- 0:19[SPEAKER_00]: We're in our studio.
- 0:19[SPEAKER_00]: We got some cool backdrops.
- 0:21[SPEAKER_00]: Have fun with it.
- 0:22[SPEAKER_00]: We got a good episode for you guys today.
- 0:24[SPEAKER_00]: This isn't anything we've really ever talked about.
- 0:25[SPEAKER_00]: This is called the broken equipment theory.
- 0:27[SPEAKER_00]: And it's really just stems from the broken window theory.
- 0:31[SPEAKER_00]: I think there was a book called tipping point and in that book, it really talked about it was talking about
- 0:38[SPEAKER_00]: I guess it was Mayor Giuliani, it was Mayor Giuliani from New York City, trying to clean the crime up out of the city and we started looking around, there was this evidence of neglect would would stew in kind of catapult new crime.
- 0:57[SPEAKER_00]: And so the idea was that when you don't fix broken windows, it entices another window to get broken and then graffiti and trash and crime and all that stuff kind of stems from the little esteem of neglect of the broken window.
- 1:16[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it makes sense because I remember as a kid, I mean, let's be honest, everybody went down the train tracks and he saw a broken window and you throw a rock in the thing and it's just like an old dilapidated warehouse or something and it was just like, you know, your kids, but it's human nature.
- 1:30[SPEAKER_00]: Like, all that this must be acceptable.
- 1:34[SPEAKER_00]: And that's the precedence that we set in our jams when we let broken equipment sit for weeks and months on end,
- 1:41[SPEAKER_00]: that it's not necessarily, first off, it's a bad look to your clients, but the other side of it is, is your team.
- 1:49[SPEAKER_00]: Your team starts to see that, hey, you know what this broken things acceptable?
- 1:52[SPEAKER_00]: This trash in the corners isn't going to make a big deal today.
- 1:55[SPEAKER_00]: I'll get that tomorrow and then one thing leads to another,
- 1:58[SPEAKER_00]: And this broken equipment ends up causing all kinds of other issues in your gym where now you look take a look and not not not that crime is going to happen, but like you know the bathrooms in a clean today and well I'll just handle that tomorrow and you set this precedence that is acceptable.
- 2:18[SPEAKER_01]: And so as a gym owner, you need to be very, very cognizant of what you're all allowing to happen in your facilities by just not fixing a piece of equipment so simple as that it is simple, but at the same time, like you nailed it, you're allowing your standards to drop and you do, you just devalue a little bit of everything.
- 2:40[SPEAKER_01]: People don't appreciate the things that aren't broken, you know, I mean, everything just becomes dilapidated over time.
- 2:46[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's just slippery slope and so like every year every summer like we slow down in the summer every year We try to do a fresh coat of paint.
- 2:54[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it's touch up.
- 2:55[SPEAKER_00]: It's the markings on the walls like if we have any like drywall repair We'll try to catch it Every year now obviously if there's a big hole in the wall.
- 3:02[SPEAKER_00]: We're gonna catch it like the next day But Something that we kind of just don't think about as gym owners you just kind of like, oh, what's painted so must be good You have to kind of freshen things up
- 3:15[SPEAKER_00]: And the funny thing is, because you're in there every day, you just stop noticing things.
- 3:20[SPEAKER_00]: And that's why when I come in here and I've been in here for a week, I start picking things apart.
- 3:24[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, there's a whole story that we put out last week, you know, just you're just blind to it.
- 3:32[SPEAKER_00]: I guess as a trainer, as a gym owner that's in your facility every single day, you look around and it's like, oh, it just kind of blind to stuff.
- 3:40[SPEAKER_00]: So,
- 3:41[SPEAKER_00]: The point to the messages this look, you know, one piece of broken equipment that sits there for a extended period of time leads to many, many other things.
- 3:51[SPEAKER_00]: It's not just that one treadmill or that one cable that's sprayed or broken or the, you know, the mats that are have like little chunks of foam taken out over the foam roll is just getting new ones guys because at the end of the day.
- 4:05[SPEAKER_00]: You're setting a precedence.
- 4:07[SPEAKER_00]: You're setting a standard of what your operations will tolerate and what is to be expected And again, one thing leads to another and again, it's not it's a bad look like you said to your clients But it's your your condition your team your staff to like hey, that's kind of like Acceptable and okay
- 4:26[SPEAKER_01]: the way we do it around here.
- 4:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 4:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_00]: So a quick one for you guys today.
- 4:29[SPEAKER_00]: We have frameworks around this stuff.
- 4:31[SPEAKER_00]: This is something we're coming out with and we've got like 60, 70 frameworks now that we're we're kind of teaching to.
- 4:38[SPEAKER_00]: This was a very simple one, but it's so powerful because honestly,
- 4:43[SPEAKER_00]: you don't think about it.
- 4:44[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 4:44[SPEAKER_00]: You don't think about the broken equipment pushing to other things, but you also don't notice the things in your facility when you're in their every single day.
- 4:50[SPEAKER_00]: So I kind of would challenge you, gym owners.
- 4:53[SPEAKER_00]: Number one, if you got broken equipment, get it fixed period into story.
- 4:55[SPEAKER_00]: Like that's that is not acceptable.
- 4:59[SPEAKER_00]: Now we all know like, hey, there's a part on a water or something.
- 5:03[SPEAKER_00]: let your team know that you're put a sign on it.
- 5:05[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, heart set to be delivered Friday, X date fixed by Y date, like just set the precedent.
- 5:11[SPEAKER_00]: So it's not just sitting there now.
- 5:13[SPEAKER_00]: Everybody's been to big box gyms in their life.
- 5:16[SPEAKER_00]: And sometimes I'll go into them and see the same broken equipment for a month.
- 5:21[SPEAKER_01]: A long time, yeah.
- 5:22[SPEAKER_00]: A month.
- 5:23[SPEAKER_00]: And it's not like it's a hard fix.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_00]: It's a snap cable.
- 5:26[SPEAKER_00]: Something like they just got a call in and get somebody out there.
- 5:30[SPEAKER_00]: But you start looking around like the other day I was in there.
- 5:33[SPEAKER_00]: I saw like five out of order science on the equipment and I don't know if it's one thing breaks and so somebody in the membership goes and breaks something else on purpose or not on purpose.
- 5:45[SPEAKER_00]: They just don't treat it right like this is interesting, right?
- 5:48[SPEAKER_00]: So.
- 5:49[SPEAKER_00]: broken equipment also leads to more broken equipment.
- 5:51[SPEAKER_00]: It's really interesting because especially when you get like into the general population, not training gems, but for example, like your public, not public gym, but like big box gems, low membership.
- 6:02[SPEAKER_00]: first off, people don't treat stuff in their very well anyway, but if you, if you let things be broken all the time, guess what, they start breaking stuff almost on purpose or, you know, drop that laser.
- 6:14[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, let me just slam the stack down and let me just drop this dumbbell and crack the side of it out or break the, you know, up the glass and the mirror and stuff.
- 6:22[SPEAKER_00]: Um, it's just, it's silly to think, but you let one thing go that broken window next to you know, the graffiti shows up and there's two more broken windows and there's crime and everything else.
- 6:32[SPEAKER_00]: So guys, listen up, go fix this out.
- 6:34[SPEAKER_00]: And then the other thing I would mention is go through your gym with a fresh set of eyes, even bring like, hey, bring a family member over.
- 6:42[SPEAKER_00]: Hey, why don't you walk through this gym with me and just kind of point out things that just look at a place or don't make sense or a broken or dirty or whatever.
- 6:51[SPEAKER_00]: Um, because I tell you what, you guys get blind to it real quick, and that's why it's silly, but that's why I can go and have a call with a gym owner or you, and we can see something that's so obvious, that's blind to an owner, not a broken piece of equipment, but a broken business system or a broken something's broken, and you guys don't realize it because a fresh set of eyes comes in all of a sudden boom, it's right there.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_01]: So it's so easy to close the problem quite often.
- 7:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 7:19[SPEAKER_00]: Hopefully that helps you guys stay tuned for more frameworks, quick and easy one, but hopefully that catches you guys right at the right time.
- 7:26[SPEAKER_00]: So you guys go in and make those fixes in your gym.
- 7:28[SPEAKER_00]: Hopefully that helps you guys until next time.
- 7:30[SPEAKER_00]: Keep changing the lives we'll see on the next one.
- 7:32[SPEAKER_00]: Bye.
