Transcript
- 0:05Hello and welcome back to another episode of Mindset.
- 0:08Today is a little bit different. For those of you that are
- 0:10watching on YouTube, you'll see that we actually have the setup
- 0:14of me and Charles sat next to each other and that is because
- 0:16we have a guest today. We are joined by the Diet Starts
- 0:18Monday podcast host Roscoe. Hello, how are you?
- 0:23How's it going? I'm good.
- 0:24Thank you for having me. Good, We're excited.
- 0:26We're we're excited to introduce you to our way of podcasting
- 0:29where you have to give a little bit the risk of getting got
- 0:32back. But no, it's, it's good to have
- 0:35you here. Before we dive into more about
- 0:38you and what you get up to over on your podcast and in your
- 0:41life, We're going to do a quick run through on some things.
- 0:45We have an update, quite a big update.
- 0:47I know for you and I, Charles, this is quite a a big thing, but
- 0:50a world record has broken recently.
- 0:53Oh, the the beer, the beer mile world record was broken.
- 0:59Do you know what time it was? Put him on 4.
- 1:01Seven or something like that, someone told me the other day.
- 1:06Do do you know it? I can't remember now.
- 1:07OK, It was 427.3. You got the seven right, which
- 1:12is insane. Four O 7 would be ridiculous.
- 1:15That would be doping. But yeah.
- 1:18I think they're doping anyway. 4427.3 yeah, I think, I think us
- 1:213 here should do. One should.
- 1:23We yeah, we should host the The Beer Mile.
- 1:25Yeah, OK. Bassi Park.
- 1:27Tomorrow, bring your own beer the.
- 1:30Weather's going to be great. So that that's that's one update
- 1:34that's been broken. The next update is, I don't know
- 1:36if you've seen this, we've gone viral.
- 1:38I did see this. For all the wrong reasons in in
- 1:41theory. I never, I never realized how
- 1:43passionate people were on social media with Formula One.
- 1:47It's not people, it's Max Verstappen fans, right?
- 1:49Yes, so they all of them. For those unaware, we've posted
- 1:53a a video from The Last Podcast that has got a lot of views from
- 1:56the Formula One movie, and rage bait seems to be the thing that
- 2:00does really well. So there's a lot of people going
- 2:03back and forth. In fact, there is a
- 2:04conversation, which I was very tempted to read out on the
- 2:07podcast, between two men who are claiming to be older than each
- 2:11other. Well, they having a good.
- 2:13They are having a good with each other at this point and and
- 2:16honestly everyone that's putting in hate telling me that I should
- 2:19stop doing content is I'm just thanking them for the engagement
- 2:21and moving on. And it's fantastic because it's
- 2:23more comments, more views, it's great.
- 2:26So I'm keeping my eye on that and maybe we'll have an update
- 2:28if they used to keep going for the next two weeks where they
- 2:31where they choose to get to and who actually is older is what we
- 2:34will find out the. Comments section is a crazy
- 2:36place. It's.
- 2:37Great. And do you know what this is
- 2:38something that's useful for both the Mindsets podcast and the
- 2:41Dicer's Monday podcast. Any, any content that you see
- 2:44now you can repost on Instagram so you can like retweet it.
- 2:47So if you guys are listening to this and you think what can I do
- 2:50to help out the podcast, not only could you subscribe at
- 2:52Mindsets under score podcast on YouTube, you could also follow
- 2:56same for that starts Monday pocket.
- 2:58What's the What's the full app? That has Monday under score
- 3:00part. Perfect.
- 3:01You can repost stuff. So now you can force it upon
- 3:04your friends to like the same things as you.
- 3:06That's a that's a good move to do.
- 3:08The last update that I've got is I've discovered a phenomenon.
- 3:11Last week I was in Copenhagen. The Iron Man.
- 3:15Roscoe, you're more from the triathlon space.
- 3:17Are you aware of the Iron Man? Walk.
- 3:19Walk The Iron Man. Walk.
- 3:21Is that like the walk of death when people hit the wall?
- 3:24It's almost like that. It's the day after the Doms.
- 3:27If you're in a city, the doms around people are just walking
- 3:32and they walk extremely strangely, but you don't notice
- 3:36it at first. If you know that someone or if
- 3:39you know you're in the city where someone has just done an
- 3:40Iron Man, The Walking that's going on is extremely.
- 3:43It must be quite funny because it's like a heavily populated
- 3:46small town of triathletes that have just finished the height
- 3:49and they're exactly. That so you've got that going
- 3:51on, but then you've just got multiple people that at first
- 3:54you're like, cool, they're just walking around all these little
- 3:56sites, but then you actually see them walking and they're just
- 4:00being incredibly bizarre. And then you realize, oh, it's
- 4:02actually because they've, you know, killed themselves.
- 4:05The day before the Dons are pretty real, yeah.
- 4:07I mean, I haven't done a full one, but yeah.
- 4:09Well, let's talk about let's talk about you now on on the
- 4:12podcast. What we do with guests is we
- 4:14don't let you talk about you straight away.
- 4:16What we do is we force you to do show and tell.
- 4:19So you've brought something, Charles and I don't know what
- 4:20this is. We're going to quiz you about
- 4:22it. And yeah, go ahead.
- 4:25So yeah, basically I wanted to bring something that I think you
- 4:27had never seen before. It's not sport oriented, despite
- 4:30both podcasts being sport oriented.
- 4:32Can I put the mic down of? Course you can.
- 4:35Or do you want me to hold it for you?
- 4:36OK. We're also sorry.
- 4:37We've got the. Podcast guests, we've got the
- 4:40the 2nd guest, if you're watching on YouTube, you might
- 4:42be able to see that there's the occasional dog that comes in.
- 4:44This is pod dog Theo who's joining us.
- 4:47So he's not going to get in the way.
- 4:49You can hold this for the hour, but basically the it's a shell
- 4:53that I've gotten here that you can't find in the United
- 4:55Kingdom. It's only found in South Africa
- 4:57and half my family live in a place called Pettenburg Bay,
- 5:00which is a beautiful beach and town along the West Coast of
- 5:03South Africa. And basically these are quite
- 5:05rare. And we were walking on the
- 5:07beach. They wash up with the sea and
- 5:10only a few people can find them with like if you got a good eye.
- 5:14So I thought I'd bring the one that we found.
- 5:16They're super delicate and small, but it's actually a
- 5:19skeleton on a sea ocean. Oh, wow.
- 5:21But like this thing is like, oh, Razzy, beautiful and unique.
- 5:26And that's come all the way from Pedro Bay Western Caves, South
- 5:28Africa, and half my family actually lived there, so it's
- 5:33like a memorabilia piece that's very nice.
- 5:35That is actually really nice. It's really cool.
- 5:37Is it the two slits in there for?
- 5:40Those are the eyes. So it's actually a skeleton of
- 5:42the sea urchin animal. It slits the eyes.
- 5:44That's. Crazy, that looks like a
- 5:46Pokémon. It does.
- 5:48It's cool, I was. Going to say kind of.
- 5:49I thought I was genuinely wondering if that was like for a
- 5:52metal. No.
- 5:52And to find one that's fully formed, I got a not snapped on
- 5:56the sea. Like crap, like, you know,
- 5:58crashing. It's like pretty rare.
- 6:00Do do they? Where do you say this was from?
- 6:02Sorry. So Pittsburgh Bay is like a town
- 6:05on the West Coast of South Africa.
- 6:07Do they do any sporting events there that they should be giving
- 6:09out medals off because they've got the design done?
- 6:12100% that'll be an amazing medal.
- 6:14That would be it's. Quite a small quiet time, but
- 6:17they should. I'm actually going to suggest
- 6:19that. Host it, host it, we'll do the
- 6:21beer mile there and you'll get one of those.
- 6:23As a medal, I don't know if you look like a pants, so it's
- 6:25called a Pansy shell, but it's actually a skeleton.
- 6:28That's really cool. That's, that's genuinely up
- 6:29there with one of the coolest things.
- 6:30Yeah, before, before Roscoe came on.
- 6:33So it is genuinely a rule that we're not allowed to know what
- 6:35someone has brought on. So all he said was it's kind of
- 6:39cute. And me and Charles immediately
- 6:41were like, great, we can, we can rinse this.
- 6:43But it turns out actually it is. That is quite cute.
- 6:46I can't, I can't be rinsed. That can't be.
- 6:48Rinsed the description. Well done.
- 6:51So let's talk a little bit about you and the podcast, but also
- 6:55you. So what's the what's the
- 6:57background? You're obviously not born and
- 6:59bred in London. No.
- 7:00So born and bred in Cape Town, lived there my whole life, went
- 7:03to Bishop's School and then Stellenbosch University, quite
- 7:07like local town. Stellenbosch was great because
- 7:09it was about an hour outside of Cape Town.
- 7:11So we got to like live away from the family and but I didn't
- 7:14really do too much sport in Stellenbosch was more of a party
- 7:16scene, you know, friends and I made some really good friends.
- 7:20So no regrets, but the regret I have now, I spoke to Jamie
- 7:23Riddle approach our athlete on my podcast the other day and he
- 7:26does a lot of footage on his YouTube of training in the
- 7:28Selenbosch mountains and the grounds.
- 7:30And it's just unbelievable scenery and weather's always
- 7:33good. So I suppose I, I did, you know,
- 7:35miss a catch there. But then going from Selenbosch,
- 7:37I lived in Mauritius for six years working in finance and
- 7:41that was really great. Mauritius is a small country off
- 7:43the West Coast of Africa that was colonized by the French, but
- 7:48it's still an African country. So they speak French and Creoles
- 7:51like the local language. So that was really cool.
- 7:54And one of the things I'll mention later when you ask me
- 7:56those questions is, you know, moving abroad is quite a big
- 7:58step for anyone. But something I would suggest
- 8:01like 100% for people to do, learning new cultures and and
- 8:04new things. But Mauritius was super small.
- 8:08So it kind of got too condensed over the six years.
- 8:11I mean, there were literally like 3 restaurants in my street
- 8:13and one bar. Everyone knew what you were
- 8:16doing. You walk into the Golf Club,
- 8:17they know what you're drinking. Like, it's just that's, you
- 8:20know, super community vibe, which is also nice.
- 8:22I went back there to visit and you're hugging everyone from the
- 8:25Rottie man to the to the bartender.
- 8:27Like, they're like WAVY beat. So yeah, it was really cool.
- 8:31And then I spent another year in Cape Town and then came out to
- 8:35London about a year and three months ago.
- 8:38Nice. Yeah.
- 8:39And what are your initial thoughts of London?
- 8:41I enjoy it. I like the hustle and bustle.
- 8:43Completely different from Mauritius.
- 8:45We, I didn't put a jersey on for six years, so that's slow, but
- 8:51from a career point of view it's great.
- 8:52And the networking, the networking line is unbelievable.
- 8:55Meeting people like you and all sorts of people.
- 8:57And also the sport culture, the health and fitness culture is
- 9:00quite big here and I've started to sort of transition into that
- 9:02space. So that's been really nice.
- 9:04Meeting people from different walks and also from running,
- 9:07cycling, swimming, high rocks, CrossFit, there's just
- 9:10everything in anything, yeah, that you can find.
- 9:12It is a bit of a mess, actually. At the same time, you won't find
- 9:15one person that does one thing. Really.
- 9:16Yeah. Even the tennis courts,
- 9:18Battersea Park you can't book. No, no, yeah, it's a can't book
- 9:22myth that there is a booking system actually.
- 9:24I actually paid so many pounds when I got you to get pre
- 9:28booking. Like I mean ability didn't work.
- 9:30That's. Crazy.
- 9:31That's a rookie. Yeah, that's how they get them.
- 9:34That's that's what we do when we invite new people into our
- 9:36country. We're like I.
- 9:37Didn't know. Yeah.
- 9:39So that I made a few mistakes like that, You know, I went to
- 9:41third space. Three months.
- 9:42Oh. Don't get me started on that.
- 9:45It's one. Of my It's a sore topic.
- 9:47This is a This is a continuous gear grinder. 250 squid a month.
- 9:52Yeah, it's a lot, isn't it? It's, it's one of those things
- 9:55where, again, we'll preface it by saying if they want to
- 9:57sponsor us, then of course this is one of the best.
- 10:01Yeah, we'll move this feature. But I pay £30 a month for a pure
- 10:06gym membership and it does more than I need it to.
- 10:08I, I don't need the sauna with the old naked men.
- 10:12I don't need that in my. Life.
- 10:14I do love the sauna. With or with it?
- 10:19But my pre was like a white bike and a swimming pool.
- 10:23And so, like, those things were tough to find.
- 10:25But then I found Fitness First, Baker Street, Marty Bone and
- 10:28those like, fit the ball and was half the price.
- 10:30Even more than half the price, yeah.
- 10:32And is that because, well, since you've got to London, you
- 10:36mentioned how you've kind of got into the fitness scene.
- 10:38Were you doing what you do now, which is like triathlon based
- 10:41training before you came over? To so yes, because we signed up
- 10:45to the Muscle Bay Half Iron Man, which was kind of the start of
- 10:48the podcast. So looking at from a Dice House
- 10:50Monday point of view, that started two years ago in
- 10:53September now with my two best mates that I was living with in
- 10:56Seapoint, we had a cool digs pool on the Seapoint promenade.
- 10:59Like life is good. We had a set up like this at
- 11:02home so we could bring people in and the whole the podcast we
- 11:06started just to chat just a banter like this.
- 11:08But then it started to transition into pushing each
- 11:11other to doing things that we could like post on Diasus
- 11:13Monday. And like the mantra of Diasus
- 11:15Monday grew as we went. But we actually called it that
- 11:19because my mate Che, every Sunday we would have a big
- 11:23Friday, big Saturday, but then train Monday to Friday.
- 11:26And every Sunday he would look at us like, guys, the dice got
- 11:28his thought on Monday he'd think like, shit, he's just eaten
- 11:32order, eat Uber eats, like Macs, chocolates.
- 11:35Like we would say that every Sunday.
- 11:37We actually almost called the podcast Fired Up.
- 11:39It would be dead. It would be great in the great.
- 11:42We caught it there. I love the name.
- 11:43The name's great. Yeah, the name, the name is
- 11:45really. Good claims for the moment.
- 11:46He said it one Sunday, and I was like, guys, let's just call it
- 11:48that. And we all laughed, and that was
- 11:50it. Yeah.
- 11:50But then the mantra of dice was Monday, like going out there,
- 11:53setting a date, going after it like that, built with it.
- 11:56And then we started to do things like the whole fun.
- 11:58So you trained Monday to Friday, You're always training for like
- 12:01endurance sport. What are you doing?
- 12:03It's like rugby. For me personally it was for
- 12:05aesthetics, so if I had to be honest, not the best genetically
- 12:10gifted person. In terms of sports, I love
- 12:12sports school. I played as a perfect B team
- 12:14ever. I was B team.
- 12:16Captain, for everything that's the best.
- 12:19There's no responsibility, but you still get the credit.
- 12:21So I and I loved it, don't get me wrong, but like I must be
- 12:24honest it was more for aesthetics that the training for
- 12:27me mentally if I had to really dig.
- 12:29You know, I wish more people would admit that.
- 12:30Yeah, I think there's 100% reason why I got into training
- 12:34was purely aesthetics thing. I thought I was a fat shit, so I
- 12:38didn't want to. Yeah.
- 12:39And. I saw it in the gym like
- 12:40everyone does, you know, you do a couple of weight trainings and
- 12:42then I went for a couple of like what, 6K runs?
- 12:44I remember in Mauritius I could hardly do a 3K and I stopped.
- 12:47So like going back to then, it's been like a long journey.
- 12:50But then we just found passion for it.
- 12:51I don't really know how. I think for for me, it becomes
- 12:55habit and then when you lose that habit, you actually realize
- 12:58that you were relying on that quite a lot and then you get
- 13:00back into it. And that has almost actually
- 13:02become what this podcast sort of has been for me as well as like
- 13:06for a while it was like, oh, I'm habitually doing this on repeat.
- 13:09And then when it started to slow down, I was like, I kind of, I
- 13:13kind of need to talk about what's grinding my gears and
- 13:15like all these things that, all these things that we do now.
- 13:17And like, I actually really enjoy it.
- 13:19And it's, it's one of those things that after taking a
- 13:21slight step back from for a while, I was like, hold on a
- 13:23minute. No, I need to keep doing this
- 13:25for sure. But we we have the grace this
- 13:30time of doing a guest episode and Charles is with us.
- 13:32That was obviously going to happen.
- 13:33Charles has been far too involved to be cut out in any
- 13:36episodes. But Charles has got a coaching
- 13:38background. I do, I know for a fact that
- 13:39Charles is not sat here opposite Roscoe, going to stay quiet
- 13:42about the training side of things.
- 13:43So I'm going to let him. Dive, which I'm not.
- 13:46Going to let him loose first of all.
- 13:48First of all, you did the T100 a few weeks ago.
- 13:51How did it go? It went really well.
- 13:55It went really well. I was feeling super strong going
- 13:57into it. I was very happy with my taper,
- 13:59my training. I said, I think I said to you
- 14:01before, no matter what happened on the day, I was super happy
- 14:04with how I was entering the race.
- 14:05So whether it went well or poor, I'd done everything I could up
- 14:10until the race. The actual time, maybe probably
- 14:13a bit disappointed. I did cramp up on the run, so I
- 14:16had three minutes of lying down digging into my hamstring and
- 14:19the coach has said that I wasn't taking enough sodium.
- 14:22Sure, which as a big sweaty guy is probably 100% right.
- 14:26But also I was in ATT position for my first time on a race, so
- 14:29that could be different. Like leg angles, Sure, hamstring
- 14:34and yeah, but otherwise super good.
- 14:36You wonder what was the weather like?
- 14:37Oh, beautiful. Yeah, so super hot blue.
- 14:39Stars like sure, that will take like.
- 14:41Yeah, the sodium stuff, 100%. So it was hot, but we started at
- 14:446:30. It wasn't too bad.
- 14:46And remind me the distances then.
- 14:48So it was a 2K swim, Yeah, 80 K ride and an 18K cycle and right.
- 14:53So it's very similar to Half Fireman, Yes, OK.
- 14:56Short to the half, fireman. Yeah, yeah.
- 14:58But cycling through London like that was incredible. 4 lane
- 15:01highways close. Roads, yeah, really cool.
- 15:03Flat. Cruisy, but I've never been a
- 15:06Rd. cyclist in my history so running and swimming is
- 15:08definitely my strong points. And the swim I just loved.
- 15:11I was like a whale at the beach because I wanted to take it
- 15:13slow. Previous races my heart rate was
- 15:16like 175. I said I'm not swimming hard, so
- 15:19I was just chilling, like loving.
- 15:21It was good. You came out of the water
- 15:23because I was, I was there. I was filming Roscoe.
- 15:25I was not doing a great job as it actually turned out, but I
- 15:29you were still pretty early on out of the water for your wave
- 15:32as well. And you came out and you, you
- 15:33were literally chilling. You were laughing, joking,
- 15:36trying to talk to me. And I was like, we've had this
- 15:38discussion. Transition is where you lose it.
- 15:40In you go. Yeah, I just, I love it.
- 15:44I love the swim and it's a pity it's so short in these races and
- 15:47I want to do more swimming. So I did a swimming race the
- 15:48weekend before, 3K swim race that way.
- 15:52I pushed it and went hard and came out of a dizzy.
- 15:56But I've got my eye on the UK channel and like I pulled out of
- 15:59Alvin Island Swim, which was really.
- 16:01Sad. I'm interested in that because
- 16:03I've met a few S Africans who like.
- 16:05I think culturally there's like you swim from very small and
- 16:09swimming is a big part of life and sport and culture in South
- 16:12Africa. Is that actually true?
- 16:14You kind of swimming your whole life, 100% school.
- 16:17There's swimming pools, 25 meters.
- 16:19So you're always swimming at school, preschool all the way up
- 16:21to grade 7. I think you guys work in
- 16:23different grades, But yeah, so swimming always.
- 16:26And then also the beach, like the beach, like you're always at
- 16:30the beach. If your child is not a swim,
- 16:32that's a problem. So swimming lessons and stuff
- 16:35very regular but school pushes it and galas like all the way up
- 16:39to high school and uni so and then water.
- 16:42Polo as well, do you? Water polo?
- 16:43Yeah, sure. Interesting.
- 16:45Because when I was at school, we did some swimming lessons from
- 16:49like the age of, I want to say I must have been like 9 or 10.
- 16:53It was kind of compulsory part of school.
- 16:54But if you were bad, you just didn't swim.
- 16:57You just didn't swim. We've just.
- 16:58Talked about this before. Yeah.
- 16:59So it's, it's like in the UKI don't know if it's like a
- 17:01selective thing or it's like a genetic thing.
- 17:03But the kids who can swim, swim, Yeah.
- 17:05And the kids who just don't swim go and play other sports and
- 17:08there's, there's no real like push to get better.
- 17:10And that's where I am now because I'm sure we'll talk
- 17:13about it as well. I'm starting to get a little bit
- 17:14more into tryout. Well, you've got, you've got an
- 17:16announcement, an official announcement.
- 17:18Go on. Well, I mean I hinted to it last
- 17:21time on the podcast, but I have now officially signed up for my
- 17:23first 70.3, so that will be next year summer in Swansea.
- 17:29I know Wales, the Welsh coast. That's a hilly 1.
- 17:32The cycle's hilly, but luckily the rum route's pretty, pretty
- 17:36happy. And then the swim, I think it's
- 17:38like almost like a Bay swim or it's relatively enclosed.
- 17:42So it is sea swim, but I think the water should be OK.
- 17:46But that's, that's my challenge now because yeah, I had swimming
- 17:49lessons when I was younger at school, but since then, nothing.
- 17:53And I'm, I'm not good at swimming.
- 17:54I don't, no. I was going to say, I don't know
- 17:57though, because if I was to look at you and say your strength,
- 17:59I'd probably say your strength is on the bike because of where
- 18:02you're at right now. But you're running.
- 18:04Historically, your running has been your thing.
- 18:06So like those two would obviously be at the forefront,
- 18:09but I wouldn't say by any means you're a bad swimmer, I think.
- 18:12But also there's so little access to open water swimming in
- 18:16the UK you're talking about, or we can just jump in the ocean
- 18:18and we swim very, we're really confident in the ocean for us.
- 18:22Where am I going to swim open water in London?
- 18:24So I have very little to no experience swimming open water.
- 18:28And that the idea of a big, wide open expanse of water, a deep
- 18:32expanse of water where you can't see, that's kind of scary.
- 18:35So it's kind of like overcoming the fear of being able to swim
- 18:38in the water rather than the performance element.
- 18:40Like, I'm sure I can get through it, but it's like, what if I
- 18:43freak out in the water? So it's like all of the
- 18:45elements. For those that are listening,
- 18:46potentially from South Africa or other places that haven't been
- 18:48to London, the Thames is not an option people die in.
- 18:53There. Yeah, so you do, you do have a
- 18:55few lidos and they are good. But if you time it wrong,
- 19:00obviously they can be rammed because there aren't that many
- 19:02of them, especially if we're talking about this time of year.
- 19:04I mean, it's just a. Different to the ocean, yeah.
- 19:06So you don't see Swansea being like heavy swells?
- 19:09No, but because we at Muscle Bear, it was like heavy swells
- 19:12and they're like plenty of sharks underneath us.
- 19:16I think I'll be OK with that in. Wales but also one the wet suit
- 19:21is just such a game changer. Yeah, just practice swimming in
- 19:23the wet suit. Sure, because 1.
- 19:25You can also cramp in your calves because it's quite tight
- 19:28so keeps the blood. But also you get that buoyancy
- 19:31factor. 100% yeah so practice with a pool boy and put some
- 19:35Vaseline on but yeah it does help you just got to stay calm
- 19:37because a lot of people freak out in the swimming but it
- 19:40luckily it's the shortest distance and if you just stand
- 19:43back a little bit like let people go and don't get mixed in
- 19:46the. I think that's the beauty of it
- 19:48as well. I had this conversation with a
- 19:49friend a couple of days ago where typically if I was
- 19:52entering something before, I'd be really hot on myself being
- 19:58super competitive at it. You mentioned my experience with
- 20:01high rocks. Or any sort of running race.
- 20:03The biggest demise is how competitive he is.
- 20:05I've. Got a lot of pressure on myself,
- 20:06but I know that swimming is a weakness for me.
- 20:09So just getting through the swim would be a major achievement and
- 20:12I'll be really pleased with that.
- 20:13Similar to Will on the weekend at Copenhagen, one of my clients
- 20:17who just became an Iron Man, which is really cool.
- 20:19Shout out. But yeah, the swim is kind of a
- 20:23scary place to be if you don't have that experience.
- 20:25And that's what he what he felt. And you're in the water for an
- 20:28hour 45. Well, yeah, he was, He was. 40.
- 20:31Five yeah and so he his basic thing was he knows that he can
- 20:34smash the bike we will actually have will on at some point soon
- 20:37so we can we can talk to him about it 45 so an hour and 45
- 20:40but he was going not. Shelter he was.
- 20:42No, I'm like, that's yeah, that wasn't Charles's water.
- 20:45Just swim cut off 2 hours 20. So he got in.
- 20:49He was the 4th, 4th last person into the water.
- 20:53He put a cap on for the first wave so that he stuck out like a
- 20:57sore thumb towards the back and that meant that they could
- 21:00basically just keep an eye on him.
- 21:01But he, he said he got into the water and what actually helped
- 21:05his confidence was that after 10 meters into the water, he heard
- 21:09someone that got in at the same time of him ask for help.
- 21:12And he was like, well, I'm not that bad and immediately carried
- 21:16on. But he basically just switched
- 21:17it up from doing a bit of front crawl, a bit of breaststroke, a
- 21:20bit of front crawl and just kept himself calm because he's had
- 21:24issues with wet suits and freak out simple before.
- 21:26So he's been doing swimming lessons and stuff.
- 21:28But he got through it. And when he came out, he was
- 21:30beaming ear to ear. What was his overall time?
- 21:3311 hours, 11 minutes. Shit that's good with an hour
- 21:3645. Yeah, so he did really, really
- 21:38well to work. And like, if you can shore up a
- 21:40little bit of swim technique, then you're on for a really
- 21:42solid time. Yeah, great on the bike, great
- 21:44on the run. If you do one swimming session a
- 21:47week until Swansea you'll be 100 loads of time.
- 21:50Yeah, 100%. So from your perspective
- 21:52training wise, what does a training week look like for you
- 21:55at the moment? Because you're you're what, 4
- 21:57weeks out from your Ayman? Yeah, so it's a good, it's a
- 21:59great question to come now because I've literally just had
- 22:01a really solid week. So basically on between running,
- 22:06cycling and swimming. Monday I did A16K where it's
- 22:10like 1K marathon pace and then 1K off then go to my 9:00 to.
- 22:14Five. I saw that on your Strava.
- 22:17And that's marathon pace, not Iron Man marathon pace.
- 22:20That would be like just doing marathon.
- 22:22But then lunchtime of my 9:00 to 5:00 I'm doing my strength
- 22:25sessions in the gym. Luckily the fitness versus one
- 22:28minute away. Then post sauna with the old
- 22:31man, then choose there. It'll be like a 3K swim plus an
- 22:37hour on the what bike or on my indoor trainer an hour 20 maybe
- 22:42and then so another double session.
- 22:43Then Wednesday is another double session.
- 22:45It'll be a run plus another strange session at lunchtime.
- 22:50And then Thursday will be a 3K swim.
- 22:53Friday was what was Friday I think another run.
- 22:57Then Saturday at a long cycle 108 KS and then Sunday I had a
- 23:0025K run. So seven days a week, multiple
- 23:04double days, I. Have so many questions, go on
- 23:07back to file. I like the fact that you also
- 23:10mentioned that you're working a nine to five as well.
- 23:12So it's like having to do all of that volume around a job that is
- 23:17like a challenge in itself, waking up super early or you're
- 23:21just managing it around. Waking up super early so I got
- 23:24to get like tomorrow I got to run a half marathon again in the
- 23:27morning before work. So I'm up at 5, got to get out
- 23:29there, got to get done back home.
- 23:31Shall change to the at 5:00 and. You've been doing that.
- 23:33How many weeks has prep been? Five months, so this is probably
- 23:38my biggest week, 15 hours, 160 kilometres, but basically that's
- 23:43over the last four to five months.
- 23:46And we had a half Ironman in November last year in Austria,
- 23:48which was beautiful. And the training was probably
- 23:51half what I'm doing now. But it's, it's been 2 years of
- 23:54triathlon training in general. But yeah, last four to five
- 23:58months is when we picked it up. But it's been 5:00 AM mornings,
- 24:00Monday to Friday, training on weekends.
- 24:02But then we have a deload week, obviously once a month.
- 24:05I think people, that's the thing people forget to consider and
- 24:09that's something working with Will, who just did Copenhagen
- 24:12Iron Man, something that you just completely neglect.
- 24:15It's like if you're doing a long brick session or something like
- 24:18that, or like you say you have to run 1/2 marathon, I'm working
- 24:219:00 to 5:00, sometimes longer hours than that when I'm
- 24:23working, like how am I actually fitting that in?
- 24:25And that's like the behind the scenes that you don't get to see
- 24:28a lot of. So I think, and we've said it
- 24:30before, in terms of marathon training, just getting through
- 24:32the training is an achievement to get to the start line fit and
- 24:35healthy. So to be able to do that and put
- 24:38yourself on the start line, like you said at the beginning of the
- 24:40T100, I was just happy to be there in good shape, right.
- 24:44So whether I perform well or badly, it is what it is because
- 24:47I've, I've done the work up into that.
- 24:48So like that's commendable and. It's do you know what I find
- 24:50really interesting when I talk to people about Iron Man's?
- 24:52I'm like the training for it. People will be like, Oh yeah,
- 24:56they've done an Iron Man. I'll be like, do you know what
- 24:58that is? Do you know what that actually
- 24:59entails? And I go through it and I'm like
- 25:01just shy of 4K swim, 180K bike ride and then a marathon.
- 25:05And they're like, whoa, when they hear the marathon bit after
- 25:07they're like, whoa. And then they're like, how do
- 25:09you even train for that? And I'm like, well, if they do a
- 25:11full time job, they're up at 4-5 every morning for months.
- 25:16And that, that gets as much of A shock as the marathon bit of me
- 25:20saying what an Iron Man is. And I think that that 100% sort
- 25:24of signifies what it means is like the months of effort you
- 25:28have to put in to actually just finish it, let alone aim for a
- 25:31time in the in in the 1st place. Is is mad.
- 25:34I think lots of lots of it is contextual as well where you say
- 25:37you have to ride 180 K, people like, well, that's like a long
- 25:41bike ride, but go and ride 180 K.
- 25:44It's like even riding 100 miles, 160K, that messes you up.
- 25:48There's hours and hours on the bike.
- 25:50So then hop off and just go for a marathon.
- 25:52Like it, it doesn't make sense. And like when I was tracking,
- 25:55will you know the guys, the guy woke up earlier than me.
- 26:00He started before I was even out of bed and then I did my whole
- 26:04day, did my start and he's, oh, he's, oh, he's just got on the
- 26:08run. Yeah, he's on being on the bike
- 26:10for seven. Hours, I think he's he's very,
- 26:13very good on the bike. I mean, if we're, if we're
- 26:14talking about, you know, what the average person or the even
- 26:19even the average athlete in the UK can, can put out on a bike,
- 26:23Will is above that in his Iron Man race.
- 26:26He is holding that for five hours, 35 minutes without
- 26:30aerobars. I don't know what your
- 26:32prediction without aerobars. So like he's, he's good on a
- 26:35bike. He's not obviously going to be
- 26:37breaking world records or anything with doing that.
- 26:39So that also puts into perspective that if he's average
- 26:42for Iron Man, imagine on that, imagine how good people are and
- 26:45he's putting in hours and hours on the bike, as I'm sure you are
- 26:47as well. And it's just like, it's
- 26:49unbelievable that you can sustain that for that amount of
- 26:51time. Like you said, you can live
- 26:53pretty much a whole day in that time that someone's just sat on
- 26:55the Bible. It's incredible, yeah.
- 26:56But that's what grinds my gears is people that come from a
- 26:59riding back. Save it, Save it to hear it.
- 27:04We're gonna we're gonna hear it. We're gonna hear it.
- 27:06Save it, we're gonna hear it. I'm for sure you're gonna forget
- 27:09about it by the time you get to cry.
- 27:10My gears is where it's. Been for many years.
- 27:13OK, So what what we'll do is another thing that we always do
- 27:16with our guests. And I appreciate that since
- 27:18you've started the podcast, since you've started training, a
- 27:21lot of things have changed to where you are right now, sat on
- 27:23a bench in a guy who you didn't know is five months ago's
- 27:27kitchen living area podcast studio.
- 27:30Sorry. Yeah.
- 27:32So in that time, a lot has changed.
- 27:35Things have seemingly started to pick up quite a lot recently,
- 27:38both for the podcast and for yourself.
- 27:41Now that we're on the brink of, you know, for Lion Man as well,
- 27:45what would three pieces of advice be for a younger version
- 27:49of you? Doesn't have to be the same
- 27:50version of, you can be different ages, but three advice, Yeah.
- 27:56Well, definitely the first one would have to be like, do it
- 27:58now. And because Diet Sauce Monday is
- 28:00all about signing up, so it took us three years to start the
- 28:03podcast. So I could literally go back to
- 28:05that guy and be like, wake up, like start, Why are you not
- 28:07starting? And that's been the biggest
- 28:09thing that I said to myself, just sign up to that race,
- 28:12whatever is lingering in your mind when you go to sleep.
- 28:14I found every time I put my head in my pillow, I was thinking
- 28:16about starting a podcast, but I never did it.
- 28:19Like, how weird is that? And so many people must have
- 28:21that feeling about anything during a race, speaking to your
- 28:24boss about a race, starting business, whatever it is.
- 28:27So do it now. Definitely.
- 28:29My other piece of advice, like I said earlier, was if you get an
- 28:32opportunity to live abroad, whether it's for a short period
- 28:34of time or a long period of time, 100% take it.
- 28:37So cool to meet different people and they're in different
- 28:40cultures. Having done it twice now, no
- 28:42regrets. Unbelievable.
- 28:44And if you haven't gone to South Africa, go there.
- 28:48And the fourth, the third one would be, yeah, just I don't
- 28:52really have a third one off the top of my head.
- 28:56Remember, count to three, that kind of thing, Yeah.
- 28:59When going into a race, I'd say definitely stay calm because a
- 29:02lot of the time they call it my coach calls of getting aroused.
- 29:06When you go into a race, people get aroused.
- 29:08Definitely stay calm. Do some breath work because you
- 29:11don't want that heart rate to get too high because it'll stay
- 29:14there for your whole race and burnout.
- 29:16That's cool. I like that.
- 29:17Have you got more questions on coaching or programming?
- 29:19I do, yeah. Go on.
- 29:21But I, I want to, I want your coach to use a different term
- 29:25than arousal. I, I call it over stimulation,
- 29:29but it's the same thing. And even now, that sounds kind
- 29:31of. Weird.
- 29:32No? But maybe maybe that's the
- 29:33problem because you get over stimulated.
- 29:35Maybe he just gets aroused. The mid term is specific to him.
- 29:40Maybe that's why he gets in the water and loves it.
- 29:42Maybe that's why you get into higher options and start
- 29:44miscounting match. It could be.
- 29:45It could be. Anyway, let's move that on.
- 29:47I wanted to actually just quickly, if we've got time, dig
- 29:50a little bit more into the strength work that you're
- 29:53getting specific to your training.
- 29:55Because again, when you think about getting good for a long
- 29:59distance triathlon or triathlon, what are you looking at?
- 30:01You're looking at 3 disciplines, swimming, biking, running.
- 30:04The best thing to do is those things, swimming, biking,
- 30:07running. But obviously the strength work
- 30:09that you're doing is important for resilience around staying
- 30:13healthy and uninjured. I just wondered if we could get
- 30:16like a snapshot into what your strength training looks like.
- 30:19Absolutely. So I'm bringing it up as you
- 30:21were saying so that I can show you.
- 30:25But basically it's like kettlebell work mostly, and it's
- 30:28squats, lunges and then weird like cross lunges.
- 30:33It's all very quite technical with a with a kettle ball and
- 30:37two maybe, you know, weights on either side.
- 30:40So would you say the majority of what you're doing across the
- 30:42week is lower body focused? 100% there's.
- 30:44No, no upper body. OK, interesting.
- 30:46It's in lower body, glutes, hip, calves, hamstrings, hamstrings,
- 30:50quads and it's like quite technical and core.
- 30:53There's always a corset at the end.
- 30:56And so, and then is your your coaching bespoke?
- 30:59You're getting one to one coaching or OK, fine.
- 31:01So OK. So would you say that the
- 31:04training has been tailored towards your weaknesses because
- 31:08your coach has gone well, he's basically a fish.
- 31:10He doesn't, he doesn't need to focus on maybe some upper body
- 31:14pulling or he's, he's got pretty healthy shoulders already.
- 31:16I don't need to. Or would you say as a snapshot,
- 31:19as a whole, triathletes are looking more at lower body
- 31:22strength work than upper body? Yeah, 100%.
- 31:24I would say the latter. I do think that we knew that I
- 31:27was good at swimming, so I only swim twice a week.
- 31:29I think some people go swimming more, but in terms of upper body
- 31:34strength, yeah, I don't. I've never seen that across my.
- 31:37Well, I guess it's it's it's relative to how long you're
- 31:40spending on the bike and how long you're running versus how
- 31:42long you're actually in the water.
- 31:44Unless you're bad at swimming, because Even so, they're
- 31:47spending. Baby on the bike, Then you'll
- 31:49collect more. Yes, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 31:51True it is. True.
- 31:52Ohh. God.
- 31:52OK, that's gonna pull me into the next part.
- 31:56Hang on, hang on. I've got, I've got one more.
- 31:57And then when you're training for your biking or running
- 32:01sessions, are you working in zones?
- 32:04Is a lot of your work heart rate base or is it specific to paces
- 32:08or how's that kind of figured out?
- 32:09So it's specific to paces. So he does like a test.
- 32:12So I did a 400 meter Sprint swim for the swimming and I did a 5K
- 32:17as far as you could go and then the cycle is an FTP.
- 32:20So FTP is so cycles to the FTP and I quite like that.
- 32:23So my FTP now is 260. That's functional threshold
- 32:26power for. Which is how you hold that for
- 32:29what, 20 minutes is your average?
- 32:31And so now everything on the indoor trainer is set to that
- 32:34FTP. So if we're doing VO2 Max and
- 32:38we're doing like one minute at 280 watts, it does it
- 32:40automatically. So I have 10 sets of 280 watts
- 32:43for one minute, yeah. Or if we're doing hills, it's 10
- 32:46minutes at 240 watts, so I quite like that.
- 32:48About Swift, yeah, super cool and automatic.
- 32:50And is your programming delivered through training piece
- 32:52a great ONS yeah, automatically. It got so technical so quickly.
- 32:57I was. Going to say no, no ones using
- 32:59Swift is basically a computerized game version of
- 33:02cycling. But it does look, output wise,
- 33:04really good. And one of the things that I
- 33:05think is great is it's way more engaging.
- 33:07Like if you can race someone or just even race yourself, then
- 33:10that's going to push you in those moments where like you are
- 33:13on a ridiculously long bike ride where you kind of just want to
- 33:16get it done. And like you might be like, I
- 33:18can sit 3 watts below. Like who really cares?
- 33:20Well, if you're getting overtaken by your old self,
- 33:22you're probably not going to let that happen.
- 33:23But I, I, I've loved the indoor trainer, especially for London
- 33:27when, you know, it's raining outside and all that type of
- 33:29thing. I did a Half Iron Man on the
- 33:30indoor trainer in my house for 2 1/2 hours and loved it.
- 33:33Had the TV on and it just changes automatically.
- 33:36Yeah. So it's beautiful, yeah.
- 33:38That is really convenient. Cool.
- 33:40Well, can I go to my ground my gears?
- 33:42Because we're, we're, we're all about to spill the ground.
- 33:45My gears. I was like, we could go down a
- 33:47rabbit hole talking about. We can trap.
- 33:49On and trap on training, but we'll save that.
- 33:50So definitely come swimming with you anytime.
- 33:53Oh, that's key. I'm not invited.
- 33:57I don't. I don't.
- 33:58Know if I watched that a ridiculous amount?
- 33:59I don't know how to say no. OK, so grind my gears.
- 34:06We've had a couple of entries from the lovely listeners.
- 34:09So again, for anyone that's new to this podcast, if you are
- 34:11interested in getting involved with the podcast, you can do so
- 34:14by using the social media app Mindsets under score podcast.
- 34:19We post on stories, you can have your input and then you can ask
- 34:22your questions or give your crime ideas straight to us.
- 34:26So without further ado, well, this is that.
- 34:32You know what? I'm going to leave that as a
- 34:33relatively unsmooth transition. Actually, I reckon Roscoe's
- 34:36changed shirt claims it was because it was hot.
- 34:38It's definitely not because it's covered in South Africa and he's
- 34:40ready to go. Later on when we get to the The
- 34:43Rocks game, however, we were going to move on to Crime My
- 34:46Gears, but then while we were doing the T-shirt change, we
- 34:50well Roscoe. Is one of us.
- 34:51T-shirt and the rest of us stayed here.
- 34:54He mentioned actually that your training wise you haven't done
- 34:58like a full marathon or anything like that going into this.
- 35:00Yeah. So I wanted to say earlier when
- 35:02we were touching on what I was doing for the week, but
- 35:04basically I haven't done a marathon.
- 35:05My longest run has been 25 kilometers, which was yesterday.
- 35:09And my longest cycle is 112 kilometers.
- 35:12And we were just talking about, we've spoken about it a lot.
- 35:15They call it rubbish miles where people try and go too far in in
- 35:19one go where it's unnecessary. And another element is I've seen
- 35:22people training for marathons that are going to be hilly
- 35:25during a lot of hill training. That's also like unnecessary.
- 35:28So it's just interesting to see. Also, I want to key on there is
- 35:32the unnecessary bit like if you, if you're not aware it's
- 35:35unnecessary in terms of if let's say you decided to go and do a
- 35:39180K bike ride and then followed it with a full like a full
- 35:43marathon as part of your training.
- 35:44So you know what the distance feels like.
- 35:46Well, arguably if you did half of both, which is still quite a
- 35:49lot, at least you can then recover and do another session
- 35:52that's beneficial the next day rather than just rinsing
- 35:54yourself feeling ruined for five days and then you've basically
- 35:57lost five days training just because you did that.
- 35:59You do have to prioritize like relative intensity in your
- 36:01sessions because otherwise you won't see the adaptation.
- 36:05And also like if you're going to do freaking 180K bike and then a
- 36:0942K run, why don't you just do the whole thing?
- 36:13You might as well have just done the swing as.
- 36:14Well, yeah, you might as well, but.
- 36:17It's a right point, she's saying.
- 36:19Because this week is a full week.
- 36:21Then on Saturday I've got a half Iron Man basically without the
- 36:24storm, and then again the next weekend and then two weeks over.
- 36:27But at least you can do that because if physically you're in
- 36:29a position where you can do that and recover, But like if you
- 36:32just decided to go off and do, even if you decide to break up
- 36:34me like I'm doing the full distance today, but I'm going to
- 36:36have an hour between each thing as a transition, that's still a
- 36:39crazy amount of load. And that hour is not going to be
- 36:41long enough for your body to actually recover in any way that
- 36:43makes the next thing really that much easier.
- 36:45So that's an. Importance of having a coach and
- 36:49someone to guide you through it and, and overlooking all of your
- 36:52training going, you're doing enough, it's OK, you don't need
- 36:56to do anymore. So it's just like pull the reins
- 36:58back and have someone to kind of oversee it and make sure you're
- 37:01not getting injured and you're obviously getting the adaptation
- 37:04required to get fitter. And also you said last week your
- 37:07training week added up to what, 260 K so that you've done a full
- 37:11training week. I mean, you've done the full
- 37:13distance across the week. When it comes to race week,
- 37:15you're probably going to do a similar total distance across
- 37:17the week. It's just that most of it's
- 37:18going to be on the deck. So like there's actually not
- 37:20that much difference when you look at it like.
- 37:21That on straw though, so you don't.
- 37:23You don't. Want to be doing double the
- 37:24distance one week just because in four weeks time you're going
- 37:26to be in half the distance that week.
- 37:27It just all happens to be on one day.
- 37:29Well, I'm not Guinea pig, so let's see.
- 37:30Well, yeah, we will. We will see, but no, we thought
- 37:33that would be important to mention actually, because we're
- 37:36about to then rinse the fitness industry.
- 37:37So we wanted to basically do karma and do the right thing
- 37:40first. Now grind my gears.
- 37:43We've had a couple of people write in with theirs, but we
- 37:46obviously have a guest and we are intrigued to see what Roscoe
- 37:50has brought with him. He said that there was one
- 37:51that's been burning for a while. Do you want to let that free
- 37:53now? Well, it came.
- 37:54Two have come up in our conversation. 1 is good.
- 37:59Bike riders like doing Iron Man's.
- 38:01It grinds my gears because it's just riding the the riding part
- 38:07of the Iron Man is the longest. So let's call it 5 hours to six
- 38:09hours. These guys ride that easy.
- 38:12Like some guys can ride on bikes.
- 38:14My friends, they 16 kilograms less than me because they ride
- 38:19all the time and they're doing like 600 kilometers a month for
- 38:2210 years. So like they get on this.
- 38:25This is like the the debate between.
- 38:27I've actually got this. I've actually got this schedule,
- 38:29but we can bring it in now. Wait, wait, wait, wait.
- 38:31Just to counter before we even do that.
- 38:33My grind my gears is when good swimmers do Iron Man, That's not
- 38:38fair. Why it sucks?
- 38:39That's an uneven play. That's an hour of the 11 hours.
- 38:43I'm just, you know what? There's three of us.
- 38:45It grinds my gears when good runners do Iron Man's that that
- 38:48pisses me off. But this actually, we'll, we'll
- 38:51cut in. I mean, we've had barely any
- 38:53structure to this episode anyway so far, so we might as well keep
- 38:55it going. It's at least it's consistent,
- 38:57so. The question that we had, you
- 38:59messaged me, was it earlier this week you said who would win in
- 39:02an Iron Man. And this is this is actually a
- 39:04question towards you, but we'll probably have a short discussion
- 39:06on it. Who would win?
- 39:08Michael Phelps Tade Pagacha. Tade Pagacha from Yeah Cycling
- 39:14or so we basically have the world best in each discipline.
- 39:21Who do you think would win the Iron Man?
- 39:24Yeah, easy, I think. I think for me it has to be.
- 39:27Yeah, because like this is. The longest time.
- 39:30And we have to assume, we have to assume that the other for the
- 39:32other disciplines there are a basic level like I don't, I
- 39:35don't know how good. I do just say swimming or
- 39:38running, but the carryover from cycling into running, the
- 39:41mechanics is so similar and you have such good aerobics, right?
- 39:46He's VO2 Max is like 70. He's just cruising like Kapoge
- 39:49could also definitely be on his tails.
- 39:51I don't know about faults. I I do think, I do think felt to
- 39:54come last. Yeah, I think he'd come last.
- 39:56Like aerobically, yeah, he's great.
- 39:57But he does 3.8 K, he gets a what, half an hour lead?
- 40:01Because you just don't know if he's ever sat on a bike, you
- 40:03know, and if you haven't sat on a bike and you do 180, the
- 40:06muscles and stuff, cramping, he's got more chance of cramp
- 40:08because he's got very muscle. Doesn't matter anything about it
- 40:11and like. That thing is you saying being
- 40:13top heavy because you're training too much upper body is
- 40:15not good for the aerodynamics when you're on the bike.
- 40:17What I would love to see is I would assume that Kachogi is
- 40:19going to be last in to the run, but how far behind and how?
- 40:25Like how much does how much does he claw back it?
- 40:28Would. Just be such a good race.
- 40:30It would be a great race to watch.
- 40:31So you know, they're obviously good on they're they're
- 40:33listening to this. So guys, let us know when you
- 40:35want us to organise it. What?
- 40:36Do you know the enhanced games? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 40:38yeah. We're getting all wrong.
- 40:39Yeah, on on more gear than they're already at.
- 40:44So the next grind my gears, I'll I'll take one.
- 40:48We've had someone write in with one and I'm I'm not going to
- 40:51mention them because I don't feel like this was something
- 40:54that they needed to be protected from, but they might do because
- 40:57it might be something that their company does.
- 40:59So they're grind my gears with JP, JP Morgan finish a tease.
- 41:05So when you do the JP Morgan, but when people are wearing
- 41:09those in and in and about, that does piss me off.
- 41:13Like come on, you don't need to. That's really good.
- 41:15You're right. You've done 1/2 marathon.
- 41:17That's really good. That's like.
- 41:18It's like, that's worse than wearing your medal out to dinner
- 41:21on a different day to the event. But JP Morgan on it is like.
- 41:25No, if you're wearing wearing a medal for finishing a 5K race,
- 41:30come on. I didn't.
- 41:33Make good idles and Parklands. I.
- 41:35Know you don't know. Park no, but be like if you got
- 41:37a medal for Parkland then you wore it out for dinner.
- 41:40Yeah, Yeah, it wouldn't, it wouldn't be great if you.
- 41:43Wearing my Iron Man 1. Oh yeah, for sure, for sure.
- 41:46That can also get you free stuff.
- 41:47Copenhagen, In Copenhagen that would get you a free, you know,
- 41:50there's rickshaws that'll give you a free rickshaw anywhere in
- 41:54the city, which is the worst idea.
- 41:56But it was it was well. If you can't walk, I mean,
- 41:58that's great. Yeah, but you'd think they might
- 42:00do like a taxi promotion. Or like they do with the London
- 42:02Marathon. You dare you get free
- 42:03underground. No, you just get rickshaw.
- 42:05Would you get the tattoo? No, no, Really.
- 42:09Oh, shame. I enjoyed filming.
- 42:11We'll get the tattoo. Did he get one?
- 42:12Yeah, he got the tattoo. Yeah, I'd definitely.
- 42:14Get one. Where did he go?
- 42:16Well, apparently so. He put this up for debate and
- 42:18people, if you're listening to this, let us know what your
- 42:20opinions are. But it has to be on the lower
- 42:22portion of the calf, just above the sock line.
- 42:24You can cover it then if you want to.
- 42:26But like, that is the key location.
- 42:28And it's really simple, just a black outline.
- 42:29You don't have to go crazy with the colours.
- 42:31I know some people. So there is there like a like a
- 42:33community thing. Oh.
- 42:34It's a thing. Oh yeah, it's a thing.
- 42:35No, the Iron Man tattoo is a thing, Yeah.
- 42:36Yeah, so I jumped at saying no just because I haven't got a
- 42:39tattoo and the first one I have to get is Diocese Monday because
- 42:41one of my other hosts has done it already.
- 42:43Yeah, OK. If I have to just.
- 42:45Do them at the same. Time incorporate the two.
- 42:47Yeah, you actually could. Yeah, maybe.
- 42:48That's the hard line. You could have the I'm not going
- 42:51to go into it. We're not we're not a tattoo
- 42:55designing podcast. Have you got a Grandma Gears?
- 42:58Yeah, line bikes riding around Richmond Park.
- 43:03Yeah, Amen. You've got to clock your KS in
- 43:05somehow, surely? Oh.
- 43:06Mate, it's OK, right? Let me just give some context.
- 43:11So I think this is only specific to people who probably ride
- 43:14their bikes around Richmond Park could maybe more into their
- 43:17cycling line bikes. Just they don't have a place in
- 43:20Richmond Park because they're people who don't really know how
- 43:23to ride and they're like trying to film the deer and they're
- 43:26weaving all over the place. And I nearly got taken out by
- 43:28one on the way here. So it's fresh on my mind.
- 43:30I was just annoying and I just like, I don't like it.
- 43:34And that's why we have. Ground, I guess.
- 43:36Do you know what it does? It does annoy me a little bit.
- 43:37The line bites can get out there because when I have a, when I've
- 43:40ever gone over that way, they're just literally on the grass,
- 43:43like randomly lying there. I'm like this, this is not
- 43:46London. Come on, we don't do that here.
- 43:48Yeah, obviously they don't have a place in in Richmond Park.
- 43:51I'm going to. Combine with what you said
- 43:53earlier where you just don't like slow people.
- 43:56You didn't say that, did you? That wasn't me, you would say.
- 43:59That no, no, no, I I'm going to, as we slowly pass it back, I'm
- 44:04going to weigh in with one of mine.
- 44:06My one this week is something that I saw yesterday, which is
- 44:10egregious and I genuinely don't think I'm going to see it many
- 44:12more times in my life. I was in the gym the other day
- 44:15and someone is using clips on the Smith machine, which if you
- 44:23don't know the Smith machine is it's impossible to have the bar
- 44:26at an angle. That's the whole purpose of the
- 44:29machine is that the bar stays level.
- 44:30It's on 2 rails so putting clips on that.
- 44:32Do you not think though that were they, were they spotting?
- 44:37They were lunging. Do you not think that the upward
- 44:40movement on the bar could potentially, over time, make the
- 44:44plates slide slightly? Yeah, over an hour or two.
- 44:46Oh, really? Yeah, yeah, yeah, I.
- 44:48Or maybe they're just so well practiced at putting.
- 44:51Plates. Stop defending them.
- 44:52You know, you know for a fact that if you saw one of your
- 44:54clients do that, they wouldn't be your client anymore.
- 44:56No, I'd be like I, I'm, I appreciate that you're
- 44:59practicing safe, safe, safe so. It's it's muscle memory.
- 45:02Yeah, it's gone. I'm putting weight on the bar.
- 45:04So now I need to put clips on the bar because all these things
- 45:07I'll. Definitely put the clips on in
- 45:09that situation before I'm quite nervous in the gym.
- 45:12He's like, yeah, yeah, like. What?
- 45:15He puts the clips on the kettle bells I reckon.
- 45:19Have you got? What was the second one you
- 45:21mentioned? That the second one is going
- 45:23back to training peaks which might be if people don't know
- 45:26but getting a non green block. This is so specific, you're
- 45:31going to have to give more. Yeah.
- 45:33It's like what Training Peaks actually is for the people who
- 45:35don't know. Yeah.
- 45:36Basically Training Peaks is the training platform that the coach
- 45:39sets your training for the week and he'll put in a block there.
- 45:43Say it's an easy run for an hour.
- 45:45If you run for 44 minutes, orange.
- 45:48If you run for 35 minutes, red. And then your whole calendar
- 45:52looks like shit basically. And it's just so because a 35
- 45:56minute run is a good run. It doesn't have to be an hour.
- 46:01And then people like it can actually get to people, like
- 46:03emotionally and like people get anxious about not hitting their
- 46:06blocks and not having. It's the same on Strava where
- 46:09you get consistency across your your like the amount you're
- 46:13doing across each week. So it's like if I hit 35 KS per
- 46:17week, which is what I've been doing for the last four weeks in
- 46:19my prep for 10K race, if I don't hit 35, it's like this slight
- 46:24dip or it's slight peak and it just is so unsatisfying that
- 46:27emotionally gets to me. I do that.
- 46:30I reckon that's kind of half the point though, isn't it?
- 46:33It's like it's supposed to keep you accountable.
- 46:34Yeah, that is, yeah. But like there's limits because
- 46:37like to all the tech you know, waking up and getting a bad
- 46:40sleep score. Yeah.
- 46:42How's it going? Getting an orange block on my
- 46:44training peaks in. I think we're talking to the
- 46:45right audience there. People will be able to relate
- 46:48to. Yeah, yeah, sure.
- 46:49Relatable. Another one that I've got, which
- 46:51is extremely random pissing in the pool.
- 46:56Which pool? Surely people don't do that.
- 46:58I've been I've been raised, I've been raised that pissing in the
- 47:01pool not I didn't believe the die thing.
- 47:03Like, you know, when you're told on holiday, there's no for those
- 47:06that thought that was true, it's not true, but I just didn't
- 47:09think that people actually did that.
- 47:10But. I'm but if you're I'm we're
- 47:12probably speaking to someone who has more experience with
- 47:14competitive swimming. Swimmers very famously and are
- 47:18well known for they spend like hours in the pool.
- 47:21They're just going to piss in the pool.
- 47:23Just get out. That's right.
- 47:24Yeah, I would I. Would I mean if you're, if
- 47:26you're, I'm not saying. I.
- 47:28Personally don't do it but. If you're, but also the reason
- 47:31that I brought this up is there was an experiment done.
- 47:34It was done by like myth Busters or something, but they they
- 47:37basically took a bucket of chlorinated water and left it
- 47:40out in the sun. And they took a buck, the same
- 47:42bucket of chlorinated water in terms of volume and mix and
- 47:45everything and put like a small test tube of urine in it.
- 47:48And then the next day they came back and the one that was just
- 47:50chlorine water didn't smell, smelled just like water.
- 47:53And the other one smelled like swimming pool.
- 47:55And what that's made me realize is every time you can smell a
- 47:57swimming pool, it's got piss in it.
- 48:00That is exactly what that is. It's the reaction between the
- 48:02the urine or what's in the urine.
- 48:05I didn't like going to the swimming pool as it was.
- 48:07I know and now I. Will not be the stronger the
- 48:10smell. The more pissed.
- 48:12I'll be honest, I was in fitness first gym the other day and we
- 48:15got taken out of the pool and they were digging for something
- 48:18in the kids lane. No, they were digging.
- 48:22For they were digging for something.
- 48:23Hopefully. Hopefully you had a turd or
- 48:24something, not a child. And then the kid, yeah.
- 48:29And the kid was. Crying.
- 48:30Oh, no, I just, I just walked away.
- 48:34I bet you've been in since, though.
- 48:35I mean, training's training. Got to get those peaks, got to
- 48:39be green. No excuses.
- 48:44Oh my. God, you're stacked.
- 48:45You've got a couple more, at least I.
- 48:46I'm not ready to go. I'm not ready.
- 48:48To go OK, I can do one more. I think this is actually going
- 48:50to upset quite a lot of the diet starts Monday listeners.
- 48:52So listener, in the UK we have a thing called a barbecue and in
- 48:59South Africa you have. I'm so glad I'm wearing this
- 49:01shirt. OK, in South Africa, you have
- 49:03how do you how would you say it? A bra?
- 49:05A bra. OK BBQ, as far as I'm concerned,
- 49:10if we boil it down to what it really is, it's they're the same
- 49:13thing. They're slightly different,
- 49:15slightly different food maybe that you put on there, but it's
- 49:18more than a bra. Yeah.
- 49:20A bra gets so much. And then I watched a video on
- 49:22how to do the best bra and I was like, this is a BBQ.
- 49:25It's the same thing. Like it's, it's a, it's a BBQ.
- 49:29We've had, we've got some music, we've got some bits.
- 49:31I'm a bit nervous to be associated with this.
- 49:35It's about the energy and there's so much associated with
- 49:37the bride, like Spring Rock Rugby.
- 49:39That's why I said I'm glad I'm making this shirt.
- 49:41It's like the community behind the bride, but also because we
- 49:44have quite a big Afrikaans community and like dry and force
- 49:48and the sausage and the meat and the smoke and the Branavan and
- 49:52Coke brown and Coke like that is dry and like it's, it's it's
- 49:57like a vibe. Do you know why?
- 49:59Do you know I mean? I'm going to defend myself.
- 50:00Everything like that. We wouldn't get it because I
- 50:02think you have to be like in it to get it.
- 50:04You have to be there. Yeah, so when you come to South
- 50:06Africa and you go to a bra, you'll be like this isn't a BBQ.
- 50:10OK. That would be my, but you'd have
- 50:12to see it, it's hard to explain. But do you?
- 50:14Do you come to like a British person's garden and go?
- 50:18This is so bad there. You go, yeah, this ain't a
- 50:26bride, but you're not like you're not.
- 50:28They're going, sorry guys, this isn't a BBQ.
- 50:30This is a bride. No.
- 50:31No, no, because it is a bride take OK like coming to your
- 50:34house, having meats on the bride on the.
- 50:37There's always like, a really pale, sunburned British guy,
- 50:41some really horrible bears. Yeah, and it's not actually hot
- 50:45or sunny. Yeah, no, it's just like we've
- 50:47we've got rice holiday so we're outside but.
- 50:50Technically it's the same thing. OK, but also we have, we are
- 50:53privileged with such good meat, like if you have a piece of
- 50:56butterballs from South Africa. You'll be like, this is Bry.
- 50:59Yeah, this is Bry. In the conversation about Bry,
- 51:02the thing, the reason that I know that I am wrong and it was
- 51:04a bit I'm backtracking here, but you said like 3 words about
- 51:09things that you have and I've not known what a single one of
- 51:11the main whatever you just said then didn't know you said
- 51:15another one that was like force and but it wasn't force the.
- 51:18Type of sausage, right? It's like dry.
- 51:20He rolled his. ARM yeah, they did that in South
- 51:22Africa. Think about a German black
- 51:24force. I feel like that's their big
- 51:26sausage. Yeah.
- 51:27So a buttervorce is our big sausage.
- 51:29Nice. And it's nice and thick.
- 51:32Nice. There's going to be so many.
- 51:34You know when I said you have to be there, you know, you know, I
- 51:37said you have to be there. I I think you've really got to
- 51:39be into big sausages. No, but then like you get lamb
- 51:43chops, like lamb good lamb chops, lamb chops.
- 51:46To be there, yeah, I will give that.
- 51:47But you're it's just it's just the vibe, man, because also like
- 51:49to get wood here for a wood Bry is almost impossible.
- 51:52And we obviously have Weber's which?
- 51:55Oh, a Weber BBQ. Yeah, a Weber BBQ.
- 51:57Yeah, yeah, yeah. Some people say Weber, so that's
- 52:01a huge debate. But yeah, so I would say it's
- 52:06more the meaning behind the word than it is they are correlated
- 52:10the same. Yeah.
- 52:11Bry BBQ. OK, cool.
- 52:12Well. I hope that it was a good one
- 52:14too. Yeah, yeah.
- 52:14Yeah, I like that one. What do Americans call it?
- 52:18Grilling, yeah. Grilling, yeah.
- 52:21Smoking. Smoking.
- 52:22No. Smoking is different.
- 52:23Yeah, smoking is like a way to cook.
- 52:24Yeah, it's just grim. Go on, you've loaded.
- 52:29My 1 is, again, it's like stupidly specific to, well, you
- 52:34did lunch CrossFit. I saw that on your strum, so
- 52:36maybe you're a CrossFit for now. So this is going to be so
- 52:39specific for CrossFit coaches and anyone who's worked in a
- 52:43CrossFit gym. But often someone will come to
- 52:45the gym who is not a member of your gym and they're like a drop
- 52:50in. They're just coming.
- 52:51Maybe they're travelling or they just want to try the gym and
- 52:55they'll walk in and I won't recognize them.
- 52:56So I'll go. Hey, how are you?
- 52:58Nice to meet you. My name's Charles.
- 53:00And I'll ask them what their CrossFit experience is and
- 53:02they'll go. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I do CrossFit.
- 53:05I'm like, all right. Where?
- 53:07And they'll they'll instantly go, shit, I shouldn't have lied.
- 53:12I shouldn't have told the CrossFit coach that I did
- 53:14CrossFit. So they start in a gym.
- 53:18You won't know it. I've been, I've been to lots of
- 53:20gyms. I might know it.
- 53:22I'll go it's, it's not in the UK.
- 53:24I'm like, well, I've been to lots of gyms, I might know it
- 53:27and they, they start backtracking.
- 53:28I'm like, well, clearly this person hasn't done CrossFit.
- 53:31Anyway, we start doing the session and it'll be something
- 53:33really specific to CrossFit like handstand push ups or toes to
- 53:36bar or start barbell snatching, something like that.
- 53:39And for sure they've got no idea what they're doing, but they
- 53:42have to now continue up the facade that they've done
- 53:45CrossFit before. And I'm like, look, I've been
- 53:47doing CrossFit since 2016. I can tell pretty much instantly
- 53:52whether or not you've done CrossFit before, even from not
- 53:54seeing you move. If you walk in and you're
- 53:56probably not wearing CrossFit trainers or you wearing
- 53:58something that doesn't look very crossfitty, I'll know you're not
- 54:01doing CrossFit. So what grinds my gears is you
- 54:04coming into the gym and lying about the fact that you do
- 54:06CrossFit. Just be honest.
- 54:08Maybe, maybe my grind, my gear is people lying, liars.
- 54:11I hate liars. That's so broad.
- 54:14You went from so neat to so broad.
- 54:17That was just a massive. Wow.
- 54:19I'm glad I got that off my dress.
- 54:21There's going to be so many CrossFit coaches who just
- 54:24instantly resonate the thing. Is though, like I, I, I get it
- 54:27as someone that turned up for the first time actually and met
- 54:29you, it's like you want to make sure that you have a rapport
- 54:34with the person that's being. So you're obviously going to go
- 54:36up and be like, if you were like, if you don't CrossFit
- 54:37before, I'd be like, yeah, I've done some rowing.
- 54:40Before you'd be like, I've done functional fitness and then I'll
- 54:43go. Would you have experience with
- 54:44gymnastics? And I would have been a lie,
- 54:45because I haven't. OK, well now if you'd gone into
- 54:48a CrossFit gym and you walked in and you went and I said, have
- 54:51you done CrossFit before, you'd be like, no, no, no, I've
- 54:53trained in a CrossFit gym. I've done some functional
- 54:56movement. And I know the hybrid rock star,
- 54:58right? Yeah.
- 54:59Or, or you just say, yeah, I've done a lot of high rocks
- 55:01training in that. I've made done some power cleans
- 55:04or something like that. I have gym experience, but I
- 55:06don't know how to do gymnastics because then for me as a coach,
- 55:09I go safety triage. I can look out for you and be
- 55:12like, hey, you can't do that yet.
- 55:13I'm going to help you out and I'm going to give you some
- 55:15safety precaution scaling options.
- 55:17Rather than being like, yeah, I assume this guy can do a
- 55:19handstand walk. What this, this falls back on
- 55:22lying in fitness or lying about your fitness.
- 55:25It can only go wrong. You can never so free can never
- 55:28go right. Yeah, Yeah.
- 55:29Well CrossFit is quite intimidating as a non
- 55:31crossfitter. I've spoken to a lot of people
- 55:33about that. Like walking into a CrossFit gym
- 55:35you kind of like. So you feel like you have to say
- 55:37you've done it before. Maybe it's a MEEP, maybe I'm
- 55:39intimidating. No, I wouldn't say to you that
- 55:41I've done CrossFit, but like if you came, I would just, yeah, I
- 55:45would definitely say I'd need help.
- 55:46Yeah, but I would also be nervous to say that I think to
- 55:49you because I don't know. I'm trying to picture.
- 55:52I'm trying to picture myself doing it now.
- 55:55No, this this. Is that a me thing or?
- 55:56Hold on, hold on, hold on. This is crying my gears.
- 55:58We don't have to justify, all right?
- 56:00It just we we listen and we whatever, and we appreciate.
- 56:04Yeah. We just move on.
- 56:05If you lie, you're bad. Don't lie.
- 56:08That's what we got from that. Cool.
- 56:10And I'm happy with that. Good.
- 56:12Yeah, great. Have you have you got others
- 56:14that you you want to release? Not for now, not for now.
- 56:16Save them. In which case we're we're going
- 56:18to move on. We've got another thing that is
- 56:21related to Crying My Gears. For those of you that have been
- 56:24listening to the last few episodes and for those of you
- 56:26that have been here for a while, you will know there is a certain
- 56:29thing that has grind has been grinding my gears for a while,
- 56:33which is a specific flavour of something so.
- 56:35This is not grind my gears. This is kind of grind my gears
- 56:38but this has been going on for some time and I've finally
- 56:42managed to retrieve it. So Roscoe, you won't know this,
- 56:46you won't know this. Birthday cake flavoured things
- 56:49has been pissing me off for a while.
- 56:51What flavour is birthday cake? It can be anything.
- 56:55Correct answer. So it's not a flavour.
- 56:57So you might like chocolate cake, I might like Victoria
- 57:01sponge. So birthday cake velvet?
- 57:02Exactly. Great choice.
- 57:04Not the birthday cake flavour. So the fact that you can buy
- 57:07protein bars, protein powders, they're all birthday cake
- 57:09flavour. Piss off, that's not there,
- 57:13right? However, So what?
- 57:14How does it taste like? Well, we're about to find out
- 57:17because Marks and Spencer, I don't know if you know this,
- 57:19Marks and Spencer released a strawberries and cream sandwich
- 57:23this year which has gone viral of course, and we tasted it in
- 57:27the last episode. It tastes pretty good.
- 57:29They have done a fantastic job of timing that with when
- 57:31Wimbledon have yet, which is why they did it.
- 57:33However, Tesco thought, well, this is an opportunity to cash
- 57:36in on the hype, so we're going to make a birthday cake
- 57:39flavoured sandwich which you can get in the meal deal.
- 57:41Now I'm going to give Tesco one piece of credit here.
- 57:46Tesco gave 2 sandwiches per packet.
- 57:47So for those that don't know the M&S packet you only get 1/2 of a
- 57:50sandwich when you get it. However, I have pre cut this.
- 57:53I'm struggling to get out of the Tupperware but I have pre cut
- 57:56this so we can all have our own. Do you need that?
- 57:58And quarter I'm good, I'm good. OK.
- 58:01Would you like to help yourself to I'm you have to wait?
- 58:04This actually looks amazing. I'm so excited.
- 58:07It's. Got a funfetti in it.
- 58:08It's also got jam in it. So this is a birthday cake
- 58:10flavoured sandwich. You can get this in Tesco.
- 58:15Roscoe's doing a great job of showing what's going on.
- 58:17That's the label. Theo the pod dog is now very
- 58:19interested in what's going on, but we're all going to try it.
- 58:22It's it's it's. I bought this from the shop in.
- 58:25The meal deal, it's interesting that you said it looks like a
- 58:27dessert because M&S had like a lawsuit between whether it was
- 58:31sold as a dessert or a sandwich. Because well, I found out more
- 58:34on this. So a cake doesn't, you don't
- 58:37have to pay tax on a cake in the UK, but you have to obviously
- 58:40pay tax on sandwiches. So if they can prove that it is
- 58:44a cake, they don't have to pay tax on every sale.
- 58:46But. But real me this does that bread
- 58:49love yellow? It it does because we are
- 58:51supposed it's supposedly cake bread, so it is cake.
- 58:54He's like, I like. It was cooked like a leg.
- 58:57Yeah. This looks American.
- 58:58Yeah. No, there's some British BBQ,
- 59:01some grill. I'm going to, I'm going to give
- 59:03it a go and we'll report back, but I'm already very heavily
- 59:06against this 321. Because there's never been
- 59:12better ASMR on this podcast for. Sure.
- 59:16That's so dead, I don't rate that at all.
- 59:21The bread definitely is brioche. I don't know.
- 59:24It's it's like it is bread, though.
- 59:26It's. Like cream, cheesy.
- 59:27Yeah, it's like a Tang. Unless it's just been left out
- 59:30from. No, no, no.
- 59:30It's been in the fridge. It's been fine.
- 59:32But this, it's got funfetti in it.
- 59:34It's got like, yeah, sweet cream cheese, cheap jam.
- 59:39And it it actually this is way closer to being bread than the
- 59:42M&S. One, the sprinkles needed to be
- 59:44crunchy. They needed some more texture,
- 59:46but. They've gone soft in the cream
- 59:48sheets. I'm also like, it's sweet bread,
- 59:51It's sweet jam and it's sweet cream.
- 59:53Why? Why would I dislike that?
- 59:55Yeah. I'm.
- 59:56I mean, I'm not. But like, would you buy one?
- 59:59But would you buy? It now I've had it, probably
- 1:00:01not. OK.
- 1:00:02Would you buy it? If we're talking on its own,
- 1:00:05it's like £2.25 in the meal deal.
- 1:00:07It's now £3.85. Let's go put the meal.
- 1:00:08You're asking me in the context of buying a meal deal, because
- 1:00:11when would I ever buy this? Sweet meal, right?
- 1:00:14Yeah. But maybe.
- 1:00:15Buy it on its own? No, no.
- 1:00:17Well, then there's a lose. The meal deal, you get the
- 1:00:19sweet. Ones with my own question.
- 1:00:21Yeah, the meal deal you get the sweet with.
- 1:00:23Right, exactly. Unless you got something savoury
- 1:00:26as the snack to get, this is your main course.
- 1:00:28No, but no one's doing that. You.
- 1:00:30Serve that to me at your BBQ. I wouldn't be upset.
- 1:00:33You'd be like these fucking British people, they think this
- 1:00:37is a this is a bride and they're giving me a birthday cake
- 1:00:39flavour sandwich. But anyway, birthday cake
- 1:00:41flavour things, and we've proven it here, have no place in
- 1:00:44society. They aren't a flavour.
- 1:00:45Either make a chocolate cake flavoured sandwich or make a
- 1:00:48Victoria sponge or even hit the nail on the head red velvet
- 1:00:51sandwich with bang. If anyone wants that final
- 1:00:55quarter, you can have it guys, if you subscribe, we'll pick a
- 1:00:58subscriber this week and we'll send it during the post.
- 1:01:02Now what that brings us to is the last section of this
- 1:01:05podcast, which is the Rocks Game and it is my pleasure to host
- 1:01:09the game this time, which means that actually for the first time
- 1:01:11ever, we have a head to head. This is exciting.
- 1:01:13We have England versus South Africa.
- 1:01:15I kind of feel like we should be playing the national anthem
- 1:01:17before this, but we don't have enough time.
- 1:01:20You've got the shirt on which says everything.
- 1:01:23So we're going to start off. My track record is not looking
- 1:01:25good. We're not going to have buzzer.
- 1:01:27You're going to be able to both say what you think in your own
- 1:01:30time. OK, cool.
- 1:01:31OK, It will be obvious very quickly if one of you is copying
- 1:01:35the other, so don't do that. So we're going to start off
- 1:01:38question one. Listeners, please feel free to
- 1:01:40join in at home. Question one.
- 1:01:43What are the units of VO2 Max? Is it millimeters of oxygen per
- 1:01:50kilogram of body weight per minute?
- 1:01:52Is it milliliters of air per kilogram of body weight?
- 1:01:56Is it liters of oxygen per kilogram of body weight per
- 1:01:59second? Or is it millimeters cubed above
- 1:02:03zone 3 threshold per second? Who gets to go first?
- 1:02:10You can go first, you look quite confident.
- 1:02:12Yeah, well, that's a facade for sure.
- 1:02:15I definitely have my answer. OK, do you wanna do you wanna go
- 1:02:18I. Just steal it.
- 1:02:19From you there I would have said.
- 1:02:21A Well, I just said A. OK, you're both correct.
- 1:02:25It isn't millimetres of oxygen per kilogram that was.
- 1:02:28Legit my reputation on the line. Like all of my clients, I love
- 1:02:31to leave me. Because D was just a
- 1:02:33engineering. Yeah, it very quickly became an
- 1:02:37equation as I was writing it. Something above zone 3 something
- 1:02:40something. In 1995?
- 1:02:43In 1995, South Africa won the Rugby World Cup, correct?
- 1:02:48Who was the captain of that rugby team?
- 1:02:51I'm going to hand this to Charles first.
- 1:02:52Thank God I know his name. You know his name, of course?
- 1:02:57Obviously, yeah. I however do not know his name.
- 1:03:02Have you seen the film Invictus? I haven't, no.
- 1:03:04Oh, that's a shocker. But let me, let me.
- 1:03:07Move you for tonight. Let me explain to you the person
- 1:03:10that I'm envisaging, OK, And as I explained, maybe his name will
- 1:03:14come to me. You've got 20 seconds.
- 1:03:16He's. He's.
- 1:03:17Big. He's wearing a green shirt.
- 1:03:22He has blonde hair. Yeah.
- 1:03:24It's like du Plessis or something that sounds.
- 1:03:31Do you want to give the answer? Well, I'm confusing myself now.
- 1:03:35I know his name man. I want to say I don't want to
- 1:03:39get it wrong. I'm thinking of.
- 1:03:41Current, current France hello. I mean.
- 1:03:44Oh, it's not France. Hello though.
- 1:03:46No, it's not. It's close.
- 1:03:48No, because I know his name. Man, I'm getting confused.
- 1:03:50Oh, hello. A classic one.
- 1:03:51I'll give him the point because he said he knows it.
- 1:03:53Yeah, you know what's the answer?
- 1:03:55It's Francois. Francois Nope.
- 1:04:02It begins with. It begins with P.
- 1:04:04They're going to shoot me Francois Pinot.
- 1:04:07That is 0 points to either of you, I'm afraid.
- 1:04:10If anyone from South Africa listen.
- 1:04:11However, this could play into your favour here.
- 1:04:12Charles. You're, you're, you still won
- 1:04:15one. Roscoe, you're going to have to
- 1:04:18answer this question first. England 2003, They won the
- 1:04:22world. I already know it.
- 1:04:23Who is the England captain that year?
- 1:04:26He doesn't know it. You now you know how I felt, OK?
- 1:04:30But I've never explained the guy that I'm thinking.
- 1:04:32Yeah, yeah, yeah, he's, he's big.
- 1:04:34Yeah, he's. Big.
- 1:04:36He's tall. He's Burnett.
- 1:04:38He's what? Burnett.
- 1:04:38Yeah, he's tall. It wasn't Johnny Wilkinson.
- 1:04:44If it helps. No it wasn't.
- 1:04:46That doesn't help. That was a weird flex.
- 1:04:48Was he #8? No, no, OK.
- 1:04:52He was number 45. You can go through all the
- 1:04:55numbers if you want. Charles, do you want to give the
- 1:04:58answer? Martin Johnson?
- 1:04:59It was Martin Johnson. It's currently 21 that.
- 1:05:03Was big, so OK, Steven. Funeral.
- 1:05:05No that. Was big for the program.
- 1:05:07Yeah, that's kind of OK. So the Olympics hasn't always
- 1:05:11featured the triathlon. In fact, the first triathlon
- 1:05:15appeared in which Olympic Games. We get no options.
- 1:05:23No options. I was going to say it because
- 1:05:25let's it's every four years. You got to work out.
- 1:05:27Yeah, who's going first? Does either one of you want to
- 1:05:30go first? I.
- 1:05:31Have some ideas? You technically have the
- 1:05:33advantage right now, so you should go first.
- 1:05:35I think we are go go first, but I'm just saying I think I know
- 1:05:39the place. I was going to say I have a
- 1:05:41place in mind I don't. Know yeah, that's where I'm at
- 1:05:43as well. I'm going to say 2000 Sydney.
- 1:05:50OK, what are you going? For and I don't know if Sydney
- 1:05:52hosted it in 2000. It was 2000 a year.
- 1:05:55Yeah, I was. So I'm going to go it's.
- 1:05:57Definitely. It was definitely a year.
- 1:05:59I want to go Beijing you. Want to go Beijing?
- 1:06:01Was that 2008? It was, yeah.
- 1:06:05It was 2000 Sydney. Spot on.
- 1:06:07It's currently 31. OK, how'd?
- 1:06:10You get that so spot on. OK, right.
- 1:06:14I'm I'm trying to play it cool. OK, so tough.
- 1:06:17I'm gonna, I'm gonna. I'm so child.
- 1:06:19I'm gonna give you I'm gonna give you multiple choice on this
- 1:06:22one. OK, so the current full distance
- 1:06:26Iron Man world record for a man is one of the following.
- 1:06:33I'm gonna pull one back here. OK, Do you know it?
- 1:06:36Not that well, but I'll know it when you say.
- 1:06:38OK. And Messi's gone.
- 1:06:39Like, really? Specific is it?
- 1:06:40Is it 7 hours, 12 minutes and 21 seconds?
- 1:06:47I know the, I know the athlete as well.
- 1:06:49Is it 7 hours, 20 minutes and 21 seconds?
- 1:06:55Is it 7 hours, 28 minutes and 7 seconds?
- 1:07:00Or is it 7 hours, 21 minutes and 12 seconds?
- 1:07:04That's a curveball, because that's one minute above B.
- 1:07:11Charles has a rule with multiple choice.
- 1:07:12It's a. Problem.
- 1:07:13Don't tell him my rule. Don't tell him my rule.
- 1:07:15The problem is, I thought it was eight.
- 1:07:18I thought it. Was 8.
- 1:07:19What's the Christian Blumenfeld? Sure.
- 1:07:23I don't think it is because I thought he he just broke, he set
- 1:07:26the European. Yeah, because there.
- 1:07:28But there was a day where they actually set out to break the
- 1:07:30world record. Red Bull hosted the Oh, really?
- 1:07:33Well, I'm see how it would have been.
- 1:07:34Yeah. He's a freak, isn't?
- 1:07:36He is a freak, Yeah. He's just winning everything.
- 1:07:38It's nice now. And yeah, 20 days, yeah, I'm
- 1:07:40going to say. Wait, you go first.
- 1:07:43OK, I'll go first. I I didn't think that it was
- 1:07:46going to be lower than 720. So when you said 7:20 and 7:21,
- 1:07:49that threw me off because 712 all of.
- 1:07:55These times, by the way, are absurd.
- 1:07:56Yeah, it was just a joke. Yeah, but it's possible.
- 1:07:59I mean, the other day someone did a 726 so.
- 1:08:02Oh, that oh, maybe C isn't the option.
- 1:08:08I'll just go shit, OK, I'll just go.
- 1:08:13A 712 is possible 712. I'm going C, you're going C So
- 1:08:16Charles rule, by the way, if you don't know, it's just always go
- 1:08:19C if in that unfortunately it was D, it's 7 hours, 21 minutes
- 1:08:23and 12 seconds. I should have.
- 1:08:24Known that. OK.
- 1:08:26So zero point there. It's still 31.
- 1:08:28We've got two more questions. Oh.
- 1:08:30It's all to play for shit. OK, the flag known as Rainbow
- 1:08:35nation, well, that's what it's been referred to as well.
- 1:08:39In my research for South Africa, the flag changed.
- 1:08:43It used to have the Union Jack on the flag in South Africa, but
- 1:08:46what year did it change? You better be following this up
- 1:08:51with some British trivia. Nope, I'm going to give you a
- 1:08:54number. I'm not even that.
- 1:08:58Would you want? Do you want multiple choice?
- 1:09:00I need multiple choice, but I've got I've got an idea in my head.
- 1:09:03OK197219941983 or 2001. OK, you can go first again as as
- 1:09:16the as the South African. 1994. I was also going for the 90s so
- 1:09:21I had to go in 94, but that just makes it look like I'm.
- 1:09:24Coming now, you're both correct. That's 41.
- 1:09:27So what we're going to do is we're going to we're going to do
- 1:09:30the sporting thing and we're going to say you've technically
- 1:09:33won Charles, because at this point you can't pull back the.
- 1:09:354/1 he can have the point. Well, give him this is 4/2.
- 1:09:38So give him credibility as a South Africa to give him some
- 1:09:41priorities. Stephen.
- 1:09:43Yeah. Yeah, it's 32.
- 1:09:44OK, we'll make this last one all to play for.
- 1:09:47Right. Agreed.
- 1:09:48Yeah, OK. But.
- 1:09:49Everyone knows that I want. What we will do.
- 1:09:53So which of the two countries, the United Kingdom and South
- 1:09:58Africa, Rural South Africa has the highest bungee jump spot.
- 1:10:04South Africa. That was confident.
- 1:10:07Yeah. OK.
- 1:10:08Are you both agreeing on South Africa?
- 1:10:10No. OK.
- 1:10:11You're going to say say no. No, no, I'm not agreeing yet.
- 1:10:14OK. I just need some more time to
- 1:10:16process it because this feels was that was that all of the
- 1:10:19information you were giving? Yep, That feels like a trick
- 1:10:22question because in my head immediately I'll go for sure it
- 1:10:25has to be South Africa. But then I feel like it's just a
- 1:10:29trick question and there has to be somewhere in the UK where
- 1:10:32it's like. I feel like you just have to
- 1:10:34back. Your If you can, I will give you
- 1:10:36a bonus point to each of you if you are right in the 1st place,
- 1:10:40but if you can also name where it is or how tall it is, I doubt
- 1:10:44you'll do that bit but. If you can name where it is,
- 1:10:46Like are you talking country or province or place?
- 1:10:49The actual place like place name.
- 1:10:52You put this into maps and you'd rock up at the bungee.
- 1:10:56OK, that's that's that's made me think that it's more South
- 1:10:59Africa. OK.
- 1:11:02But I can play it tactically now.
- 1:11:04You can because if we're all both wrong, I don't, I don't
- 1:11:10like to play it safely. I'll if it's it's, I reckon it's
- 1:11:14I'm going with my guy. It's it's in the UK.
- 1:11:16OK. Any guesses as to where?
- 1:11:19No, we don't have to. Guess we don't have to try,
- 1:11:21yeah? OK.
- 1:11:23And you're sticking with South Africa?
- 1:11:24Yeah, OK. For sure, You're right with
- 1:11:26South Africa. The name is because it didn't.
- 1:11:30It's just it's by Pittsburgh there.
- 1:11:33Hello. Yeah, it's off a bridge.
- 1:11:35The high? You're going to Google it.
- 1:11:37That's where it's where I it's by where I found this.
- 1:11:40OK, right. So it's off bridge.
- 1:11:43It's I've written it down, but my writing wasn't very good.
- 1:11:46It's like Blackens bridge. Blackens bridge.
- 1:11:49Well, I'll show you afterwards, but 216 meters is that Bungie
- 1:11:54height? The highest in the UK is at
- 1:11:56Cheddar Gorge and it's 122 meters, nearly half the height
- 1:12:02of the the tallest in South. Africa.
- 1:12:03You wanted to say South Africa? Yeah, I did.
- 1:12:05Is that 3 all? Well, technically speaking, we
- 1:12:08said it was all to play for on the last question and you got it
- 1:12:10right, which means that you have taken the win.
- 1:12:12When it comes down to a swimming race.
- 1:12:15OK, so that brings us to the end of the Rocks Game and actually
- 1:12:20nicely brings us towards the end of the episode.
