- 0:01Welcome to authentic living with Roxanne, a place where we have as conversations about
- 0:08things that really matter in our lives.
- 0:12And now here's your host, Roxanne Durgesh.
- 0:38Hi, everyone.
- 0:39It's Roxanne Durabaj.
- 0:40Thanks for tuning in again this week.
- 0:42This week, I have a very special young lady that I met almost I think it's about a year
- 0:47ago, Carrie, that we met at, Andrea Monka's, training in Mississauga.
- 0:53So I was privileged too.
- 0:55I think we were seated next week.
- 0:57Oh, no.
- 0:57I think it was the accent.
- 0:58Let's be fair.
- 0:59I
- 0:59think accent.
- 1:02And that's and we got to know each other, through the 2 day training, that we had, I
- 1:06think, was last November.
- 1:08So I asked Carrie to come in onto the podcast because she is a health coach.
- 1:14And, you know, her story's fascinating, but I'm I'm gonna read her Bio and then we'll go from
- 1:20there.
- 1:21She's, originally born and raised in, Melbourne, Australia.
- 1:24She moved to Canada back in 2012 after going through struggles with things like depression.
- 1:33Adult acne, psoriasis, body to morphic issues, which is basically body image issues, self self
- 1:39esteem and confidence.
- 1:42And she wanted to go out there and kind of discover who she who who was I really, and
- 1:46create a healthier, more empowered life for herself.
- 1:49What better way to do that than on a loan on the other side of the world like everybody
- 1:53does?
- 1:57Sure.
- 1:57Have to dive deep.
- 1:58That's for sure.
- 1:59She trusted the universe in Dovin, quit smoking, cut back and drinking, changed her
- 2:04diet, increased her exercise, and made some awesome, super healthy friends that started
- 2:10going after what was important, and she met this amazing.
- 2:14Then in the process, which we'd love to hear more about.
- 2:18After going through her transformation, she started working with women who are busy,
- 2:22stressed out and, you know, how many people out there are in that lane.
- 2:26I I can, attest that I've been there many times and and vastly back and forth.
- 2:31And she's assisted them in creating a healthier lifestyle that fit it in around their
- 2:36schedules.
- 2:37Life should be balanced and doing it alone.
- 2:40Like you said, you shouldn't have to do it alone.
- 2:43Since moving, to Toronto, she does yoga frequently, she's on the Toronto Food scene,
- 2:49and she does.
- 2:51Actually, I just clicked on her Instagram, and she was making the most amazing soup So maybe
- 2:57she'll tell us more about that.
- 2:58And, she makes the most amazing smoothies.
- 3:02She says, these are her life.
- 3:04So, Carrie, welcome, to authentic living with Roxanne.
- 3:07Thank you so much.
- 3:09So how have you been?
- 3:10I see you've been, you've been home which looked amazing.
- 3:13It looked like you had a fantastic time visiting your family at home.
- 3:17Oh, yes.
- 3:18I was back in, I spent 7 weeks actually in Bali, which was amazing.
- 3:25I went there and completed an Iovatic yoga certification.
- 3:30Just to obviously dive a little deeper and add on to my current practices and qualification
- 3:36and then I went back home to Melbourne for 2 weeks, and spent time there because I have a 15
- 3:43month old little nephew.
- 3:45Who is into everything right now and driving my sister.
- 3:49I shouldn't say driving her crazy, but keeping her on her toes.
- 3:53So, yeah, it was really nice to be back.
- 3:56And, but, you know, it's funny.
- 3:57It's like, everyone was like, why did you leave now?
- 4:00You should have left in January, February.
- 4:03When the weather got really bad, but it's funny being back.
- 4:06It's really it's nice even though the weather was amazing away.
- 4:08It's, you know, I think it's always good and exciting to come back with a fresh perspective
- 4:14and to be able to jump and sort of dive in with a creative flare if that makes sense.
- 4:19Oh, absolutely.
- 4:20Now Let's let's kinda talk about, your journey.
- 4:24It would just been quite interesting.
- 4:26And when I had the privilege of spending some time with with you.
- 4:29You had shared us a bit about some of the stomach issues you'd had and things like that.
- 4:33So tell people kind of your path, kinda back in Australia, I know you used to I I believe you
- 4:38used to run night clubs or something like that.
- 4:40Yeah.
- 4:41Yeah.
- 4:41And kinda and now she's a flight attendant with, is it Air Canada?
- 4:47Yeah.
- 4:47Okay.
- 4:48So she's kind of done that.
- 4:49And in this, she's also done the health coaching, which is fascinating.
- 4:53So tell us a little bit about your path and kind of what was happening to you that really
- 4:58made you think, you know, I need a change.
- 5:02Yeah.
- 5:03For sure.
- 5:03So the queen ages of 20 1 26, I was working as an events organizer for a series of bars and
- 5:13nightclubs in Melbourne, where at a wonderful company.
- 5:18However, I think, you know, being a part of that scene and always being in the social scene
- 5:25with you know, drinking and all all of that.
- 5:27Although I was taking care of myself and the fitness end of things, there was so many other
- 5:33areas of my health that weren't being taken care of.
- 5:36And I think for during that period, you know, I had no idea for myself, that my actions had an
- 5:45effect on what was happening on my external world.
- 5:48I was oblivious to the fact that It was me that controlled what was happening.
- 5:54It had no idea what Mindbody's soul connection meant.
- 5:58So what had happened was, like, I was eating the incorrect foods for my body type, eating a
- 6:05lot of foods that I was intolerant to you know, the amount of sugar that comes through alcohol,
- 6:11I smoked cigarettes.
- 6:13My my body just started literally shutting down.
- 6:16I was sitting at my desk one day at work, and I looked down at my legs.
- 6:19It was summer, and I saw this, like, look like a rash on my legs.
- 6:23And I was thinking, how is that?
- 6:25I thought maybe it's a heat rash or something.
- 6:27And after a week, it still hadn't gone away.
- 6:29I went to the dermatologist, and they were like, yeah.
- 6:32You have psoriasis that it just flared up and broken out on the trunk of my body, and all
- 6:37over my legs.
- 6:39So at the time as well, like, I was just my body was frust.
- 6:43I was having panic attacks, anxiety attacks.
- 6:47I would frequently get adult acne on my chin on my back.
- 6:53You know, sometimes you just think it's it's normal that I don't know.
- 6:57These are just symptoms that, you know, you go through.
- 7:00Sometimes in your life.
- 7:02And after using a whole bunch of creams and using UV light therapy, it did go away a little
- 7:09bit.
- 7:11But it it it ended up coming back when I moved to Canada.
- 7:14So what had happened with us sort of been a place where I was watching a lot of my friends
- 7:19get married, have babies, really growing and expanding themselves as people.
- 7:23And I was just like, I don't understand this, but I'm I'm stuck and I really wasn't aware or
- 7:33didn't have the tools per se to go for what I wanted because I was so mentally clouded.
- 7:38Everything was cloudy.
- 7:39It was just survival mode.
- 7:41And I said, you know what?
- 7:43I'm just at a point.
- 7:44I have to take a risk.
- 7:45I sold everything.
- 7:46I sold my car, sold on my furniture, all of my clothes, and I just knew that I had to step
- 7:51away from the life that I had.
- 7:52It wasn't getting me any closer to being a happy empowered version of myself.
- 7:58So I left everything that was secured to me.
- 8:00My bosses were please don't leave.
- 8:02We'll give you a pay rise.
- 8:03I'm like, it's not about money anymore.
- 8:05So it's like, it's time for me to go and find myself.
- 8:08Because I just don't even know who I am.
- 8:11And the interesting thing is that it was to everybody else, you know, it looked like I had
- 8:16everything.
- 8:17You know, I had this fun, great job, amazing friends, amazing family.
- 8:21But something was missing for me on the inside.
- 8:24So I've never been to Canada before.
- 8:28But I'd already lived in England, and, it was a 2 year working visa at the time.
- 8:33I was able to get in Canada.
- 8:34So I thought, you know what?
- 8:35I'm just gonna take this first.
- 8:37I'm gonna go there and see, what doors and opportunities open up.
- 8:44And I really just surrendered myself, Roxanne, to the universe.
- 8:46I was like, I trust, numb number 1.
- 8:50I'm a good talker, so I trusted no matter what.
- 8:53I'd be able to make good friends, and that I did.
- 8:57And that just everything would fall into place.
- 8:59I just trusted my guidance system.
- 9:01So It was pretty full on because I had worked out for myself that I was suffering from
- 9:07depression, like, probably about 3 weeks before I left.
- 9:11It was a self realization.
- 9:13I never would have thought as myself as someone that was depressed.
- 9:18And then all my family were like, yeah, we didn't wanna say anything.
- 9:22We didn't wanna upset you.
- 9:23And, yeah, so it's pretty hard.
- 9:25When I came here to Canada, I was really working through a lot of that stuff on my own.
- 9:31I think sometimes when, you know, you have that chance to sort of step back and let go of
- 9:37things that that self realization really comes into place.
- 9:41So when I arrived here in Canada and my psoriasis have played up again, I'd spent,
- 9:48like, about a $1000 on creams and stuff and doctors, still nothing changed.
- 9:56I had the opportunity of meeting my current partner.
- 10:00We've been together for 7, you know, coming up to 7 years.
- 10:03And when I met him, he suffers from a skin condition for a bit of Lego, and he had said to
- 10:10me, you can't go to a regular but it's not gonna fix it.
- 10:14You need to go to a naturopath, and I thought to myself, that's a naturopath couldn't do at
- 10:20the time.
- 10:21So I go to the naturopathy.
- 10:23I was telling her all of my symptoms, and I'm like, I can't stop crying.
- 10:26I'm bloated.
- 10:27I can't stop eating.
- 10:28Sugar cravings, psoriasis, acne.
- 10:32I I had gained a lot of weight as well.
- 10:34I mean, that had a lot to do with the food that I was eating at the time.
- 10:39And, the naturopath had a big smoke on her face when I told her my symptoms, and and I was
- 10:44like, are you laughing at me?
- 10:47She was like, no, I'm not laughing at you.
- 10:51I just, I think I know what's wrong with you.
- 10:53So I had a thing called, it was a candida overgrowth.
- 10:58I had a thing called leaky gut, which is basic a thinning of the lining of the wall and the
- 11:04intestines where everyone has a certain amount of yeast can be there in their stomach, but,
- 11:09often at times it will flare up.
- 11:11If it's not balanced and you're maybe not eating the best of foods, a lot of sugars and
- 11:15carbs.
- 11:17So it had just red.
- 11:19Bless you.
- 11:19Thank you.
- 11:21It had wreaked, havoc in my body, which was what was causing the psoriasis and acne and
- 11:27whole bunch of symptoms that I was going through.
- 11:30She put me on what's called an elimination diet.
- 11:34And 3 weeks later, the psoriasis was gone.
- 11:39Within 6 weeks, I had dropped about 7 to 8 kilos, which is insane.
- 11:44Yeah.
- 11:45That's a lot.
- 11:45Sorry.
- 11:45We're going kilos 2 point £2 to the kilo.
- 11:49Like like £15 or something.
- 11:51Yeah.
- 11:51About £15.
- 11:54And, like, I was sleeping, like, 7 hours a night before that.
- 11:58I was sleeping, like, 12 hours a night.
- 11:59Still waking up tired.
- 12:02And that was it Roxanne after I realized the power of food and the body.
- 12:07That was 6 years ago.
- 12:08That's when everything changed, and I knew that I had to help other women.
- 12:14And men don't I'm not, you know, where our our bodies are very similar to, so technically,
- 12:19like, I tend to work a lot more with women, have worked with men I'm not opposed to working
- 12:24with men, but, that's sort of the path that I've taken and So that's where I am today.
- 12:32Yeah.
- 12:32Just giving back because, I think when you go through an experience and and the funniest
- 12:39thing was, I was like telling everyone, did you guys know the power of food in the body?
- 12:44And I did some paperwork looking at me, like,
- 12:50Yeah.
- 12:50You're so probably so the this this whole path, really, was something that's was new for you.
- 12:59You hadn't really focused on food before.
- 13:03What in in your upbringing, it wasn't something that was really focused on, or was it something
- 13:08that you did grow up with certain good foods, but you or you didn't like it?
- 13:12Well, here's the funny thing is that My mom worked for Weight Watchers for 27 years as a
- 13:18lecturer.
- 13:20The thing with the Weight Watchers method is they focus on the amount of calories to lose
- 13:26weight.
- 13:26It's not necessarily the nutrients in food.
- 13:30So, My mentality of things for the longest time was eat food to lose weight, not necessarily
- 13:38worrying about the nutrients that you were getting from food.
- 13:44So with a lot of the training that I did, it was I would keep my food very simple.
- 13:49And, you know, it'd be like chicken and avocado that I'd eat for dinner, but the thing is I was
- 13:53drinking soy like, I use number 1.
- 13:55Soy was not a good thing for my body.
- 13:57Like, I was still having bread and dairy and things like that, which for my unique body
- 14:02type, it just wasn't, taking it very well.
- 14:06So it wasn't so much that I was out getting top of bars and chips and and and sort of letting
- 14:11loose to that degree.
- 14:14And and that can be the problem with marketing and advertising of food products with people
- 14:21that are thinking constantly about the weight loss aspect as opposed to how does food make me
- 14:27feel?
- 14:27Does it give me energy?
- 14:28Does it take away?
- 14:29Does it make me tired?
- 14:31Am I getting all the nutrients so that my body can function properly.
- 14:35And this is the problem because everyone's just thinking on the external, and they can tend to
- 14:41forget about what's happening on the internal.
- 14:43So definitely because I think if you think of a lot of the food companies and the marketing, or
- 14:50the things that you see all over social, it's about, low fats, right?
- 14:54You hear this whole concept, and, I mean, which has created such a revolution, which is
- 15:01diametrically opposed to where, I think, health of the baby is.
- 15:04Right?
- 15:04It's about, feeding your body to feed your brain, but a lot of people go to the the
- 15:09consumption element, like you're saying, oh, I shouldn't be above a certain amount of
- 15:12calories.
- 15:13Mhmm.
- 15:13And they watch that versus kinda thinking, what what am I putting in my body, which is kinda
- 15:18what what you're seeing.
- 15:20Yeah.
- 15:21100%.
- 15:22And, you know, I think as well.
- 15:27What happens is when when it comes to counting calories is that and and mind you, I'm I'm not,
- 15:34you know, there may be certain times in people's life where that's important,
- 15:38especially if they're, you know, suffering disease.
- 15:42And the doctors are asking them, like, we need you to stick to.
- 15:45So in certain circumstances, and I'm not sort of taking away, the importance that that may
- 15:52hold, in certain periods of people's lives, but as a general point, what ends up happening is
- 15:58when we come from a place of deprivation, as humans, we like to be a little naughty and
- 16:04rebel, and we don't like being told what to do.
- 16:08So what happens is if you're told you can't make this, you can't do that, you can never
- 16:14have a glass of wine, you can never have a little bit of chocolate, people end up
- 16:17bingeing, and then they end up going the other way.
- 16:20So for me, personally, I have a 80% 20% rule you need to leave 20% room for play when it
- 16:27comes to food because sometimes there is just, there are certain foods that your body's
- 16:33calling for that needs nourishment.
- 16:36And it's important that you have that.
- 16:38Otherwise, you just end up diving down the deep end, and it can be a long spiral down.
- 16:44So kind of tell me it used when women let's see an average woman comes to because I'm sure a
- 16:49lot of people list thing or saying, okay, you know, what's different?
- 16:54Right?
- 16:54Like, when you see, let's say someone comes to their, you know, mid mid thirties, early
- 16:58forties kind of thing, middle aged woman.
- 17:02And she's struggling.
- 17:03Maybe she's top I'm I'm gonna assume this is maybe the I'm tired.
- 17:07Probably got about £10 I'd like to lose.
- 17:11You know, I'm I'm fine that I, you know, I I can work for a bit, but then I'd have a drop in
- 17:16I I could think of time Like, I get a drop in in energy, those types of things.
- 17:21What's what what kind of where where do you go with Pete?
- 17:23Someone like that?
- 17:25Because I
- 17:25hear you talking a lot about body type, which I'm interested in.
- 17:28I'm sure the people listening might be also, interested in that.
- 17:33For sure.
- 17:34So, there are so many sort of different modalities all over the world from different
- 17:40cultures.
- 17:41With, how one would go about, you know, sort of eating or losing weight and especially pending
- 17:49sort of where you're from.
- 17:51So, there's a couple of things as well because being in Toronto here and it being this like,
- 17:57beautiful cultural melting pot, which is what I love so much about the city is depending where
- 18:02you're from, often, especially if you're born in other countries, your body type can be used
- 18:07to eating certain foods that are not natural to that region, but all of a sudden, you know, now
- 18:12we're living here in Canada, and you can just about have access set any kind of food at any
- 18:18time of the year.
- 18:18And the thing that people need to realize it's really important as well is to eat typically
- 18:25what's naturally grown in the regions for that certain time of year.
- 18:30Like, there's certain times that it's not normal to be eating mangoes in the middle of,
- 18:35winter as an example in the middle of Canada.
- 18:37Maybe if you're down in Jamaica, it might be normal to eat that.
- 18:40So, because we have access to all of these different foods and everyone's body types are
- 18:46uniquely different, which according to the ayurvedic tradition, it's really cool.
- 18:53There's, ways to find out maybe what types of foods you should be eating for your body type.
- 18:58That's just one method that I can sort of take through people so that they can learn, sort of
- 19:05what kinds of foods they should be eating.
- 19:07So what I do when I'm with a client, there's a couple of things that I need to really sort of
- 19:12strip back and learn about the person because depending what you do for a job, whether you've
- 19:16got children, Like, do you fly a lot for work?
- 19:20Everyone's lifestyles now are just so different that that needs to be taken into consideration.
- 19:26People's goals need to be taken into consideration.
- 19:30You know, the stress that they're taking on needs to be taken into consideration.
- 19:35And I also think, sort of, especially with Western Society, it's go go go.
- 19:43It's just constant stress.
- 19:45Like, always gotta be moving.
- 19:47And I think typically where people are constantly thinking, okay.
- 19:52So I've gotta do high intensity workouts and I've gotta go hard at the gym or hang on.
- 19:58Someone's told me I'm gonna do this keto diet or this paleo diet.
- 20:03And this this is where I'm so overwhelmed and I struggle with it because if you don't sort of
- 20:14deconstruct and understand all these different factors about yourself.
- 20:19You can spend years like, years trying to work out what the right thing to do for you is if
- 20:27you're not working with someone who is a professional that can help you gets straight to
- 20:32the point of what's missing because it's not just about food, and it's not just about
- 20:36movement.
- 20:37There are so many things that come into play when it comes to weight loss.
- 20:41So I hope that's sort of answered your question.
- 20:43Yeah.
- 20:43So tell me a bit about stress.
- 20:45Like, when you talk about stress.
- 20:47Are you looking for strategies, that that are conducive to the body person's body type to
- 20:54help them kind of manage their stress along with figure out the foods are best tailored for
- 20:59them.
- 20:59So you're looking at, like, an overall strategy, really.
- 21:03Absolutely.
- 21:04So another thing, like, you know, I'll I'll give you sort of like a a little sort of tip
- 21:10here which, you know, a lot of people may be unaware of, but it Like, what happens is for a
- 21:16lot of people, they're eating, you know, maybe they're not taking a proper lunch break or
- 21:21they're eating in between meetings.
- 21:23Or they're skipping meals.
- 21:25What ends up happening is when we eat and the stress responses on, which is for most of us
- 21:32because, you know, they're running in between, like, something like that.
- 21:36It's like not allowing the body time to act fully digest assimilate all the nutrients,
- 21:42because it takes the brain like 20 minutes to acknowledge when we're full.
- 21:46Most people eating their food between 2 to 3 minutes.
- 21:50It's going down so fast.
- 21:51Disrupt responses on.
- 21:53That's when people end up with indigestion.
- 21:56Brieflots, and it doesn't allow the metabolism to break the food down accordingly.
- 22:02So when you're constantly eating like that, what happens is the body ends up showing it as
- 22:06fat because it doesn't necessarily also know when is it gonna get its next meal and its
- 22:11metabolism hasn't had the time to properly yeah, digest the food of what we're eating.
- 22:18So, you know, even something so small is allowing yourself you know, 15 to 20 minutes
- 22:26just to sit back without flipping through your social media and reading a book and just
- 22:31relaxing and taking some deep breaths.
- 22:33That in itself will do wonders, but nobody teaches people this.
- 22:37You don't learn it at the gym, and you don't necessarily learn at that school or through
- 22:42some other education.
- 22:43So there there are a lot of sort of mindful activities that come into bringing the stress
- 22:53down so that the body can do what it's meant to do without feeling like it's constantly in this
- 22:59place of thought.
- 23:01Right.
- 23:01And, you know, and a lot of people would say that's all well and good, but how do I, you
- 23:06know, that the objection you might get is how am I gonna do it?
- 23:09But you're right.
- 23:10If it's if it becomes a habit that, you know, I'm in between meetings and I'm gonna grab
- 23:15something here or there.
- 23:16Oh, geez.
- 23:17I forgot to eat today.
- 23:18So I'm gonna what happens is you and I'm sure you see a lot of people saying that they eat a
- 23:22lot at night because her body's still needing the nutrients versus eat throughout the day.
- 23:28I know if I if I keep a pretty steady routine eating And at night, I'm I'm fine.
- 23:33Right?
- 23:33I might need a little snack, but if I haven't eaten all day and you're kind of finally, your
- 23:38body's still saying I need more.
- 23:40I need more.
- 23:40Kinda and then that's when you stop to after all the stress, you know, you're just kinda
- 23:44slightly slowing down.
- 23:46Oh, yeah.
- 23:47Yeah.
- 23:47And it's especially at nighttime for people.
- 23:49It an opportunity for them to stop and maybe eat something that's really pleasurable.
- 23:54So that's where people tend to, you know, eat the chips or chocolate or have a glass of wine
- 23:58in of the TV because that's their that's their moment.
- 24:01But, when you when you understand what it is that you should be eating for you, you should
- 24:08be getting enough sort of nutrients during during the day so that at nighttime, you're not
- 24:12ravenous because you've had your healthy fats fibrin protein during the day.
- 24:17And and it does.
- 24:18It takes planning, but people, you know, people need to understand that it's investing in you.
- 24:24You're the one that the benefits.
- 24:26I understand it's hard.
- 24:27Like, it's difficult life's busy, but when it's it's like anything, when you put money in to a
- 24:34really good investment account, you're going to continue to do it.
- 24:37So when you start seeing how your body responds to eating these healthy foods, and your
- 24:43energies through the roof, you know, the serotonin's pumping through the body.
- 24:46Like, you just you're on this high.
- 24:48You're feeling amazing.
- 24:49You're like, why would I go back to eating that way?
- 24:52When it was just making me feel lethargic and wasn't sleeping very well.
- 24:56So, it's all about really like getting clear on what it is that you should be doing for you,
- 25:06and then it's all about taking really small bite sized little changes.
- 25:12You can't just go in and think you can do it all at once because your brain will load up and
- 25:16go, woah.
- 25:17Woah.
- 25:17Woah.
- 25:18There's too much going on here.
- 25:20It really is it's, you know, it's taken me the better part of 6 years to get me to where I am
- 25:26today.
- 25:27And it's a journey.
- 25:29Like, anything.
- 25:29It really is.
- 25:30So give give me some of your top
- 25:37errors that you see people making when they when they come to you.
- 25:39Right?
- 25:40And they say, oh, I've been doing this for years, and it's, you know, and and you go, oh,
- 25:43goodness.
- 25:43Like, oh, there's a good top things that you're saying.
- 25:46You go, okay.
- 25:46Whatever you do, don't do these things off the bat.
- 25:50Can you think of a couple?
- 25:55Things that people do.
- 25:56I would say, I mean, you mentioned it before about the whole low fat because it's loaded up.
- 26:03I think a lot of the time, what people think is healthy because of marketing and advertising,
- 26:08I, you know, people drinking pot diet.
- 26:12Like, full of us pertain like this stuff because people are thinking art, but it doesn't
- 26:19have sugar in it, but I mean, I've mentioned I was on, like, another talk and a lady was
- 26:25asking the word about diet coke, and I hope I really didn't insult the lady, but I I just
- 26:29said I wouldn't consume anything that would clean my rings or a toilet.
- 26:33It's just people, like, you need to think like, my mom in house, Diet Coke, and, caffeine free
- 26:42diet coke was the thing for years and, like, know, the low fat yogurts, these are some of
- 26:46the things that come to mind, and it's like you're better off having full fat.
- 26:50A 110%.
- 26:53You know, and and I think it's easier to see as well for me, like, you know, people who are
- 27:00maybe suffering eczema and psoriasis and things like that.
- 27:04Now that I have a better understanding, because does it all diseases start in the gut.
- 27:09And, when we nourish our stomachs, and we looked after the the flora in our stomachs.
- 27:18It's a lot of the time when I see people who are suffering from a lot of skin irritation.
- 27:23If I notice or become aware of some of the things that they're eating, that maybe someone
- 27:28else is told that then that it's okay.
- 27:30You know, it's sort of like, yeah, might wanna might wanna tweak that a little bit just to
- 27:35help them.
- 27:36Yeah.
- 27:37I've but I would say the, I would say the, low fat thing is.
- 27:41Low fat is a big thing.
- 27:43And, when you say about flora in your in your tummy or your guts, are there things that you
- 27:49suggest, of course, good eating, right, like you heard I also hear about now I know a lot
- 27:53about macronutrients, like, you know, and because I'm the type that, I mean, go go go go
- 28:00go, but then now I try to think about having more fruits and, you know, like nuts and just
- 28:05having stuff in my car.
- 28:08In my in my in my in my, in my, briefcase, in my laptop bag, like, little, like, bags of,
- 28:14like, like, you know, like nuts and stuff like that or, you know, just because I know
- 28:18sometimes I'm stuck.
- 28:19Right?
- 28:19Like, if I'm if I'm booked solid with clients, sometimes I'm 6, 7 hours without the ability to
- 28:25really stop.
- 28:26Right?
- 28:27And So even being able to say, okay, take 5 minutes have something, but that takes
- 28:31planning.
- 28:32And I want you want you to talk, about planning because that you know, for myself and I have a
- 28:38son, as you know, and I look at my activities and his activities and kind of what we used to
- 28:44do to get him back and forth off hockey ranks and just all over, and you I would often see
- 28:49parents and the kids and they always had fast food bags in their hands.
- 28:56Right?
- 28:57So I know prep always for me because I always my son refuses to eat fast food.
- 29:03He and I thought there is a god.
- 29:05Yes.
- 29:05There is.
- 29:06Good for him.
- 29:08But I always was, you know, not into it anyway, but I think but it's still a lot of work.
- 29:13But it's not that it's a lot of work cooking.
- 29:15It's the prep I find before.
- 29:18So what kind of tips do you give people that help busy families that have 2 or 3 kids?
- 29:23Like, one kid's on one rink.
- 29:24One's kids are about to go to dance.
- 29:26The other is about to be picked up from soccer, like, it's dizzying and fast when you think
- 29:31about, and and you did learn a lot with women or mothers like me that are saying, how do I
- 29:35how do I do this?
- 29:37Yeah.
- 29:37How do I do it?
- 29:38Yeah.
- 29:40A couple of tips from my end.
- 29:41And and, you know, first off, I have to say, I applaud parents and especially mothers, the
- 29:48caregivers of the house.
- 29:50I don't personally have children, but I have worked with a lot of clients that do some of
- 29:55the things that, have definitely that we've looked at.
- 29:58Because the hard thing that can happen is you've got one child that'll eat this, one that
- 30:02won't eat that, and And then sometimes it's just overwhelming.
- 30:06And then maybe sometimes the kids don't end up eating it, and and that can be very frustrating
- 30:11when when you're paying and spending all that loving time, putting energy into cooking the
- 30:16food.
- 30:16So, batching is is huge.
- 30:20So when meal planning batching so that you have food, like, let's say, like, as an example, the
- 30:28soup that I did That will last me the next 3 to 4 days.
- 30:32I just made a massive thing of it.
- 30:36I looked for simplification, simplifying things to make it as easy as possible.
- 30:42So, you know, especially like now that we're in the winter season, it's like if anyone has
- 30:47crock pots, making soups or big batches of things that you can put in containers that you
- 30:52can put in the freezer.
- 30:54So especially if moms are out and they're taking their kids of sports.
- 30:58If, you know, you know, wifey or dads at home or whatever it may be, or vice versa, that it's
- 31:05like, hey, there's stuff in the freezer, put it out, bang it in the oven, you're good to go.
- 31:11I typically, for myself, it's like, you know, my partner and, he's a pilot as well.
- 31:18So we're constantly, you know, on the go.
- 31:21So exactly just as you said, in terms of, like, having mixed nuts, actually, I wish to sort of
- 31:27see.
- 31:27We have an array in the kitchen of just jars full of seeds, the nuts, and everything that we
- 31:33need so we can we can see when we need to sort of top it up, but I'll bring, you know, with me
- 31:39when I'm traveling.
- 31:40It's like mixed nuts, you know, I'll do like Cheers seed puddings and when I make that for
- 31:45breakfast, I will do four of them so that when I wake up in the morning, I've got my Cheers
- 31:50seed putting with my coconut yogurt and my blue berries.
- 31:54It's already in the jar.
- 31:55I pull it out, and it's ready to go.
- 31:58Going forward thinking of like, simplifying.
- 32:02You don't have to make it super fancy and over the top.
- 32:04And to be honest, if kids are old enough, parents should be telling them to get in the
- 32:09and then start learning for themselves.
- 32:11I I think that, you know, when I I learned cooking at school, and, you know, every now and
- 32:18then, mom and dad would be like, you know how to cook, get in the kitchen?
- 32:22I actually recently just, taught RJ how to he likes fit basic.
- 32:27He's very basic.
- 32:28It's, you know, but it's quick.
- 32:29It's like a chicken breast.
- 32:30I said, you know what?
- 32:31Here's a deal.
- 32:32Here's a chicken breast.
- 32:33It's thought you try it.
- 32:35Right?
- 32:35Because, you know, and then sitting there.
- 32:37I I didn't do it for him, and I just said, you know, you do it on low.
- 32:40Just a little bit of spices, a little bit of olive oil.
- 32:42He's seen me do it a million times.
- 32:44And then I said, you're just needing the middle to be opaque or solid.
- 32:49So he's like, does this work?
- 32:50He was but, again, think you're so right.
- 32:52It's some it took a bit more time.
- 32:54And then, you know, something really quick if you, you know, frozen vegetables.
- 32:58You put in the microwave.
- 32:59You couple minutes and, couple of spices on it.
- 33:03And those premade, you know, brown rice cups, I buy those because those are really easy it's
- 33:08going to do if it's not precooked, but you're you're still right teaching them the little
- 33:12things.
- 33:12And I mean, with him, he's a seventeen year old boy, so he's eating all the time.
- 33:17Yes.
- 33:17For me, I just do I'm like you, like, that's something I have to learn with my lifestyle is
- 33:22if I'm if I'm cooking something, I bulk it up.
- 33:24If I make chicken broth, I might make 10.
- 33:26And then I, you know, pre cook it and freeze it so you can pull one out, you know, same, just
- 33:31little things just really, really quick and something that I learned.
- 33:35I'm sure you probably go through a grocery list with your clients, lots of fruit, lots of
- 33:40vegetables, and then I try to figure out what the sides are that I do in bulk, and I just
- 33:44leave it in the fridge so I can put something on, you know, quickly.
- 33:48And, you know, I was just thinking to myself, like, one of the easiest things to do is, like,
- 33:53chopping up, like, I would regularly do, like, beetroot zucchini, sweet potato, and sometimes
- 34:00potatoes.
- 34:01And I would chop it up, put a bit of olive oil, and I'd do a massive put it in the oven, and
- 34:07that would give me, like, 3 days of just veggies.
- 34:10And sometimes I would just eat it on its own as is beautiful with chicken or fish on the side.
- 34:16And also another, like, good little tip that I like to give to people to simplify things yet
- 34:22again is like learn 1 new recipe once a week.
- 34:28Look for look for a simple recipe that's easy to do because if it becomes overwhelming, the
- 34:33resistance can come up.
- 34:35So pick something simple.
- 34:36And then once you know it and you've done it, next time when you're driving home from work
- 34:40and you're like, what am I gonna make for dinner?
- 34:42You go, do you know what?
- 34:43Awesome.
- 34:43I'm I'm gonna pop into the supermarket.
- 34:45I know what I need, and it doesn't take us long.
- 34:48I think sometimes it can become overwhelming when you gotta think too much.
- 34:52Already made too many decisions during the day.
- 34:54So if you've got some go tos and you're clear on what works for your body type, it just makes
- 35:00it so much easier.
- 35:02And I I think you're so right.
- 35:03Right?
- 35:03So it's it's to me, the thing is it's not about having to cook, but it's having everything that
- 35:09I need to cook.
- 35:11So I think it's, like, that's a preparing part that I find is, easier because then you have to
- 35:16think, oh, I gotta run to the store now.
- 35:18I, you know, I'm in between meetings.
- 35:19How am I gonna get that done?
- 35:21But if you, you know, so I try to kind of, you know, do that.
- 35:24I'm sure you tell your clients.
- 35:26And I see with, like, I had one son, I saw people with 3, 4 children, and I'm like, okay.
- 35:31I know how busy I am with my job and juggling with him and stuff like that, but I could and I
- 35:37could I could see the parents just trying to, you know, get one kid to one activity or, you
- 35:41know, and then they have full time jobs.
- 35:43It's it really so the stress level is real.
- 35:46Perry.
- 35:46Would you agree?
- 35:47And people like to be able to mindfully, which is basically what you're talking about.
- 35:51Sometimes it ends up being a bit of a, you know, an anomaly, people don't get those
- 35:57opportunities very, very often, to be able to do that.
- 36:00But I think it's like anything else.
- 36:01Like, I often say to people, You have to take even if it's a 5 minute break, you know, and
- 36:07sit in your office, close that door, shut everything off or listen to something that sues
- 36:13you.
- 36:14And even at that time, they probably could take the time just to eat a little bit and just slow
- 36:18their body down.
- 36:19A 100%.
- 36:21And, like, a little tip and trick for people is that, basically, if you sit there for 2 minutes
- 36:30and take some deep breaths, it will take your body from being in a stressful state to being
- 36:37in a relaxed state.
- 36:382 minutes is all it takes to bring the nervous system to feeling relaxed.
- 36:43So I I often do this, especially if I'm on a plane.
- 36:46Like, I'll sit there, you know, when you're rushing through the air when you finally get to
- 36:50sleep.
- 36:50It's like, take a moment to sit there and breathe.
- 36:53Don't do anything.
- 36:54Put everything down.
- 36:55Put your phone down.
- 36:56Take the 2 minutes.
- 36:57Bring it down.
- 36:58You can do it at your desk.
- 36:59You can do it in your car.
- 37:01You can do it while you're standing in the kitchen.
- 37:03It's free.
- 37:05And it works.
- 37:06It's scientifically proven.
- 37:08So taking, you know, you can apply that to anything as well.
- 37:13That's the coolest thing about taking that breath.
- 37:15Maybe in an argument.
- 37:17You know?
- 37:18Yeah.
- 37:19I have to see the people.
- 37:20We have 5 senses.
- 37:21Right?
- 37:21Like, if you do have a couple you know, minutes just to be able to enjoy that cup of tea and
- 37:26really, you know, experience it in your mouth or, you know, to think about to stop and listen
- 37:32to a piece of music that you really like or, you know, to have pictures, you know, on your
- 37:37phone of, you know, scenery or, who or what's important that really just brings us back out
- 37:43of that stress response because we're either in fight flight or freeze, and you keep that the
- 37:48body in that states they either go hyper or hypo.
- 37:52Right?
- 37:52And then like you said, then the body's the body's gonna hold on for dear life.
- 37:56I know that was stressed, but then they Again, you're talking about eating being an extension
- 38:00where the body actually doesn't do naturally take the nutrients that it needs and let's go
- 38:05on what it needs and just hold on to lots of the stuff that it doesn't need.
- 38:10Absolutely.
- 38:12Yeah.
- 38:12Yeah.
- 38:12So
- 38:13Any other quick mindfulness tips that you suggest?
- 38:17Or things that you you suggest?
- 38:19Like, do you suggest people, kind of, join?
- 38:24Do you suggest things like You did the you talked about the Arabic, which is interesting.
- 38:28So I don't know if you have a couple minutes just to talk about the mindfulness part to
- 38:32that.
- 38:32And, what kind of things you've learned and what you're gonna be applying to maybe your,
- 38:37coaching because of the exposure and value to the arabatic, way of eating.
- 38:42Yeah.
- 38:43So some of the biggest takeaways for me from doing the therapeutic yoga certification in
- 38:49Bali was Actually, the breath work that we did every morning, we spent an hour, each morning,
- 38:58of learning different breath techniques.
- 39:02Interesting enough, I was kinda like, how did I not know about the benefits of this up to date?
- 39:07And you know, it's it's sometimes it's funny you go through your life and then you learn
- 39:11something new and you think to yourself, wow, this existed this whole time.
- 39:16I would recommend, everybody looks up and goes to a breathing class There's plenty of them
- 39:26here in Toronto.
- 39:27You could look it up on YouTube.
- 39:29I think it would be nicer to experience being in a class and learning it because I don't
- 39:37quite think that we are exposed enough to the power of of breathing techniques You know?
- 39:43So these are just breathing techniques.
- 39:45They're you're not talking meditation.
- 39:47You're not talking yoga.
- 39:48You're just saying what we unconsciously do, we need to learn how to breathe properly.
- 39:53Absolutely.
- 39:54A 100%.
- 39:55Like and it's incredible, like because what happens is energies get stuck in our body, you
- 40:00know, it might be that that tension that you feel on your chest or that feeling you're
- 40:05feeling your stomach or the tension that we're holding in our shoulders.
- 40:08And when energies get stuck in our body, they to be released somehow.
- 40:12So the idea of pop work is continue to allow the energetic flow in the body.
- 40:18And, like, when you tap in and check-in with yourself before you start doing the breath work
- 40:23and then, you know, you check-in with yourself afterwards.
- 40:26How do I feel like Do I feel clearer?
- 40:28Do I feel lighter?
- 40:29And it's like night and day, it really is.
- 40:31So, I would recommend if anyone is feeling super, super stressed, like, Like, going to the
- 40:38gym is, like, my number 1, like, I love it, but there are other ways to, allow energy to flow
- 40:46out of the body and to feel relaxed and to do something good for yourself.
- 40:50So number 1, finding a breath work class, or going on YouTube, there's plenty of free stuff
- 40:56on there if if financially people are not wanting to spend the money on a class, Also, I
- 41:02would recommend that people go to a local meditation class as well or get headspace, the
- 41:07headspace app Okay.
- 41:09But do what I'd I love YouTube.
- 41:11This is so much free stuff on it.
- 41:12Every morning, I get up and put a different, meditation on from YouTube?
- 41:16That's how I started my morning this morning because I thought, okay.
- 41:19Well, let me because I know I have a busy day.
- 41:21So I just did that.
- 41:22And, you know, they say sit up.
- 41:24Right?
- 41:25Because guess what ends up happening?
- 41:26You end up falling back asleep.
- 41:28But, I mean, you're relaxed after 20 minutes.
- 41:31You know, you're you're kinda you know, reflect and and you slow down because you know you're
- 41:35gonna be go go go go go go, which kinda gives you that slowing even though you know, you
- 41:40know, you're gonna be in my case, 9, 10 hours today, different things, but just a a full day
- 41:46versus if you get up, you know, the alarm goes off, and you can start running.
- 41:50And then it, you know, your life gets dictated by everything outside of you.
- 41:55You know, and then by the mid, you know, middle of the afternoon, you're like, I'm cooked.
- 41:59I've run out of energy.
- 42:01You know?
- 42:02A 100%.
- 42:03And, you know, carving out, time for yourself in the morning, though, know it can be really
- 42:08difficult, especially if people have, like, like, really little babies and stuff at home.
- 42:13It can be hard, but, waking up if you're able to and giving yourself half an hour before you
- 42:21regularly would with your alarm, get up and do some journaling and read or get up and do some
- 42:26yoga or get up and do some meditation or half an hour for a worker.
- 42:29It doesn't have to be this grand thing, but taking time out just for you.
- 42:36That's just yours because you need to invest in you and you deserve it.
- 42:40When you're giving so much of your energy to everybody else during a day, you know, clients,
- 42:46bosses, everyone else.
- 42:47If you don't fill up your own car, everyone else will get a half version of you you won't
- 42:53like the half version of you that you're giving to everybody else, and then and then it can
- 42:57spiral just into a place where people are like, This is too much.
- 43:03So every day, you just take finding some time to fill up your car for sure.
- 43:07And then how it impacts the mental, right, because if you're go go go go go go go, and you
- 43:13have to sit down and focus on a document or something like that.
- 43:16That's when it's harder to focus.
- 43:18So to really recognize that this investment that you're making throughout the day, you're
- 43:23you're putting the, you know, the deposits in a bit at a time.
- 43:26It may be only 5 minutes a month or 2 It made me two that I'm gonna sit here, and I'm just
- 43:31gonna close my eyes and, you know, you know, feel my breath and feel the breath at the
- 43:37bottom of my nose, but is like slowing my body down, to be able to kind of, you know, get
- 43:43through things a a bit at a time versus I have not stopped for 10 hours, and I am, you know,
- 43:48and then you go home.
- 43:49And if you're, you you know, your family's there or your partner's there or people around
- 43:54you, you have nothing left to give to what really what's what's important.
- 43:58A 100%.
- 43:59And and that's the other thing too.
- 44:01I think as well if you've got like a really supportive partner, and there are children at
- 44:07home trying to coordinate to allow space during the week.
- 44:11Hey, honey.
- 44:12Can you take the kids like, so that you're able to go to a session or you're able to go and
- 44:18have that time with your girlfriends for a coffee.
- 44:20I think it's important as as well for people to make sure that they're making, themselves
- 44:26important during the week without necessarily you know, some stresses around them, if that's
- 44:32possible.
- 44:32I understand everyone's life skills are different, but if they're able to carve out
- 44:36that time, then that way yet again, they're a fuller version of themselves.
- 44:40They've got that time to look forward to, and it's not just them constantly giving to the
- 44:45kids, giving to the boss.
- 44:47Yep.
- 44:48To everything outside of you, right, because that becomes a point when you have to start
- 44:52replenishing yourself.
- 44:53And and it like you said, it doesn't opportunity to people.
- 44:55It doesn't have to be a Pilates class.
- 44:57That's an hour a half or, you know, or the gym.
- 45:00It could be something as, okay.
- 45:02I'm gonna go outside.
- 45:03And I've got 15 minutes of our lunch.
- 45:05I'm gonna, you know, eat something really quickly, and I'm gonna go from brisk walk, get
- 45:10out, get some oxygen, And then I come back and I feel alive because then I've I've gotten more
- 45:15breaths.
- 45:16I've more oxygen oxygenation in my brain.
- 45:19I'm clearer.
- 45:20I've shifted, and we know that with optimal, you know, functioning, and all the research,
- 45:25it's like, do something.
- 45:27Take a make a shift.
- 45:28If you're doing something physical, maybe slow down.
- 45:31If you're doing something, that's focused then shifting.
- 45:34And then then that way the body and the brain kinda starts to work in concert with each
- 45:39other.
- 45:39Okay.
- 45:39This has all been really, really, interesting stuff.
- 45:43I'm sure everyone, this thing would love to learn, a lot more about things.
- 45:48And I know you have, something that you, are doing a a promotion so why don't you tell
- 45:54everyone about the promotion and where they can get a hold of you so that, you know, if they're
- 45:59interested in learning more, just about some of the wonderful things that you've shared today.
- 46:03Awesome.
- 46:04Yeah.
- 46:04Definitely.
- 46:05So right now, as we're leading up to 2019, I have a offer.

- 47:21Absolutely.
- 47:22And if anybody's wanting more information on, Carrie, they can definitely get a hold of me.
- 47:28And I will facilitate, making sure that you get connected.
- 47:33Okay.
- 47:33I've learned a lot of really good things today, and I think some of my takeaways is, that's
- 47:39slowing so that the body can take what it needs.
- 47:44I think that's a I really I love that because, you know, I don't think of it in generally, I I
- 47:50when I when I coach or I, speak to people, I don't put it in that context with food, but
- 47:55it's kinda giving me a good angle with people to really because, really, if you're in that
- 48:01hyper or or frozen state and you're depleted, the body saying, I don't know what to do here.
- 48:08Mhmm.
- 48:09Right?
- 48:09So I think really nutritionally, it does the same thing.
- 48:12Like you said, if if you if you don't let the body know it's okay to receive what it needs
- 48:17and to let go of what it needs, then you're you're you're out of balance technically, which
- 48:23is what I talk a lot with stress management and stuff like that.
- 48:26So thank you.
- 48:27That was a really an insight and something I probably will use as I kinda hold people on
- 48:31balance.
- 48:32And, and also just about, the the breath, the breath, the importance of breathing, and even
- 48:39to suggest a breathing class, I hadn't thought about that.
- 48:42I think that was something that would be quite interesting for people to consider.
- 48:46So everyone, again, Carrie, thanks so much for being here.
