- 1:27Speaker 2: our DMS about this week. We're talking guys about stingy friends.
- 1:32Speaker 3: No one wants to be that person.
- 1:33Speaker 4: No, that's just lots of.
- 1:35Speaker 2: People are that person. So we're gonna chat about it. Okay,
- 1:38Speaker 2: So before we get there, I want to know, how
- 1:40Speaker 2: have your week's been, mster Grich.
- 1:42Speaker 3: Been doing anything fun but nothing crazy? We had a
- 1:46Speaker 3: secondary flying high huh. Anyone who's playing along at home now.
- 1:51Speaker 2: As we'll just kick you while you're down.
- 1:52Speaker 3: This one was not my fault. This one was not
- 1:54Speaker 3: my fault. We work up at five o'clock in the
- 1:55Speaker 3: morning to the roof and the window leaking, which is
- 1:57Speaker 3: really exciting.
- 1:58Speaker 2: I actually cannot believe your love. I don't know what
- 2:01Speaker 2: what have you done?
- 2:02Speaker 3: I'm like, what did I do to deserve you do something?
- 2:05Speaker 2: Did you do something in a past life where you
- 2:07Speaker 2: just like really really really werenaughty? And then now everyone's like,
- 2:12Speaker 2: let it rain on Jess's house.
- 2:13Speaker 4: It's like manifesting in a funny way, like literally only floods,
- 2:16Speaker 4: but not that, not not only.
- 2:20Speaker 2: She's literally up to three floods in her house in
- 2:22Speaker 2: the last two weeks.
- 2:23Speaker 4: Oh, actually, but your car battery did die. You've broken
- 2:25Speaker 4: aule as well.
- 2:26Speaker 3: So I dressing this weekend? What else did you do
- 2:29Speaker 3: this weekend? I got all the way through a glass
- 2:31Speaker 3: of Pepsi max and what I found at the bottom.
- 2:33Speaker 2: No, no, no, no, no big fat fly? Like no,
- 2:40Speaker 2: absolutely not, absolutely not. I'm having literally the worst week
- 2:42Speaker 2: of mind. You can come live with me.
- 2:44Speaker 4: That's okay, this is weird, Like we need to study this.
- 2:48Speaker 2: I'm not normally this unlucky, you know, she is just
- 2:51Speaker 2: like is perfect normally, So I don't know why she's
- 2:54Speaker 2: being thrown under a bus. But mentioning flies, why are
- 2:57Speaker 2: they everywhere at the moment, I think it's dare because
- 3:01Speaker 2: I can't deal with it. Yeah, I hate I swear
- 3:04Speaker 2: like there are so many flies at the moment and annoying.
- 3:07Speaker 2: Yeah they're in my house, Like where did you come from?
- 3:10Speaker 2: Like my husband opened the back doors and we basically
- 3:12Speaker 2: had a fight because I was like, you close those
- 3:15Speaker 2: flies in my house? One out of ten?
- 3:17Speaker 4: I know, so annoying, but no, I do. I need
- 3:19Speaker 4: to figure out what's going on here. Guess maybe it
- 3:21Speaker 4: did you annoy someone anyway, Well, someone put ext me
- 3:23Speaker 4: do a clean Yeah, we need to do a cleanse.
- 3:25Speaker 4: When we finish this, we'll do a cleanse week. My
- 3:30Speaker 4: week has been really nice, really Christmas y. I'm trying
- 3:33Speaker 4: to like squoize all the Christmasy things in and you know,
- 3:35Speaker 4: just seeing friends and like I'm busy and very tired,
- 3:38Speaker 4: but also really really good my money when is that?
- 3:40Speaker 4: I ended up not going to Meredith, which was.
- 3:43Speaker 2: Very sad, But why did you Meredith?
- 3:46Speaker 4: Well, I just I realized, like I just couldn't afford it.
- 3:48Speaker 2: And okay, that is a very good reason to say
- 3:50Speaker 2: no to something. I'm proud of you. Oh you wouldn't
- 3:53Speaker 2: have done that.
- 3:54Speaker 4: Old me wouldn't have because I had been kind of
- 3:56Speaker 4: talking it up for so long and like I was
- 3:58Speaker 4: messaging everyone I know, even though I didn't have a
- 4:00Speaker 4: I was like, I'm going to Ameretith. I'm going to
- 4:01Speaker 4: Ameretith and put it in my calendar. And old me
- 4:04Speaker 4: definitely would have been like I'm going to find a way.
- 4:06Speaker 4: I'm going to be broke, but I'm going to find
- 4:07Speaker 4: a way. But this song was like so proud of you,
- 4:09Speaker 4: thank you.
- 4:09Speaker 3: So funny you rained all weekend. Yeah, I feel like
- 4:14Speaker 3: that's actually also a life win for you.
- 4:16Speaker 4: That's so true. I do hear it was very muddy,
- 4:19Speaker 4: which is not great, So yeah, win win.
- 4:22Speaker 2: It was really really love it. Did you do something
- 4:24Speaker 2: you just like hung out with friends on the weekend
- 4:26Speaker 2: instead I did.
- 4:27Speaker 4: We had a Christmas night and cute Christmas games and
- 4:31Speaker 4: watch Christmas movies.
- 4:32Speaker 2: That is very very cute, very cute.
- 4:34Speaker 4: And what about you, v As you.
- 4:35Speaker 2: Can probably hear in my voice, I am still not
- 4:37Speaker 2: one hundred percent, which is really frustrating because I feel
- 4:40Speaker 2: really good. But I had what was it a cute
- 4:43Speaker 2: bronchitus last week, which is why you guys had to
- 4:46Speaker 2: take the helm and take one for the team and
- 4:49Speaker 2: do a whole episode without me, which is always honestly terrifying.
- 4:52Speaker 2: So I'm like, what are they going to say? Like
- 4:55Speaker 2: there's just like there's also just like such quick turnaround
- 4:59Speaker 2: without pot cast editing that it means I can't vet
- 5:02Speaker 2: it before it goes live and like change anything because
- 5:05Speaker 2: like you'llow So I haven't listened to it yet, but
- 5:08Speaker 2: I will. I'm just a little bit scared.
- 5:10Speaker 4: Listen, actually we did drag your name through the mud.
- 5:14Speaker 2: I think you absolutely just keep it real and then
- 5:18Speaker 2: Earlier this week, Brooke, who is our video content creator,
- 5:22Speaker 2: she came back from the US, which is really exciting
- 5:25Speaker 2: because she's been there for like three months working. I
- 5:28Speaker 2: guess international. We're international team of girlies. Guys. It's about
- 5:32Speaker 2: as international as we get, let's be honest. But she
- 5:35Speaker 2: came back and we recorded so many videos over the weekend.
- 5:40Speaker 2: We did this whole new series that is called is
- 5:43Speaker 2: It Home Brand? Basically, oh so, like we got out
- 5:46Speaker 2: all of these dupes. We went to the supermarket and
- 5:48Speaker 2: like spent ages going through the aisles and being like, oh,
- 5:51Speaker 2: they're fruit loops, They're dupe loops, like and picked them
- 5:53Speaker 2: all up, and then we did blind taste testings and
- 5:56Speaker 2: if you've already seen it, we've started posting the videos already.
- 6:00Speaker 2: I got absolutely duped by the fake coke. And I'm
- 6:05Speaker 2: really I'm so embarrassed for you.
- 6:07Speaker 3: It's so adamant that you would always be able to
- 6:09Speaker 3: taste the difference.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Yeah, Like I was so clear because I'm such a
- 6:12Speaker 2: Coke zero girlie, Like I don't want diet coke, I
- 6:16Speaker 2: don't want full fat coke. We only drink Coke zero,
- 6:19Speaker 2: Like I am a Coke zero stan like asked yes,
- 6:22Speaker 2: one a day every day.
- 6:24Speaker 5: She loves it.
- 6:25Speaker 2: And then the que cola from Cole's got me q cola.
- 6:29Speaker 2: It was like in a one point two liter bottle
- 6:30Speaker 2: dollar ten money win that is that is money win.
- 6:34Speaker 2: It's a very good money win. But this girley couldn't
- 6:36Speaker 2: tell you the difference to save her life.
- 6:38Speaker 4: That's really cool though. I think that's such a great idea.
- 6:41Speaker 2: It was fun. So we've done like a heap of
- 6:43Speaker 2: those videos and I just got really good snacks over
- 6:46Speaker 2: the weekend.
- 6:46Speaker 3: Guys, I'm excited to see the series roll out to
- 6:49Speaker 3: figure out what I can replace.
- 6:50Speaker 2: Yes, I actually think it's so fun. So if you
- 6:53Speaker 2: have a dupe like at the supermarket that you're like
- 6:55Speaker 2: the home brand one slighs, we need to hear about
- 6:57Speaker 2: it because we'll try it on the show. Yes. Anyway,
- 7:00Speaker 2: let's get back to the community. Mister GRICI, what money
- 7:04Speaker 2: wins do you want to share this week?
- 7:05Speaker 3: My first money in this week comes from Brenda who
- 7:08Speaker 3: said money win and loss. I traded in my old
- 7:11Speaker 3: iPhone six, which I haven't used in years, and I
- 7:14Speaker 3: got a fifty five dollar Apple give cut.
- 7:17Speaker 2: That's cool.
- 7:17Speaker 3: My partner had broken my MacBook laptop charger the next day.
- 7:21Speaker 3: So the money went towards that I didn't even know
- 7:24Speaker 3: you could trade back phones that were that old.
- 7:25Speaker 2: I think I have a few in.
- 7:26Speaker 3: A drawer that I just ow you now, like you're
- 7:28Speaker 3: going to go through my drawer and trade them all
- 7:30Speaker 3: back in. Yeah.
- 7:31Speaker 2: I thought it was going to be only like the
- 7:32Speaker 2: most recent iPhone or something.
- 7:34Speaker 3: Yeah, so that's where good fifty bucks is fifty bucks.
- 7:36Speaker 4: Judging by your luck, they will be like, we're not
- 7:39Speaker 4: taking in fact, we're not taking these, and also we're
- 7:41Speaker 4: charging you.
- 7:43Speaker 2: They're going to charge her Jessica's hext guys. Oh my gosh.
- 7:47Speaker 3: Next, I've got money in from Lily, who said money win.
- 7:50Speaker 3: I put twenty four hours between my spending, and when
- 7:52Speaker 3: I checked back online the dinner set I wanted to buy,
- 7:55Speaker 3: it was half priced down from one twenty nine to
- 7:57Speaker 3: sixty dollars.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Oh that's our money win.
- 8:00Speaker 3: That twenty four hours between you and you're spending pays
- 8:02Speaker 3: off in a big way.
- 8:04Speaker 2: You also got some cash back as well on a
- 8:06Speaker 2: cash back app.
- 8:07Speaker 4: Genius.
- 8:07Speaker 3: Yes, ideally funny that you say that, because my next
- 8:10Speaker 3: money wind comes from a Tara And she said money win.
- 8:12Speaker 3: I was at Chadston when I found a pair of
- 8:14Speaker 3: pants that I loved. I looked up the brand and
- 8:17Speaker 3: they were ten percent cash back on shop back mudey Win.
- 8:20Speaker 3: So I ordered them online instead of on site, and
- 8:23Speaker 3: they were also on special on the website.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Oh so that's such a money double money in. I
- 8:28Speaker 2: feel like that's something I do all the time in store.
- 8:30Speaker 2: It's low key, a little bit like mediocre middle aged
- 8:34Speaker 2: white man, but like I will like google the product
- 8:37Speaker 2: while I'm looking at it in the shop because I'm like,
- 8:39Speaker 2: I'm the best deal on this. If I've decided I
- 8:41Speaker 2: want to buy that, am I going to get cash back?
- 8:44Speaker 2: It's so easy to do, and then also lots of
- 8:46Speaker 2: places price match, so true, it's worth a try.
- 8:50Speaker 4: Absolutely love that. I'm going to start doing that, give
- 8:52Speaker 4: it a crack.
- 8:53Speaker 3: Why not. Next, I've got one from Victoria great name,
- 8:56Speaker 3: who said.
- 8:56Speaker 2: A fantastic name. I must be a genius. Her wing is.
- 8:59Speaker 3: Pretty, she said. I went thirty dollars over my Christmas
- 9:02Speaker 3: gift budget, so I found a candle I already had
- 9:05Speaker 3: to regift, which saved me from having to buy them
- 9:07Speaker 3: a gift, and it put me back within my budget.
- 9:09Speaker 2: Oh. I love that. That's actually so resourceful, very on
- 9:12Speaker 2: brand for a Victoria. That's definitely something I would do,
- 9:15Speaker 2: so clean flay.
- 9:16Speaker 3: Next, I've got a money in from Julie, who said,
- 9:19Speaker 3: not really a money win, but kind of in a
- 9:20Speaker 3: roundabout way. I couldn't find a Christmas shirt that I loved,
- 9:24Speaker 3: so I made one with my own painting. It didn't
- 9:26Speaker 3: cost too much more than those generic ones in the shops,
- 9:29Speaker 3: and I know that it's a keeper and she's put
- 9:30Speaker 3: a really cute picky I looktive. I love this, I've
- 9:37Speaker 3: hus and it's a good way to use, like if
- 9:39Speaker 3: you already have a shirt at home. Yeah, and you'uring
- 9:41Speaker 3: you have one of those Christmas parties where you need
- 9:42Speaker 3: something festive, do a little diy job. Yeah. I love that,
- 9:46Speaker 3: really iconic. Next, I've got one from Grace who said
- 9:50Speaker 3: I've sold fifteen things on deepop since signing up a
- 9:52Speaker 3: few months ago. I've cleaned out my garage and sold
- 9:54Speaker 3: a few things on marketplace. I'm decluttering and I'm making money.
- 9:58Speaker 3: Big win.
- 9:59Speaker 4: Great.
- 10:00Speaker 2: I love that. I love how proactive it is, though,
- 10:02Speaker 2: because how many of us say we're going to do
- 10:04Speaker 2: that and then don't do that. Yes, yes, she's doing it.
- 10:06Speaker 2: Get it, Grace, Well done, Grace.
- 10:07Speaker 3: And lastly, I've got one from al who said money
- 10:10Speaker 3: and feel good win. My daughter's school makes Christmas hampers
- 10:13Speaker 3: for the homeless and families in need. I had one
- 10:16Speaker 3: hundred and ten dollars in Woolworth rewards that I had
- 10:18Speaker 3: forgotten about, so I used it to shop for the
- 10:20Speaker 3: hamper donations. I also ended up getting an extra twenty
- 10:23Speaker 3: dollars on rewards in that shop.
- 10:25Speaker 2: Oh money win. That is very cool, so wholesome.
- 10:28Speaker 3: Yeah, awesome, And another good one for I know a
- 10:30Speaker 3: few weeks here we spoke about people who wanted to
- 10:32Speaker 3: do charitable things but maybe didn't have the budget. If
- 10:35Speaker 3: you ever rewards points, that's such a good way to
- 10:36Speaker 3: use them is use those things that you want to donate.
- 10:39Speaker 2: Genius.
- 10:40Speaker 3: That's everything, guys.
- 10:41Speaker 2: I liked those ones. Yes, I feel like they were
- 10:43Speaker 2: a very wholesome wrap up, a little bit festive, little
- 10:46Speaker 2: bit budget, a little bit saving. I love it anyway,
- 10:49Speaker 2: it seems like very festive. Long yeah, and you're you're
- 10:51Speaker 2: in a festive mood this week?
- 10:52Speaker 4: Back seriously, so right up your alley.
- 10:55Speaker 2: But now I want to know what broke tips. Have
- 10:57Speaker 2: you got for us this week?
- 10:58Speaker 4: Okay? So, as per, I do have two from the
- 11:00Speaker 4: community and one of my own, so I know, just
- 11:04Speaker 4: to just to like mix it up a little bit
- 11:07Speaker 4: up a little bit, be a little bit different. So
- 11:08Speaker 4: the first one comes from Rhiannon and this.
- 11:10Speaker 2: One is a little bit festive, so I love a
- 11:12Speaker 2: festive money in Yeah, I feel like this one we
- 11:14Speaker 2: may have mentioned before. That's okay.
- 11:15Speaker 4: I thought it's a really good time to just kind
- 11:17Speaker 4: of like emphasize how great this is. So Brandon says
- 11:21Speaker 4: that in wool Ways, they have these cute Christmas designs
- 11:23Speaker 4: on their paper bags. You can cut the bottom of
- 11:25Speaker 4: it and use it as wrapping paper. So if you
- 11:27Speaker 4: shop the all Wards a lot, maybe if you get
- 11:29Speaker 4: your reusable bag and you have to buy the paper bags,
- 11:32Speaker 4: that also doubles as wrapping paper, which I think is
- 11:34Speaker 4: really cool.
- 11:34Speaker 2: It love there.
- 11:35Speaker 3: I saw someone on Instagram use their paper bag. They
- 11:39Speaker 3: slipped it so that the writing was on the inside
- 11:41Speaker 3: and they used it to wrap like a handpicked bouquet,
- 11:43Speaker 3: which is another really much use for it as well.
- 11:46Speaker 3: Like they kicked they think the flowers from their garden
- 11:48Speaker 3: know something and they wrapped its like a beautiful little
- 11:49Speaker 3: boutique bouquet, very cute, humble paper bag can do a lot.
- 11:53Speaker 2: I've said this a few times on the podcast before,
- 11:55Speaker 2: but I literally refuse to buy holiday wrapping paper. It
- 11:59Speaker 2: is so ex defensive. So a couple of years ago,
- 12:02Speaker 2: I went to office works and I bought a really
- 12:05Speaker 2: big roll of craft paper, you know, like the brown
- 12:08Speaker 2: craft paper, and I think it was like thirty meters
- 12:11Speaker 2: or something ridiculous, and it was like fifteen dollars. It's
- 12:14Speaker 2: all I've been using for wrapping, so you will always
- 12:17Speaker 2: get a present from me wrapped in brown paper. And
- 12:20Speaker 2: then I juse it up with like some fancy like
- 12:22Speaker 2: string I get from the two dollar shop or something.
- 12:24Speaker 2: Then everything under the tree matches, and people think that
- 12:27Speaker 2: I'm being like, oh, look, how aesthetics she is. No,
- 12:30Speaker 2: I'm cheap Like. The answer is cheapness, not aesthetics. But
- 12:34Speaker 2: you know what, I like that you think I think
- 12:36Speaker 2: that is going to work.
- 12:38Speaker 4: I do love brown wrapping papers very.
- 12:40Speaker 2: It's like a little bit rustic, a little bit helpful. Also,
- 12:42Speaker 2: you could juse it up even more by like going
- 12:44Speaker 2: to like Bunnings and getting some like Hessian string like
- 12:47Speaker 2: tying Hessian string and putting like a few gum leaves
- 12:50Speaker 2: or something in it. So cheap, so cute, so.
- 12:53Speaker 4: Cheap, you could draw a little festive Okay, I'm not
- 12:57Speaker 4: you are.
- 12:58Speaker 2: People would be like, hey, v I'm just wondering, why
- 13:00Speaker 2: did a toddler decorate your presence this year? And I'd
- 13:03Speaker 2: be like, that was me. I tried. I tried. It's
- 13:06Speaker 2: the thought that counts.
- 13:07Speaker 4: You can't yet blame that on your baby.
- 13:09Speaker 2: No, no, but I will be what's your second broke
- 13:14Speaker 2: tip from the community? Back?
- 13:15Speaker 4: So this next one comes from Michelle. This one, I
- 13:18Speaker 4: really do like it because I feel like this is
- 13:19Speaker 4: the reality for a lot of people. So back in
- 13:22Speaker 4: the day, when her and her family couldn't afford heat packs,
- 13:25Speaker 4: they would fill an empty one point two liter soft
- 13:28Speaker 4: drink bottle with hot water. The lid would screw on
- 13:30Speaker 4: tights and new leaks, and if you wrap it in
- 13:32Speaker 4: a tea towel with a rubber band, you have a
- 13:33Speaker 4: reusable heat pack. So that is really, really, it's a
- 13:37Speaker 4: really clever way to kind of like make it through
- 13:39Speaker 4: the winter. If you're like in a position where you
- 13:41Speaker 4: literally can't afford a heat pack, you literally can't afford heating.
- 13:44Speaker 2: Snaggy, you can cud of let in bed now.
- 13:47Speaker 4: Exactly obviously, you know, don't put boiling water because your
- 13:51Speaker 4: bottle me. Yeah, just so nice, just the I think
- 13:54Speaker 4: like when you just turin on the hot tap, like
- 13:55Speaker 4: it doesn't actually get too hot these days anyway, that
- 13:58Speaker 4: should do and that will ask you hopefull of the night.
- 14:00Speaker 4: Which yeah, I love this. I actually really like this
- 14:03Speaker 4: broke tip and my one. This one is not so
- 14:07Speaker 4: broke that you can't use Uber. This is like I
- 14:10Speaker 4: can use Uber, but I'm also trying to save money.
- 14:12Speaker 4: So I've noticed that if I'm trying to order an Uber,
- 14:16Speaker 4: I'll go into the Uber app, I'll put in my destination.
- 14:20Speaker 4: I'll leave the app three, four, maybe five times. So
- 14:24Speaker 4: you got to start this early.
- 14:25Speaker 2: You can't be meet.
- 14:27Speaker 4: You got to start this very early. Each time you
- 14:30Speaker 4: leave the app, it gives you a little discount. I
- 14:32Speaker 4: know this what happened all the time, but with me,
- 14:33Speaker 4: it did. It went I was getting an Uber from
- 14:36Speaker 4: my friend and I was kind of just like waiting
- 14:38Speaker 4: for her response. So this was just completely accidental that
- 14:41Speaker 4: I happened upon this. It started at about thirty dollars,
- 14:44Speaker 4: and then it went all the way down to I
- 14:46Speaker 4: literally think from memory it was thirteen dollars. It went
- 14:50Speaker 4: from thirty dollars to thirteen.
- 14:52Speaker 2: Dollars just like a thirde time.
- 14:54Speaker 4: No, it wasn't, it was just a regular time. It
- 14:56Speaker 4: just kept like saying, hey, are you forgetting something or
- 14:58Speaker 4: you know this is still just do you need to ride?
- 15:00Speaker 4: Here's twenty percent off, blah blah blah. It went all
- 15:02Speaker 4: the way down. I just couldn't believe it. So while
- 15:06Speaker 4: I was waiting for her response, I just kept like
- 15:07Speaker 4: opening it and seeing what it's a going out of
- 15:10Speaker 4: it again and blah blah blah. So I just it
- 15:11Speaker 4: was completely accidental. And so now anytime I need an Uber,
- 15:14Speaker 4: I do this and it maybe it takes about ten minutes,
- 15:18Speaker 4: but give it a try.
- 15:20Speaker 2: I like that. I've been using d D recently because
- 15:24Speaker 2: I feel like when Uber's surging and I'm like, I'm
- 15:27Speaker 2: not paying those surg prices, I go on DD and
- 15:29Speaker 2: then I get a good ride whatever. Half the time
- 15:32Speaker 2: they come, the car comes and it's got the Uber
- 15:34Speaker 2: sticker on it because the drivers are using both app
- 15:37Speaker 2: switch get it Queen's But my favorite thing about dd is.
- 15:41Speaker 2: If you don't use it for a while, they send
- 15:42Speaker 2: you vouchers. They're like, oh, here's ten dollars off your
- 15:45Speaker 2: next ride, and you're like, ha ha, I'll just stah
- 15:48Speaker 2: that one away for future game the system. I'm all
- 15:51Speaker 2: about gaming the system. I love that back. I feel
- 15:53Speaker 2: like that was very wholesome, little bit festive, little bit smart. Also, yeah,
- 15:58Speaker 2: good money wins. Absolutely, I'm just fish. Let's go to
- 16:01Speaker 2: a really quick break and on the flip side, we're
- 16:03Speaker 2: going to be unpacking how to make your superwork harder
- 16:05Speaker 2: for you, which is definitely something we all want. But
- 16:08Speaker 2: then after that we're getting to the spicy conversation of
- 16:11Speaker 2: talking about your stingy friends. And I think all of
- 16:13Speaker 2: us like a little bit of goss, So don't go anywhere.
- 16:20Speaker 3: Welcome back everyone. Let's take a listen to this week's
- 16:22Speaker 3: money dilemma.
- 16:25Speaker 6: Hi, there, have you got a money dilemma you just
- 16:28Speaker 6: can't solve that. She's on the Money Team is here
- 16:30Speaker 6: to help. Every week we tackle your dilemmas, both big
- 16:34Speaker 6: and small, to answer your most burning money.

- 16:37Speaker 6: To get involved, simply head to our website and leave
- 16:40Speaker 6: us a short voice recording and you might just find
- 16:42Speaker 6: yourself on the show. Now, let's take a listen to
- 16:45Speaker 6: this week's Money Dilemma.
- 16:49Speaker 5: Hi, she's on the Money team. Love the podcast and
- 16:52Speaker 5: all that you do. In the spirit of financial literacy
- 16:55Speaker 5: and investing in my future, I've spoken to a super
- 16:58Speaker 5: annuation management firm. They've estimated they could increase my super
- 17:02Speaker 5: from roughly seven hundred K to one point two million
- 17:05Speaker 5: over a thirty year period through a super fund account manager.
- 17:09Speaker 5: Obviously this is appealing, but I don't want to go
- 17:11Speaker 5: in blind. Their fee is three k one off and
- 17:14Speaker 5: then one point six percent fee per anim of my
- 17:16Speaker 5: super amount. In addition, I would have access to their
- 17:19Speaker 5: team of financial advisors and mortgage broker for free. I
- 17:23Speaker 5: want to engage these services and feel like this could
- 17:25Speaker 5: be a great one stop shop. But are these fees typical?
- 17:29Speaker 5: I know nothing is guaranteed in terms of future super performance,
- 17:32Speaker 5: but want to optimize what I can as early as possible.
- 17:35Speaker 2: I'm not going to comment yet because I want your comments. Guys.
- 17:39Speaker 2: How do you feel about that, Jess? I know you
- 17:41Speaker 2: know a little bit about like financial advice fees. What
- 17:43Speaker 2: are your thoughts and feelings?
- 17:45Speaker 3: I just my thoughts on financial advice in general, whether
- 17:50Speaker 3: that's an advisor, whether that's mortgages, whether that's investments, is
- 17:53Speaker 3: that if they're approaching you, I'm always.
- 17:58Speaker 2: Sus I'm so glad you've said that because I let
- 18:00Speaker 2: you go first, because I'm like sitting here with red
- 18:03Speaker 2: flag every we're all over this.
- 18:06Speaker 4: Also, they're saying I will get you from seven hundred
- 18:08Speaker 4: thousand to well at one point.
- 18:10Speaker 3: I don't know if maybe you've misunderstood the wording here
- 18:14Speaker 3: is just not making sense to me, because if they're
- 18:16Speaker 3: saying that they can take you from seven hundred thousand
- 18:19Speaker 3: to one point two million and thirty years using our
- 18:22Speaker 3: favorite compound interest calculator, Yeah, I can tell you that
- 18:25Speaker 3: if you had seven hundred thousand dollars and you did
- 18:28Speaker 3: quite frankly, not a whole lot with it.
- 18:30Speaker 2: Tell me, tell me the specs you put it in.
- 18:31Speaker 3: Jest, put it in assuming no additional deposits. You just
- 18:35Speaker 3: have that seven hundred thousand that she's saying that it's
- 18:37Speaker 3: there over at thirty year period, assuming an average rate
- 18:40Speaker 3: of return of seven point five percent.
- 18:41Speaker 2: Which is what actually is on the money we always use.
- 18:44Speaker 2: It is a little bit lower, a little bit more
- 18:46Speaker 2: conservative than the average rate of return of the Australian
- 18:48Speaker 2: shair market. Good job, es, I go, I'm out of
- 18:51Speaker 2: a job that.
- 18:52Speaker 3: She just told me. Well, we're estimating that you would
- 18:54Speaker 3: have about six million, five hundred ninety and seventy four dollars. Yeah,
- 18:59Speaker 3: so in two million is severely underperforming, like union.
- 19:02Speaker 2: Yeah, you're not even doing the bare minimum, sir, Like
- 19:05Speaker 2: even if we drop it down right, because I think
- 19:07Speaker 2: Jess is doing exactly what I was doing, Let's pretend
- 19:09Speaker 2: it's an average rate of return of five percent. Because
- 19:11Speaker 2: if you've got seven hundred grand, girl, you are doing well. Yeah,
- 19:14Speaker 2: so can we talk about how you got seven hundred
- 19:16Speaker 2: grand in super, because like I need to know that story.
- 19:19Speaker 2: But if you've got seven hundred thousand dollars in super,
- 19:22Speaker 2: even if it's at a rate of return of five
- 19:25Speaker 2: percent BECK over thirty years, that's three point one million dollars. Wow.
- 19:29Speaker 2: So like, these guys, what do you need them for?
- 19:31Speaker 3: And you're paying them three grand?
- 19:32Speaker 2: Off the topic, I am always so skeptical of these
- 19:36Speaker 2: superanuation management firms because usually, and I'm probably going to
- 19:41Speaker 2: make some people in the industry really angry, and I
- 19:43Speaker 2: kind of don't care. Usually, if you are a superanuation
- 19:46Speaker 2: management company, you're a burn and churn company. You usually
- 19:51Speaker 2: buy lists of people's phone numbers and you call them
- 19:55Speaker 2: and go, hey, Beck, we're a supermanagement firm, like we
- 19:57Speaker 2: can help you. And you go, oh my gosh, so
- 19:59Speaker 2: your license. So they go, yeah, yeah, we just got
- 20:01Speaker 2: given your number. Thought you were a good person to call.
- 20:04Speaker 2: This happens all the time. We see it in our
- 20:05Speaker 2: community so often. To be honest, you would be better
- 20:10Speaker 2: off not paying a financial advisor to give you superannuation
- 20:14Speaker 2: only advice for three thousand dollars and staying with a
- 20:17Speaker 2: default fund in a balanced portfolio, like you would be
- 20:21Speaker 2: financially better off by going on the money Smart website
- 20:25Speaker 2: and having a look at your super comparison tool and
- 20:28Speaker 2: picking that. I'm not saying that that's what you should do,
- 20:31Speaker 2: because if you've got seven hundred grand in super Girl,
- 20:33Speaker 2: you are doing incredibly and you definitely should see an advisor,
- 20:37Speaker 2: but you should see a holistic wealth advisor, someone who's
- 20:41Speaker 2: going to go, well, what goals are we trying to achieve?
- 20:43Speaker 2: What does this actually look like? Why have you got
- 20:45Speaker 2: seven hundred grand in super I'm assuming if you have
- 20:47Speaker 2: that much in super you're probably doing well outside of
- 20:50Speaker 2: it and need some budget and cash flow help and
- 20:52Speaker 2: some investing help, because that shouldn't be your only wealth
- 20:55Speaker 2: creation asset. But to me, it's a massive red flag
- 20:59Speaker 2: if they're then saying, but it's a really good deal, Jessica,
- 21:03Speaker 2: you can get access to our financial advisors and mortgage brokers.
- 21:06Speaker 2: I'm sorry. Mortgage brokers are free to begin with. Like, legally,
- 21:10Speaker 2: mortgage brokers cannot charge you for their services. And as
- 21:15Speaker 2: somebody who owns a mortgage broking firm called Zella Money,
- 21:18Speaker 2: I don't like, and this is coming from someone who
- 21:21Speaker 2: used to also own a financial advice firm, you cannot
- 21:25Speaker 2: be brilliant at everything. I picked one way and said,
- 21:29Speaker 2: all right, I'm gonna have to step back because you know,
- 21:32Speaker 2: as the director of Zellowealth and Zella Money, they're conflicting.
- 21:37Speaker 2: They need so much of my time to be successful.
- 21:40Speaker 2: Zello Wealth wasn't taking on new clients, and they weren't
- 21:43Speaker 2: taking on new clients because I would be like, look,
- 21:45Speaker 2: I don't have the capacity between she's on the money
- 21:47Speaker 2: and growing this mortgage broking business to do the right
- 21:50Speaker 2: thing by clients. So I'm not taking anyone new, but
- 21:54Speaker 2: if you're doing mortgage broking and financial advice in this
- 21:57Speaker 2: economic situation where there's so much clients, I don't think
- 22:00Speaker 2: you can be good at both. Like, and I don't
- 22:03Speaker 2: mean to be rude, because I do have friends who
- 22:05Speaker 2: own mortgage broking and financial advice companies, but they're not
- 22:08Speaker 2: usually volume based companies.
- 22:10Speaker 3: Right.
- 22:10Speaker 2: They might be like, Oh, Bet comes in and we
- 22:12Speaker 2: help her along the way, and that can be really great, Like,
- 22:15Speaker 2: it can be a fantastic service. However, if I'm going
- 22:18Speaker 2: to go get a mortgage, like we know Jess is
- 22:20Speaker 2: on her first home by a journey, Jess, I know
- 22:24Speaker 2: benefits from working with someone who forty hours a week,
- 22:28Speaker 2: day in, day out, talks about mortgages, talks to the banks,
- 22:32Speaker 2: is completely across it, so that when Jess' is like, oh,
- 22:34Speaker 2: what's this mean, they're like, Oh, it's talking to Westpac yesterday,
- 22:37Speaker 2: That's what this means. Where As often when you're a
- 22:40Speaker 2: financial advisor and a mortgage broker, you don't do that
- 22:43Speaker 2: much mortgage work because the financial advice work takes so
- 22:45Speaker 2: long and you're not as in touch with what's currently
- 22:48Speaker 2: going on and with the interest rates going up and
- 22:50Speaker 2: everything kind of in a shamble. You want someone who
- 22:53Speaker 2: has their finger on the pulse, but like every second,
- 22:57Speaker 2: not you know, once or twice a week. So I'm
- 22:59Speaker 2: quite I don't know, assertive. That's why I like you
- 23:02Speaker 2: having independent experts who are great in their field, and
- 23:05Speaker 2: you build a little team that works for you, not
- 23:08Speaker 2: necessarily going to a one stop shop, because, don't get
- 23:11Speaker 2: me wrong, sounds perfect in theory, it's not necessarily going
- 23:14Speaker 2: to work out that way because they're often like, oh,
- 23:17Speaker 2: it's just a hygiene factor. Oh, just as one of
- 23:19Speaker 2: our financial advice clients she needs a mortgage, can you
- 23:22Speaker 2: just get her one? Yeah, just honestly, whatever goes through easiest.
- 23:25Speaker 2: It's not putting just in the best possible position. So
- 23:28Speaker 2: to me, I'm gonna get a lot of hate for that.
- 23:30Speaker 2: I'm going to don't care because I'm not even an
- 23:33Speaker 2: advisor anymore. But these supermanagement companies or firms or whatever
- 23:36Speaker 2: they're calling themselves, if they only do super and they're
- 23:39Speaker 2: giving you access to their you know, super advisors, you
- 23:44Speaker 2: don't really need that. You're probably getting it free already
- 23:47Speaker 2: through your super fund. And for three thousand dollars to
- 23:50Speaker 2: do initial advice for only one stream, that's a lot.
- 23:55Speaker 3: Who's your first thought because we've spoken about this before,
- 24:00Speaker 3: but I feel like you're more similar to our listener
- 24:02Speaker 3: in that have you been approach based on I like
- 24:04Speaker 3: this before.
- 24:05Speaker 4: What would your instinct be if you were totally well
- 24:07Speaker 4: like as you guys know, I used to like kind
- 24:09Speaker 4: of work in super but I didn't initially think about
- 24:14Speaker 4: how that looked over thirty years. Like Jess, I think
- 24:17Speaker 4: you were like on top of it and you were like,
- 24:18Speaker 4: this seems really low but math math, and I guess,
- 24:22Speaker 4: like my my first red flag, maybe maybe my only,
- 24:26Speaker 4: because I'm not it was it was a while ago,
- 24:29Speaker 4: you guys, so my you know, it's not fresh in
- 24:31Speaker 4: the mind. But my first and maybe only red flag
- 24:34Speaker 4: was that if someone's guaranteeing any kind of grow.
- 24:38Speaker 2: Yes, that's a red flag in well.
- 24:41Speaker 4: No matter what it looks like, no matter like if
- 24:43Speaker 4: it's pretty much guaranteed like in this case, like seven
- 24:46Speaker 4: hundred thousand dollars, it's probably going to grow in thirty years.
- 24:49Speaker 4: But even then, like guaranteeing growth in any situation, I'm
- 24:52Speaker 4: kind of like red flag that's not okay. Yeah, I
- 24:54Speaker 4: like totally.
- 24:55Speaker 2: I like that also, Jess, that seven hundred thousand dollars
- 25:00Speaker 2: to quote guarantee growth to one point two million dollars.
- 25:03Speaker 2: That's promising a two percent interest rate return over thirty years. Yeah,
- 25:07Speaker 2: are you happy with two percent?
- 25:09Speaker 4: Yes?
- 25:09Speaker 3: I'm getting more on my savings acount right now. I'm
- 25:12Speaker 3: hanning like double that on my seat exactly.
- 25:15Speaker 2: We don't settle here nor bye. I think we'll wrap
- 25:18Speaker 2: it there because I obviously don't want to go too
- 25:21Speaker 2: too far into this but money dilemma person, could you
- 25:25Speaker 2: please DM me that company? Because I love this us
- 25:29Speaker 2: Yess the amount of times people dam me the companies
- 25:31Speaker 2: that have like approached them. And then Jess and I
- 25:33Speaker 2: sit at my laptop and I'm like, look at their pds,
- 25:36Speaker 2: look at this, look at that, let's have a read
- 25:37Speaker 2: through their license, what their heck? How do they get
- 25:39Speaker 2: away with this? Look at their fees? Because if they're
- 25:42Speaker 2: managing you're super right. I don't mean to be rude again.
- 25:45Speaker 2: There are lots of financial advisors who are very actively
- 25:48Speaker 2: managing super in a very very constructive way. And if
- 25:51Speaker 2: you need a financial advisor and you're looking at this
- 25:53Speaker 2: going v where the heck and do I go. You
- 25:56Speaker 2: can actually just go to our website and one of
- 25:58Speaker 2: my team members will at you with one of our
- 26:01Speaker 2: pre vetted financial advisors or mortgage brokers to make sure
- 26:05Speaker 2: you're in the best possible position. It's kind of like
- 26:07Speaker 2: I'm at you with my squad to make sure you're
- 26:09Speaker 2: not getting screwed over, which I think is smart. But
- 26:13Speaker 2: why such a high ongoing fee to manage super which
- 26:16Speaker 2: is essentially set and forget in a way that is
- 26:20Speaker 2: very Why are we doing that?
- 26:22Speaker 4: You guys are vigilantes and I love it.
- 26:24Speaker 2: I'm not having it. I'm not having it back, but
- 26:27Speaker 2: I think we'll leave it there. So if anyone wants
- 26:28Speaker 2: to slide into my dms with their financial advice fake companies,
- 26:32Speaker 2: not fake but a red flag companies flag, I feel
- 26:36Speaker 2: free because I love the goss. I love the drama.
- 26:38Speaker 2: I'm here for it. But you know what else, I.
- 26:40Speaker 4: Love more goss and more drama.
- 26:43Speaker 2: Let's talk about the conundrum that you guys slid into
- 26:46Speaker 2: our dams about this week? Are you strapped in, locked
- 26:48Speaker 2: and loaded and ready?
- 26:49Speaker 4: I am so ready?
- 26:51Speaker 2: You are ready? All right? So here's the dam. Hey,
- 26:53Speaker 2: she's on the money team. I have a money, lamb
- 26:55Speaker 2: before you. Yes, one of our friends is chronically stingy.
- 27:00Speaker 2: She earns a very good wage. Her husband also earns
- 27:02Speaker 2: a good income. Combined income, I reckon would be more
- 27:05Speaker 2: than three hundred thousand dollars, and she comes from a
- 27:08Speaker 2: very wealthy family. She invited twenty friends over for a
- 27:11Speaker 2: barbecue for her birthday and originally said that she's doing
- 27:14Speaker 2: a barbecue just byo your own booth. On the day
- 27:17Speaker 2: of the barbecue, she messages everyone again and tells everyone
- 27:20Speaker 2: that they have bought twenty four sausages for twenty people
- 27:24Speaker 2: and have some nibbles, and if you want something else
- 27:26Speaker 2: for the barbecue, then you need to bring whatever you
- 27:29Speaker 2: would want for yourself. I get that we're at a
- 27:32Speaker 2: cost of living crisis, but honestly, we are thirty three
- 27:34Speaker 2: and she could have easily spent one hundred dollars to
- 27:37Speaker 2: cater enough food for everybody. We not broke UNI students anymore.
- 27:41Speaker 2: What should we do? Do we call her out for
- 27:44Speaker 2: being stingy? Do we just accept it's her and move on? Help?
- 27:48Speaker 4: See, I have my best friend is just like this. Literally,
- 27:53Speaker 4: her birthday are two weeks ago. Everyone brought their own
- 27:56Speaker 4: food for the barbecue. She kind of like framed it
- 27:59Speaker 4: as a barbecue, and then everyone just knew to bring
- 28:01Speaker 4: her own food because we love her and we accept her.
- 28:04Speaker 4: She makes a lot of money.
- 28:05Speaker 2: But since your friend, babe, I just think it's okay.
- 28:10Speaker 4: I just think it's okay. I guess maybe give people
- 28:12Speaker 4: more notice. Feel like, hey, I'm having a barbecue. I
- 28:14Speaker 4: don't want to buy food for everyone, so I'll provide nibbles.
- 28:17Speaker 4: You just bring whatever meat you feel like eating on
- 28:20Speaker 4: the day, and we'll have like a nice I've been.
- 28:22Speaker 2: To lots of barbecues like that. We're gonna have a
- 28:24Speaker 2: barbecue at my place. I'm going to do a few salads,
- 28:26Speaker 2: bring whatever you want to chuck on the barbie. Totally
- 28:29Speaker 2: like drinks. That's fine.
- 28:30Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I.
- 28:31Speaker 2: Think it's completely fine.
- 28:32Speaker 4: And like, honestly, three hundred thousand for two people in
- 28:35Speaker 4: this economy. I mean, obviously I'm not making anyone new,
- 28:39Speaker 4: even one of them, but I just think due to
- 28:43Speaker 4: the economy right now, due to the cost of living, due.
- 28:45Speaker 2: To what do you call it V when you lifestyle creep.
- 28:48Speaker 4: Yes, lifestyle creep and all these things, I'm like, you know,
- 28:51Speaker 4: it's probably not even that March at the end of
- 28:55Speaker 4: the day, you know what I mean, Like, it's a
- 28:57Speaker 4: lot for some people, but for someone who's kind of
- 29:00Speaker 4: this lifestyle for a long time, it's probably not that much.
- 29:03Speaker 4: Like I say, little Bee, I think she's allowed.
- 29:06Speaker 2: I'm laughing because I feel like I know what Jess
- 29:09Speaker 2: is gonna say, because like she's got an Italian background haha.
- 29:12Speaker 2: And like I had like a little dinner the other
- 29:15Speaker 2: night with a couple of girlfriends over and Jess was there,
- 29:18Speaker 2: and like I said, now it's all catered, like booze
- 29:20Speaker 2: and food, don't worry, don't bring anything. She still brought stuff.
- 29:23Speaker 2: Obviously it's Jess. So I'm just like, what is your thoughts, Jess.
- 29:26Speaker 3: I'm kind of into minds because I do if I
- 29:29Speaker 3: was to host personally, I would take care of everything.
- 29:33Speaker 3: But I think it's a very dangerous game to start
- 29:35Speaker 3: implying that just because someone earns more than you, they
- 29:39Speaker 3: should or should not be able to pay more for something.
- 29:44Speaker 3: And I guess the timeframe thing is definitely I suppose
- 29:47Speaker 3: the here for me. I think if you want people
- 29:51Speaker 3: to bring their own stuff, that's so fine. Set that
- 29:53Speaker 3: expectation at the beginning, invite them to the part. Yeah,
- 29:56Speaker 3: because some people might be in the position where they
- 29:58Speaker 3: can't afford to bring a plate or can't afford to something,
- 30:00Speaker 3: and so you know, they're saying yes based on assuming
- 30:03Speaker 3: that it's all catered. Then they realize that they have
- 30:05Speaker 3: to help Kate. So I think that that is the
- 30:07Speaker 3: thing that I don't necessarily agree with, but I think that, yeah,
- 30:10Speaker 3: you're right, Like, if that's the way that you want
- 30:12Speaker 3: to do it, maybe they just couldn't be both cooking everything,
- 30:14Speaker 3: you know, or maybe there's another reason that isn't necessarily stinginess.
- 30:19Speaker 3: But I don't think that setting that boundary is necessarily
- 30:22Speaker 3: a bad thing. Yeah, it's different in different friend groups too.
- 30:25Speaker 3: If everybody else when they host caters for everybody and
- 30:29Speaker 3: they're the one friend that isn't doing that, you know,
- 30:32Speaker 3: and you want to have a conversation about that by
- 30:34Speaker 3: all means, But I think be really gentle because you
- 30:36Speaker 3: don't know what someone's finances look like.
- 30:38Speaker 2: Either.
- 30:38Speaker 3: You don't know if they're paying off huge amounts of debt.
- 30:41Speaker 3: You know, maybe they've got this nice lifestyle but they're
- 30:43Speaker 3: living on credit cards or whatever. Like I just think
- 30:45Speaker 3: that the I'm kind of taking it away from the
- 30:48Speaker 3: original question. But I think the thing that I'm that
- 30:50Speaker 3: I don't love in this dilemma is that the idea
- 30:53Speaker 3: that just because somebody earns more, that they should have
- 30:57Speaker 3: a responsibility to be more financially responsible, which isn't completely watching.
- 31:01Speaker 2: Is their budget not your budget?
- 31:03Speaker 3: Yeah, and I know that that's not really what our
- 31:05Speaker 3: dilimma person is staying either, But I'm just conscious of
- 31:09Speaker 3: that school of thought I think can be a little
- 31:11Speaker 3: bit dangerous or unfair, but it is difficult. Like if
- 31:15Speaker 3: your friend is always doing this and everyone else is
- 31:17Speaker 3: paying that, I can see where that would be irritating
- 31:19Speaker 3: to Yes.
- 31:20Speaker 2: I think the question needs to be broken into two
- 31:22Speaker 2: questions because I think that there's clearly some underlying stuff
- 31:26Speaker 2: going on in addition to this. Right, So the first
- 31:30Speaker 2: question and the real question here is my friend organized
- 31:34Speaker 2: to barbecue. She's having twenty people over and she said
- 31:37Speaker 2: she's doing the barbecue. Jest, you need to bring the boost.
- 31:40Speaker 2: All of that's fine. Last minute she tells you you
- 31:44Speaker 2: need to organize some food for yourself to bring to
- 31:46Speaker 2: this party.
- 31:47Speaker 3: Not good enough.
- 31:48Speaker 2: I go, oh, that's just annoying, because like I'm the
- 31:51Speaker 2: type of person who'd want to prep something and chuck
- 31:53Speaker 2: it in the fridge the night before, or go to
- 31:55Speaker 2: the supermarket, or have a think about like, oh, I
- 31:58Speaker 2: really want to get this thing from Audi. Like to me,
- 32:01Speaker 2: going to somebody else's house and taking something requires a
- 32:04Speaker 2: bit more planning than just popping past calls on the
- 32:06Speaker 2: way there. I totally could pop class calls on the
- 32:08Speaker 2: way there and pick up a container of snags and
- 32:11Speaker 2: it should not be an issue because I was probably
- 32:14Speaker 2: going to make lunch at home anyway.
- 32:15Speaker 6: Right.
- 32:16Speaker 2: So that's the question. During a cost of living crisis,
- 32:20Speaker 2: can you at the last minute bring another budget thing
- 32:23Speaker 2: on somebody else and be like, oh, hey, that barbecue
- 32:26Speaker 2: I'm having today, you actually have to go buy some
- 32:28Speaker 2: more stuff for it.
- 32:29Speaker 3: Not last minute?
- 32:30Speaker 2: Not last minute? Not fair. I think that that, to
- 32:33Speaker 2: me is the question. The underlying issue here, to me,
- 32:36Speaker 2: is actually more about the person that's written in. I
- 32:39Speaker 2: want to know why you care so much about what
- 32:42Speaker 2: your friend is earning and what they're doing with their money.
- 32:45Speaker 2: Why are you guessing how much that combined household has
- 32:50Speaker 2: in income we know in today's world. And I wrote
- 32:54Speaker 2: an article in the Age and the City Morning Herald
- 32:56Speaker 2: a couple of weeks ago about this that the average
- 33:00Speaker 2: or the average couple purchasing a home now needs three
- 33:04Speaker 2: hundred thousand dollars worth of income to be really comfortable.
- 33:08Speaker 2: So we're not talking and I'm not saying that that's
- 33:11Speaker 2: normal by any stretch of the imagination. But here you
- 33:14Speaker 2: are going, Oh, well, her husband earns a good income
- 33:17Speaker 2: and she earns good money, and they should serve me.
- 33:20Speaker 2: She comes from a wealthy family. What's that got to
- 33:23Speaker 2: do with her catering your barbecue? She wanted to have
- 33:26Speaker 2: a social gathering because the end of the day. I
- 33:28Speaker 2: was at my house one day and I was like,
- 33:30Speaker 2: I'd love to have Beck over for dinner. That's the conversation,
- 33:34Speaker 2: not what my history is, what my background is, what
- 33:37Speaker 2: financial status I'm in. Because Beck, you could do the same.
- 33:41Speaker 2: You could be like, I want THEE and Jess to
- 33:42Speaker 2: come over for dinns. That'll be fun. Jess, I'll cook
- 33:45Speaker 2: the like, bring some booze. Don't worry if you then
- 33:48Speaker 2: sprung it on us. Oh, by the way, you're coming
- 33:50Speaker 2: over for dinner, could you bring the food as well?
- 33:52Speaker 2: I'd be like, rowd, I'm so excited for Beck's cooking
- 33:56Speaker 2: and everything to do with why you're thinking about that,
- 33:59Speaker 2: And I also look at it and go, should you
- 34:01Speaker 2: call anyone out for their stinginess? No, it's not your place.
- 34:05Speaker 2: We've talked about this on the podcast before. You don't
- 34:07Speaker 2: know what she's been through. You're assuming she's coming from
- 34:10Speaker 2: a very wealthy family. What if there's a lot of
- 34:13Speaker 2: financial abuse in that wealthy family where Jess, you know,
- 34:17Speaker 2: mum and dad are super wealthy, and they only give
- 34:19Speaker 2: Jess money if Jess does a certain thing or studies
- 34:23Speaker 2: something particular, or you know, is home by a certain
- 34:26Speaker 2: time every night, and money's really triggering for her because
- 34:29Speaker 2: at the end of the day, it's a way that
- 34:31Speaker 2: other people are controlling her.
- 34:33Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 34:33Speaker 2: Yeah, What if money is really really fickle and she's
- 34:36Speaker 2: being stingy because she's trying to live within her means,
- 34:39Speaker 2: because she never wants to rely on her family. These
- 34:41Speaker 2: are things that we're not thinking about when calling somebody
- 34:44Speaker 2: else out for being stingy. And if you're calling someone
- 34:46Speaker 2: out for being stingy and you don't know their whole
- 34:48Speaker 2: money story, you cannot say that there's got to be
- 34:51Speaker 2: more of a story.
- 34:52Speaker 3: I feel like you don't label someone stingy off of
- 34:54Speaker 3: the back of one or two things. So I feel
- 34:56Speaker 3: like we're missing a lot of context here that would.
- 34:59Speaker 2: Maybe calling people stingy. I just think it's so rude.
- 35:02Speaker 2: Like imagine if we called Beck stingy? Is she no?
- 35:06Speaker 2: You know what Beck is? She's super generous, she's good
- 35:08Speaker 2: at blowing all the cash, let's be honest. So is
- 35:11Speaker 2: she being stingy or did she just not have the
- 35:13Speaker 2: cash for that thing right now?
- 35:14Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 35:15Speaker 2: Totally, And it's not a stingy Beck.
- 35:17Speaker 1: No.
- 35:17Speaker 2: I wouldn't say that at all, Like out a fight
- 35:19Speaker 2: with her before recording, because she was like, oh, do
- 35:21Speaker 2: you want me to get to your coffee? And I
- 35:22Speaker 2: was like, I can get my own. She's like, why
- 35:24Speaker 2: do you always do this? Do you know what I mean? Like,
- 35:27Speaker 2: it's not the stinginess that's a problem, it's your perception
- 35:30Speaker 2: of it. And if you call somebody else stingy, you're
- 35:33Speaker 2: judging the way that they are acting with money. You
- 35:37Speaker 2: need to think more about yourself, bab.
- 35:38Speaker 3: Yeah, because the situation with that first question that you asked,
- 35:41Speaker 3: you know, is it okay to change the thing last minute?
- 35:43Speaker 3: Is an organizational thing. It's not that they're stingy. It's
- 35:47Speaker 3: that they've told you something last minute, yes, which is
- 35:49Speaker 3: a whole different thing.
- 35:50Speaker 2: Yeah, that is very true, and that I get with
- 35:52Speaker 2: thirty three. But she totally could have spent the one
- 35:55Speaker 2: hundred dollars and catered it better.
- 35:57Speaker 3: A lot of money.
- 35:58Speaker 2: Hundred dollars is a lot of money. So it's actually
- 36:00Speaker 2: not that much food at the supermarket these days.
- 36:02Speaker 3: Oh no, I said that on literally one bag of groceries.
- 36:05Speaker 3: Nearly died.
- 36:05Speaker 2: I'm so basic. Things not in my head. Me popping
- 36:09Speaker 2: to the supermarket is like a thirty dollars trip, right, totally,
- 36:12Speaker 2: Like if I haven't gotten in my head in my head,
- 36:14Speaker 2: we're not saying that's reality. And the other day I
- 36:17Speaker 2: was like looking at my receipt and I've gotten like
- 36:19Speaker 2: some stuff for dinner because somehow I'd eat all my
- 36:22Speaker 2: Marley spoons. And actually I had to go to the
- 36:23Speaker 2: shops myself, rude obviously got some little treaty treats. Myself
- 36:28Speaker 2: of course, picked up some cat and dog stuff. All fine,
- 36:31Speaker 2: what do you mean it's one hundred and twenty bucks
- 36:32Speaker 2: if there's only one bag of groceries here, sir? No, Like,
- 36:36Speaker 2: is this faulty machine? It wasn't everything's just getting so expensive?
- 36:40Speaker 2: So I don't know. I think this underlying idea that
- 36:44Speaker 2: you're going. Honestly, we're thirty three and she could have
- 36:46Speaker 2: easily spent one hundred dollars to cater that's your entitlement showing,
- 36:51Speaker 2: and I don't like it.
- 36:52Speaker 3: Yeah. What did everybody else say?
- 36:53Speaker 1: Though?
- 36:54Speaker 2: All right, so they're probably gonna be nice In the main.
- 36:57Speaker 2: We asked you a few questions. I'll get through those,
- 37:00Speaker 2: then i'll tell you what people said. First question we asked,
- 37:02Speaker 2: we said, do you think it's unreasonable for the birthday
- 37:04Speaker 2: girl to tell her friends to bring food to her party?
- 37:07Speaker 2: Sixty seven percent said yep, she should one hundred percent
- 37:10Speaker 2: supply more food, and thirty three percent said no, it's
- 37:13Speaker 2: actually really normal for people to be asked to bring food,
- 37:16Speaker 2: which I think is answering that initial question without yeah
- 37:20Speaker 2: the judgment. Question two, we said, if yes, and this
- 37:24Speaker 2: was your friend, would you call them out on it?
- 37:26Speaker 2: Thirty four percent said Yep, I would totally call them
- 37:28Speaker 2: out for being stingy rude. Sixty six percent of you though,
- 37:32Speaker 2: you're on our team. Nope, it's not my place to
- 37:34Speaker 2: say anything. Question three, we said, do you think just
- 37:38Speaker 2: because someone earns a good wage and is tight with
- 37:40Speaker 2: their money, they should be labeled as stingy. Fifty seven
- 37:44Speaker 2: percent of you said if they won't buy more than
- 37:46Speaker 2: twenty four sausages, then yes, forty three percent of you
- 37:49Speaker 2: said no, they might be saving for something. Yeah, yes,
- 37:53Speaker 2: I think is fair. And then we obviously said, guys,
- 37:55Speaker 2: what's your two cents? So here's the first comment. The
- 37:58Speaker 2: host should have asked everyone to bring a plate from
- 38:00Speaker 2: the very start. Wouldn't have been an issue if that
- 38:02Speaker 2: was the case. Someone else said, you should have been
- 38:05Speaker 2: really clear that it was bwayo food from the outset.
- 38:08Speaker 2: Someone said, in my friend's circle, we would always bring
- 38:11Speaker 2: a dish anyway. Some of us earn more money than others.
- 38:14Speaker 2: Someone said, I hate the idea that because you earn
- 38:17Speaker 2: good money, you should be paying for other people's things.
- 38:21Speaker 2: Totally agree. It's totally okay to ask people to be
- 38:24Speaker 2: bringing food, but kind of rude to be showing up
- 38:27Speaker 2: empty handed anyway, tbh. Jessica would never I kind of
- 38:32Speaker 2: agree with that. Jessica made the other day the best gingerbread.
- 38:36Speaker 2: Men like them? Yeah, it's like I liked the half
- 38:38Speaker 2: of one I got because Jess left me with some
- 38:41Speaker 2: of them. Obviously, my husband got to the before me,
- 38:44Speaker 2: and then I saw him walking down the hallway and
- 38:46Speaker 2: I'm like, what's that. He was like, it's a gingerbread
- 38:48Speaker 2: and I was like, that one was my one. He
- 38:51Speaker 2: was like, but you didn't need it yet, Like apparently
- 38:53Speaker 2: if it's just left out, it's fair game.
- 38:56Speaker 3: Everyone for themselves.
- 38:57Speaker 2: It was a full fight. So Jess got the top
- 39:00Speaker 2: with a Christmas tree. It I like, fool took it
- 39:03Speaker 2: off him and I was like, this is not yours.
- 39:04Speaker 2: I'll thank you, thank you, thank you. Someone said always
- 39:08Speaker 2: play broke can't buy wine or share, but can seem
- 39:11Speaker 2: to travel to Hawaii and Canada twice a year. I
- 39:14Speaker 2: think that they're talking about one of their friends, which okay,
- 39:19Speaker 2: So you're saying that your friend values travel over buying
- 39:23Speaker 2: wine and wants to split the cost of an uber
- 39:27Speaker 2: because you both incurred that cost they're allowed. Yeah, isn't
- 39:31Speaker 2: that wild? Anyway? Someone said, you guys could have gone
- 39:34Speaker 2: somewhere and not hosted twenty people. There were so many
- 39:36Speaker 2: other options. It's tree, you could have gone out. That's
- 39:39Speaker 2: more expensive, though.
- 39:40Speaker 4: It sometimes ends up being more expensive, and I.
- 39:42Speaker 2: Love a little at home little shindigla. Yeah. Someone said,
- 39:48Speaker 2: if you can't afford it, don't suggest it in the
- 39:50Speaker 2: first place. I think it should just be the expectation
- 39:53Speaker 2: that's set from the outset.
- 39:55Speaker 3: Yeah. I think it's if you don't want to pay
- 39:57Speaker 3: more than a certain amount. She just should have sent
- 39:59Speaker 3: the message that she sent when she first organized. Yeah, like, hey, guys,
- 40:02Speaker 3: I'm gonna have this many sausages and some nibbles and stuff.
- 40:05Speaker 3: If you want anything else, feel free.
- 40:07Speaker 2: To be Yoh. Someone said, a good wage doesn't mean
- 40:10Speaker 2: that they're not in debt. Debt is not visible. They
- 40:12Speaker 2: could be paying for something large, like medical bills or
- 40:15Speaker 2: some debt they got into when they were younger. Totally.
- 40:17Speaker 2: Someone else said, you don't actually know that you're making
- 40:20Speaker 2: a grand assumption. What if she had a pay cut
- 40:22Speaker 2: or there are some personal circumstances you weren't provy too. Yeah,
- 40:26Speaker 2: I think she would work out well on the she's
- 40:28Speaker 2: on the money team.
- 40:29Speaker 4: Yeah. I just want to quickly mention also, I forgot
- 40:31Speaker 4: about this, but nibbles. I literally spent one hundred pinbble.
- 40:35Speaker 4: You want a cheese platter, so nibbles can be I'll
- 40:37Speaker 4: put of one hundred.
- 40:38Speaker 3: Dollars depending on nibbles, could be like little kishas or
- 40:42Speaker 3: party pies or like something that if you have that
- 40:44Speaker 3: alongside your larger meal like box it out.
- 40:47Speaker 4: Yes, totally, I agree.
- 40:49Speaker 2: I've been trying to do like cheaper things. So the
- 40:53Speaker 2: other night when the girls came over, I didn't do
- 40:56Speaker 2: a big cheese platter because they are so expensive to
- 40:58Speaker 2: pull together. But I did do like, and I'm famous
- 41:01Speaker 2: for this, It's on Instagram if you want it, but
- 41:05Speaker 2: a baked bree because like it's quite hefty, but like,
- 41:08Speaker 2: at the same time, it's not just a bree and
- 41:10Speaker 2: six million crackers around it and then having to like
- 41:12Speaker 2: bulk it out. I baked one bree with like a
- 41:15Speaker 2: packet of Filo pastry around it, so it became like
- 41:19Speaker 2: the centerpiece of what we're having. And then we had
- 41:21Speaker 2: you know, some fresh baghette and like some dip and
- 41:23Speaker 2: some tomato stuff and it was really nice still, but honestly,
- 41:27Speaker 2: it was so much cheaper than going and like putting
- 41:30Speaker 2: together a cheese platter, because in my head, if I'm
- 41:32Speaker 2: putting together a cheese platter, well I'm going to need
- 41:34Speaker 2: a hard cheese. I'm going to a soft cheese like grape.
- 41:39Speaker 2: But you know what I mean, it like adds up
- 41:41Speaker 2: and all the like little things are expensive on that
- 41:43Speaker 2: platter totally, whereas like a beautiful little Bree and it
- 41:47Speaker 2: doesn't even have to be expensive because you gonna bake
- 41:48Speaker 2: it anyway. And then the feel it it worked out
- 41:51Speaker 2: so well was in our newsletter a couple of weeks ago.
- 41:56Speaker 2: We are not baking it. I don't know what salary
- 41:58Speaker 2: you've got to be able to bake your das and
- 42:01Speaker 2: that's not where Jess and I live. We can't, all right,
- 42:04Speaker 2: Two more one said and I liked this one because
- 42:07Speaker 2: they did make me laugh. Sounds like that person who
- 42:10Speaker 2: wrote into you guys is a judge e mc judge, judge.
- 42:13Speaker 2: I don't want a friend like that. And then they
- 42:15Speaker 2: did like four red flag emojis, and then someone else said, honestly,
- 42:20Speaker 2: it's just the last minuteness of it all. It's so
- 42:22Speaker 2: fine to ask if food can be provided, planning needs
- 42:26Speaker 2: to be requested ahead, so and then they said last
- 42:30Speaker 2: minute is quite rude. So I just agree with that.
- 42:33Speaker 2: I just think give people time. Yeah, I want to
- 42:36Speaker 2: make a bag to Bree and bring it, do I
- 42:38Speaker 2: can't do that in five minutes because I'm really like
- 42:42Speaker 2: slow cook.
- 42:45Speaker 4: But no, that's so true. I think general, I think
- 42:47Speaker 4: we're all on.
- 42:48Speaker 2: The same page. Yes, don't be judge. Everyone has a
- 42:51Speaker 2: different financial circumstance. And if you think someone is stingy,
- 42:55Speaker 2: have you actually thought about what their money story could
- 42:57Speaker 2: be to lead them to be like that? With myne me? Also,
- 43:01Speaker 2: what do you I have this genuine belief? Sorry, going
- 43:04Speaker 2: back on a thing again, you cannot tell someone something
- 43:08Speaker 2: about themselves that they cannot change in ten seconds. So
- 43:11Speaker 2: like Becca, I could be like, oh, there's something in
- 43:13Speaker 2: your teeth, or hey, can I grab something out of
- 43:15Speaker 2: your hair? Or oh, my gosh, did you realize your
- 43:16Speaker 2: jump us on backwards? Like things that you can immediately
- 43:19Speaker 2: change about yourself so you can go, oh, thanks, b
- 43:22Speaker 2: And obviously you're not going to say it in front
- 43:24Speaker 2: of a group of people. You'll be like, oh, Beck,
- 43:25Speaker 2: you jumpies on backwards and you go, oh my god,
- 43:27Speaker 2: of course it is. If you can't fix it in
- 43:30Speaker 2: ten seconds, you should not be pointing that out to
- 43:33Speaker 2: somebody else. You're going, oh, Jess, you're really stingy. Wait
- 43:36Speaker 2: what that's so rude? One out of ten one out
- 43:40Speaker 2: of ten, So let's leave it there for this week.
- 43:41Speaker 4: What do you reckon singing?
- 43:42Speaker 6: Sister?
- 43:43Speaker 2: Have a good weekend, my loves, and we will see
- 43:44Speaker 2: you bright and early for another money diary on Monday.
- 43:47Speaker 2: Bye guys, byee.
