- 1:17Welcome to Mortgage Marketing Radio brought to you by the Mortgage Marketing Institute.
- 1:22For a number one source for truth in mortgage marketing.
- 1:32Hey listeners, Jeff Zimfer.
- 1:33Welcome to this episode of the Mortgage Marketing Radio podcast.
- 1:35I am so happy you've decided to tune in.
- 1:38I know you've got a lot of choices with your time and attention and I appreciate you giving
- 1:42me just a little piece of that time and attention today.
- 1:44My goal is on every episode to make this as impactful as possible for you.
- 1:50So as always, this podcast is brought to you by the Mortgage Marketing Pro membership.
- 1:55Look here we are in June, right?
- 1:57It is midway point of 2019.
- 1:59The markets hot, rates are low, activities high.
- 2:02This is the time to double down and get active in your local market.
- 2:04This is the time to go to where the business is happening right now.
- 2:08Right now, what's the shortest path you've got to getting in front of buyers in your local
- 2:14market?
- 2:15Yes, I know refires are happening but don't make the mistake that so many loan officers
- 2:18make of neglecting their purchase business and going all in on the refi.
- 2:23You've got to manage both.
- 2:24You've got to be able to be a juggler, right?
- 2:27National juggling day was June 15th.
- 2:28Well, hey, you got to be a juggler through the rest of June and perhaps the rest of this
- 2:32summer as well.
- 2:33But now is the time for you to invest as well in those referral relationships, those partner
- 2:38relationships, real estate agents.
- 2:40It's the shortest, quickest path to getting yourself in front of the flow of buyer activity
- 2:44that's happening in your local market right now.
- 2:47Why is that the case?
- 2:48Because eight out of 10 people still use a realtor to buy a home and I forget the exact
- 2:53percentage, but roughly 60% of the transactions that happen in a local market happen with
- 2:59a real estate agent and those transactions come from past clients referrals and sphere of
- 3:04influence.
- 3:05So you're tapping into that expanded network, building your own sphere of influence,
- 3:08you're expanding your network by intelligently and effectively partnering with real estate
- 3:13agents, adding value and building a true partnership, not a vendor arrangement.
- 3:18Now, if you're looking for better strategies and ways to do that, well, let me tell you
- 3:21about the sponsor of this podcast, which is the mortgage marketing pro membership.
- 3:27What is that you ask?
- 3:28It is done for you aging classes, social media courses, skills training, sales training,
- 3:33scripts and more to help you get more agent referrals, grow your business and become a
- 3:37modern mortgage originator.
- 3:39In fact, I've got a success story to share with you by two of my favorite people.
- 3:44If you're listening, Jill and Rob Garrison from Michigan Mortgage, what is up?
- 3:48Great to connect with you in person at the recent mastermind summit in Vegas.
- 3:51Jill and Rob say, thank you for creating great content for us to share with our referral
- 3:56partners.
- 3:57This has just been awesome to spend more time in front of real estate offices, less time
- 4:00creating content, just what we had hoped for.
- 4:03When I met with Rob and Jill, they're doing about 20 loans a month, I think.
- 4:07And they're doing a consistent schedule of a variety of different things, part of which
- 4:10includes done for you, turn key agent classes delivered to you by yours truly in the mortgage
- 4:15marketing pro membership as well as a host of other tools and resources.
- 4:18If you want to learn more, go check it out, mortgagemarketing.pro.
- 4:21You've got a short video we put up there that explains everything.
- 4:25Secondly, podcast listeners, what is up?
- 4:27What is up?
- 4:28Shout out to you.
- 4:29Thank you for tuning in on this episode.
- 4:30I always like to give a shout out to my listeners and this one comes from an iTunes
- 4:35review.
- 4:36It says A Medford 2007 on repeat as a new MLO.
- 4:42This show has been on repeat during my workouts and while learning, I love the variety of interviews
- 4:47and there's so much great information to take in and apply.
- 4:52Thank you.
- 4:53A Medford 2007.
- 4:54Hey, there's a podcast t-shirt in it for you.
- 4:57Hit me up on Facebook, PM me, tell me your address, your shirt size and we'll get you
- 5:01a podcast.
- 5:02It's a podcast with a big, awesome, orange logo on the blue microphone on there.
- 5:06You can wear that proudly while you're working out or hanging on at Starbucks and people
- 5:09ask you, what's that all about?
- 5:11All right.
- 5:12With that said, let me get into this week's episode.
- 5:14It is my second time featuring give back homes and originally they were one of my early
- 5:21guests way back.
- 5:22I think it was April of 2016.
- 5:25This podcast was started in January of 2016.
- 5:29Just grateful that they were able to make time to come back because the story is one
- 5:33you need to know about and hear and if you haven't found yet that place for you to give
- 5:39back to get renewed, to recharge by selflessly contributing to others in a way that makes
- 5:48true value and difference.
- 5:50This might be the opportunity for you.
- 5:52Listen closely to this podcast because you heard my previous interview with Mark Schaefer,
- 5:57the author of Marketing Rebellion, where he talks about how the most human company wins.
- 6:03Let me share with you another quote that I pulled off the give back home's Facebook page.
- 6:07This quote's by Bob Goff.
- 6:10It's just, it sums it all up.
- 6:11Okay.
- 6:12Here we go.
- 6:13We won't be distracted by comparison if we are captivated by purpose.
- 6:20Wow.
- 6:22We won't be distracted by comparison if we are captivated by purpose.
- 6:29I read that just before we hit record on this episode and I was like, oh, impactful.
- 6:34I was like, man, that sums it all up right there.
- 6:37Many of you listening are listening because you're looking for that slight edge, you're looking
- 6:41for ideas to help you rise above the noise, to show up differently, to get chosen.
- 6:47It's a hyper competitive, very noisy market out there.
- 6:50How do you rise above the noise, get chosen?
- 6:53How do you not be compared to others in the market?
- 6:59One of the ways to do that is to be about something more than just getting alone mortgages
- 7:05or real estate.
- 7:06It's to be about purpose and that's why give back homes is so relevant for real estate
- 7:11and mortgage professionals because they help you captivate and get attention based on purpose.
- 7:18The conversation isn't about price.
- 7:20It's about the impact and the difference that you're making in the local market.
- 7:23We got special two special guests with us on today's episode, bringing back Caroline
- 7:29Pennell, who is one of the co-founders of give back homes who was on the original podcast
- 7:33with the other co-founder Blake back in 2016.
- 7:37We have top real estate professional Jessica Northrop from the Denver Colorado area who's
- 7:43a superstar.
- 7:44She's with Compass Real Estate.
- 7:45She's been doing a real estate for 24 years.
- 7:47She is a top producer, dare I say mega producer.
- 7:51You're going to hear her story about her involvement in give back homes.
- 7:54What about it attracted her to it, the impact and difference that's made in her life and
- 7:59her business and her personal brand locally.
- 8:02We're going to talk about how give back homes helps equip you as a real estate and mortgage
- 8:06professional to have your brand be about more than just real estate that drives engagement.
- 8:13A conversation creates awareness and ultimately leads to business for you.
- 8:17There's going to be links in the show notes.
- 8:19When you hear us talk about if you want to get involved in a build project that Jessica
- 8:22has going on.
- 8:23If you want to learn more about give back homes, you can go to givebackhomes.com, check the
- 8:26links for the show notes.
- 8:27You want to reach out to my special guests and ask questions.
- 8:31Links are in the show notes.
- 8:33I hope you're going to appreciate this episode as much as I did and enjoyed having the conversation.
- 8:38Folks, get involved somewhere.
- 8:41Maybe give back homes.
- 8:42For you, maybe it's not, I don't know, but that's one of the reasons why I wanted to bring
- 8:44it to you.
- 8:45Many of you are looking for that place to get involved, get connected, make a difference.
- 8:49This might be it for you.
- 8:50Hope you enjoyed this episode.
- 8:52Let's get into this week's show.
- 8:55Welcome to the show, Jessica and Caroline.
- 8:58Thank you.
- 8:59Hello.
- 9:00All right.
- 9:01Let's do this.
- 9:02As always, whenever I have two guests on, I have to allow you guys to introduce yourself
- 9:03so people know who you are by voice.
- 9:06Caroline, why don't you go first?
- 9:09Hello, everybody.
- 9:10My name is Caroline.
- 9:11I'm the co-founder of Give Back Homes, which is a community of real estate professionals
- 9:15who are all dedicated to giving back to their local communities and throughout the world.
- 9:20Awesome.
- 9:21Hey, Jessica.
- 9:22Hi, how are you?
- 9:23Good.
- 9:24Tell us who you are.
- 9:25My name is Jessica Northrop, and I am a real estate broker in Denver, Colorado.
- 9:28I've been licensed for 24 years, and I'm also a proud member of Give Back Homes.
- 9:33Wow.
- 9:3424 years.
- 9:35Congratulations.
- 9:36Thank you.
- 9:37Awesome.
- 9:38So glad you guys are both here for the listeners' little background, because since
- 9:40you and I originally talked Caroline, this podcast has grown a lot, and I think you
- 9:45guys were like in season one, if you will, how crazy is that sound.
- 9:50But I think that was back in 2016, if I remember correctly.
- 9:54And I was really attracted to you guys because I'm a big believer in obviously finding something
- 9:59that we can be passionate about.
- 10:02That's not just work related, but a cause or something we can get behind.
- 10:06And then I saw you guys with Give Back Homes connecting real estate, if you will, housing
- 10:11and matching that up with helping real estate mortgage professionals step up there.
- 10:14They're not only their brand, but also simultaneously feel good about, you know, being involved in
- 10:20this industry and providing a way for people to give back through real estate.
- 10:27Did I sum that up fairly?
- 10:29You did.
- 10:30Yeah.
- 10:31That was great.
- 10:32Thank you.
- 10:33Yeah.
- 10:34We've, and a lot has happened since we first talked in April 2016.
- 10:37I mean, congratulations on all of your growth as well.
- 10:40And, you know, we're really excited about where we've, you know, taken this to since then
- 10:44we've built nearly 400 homes for families in Central America.
- 10:48And we just celebrated our 80th US build day as well, just affordable housing here in
- 10:53the United States.
- 10:55Our Chicago build day last week was our 80th build day, so yeah, we're pumped.
- 11:01That's fantastic.
- 11:02And okay.
- 11:03So here's what we're going to do.
- 11:04We're going to go back and forth in this conversation.
- 11:05And we've got a lot of ground to cover in a relatively short period of time.
- 11:10So Jessica, when did you get involved with give back homes?
- 11:13Also in 2016, that's when I was introduced to give back homes.
- 11:16Okay.
- 11:17And when you saw it, like what, if you go back to like when you first saw it or heard
- 11:21about it, what about it kind of connected for you?
- 11:25What connected was my managing broker at the time, Ryan C. Crest.
- 11:30He had been, I'm going to give back homes.
- 11:32And he actually showed me a build date where he's actually able to go on the build date
- 11:36stick, or Agua, and beyond the ground, doing the build, he's dirty.
- 11:40And that's what really kind of like intrigued me, excited me.
- 11:43Sometimes we spend money or we send money or our time, but actually being able to go and
- 11:48do the build was what was really kind of like captured me.
- 11:51Right.
- 11:52Yeah.
- 11:53Ryan's a very good friend of both of ours, an awesome member of give back homes.
- 11:57They're brokerage in, he has a, he's a managing broker at Venture Sotheby's.
- 12:01That's in Plezans in California, but he traveled with us on our very first build trip to
- 12:06Nicaragua.
- 12:07He was on that trip.
- 12:08So, and then he like introduced Jessica and I via email, I don't think Jessica and I
- 12:12had even met in person.
- 12:14And Jessica immediately respond on the email, I was like, I'm in, I want to go to Nicaragua,
- 12:18I want to go help build a home.
- 12:19What do I got to do?
- 12:20I'll book my flight.
- 12:21Like she was like instantly.
- 12:22And I was like, I knew right then, I was like, Jessica and I are going to be friends.
- 12:26She's the kind of person we need to give back homes.
- 12:28That we've been so grateful ever since.
- 12:32How does Jessica, how does your involvement in give back homes, I know you're involved
- 12:35in other charitable organizations and things like that and causes.
- 12:39How does your involvement with give back homes differ or make you feel differently?
- 12:43Yep.
- 12:44I think it just pairs perfectly with our profession.
- 12:47I think real estate professionals, work as professionals are seen or should be seen as
- 12:51community leaders.
- 12:52And something that we can do to help everyone find their place in the world.
- 12:56There's a little compass over there.
- 12:58I'm completely in a pot.
- 13:00We can connect people, our clients, our community and directly impact those who are in
- 13:06meat.
- 13:07Okay.
- 13:08Love it, love it.
- 13:09Yeah.
- 13:10And it just made a lot of sense when I saw that the docs really connected as well, which
- 13:14is like we talked about before, we have to set something up for you here in Vegas, find
- 13:18some kind of build project, Jessica, Caroline in Vegas.
- 13:21For sure.
- 13:22Okay.
- 13:23So Jessica, you've been to Nicaragua.
- 13:25You did a build project down there, right?
- 13:27Yes, I have.
- 13:28And also you're doing stuff locally in Denver, your surrounding area.
- 13:31Yep.
- 13:32My goal every year is to fund and build dates internationally and also to build on a
- 13:37build date here locally in Denver.
- 13:39And so far, Jessica's built two homes for families in Nicaragua and two buildings in
- 13:46Denver, right?
- 13:47And then this next one coming up in August to be your third build day.
- 13:50So basically she's not human.
- 13:53We don't know how she has the time to do all this, but she's amazing.
- 13:58And we're excited to continue building upon what she's created.
- 14:02Okay.
- 14:03So, all right, before we hit record, I was kind of talking about a little project I have
- 14:08this book and it's all about surviving that the digital shift.
- 14:13And I know branding is important for real estate, it's important for mortgage, it's important
- 14:17just across the board.
- 14:19And I don't have to tell you Jessica about differentiation and personal branding.
- 14:22So I'm curious then to what, how has this impacted your business, right?
- 14:27Just your involvement with this cause locally?
- 14:30Yep.
- 14:31Well, to backtrack a little bit, you know, I think we can all work really hard.
- 14:35We can grind in our brand.
- 14:38For me, I think it came to a point where you work so hard, you're doing all these things.
- 14:43And then I still felt, I don't know if the word is emptiness, but a lack of fulfillment.
- 14:48And so I think I was looking for something in my business to kind of bridge that gap
- 14:53and create fulfillment.
- 14:54And that's when I found get back homes.
- 14:56And so being able to, yes, work, build my brand and make money, but also make an impact
- 15:01is what kind of bridged the gap for me and completed my business.
- 15:05And yeah, it's been very impactful, you know, growing your business, your brand, you're
- 15:08kind of seen as some of a leader, someone giving back to the community.
- 15:11So it's naturally, I think, has built increase my business.
- 15:14And the bigger picture for me is what's done for me personally.
- 15:17No, that's a good way you used emptiness and that kind of goes back to what you said
- 15:23earlier.
- 15:24It's easy for us to like cut a check and be at arm's length, right, involved with charities,
- 15:29but with you guys, we're talking about getting dirty, right?
- 15:32I think you're getting dirty.
- 15:34For sure.
- 15:35And especially, especially to go down to Nicaragua and like that's, that's transformational
- 15:40experience.
- 15:41Yes?
- 15:42For me, for sure.
- 15:43Yeah.
- 15:44I, you know, I, you, we went the first day and you see the family.
- 15:48These are people, not just one little community, it's entire country living in poverty, living
- 15:52in fact, living on dirt floors, pull up, Americans coming in there.
- 15:57There's a little bit of maybe awkwardness at the beginning, but as we're working with
- 16:01the families, they start to see the transformation over that two to three day period.
- 16:06You can see the pride, their eyes, the excitement, their eyes.
- 16:09This is going to make an impact on them for many years to come.
- 16:12And that was really rewarding to see.
- 16:14Does your involvement with Get Back Homes kind of drive you, right, to continue to grow
- 16:20and work hard?
- 16:21Absolutely.
- 16:22Absolutely.
- 16:23The more, at the end of the day, we can, again, go back, we can grind, we can work, and
- 16:27then, the moment you stop marketing, the moment you start spending money, what's left?
- 16:31Mm-hmm.
- 16:32What's the legacy that you're leaving?
- 16:34Yeah, exactly, right?
- 16:36Like you said, the empty feeling.
- 16:39Caroline, on your Facebook page, for Get Back Homes, I just brought it up this morning.
- 16:44There's a quote on there by Bob Goff, which was really impactful.
- 16:49It says, we won't be distracted by comparison if we are captivated by purpose.
- 16:56And I was like, wow, did you want to do it, right?
- 17:00Yeah.
- 17:01Thank you for taking a look at the Facebook page and for appreciating our quotes that
- 17:05we threw out there.
- 17:07Well, and I think the reason why that jumped out for me is obviously in preparing for
- 17:10this conversation.
- 17:11I'm thinking of the multiple threads I'm trying to play here, which is, you know, yes,
- 17:15giving back, getting involved in something that fills us up and allows us to contribute
- 17:20to the world.
- 17:21That's something we all should do, whatever that is.
- 17:23Get Back Homes is one great thing.
- 17:25However, at the same time, we all know, right, there's this phrase called, cause marketing.
- 17:29You've done the research.
- 17:30You've seen it that, by and large, given a choice between company A, company B, company
- 17:34A's involved with a cause, such as a lot of time shoes.
- 17:37And we can talk about that story, right?
- 17:39People will choose the company that's involved with a cause versus the one that doesn't,
- 17:43assuming all of the things are equal now.
- 17:46So that goes into this quote, which was like really bam right in the chest.
- 17:49It hit me.
- 17:50It's like today, right, in the context of real estate and mortgage, people are distracted
- 17:54by comparison, right?
- 17:56100%.
- 17:57Because there's all this media, like, you know, it's all based on price and discounters
- 18:02and disruptors and low price and reduce your career.
- 18:05But people are attracted to something that's about something more than just price at purpose.
- 18:11Exactly.
- 18:12So I'm kind of teaming this up if there's some relevancy, maybe, to talk about that, right?
- 18:16And how that plays into when real estate professionals get involved with Get Back Homes, do you
- 18:20think that has a play?
- 18:22I mean, absolutely.
- 18:23Everyone is human instincts for everybody to want to try and seek out purpose in their
- 18:28life in one way or the other.
- 18:31And so what we've done has really made it very easy for them to incorporate it into
- 18:34their everyday business and to include their clients in the process as well.
- 18:39Jessica had some stories of when, you know, she shares with her clients, you know, what
- 18:42during her listing presentation and things like that, she gets to the part where she says,
- 18:46you know, what the sell this home, I'm going to be building a home for a family in need.
- 18:50And she can probably speak to what kind of, how that creates a different kind of bonded
- 18:54connection with your, with your clients.
- 18:57Mm-hmm.
- 18:58Yeah, tell us about that, Jessica.
- 18:59How do you integrate your, your Give Back Homes story, right, in your listing presence
- 19:03or however?
- 19:04Yeah, two care lines point.
- 19:06I always, at the end, say, you know, love selling real estate, but I also, I'm very
- 19:10passionate about giving back and the charity that I've chosen to partner with is Give Back
- 19:15Homes.
- 19:16And so out of the sale of this home, we're going to help build a home for a family in need.
- 19:19And I share that with them.
- 19:20I have some obviously marketing pieces that I leave there.
- 19:23It usually is a, something people want to, that's, if you're looking to be different,
- 19:28that's something that's different.
- 19:29Catching, they've listened to your boring listing presentation for the end.
- 19:34That gives them something to kind of capture to grasp on to, ask about.
- 19:38We use signs.
- 19:39That's another great thing.
- 19:40Give Back Homes a little like offer, name writers for our signs, different things that
- 19:44people at something they can talk about their friends.
- 19:46Oh, give Back Homes.
- 19:47What is that?
- 19:48Oh, we'll sell our house, our agent, you know, helps build homes for families in need,
- 19:53which I think is great.
- 19:55One of the best stories that I've had was at a closing.
- 19:58I'll bring, you know, there's three different families, which family, you know,
- 20:01when I get to the end, and I'm ready to go in the house, I go to my client.
- 20:05I'll say, here are the three different profiles for families who are in need.
- 20:09I want you to choose which family you would like to build the home for.
- 20:13And so they read through them.
- 20:14And I have a lady say, oh, definitely this one, Martha.
- 20:17I want Martha.
- 20:18That's my grandmother and I want to be built in her honor.
- 20:20And then she went back to social media and said to sell our house.
- 20:24This is what it did.
- 20:25And, you know, that's nice to have that extra little marketing piece from your,
- 20:28from your clients as well.
- 20:29And they're thankful.
- 20:30Wow.
- 20:31So I want to make sure I understand that you're sitting at the closing table, right?
- 20:34Yes.
- 20:35And are you, do you actually have like pictures of the various?
- 20:40Yeah.
- 20:41Give Back Homes a provided profile.
- 20:42So I'll have a picture of the family and say, whatever.
- 20:46Martha lives with her three grandchildren in the back of a little shack.
- 20:51You know, she works for whatever $10 a month.
- 20:54It'll be the whole profile telling about that family.
- 20:57And then they can actually choose what, who we're going to build the home for,
- 21:00which is really cool.
- 21:01Wow.
- 21:02I mean, who doesn't just kind of get, you know, melt like that, right?
- 21:06And make sure clients feel special.
- 21:08I mean, that, that, that hits home, it doesn't make a big impact.
- 21:13Well, and it's like, um, it's like the, the quote from, from Jeff Bezos on branding.
- 21:17It's, it's what people say about you when you're not in the room is branding.
- 21:21And I'm sure, and it's all about creating that amazing customer experience.
- 21:24We all know that today, but the question is, how do you do that?
- 21:27Uh, it reminds me, and I'm full of quotes and cliches this morning.
- 21:30But, uh, from a previous podcast, I interviewed Mark Schaefer, author of marketing,
- 21:35rebellion, and the tagline to his book is, um, the most human company wins.
- 21:41And I think that's, if that were to sum it up with, give Back Homes,
- 21:44I think that what, that's what that does to a degree is it helps.
- 21:48Right humanize, like you said, the dry, boring listing president takes kind of
- 21:52all the usual stuff about real estate and changes it to, to, to a more of a human element.
- 21:58And if that, if everything is the same, same listing presentation or agents,
- 22:02we're always trying to be different.
- 22:03That's a different, that's, that's the study you apart.
- 22:06Same as lame.
- 22:07That's right.
- 22:10All right.
- 22:10So I know, I like on your website, give back homes.com.
- 22:12There's lots of different success stories on there.
- 22:15Um, one I use,
- 22:18uh, in my, it's a matter of fact, so, so I'll say this right now.
- 22:20I don't know if I mentioned this to you before Caroline.
- 22:22I think I did.
- 22:23But for those that are listening, um, and are not part,
- 22:26this isn't meant to be a plug or whatever, but here's the thing.
- 22:29I was so passionate about give back homes and what you guys are doing.
- 22:31I included in, I included it in one of the presentations that I, um,
- 22:36design and create for loan officers to give the real estate agents.
- 22:39And it's all about millennial marketing.
- 22:41And there's some facts in there about, and you can speak to this Carolina,
- 22:44perhaps about, right?
- 22:45Millennials like to do business with cause related companies.
- 22:48Um, and so I put that in there and, and hopes to drive awareness and
- 22:52attention for give back homes and hopefully some agents choose to get involved.
- 22:56But, um, there's one, the one testimony all I have in there,
- 23:00and I'd love to like add, add yours in there Jessica now as well.
- 23:03But it's from another Jessica Jessica foot and pow away.
- 23:07Um, who, uh, on, on your website here, it says she got a listing just
- 23:11from her give back homes listing page because her, uh,
- 23:13seller was passionate about giving back.
- 23:16Mm hmm. Yeah, I mean, we hear stories like that all the time.
- 23:19You and our very first member, um, you know, Nick Schneider,
- 23:22when he first took out a full page ad in his local, you know, magazine,
- 23:26real estate magazine, he got 10 calls directly from the ad, you know,
- 23:29some of the more people who are just calling to say, I love what you're doing.
- 23:32That's amazing, you know, keep it up.
- 23:34And some of them were actual, you know, direct leads and things that led to an
- 23:38actual transaction.
- 23:39So, um, it's happening all the time.
- 23:41And Jessica was featured in what, which are the Denver Post cherry Creek magazine,
- 23:47like a bunch of other magazines for because people find out what,
- 23:50what they're doing.
- 23:51And it's such a cool, unique thing that people want to share that story.
- 23:54Yeah, absolutely.
- 23:56How else do you equip, uh, real estate professionals, Caroline,
- 23:59to, to kind of embed this into the overall brand?
- 24:03What are the cool tools do you give them?
- 24:05I mean, we have tools as simple as the social media toolkit,
- 24:07which is like all of those graphics, like the, like the quote,
- 24:10graphic that you saw, but in all different formats, you know,
- 24:13so they're ready to go for your Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, all that sort of stuff.
- 24:17We also provide them with how to start a fundraiser, how to do a volunteering
- 24:22event, how to read your own build day, like how Jessica does in Denver.
- 24:27You know, how to talk about this at a listing appointment.
- 24:30We also provide them with PR support, you know, like getting local media to your
- 24:36build day and that sort of thing, um, trying to think what else?
- 24:40And just our kind of, our support as well, um, just kind of guiding them and,
- 24:45and talking with them on, okay, so you did this, this year, like you want to increase
- 24:49your giving goals for next year or what can we do, change it up?
- 24:52So we kind of strategize with them on their giving goals year after year.
- 24:57Yeah, all right.
- 24:58So let me ask you this, uh, for instance, Jessica has a build day coming up in Denver,
- 25:01right? Um, and we're going to talk about that.
- 25:03And then on your Facebook page, I can see you've got, um, a section dedicated to
- 25:07that Northrop group, Northrop group Denver build day, uh, how do you guys help,
- 25:12like in Jessica, Jessica's case, tell us about how you help her or other
- 25:16people is to coordinate a build day locally?
- 25:19I mean, we do everything for them helping coordinate the signups, um,
- 25:22creating the invites to giving them a timeline.
- 25:24Okay, you're one month out from your build day.
- 25:26It's time to use an e-blast out to your friends, family and clients posted on
- 25:30your social media multiple times.
- 25:32We start collecting RSVPs.
- 25:33We coordinate t-shirts, lunches.
- 25:35Uh, we make sure everyone's prepared, you know, before the build day, during
- 25:39after we send the photographer to capture the day, um, and possibly some,
- 25:45some local media as well.
- 25:46So yeah.
- 25:48And then we help with the recap as well and, um, sharing the stories afterwards.
- 25:52And how does that work in terms of in the local area, like in Jessica's case,
- 25:56was, did, uh, give back homes already have a, a build project going on?
- 26:02Yes.
- 26:02So we partnered with Habitat for Humanity Denver.
- 26:05Um, so we've partnered with them.
- 26:06We've probably done over 10 buildings in Denver alone.
- 26:09Um, but, yeah, so there are, our building partner there.
- 26:13And so we work with them to, um, integrate into a project that they have going on
- 26:17already.
- 26:18Hmm, um,
- 26:20Jack went something really quickly.
- 26:22I think this is a really important piece of the puzzle.
- 26:26Um, I think many, many people want to be involved.
- 26:29They want to do stuff.
- 26:30They have, we have all these ideas.
- 26:31I'm going to do this there.
- 26:32I want to implement and we don't.
- 26:35And I think the reason we don't is because we're so busy.
- 26:37Yeah.
- 26:38That comes puts it to you in a silver platter.
- 26:40Um, they, they serve it up.
- 26:42They make it easy on you.
- 26:44It's right there.
- 26:44And it's, it's easy and it's perfect.
- 26:46And I think that's one of the reasons it's really easy to keep it going because
- 26:50of everything that give back homes does.
- 26:52And the way they, you know, things, the marketing they provide, um, the support
- 26:55they provide is, is very, very strong.
- 26:59Now I see you also have someone else, uh,
- 27:01a planomatic associated with that day.
- 27:04Yes.
- 27:04A planomatic, um, is our, they do our photography for our building.
- 27:07All right.
- 27:08Got it.
- 27:08So photographer.
- 27:09Uh, what I was alluding to was, I think Jessica earlier you had mentioned
- 27:11that there might be other, um, organizations, uh, uh,
- 27:14uh, involved with you on this particular build day.
- 27:16Um, this is just going to be, um, just our compass.
- 27:19Just you guys.
- 27:20We also, on other buildings, we invite our clients.
- 27:23And I have people, then they see it on open on social media and they'll say,
- 27:26Oh, Jessica, call me, um, make sure you let me know when you're next
- 27:29build day as I do that.
- 27:31Just make sure you let me know.
- 27:32So that's another, just another way to connect and be seen again and not
- 27:35just seen as the real, you know, a realtor out there selling homes.
- 27:40Yeah.
- 27:40They're calling me to try and connect and be there for the buildings.
- 27:43Well, you know, it's funny.
- 27:44Often the objection or the resistance out here from real estate agents,
- 27:47when it comes to personal branding, social media content, things like that
- 27:51is I don't know what the post, right?
- 27:53Uh, and I'm just looking at the photos from what would looks to be perhaps
- 27:57one of your recent build days is, I mean, look at, they're sending a photographer
- 28:01for you, right?
- 28:02Uh, bring a young person and grab a phone and video tape.
- 28:05I mean, there's no shortage of content from a build day, right?
- 28:08Exactly.
- 28:10I'm specialty.
- 28:12Yeah, that's all right.
- 28:15So speaking of the Denver build day, we want to make sure for those listening,
- 28:18if you feel compelled to participate, you just want to support, uh, you know,
- 28:21Jessica with what she's doing in her build day locally there in Denver.
- 28:24This link will be in the show notes, uh, to donate to her Denver build day,
- 28:29coming up August 9th.
- 28:30Actually, um, I'll give the URL.
- 28:33It's donate dot give back homes dot com forward slash compass.
- 28:37Uh, once I said once again, that'll be in the show notes.
- 28:39You can just click that and that'll allow you to participate in a way that
- 28:43will make a difference for those local residents.
- 28:45Okay.
- 28:46So what, what, what else is, uh, give back homes doing?
- 28:50What do you guys have planned for, you know, the rest of this year?
- 28:53Um, we're very busy.
- 28:56We have a lot going on.
- 28:57I mean, we, since we last talked as well, we developed a program called key for key
- 29:02with a luxury auction real estate company called concierge auctions.
- 29:06Um, so that program alone has built nearly 200 homes, um, for families in
- 29:11Nicaragua and Central America, and we're actually taking groups of their employees
- 29:16down there to actually help build the home so they can experience their
- 29:20impact, um, first hand.
- 29:21So that's been something we've been so proud of.
- 29:24And it's been keeping us really busy in the best way possible.
- 29:27And it's really, that was kind of the vision from the beginning, you know,
- 29:30like kind of a one for one model.
- 29:32And now they're, they're actually doing it.
- 29:34And we're actually bringing down their employees to experience it as well,
- 29:37which is something that's super important to me.
- 29:40So we're really excited about that.
- 29:41Um, we also recently launched, um, disaster relief fund to help agents
- 29:46who, you know, have been, who basically have lost everything, um, to recent
- 29:50natural disasters.
- 29:51So that started, um, after Hurricane Harvey about two years ago.
- 29:55And we've just kind of been helping families at, you know, agents after terrible
- 29:59things happen.
- 30:00And most recently we helped after the wildfires in California.
- 30:03So we went up to Paradise, um, about a month ago.
- 30:07And that was just so bizarre.
- 30:09Like it was so crazy driving down miles and miles and miles of devastation.
- 30:13Like there's still burnt trees, burnt cars all over the road.
- 30:17Like you, you would have thought the fire happened yesterday.
- 30:20Um, so that was a really eye opening experience for me.
- 30:23And, um, we're going to be fundraising to continue to help families after natural disasters.
- 30:28Um, so we thought that going, um, and then just continuing with all, you know,
- 30:34our local build days, our volunteer events.
- 30:36Um, we're doing a lot of stuff in LA around the rescue mission in downtown.
- 30:40And then we also, we also launched a water initiative.
- 30:43So we started providing, um, communities with access to clean water, um,
- 30:48because what would your home be like without, you know, being able to turn on the
- 30:51water and have safe, clean water there?
- 30:54Um, and that's really cool.
- 30:56We've, we've provided over 400 water filters for families in need, um,
- 31:00in El Salvador, Puerto Rico, and just recently in Colombia.
- 31:04So yeah.
- 31:04So you're busy.
- 31:07Yeah.
- 31:07Stay busy.
- 31:08Um, that's fantastic.
- 31:10What, what is the mission of, uh, give back homes on the spot, but, I mean,
- 31:19I think very simply, you know, we wanted to create a community of, um, you know,
- 31:24real estate professionals who want to give back, um, and then to Jessica's point
- 31:28earlier, we just really want to make it easy to give back.
- 31:30I know it sounds, you know, it might sound silly to sound like, oh,
- 31:33giving it back is so easy.
- 31:34Why do you need help to give back?
- 31:35But it really, it's the easier you make it for people, the, the pain free,
- 31:40you make it for people, the more they're going to do.
- 31:42And so as long as we just keep serving it up, you know, people will,
- 31:45we'll continue to take the opportunities that we're providing.
- 31:48And that's really our mission is just to try and provide more and more people
- 31:52with opportunities and get them engaged either locally or internationally or
- 31:56both. Um, and then it just is a, is a ripple effect after that.
- 32:00You know, once you kind of light that fire and someone wants to bring someone
- 32:03down to Central America and witness poverty, like we have and build a home
- 32:07for family that you've never met before in a country you never even thought
- 32:11about traveling to before.
- 32:12Like people come back, um, really changed, really changed.
- 32:16And that's, that's really beautiful, a really beautiful thing to see how they
- 32:20take it on after that. You know, Jessica is a perfect example of that.
- 32:24Yeah. I mean, what comes to mind for me is the phrase of, uh, you know,
- 32:27like a renewal of spirit in some ways.
- 32:30Cause this, let's face it, this dog on world can get you down sometimes, right?
- 32:33Yeah. And it's like, where, how do you renew that spirit?
- 32:37And, and nothing feels as good as selflessly, right?
- 32:41Helping somebody else, else out and you guys do it in a really neat and impactful way,
- 32:47I think. Um, thank you.
- 32:49I know you guys are busy.
- 32:50So before we wrap up, I want to, if you could give a, for those that are,
- 32:54this is new for them, they haven't heard the give back home story.
- 32:57We don't have Blake here, but could you give kind of the,
- 32:59the short version of his story and how you guys founded this company?
- 33:04Yeah. So Blake, Andrew's and I, um, my business partner and I,
- 33:07we both used to work at Tom's shoes, which is the company that pioneered the one for one
- 33:11giving model. Um, and we traveled throughout Central America,
- 33:14distributing shoes to people in need and, um, obviously at the same time,
- 33:18we saw the living conditions of families there.
- 33:20So that was the same, same kind of experience, right?
- 33:23You go down there, you see, see poverty for the first time like this.
- 33:26And then you come back and you want to do more.
- 33:28So a couple of years later, Blake was actually going through the process of
- 33:32buying a home for his family, um, here in Los Angeles.
- 33:36And so we were, you know, in working with a realtor, um,
- 33:38who's a good friend of ours, Nick Schneider.
- 33:40He, um, started asking us questions about like how, you know,
- 33:44he writes checks left and right.
- 33:45He donates to a billion different charities as an agent,
- 33:48but like never really knew where his money was going or never really saw the
- 33:51impact. And he wanted, you know, advice on how to make
- 33:55giving part of his business and corporate part of his brand.
- 33:58And so that was kind of when we had the idea of creating give back homes,
- 34:02which is taking a similar Tom's model and applying it to the real estate world.
- 34:07Um, and we immediately, we took Nick down to Nicaragua,
- 34:10and we built five homes. Um, and his business took off after that.
- 34:15And we, we were like, wow, we were so pumped on just building five
- 34:18homes like we do more. And we met more and more agents who were just like Nick
- 34:23and who wanted to give back with real meaning and real impact and,
- 34:27and it's just been growing and growing ever since.
- 34:29Yeah, that's fantastic. Okay. So Jessica, you've got your build day coming up.
- 34:34I'm curious, do you do involve, I mean, this is just for you, right?
- 34:37This is a compass build day, right?
- 34:39Yes, that's correct.
- 34:40What happens if, let's say an agent hears that you're doing this and they reach out to you
- 34:44and want to participate?
- 34:45They're in.
- 34:46They're in. Love it.
- 34:51Come on, come on. It's all about the greater good.
- 34:56I will. As a matter of fact, you know what?
- 34:58August 9th, I'm, I'm scheduling stuff for Denver.
- 35:02I got to teach a class there and make coordinate right around the right at the same time.
- 35:05So if that's the case, I'll definitely make time to be there for sure.
- 35:08We can do a live podcast.
- 35:11Yeah.
- 35:12We do a live stream.
- 35:13Boys and hammering going on in the background.
- 35:16That would be ideal. Actually, I would love that.
- 35:18That'd be really cool.
- 35:19All right. So let's, we got to close this out because you guys are busy.
- 35:21I know, listen, for those who want to check out more, I'd encourage you to do it.
- 35:24If you're a loan officer listening to this, by the way, this isn't just for real estate agents only.
- 35:28It is for mortgage professionals as well that, you know,
- 35:31have a kind of a heart centered DNA about themselves and are looking for a place to give back
- 35:35to renew themselves.
- 35:37But also, I mean, really, it's a great opportunity for you to introduce it to your real estate agents.
- 35:42You know, tell them you've listened to share this podcast with them
- 35:46and direct them to the Give Back Homes page or to Jessica's page.
- 35:49And this might be a great introduction and as a way for you to add value to that real estate
- 35:53agent relationship and team up on some of these build events in your local area or go to
- 35:58Nicaragua or wherever and have a life-altering experience, you know.
- 36:01Yes, come with me.
- 36:03That's right.
- 36:03That's right.
- 36:04It will for sure.
- 36:05All right, cool.
- 36:06So one more time, Jessica, for anybody who wants to reach out to you,
- 36:09where would we like to send them?
- 36:11Um, we can send them to email, phone number.
- 36:15Is that what you're asking?
- 36:16Website, you know, yeah.
- 36:20That's for another podcast.
- 36:22That's for another podcast.
- 36:23All right.
- 36:23How about?
- 36:24Comment.
- 36:25Just to add Jessica Northrop dot com.
- 36:27That would be a great place to reach me is by email.
- 36:30Jessica add Jessica Northrop dot com.
- 36:32All right, we'll be able to link there in the show notes.
- 36:34And of course, uh, Caroline what?
- 36:35Give back homes dot com probably the best place, right?
- 36:38Yep.
- 36:38Go to our website give back homes dot com.
- 36:40You can email me directly.
- 36:41Caroline at give back homes dot com with any questions or ideas.
- 36:46Always always open.
- 36:48Yeah.
- 36:48And guys, let me just tell you that that in terms of the ask from give back homes,
- 36:52I mean, the biggest ask is of your time, right?
- 36:55And your willingness to participate and engage versus, you know,
- 36:59you becoming a member of give back homes.
- 37:01You can learn more on their website about the various options for you
- 37:03becoming a member.
- 37:05But I mean, it is an absolute no brainer in terms of, you know,
- 37:08the tools that you heard some of that they assist you with.
- 37:10And that's just the tip of the iceberg.
- 37:11I'm looking at the list of, you know, different tools you'll be equipped with
- 37:15to help you kind of build awareness of your involvement with give back homes
- 37:18with real estate agents, your local community and stuff like that.
- 37:20So as we said before, same as lame, you need to rise above the noise,
- 37:24stand out and make a difference, right?
- 37:27And to go back to that amazing quote,
- 37:31we won't be distracted by comparison if we're captivated by purpose.
- 37:35So what's your purpose?
- 37:36What's your why?
- 37:36Get reconnected, re-associated to that.
- 37:38Maybe give back homes is for you.
- 37:40Jessica and Caroline, I can't thank you enough for being here.
