a drink, had gone to bed. She had gone to bed in her son's

room and sometime in the middle of the night, around 3:00, she

decides to go back into bed with her husband, finds him cold and

heavy and just things aren't right and calls 911 and waits.

He's 6 minutes, stalls for 6 minutes to administer CPR and

it's just she was not acting snugly Baron nor sweetie pie nor

one and only that. Let's just put it that way,

That's poorly crafted sentence. Today we had closing arguments.

Now, this is the way it works in the state of Utah.

It happens this way in most places because the prosecution

has the burden of proving beyond a reasonable doubt that you know

the the charges in this case, aggravated murder.

They get to go 1st and make their presentation and then the

defense goes next and the after the defense, the prosecution

gets to rebut. Now on the prosecution's behalf,

today we had Brad Bloodworth giving the closing argument for

the defense. We had Wendy Lewis give the

closing arguments. I have to say I feel a little

bit for Miss Nestor, Miss Lewis and Mr. Ramos, not because I

think that they have an innocent client or anything, but because

they just don't have a lot to work with.

Dateline, Park City, UT, by the way, I wondered why.

I wondered why this was being held in Park City instead of

Coalville, which is the county seat and where the County

Courthouse is. But apparently there's a

District Court in Park City. Prosecutors described Cory

Richins as, quote, intensely ambitious, close quote and

focused on creating the perfect life with her lover as they
11:09
delivered closing arguments in her murder trial on Monday.

I thought that that was a very good characterization.

She isn't. She was not acting the widow.

She was acting the Black Widow. Oh, that that was very well done

by Mr. Bloodworth. Now, the thing that I really

liked about his characterization of Cory Richins wasn't that she

wanted the perfect life. It's that she wanted the
11:40
appearance of a perfect life. He talked about how the way she
11:45
grew up and how she just, she just needed the facade.

She put herself almost $8 million in debt, but she's
11:57
driving around a fancy car. She's living in a fancy house.

She's closing on all these deals, losing money on each and

every one of them. But.

But the facade was important. OK.

Continuing from Lauren's riding, Cory Richins, 35, is charged

with murder and financial crimes in the death of her husband,

Eric Richins, who died from a lethal dose of fentanyl in 2022.

Cory Richins has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Quote, she wanted the perfect life or at least the appearance

of a perfect life, Prosecutor Brad Bloodworth told the jury in
12:33
his closing argument. That life, Bloodworth said,

included living in a midway mansion with her lover, Josh
12:41
Grossman. And for that to happen,
12:44
Bloodworth said, quote, Eric had to die.

Let me just give you now, I don't want you to think that I

am have my finger on the pulse of Summit in Wasatch counties in
12:56
Utah. It's been years and years and
12:57
years since I lived there. But you guys know that this is

Wasatch County, which is where Hebrew City and where Midway is,

is where my parents grew up. And then Summit County is where
13:11
my grandparents grew up. And so, you know, my, my mom's
13:16
parents. So Summit County is my mom's
13:20
side of the family in Wasatch County has always kind of been
13:23
my dad's side of the family for me.

But what happened in in this little area of the Uintas in

Utah over the last 20 years is fascinating from a socio

economic area or perspective. OK, not so long ago, and I would

say 5040, fifty years ago, Park City was a mining town.

And I remember when the first like nice golf course got

installed in there. I was a little kid, it's called

Jeremy Ranch. I remember my dad got comped a
14:07
weekend condo at Jeremy Ranch and and you know, you know, it
14:12
was just a very, very nice place.

It was up and coming. But 40-50 years ago, Park City

was still while there were ski lifts because best snow on
14:19
Earth, right? But while there were ski lifts,
14:22
it still was kind of a mining town when Jackson Hole kind of
14:29
went well, first when Aspen filled up and then when Jackson
14:34
Hole filled up, Park City became the next big thing.

And it just filled with rich people and celebrities.

And it became like this it place the values in real estate

skyrocketed. And then that started to as Park
14:53
City, which is kind of built right on the hill.

Well, it's, it's a mountain right on the Rocky Mountains

kind of going up as that started to fill up with celebrities and
15:07
more ski resorts and destination venues and that sort of stuff.

There wasn't any more place to build in Park City without
15:18
spending tons and tons of money. So that it kind of washed down

the mountain into places like Coalville, Wanship, Piowa,
15:26
Oakley, Marion, Camas, Francis Heber and and Midway and you

know, all all the towns surrounding that whole area,
15:35
right. So Midway, which was kind of a
15:40
kind of fancied itself kind of with roots in Swedish, the
15:44
Swedish colonies from the early Swedish Mormon settlers, it was
15:49
this just picturesque little place.

It became a place that was that, I mean, is kind of like Park

City, right? It, it became very, very
15:59
expensive in comparison to the way it was.

So this idea of owning a 10,012 thousand square foot house in

Midway, UT that it for somebody who cares about the facade that

is yeah, you would want that now.

Now I kind of sympathize. Well, not I kind of empathize

with Corey Richins on this. If I can be brutally honest

about myself, right and and I should be.

When I was a kid, my my family were borderline poor moving up

into the middle class. By the time we moved to
16:39
California, I think we were solidly middle class.

We were still renting for those first few years.

Mom and dad bought a house in a nice neighborhood in a nice

place, and we were solidly in middle class.

But I always dreamed of something more.

I, In fact, all of the girls that I chased all were, were

daughters of doctors and dentists and lawyers and those
17:06
sorts of things, right? The, the people that or
17:10
entrepreneurs, people that had the bigger homes and I just

dreamed and dreamed and dreamed. So I, I kind of get the Corey

Richins thing right? Kind of get it.

Oh, she's ambitious. She wants, she wants the good
17:23
life. The difference, of course.

Well, actually they're, they're, there are other parallels

between and I don't want to make this about me, but I, but it
17:34
goes to her motive, right? It goes to her motive.

It's super important. There was a time in my life when
17:41
the facade was the most important thing.

And I and Kimberly and I went through this thing where we

were, we were flipping houses like crazy in Northern
17:49
California, thinking that we were good at something when the
17:52
reality was it was just you, you had to be an idiot not to be
17:55
able to do it. And you know, earning money

easily by flipping houses became an addiction and it ultimately,

it ultimately did not turn out well for us either, right?

But so I, I, I empathize with Cory Richins wanting this better

life, right? Having been raised, I, I think

I'm trying to remember. And this is, I'm really kind of

going on a tangent here, but let me look at my trying.

Yeah. The prosecution said something

about her dad leaving her mom being a gambling addict.

You know, it's like, that certainly wasn't true with me.

But. But maybe that goes to like, oh,

she just wants a much better life now.

She could have had it. She could have had it without

doing all that other crap because Eric was making bank.

Man, that the guy, that guy brought in a half $1,000,000 the

year leading up to when he died. That is that is not chump

change. That is very a very good living.

Half $1,000,000 in a year is such a good living.

Had Corey just been content with raising her kiddos, you know,

having a happy family, she could have had the good life, but it

wasn't good enough for wasn't good enough for.

thoughts on why. Why did she do this there?

There's something broken in her, right?

But anyway, getting back to Lauren's report, OK, quote, she

wanted the perfect life, at least the appearance of the

Prosecutors have told the jury that Corrie Richins bought

fentanyl from her housekeeper, Carmen Lobber.

Once again, this is an indication that she was living a

pretty darn good life. How many of us have

housekeepers? I certainly don't.

And it's a this is something that that you have if you're if

you're doing well, right? So prosecutors said that the

jury. Prosecutors told the jury that

Cory Richins bought fentanyl from her housekeeper, Carmen

Lauber, and added it to two cocktails she gave her husband

to drink on the evening he died. In an orange notebook found next

to her bed. Cory Richins had written quote,

Moscow Mule and a lemon drop shot and that is consistent with
20:39
all the toxicology, Bloodworth said, continuing the quote.

It's interesting that Cory Richins wrote vodka rum in the
20:47
notebook. The evidence may show that the
20:49
Moscow Mule she made was ginger beer and fentanyl.

The lemon drop may be lemon and fentanyl.

Bloodworth played Cory Richins 911 call for the jury during his

closing argument, pairing the call with a timer that counted

how long it took before CPR began.

Or I think purportedly began right quote the first minute is

the sound of a wife becoming a Black Widow.

He told the jury, listen to how Cory Richins on the 911 call

immediately presents her alibi narrative.

And we have seen this before, have we not the the glaring,

glaring, glaring example to me is this case right.

Sam Goldberg, he calls 911 and he immediate is like I was down

in the gym. I came back right.

He's setting up an alibi in my opinion.

I mean, that's what that's what the evidence shows to me anyway.

And the prosecution in and Corey Richins were saying the same

thing, right? She she is presenting her alibi

Cory's face was amazing during this moment.

He's like, it was so funny. And references Bloodworth made

to the defendant's demeanor, she moved for a mistrial.

At the conclusion of the prosecution's closing argument,

Judge Richard Mrazik agreed to give the jury a curative

instruction, telling it to disregard any statements from

attorneys regarding the defendant's demeanor during the

closing argument. During this time, Mr. Bloodworth

was saying, you know, you could see her demeanor when, you know,

You could see her demeanor when, you know, when the 911 call was

played versus the demeanor when so and so testified about her,

about her finances, right? The the facade is the most

important thing to her. And there was an objection.

And Judge Marazzak was like, overruled.

But after the jury was gone, they definitely talked that one

over, OK. After Eric Richins death, Cory

Richins recorded herself calling the medical examiner's office to

discuss the case again, trying to create a narrative.

I think when she was told the toxicology report showed what's

it called? Ketiapine, an antipsychotic

medication, was in the victim's bloodstream.

Cory Richins asked what that was.

Quote, she pretends not to know what KETIAPINE is or queti.

I can't remember how they pronounced that.

Bloodworth said it's her prescription, of course she

knows what it is. She pretends to not know what it

is to cover up her involvement putting KETIAPINE in inside

a brand name of Seroquel, was prescribed to Cory Richens at

the time of her husband's death. While Bloodworth spoke, Cory

Richens was visible in court, sighing and rolling her eyes.

I was watching on KS LS stream KSL being the Salt Lake like

major news organization and they were showing Cory Richens.

They were showing the Richens family, Eric's dad and sister

and so forth. I I was so glad that they were

cutting away to those shots right to see the reactions in

court. But yeah, Corey was sighing.

She was rolling her eyes. I'd love to hear your thoughts

about what you thought about Corey Richens during the during

the program. Wendy Lewis delivered a close

closing arguments for the defense.

This is Miss Lewis. I I felt bad for Miss Lewis.

I just felt like she didn't have a lot to go on on that one.

She argued the prosecutors failed to present any direct

evidence that Corey Richins killed her husband and instead

Now here it to me is a truth that lies.

And these are these are really important guys.

You will notice this in debates. You'll notice this in arguments

where a a truth can be told, but it either misleads or it lies,

Her argument that prosecutors failed to present any direct

evidence that Cory Richins killed her husband is true.

There is no direct evidence showing that Cory Richens killed

Eric Richens. What there is, is a mountain as

high as the Rockies are above the Salt Lake Valley.

Of circumstantial evidence that just piles and piles and piles.

So any conclusion, any conclusion leap that the

prosecution would be asking the jury to take are millimeters.

They're not leaps, they're not even inches.

They do have to draw conclusions, but that is they

are the judge of the facts, right?

That is their job. They have to come to

conclusions. So, I mean, I felt for her.

She just doesn't have very much to go on here.

But let's continue. Quote, the state looks at facts

one way and sees a witch, Lewis said.

But if you look at those facts another way, you see a widow

Lewis described the police investigation as sloppy,

accusing officers of being biased in their investigation.

She also attacked, excuse me, Oh, Gavin.

testimony describing her as having an intellectual

disability that made her easily influenced by investigators.

I thought that that was actually a pretty effective argument.

And remember, these, these jurors have to be unanimous.

When questioned about the conversation, a private

investigator insisted it was a joke.

Prosecutors presented 13 days of testimony and evidence against

Corey Richins. The defense rested its case

without calling any witnesses. If she's convicted of the top

charge of aggravated murder, Cory Richins faces a potential
