- 0:22Speaker 1: through as this podcast is about connecting, empowering, knowledge sharing

- 0:30Speaker 1: today and lasting impact for tomorrow.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Let's get into it. She's on the Money.
- 0:36Speaker 3: She's on the Money.
- 0:57Speaker 4: Hello, and welcome to She's on Them, the podcast with
- 1:01Speaker 4: millennials who want a financial freedom Today. My friends, guess
- 1:05Speaker 4: what it is Friday again, which means it is time
- 1:07Speaker 4: to get my little team together to celebrate you our
- 1:11Speaker 4: incredible She's on the Money community, Miss Jess Gric is here.
- 1:15Speaker 4: She's going to be sharing our money wins and confessions
- 1:17Speaker 4: from the community.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Beck say ed, You've got a.
- 1:19Speaker 4: Few breake tips for us which you've get kept all
- 1:22Speaker 4: day up until now, so I have literally no inslash
- 1:25Speaker 4: as to whether they're going to be good or not.
- 1:27Speaker 4: We're going to be helping to answer a juicy money dilemma,
- 1:30Speaker 4: which this week is all about investing in commercial or
- 1:33Speaker 4: residential properties as a first time investor, And we're going
- 1:37Speaker 4: to be unpacking something you slid into our DMS about
- 1:39Speaker 4: which this week we're talking about helping a friend pay
- 1:43Speaker 4: for mental health support.
- 1:45Speaker 2: So before we.
- 1:46Speaker 4: Get there, I want to know how have your weeks been?
- 1:50Speaker 4: Beck stopped trying to get Jess to answer first.
- 1:54Speaker 5: I need time to think.
- 1:55Speaker 6: No, my week has been really really good. I feel
- 1:59Speaker 6: so productive, you know, like at the start of the year.
- 2:01Speaker 7: Like what I did was like I feel like a
- 2:03Speaker 7: lot of people are, you know, doing the calendar, being
- 2:05Speaker 7: the diary, and I was rudding down.
- 2:07Speaker 2: All these like little goals and I've.
- 2:09Speaker 6: So far stuck to them.
- 2:11Speaker 7: Like I you guys noticed that you saw me like
- 2:14Speaker 7: touching my try set before I'm like, oh, my goodness,
- 2:16Speaker 7: I feel so good.
- 2:19Speaker 4: Like swoll Oh that's a word that I haven't heard
- 2:24Speaker 4: on this podcast before.
- 2:25Speaker 3: True.
- 2:25Speaker 4: Yeah, well maybe we could swap that for so Becky's
- 2:28Speaker 4: feeling swollen. I'm going to start using swollen because have
- 2:32Speaker 4: you seen that ad? You know how every year in January,
- 2:35Speaker 4: Lamb Australia drops their lamb ad.
- 2:37Speaker 5: Yes right.
- 2:38Speaker 4: I feel personally victimized by that video because they've got
- 2:42Speaker 4: this whole lamber and if you haven't seen it, just
- 2:44Speaker 4: google it because it is quite funny. Like I think
- 2:46Speaker 4: my favorite part of it is your phone lights on
- 2:48Speaker 4: talking about the grandparents. But they're like stereotype millennial, also
- 2:53Speaker 4: using the word slay, and I was like, I need
- 2:55Speaker 4: to see myself out, not googe.
- 2:59Speaker 5: But classic product of the millennium.
- 3:01Speaker 2: I was like, I feel attacked.
- 3:03Speaker 4: It's Jessicchie, what have you been doing this week? What
- 3:07Speaker 4: do you mean when you want to talk about your
- 3:08Speaker 4: bad luck strength? I know you know what I feel like.
- 3:11Speaker 4: People are probably sick of hearing me feel sorry.
- 3:13Speaker 2: What happened this week?
- 3:15Speaker 5: My cat knocked over a mirror, and I'm worried that
- 3:19Speaker 5: that's going to bring significantly more bad luck. I was
- 3:20Speaker 5: just telling the girls, I'm not a superstitious person. It's
- 3:24Speaker 5: not normally my stick, but I have had such a
- 3:26Speaker 5: bad run of it that when the mirror fell over,
- 3:28Speaker 5: I was immediately googling how to reverse the bad luck.
- 3:31Speaker 4: And I me and you were like, guess what I'm doing.
- 3:35Speaker 5: I went outside. I threw some salt over my shoulder,
- 3:37Speaker 5: and I spun in a circle anti clockwise three times
- 3:40Speaker 5: because the Internet told me that would hope to do.
- 3:42Speaker 2: You think it worked?
- 3:43Speaker 5: Nothing bad touch wood has happened, desks would Nothing bad
- 3:50Speaker 5: has happened yet, so TVs. But you know, it's been
- 3:53Speaker 5: a sunny week. We're hanging out with the girlies, might
- 3:56Speaker 5: get some lunch together later. It's on the up and up.
- 3:57Speaker 5: We're looking for the positive.
- 3:59Speaker 4: Nothing bad happened since Jessica spun anti clockwise in three
- 4:03Speaker 4: circles and threw salt over her shoulder. So that's the
- 4:06Speaker 4: secret secret to success.
- 4:08Speaker 6: Wow, how's your weeking?
- 4:10Speaker 4: I spent a lot of this week horizontal. Yeah, like
- 4:15Speaker 4: working with a laptop on my stomach because just life
- 4:19Speaker 4: is getting uncomfortable.
- 4:20Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 4:21Speaker 4: I'm committed though, so like I'm not going anywhere. I'm
- 4:24Speaker 4: here on the podcast. Unlucky for you guys, people keep
- 4:27Speaker 4: asking me when are you taking matt leave? And I'm like,
- 4:29Speaker 4: I guess when I go into labor because I won't
- 4:31Speaker 4: have any other choice.
- 4:33Speaker 5: Kind of gotta test her.
- 4:34Speaker 2: And my team are like when do we get rid
- 4:36Speaker 2: of her?
- 4:39Speaker 4: That we'd have a date to look forward to, and
- 4:40Speaker 4: I'm like, haha, joke's on you. I could have this
- 4:43Speaker 4: baby next week and it be fine, or in six weeks.
- 4:45Speaker 5: You're never gonna know. I think I just live in
- 4:47Speaker 5: constant fear that at any second you could just start
- 4:51Speaker 5: having the baby, and that like that is what I'm
- 4:53Speaker 5: looking for, Like it's not you going away, it's just
- 4:55Speaker 5: me no longer living in fear that at any given
- 4:57Speaker 5: point in time a baby could just shoot on out.
- 5:01Speaker 2: And I do no, no, but pretty.
- 5:04Speaker 5: Calm in a crisis.
- 5:05Speaker 2: I'm actually quite good unless it's her crisis.
- 5:08Speaker 5: Yeah, unless it's my internal mental crisis or that's her off.
- 5:12Speaker 5: But no, like I think I would be okay.
- 5:14Speaker 7: Yeah, Victoria, right now water breaks starts going to labor you,
- 5:18Speaker 7: I feel like you would be really good.
- 5:20Speaker 5: I mean, the thing is obviously you're immediately on the
- 5:22Speaker 5: phone to the ambulance and just took you through it. Nah,
- 5:25Speaker 5: you don't like just because your water breaks depends how
- 5:28Speaker 5: close to your contractions.
- 5:29Speaker 2: Are, Okay, do you know?
- 5:31Speaker 4: Do you know what I find really funny because you
- 5:33Speaker 4: have freaked out about this Gabby who works for she's
- 5:36Speaker 4: on the money and has been on the pod before
- 5:37Speaker 4: she's worked this out. One of her girlfriends is a midwife.
- 5:40Speaker 4: She's full of been like, well, what happens if he
- 5:42Speaker 4: goes into labor?
- 5:42Speaker 2: What do I do?
- 5:43Speaker 4: And like her housemate has like prepped her for this. Oh,
- 5:46Speaker 4: I think it's so funny because I'm so chill about it.
- 5:49Speaker 4: Like I think I'm the most chill person in the
- 5:51Speaker 4: entire team about it.
- 5:52Speaker 1: I'm like, Oh, if.
- 5:53Speaker 2: You'll be fine, you'd be fine.
- 5:57Speaker 4: My husband's really worried because obviously be Jess and I
- 6:01Speaker 4: are going to the Taylor Swift concert together. Yes, this
- 6:04Speaker 4: has to be when I am thirty nine weeks pregnant.
- 6:08Speaker 4: I regret nothing about this decision.
- 6:10Speaker 5: Baby's first concept, baby's first babies' contant, so I'm excited
- 6:16Speaker 5: about it.
- 6:16Speaker 4: My husband was a little like, well, what happens if
- 6:18Speaker 4: you go into labor? I'm like, dude, the MCG isn't
- 6:20Speaker 4: much closer to the hospital that we're going to than
- 6:23Speaker 4: our house. Is so chill, I'll meet you there. I
- 6:25Speaker 4: can get a new bar. I'm a completely self sufficient
- 6:27Speaker 4: independent woman.
- 6:28Speaker 7: Were I feel like tasors would be partial to assisting
- 6:33Speaker 7: with the birth.
- 6:34Speaker 4: I draw the line naming my baby Taylor, though, yeah, oh.
- 6:38Speaker 5: Like absolutely. I mean it's respectful to the queen.
- 6:44Speaker 4: I'm not to be disrespectful to the queen. And the
- 6:46Speaker 4: name Taylor is not even a bad name, like that's
- 6:48Speaker 4: not why. It just feels a little bit too swifty,
- 6:51Speaker 4: too swifty.
- 6:52Speaker 2: We can't exactly doing that exactly, so for a boy
- 6:55Speaker 2: or a girl, we don't know the gender. Try I
- 6:58Speaker 2: love an androgynous name.
- 7:00Speaker 6: I'm back on board, all right, I'm sorry.
- 7:03Speaker 2: Sorry, let's move on, though.
- 7:04Speaker 4: I want to know more about the community, less about
- 7:07Speaker 4: me going into apparently spontaneous labor that is going to
- 7:12Speaker 4: happen really quickly, so quickly that the paramedics will not
- 7:15Speaker 4: be able to make it, but just has to deliver
- 7:17Speaker 4: my baby.
- 7:18Speaker 5: My mind is literally like, oh my god, I'm pregnant.
- 7:20Speaker 2: Shock something pregnant.
- 7:24Speaker 7: It's also quicker because you mean, like you, I think
- 7:27Speaker 7: you were to say I'm in labor.
- 7:28Speaker 2: I'm sure, but you.
- 7:29Speaker 6: Said I'm pregnant.
- 7:31Speaker 7: That is incredibly fine, but that's usually how it works.
- 7:37Speaker 3: Moving on.
- 7:39Speaker 4: I don't have a birth plan. I have birth preferences, right,
- 7:42Speaker 4: and I can go into that on socials or something
- 7:44Speaker 4: if people are actually interested. But there's a reason Jess
- 7:47Speaker 4: and Gabby are not involved, like they're not part of
- 7:50Speaker 4: the preferences. In fact, my preference would be to not
- 7:53Speaker 4: have them there because I feel like they'd both be
- 7:56Speaker 4: like running around like headless chickens.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Going what do you need?
- 7:59Speaker 5: What do you need?
- 8:00Speaker 2: To leave me alone?
- 8:01Speaker 7: Sure?
- 8:02Speaker 5: Coincidentally, it is also our preference to not be there
- 8:06Speaker 5: for everybody should go winky.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Dig right, what has the community got to share with us?
- 8:11Speaker 3: All right?
- 8:11Speaker 5: My first money in this week comes from Hannah, who
- 8:13Speaker 5: said money win. Using chat GPT to do a meal
- 8:17Speaker 5: plan for my family of three, two adults and one team.
- 8:20Speaker 5: I requested a budget of one hundred to one hundred
- 8:22Speaker 5: and twenty dollars for five dinners with five adult portions
- 8:25Speaker 5: extra lunches for the next day. I just did the
- 8:28Speaker 5: shop at Audi and it came in at one hundred
- 8:30Speaker 5: and ten dollars for all of the ingredients. I then
- 8:32Speaker 5: added some snacks and some breakfast and it came to
- 8:34Speaker 5: one hundred and fifty five bucks for the week. If
- 8:37Speaker 5: you're a beginner meal plan, utilizing chat GPT is a
- 8:40Speaker 5: game changer. And I want to know if Hannah got
- 8:42Speaker 5: this tip from our Instagram because I was.
- 8:44Speaker 2: About to say.
- 8:44Speaker 4: I have been using it recently with Jess, but we've
- 8:47Speaker 4: been using the Microsoft co pilot and we were like,
- 8:51Speaker 4: we need to create some content for socials and we're like, well,
- 8:54Speaker 4: let's actually make it good because obviously, but like we
- 8:59Speaker 4: just told them what we have in our pantry and
- 9:01Speaker 4: or what was in my pantry, and it like full
- 9:03Speaker 4: spat out a recipe the instructions, you know, what additional
- 9:07Speaker 4: things I might need, and I replied a couple of
- 9:09Speaker 4: times being like, oh I don't have that, and they
- 9:11Speaker 4: were like substitute for this, and I was like, great,
- 9:13Speaker 4: that's also in my pantry.
- 9:15Speaker 5: Sligh. Really cool what you can do with AI nowadays,
- 9:18Speaker 5: and awesome that you can use free platforms. I know
- 9:21Speaker 5: that some of the chat GPT and you have to
- 9:22Speaker 5: pay for the Microsoft one's free chat GPT might have
- 9:25Speaker 5: a free element, but it's free tools that you can
- 9:28Speaker 5: use to save yourself money, which is sick.
- 9:29Speaker 4: And it's kind of like I have explained it to
- 9:33Speaker 4: a couple of friends who are.
- 9:34Speaker 2: Like, oh, I just don't know if it'll work or not.
- 9:36Speaker 4: I'm like, think of it as an unpaid intern that's
- 9:40Speaker 4: just started and knows nothing about the process. So like
- 9:43Speaker 4: feed it the information, like, okay, Beck, today, I want
- 9:47Speaker 4: you to create me a recipe and it needs to
- 9:49Speaker 4: be a recipe using only items in my pantry, and
- 9:53Speaker 4: I have like you kind of have to spoon feed it.
- 9:55Speaker 4: And that's okay, But I think some people jump on
- 9:58Speaker 4: to these things like copiloting.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Oh it didn't work.
- 10:00Speaker 4: I asked for a recipe and it like spat out,
- 10:02Speaker 4: you know, three random things. I'm like, oh no, this
- 10:05Speaker 4: is an unpaid intern who's never had a job before,
- 10:08Speaker 4: doesn't know how to do anything.
- 10:09Speaker 2: You need to spoon feed them.
- 10:11Speaker 4: And then you can tweak so like it comes back
- 10:13Speaker 4: with something in the recipe that you don't want or
- 10:15Speaker 4: you don't have. You can go back and be like,
- 10:16Speaker 4: please regenerate this response, but exclude the cream because I
- 10:20Speaker 4: don't need it, and then it will literally do it
- 10:22Speaker 4: again or go oh, have you got a more budget
- 10:25Speaker 4: friendly option for the sake that you recommended?
- 10:28Speaker 2: And I think that's it. It's just fun, really cool.
- 10:30Speaker 4: It's like an ongoing conversation and you don't have to
- 10:33Speaker 4: keep saying sorry for asking so many questions because they're ai.
- 10:36Speaker 7: Yeah, for their job, pressure to be like thank you
- 10:39Speaker 7: so much and oh no pressure.
- 10:40Speaker 6: You don't have to answer this.
- 10:41Speaker 5: It was really find when the microsoft to instinctively say
- 10:45Speaker 5: please and thank you, but.
- 10:47Speaker 4: I did anyway, and Jess was like, why are you
- 10:49Speaker 4: introducing yourself? And I was like, hello, I am trying
- 10:54Speaker 4: to make dinner tonight, just like I don't think they
- 10:56Speaker 4: care about.
- 10:57Speaker 2: Your and how are you like? Sit down? I look
- 11:00Speaker 2: at this recipe. Its lips so good.
- 11:02Speaker 5: Next, I've got a money win from Olivia who said
- 11:04Speaker 5: I found this on a local by swap and sell
- 11:06Speaker 5: group for my daughter. It was thirty dollars and it
- 11:08Speaker 5: still had the tags on it for two hundred and seventy.
- 11:12Speaker 2: Is this the jacket?
- 11:12Speaker 5: The jacket jacket?
- 11:15Speaker 2: Cool Juli down to thirty love a bus. That's a
- 11:18Speaker 2: money win.
- 11:18Speaker 5: That is a money win. Next, I've got one from
- 11:21Speaker 5: Sophie who said money win. I started a new job
- 11:23Speaker 5: in August and I haven't even passed my probation yet
- 11:26Speaker 5: and I just found out I got a five percent
- 11:28Speaker 5: salary increase money win effective first of January. Happy new
- 11:32Speaker 5: year to me, huge.
- 11:34Speaker 2: Congrats, congrats.
- 11:35Speaker 4: Then I like that it's effective first of January because
- 11:37Speaker 4: that means some backpay guys.
- 11:39Speaker 5: Yeah, I love a bit of back pay. Then I've
- 11:41Speaker 5: got a win from Victoria excellent name who said, Victoria,
- 11:45Speaker 5: I was going to buy your book as I just
- 11:47Speaker 5: had an offer on a property excepted thanks to Queen
- 11:51Speaker 5: Nikki Atsella. And my money win is that it was
- 11:53Speaker 5: actually free included in my Spotify subscriptions. And she was
- 11:58Speaker 5: very kind and she said, v I hope you get
- 11:59Speaker 5: royalties otherwise I will buy it.
- 12:01Speaker 4: I don't actually know how it works, but I'd much
- 12:02Speaker 4: prefer you to just read my book then pay me,
- 12:04Speaker 4: to be honest. And if you get the free audio
- 12:07Speaker 4: book like slag I heard someone real cool Reddit.
- 12:11Speaker 5: Yeah, so if you want to pay a forward share
- 12:12Speaker 5: of screenshot on stories, we'll tell your friends about it exactly.
- 12:15Speaker 5: That is just as helpful. Save yourself those dollars.
- 12:17Speaker 2: Queen, Yes, save the money.
- 12:19Speaker 4: Put it towards your house because in this economy, I'm
- 12:21Speaker 4: really sorry, I gonna need it.
- 12:24Speaker 5: Congratulations though, that is so exciting. Victoria out. Next, I've
- 12:27Speaker 5: got money in from Alyssa, who said money win. I
- 12:30Speaker 5: asked both my parents' households just before Christmas if we
- 12:33Speaker 5: could have their bottles and cans for Victoria's new deposits
- 12:36Speaker 5: scheme they collected them over the past month or so
- 12:39Speaker 5: alongside ours, and we cashed them in yesterday and we
- 12:41Speaker 5: got thirty seven dollars for them. Just hours alone came
- 12:44Speaker 5: to three bucks. So it paid to ask others who
- 12:46Speaker 5: were just going to throw them out anyway.
- 12:48Speaker 2: Money win. Jess what happens when you leave my house?
- 12:51Speaker 5: I take every can that I can find. Victoria says,
- 12:53Speaker 5: I have a present for you, and it's a bag
- 12:54Speaker 5: full of cans.
- 12:56Speaker 4: Save bottles and like coke bottles and stuff. I've been
- 12:59Speaker 4: keeping it in thettom of my pantry and I'm.
- 13:01Speaker 2: Like, I've got this for you.
- 13:02Speaker 5: Best present. That's lucky, very fun. And then lastly, I've
- 13:06Speaker 5: got a money in from Casey who said money win.
- 13:08Speaker 5: I needed some extra cash for my wedding and I
- 13:10Speaker 5: was making these crayon names for my nieces as a
- 13:12Speaker 5: part of their Flower Girls gift. I ended up having
- 13:15Speaker 5: a bunch of leftover crayons, and I reached out to
- 13:17Speaker 5: our neighborhood group and I made sixty two dollars selling them.
- 13:20Speaker 5: So far.
- 13:21Speaker 2: Crayons cool like crayon name.
- 13:25Speaker 4: Yeah, this is a.
- 13:27Speaker 5: Really fun activity with your kids. If you have like
- 13:29Speaker 5: broken crayons or if you buy. You can buy them
- 13:31Speaker 5: at the shop often, you know, the just mixed up
- 13:34Speaker 5: ones that have been donated and you melt them and
- 13:37Speaker 5: then you pour them into chocolate malts and then you
- 13:39Speaker 5: have all of these fun letters. That cool. They're like
- 13:42Speaker 5: usable crayons, but they're really beautiful gifts as well.
- 13:45Speaker 4: That's actually really cool and also just reminds me why
- 13:48Speaker 4: I have already nominated before my baby's.
- 13:50Speaker 2: Born that Jess is craft aren't.
- 13:52Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, I will happily teaste.
- 13:54Speaker 2: A bonnet you need one. I won't be making it
- 13:57Speaker 2: so fus.
- 13:59Speaker 5: My friend is a teacher actually did make her lip
- 14:03Speaker 5: quite literally. It had lights that switched on.
- 14:06Speaker 4: My kid is going to be the coolest kid ever,
- 14:09Speaker 4: and I'm going to be like it was.
- 14:10Speaker 2: Yes, I'm very excited.
- 14:12Speaker 5: That's all for me this week.
- 14:12Speaker 6: Guys.
- 14:13Speaker 4: All right, Beck, what have you got when it comes
- 14:15Speaker 4: to broke tips? These better be good? My expectations. Thank
- 14:20Speaker 4: you's been hyping them up and gatekeeping them, so they
- 14:23Speaker 4: better be good.
- 14:24Speaker 7: I do hype them up, and then when we get
- 14:26Speaker 7: around to it, I mean, like the community ones are
- 14:29Speaker 7: always good and my ones always just so funny and silly.
- 14:31Speaker 7: But I think this one this week is actually going
- 14:33Speaker 7: to be kind of good.
- 14:34Speaker 5: I'm excited.
- 14:34Speaker 7: Okay, So the first one comes from Georgie, who says
- 14:38Speaker 7: that Target right now has heaps of stuff on sale
- 14:40Speaker 7: because it's merging with km Art.
- 14:42Speaker 6: I didn't realize that was a thing. Did you guys
- 14:43Speaker 6: do that was a thing.
- 14:44Speaker 5: Yes, I've seen it on social media, not fully, I
- 14:48Speaker 5: don't think. But they're replacing a lot of the home
- 14:49Speaker 5: weares with the Kmart Homeworks brand. There's been a lot
- 14:51Speaker 5: of outrage. Yeah, because people love Target home weares.
- 14:55Speaker 2: I love Target home Wear.
- 14:56Speaker 5: But I saw someone say it was like seventy percent
- 14:58Speaker 5: off a lot of the time.
- 15:00Speaker 4: I saw a couple of tiktoks actually where a lot
- 15:02Speaker 4: of things were like marked down to two dollars.
- 15:05Speaker 2: Like this girl got a whole suit.
- 15:07Speaker 4: It was like pants, the vest, and the jacket for
- 15:09Speaker 4: six dollars in total.
- 15:11Speaker 6: Wow, like it almost it's just too silly.
- 15:15Speaker 4: I think it's wild. But they're actually clearing a lot
- 15:18Speaker 4: of stock. Insider info.
- 15:20Speaker 2: Don't ask me where I got this from Georgie.
- 15:23Speaker 4: Yeah, maybe from Georgia. Let's call it from Georgie. They
- 15:27Speaker 4: aren't just replacing all of Target's stuff with Kmart stuff
- 15:31Speaker 4: they have merged. They actually were always owned by the
- 15:34Speaker 4: same people, which is West Farmers Group, or own both CAMA
- 15:37Speaker 4: and Target, or you might be surprised to hear that
- 15:39Speaker 4: they also own like office works and Bunnings and.
- 15:42Speaker 5: Stuff like that.
- 15:43Speaker 2: They actually are a very very large organization.
- 15:45Speaker 4: But they are taking a lot of the product lines
- 15:49Speaker 4: that don't sell as well in Target and replacing them
- 15:52Speaker 4: with Kmart because it does. There might be different products
- 15:56Speaker 4: across the stores, but obviously they've got their factories that Ancho,
- 16:00Speaker 4: so they're.
- 16:01Speaker 2: Bringing that in.
- 16:02Speaker 4: But surely they are keeping a lot of the main
- 16:04Speaker 4: product lines that sell really well. Because I was really worried,
- 16:07Speaker 4: honestly about the baby onesies because like.
- 16:11Speaker 2: Cute onesies, organic cotton.
- 16:13Speaker 4: I can't find anything nicer than that that feels as
- 16:16Speaker 4: good at that price point. And I was like, don't
- 16:18Speaker 4: take them away, They're not going to Sorry, amazing, It's
- 16:21Speaker 4: not everything, like Targets are not becoming kmarts, But I
- 16:25Speaker 4: feel like a lot of people have just assumed because
- 16:27Speaker 4: it does look like.
- 16:28Speaker 5: That, Yeah, just three targets trying to find some bargains
- 16:31Speaker 5: that already been cleaned out.
- 16:34Speaker 6: Well, try and try again, they.
- 16:37Speaker 5: Say, for a two dollars suit.
- 16:39Speaker 2: I'll try.
- 16:39Speaker 5: I am one that is so silly.
- 16:43Speaker 6: I love it.
- 16:43Speaker 7: But yeah, like maybe go to like you know, country
- 16:45Speaker 7: towns and stuff. I feel like those targets.
- 16:47Speaker 2: Yeah, probably don't go to like the Chadston.
- 16:49Speaker 6: They don't go to Chadston, go anywhere else.
- 16:51Speaker 2: They've been cleaned up.
- 16:53Speaker 7: Okay, So this next one comes from Indy, who says
- 16:55Speaker 7: that if you live near a UNI, make the most
- 16:57Speaker 7: of the free food at O week which is coming
- 16:59Speaker 7: up soon.
- 16:59Speaker 5: Which a great idea.
- 17:01Speaker 2: It's actually very smart.
- 17:02Speaker 7: Yes, totally, Like, even if you don't live near a UNI,
- 17:05Speaker 7: if you're like gonna get free food, just make for you're.
- 17:07Speaker 2: Like, go to UNI, even though you're not gonna go
- 17:09Speaker 2: to UNI.
- 17:10Speaker 6: Yeah, like you don't have to be going to UNI
- 17:12Speaker 6: to be getting that free food. I imagine I.
- 17:13Speaker 2: Would feel very But I mean, here, do you all
- 17:17Speaker 2: right that?
- 17:17Speaker 5: I think that's smart?
- 17:18Speaker 6: I think it's smart.
- 17:19Speaker 7: And what if you just want to go there for
- 17:20Speaker 7: info you also get a free food.
- 17:22Speaker 6: Great idea, Indie, thank you so much.
- 17:25Speaker 5: That is fan.
- 17:26Speaker 6: I might even do that. We make a David.
- 17:28Speaker 7: Okay, So mine comes from I don't know if you
- 17:31Speaker 7: guys have heard of this god named Viv.
- 17:33Speaker 6: Her Instagram handle is viv loves to Eat.
- 17:36Speaker 7: She shared a post about this is the name of
- 17:39Speaker 7: the cafe five bucks schmuck in Thornberry.
- 17:42Speaker 2: That sounds fun it is. There's no catch.
- 17:44Speaker 7: There is a menu that is dedicated to items slash
- 17:47Speaker 7: meals that costs five dollars.
- 17:48Speaker 6: Literally what And she.
- 17:49Speaker 4: Posted this video in this economy, In this economy, it
- 17:52Speaker 4: can't be making any money.
- 17:53Speaker 7: Well, this is why I say no catch, because, like
- 17:56Speaker 7: she posted in the actual like you know caption, that
- 17:59Speaker 7: the owner just wants to do something nice to the community.
- 18:01Speaker 2: Oh what a wholesome which is really really so.
- 18:03Speaker 7: I don't think that the whole menu is five dollars,
- 18:05Speaker 7: but it's a dedicated, you know thing that that's cool.
- 18:08Speaker 7: You can get like you know, a roll or a
- 18:11Speaker 7: croissant or something like that. That's you know, it's not
- 18:14Speaker 7: they're not losing money, you can tell, but it's still
- 18:16Speaker 7: like they could be charging you way more, but you're
- 18:18Speaker 7: still getting a good feed out of it.
- 18:19Speaker 2: I paid nine dollars for alm and croissan on the other.
- 18:21Speaker 5: Day daylight robbery.
- 18:23Speaker 6: That's my one.
- 18:23Speaker 7: There's probably an adjacent or an equivalent in your state,
- 18:27Speaker 7: your city, your suburb, if you're in Melbourne, just maybe.
- 18:31Speaker 2: Please share it with the sheese on the money community
- 18:33Speaker 2: if these because we gonna need it.
- 18:35Speaker 6: Yeah, yes absolutely, but for now five bucks, monks.
- 18:38Speaker 4: I cannot think for the last time a meal cost
- 18:40Speaker 4: me five dollars out Yeah, same.
- 18:43Speaker 6: Maybe penny pinchers of magas.
- 18:45Speaker 2: Even then, I've always like, can I please have a large?
- 18:47Speaker 3: Go eight dollars?
- 18:50Speaker 5: Still I ordered a happy meal the other day and
- 18:52Speaker 5: it was always the same price as a normal meal.
- 18:55Speaker 2: Shocked, it is actually a small cheeseburger meal.
- 18:58Speaker 6: Yeah, you look like a happy meal order.
- 19:00Speaker 2: I know happy meals.
- 19:02Speaker 4: If I'm coming in and I'm like, do you want
- 19:04Speaker 4: lunch and she's like yeah, I don't know anything, will
- 19:06Speaker 4: do Like I guarantee I'll walk in with a happy
- 19:08Speaker 4: fast for the toy not the book, by the way. No,
- 19:14Speaker 4: all right, let's go to a really quick break on
- 19:16Speaker 4: the flip side. We're going to be talking about investing
- 19:18Speaker 4: in commercial or residential properties as your first investment, and
- 19:23Speaker 4: we're going to unpack something that you slid into our
- 19:25Speaker 4: DMS about this week.
- 19:27Speaker 2: We're talking about helping a friend.
- 19:28Speaker 4: Pay for their mental health support. So don't go anywhere, guys.
- 19:37Speaker 5: Welcome back everybody. Let's take a listen to this week's
- 19:39Speaker 5: money dilemma.
- 19:43Speaker 8: Hi, there, have you got a money dilemma you just

- 19:59Speaker 4: your on the show. Now, let's take a listen to
- 20:02Speaker 4: this week's money dilemma.
- 20:06Speaker 9: Hi, ladies, I have a cauerer. I'd like your advice on.
- 20:10Speaker 9: My partner and I are in our earliest to mid
- 20:12Speaker 9: twenties and have decided we'd like to start saving up
- 20:15Speaker 9: for an investment property. My partner has heard that commercial
- 20:18Speaker 9: properties can produce a higher return than residential and I'm
- 20:22Speaker 9: monitoring what would be the best option for us to
- 20:24Speaker 9: buy as a first time buyer, considering their more grants
- 20:27Speaker 9: available for residential properties versus commercial, and what I can
- 20:31Speaker 9: see online and any other factors we need to consider
- 20:34Speaker 9: when comparing the two and saving up for the deposit.
- 20:37Speaker 9: Thank you, I.
- 20:38Speaker 4: Have a lot of thoughts about first properties, and you
- 20:41Speaker 4: are correct if you looked at the rental yield of
- 20:44Speaker 4: a residential property versus a commercial property. More often than not,
- 20:49Speaker 4: commercial property has a higher rental yield.
- 20:52Speaker 2: The problem there is.
- 20:54Speaker 4: That if you are chasing yield, that is usually going
- 20:58Speaker 4: to come at a higher cost.
- 20:59Speaker 1: Right.
- 21:00Speaker 4: So let's just pretend you're spending five hundred thousand dollars
- 21:03Speaker 4: on your first two bedroom apartment to get a comparable
- 21:07Speaker 4: rental yield in a commercial property, you're probably looking closer
- 21:10Speaker 4: to a million dollars worth of investment. We also really
- 21:13Speaker 4: need to talk about the risk that is involved with
- 21:16Speaker 4: investing in commercial versus residential property, and that is usually
- 21:20Speaker 4: how long that property is left vacant and you are
- 21:24Speaker 4: up for that mortgage without any kind of you know,
- 21:26Speaker 4: help from a tenant.
- 21:28Speaker 1: Right.
- 21:28Speaker 4: So in Melbourne we know that rental tendancy sucks at
- 21:32Speaker 4: the moment. Like if you've got an apartment and it
- 21:35Speaker 4: is up for rent, you are in a prime position
- 21:37Speaker 4: because there are a lot of people who want properties
- 21:40Speaker 4: and there aren't enough properties to go around. So your
- 21:43Speaker 4: rental vacancy rate could be like one or two percent
- 21:46Speaker 4: per annam, which means like there aren't that many days
- 21:49Speaker 4: per year that you don't have rent coming in the door.
- 21:52Speaker 4: Whereas when you look at commercial property, they tend to
- 21:55Speaker 4: stay vacant for a longer period of time. Yes, you
- 21:59Speaker 4: might have longer li periods. So typically if you're signing
- 22:03Speaker 4: onto a commercial lease, it's not just like a one
- 22:05Speaker 4: year lease.
- 22:06Speaker 2: It might be a minimum of five years.
- 22:07Speaker 4: It could be ten, twenty, or even thirty years as
- 22:10Speaker 4: a lease. And that's all well and good and fine,
- 22:13Speaker 4: but the vacancy rate can be significantly higher because you know,
- 22:18Speaker 4: it's obviously harder to find somebody who wants your specific
- 22:21Speaker 4: space in your specific area to run their business. So
- 22:25Speaker 4: you might even end up with a vacancy rate of
- 22:27Speaker 4: like six months or fifty percent of the year it
- 22:30Speaker 4: is not rented out. And so you've got a factor
- 22:33Speaker 4: all of that in. Yes, when it comes to residential property,
- 22:38Speaker 4: you have a lot more grants and offers because the
- 22:40Speaker 4: government's kind of like, well, if you're buying commercial you
- 22:43Speaker 4: probably you know a bit of a well seasoned investor. However,
- 22:47Speaker 4: it's definitely worth looking at the pros and cons of
- 22:49Speaker 4: each not just like, oh, they have better returns, like
- 22:52Speaker 4: you are correct, but we don't chase returns. What we
- 22:55Speaker 4: want to chase is consistency and does this align to
- 22:57Speaker 4: your goals and values? Does this help you in any way,
- 23:00Speaker 4: shape or form to reach your next financial goal?
- 23:03Speaker 2: What does equity in the property look like?
- 23:06Speaker 4: We know in the Melbourne residential market, equity has somewhat
- 23:10Speaker 4: increased for people. I feel like the property market has
- 23:13Speaker 4: kind of like stagnated, given we went through COVID and
- 23:16Speaker 4: now we're going through a cost of living crisis. But
- 23:19Speaker 4: the probability is that the asset is probably going to
- 23:22Speaker 4: increase in value, Whereas if you went and bought a
- 23:24Speaker 4: factory please don't get me wrong, not a terrible investment,
- 23:27Speaker 4: but the capital growth on those properties is usually not
- 23:31Speaker 4: as high as a residential property in the same area
- 23:34Speaker 4: because it can't be rezoned to residential if you change
- 23:38Speaker 4: your mind, like it will always have to be a
- 23:40Speaker 4: commercial property. So I think when it comes to you
- 23:43Speaker 4: know what you should and shouldn't do, there's no right
- 23:46Speaker 4: or wrong, Like if you're in the position where you're
- 23:47Speaker 4: like I actually want to buy a factory v I've
- 23:49Speaker 4: looked at all of the stats, the areas up and coming.
- 23:52Speaker 4: I have had a number of past clients and even
- 23:55Speaker 4: friends purchase factories, especially in like you know those kinds
- 24:00Speaker 4: of like big development areas. They're a little bit like
- 24:02Speaker 4: commercial but they are completely bare and then they rent
- 24:06Speaker 4: them out. And you're right, they do have really good
- 24:08Speaker 4: rental yield. However, they don't have a lot of good
- 24:11Speaker 4: capital growth on those from what.
- 24:13Speaker 2: I have seen.
- 24:14Speaker 4: Doesn't mean you shouldn't do it, absolutely not like it
- 24:16Speaker 4: might really align to your goals, like you might actually
- 24:19Speaker 4: go gin. I don't want to deal with everyday tenants.
- 24:22Speaker 4: I want to strip this out completely and make all
- 24:25Speaker 4: of this, you know, my new tenants problem to furnish
- 24:28Speaker 4: and upkeep and maintain. So it really depends. But what
- 24:31Speaker 4: I would say is to me, it is a bit
- 24:34Speaker 4: of a red flag if the reason you want to
- 24:36Speaker 4: go with them is because you've heard they have higher
- 24:38Speaker 4: rental yield without actually looking at well, what would this
- 24:41Speaker 4: look like in ten, twenty thirty years, Because a mortgage,
- 24:44Speaker 4: as we all know, is a long term commitment. And
- 24:47Speaker 4: then I guess on top of that, you're not looking
- 24:49Speaker 4: at a residential home loan either, you're looking at a
- 24:53Speaker 4: commercial loan, and they have different things that you need
- 24:55Speaker 4: to take into consideration. So talk to a broker before
- 24:59Speaker 4: you make a decision, is what I would say.
- 25:01Speaker 7: Yeah, I imagine like, and this is obviously not coming
- 25:03Speaker 7: from an expert opinion, but I imagine that the cost
- 25:06Speaker 7: of upkeep, like you know, like getting a trade out
- 25:09Speaker 7: to fix like a block toilet, wouldn't cost as much
- 25:12Speaker 7: as a potential something in a whole factory.
- 25:16Speaker 6: You know what I mean.
- 25:17Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 25:17Speaker 4: Well, in a factory, it's actually on the tenant, so
- 25:20Speaker 4: I happens, Yeah, it's on the tenant, and the tenant
- 25:25Speaker 4: will usually pay for complete fit out as well, So
- 25:28Speaker 4: like you would lease them your completely bare factory, but
- 25:32Speaker 4: you don't have as much responsibility as a residential landlord.
- 25:36Speaker 2: You go that that's your problem.
- 25:38Speaker 4: You know, if you want stairs put in over here,
- 25:40Speaker 4: or you want you know, an office built in here,
- 25:44Speaker 4: that's on you. But given it is actually a little
- 25:47Speaker 4: bit more difficult to attract tenants to commercial properties, what
- 25:50Speaker 4: you often have to do is also incentivize it.
- 25:53Speaker 2: And I've signed a number of leases. I've never owned.
- 25:55Speaker 4: Commercial property, I've always leased it, and I've signed a
- 25:58Speaker 4: number of commercial property tendency agreements, and often I'll ask
- 26:03Speaker 4: for incentives upfront.
- 26:04Speaker 2: Like, Jess, you probably remember this.
- 26:05Speaker 4: When I was signing our last office, I was like, well,
- 26:07Speaker 4: how many months at the start can I get free?
- 26:09Speaker 4: What are the bonuses can I get? Like, you know,
- 26:11Speaker 4: there's a fit out there, can I have that? Or
- 26:13Speaker 4: you know, do I have to buy my own? If
- 26:15Speaker 4: I have to buy my own fit out, I've estimated
- 26:17Speaker 4: that that's going to cost me fifty thousand dollars, So like,
- 26:20Speaker 4: how are you going to incentivize me to rent your
- 26:23Speaker 4: property over somebody else's. So normally they offer this by
- 26:28Speaker 4: offering a couple of months of free rent, and it
- 26:30Speaker 4: will clearly depend on like the value of the commercial
- 26:33Speaker 4: property as well. But like it's a different ballgame completely,
- 26:36Speaker 4: But most of the I guess costs actually fall into
- 26:41Speaker 4: the tenants wheelhouse when it comes.
- 26:43Speaker 2: To commercial versus residential. Whereas you know, we've.
- 26:45Speaker 4: Spoken a lot about Jess going through, Oh the ceiling's leaking.
- 26:49Speaker 4: If I was commercial, I'd be like, well, Jess, go
- 26:52Speaker 4: and fix the ceiling.
- 26:53Speaker 5: Then hey, sound a lot like are your problem?
- 26:55Speaker 2: I was like, a just to get a problem.
- 26:57Speaker 5: Yeah, if you look at pretty that much out, maybe
- 26:59Speaker 5: it might be worth chatting to a financial advisor. Would
- 27:01Speaker 5: be the only thing that I have to contribute there
- 27:03Speaker 5: if you're putting that much into ane, like I.
- 27:05Speaker 2: Talked a lot as well. Sorry, I don't be sorry.
- 27:07Speaker 2: Do you want to talk about the ass by CDM?
- 27:09Speaker 1: Yes?
- 27:09Speaker 5: Weeks?
- 27:10Speaker 1: All right?
- 27:11Speaker 2: So this week we got a DM and it sounded
- 27:12Speaker 2: like this.
- 27:13Speaker 4: Actually the batim it was this message, are you ready ready,
- 27:16Speaker 4: high team, I've got a DM for you.
- 27:18Speaker 2: Really.
- 27:19Speaker 4: A close friend of mine has been really struggling with
- 27:22Speaker 4: her mental health, so I suggested she looked into getting
- 27:25Speaker 4: some help and seeing a psychologist. She said she can't
- 27:28Speaker 4: afford it at the moment, so I offered to pay
- 27:30Speaker 4: you for some sessions, as I wanted to help her
- 27:32Speaker 4: in any.
- 27:33Speaker 2: Way I could.
- 27:34Speaker 4: I've currently paid for her first three appointments, which were
- 27:37Speaker 4: around ninety dollars each.
- 27:39Speaker 2: Now here's the issue.
- 27:41Speaker 4: I just found out she spent four hundred dollars on
- 27:44Speaker 4: drugs for a festival she was going to, and I'm
- 27:46Speaker 4: really upset by this. I was more than happy to
- 27:49Speaker 4: help her out.
- 27:50Speaker 2: But if she can afford.
- 27:51Speaker 4: Drugs, then she can afford to pay to see the psychologist.
- 27:54Speaker 4: How do I go about asking for my money back
- 27:56Speaker 4: but also ensuring she continues to get the help that
- 27:59Speaker 4: she needs. I'm really not sure what to do. Any
- 28:02Speaker 4: help is really appreciated.
- 28:04Speaker 5: Before we get into it, I feel like we have
- 28:06Speaker 5: to say we're gonna be discussing the drug use. We
- 28:09Speaker 5: do not condone or encourage the use of recreational drugs,
- 28:13Speaker 5: but it is a part of the story. We're gonna
- 28:15Speaker 5: chat about it.
- 28:16Speaker 4: Yeah, Like no judgment from me, Like it's a choice
- 28:18Speaker 4: somebody else has made and that's fine, but yeah, it's
- 28:21Speaker 4: not an endorsement.
- 28:22Speaker 5: Yeah, and if you do need any resources regarding something
- 28:24Speaker 5: like that, we will pop some links in the shows
- 28:26Speaker 5: that you can access and have look through. Obviously we're
- 28:29Speaker 5: a supportive safe space, but it's just something that we
- 28:32Speaker 5: have to say.
- 28:32Speaker 2: Yeah. Absolutely.
- 28:33Speaker 4: I also think it's relatively interchangeable as well. Like stepping
- 28:37Speaker 4: back before I actually start answering this question, like if
- 28:40Speaker 4: you've paid ninety dollars a session for your friend to
- 28:43Speaker 4: go get help on something, it could have been like
- 28:45Speaker 4: her going out to fancy restaurants and spending four hundred
- 28:49Speaker 4: bucks and I thought you said you had no money
- 28:52Speaker 4: for like recreational activities, or you know, they might have
- 28:55Speaker 4: decided to just go to a festival and spend four
- 28:57Speaker 4: hundred bucks on a ticket and you were like hold on,
- 28:59Speaker 4: like you say you didn't have fun. So I don't
- 29:02Speaker 4: think it's really they're quite drug use. Yes, obviously that's
- 29:05Speaker 4: not ideal because I'm pretty sure that that drug use
- 29:08Speaker 4: is probably playing into the need for the mental health care.
- 29:11Speaker 2: And that's absolutely fine.
- 29:13Speaker 4: But I think I'd be equally as frustrated if, you know,
- 29:16Speaker 4: I helped out a friend and found out they're just
- 29:18Speaker 4: blowing four hundred dollars a week on going.
- 29:20Speaker 2: To the club.
- 29:21Speaker 4: Like irrespective, but moving forward, what do you guys think?
- 29:26Speaker 7: I think like if I was maybe I don't know,
- 29:31Speaker 7: if my friend was like saving up for a festival
- 29:33Speaker 7: and that I guess, like, you don't really just blow that,
- 29:37Speaker 7: Like that's kind of something that you prepare for ahead
- 29:40Speaker 7: of time, paying for like sarch sessions and stuff like that.
- 29:43Speaker 7: I'm going to like mentally put that in a different
- 29:46Speaker 7: category and say that the actual spending of that much
- 29:49Speaker 7: money on whatever it could have been, we just don't know,
- 29:53Speaker 7: like it could have been something that she had really
- 29:55Speaker 7: saved for and was looking forward to. It sounds like
- 29:58Speaker 7: something that's a something that happens like once a year,
- 30:01Speaker 7: like we've all you know, like Meredith for example, Like
- 30:03Speaker 7: I if I was saving up for that and my
- 30:06Speaker 7: friend was like, hey, I need you to go see
- 30:07Speaker 7: a PSICH, I'd.
- 30:08Speaker 6: Be like, I actually don't have capacity right now because.
- 30:11Speaker 7: I'm saving up for Meredith, which I know is like
- 30:14Speaker 7: not it should absolutely should not be the priority here.
- 30:17Speaker 7: My own mental health, my own mental well being should be.
- 30:21Speaker 7: But if that's kind of what I need just to
- 30:24Speaker 7: stay sane, like prioritizing my social life, and someone else
- 30:29Speaker 7: aside from that, offered to pay for a few SICH sessions,
- 30:33Speaker 7: then I guess I guess like it was all about transparency.
- 30:37Speaker 7: If you're like, hey, this is actually what I'm spending
- 30:38Speaker 7: my money on, this is what I'm saving up for,
- 30:40Speaker 7: this is everything that I'm planning on buying. If you're
- 30:43Speaker 7: still comfortable paying for these, cool, if not cool, But yeah,
- 30:47Speaker 7: I guess like the transparency maybe is my main thing.
- 30:50Speaker 7: I don't know if that's the same for you guys.
- 30:52Speaker 7: But you sound like a great friend, and you you know,
- 30:56Speaker 7: you sound you'd serve a very good friend in return.
- 30:59Speaker 5: Yeah, I agree. I think that you've done a really kind,
- 31:02Speaker 5: generous thing. You obviously care about your friend, you want
- 31:04Speaker 5: to put them first. I understand what you mean about, like,
- 31:08Speaker 5: someone may choose to prioritize something else over their mental health,
- 31:11Speaker 5: and that is their prerogative. I think for me, the
- 31:14Speaker 5: fact that it is drugs is kind of a little
- 31:17Speaker 5: bit of an additional layer of gray. I think it's
- 31:21Speaker 5: very different from saving to go to a festival, or
- 31:23Speaker 5: saving to go to an event, or maybe saving for
- 31:25Speaker 5: a trip versus something you know, if you blow it
- 31:27Speaker 5: on alcohol or something similar. I still mentally categorize those
- 31:32Speaker 5: into two different things. Again, sure, I think the unfortunate
- 31:35Speaker 5: thing is though I don't know that you can ask
- 31:38Speaker 5: for the money back. I think I'm on that page too.
- 31:40Speaker 5: I think a gift is a gift, and as much
- 31:44Speaker 5: as you know when you gave her that gift, you
- 31:47Speaker 5: were helping her out within you know, a certain framework
- 31:50Speaker 5: that you thought existed. I don't think that you can ask.
- 31:55Speaker 5: I firstly, don't know that it would come back to you.
- 31:56Speaker 5: It sounds like she's pretty struck for cash, and it
- 31:58Speaker 5: might just put an even bigger rift between the two
- 32:01Speaker 5: of you. I think I would probably go down the
- 32:04Speaker 5: route of just explaining to her how you feel and
- 32:06Speaker 5: saying hey, like I wanted you to put yourself first.
- 32:09Speaker 5: I thought that you didn't have any money.
- 32:11Speaker 1: You know.
- 32:12Speaker 5: Having seen you behave this way or do these things
- 32:15Speaker 5: has really made me feel like you value your money
- 32:18Speaker 5: over mine, or you know, something like that, and explaining
- 32:21Speaker 5: to her. Maybe she doesn't see it from that perspective,
- 32:23Speaker 5: but in terms of getting it back, I don't know
- 32:25Speaker 5: that you will. And it's hard. When you love someone,
- 32:28Speaker 5: you want to support them, you want to resource them,
- 32:30Speaker 5: you want to do it whatever you can to make
- 32:32Speaker 5: sure that they're well off. And I know that it
- 32:35Speaker 5: might go against your instinct, but I think my advice
- 32:39Speaker 5: would be to probably not do it again, maybe try
- 32:41Speaker 5: to find other ways to help resource her. I know
- 32:44Speaker 5: that there's you know, the mental health plans in Australia.
- 32:47Speaker 5: I don't know whether or not she qualifies for those,
- 32:49Speaker 5: but looking into that, looking into you know, some of
- 32:52Speaker 5: the hotlines that have access to resources and things of
- 32:55Speaker 5: that nature, things that you can do to help her
- 32:58Speaker 5: without necessarily taking money out of your own pocket. Because
- 33:01Speaker 5: it sounds like you guys aren't valuing her mental health
- 33:05Speaker 5: or those psychology appointments in the same way. Yeah, what
- 33:09Speaker 5: do you think they do?
- 33:10Speaker 4: I feel like I have been the friend that has
- 33:13Speaker 4: wanted to do this before. I can't say I've paid
- 33:16Speaker 4: for someone's psych appointments, but I definitely have given money
- 33:20Speaker 4: to friends or people I know in the hope that
- 33:24Speaker 4: it fixes them or changes them. And this is just
- 33:27Speaker 4: in hindsight. I'm not thinking that in the moment, just
- 33:30Speaker 4: trying to be generous and like look after them. However,
- 33:34Speaker 4: in I guess retrospect, when you look back on that,
- 33:37Speaker 4: I feel like when you do that, you're kind of
- 33:40Speaker 4: tunnel visioned. You're not going, oh, this is gonna you know,
- 33:44Speaker 4: actually have to play into their value system and their
- 33:48Speaker 4: priorities and where they're at mentally. I kind of go, well,
- 33:51Speaker 4: if I pay for your sych sessions, that'll help you
- 33:53Speaker 4: get better, full stop, end of story. And I think
- 33:56Speaker 4: that you know, when you probably offered, you didn't put
- 33:59Speaker 4: a lot of pros around this gift. You would have maybe,
- 34:02Speaker 4: and I'm assuming that you are the same type of
- 34:05Speaker 4: person as me, and I would love to think that
- 34:07Speaker 4: it's because I'm empathetic and generous and if I've got
- 34:10Speaker 4: the means, like, I want to help, So you might
- 34:13Speaker 4: have just been like, look, you know, Jess, what if
- 34:16Speaker 4: you're saying you can't afford it, what if I pay
- 34:18Speaker 4: for that? I just really want you to be in
- 34:20Speaker 4: the best possible position, and Jess you go, oh, well,
- 34:22Speaker 4: actually that would be really kind because in the back
- 34:24Speaker 4: of your mind, just like just using just as an example,
- 34:27Speaker 4: in the back of your mind, you you really do
- 34:29Speaker 4: want to change, you do want to get better. But
- 34:32Speaker 4: the overarching thing is that ultimately your priority is are
- 34:35Speaker 4: not there yet. You might not be willing to get help,
- 34:38Speaker 4: You might not you know, have the drive to do that.
- 34:41Speaker 4: Even though that conversation was really motivating and it was
- 34:45Speaker 4: really nice, like how many times will we sat down
- 34:47Speaker 4: with ourselves, Like I remember even me going, look, I'm
- 34:49Speaker 4: just going to stop biting my nails, And then the
- 34:52Speaker 4: next week, I'm biting my nails and I'm like like,
- 34:55Speaker 4: and I had every intention of doing the right thing,
- 34:57Speaker 4: Like I bought the fancy nail polish I did, you know,
- 35:00Speaker 4: looked up on YouTube how to do a meditation about
- 35:02Speaker 4: not biting my nails, and like, you have all the
- 35:04Speaker 4: gung ho at the start, but maybe you fall off
- 35:07Speaker 4: the bandwagon because maybe you're just not ready for change.
- 35:09Speaker 4: Maybe you're not ready to you know, take on mental
- 35:13Speaker 4: health help. And I think that there's a lot to
- 35:16Speaker 4: say about that, because also it is really.
- 35:18Speaker 2: Hard to reach out for help.
- 35:20Speaker 4: Some people aren't ready for it, Like you only hear
- 35:23Speaker 4: what you want to hear in those sessions, and if
- 35:25Speaker 4: you're not open to it, it's action.
- 35:28Speaker 2: No, I won't say, a waste of.
- 35:29Speaker 4: Time, but it can be a bit of a waste
- 35:31Speaker 4: of your money if you're like, I'll go those sych sessions,
- 35:33Speaker 4: but I'm definitely not going to implement anything they do.
- 35:36Speaker 4: And like, you know, let's pretend that the and this
- 35:39Speaker 4: is a wild speculation, Let's pretend that your friend needs
- 35:42Speaker 4: psych help because they maybe have lost their way and
- 35:45Speaker 4: they are doing a lot of drugs and you thought
- 35:47Speaker 4: that you could sweep in and that would be like
- 35:49Speaker 4: the magical key that opens the world to a new
- 35:51Speaker 4: kingdom for them.
- 35:53Speaker 2: They're not ready for that.
- 35:54Speaker 4: And like maybe they're not ready to hear from a
- 35:56Speaker 4: psychologist and maybe they're even going to those sessions and
- 35:58Speaker 4: being like, yep.
- 36:00Speaker 2: I'm getting help. No worries. So, Meredith is next weekend,
- 36:03Speaker 2: I've got four hundred bucks in my account.
- 36:05Speaker 4: I'm just going to spend it on that because it
- 36:06Speaker 4: becomes a need, right so I think we need to
- 36:09Speaker 4: step back and look at the psychology behind. Well, why
- 36:11Speaker 4: did you want to do that? Like, obviously you wanted
- 36:14Speaker 4: to put your friend in the best possible position. But
- 36:17Speaker 4: by doing that, were you acknowledging whether your friend was
- 36:20Speaker 4: in the position to change yet or not, or were
- 36:22Speaker 4: you trying to push them down a path that maybe
- 36:25Speaker 4: they weren't ready to walk.
- 36:27Speaker 2: Does that make sense?
- 36:27Speaker 4: Because really I just look at it and I go, well,
- 36:30Speaker 4: if someone else is not ready for it, they might
- 36:32Speaker 4: be super motivated. And you know what, your friend probably
- 36:35Speaker 4: had the best of intentions when accepting your help. Like
- 36:38Speaker 4: how beautiful if I turned around said to bet you beck,
- 36:41Speaker 4: there's this thing that you need and you're telling me
- 36:43Speaker 4: you can't for I would love to make sure that
- 36:45Speaker 4: you get that.
- 36:46Speaker 2: You'd be like, oh theah you like that's so generous
- 36:48Speaker 2: and so kind. I would love to do that.
- 36:50Speaker 4: I don't think your friend ever set out to disrespect
- 36:53Speaker 4: you or the money that you have spent. I think
- 36:55Speaker 4: that clearly there's a lot going on here. But also
- 36:59Speaker 4: the second layer to question, how do I ask for
- 37:01Speaker 4: my money back?
- 37:02Speaker 2: I would say, you don't.
- 37:03Speaker 9: It was a gift.
- 37:04Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, it was a gift and you gave it
- 37:06Speaker 4: to them with no intention of saying actually, there are
- 37:10Speaker 4: some stipulations on this. If you cross a boundary ABCD,
- 37:13Speaker 4: E or F, I will be asking you for the
- 37:15Speaker 4: money back, because I can almost guarantee if I said, hey, Beck,
- 37:19Speaker 4: I'm willing to help get that thing, and you go, yeah, great,
- 37:21Speaker 4: great great, and I go.
- 37:22Speaker 2: But also if you do ab C or D, you'll
- 37:25Speaker 2: have to pay it back.
- 37:25Speaker 4: You go, oh, I can't commit to that, Yeah, because
- 37:28Speaker 4: maybe your friend wouldn't have let you do that in
- 37:30Speaker 4: that case, Does that make sense?
- 37:31Speaker 6: I sally agree.
- 37:32Speaker 5: There's like such a strongle or there can be such
- 37:34Speaker 5: a strong link between drug use and mental health too,
- 37:36Speaker 5: Like we don't really drug a context of whether it's
- 37:39Speaker 5: consistent usage or whether it's just oh I was at
- 37:41Speaker 5: a festival and that's what people would do, but we
- 37:43Speaker 5: don't really have.
- 37:44Speaker 2: We have NOD.
- 37:45Speaker 5: But if they are having ongoing mental health struggles, like
- 37:48Speaker 5: that could lean into why they chose to do that,
- 37:51Speaker 5: which again is just like an extra layer of complexity
- 37:53Speaker 5: that you're not really equipped to handle.
- 37:56Speaker 4: And also it doesn't make them a bad person. Yeah,
- 37:58Speaker 4: Like change is really hard, like human beings at a
- 38:03Speaker 4: base primal level. Do not like change because change is
- 38:07Speaker 4: risk and risk means I could be in trouble. So
- 38:11Speaker 4: you know, it's the devil you know versus the devil
- 38:13Speaker 4: you don't, right, So I think we need to acknowledge
- 38:16Speaker 4: that change is really hard, and it's hard, it's slow,
- 38:20Speaker 4: it's part of the process. I think that, you know,
- 38:22Speaker 4: there's actually a lot to this. I'm just so glad
- 38:25Speaker 4: that your friend was open to mental health, you know, help,
- 38:29Speaker 4: I think having a genuine conversation definitely not asking for
- 38:33Speaker 4: the money back, but going hey, Jess, can we have
- 38:36Speaker 4: a chat. I'm just feeling like it's a bit frustrating.
- 38:38Speaker 4: I really thought that you were going to get help
- 38:40Speaker 4: for X, Y and Z. You know, I'm even paying
- 38:43Speaker 4: for it, and then you spent four hundred bucks like
- 38:45Speaker 4: on something really discretionary and like you in it or
- 38:49Speaker 4: you're out of it, because like obviously it makes me
- 38:51Speaker 4: not want to pay for your sessions because you're not
- 38:54Speaker 4: learning anything, like nothing's happening, like what should we do?
- 38:57Speaker 4: And maybe your friend will actually go, oh my god,
- 39:00Speaker 4: I'm actually so embarrassed about this situation. Like it's one
- 39:04Speaker 4: of those sleeper it could be a really beautiful learning
- 39:06Speaker 4: experience for both of you.
- 39:07Speaker 7: Totally, and just to like add to that as well,
- 39:09Speaker 7: like I obviously don't have enough context here and what
- 39:12Speaker 7: your friend's going through, but in that moment, trying to
- 39:16Speaker 7: frame it as something that she shouldn't be ashamed of,
- 39:19Speaker 7: shouldn't be embarrassed about that kind of thing, because that
- 39:22Speaker 7: could really make someone spiral. Even myself as someone who
- 39:25Speaker 7: I wouldn't consider having any very serious mental health issues,
- 39:28Speaker 7: something like that would make me spiral into oblivion. So
- 39:32Speaker 7: I would say keep that in mind. Also, just trying
- 39:35Speaker 7: to find out best ways to support her moving forward
- 39:38Speaker 7: without like the financial support basically like physical and mental
- 39:43Speaker 7: emotional support. Trying to find the best way to I
- 39:46Speaker 7: guess like meet her needs without dishing out any more money.
- 39:49Speaker 2: Yeah, so we got heaps of responses on this.
- 39:54Speaker 4: A lot of them were saying, look, your money's gone,
- 39:57Speaker 4: you're not getting it back. It's whether you who's a
- 40:00Speaker 4: friend now too or not, which I thought was a
- 40:02Speaker 4: really good point.
- 40:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 40:04Speaker 4: A lot of people were saying, look, I just wouldn't
- 40:06Speaker 4: pay for any more sessions moving forward again, wouldn't ask
- 40:09Speaker 4: for the money back. A lot of people said, she
- 40:12Speaker 4: really needs to help herself. It's actually not up to you,
- 40:15Speaker 4: like you don't have that power, which is really sad
- 40:18Speaker 4: as someone like me who sometimes always wants to come
- 40:20Speaker 4: in and.
- 40:21Speaker 2: Fix everything, but it's true.
- 40:23Speaker 4: A lot of people then said, you know, sit down
- 40:25Speaker 4: and have an open conversation with her, talk to her
- 40:28Speaker 4: about it, openly, have a frank conversation. A lot of
- 40:32Speaker 4: people wanted to let us know about the ten times
- 40:35Speaker 4: I think it's twelve times Medicare rebate psychology sessions if
- 40:38Speaker 4: you go to your GP and get a mental health
- 40:41Speaker 4: care plan. I do also want to acknowledge that that
- 40:44Speaker 4: is getting harder and harder to access nowadays. So it's
- 40:49Speaker 4: hard nowadays, especially in Victoria. I know in Queensland it's
- 40:53Speaker 4: really challenging. I don't know a lot about the other states,
- 40:55Speaker 4: but I'm assuming we're all having the same issues because
- 40:59Speaker 4: across the Borderustralian doctors are having to increase their prices.
- 41:02Speaker 2: I'm not saying that's a bad thing.
- 41:04Speaker 4: They cost of living, crisis paying their staff, all of that,
- 41:07Speaker 4: like it has to come into it, but Medicare is
- 41:10Speaker 4: not keeping up and finding a GP that has no
- 41:15Speaker 4: gap is getting increasingly hard. If you found a GP
- 41:18Speaker 4: that has no gap and you just can claim it
- 41:20Speaker 4: all or medicare. It's even harder to find a psychologist
- 41:23Speaker 4: that operates under having no gap. If they do exist,
- 41:26Speaker 4: they usually have a really long weight period.
- 41:28Speaker 2: So I don't want you guys to think, oh.
- 41:29Speaker 4: They just say go to medicare. But I've dried that
- 41:31Speaker 4: and it's really hard. I totally get it. It's becoming
- 41:34Speaker 4: inaccessible and we need to do a lot more about it. However,
- 41:38Speaker 4: it is still a very valid pathway, and I wouldn't
- 41:42Speaker 4: be discouraged knowing that information. I'd go all right, well,
- 41:46Speaker 4: I'll give it a crack, because you know what, even
- 41:48Speaker 4: if there is a six month weight period, you're going
- 41:52Speaker 4: to need the help in six months anyway as well.
- 41:54Speaker 2: Yes, you need immediate help.
- 41:55Speaker 4: I totally get that, and we're going to put a
- 41:56Speaker 4: whole heap of tools and resources in our show notes
- 41:59Speaker 4: for you that involve immediate help. But if you want
- 42:02Speaker 4: to get onto a mental health care plan, I wouldn't
- 42:05Speaker 4: shy away from the weight I'd sign up. And you
- 42:07Speaker 4: know what can I do in the interim, How can I,
- 42:09Speaker 4: you know, build towards that because it could be invaluable
- 42:13Speaker 4: to changing your life in a way.
- 42:15Speaker 2: That you want it to.
- 42:16Speaker 4: Again, lots of people are saying, look, it's really hard,
- 42:18Speaker 4: but I would accept it as a money loss, but
- 42:21Speaker 4: keep my friend. Basically, all of your responses were really
- 42:25Speaker 4: on the same page, which I really liked.
- 42:27Speaker 2: That's not that common.
- 42:28Speaker 4: Usually there's like lots of like spicy opinions like oh,
- 42:31Speaker 4: you should tell your friend off, or should cut them
- 42:32Speaker 4: out if you do this, you should do that. Everyone
- 42:35Speaker 4: here in our DMS this week has been so empathetic
- 42:38Speaker 4: and kind. Wow, that's so lovely, which honestly we kind
- 42:41Speaker 4: of expected from how She's on the Money community. But yeah,
- 42:44Speaker 4: lots of people were just saying, look, it's just really
- 42:46Speaker 4: important that next time you do something like this, set
- 42:49Speaker 4: really clear boundaries about what you're paying actually means.
- 42:53Speaker 2: So that's probably a good place to leave it. Guys. Anyway,
- 42:56Speaker 2: have the best week.
- 42:57Speaker 4: We will see you bright and early on Monday morning
- 43:00Speaker 4: for a Money Diaries.
- 43:01Speaker 2: See you later, Bye, guys.
