- 0:01What's your true nature? Your essence?
- 0:03What makes you tick? This journey to find out is what
- 0:07I refer to as your second clock. It's a chance to discover,
- 0:11experience, challenge and reconnect with what you value
- 0:15most. Through clarity, love,
- 0:17acceptance and reflection, you'll find your awareness.
- 0:21And what happens when you do well, you'll find you.
- 0:25Join me, click follow, like and subscribe and let's see where
- 0:29this leads. Lately I've been thinking about
- 0:34people's essence and their true nature and how everybody is so
- 0:39individual and what matters most to somebody may not matter at
- 0:43all to another person. So when reflecting on this, I
- 0:47started by thinking back to who I used to be when I was younger
- 0:51and comparing it to where I am now, who I've become and what
- 0:58parts I need to think about revisiting.
- 1:01My tagline is reclaiming me, but the truth is, there's a lot of
- 1:05me that I don't even know, so I can't actually reclaim it.
- 1:10The me that I used to be, I think I lost along the way.
- 1:14I think I got too good at changing.
- 1:18Changing for other people. I never got great at it, but
- 1:22just good enough that I now have to rediscover what makes me
- 1:28tick, what I like, like, what I truly like versus what I was
- 1:33told to like. I know I'm not alone in this.
- 1:36A lot of people find themselves at this place and when they do,
- 1:41they're asking the same question I'm asking.
- 1:44How do I find out what it is that I actually like?
- 1:48How do I find me in it all? I have to discover it.
- 1:55But how do you discover your true nature?
- 1:58Is it something you find, or is it something that you just know
- 2:03when you know? Well, let's take what I do every
- 2:08week here. I sit in front of a mic and I
- 2:11talk. I riff on any thought that runs
- 2:14through my head. Now that thought can run through
- 2:17my head in the middle of a Pilates class while I'm talking
- 2:21to somebody else or when I'm listening to a book.
- 2:26Something pops into my mind, I start to play with it, and the
- 2:32next thing you know, I'm off. Just like I am here right now,
- 2:37just saying whatever comes to mind and weaving it to the next
- 2:42thought and the next. That's who I am.
- 2:45That's who I've always been since I was little.
- 2:48I would hear something and clock it.
- 2:51I would see something and I'd visually note it, and then
- 2:55eventually I'd create patterns, connect dots, and from that I'd
- 3:02have a concept. And that concept would form in
- 3:06the form of the story. So what I'm doing here now is my
- 3:11true nature. It's who I am.
- 3:14It's who I've always been. Somebody that tells stories with
- 3:18the message in a bottle. The idea that it's more than
- 3:22just talking. It's more than just saying what
- 3:26comes to mind. There's a deeper purpose if
- 3:30you're looking for it. And again, that's my true
- 3:34nature. I look for deeper purposes.
- 3:37I look for the reason why. Why does this matter?
- 3:40What's the point? Why do we show up like we do?
- 3:45What makes us different and what connects us all?
- 3:50So when I think about my essence and somebody else's, that's what
- 3:53I had to remember. Everybody's is so different, but
- 3:58not everybody knows their true essence.
- 4:00I know for me, I didn't. I had no idea.
- 4:04But every now and again, I would stumble upon something that just
- 4:08felt right, like different, right?
- 4:12Not just, oh, that'll work. And that's when I realized I
- 4:16need to go towards that. It's like magnetic.
- 4:20When you find something that just feels right or you find a
- 4:22person that just understands you, like really understands
- 4:27you, it makes all those other relationships seem kind of not
- 4:32so strong, not so worth investing in.
- 4:36I didn't know that before. When I was younger, I just did
- 4:39my best to get along with everybody and sometimes it was
- 4:43at the detriment of me. But again, I didn't know that.
- 4:47It wasn't until I went through different schools, different
- 4:50camps, different situations, different jobs.
- 4:55It's when I realized that not everybody is meant to stay.
- 4:59You're supposed to meet a lot of people, take a lot of different
- 5:03situations in, relate to different people and not get
- 5:07along with different people to find your people.
- 5:12This is very top of mind for me right now.
- 5:15My daughter, she's a social butterfly.
- 5:19She's fun, carefree, lighthearted.
- 5:22She's got one of those smiles that just is bright and radiates
- 5:27so much. So when somebody steals her
- 5:29smile, I take notice. And like everything, I draw a
- 5:35pattern and eventually I come to a conclusion which has action on
- 5:41the end of it. Because what I found is it's not
- 5:44good enough to just come to a conclusion, see something, you
- 5:48need to do something too. That's the benefit you get from
- 5:53being an adult. You get to change things, you
- 5:57get to change the course of things, you get to take action.
- 6:01Whereas when you're a child, you kind of just have to get through
- 6:06to get by. I guess.
- 6:09When I see my daughter smile, I see her true essence.
- 6:14Now I've seen children that are opposite.
- 6:17There's something about them that's MC Cobb heavy and weighed
- 6:21down. And my instinct is to dig
- 6:25deeper, understand what makes them tick.
- 6:30But I don't even think they know what makes them tick.
- 6:34But that's just it. It's all very childlike.
- 6:39They have no idea what makes their smile sparkly, makes it
- 6:43true. They have no idea why one friend
- 6:47is more exciting than another. They just go with it.
- 6:52But at some point they start to try.
- 6:56They start to conform, and little by little, their essence,
- 7:02their glow. And there's gonna say qua it
- 7:05goes to and the road back to it. Well, some people never find it
- 7:12and others find themselves where I'm at trying to reconnect with
- 7:16that essence. So what do you do when you
- 7:21recognize your true nature, but you feel a little bit cornered?
- 7:27Cornered in the sense that you can't change your environment
- 7:30right away. You can't let go of all the
- 7:33relationships that you've amassed that are not suiting you
- 7:36anymore. Well, you bring in awareness.
- 7:41You become aware that things may not fit.
- 7:46I think for so long I was just making do, making do with
- 7:50whatever I had in front of me. But I know different now.
- 7:56I know the difference between fitting in and belonging.
- 7:59For so long, I couldn't tell the 2 apart.
- 8:04I was convinced that I belonged wherever I was because I could
- 8:08make the best of whatever I had. But after I got let go for my
- 8:12job, I had to really sit with it.
- 8:16Sit with how I felt. I never felt settled in that
- 8:20job. I never felt like they truly
- 8:23accepted me or embraced all of me.
- 8:27They wanted bits and pieces of me.
- 8:30It's like they wanted to cherry pick aspects but that's not how
- 8:36it works. So I started listening to
- 8:40different books and reflecting and I happened upon Brene
- 8:44Brown's Braving the Wilderness where she talks about the
- 8:47difference between belonging and fitting in and I started to
- 8:51understand. I guess the best and simplest
- 8:55way for me to explain it is imagine you're asked to make
- 8:58fire, but you're given 2 sticks that are wet.
- 9:04No matter what you do, no matter how hard you rub those two
- 9:07sticks together, there's just friction, no spark.
- 9:13So now when I look back on my past job, they never truly
- 9:17welcomed me. It was never a fit.
- 9:22I may have loved the work and most of the people there were
- 9:25great and so creative, but that wasn't enough.
- 9:30It was their culture and what was being asked of me.
- 9:34Their value system wasn't aligned with mine, and little by
- 9:38little it was breaking me. No matter how hard I tried to
- 9:43fit in, another part of me I had to let go of to do so.
- 9:48I had to have less regard for this or that if I wanted to
- 9:52quote UN quote belong. But I wasn't, and they weren't
- 9:57going to let me. I guess they weren't going to
- 10:01let me betray myself. That's what happens when you're
- 10:06trying to fit in. The larger group sees it as a
- 10:10misalignment and they don't let you in.
- 10:15They don't let you feel settled. And it's that not feeling
- 10:19settled, which is when you know you're not with your people.
- 10:24Your true nature is not received well.
- 10:28But I had never had an experience where it was so
- 10:30apparent to everybody else but me.
- 10:34I was fighting against the current.
- 10:37I didn't want to accept defeat. I didn't want to accept that for
- 10:40once, my people pleaser ways were failing me.
- 10:45But I couldn't please everybody. I couldn't bend to this person
- 10:49or that person's will. I could never be less than.
- 10:53Even when I tried, my old ways would just creep up.
- 10:58I couldn't conform. I couldn't dim.
- 11:01At a certain point, I had to accept that this was me.
- 11:05As a child, I had been asked so many times to change, tell
- 11:10lesson, and here I was again being asked to do the same.
- 11:15And I finally had to admit that it wasn't going to be possible
- 11:19anymore. And unlike school children, we
- 11:24don't have to fight the uphill battle thinking we're belonging,
- 11:28only later to realize that we were just doing our best to fit
- 11:31in, working with what we had and who we had to work with.
- 11:37But for adults, we don't need that.
- 11:41We need to regard ourselves. Recognize when things make sense
- 11:46and when things seem tiring. Recognize when things come easy
- 11:51and when things are strained. That's the big sign.
- 11:57Any situation where you have to explain yourself or you feel
- 12:00misunderstood, judged, you feel like you're not valued or enough
- 12:07is all you need. You just need to feel into it.
- 12:12Silence the lip service and take notice when somebody says
- 12:17something but their actions don't back it up.
- 12:22Or maybe you notice yourself in the moment, how you feel
- 12:28comfortable, at peace, uneasy, anxious even.
- 12:35For my daughter, I've started to see the signs of her conforming.
- 12:41Usually she's got a bright, sparkly smile and she drifts
- 12:46from one social activity to another, beaming.
- 12:50But little by little, I've seen something else.
- 12:54I've seen her biting her nails, and those moments come when
- 12:58she's in a social activity that she doesn't want to be in, a
- 13:02conflict that she doesn't want to be a part of.
- 13:06But somehow here she is in the mix and instead of getting out,
- 13:13she turns inward and finds a solution.
- 13:17One where she doesn't need to speak, she doesn't need to tell
- 13:20people that she's uncomfortable, and somehow by biting her nails,
- 13:25it helps her to stay so she can fit in and get through.
- 13:31As I've been talking, I started realizing something, the
- 13:36pattern. I see it now.
- 13:39I see how we dip into fitting in and I see how we know when we
- 13:45belong. When you can get lost in an
- 13:48experience and just enjoy to the fullest extent, not worrying
- 13:53about how do you look, what are people going to think feeling
- 13:59judged? Instead, you feel comfortable.
- 14:05You feel like you can be yourself.
- 14:08And then comes the smile and it radiates comfort and acceptance,
- 14:17sparkling. That's it.
- 14:19That's where your true essence is.
- 14:25Thanks for listening. These episodes are unscripted.
