- 0:00Oh, God. Oh, my God.
- 0:12All right. Well, fuck. Yeah.
- 0:13Thanks for joining us, Chris.
- 0:15Yeah. Thanks for asking me to.
- 0:17Yeah, I've been enjoying our conversation on Twitter about
- 0:23Schrader and all sorts of other fun things.
- 0:25Yeah. All Schrader.
- 0:26Paul Schrader is great. I don't I do not understand
- 0:30the straighter hate dying of the light.
- 0:34Some of his OK, that doesn't count because that was taken from him.
- 0:38That's not the movie he was intending to make. He boycotted it.
- 0:42But even even if he made it, even if that was the movie
- 0:45wanted to make and it was bad, he still did cat people,
- 0:48which is enough to no matter what happens after that.
- 0:53He's good. And he also wrote, I believe, Obsession.
- 0:55I think that was the I got a movie he wrote.
- 0:59I got to agree with you.
- 1:00Cat people fucking rules.
- 1:01I watched that the other day.
- 1:02I like never have time to watch an extra movie and I crammed this one
- 1:05in on your recommendation.
- 1:08Very fun.
- 1:09It didn't convert me on Schrader, but man, what a fucking blast.
- 1:13That movie is. You're fired.
- 1:16What is cat people at people?
- 1:19Yeah. So it's a remake of,
- 1:21I believe, a 1942 Valued in horror movie.
- 1:26So this was made mid 80s.
- 1:28Malcolm Macdowell's in it. John heard a nettle tool.
- 1:32And basically.
- 1:35There's these people and they turn into cats
- 1:39and when they turn into cats, they turn into, I believe, black leopards
- 1:44and they kill.
- 1:45And the only way to stop the transformation is to have sex with their sibling.
- 1:48OK, I'm sold. Let's go watch this movie right now.
- 1:52It's so good.
- 1:53It's so like 80s goofy, but fantastic.
- 1:57I don't know. I loved it.
- 1:59I'm interested in the science behind sibling sex.
- 2:03Are they twins?
- 2:04You had me at sibling sex.
- 2:08Is that your favorite type of adult documentary?
- 2:12I mean, there were multiple times where I was just like,
- 2:14this is so fucking dumb, but I had a good time.
- 2:17So we can have so fucking dumb this week.
- 2:21Yeah, actually, go ahead and bring us in, Sean.
- 2:23Welcome back to Cage Match, colon, a roundabout way of meeting Nicolas Cage.
- 2:27I'm your host, Sean, here with my cohost Nick and our producer.
- 2:31Peter, hello.
- 2:32We have our special guest, Chris Coffel here today.
- 2:36Why don't you tell the people what it is you do?
- 2:38Also, do we get your name right?
- 2:40Coffel is coffee.
- 2:41Technically, Coffel sounds nicer, I think.
- 2:43So, yeah, I guess I guess I occasionally write mostly at film school rejects
- 2:49for probably the last eight years or so.
- 2:53For the last few years, mostly just in October,
- 2:56horrors my favorite genre.
- 2:58So every year at film school rejects, we do a big
- 3:0031 days of horror lists or every day in October.
- 3:04We have a new list of 10 horror movies.
- 3:06We've been doing it for a long time now.
- 3:08So it started out, you know, like best vampire movie, best werewolf movie.
- 3:12But now it's very like specific.
- 3:15You know, it's a best movie.
- 3:18Yeah. Yeah. Well, last year was erotic.
- 3:20It was one of the categories and cat people did make the list.
- 3:25Fantastic.
- 3:27Yeah. And then I previously had a Nick Cage column.
- 3:29I wrote at film school rejects for two years, I think,
- 3:35and a couple other random columns.
- 3:36And then occasionally I pop up at other places.
- 3:39It's been a while, but if you dig deep,
- 3:42I've done a bunch of stuff, a bloody disgusting as well
- 3:45and have recently started doing some stuff at
- 3:48Amicus Horror to the new site.
- 3:50But mostly I play Rocket League.
- 3:52So that's where you can find me.
- 3:54Nice. Nick and I are on that hell.
- 3:56Hell Divers to train right now.
- 3:59Sorry, I didn't mean to make noise with that.
- 4:01Oh, no, it's fine. Now it was buzzing for a second.
- 4:04Yeah. Nick's got big money on the line with the basketball game
- 4:07going on right now. So
- 4:10I hope you put your money on.
- 4:12I'm I'm with Purdue.
- 4:14So if we start and say I'm not with Purdue, I'm Yukon.
- 4:17Yeah. What the fuck? Yeah.
- 4:19No, I'm switching over. Last minute.
- 4:20No, I'm not.
- 4:22I changed the bracket. It's fine.
- 4:24Yeah. What if you could just primal wins?
- 4:25God damn it. Yeah.
- 4:27Oh, OK. Yeah. I do want to talk about primal.
- 4:31Well, let me finish my segue from five minutes ago.
- 4:33Yeah, speaking of a speaking of dumb, speaking of dumb movies.
- 4:37This week, we have Conair and Ghost Rider to Spirit of Vengeance.
- 4:41Yeah, those aren't dumb movies.
- 4:43No, those are serious movies.
- 4:45We're in the action category.
- 4:47These are movies to base your entire personality on.
- 4:50You're not wrong. Yeah.
- 4:52We will get into why.
- 4:54Yeah. So, Chris, I mean, you you're obviously kind of like
- 4:57a an Internet go to person in terms of cage stuff.
- 5:01So like what got you started?
- 5:02How why do you love Nick Cage so much?
- 5:06So I grew up in the 90s.
- 5:07So Cage was always kind of a, you know, unknown quantity, a big deal.
- 5:12Raising Arizona is probably the first movie I knew him from.
- 5:15But when I became like I really got into cage,
- 5:21this is weird because I was think I was probably 11.
- 5:24And we went and seen face offs.
- 5:27My family would go to the drive in pretty regularly.
- 5:29And I wanted to go see Batman and Robin.
- 5:33My parents wanted to see face off.
- 5:34They opened up on the same day.
- 5:36A face off went out, which I was adamant I did not want to see.
- 5:40But then I loved it.
- 5:41And therefore, I was like, your parents are not monsters.
- 5:46I don't know.
- 5:47Batman and Robin is also a sick movie.
- 5:49I have these awful.
- 5:51Oh, just like it's the only movie I've never watched to completion.
- 5:55It's not terrible.
- 5:56That's Batman edging.
- 5:58Yeah, it's a great movie.
- 6:00You just sit down, start drinking.
- 6:03The movie is going to go through.
- 6:04You're going to have a great time.
- 6:06I missed my 20 year window to enjoy that movie then.
- 6:09You can figure it out.
- 6:10Is that the Mr. Freeze one? Yeah.
- 6:12Oh, boy. All right. Good.
- 6:14Everybody.
- 6:16I still meet you.
- 6:18See, you even remember quotes from it.
- 6:21I don't even know that's a quote from it.
- 6:23It probably is.
- 6:24Yes, it is.
- 6:26It is. I always turn that movie off at the same place.
- 6:29And that's when the Bat Amics card comes out.
- 6:32Oh,
- 6:35what a great film.
- 6:37We're now a Batman and Robin podcast.
- 6:40Yeah, we're pivoting. Chris, this is your time.
- 6:43Welcome to the batting cage.
- 6:45Oh, no.
- 6:48Sorry, it's nipples on the bat suit just because I still own that URL.
- 6:51That's Batman forever.
- 6:54It carries over.
- 6:57They're not sure.
- 6:59That's true. They are both to market that.
- 7:00I'm actually pretty good.
- 7:01That's kind of a bit of a Renaissance.
- 7:04I do like that film a lot like Val Kilmer underrated Batman.
- 7:07I agree. Yeah.
- 7:10Christian Bale. Worst Batman.
- 7:11I do not like Christian Bale's Batman at all.
- 7:15He was great in Captain Crowley's mandolin.
- 7:18He was great in Captain Crowley's mandolin.
- 7:19And I think that's the best Batman.
- 7:22I think that's the best Batman.
- 7:24I think that's the best Batman.
- 7:26I think that's the best Batman.
- 7:28Mondraus is Batman.
- 7:30Oh, fuck, yeah.
- 7:32You just get shot in the ass.
- 7:34All right.
- 7:35What are we talking about?
- 7:36This is a this is a Nicolas Cage podcast where we've taken 64
- 7:39Nicolas Cage movies and bracketed them till Nick and I decide what
- 7:43ultimately is the best Nick Cage movie as decided by two idiots that are us.
- 7:47You you kind of were a progenitor of the March Madness Nick Cage thing.
- 7:52So I want to talk about that just a little bit.
- 7:54What was your idea behind that?
- 7:56How did you pick your 16?
- 7:57And why are you smarter than us for only doing 16?
- 8:02So I did 16 once, so it would just be shorter, obviously.
- 8:08I recall I have to go back and look.
- 8:09I think I picked the 16 that were the highest rated on IMDb,
- 8:14which is a dumb way to choose things.
- 8:15Anything that aggregates scores anywhere is mostly stupid.
- 8:20But that's how I chose the 16.
- 8:21So it wouldn't be just completely me picking my favorite 16.
- 8:25There would be something interesting behind it.
- 8:26And I I think Raising Arizona won my bracket, if I remember.
- 8:31But I got to pull it up and see. Yeah.
- 8:33I was surprised to see if it was just the top 16 in your list.
- 8:39I was surprised to see that Bad Lieutenant was one of his 16 best films
- 8:44circa 2018.
- 8:46And I know that you like that movie.
- 8:49And I'm not saying that's wrong.
- 8:53But why?
- 8:54I still haven't found anybody to explain why that movie is likeable.
- 9:00I'm not saying it's wrong.
- 9:01I'm just saying you're not invited to my birthday party.
- 9:03If it's Bad Lieutenant themed, I don't need to be there.
- 9:06But it's got iguanas.
- 9:08Yeah.
- 9:08But a sober guy throwing a drug addled birthday party sounds terrible.
- 9:12I mean, it's it's you have
- 9:15Verner Herzog and Nicolas Cage, and that's just it's just
- 9:20the right amount of madness for it to work.
- 9:24I guess I'm not surprised that you're not a fan
- 9:28because I was I was shocked that you guys were so low on bringing out the dead.
- 9:33I don't know how.
- 9:34No, no, we love that movie.
- 9:35Yeah, the movie is really, really good.
- 9:37But the reasoning behind why we we kicked it is.
- 9:41Valid. Yeah, valid and specific about mostly Schrader, but.
- 9:46Which we've established already is incorrect.
- 9:48And also Joe, Joe's a fucking great.
- 9:50Joe's a great movie.
- 9:52We're going to fight this whole time.
- 9:53Yeah, people were never going to talk about Conair or Ghost Rider.
- 9:57No, it's happened before.
- 9:59Primal. I love Primal.
- 10:01Have you seen Primal?
- 10:02I have seen Primal.
- 10:04I love that line.
- 10:05They talked about what does he shouts the line he shouts about like
- 10:08meeting his cat, Jack.
- 10:11Primal's fun.
- 10:12See, it's fun.
- 10:14I said I told you I'd rewatch it.
- 10:16Yeah, I know.
- 10:17I just have to keep telling you how great it is until you do.
- 10:21Great. It's a terrific film.
- 10:24It's easily top five.
- 10:25Oh, you are wrong there.
- 10:27I didn't say of what fair.
- 10:30But what do you guys want to start with?
- 10:31Ghost Rider, Spirit of Vengeance.
- 10:33I could Vengeance.
- 10:35So the not so direct sequel to the original Ghost Rider
- 10:40where Johnny Blaze has to save Danny, the son of the devil.
- 10:45Would you say that it's the spiritual sequel?
- 10:48Ah, I'll leave now.
- 10:52Yeah, that's your best joke
- 10:54of this whole podcast
- 10:58from becoming the new incarnation of the devil
- 11:01all the while avoiding Blackout, who is the villain.
- 11:06Kind of a shitty villain.
- 11:07Better than the boy band from the first movie.
- 11:13The elemental boy band. Yeah.
- 11:14So are the special effects, the action and general just demeanor of the film.
- 11:20I like this movie a lot.
- 11:22This movie is a romp.
- 11:23Yeah, it's certainly a more enjoyable version of the film
- 11:28than the original Ghost Rider.
- 11:31I was glad to see that jelly beans got replaced with pills.
- 11:35Always nice to do that.
- 11:36And not even like pills you just play around with,
- 11:39but like some pretty good muscle relaxers and painkillers.
- 11:43Oh, I'm sure, you know, probably sore from having all this flesh burned off nightly.
- 11:48He drank. He had a drink of that wine.
- 11:50Yeah, would be nice on a salad.
- 11:52But that's old, old wine for you.
- 11:55We have Idris Elba giving us a very wide
- 12:00French accent. Mm hmm.
- 12:02Mm hmm. It goes places rarely goes to the same place twice.
- 12:06Well, yeah, that sounds like him in Conair, though.
- 12:09Nicholas Cage. Yeah. Yeah.
- 12:10I was going to talk about that.
- 12:12That dances around to.
- 12:13Yeah, the Idris Elba one.
- 12:15It definitely doesn't start French like until they mention that he's French.
- 12:19I never hear a French accent until like it's halfway to the movie
- 12:22because initially he's just Idris Elba.
- 12:25He's got like a little bit of generic European.
- 12:27It's like this could be any kind of region in like southern Europe.
- 12:33Yeah, I think the only thing that makes him French is he's kind of like, oh,
- 12:37that's it.
- 12:38I would have killed for a whole whole whole.
- 12:40Oh, yeah. Oh, oh, oh, oh.
- 12:44Is this one in a whole whole?
- 12:46It is so old.
- 12:49What was up with his contact lenses?
- 12:50I don't know. I was going to ask why yellow eyes.
- 12:53Well, he drinks a lot.
- 12:54I think it's cat people.
- 12:55It must be cat people reasons.
- 12:57It could be cat people.
- 12:59He's a werecat.
- 13:00Yeah, I mean, I have to go have sex with his brother.
- 13:04So, Chris, what was your interaction with this movie?
- 13:07I feel like you've probably seen every cage movie, but.
- 13:10Yeah, yeah.
- 13:11I'm a big fan of Ghost Rider, Spirit of Vengeance.
- 13:13It's it's such a step up from the first movie in every way.
- 13:17And I like that.
- 13:18Yes, it's a sequel, but it assumes you haven't seen Ghost Rider
- 13:22with the opening where he completely explains who Ghost Rider is
- 13:25and how he became Ghost Rider.
- 13:28So it kind of works as a reboot.
- 13:30I'm also a fan of Neville Dean and Taylor,
- 13:33the directing combo that did the movie.
- 13:35So once they were working with cage and being a fan of the crank movies,
- 13:39I was all for this.
- 13:41And initially, it was supposed to be part of the Marvel Nights series,
- 13:45which were supposed to be darker, more adult oriented comic book movies.
- 13:49They did Punisher Warzone.
- 13:51And I thought this was going to be.
- 13:52Yeah, Punisher Warzone is fantastic.
- 13:54And so this was supposed to be similar to that.
- 13:57It was supposed to be R.
- 13:58It was supposed to have plenty of gore and Sony kind of got cold feet.
- 14:02They changed a lot of the script and they cut the budget in half,
- 14:05which I think kind of shows, which is weird because the CGI
- 14:08special effects are better than the first movie, but they're still.
- 14:11They're still not great.
- 14:12But there's some great set pieces and it's very magnetic,
- 14:16has lots of manic energy.
- 14:19And the two the two car chase scenes, it opens with the car chase
- 14:21and ends with the car chase.
- 14:23And they're both real cars, practical effects,
- 14:27for the most part, with the car stuff.
- 14:29Fantastic. I've been a fan, even though I think the movie doesn't
- 14:33never got to be what it should have been.
- 14:35But it's still great.
- 14:36I think it is a lot of great stuff, and I will always appreciate
- 14:39taking a character like that and like for your final set piece, like
- 14:43now we're going to set it during the day so you can see all the action.
- 14:46None of that fucking Pacific Rim bullshit where it's like,
- 14:49here's the big monster fight at night underwater.
- 14:51You can't see shit.
- 14:52Oh, yeah. Yeah. I love day action scenes.
- 14:55Like you don't have enough of them.
- 14:56And this this this movie, I mean, almost all this movie takes place
- 14:59during the day.
- 15:00The one scene where he gets shot with like that rocket launcher
- 15:04thing that's at night.
- 15:05But for the most part, it's it's all day.
- 15:08And I think they I think Neville Dean Taylor did a good job
- 15:11kind of covering up where they didn't have the budget.
- 15:14They do all these interesting cutaways where they have these scenes
- 15:17where it cuts to work.
- 15:18Everything else is black.
- 15:19And you just see the action taking place on a black background.
- 15:22It's like somebody somebody else
- 15:24for play discussing just wrote about Ghost Rider today and they compared
- 15:28it's like Mortal Kombat, fatality cut scenes.
- 15:31And that's what it feels like.
- 15:32OK, I can say that.
- 15:34Yeah. Yeah.
- 15:35I could tell that they had cut some of the budget down
- 15:38in like the lack of transformations.
- 15:42It was I'm going to kneel down.
- 15:44I'm the ghost rider.
- 15:45I'm going to kneel down.
- 15:46I'm Nicolas Cage.
- 15:48You didn't have a much in the way of like,
- 15:52you know, American werewolf like changing or anything like that.
- 15:55He snorts fire one time out of his nostrils, but he does.
- 15:59He does that one where he's like turning the cage up to 11 on the motorcycle
- 16:02and like there's kind of superimposing like bits of a skull
- 16:05and stretching it over his face.
- 16:06It doesn't have the wow factor of the transformation in the original film.
- 16:10Yeah, those aren't like transformations, though.
- 16:13That's not like, I don't know, face melting, head burning.
- 16:17I know that's I'm just saying that's the closest we get.
- 16:19Yeah.
- 16:20One of the effects that I thought was really fucking nice, though, was
- 16:23because it was so shot in the daytime, you see the flame
- 16:26and like that black smoke that's coming off of it.
- 16:29You just never got in Ghost Rider one because it's just sort of this
- 16:32like magic spirit flame.
- 16:34That's like, no, it's like a gross, gnarly ass flame.
- 16:36He looks like he smells bad.
- 16:37Yeah, for real.
- 16:39Well, he does.
- 16:39He has a cycle where he has all the face stuff.
- 16:43That's more like, yes, there's obviously some special effects there,
- 16:45but that's a lot of like cage making weird faces
- 16:49and then just like slightly altering it.
- 16:51Kind of like he feels like he's channeling that.
- 16:54He talks about being a fan of like German expressionism and like surrealism.
- 16:58And that's what that scene feels like to me.
- 17:01And I might be misquoting or misremembering,
- 17:04but I spoke to Brian Taylor about this movie years ago
- 17:07and because I had made, which I shared with you, Peter, a little video.
- 17:11Right. Like I edited that scene in black and white
- 17:13and made it put like old silent film music over it.
- 17:17I'm pretty sure.
- 17:18And everything. Yeah.
- 17:20They kicked around the idea of doing parts of the movie in black and white,
- 17:24black and white and removing CGI altogether.
- 17:27So still having him like in the costume he would wear for the CGI.
- 17:32But then it just be like cage facial expressions.
- 17:34But Sony was not into that idea.
- 17:38They're cowards, man.
- 17:39They fuck. They are cowards.
- 17:41Well, I mean, did this this came out after Warzone Punisher Wars on,
- 17:45I'm assuming that's why I got scared because I know Punisher Wars
- 17:48on did not do well, like it did not get a wide release.
- 17:51I wanted to see in theaters and I didn't really get a chance to when it came out.
- 17:54I think it's like three years after Wars.
- 17:56OK, because, yeah, those are the two movies that came out under that title.
- 18:00Right. Under that banner.
- 18:03It's kind of crazy that they only had the two,
- 18:04but I guess they were going through a lot of change at that point.
- 18:07Yes. So it's always been kind of.
- 18:09Yeah.
- 18:10If he on not as bad as Fox.
- 18:13It didn't help that like the Dark Knight took off and then,
- 18:17you know, the Avengers was right around the corner.
- 18:20So comic book films became more serious, I guess,
- 18:24not fun, silly like they were in the the 90s.
- 18:27Then I'm those kind of getting back to that maybe a little bit.
- 18:30That's like closer. That's more in line, I think, with the two Venom movies
- 18:33are more in line with this ghostwriter.
- 18:36Yeah. Yeah, they definitely feel like they're
- 18:39they definitely feel more
- 18:42in line with the serious or the humorous take on the character.
- 18:48Well, I remember I was a big fan of ghostwriter comics at this time,
- 18:52and I always loved the Johnny Blaze is a fucking moron like character.
- 18:57Like he was a carny. He grew up in a carnival.
- 19:00He knows that he knows how to fix and ride motorcycles, doesn't know anything else.
- 19:04So he's just a really dumb superhero who's just way too powerful.
- 19:07And most of the trouble he gets in is his own fucking fault
- 19:10for just sticking his head where sticking his nose where it shouldn't be.
- 19:13So I always liked I was like a big dumb hero.
- 19:18Good him.
- 19:19Yeah, exactly.
- 19:20And like only him, though,
- 19:23a pure like Ghost Rider, you don't really need a big
- 19:28buff like superhero body.
- 19:30You just need a guy who you can put a skull on, who can like
- 19:34move at a moderate pace.
- 19:36You need to look good in a leather jacket.
- 19:39They should get in the leather jacket.
- 19:40That's it.
- 19:40And also just show up to set with your face painted like a voodoo skull
- 19:43and not telling anyone you're going to do it.
- 19:46I love that.
- 19:47Thank you, man, so much.
- 19:49What a fucking weirdo. I love him.
- 19:50He's fantastic.
- 19:52OK, one of the one of the things that I hate about this movie
- 19:55and it's probably the only thing I hate about this movie.
- 19:57The writing is really fucking dumb.
- 19:59Like what writing exists is really stupid.
- 20:03It's pretty simple.
- 20:06It's meant to get us to the set pieces.
- 20:09Yeah, and it tries to make every line like a kind of clever one
- 20:13liner action hero note.
- 20:16And it kind of leans into like every everything that said needs to be funny.
- 20:21I mean, sometimes it kind of is.
- 20:23Did like the singular callback from what I felt
- 20:28in this movie to the original was when
- 20:31Ghost Rider knocks that guy down and like they run over him
- 20:35and he just kind of turns the camera and says, Roadkill.
- 20:40So good. I did like that.
- 20:42Very comic book.
- 20:43Yeah. Oh, is that the only line that Ghost Rider says that wasn't him
- 20:45like repeating?
- 20:46He also says, Hungry.
- 20:49Oh, that's right. Yep.
- 20:50Need to say hungry.
- 20:52I will say the penitent stare in this one doesn't carry the same weight
- 20:55as the first movie. It does not.
- 20:56And that needed a little something connecting their like little faces
- 21:00or mouths or would not have turned on Rebel Wilson.
- 21:03Something on the eyes.
- 21:04Yeah.
- 21:07My favorite line of dumb dialogue in this movie is
- 21:10when the devil at work, he
- 21:14talks to the kid, Danny, on the phone.
- 21:17And the kid then like screams and like passes out.
- 21:19And he basically tells Blackout,
- 21:23he says, Think of him as sort of a computer.
- 21:25You know, computers, right?
- 21:27When this movie is 2011, of course, he knows what the computer is.
- 21:31This isn't just been a movie in the mid 80s and find that line.
- 21:35I get it. But so weird.
- 21:37Not a place.
- 21:39I had a place.
- 21:39You know, it's just strange.
- 21:42My biggest issue with this film is
- 21:45Chekhov's flaming pee,
- 21:48because we see the idea of him using his pee as a flamethrower.
- 21:52We never see him use it on anybody.
- 21:54That would have been a great weapon.
- 21:55That would have been a great weapon.
- 21:57He was very poorly hydrated.
- 22:01I didn't see him drink water once during this.
- 22:03Oh, no, he has the pitcher of water.
- 22:05Yeah. Oh, that's a whole picture.
- 22:06That down. Yeah. So
- 22:10that scene with Danny in the diner where he just touches him for no reason.
- 22:13It's like, I thought I saw a bee on your head.
- 22:15I thought it was going to sting your face.
- 22:18Danny gets really attached to him really quick for reasons I don't understand.
- 22:23I mean, you saw the flamethrower.
- 22:24Daddy. That's true.
- 22:26But he doesn't he doesn't see it, right?
- 22:27It's just in his head.
- 22:28Just doesn't cut it all in his brain.
- 22:30He imagines it, I guess.
- 22:32He's got a good imagination.
- 22:33He's a kid who has no dad.
- 22:34Yeah. Just think about stuff.
- 22:36Yeah. And like you said,
- 22:38Johnny's cooler than most of the guys that his mom hangs out with.
- 22:42So that that's legitimately fair.
- 22:46Ghost Rider would be cool.
- 22:49Cooler stepdad.
- 22:50This comes after he tried to kill them, too.
- 22:52So that's true.
- 22:53I do like the moms
- 22:56when she's rescuing Danny and that guy comes in and she throws the knife
- 22:59at the guy and the guy catches like, what are you going to do?
- 23:02And then she pulls the gun on him.
- 23:03Yeah. Oh, no, I know.
- 23:05They allude to her connection with like an arms dealer or whatever
- 23:09early in the movie.
- 23:11But my my gripe or my concern with this movie is when she
- 23:16just somehow becomes like a competent sniper.
- 23:21Like why? She's good.
- 23:22Yeah. I mean, she did have to do it.
- 23:24She missed. That's true.
- 23:26She's a good one. Block.
- 23:28I miss the the Ghost Rider point, though.
- 23:31Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.
- 23:33From the first one.
- 23:35Yeah, the weird bony boy.
- 23:36I love a bony boy.
- 23:39I will say probably in terms of a theatrical released film,
- 23:43the best Chris Lambert performance ever.
- 23:46It almost it felt really wasted having Christopher Lambert in that role.
- 23:51Yeah. Which is fine.
- 23:53He was so he he performed it so well.
- 23:56Just not what I usually expect from Chris Lambert.
- 23:58Yeah. And I think it was.
- 24:00In the street.
- 24:01Yeah. If you're going to waste an actor, you might as well waste an actor
- 24:04that nobody thinks of ever.
- 24:07I do like how they're like, oh, he was a Highlander.
- 24:10Let's give him a sword.
- 24:11But he's also blind.
- 24:12So let's make sure we give him a sword where no one is around.
- 24:17I did try and check to see how the makeup held up scene to scene,
- 24:20because I remember when he first watched this, I read a thing
- 24:23where he didn't want to go through makeup every day.
- 24:25So he didn't like wash off the tattoos.
- 24:29Did you notice any difference?
- 24:30No. Yeah.
- 24:31I mean, also with a movie that had its budget cut, like you probably just were
- 24:34like, no, dude, don't take that.
- 24:36Yeah. I mean, also his role is so short.
- 24:39They probably just filmed it today.
- 24:40Yeah. Or two days since he got to go to the hotel with it once at least.
- 24:45Oh, allegedly.
- 24:47I, you know, I really enjoy this movie.
- 24:50It's dumb. It's fun.
- 24:51It's a good length.
- 24:54Yeah. It doesn't try to be anything that it's not.
- 24:57It's which I like in a dumb movie.
- 25:00I don't like.
- 25:01Well, so like last week, we talked to her last episode.
- 25:03We talked about mom and dad.
- 25:04And that was an hour and 20 movie that feels like an hour 45.
- 25:09And this is an hour 30 movie that feels pretty crisp.
- 25:13Yeah. There's not a lot of fat on this movie.
- 25:15Yeah. I mean, there's not a lot of words.
- 25:18Yeah.
- 25:18I'm saying it starts with a chase and it basically it just is a chase
- 25:22the entire time for the most part.
- 25:24They take it. They take that diner break.
- 25:26And that's basically it.
- 25:28All right. That's not true, because halfway through,
- 25:30it does have a brief moment where it kind of turns into this like
- 25:33buddy road comedy for a little bit when they're riding down the car
- 25:36and he just, I'll be catches up with them on his motorcycle
- 25:39and they're all just having a good laugh.
- 25:41That's kind of out of nowhere.
- 25:43But it's fun.
- 25:45But the movie flies by.
- 25:47So here's the real question, Chris.
- 25:50What's your hell vehicle?
- 25:52It's a truck camel motorcycle.
- 25:55Larger friend that puts you in a bjorn.
- 25:58That's mine. That's a good choice.
- 26:01Mine's mine's Nick.
- 26:04Oh, we're in a baby bjorn and I'm just like a rock in the front.
- 26:06So it's just a hell, Nick. Yeah.
- 26:09I want the Inceptor from Mad Max.
- 26:13So that would work in hell, I think.
- 26:16That Max is basically how the.
- 26:18Oh, the car gets destroyed in every film, so I don't know how reliable it is.
- 26:22But it comes back every time.
- 26:24So probably more of it's held out.
- 26:26It just comes back cooler.
- 26:27It's fair. Yeah. From hell.
- 26:29Chris, you're from Portland, right?
- 26:32I'm from Phoenix, but I mean, I live in Portland now.
- 26:35OK, I was going to say, I feel like you should have picked one of those weird
- 26:37tall bikes or a unicycle.
- 26:40That's that would be sick. Yeah.
- 26:42They there are already like lots of people are doing that.
- 26:45Like lots of people are doing flame spinning and shit there.
- 26:48So why not just turn to hell unicycle?
- 26:51Nick, what's your pick?
- 26:53Oh, who?
- 26:58Probably one of those like stupid hoverboard things like, you know,
- 27:03it's got two wheels and like you stand on it.
- 27:06But like every time I get on one, I can't like get my balance.
- 27:10So I look like a frickin spinning dumbass
- 27:12until I invariably fall off.
- 27:15But I think the power of hell would keep me on it
- 27:18and I would really cruise on it.
- 27:21So hoverboard.
- 27:23Ninety three Geo prism.
- 27:25Don't ask me, don't ask me follow ups. OK.
- 27:29It already is a healthy.
- 27:30I kind of want to know what the body color is.
- 27:35It's green.
- 27:37That is exactly the color of my old roommate's Geo prism.
- 27:41I have in my life owned three Geo prisms.
- 27:44Oh, OK.
- 27:45No, none of them have turned to hell vehicles.
- 27:48Well, I mean, I could have died in all of them.
- 27:51Fair. Now, the prism, we're a Geo podcast now.
- 27:56Is that a three cylinder like the Metro?
- 28:01Or does it have all four like the storm?
- 28:04I believe it has all four. Nice.
- 28:06Yeah, right. Yeah.
- 28:08It has the power.
- 28:08Yeah, the power. I was a Geo storm guy myself.
- 28:12It was the hot rod or the
- 28:15the the pussy magnet of the Geo range.
- 28:18Naturally. Yeah.
- 28:19No backseat. Oh, yeah.
- 28:21Yeah. Hatchback. So good.
- 28:25We've watched Mom and Dad, you know, you can fucking that car.
- 28:27I can confirm.
- 28:31It's just as hard as you would think a six foot one
- 28:33dude getting down in a Geo is.
- 28:35It's very difficult.
- 28:39Um, I don't I love this film.
- 28:41I I don't have much else to say other than it's great.
- 28:45Go watch it.
- 28:47Yeah, Chris, any kind of final thoughts on this one?
- 28:50It just feels like a movie that came 10 years too early or 10 years too late.
- 28:54I get this movie to come out in the late 90s or potentially now.
- 28:59I think it would I think it would be received better.
- 29:02But as it stands now, I think it's a ton of fun.
- 29:04And and I just want to highlight my favorite part is
- 29:07towards the end, doing that final chase when a ghost rider delivers a rock bottom
- 29:13to black out from one moving vehicle onto another moving vehicle.
- 29:18You just don't see that enough in movies.
- 29:20Oh, I have one huge complaint about this movie that I just remembered.
- 29:23When he sends Rourke back to hell, he tells him to go home.
- 29:28Yeah, it seems like a missed opportunity.
- 29:31Rather than saying go to hell.
- 29:33Yeah. But I think that's the joke.
- 29:35It's like we all know he's going to hell.
- 29:37So instead, he's saying go home.
- 29:40I just for as cool as I'm going to be.
- 29:42Every line of that movie tried to make it sound.
- 29:44That was the one to really kind of.
- 29:47That's a joke that required you to think more than this movie deserves.
- 29:51Yes. So.
- 29:53But I think about this movie a lot.
- 29:54Well, you guys know, at the end, his flames are blue.
- 29:58I guess that's because he's like he's good now or he has his soul back.
- 30:02I'm sure.
- 30:03Oh, man. Going back to the mid 90s, he's got that angel fire.
- 30:07Yeah, that's right.
- 30:09I've ever used cities, but it's fine.
- 30:11Me too. I was.
- 30:12A city's guy.
- 30:13Geocities rocked with my.
- 30:14Oh, fire was fucking assholes.
- 30:16Keeping with our geo theme.
- 30:18Yeah, right.
- 30:19Geos only.
- 30:20Geo podcast.
- 30:21And now we're talking about geocaching.
- 30:23Yeah. And geolocation.
- 30:26OK, so on the the matrix of good movie, good cage performance, bad movie,
- 30:31good, bad, bad, good, good.
- 30:34I think that that good movie, great movie, amazing, fun, awesome movie
- 30:39for in terms of cage performance.
- 30:40I'm going to say the same thing that I did with mom and dad is just like
- 30:42he's giving the performance that is expected of him and that the director wants.
- 30:47Like, it's not scratching at the door.
- 30:49Yeah, it's it's hammy.
- 30:52It's it's campy.
- 30:53And I am here for it.
- 30:55I think it's a good movie and
- 30:59a great performance.
- 31:01But I think it works like this.
- 31:04A hamminess works so much better in this than it does in something like mom and dad.
- 31:09I don't know. Mom and dad.
- 31:11I still I will put it on my fucking tombstone.
- 31:15Not a great movie.
- 31:16It's not a great movie.
- 31:17It's not even a fun movie.
- 31:19I got an 11.
- 31:21Yeah, we only got an 11 there saying that mom and dad's not a great movie.
- 31:24Yeah, very hot take.
- 31:26Yeah. Well, you know, I went back, I said, not a fun movie.
- 31:30Yeah. Chris, what do you think on this one?
- 31:34So I would say a flaws aside, budget being cut, I still think it's a good movie.
- 31:38But I'm pretty simple. If I like it, it's good.
- 31:41I don't care if it's stupid or quote unquote bad.
- 31:44If I like it, it's good.
- 31:45And I think it's a great cage performance.
- 31:47I think he knows what he's doing.
- 31:49He does it well.
- 31:51And I think it lets him play in that.
- 31:53He gets to do those facial expressions and do all that weird German stuff
- 31:57that he loves while being a superhero that he also loves.
- 32:02I can't recommend it's like I would describe this movie of
- 32:05if if an Iron Maiden album cover came to life,
- 32:09it would be Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance, I think. Yeah.
- 32:12Oh, I like that.
- 32:14So if you can only see two two Ghost Rider movies in your life,
- 32:17just watch this one twice. Yes.
- 32:21Speaking of segues, Connor.
- 32:23Man, I love your new format.
- 32:26It's so efficient.
- 32:29No one's even mentioned segues.
- 32:31We were talking about hoverboards, Sean.
- 32:33Oh, hell's a different.
- 32:34That was going to be when I get it.
- 32:36I'm like, I should do a segue now, but we were still talking about it.
- 32:41Be better at setups.
- 32:43Not for you.
- 32:45Health segue would be so fucking lame.
- 32:47It would just like go faster up a hill,
- 32:50but very stable.
- 32:51Can you imagine how cool you would look like rolling down by the pier like?
- 32:55On a hell segue.
- 32:58They'd still have to wear the hell helmet, though.
- 33:00Yeah, the helmet.
- 33:01My god damn it.
- 33:03Thanks for that setup.
- 33:05That I think.
- 33:10So, Con Air, a
- 33:12fucking love con.
- 33:14This movie is astounding.
- 33:17Ah, you're warming up again.
- 33:19I loved Con Air the first time.
- 33:22You just hate Garland Green.
- 33:24I can't wait to talk about Garland Green.
- 33:26Garland Green serves no fucking purpose.
- 33:27Thank God we're talking about it first.
- 33:29Let's get Garland Green is incredible.
- 33:33He fills the Hannibal Lecter role of the psychopaths on the airplane.
- 33:38Used it all in this film.
- 33:39It doesn't have to be.
- 33:41It's just like a menagerie of psychos on an airplane
- 33:47that all like fit into different, I don't know, film shits.
- 33:51And we're supposed to feel good about him just being loose
- 33:54at the end of this film.
- 33:55It's going to be president next year.
- 33:57Terrific. Yeah.
- 33:58Chris, what are your feelings on Garland Green?
- 34:01I mean, I'm pro Garland Green.
- 34:03It's like anytime you can.
- 34:04Nothing wrong.
- 34:05Yeah, yeah, we he was probably set up, first of all,
- 34:10because he had it.
- 34:10She's yeah.
- 34:12Allegedly, he's the most he's the most.
- 34:14You were a child's head across.
- 34:16He just said it was a woman's head.
- 34:18Let's be specific.
- 34:18Said girl.
- 34:19But yeah, she did.
- 34:20She does say girl.
- 34:21But he didn't say that he killed her.
- 34:24He could have found that head.
- 34:25He could have found that head. Yeah.
- 34:27Yeah. I mean, if I had a vehicle for every head I found and war,
- 34:32he had an opportunity to kill.
- 34:34He did not.
- 34:35He was the most sane person on that plane.
- 34:38Why the fuck was that little girl living there?
- 34:41I don't know.
- 34:42I mean, there were all sorts of people that lived around.
- 34:43That's true.
- 34:44It's probably the dude under the truck.
- 34:46Yeah.
- 34:46My wife and I watched this
- 34:49couple of days ago, and that scene, she was like clutching me.
- 34:53She was like, no, the little girl.
- 34:56As Garland Green says, most murders are like a crime of necessity.
- 35:01Not done out of passion.
- 35:03I do like his little like witticisms.
- 35:05I don't I don't hate the character.
- 35:07It's just it.
- 35:10I want I wanted a tighter story.
- 35:12That's all.
- 35:12I'm going to get a full chest Garland Green tattoo.
- 35:15I hope you do.
- 35:16Steve Buscemi's big bug eyes.
- 35:18Yeah.
- 35:19Definitely still looking in different directions for some reason.
- 35:24Can't fix that with tattoos.
- 35:27Your nipples.
- 35:31Oh, man.
- 35:32Yeah, this movie is pretty good.
- 35:34I had a good time with it the first time.
- 35:36I had forgotten like how much I actually do enjoy how stupid and fun it is.
- 35:40Yeah, it's a little too long for my taste, but, you know,
- 35:43I always think all these movies are too long because I'm grumpy and old now.
- 35:48This movie is great.
- 35:49It starts with it starts at an oil rig that just produces fire.
- 35:55As they're supposed to, as they're supposed to.
- 35:57He gets seven years for killing a man in self-defense.
- 36:02Yeah, that is such a dumb conceit of this entire thing.
- 36:04Everything in this movie is a dumb fucking conceit.
- 36:06None of this movie makes sense when you talk about it.
- 36:09I mean, it's a reason for him to have long hair.
- 36:11I do like that.
- 36:13So, Chris, what was your your first experience with Conair?
- 36:16Well, I don't know, my first six, my technically first experience
- 36:20was just seeing part of it when I went to see Face Off.
- 36:22Because I saw the drive in and so Connick, because Conair came out
- 36:25the week before Face Off, which is insane to think about that.
- 36:27Conair opened in theaters and then a week later, Face Off opened.
- 36:32So I remember very strong here.
- 36:35So I remember seeing part of it then.
- 36:37I don't know when I first watched it,
- 36:41but I'm a big fan, a big fan of Conair.
- 36:43And the thing I think is most interesting is actually like this is the movie.
- 36:48That this is a movie that made Cage kind of an action star.
- 36:51You know, The Rock came out the year before, two years before.
- 36:54But in that, you know, that's still Sean Connery and Michael Bay.
- 36:57And Cage is kind of like the nerdy character.
- 37:01Conair kind of turned him into an action star.
- 37:04And I think it's the movie that people kind of think of when they think of.
- 37:09Cage is this kind of like over the top actor
- 37:12that chews a lot of scenery.
- 37:14But despite his his accent, Cage is like pretty reserved
- 37:20and subtle in this movie compared to the rest of the cast.
- 37:23Like John C.
- 37:24Jack is the one who goes over the top, I think.
- 37:27Yeah, that's pretty accurate.
- 37:28I think everyone does like Nicholas Cage is pretty sedate in this film
- 37:32and doesn't even have that much that many lines all in all.
- 37:36It's actually a pretty restrained Ving Rhames performance, too,
- 37:40given that the other ones that we've seen with him,
- 37:42he's a lot more over the top.
- 37:44Yeah. Well, compared to bringing up the dead, for sure.
- 37:47Yeah. OK, so let's talk about the Rogues Gallery.
- 37:50Cyrus, the virus.
- 37:51You know, played by John Malcovich, Malcovich, Malcovich
- 37:55really steals this film.
- 37:59He is a terrific villain.
- 38:01Yeah, he's got great villain face, great villain goatee.
- 38:05He gets to talk about his stinking breath when killing children.
- 38:09That's cool.
- 38:11I love the anecdote about Malcovich getting the script
- 38:15and like being with his buddy who was also like his script reader advisor
- 38:19or whatever, and he just immediately chucks it.
- 38:21And then his friends like, good, that's a piece of shit.
- 38:24And he's like, no, no, I'm doing now.
- 38:26I just don't need to read it.
- 38:28I got it from page one.
- 38:30Yeah, perfect.
- 38:31I do like after Dave Chappelle's character Pinball dies
- 38:36and like when he finds out pinball, he's like, Oh, I like pinball,
- 38:40even though he fucking I cannot get over the fact that they made a fake Dave Chappelle.
- 38:45Oh, man. And it looks so bad, too.
- 38:49You know, at this point, though, I take fake Dave Chappelle any day of the week.
- 38:52Yeah, true enough.
- 38:53This is a much more promising Dave Chappelle.
- 38:56Yeah. Also, I think it's actually pretty clever the way
- 39:01Cameron Powe uses Dave Chappelle to write a note
- 39:04to exactly that's pretty smart for as dumb as this movie is.
- 39:08That's a that seems like a smart thing to do.
- 39:10I mean, there's a lot of collateral damage potentially from that.
- 39:12But yes, I was trying to think when did Cameron Powe
- 39:18learn about QSAC?
- 39:20Like, when did he know?
- 39:21Like, how did he know his name?
- 39:22Like, write him the note.
- 39:23He overheard because he was in the cabin for a second.
- 39:27He overheard them talking to Larkin.
- 39:28That's what I had to.
- 39:29Yeah. OK.
- 39:31You know, this really gets me thinking is like.
- 39:34That is a lot of collateral damage all over one guy's insulin shot.
- 39:40Like he loves baby.
- 39:41Yeah, he loves baby.
- 39:43And that's great.
- 39:44They shared snowballs, which was wildly irresponsible.
- 39:47Nicholas Cage is Cameron Powe responsible for baby's diabetes.
- 39:51Could be.
- 39:53Got him on those snowballs.
- 39:55He doesn't know they're called snowballs.
- 39:57Yeah, just those pink things.
- 39:59Yeah, those pink thing where they don't allow to say snow.
- 40:01No, because they show the packaging.
- 40:02Yeah. Right.
- 40:03Show the back.
- 40:04Like you could just read it.
- 40:05Oh, both of these movies feature hostess.
- 40:08Like, yeah.
- 40:10I want to talk about, you know, going back to.
- 40:12Sorry to.
- 40:13To go to.
- 40:13A lot.
- 40:14I fucking hate the way he eats that Twinkie and Ghost Rider.
- 40:18Smashes it open.
- 40:19Yeah. And then like fucking suck tubes it out.
- 40:23Gross.
- 40:24So I said to.
- 40:25I will say suck tube more in my life now.
- 40:29Suck tube is now a part of my common vernacular.
- 40:32Please.
- 40:33Got my lexicon.
- 40:35I do love that.
- 40:36What you got in Ghost Rider, though, where he touches a sandwich
- 40:40and it immediately rots and he touches the apple and in a meteor
- 40:42rot, he touches a Twinkie and it doesn't rot because it's already trash.
- 40:47He was also only touching the packaging for the Twinkie.
- 40:51But should also have like broken down.
- 40:53It's plastic.
- 40:54It would take a long time.
- 40:57Hold it for a minute.
- 40:58Just long enough to suck tube it.
- 41:01Also, the rules of what he what like degrades
- 41:04when he touches it were wildly in concise inconsistent.
- 41:07Yeah.
- 41:09OK, let's get back to Conair.
- 41:10It's wildly inconsistent.
- 41:15Yeah. So we were talking about
- 41:18our damage, Malcovich.
- 41:20Boom. OK, we've talked about Malcovich.
- 41:21All done. Pinball done. Baby.
- 41:24Oh, done. Well, he's not.
- 41:25He's not Rogues gallery.
- 41:27I mean, he's still a criminal, but yeah, he is kind of well, true.
- 41:32He is kind of a villain.
- 41:34In his own right, because he has diabetes.
- 41:37Yeah. Yeah, gross.
- 41:38The police and or the guards in this film villains,
- 41:41all of them, except for the lady guard.
- 41:43Yeah, she's cool. Yeah.
- 41:45Ship. Yeah, Bishop is good.
- 41:48That dude with the mustache, what an asshole.
- 41:52What's that? OK.
- 41:53I always forget this guy's name, the one who is flying the plane.
- 41:56Swamp Thing Swamp Thing.
- 41:59What's so MC Ganey, MC Ganey.
- 42:01OK, he's a Ganey fucking love a good MC Ganey.
- 42:04So here is everything.
- 42:06He is awesome.
- 42:07He is my favorite trash human being.
- 42:11He is always sorry, Sean.
- 42:12You've been replaced no matter what.
- 42:15But yeah, he's fucking awesome. I love MC Ganey.
- 42:17I miss my mustache.
- 42:19Speaking of things that didn't age well from the 90s,
- 42:22the flamboyant queer character, queer villain.
- 42:28Well, we talked about this, I think.
- 42:29Yeah, with my brother.
- 42:30Yeah. Sally can't dance.
- 42:32The character is based on a real life person
- 42:39who was like, I don't know, gender queer or something in the prison system.
- 42:46So quit hating on the gays.
- 42:48Still not a great representation. Yeah.
- 42:51It's very much of its time.
- 42:54Yeah. Yeah.
- 42:54I mean, it's usually the rock.
- 42:58I think that, yeah.
- 42:59The hairdresser and the hairdresser.
- 43:01I think the only thing with Sally can't dance that's kind of shitty
- 43:04is just that he slaps her versus it's like, oh, well, that's a lady.
- 43:10Well, she did not try to set him on fire.
- 43:12That's true. So no, no punching.
- 43:14Good. Off the table.
- 43:15You get punched, Dave Chappelle, though.
- 43:18Because he did set someone.
- 43:18He did set someone on fire.
- 43:20Yeah. Fucking punch Dave Chappelle.
- 43:22You heard it here, folks.
- 43:25Or set him on fire.
- 43:27Either one is fine.
- 43:28Yeah, it's tit for tat at that point, right?
- 43:31Yeah. Pretty sure he called the Native American guy, Coach Ease also.
- 43:34He did. He was he was very.
- 43:38He was very nice.
- 43:39Yeah. To who'd have guessed?
- 43:41Chappelle.
- 43:44Shocking all of us.
- 43:47The foresight of Conair.
- 43:50They've only we'd listened.
- 43:53I think my only beef with this entire movie, like it's it's popcorn,
- 43:57like from start to finish.
- 43:58I think it is just a little too long.
- 44:00I think you could have ended it after the plane crashes.
- 44:03I don't think you need that last fire truck fight.
- 44:07And also the like smasher that is just there.
- 44:10Are you kidding me?
- 44:11V, you mean definitively the best death in a film ever?
- 44:18I'm going to stab you through the ankle.
- 44:20I'm going to run you through a raise you up on a ladder
- 44:25so that you go flying through a bridge, somehow losing the handcuff.
- 44:30Like you're now uncuffed. Whatever.
- 44:32It's cool because you're going to land on like perfectly high voltage
- 44:38transmission wires.
- 44:39You're going to get shocked.
- 44:40But guess what? You're not dead.
- 44:42You're landing on a conveyor belt in a smasher and we're going to bust you.
- 44:47That's so fucking cool.
- 44:49No, this movie needs that, Peter.
- 44:51You're wrong. It's like they take out the take out the fire truck part
- 44:54or like take out the airplane crash or something like just remove
- 44:57one of the other elements.
- 44:58Now, that's all perfect.
- 44:59Now, we need to remove is.
- 45:02Don't say Garland Green.
- 45:03I'm not going to say Garland Green.
- 45:04I'm not talking about.
- 45:05All the issue and is the hand cut his his arm.
- 45:08His arm should have been like ripped off when he flew.
- 45:11Oh, man.
- 45:12It's perfect.
- 45:13If it makes sense, physically tore his hand off
- 45:16and then he went through the bridge and got shocked.
- 45:19Oh, that would have been so much cooler.
- 45:22Yeah, that would have elevated this movie.
- 45:23Just add that one little bit.
- 45:26There's room for expansion.
- 45:27There's just so many like.
- 45:30I went through a bridge at four in the morning.
- 45:32I don't give a fuck.
- 45:34There's just so many parts within the narrative.
- 45:36And again, Nick, before you fucking get mad at me for this,
- 45:39I do genuinely love this film,
- 45:41but there are just so many parts in the story that you just have to ignore
- 45:44or they have to just create reasons to keep the movie going,
- 45:49to keep the plot going.
- 45:51And I'm just like, we can just streamline some of this and we lose nothing.
- 45:56Sure.
- 45:57You there are definitely things that could have been edited out.
- 46:02Like I was talking to Peter about it.
- 46:03And Peter's like, we don't need cool.
- 46:04Meaning I'm like, no, you need to mean you rewatch it.
- 46:06You don't need cool. Meaning.
- 46:07No. I mean, he has some funny lines, I guess.
- 46:11How many of these films do you own, Chris?
- 46:13I'm pretty sure I own.
- 46:15If it's available on Blu-ray, I have it.
- 46:18Nice for cage.
- 46:21I want to talk about the collateral damage a little bit.
- 46:23So we talked about it a little bit.
- 46:24This movie definitely has some of the most collateral damage of any movie.
- 46:29And there's actually a great part where they're one to shoot down
- 46:32the plane over an empty desert.
- 46:34And they're like, look,
- 46:36these people will die, but we'll save so many lives.
- 46:38And Q's acts like, no, don't do it.
- 46:40Don't do it.
- 46:41And obviously, it crashes into the Vegas.
- 46:46Old Vegas, I think, is where it crashes through the layout of Vegas.
- 46:49No sense. Fremont.
- 46:52Area. Yeah.
- 46:53Because you get the the LED screen with the jets and everything.
- 46:58What's the area that has the most smashers for people's heads?
- 47:03But what I like about it is at the end, after everything happens,
- 47:07Q's act comments, he makes he makes a comment about like,
- 47:11yeah, you know what, maybe we should have maybe made more sense
- 47:14to just shoot it down.
- 47:15I can't remember the exact line, but he comments on the fact that
- 47:18they created a lot more damage by letting it go.
- 47:22Yeah, my wife was really the whole plane crashing scene.
- 47:26She was just like the casualty.
- 47:28Well, they were trying to drive the airplane towards the airport
- 47:32because there was a landing strip that was going to be completely clear for them.
- 47:36But Ganey was like, Nope, we're landing on the strip.
- 47:39And the word is crash.
- 47:43Swamping. Yeah, I fucking love it.
- 47:46To be fair, I don't think he I think they they were going down, right?
- 47:50They lost an engine. I think. Yeah.
- 47:52Come on, Swamp Thing is not going to just crash into people.
- 47:55He's a good guy.
- 47:56He would have went to the airport if he could make it.
- 47:58Swamp Thing did nothing. If he had the option, he would have run to the airport.
- 48:02He did the best he could.
- 48:04I think Conair also has maybe the highest ratio of like dudes
- 48:08walking away from explosions in any movie.
- 48:11Oh, it's got some really good ones.
- 48:13There are. Yeah, there are a lot of explosions and dudes who walk away from them.
- 48:17Yeah, almost.
- 48:18I think everyone virtually everyone in the main cast gets to walk away
- 48:21from at least one explosion and QZAC and cage both gets a dive.
- 48:26Yeah, I was really disappointed with Nicolas Cage running away from the explosion
- 48:31there at the Lerner Air Air Base or whatever,
- 48:36because I mean, you could tell there was like a green screen or whatever.
- 48:41Like he was just, I don't know, emotionally dead.
- 48:45He could have been jogging to the restroom.
- 48:48No, because you have some sense of urgency in that.
- 48:52He just had like such a placid face like, I'm just going for a stroll.
- 48:57It's the most obvious use of green screen in the movie, too.
- 49:00It's like that's the one where it really does stand out.
- 49:03I would also say the when QZAC's in the prison and the bomb goes off.
- 49:08Oh, sure.
- 49:09Because the door like flips over him and like slams into the wall.
- 49:12And then when the plane goes down and the propeller comes loose
- 49:16and it comes right. Oh, right between.
- 49:18That was sick, though. Yeah. I enjoyed that.
- 49:21I also like that QZAC wears brick and stocks.
- 49:24This whole which is his choice.
- 49:27I love his giant suit as well.
- 49:29Those are the way straight up prison slippers.
- 49:32Like they're made of plastic and they're definitely not comfortable.
- 49:37Yeah, apparently QZAC was like, I'll do this movie, but I get to wear brick and stocks.
- 49:43So gross.
- 49:44He compared it to Charleston Heston and like the old like sword and sandal movies and stuff.
- 49:51I think it's a fun, fun little touch.
- 49:53I mean, that is
- 49:55it's definitely interesting.
- 49:57I enjoy QZAC.
- 49:58He's a weird, weird guy.
- 50:01This is just one of two QZAC cage overlaps, though.
- 50:04Yeah, just this in frozen ground, right?
- 50:05Yeah. There's also a minor.
- 50:08No, our arsenal.
- 50:10Oh, OK. Yeah, that's not on ours.
- 50:13Yeah, we didn't end up putting that in the bracket, but yeah.
- 50:15Yeah, there's also a minor.
- 50:17Arsenal's not great. So that makes sense.
- 50:21Well, good. I'm glad we didn't put it in.
- 50:23Don't worry. I own it.
- 50:24We can watch it any time. Fantastic.
- 50:26I did a giveaway of our son. I gave me like three copies of those.
- 50:30I have a VHS copy of City of Angels just begging to be given away.
- 50:37I can't give it away. It was a Christmas gift.
- 50:40The fact that you have a VHS of it, you do have to just like frame it.
- 50:43Put it in a shadow. Yeah, probably.
- 50:45Yeah. Whenever I buckled down and purchased my replica of the beast,
- 50:50I'll get a shadow box for City of Angels as well.
- 50:53Perfect. Put it right next to it.
- 50:55Place of honor.
- 50:57It's like, wow, Nick, you have very diverse taste.
- 51:02For Nicholas Cage.
- 51:06So within the matrix of good, bad, bad, good, where do we want to put this one?
- 51:12I'm going to stick with terrific film.
- 51:16Terrific cage.
- 51:18I say terrific film.
- 51:20Scattershot cage.
- 51:22Yeah, I'll wait for my defense.
- 51:26I would go excellent film. Excellent cage.
- 51:28I think I'm with with Nick and Chris on this one.
- 51:31I think it's a pretty excellent performance.
- 51:33I think the accent work is really shitty, but it doesn't matter.
- 51:36We we've never gone to Nicholas Cage for accent work.
- 51:40Never like unless he's a Boston cop.
- 51:43Oh, he nails that one. Yeah.
- 51:46Never been working on it.
- 51:47His accent. And this is interesting, too, because it like sometimes he goes into
- 51:51it is raising Arizona accent, which also doesn't make any sense.
- 51:55Is some like I don't know anyone from Arizona that talks like that.
- 51:58Whatever that accent is that he's doing, but it it doesn't matter.
- 52:02It's still excellent.
- 52:04Yeah, he's never been able to put an accent to a location.
- 52:08Well, but you know, he gets out there and he does it.
- 52:12He just tries, man. I respect it. Yeah.
- 52:16But I really think that being
- 52:20just a straight action film like this, he
- 52:24he was also like what this came out before face off, he said.
- 52:29Yeah, the week before.
- 52:30So it's like he got to
- 52:32do something a little different with an action film like this.
- 52:36And, you know, it's it's not as woozy, wowsy, wild.
- 52:41But it's it's a great action film performance.
- 52:45I would have put him up against Stallone any day.
- 52:47He's jacked as fuck.
- 52:50Well, yeah, it would, because right before this, he did
- 52:53Wedwalk West bringing out the not bringing out the dead.
- 52:57We just talked with Kiss of Death was around this time as well.
- 52:59That's why he's so.
- 53:00Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, that's right.
- 53:02But yeah.
- 53:03Yeah, he does that thing where he's like sitting cross legged on the ground
- 53:07and just like lifts himself up with his arms.
- 53:09He's just holding himself up.
- 53:11Oh, just on his fingertips.
- 53:13Yeah, that made my arthritis hurt.
- 53:18It's a bit of a sort of a trombo movie, right?
- 53:21I think people kind of remember it more as a cage vehicle,
- 53:24but it's really about the whole the whole whole cast.
- 53:27Yeah, the sum of its parts.
- 53:29Yeah, it's nothing without Garland Green.
- 53:31Yeah, exactly.
- 53:32And speaking of the vehicle, the plane kind of looks like the plane from Tellspin
- 53:37a little bit. Oh, it does.
- 53:39Very similar design.
- 53:41I don't know if the Jerry Brockheimer produced Tellspin.
- 53:45I would not be shocked to find out, but I don't think so.
- 53:48I really want that to be true, though.
- 53:51Yeah. Yeah.
- 53:51Jerry Brockheimer produced Tellspin movie.
- 53:54Hmm. Not until we get national.
- 53:58Yeah. Could be the same thing.
- 54:00Oh, we're going to get turned up on board.
- 54:04So at this point, I'm kind of curious, Chris,
- 54:07what is your favorite cage movie?
- 54:09I know you did the bracket yourself and Raising Arizona came out on top, but like
- 54:13that was six years ago, and it's been a very productive six years.
- 54:18It has been. Yeah.
- 54:19I really stopped doing that column at like the wrong time
- 54:23because he really like got like a second wind right around the time they stopped.
- 54:28A Rosing Arizona is my favorite cage movie.
- 54:30I've got a top four that's pretty solid.
- 54:34And the fifth is like kind of varies.
- 54:36But Raising Arizona, Wild at Heart, Valley Girl, Face Off.
- 54:40Those are my top four.
- 54:42Easy number five kind of fluctuates.
- 54:47Adaptation, bringing out the dead.
- 54:49The two that most common that I would say.
- 54:52Oh, no crap.
- 54:53Did we got Red Rock West?
- 54:54Red Rock West is amazing.
- 54:56Red Rock West is number five.
- 54:59So bringing out the dead and adaptation, battle it out for number six.
- 55:02Fair. I'm glad you mentioned Valley Girl.
- 55:04I think that one is a little underrated.
- 55:06Valley Girl was such a great film.
- 55:08It just went up against Vampire's Kiss for us.
- 55:11And that was unfortunate.
- 55:13It's just bracketology, right?
- 55:14Like it hit a fucking top seat or well, not even a top seat
- 55:18because that one's not rated crazy well, but it's that movie is fantastic.
- 55:22But yeah, Valley Girl is a lot of fun.
- 55:24And I still I listen to the Sparks album.
- 55:27They feature on that one all the time.
- 55:30Valley Girl is a great example, too, because I think,
- 55:32you know, when Cage started doing, you know, it's kind of like
- 55:36I think Wicker Man is kind of when like Cage's star
- 55:39kind of start to drop a little bit
- 55:41and he started doing more direct to video stuff and started getting more negative reviews.
- 55:46I think that's around the same time that people started
- 55:48kind of like latching on to this idea that Cage always goes over the top.
- 55:51He'll do anything.
- 55:53And this is a new thing.
- 55:54But if you watch Valley Girl, he's been the same actor.
- 55:58He's always had that in him.
- 55:59He has plenty. He has a cage freak out in Valley Girl.
- 56:02It's no different than anything you would see in Ghost Rider.
- 56:06Yeah. Well, he even got to like break out a little bit
- 56:09and say like Peggy Sue got married and.
- 56:12Yeah, that's a great example, too.
- 56:14A lot of his older works. He's got great examples. Yeah. Yeah.
- 56:17Yeah. So of these two films and keep in mind,
- 56:21your opinion does not matter in this context, but which film would you like to see go ahead?
- 56:25This is actually really tough.
- 56:28I feel like on one hand, I want to see Conair because I have some more
- 56:32like pop cultural significance to it.
- 56:37But I'm going to go Ghost Rider because I just love it more.
- 56:41I'd rather watch Ghost Rider more.
- 56:42It's more fun for me.
- 56:44It's more cage.
- 56:46And I think Conair is less cage
- 56:51than deserving for this bracket.
- 56:53So I would Ghost Rider, Spirit of Vengeance would get my vote.
- 56:57Like I was thinking about this and Conair is definitely the much more memeable film.
- 57:02It's the one like you say, Nicolas Cage.
- 57:04People are going to think the hair and the just that.
- 57:07But it really is more of an ensemble cast and he doesn't have
- 57:11the most screen time in it.
- 57:12And when you take Ghost Rider, which is a tight film,
- 57:18very little fat to cut off, you know, campy dialogue,
- 57:21but is just a blast from start to finish.
- 57:25I'd have to go Ghost Rider as well.
- 57:27Hmm. Yeah, I've struggled with this one a lot.
- 57:33I think based on most of my
- 57:38my metrics that I've used in the past, which are wildly conflicting,
- 57:44I think I want to go Conair
- 57:47because if I'm thinking about this as a movie, I'm going to recommend to somebody.
- 57:52It's got the widest appeal.
- 57:55I mean, it's bookended by
- 57:58how do I live without you?
- 58:03Do do do do.
- 58:06It's got the bunny.
- 58:08I guess it's got the memeable moments, but I don't think I don't.
- 58:12I don't know. I don't consider those memeable moments.
- 58:15I consider them memorable moments. Fine.
- 58:19It is the like one of these movies has been forgotten by time.
- 58:22And I think that's unfortunate.
- 58:24Yeah. Well, I don't know if it was forgotten by time.
- 58:26It just came out at a poor time.
- 58:28So I guess I'm going to go Conair.
- 58:30It's it's a it's a timeless classic.
- 58:34It it fits any time unless you're short on time.
- 58:38But it's I don't know.
- 58:44It's a solid film.
- 58:45And, you know, I mean, they're both solid.
- 58:47Yes, I'm not. I'm not disagreeing with you.
- 58:50I'm not disagreeing with you either.
- 58:51I would definitely.
- 58:53I'll just kiss.
- 58:54Mm hmm.
- 58:55Do you have for audio?
- 58:58It's too loud.
- 58:59Yeah, blow. It's very well.
- 59:01Turn the game down.
- 59:02Turn that MC Ganey down.
- 59:04Yeah, so this is another rare Peter.
- 59:10Too much power coming this direction.
- 59:12No, I did actually think about this.
- 59:13I love Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance.
- 59:15I think it's a fucking fantastic movie.
- 59:17It's one of my favorite comic book movies.
- 59:20But watching Conair with Rachel,
- 59:24I was like, oh, yeah, this is like this is part of the mix.
- 59:28Like, there's a reason it exists as a movie that everyone talks about for Nick Cage.
- 59:33It's it's when he was at the peak of his power the first time,
- 59:37and then it just goes to shit.
- 59:39And I love that he's got the resurgence.
- 59:42But I there's something about like 90 schlock
- 59:45that still holds some power over me that Ghost Rider doesn't hit,
- 59:49even though I fucking love that movie.
- 59:52So I think for this situation, I have to push Conair.
- 59:56Also, it now has to go up against face off,
- 59:59which I think is going to be fun to talk about,
- 1:00:01because those are two super powerhouses.
- 1:00:04And one must leave. So.
- 1:00:07That's no, I mean, I don't disagree with any of what you either of you said.
- 1:00:11I. I like both these movies quite a bit.
- 1:00:15Yeah, Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance, everyone should watch it.
- 1:00:17It's a fucking romp.
- 1:00:18I wish wish we could have gotten the full budget are rated like no fucks given.
- 1:00:25Yeah, that totally could have changed.
- 1:00:27Yeah, 100 percent.
- 1:00:28You know, we were robbed.
- 1:00:30I want to do your bit about Connor being 90 schlock is a really good point,
- 1:00:35because I don't think this is such a Jerry Brockheimer produced movie.
- 1:00:38And I feel like action movies,
- 1:00:42we don't get action movies in the same way with this type of ensemble cast.
- 1:00:45That's kind of like the DNA for like for the Fast and Furious movies.
- 1:00:48But even they're not they're not on air.
- 1:00:53No, they're great, but they're not.
- 1:00:55Conair.
- 1:00:57People involved in those watch Tokyo,
- 1:00:59people in those movies take them take themselves,
- 1:01:01their careers in those movies way too seriously.
- 1:01:04Yeah, exactly.
- 1:01:06Conair, everyone knew what Connor was.
- 1:01:09I felt all intentional to me.
- 1:01:11None of it.
- 1:01:12You the way you kept saying, immobile.
- 1:01:15Yeah, I would say memorable works better because me mobile to me
- 1:01:18is you're kind of poking fun of it.
- 1:01:20You're making you're taking scenes out of context and laughing at it.
- 1:01:24But I don't think you can do that with Conair because Conair knows what it is.
- 1:01:27And everything's intentional.
- 1:01:28I think there's nothing in that movie where somebody does something
- 1:01:32and we laugh because they didn't know it was funny,
- 1:01:35I guess, except for maybe Cage's accent.
- 1:01:37Yeah, I do find it funny though.
- 1:01:39The whole everything's intentional considering that script
- 1:01:43was being rewritten every fucking day.
- 1:01:45Oh, yeah.
- 1:01:46What a nightmare that would be to this script is being written.
- 1:01:50But I feel like all those actors knew what they were doing.
- 1:01:52And yes, yeah, 100 percent.
- 1:01:55All right. Well, that settles that one.
- 1:01:59How do I live without you?
- 1:02:04Well, thanks for thanks for coming on, Chris.
- 1:02:06Do you have anything you want to pitch to our audience of mostly our friends?
- 1:02:11Yeah, I mean, letterbox is always good.
- 1:02:14Just Chris underscore gospel.
- 1:02:16And then, yeah, some school rejects again.
- 1:02:18I mostly just write in October now, usually.
- 1:02:21But I do a lot in October every year.
- 1:02:25And then, yeah, on the Rocket League field,
- 1:02:28you can you can find me on a rocket league every night pretty much.
- 1:02:32Does your car have a sweet name?
- 1:02:34I don't know anything.
- 1:02:35Well, I know the basics of Rocket League, but do you get to name your car?
- 1:02:41Not name your car, but you can you can have teams.
- 1:02:44And I do have a team and we are werewolves on wheels.
- 1:02:48Wheels on wheels. I like that.
- 1:02:49I was a fellow film school rejects writer.
- 1:02:55Yeah, where cats you missed where cats, man, come on.
- 1:02:58Well, everyone's on wheels is a good 70s
- 1:03:02alliteration, rotation movie.
- 1:03:03So, oh, gotcha. All right.
- 1:03:05That tracks Nick, what's the name of your spaceship and hell divers?

- 1:05:03I will tell you, as a parent, you do lie in makeup cards
- 1:05:06that look like a child wrote them.
- 1:05:08I do that. Your child doesn't want to do it.
- 1:05:09I mean, I do that with my pets, so I get it.
- 1:05:11Yeah. How many times is that actually successfully fooled someone?
- 1:05:18Don't ask follow up questions.

- 1:05:21We do. Do know some dumb people.
- 1:05:23Wait, Corden, write me that letter.
