- 0:00The pattern you can see, but you can't stop.
- 0:02She'd been in therapy for seven years, could name every pattern, every trigger, every attachment style, and she sat down across me and said four words, nothing has actually changed.
- 0:17Nothing has actually changed.
- 0:18If you ever felt that, then stay with me.
- 0:21I've been working on the level of the body, not just minds, for almost two decades now.
- 0:27Hundreds of people, and this is the thing I see every single time.
- 0:33You don't have an understanding problem, you have a location problem.
- 0:37In about two minutes, I'm going to show you something in your own breath that will prove this.
- 0:42In your body, right now.
- 0:44But first, let me show you why.
- 0:47In this video, I'm going to show you three things.
- 0:50First, why knowing your patterns doesn't free you from them.
- 0:53There's a piece of neuroscience behind that.
- 0:56it, you'll never blame yourself for the knowing doing gap again. The second, that live breath
- 1:03thing I just mentioned, not theory, a 10 second experience in your own body. The third, the sixth
- 1:10stage cycle that keeps you stuck. I see it in almost everyone I work with. And stage four is
- 1:17the one almost nobody recognizes in themselves. If you ever said the words, I know what I need to do,
- 1:22I just can't seem to do it. This is for you. I had someone sit down with me last month,
- 1:27incredibly smart, self-aware, could tell her attachment style, her ACE score, her mother's
- 1:34trauma history in clinical detail. And she looks at me and said, I understand everything and nothing
- 1:40shifts. She's not alone. And here's why. The reason understanding hasn't freed you is not a
- 1:46you problem, it's a location problem. There's a researcher called Joseph Ledoux at NYU who studied
- 1:53how the brain processes threat. He found your amygdala, the alarm system, fires in 12 milliseconds,
- 2:0112. Your prefrontal cortex, the part that thinks and reasons and makes conscious choices,
- 2:08takes 10 times longer to even switch on. The research, Joseph Ledoux, The Emotional Brain,
- 2:16Two pathways, the fast path, the telomeres to the amygdala, 12 milliseconds.
- 2:21The slow path through the cortex.
- 2:23The amygdala activates survival responses before conscious awareness.
- 2:27Which means that moment where someone asks you for something and you hear yourself say,
- 2:33of course, no problem.
- 2:35Before your brain could even form the word, no.
- 2:39That's 12 milliseconds of neuroscience.
- 2:41Your body decided before your mind had a chance to intervene.
- 2:46Basil van der Kolk spent decades at Harvard studying exactly this.
- 2:49His central finding, survival patterns are stored as physical sensations, not stories.
- 2:55They sit behind conscious thought.
- 2:57Basil van der Kolk, The Body Keeps Core, 2014.
- 3:01Survival patterns stored in the body as sensory and physical sensations, not verbal memories.
- 3:07Cannot be assessed through talking or thinking alone.
- 3:10Your patterns don't live in your head.
- 3:12That's why all the head work hasn't shifted them.
- 3:16So here's the thing I promise. Right now, without changing anything, just notice your breath.
- 3:22Don't breathe better. Don't change anything. Just notice. Pay attention. Feel. Most people I work
- 3:30with, and I've been doing this for almost two decades now, across thousands of people and
- 3:35hundreds of sessions have the same pattern. Short inhale, long exhale. Tiny sip in, big push out.
- 3:46a breathing problem, that's a life pattern. A short inhale, long exhale. You're literally giving more
- 3:52than you take in. Every single breath. Your body's rehearsing, over-give, under-receive thousands of
- 3:59times a day. And no amount of understanding why you do it will change the breath. The breath changes
- 4:05when the body gets a different experience, not a different idea. And no amount of understanding
- 4:10why you do it will change. The breezes at dawn have secrets to tell you. Don't go back to sleep.
- 4:16You must ask for what you really want. Don't go back to sleep. Rumi. That's the real work. Not
- 4:24more information, not another book, just dropping out of your head into your body. Asking for what
- 4:30you really want instead of going back to sleep. Quick thing before I go deeper. If that breath
- 4:35thing just landed, I'm running a free live masterclass on Tuesday the 24th of February
- 4:42called The Pattern You Can See But You Can't Stop. In it, I'll take you through a live practice,
- 4:48not just theory, an actual experience of what it feels like when the patterns start to shift in
- 4:53your body. Comment Awaken below and I'll send you the link or in the description. Okay, let's keep
- 4:59going because I haven't told you the most important part yet. Pete Walker, Complex PTSD,
- 5:05describing 2013. The fawn response. The fourth survival mechanism alongside fight, flight,
- 5:13freeze. Fawn. Fawn types seek safety by merging with the wishes, needs, and demands of the others.
- 5:21There's a name for what I just showed you. Pete Walker called it fawn response. It is a fourth
- 5:26survival mechanism. Not fight, not flight, not freeze. Fawn. It's when your nervous system
- 5:35that the safest thing to do is to please the person in front of you,
- 5:39agree with them, anticipate their needs, shape yourself around their mood.
- 5:43Because when you were small, that's what kept things calm.
- 5:47That's what kept you safe.
- 5:49And now, decades later, your conscious mind knows better.
- 5:53But your body, your body is still running the old program every single time.
- 5:58Here's how it plays out.
- 5:59The moment comes, your mother calls, or your partner pushes,
- 6:03or your boss asks for more and your body takes over.
- 6:06The jaws tighten, the breath goes shallow,
- 6:10the same short inhale, long exhale.
- 6:13And before the conscious mind even forms the word, no.
- 6:18The mouth has already said, of course, no problem.
- 6:21This is the knowing doing gap.
- 6:24It's not a willpower problem, it's a location problem.
- 6:27The pattern lives in the body
- 6:29and all the head work in the world can't reach it there.
- 6:33And what happens is this cycle, six stages.
- 6:36I see it in almost everyone.
- 6:38Be honest with yourself about which one you're in right now.
- 6:41Stage one, you overperform.
- 6:44You say yes to everything.
- 6:46Your shoulders climb towards your ears and you don't even notice.
- 6:49You're the helper, the strong one, the one that holds it all together.
- 6:54That's the fawn response, wearing a professional outfit.
- 6:57Stage two, you crash.
- 7:00The back pain, the insomnia, the exhaustion that sleep doesn't fix.
- 7:05Your body is saying what your mouth won't.
- 7:08Stage three, you self-criticize.
- 7:10Instead of hearing the crash as a message, you hear it as failure.
- 7:15Why can't I just handle this?
- 7:17And here's what I always ask.
- 7:19When did beating yourself up ever work?
- 7:22Name one time.
- 7:23You can't because it doesn't.
- 7:26Stage four, you hide.
- 7:30You cancel the plans.
- 7:32You scroll.
- 7:33Start to numb out.
- 7:34And here's why this stage is one nobody recognizes.
- 7:37Because from the outside, it looks like self-care.
- 7:42You call it recharging.
- 7:45But you're not recharging.
- 7:47You're having a breakdown.
- 7:48And there's a difference.
- 7:50Stage five, brief awareness.
- 7:53A moment of clarity of, I need to change this.
- 7:56And you mean it.
- 7:57Genuinely.
- 7:59This is the moment you buy the books, or you sign up for the course, or you write in your journal at 2am.
- 8:06Stage 6, straight back to stage 1.
- 8:10Because the inside was real, but nothing shifted in the body.
- 8:13The mind had a moment, the nervous system didn't.
- 8:17And the cycle starts again.
- 8:19If you saw yourself in that, you're not alone.
- 8:22And you're not failing.
- 8:23You're trying to think your way out of something that lives deeper than thought.
- 8:28put it simply, the greatest damage done by neglect, trauma, or emotional loss is not the
- 8:34immediate pain they inflict, but the long-term distortions they induce in a way a developing
- 8:39child will continue to interpret the world and their situation in it. Gabo Mate, The Myth of
- 8:46Normal, 2022. Trauma is not what happens to you, but what happens inside you. The body's
- 8:54interpretation of early experience creates the patterns that runs for decades. You didn't choose
- 9:00the pattern, the pattern chose you before you had a vote. Basel-Vander-Kolcon treatment, body-based
- 9:06approaches, yoga, breath work, EMDR, somatic experiencing, consistently more effective for
- 9:13survival patterns than talk therapy alone. The body needs to learn the danger has passed.
- 9:19So thinking about it doesn't work, what does?
- 9:21You have to give the body a new experience,
- 9:24not a new explanation, a new experience.
- 9:27Remember the breath pattern I showed you?
- 9:29Short inhale, long exhale, giving more than you take in.
- 9:34That pattern doesn't change because you understand it.
- 9:36It changes when your body has a different experience.
- 9:39When you actually let yourself take a full breath in,
- 9:43when you practice receiving instead of just giving.
- 9:46Vandercolk research showed that body-based practices, yoga, breath work, movement,
- 9:51change these patterns in a way that talking about them simply doesn't.
- 9:55Because you're working at a level where the pattern actually lives.
- 9:59It's the difference between reading a book about swimming and getting in the water.
- 10:04You can read every book on swimming ever written,
- 10:07and your body will not know how to swim until it gets in the water.
- 10:10This is why you can have 20 insights in a month and nothing changes.
- 10:15Insights happen in the mind, and the patterns live in the body.
- 10:19And nobody told you that these are two different languages.
- 10:23Knowing others is intelligence.
- 10:25Knowing yourself is true wisdom.
- 10:28Mastering others is strength.
- 10:29Mastering yourself is true power.
- 10:32Lao Tzu.
- 10:33Lao Tzu drew that line thousands of years ago.
- 10:36Between knowing yourself and mastering yourself.
- 10:40Two different skills entirely.
- 10:42And most of personal development stops at knowing.
- 10:45and then blames you when knowing doesn't create change.
- 10:48So let me bring this together.
- 10:49You're not broken because you can't stop your patterns.
- 10:52You're dealing with something
- 10:54that was never a thinking problem to begin with.
- 10:56Ledoux showed us the body reacts in 12 milliseconds
- 11:00before thinking even starts.
- 11:02Van der Kolk showed us survival patterns
- 11:05are stored in physical sensations, not thoughts.
- 11:09Walker named the phone response,
- 11:10the mechanism that makes you say yes,
- 11:12even when everything in you is screaming no.
- 11:16And Mate pointed out that the damage isn't what happened to you,
- 11:19it's what's happening inside you.
- 11:22Six stage cycle, overperforming, crash, criticize, hide,
- 11:28brief awareness, repeat.
- 11:31Isn't a character flaw.
- 11:33It's what happens when you try to think your way out of a body pattern.
- 11:36And your breath is the evidence.
- 11:38Short inhale, long exhale.
- 11:42you live every single breath. Change doesn't come from more understanding. It comes from giving the
- 11:49body a different experience. I've watched it happen hundreds of times. Someone stops overriding their
- 11:54body. They take one genuine breath. They let the mask slip for one moment. Something begins to shift.
- 12:01Not in their thinking, but in their chest, their shoulders, their jaws, and the body starts to come
- 12:08back to balance because they stop fighting it. If any of this landed, the masterclass is on
- 12:12Tuesday, the 24th of February. It's where we go from understanding to experience. It's free,
- 12:18it's live, and it's for people who've done all the head work and are ready for something different,
- 12:23something powerful. Comment Awaken below or click the link in the description. I want to leave you
- 12:29with something from Lao Tzu. At the center of your being, you have the answer. You know who you are.
- 12:35You know what you want. You already know. Your body has been telling you. The question was never
- 12:42you know the pattern.
- 12:43The question is, are you ready to let yourself feel it
- 12:47instead of just think about it?
- 12:49If you wanna go deeper, my next video breaks down
- 12:52the four layers of exhaustion nobody talks about,
- 12:55especially layer three,
- 12:56which is where your energy is actually going.
- 12:58It's not what you think.
- 12:59That one's right here.
