Transcript
- 0:00I attended church camp as a child every summer on lake Travis, near Austin.
- 0:06We would drive the four hours to Austin in the church fan and one year my preacher, Mr.
- 0:13Parsons.
- 0:14Yep.
- 0:15That was his name.
- 0:16He was driving us to camp.
- 0:18Once we got out of the city of Houston and into the country, Mr.
- 0:22Parsons started doing the oddest thing,, he had his hands reached way out as long as they would go.
- 0:30And he was wiggling his fingers.
- 0:34Someone asked him, what are you doing?
- 0:36He looked so funny.
- 0:39Mr.
- 0:39Parsons did not flinch.
- 0:41Instead he answered with the voice of Yoda"I'm feeling the trees." He did this often, by the way.
- 0:54When it comes to building goals, I want you to remember this because that is exactly how I want you to picture your goals.
- 1:04I want you to feel them.
- 1:09You're listening or watching the Stop the mind screw podcast.
- 1:12I'm your host.
- 1:13Kathie Owen Certified Fitness Trainer and Life Coach 2002.
- 1:19Teaching Stop the mind screw process on this channel, we talk about mindset, habits, wellness, fitness, and some Reality Transurfing as well.
- 1:32I titled today's episode 10 steps to building long term fitness goals and yes, feeling the trees has a lot to do with this.
- 1:44When it comes to your goals, you want to feel them like fuel them in your imagination.
- 1:51Like Mr.
- 1:51Parsons was the feeling, the trees.
- 1:55The feeling is the secret.
- 1:58That's the title of a book by Neville Goddard.
- 2:00And it's so true.
- 2:03And as a personal trainer, I see so many fall short when it comes to their fitness goals, but it's not your fault.
- 2:12Create a habit.
- 2:14Instead of a goal, habits are delicate and our brains do not know the difference between a good habit and a bad habit.
- 2:23And when thinking of goals and creating a new habit, we want to use the smart goal tool, which I have pictured here.
- 2:33And we will use the acronym often when it comes to discussing goals, via habits.
- 2:40So the S stands for specific.
- 2:42The M stands for measurable.
- 2:44The, a stands for achievable R stands for relevant and T stands for time bound.
- 2:52Here are the 10 steps to building long-term fitness goals.
- 2:58These are the exact 10 steps that are on the hot habit checklist.
- 3:02I refer to these often.
- 3:04You've probably heard me talk about'em all before, but we touch on'em in different angles.
- 3:08When we're talking about habits.
- 3:10When we're talking about goals, when we're talking about fitness, And you can download your checklist at www.kathieowen.com/habits link will be in the show notes and the description.
- 3:23Number one is awareness.
- 3:27If you go around with blinders on, you will never experience what is truly.
- 3:33Meant to be a happy place for you.
- 3:35In other words, you will never be able to feel your goals.
- 3:40I'm almost asked weekly, Kathie I wanna lose weight.
- 3:44What do I need to do?
- 3:45Or, Hey, Kathie, my doctor says I need to exercise.
- 3:48What do I need to do?
- 3:50Well, the problem here.
- 3:52Is, this is the wrong question.
- 3:56And I could tell you all day long what needs to be done, but the solution needs to become aware and ask a better question.
- 4:09Really think about this during this episode, cuz this is kind of the key ingredient here and you wanna think about who do I need to become?
- 4:18To lose the weight or to get more exercise in your day.
- 4:22That leads me to step number two, changes in your identity.
- 4:26In his book, Atomic Habits, James clear tells us that there are three layers of change.
- 4:31One of the most powerful changes you can make in your life is a change in identity.
- 4:37But what exactly does this mean?
- 4:40Change is hard, and you've probably realized that you are watching this episode because you wanna learn how to set clear long-term fitness.
- 4:52Changing your identity is the best way to start setting your outcome goals.
- 4:58The key to creating goals that last is focusing on creating a new identity.
- 5:04First, your current behaviors are simply a reflection of your current identity.
- 5:10What you do now is a mirror image of the type of person you believe that you are either consciously or unconscious.
- 5:20And to change your behavior for good.
- 5:23You need to start believing new things about yourself.
- 5:26You need to build identity based habits.
- 5:31Think about how we typically set goals.
- 5:33We might start by saying, I wanna lose weight by next month, or I wanna get physical activity is a cool activity, but you need to get specific.
- 5:44You know, the S and smart goals, think of the person you wanna become and identify feelings to that specific.
- 5:54What does that person who lost that weight identify with when it comes to food, the person who is told they need to exercise, what does that person who exercise daily?
- 6:09Hang with me because this leads to the next step, which is recipe for sustained success.
- 6:18James clear also tells us in the book, Atomic Habits that changing your beliefs, isn't nearly as hard as you might think.
- 6:26There are two steps decide the type of person you want to become and then prove it to yourself with small wins.
- 6:35So think of baking a cake.
- 6:37When baking a cake or cookies are even setting goals, we need a recipe.
- 6:45This recipe has to do with changes in your beliefs.
- 6:49And when setting long term fitness goals, we need to become aware of our beliefs around a take around attainable goals, leaving our comfort zone and even our body weight.
- 7:04I mean, is it really your weight that needs to change?
- 7:09You'd be surprised how many times this is not actually what needs to change this recipe here, deciding the type of person you want to be and prove it to yourself with small wins and setting is the recipe for success in setting your goals.
- 7:27This actually the secret recipe for success in general.
- 7:33And this is the next step in our goal setting process.
- 7:36And I want you to picture future events in your mind, think about how would the person you want to become handle themselves, picture your future self in detail.
- 7:49What do you look like?
- 7:51What do you feel like?
- 7:53What is your body language?
- 7:55Like?
- 7:55How do you talk.
- 7:58And here's a pro tip.
- 7:59What choices and decisions do you make and proving it to yourself with small wins.
- 8:06That's a great way to identify immediate goals and celebrate them to celebrate those small wins.
- 8:13I recommend having a small wins journal here, you can keep your short term goals and document and celebrate those small wins on a regular basis.
- 8:24I have a dream big page in my notion journal on this page.
- 8:29I insert images of what I want, who I want to become, and even.
- 8:34Include my short-term and long-term goals.
- 8:38And this way I can look at my smaller goals and find the wins today, instead of waiting until I reach the long-term goals, because my friend, the journey and the destination are actually one, I know.
- 8:54I constantly have to update this journal though.
- 8:57You, you wanna know why it's, because what I have wanted has actually come to be, and I have to dream bigger.
- 9:07That's why I call it the dream big journal.
- 9:10So to have changes in, in our identity, we need to have changes in our processes.
- 9:18What does that mean, Kathie?
- 9:20The level of change is concerned with changing your habits and systems implementing a new workout routine, for example, or maintaining your meal plan.
- 9:30So you achieve your weight loss goals or tracking your food journal on my fitness P on a consistent basis.
- 9:37And most of the habits you build or associated with this level, by the way, they all represent a smart fitness goal example.
- 9:48while dreaming big in my dream big journal, I also found I need to change my processes to become the person I wanted to be.
- 9:56I needed new routines, new workflows and new practices.
- 10:00And the thing is you only need to be 1% better today than yesterday.
- 10:07Yeah, that's a slight edge principle by the, from the book, Jeff.
- 10:12A, the slight edge by Jeff Olson.
- 10:14And it really works.
- 10:16The great thing about this step is it helps us identify the M in smart goals that M stands for measurable or a measurable goal.
- 10:26You can measure the efficiency of your processes as you begin to identify what is working for you and what is not working for you.
- 10:34You also identify when it comes time to change these processes up as well.
- 10:41That leads me to the next step in our processes and that's outcomes.
- 10:47When baking that cake, if you are aware of the outcome, you know, you are baking a cake, not cookies or a ham.
- 10:55You are baking a cake.
- 10:58So you, when you are talking about outcomes, this level is concerned with changing your results, losing weight, getting stronger, or just upping your fitness level.
- 11:09Most of the goals you set are associated with this level of change.
- 11:13A lot of us stay stuck in this place for a long time.
- 11:18Why?
- 11:18Because we know what we want, but we have a hard time finding out how to get.
- 11:24Okay.
- 11:26So, you know, you want a cake, but you gotta have the recipe on how to get there.
- 11:31That's your outcomes, but we become really good at knowing the outcome we want.
- 11:37I mean, you found this video or podcast episode, right.
- 11:43And I'm proud of you you've come this far.
- 11:46Do you wanna set long-term goals that really help you?
- 11:49You feel those goals in a great way?
- 11:52You know, like Mr.
- 11:53Parsons felt the trees.
- 11:56The key difference is applying all 10 steps, so you can find success.
- 12:01We have four more steps to go.
- 12:04Step number six is create friction.
- 12:08It has been said it is easier to avoid temptation than to resist it for these long term fitness goals.
- 12:16We need to be ready when temptation comes to play and trust me.
- 12:21It will, for me personally, it has always been my sleep.
- 12:26I'm really good at sleeping.
- 12:28I could teach you how to do it in my sleep, literally, but I exercise in the morning at five 30 in the morning, and I'd much rather be looking at the back of my eyelids than get up at five 30 and hit the gym, but I do it.
- 12:44So how can you incorporate friction to help?
- 12:48Do the good habit and stay away from the bad habit.
- 12:51Remember your brain doesn't know the difference between a good and a bad habit.
- 12:56So friction for me looks like this.
- 12:59I put my alarm in a place where I have to get outta bed to reach it.
- 13:03I repeat certain affirmations to myself.
- 13:06Like the hardest part is getting out of bed or it's gonna be a great day.
- 13:10My clothes are already ready.
- 13:12Let's go.
- 13:14And going back to sleep is for excuses.
- 13:18You know, ask yourself, how can I incorporate friction so I can actually do what I have set out to do on my fitness journey and have success in the long run.
- 13:30That takes me to the next level.
- 13:34Step number seven is set clear goals.
- 13:38Oh, that's funny.
- 13:40We're talking about that today.
- 13:42Hm.
- 13:43And you may be saying to yourself, okay, Kathie that's why I'm here.
- 13:48Isn't this all about setting clear goals and yes it is.
- 13:54But do you know why setting clear goals is important?
- 13:59You know, the kind of goals that you can feel like Mr.
- 14:02Parsons feels those trees.
- 14:05When we set fitness goals that are clear, it helps trigger new behaviors, which helps guide your focus and helps you sustain that momentum that you're on in life.
- 14:16Setting clear goals also helps you align your focus and promote a sense of self mastery.
- 14:22Remember those small wins we talked about?
- 14:25Yeah, you actually have an action plan that will take you a long.
- 14:32The key points to remember here are triggering new behaviors and guiding your focus and setting these clear goals.
- 14:42Also help you sustain that momentum and it aligns your focus and promotes a sense of self mastery.
- 14:51In the end, you can't manage what you don't measure and you can't improve upon something that you don't properly manage.
- 15:00The key is feeling those goals, you know, like Mr.
- 15:04Parsons feels the trees.
- 15:07Step number eight is find harmony between challenge and.
- 15:14harmony is the key word here.
- 15:18So Mr.
- 15:18Parsons, one time misplaced his keys to the van at a pit stop and he started mumbling, dirty word, dirty word, dirty word.
- 15:27And he was mumbling because guess where the keys were, they were in his mouth in between his teeth and everyone laughed including Mr.
- 15:37Parsons.
- 15:38And I might add, he did this more than one time.
- 15:43So we all have challenges and we put so much pressure on ourselves to find those dang keys, but sometimes it is best to just laugh and even remember that our goal could even be in between our teeth.
- 16:00You are going to meet challenges along the way.
- 16:03How will you find harmony?
- 16:05I like to focus on even just the word, but here's another thing.
- 16:12That leads me to step number nine, which is expect failure.
- 16:20I always say this.
- 16:21It's not, if you are going to fail, but win failure is a part of life.
- 16:26Expect it.
- 16:27Plan for it.
- 16:29You will make mistakes and you are human.
- 16:32Failures are part of the journey to success and everyone faces setbacks.
- 16:38It's how you look at them.
- 16:39That makes all the difference in the.
- 16:43So plan for failure when you plan for failure, you know, that's just part of the journey on the way to the destination.
- 16:50And you are just one step closer to where you wanna be.
- 16:54And guess what the destination is always changing.
- 16:58How will you face that fact when you get there?
- 17:02Failing in life helps to build resilience.
- 17:04And the more we fail, the more resilient we become in order to achieve great success.
- 17:10We must know resilience.
- 17:14So I'm oftentimes asked to train clients for, for.
- 17:18Various reasons.
- 17:19And when I'm asked to train someone because they need a trainer is one of the most difficult to train because they are being forced to exercise.
- 17:31Well, remember the levels of power versus forced and the levels of consciousness that we talked about.
- 17:37Yeah.
- 17:38Usually when this happens in these instances, They work real hard at first, and then they get injured and quit.
- 17:51I've seen this happen so many times or they lose that momentum that we talked about.
- 17:58Actually, both of those happen when they get injured or they just lose the momentum because they just took it too hard to start with.
- 18:06And this blows everything up.
- 18:10But if they expect failure and then they have a plan for when that happens, it changes everything.
- 18:17For example, say that you are are high, are forced to hire me as your trainer.
- 18:24I would say, okay, you're doing great.
- 18:26You're going good.
- 18:27All in your first week.
- 18:28What are you gonna do?
- 18:30When number one, you get hurt.
- 18:32What is your plan for when you get hurt?
- 18:34So you get back on the wagon.
- 18:36If you hurt your arm, um, how are you gonna work your legs?
- 18:40You can't just quit just because your arm is hurt.
- 18:43And what are, what are you going to do to keep you on track?
- 18:48Maybe you need a different type of exercise.
- 18:50Maybe you need to get on the bicycle for a while.
- 18:53I don't know.
- 18:54You've got to expect it and plan for that.
- 18:58And number 10 embody the goal.
- 19:02When you actually embody the new identity of the fitness goal you are to achieve you get in the zone.
- 19:09Also known as flow flow is the book by Mihi cheek semi high.
- 19:15And it's all about the optimal.
- 19:19Performance, optimal happiness.
- 19:22Getting in the zone, you know, much like a professional athlete who embodies this sport, he or she is playing.
- 19:29You actually become what is called autotelic.
- 19:32What does that mean?
- 19:33An autotelic personality means your goals are intrinsic.
- 19:37They come from inside.
- 19:38I did a video on motivation and I'll link it in the show notes and the description.
- 19:45and your work becomes immersive.
- 19:47You get lost in your work, just like that professional athlete does.
- 19:51Your attention is unwavering.
- 19:53It means your focus is there and your work is inherently enjoyable.
- 19:59So when was the last time you felt like your goals were coming from the inside and you felt.
- 20:04Immersed in your work and you just couldn't, you, you couldn't focus on anything else, but that, that project that you were working on and your work is inherently enjoyable.
- 20:16Imagine if you could apply that to your fitness goals, what would that change?
- 20:21What would that happen when your goals are coming from the inside?
- 20:25And, and you're, you're, you're just lost in whatever exercise you're doing and you, your focus is there and your productivity just skyrockets and it makes it fun.
- 20:40Let me add that you fall in love with the journey and the destination because they are one.
- 20:46Yep.
- 20:47That's right.
- 20:48Spoiler alert.
- 20:50the journey.
- 20:50And the destination are the same thing.
- 20:55When you embody this journey, you actually feel the goals, you know, like Mr.
- 20:59Parsons feels the trees.
- 21:02So let me ask you a question.
- 21:04How are you going to feel your goals?
- 21:07Well, I can't wait to see what you do.
- 21:10All right.
- 21:11That ends my episode today.
- 21:12I hope you liked it.
- 21:14Thank you for spending part of your day with me and.
- 21:19If you enjoyed this episode, please go out and share it with somebody and be a blessing to someone that in itself is an awesome reward till next time.
- 21:33I'll see you next time.
- 21:34Peace out.
- 21:35And Namaste.
