- 0:00Turn my phone.
- 0:03Welcome in to a very exciting episode of the scene.
- 0:05I am your host, Bubba Starts, and with me today is Dana Wolwin.
- 0:08She is the owner of Sioux Falls Food Tours.
- 0:10Welcome to the show, Dana.
- 0:12Thanks a lot.
- 0:14Well, exciting.
- 0:15I know you're approaching a big anniversary, six years of the food tours.
- 0:20Before we get into everything you got happening, here coming up, let's, let's dive in
- 0:25a little bit and get the origin story.
- 0:27So tell us a little bit about yourself and your journey.
- 0:30Well, Sioux Falls Food Tours actually hit its eight year anniversary.
- 0:34I started as a tour guide.
- 0:37So I entered or answered an ad that said, do you like to eat and drink and talk to people?
- 0:42And I said, well, of course, that's me.
- 0:45And so I became a tour guide.
- 0:49Jenna Chaplin owned the Sioux Falls Food Tours before I came in as a tour guide.
- 0:56And then her other endeavors got busy, and she decided that she wasn't, she was gonna shut it
- 1:02down.
- 1:02She didn't have time for it, or, we made a deal and I bought the business from her.
- 1:09Well, how exciting.
- 1:10I'm sure when you answered that ad, you didn't see yourself here six years later.
- 1:15No.
- 1:16Probably not.
- 1:19So why don't you take us from, there?
- 1:22Explain as, the responsibilities of the tour guide first, and then we'll work into, you
- 1:29know, all the rest of the responsibilities of owning said company later.
- 1:35Well, the business had primarily been private parties at that time because Jenna had a large
- 1:40network of people who would say, hey, Jenna.
- 1:43Just take us out, you know, set up something really fun for us, and that's what she would
- 1:47do.
- 1:48So when I took over the business, my friends were stay at home moms or, you know, not the
- 1:53kind of people that would just say, hey.
- 1:56We're gonna give you some money, and you you make all the plans for us necessarily.
- 1:59So, it took a while for us to figure out how to get from that into something that's more public
- 2:08oriented.
- 2:09Like, anyone can come on a food tour now.
- 2:11We have them all every week.
- 2:14And so I tried different things.
- 2:16I'm like, oh, is it gonna be a Friday night drink tour, or is it gonna be a Saturday
- 2:19afternoon food tour or a Sunday brewery tour?
- 2:23My most popular one was Saturday afternoons for food.
- 2:27And so then and I took it out the business over in February of nineteen or, '19.
- 2:33And by August of nineteen, I told my husband, said, I'm gonna have to work every Saturday
- 2:38because it was kinda hit and miss on the calendar.
- 2:40And if you don't have that consistency, people look at it.
- 2:43It's not the time they're gonna be in town.
- 2:45They forget to come back to your website.
- 2:49So we started consistency, and things started to build, and then we got hit with COVID.
- 2:54So we were shut down from March to September and then opened back up and went really, really
- 3:03well when we opened up.
- 3:04I thought it might be slow, but people were so ready to be out.
- 3:07I had a lot of people from Minnesota and Iowa, which their restaurants were totally closed
- 3:11down, so they were very excited.
- 3:13They just wanted to eat somewhere.
- 3:15They did.
- 3:16They wanted to be out among people eating.
- 3:21And so it's just slowly grown.
- 3:24We run a I've tried it.
- 3:26We've done a best bar food tour on a Thursday night and a Friday afternoon cocktail tour.
- 3:31We tried that for a year, but the numbers weren't there to make that a consistent
- 3:36schedule yet.
- 3:37So as a tour guide, it's my job to figure out what you might be what you're gonna be
- 3:46interested in to provide a curated menu, to provide historic talking points along that
- 3:54route, and then just to make it a very comfortable atmosphere for people to have a
- 4:00good time with.
- 4:02So are you calling ahead to some of these places and letting them know, hey.
- 4:05We're coming in with a group, and this is kind of our itinerary and doing a lot of that
- 4:10preplanning?
- 4:11Absolutely.
- 4:13They know we're coming in.
- 4:15They know what we're ordering.
- 4:16They know what time we're gonna be in.
- 4:18We've just shifted our model from last, for the last five years in this brand new year.
- 4:24We're shifting from going to four to five food stops to seven to nine.
- 4:30So timing's very important and that things are ready when we walk in.
- 4:34We try something and we, you know, we might not even sit down at the place.
- 4:38We used to sit down everywhere we went.
- 4:39And now it's like, well, we're gonna come in.
- 4:41We're gonna have a bite to eat, then we're gonna move on to the next place.
- 4:45Get the tapas ready.
- 4:46We're
- 4:47Yep.
- 4:47We're just going.
- 4:50I've run I've run two, so we started those in February here.
- 4:53And so, they've actually gone really well.
- 4:55And it's with my experience, I know how long it's gonna take, and I
- 5:01can
- 5:01get that plan pretty accurately.
- 5:03So when you started, was it still mostly the private parties?
- 5:06As you said, Jenna was more into that.
- 5:08Was it you just kind of going out and being her when she wasn't available, or did you kinda
- 5:14come in and have to plan your own thing right from the jump?
- 5:18Well, as a tour guide, she would plan them out and then I would run them.
- 5:22So she'd say, here's the group.
- 5:25Here's where I want you to take them.
- 5:27I want you to take three hours.
- 5:28This is what you're gonna order.
- 5:30And she would call ahead and have that stuff have at least let the business owners know
- 5:36where we're coming.
- 5:36And you just have to show up and have fun then.
- 5:39Yeah.
- 5:40As a tour guide, you know, I'm like, I'll just do what it says here on the sheet, and I can
- 5:44just go out and eat, and I get to talk to people.
- 5:47I do have other people that help me every once in a while, and we do eat on our tours.
- 5:52So the tour guides are encouraged to eat with the customers because that creates a whole
- 5:57different vibe.
- 5:58I've been on food tours where the guy just steps aside.
- 6:02They don't eat with the customer.
- 6:04That's not their they don't get to eat with the customer.
- 6:07Well and you and you touched on it.
- 6:09It's a lot different vibe.
- 6:10It doesn't feel doesn't feel as much like a community, right, as when the tour guide is in
- 6:17the experience with you.
- 6:19So Yeah.
- 6:21So it's very important that we're sitting down, conversing, eating, sharing a meal because that
- 6:27sharing a meal across any genre, any age group, any ethnicity, that's what creates the
- 6:35connection.
- 6:36Breaking bread.
- 6:38Yep.
- 6:39I lived in Mexico for a year, Dana.
- 6:41They won't let you enter the house without putting food in front of you.
- 6:47My son's mother-in-law is from Mexico.
- 6:49So, yes, I have that experience often.
- 6:53Like, oh, here you are.
- 6:54Let's eat.
- 6:56Comey.
- 6:57Comey.
- 6:59Comey.
- 7:00Well, that is fantastic.
- 7:01What a cool thing to kind of fall into.
- 7:04And then a few years later, you're kind of running things.
- 7:09So was it still Jenna's operation through COVID and then kind of after that, or that was it had
- 7:15just you had just taken over essentially.
- 7:17Right?
- 7:18I had taken over in February of nineteen.
- 7:21Wow.
- 7:21And so Great.
- 7:23And it was real hit real hit and miss.
- 7:26Like I said, we were trying I was trying to, you know, hone in on the one thing to at least
- 7:31start with.
- 7:32And so August of nineteen is where that honing in got to.
- 7:36We're gonna do this every Saturday.
- 7:38We're gonna have it on the calendar.
- 7:40You know?
- 7:40Someone's in town.
- 7:41It's available.
- 7:44So, yeah, August 19 to March of twenty twenty.
- 7:47So those seven months
- 7:50Right.
- 7:50You finally did yeah.
- 7:52You finally feel like, hey.
- 7:53You know what?
- 7:54We got something here.
- 7:55We kinda know what's going on, and then you're shut down for seven months and having to come
- 7:59back.
- 7:59Did you kinda stick to the playbook that you had, developed before COVID?
- 8:05Coming back then, it was kind of, hey.
- 8:07We know we're gonna do Saturdays.
- 8:08We're gonna be running this and then have just continued to build on that.
- 8:14Yes.
- 8:15So, I followed Jenna's kinda guidelines, which was the four to five stops, and, the Saturdays
- 8:23I had built in.
- 8:24And, honestly, a lot of the thing is we also wanna be respectful of the restaurants and
- 8:31their availability.
- 8:32We do not wanna hit them at eleven, twelve on a Saturday afternoon.
- 8:36They are packed.
- 8:38We wanna come in between one and four when it's their downtime.
- 8:43So not only is it providing a better experience for our customers, but it's providing a better
- 8:47experience for our vendors.
- 8:49Which will keep them wanting you to come back.
- 8:51So Yep.
- 8:52A a great business plan there, especially when you're completely reliant on these restaurants
- 8:58for you to even have a business.
- 8:59Right?
- 9:00I mean, you're not cooking any of the food, so you need them, and not pissing anyone off is a
- 9:05big part of the playbook.
- 9:08Absolutely.
- 9:10Well, that is so fun.
- 9:12Well, what does, so what kind of tours do you offer now?
- 9:16Let's let's bring it up to current.
- 9:18You still have every Saturday going, and are there more tours now that you're doing besides
- 9:24just the Saturdays?
- 9:26Right now, Saturdays is what we have scheduled, but we do private tours anytime.
- 9:31So that best bar food tour, if you wanna go on a Thursday night and find some of the best bar
- 9:36food in town, we'll take you out and do that.
- 9:40If you wanna do a drink tour, a brewery tour, a pizza tour, we can work with whatever that is.
- 9:50So what I did was drop the Thursday night bar best bar food tour and this Friday afternoon
- 9:55cocktail tasting tour just to open it up for more of those private parties.
- 9:58So we do a lot of those.
- 10:00So so instead of having a sign up and you can come to this open to the public, you've moved
- 10:05those tours to more of a private call us ahead of time you wanna schedule that in, which kind
- 10:11of for those tours right.
- 10:12It makes a little bit more sense as well anyway, especially the bar tour.
- 10:18People might be, you know, a little inebriated, by the end of that one.
- 10:23So you definitely want to be careful with the clientele.
- 10:27I'm driving.
- 10:28I'm sober.
- 10:29Thank goodness.
- 10:31Well and then you have, like, the, the pedal pushers and the different, you know, the
- 10:35different biking things around town.
- 10:37You can always just throw them on there and let them work it off a little bit.
- 10:40Well, people say that, but I am really more about experiencing the food with a little drink
- 10:45to supplement rather than experiencing the drink and throwing some food in.
- 10:50Right.
- 10:51Well and staying food focused is the big deal and so many options out there as well.
- 10:56Is it hard to narrow in?
- 10:59Now is each tour like, when you have the bar tour, is it the same places that you're going
- 11:03to every time?
- 11:04Or are people able to go like, well, we prefer more of an Irish bar compared to a, you know, a
- 11:09bar and grill or they that they can kinda mix and match maybe some places or a vibe that
- 11:14they're going for?
- 11:15Well, that's the beauty of it being private.
- 11:17It can be designed for whatever your group would like to try.
- 11:21Some groups are like, we wanna, you know, we wanna just leave it to you.
- 11:25We'll go with what you have, and I have some of my favorites.
- 11:29But if they have a a vibe they want, we can certainly, make that happen.
- 11:35Well and I'm sure your database just in your head alone of restaurants and places, you know,
- 11:41the bars and everything too that you can pretty easily curate, an afternoon or an evening right
- 11:49off the top of your head for the most part, I would assume.
- 11:52Pretty easily.
- 11:53Yeah.
- 11:54So, like our Saturday tours, we have four different routes.
- 11:59So depending on the week of the month it is, that's a that's a different route.
- 12:04Oh, awesome.
- 12:05So you could go every week and you would be seeing a different tour throughout the month?
- 12:10So if you went for all four weeks in a month, you would hit over 40 places in Sioux Falls
- 12:16just on a Saturday afternoon walking downtown.
- 12:19Incredible.
- 12:20What a fun what a fun deal.
- 12:23We're big foodies.
- 12:24My wife and I, I don't drink anymore, but still love to, go out and enjoy food anywhere that I
- 12:31can.
- 12:32My problem is is that I when I find something that I like, for me, especially, I work
- 12:37downtown in Sioux Falls when I'm there.
- 12:39You know that I live in Tyndall.
- 12:41We talked about the bakery a little bit down here.
- 12:43Yep.
- 12:43And I think we'll address that again before I let you go, but, that I stick to the places
- 12:49that I know.
- 12:50Right?
- 12:50I'm I'm up there.
- 12:51I'm limited time.
- 12:52For me, I'm going to see Debbie at the Blarney Stone.
- 12:55Right?
- 12:55Like, that's my spot.
- 12:57So when I go with my wife on a weekend, then it's hard for me to wanna branch out.
- 13:04I'm like, I know I know this place has what I like.
- 13:07I know you're going to find something that you like, but we we very rarely find ourselves
- 13:12wanting to branch out.
- 13:13Usually, it just starts a fight because nobody wants to make the decision to do it.
- 13:17So I I think it's a great thing that that you're doing to kind of open people's borders
- 13:22up a little bit.
- 13:23Right?
- 13:23Expand the horizons.
- 13:25And and not that you're and so nice to do it in a in a public fashion.
- 13:30Right?
- 13:31You're you're out.
- 13:31You're meeting new friends.
- 13:33You are, you know, experiencing this with other people.
- 13:36You're able to maybe try a few more few more dishes than you would if you were just sitting
- 13:42down and ordering two meals.
- 13:44When you show up at a place, do they kind of have it where it's almost buffet style and you
- 13:49have some different options for people to try, you know, appetizers or things like that, or or
- 13:53what is it like?
- 13:54I decide the menu.
- 13:56Everybody eats the same thing. thing.
- 13:59eats Know what we're having.
- 14:01Awesome.
- 14:02Awesome.
- 14:02But you're trying also, you know, nine different things along the route as well.
- 14:07So, well, how awesome.
- 14:10While we're talking, you you've been talking about doing some tours outside of Sioux Falls
- 14:14now.
- 14:14I don't know if you care to divulge any of that, but you asked me for some recommendations
- 14:19on what there is in Tyndall.
- 14:21And, of course, we have our famous bakery here, the best bakery rolls on the planet.
- 14:26I I would challenge anyone to that.
- 14:29But what what does the future of Sioux Falls food tours look like, Dana?
- 14:34Well, last year, we ventured out with a bus tour.
- 14:37So I have self guided food tours as well.
- 14:40And so you just buy it and you go.
- 14:42And it gives you the map of where you're going and tells you what to order.
- 14:45And, so you buy it all the if you order what I suggest you should order, which is always what
- 14:50you should order, then, whatever the amount covers that amount that item.
- 14:59And so last year for celebrate, six zero five days, six zero five is June 5, We did a bus
- 15:06tour to do my I 90 route.
- 15:08So we hit the five stops on the way out to the hills.
- 15:10So you can buy a self guided tour, five stops on the way out to the hills.
- 15:16It's gonna take you about eight hours to get to the hills, but you're gonna stop, and and we're
- 15:21not gonna stop at Waldrug, and we're not stopping at Al's Oasis.
- 15:25We are stopping at other places that you're not gonna necessarily go to unless you follow my
- 15:31route.
- 15:32So we did that tour last year.
- 15:34That was three days, five stops out.
- 15:37We did five stops in the Northern Hills the next day with four stops that evening downtown
- 15:41Rapid City, and then we did five stops back on I 90.
- 15:45So we hit 33 places in three days.
- 15:49Incredible.
- 15:50Incredible.
- 15:50So I actually grew up in Deadwood.
- 15:52So very familiar with some, some hideaways out there, but I love this.
- 15:57I love the idea.
- 15:59As a musician and someone who has been, been around the block quite a few times, I have
- 16:05definitely, found some of the out of the way places, and and then that's what I stick to.
- 16:11So this is twofold for me.
- 16:13Maybe I'm running over, some places that I've forgotten about or I'm being introduced to
- 16:18brand new places that I I've never even heard of or or known that they were there.
- 16:23So I I really love the whole the whole thing is just great, and I love food.
- 16:28I mean, I didn't get to two forty by not by not being a food, advocate, if you will.
- 16:34Also, imbibing in a little bit too much beer too.
- 16:36That probably had a little bit to do with it.
- 16:39Lost a little weight when I gave up drinking myself.
- 16:41But
- 16:42Yeah.
- 16:42Well, it's funny how that happens.
- 16:44Right?
- 16:44You forget about those calories when you're not eating them and you're just drinking them.
- 16:48Yep.
- 16:49Dana, how can we find you?
- 16:51How can people find you online and in person, and where can we get the self guided tours?
- 16:57So Sioux Falls Food Tours, our website if you went to souxfallsfoodtours.com, it would
- 17:01redirect to our website.
- 17:02Our website is sufu food tours, so s f f u s u f u food tours, which really sounds bad when
- 17:10you spell it out.
- 17:13That's like, go to Sioux Falls Food Tours.
- 17:16You'll find us.
- 17:18But there, can buy the self guided tours.
- 17:20You can jump on one of our Saturday tours.
- 17:22You can let me know if you want a private tour.
- 17:25Our bus tour, I don't have that up there, but that will be running again June 5.
- 17:29This time, we're going we're gonna go out Highway 14, and we're gonna come back Highway
- 17:3344.
- 17:35Amazing.
- 17:35I that just keeps expanding.
- 17:37And in another few years, you're gonna have all of South Dakota mapped with, incredible places
- 17:43to stop in and have a bite to eat.
- 17:45So I'm just thrilled that we got to chat today, Dana.
- 17:48Thank you so much for being on the show.
- 17:50Well, thank you so much for having me.
- 17:52This was awesome.
- 17:53Yeah.
- 17:54Well, Dana, I always say thank you for being part of the scene.
