- 0:00You ever had one of those nights where you're lying there, it's
- 0:03pitch black, it's dead quiet, and your brain suddenly decides
- 0:07now is the perfect time to talk about everything that's ever
- 0:10gone wrong in your entire life? Yeah, well, that's me.
- 0:14And it's pretty much every night around 3:00 AM, You know, your
- 0:17body's begging for sleep, but your brains like, hey, remember
- 0:22that awkward thing you said three years ago?
- 0:24Let's replay that in high def. Well, welcome to the 3:00 AM
- 0:27club. And trust me, it's not the kind
- 0:29of club with music and dancing. It's more like your brain runs
- 0:33the place, the lights never go out, and the only thing on the
- 0:36menu is overthinking with a sign of regret.
- 0:39Now, if that sounds familiar, stay with me because we're about
- 0:43to laugh about it. We're about to learn why it
- 0:46happens. And I promise by the end, you'll
- 0:48see that you're not the only one who's wide awake at that time.
- 0:53Welcome to Living with Parkinson's, The Good, the Bad,
- 0:57and the Reality. Real talk, real life, real
- 1:01community with Bryce Perry. Let's begin.
- 1:06Hey, it's Bryce, thanks for being here.
- 1:08This is living with Parkinson's, the good, the bad and the
- 1:10reality. It's where we talk about
- 1:12everything from symptoms to Silver Linings, with plenty of
- 1:16humor in between. And if you like real talk and
- 1:19honest stories and a few laughs about life with Parkinson's and
- 1:22hit that subscribe button right now.
- 1:24That way you'll never miss another episode.
- 1:27OK, today's topic, the 3:00 AM club.
- 1:29That's special time when Parkinson's stress and
- 1:32imagination team up to make sure that you'll never, ever need an
- 1:35alarm clock again. And you know the feeling when
- 1:38your brains digging through old thoughts at 3:00 AM like a like
- 1:42a raccoon in a garbage can? Yeah, that pretty much.
- 1:45That's pretty much me. Most nice and just just a little
- 1:48less fur and a lot more frustration.
- 1:51So let's talk about why it happens and what might actually
- 1:53be going on in our brains and what helps me keep my sanity
- 1:58when it does. OK, now picture this.
- 2:00I'm finally asleep. I may be dreaming about fishing
- 2:03or baking or maybe Carmen. You know that my eyes are wide
- 2:07open 3:00 in the morning. No sound, no reason, just ping
- 2:13my brains awake. And right on cue, the announcer
- 2:16in my head goes. Good evening ladies and
- 2:19gentlemen, and welcome to another episode of Overthinking
- 2:22Live. You know tonight's guest.
- 2:25Did you take your meds? Right?
- 2:26And why does your left knee hurt now when it didn't hurt
- 2:29yesterday? Followed by our musical guests,
- 2:32Restless Leg Rhythm and the Cramps.
- 2:36And stay tuned for tomorrow night's rerun.
- 2:38Did you say something weird to your doctor last visit?
- 2:41You know, I swear my brain has better programming than Netflix.
- 2:44And, you know, no commercials. I guess Netflix doesn't have
- 2:49commercials either. Anyway, now we can laugh about
- 2:53it. But here's the things.
- 2:54Here's where things get interesting.
- 2:56It turns out there's a real reason that this keeps
- 2:58happening. And, you know, once I understood
- 3:01it, it made those nights a lot less scary.
- 3:05Now, here's what I want you to think of it.
- 3:07Think of your brain like a nightclub.
- 3:11During the day. It's bright, loud, people
- 3:13everywhere, thoughts, movement, emotion.
- 3:15Everything's bumping along. At night, dopamine is supposed
- 3:19to step in, like the DJ who slowly fades the light, slows
- 3:23the beat and shuts down the place just so you can drift off.
- 3:27But with Parkinson's, that DJ is unreliable.
- 3:30You know, some nights he leaves early and he keeps the beat
- 3:33pounding, right? It just pounds and pounds.
- 3:37And other nights he shows up late, hits the wrong button, and
- 3:40he loops the same song until sunrise.
- 3:43And when the rhythm gets messed up, the whole club, meaning your
- 3:46brain stays lit up And in late medication, you know, adding
- 3:51some late medication, a little stress or caffeine, and suddenly
- 3:54it's 3:00 AM and you're the only one in the club left dancing.
- 4:00You know, knowing that sort of changed everything for me
- 4:02because you can't argue with chemistry, but you can learn to
- 4:06work with it. For me, the first step was to
- 4:08stop fighting it. I used to get angry.
- 4:11I'd roll around. I'd check the clock.
- 4:13I'd count the hours of sleep that I was losing.
- 4:16You know, now when I wake up, I just accept it.
- 4:18I stretch, I take a sip of water, and I tell myself, all
- 4:21right, 3:00 AM. You win tonight.
- 4:24You know, that tiny bit of acceptance takes the pressure
- 4:27off of it. And weirdly enough, half the
- 4:29time I fall back asleep before I even realize it.
- 4:33You know, a lot of us, and you probably have done this before
- 4:37you're going to you start worrying like, Oh my gosh, if I
- 4:39don't sleep tonight, I'm going to be so tired tomorrow, right?
- 4:42And that just starts that cycle again.
- 4:45Oh, how am I going to do this? And how am I going to do that?
- 4:47And how is it, you know, without any sleep?
- 4:50Once you get in that vicious cycle, you're never going
- 4:53anywhere. Trust me.
- 4:55You know, And those are the nights that I call like my brain
- 4:57just won't stop talking to me back.
- 5:00And on those nights, I accept it, You know what?
- 5:02I'll reach over, I'll grab my phone, maybe not to scroll, but
- 5:05to talk, to talk into it. I hit record, and I just spill
- 5:10whatever is bouncing around in my head.
- 5:12Call the pharmacy, You know, film tomorrow's episode.
- 5:16Why is cold pizza better than hot pizza?
- 5:19Like, just random, But that's what's in my head at 3:00 AM.
- 5:23Sometimes it's deep, sometimes it's ridiculous, but it gets the
- 5:26thoughts out so my brain stops juggling them by morning.
- 5:30Most of us, most of it makes no sense, but it works.
- 5:34It's actually makes for some really crazy morning coffee
- 5:37discussions with your partner or with yourself to say, this is
- 5:41what I was thinking about last night, right.
- 5:43It's like cleaning the browser, clearing the browser tabs in
- 5:46your head. Just get it out, write it down.
- 5:49If you're not talking the phone person, write it down.
- 5:51But just say them out loud, write them down, speak them out
- 5:55loud. It'll make them go away.
- 5:57And hey, I'd love to hear what works for you.
- 6:00If you got any tips or any tricks or any nighttime hacks
- 6:03that would help, that helps calm your brain, then drop them in
- 6:06the comments because I'm always looking for new ideas and
- 6:08everybody, trust me, people read the comments and it might, you
- 6:11never know who you might help. OK, this brings us up to
- 6:14Carmen's care partner Corner. Now I asked her what those
- 6:17nights are like from her side of the bed, and she gave me
- 6:20something really good to share with all the care partners out
- 6:23there. Here's what she'd say.
- 6:26When Bryce wakes up, I can tell immediately the cover shift,
- 6:29then that long sigh. You know the one.
- 6:32But you know, at first I'd lie there hoping he'd settle, but
- 6:35eventually I realized I can't control his Parkinson's, but I
- 6:39can control my response. So my care partner tip is this.
- 6:44Build a little empathy routine. When your partner wakes, check
- 6:48in softly. Are you OK?
- 6:50Sometimes I hand him his phone so he can record what's on his
- 6:53mind, and sometimes I just breathe slow so he matches my
- 6:56breath. We.
- 6:57And we laugh because if we don't, we'll both cry from the
- 7:00exhaustion. And what I wish someone had told
- 7:03me early on is that the 3:00 AM club isn't just for people with
- 7:06Parkinson's. It's for us, too.
- 7:09We're awake, we're thinking, and sometimes we just need to know
- 7:13that someone else gets it. She's right, you know.
- 7:18And for the record, she's officially the VP of Night
- 7:21Operations around this house. And if you're watching this and
- 7:24you're part of the 3:00 AM club too, let me know in the
- 7:27comments. Just write hashtag 3:00 AM club
- 7:30so we know that you're part of the night crew and you've been
- 7:34there and been there and done it.
- 7:36You'd be amazed at how many of us are awake at the same time
- 7:39doing the exact same thing. And isn't that exciting?
- 7:42Isn't that interesting? We sometimes lie there thinking,
- 7:45why me? Why am I lying here?
- 7:47Everybody, the world's asleep and I'm staring at my ceiling
- 7:50fan. Could you imagine?
- 7:52When you start thinking about it all millions of people with
- 7:54Parkinson's around the world are all up staring at the ceiling
- 7:57fan. You know, crazy.
- 7:59And you know what? For Carmen and I, humor helps us
- 8:02more than melatonin ever could. Because when you can laugh about
- 8:06it, it loses its power. And when it loses its power, you
- 8:10get a little bit of peace back. And here's one more thing that
- 8:13helps me. Deliberate breathing, right?
- 8:17Talked about in a couple episodes ago.
- 8:18You know, inhale for four, exhale for six.
- 8:21Picture each breath dimming, one more light in the mental
- 8:24nightclub until it finally closes.
- 8:28And instead of saying, I can't sleep, I do this.
- 8:30Tell yourself I'm resting. It's a tiny mindset shift, but
- 8:34it changes the entire experience.
- 8:37Your body listens, your jaw relaxes, your shoulders drop.
- 8:41And sometimes, if you're lucky, you'll just drift off without
- 8:45even realizing it. And really, if you don't, that's
- 8:48OK too. You're still giving your body
- 8:50what it needs. Calm, not chaos.
- 8:53And that's progress. OK, before we wrap up, let me
- 8:57say this. If you ever find yourself awake
- 9:00again, whether it's tonight or another night at 3:00 AM, no,
- 9:04you're not alone. You know, we even started a
- 9:06three M3M channel group inside three M group inside the inner
- 9:11circle. And it's a place for all those
- 9:12late night thoughts and the I Can't Sleep moments.
- 9:16People, you know, they can share stories, they can share jokes,
- 9:18survival tips, and you know what?
- 9:20There's always someone awake. It's comforting and honestly a
- 9:23little terrifying to know that you're never the only one
- 9:27staring at the ceiling. The links in the description
- 9:29below if you want to join us. Pajamas are welcome.
- 9:32Free trials on no harm, no harm, no fowl.
- 9:35Come on in, check it out. All right, time for the Brycism
- 9:39of the episode. And if you're ready, I think
- 9:41it's a good one. So get ready, Here it is.
- 9:45Parkinson's and sleep have trust issues.
- 9:48Some nights. I make it work for a while, and
- 9:51then, right when I start to believe in us again, sleep
- 9:54ghosts me. Now, if that sounds familiar,
- 9:59you're in good company. So the next time you're lying
- 10:02there at 3:00 AM, remember this. You're not alone.
- 10:05And it's OK to laugh about it. Because even when Parkinson's
- 10:09won't let you rest, you can still rest in the fact that
- 10:12we're all in this together. Now, if this episode gave you a
- 10:17laugh or helped you in any way or helped you breathe, maybe hit
