said something wrong.
- 1:22Let's start again. You are like me and you are a
- 1:25high performer. You are a type A girly.
- 1:29You like a good task, you like to tick things off and you like
- 1:33to be in control. You like to get stuff done, get
- 1:37stuff done efficiently, quickly and with minimal faffing.
- 1:42Although I do like a faff sometime, but a planned faff.
- 1:47But this also comes with some perfectionist tendencies.
- 1:53And this is what I see quite a lot with women, that they go,
- 1:58they're like, right, I've got this problem, I've got this, I
- 2:01need to fix it. And they go and fix it.
- 2:03They go and plug the hole. They go and buy the course.
- 2:07They go and get some advice. And that's all well and good.
- 2:11That's all good. However, they're not fixing the
- 2:16right problem. They're fixing the problem that
- 2:20they think they need, not the problem that actually needs to
- 2:25be solved. And that's what it what this
- 2:28podcast is all about. Stop solving the wrong problem.
- 2:36Obviously this is going to be in relation to relationship with
- 2:39food and emotional eating, but it can be applied to other
- 2:44things because it's a really big tendency of ours to go to
- 2:52fixing. Eldest daughter, millennial
- 2:56energy fixing. We like fixing, We like making
- 2:59good and any way that you can do that, you want to do it.
- 3:02However it needs to be the right thing you're fixing.
- 3:07Let me explain. So I'm going to talk today in
- 3:13relationship to emotional eating, which is stress,
- 3:18boredom. It is comforting and a lot of
- 3:24people when they think of emotionally, they're like, I
- 3:27just can't have it. I just can't have it in the
- 3:29house. I just shouldn't do it.
- 3:30They think it's a willpower problem.
- 3:33They think that it's a they need to restrict it.
- 3:36They need to not have it. They need to be like, oh, I just
- 3:39need to just never, ever have that again.
- 3:41Then I don't need to make the decision.
- 3:44However, we're not going there today and I'm going to give you
- 3:50a example which I'm seeing quite a lot at the moment.
- 3:53I I always have seen, but summer brings out this the sugary
- 4:00frappes, the iced coffees, the, you know what I mean?
- 4:06Don't you like the, the syrupy ones, the, the cream on top, the
- 4:14all the like the drizzly things, the sugary coffees?
- 4:19Because I see this in my clients.
- 4:22I see it in my clients. And one client, she didn't
- 4:29really do any sort of emotional eating.
- 4:31And then she came to me out of the blue and she's like, I've
- 4:33started having these sugary coffees on the way back from
- 4:37work. I was like, OK, yes, talk to me
- 4:41more. And she was she's doing a new
- 4:47commute and she's going to on the train to another city and
- 4:54she was finding herself going and getting herself a sugary
- 4:58coffee. And she's like, I don't know why
- 5:01I'm doing this. And she was like, I don't want
- 5:04to do. I don't don't really like the
- 5:06even like the taste of it. What can I do?
- 5:09I was like, OK, I've been here before because I've done this
- 5:12before. I had a sales Rep who was on the
- 5:15on the road and she used to do this and she didn't even like
- 5:19coffee. You don't even like coffee.
- 5:22She's like, I know I'd prefer tea, but she's not spending like
- 5:25£3 on tea. And I was like, oh, I hear you,
- 5:27Hun. So the first thing that I did
- 5:32was I asked her, what is the coffee actually doing for you?
- 5:36What's it doing for you? What is it giving you?
- 5:39Because the the coffee is the symptom.
- 5:44It's not the 'cause we don't need to actually address the
- 5:47coffee. We need to address what's
- 5:49causing the coffee. We don't need to restrict the
- 5:52coffee. I don't need to tell her.
- 5:54She's a very smart woman by the way.
- 5:56I don't need to tell her as her coach, don't drink the coffee
- 6:01because that's not going to work.
- 6:04That's not a long term strategy. That's not something that she's
- 6:08like, OK, yeah, I can definitely take that on board.
- 6:10Carl has told me not to drink the coffee.
- 6:11I'm going to do that. No, we go deep, don't we?
- 6:15We like a bit of deepness here. So first thing Leicester was
- 6:21what is the coffee actually giving you?
- 6:24What's it doing for you? And then I start with a few
- 6:29leading questions that lead on from that.
- 6:35A few specifically designed questions like always, like I
- 6:38know what I'm doing. And what was coming up for her,
- 6:43which was really interesting, was it wasn't that she was like
- 6:50comforting herself. She was actually feeling some
- 6:54emotions that she didn't really want to be feeling.
- 6:57So she was numbing them. She was avoiding them with the
- 7:02coffee. I know Drummore, please, it's
- 7:07not about the coffee. So instead of solving the coffee
- 7:12problem, we solve the the bit underneath.
- 7:16She was feeling anxious. She was feeling a little bit of
- 7:19dread. She was feeling unfamiliar,
- 7:22unfamiliarity. She was feeling a little bit of
- 7:27tiredness as well. She was feeling a little bit
- 7:29fatigued. She was feeling a little bit of
- 7:32stress so with the coaching questions I got these feelings
- 7:39and this coffee. What it was actually doing for
- 7:42her was it was breaking up the day.
- 7:44It was signalling to her that she had got through the day and
- 7:52she was on the go. She was had to be on the top of
- 7:55the game. She was in a position in her job
- 7:59where she's quite senior. She had to be like on it.
- 8:06She had to be the leader, she had to be capable, competent,
- 8:13give off all those things which she is.
- 8:16But it's almost like a mask. You have to like especially,
- 8:19especially she works in like a male dominated environment.
- 8:22She has to be. You have to turn up on your game
- 8:26when you're in a male dominated environment.
- 8:28And coming home, she felt, but she needed something.
- 8:36And this coffee was giving her a pause.
- 8:38It was giving her, she was still doing something, but it'd given
- 8:41her a little bit of relaxing time.
- 8:43It gave her, gave her an excuse really, to go and do something.
- 8:47It gave her time. And then she's literally forced
- 8:51to slow down to drink this coffee.
- 8:54She's not dealing with the anxiousness, she's not dealing
- 8:57with the dread, she's not dealing with the unfamiliarity.
- 8:59She's just soothing herself, comforting with the coffee.
- 9:05So what was it that she actually needed?
- 9:11So we digged. We digged, we dug into this.
- 9:14And actually, she needed to do something that broke up her day.
- 9:19She needed to bring awareness to why she was having the coffee.
- 9:24We need to bring awareness as to why it what was given her.
- 9:28And then she could do something about it.
- 9:30And she was like, yeah, I don't really want the coffee.
- 9:32Actually. I was like, I know.
- 9:35What can we do to create it more familiar?
- 9:37What can we do to decrease that dread and decrease your
- 9:43anxiousness? And we put strategies in place,
- 9:46such as delaying her walk to the train station.
- 9:52So actually she went went a long way through a lovely park, which
- 9:58was better for her firstly from the activity point of view, but
- 10:03also for her mind. It was like she'd got a lovely
- 10:05walk getting outside, no brainer.
- 10:09We then did some planning around the unfamiliarity and we did
- 10:15some planning around optimising her schedule and optimising like
- 10:21when she was going on she was doing everything like that.
- 10:23That worked really well. And then we looked at her
- 10:27anxiousness and it was like what was she feeling a bit anxious
- 10:30about? And I'm not going to go into
- 10:32details because that's personal, but that is what we did some
- 10:35work about that. And you know what?
- 10:40She doesn't have the coffee anymore.
- 10:43Not because I've told her not to, but because she understands
- 10:46the why underneath why she was having it to start off with.
- 10:50She solved the right problem, not the wrong problem.
- 10:56And that's what I do in coaching.
- 10:58That is what I do because it works, it's sustainable and it's
- 11:03ethical. And you might be thinking, Oh
- 11:06yeah, I do sometimes really like a nice sugary frappe.
- 11:13But you might be thinking, oh, I just needed a little pick me up,
- 11:16Just a little pick me up every now and again.
- 11:18You know what I mean? It was like there it was looking
- 11:21at me and Costa, someone else had it in front of me.
- 11:25And you think, oh, I just need a little pick me up because I'm
- 11:27just a bit too stressed at the moment.
- 11:29Bit too busy. Yeah, millennials, we've got
- 11:32this bit too busy to like to to do it.
- 11:34I just want just sort of something quick, easy that I can
- 11:37pick up and fine and I can move on.
- 11:40And I hear you, I hear you. But that's a pattern that you're
- 11:48running. That's a pattern that you're in.
- 11:52And as a smart, capable lady, you can break that.
- 11:57You can break it. And actually once you've broken
- 11:59it, once you've brought awareness to what you do, what
- 12:02you've got so much more self-awareness that it doesn't
- 12:04happen again. So you only need to do it once.
- 12:07It's not like a diet. It's not like a diet where you
- 12:09go, oh, you can't have that. And then someone else goes, oh,
- 12:12you can have that as long as it's within your calories.
- 12:15No, no, because it's all dependent on you.
- 12:19And as a smart, capable woman, why wouldn't you want something
- 12:22dependable on you? You depend on you.
- 12:25Lots of other people probably depend on you.
- 12:28People depend on you for snacks, for packing everything, for
- 12:31backing the hat back in the summer St. anyway, getting
- 12:34getting sidetracked, sidetracked then.
- 12:37But once you do these once, you don't need to do it again
- 12:41because you've created the awareness, you've broken the
- 12:43pattern and you've got the pattern like, Oh yeah, I used to
- 12:46do that. Don't do it anymore.
- 12:49No, no, because it's about solving the right problem.
- 12:58It's not about solving the wrong problem.
- 13:01And actually what you do when you go to the wrong problem, you
- 13:03actually spend more time, you spend more money, you spend more
- 13:06effort. You spend the time that you
- 13:08haven't got doing it wrong. So why don't you spend the time
- 13:12that you have got doing it right?
- 13:15No brainer. The first thing that I want to
- 13:19help you with is this. And then by the way, you can
- 13:23swap out sugary coffee for whisper on the sofa at night.
- 13:27You can swap out sugary coffee for the chocolates in the
- 13:34office. You can swap out sugary coffee
- 13:37for take away on a Friday night. Yeah, I see you.
- 13:42I see you, Hun. Swap it out for a bottle of wine
- 13:46that you didn't really, you were just going to have one glass
- 13:48full of. Yeah.
- 13:50And that what I want you to do, if this reson, if this episode
- 13:55has resonated with you, I want you to head over to the show
- 13:58notes and I want you to download my emotional eating guide, the
- 14:02Emotional Eating Handbook. Download it and it will come
- 14:06straight to your inbox. I want you to have a read of it.
- 14:09Then what I want you to do is give me Adm on social media and
- 14:13tell me what you're feeling. And then I'll work it out for
- 14:16you and you can solve the right problem.
- 14:19Stop solving the wrong problem. Head over to the show notes,
