Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: Meeting Yourself With Where You're At Is Pretty Empowering
Transcript
- 0:20Speaker 1: Hey, everybody, Emily A body here. You are listening to
- 0:24Speaker 1: five Minute Friday from Hurdle. I hope everybody had a
- 0:28Speaker 1: nice Thanksgiving Yesterday. I spent it in Connecticut seeing my family,
- 0:32Speaker 1: and of course I kicked off the morning doing my
- 0:37Speaker 1: favorite annual tradition. Okay, maybe it's not my favorite tradition,
- 0:40Speaker 1: but I will say that it's something I do every year,
- 0:43Speaker 1: and that is the Peaquat road Runners Turkey Trot in Southport, Connecticut.
- 0:49Speaker 1: And so I've been doing it, man, maybe since twenty seventeen,
- 0:53Speaker 1: twenty eighteen, at least the better part of my adult life.
- 0:56Speaker 1: In the years that it happened with gestures loosely COVID
- 1:01Speaker 1: and I did not look at any of my previous
- 1:04Speaker 1: times going into this year. I just had like an understanding,
- 1:08Speaker 1: a thought about what it was that I wanted to do.
- 1:11Speaker 1: And last year I walked it with my mom and
- 1:14Speaker 1: it was lovely, and past years I have truly just
- 1:17Speaker 1: run it to run it, just hitting some movements, some
- 1:20Speaker 1: activity as I like to do regularly, especially before the
- 1:23Speaker 1: opportunity to gather with friends and family. Anyway, I went
- 1:27Speaker 1: in yesterday knowing that I wanted to really see what
- 1:31Speaker 1: I could do right, and I told myself that I
- 1:36Speaker 1: had an ideal pace that I wanted to hit, and
- 1:40Speaker 1: long stories short, it was extremely hard and challenging and
- 1:44Speaker 1: wet and cold, let's also say that, but I surpassed
- 1:48Speaker 1: even my goal. And it was only after the fact
- 1:54Speaker 1: that I realized that this time was faster than I'd
- 2:00Speaker 1: ever done it before. And like I said, I've been
- 2:02Speaker 1: doing this for a handful of years and it makes
- 2:05Speaker 1: me really so appreciative and it feels almost even more
- 2:09Speaker 1: special than aiming for a personal best because I'm not
- 2:15Speaker 1: really in this place anymore where I have any desire
- 2:18Speaker 1: to compete with my past self. I'm going to say
- 2:20Speaker 1: that one more time. I'm not in a place in
- 2:23Speaker 1: my life right now where I have any desire to
- 2:26Speaker 1: compete with my past self. And I think that that
- 2:29Speaker 1: can be the challenging thing about that term PR, Like
- 2:34Speaker 1: I will never be the same as I was when
- 2:38Speaker 1: I was twenty eight or thirty, or thirty two or
- 2:41Speaker 1: twenty one or in my teens. Right I am a
- 2:43Speaker 1: different woman, and that is because of all of my
- 2:46Speaker 1: great lived experience, and so I just am beyond shooting
- 2:52Speaker 1: for prs, so to speak. But I am all about
- 2:57Speaker 1: meeting myself with where I'm at now, and setting goal
- 3:00Speaker 1: is based on what feels good. And so yesterday the
- 3:03Speaker 1: goal that I set it felt good for me, and
- 3:06Speaker 1: I attained it, and then I found out that it
- 3:09Speaker 1: was better than I had ever done before. And Yeah,
- 3:12Speaker 1: there's just something so special about that, about meeting yourself
- 3:15Speaker 1: with where you're at, about being realistic about what feels
- 3:18Speaker 1: good for you. And it feels so rewarding to chase
- 3:23Speaker 1: the potential that I have in this moment, in this body.
- 3:27Speaker 1: And that's certainly applicable beyond movement, beyond getting a pull
- 3:34Speaker 1: up in the gym, beyond some sort of new push
- 3:37Speaker 1: up goal, when et cetera. Right, there is just something
- 3:42Speaker 1: so important and so valuable about being realistic about the start,
- 3:47Speaker 1: because when we're honest with ourselves, that's the first step
- 3:51Speaker 1: to improving or to implementing any sort of change whatsoever.
- 3:55Speaker 1: As I said here and I tell a little bit
- 3:57Speaker 1: about this story, I truly just feel real grateful for
- 4:01Speaker 1: the lessons that I've learned over the last gosh decade
- 4:04Speaker 1: plus of running. I feel really grateful for my body,
- 4:08Speaker 1: especially after years of navigating injury after injury and I'm
- 4:13Speaker 1: mostly grateful for the grace that that injury cycle instilled
- 4:17Speaker 1: in me, so now that when I show up to
- 4:19Speaker 1: do something that might feel just a little bit crazy,
- 4:23Speaker 1: I know that whatever happens, it's okay. Right in these cases,
- 4:29Speaker 1: it's just trying for something fun. It's trying for something
- 4:33Speaker 1: that feels good, and at the end of the day,
- 4:35Speaker 1: I know that that's the goal. All I want to
- 4:37Speaker 1: do is feel good in the act of pursuing the
- 4:40Speaker 1: things that excite me, both on the road and well
- 4:43Speaker 1: beyond it. My question for you this week what are
- 4:48Speaker 1: you grateful for? I know it's a little cheesy with
- 4:50Speaker 1: the holiday and everything, but I wrote about this in
- 4:53Speaker 1: today's weekly Hurdle newsletter Gratitude Daily has changed my life,
- 4:58Speaker 1: and so I ask you what is one thing that
- 5:00Speaker 1: you are grateful for? From the past twenty four hours
- 5:04Speaker 1: and now a listener question. Hey, Emily Jana here, I am,
- 5:09Speaker 1: like many I am sure or in your messages, looking
- 5:13Speaker 1: for a good gift for my boss at work. I
- 5:17Speaker 1: know you've recommended books in the past. I'm wondering if
- 5:20Speaker 1: you have one that I can get her and maybe
- 5:23Speaker 1: some other people on my list love the show and
- 5:26Speaker 1: grateful for you. Solid question and an easy one to
- 5:30Speaker 1: answer because I family. Friends. If you're listening to this,
- 5:33Speaker 1: maybe now's a good time to tune out, because I'm
- 5:35Speaker 1: going to share what I bought for so many of
- 5:37Speaker 1: my people, and that is The Pivot Year by Brianna Weist.
- 5:42Speaker 1: I don't know if I'm saying that right, and if
- 5:43Speaker 1: I'm not, I apologize, but I have seen clips of
- 5:46Speaker 1: this throughout this year, and after implementing an anthology into
- 5:51Speaker 1: my regular routine a few years ago called Journey to
- 5:53Speaker 1: the Heart, I decided that I wanted to now turn
- 5:57Speaker 1: the page literally and start with a new book. And
- 6:00Speaker 1: I'd love to do that with people that I care about.
- 6:02Speaker 1: So this book, The Pivot Year, is set up to
- 6:05Speaker 1: be a daily guide, a helpful companion, if you will,
- 6:09Speaker 1: for anyone that needs a little extra motivation daily. And
- 6:12Speaker 1: so there is a certain passage for every day and
- 6:15Speaker 1: I think it's just a really promising, fun way to
- 6:19Speaker 1: begin your day. So rather than reaching for your phone
- 6:22Speaker 1: and checking Instagram or what you may have missed in
- 6:24Speaker 1: the eight hours since you last touched it, and anthology
- 6:28Speaker 1: is what I like to reach for first thing in
- 6:30Speaker 1: the morning. So the pivot year again is what it's
- 6:32Speaker 1: called them linking it in the show notes. It's a
- 6:34Speaker 1: book of three hundred and sixty five different daily meditations
- 6:38Speaker 1: on finding courage to become who you've always wanted to be.
- 6:41Speaker 1: And I'm really excited about it. So that is my
- 6:44Speaker 1: recommendation for a gift this year. Again, so grateful for
- 6:47Speaker 1: all of you. Thank you so much for being a hurdler.
- 6:50Speaker 1: I'm over at Hurdle Podcast and at Emily Abody another
- 6:54Speaker 1: hurdle conquered. Catch you guys next time.
