- 0:00Aloha. Sunday morning in Hawaiʻi. Winds are still gusty early on, especially near channels and over the mountains, but they'll ease as the day goes.
- 1:57Windward and upslope areas are seeing scattered showers today, so plan summit trips around wet conditions. Leeward and south-facing shores stay mostly dry. Trade winds will drop to normal trade-wind levels by midweek, and around Wednesday through Thursday, a tropical system weakening northeast of here will send moisture bands over the islands—expect a modest bump in showers, especially windward and mountain-facing slopes on the western half of the state. Most leeward areas will stay dry. A Small Craft Advisory is in effect through tomorrow morning.
- 2:25Oʻahu's south shore is running 4.6 feet—moderate surf with shore break and rip currents. The north shore is 5.1 feet, same conditions. Kauaʻi is firing at 8.2 feet, experienced swimmers and surfers only. Maui is comfortable at 3.2 feet, and the Big Island is glassy and calm at 1.4 feet.
- 2:40Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park has several trails closed this week—Sulfur Banks, Kīpukapuaulu, and bridge work on the Lava Tube Trail. There's also volcanic ash in the area, so protect yourself if you're heading to the summit. Kīlauea is at advisory level. Other parks across the islands are open.
- 2:54Kīlauea had a short eruption episode that ended last Wednesday morning after 7.4 hours. If you're planning a volcano visit this week, we've covered the recent activity in depth—it shows what that episode looked like and walks through what the current advisory means for anyone heading to the park. Also, if you're thinking about fall ocean swaps, our guide to October and November swimming spells out exactly where the safer water is once the winter swells start cranking north shores.
- 3:19The rest of the week stays unsettled on windward slopes through Thursday, then gradually clears. Leeward shores are your best bet through tomorrow.
- 3:26If you're spending today on a leeward beach, the water's gentler there. Catch you tomorrow.
