- 0:00Doing Marriage Well for June 29, 2026. Why Ignoring Family Problems Always Makes Them Bigger.
- 0:06I'm borrowing some brilliant insights this week from my friend,
- 0:09fellow marriage coach, and fellow elder, Sean.
- 0:12On Sunday, Sean preached on 2 Samuel 15, 1-12. He used to talk about dysfunctional
- 0:19familages and marriages.
- 0:20I only yelled amen once, but I was right with him on everything he said.
- 0:25You can watch the sermon if you'd like. There's a link in the show notes.
- 0:28The passage talks about how Absalom starts to build a rebellion against his
- 0:32father David's rule as king.
- 0:34David and Absalom had a dysfunctional relationship of epic proportions,
- 0:38and we can learn what not to do from them.
- 0:41The problem started when Amnon, David's firstborn son, became obsessed with
- 0:46his half-sister, Tamar, eventually raping her.
- 0:49Absalom, thirdborn son and full brother of Tamar, took care of her.
- 0:53But David did nothing, no justice, no consequences.
- 0:57David failed both as a father and a king by ignoring the crime.
- 1:01Two years later, Absalom invited all the king's sons to a sheep-shearing celebration
- 1:06and had Abnon killed when he was drunk.
- 1:09Absalom then fled to his maternal grandfather's kingdom of Geshur,
- 1:12where he stayed for three years.
- 1:14Joab uses deception to get David to agree to let Absalom come home,
- 1:19but David refuses to see his son.
- 1:21Based on the law, both Amnon and Absalom should have been put to death for their
- 1:25actions, but David refused to take any action.
- 1:28Ignoring problems does not make them go away. Neither does it usually lessen
- 1:32them. Usually, ignored problems grow.
- 1:35The hurt becomes stronger over time. Others are pulled in, either because they
- 1:40see injustice or because they care about the person who has been mistreated.
- 1:44Absalom had his brother killed because David ignored Amnon's crime,
- 1:48and in time, Absalom tried to overthrow his father's kingdom because David avoided him.
- 1:53Odds are none of your family relations are as horrific as Absalom's,
- 1:57but probably some wrongs done to you have been ignored or downplayed,
- 2:00and that has led to injuries and resentment, and may have resulted in strained
- 2:04or broken relationships.
- 2:06If you have children, you have on occasion failed to deal with things as you
- 2:09should have, leaving injury and resentment and possibly damage to your relationship.
- 2:14Before I focus on marriage the rest of this week, I want to encourage you to
- 2:18think about your relationships with your family.
- 2:20Are there issues that should be addressed? Is there a relationship that needs to be repaired?
- 2:25Whether you are the victim or the one who failed Please make an effort to fix
- 2:29things Problems with parents or kids hurt everyone involved And they harm our
- 2:33marriages Set aside your pride and make an effort,
- 2:36This is Paul And healthy family relationships make doing marriage well easier.
