- 0:45SPEAKER_00: Hi there and welcome to another episode of Rise Up, Live Joy Your Way.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: I am Comedy Wood, and I am grateful that you decided to take time out of your day to join me here.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: Whether it's your morning, afternoon, or evening, I appreciate you taking a few minutes to spend with me.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: Today I wanted to touch on the topic of happiness and its importance to our well-being.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: You know, there are different types of well-being.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: There's the hedonic well-being, which is the form of happiness which comes from the feeling that that good feeling that comes with experiencing positive emotions like bliss and the hedonic well-being is considered short-lived.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: It's those spurts of ha of bliss and happiness and momentary joy, versus the eudynamic well-being, uh, which is the umbrella term, which refers to the deeper kind of happiness, which comes from having a meaning and a purpose in life, and is often experienced as a sense of satisfaction through achievement.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: It's a concept that actually originates with Aristotle and means living well and doing well.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: And it's used to describe that sense of functioning well and flourishing.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: And uh the advantage of this type of happiness is that it doesn't have to be inbuilt limitation, right?
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: So it's it's a sustainable form of well-being.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: And so, you know, many times we we think about being happy and we're just, you know, what's is there a deeper purpose or is there deeper benefits to finding happiness and finding ways to bring that emotion of happiness into our everyday life?
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: So I just wanted to touch on some of the health benefits that come along with creating a habit of happiness.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: One is improved heart health.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: So there have been several studies linked to happiness with improved heart health and the lower risk of heart disease.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: Secondly, it being happier, having a habit of happiness and being able to have that flexible thinking capability and look for nuggets of positivity and happiness in even the most complex situations allows us to combat stress more effectively.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: Because when we are able to, uh when we've built up that muscle and that happy habit of happiness, when we are under stress and we're able to think flexibly and look for nuggets of growth or nuggets of positivity, we're able to reduce the cortisol levels and that fight or flight level comes back down, which allows us to be able to combat stress in a more effective manner.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: Happiness has, there's been research that has indicated that happiness and being happier can actually support a stronger immune system.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: Again, when you're not consistently in that high stress zone and that fight or flight zone, you're able to combat and fight off infections and diseases more effectively.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: And of course, happiness has been linked to several positive uh beneficial health habits, such as, you know, eating healthier, engaging in more physical activity.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: Again, because when you are positivity breeds positivity.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: So when you are able to increase your habit of happiness, look for the good, even in the most dire of circumstances, you're building that ability to see things in a different way.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: And it actually puts your emotional state and your mental state in a different perspective.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: And so you're actually intrinsically motivated to do things like eat healthier or to get more sleep or to exercise more.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: And in essence, what happens when we create this habit of happiness, we're able to actually increase our life's longevity.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: The research actually has shown a connection between happiness and positive health benefits such that people actually live longer when they have a habit of happiness.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: So it goes on beyond just your personal life, though.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: I mean, even in the workplace, when we have a habit of happiness, we are able to open up that creative part of our brains.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: And so, for instance, when we're in the workplace and we're facing an issue or a problem that we're trying to solve, because we're my our minds are in a more creative space, we are able to think more creatively and we're able to problem solve rather than simply be tunnel vision as there's only one answer to this question.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: It also increases team productivity, right?
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: So if we're in the workplace and we show up and we're we're um coming with a positive attitude and we have appreciation and gratitude for our teammates, for instance, it builds that deeper connection with our teammates, which overall creates a happier atmosphere in the workplace itself.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: And when everybody's in a better place, team productivity actually increases.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: And when team productivity increases and people are caring about their work, the work product is better, which of course then ends up resulting in better client-customer satisfaction or client customer service satisfaction.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: And so when we think about it, when we take on the responsibility to figure out how to implement different happiness habits in our daily lives, it actually can exponentially increase other areas of our life in terms of deeper connection with others, you know, our own emotional well-being, our own physical well-being.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: And likewise, it can actually increase our productivity at work as well as create the space within our team at work to create a happier workplace environment, such that then even our employer ends up having success, all dialed back and traced back to our putting in place happiness habits.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: So hopefully today you learned a little bit of why when people say, you know, be happy, don't worry, be happy.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: There's a little bit of truth to that where it's, you know, the more we spend time worrying about things or looking at the negative, we tend to stay in that place.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: We tend to stay in that fight or flight, flight place.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: And sometimes it's just best to figure out ways where we can start implementing habits of happiness in order to start building upon positive things and really building ourselves up that emotional positivity ladder and being able to find you know success as well as deeper connections with our loved ones as well as with our teammates, with our friends, and really have full and engaged lives.
