Transcript
- 0:00What you are listening to is real. The participants are not actors. They are real people with a case pending in Podcast Court.
- 0:10Hello, I'm Producer Peter and welcome to Cage Match, a roundabout way of meeting Nicolas Cage, Podcast Court.
- 0:15This is the tragic case of a man on a mission to capture Osama Bin Laden and another who lost both his hand and his wife.
- 0:24Oh, God.
- 0:25Oh, my God.
- 0:29Oh, my God.
- 0:44Okay, so let's see your wife left town, you jumped off your roof into the pool, you caught COVID. And now you're on our Nicolas Cage podcast. Am I right on this timeline?
- 0:55That's the long and short of it. Yep.
- 0:57Oh, I'm all about the short of it.
- 1:02What are you drinking?
- 1:03Jolly Rogers, Jolly Rogers Pilsner. It's a it's an American beer.
- 1:08Which is important right here in Seattle. Is that correct?
- 1:12Is that where we are?
- 1:13Which is a which is America.
- 1:15Yeah, we finally doxed ourselves. It's living in Seattle.
- 1:19Yeah, when I moved to Portland, don't tell anyone. Yeah.
- 1:22Yeah, right.
- 1:23Also cut that part out about moving to Portland.
- 1:25When I moved to also cut out that last part where I said it when I went to.
- 1:31There you go.
- 1:32Great. Thank you.
- 1:34Yes. That was Eric fucking up the audio. I was ready to blame him.
- 1:38But no, it was his computer.
- 1:40This computer was made in China.
- 1:42If it was made in America, I think it would have.
- 1:46We wouldn't have been we wouldn't have been we wouldn't have been having this issue.
- 1:50Ah, I don't want to tell you how to do your podcast,
- 1:57but if you do your podcast on a computer made in China,
- 2:01you're going to get weird Chinese voices, not good old fashioned
- 2:05American voices like we have here on Cage Match.
- 2:10I have what I watch some some like, you know, real life interviews with with Big G.
- 2:18Oh, with Gary? Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
- 2:21He doesn't have that. He doesn't have that voice.
- 2:24No, not as pronounced.
- 2:26He has a voice.
- 2:28It's less annoying than my voice and it's less pronounced than Cage's voice.
- 2:34I just I just didn't understand why this why the strong voice was in there.
- 2:39I think you nailed it right there. It's a strong voice. Strong American voice.
- 2:44It's the voice of the people.
- 2:46They showed clips of them even after the movie.
- 2:49And it's just like, oh, he doesn't sound like that.
- 2:51Like, no, they immediately.
- 2:53I know it's kind of weird that they did that immediately afterwards,
- 2:56where it's like I got so used to hearing Gary voice.
- 2:58And then it was like, oh, that's what he sounds like.
- 3:00Like a dude. OK.
- 3:03Now, that is what he sounds like after mainstream media has had their way with him.
- 3:08Good point. But if you listen to Gary just talking about Gary things,
- 3:13Gary's probably giving you the full on voice.
- 3:18Is it just hard when I get excited and immediately kind of slip into a little Garyism?
- 3:23Yeah, a little bit.
- 3:25It's hard for me to. Yeah, I love it.
- 3:28You embody Cage's Gary pretty pretty well there.
- 3:32I think Cage's Gary embodies me pretty well.
- 3:36I think Nick's seen by the mainstream media when this movie came out.
- 3:39I refuse to let this movie die because I need it.
- 3:45It validates me.
- 3:47I absolutely ask Peter like how it's made it this far into the.
- 3:53What did it win against in round two to get it around three?
- 3:57It's a great question.
- 3:58Originally adaptation, which is.
- 4:00Beat adaptation the first to go around.
- 4:02But you've come around.
- 4:04I still think it's wrong, but I love it.
- 4:06Or has not come around to that.
- 4:09Most things I love are incorrect, so. Yeah.
- 4:12Oh, it could happen to you.
- 4:14Yeah, it could happen to you.
- 4:15Which I mean, that's that's fine.
- 4:17It's been a deserved win every time.
- 4:19It's been a win every time and it deserved wind once.
- 4:22It's a win in my heart.
- 4:24When's a win? Yep.
- 4:26Just like a whole.
- 4:28You say what is going against Moonstruck tonight?
- 4:30Yeah. Yeah.
- 4:32Yeah. What are your thoughts on Moonstruck?
- 4:34Do you want to dunk on Moonstruck at all?
- 4:36A little shade. Yeah.
- 4:38We won't tell your wife.
- 4:40There's no discussion which movie is more American.
- 4:44We could start right there.
- 4:46And if we're just. Yeah, true.
- 4:47The Italians are not people.
- 4:49We're already starting off.
- 4:51That is established canon on this podcast. Yes.
- 4:54OK, we do have to take that into account.
- 4:57And we will. Later.
- 5:00Nice. And you are.
- 5:02Are you looking at me? I'm Eric.
- 5:03Sorry, I'm remote. Yeah.
- 5:05Eric, you are in our three timers club now.
- 5:09Whoo. Yeah.
- 5:11Big, big fucking dog over here.
- 5:13That's some Gary energy.
- 5:15You got that three timer faster than a lot of our more preferred guests.
- 5:23That's that's nice.
- 5:24Well, I'm often available in a pinch.
- 5:28It's good when you've got covid and your family is out of town
- 5:32because we can just lock you down.
- 5:34It's like, what the fuck else are you going to do?
- 5:36It's perfect.
- 5:37When when for you guys?
- 5:39Ah, well, that's debatable, but we'll get through tonight.
- 5:43So, Eric, you had never seen Army of one yet.
- 5:46You love it, correct?
- 5:48Oh, yeah. Introduced introduced to it.
- 5:52In round one of the podcast here.
- 5:56I mean, a character like this deserves
- 6:00to be explored.
- 6:02He's a guy that that you would be.
- 6:06You'd be so fucking upset if he sat next to you at the bar.
- 6:11He would start talking and he would never stop.
- 6:14And no, some people like that.
- 6:17I know that Nick would enjoy that and he would egg.
- 6:19He would egg that on.
- 6:20He would ask goading questions.
- 6:23And you have a lot of Gary's in your life, I'm guessing.
- 6:27Yeah, probably. I. Does that make me a Will Sasso?
- 6:31Kind of. Or am I a Paul Scheer?
- 6:34It's a sass. Oh shit.
- 6:36You're a sass. Oh, yeah.
- 6:37So am I the sheer or are you sheer?
- 6:41I'm not a Gary. I'm a sheer.
- 6:43Oh, I found myself identifying with Gary.
- 6:46I think that we could all there's a little bit of Gary in all of us.
- 6:50Can I be can I be the mute the mute girl?
- 6:53Yes. She was still OK with everything that was going on, too.
- 6:56I mean, she is very pro Gary camp.
- 7:00Yeah. I mean, he brings her like rocks and shit.
- 7:03Now he brings her nice shit.
- 7:04He brings his girlfriend rocks and shit.
- 7:06Yeah, that's really weird.
- 7:08I think that the trinkets are I mean, they do the job.
- 7:12I mean, they work.
- 7:13He gives him the trinkets and it's like, OK, cool.
- 7:16You were in Pakistan for a month.
- 7:18Like no big deal. Real rocks. Yeah.
- 7:21Like my wife puts up with some shit, I guess.
- 7:24But like Gary, he really takes it to the next level.
- 7:28Like if I just fucking bounced to Pakistan for a month, like, well,
- 7:32neglecting serious medical treatment like.
- 7:35There would be one fight, at least there would be one.
- 7:38We'd have one bad fight.
- 7:40All right.
- 7:44So.
- 7:47I don't know why that got me.
- 7:55Why don't you why don't you give us the long and short of this real quick?
- 8:01Let's get your synopsis on the film.
- 8:04Yeah, just like a quick paragraph ish.
- 8:07I mean, how many times did Gary just say it right himself?
- 8:10I was just like, Gary was pulled by God
- 8:14that he needs to get to Pakistan to to hunt down and killed
- 8:19bring Osama bin Laden to justice because America's just kind of been
- 8:22dicking around and and he thinks that got to bring him back alive
- 8:27for justice and stuff for justice and stuff.
- 8:30At the very least, he said he'd put a pistol in front of him
- 8:34and Gary and they'd pick it up and dry and it'd be fair.
- 8:38So yeah.
- 8:40So it's not just yeah, it's not just like complete complete business.
- 8:43It's like a complete complete vigilante.
- 8:46But I mean, hats off to him.
- 8:48He makes it he makes it to Pakistan, at least he doesn't do much work.
- 8:52He's got ideas on weird ideas on how to get there.
- 8:56I think hang gliding from Israel.
- 8:59That was a voting voting.
- 9:01Every time the hang gliding from Israel thing comes up, like every rotation of this,
- 9:07I have to go back to Google Maps and be like, wait a minute.
- 9:11I'm like, no, I'm going to go to the next country away.
- 9:14Right. And then you look at it and it's like, no, they're fucking like seven
- 9:19countries apart.
- 9:21So fucking good.
- 9:23It's like, hey, I'm going to hang glide from essentially like
- 9:27east, central, northern Africa.
- 9:31That's a place to central northern wild ass almost India.
- 9:36It's like, how about you've done this down for us Americans
- 9:39or long way? Oh, I get it.
- 9:42You Google long way.
- 9:47Like you want it in hot dogs.
- 9:49Yes. A lot of hot dogs like Joey chestnut level.
- 9:54Oh, yeah. I mean, are any of his actual or any of the attempts?
- 10:00I mean, we know that he actually went to Pakistan or any of the hang gliding or
- 10:04any of the attempts actually like real or is that just like ideas that they
- 10:09fictionalized to believe they are in my heart?
- 10:11Yeah, I refuse to burst the bubble in my mind.
- 10:16Gary is the perfect failure.
- 10:18He did all of the things.
- 10:20It would have been great if he actually magoo'd this and like pulled it off.
- 10:23Oh, my God. The Las Vegas scene.
- 10:25I thought he was going to I thought he was going to walk out of their millionaire
- 10:29and really finance the trip.
- 10:31Oh, man. I know we're not talking about like a synopsis.
- 10:34We're just going into it.
- 10:36But I love that Las Vegas scene where he's just like
- 10:41convinced that the Colombians or the cartels are trying to kill him.
- 10:46They're like, we're just from Tijuana.
- 10:48We're here from the Tequila Festival.
- 10:50Oh, that's even better.
- 10:51They're having like this fight, this discussion back and forth.
- 10:55Gary's speaking English.
- 10:56They're speaking Spanish and they're just and they all understand each other.
- 11:00It's terrific.
- 11:02Loved it.
- 11:04With the guy with the fucking slitty shades like runs off and grabs like a close.
- 11:11Yeah, like just starts beating Gary with a room sever.
- 11:15I love how Gary's delusions don't even line up with each other.
- 11:19Like he has a he has a delusion about watching MTV's Cribs, Osama bin Laden edition.
- 11:24And then when he like imagines the fight they had later, he's like, where's your cool house?
- 11:28Yeah. Where's your cool cooler cave with the pictures of the terrorists?
- 11:34I did love this is Osama Osama the third because Osama Junior Junior Junior is stupid.
- 11:44Oh, man. Yeah.
- 11:46OK. My feeling on this movie is really weird in that like it is not a good movie.
- 11:52No, it is really fun and really fucking stupid.
- 11:56And what what kind of blew my mind the other night was that like this is one of the better
- 12:02embodiments of a character that Nick Cage has ever done.
- 12:05He doesn't feel like Nick Cage.
- 12:08You can watch that movie and not know it's him and kind of be like, oh, that was Nick Cage.
- 12:13Shit. Fuck. That's cool.
- 12:15You know, you watch most other things and you're like, oh, there he is.
- 12:18You know, there's his character persona, whatever.
- 12:20But I don't know if it's Gary voice.
- 12:22I don't know if it's the beard and ponytail.
- 12:25I don't know if it's just that he got into some character level that he hadn't hit in a while.
- 12:30But it is a really good performance, which is a weird thing to say.
- 12:35There's a weird physical aspect to it because, yeah, he doesn't really look like Nick Cage in this film.
- 12:41I think the only other movies we could really come to where it's just like, where do we see that level of performance
- 12:45where you kind of lose the cage is this long legs and pig.
- 12:49Pretty much. Yeah. Yeah.
- 12:51I think they're like you hit on it with the physicality. There's also just like something about everything he does that screams middle aged man who didn't stretch this morning.
- 13:02And you mean us? Yeah. Yeah. I feel this.
- 13:06I mean, I stretch every day, but that's brag. Yeah. Humble brag.
- 13:12No, not if you woke up like I wake up. How do you wake up?
- 13:16Yeah. Yeah, it's not a bad beginning, but yeah.
- 13:22It's just half a block.
- 13:22Throwing up glass here is a tough one, as opposed to someone we had to go like,일a, the original.
- 13:23That would be a pain in the even cry.
- 13:25I don't know.
- 13:29Nothing is much worse to come out of it.
- 13:31It's kind of rough.
- 13:32But, yeah, he's got such a.
- 13:34Such an incredible.
- 13:36Package that he brings into this, like just the character, the voice, the physicality.
- 13:43could be argued.
- 13:44No, nobody was asking for this movie, like except for like Gary and his buddies.
- 13:48Like it's probably big in Colorado and pride.
- 13:53Bro, rural Oregon.
- 13:54I think that this movie opened up a world for me.
- 13:58And that world is Nicholas Cage's Gary.
- 14:02But do you think Gary shows this movie to people like he was on a date?
- 14:06Yes, absolutely.
- 14:08A fucking movie was made about you.
- 14:09I don't care if they like got it right.
- 14:11Like and Nicholas Cage Academy Award winner,
- 14:16Nicholas Cage, portraying you.
- 14:20Well, I got was a John yesterday where like
- 14:23he was reading the back of one of the boxes and said, like Academy Award winner.
- 14:27Huh? Like he has it.
- 14:28They don't take him away. Yeah.
- 14:30Yeah, exactly.
- 14:31Would you say it's not like the MTV video?
- 14:34Exactly. They take that shit away.
- 14:37Oh, I'm with Peter.
- 14:40By all accounts, this is a bad movie.
- 14:43Like none of the other characters are developed.
- 14:46The story is just totally random.
- 14:48But I think that the movie
- 14:51plays like a story that Gary is telling you.
- 14:54So it's just as dysfunctional
- 14:59as as what a dialogue from from Gary
- 15:02pretty much is. This guy's fun.
- 15:04He's he's he's a wild card. We love him.
- 15:06I didn't think about that, but there are only like two scenes in this film
- 15:10where there's dialogue that doesn't that Gary isn't in the scene.
- 15:15And that's the FBI agents or CIA agents, whatever they are, the government agents.
- 15:19And yeah, the way they talk is very not naturalistic.
- 15:23And the way they talk about Gary is very like not naturalistic.
- 15:27I love rain rain.
- 15:30I love him wanting to be like like a Dutch expat.
- 15:34Dutch James Bond living in Pakistan or whatever.
- 15:39I love that whole narrative of him
- 15:42continuously trying to go undercover in Pakistan.
- 15:47And then his director just be like, why are you doing this?
- 15:50His his director's favorite Bond was George Lazenbe.
- 15:54Yeah, because they go through every other one.
- 15:56Oh, or Pierce Brosnan.
- 15:57Those are the two that don't get named name dropped.
- 15:59If it was Brosnan, you would at least say it.
- 16:02The way he got into that role, like lied about being an actor
- 16:06and just he was an underwear model.
- 16:07See anywhere I fucking wacky.
- 16:10So you got this podcast gig
- 16:12under a light about being an underwear model.
- 16:15You're like, get on the show.
- 16:18And here I am free balling.
- 16:20Ah, just loose all the time.
- 16:22It's the American way, man.
- 16:25I'm wearing some pretty flowy pants and don't have any underwear on under these.
- 16:28Nice. Congratulations.
- 16:29Yeah, I love the the mental image.
- 16:33All right.
- 16:34So what was your favorite part about this movie, Eric?
- 16:36I mean, the favorite part was was Gary.
- 16:38I mean, the whole movie was Nick Cage and his Gary character.
- 16:41As I said, the rest of the rest of the movie just doesn't.
- 16:45I don't know. They don't really work on it.
- 16:47Except for the extras. Holy smokes.
- 16:49They spent a lot of money on extras.
- 16:52But no, it was that it was the patriotism was my favorite part of the movie.
- 16:57Gary is just my kind of patriot.
- 17:01You know, he goes up over there.
- 17:03He talks up America, but he's not a dick to everyone.
- 17:07He makes a lot of friends.
- 17:08He's very generous to the Pakistani people in the interviews that I listen to.
- 17:12He calls them packies, which I don't think sounds good at all.
- 17:17I don't know if that's what they call themselves, but
- 17:22he is so charismatic.
- 17:25I want to hug him.
- 17:26He reminds me so much of this journeyman I used to work with from.
- 17:30Here we go.
- 17:31Colorado, who I refer to as Boat Trip.
- 17:34But I mean, they look the same.
- 17:36They don't sound the same,
- 17:38but they kind of hold the same opinions on a few things.
- 17:42And they are oversharers.
- 17:44And I love that about both of them.
- 17:46I just the scene where Gary's on the plane going to Pakistan
- 17:49and just talking to that guy next to him, who probably doesn't understand a word.
- 17:52He's saying, but just, oh, my God, to have to be on a fucking international
- 17:57flight next to that.
- 17:58Can you imagine 16 hours with him in a middle seat?
- 18:04I mean, we have hundreds of hours of you in the middle seat of this podcast.
- 18:08So, oh, I'm middle seat.
- 18:11Yeah, middle seat.
- 18:13Big middle seat energy.
- 18:14Yeah, it's got a man spread.
- 18:16Uh huh. That's all that big dick.
- 18:18Big Nick. Uh huh. Uh huh.
- 18:20Big dick.
- 18:22Stop saying dick.
- 18:23You guys started this.
- 18:25You specifically.
- 18:29So this was your first time watching it.
- 18:32What was your but not your last.
- 18:34What was your no never like once you open
- 18:37the army of one can you are full of worms for life?
- 18:43I think I've watched it one one and two thirds times now.
- 18:45Oh, that is so good.
- 18:47I'm glad you came back for a second.
- 18:48Two thirds. So that's the best two thirds.
- 18:51What were there any like surprises in the film
- 18:54that really like took you places for a turn?
- 18:58What was your first like mental turn?
- 19:01Oh, I mean, good Lord.
- 19:03For me, it was just a couple things.
- 19:06Number one was Dr.
- 19:08Loaning Gary, a thousand dollars.
- 19:10That's a dangerous can of worms to open.
- 19:13Crazy people, crazy patients start asking you for cash and you're like, ah.
- 19:17Also, I'd like a reference to that doctor.
- 19:19Gary is awesome.
- 19:21He's looking at his paper.
- 19:22Gary, I can't believe you're alive.
- 19:24This is crazy. Yeah.
- 19:26Well, he did come into that conversation being like, your blood's looking good.
- 19:30You're living hard when nobody thought you would.
- 19:33And then it's like, OK, well, I guess
- 19:36I guess you're a reliable investment.
- 19:38That makes sense.
- 19:39And still on the on the kidneys thing,
- 19:44the fact that he kept on going to fucking Pakistan without
- 19:47ignoring his dialysis was just I don't know.
- 19:51It really made me believe in him.
- 19:53He said the Lord takes care of his soldiers.
- 19:55And I was like, that's the only way you could do it was with some kind
- 19:58of divine intervention.
- 20:00And I think God would only help out in America in that situation.
- 20:05You know. Well, God loves America.
- 20:09I think so. God's a British influencer.
- 20:12Total fucker. Yeah.
- 20:15Do we how many times do I have to say allegedly in this next part?
- 20:20Let's just do a blanket one.
- 20:21Allegedly, Russell Brand's in this movie who is
- 20:26going through some shit. Yeah.
- 20:28I mean, we can't.
- 20:29Britain's own Joe Rogan, the UK's own Joe Rogan. Yeah.
- 20:34I would love to see them fight.
- 20:37Russell Brand verse.
- 20:38Rogan.
- 20:39I would think that Russell Brand would pull out some close up magic.
- 20:43And I know that's not on his thing.
- 20:46That's not his brand.
- 20:47But his Russell Brand.
- 20:49Hey, but he's like the Chris Angel of like my like
- 20:54British comedian actors.
- 20:57Well, it's because I refuse to look at people's faces and remember who they are.
- 21:02So he's British Chris Angel.
- 21:06I could I could. Yeah.
- 21:07Confuse him with a with a mind freak mind to free.
- 21:11That's not all.
- 21:13Allegedly, my mind was allegedly freaked.
- 21:18I did not consent to this mind freaking.
- 21:23I still I know. OK, I know I had to be talked in this movie the first time.
- 21:28And I enjoyed it the first time.
- 21:30It's so much fun.
- 21:31It's so dumb.
- 21:33And it really lucked out being the second episode,
- 21:36because I think we would have gotten through a couple of rounds of this
- 21:39and known what we were doing adaptation would have probably gone through.
- 21:43I would have had a harder time.
- 21:45Making a case.
- 21:46Convincing you guys to abandon all reason.
- 21:50I just have better foresight.
- 21:51Prefer this to.
- 21:54It could happen to you.
- 21:55It could happen to you, too.
- 21:56Like Nick Cage's comedy output isn't there isn't a lot of like
- 22:01really good comedy in his.
- 22:04But his film repertoire. Yeah.
- 22:06Like he's done comedies, but there isn't like any outside of.
- 22:11Oh, you're not dogging on trapped in paradise, are you?
- 22:15I wasn't going to.
- 22:16Bill Furpo.
- 22:19But outside of like raising Arizona, there's not any really like
- 22:23high jinx laden comedies.
- 22:25I think that's less of a fault of Nicholas Cage than Nicholas Cage.
- 22:30I'm not saying Nicholas.
- 22:31Manager. Yeah, I'm not saying Nicholas Cage is at fault.
- 22:33I'm just saying, like in terms of like how we broken this down.
- 22:35I yeah, I do want some more like wild Nicholas Cage romps before he dies.
- 22:42That's imminent.
- 22:45I mean, we're going to get to see him as John Madden here in a couple of years.
- 22:48Yeah, which.
- 22:49That's real.
- 22:50Yeah, let's pull off for a second.
- 22:53Allegedly, this is and I don't have all the details.
- 22:56A film about the video game.
- 23:00Nice.
- 23:01So it's just about the Madden in video game series.
- 23:05Going to play the video game version of John Madden.
- 23:09Yes.
- 23:10Plays the.
- 23:10Is this like a wrecking ball situation?
- 23:12I sure hope so.
- 23:13Oh, my God.
- 23:14Like he's just trapped in a video game and he has to.
- 23:18Oh, and Bo Jackson's out there fucking running down.
- 23:22It's a different game.
- 23:23You can't stop Bo.
- 23:24You can't stop Bo.
- 23:26That's impossible, man.
- 23:27Oh, my God.
- 23:27You just got to like, I mean, Joe Madden could probably jump on the boat
- 23:31train and ride it all the way through the stadium.
- 23:34I just cannot wait for a Nicolas Cage
- 23:39with a Raiders logo on him.
- 23:41You're going to love it.
- 23:41It's going to be my entire life.
- 23:43I'm going to get that tattoo.
- 23:44That's a tattoo.
- 23:45Nicolas Cage as Joe.
- 23:48John.
- 23:50Yeah, I know.
- 23:51Fuck.
- 23:52You keep on saying Joe Madden.
- 23:54You're such a fan.
- 23:55Yeah. Yeah, John Madden.
- 23:57Shut up, Eric.
- 23:59You've got covid.
- 24:01I know. I know.
- 24:02And let's do a quick round robin on a favorite scene from the entire movie.
- 24:07So, Eric, you go first.
- 24:08What was your favorite piece of this movie?
- 24:11Man, it's really hard to get away from the
- 24:15chicken wings at the beginning really sets the tone.
- 24:17But I think it's really when he's at the diner
- 24:21discussing who is going to play him.
- 24:24And it's Nick Cage getting to talk about like, hmm,
- 24:27aren't I like Nick Cage from Conair, huh?
- 24:30And it was just.
- 24:32It was too meta for me, but it was it was so much that I
- 24:36it was so over the top that I that I was OK with it.
- 24:38Good pick.
- 24:39I'm still a fan of, you know, Pygmies made that toilet.
- 24:43Home Depot scene is so good.
- 24:45Pretty good.
- 24:46It's just like one liner after one liner.
- 24:50Take small ships.
- 24:51Let's give credit where credit's due.
- 24:52That's a Lowe's.
- 24:53Everything is blue.
- 24:55OK.
- 24:57Lowe sucks.
- 24:58I know.
- 25:00God, Lowe's is the worst.
- 25:03But yeah, Pygmies shits.
- 25:05I love a home improvement store.
- 25:08I love I love God.
- 25:11I kind of love hang glider scene.
- 25:12Yeah.
- 25:13Not like when he's purchasing it.
- 25:15That's great.
- 25:16But when he's talking to the kids and they're just like,
- 25:19we don't speak English and he's like, move away.
- 25:22And they're like, you're an idiot.
- 25:24And then he takes his janky ass hang glider
- 25:27and just runs off the side and immediately just crashes.
- 25:31It's like you fucking cuts up the hang glider into pieces.
- 25:36And there's so much tape on it when he goes to fly.
- 25:40It's just how dumb is this, Gary?
- 25:45I also love enough.
- 25:46I love this.
- 25:46I love when he thinks that boats that is a parking spot.
- 25:49Yeah. Boat cop scene is maybe my favorite part.
- 25:52I was going to say that as well.
- 25:54It's terrific.
- 25:55It's so good.
- 25:56He comes in with undisclosed broken arm.
- 26:02Do you know how to sail?
- 26:03No, that's how I broke my arm.
- 26:07I just wait on the boat.
- 26:07Record of them.
- 26:08I still hear 10 days later and then just then camera goes over the side
- 26:13and you just hear him just yelling and then he wakes up on a beach in.
- 26:17But he does admit like not that much longer
- 26:20or not that much later in the film that he can't swim, which is
- 26:23which is cool that he thought of sailboat sailboat was his first choice.
- 26:28I'll just eat the muscles.
- 26:29I'll just do the muscles off the bottom.
- 26:31To be fair, many sailors
- 26:36of the olden times.
- 26:37I mean, why bother learning how to swim?
- 26:39They're going to die.
- 26:40Where are you going to go?
- 26:41Yeah. You fall out.
- 26:43Yeah, just fucking die.
- 26:44I did love his reason that like, you know, the people who invented boats
- 26:48lived a long time ago and were smarter than those people.
- 26:52So I'll be fine. Yeah.
- 26:53I'm a 21st century man.
- 26:56Man. Man.
- 26:59What are your favorite chicken wings?
- 27:00Oh, usually classic.
- 27:03I'm dipping them in blue cheese dressing, usually.
- 27:08But but I'll go anywhere.
- 27:10I'll even do a bonus.
- 27:11OK, so you're a big nuggets fan.
- 27:13You're a slut.
- 27:14So, oh, OK, here's a good question.
- 27:17Easily pull pulling off of that.
- 27:21Favorite chicken wing joint in the greater area.
- 27:24This is for our core audience, the Seattleites.
- 27:29Honestly, I've I've really.
- 27:32It's going to be Billard Huang's fish sauce wings.
- 27:36They get me every time.
- 27:37Good wing. It's a really good wing.
- 27:38Good choice. I don't think I've had those wings.
- 27:40Oh, they're good. Yeah.
- 27:41But those wings. Check it out. Yeah.
- 27:43OK, so, Eric, give us give us your like last pitch on this movie.
- 27:48What's your closing argument in the case of Army of War?
- 27:53Why should this go forward?
- 27:55Well, as I was saying before, this is definitely the most American movie
- 28:01out of your two choices by far.
- 28:03And I think that in times like this,
- 28:07we just need to stay together as a country.
- 28:09And I think Gary is the guy that's going to help us do that.
- 28:15Patriotism. Yeah, I think that's the main main reason.
- 28:18I think that we should choose it for America.
- 28:20If you could go back in time, would you elect Gary
- 28:24to Team America, World Police?
- 28:27I would say that Gary is already.
- 28:29I mean, he's a real life.
- 28:31He's like the Phoenix Jones.
- 28:33He's like the real life team America.
- 28:35Yeah, he was so much better than Phoenix Jones because he wasn't selling crack.
- 28:40Traveling Phoenix Jones.
- 28:42Yeah. Phoenix Jones.
- 28:44Allegedly, I'm in for justice.
- 28:48Phoenix Jones kicked my ass.
- 28:49I'm just going to throw allegedly in there.
- 28:51That's because he wore a body suit.
- 28:53I bet they goose him up.
- 28:55Still kick my ass.
- 28:57Especially if he brings the bearish prey.
- 28:59Well, yeah, that's a guaranteed winner.
- 29:02That's how he won the most of those fights.
- 29:05Start fighting him with a ski mask.
- 29:08Wait, that doesn't protect the good stuffs.
- 29:11We got to get out of this one.
- 29:12No, how do I beat Phoenix Jones?
- 29:16I almost said Phoenix, right?
- 29:17All you all you got to do is just not buy crack
- 29:20and he'll go to jail.
- 29:22Yeah. And you'll stay out of jail.
- 29:25All right.
- 29:26Although I think it was speed. Speed.
- 29:29I think he sold club drugs.
- 29:30Yeah, I think you're right.
- 29:31Yeah, I think it was just like probably ecstasy.
- 29:34Yeah. OK.
- 29:35Sorry for accusing you of stealing, allegedly accusing.
- 29:39He didn't want people to get DUI's.
- 29:41So I think he was just trying to help him get home safe.
- 29:44Well, a little speed on your way home.
- 29:47Selling them a drug that keeps them high for six plus hours
- 29:51is not a way to get people home from the club.
- 29:53OK, that's how you stretch your needle.
- 29:56Needle pick me up. That's why you got arrested.
- 29:58That's how you fight inflation and rising cost of living.
- 30:04Do long term drugs.
- 30:06Got to do this long lasting drugs.
- 30:09What do you think of just Nick Cage's overall performance?
- 30:14Oh, it's fucking insane.
- 30:17He is so committed to Gary.
- 30:18I am so curious how much.
- 30:23Do you think he actually spent any time with Gary?
- 30:26No, no, no, I don't think so either.
- 30:29I think that he just kind of like took the story and was like,
- 30:32I'm creating my own Gary character to a point, you know.
- 30:37Character.
- 30:38Do you think we could crowd fund?
- 30:41An unauthorized sequel.
- 30:43Like, what would Gary be taking on now?
- 30:45I pray cameo. We could probably get a Gary cameo.
- 30:50He's taking on Tick Tock.
- 30:52OK, that's less of a feature film.
- 30:57What is Gary taking on?
- 30:58Is he going to fix the Ukrainian problem? Is he
- 31:01is he going back to Israel?
- 31:03Israel seems like a real hot spot right now.
- 31:05It's not like that. And glide into Pakistan.
- 31:09I think he's going to solve the chicken wing crisis.
- 31:11Oh, OK. Yeah.
- 31:13Yeah. Gary's next adventure should be close.
- 31:15Gary's hot wings.
- 31:16Gary's going to solve the chicken wing crisis being that
- 31:20courts have alleged that if you buy boneless wings, you have to expect bones.
- 31:25Yes. Did you not see that case?
- 31:28No. You said no.
- 31:30Yeah. Somebody ate some boneless wings.
- 31:33There was a bone fragment in it and they were in some way
- 31:37personal injury lawyer. Sure.
- 31:40Allegedly injured by such.
- 31:43No, that's American.
- 31:45And courts have decided that if you get boneless wings,
- 31:49you have to just grin and bear that.
- 31:51Assume that there may be a bone.
- 31:52Yeah. Yeah. It's made from a slurry.
- 31:55Yeah. I like a slurry.
- 31:57A slurry can be pushed through a sieve.
- 32:00A bone cannot.
- 32:02I've tried.
- 32:04Good night, everybody.
- 32:07Thank you, Eric.
- 32:08Good. Good night, guys.
- 32:09Thanks for having me.
- 32:11I hope you all stay healthy.
- 32:13Do you want to do you want to plug anything while you're here?
- 32:16Yeah, I'm going to be playing on Fridays and Saturdays at the.
- 32:22Good night, guys.
- 32:25I love it. Thank you, sir.
- 32:27My. Yeah, that's probably for the.
- 32:34Bounce. Let's see.
- 32:38Oh, that was the sound of a can opening.
- 32:42Oh, we're used to that.
- 32:43Yeah, I have.
- 32:44I can I can identify that in a waveform.
- 32:49That's actually a really good skill.
- 32:52It's all right.
- 32:54Look at this waveform and what happened right there at 39 seconds.
- 32:57I believe that was a I think that was a tall, a tall boy rainier.
- 33:02Actually, you can get the exact.
- 33:05Oh, that frequency.
- 33:06Mm hmm. That's a fine vintage.
- 33:09Almost almost out.
- 33:11It's like right on the edge.
- 33:13Maybe was outside for a little bit in a cooler.
- 33:16I don't know.
- 33:17Oh, I would call that a 54 degree
- 33:20PBR with the into the line.
- 33:26Peter, that's the auto audio.
- 33:28And he's like, Oh, I'm sorry.
- 33:29You got you got a short pour in that can.
- 33:32That's yeah.
- 33:33No, that was all air.
- 33:35That one just bubbles.
- 33:37Enjoy all those burps and hiccups later. Sucker.
- 33:42So I don't know if you.
- 33:45Have ever listened to us and it's OK.
- 33:48Never once.
- 33:49No, just going to listen to some episodes in preparation.
- 33:52And also when when Peter told me about starting a podcast
- 33:55that was about Nicholas Cage movies.
- 33:57Oh, OK, perfect.
- 33:58Well, I was just going to say I'm Nick.
- 34:00Hello, Nick.
- 34:01And this is my cohost, Sean.
- 34:04Sean, I'm Sean.
- 34:06It's so gross.
- 34:08It's like never mind.
- 34:09And who are you?
- 34:11The long pause.
- 34:12Who the hell are you?
- 34:13It's one upset.
- 34:15What the fuck?
- 34:16I'm. Oh, we can swear.
- 34:18I didn't. Yeah.
- 34:19Yeah, please.
- 34:20This is an NPR.
- 34:21I forgot. And this mic really had me.
- 34:23NPR loves swears. Yeah.
- 34:26Go on NPR and just say the craziest shit.
- 34:28It'll be fine.
- 34:29You know, they're tiny.
- 34:30Oh, yeah, they had gore like they have to be.
- 34:35You can't hear the fake blood through the through the audio format.
- 34:38I don't know why you would have gore.
- 34:39Yeah, it is actually very disappointing that they don't just put visqueen
- 34:44down over the entire tiny desk.
- 34:46You know, I would have.
- 34:48Yeah.
- 34:49You know, honestly, it's probably the lack of Dave Brocke.
- 34:54If Dave was still around, things a little cleaner.
- 34:56Oh, it was still around.
- 34:58I feel like they wouldn't.
- 34:59Well, they wouldn't have been invited on.
- 35:02But they probably would have just discreetly trashed it.
- 35:08Discreetly trash it.
- 35:09That's classy. That's maturity.
- 35:11You know, that's where you hide all the blood and semen pumps in.
- 35:15Like nipple suits. Smart. Yeah.
- 35:18I've been to libraries.
- 35:20I don't know this.
- 35:20God, I hope you guys know who gore is and what we're talking about.
- 35:25People know I've been to the.
- 35:27OK, all right.
- 35:27Personally, the overlap, the Venn diagram of people who listen to this podcast
- 35:31and know gore is a circle.
- 35:34Fair point.
- 35:36Goire show coming up this year.
- 35:37Hey, nice.
- 35:38Congratulations.
- 35:39Fifth one this year, fifth one, fifth total total.
- 35:42Yeah. Fifth one this year, fifth one comma this year.
- 35:45Oh, man. No, if I was if I was just a gore groupie,
- 35:50you guys would have known about it.
- 35:51Is there a name for gore group?
- 35:53I literally was going to have. Yeah, I was going to.
- 35:56Gore piece.
- 35:57You know.
- 36:01Come along.
- 36:02Yeah. Come along.
- 36:04It's pretty good.
- 36:05Gore goyals.
- 36:07That's too cute. Never mind.
- 36:08I rescind.
- 36:10I rescind the gore goyals.
- 36:12Bo Habs. Bo Habs.
- 36:15We know when we have Eric on later, we talk about ICP
- 36:18and the Juggalo community in Bellingham.
- 36:22Oh, God.
- 36:24In Juggalo community.
- 36:25Yeah, I mean, that ties into Army of One.
- 36:28I mean, gore doesn't tie into Moonstruck, doesn't it?
- 36:31Gore doesn't get anything.
- 36:32We're talking about Moonstruck today, folks.
- 36:35Kick us off.
- 36:36We already did.
- 36:38As you surely guessed.
- 36:40All right, Nick, take it again.
- 36:41What do we what do we do here, Nick?
- 36:43Oh, so on this podcast, we generally like
- 36:47are we here for the Nicolas Cage one tonight?
- 36:49Yes. OK, so tonight we're talking about Nicolas Cage.
- 36:52Yeah, not gore tonight. Yeah. Wow.
- 36:56On this podcast, we take this is not fucking an animal.
- 36:59Oh, on this podcast, we take 64 Nick Cage movies,
- 37:03Final Four Bracket style and
- 37:06face them off against each other, pair them off.
- 37:08There we go. Those are words.
- 37:09That is leading the witness.
- 37:11We'll eventually figure out what the ultimate Nick Cage film is.
- 37:16Yeah. Based on metrics that change constantly.
- 37:19Sometimes it's most cagey.
- 37:21Sometimes it's most rewatchable.
- 37:22Sometimes it's whatever.
- 37:24Army of One. Sometimes whatever.
- 37:25Sometimes it's just whatever.
- 37:27Yeah. Or sometimes you are.
- 37:30For whatever reason, it's always not whatever eight millimeter
- 37:34goes up against, which shocking.
- 37:36Well, eight millimeter keeps going up against lesser films. But
- 37:41to address the point of what pisses me off, those are miscarriages of justice.
- 37:45So and this is a court of law in podcast world.
- 37:50Fuck, I'm a terrible judge.
- 37:51I forgot my gavel.
- 37:52Oh, man. How are you going to judge?
- 37:55Have you reached out to Judge John Hodgman yet?
- 37:56No, not yet.
- 37:57Oh, any anything can be a gavel if you use your imagination.
- 38:01Peter still has the audio from the last gavel, so I'll just say bang.
- 38:05I do have a good gavel clip.
- 38:07So whack. Yeah.
- 38:08Whack, whack. Bang, bang, bang.
- 38:11So we're joined here with a guest.
- 38:14I'm Nick.
- 38:16You're not the guest.
- 38:16Fuck off. Fuck. Hi, Lauren.
- 38:21Where? Oh, it's me.
- 38:23You're the guest.
- 38:24Oh, this is not an audition to take over my role.
- 38:28Unless you like it.
- 38:30Unless I like it.
- 38:32This is not a.
- 38:33Yeah, I prepared a 32 bar excerpt and he is he just follow my lead.
- 38:39OK, somebody prepared today.
- 38:42We're here.
- 38:43I didn't even change shorts.
- 38:48Since I.
- 38:50Should have.
- 38:51We're not here for your questions.
- 38:53We're here for your answers.
- 38:54Yeah.
- 38:55Just not interviewers.
- 38:57My bad, my bad, my bad.
- 38:59Where is your 32 bar excerpt?
- 39:01Huh? You do not want that from any of us.
- 39:05And away and attack.
- 39:07I'm not a 32 bar excerpt.
- 39:09I'm just a single crescendo.
- 39:11Oh, what sound can you give me a little
- 39:14you bring up what that sound is?
- 39:24We've been doing this for two years.
- 39:25How have I never seen that?
- 39:26Oh, about to.
- 39:27What?
- 39:34All right.
- 39:34Otherwise, welcome to.
- 39:35Cain's mess.
- 39:38So I've been in one parade in my life.
- 39:42Go on.
- 39:44So in high school, we have I came from a pretty small town
- 39:49and we had this thing called River Fest.
- 39:52We were right along the Columbia River, and every year
- 39:55they'd have the River Fest princesses and the Kiwanis Club would do things
- 39:59and whatever doesn't matter.
- 40:00There was a parade involved.
- 40:01And so one year I was like, ah, like, you know what?
- 40:05I bet there's no rules against this.
- 40:07I'm not going to read into it.
- 40:08I'm just going to apply.
- 40:09So I applied to be a River Fest princess.
- 40:12And the story went exactly where I wanted it to.
- 40:15There is exactly no rules prohibiting men from being River Fest princesses.
- 40:20As it should be.
- 40:21Air, but you air, but you air, but yeah, I did.
- 40:26I just put it all out there.
- 40:28So was it was it real?
- 40:30Was there a rule about dogs?
- 40:32River princesses?
- 40:34You know, we'll never know because they stopped after this year.
- 40:39The year that I did it.
- 40:41Well, I mean, I went all the way.
- 40:42I did. I kind of participated in the canned food drive
- 40:45and I kind of participated in the public service stuff,
- 40:48but I definitely participated in the parade
- 40:51where I got to sit in a 65 Bel Air and just wave like this.
- 40:56And they gave me a crown to wear.
- 40:58That was decidedly larger than all the women's crowns.
- 41:03And it's like they didn't even want me there,
- 41:05but they had to give me the bigger one because, you know, you're a giant head.
- 41:08Yeah. Massive dome.
- 41:11Yeah, it's my dome.
- 41:12So I got to be in this parade.
- 41:14And as the Riverside princess, the Kiwanis Club stiffed me
- 41:18for my short, a very small scholarship they were supposed to give me,
- 41:23which I can't really fault them for as I barely participated in the process.
- 41:28I I pointed out the problem and the next year a bunch of other dudes applied
- 41:33and they're like, we can't do this and shut it down.
- 41:36They could just come up with a rule to stop that.
- 41:39Nope. They're like, we.
- 41:40Or they could have just said princes and princess.
- 41:43Like you really could just say and really could.
- 41:46I could have just added a conjunction.
- 41:53So obviously, we're here today to talk about Moonstruck.
- 41:57I said that earlier.
- 41:58Obvious.
- 41:59I'm here to talk about non sequiturs.
- 42:02Yeah, it is a super moon tonight.
- 42:04So congratulations, Bella Luna.
- 42:07Bella Luna.
- 42:09That's a hot fucking moon. That's Cosmo's moon.
- 42:12That's Cosmo's moon.
- 42:14Lauren, who are you?
- 42:15Who? I mean, that's a big question.
- 42:18My man.
- 42:19I am a former Riverside princess.
- 42:24And I'm here with the grudge
- 42:28because you have besmirched the good name of our institution.
- 42:31That's what I live for.
- 42:33No, I'm just kidding.
- 42:35Gosh, I I am a friend of Peter's,
- 42:39but also an arts person, a theater person
- 42:43and a big fan of talking bullshit about movies.
- 42:49I think that's maybe the most relevant introduction
- 42:54I could possibly give you.
- 42:55OK, biggest live performance
- 43:00doesn't have to be directly involved with you.
- 43:02Ooh, ooh, la, la.
- 43:04I'm going to come back with my own right afterwards.
- 43:07And it's a doozy.
- 43:08Well, there was an almost mishap,
- 43:11which was that in one of the shows that that I wrote,
- 43:16I had several layers of clothing.
- 43:19One of them was supposed to be safety pin.
- 43:20The other one was not.
- 43:21Somehow someone safety pins both.
- 43:23And I was I was there was basically like a quick change
- 43:25that I was supposed to do.
- 43:27But both things have been pinned together.
- 43:29Move it on visual.
- 43:32Both both items of clothing had been safety pinned together.
- 43:35So for a brief moment, I very nearly had to go out on stage
- 43:41with no shirt on and had no opportunity to come back.
- 43:45There would have been no opportunity to come off stage
- 43:47because the shirts were pinned together.
- 43:49It is the closest I've come to like an actual heart attack
- 43:53or a burlesque performance,
- 43:57depending on how you look at it.
- 44:01And you.
- 44:03That's pretty fantastic.
- 44:04I oh, God.
- 44:06I was never much of an onstage guy.
- 44:10So I did a lot of lighting design and whatnot
- 44:13through college and afterwards.
- 44:14But but I'm up at the lighting console
- 44:18and I'm having an off mic conversation
- 44:21or off headset conversation with my spot op.
- 44:24And it gets into like an escalating kind of dare thing
- 44:28because neither of us were really invested in the show
- 44:31at this point. We'd seen it.
- 44:33And so like I'm now sitting in the booth
- 44:37like without pants on running the console.
- 44:41And then that's just how you get comfortable.
- 44:45I feel like you should put that in like a writer.
- 44:47Yeah. So I accidentally kicked the power supply,
- 44:51kicked the power supply out of the console.
- 44:53And then all the lights in the house and everything went out
- 44:57like mid mid show and like you had to run out.
- 45:02I'm scrambling to like get my shit back on
- 45:06the lights as I'm here.
- 45:08Well, initially pants because I can hear the stairs
- 45:13and I can hear people coming up to see what the fuck happened.
- 45:17And I've got like my stage manager
- 45:22completely oblivious to what I'm dealing with,
- 45:26trying to like address this situation.
- 45:29And then pretty soon, like the head of my department is up there
- 45:33and he's like, I'm like, I mean, luckily it's dark in the booth too, right?
- 45:38And I get my shit back together.
- 45:40Your all pants are on in here. Don't worry, folks.
- 45:42As we're fighting the power supply that got kicked out
- 45:46and getting the show back in.
- 45:48So long story short, ETC really needs to get their shit together
- 45:52and put like.
- 45:54Chastity locks on your pants.
- 45:56No, no, pants.
- 45:58It's theater pants are coming off.
- 46:01They need to secure the power supply in the back of their consoles.
- 46:05The power supply is that what you call it?
- 46:07Yeah. Yeah.
- 46:09You could just come over here and secure this power supply.
- 46:12Perfect. OK.
- 46:14So, Lauren, why don't you tell us about Moonstruck?
- 46:15Yeah. Give us a quick run.
- 46:17Oh, my God. Of the movie Moonstruck.
- 46:19Yeah. Just pull up the Wikipedia page.
- 46:21Just read. So, OK.
- 46:24So Cher is
- 46:29unyassified. She is noified.
- 46:31She is she is made to look less cute than she currently is in 1987.
- 46:37And she she is proposed to by a man old enough to be her father,
- 46:44whose name is Johnny.
- 46:45And he as soon as as soon as he proposes,
- 46:50he leaves the country to go visit his ailing mother.
- 46:55And then Cher has to go tell everyone in her family
- 46:59and everyone in his family, they're going to get married next month,
- 47:02because that's how long it takes.
- 47:03That's proper wedding planning.
- 47:05Yes, exactly.
- 47:08Yeah, I mean,
- 47:10and as she's talking to Johnny's family,
- 47:13she meets Johnny's much, much, much, much younger brother,
- 47:18Nicholas Cage, who I mean, of course, of course,
- 47:22as as any sane person would do, Nicholas Cage of Cher hit it off
- 47:28whilst this grandpa aged fiance is away.
- 47:33And it is a film where every character thinks
- 47:38that they're the main character of an opera.
- 47:40And maybe they are.
- 47:41Maybe that's what this film is.
- 47:45Yeah, I know his name is Johnny and Ronnie.
- 47:47I got it this time.
- 47:49Dick ass.
- 47:51Peter is writing down their names, Johnny and Ronnie for me,
- 47:54because I was getting confused last time.
- 47:59But which one's which, Sean?
- 48:00Ooh, Ronnie said Nicholas Cage.
- 48:03You got it. Yes.
- 48:05Brilliant. Let's see.
- 48:06Wait, is there a cute mnemonic we can give you in some in some
- 48:09like how does how does Ronnie and prosthetic hand?
- 48:13And how do we make that a nice little pun?
- 48:18Ronnie Tremaine.
- 48:20That will be confusing at all.
- 48:22Now, Ronnie Tremaine, I'll remember that famous famous cripple.
- 48:27Oh, wait. No. Oh.
- 48:31Oh, that got that got you, Nick.
- 48:33No, I laugh at your jokes. You know better.
- 48:37No, I think everyone in this movie thinks they're the main character
- 48:39in an opera sums it up really well. Absolutely.
- 48:42And maybe that was what Shana was going for.
- 48:45I think it's still wild that the amount of time between engagement
- 48:50to sleeping with your fiance's brother is less than 24 hours.
- 48:54Yeah. It is the next day. Yeah.
- 48:57He's he's a yeah.
- 48:59He's a wolf. He's got a wolf inside him.
- 49:03Is this where the two wolves things come came from? Yes.
- 49:06There are three wolves, two two wolves inside you.
- 49:09One of them is Nicholas Cage.
- 49:12One of them wants a well done steak and one.
- 49:14Yes. And we'll not get it.
- 49:17OK, so Sean, here's your tattoo.
- 49:20Two of one of them with Nicholas Cage's face.
- 49:23One of them is a straight up wolf.
- 49:25The other one is a wolf with a cage face.
- 49:28That's like an old manuscript.
- 49:31One of them is John Travolta.
- 49:33One of them is Nicholas Cage.
- 49:35Two wolves. One is John Travolta and one is Nicholas Cage.
- 49:38I refuse to get a Travolta tattoo.
- 49:41Everyone's got a Travolta wolf in you.
- 49:44Technically, underneath that face is a cage heart.
- 49:48That's true.
- 49:49I'll just get a face of John Travolta.
- 49:51I'll get a tattoo of John Travolta and just tell everyone it's Nick Cage.
- 49:54Perfect.
- 49:56So, Lauren, had you seen this movie before?
- 49:59Um, no, I hadn't.
- 50:00So so the reason I was excited about it
- 50:03is because so I just graduated from a program,
- 50:06a musical theater writers program called BMI, Lame and Engel
- 50:09musical theater writers, something, something workshop.
- 50:13And so one of my colleagues in so in year two of this program,
- 50:19they the assignment is to adapt a film.
- 50:22And one of my colleagues chose to adapt Moonstruck.
- 50:25And I was like, why does this film seem so perfect to be adapted to a musical?
- 50:30And so it's perfect because it's such high camp.
- 50:34Is there is there a my hands on?
- 50:35My hand, my wife.
- 50:39And I think I think it's because Shanley had opera in mind, like it's so full of
- 50:43like references specifically to Bo M.
- 50:46Like the soundtrack is half Bo M anyway.
- 50:48And like core points in the plot, you know, revolve around going to see
- 50:53like the date that Sharon and Nicholas Cage have to go see Bo M at the Met.
- 51:00Like, I think that what they were going for was like,
- 51:02let's pretend this is an opera, but nobody's saying because like, like
- 51:06the definition of melodrama, right, is melodic drama.
- 51:09Like that's the word like the etymology of that word.
- 51:13Melodramatic is like.
- 51:16If you call somebody melodramatic, you're calling them opera ish,
- 51:19you know, which is like, of course, that's Nicholas Cage.
- 51:22If if any actor is fucking by his own, by his own admission,
- 51:29you know, he's not into the naturalistic.
- 51:32I love your connection here with
- 51:37just being like, oh, you know, it's it's an opera, but nobody's singing.
- 51:41And now he's making movies where it's like, oh, no, it's it's a musical,
- 51:46but we're not going to promote it as a musical.
- 51:49It's like we need seats.
- 51:51Yeah, no, we're going to we're going to do a wicked movie with no music.
- 51:55Yeah, right. Those people are going to be so mad.
- 51:57Yeah, it's like, oh, well, you should have.
- 52:00You should just know if you want it to be a musical,
- 52:02then you should just know it's a musical.
- 52:03But if you don't want it to be a musical, then like, we're not going to tell you.
- 52:07And you'll just have to find out.
- 52:09Willy Wonka, Timothée Chalamet singing for some reason.
- 52:13Oh, me girls, you should have known there was a musical note in the logo.
- 52:20Yeah. Yeah.
- 52:21But also just like a weird even though Mean Girls, the film
- 52:23that wasn't a musical already exists, that's already there.
- 52:28Yeah. That was my next thing.
- 52:29Slapped. It's a good movie. Yeah. Yeah.
- 52:34Yeah. I hear that.
- 52:35I hear the musical movie is not so much.
- 52:37I don't know. I let just let musicals be musicals.
- 52:41Thank you.
- 52:43Good Lord. There's a market for it. It's fine.
- 52:48So we've we've seen this movie now at a bare minimum of three times.
- 52:52So I'm kind of curious to see what Nick and Sean have to say about watching it
- 52:57again and again and again by comparison.
- 52:59Yeah. Kind of fresh.
- 53:01But in a lens of seeing the opera version of it from Lauren.
- 53:07This movie's great. I love it.
- 53:09Yeah. It's just so no scene makes any sense.
- 53:14Like when Johnny is proposing and he's getting heckled
- 53:18by everyone in the restaurant, that's a nice suit.
- 53:20He's ruining his suit.
- 53:23Oh, I wouldn't get on the floor in his suit.
- 53:26Oh, he kneels down and Bobo's like,
- 53:30oh, he's got a wrinkle in his suit or whatever.
- 53:32Oh, man. Incredible.
- 53:35Also, how best Bobo?
- 53:37I think this is the best Bobo.
- 53:39You think so? I have all the Bobos.
- 53:42Retirement Plan Bobo is really good, but that's because Ron Perlman.
- 53:45Yeah. Talking about Iago and.
- 53:47And he's just so like nonplussed about things.
- 53:51And he's I think retirement plan Bobo is better.
- 53:55Bobo.
- 53:57We're a Bobo podcast now.
- 53:59Yeah. It's a pro Bobo.
- 54:01Pro bono. Pro Bobo.
- 54:03And you do it for free. So it is pro bono.
- 54:05Come back for you.
- 54:06Go back for, I guess, retirement plan again.
- 54:08Yeah. The monkey.
- 54:12No, that's a bonobo.
- 54:13Wasn't the monkey on the Simpsons Bobo?
- 54:16But it is it is it is it is it's pro bono, pro Bobo.
- 54:22But it's not on Bono.
- 54:23Is it the pro bono, pro bono, pro Bobo?
- 54:26No, this is all Bobo. No bono.
- 54:29Oh, pro bono. No, no, no.
- 54:32Fuck. I had it.
- 54:34So close. It's rough.
- 54:35It's a rough.
- 54:37That's what she said.
- 54:38Well, God, we're shock jocks now.
- 54:42And Peter's the one who gets noise cancels.
- 54:47He's really trying to get my weekends back.
- 54:49Yeah, I get it.
- 54:52It's Monday.
- 54:53We've been doing this for two and a half years.
- 54:54It's far deep. We're deep in.
- 54:57I got to call my boss.
- 55:00Just know everybody.
- 55:01I call my mom.
- 55:02Because like the next scene, she drops off at the airport
- 55:05and then the old woman puts a curse on the plane.
- 55:07Yeah. Oh, yeah, I like that.
- 55:08And then tells her about it.
- 55:10Yeah, like, oh, yeah, you saw you.
- 55:13You know someone on that plane.
- 55:14I did curse it. So sorry.
- 55:18Final destination for.
- 55:20Yeah, like nobody.
- 55:21Yeah, for it came out like 20 years.
- 55:23But yeah, yeah.
- 55:25You know, I make this joke, but then the star,
- 55:28the star is prequels exist.
- 55:29True enough. Yeah.
- 55:31Yeah. Final destination origins.
- 55:33Every part of this movie is just so unhinged and makes no sense
- 55:36and should be bad.
- 55:37And it's great.
- 55:39I love this film so much.
- 55:40Yeah. This this film is a great ensemble film.
- 55:44It it succeeds in every scene.
- 55:48It like it doesn't have to have Nicolas Cage.
- 55:50It's Cher is terrific.
- 55:53The grandpa is terrific.
- 55:55The dogs are terrific.
- 55:57The uncle and aunt who are just horned up for each other after all these years.
- 56:01I get misty.
- 56:02Like for some reason, I'm like tearing up like I just I just love each other.
- 56:06So that that scene is a terrific couple.
- 56:10They're nice.
- 56:11John Mahoney is great.
- 56:13I love the liquor store owner and his wife are great.
- 56:16The hairdresser even is like she's got a whole life.
- 56:20The one who's like, I've been waiting to cover your grades for three years.
- 56:23Like it was like the scene is this long
- 56:26and you've got a whole back story for this woman.
- 56:28Like, what are we doing?
- 56:30Everyone is good.
- 56:30OK, did we have we figured out what the like the timeline for the entire film
- 56:34is, how many days this takes place over?
- 56:36I mean, I think it's like a week maximum.
- 56:39It's like an episode of 24.
- 56:41Yeah, an episode of 20.
- 56:45I have never chain smoked so many cigarettes than when
- 56:4824 was on the air, and I'm not even like that into like
- 56:53watching TV shows, but I would go home and like
- 56:57it would be Christmas break and I'd go up to my parents' house and I'd
- 57:01pull out the newest Blu Ray or DVD set of 24.
- 57:05Watch the whole season and just like chain smoke the whole time.
- 57:11And then my dad would get he worked swing shifts.
- 57:13He'd come home at like four in the morning and we just sit there and smoke cigarettes.
- 57:18This was a disgusting time when people smoked indoors,
- 57:21aka the early 2000s.
- 57:24That's smoking indoors.
- 57:26No, that's where you were.
- 57:28If it's your own house.
- 57:30Well, they didn't get rid of it until like what, 2005?
- 57:33That's fair. I lived in.
- 57:34I lived in San Francisco.
- 57:36So I was 21 because I was still smoking in bars.
- 57:40So, Lauren, you would you would cast yourself as a fan of this movie, right?
- 57:44I would. I mean, it's it's it's a weird one.
- 57:46You're absolutely right that it shouldn't work.
- 57:48It shouldn't make sense.
- 57:49But I mean, there's there's some moments that sort of take you out of it.
- 57:52I think like there are some moments that are like those cat callers are
- 57:57violently staring at Cher like, you know, like, why?
- 58:01Why is the camera still on those cat callers still as a construction worker?
- 58:06I feel particularly called out.
- 58:08Called out. Yeah.
- 58:10What do you have against cat calling?
- 58:14So much my friends.
- 58:15I do really like when she comes out to the store and accidentally walks
- 58:18like almost bumps into the nuns and then just like, watch it.
- 58:23I was really hoping for more to be made of that moment.
- 58:25Like all it was was like face acting and there was no like verbal
- 58:29confirmation of what that interaction was.
- 58:33I wanted I wanted the nuns to be involved somehow.
- 58:36I guess it was just a reminder of like she's up to cheat on her fiance.
- 58:42Of two days.
- 58:44Oh, what the when she goes to confessional.
- 58:47Oh, yeah. So I was wondering, do you do you think that the priest
- 58:51actor was Cosmo, her dad?
- 58:54He showed a similar and they don't show him because he's a priest.
- 58:58Yeah. And then Nimidi.
- 59:00But I was like, is that fucking Cosmo?
- 59:03Is that what's his name?
- 59:05Gardena? I don't know.
- 59:08His his last name is Gardena, which is a fucking sick ass name.
- 59:12It's pretty good.
- 59:12It's a flower. My friend.
- 59:14Jardinier. Oh, I do like if it had been Jardinier.
- 59:19Now somebody's fluent.
- 59:22Oh, this guy likes pickled vegetables.
- 59:25Yeah, this guy, he's got a small patch of agricultural land.
- 59:30Yeah, I'm pretty sure he's Fancy Gardiner.
- 59:33Yeah. And he's a big meatball.
- 59:35He's a big meatball.
- 59:39No, the thought that I had was that he specifically like
- 59:42he specifically was he called her by name.
- 59:45And I was like, wait, are they not supposed to?
- 59:47I've never been to confessional.
- 59:49So if any of you have it's weird.
- 59:52Help clarify this.
- 59:53But like the point is that you can't see each other, right?
- 59:56Like the point is that the priest doesn't know who you are.
- 59:59You don't know who the priest is.
- 1:00:01You can't see each other in the same way that when you wear specific fishnets,
- 1:00:05you can't see things.
- 1:00:07It's like, you know, it it kind of masks and obscures,
- 1:00:11but you know who the priest is because you go to that church.
- 1:00:15This would be the one person
- 1:00:17standing up in front of everybody and talking anyway.
- 1:00:20Yeah. And if you're a good Catholic,
- 1:00:22your priest is going to know who you are because you actually go to confession.
- 1:00:25And there's a whole rigmarole to get to that point
- 1:00:28where you have to learn a bunch of shit and have your first communion.
- 1:00:31And you go into another room with the priest by yourself.
- 1:00:34Alone with no other adults.
- 1:00:36There's wine involved.
- 1:00:37He offers you a cookie.
- 1:00:40Sounds like something I don't have to address about Catholicism.
- 1:00:45This sounds something.
- 1:00:46It sounds like something I don't remember.
- 1:00:48Don't like me for a lot of reasons.
- 1:00:51I got kicked out of.
- 1:00:52Mom. I got kicked out of Sunday school.
- 1:00:55Kick out. Both of these things.
- 1:00:57Yeah, that's good. We're terrible.
- 1:00:59You're good hosts. Nice work.
- 1:01:01I need some actually to sip on. There you go.
- 1:01:06Anyway, the sentence, the sentence I was finishing was just that like,
- 1:01:09he calls her by name.
- 1:01:10He's like, OK, Loretta, think about the fact that you're cheating on your fiance.
- 1:01:13And I was like, that's is that OK?
- 1:01:16Is that allowed?
- 1:01:18But they're they're divine. They know.
- 1:01:20Yeah. OK, sure. Yeah. Yeah. Direct line.
- 1:01:23All that. Anyway, go on, Peter.
- 1:01:25You were going to say a whole other thing.
- 1:01:27So Catholicism and the Olive Garden.
- 1:01:29When you're here, your family, we just know each other.
- 1:01:33It's it's just what it is.
- 1:01:34And weird things happen out back. Yeah.
- 1:01:36Tongue stuff. And there's an uncle you don't talk about.
- 1:01:41It's not your uncle in the church.
- 1:01:45When you would be
- 1:01:47it can't be your dad in the Catholic Church, but
- 1:01:51come at us Catholics.
- 1:01:52Yeah. Well, I only recognize the Holy Father.
- 1:01:56OK. Let's do a round Robin.
- 1:01:58Here are favorite scenes.
- 1:02:01I mean, my hand, my bride's classic, but I still
- 1:02:05is the end when everyone's just sitting there waiting oatmeal.
- 1:02:09Yeah. The oatmeal scene is definitely my favorite.
- 1:02:14Yeah.
- 1:02:15I OK.
- 1:02:18My favorite scene, including Nicholas Cage, is
- 1:02:23the breakfast table at the end.
- 1:02:24My favorite scene, not including Nicholas Cage,
- 1:02:28is when all the old men are hanging out at that grave
- 1:02:31and the dogs are just walking over people's graves and like peeing on stuff.
- 1:02:34And he reckons Grandpa is just complaining about his shithole son.
- 1:02:38Who won't pay for the wife or pay for his shares wedding.
- 1:02:43It's so good.
- 1:02:44I just love that old man.
- 1:02:46And I love just knowing that the actor is deaf
- 1:02:50and he's just sitting there like waiting for people to stop talking, to say his.
- 1:02:53I say this every time, but my favorite line in the film is during the
- 1:02:57breakfast scene and he just starts crying and Cosmos like, you OK, Pa?
- 1:03:03I'm confused.
- 1:03:04Yes. Oh, I'm sorry.
- 1:03:06Even back it up even further.
- 1:03:08My favorite scene might be when all the dogs come into that house
- 1:03:12and then the one dog misses the stairs.
- 1:03:15And it's on that stair every time I fucking die.
- 1:03:18This is this is a stormtrooper bumping his head on the door.
- 1:03:21Yes. It's such like a peak of reality.
- 1:03:23And that's what I love about this stupid movie.
- 1:03:25It does feel authentic.
- 1:03:27So, Lauren, what's your favorite?
- 1:03:29Oh, my God. That's a that's a tough question.
- 1:03:31I mean, because I feel like, well, OK, so I mean,
- 1:03:34the premise of this podcast, I must I must ask for clarification.
- 1:03:38Are we specifically talking about the quality of Nicholas Cage
- 1:03:44or the quality of film or hard questions?
- 1:03:49That's for us to decide once you're off, Mike.
- 1:03:52Yeah. Once we've sent you home.
- 1:03:56I don't know. It's a combination of things.
- 1:03:58Best performance. Is it the most cagey performance?
- 1:04:01Is it the most cagey performance? Is it him embodying a character best?
- 1:04:05Is it more fun? I don't fucking know.
- 1:04:08Neither do we. It keeps it interesting every week. Yeah.
- 1:04:13This is a lot of fucking hard rules.
- 1:04:16Yeah. Like regular court, we're horrible. Horrible.
- 1:04:19Optable. Yeah. Well, because because the gavel is gone.
- 1:04:23How could there be justice with no gavel?
- 1:04:25You don't know. We we've got gavels.
- 1:04:27Whack, whack, whack, whack, whack. Yeah. Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang.
- 1:04:31You're right. I heard them.
- 1:04:35I mean, I do. OK, I do.
- 1:04:37I mean, gosh, I sure did love.
- 1:04:40And this is purely personal.
- 1:04:42This is purely like I love the scene of the two of them going to the Met Opera
- 1:04:48and and share being like, I don't know about the opera.
- 1:04:50Have you ever been to the opera?
- 1:04:51But I've been at the opera and then going and being like a wreck
- 1:04:56and just like being all open and feelings because like.
- 1:04:59I mean, as as a musical theater nerd, as somebody who is
- 1:05:03who is partnered to an opera conductor who is in rehearsal currently for an opera
- 1:05:09in a virtual opera festival, that's where he is right now.
- 1:05:13Like, it is so lovely to remind people
- 1:05:17that the point of art is not to be like over your head.
- 1:05:21It's it's not to be like we're going to look down on you
- 1:05:23if you don't do the etiquette properly, if you clap at the wrong time, whatever.
- 1:05:27The point of art is to go feel feelings really big, especially, especially opera.
- 1:05:32The point of opera is to make you feel really gigantic, outsized feelings.
- 1:05:36And that is that's all anyone is asking.
- 1:05:39That is all these these these legendary composers want from you
- 1:05:42is just to make you feel stuff really big.
- 1:05:46Yeah, it's not for the head, it's for the heart.
- 1:05:48I do love how she gets tripped up on the fact that like she dies
- 1:05:51because she has tuberculosis and she's hung up on like,
- 1:05:53but she kept singing with tuberculosis.
- 1:05:55She's coughing her brains off, but she had to keep singing.
- 1:05:59It's like she couldn't quite tell like the difference between the actor
- 1:06:02or the singer and the story.
- 1:06:04Like the line was a little blurred for her, which feels applicable
- 1:06:08to the rest of the movie.
- 1:06:10The rest of the movie isn't sure if real life needs to be naturalistic
- 1:06:14and real or if real life needs to be a little a little extra big,
- 1:06:18a little melodramatic.
- 1:06:19But yeah, I just love that the moment where like like the hand holding
- 1:06:23where she like holds his wooden hand and like she's got tears
- 1:06:26rolling down her cheeks.
- 1:06:27Oh, it's just like that particular piece, too.
- 1:06:31It's just so beautiful.
- 1:06:32Like, oh, I love it.
- 1:06:33It just gives me feelings.
- 1:06:36So I still don't know if I've seen it share in any other
- 1:06:40acting performance like have you not seen Splash?
- 1:06:44Oh, OK, I've seen Splash.
- 1:06:46She's not in Splash.
- 1:06:47Mermaids, you're thinking Mermaids.
- 1:06:48Mermaids, yeah.
- 1:06:49Mermaids, which has no Mermaids in it.
- 1:06:51Mermaids, Nerea Mermaids, Splash is Darryl Hannah.
- 1:06:56This podcast is on hiatus until Mermaids has more Splash in it.
- 1:07:00Did you did you watch Witches of Eastwick?
- 1:07:03Witches of Eastwick.
- 1:07:04What was that one with Jack Nicholson is the devil that share and fuck.
- 1:07:09It's a couple other amazing actresses.
- 1:07:11They summon the devil because they want to fuck.
- 1:07:14And then he shows up as like a big.
- 1:07:16Oh, which is the beast.
- 1:07:18This is incredible.
- 1:07:19It's it's pretty good.
- 1:07:20I only ever remember the end of that movie, which is so unhinged.
- 1:07:24Yeah, the whole thing is.
- 1:07:27So, yeah, it's Cher, Susan Sarandon, Michelle Pfeiffer.
- 1:07:29I was a main like witches of Eastwick who summoned Jack Nicholson
- 1:07:33to be their weird fuck devil daddy.
- 1:07:36Fucked up, daddy.
- 1:07:37Who among us can say they haven't done that?
- 1:07:41I mean, if I had a nickel.
- 1:07:42Yeah, right.
- 1:07:44Because this is Nick Cage podcast.
- 1:07:45How would you rate Nick Cage's performance on this?
- 1:07:47Oh, I mean, I I feel like I'm probably less of a Nicholas Cage scholar
- 1:07:53than than most of the the obviously the host of this podcast
- 1:07:57or the most of the other guests on this podcast.
- 1:08:02But he certainly he rises to the camp level
- 1:08:06that is required of a movie that thinks it's an opera without music.
- 1:08:11I think this is the most appropriate place for that level of melodrama.
- 1:08:15The most like the most applicable lane for that kind of acting to be in.
- 1:08:21For that ridiculous, like there's a moment when he like scratches his face
- 1:08:24with the wooden hand, just like it's not even like there's not even like a lampshade
- 1:08:28hung on it, you know, they're just like at breakfast that the morning after.
- 1:08:31And he's like with his wooden hand, just scratches his face casually.
- 1:08:34And he's like, I bet I bet the director didn't have to say that to him.
- 1:08:38I bet he came up with that.
- 1:08:39I bet he was like, yeah, this is a normal thing.
- 1:08:41I love how much this movie rises to Nicholas Cage's camp level.
- 1:08:48Like, I feel like everybody just brought themselves to his level
- 1:08:55because he was on this.
- 1:08:56It's such a great performance overall.
- 1:08:58I love the over the top.
- 1:08:59Hammy is like, bring me the big knife.
- 1:09:01Chrissy. Yeah.
- 1:09:02But then you'll have got Nick Cage.
- 1:09:04But when you put Nick Cage.
- 1:09:05He's like, yeah, I cut my throat.
- 1:09:07When he gives her the speech about how like loves messy and like nothing's
- 1:09:10perfect, snow's perfect.
- 1:09:12And he gives us really impassioned, beautiful performance.
- 1:09:16And just the next line just falls so flat.
- 1:09:19And it's just kind of like, oh, yeah, still in the cage movie.
- 1:09:21Yeah.
- 1:09:22But he is charming.
- 1:09:24It's young Nick Cage.
- 1:09:25He's got his fucked up teeth.
- 1:09:27His original hair.
- 1:09:29I think that it's the opposite.
- 1:09:31It's not that the movie, the rest of the movie rises to Nicholas Cage's level.
- 1:09:34It's that he like he's new.
- 1:09:36I mean, he's a copula.
- 1:09:37So he like is in the film or whatever.
- 1:09:39He's doing a few things at this point.
- 1:09:41He's not as established as Cher.
- 1:09:43Like if we're producers sitting around the table, like who should we cast for this?
- 1:09:49Like, I don't think that Nicholas Cage is like an A at the time would have been like
- 1:09:53an A list.
- 1:09:54It wasn't Nick Cage.
- 1:09:56It wasn't Nick Cage.
- 1:09:57Cher refused to do the movie if they didn't hire Nick Cage because of Peggy Sue got married
- 1:10:02because she wanted a crazy guy to play a crazy guy.
- 1:10:05And like it's not it's not like the movie knows he's crazy.
- 1:10:09Like somehow the movie doesn't know he's crazy because like, okay, here's here's my my weird
- 1:10:13little theoretic thing.
- 1:10:16Like I think early in the movie, I think the beginning of the movie, it's like this is
- 1:10:20a regular naturalistic acting delivery of lines as usual film.
- 1:10:24We see Cher in like just like the shabbiest outfit you can you can possibly imagine.
- 1:10:30And then like it's like the conflict happens between normal life and like what if you live
- 1:10:37like an opera?
- 1:10:38And I feel like what the movie is saying is like, just fucking live high camp.
- 1:10:43Just like live your life like a fucking opera.
- 1:10:46And like like everyone's life gets massive and and super like romantic only after she
- 1:10:54starts to accept that things can be big and dramatic and can be.
- 1:10:58So it's like the thesis of the movie is like the conflict between normal life and and high
- 1:11:07camp.
- 1:11:08I'm like, can't wins because she wants to go to the opera and has the tears running down
- 1:11:12her face.
- 1:11:13It's like, so, OK, yeah, I do want to choose the guy with no hands.
- 1:11:17I do want to fucking choose the crazy man who's getting a knife to cut his throat two minutes
- 1:11:21into beating me.
- 1:11:22Her life with Johnny would have been so like boring and just a straight play.
- 1:11:29But yeah, but her life with Nicolas Cage has so many like just unidentifiable opportunities.
- 1:11:37Opportunities, opportunities.
- 1:11:39Yeah, yeah, you can have that.
- 1:11:43Thank you.
- 1:11:44Thank you.
- 1:11:45Being into camera was really nice for that.
- 1:11:48For this audio format.
- 1:11:51It's one of our strongest suits.
- 1:11:54Yeah.
- 1:11:55Lean into camera.
- 1:11:56Right.
- 1:11:57Gross.
- 1:11:58I hate you guys.
- 1:12:01Was that Axel F?
- 1:12:04It wasn't.
- 1:12:05I mean, you control our microphones.
- 1:12:08This is on you.
- 1:12:09Yeah.
- 1:12:10You have the power to stop this.
- 1:12:11I do.
- 1:12:12I do have that power.
- 1:12:13It's good.
- 1:12:14Go watch it.
- 1:12:15Yeah.
- 1:12:16Thank you, Lauren.
- 1:12:17It's a banger.
- 1:12:18Thank you.
- 1:12:19Yeah, really.
- 1:12:20It's good.
- 1:12:21No shit.
- 1:12:22It made the slick scene.
- 1:12:24Yeah, it's true.
- 1:12:25So did it.
- 1:12:26Yeah, Lauren, your face seems to indicate that you did not know that we called it the slicks
- 1:12:31teen for the sweet 16 instead because we're gross.
- 1:12:35I mean, it tracks tracks nothing next team being a Nicholas Cage.
- 1:12:42That's really good.
- 1:12:44Not affiliated would be easy.
- 1:12:46Yeah, too simple.
- 1:12:47Hard to transition from the next team to the master eight.
- 1:12:52Yeah.
- 1:12:53And then the final four.
- 1:12:54Yeah.
- 1:12:55Yeah.
- 1:12:56Yeah.
- 1:12:57We're okay.
- 1:12:58And then what?
- 1:12:59And then what?
- 1:13:00Go on.
- 1:13:01Big.
- 1:13:02So now that we really laid out.
- 1:13:03Oh, it's a face off.
- 1:13:04Once you get, yeah, once you get one against the other, it is face off.
- 1:13:07Now that we've really laid that out there, do you want to promote yourself at all?
- 1:13:14I'd like to formally associate my brand with the slicks team and the final four skin.
- 1:13:20My Instagram handle is Freeman dot band Freeman with one E unlike Morgan.
- 1:13:28For E.M.A.N. dot B.A.N.D.
- 1:13:33I swear I talk pretty one day.
- 1:13:37Yeah, me too.
- 1:13:39Me words good.
- 1:13:41Yeah, but now.
- 1:13:44Perfect.
- 1:13:45Fantastic.
- 1:13:46So let's wrap this thing up.
- 1:13:52OK, well, so Moonstruck versus Army of One.
- 1:13:57And we have pretty compelling arguments from both, I feel.
- 1:14:01I mean, both movies.
- 1:14:03Arguably have some of the most like extreme Nick Cage in his career in terms of performances.
- 1:14:10At very wildly different times in his career, just starting out and kind of in that realm of is he done?
- 1:14:17Yeah, the slump reinventing.
- 1:14:19Yeah.
- 1:14:20That's a nice way of saying the slump.
- 1:14:22I've been there.
- 1:14:24I'm reinventing as well.
- 1:14:26So am I.
- 1:14:27Mine involves more dresses.
- 1:14:32So, OK, Moonstruck, we have good arguments of just strong ensemble cast and strong thematic purposes or usage.
- 1:14:43Yeah. Thanks, Lauren.
- 1:14:45Great.
- 1:14:46I mean, fucking cover to cover every scene.
- 1:14:50Great. Every performance.
- 1:14:51Great. Like that movie.
- 1:14:52Hope like goes through so well and goes at such a clip because there's never a moment that's wasted.
- 1:14:59Yeah.
- 1:15:00But on the flip side, also an ensemble.
- 1:15:04Nicholas Cage is maybe a third of the film.
- 1:15:09He's the second lead.
- 1:15:11He's the second lead, which means there's another lead and there's other characters like he's not dominating the film.
- 1:15:20No, at all.
- 1:15:21It's a share film.
- 1:15:23Steals the show, though.
- 1:15:25I don't know.
- 1:15:26I think I think Cher still still owns the movie.
- 1:15:30Nicholas Cage, strong performance, memorable performance.
- 1:15:34I love it.
- 1:15:35It's a lot of fun.
- 1:15:37Like I mentioned earlier, I'm talking to Lauren like I forgot, like just there are so many great scenes of him just really acting his heart out and such great line delivery and just there's so much passion in that performance.
- 1:15:49Yeah, no, he didn't.
- 1:15:51He didn't leave anything on the table.
- 1:15:53He he committed really hard to this film.
- 1:15:55It was a lot of fun.
- 1:15:56It is a lot of fun to watch.
- 1:15:58It has not stopped being a good film.
- 1:16:02Man.
- 1:16:04And then man, there is army of one.
- 1:16:07It's a roller coaster that is only ups and screaming downs.
- 1:16:12And they're not even bad downs.
- 1:16:14It's just like so much fun throughout.
- 1:16:18There's a couple moments where the build feels a little long.
- 1:16:22Couple scenes where it it doesn't seem like we're just having fun.
- 1:16:28There's some extended there's some stuff and when he's in Pakistan and some of the extended just kind of like meandering that there's like there's little jokes there, but it's not really doing much for the film.
- 1:16:37Yeah, it's it's just jokes at that moment, which to a degree serve the purpose of showing a passage of time.
- 1:16:46But even the passage of time is not that much like that first time when he's in Pakistan and you get like eight, ten events and then it's like after that it's like day two.
- 1:16:59Yeah, that was day one.
- 1:17:01Okay, I I do still die when I see that day to screen.
- 1:17:06I'm just like, oh my God, he fucking shot his wad so early.
- 1:17:11And then the rest of the time he's just walking around an alleyway swinging a sword, which is so much fun.
- 1:17:18But narratively, it does.
- 1:17:21It's got a slump in that part of the film.
- 1:17:25I think where that movie really does shine the best is watching his interactions and his relationships with his friends and girlfriend.
- 1:17:33And yeah, you need to get him away from that to show the depths of how crazy that person is.
- 1:17:39But it's not served great at times.
- 1:17:42And the shit with him and Russell Brand is just so bad.
- 1:17:46I guess we have like a weird antithesis of like our dichotomy of we have a well developed world with Moonstruck where everybody like has a life.
- 1:17:59Yeah.
- 1:18:00Every character has something beyond the screen and a very well developed character, which makes sense because he's a real person.
- 1:18:10And the way he interacts with people is just very genuine.
- 1:18:15I would like to also.
- 1:18:16So one thing we talk about with Army of One is how much of a character and how much of a character performances is where you don't see Nick Cage in it.
- 1:18:24But at the same time, Moonstruck still so early in his career, so all those things we come to know Nick Cage as are still developing.
- 1:18:32So it's not like he's writing the character, the personage of Nick Cage for that performance either.
- 1:18:38No, no, he's not like riding it on coattails for sure.
- 1:18:42And a lot of the things that really end up defining his career and his style are very much in development and kind of being I wouldn't say workshopped, but they're on display here in a way that there's a rawness to both performances.
- 1:19:02I think I might say that he's got Gary more polished, but he's also a much older actor at that point.
- 1:19:09Yes. Yeah, it's like 30 some odd years later.
- 1:19:12So no terrific, terrific, terrific pairing.
- 1:19:17Very difficult. Not something.
- 1:19:19It's not a one to one. No, I struggle with this and I have a lot of biases, but you just like to see yourself on the big screen.
- 1:19:27Yeah. No, I mean, I was pretty confident going into this that I'm just like, of course, I'm going to pick Moonstruck, but especially talking about Army of One with Eric and how much fun it is just to discuss.
- 1:19:38There's so much to be said for that. I could recommend Moonstruck to almost anyone.
- 1:19:43I could recommend Army of One to a much smaller group of people because I know while I think it's fun and while most of my friends, I think, will enjoy it for what it is, I know so many people who would just be completely turned off by that film at so many levels.
- 1:19:58Yeah, there there is a level that you have to overcome for Army of One. I mean, I would recommend either movie to anybody circumstantially.
- 1:20:12Army of One, I have to be able to recommend it to somebody who's going to watch it.
- 1:20:17Well, OK, you can watch Army of One in passing and love it. You can watch Army of One a second time and love it. You can watch Army of One a fourth time and love it.
- 1:20:31You can watch Moonstruck four times and love it. But if you're not paying attention, you need to pay attention that first time for sure.
- 1:20:39And at least a little bit, it's got lacy amounts of like script and story and three through line, but it's it's not an any time film.
- 1:20:50And I'm not I'm not saying that to talk myself out of it. This is a legitimately tough one for me.
- 1:20:56It's OK, it's more limited in the recommendation. I think that's a fair assessment you're going to raise agreed
- 1:21:03It's a smarter recommendation.
- 1:21:05Agreed.
- 1:21:06As far as like film critique goes, it's arguably got more going for it.
- 1:21:12A tighter script, more concise editing.
- 1:21:16It's got a lot of first draft energy on a lot of them with a lot of the writing, I feel.
- 1:21:21Oh, yeah.
- 1:21:22Moonstruck?
- 1:21:23Oh, Army of One, sorry.
- 1:21:24Were you talking about Moonstruck?
- 1:21:26Yeah, I was talking about Moonstruck.
- 1:21:28Oh, okay, I got lost in the conversation.
- 1:21:30No, I agree with both those things.
- 1:21:32As much as I love Army of One, I think I might have to go Moonstruck.
- 1:21:35I think there's just more there and a wider range of emotion and just so much that he
- 1:21:41just sells in that role.
- 1:21:43It's not just, while it's a great joke, it's not just one joke for 90 minutes.
- 1:21:48I won't get tired of Johnny.
- 1:21:51Ronnie, thanks, Peter.
- 1:21:53Fantastic.
- 1:21:54I had to refer to Peter's notes.
- 1:21:56Sorry for calling you a dick fuck.
- 1:21:58There's a certain point where I'm going to get tired of listening to Gary.
- 1:22:02Also, I know I know Gary's and oh my God, like there's there's an aspect of that character
- 1:22:07that reminds me of people I know and I just it's funny.
- 1:22:10It's charming, but it's also mildly upsetting as someone who lives with obnoxiously.
- 1:22:15You live alone.
- 1:22:17Baring.
- 1:22:19Self-dunk.
- 1:22:21As someone who lives with a lot of overbearing and like big emotions and emotional swings,
- 1:22:28I can relate to a Ronnie a lot more.
- 1:22:30And I don't know.
- 1:22:32I love seeing that on the big screen.
- 1:22:33Yeah, it's a fantastic character and the role is well cast and Nicholas Cage.
- 1:22:42My struggle is it comes down all the way back to episode two.
- 1:22:48Which one is like my Nicholas Cage performance recommendation?
- 1:22:57One of them is a Nicholas Cage movie.
- 1:22:59One of them is a great movie with Nicholas Cage.
- 1:23:04I have to fight every fiber in my being, but I'm going to recommend you watch Army of One
- 1:23:13and proceed with Moonstruck in the bracket.
- 1:23:18No, I think that's right.
- 1:23:19I would recommend I mean, I recommend people watch Army of One.
- 1:23:21I think Moonstruck is the better choice.
- 1:23:24You're never going to be upset watching Army of One.
- 1:23:27If you want to watch Army of One, watch Army of One.
- 1:23:30Yes. If you don't want to watch Army of One, don't watch Army of One.
- 1:23:33You should still do it.
- 1:23:34But yeah, I mean, do it.
- 1:23:36I like getting into. Yeah.
- 1:23:37Yeah. But Moonstruck is a it's a terrific film.
- 1:23:41It's well put together. It's got feelings.
- 1:23:44It's got you hate feelings.
- 1:23:46Yeah. But I mean, other people don't.
- 1:23:49So I have to I have to bend for people.
- 1:23:52It's a well put together, ultimately enjoyable film that includes share dominantly.
- 1:23:58Yep. But Nicholas Cage where it counts. Yeah.
- 1:24:01And his hand is wooden because he lost it in a slicer.
- 1:24:05He lost his hand. He lost his bride.
- 1:24:08Johnny has his hand.
- 1:24:09Johnny has my bride, his bride.
- 1:24:12Do you want to do that one again?
- 1:24:14He has Johnny's bride. He does.

- 1:26:16That's our bread and butter.
- 1:26:22My palest shade is white. OK.
- 1:26:25But we're all pale shades of white here.
- 1:26:28How many of us have owned a sword at one point in our life?
- 1:26:32I never have.
- 1:26:34I kind of always was jealous of people who had them, but I never had one.
- 1:26:38So that makes you the coolest person in this room.
- 1:26:40That actually makes you the whitest person of just like, I wish I owned a sword.
- 1:26:44I couldn't get one. OK, so I lusted for swords.
- 1:26:48No, I'm going to I'm going to be I'm going to fucking show how much of a fucking nerd I was.
- 1:26:52So you own a katana.
- 1:26:54I've owned a couple of swords. Yes. OK.
- 1:26:56I've owned one sword and it wasn't even a real sword.
- 1:27:00It was like a replica for a video game.
- 1:27:03Guess what it was.
- 1:27:05OK, wait, I also owned a replica sword, but from a book series.
- 1:27:09OK. I am stumped on both of these.
- 1:27:13Guess the nerdiest sword you can.
- 1:27:16A buster sword. Close.
- 1:27:19I mean, that was one number up.
- 1:27:23One Final Fantasy eight. Yeah, the gun blade.
- 1:27:27Oh, well, gun blade. Yeah.
- 1:27:28Did it have a little charm on it? Yeah.
- 1:27:30Wow. All right.
- 1:27:31And add a working trigger to.
- 1:27:33Yeah, sick. Did it shoot? No.
- 1:27:36But the gun blade didn't shoot either.
- 1:27:38Was it explosive shell? Yeah. All right.
- 1:27:41What did you have?
- 1:27:43So from the Wheel of Time series, I had a replica of Randolph
- 1:27:49Thor's hair and Mark Blade. Nerds.
- 1:27:53Yeah, that's how nerdy that's dorky as shit.
- 1:27:56Yeah, but also fucking fantastic fantasy series.
- 1:27:59What? What? OK, if you could have owned a nerdy sword, what would you want?
- 1:28:03Oh, man, I probably got into swords when I read like Red Wall.
- 1:28:07So it would have been like a mouse sword.
- 1:28:10So like a drink like all of pick.
- 1:28:15Pretty much. Yeah, cool. Yeah.
- 1:28:17Boy, if I could have owned a better sword.
- 1:28:21And what I had, what would be the coolest sword?
- 1:28:25I mean, given my love of the Highlander series, I would have wanted like the fucking.
- 1:28:30That's a good pick.
- 1:28:31Oh, yeah, the Highlander sword, the blade sword.
- 1:28:34Oh, I would have loved the blade sword.
- 1:28:37Also fulfilling Katana at the same time.
- 1:28:41Oh, you know what? I would love to have a replica of Gary's sword from Army of One.
- 1:28:49Perfect. Yeah.
- 1:28:51I would put it right next to my replica of the beast.
