Transcript
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: Hello everyone, and welcoming to Hey Hannah.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: I'm so happy to be back.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: I thank you guys so much for dealing with the ups and downs that have come with my life recently.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: I really appreciate anyone who is listening to this podcast.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: But really, I've been hot and cold, and I don't mean to be, like I am a consistent queen in normal life.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: But let me tell you, life has not been normal.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: That sentence was barely English.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: That's where I'm at.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, where do I even begin?
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: Last time I talked to you guys, I was just like, vacation woo-hoo.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: And obviously vacation's great, but did it reverse my child's sleep patterns?
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: Yes, it did.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: I feel like this fall is flying.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: I'm upset that it's already like mid-October.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: It's not cool, unfair.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: And in Wisconsin, here we're about to hit what everyone's calling the first official frost.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: Right now, as I'm recording this, it's like a beautiful, sunshiny, 70-degree day.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: These are the days that are worth living.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: These are like the best days, but it's happening quickly.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: Like the leaves are dropping.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: And before I know it, like half of the trees are bare already.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, what?
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: How?
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: It's still sort of warm out.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: Like, what are we talking about?
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: But these next few days are about to bring a ton of rain and just like.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: Anyways, why am I talking about the weather?
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: How did I get here?
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: Let me tell you guys what's been going on.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: I haven't slept.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: I haven't slept.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: I actually I didn't do the podcast last week because I didn't sleep at all last week.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: And I was like, I don't know how I'm supposed to talk to anyone about anything and make sense.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: And today I feel the same, although my body has adjusted.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: Now I have had three cups of coffee.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: But you guys, I have a seven-month-old.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: Andy's seven months.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: It is the best coolest thing ever that she's seven months, and every stage gets better and better and better.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: But what's not getting better is her sleep.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: It's driving me boggers.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: You guys, I need like a textbook.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: Bring back textbooks.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: I can't keep asking ChatGPT for all of this advice because the amount of times they tell me something and then I come, I come correct with a suggestion or like a hey, yeah, that's not gonna work because if you pay attention, I said this earlier.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: And then they're like, oh, you're right.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: Actually, you should do it this way.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, why?
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: I need a textbook guideline.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: Peter and I looked at each other at, I think it was around five o'clock in the morning last night when we had been up for a few hours trying to rock her to sleep for the fourth time last night.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: We looked at each other and we were like, we need a sleep expert.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: It's just that time.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: We need someone to seriously come in and look at our personal life and tell us what the heck we're doing wrong because something's just not working.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: I don't know what it is.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: I talked, I feel like I talked about this a lot, but I did like an official sleep training thing a few months ago.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: And I thought it was great.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: Things seemed to be working.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: We did the taking care of babies method, which is like a gentle cry-da, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: And I was so rah-rah.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: I was like, this worked for us.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: This is great for our family.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: I felt like I was getting a little bit of my life back.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: I was starting to hear the birds chirp in the morning.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: And it was really nice to have that quiet time with Peter again.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: Like once we put the baby to sleep, it's like, oh, oh my God, I forgot what life was like.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: But our recent travels, I think, have totally sidelined her sleep.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: And everyone says they haven't forgotten, they haven't forgotten.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: You just have to like give them a gentle nudge.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: Well, we got back from another quick trip to Florida, and I we did the whole sleep training method again.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: I'm like, let's start from scratch, let's go back to the basics and do what we know we need to do for taking care of babies' method.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: And now she's just like not having it.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: I don't know how to explain it, but she's just not doing it.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: She's just not falling asleep on her own.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: She wants me to hold her all the time.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: I could talk in circles about this, and I'm not gonna do that.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: But I really could talk in circles about how we've gotten so backwards from where we were just what feels like a month ago with her sleep.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: The naps are bad, the nighttime sleep is bad.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: I find myself just putting her in the car and driving around in circles just to get her to sleep because she'll eventually fall asleep in a car and she won't do that anywhere else in the house.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: So, yeah, that's the update on that.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: So if I'm not making sense today, I just need a little grace.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: If today I'm speaking another language and you're like, what is she talking about?
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: No, you don't.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: I haven't gotten much sleep.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: And I know it's so lame to talk about not getting sleep because everybody goes through these seasons, right?
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: Like whether you are in a season of serious work, whether you're in a season of just anxiousness or change and you're overthinking everything.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: Sometimes we just go through seasons where we're not sleeping well.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, whatever.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: I try not to think about it in the morning.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: Like once it's morning, just give me my coffee and it's a great day.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: Let's not discuss what happened in the night.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: Daytime is for happiness, and I'm trying to get better at this.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: Nighttime, Hannah, can be really down, really dark, really negative.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: Daytime, Hannah, I'm like, I don't want to hear it.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: Especially if the sun is out.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: I'm like, we gotta embrace this day.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: We gotta try to have a good day.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: All that being said, it does get a little fuzzy.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: Like my nighttime energy definitely bleeds into my days lately because I'm so I'm so stuck in this like groundhog's day cycle.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: I'm like, when am I gonna enjoy life again?
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: When am I gonna have fun?
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: And this is what brings me to today's topic.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: I want to talk about the idea of having fun again.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: Because I feel like as a society, and especially as women, we are so self-aware.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: Like, so self-aware to a point that it's it's actually painful.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: And I feel like we've stopped being ourselves.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: Like we're consistently observing ourselves from the outside, wondering how we're perceived, what it looks like.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: And I think I'm overthinking everything in life because I'm so exhausted, right?
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: I don't know if you guys do this too, but like when I don't sleep, there's two things I do more of.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: Number one, eat.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: I eat so much when I'm not sleeping.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: Like constant carboholic.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: I need all the energy I can get.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: And I just let myself do it.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: And number two, I can't stop overthinking.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: Like my anxiousness goes into overdrive when I'm underslept.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: But I feel like we're constantly wondering how we're gonna be perceived, how's something gonna land, whether we're being a little embarrassing or whether someone's gonna totally misunderstand what we're saying.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: I feel like sometimes I'm so preoccupied by the optics of what I'm doing that I'm not actually enjoying what I'm doing anymore.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: Does that make any sense?
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: And because winter is coming, I am demanding that I knock this off right now.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: Like I'm demanding that we go back to being in a silly goose mood all the time because it's the best way to live life.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: And obviously, I'm not talking about like work and serious things that need your full undivided attention.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: I'm talking about those silly little moments in life where you feel like you should be having fun, but you're looking at everything with a microscope or a fine-tooth comb.
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: But, anyways, before we get into all of this, let's do a really quick TV update because I have to watch this on TV.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: Let me tell you.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: I got things to say.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: First and foremost, the best show on television right now, Dancing with the Stars.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: I cannot get over it.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: I sang it last time.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: I'm obsessed with it.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: I love the show so much.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: I think that there are two things that make Dancing with the Stars the greatest show on TV right now.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: Number one is the fact that it's live.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: I miss live television.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: That sense of watching something at the same time everybody else in America is watching it.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: You just can't get better than that.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: Remember when Twitter started, and that's what we all did.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: Like we'd watch the Super Bowl and you'd sit on Twitter.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: I miss those days sometimes.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: Dancing with the stars brings back that energy.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: Now I'm definitely not sitting on Twitter, but it's the same effect.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: I also, as someone who's worked in television for years, I also just love watching a live television production because they're so much fun to see the optics of the camera changes and to read into what the hosts are doing and how they're navigating and driving the ship.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: It's fun for me.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: It's funny, I was texting with one of my best friends, Kathleen, and she was saying how she doesn't care at all about the packages of the show.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: She's only watching the dancing.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, what?
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: I'm only watching the packages.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: I heard somebody else say this, and I agree.
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: It should be called packages of the stars because that's all I'm paying attention to.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: I want them to win me over with the packages.
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: Like, I want to get to know their personality.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: I want to hear how they've been challenged that week, how they've overcome it, what this reminds them of in their childhood.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: Like, tell me all about you.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: I want to learn more.
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: I care less about how good of a performer they are, and I care more about how they're selling themselves that week in the package.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: I wonder if I'm alone in this.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: Like, do you guys feel that same way?
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: Please let me know.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: But yeah, such a fun show.
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: I think I started listing reasons why it was a good show.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: I forgot.
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: The second reason is because it's a show you can watch with everyone in your family.
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: It reminds me of The Bachelor back in the day.
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's just that I've aged and The Bachelor has not aged well, I think.
- 9:09SPEAKER_00: But back in the day, specifically when my husband was on it, actually, I think that was like when it peaked.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: Um, it was a show you would watch with everyone, and it was so fun.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: You felt like all of America was watching it with you, but you could also watch it with like your mom and your sister and your friends and like your grandparents, like all generations sort of had a fun little opinion on it, you know.
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: Dancing with the stars gets the same energy.
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: You could just have it on with the family, and it's great.
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: Peter and I are staying with his parents right now, and it's the best show to have on.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: Like outside of football, it's the best thing to have on where we're all watching it.
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: We get so into it.
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: I told them, because we're in the process of getting a house, and I was like, when we get our house, you guys have to still come over to watch Dancing with the Stars with us.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: The other show I've been really into this season is Real Housewives of New York, the new new one.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: I keep talking about the show, and I'm like, why is nobody talking about it?
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: Why is nobody watching the show?
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: I think it's so good to the fact that I was actually upset that I was fully caught up.
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: I wanted to keep watching it.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: I really, really like the new cast members on this show.
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: I feel like they bring a different energy to the mix.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: But I have things to say.
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: So if you haven't caught up yet, this probably won't make any sense.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: And I'm just gonna lay into how I feel with all of the casts.
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: So this might seem completely irrelevant to you if you don't watch, but just bear with me.
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: Carol is great.
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: She's timeless.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: I actually love her energy on the show.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: She's bringing back the sort of like non-desperado housewife energy.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: And I think with all the new cast members of New York, we've gotten a lot of like fame-hungry people.
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: Carol doesn't seem that she's interested in that.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: You're getting like classic New Yorker vibes, her switching her car over.
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: I love to see it.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: I love that she's driving this like old, dusty cheap.
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: And she's just a real authentic New Yorker.
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: She's lived there for decades.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: She stayed in the same apartment.
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: I love seeing the inner workings of her.
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: She also, I think I said this last time, but she lived like a block away from me in the West Village.
- 11:03SPEAKER_00: I used to see her all the time.
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: And so whenever they show her block, I'm like, oh my God, my old street.
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: Like, I just I love that area.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: I think she's really cool.
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: And I think her cool factor has only increased over time because she really doesn't care about any of the other crap that the women are talking about.
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: Secondly, and oppositely, I think Jessel is really hard to watch now.
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: I think she is so lost in the sauce of being like Miss Fashion and Miss Housewife.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: Like she wants to be known as the fashion girly so desperately that she doesn't realize that it just seems a little inauthentic.
- 11:38SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: I just like the whole popcorn ceiling thing really rubbed me the wrong way.
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: I thought that was not nice.
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: Making fun of Daisy's popcorn ceiling.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: Asking Carol a bunch of really ridiculous questions about her late friend calling her in a fashion trend.
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: I just think she's totally lost to the sauce.
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: She has gone too far into this Hollywood world and she's like sort of lost track of where she is.
- 12:03SPEAKER_00: The women sitting around and talking about how that island that they're on is a dumb.
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: To me, it's like so insane.
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: I'm like, are you guys okay?
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: Like, what planet are you on?
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: And I love that Carol was the only one to wear jeans and a sweater to go sit down at that dinner.
- 12:19SPEAKER_00: And the other women were complaining about we can't eat in a pool in our gowns.
- 12:23SPEAKER_00: It's like, well, Doug, don't wear a gown to dinner.
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: Like, what are you doing?
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: Again, I feel like Carol was the only one who was just maintaining any level of normalcy and was not trying to be TV Carol.
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: She was just being like normal New Yorker Carol.
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: But yeah, I think Jess was giving mean girl energy, and I just don't love it.
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: I don't love it.
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: I like Daisy, but I had the same vibes.
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: She's giving slightly mean girl.
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: But outside of just talking about everyone's personalities, I've been enjoying it.
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: I like the trip they're on.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: I love seeing this fabulous island.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: I like getting to know these new girls.
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: I'm interested in the plot, and that's more interesting than I've been in New York in a long time.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: I can't wait for the golden life.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: Is anyone else gonna watch that?
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: The one with Sonia and Ramona and all of the OG New York Housewives?
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: That one will be fun.
- 13:09SPEAKER_00: Oh, speaking of OG, I finished the what's it called?
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: The Housewives 20 Years show, the ultimate girls' trip where they're traveling all around the country.
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: It was fun, but totally not necessary to watch.
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: I did not need to watch it all.
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: I watched this when I was sort of nap trapped, and it was a great thing to have on.
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: But if you're looking for something to watch, I don't think this should be at the top of your list.
- 13:32SPEAKER_00: It's it's definitely a trip down memory lane with all OG Housewives moments, but it's a little too shticky, and everyone was just competing with everyone about who was the most iconic one and blah, blah, blah.
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: Fun to watch and fun to see all the old moments and everyone interact, but that's about it.
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: Definitely a fun change of pace.
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: Oh, we finally finished Chad Powers.
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: I can't believe that show was only six episodes long.
- 13:57SPEAKER_00: It needs to be longer.
- 13:58SPEAKER_00: It's such a good show.
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: Peter and I have been watching that one for a while.
- 14:02SPEAKER_00: We actually watched it with his parents too.
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: They love it as well.
- 14:05SPEAKER_00: I just loved it.
- 14:06SPEAKER_00: I don't even think it's been formally renewed for a third season, but like I need them to get on it.
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: I need them to be filming, I need the production to be done.
- 14:14SPEAKER_00: I'm already ready to catch the last season.
- 14:17SPEAKER_00: They did announce that the third season would be the final season.
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: So, like, obviously, the plot's gonna get a little heavy, but it's cute.
- 14:22SPEAKER_00: It's a good show.
- 14:23SPEAKER_00: It ended on a good note.
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: I won't spoil anything.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: But if you need a good laugh and something that's not serious at all, it's a perfect choice.
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: There's so much other TV that I'd watch.
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: Like, what should I talk about next?
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna run through some of this traitors for normal people.
- 14:38SPEAKER_00: I don't even know what it's called, but you know what I'm talking about.
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: The traitors that's not celebrities.
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: It's fun.
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: I'm a few episodes in, not fully caught up, but I really like the cast.
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: And it's amazing how easy it is to get sucked into that show.
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: The game playing is just great.
- 14:53SPEAKER_00: The only hard part was I started getting really interested in a few plot lines, and then some of the people in the plot line I liked have been eliminated.
- 15:03SPEAKER_00: So I'm like, oh, well, who am I gonna like now?
- 15:05SPEAKER_00: That part was a little hard, but it's been on my, it's been in the back of my mind that I need to finish that show because it's just an easy watch.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: The round table is the only fun part.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: I will say that.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: Like anything where they do the competitions, I'm sort of not paying attention.
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: Like I'm on my phone scrolling.
- 15:19SPEAKER_00: I find it a little boring, but the round table is when it gets really fun.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: The movie The Breadwinner with Naper Gatesy on Netflix, Peter and I started this and we were cracking up.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: I just love Naper Gatesley.
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: I think he's such a fun comedian.
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: I love the fact that he doesn't curse.
- 15:33SPEAKER_00: Like, good for him.
- 15:34SPEAKER_00: That is hard to do these days.
- 15:35SPEAKER_00: So many comedians make it their whole shtick that they're just cursing left, right, and center.
- 15:39SPEAKER_00: And not that one is better than the other.
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: It's just, it's good.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: It's like good, clean, family-friendly comedy.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: He almost reminds me of like an old school Adam Sandler.
- 15:50SPEAKER_00: This was his first movie, and he's bringing back the like goofy Adam Sandler vibes in a little bit more of like a family-friendly way.
- 15:58SPEAKER_00: Loved it.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: I really could keep talking about television because there's more things that I watched.
- 16:04SPEAKER_00: But let's go ahead and dive in to the main topic.
- 16:07SPEAKER_00: I just had this realization recently that I think we've forgotten how to have fun.
- 16:13SPEAKER_00: And I'm not talking about the sense that like I don't laugh or enjoy myself anymore.
- 16:17SPEAKER_00: It's not like that.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: That's the surface level stuff.
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: But I'm talking about the sense that I can't seem to do anything anymore without simultaneously thinking about how I'm gonna be perceived while I'm doing it.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: Like, I'll go to post something completely harmless, something that I think is genuinely funny.
- 16:33SPEAKER_00: And then within 30 seconds, I've already assembled some sort of like imaginary focus group of people whose opinions I've never asked for on this very obscure topic.
- 16:43SPEAKER_00: And then suddenly that thing that was supposed to be for fun and felt like my personality, I'm now second-guessing like crazy.
- 16:52SPEAKER_00: I just don't think anything is supposed to be that serious.
- 16:54SPEAKER_00: I just think there's a certain level of life that is intended to not be that serious.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: And we're almost our own worst critic with this, because if you guys are like me, it's that thing of the minute I think of something I want to say, whether it's out loud or online, in a text, whatever, I'm immediately thinking about how it could be taken a different way, or somebody could disagree with me, or what if I hurt someone's feelings?
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: Is this a cancelable offense?
- 17:23SPEAKER_00: Like I'm thinking of 11 different scenarios of what I'm trying to say that have nothing to do with it.
- 17:29SPEAKER_00: It's almost like worst case scenario all the time.
- 17:32SPEAKER_00: And I think it's because we've done that.
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: We've seen it.
- 17:35SPEAKER_00: We've seen so many people having fun online and then getting completely canceled for it, right?
- 17:39SPEAKER_00: And it's like, well, they didn't think.
- 17:40SPEAKER_00: And so now we just become like chronic, self-aware overthinkers about everything to the point where sometimes I'm just mute.
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: And that's not me.
- 17:50SPEAKER_00: And like I don't want to be.
- 17:52SPEAKER_00: And I'm I'm not only talking about online stuff, I'm talking about just having a group of or having a conversation with friends.
- 17:58SPEAKER_00: I'm so worried about how I'm being perceived sometimes that I can't say anything because I'm worried that I'm not saying the right thing or I'm not putting the perfect bumper around this sentence I'm trying to get out.
- 18:13SPEAKER_00: When did we start doing this?
- 18:15SPEAKER_00: And more importantly, how do we stop?
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: Like, how do we stop overthinking truly everything?
- 18:21SPEAKER_00: Being self-aware is good.
- 18:22SPEAKER_00: It really is good, but there should be a bumper, like there should be an end point to being self-aware.
- 18:29SPEAKER_00: Sometimes I've become so self-aware of how I'm perceived that I'm just I feel like I'm experiencing my life through a third party.
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: Does that sound insane?
- 18:39SPEAKER_00: Like I'm constantly thinking of how something's being perceived.
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: And if somebody could take offense to what I'm saying, or if I'm going about something the wrong way, like I'm thinking of every alternate way that someone could flip what I'm saying and digest it differently.
- 18:55SPEAKER_00: Okay, so the first step to having more fun, I believe, is to stop being the audience of our own life.
- 19:01SPEAKER_00: Like stop looking at your life as an outsider.
- 19:07SPEAKER_00: I go to post something that I think is funny, I go to say something out loud to a friend, I'm at lunch with someone, I'm texting a friend, I'm making a quick little joke, and suddenly I'm imagining how the receiver might interpret what I'm saying.
- 19:21SPEAKER_00: As I'm saying it.
- 19:23SPEAKER_00: So I can't even relax and sit in the thought I just had.
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: Especially, by the way, this was especially with posting because sometimes it's someone I went to high school with, it's an old colleague, a random person that I'm like, oh God, I want, I want said something so stupid that they're gonna think if I say this, then I'm da-da-da-da-da.
- 19:40SPEAKER_00: Like, I'll go on this huge rampage in my head and make up a story about why what I'm saying is actually gonna be stupid.
- 19:50SPEAKER_00: And then I backtrack it.
- 19:52SPEAKER_00: Like, I feel like I constantly am playing devil's advocate with myself.
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: It's exhausting, like truly exhausting.
- 19:58SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, Hannah, just say it.
- 19:59SPEAKER_00: Just own it, just say what you're gonna say, and it's fine.
- 20:02SPEAKER_00: If people don't get it, it's okay.
- 20:03SPEAKER_00: You have to trust yourself that you're not saying something that's wildly offensive and that you're just expressing yourself, hearing it.
- 20:11SPEAKER_00: I always say with our phones and Instagram and all that, like we were never meant to be this reachable, right?
- 20:17SPEAKER_00: But it's the same concept of like we were also never meant to be looked at with a microscope all the time.
- 20:23SPEAKER_00: And we become so used to that.
- 20:25SPEAKER_00: Like it's so normal to look at what everyone says in detail, thinking, oh, when they said this, they actually meant this and that's offensive, and that's da-da-da.
- 20:34SPEAKER_00: And I keep going back to being offensive thing.
- 20:36SPEAKER_00: That's not even what I'm talking about.
- 20:37SPEAKER_00: I'm just talking about like posting something silly because you're in a silly mood and then thinking later, like, God, that was so stupid.
- 20:43SPEAKER_00: I'm like, duh.
- 20:44SPEAKER_00: Or like, or how many times have you guys ever done a thing where you have coffee with a friend and then you leave coffee and you think about how many dumb things you said to that person?
- 20:54SPEAKER_00: You're like, wow, they probably think I am a big lahoo's a her based on what I just said.
- 21:01SPEAKER_00: Or like, I hope they don't think that I meant this when I was talking about that party that I was at.
- 21:08SPEAKER_00: I'm trying to think of an example, but that's something I do every time I'm listening.
- 21:12SPEAKER_00: So I can't even think of it.
- 21:13SPEAKER_00: I just bury it under my feelings because I'm like, Hannah, don't even go there.
- 21:18SPEAKER_00: Like, don't think so into your one experience with this person.
- 21:21SPEAKER_00: Just trust that they had a good time and they're not paying attention to the stuff that you are overthinking at this moment.
- 21:27SPEAKER_00: I do actually love when I'm catching up with a friend.
- 21:29SPEAKER_00: And afterwards, I'm texting them and I'm like, hey, sorry I said this.
- 21:34SPEAKER_00: I didn't mean it like that.
- 21:35SPEAKER_00: I hope, you know, I hope you didn't take it, whatever.
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: And then they come back and then they're like, no, I didn't even think twice about that.
- 21:42SPEAKER_00: I actually was overthinking this thing that I said, and I'm like, ah, we are the same crazy.
- 21:47SPEAKER_00: We're the same kind of crazy.
- 21:50SPEAKER_00: Have no chill after I hang out with someone that I'm constantly thinking, like, oh I hope they didn't mean I hope they didn't think that meant this.
- 21:57SPEAKER_00: And I just feel like if I took a bean.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: And relaxed, I would have a little bit more fun with it.
- 22:02SPEAKER_00: And then it's just a whatever.
- 22:04SPEAKER_00: Just don't even think about it.
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: Trust that the other person on the other end, whether it's virtually or in person, is taking what you're saying with grace and understanding.
- 22:15SPEAKER_00: And don't feel like you have to over-explain yourself all the time.
- 22:18SPEAKER_00: I am the queen of it.
- 22:20SPEAKER_00: Truly the queen of it.
- 22:21SPEAKER_00: I guess my takeaway with this is like not every moment needs to be evaluated from the outside perspective.
- 22:26SPEAKER_00: We can participate in our own life without simultaneously reviewing the performance.
- 22:30SPEAKER_00: You know, it's that hyper-aware thing and feeling like I'm watching my own life as a third party.
- 22:34SPEAKER_00: Like every moment that happens on the Truman show, watching myself again, being like, did I do that well?
- 22:40SPEAKER_00: Could I have done it better?
- 22:43SPEAKER_00: I could have said it better like this.
- 22:45SPEAKER_00: It's too much.
- 22:46SPEAKER_00: It's exhausting.
- 22:47SPEAKER_00: Okay, my second piece of advice for having a little bit more fun is actually my favorite one.
- 22:51SPEAKER_00: And this one is giving myself permission to be a little embarrassing.
- 22:55SPEAKER_00: I used to get so embarrassed all the time.
- 22:59SPEAKER_00: Do you guys remember being in middle school and high school?
- 23:02SPEAKER_00: And something would happen and you would think about it for seven months.
- 23:07SPEAKER_00: My embarrassing moment list was so long.
- 23:09SPEAKER_00: And then somehow something changed in life where you got so embarrassed all the time that you actually were like, it's not that big of a deal.
- 23:17SPEAKER_00: I can't even think about it.
- 23:18SPEAKER_00: With age came the ability to shrug off any embarrassing moment because you're just like, oh, whatever.
- 23:24SPEAKER_00: Like, who cares?
- 23:25SPEAKER_00: That's the thing that I need to bring back all the time.
- 23:28SPEAKER_00: I just feel like somewhere along the way, we started treating embarrassment like it was some sort of flaw.
- 23:34SPEAKER_00: Like if you're earnest, it can be really cringe.
- 23:37SPEAKER_00: But sometimes you can't have fun without being a little cringe, you know?
- 23:41SPEAKER_00: Oh my god, can I talk about the queen of it?
- 23:43SPEAKER_00: Taylor Swift.
- 23:44SPEAKER_00: I'm just gonna say it, Taylor Swift.
- 23:46SPEAKER_00: I love her.
- 23:47SPEAKER_00: I went to her heiress to her concert.
- 23:48SPEAKER_00: I love her.
- 23:49SPEAKER_00: Do I also think that she's very cringe all the time?
- 23:52SPEAKER_00: Totally.
- 23:53SPEAKER_00: But like who cares?
- 23:54SPEAKER_00: She's always having fun.
- 23:56SPEAKER_00: And I actually think that one of the greatest things that she does is act like an idiot.
- 24:05SPEAKER_00: At award shows, at football games, at any public appearance, she's chugging her drink and dancing her dance.
- 24:14SPEAKER_00: She always says this line that I have to remind myself.
- 24:16SPEAKER_00: She always says, never make fun of someone for having fun.
- 24:19SPEAKER_00: Something like that.
- 24:20SPEAKER_00: Like she always says something along the lines of like, never make fun of someone for having fun.
- 24:26SPEAKER_00: Like it's the lamest thing you can do.
- 24:27SPEAKER_00: If someone's having fun, why would you be making fun of them?
- 24:32SPEAKER_00: And it's all the same thing.
- 24:33SPEAKER_00: Like that's the same lesson of like, we should be a little embarrassing.
- 24:36SPEAKER_00: Like, why is it bad?
- 24:38SPEAKER_00: When did it get bad to be a little embarrassing?
- 24:41SPEAKER_00: Think for a minute about the people that you have the most fun around.
- 24:44SPEAKER_00: They're usually not the ones where you're like meticulously managing your own image, you know?
- 24:49SPEAKER_00: They're the ones who you're silly and goofy with, a bit ridiculous, and they just speak your language, so you don't have to think about it.
- 24:56SPEAKER_00: Being a little embarrassing for me, I think is often my biggest release, like my biggest mental release of having fun.
- 25:04SPEAKER_00: That's another thing.
- 25:04SPEAKER_00: Everything now is perceived as the cool girl.
- 25:07SPEAKER_00: Everyone needs to be the cool girl all the time.
- 25:10SPEAKER_00: Everything now is like a cool girl trend.
- 25:12SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
- 25:12SPEAKER_00: It's like how to be a cool mom or cool girl fall.
- 25:16SPEAKER_00: Here's the cool pieces you need to be wearing for summer.
- 25:19SPEAKER_00: I should bring back embarrass a girl.
- 25:22SPEAKER_00: Obviously, we all want a piece of that pie.
- 25:24SPEAKER_00: Like, you want to be the cool girl in so many different phases of your life.
- 25:30SPEAKER_00: And I get it, rightfully so.
- 25:31SPEAKER_00: I don't know, but when I think about like childhood me, childhood Hannah, I I don't give a rip about being cool.
- 25:38SPEAKER_00: I only want to have fun and be a little dumb, like be a little embarrassing, a little silly, you know?
- 25:45SPEAKER_00: The irony of all of that is I actually think that that's the coolest thing you could do.
- 25:49SPEAKER_00: Which is what Taylor Swift has done.
- 25:52SPEAKER_00: She's like made it cool to be cringe.
- 25:55SPEAKER_00: If you can be a hundred and ten percent yourself and have the best time, that's the coolest thing you could do.
- 26:03SPEAKER_00: Like actually.
- 26:06SPEAKER_00: Okay, and then the final thing I feel like we could do to just have a little bit more fun is to start doing things without making them seem like they mean something.
- 26:15SPEAKER_00: This one is beyond anything on social media.
- 26:17SPEAKER_00: This is truly like, you know how there's a thing going around where everybody is hobby maxing?
- 26:23SPEAKER_00: That's what this one's about.
- 26:24SPEAKER_00: It's doing the thing that you want to do without any thought process of it being shown to anyone else.
- 26:35SPEAKER_00: So, like, you know, it's your safe thing.
- 26:37SPEAKER_00: And this is really hard because even if it is something you intentionally are doing just for yourself, for nobody else to see, my brain for some reason thinks even of my future self looking at this thing, like doing it for my future self.
- 26:51SPEAKER_00: Sometimes it's as simple as journaling.
- 26:53SPEAKER_00: If I'm journaling and I'm getting really deep into what I'm writing about because it's so therapeutic for me, I'll sometimes think about my future self and what my future self will think about what I'm writing.
- 27:06SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's insane.
- 27:09SPEAKER_00: But I do think that everything has become a bit of a project.
- 27:12SPEAKER_00: Like you start a hobby, suddenly you wonder if you could monetize it.
- 27:15SPEAKER_00: You know, you take a picture, suddenly you're thinking about, oh, could I post this?
- 27:19SPEAKER_00: You plan a night out, you're suddenly worried about whether or not that night will be worth all of the effort you're putting into it.
- 27:25SPEAKER_00: Like even every leisure moment of your life sometimes feels like it's something we really need to optimize and like make great.
- 27:32SPEAKER_00: And there's this pressure cooker of making everything perfect mentally sometimes.
- 27:39SPEAKER_00: Always think about my sister-in-law.
- 27:41SPEAKER_00: Funny enough, she's not my sister-in-law quite yet, like legally, but like her and my brother will be wed.
- 27:47SPEAKER_00: And if they're not, then like I'm keeping her and not him.
- 27:50SPEAKER_00: But, anyways, my I call her my sister-in-law because we're just so obsessed with each other and we've done that since we met.
- 27:56SPEAKER_00: So, anyways, about like two summers ago, she was in, we were in Florida at the same time, my mom's house.
- 28:04SPEAKER_00: And she just decided she wanted to start collecting shells, like seashells on the beach.
- 28:10SPEAKER_00: And she found so many good ones that had holes in them.
- 28:12SPEAKER_00: And she was like, you know what?
- 28:14SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna make some earrings.
- 28:15SPEAKER_00: And so then she just started turning this into like a very small, fun business for herself out of pure fun.
- 28:23SPEAKER_00: Like she made a quick little Instagram, she sold a few pairs of earrings, and she had so much fun doing it.
- 28:29SPEAKER_00: And it's not a business now, like it's not something she's like continuing to do.
- 28:33SPEAKER_00: But I think of it all the time because at that phase, when she did that, I was so stressed about work and everything.
- 28:41SPEAKER_00: I was barely keeping my head above water.
- 28:42SPEAKER_00: I wasn't sleeping well.
- 28:44SPEAKER_00: I was so worried about making good money and performing well at work and getting to the next level that I was like, dang, what's it like to just exist like that?
- 28:54SPEAKER_00: Like, what's it like to just be like, hmm, I actually think I'm gonna turn these shells into earrings?
- 28:59SPEAKER_00: Like her and I laugh about this all the time because I'm like, how did you do that?
- 29:02SPEAKER_00: Like my brain wouldn't be able to do that.
- 29:05SPEAKER_00: I'd be thinking 20 steps ahead and not really letting myself enjoy it.
- 29:09SPEAKER_00: I would pick the shells and then I'd be like, well, I'd have to pick a lot of them if I wanted to make this a business and that's no fun.
- 29:14SPEAKER_00: I would almost rip the fun out of the activity because I'm looking at this huge picture.
- 29:21SPEAKER_00: And instead, my sister-in-law just like jumped into it and thought, one day I'm gonna pick up seashells.
- 29:28SPEAKER_00: And the next day she's like, actually, you know what?
- 29:30SPEAKER_00: Let me find more with holes in them.
- 29:31SPEAKER_00: That was so fun.
- 29:32SPEAKER_00: Next day, actually, I think I could sell some of these.
- 29:35SPEAKER_00: Let's run to a Hobby Lobby and find some earring clasps.
- 29:39SPEAKER_00: And next day, oh, I'm gonna make a little Instagram.
- 29:42SPEAKER_00: Had so much fun, like creatively making this Instagram, took a few fun pictures of the earrings and then sold them all.
- 29:50SPEAKER_00: And then after she sold them, she was like, all right, that was fun.
- 29:53SPEAKER_00: Like, didn't think about making it into anything and didn't put the pressure on herself to make it perfect.
- 29:59SPEAKER_00: I strive to be in that level of simplicity.
- 30:04SPEAKER_00: It just like it's it reminds me of the true definition of like mess around and find out, you know, like she's really just like having fun and finding out.
- 30:11SPEAKER_00: She's like, Yeah, I like that.
- 30:12SPEAKER_00: That was fun.
- 30:13SPEAKER_00: She actually talks about doing it again when she comes back to Florida.
- 30:15SPEAKER_00: Like, she's like, ooh, I should do my earring thing again.
- 30:17SPEAKER_00: That was so fun.
- 30:18SPEAKER_00: But yeah, just that ability to lead with fun and not lead with, okay, how do I make this really great and top-notch and the perfect thing for my brand?
- 30:29SPEAKER_00: You know, that's a skill in itself, I think.
- 30:33SPEAKER_00: Okay, so we're gonna have a little bit more fun this week.
- 30:37SPEAKER_00: Okay, guys, we're gonna do it.
- 30:40SPEAKER_00: We're gonna stop imagining 15 people looking at the thing that we're doing every time we do it.
- 30:45SPEAKER_00: We're gonna give ourselves permission to be a little embarrassing and act like we did when we were kids.
- 30:50SPEAKER_00: Let our freak flags fly.
- 30:51SPEAKER_00: And we're gonna do stuff we wanna do without thinking long and hard about it, about all the consequences and the things that could go wrong and if it's worth our time and blah, blah, blah.
- 31:00SPEAKER_00: We're just gonna act, you know?
- 31:03SPEAKER_00: I think there's so much pressure on like Q4 and making sure the end of the year comes out in a bang, and it's like, you can do all the things you want to do.
- 31:10SPEAKER_00: It's like, sure, but let's also just have fun.
- 31:12SPEAKER_00: Let's relax.
- 31:13SPEAKER_00: The holidays are coming up, they get a little crazy.
- 31:15SPEAKER_00: Let's just have some good old classic fun.
- 31:17SPEAKER_00: Bring back your most authentic self, you know.
- 31:20SPEAKER_00: I feel like that's where the best opportunities happen.
- 31:23SPEAKER_00: And if the best opportunities don't happen, then at least you can look back and be like, all right, I tried, I had a good time.
- 31:29SPEAKER_00: I did the thing I wanted to do organically.
- 31:32SPEAKER_00: It didn't put pressure on myself.
- 31:35SPEAKER_00: But thank you guys so much for listening.
- 31:37SPEAKER_00: I hope everybody has a lovely week ahead, per usual, and I'll talk to you guys soon.
- 31:41SPEAKER_00: Bye for now.
