- 0:21Speaker 1: Hey, tolerators, This is to all the men I've tolerated before.
- 0:24Speaker 1: With Natley Katona, your weekly look at everyday misogyny. This week,
- 0:29Speaker 1: I am joined by new friend of the pod, Margaret,
- 0:32Speaker 1: host of Smash Hit, a podcast that covers a lot
- 0:36Speaker 1: of episodes of the show Smashed, but has started to
- 0:38Speaker 1: dive into other pop culture smash hits. Hopefully, by now
- 0:42Speaker 1: you have listened to my episode where we covered Sirens
- 0:45Speaker 1: and I rewrote the ending. I just took that upon
- 0:48Speaker 1: myself to be like, it would have been better if
- 0:50Speaker 1: this had happened. After telling Margaret I loved the show,
- 0:53Speaker 1: would have watched fifty five seasons of the show, but
- 0:57Speaker 1: I would have also rewrote, rewritten. But we're not here
- 1:01Speaker 1: to talk about Sirens. We're here to talk about nineties
- 1:05Speaker 1: the finest basically have disappeared off the face of the earth,
- 1:10Speaker 1: the Ulsin Twins, and how misogyny colored their movies, their career,
- 1:15Speaker 1: and everything that happened afterwards. Welcome to the show, Margaret.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Thank you for having me. Natalie, this is so fun
- 1:23Speaker 2: and I'm so excited to dive into Mary, Kate and Ashley.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Yes, because this was your idea, Because while I was
- 1:30Speaker 1: a girl in the nineties, So of course I've watched
- 1:32Speaker 1: all the Mary Kate and Ashley movies, and honestly, looking
- 1:36Speaker 1: at that secret Google drive that if you DM me,
- 1:39Speaker 1: I will tell you how to get of all the movies,
- 1:42Speaker 1: I was like, oh no, I really did watch more
- 1:46Speaker 1: than It takes two and two of a kind, like
- 1:49Speaker 1: those are my cultural pinpoints of the Ulsen Twins.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Oh no, I watched all, I think every single one
- 1:56Speaker 2: of them until I felt like I had mature out
- 2:00Speaker 2: of Mary Kate and Nashley movie. So I never saw
- 2:03Speaker 2: New York Minute, which was I think supposed to be
- 2:05Speaker 2: their big foray in the feature films that got completely
- 2:08Speaker 2: panned by the critics. So at the time I was like,
- 2:11Speaker 2: I am above this. I'm not going to watch this.
- 2:13Speaker 2: But I love an Olsen twin cameo in Weeds, which
- 2:18Speaker 2: is one of my favorite shows of all times.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Oh I forgot about that cameo.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Of all time. Forgive me for not speaking English correctly,
- 2:26Speaker 2: but let me. I always mix up who it was.
- 2:29Speaker 2: I want to say, if I'm going to get s,
- 2:30Speaker 2: who do you think it was? Let's figure out who
- 2:32Speaker 2: he was. I think it was Mary Kate. I think
- 2:35Speaker 2: so too. So it was it was Mary Kate who
- 2:37Speaker 2: did an arc as one of Silas's girlfriends, and she
- 2:40Speaker 2: was fantastic.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Oh my god, I have to rewatch Weeds because it's
- 2:44Speaker 1: actually a comp I have written down for the pilot
- 2:48Speaker 1: that I am currently getting notes on and pretending to
- 2:50Speaker 1: not hate myself over. So I need to watch Weeds
- 2:54Speaker 1: because it would give me a lot of inspiration about
- 2:58Speaker 1: how to do crime. But funny, because Weeds was playing until.
- 3:01Speaker 2: It wasn't hysterical. It completely jumps the shark. But it
- 3:05Speaker 2: is a comfort watch for me, Like my husband knows
- 3:08Speaker 2: that I've got like a rotation of maybe four shows
- 3:11Speaker 2: and at some point I'm just doing a comfort watch
- 3:14Speaker 2: and Weeds is probably every eighteen months to two years,
- 3:18Speaker 2: I'm doing a Weeds binge.
- 3:19Speaker 1: All right, Okay, I'm gonna do it. But talk about
- 3:23Speaker 1: misogyny within someone's career. When you said in a New
- 3:27Speaker 1: York Minute, I immediately flashed towards that was the first
- 3:31Speaker 1: time that they used the bit with those girls that
- 3:33Speaker 1: one of them accidentally gets naked and like covered with
- 3:36Speaker 1: a towel or something, And.
- 3:40Speaker 2: I think this. I think also they were eighteen when
- 3:45Speaker 2: they filmed it, and also when it went up on
- 3:49Speaker 2: the theater screen, so you had all that sort of
- 3:51Speaker 2: like ickiness too that everyone was just excited to see,
- 3:55Speaker 2: Like what was it like when they're on the big
- 3:57Speaker 2: screen as opposed to like.
- 3:59Speaker 1: Straight to me, yes and what? And their eighteenth birthday
- 4:05Speaker 1: was also a horrific countdown online for perverts. Yeah, which
- 4:12Speaker 1: I think my blood just boils over because Okay, I'm
- 4:18Speaker 1: trying to think I'm so out of touch when it
- 4:21Speaker 1: comes to like teen television. Also, it doesn't really count
- 4:25Speaker 1: for teen television because they're all twenty seven years old
- 4:28Speaker 1: playing teens we like.
- 4:30Speaker 2: And maybe this is why, and maybe this is why,
- 4:33Speaker 2: Like I know that nWo one, oh, like this hasn't
- 4:36Speaker 2: been done before nine o two and oh they were
- 4:37Speaker 2: all like thirty and playing eighteen year olds. But I
- 4:40Speaker 2: do definitely feel like there's they do they like. The
- 4:46Speaker 2: biggest one I'm thinking of is Maggottie Grace when she'd
- 4:48Speaker 2: taken And I understand probably you wanted someone mature who
- 4:51Speaker 2: could understand the subject matter, but I think she was
- 4:54Speaker 2: between twenty five and twenty seven when she did that,
- 4:56Speaker 2: and she was playing an eighteen year old girl.
- 4:58Speaker 1: All of the actor on Ginny and Georgia have like
- 5:02Speaker 1: three years shy, like they're all surrounding twenty five by
- 5:07Speaker 1: two or three years, if not five, like, and it's
- 5:12Speaker 1: like but also I'm like, now that we've had things
- 5:16Speaker 1: like the Nickelodeon documentary YEP, which it's terrible that I
- 5:22Speaker 1: don't remember the name of that horrific documentary Quiet on
- 5:27Speaker 1: Set that I watched twice because I watched it in
- 5:30Speaker 1: my own home, went to my sister's house and she said, well,
- 5:33Speaker 1: I haven't finished it, and I was like, oh.
- 5:36Speaker 2: I couldn't even watch it. I listened to podcasts about it,
- 5:39Speaker 2: but I couldn't bring myself to actually watch it.
- 5:41Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like now I don't know where I fall
- 5:44Speaker 1: on whether or not children should have jobs on sets,
- 5:53Speaker 1: like should And then I'm like, well, do we just
- 5:55Speaker 1: stop telling stories where a seven year old is present?
- 5:58Speaker 1: I don't know what to do.
- 6:00Speaker 2: That is true, and the Psychical Pop podcast did a
- 6:03Speaker 2: really good recap of I think it was on ID
- 6:06Speaker 2: channel where it's like the Demons of Hollywood. So there
- 6:08Speaker 2: was Stephen Collins, but then there were a few episodes
- 6:10Speaker 2: that were specifically about child stars and one is a Lawyer,
- 6:14Speaker 2: One is a psychologist, and they discussed the dynamic of
- 6:18Speaker 2: when the child actor is the breadwinner for the family,
- 6:22Speaker 2: that that's when things immediately go south. And I think
- 6:26Speaker 2: that's why we see the Olsen twins as the complete
- 6:29Speaker 2: polar opposite of that, and why I think they've been
- 6:31Speaker 2: able to be free from all of this and are
- 6:36Speaker 2: in obscurity doing probably fabulous things that we'll never know
- 6:40Speaker 2: about because their parents were professionals who also knew how
- 6:45Speaker 2: to get lawyers, knew how to get agents, knew how
- 6:48Speaker 2: to advocate for their two kids, so that way they
- 6:50Speaker 2: were put in vulnerable positions.
- 6:53Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like how Britney Spearers had a completely different
- 6:56Speaker 1: fame experience than Taylor Swift, both very colored by misogyny
- 7:01Speaker 1: and grossness and capitalism. But at least Taylor's family was
- 7:06Speaker 1: privileged enough and at a financial point enough where they
- 7:10Speaker 1: could maintain a lot of the power of her career
- 7:15Speaker 1: while also not leeching off.
- 7:18Speaker 2: Of her right and also obviously complete tinfoil hat. But
- 7:23Speaker 2: I also wonder just because Mary Kata and Ashley predate
- 7:26Speaker 2: Taylor like by a smidge, and I do remember interviews
- 7:31Speaker 2: with Olton twins when they were young, like five or
- 7:34Speaker 2: six years old talking about their parents and the limits
- 7:36Speaker 2: that their parents have. That for parents in the nineties
- 7:40Speaker 2: considering having their children in the entertainment business, were Taylor's
- 7:44Speaker 2: parents looking to Mary Kata Nashley's parents thinking, Okay, they
- 7:47Speaker 2: did this right. How can we set this up?
- 7:50Speaker 1: I mean, I hope so. And as someone who is
- 7:54Speaker 1: very excited for the Apple TV version of I'm Glad
- 7:57Speaker 1: My Mom Died starring Jennifer Aniston and as Jeanette mccurty's
- 8:01Speaker 1: mom in case everyone isn't on top of that, I
- 8:06Speaker 1: hope that at some point that we start seeing more
- 8:11Speaker 1: stories of parents who tried their best to do it
- 8:14Speaker 1: right instead of sensationalizing the Mama June's and the Dina lowhand,
- 8:21Speaker 1: the Leina lowhands, the Dina lowhands, and you know, Billy
- 8:28Speaker 1: Ray Cyrus is gross and right obviously, Yeah, you know,
- 8:34Speaker 1: and so yeah, I wonder if they like I mean,
- 8:39Speaker 1: there are people that you can study up on. The
- 8:41Speaker 1: problem is is that it's so quiet when it's done
- 8:45Speaker 1: in a non abusive way.
- 8:47Speaker 2: Yeah, that is true, And I am with you. I
- 8:51Speaker 2: would love a documentary about the Olsen twins. And I
- 8:55Speaker 2: don't even know what their parents look like. I would
- 8:57Speaker 2: love to be able to have them sit down and
- 8:59Speaker 2: talk about this is how we did it, this is
- 9:02Speaker 2: why we did it, because I think that would be
- 9:04Speaker 2: particularly now with influencers monetizing their children on TikTok and
- 9:11Speaker 2: Instagram and YouTube. I really think there needs to be
- 9:14Speaker 2: a cultural shift back to what the Olsen.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Parents did correct. And I think it's so wild that, like, okay,
- 9:23Speaker 1: with I Carly and the entire cast of I Carly,
- 9:26Speaker 1: I'm like, those are Nickelodeon kids, And then with like Lizzie,
- 9:29Speaker 1: Hillary Duff and all of the Lizzie McGuire kids, I'm like,
- 9:32Speaker 1: those are Disney kids. But when I sit down to
- 9:35Speaker 1: think about the Olsen Twins, I'm like, I don't know
- 9:37Speaker 1: what studio was producing those movies.
- 9:42Speaker 2: It was I believe it was. It was Dual Star,
- 9:44Speaker 2: and it was a parent company that I believe the
- 9:47Speaker 2: parents set up for them.
- 9:49Speaker 1: So there we go.
- 9:50Speaker 2: So they had complete creative control over everything at all times.
- 9:54Speaker 1: Well, thank god, because I do like when I think
- 9:57Speaker 1: of the music video for Brother for Sale, it looks
- 10:01Speaker 1: it looks like something I could have filmed on my
- 10:03Speaker 1: camcorder in the nineties.
- 10:05Speaker 2: It was probably filmed in their backyard.
- 10:10Speaker 1: And to think that it all started as them being
- 10:14Speaker 1: infants who were being swapped out for Michelle Tanner on
- 10:18Speaker 1: the most wholesome TV show in the world, Full House.
- 10:22Speaker 1: And you know, I think I think one of the
- 10:27Speaker 1: better things that the Olsen twins did as they got
- 10:30Speaker 1: older is when they were tired of it, they kind
- 10:33Speaker 1: of went into hiding. And it's very hard to get
- 10:37Speaker 1: to see an Olsen twin in the wild at this point.
- 10:40Speaker 2: Yeah, it's very hard.
- 10:42Speaker 1: Sometimes I'm worried that it's actually like a recluse situation
- 10:48Speaker 1: where they just feel like they can't be outside and
- 10:51Speaker 1: I'm like, oh no, Like, these girls see the sun,
- 10:54Speaker 1: but they have their clothing brand. I truly I think
- 10:58Speaker 1: I have no pinpoint on what they're doing currently. Like
- 11:01Speaker 1: I was looking at up tiktoks and stuff and I
- 11:04Speaker 1: didn't realize that Mary Kate had an actual public drug
- 11:08Speaker 1: problem that center to rehab.
- 11:12Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, And I think Ashley has a baby.
- 11:16Speaker 1: Now, Yes, a secret baby, which I love that.
- 11:20Speaker 2: Anytime anyone has a secret baby, I am like, hallelujah,
- 11:24Speaker 2: that is spectacular.
- 11:25Speaker 1: Good for you, right, you just show up one day
- 11:27Speaker 1: at a Chili's with the baby and someone says, this is.
- 11:31Speaker 2: My baby, Yeah, this is my baby. Going back. Duel
- 11:35Speaker 2: Star Is Privately was a privately held American company owned
- 11:39Speaker 2: by Mary Kate and Ashley Oh.
- 11:41Speaker 1: My god entrepreneurs.
- 11:44Speaker 2: Do you remember their Walmart like hair hair accessory line?
- 11:48Speaker 1: Of course I do, yes, yes, yeah, okay, yes.
- 11:51Speaker 2: We are like completely in sync with like all these
- 11:54Speaker 2: like touchstone moments of childhood that ultimately lead back to
- 11:58Speaker 2: Mary Kaya Ashley.
- 11:59Speaker 1: I tried so hard to have their highlights and the
- 12:02Speaker 1: bowl shape of their hair, like.
- 12:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I had wavy hair, so anytime I tried to
- 12:09Speaker 2: replicate anything that they did with their hair, it never
- 12:11Speaker 2: worked out. And I also was so jealous of the
- 12:16Speaker 2: way they could wear too tops, yes, just because they
- 12:19Speaker 2: had the bodies for tubtops. I never had the body
- 12:22Speaker 2: for a tubetop, and they just were always prance and
- 12:25Speaker 2: around to their tubtops and I was so jealous.
- 12:27Speaker 1: Yes, oh my god. The other day at the movie
- 12:32Speaker 1: I saw a woman she was younger than me, a teen,
- 12:37Speaker 1: a twenty, I won't know, and she was wearing a
- 12:41Speaker 1: Tommy Hill figure tubetop and sweatpant combo, and I was like,
- 12:45Speaker 1: is that that yond?
- 12:47Speaker 2: That's so great.
- 12:48Speaker 1: I was like, can I go to a Tommy Hill
- 12:50Speaker 1: figure right now? It get a bit dazzled tubed up
- 12:54Speaker 1: with the American flag. Oh so was it the dazzled Yeah,
- 12:58Speaker 1: it had like a sequino American flag on it. Gotcha.
- 13:01Speaker 2: I was envisioning like a Chris White plane plane plane
- 13:05Speaker 2: tube top and then like plane plane plane race wetpants,
- 13:08Speaker 2: which I think would slap but it sounds like maybe
- 13:10Speaker 2: this was a little bit trash here.
- 13:12Speaker 1: Yeah, it was navy with like a be dazzled American
- 13:15Speaker 1: flag on it, but like a subtle sequined American flag,
- 13:19Speaker 1: and then like Camel's sweatpants with a drawstring.
- 13:23Speaker 2: Oh okay.
- 13:25Speaker 1: Yeah. Honestly, one of the things that we talked about
- 13:30Speaker 1: when we were like we need to please let me
- 13:33Speaker 1: come on and do the Lcent Twins, which I was like, yeah,
- 13:35Speaker 1: they're so mysterious. Is this idea of us growing up
- 13:40Speaker 1: watching these movies and getting a very perfected, bubblegum pop
- 13:48Speaker 1: version of girlhood and that stark contrast of what their
- 13:53Speaker 1: movie showed despite what you and I went through as
- 13:57Speaker 1: part of girlhood and then eventually Mary, Kate and Ashley
- 13:59Speaker 1: went through as women.
- 14:01Speaker 2: Mm h, yeah, I think when I when it first
- 14:06Speaker 2: popped into my head because I saw the reel that
- 14:08Speaker 2: you had made about like perspective guests and what you're
- 14:11Speaker 2: thinking about that I had such a warped perception from
- 14:17Speaker 2: i'd say maybe eleven years old, thinking that, you know,
- 14:21Speaker 2: I'm going to the beaches of Michigan for a week,
- 14:23Speaker 2: I'm going to come back with a boyfriend, because that's
- 14:25Speaker 2: what Mary Kay and Ashley did, Like they just go
- 14:27Speaker 2: anywhere in any of these movies and end up with
- 14:31Speaker 2: a boyfriend.
- 14:32Speaker 1: And romance should be the number one thing on my mind.
- 14:36Speaker 1: I should have a vacation plane instead of I don't know,
- 14:39Speaker 1: seeing the sights or reading, yeah, or doing.
- 14:41Speaker 2: Enjoying the enjoying the beach, enjoying time with my sister
- 14:45Speaker 2: exactly that.
- 14:46Speaker 1: It just and.
- 14:49Speaker 2: It is interesting. And as I told you, I was
- 14:51Speaker 2: watching Holiday in the Sun before I knew about the
- 14:54Speaker 2: secret Google Drive. So I was watching it in literally
- 14:58Speaker 2: like twenty second, three minute clips, and I got to
- 15:02Speaker 2: the point where like, I'm not gonna try to piece
- 15:03Speaker 2: this together anymore. I'm just gonna watch all these different
- 15:05Speaker 2: clips and whatnot. And there's this one clip where and
- 15:09Speaker 2: I don't know which Witchelson twin it was, and which
- 15:12Speaker 2: like romance it was. But they're at they're at Atlantis
- 15:15Speaker 2: and the Bahamas and the guys talking to her, and
- 15:19Speaker 2: she's supposed to be I think, like the more complicated twin,
- 15:22Speaker 2: because remember that there was always the one that was
- 15:23Speaker 2: sort of like that perfect archetype, and then there was
- 15:25Speaker 2: the complicated one, and then I think they always sort
- 15:29Speaker 2: of played that role, and then as they got older,
- 15:31Speaker 2: they're like, oh, let's switch and they kind of switched
- 15:33Speaker 2: it up as to like who would play which roll.
- 15:35Speaker 2: But the guy, I think they're supposed to be sixteen
- 15:38Speaker 2: in this movie, maybe even fifteen. And the guy was like, oh,
- 15:44Speaker 2: people like you know, like people like to fix up
- 15:46Speaker 2: old houses or go bike riding. You're my hobby. And
- 15:50Speaker 2: I'm like, what the fuck? Who was saying this as
- 15:53Speaker 2: like a seventeen year old guy, And that is so
- 15:55Speaker 2: like you just met this you not even a woman,
- 15:58Speaker 2: but you literally just about each other, And why are
- 16:01Speaker 2: you talking.
- 16:02Speaker 1: About this not you're by hobby?
- 16:04Speaker 2: Yeah, well said it to you.
- 16:11Speaker 1: There's also the one where they go to Paris and like,
- 16:14Speaker 1: I don't know Pastport to Paris, Passport to Paris, I
- 16:17Speaker 1: don't know what you thought of European men as a
- 16:20Speaker 1: young girl during girlhood, but I was like, man, European
- 16:25Speaker 1: men come on strong, because they just like slabber all
- 16:29Speaker 1: over you and follow you from cafe to cafe shouting
- 16:33Speaker 1: compliments and yeah no.
- 16:36Speaker 2: I spent an extensive time in Italy between my freshmen
- 16:40Speaker 2: and sophomore year of college, and I will say I
- 16:43Speaker 2: was I was pretty hot at that time. Like it
- 16:45Speaker 2: happened a little bit, but what I envisioned was that
- 16:48Speaker 2: there'd be a literal parade following me at all times
- 16:50Speaker 2: as I walked around the piazza.
- 16:52Speaker 1: That does not happen, but passport to Paris space she
- 16:56Speaker 1: believed that it happens every The Lizzie McGuire movie makes
- 17:00Speaker 1: you believe that is exactly what happens. That they're so
- 17:03Speaker 1: en hammered with American women that they just follow you
- 17:08Speaker 1: around on your trips.
- 17:10Speaker 2: Or the other thing that just kind of blew my mind.
- 17:13Speaker 2: Number One, I always wanted to go to Atlantis in
- 17:16Speaker 2: the nineties because of Holiday in the Sun, and now
- 17:19Speaker 2: that I'm old and have read reviews about how like
- 17:22Speaker 2: dingy it is, I feel like I missed that window
- 17:25Speaker 2: to go when it was like Camelot of the Sea
- 17:28Speaker 2: and now it's not. But there was a scene with
- 17:31Speaker 2: Megan Fox and they're in the team club where there's
- 17:35Speaker 2: like a DJ and there's one hundred teens all hanging
- 17:38Speaker 2: out and dancing in this team club at Atlantis. Again
- 17:43Speaker 2: like who are all these teens? Why are the whole thing?
- 17:47Speaker 2: And I don't know if maybe maybe that's like how
- 17:49Speaker 2: it was, And the oldsen Twins were a little bit
- 17:50Speaker 2: older than us, so I think when you and I
- 17:52Speaker 2: went on our vacations with our parents, we were not
- 17:54Speaker 2: like going anywhere with a team club. But I'm thinking
- 17:57Speaker 2: about it now as a parent of like someone getting
- 18:00Speaker 2: into girlhood and tweenhood, and I'm like, hell, no, there
- 18:04Speaker 2: is no way that you are ever going unsupervised in
- 18:07Speaker 2: the Bahamas at some tween club.
- 18:10Speaker 1: Yes. No, And I think like it's a very because like,
- 18:14Speaker 1: is it Atlantis basically just a cruise on land like
- 18:18Speaker 1: it is.
- 18:18Speaker 2: So there's like the water park and fish and yeah,
- 18:22Speaker 2: it's definitely it's like it's like a casino on land,
- 18:25Speaker 2: cruise on land exactly. Yeah.
- 18:27Speaker 1: I feel like the teen tween club is something that
- 18:30Speaker 1: only happens on cruise ships.
- 18:32Speaker 2: And I just was on a cruise for Christmas, and
- 18:37Speaker 2: they're they're like the tea the tweens, and teens don't
- 18:40Speaker 2: want to be in the teen club because they think
- 18:42Speaker 2: that that's late.
- 18:43Speaker 1: Of course, yeah, everything about teen anything geared to teen
- 18:48Speaker 1: is lame. But yeah, and just the idea. Also, I
- 18:55Speaker 1: think what the Olsen Twin movies also set up for
- 18:58Speaker 1: me because it was this person in my life who
- 19:02Speaker 1: was like introducing me to the Olsen Twin movies and
- 19:05Speaker 1: had all of them, and that was her hyper focus
- 19:08Speaker 1: was the pretty perfect friends and everyone else like Mary,
- 19:15Speaker 1: Kate and Ashley were always the hot friends. And then
- 19:18Speaker 1: they'd have a gaggle of I don't want to use
- 19:21Speaker 1: the word diverse, but like different friends who were probably
- 19:31Speaker 1: like made sense for them to be friends with. But
- 19:34Speaker 1: also we weren't pulling the guys either, like they weren't
- 19:38Speaker 1: pulling attention away from the Olsen Twins.
- 19:41Speaker 2: Yeah, And I think that's what made Holiday and the
- 19:43Speaker 2: Sun stand out to me so much over the other
- 19:47Speaker 2: movies is that for the first time they actually had
- 19:50Speaker 2: competition for the guys. And it's Megan Fox who even
- 19:54Speaker 2: like pre plastic surgery, pre anything, is just completely studying.
- 19:59Speaker 1: Yeah, I would love to do a deep dive on
- 20:03Speaker 1: everything that we put Megan Fox through during her fame,
- 20:09Speaker 1: and what Brian Austin Green put her through, and just
- 20:12Speaker 1: all of it.
- 20:14Speaker 2: I'm so grateful that I got into podcasts just to
- 20:17Speaker 2: kind of learn and listen because I love pop culture.
- 20:21Speaker 2: And when you and I grew up, particularly in the nineties,
- 20:25Speaker 2: like a sick day for us was you had your
- 20:27Speaker 2: Oprah in the morning, then you took a little rest,
- 20:30Speaker 2: you had the Prices right then you had your lunch,
- 20:33Speaker 2: and then it was time for Jenny Jones and The
- 20:36Speaker 2: moriy Show, like all of these spectacular pieces of entertainment.
- 20:42Speaker 2: But so I was always drawn to it, but I
- 20:45Speaker 2: didn't necessarily know like the underbelly of it. And I
- 20:47Speaker 2: feel like because of podcasts, I'm able to learn about
- 20:50Speaker 2: the underbelly. And I think the Olsen Twins led the
- 20:55Speaker 2: way with this of and they were very tactful in
- 20:57Speaker 2: how they said it that I think had they have
- 21:00Speaker 2: done said some of the things or done some of
- 21:02Speaker 2: the interviews as a starlet now versus when they did it,
- 21:06Speaker 2: they could have just been blatantly like canceled, kind of
- 21:09Speaker 2: like how Catherine Heigel was for a while when she
- 21:11Speaker 2: set limits and said, you know what, you're not going
- 21:12Speaker 2: to treat me like crap. But the Olsen twins are
- 21:15Speaker 2: famous for saying, Noah's a full sentence. We're eighteen years
- 21:19Speaker 2: old now, if we don't want to do something, we're
- 21:21Speaker 2: not going to do it. And I think even at
- 21:24Speaker 2: the time people were like, oh, that's so brady, they're
- 21:26Speaker 2: so ungrateful, blah blah blah. But now, like Go Go Girls,
- 21:31Speaker 2: that is amazing that they felt comfortable saying that out
- 21:35Speaker 2: loud to like, you know, David Letterman, and that they
- 21:39Speaker 2: they had just sort of like reached that point of
- 21:41Speaker 2: like what they sort of wanted to do in the
- 21:43Speaker 2: entertainment business. That they were like what I like, if
- 21:45Speaker 2: you if you're mad at us, you're mad. And that
- 21:48Speaker 2: ties back to like Megan Fox who said the same thing,
- 21:50Speaker 2: like Michael Bay's a dick, and she was the one
- 21:53Speaker 2: that was willing to say that and then she got
- 21:55Speaker 2: canceled for a bit. But now that it's okay and
- 21:58Speaker 2: people are able to sort of like pull back that
- 22:01Speaker 2: curtain a bit, I'm just so grateful that there is
- 22:04Speaker 2: this dialogue for people to see that, like now some
- 22:07Speaker 2: of these like men in power in Hollywood are like
- 22:10Speaker 2: they are not They're not all that, and they're dangerous.
- 22:14Speaker 1: It has to come from owning so much of your
- 22:17Speaker 1: entertainment work and having your parents run your entertainment company
- 22:21Speaker 1: because they were so insular to everyone else's version of fame.
- 22:27Speaker 1: So like Amanda Vines was never going to tell David Letterman,
- 22:31Speaker 1: I'm not answering that you're gross, but like Mary Kay
- 22:35Speaker 1: and Ashley would because number one, they're probably not used
- 22:38Speaker 1: to gross men being involved in their career because their
- 22:42Speaker 1: parents are hiring everybody or they're vetting everybody.
- 22:45Speaker 2: And I'm going back to my theory. I think Andrea.
- 22:49Speaker 2: I think Andrea and Scott. I think they had a
- 22:51Speaker 2: blueprint and this is what they use because now look
- 22:55Speaker 2: at Taylor Swift owning all her masters again.
- 22:57Speaker 1: Oh my god, Andrew and Scott call in in my head,
- 23:00Speaker 1: am I envisioning the couple from uh two of a Kind? Yeah,
- 23:05Speaker 1: but that's about what you look like. And now I
- 23:10Speaker 1: think about Elizabeth Olsen, the youngest One, love her, love
- 23:15Speaker 1: her Wanda vision is perfect television. You cannot convince me otherwise.
- 23:20Speaker 1: And she was perfect as Wanda Maxima. But how she
- 23:26Speaker 1: had no problem telling press Marvel will call if they'll call,
- 23:32Speaker 1: and if not, okay, when everyone is so thirsty for
- 23:38Speaker 1: their mind, I mean, Robert Downey Junior is going back
- 23:41Speaker 1: to play a whole new guy, right.
- 23:44Speaker 2: And here's the other piece of it. That again, as
- 23:47Speaker 2: someone who just was ferociously consuming entertainment media when I
- 23:50Speaker 2: was younger and then got into public relations early on
- 23:56Speaker 2: in my career and had stuff that was sort of
- 23:58Speaker 2: adjacent to celebrity, not realizing that for the most part,
- 24:04Speaker 2: a lot of celebrities can just go on and live
- 24:06Speaker 2: their day. They can go to Arawon, they can go
- 24:08Speaker 2: to Gelson's, they can go to lunch, they can go shopping,
- 24:11Speaker 2: they can go to the hospital to pick up their mom.
- 24:14Speaker 2: That I always just assumed that there were and there
- 24:18Speaker 2: are there's There are certain people like Britney Spears. We
- 24:20Speaker 2: know this that people just were assigned to be outside
- 24:22Speaker 2: our house. But for the most part, if you don't
- 24:25Speaker 2: want to be, if you don't want your picture on
- 24:28Speaker 2: the Dumag grid, it doesn't need to be. And a
- 24:31Speaker 2: lot of those folks who have it, it's because they've
- 24:33Speaker 2: called their publicists, and their publicists have called tm Z
- 24:37Speaker 2: to say Hey, Sutton Foster and Hugh Jackman are going
- 24:41Speaker 2: to be like canoodling on the streets of Santa Monica.
- 24:44Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, what a coincidence. It's the day before
- 24:46Speaker 2: Younger drops on Netflix again. But like all this, like
- 24:50Speaker 2: that interweb that, like I didn't realize existed that I
- 24:53Speaker 2: think for the Olsen twins, I think they have they
- 24:57Speaker 2: picked up on that, and there I don't I I'm
- 25:00Speaker 2: hoping there isn't some I would assume it's a much
- 25:02Speaker 2: more glamorous, but like I could see how there'd be
- 25:04Speaker 2: some like grey gardens ass situation happening with each of them.
- 25:08Speaker 2: They each have their own gray gardens. But I don't
- 25:11Speaker 2: think so. I think maybe they're just like moving about,
- 25:14Speaker 2: moving about the Hampton's moving about New York City, and
- 25:18Speaker 2: it's like a non event because they're total they don't
- 25:22Speaker 2: make it an event.
- 25:23Speaker 1: Well and honestly, now, all of a sudden, the episode
- 25:25Speaker 1: has turned from oh poor Mary, Kate and Ashley Olsen
- 25:28Speaker 1: got a really rough go when it came to how
- 25:30Speaker 1: gross we were all to them too. Oh my god,
- 25:32Speaker 1: they owned an entertainment company probably by the age of nine,
- 25:39Speaker 1: and it still just boggles my mind. That their parents
- 25:43Speaker 1: have the forethought to put all of that in their
- 25:45Speaker 1: name even though they weren't old enough to own a
- 25:47Speaker 1: company and or run a company.
- 25:50Speaker 2: I know, I'm looking up what their parents did. I
- 25:52Speaker 2: want to I think they were in the biz, but
- 25:54Speaker 2: I don't want to be wrong. Also in parents jobs.
- 25:59Speaker 2: Oh okay, so this is a People magazine article, so
- 26:02Speaker 2: do with that as you will. But it said that
- 26:04Speaker 2: Jarnett was a former ballet dancer and David worked as
- 26:09Speaker 2: a commercial real estate investor. Okay, so it sounds like
- 26:13Speaker 2: maybe they probably. I think I would imagine based on
- 26:19Speaker 2: those two like former careers, that there were people in
- 26:21Speaker 2: their circles that they could call and say, like, hey, friend,
- 26:24Speaker 2: that's been in a lifetime movie, how should I do this?
- 26:27Speaker 1: Yeah? And oh my gosh, because I think so there's
- 26:34Speaker 1: this whole part of their career where they don't want
- 26:37Speaker 1: to be involved in any like they're not going to
- 26:40Speaker 1: nineties con to sit with John Samos.
- 26:47Speaker 2: Wait real quickly, can I just say, the next time
- 26:50Speaker 2: I'm on fixing famous people, I think my middle name,
- 26:53Speaker 2: guess is going to be Jarnett.
- 26:55Speaker 1: Yes, Jarnette, what a great names.
- 26:58Speaker 2: So goad, Oh but yes, nineties Pound with John Satos.
- 27:03Speaker 1: Right, they're not going to sit next to nineties con
- 27:05Speaker 1: with Kandasburg. And that's who I was trying to. I
- 27:07Speaker 1: was like, what the fuck's her name?
- 27:08Speaker 2: Ccb CCCB Cameron. It is unfair, how incredibly gorgeous that
- 27:18Speaker 2: woman has aged?
- 27:19Speaker 1: Yes, considering that she's filled with hate, yes.
- 27:23Speaker 2: And that probably is why she looks so good. But
- 27:26Speaker 2: anytime I see some clip of her, I'm like, holy moly,
- 27:29Speaker 2: you look like eighty billion dollars.
- 27:31Speaker 1: You look so good, but in an effortless way that
- 27:34Speaker 1: I don't understand, because it's not like she all of
- 27:39Speaker 1: a sudden, I'm like, did you get your lipstone or
- 27:41Speaker 1: something like it? She just continuously looks like DJ Tanner. Yes, yes,
- 27:46Speaker 1: like exactly what you think DJ Tanner would look like
- 27:49Speaker 1: growing up. And so does.
- 27:53Speaker 2: DJ looks good too, Stephanie and yeah yeah, Stephanie and
- 27:58Speaker 2: Andrea Webber what was Kimmy Gibler look really good?
- 28:03Speaker 1: Yes? So they all look really good. I'm sure none
- 28:07Speaker 1: of them talked to Candae now that Fuller House is done,
- 28:09Speaker 1: because again she's full of hate, but they eat. So
- 28:15Speaker 1: there's this fact that like, because they were America's babies
- 28:18Speaker 1: in the nineties and Full House was everywhere, and so
- 28:22Speaker 1: were the Olsen Twins, and we knew that Michelle Tanner
- 28:27Speaker 1: was played by at like it's one of the first
- 28:29Speaker 1: names that pops up. I think during the theme song
- 28:32Speaker 1: of the show, that Mary Kate is played by these
- 28:34Speaker 1: two twin babies. That there's this ownership that I think
- 28:40Speaker 1: America has that like Netflix had to write in a
- 28:43Speaker 1: joke as to why they're not in Fuller House, and
- 28:46Speaker 1: like almost that there's like some animosity between the rest
- 28:50Speaker 1: of the cast because I don't know, probably because the
- 28:53Speaker 1: Olsen twins were business owners and then became fashion moguls
- 28:58Speaker 1: and you guys were doing nothing.
- 28:59Speaker 2: I don't know, Yes, And this was another thing when
- 29:03Speaker 2: you and I were talking that like totally grinds my
- 29:06Speaker 2: gears that these grown like grown grown as people, like
- 29:12Speaker 2: I think John Samos is in his sixties now, like
- 29:16Speaker 2: that they're still whining and making headline fodder about the
- 29:21Speaker 2: fact that the Olsen Twins, who I were, they seven,
- 29:25Speaker 2: Like the oldest they could have been when Full House
- 29:27Speaker 2: went off the air was seven. That these kids who
- 29:31Speaker 2: probably barely remember most of this, aren't still like in
- 29:37Speaker 2: your like weird aura that you just do for clicks
- 29:40Speaker 2: and likes, Like it's the whole thing is just it.
- 29:43Speaker 2: It is astounding to me because also now that I'm like,
- 29:46Speaker 2: oh kids, you realize they are like they've got fish
- 29:49Speaker 2: full brains. So someone that was super significant to them
- 29:52Speaker 2: when they were eighteen months, they are going to have
- 29:54Speaker 2: zero recollection of said person unless they're seeing them every
- 29:58Speaker 2: single day or very regularly or facetiming with them when
- 30:02Speaker 2: they're seven years old.
- 30:03Speaker 1: Correct. I mean also I just know this because of
- 30:08Speaker 1: my expansive knowledge on One Tree Hill, because it's my
- 30:12Speaker 1: whole personality. A little he's not a little boy anymore.
- 30:17Speaker 1: He's a grown man. But when he was a little boy,
- 30:20Speaker 1: the little boy that played Jamie Haley and Nathan's son
- 30:26Speaker 1: was so harassed by the fan base and was so
- 30:30Speaker 1: bullied by them because they're like they're jumping in the
- 30:33Speaker 1: shark with this eight year old who talks too smart
- 30:36Speaker 1: and talks like a grown up and he thinks he's funny.
- 30:39Speaker 1: Why is he getting funny lines that he doesn't do
- 30:42Speaker 1: to that millennial con like he like it's very rare
- 30:46Speaker 1: for him to come out and do an event or whatever.
- 30:49Speaker 1: And I think it just like really opens up the
- 30:51Speaker 1: fact that like maybe we just like let kids who
- 30:56Speaker 1: want nothing to do with their first job that they
- 30:59Speaker 1: had when they were eighteen months old, let it lie.
- 31:03Speaker 1: And I do think that John Stamos like really heads
- 31:06Speaker 1: that campaign of like they should be more involved with us?
- 31:09Speaker 1: Why yes?
- 31:11Speaker 2: And I because I think a lot of this too,
- 31:14Speaker 2: with Dave Coolier's cancer battle has like popped up again
- 31:18Speaker 2: because John Stamos of course has to like get in
- 31:21Speaker 2: all the headlines about Dave Coolia's cancer. But I saw
- 31:25Speaker 2: a headline where and I can't remember who which of
- 31:29Speaker 2: them said it, but essentially they talked about like the
- 31:32Speaker 2: healing they were able to experience with the Olsen Twins
- 31:35Speaker 2: when they came to Bob Saggatt's funeral.
- 31:37Speaker 1: That's gross.
- 31:39Speaker 2: It's so gross.
- 31:41Speaker 1: That's great. It like comes off as very predatory, like
- 31:45Speaker 1: why well, And I think it's just like how and
- 31:49Speaker 1: again this goes back to the countdown until the Olsen
- 31:53Speaker 1: Twins are eighteen literally just like how indignant and possessive
- 32:01Speaker 1: men are of women who are just standing right next
- 32:04Speaker 1: to them in a room, and how they feel like
- 32:06Speaker 1: they deserve our time and our emotions and we should
- 32:10Speaker 1: always be playing towards whatever ego fit they're having in
- 32:14Speaker 1: that moment, and I think it's an ego fit.
- 32:18Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely. And I wonder too, with the prevalence of
- 32:23Speaker 2: TikTok Instagram paparazzi who were stationed right out there watching
- 32:28Speaker 2: the funeral, Like if this had happened twenty years ago,
- 32:33Speaker 2: I don't necessarily know if like Mary, Kate and Ashley
- 32:36Speaker 2: would have bothered going to the funeral. I feel like
- 32:38Speaker 2: they probably felt like, Okay, we have to do this
- 32:40Speaker 2: because if we don't, like the internet will truly crucify us.
- 32:44Speaker 1: Yeah, well, and I would. I also like understand, like
- 32:50Speaker 1: I guess I understand showing up to a funeral because
- 32:52Speaker 1: of the like, okay, that was a person. He did
- 32:56Speaker 1: play our TV dad. It turns out that Bob Sacket
- 32:59Speaker 1: was like really good to the kids on set, so
- 33:02Speaker 1: maybe they have some fond memory of him at least
- 33:05Speaker 1: being nice to them. He barred them from all of
- 33:07Speaker 1: his nasty, raunchy comedy tour stuff, and I think that
- 33:11Speaker 1: that was a beautiful choice. Thank you, Bob, Thank you Bob.
- 33:16Speaker 1: So like, if it was gonna be anybody, I think
- 33:19Speaker 1: it would be Bob Saget. Whose funeral or wedding or
- 33:22Speaker 1: whatever they show up to, I think they'd give a
- 33:25Speaker 1: big fuck you to John Stamos, because it's my understanding
- 33:28Speaker 1: he wanted them fired.
- 33:29Speaker 2: Yeah he did, and he can still talk. Think he
- 33:32Speaker 2: still talks about it. You and I are mid thirties
- 33:36Speaker 2: women who are younger than Mary Kata n Ashley, and
- 33:39Speaker 2: he is on podcasts this year talking about getting Mary
- 33:44Speaker 2: Kaya Nashley fired.
- 33:45Speaker 1: It's in his memoir like and also that memoir, thank
- 33:51Speaker 1: you Chelsea Devontaeys and Glamorous Trash for doing it. Opened
- 33:54Speaker 1: my eyes to Uncle Jesse because like, how in love
- 33:57Speaker 1: were you with Uncle Jesse during Full House?
- 34:02Speaker 2: I was that was pretty in love about this Jesse.
- 34:04Speaker 2: I'm yeah, But now I'm watching back, I'm like, oh
- 34:08Speaker 2: my gosh, all these men have arrested development. It's terrible.
- 34:11Speaker 2: And also Dandy Tanner is a thirty two year old
- 34:14Speaker 2: widower or something like that with three children. I'm like,
- 34:17Speaker 2: oh my goodness.
- 34:18Speaker 1: The nineties, the nineties, I was in love with Uncle
- 34:22Speaker 1: Jesse to the point that when Chelsea Davonte's let the
- 34:26Speaker 1: Patreon members know of Glamorous Trash that they were covering
- 34:28Speaker 1: John Steamos's book. I could literally I watched the music
- 34:36Speaker 1: video that John.
- 34:37Speaker 2: I can sing it. I could sing forever right now wherever?
- 34:40Speaker 1: Yeah, And I realized that I could. I actually knew
- 34:44Speaker 1: the music video beat by beat. I was like, oh
- 34:46Speaker 1: my gosh, I remember the candles like the sheer curtains
- 34:54Speaker 1: forever and also like John Stamos, I don't know cut
- 34:59Speaker 1: a rec heard get off of the Beach Boys. If
- 35:03Speaker 1: your colleague was to be a rock star, why didn't
- 35:05Speaker 1: you do that?
- 35:07Speaker 2: He's one of those people. And I'm gonna pair in
- 35:10Speaker 2: the guy who plays Smith from Sex and the City
- 35:12Speaker 2: into this as well. But I think there are just
- 35:14Speaker 2: some people that are so aesthetically beautiful that there's like
- 35:19Speaker 2: no place for them, Like they they can't go anywhere.
- 35:24Speaker 1: I think he's the reason why I taught myself to
- 35:26Speaker 1: like yogurt. I like exactly one type of yog I don't, okay, yeah,
- 35:32Speaker 1: and I only like they're whipped orange creamsicle yogurt. I
- 35:36Speaker 1: don't even think that they have it anymore, And therefore
- 35:38Speaker 1: I've stopped eating yogurt. I only eat plain dan AND's
- 35:42Speaker 1: vanilla yogurt with granola and chocolate chips in it, but yeah,
- 35:47Speaker 1: do you remember his like beautiful yogurt commercials? And I
- 35:52Speaker 1: was like, oh my god, he's still got to look
- 35:53Speaker 1: at that hair.
- 35:55Speaker 2: And here's the thing, like a as I spent the
- 35:58Speaker 2: whole podcast Slammingham. If he pops up in my ice screen,
- 36:01Speaker 2: I'm gonna I'm gonna watch. I will watch and be like, damn,
- 36:05Speaker 2: he looks so good and.
- 36:06Speaker 1: Then be like gross. John Stamos, it.
- 36:08Speaker 2: Was super short lived, but it was called Grandfather where
- 36:12Speaker 2: Josh Peck came. I loved that show. I so wish
- 36:16Speaker 2: it had gotten a second season because I thought it
- 36:18Speaker 2: was hysterical.
- 36:20Speaker 1: Yes, and so John Samos is like Memoirs eye opening
- 36:25Speaker 1: to just like he. He and Matthew Perry May He
- 36:29Speaker 1: Rest in Peace had the same idea of like, any
- 36:32Speaker 1: beautiful woman should just get to date them, and I'm like,
- 36:37Speaker 1: leave women alone.
- 36:39Speaker 2: Didn't Rebecca Romaine after his memoir came out, because he
- 36:43Speaker 2: like what he made it like because they were they
- 36:45Speaker 2: weren't married that long, but I seemed to recall similar
- 36:48Speaker 2: with the Olden Twigs. He just dramaticized their relationship and
- 36:51Speaker 2: their turmoil, and he was so devastated from the revorse. Blah,
- 36:54Speaker 2: blah blah, and afterward she's like, I'm okay, yeah, yeah,
- 36:57Speaker 2: we were married. We were married eighteen months.
- 36:59Speaker 1: Okay, oh my god, it was only eighteen months.
- 37:03Speaker 2: It could have been long. I don't think it was
- 37:05Speaker 2: very long.
- 37:06Speaker 1: Rebecca recon it's Rebecca because that's the one marriage of
- 37:12Speaker 1: his that I remember. And hers, I guess she's she's.
- 37:17Speaker 2: Jerry O'Connell. But I think they're still together.
- 37:21Speaker 1: I do like me some Jeri O'Connell. Uh. But yeah,
- 37:26Speaker 1: Like it's just and again, I think it's just like
- 37:29Speaker 1: an ego thing. And I think those parents did the
- 37:32Speaker 1: smartest thing by just like putting them all in their
- 37:36Speaker 1: own movie production company, and just like it really removed
- 37:41Speaker 1: them from the male ego in a way that I
- 37:43Speaker 1: would be blessed. Would you imagine just showing it up
- 37:47Speaker 1: to work all day long? And the worst ego you
- 37:50Speaker 1: might have to encounter is your father's, right. Yeah, And
- 37:55Speaker 1: at least with fathers you can be like Dad, shut up,
- 37:58Speaker 1: Like you can't tell David Letterman to shut up. I
- 38:01Speaker 1: mean I probably have in my head like the Olsen
- 38:04Speaker 1: Twins literally walked so Renee Rap could run with the eugh.
- 38:09Speaker 2: Oh god, Yeah, I love her. I love her, I
- 38:13Speaker 2: love Reneep, I love it her.
- 38:16Speaker 1: Concert tickets for Chicago are horrifically expensive, so I won't
- 38:21Speaker 1: be going, but I support her. Hud dollars?
- 38:25Speaker 2: Are you kidding me?
- 38:26Speaker 1: What probably happened was I missed the pre sale and
- 38:29Speaker 1: now they're all robots trying to sell pay six hundred
- 38:32Speaker 1: dollars tickets.
- 38:33Speaker 2: But that is crazy.
- 38:34Speaker 1: Okay.
- 38:35Speaker 2: So Rebecca Romaine and John Samis were married for seven years.
- 38:38Speaker 2: That's like just a maritime but she was just like okay,
- 38:44Speaker 2: like we were young. It happens.
- 38:47Speaker 1: Again, these men who won't move on from the first
- 38:50Speaker 1: woman who dumped them and told them no.
- 38:55Speaker 2: Well, did you did you listen to Fixing Famous people today?
- 38:58Speaker 2: When they talked about Julia McMahon passing and the line
- 39:03Speaker 2: from Nip Tuck that like, behind every beautiful woman is
- 39:06Speaker 2: a man who's tired of sleeping with her, And I
- 39:09Speaker 2: think it's there's also that flip side behind every beautiful man,
- 39:13Speaker 2: like John Samos, there's a woman who's tired of his
- 39:15Speaker 2: shit and can't let it down.
- 39:18Speaker 1: Can't let it down. Oh, I know that was such
- 39:21Speaker 1: a loss because I am a huge charmed girly and
- 39:25Speaker 1: I watched all of Nip Tuck.
- 39:27Speaker 2: My sister was a huge Charms girly and I was
- 39:31Speaker 2: a huge Niptuck girl. So that was I. I think
- 39:35Speaker 2: as I get older, celebrity deaths start to hit me
- 39:38Speaker 2: a little bit more. But that one was an audible
- 39:41Speaker 2: gasp when I saw.
- 39:42Speaker 1: It, right, and I was with a bunch of people
- 39:44Speaker 1: who never watched Charmed or Nicktok. So I'm just like
- 39:47Speaker 1: pointing to his picture in the phone in the phone
- 39:49Speaker 1: at a Fourth of July barbecue, b like, but I'm sad.
- 39:53Speaker 1: I'm sad, and Chris de Rosa is in Provincetown and
- 39:58Speaker 1: I can't just call him to be like worse. We're sad,
- 40:05Speaker 1: but yeah, I okay. One of the other things that
- 40:09Speaker 1: I wanted to talk about is how two almost identical
- 40:14Speaker 1: women who are beautiful in all of the same ways
- 40:17Speaker 1: and successful in all of the same ways because they
- 40:19Speaker 1: kept their careers pretty linked, also could not escape the well,
- 40:24Speaker 1: of course there's a hotter twin. Yeah, yeah, and it's like,
- 40:28Speaker 1: what are you talking about, to the point where Mary
- 40:30Speaker 1: Kate said out loud, I just wish I was as
- 40:32Speaker 1: pretty as Ashley. What are you talking about? Yes?
- 40:36Speaker 2: Yeah, And I remember two of like everyone. I don't
- 40:41Speaker 2: remember it now, but I think it was one has
- 40:44Speaker 2: some mole somewhere on her face that the other doesn't.
- 40:46Speaker 2: But that in the nineties everyone knew that's how you
- 40:49Speaker 2: took you like told them apart.
- 40:53Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't even I mean I as a respect
- 40:57Speaker 1: point to women who are twins and how gross people
- 41:00Speaker 1: are about twins, especially female twins, I always at least
- 41:05Speaker 1: find the way to tell you apart because I'm like,
- 41:09Speaker 1: it's annoying. People are individuals like I will not let
- 41:13Speaker 1: you be Mary Kate and Ashley so I. But as
- 41:16Speaker 1: a child, I never like it was a toss up
- 41:18Speaker 1: if I ever remembered which one had the mole and
- 41:21Speaker 1: which one did it. But the fact that like literally
- 41:24Speaker 1: these two have gone through life all together and still
- 41:28Speaker 1: we as a gross society of people who can't just
- 41:31Speaker 1: let women live. Were like, but Ashley's hotter, right, and
- 41:36Speaker 1: it's like no, right.
- 41:37Speaker 2: And also that is that, Yeah, Mary Kate was the
- 41:41Speaker 2: bad one because she had her eating disorder struggles and
- 41:44Speaker 2: she's the one who more publicly had issues with drugs.
- 41:47Speaker 2: And I think there is talk about a complicated figure
- 41:52Speaker 2: in misogyny. Spencer Pratt, who was their high school class
- 42:00Speaker 2: mate and one of his first like trying to break in,
- 42:06Speaker 2: trying to like get in the know with Hollywood. Was
- 42:08Speaker 2: he I believe either I don't know if he was
- 42:11Speaker 2: successful or not. This is in the pup Apologist deep
- 42:14Speaker 2: dive of Mary Kay to Nashley that I completely recommend
- 42:17Speaker 2: to everyone who loves them, who wants to learn more
- 42:19Speaker 2: about them, that he tried or did sell a video
- 42:25Speaker 2: tape of one of the Olsen twins like essentially drunk
- 42:29Speaker 2: at a high school party.
- 42:30Speaker 1: Oh, Spencer, Spencer, stop, Yeah, my darkest days we're doing.
- 42:40Speaker 1: Not that I was experiencing the LA fires firsthand because
- 42:43Speaker 1: I lived next to Lake Michigan, but like my darkest
- 42:46Speaker 1: days on TikTok in my TikTok career, was watching Spencer
- 42:50Speaker 1: Pratt on the beaches during the fires making sense and
- 42:54Speaker 1: I'm like, ah ah, no.
- 42:56Speaker 2: I know we're in dark times now that I look
- 42:59Speaker 2: at his and I'm like so supportive of Heidi, like
- 43:02Speaker 2: you go, Spencer, that I just there's I like, if
- 43:06Speaker 2: ten years ago me could like see how I feel
- 43:09Speaker 2: sometimes when I see Spencer Pratt waving a burrito and dancing.
- 43:12Speaker 1: Yeah, she'd want to stay me, not not Spencer Pratt
- 43:16Speaker 1: making sense right, yeah, I was.
- 43:18Speaker 2: Like husband, yeah.
- 43:21Speaker 1: Yeah, not him having kids who knew. I was like, ah,
- 43:25Speaker 1: get off TikTok because like literally he was just talking
- 43:29Speaker 1: and he's just like in this and that, and I
- 43:31Speaker 1: was like, yeah, Spencer, oh my god, you've grown. It's
- 43:34Speaker 1: like how I mistake mistook Stassy Schroeder when she stopped
- 43:39Speaker 1: yelling as much on vander Pump Rules. And I was like,
- 43:42Speaker 1: she's so grown, She's so mature now. And Annie, best
- 43:46Speaker 1: friend of the podcast, had to tell me, no, she
- 43:49Speaker 1: was racist literally like three years ago. Namily, that wasn't
- 43:52Speaker 1: early on in the show. And I was like, oh no,
- 43:56Speaker 1: oh no, I was tricked yet again by time because
- 43:59Speaker 1: I can't time, but yeah, oh that's so gross. Of
- 44:04Speaker 1: course Spencer Pratt had some also. Could you imagine the
- 44:08Speaker 1: flip phone video of oh yeah, Mary Kay and or
- 44:11Speaker 1: Ashley drunk at a party, and of course Spencer Pratt
- 44:14Speaker 1: has it, and of course he downloaded it to his
- 44:17Speaker 1: Google drive or whatever to try it.
- 44:20Speaker 2: I was once at an event and Prince Harry was
- 44:23Speaker 2: there and I had like those like tiny camera cannon
- 44:27Speaker 2: cameras that we would all bring with us to the bars,
- 44:29Speaker 2: and I like took like video of him. And at
- 44:32Speaker 2: the time I knew someone who works at CMC, and
- 44:35Speaker 2: I was like, do you want this, like I could
- 44:37Speaker 2: be used three hundred dollars.
- 44:39Speaker 1: And she was like, no, this is born.
- 44:42Speaker 2: But of course I you know, honestly, I think they
- 44:44Speaker 2: should have taken my footage because he left the event.
- 44:46Speaker 2: It was in Washington, d C. He left the event
- 44:49Speaker 2: and went to Vegas and that's when he got in
- 44:51Speaker 2: so much trouble in Vegas with the with his Shenanigans.
- 44:55Speaker 1: See, and they could have lied and said that your
- 44:57Speaker 1: footage was from Vegas. Yes, nothing on TMZ is real,
- 45:02Speaker 1: or they could have.
- 45:03Speaker 2: Been like here he is looking out of sorts, like
- 45:06Speaker 2: we can tell going down a dangerous path.
- 45:10Speaker 1: No, that's hilarious. My little Canon camera was magenta. I
- 45:14Speaker 1: could put picture.
- 45:15Speaker 2: I was like, maroon, Maroon. Can you believe we used
- 45:20Speaker 2: to put them on our wrist and carry like everywhere
- 45:23Speaker 2: like purses?
- 45:24Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 45:24Speaker 2: Yeah uh?
- 45:26Speaker 1: And then oh do you know what I miss? I
- 45:28Speaker 1: miss my Facebook being organized by album. It was so
- 45:32Speaker 1: much easier to find photos that way.
- 45:34Speaker 2: But can you I just like now and I we
- 45:38Speaker 2: did so much more admin work air quotes than we
- 45:41Speaker 2: really needed to back in the day, and like, for
- 45:43Speaker 2: the joy of it that I cannot imagine sitting down
- 45:47Speaker 2: and being like, I'm going to create an album. I'm
- 45:49Speaker 2: going to label se album, and then I'm going to
- 45:52Speaker 2: put a caption for every photo and then upload like
- 45:55Speaker 2: three hundred and sixty seven photos of some barbecue.
- 45:58Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, and our cousin's first birthday. Yeah yeah. Literally,
- 46:05Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, but take me back, take me back.
- 46:08Speaker 2: Well, especially you and I. I always because my husband's
- 46:11Speaker 2: a California boy, I always just say, like, growing up
- 46:14Speaker 2: in the Chicago suburbs in the nineties with the Bulls,
- 46:19Speaker 2: it was truly childhood Camelot.
- 46:22Speaker 1: You know that. Mycelsor doesn't remember how into the Bulls
- 46:25Speaker 1: we were for that one year that they like were unstoppable,
- 46:29Speaker 1: and it was like, I go, I knew all their names.
- 46:31Speaker 1: I could pick out Scottie Pippen in the street.
- 46:34Speaker 2: Oh no, I yeah, I was completely obsessed. And our
- 46:39Speaker 2: our chiropractor had box seats.
- 46:42Speaker 1: Oh.
- 46:42Speaker 2: So occasionally they'd just be like, oh, we can't go
- 46:45Speaker 2: you guys want these, So we'd go to box like
- 46:46Speaker 2: we'd go to Christmas Eve at the United Senator watching
- 46:51Speaker 2: Michael Jordan play basketball, and it's oughn it can't be replicated.
- 46:56Speaker 1: I have literal sense memories of like it's summer time
- 47:00Speaker 1: and I'm watching nine to one one, which is a
- 47:03Speaker 1: dramatization of real life nine one one calls. And the
- 47:08Speaker 1: one that I have the most vivid memory of is
- 47:10Speaker 1: a kid drowning in a pool, so like, and I
- 47:13Speaker 1: had nightmares because I was in the second grade. I'm like,
- 47:15Speaker 1: who's letting me watch unsupervised with the TV with my babysitter,
- 47:20Speaker 1: And then like and then it'd be like nighttime. I'd
- 47:23Speaker 1: be like, it's time for the Bowls, let's do it.
- 47:26Speaker 1: And my sister has no mom, She's like, what are
- 47:28Speaker 1: you talking about. I go, I can literally picture the
- 47:32Speaker 1: TV and like us sitting in the living room. Yeah,
- 47:35Speaker 1: I was like, uh, we were all into the bulls.
- 47:38Speaker 1: Excuse me. But also just like growing up in the
- 47:41Speaker 1: Midwest and watching something like Passport to Paris.
- 47:45Speaker 2: Like like sophisticated.
- 47:48Speaker 1: Yes, well, trying my hardest to fit myself into like
- 47:53Speaker 1: one of those stupid rap skirts that's not a rap
- 47:55Speaker 1: skirt but presents it like a Yeah.
- 47:59Speaker 2: I remember always being jealous of like the kids who
- 48:04Speaker 2: went who would go to Mexico, Jamaica, Atlantis and come
- 48:08Speaker 2: back with like the beaf braids in their hair from
- 48:10Speaker 2: the spring break and be like all I did was
- 48:13Speaker 2: go to the Wisconsin Dells.
- 48:15Speaker 1: Where did I get my hair wrapped? It was not
- 48:18Speaker 1: a Caribbean location. It was probably disney World. I got
- 48:22Speaker 1: a hair wrap at disney World.
- 48:26Speaker 2: My sister got it. My sister got it done once
- 48:30Speaker 2: in Michigan on the beaches, and it lasted like a
- 48:33Speaker 2: second because she was like, no way, this hurts so much.
- 48:36Speaker 2: After my parents spent what probably is the equivalent of
- 48:39Speaker 2: like seventy five dollars.
- 48:40Speaker 1: If I there's no one more money anxious than I am.
- 48:44Speaker 1: So if I'm going to wrap my hair in embroidery floss,
- 48:48Speaker 1: I'm literally keeping it in until the piece of balls
- 48:52Speaker 1: falls out. Yeah. Like it literally just fell out one day,
- 48:56Speaker 1: probably while I was at school, and I was like
- 48:58Speaker 1: bortified as it is like dangling three feet below my
- 49:02Speaker 1: actual hair. Yeah, I I don't know. I would love
- 49:09Speaker 1: for there to be not a grown up Mary Kate
- 49:13Speaker 1: and Ashley renaissance. I think we have that in Elizabeth
- 49:16Speaker 1: and honestly leave her alone too, And I just want
- 49:20Speaker 1: them to be left alone and to sit on their
- 49:22Speaker 1: piles of heaps of Passport to Paris money. But I
- 49:26Speaker 1: would love for the youth to find the Ulson movies
- 49:30Speaker 1: and just be like, see, this is what your childhood
- 49:33Speaker 1: could have been, just watching these shitty movies like.
- 49:36Speaker 2: All the gen Z. Like what needs to happen is
- 49:40Speaker 2: gen Z needs to find out about the Google Drive
- 49:43Speaker 2: and it become like i'mk and a talk and all
- 49:46Speaker 2: it is is like analysis of their movies.
- 49:49Speaker 1: Well, because here's a sad truth too. And I confirmed
- 49:53Speaker 1: it with a handful of people that I know who
- 49:55Speaker 1: work in television and movies and journalism, and maybe a
- 49:59Speaker 1: hand fullest three I don't know. I one day woke
- 50:03Speaker 1: up and I realized there's no double Double Trouble Halloween movie.
- 50:10Speaker 1: There's no now and then hitting the movie theater anymore.
- 50:14Speaker 1: There's truly no entertainment for kids who are like eight
- 50:20Speaker 1: to thirteen, Like, you know, you're not really you're like
- 50:24Speaker 1: a big kid, so no one knows what to do
- 50:26Speaker 1: with you. But you're also not fifteen, so no one's
- 50:29Speaker 1: taking you to signs looking dates.
- 50:32Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I thought that at a drive in movie theater.
- 50:35Speaker 2: Oh scary. So it was scary scary, but you are right.
- 50:39Speaker 2: One of my one of my children had a ton
- 50:41Speaker 2: seleectomy and you just have to lay on your butt
- 50:45Speaker 2: for two weeks. And I was after a certain point,
- 50:49Speaker 2: I'm like, there's only so much like liv and Maddie
- 50:52Speaker 2: or whatever, like smut from the Disney Disney streaming service
- 50:56Speaker 2: she's watching. So I found It Takes Two. That's the
- 51:00Speaker 2: one out of all of them. You can find that
- 51:02Speaker 2: on streaming. So we did, like It Takes two Freaky Friday,
- 51:06Speaker 2: just like all of the like that whole repertoire of
- 51:09Speaker 2: stuff we watched, or that we had like slightly aged
- 51:11Speaker 2: at it, but we still watched. And that's what I
- 51:14Speaker 2: let her watch.
- 51:16Speaker 1: We melted our be chest copy of It Takes Two.
- 51:20Speaker 1: We would watch it and rewind it, and we just
- 51:23Speaker 1: kept it on for an entire summer.
- 51:26Speaker 2: Steve Gutenberg, like where did he? Where did he go?
- 51:29Speaker 2: Why isn't he everywhere? I need a Steve Gutenberg renaissance? Please,
- 51:33Speaker 2: Ryan Murphy, Netflix, someone just like create him in a series.
- 51:38Speaker 1: For him, talk about the original daddy? Where is my Daddy?
- 51:43Speaker 1: Stevie Goody, Like, get him him out of retirement. I'm waiting,
- 51:49Speaker 1: and I think.
- 51:50Speaker 2: He popped up during the LA fires doing like sexy
- 51:52Speaker 2: things like helping animals or something. So let's let's, you know,
- 51:56Speaker 2: let's bring him.
- 51:57Speaker 1: Back with his enormous amount of chest hair that As
- 51:59Speaker 1: an eight year world I was like, ooh ooh, yeah, Christy,
- 52:06Speaker 1: get on that, get on.
- 52:07Speaker 2: S you got Christy ri Ip. I loved her another yes,
- 52:13Speaker 2: complicated figure psychology because.
- 52:16Speaker 1: I got and I won't say from who, because I've
- 52:18Speaker 1: already forgotten that to how insignificant you are. When I
- 52:21Speaker 1: was literally grieving Christy Ally's death because I was sad
- 52:26Speaker 1: I was and someone was like, really, what about scientology
- 52:32Speaker 1: and all the ship she said on her show? And
- 52:34Speaker 1: I was like she was mentally like she was mentally also,
- 52:40Speaker 1: I still want I can do the entire movie of
- 52:44Speaker 1: Drop Dead gorgeous, like I can do the from start
- 52:47Speaker 1: to finish, But my dream role is to do that
- 52:50Speaker 1: monologue in front of the exploded Swan float.
- 52:54Speaker 2: That was my dream, literally my apart from Maryku the
- 53:00Speaker 2: movies for Richer for Poor, where she has tend to
- 53:03Speaker 2: be honest with Tim Allen, one of my favorites, like
- 53:07Speaker 2: my sister and I we could watch it once on
- 53:09Speaker 2: the VHS, finish it, look at each other and say
- 53:12Speaker 2: let's watch it again, and just pop it right back.
- 53:14Speaker 1: In and and then chase it with and son in law.
- 53:17Speaker 1: You know what, bring back Polly Shore too. Well, if
- 53:20Speaker 1: we're getting Daddy Stevie Goody for sex appeal, bring back
- 53:25Speaker 1: Polly Shore for giggles.
- 53:27Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, okay, are you ready?
- 53:28Speaker 1: Yes?
- 53:29Speaker 2: I think Steve Guttenberg needs to be on season four.
- 53:35Speaker 1: O than just like that. Oh my god, that would
- 53:38Speaker 1: be a hilarious I thought you were gonna say Traders
- 53:41Speaker 1: was checked cast, But honestly, hey, Alan Cummings, we've been
- 53:46Speaker 1: doing great with the reality stars, but we are running
- 53:49Speaker 1: out of Big Brother people and Survivor people that people
- 53:52Speaker 1: give a shit about. So what is yeah, instead of
- 53:55Speaker 1: Survivor Gamers. You could still just bring back Boston Robins
- 54:00Speaker 1: till he wins. But what if we just bring back
- 54:05Speaker 1: like Daddy Stevie Utenberg and Pollie's sure? And I don't listen.
- 54:10Speaker 2: Has John Stamos been on The Traders?
- 54:12Speaker 1: No? No, no, John, Yes. Also, it would terrify me
- 54:21Speaker 1: and I'd really have to grip my teeth to watch it,
- 54:24Speaker 1: but I'd still watch it because I love traders. What's
- 54:27Speaker 1: Carrot Top doing? What is Carrot Top doing? He's so scary, so.
- 54:35Speaker 2: You're you're bringing up a memory. It was the Japan
- 54:38Speaker 2: Olympics in the late nineties and Carrot Top was on Letterman,
- 54:42Speaker 2: Oh my God, and they did a skit because they're well,
- 54:46Speaker 2: there's always like controversy with the figure skating and whatnot.
- 54:49Speaker 2: But there was again controversy with the figure skating and
- 54:52Speaker 2: the and the judges, and they did some bit where
- 54:56Speaker 2: Carrot Top like essentially seduced and slept with the judge
- 55:00Speaker 2: from Russia, and it had the two of them naked
- 55:04Speaker 2: undercovers with like holding up the judges scorecard. Scarred. I
- 55:09Speaker 2: was garred.
- 55:10Speaker 1: I was kind of top.
- 55:11Speaker 2: And there's like Carrot Top obviously not like hard coordinatority,
- 55:15Speaker 2: but still enough nudity for an eight year old to
- 55:16Speaker 2: be like, oh my gosh, I should not be seeing this.
- 55:18Speaker 1: And it was a like early version of Carrot Top
- 55:22Speaker 1: when he didn't like literally make fear chills run through
- 55:26Speaker 1: my body or ripped steroid Carrot Top because I can't
- 55:29Speaker 1: look at that one.
- 55:31Speaker 2: He looks he looks like a like a plastic veggie
- 55:37Speaker 2: tails now so scary. It's really scary. Yeah, but still
- 55:41Speaker 2: he should be on the Traders.
- 55:42Speaker 1: But he should be on the Traders, Alan Cummings, I
- 55:45Speaker 1: should work for the Traders, Like I think we could
- 55:49Speaker 1: revamp the Traders to include Thirsty. All you would have
- 55:54Speaker 1: to do is send me an Alan Cummings to nineties
- 55:58Speaker 1: Con and I'd get people to sign con tracks right
- 56:00Speaker 1: then and there, right then and there, shut up about
- 56:04Speaker 1: Alan comming.
- 56:05Speaker 2: Basically, like the whole cast, I think, besides Mary Kaya
- 56:08Speaker 2: and Nashley, I think the whole living cast of Full
- 56:10Speaker 2: House would want to go on the Traders. Just make
- 56:12Speaker 2: it like a whole Full House.
- 56:13Speaker 1: Traders, the Full House Traders. That would be so fun,
- 56:16Speaker 1: halving them and Traders half of them, Mark, like, that's
- 56:18Speaker 1: so fun. Come on, I'm trying to ruin my favorite
- 56:22Speaker 1: reality competition. But oh, oh my god, what were we
- 56:27Speaker 1: even talking? Oh so yeah, I I maybe you can
- 56:32Speaker 1: clear this up for me, because I don't watch Disney
- 56:36Speaker 1: Channel originals anymore, so I don't actually know if there's
- 56:38Speaker 1: still a thing. And I have a base knowledge of
- 56:42Speaker 1: cartoons that Nickelodeon is doing, and then I knew that
- 56:46Speaker 1: am a comedian that I have a lot of respect
- 56:49Speaker 1: for Jay. Something during the during the pandemic or whatever,
- 56:55Speaker 1: Nickelodeon gave him like a kids sketch show to do
- 56:59Speaker 1: or something. I don't remember. But I truly don't think
- 57:02Speaker 1: that there's enough older kids entertainment.
- 57:06Speaker 2: There really isn't.
- 57:07Speaker 1: And I was told it's because studios don't actually think
- 57:10Speaker 1: there's money in it, and I'm like, who do they think? Again,
- 57:14Speaker 1: if you may, if you made one movie theater weekend
- 57:20Speaker 1: a weekend, not on Tuesday. I go every Tuesday because
- 57:22Speaker 1: the popcorn is free and the tickets are five dollars.
- 57:24Speaker 1: But if once a month you knew that for a Friday,
- 57:27Speaker 1: Saturday Sunday combo, all of the movies were five dollars
- 57:32Speaker 1: and maybe the popcorns free. I don't know. Let's get
- 57:34Speaker 1: crazy and you actually created tween productions again. I truly
- 57:42Speaker 1: believe that we could bring back movie theaters. I don't
- 57:44Speaker 1: think that anyone's interested in bringing back movie theaters, but.
- 57:47Speaker 2: Me, I'm with you. I will. Let's start a tween tweet.
- 57:54Speaker 2: I don't know what it's called. I know I'm publishing.
- 57:56Speaker 2: It's a vertical, but like, we need like a tween
- 57:59Speaker 2: arcous and we just make movies for tweens.
- 58:02Speaker 1: Yeah, because I think about when people ask me, what
- 58:06Speaker 1: are the movies that changed you from the inside out?
- 58:09Speaker 1: I always think about the movies that were appropriate for me.
- 58:14Speaker 1: But my mom was also going to get down with them,
- 58:17Speaker 1: so like Now and then a Banger, Practical Magic. Maybe
- 58:23Speaker 1: I should have been wat for Gotte.
- 58:25Speaker 2: I don't know, Yeahtical Magic, Yeah, Hope Floats.
- 58:29Speaker 1: Hope Floats, the edited version of Dirty Dancing that they
- 58:33Speaker 1: would put on we TV, now the full blown dirty Dancing,
- 58:38Speaker 1: the edited for TV version of Dirty Dancing Mermaids. Although
- 58:43Speaker 1: I did text my mom while I was watching Mermaids
- 58:45Speaker 1: for our spin off show Still Comfy, and I was like,
- 58:48Speaker 1: you let me, at twelve years old watch this movie
- 58:53Speaker 1: where when Noona Ryder, who is maybe sixteen, has sex
- 58:59Speaker 1: with the twenty eight year old like Hermit bus driver
- 59:04Speaker 1: and he also kisses Chaer And she's like, that movie's
- 59:08Speaker 1: beautiful and it's about mother daughter relationships and that was
- 59:11Speaker 1: really important.
- 59:14Speaker 2: Did you know Amy Schumer owns the Mermaid's House?
- 59:17Speaker 1: What shut up?
- 59:18Speaker 2: She's selling it? But yeah, it's like eleven million dollars
- 59:22Speaker 2: or something.
- 59:23Speaker 1: I say, let's get to go fund me everybody, let's
- 59:27Speaker 1: get it. Let's all live at the Mermaid House. Oh
- 59:29Speaker 1: my god. Yeah, yeah, No, honestly, anyone can have the
- 59:34Speaker 1: Mermaid House. That's fine. I want the practical Magic House.
- 59:38Speaker 2: I want and Aid and Quinn. That's another daddy that
- 59:41Speaker 2: needs to resurgence.
- 59:44Speaker 1: Yes, so what so Honestly, like the heart of this
- 59:47Speaker 1: episode is start catering to tween girls again because they
- 59:52Speaker 1: are our future. Like, yeah, I don't know, I guess.
- 59:56Speaker 1: Thank God for this Google drive that TikTok set me
- 59:59Speaker 1: about the the Passport in Paris movie. Like, now I
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: can watch all of the movies for free or whatever,
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: because what are you gonna show your kid when they're
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: laid up from school or whatever.
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: Mm hmmm hmm, yeah, it's it's it was a challenge.
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: Yeah. Also, like the Disney original movies, a lot of
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: them still are on uh on Disney. Plus. I know
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: this because for COVID Thanksgiving when we weren't supposed to gather,
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: I watched The Color of Friendship.
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: Oh gosh, that's a great one. There's some z was
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: a Xenuir.
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: Xenon girl of the twenty first century, that's her name. Yeah,
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: with Raven Simone.
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: Because and the other thing that grind's my gears so
- 1:00:52Speaker 2: much now about like the stuff that's your towards children,
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: towards tweens is there's so much and I like and
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: everything that's geared towards you and I right now is
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: the same. It's blatant consumerism. Yes, bye bye bye, get this,
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: get this, you need the side shadow cay, you need
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: this flouse, blah blah blah. That I just would love
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: for there to be entertainment for kids that is gentle
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: to their synapses and their brains. And also isn't about
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: like you need to go by this. And while yes
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: there was definitely some consumerism tied to the Mary Kaya
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: n Ashley movies, I do think that there was like
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: a gentleness that you don't see now in between television
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: and movies.
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: Yeah. My sister repeatedly tells me all the time, my
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: freshmen students aren't watching that shitty the Foster show that
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: you're obsessed with on free Form. They're watching Shameless. And
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: I'm like, that's a grown up show, and she's like,
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: you're a grown up. You did actually probably change the Shameless. Why?
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: But I love free Form because it really does it's
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: like grown up Mary, Kate and Ashley Content were like, yeah,
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: sex and like friendship, breakups and things are happening, but
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: it's so easy on the brain. Yeah.
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: So it's like because I think reform is now what
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: what was ABC Family, which was kind of like after
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: you've graduated from Nickelodeon and Disney, this is what you
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: watch now. What I think is lacking is that in between,
- 1:02:23Speaker 2: because there is an in between, Like at the end
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: of the day, like, should an eleven year old be
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: watching Secret what was it called sex Lives? Is the
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: American Teenager?
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: The American Team? Like, no, you should be.
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: Watch but there need there needs to be an in between.
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: Yeah, here's the problem. ABC Family used to play The
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: Secret Life of the American Team directly after Seventh Heaven reruns,
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: So you're watching your good Christian propaganda show.
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: I'm really mad at Stephen Collins for ruining all that
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: for us that we can't watch Seventh Heaven reruns regularly.
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: And then it rolls right into now Remember you could
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: get knocked up as a teen and it's gonna be
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: funny but also awful.
- 1:03:09Speaker 2: The Sheery Applebee episode of Seventh Heaven where she joins
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: a gang and they they throw her mattress and find
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: all the knives and chains underneath her bed. Shook me
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: as a young tweet, I was so scared.
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: Yeah, because honestly, like I, I think that it is
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: honestly the right call for there to be movies like
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: Passport to Paris and Double Double Trouble and Holiday under
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: the Sun, probably in a New York minute is good.
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: I don't know if I ever saw that one, but
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: because sure, it presented me a false idea of what
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: girlhood actually was, that it was all just gonna be
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: like Lou outs.
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: And right Lou I was, and boyfriends.
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: And boyfriends and lip flaw.
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: Saving the world or were the one where they like
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: save the Model U N yes, yes, well what's that
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: one called?
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: Who knows at this point, But I I would rather
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: have girls get to hold on to the idea that
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: when they turn thirteen their life is going to be
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: a Mary Kate and Ashley movie, or when they turn
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: seventeen they're gonna like be treated nicely by boys on
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: a beach or whatever. Then have thirteen year old girls
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: watch Euphoria unsupervised and be like, oh my god, that's
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: what That's what ten dumb is gonna be and it's
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: like it doesn't have to be. Yeah, but that's all
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: the shows right now. It's all just like what if
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: we were all damaged and it's like, I get it,
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: we are, give me a little bubblegum pop.
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: Yeah. And I think that's why the Barbie movie did
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: so well too, because it it it was a bit
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: of like this fantasy land but also like just something
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: that we all wish for, Like let's wish for a
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: supportive world where we all just tell each other how
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: pretty we all are, and let's go see a movie
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: that I I took my daughter and I think she
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: was seven when it came out, and it was perfectly
- 1:05:18Speaker 2: if they're sure, there was a couple things, a couple
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: jokes that went over her head, but it was perfectly
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: fine for her to be sitting there watching it and
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: she loved it. And it's one of my favorite moments
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: together for us, our relationship is going to go to
- 1:05:31Speaker 2: see the Barbie movie together.
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: That there needs to be. There needs to be stuff
- 1:05:34Speaker 2: like that.
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: We we were on the cusp of having girlhood back
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: when Barbie was in movie theaters and the Eras Tour
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: was going on. And we're like, this is for the girls.
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: Life was for the girls again. And I feel like
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: media like the Mary Kate and Olsen films and Lizzie
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: McGuire and all of these, like they're not teen soap
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: opera's like One Tree Hill, even though it's my whole personality,
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: but they're also not I can't even name a little
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: kid show from our past. I don't know, Blues Clues,
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: they're not that. They're just like these shows about girls
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: cracking jokes and figuring out puberty and all of that.
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: It needs like it made girlhood feel like a phenomenon
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: that we got to go through, and I would love
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: for girlhood to feel like a phenomenon instead of a
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: trauma again.
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: Right because it is, you know, that's the thing, Like
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: I look back on girlhood and then now seeing it
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: through the eyes of my daughter, that it is. It's
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: so it is so beautiful. It is challenging, but it
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: is so beautiful that I just like, let's celebrate it
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: a little bit more and let's let's I don't know,
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: I just I love I love that idea. I think
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: let's let's celebrate it more.
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: Let girls make friendship bracelets, send them to summer Camp
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: where they find out that they have had a twin
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: sister all along. Like, you know, the Amanda show was revolutionary,
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: like a child woman, like a woman who was a child,
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: a girl child, I guess is what I'm saying, headlining
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: her own variety show, and then you have to figure
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: out twenty years later it's because they were abusing her
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: so much that they were like, stay on the network, kid,
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: here's a show. Like I feel like, if only I
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: could be in charge of how we present girlhood through
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: the media.
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, can we talk about the hold that
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: a young Dennis Quaid had on me as a young
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: young girl. And the first time I showed Parent Trap
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: to my daughter, I think she was six, and Dennis
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: Quake comes on the screen for the first time and
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: she looks and goes, is that daddy? I think that
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: it was my husband, who was absolutely nothing like that
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: is quite amazing. Again, just like these movies where it's
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: just everyone was and I don't know what it is,
- 1:08:08Speaker 2: but it's there was just such a joy in movies
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: of that little time capsule that we're discussing that I
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: feel like is nineteen ninety three to nineteen ninety nine,
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: that we need entertainment like that again.
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: Where every day was Summer Camp, it was literally every
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: day with Summer Camp. Like God, well, let's move into
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: the closing ceremony because we're basically right there. What is
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: a lesson that you learned from the Olsen media media
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: and their experiences with press and other cast members from
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: their former projects, and just their fame in general.
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: I think the biggest lesson I take away from it
- 1:08:52Speaker 2: is just its boundaries and looking to them as archetypes
- 1:08:58Speaker 2: for how you can be powerful. You can have money,
- 1:09:02Speaker 2: but you don't need to be thirsty, and I love
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: that and we haven't we never even really touched on it.
- 1:09:11Speaker 2: But my understanding is they're both still really involved with
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: the Row and it is like a cult following that
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: people just love their fashion line, which good for them.
- 1:09:21Speaker 2: I hope someday I can number one be skinny enough
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: to fit into their stuff but also be rich enough
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: to buy it. But I would love to be able
- 1:09:28Speaker 2: to support them and get their stuff, because like go go, go.
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: Go girls, Go girls.
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: But that is what I'm taking away from it, and
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: the other thing too, And I think these days people
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: are so quick to respond or they're quick to react
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: as opposed to responding. And what I have loved about
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: the Olsen Twins as they've grown up is they are
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: so selective in where they go, how they go, what
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: they're going to say that I do think to me
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: they are probably living their best lives being free of
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: TikTok and Instagram and tmz and all of that that
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: I think like, that's who people should look up to. Like,
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: if you want to be in the entertainment business, I
- 1:10:16Speaker 2: think that should be the dream that should be figuring
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: out of, Like, Okay, how can I do this? How
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: can I make my money? How can I get that
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: seed so that way then I could build something, scale
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: it exit and be able to live my best life.
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: Because let me tell you, I'm a person who is
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: just starting to scratch at their maybe I'll make TV
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: one day dream, and I'm already tired about how their
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: estate people are. I'm already tired. So everyone be an
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: Ulsen twin.
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I think the world would be a
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: better place.
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: Yeah. What is something that you would like to manifest
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: for the general collective energy or the Ulsen Twins themselves?
- 1:11:01Speaker 2: What I would like to manifest. I would love to
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: manifest a sit down tell all with me, maybe like
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: Greta Gerwig interviewing the Ulsen twins and just asking them
- 1:11:18Speaker 2: about fame and asking them about celebrity and how they
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: are treated and how they've been treated, and just learning
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: because my as I'm getting older, I'm realizing how how
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: just terrible the media can be. And then you see
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: like the pictures, I think, what was it. It was like
- 1:11:38Speaker 2: Bridget Fonda, who's just going to the grocery store and
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: people like, oh, look at her and blah blah blah.
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: It's like, no, just leave, like leave her alone. Like
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: I think that's the That's another thing I want to manifest,
- 1:11:48Speaker 2: is like let's just leave everybody. Let's let's leave each
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: other alone. You know, let's go to the grocery store.
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: We don't need to make a comment about it. Let's
- 1:11:55Speaker 2: we don't need to be mean, Like let's just be.
- 1:11:57Speaker 2: Let's like channel that kindness and excitement we all had
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: when we were like nine to eleven years old, and
- 1:12:04Speaker 2: let's like bring that forward. Let's like be a whole
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: bunch of forty year olds and braid each other's hair
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: and be positive and like just be that like model
- 1:12:14Speaker 2: for other people to see.
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: Yeah, no, I I think that I have spent the
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: last several years, specifically in the summertime, trying to be
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: all like if I was just in the middle of girlhood,
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: what would I be doing right now?
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: And it's time cool. My sister and I did a
- 1:12:33Speaker 2: tidy summer. It was so fun.
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: Yes, And it's making friendship bracelets for gen Con because
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: I'm gonna want to talk to people anyways, so they
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: might as well get a trinket. And it's you know,
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: my nephews are still in the infant and toddler stage,
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: but like, I so look forward to the time where
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: it's like messy finger painting and like eating playto and
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: all of that bullshit too, Like let's make childhood fun again.
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: It just it looks so sterile and not fun. And
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: again it's like six year olds doing beauty tutorials on
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: their parents' phone and I'm like, I'm tired.
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: You could probably you need to probably do like a
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: whole episode on like the beij mom asthetic thing, because
- 1:13:18Speaker 2: that like talk about like sucking the joy out anything.
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: Yeah. So yeah, like the nineties sucked for a million
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: ways in a million ways, but there was something like
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: so pure about getting to be a kid in the
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: nineties because you didn't realize that.
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: It sucked, right, Yeah.
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: And I feel like kids are so aware now that
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: things suck, which is great. They're all going to turn
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: into like twenty somethings who are activists or whatever. But
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: I don't want a six year old to realize that, like,
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: things suck.
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: Right, Yeah. I think that's that's very wise.
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: Yeah, Margaret, thank you so much for bringing this topic
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: to the show. This was such a fun walk down
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: memory lane.
- 1:13:58Speaker 2: This was really fun. If it's a lot many memories.
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: Tell everyone where they can find smash hit and on it.
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: What do you call your pans? Is it smashers? You
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: know what? I don't.
- 1:14:11Speaker 2: I don't have one yet. I don't have a name yet.
- 1:14:13Speaker 2: I need to think about it.
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: I love naming people's.
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: I believe Chris Rosa. Chris Rosa had suggested the smash heads. Yes,
- 1:14:23Speaker 2: so Smash Hit started as like an ode to the
- 1:14:27Speaker 2: short lived TV musical drama Smash when it was streaming
- 1:14:30Speaker 2: again on Peacock. Innocents evolved to me getting to talk
- 1:14:34Speaker 2: with my friends and podcasters I'd like to talk to
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: about what's hitting for me on the TV screen. And
- 1:14:39Speaker 2: that can be anything from Secret lives of Mormon wives
- 1:14:41Speaker 2: and just like that, Dallas Cowboys, cheerleaders, anything that is
- 1:14:45Speaker 2: on television right now that I'm just devouring and want
- 1:14:48Speaker 2: to talk about. That's where you That's what you can
- 1:14:50Speaker 2: find on Smash hit. I am also on Instagram at
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: smash hit Pop.
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: Yeah, did you and Chris do in just like that recently?
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: Is that my memory playing a trip we have.
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: Not done just like that? We did Poop Cruise. I
- 1:15:05Speaker 2: inspired by you actually when you came on to talk
- 1:15:07Speaker 2: about sirens. But I rewrote a scene because and this
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: is like mid Atlantic War. But so Aiden lives in Norfolk,
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: which has a Carnival cruise ship that people often mistake
- 1:15:20Speaker 2: as the refurbished poop Cruise. So I wrote a script
- 1:15:24Speaker 2: for Chris and I to act out of course with
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: Carrie Bradshaw and I was Aiden, where we envision Aiden
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: asking Carrie on the poop Cruise and how Carrie handles that.
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: I well, Number one, Chris, if you're listening, you're never
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: texting me enough about angels like that. I would love
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: to do a deep dive on how they've ruined Carrie
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: specifically they've ruined everything, but Carrie literally has no self
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: respect anymore, and I can't stand it.
- 1:15:49Speaker 2: Well, Okay, I had this thought while I was driving today,
- 1:15:55Speaker 2: and I because you saw the most recent episodes with
- 1:15:57Speaker 2: the Kathy reveal. Okay, so people are like screaming about that.
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: But I'm gonna I'm gonna probably you're gonna hate me now.
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: But I'm kind of wondering, like, has Carrie grown Has
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: she grown up? Because like old Carrie would have like
- 1:16:12Speaker 2: burned big house down for sleeping with someone else. But
- 1:16:17Speaker 2: is it possible maybe she has like kind of realized
- 1:16:19Speaker 2: in her old age that you know what, Like Okay,
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: like that, I can see how that could happen.
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: No, I truly just don't think that her and Aidan
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: are in an actual relationship, and I don't like, I
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: don't think she likes him.
- 1:16:32Speaker 2: And that is exactly like essentially with my Smash Scripts Exploration.
- 1:16:36Speaker 2: Aiden is a carnival cruise line kind of a person,
- 1:16:39Speaker 2: and she is not. She's if she's ever setting foot
- 1:16:41Speaker 2: on a cruise, she's going on the reds yet.
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: So I was one of the people yelling at my
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: TV because I was like, then, just call it Carrie
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: he's sleeping with the ex. You don't even care. This
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: is when we call it.
- 1:16:54Speaker 2: I can't tell if it was just latent product placement,
- 1:16:58Speaker 2: but the over use of Tom's I'm wondering if you
- 1:17:02Speaker 2: like setting yourselves up for like a very dramatic like
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: bleeding ulcer episode.
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: Yeah, because I number one, I'm gonna finish this recording
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: before I do a whole new episode on and just
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: like that. But to make sure to follow smash Hit

- 1:17:53Speaker 1: her thirties looking at all of the tween girls and
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: going where did your movies go? Why Holly would why
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: smiles are for joy I'll write between movies. I don't know.
