  Reiner and his equally as impressive wife Michelle Singer,

  the photographer, the producer who on December 14th, just about

  two weeks ago were discovered, I don't want to say slashed or

  stabbed because we don't know that we don't know we what we

  know is that they died by sharp force instrument and they were

  discovered by their daughter Romy, who then called 911 and
• 1:52
  and we know the rest. We know the rest.

  It's a sad, sad story. The the Reiners were murdered

  allegedly. And I guess what we should say

  is the accused murderer is their son, 32 year old Nick Reiner,

  who has, according to reports, a history, a long history of
• 2:19
  substance abuse issues and mental illness.

  Now we've talked about this on the channel at length and I want

  to be sure that you guys, you know, you stay classy in the

  that we have learned that the LAPD has once again got in a

  court order to not release documents that are by default

  public. Now it seems like there's a

  little tension, little tension between the medical examiner's

  office in Los Angeles County and the LAPD.

  The the new medical examiner has stated on the record through the
• 5:41
  media that it is his policy to be transparent and everything is
• 5:47
  just going to be released unless there's a court order.
• 5:50
  It used to be that the LAPD could just request of the
• 5:55
  medical examiner's office to not release anything and the Emmys
• 5:58
  like, Nope, not doing that anymore.

  So the LAPD is getting court orders to make sure that the
• 6:08
  stuff that they want hidden from public view be hidden from
• 6:13

  The LA County Emmy's office said that it received a court order

  The medical examiner's office had previously confirmed their

  deaths were the result of homicide, listing the cause as

  that they were slashed. We hear that they were stabbed.

  What? The only thing that we know is

  that there were multiple sharp force injuries.

  Now, this reminds me, by the way, then this is not a tangent.

  This reminds me of a conversation I had with Tom

  Brennan and the Ellen Greenberg case.

  I guess is a bit of a tangent, but not enough to get the theme

  He talked about the idea of a blitz attack, like because, and

  I'm curious what we're going to find in this case with our

  victims here, Rob and Michelle Reiner, what we're going to find

  in terms of where they're slashings, where they're

  stabbings, where were they? We know that there were
• 10:40
  multiple. And again, trying to temper this

  with humanity and compassion because these are victims of a

  horrible, horrible crime. But in order for me to

  understand, I mean, they're in their 70s.

  Certainly a man in his 30s would be able to overpower almost

  anyone in their 70s, almost their physical abilities, their
• 11:05
  physical strength would almost be irrelevant because of the age
• 11:09
  difference, Right? But I wonder if this was a blitz

  attack on, on these two folks. I, I, I just, I don't know.

  We're going to, we're going to find out, we'll eventually find
• 11:27
  out if there were defensive wounds, where the wounds were.

  I hope we find out anyway. And not just for like, I know

  this is crass, but not just for our, for satiating our need to

  look at a train wreck or for our entertainment.

  Cause for me, that's not what this channel is about.

  It's about learning things about about humanity, about the human

  condition, about the capability of human beings, violence and,

  and what makes them do these kinds of things.

  That's what's most important to me.

  But I wonder, I just wonder if this is going to be the same

  kind of blitz attack that took the life of Ellen Greenberg.

  detectives from Robbery Homicide Division learned of important

  information surrounding their deaths before the media and the

  That man, they must have rushed this article out.

  Why do they care if they learn the information before the media

  does? And does that mean that once

  they have learned that information they will be

  can have it. Somehow the cynic in me thinks,

  nay, I doubt that is going to happen.

  The order was not sought to undermine transparency, the

  department added. You know, the road to hell, they

  say, is paved with good intentions.

  It does not matter what you sought to do.

  It did undermine transparency. That's and, and I am a

  transparency in government. That is my personal crusade.

  I just hate, I hate lack of transparency.

  What is the opposite opaqueness in government?

  I hate it because as the what is it the Washington Post famous

  motto, democracy dies in darkness.

  I think especially maybe even at the local level, it's, it's more
• 14:34
  important to be transparent and it doesn't look like the like
• 14:38
  the LAPD wants that here. Continuing the article, security

  holds are used by various law enforcement agencies to prevent
• 14:48
  the release of details from an autopsy, notes written by
• 14:52
  coroner's investigations or results from toxicology and
• 14:55
  other tests during a death investigation.

  They've been used in several celebrity and high profile
• 15:01
  cases, including following the deaths of singer Whitney
• 15:04
  Houston, actor Paul Walker and the wife of actor Robert Blake.

  Robert Blake last month. I was about to bring this up, an

  LAPD detective wrote in court documents seeking the the
• 15:19
  prevent. My goodness, this author is
• 15:22
  having a hard time in their editor.

  Dang it. Seeking to prevent the release

  of autopsy details surrounding the death of 14 year old Celeste

  Rivas Hernandez. Speaking of Miss Hernandez, just

  I know that there are reports circulating, it seems to have
• 15:50
  originated with TMZ and now there are articles everywhere
• 15:56
  that are sourcing or attributing back to TMZ that an indictment

  is likely or eminent in the Celeste Rivas Hernandez case

  that Mr. David Burke is likely to be indicted.

  I'm not ready to report on that until we've got better sources.

  I just feel like I've been burned by TMZ lately.

  Anyway, so getting back to this. The last month, an LAPD
• 16:24
  detective wrote in court documents seeking to prevent the
• 16:27
  release of autopsy details surrounding the death of 14 year
• 16:30
  old Celeste Rivas Hernandez that publishing such information
• 16:34
  could jeopardize their investigation.
• 16:36
  Hernandez's body was found in September in the trunk of Singer
• 16:39
  David's Tesla. I just wish, like I, I just wish
• 16:47
  that law enforcement could explain to me in a way that is
• 16:53
  understandable just what they mean by their case being
• 16:58
  jeopardized by releasing information because I've never
• 17:02
  bought that. I just, I just don't buy it.
• 17:05
  And, and look, I'm not anti cop. I'm anti bad cop, but I am pro
• 17:11
  good cop and I am very, very enthusiastic about them doing a
• 17:17
  good investigation, getting it right and securing a, a
• 17:22
  conviction of the guilty party. Not just a conviction, but a
• 17:26
  guilt, a conviction of the guilty party.

  And I think it's reasonable that police have the power to do
• 17:34
  certain things to ensure that. However, the whole excuse that I
• 17:39
  always hear is that they want to protect the potential jury pool
• 17:46
  from being tainted by too much really information being
• 17:49
  released. And again, I never bought that.

  And if you have to, if you have to conduct a VWADIR session on

  1000 people instead of maybe having to do it for a couple 100

  or 500, I think that is a small price to pay for transparency in

  crusade here, but it it drives me nuts.

  They just don't. I've never felt like I it has

  been explained well enough for me, but again, well, maybe it's

  because it's like the nature, it's the reporter in me, right?

  It's the nature of having to fight all the time for this.

  I just, I had this conversation recently and this guys Dang it,

  this really is a bit of a tangent.

  I had a conversation recently with a local politician local to
• 18:54
  western Pennsylvania where I was.

  I, I've been writing a story about in, in some places in

  Pennsylvania, some counties, they won't release mug shots and
• 19:05
  they are, they're leaning on a Supreme Court case, a state
• 19:09
  Supreme Court case where under a state law known as Korea, the
• 19:14
  Criminal History Reporting Information Act, I think is
• 19:16
  what, what it stands for. Under CREA, a mug shot is
• 19:24
  considered somehow by the state Supreme Court as criminal
• 19:30
  history information. And under CREA, they don't have
• 19:34
  to release that, but under the right to no law, they do have to
• 19:38
  release it. And it's, I just, it just drives
• 19:47
  me crazy. It drives me crazy to have two
• 19:51
  laws that are in conflict with one another.

  And I can call the Philadelphia County Jail, the Allegheny
• 19:59
  County Jail, Mercer County, Butler County, Cambria County.

  I, I can go all over the Commonwealth, Venango County,
• 20:08
  Jefferson County, Erie County, and I can get mug shots.
• 20:12
  But in these tiny little counties that are afraid of
• 20:15
  being sued. I cannot Clarion county being
• 20:19
  one of them, Lancaster County being one of them.
• 20:24
  It drives me crazy. I I think that we need to air on
• 20:27
  the side of transparency. That's a that's a long tangent.

  I'm sorry, just I'm, I'm I'm always I'm forever fighting for
• 20:35
  information that bureaucrats and don't want to give up when I was
• 20:41
  when I was talking to that that local politician, he's like,
• 20:46
  well, I can talk to our solicitor about it, but I don't
• 20:48
  really have a dog in this hunt. Like you don't care about
• 20:51
  transparency. No, I guess not in this case,
• 20:55
  right? It just it just kills me, just
• 20:57
  kills me. OK, the slayings of Rob Reiner,

  78, and Michelle Singer Reiner, 70.

  I really would like to nail down their ages.

  I have Rob Reiner is always shown as age 78 and Missus
• 21:13
  Reiner has been shown as 6870 and 72.

  I guess maybe we're safe going with the average anyway.

  The slings of the Reiners have given rise to an intensely
• 21:26
  watched legal struggle involving their son Nick, who has been
• 21:30
  charged in the killings. Prosecutors allege the couple's
• 21:33
  32 year old son Nick fatally killed by sharp wound by by
• 21:41
  sharp instrument his parents inside the master bedroom of
• 21:45
  their Brentwood home early December 14th and then fled the
• 21:49
  area. He was arrested that night in
• 21:50
  Exposition Park near USC. Reiner could face life in prison
• 21:55
  without parole or the death penalty if convicted.
• 21:59
  And I kind of feel like I, I kind of feel like that is where
• 22:05
  the prosecution is going to lean.
• 22:07
  Now, I don't think the California word will dole out
• 22:10
  that penalty. They haven't in like 20 years.
• 22:14
  But I think that they probably will charge that because and,
• 22:22
  and if they do, it's kind of bad news for the Rhiners, I think
• 22:27
  for the surviving family, not the victims, but the victim's
• 22:31
  family. Because if they charge with the
• 22:35
  DPI think, I think the defense will have no choice but to take
• 22:41
  this all the way to trial. If they don't charge, if they
• 22:46
  don't seek that penalty, then I think it's possible that there
• 22:51
  might be a plea or a plea bargain in this case.

  So we'll see. OK, Now this is the sentence,

  right? Because what did I title?

  What did I title this video? The question police still

  haven't answered. This is the question police

  still haven't answered. Of course, they don't have to

  answer it, but I want to know. Authorities haven't offered a

  motive for the December 14th attack.

  We still have no idea why. There are many of us who think

  before the killings, according to two sources with knowledge of

  the criminal investigation. And that, by the way, this is

  the LA Times reporting this, not the LA Times attributing back to
• 23:57
  TMZ or The Hollywood Reporter or something like that.

  I think they are attributing to two of their sources.

  I feel like. I feel like that's probably

  pretty solid. I I don't like that they're
• 24:11
  anonymous sources. But anyway, sources have also

  said that he had been acting strangely and got into some type

  of argument with Rob Reiner at a holiday party at talk show host
• 24:22
  Conan O'briens House hours before the slaying.

  It's not clear what specifically they were arguing about, nor is
• 24:29
  it clear the the level of it because it's been reported that
• 24:33
  it was a blow up, that it was Conan O'Brien who said don't
• 24:36
  call the police. And then there are others are
• 24:39
  like, no, that was way out of proportion.

  I doubt Conan O'Brien even knew about it.
• 24:44
  But some family friends told the Times the clash had been, quote,
• 24:47
  overblown. So yeah, that's, that's what I
• 24:49
  just said. So that's where we are.

  The LAPD is, in my opinion, hiding information that the
• 24:56
  public has a right to for a purpose that I don't believe is
• 25:04
  valid. I really don't.

  I I think that the courts have, I think the courts give the
• 25:09
  police broad latitude when they ask for this kind of stuff.

  I think judges go, yeah, that makes sense to me.

  It sure would be nice. The judge is thinking that if I
• 25:18
  didn't have to go through 7 days of what you're here, it would be
• 25:22
  great if it was one or two. And so far there hasn't been a
• 25:28
  challenge to that, that would, that would take it up to a place
• 25:30
  where we might stop seeing this happen.

  addressed that in the video, but they're very rarely violent.

  And maybe this commenter was just a little sensitive.

  She or he had, you know, schizophrenia and and their
• 38:42
  family. So maybe they were a little
• 38:43
  sensitive. I thought that I did pretty well
• 38:45
  there. But either way, when this
• 38:49
  article came out yesterday, I thought we should talk about
• 38:53
  this because we are talking about Nick Reiner suffering from
• 38:59
  schizophrenia, having his meds changed or maybe he's off his
• 39:02
  meds. We can just speculate about this
• 39:04
  all day, but the fact of the matter is that people who suffer
• 39:09
  from schizophrenia are rarely rarely violent and and their
• 39:16
  their parents out there that like this title says, just like
• 39:19
  so many families, US parents of addicted kids relate to the
• 39:23
  rhiners but fear stigma. Now, this specifically has to do
• 39:26
  with addiction, not necessarily schizophrenia, but same same
• 39:29
  kind of feeling, right? That we want to make sure that
• 39:33
  again, we temper everything with humanity and compassion.
• 39:37
  We we want to live up to that ideal.
• 39:41
  So let me just read this briefly and then we'll get in headlines.
• 39:44
  OK. The challenges of drug and
• 39:46
  alcohol addiction are familiar, but violence against others is
• 39:49
  highly unusual, parents say. When news broke that Robin Rob
• 39:54
  and Michelle singer Reiner had been killed and a possible
• 39:57
  suspect was their son, Nick Reiner, who had struggled with
• 40:00
  addiction and mental health issues, it brought addiction
• 40:04
  back into the public spotlight. Maybe, maybe many of us, it's
• 40:10
  been in our faces this whole time.
• 40:13
  You know, for example, the conversation that I had last
• 40:16
  night with Elizabeth Jones, hillbilly crying, right?
• 40:20
  This is. This is maybe, maybe it leaves
• 40:26
  the public zeitgeist, but there's so many of us who see it
• 40:29
  every single day. But parents who have been
• 40:34
  affected by their children's addiction fear the conversation
• 40:37
  will focus on the exceedingly rare act of violence instead of
• 40:42
  more widespread risks. Ron Grover and his wife Darlene
• 40:47
  have been glued to the news. They only knew the Reiners by
• 40:49
  their work, but they feel a connection.
• 40:52
  Grover's son also became addicted at 15 to opioids and
• 40:56
  then heroin, which is an opioid much like Nick Reiner, and he
• 41:01
  was in and out of rehab and jail for years.
• 41:04
  But after 7 excruciating years, Grover's son got sober in July
• 41:09
  2010. And good on him.
• 41:11
  That is so hard. It's just tragic, Grover says of
• 41:15
  the Reiners family story. It tears you up because that's a
• 41:18
  family destroyed just like so many other families that we know
• 41:22
  that their sons or daughters or loved ones didn't survive the
• 41:26
  disease of addiction. More than 2/3 of Americans say
• 41:30
  their lives have been touched by addiction.
• 41:32
  Either they or a family member has, quote, been addicted to
• 41:35
  alcohol or drugs, experienced homelessness due to addiction,
• 41:39
  or experienced a drug overdose leading to an emergency room
• 41:42
  visit, hospitalization or death. close quote the health nonprofit
• 41:46
  KFF found in 2023. This is reminding me of a
• 41:50
  documentary that I saw about addiction in Appalachia.
• 41:55
  And one of the character, not characters, one of the people
• 41:58
  that they followed in this, in this documentary.
• 42:01
  I got to remember what this documentary was called.
• 42:03
  She just was an empathetic person.
• 42:08
  It just didn't matter. She was a first responder and it
• 42:10
  just didn't matter to her how many times she had to save
• 42:14
  somebody from an overdose. She wanted to save them from the
• 42:18
  overdose, right? She, it had just been a, a pax
• 42:23
  on her community and, and the amount of love and compassion
• 42:27
  that she expressed and showed to the people who some of them
• 42:32
  overdosed and overdosed and overdosed and overdosed and she
• 42:35
  saved them over and over and over again.
• 42:39
  It's great, great documentary. I wish I remember the name right
• 42:42
  now. Anyway, about one in six
• 42:43
  Americans, 16.8% or 48.4 million people had substance use
• 42:49
  disorder in 2024, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental
• 42:54
  Health Services Administration. I would imagine that a lot of
• 42:56
  that is also alcohol, not just drugs.
• 43:00
  This can happen to anybody, no matter how rich you are, no
• 43:03
  matter how poor you are, no matter how powerful you are,
• 43:05
  Grover said the Reiner story struck A chord with Greg, the
• 43:09
  chair of Families Anonymous, whose son has addiction.
• 43:13
  Quote, we talk a lot about how it's a family disease.
• 43:16
  It has a tremendous impact on others lives, Greg said.
• 43:20
  But he's worried that the murders will make people very
• 43:23
  wary of anybody who's admitted to having an addiction and think
• 43:27
  that they could become violent at any point in time.
• 43:30
  And that's not true, Greg said. These are really important
• 43:33
  conversations to have since addiction is so prevalent in the
• 43:37
  United States and the rates have continually increased, said
• 43:40
  Colleen Berryessa, an associate professor at Rutgers School of
• 43:43
  Criminal Justice who studies addiction and criminal justice.
• 43:47
  But there is a lot of stigma about addiction and mental
• 43:50
  health generally in the US Accord, including the idea of
• 43:53
  someone being really dangerous and the potential of harming
• 43:56
  others, she said. She also cautioned against
• 43:58
  jumping to conclusions about Nick Reiner's alleged role in
• 44:01
  the crimes in his state at the time.
• 44:03
  It's not clear whether he had been using substances or
• 44:06
  experiencing mental health issues recently.
• 44:08
  In September, Rob Reiner said Nick hadn't done drugs in more
• 44:12
  than six years. Anyway, it continues on.
• 44:19
  And I think that, you know, this is something that you guys,
• 44:22
  it's, it's in the Guardian. It was published yesterday and
• 44:25
  it's titled just like so many families.

  And I I think it's a great reminder that one week we've got

  to temper ourselves. We have got to be compassionate
• 44:38
  and we need to understand that this is exceedingly rare.

  What has happened to unfortunately, I mean, one time

  is too many, right? But if you have somebody who's
• 44:50
  addicted to substances, is abusing substances in your life
• 44:54
  right now or somebody with mental health issues, you
• 44:57
  certainly should be vigilant. You certainly, and this is just
• 45:00
  coming from somebody who has no idea, right?

  I'm, I'm a, I'm a lay person here, but I think vigilance and
• 45:06
  caution is good, but stigma is not right.

  We should be working with people with mental health diseases and
• 45:17
  substance abuse disorders to just find them help and get them
• 45:21
  healthy and happy. And in the meantime, I mean,
• 45:27
  we'll see what happens with Mr. Reiner.
