- 0:25Join me, click follow, like and subscribe and let's see where
- 0:29this leads. I often wonder what makes people
- 0:35change. Like fundamentally what makes
- 0:40them all of a sudden shift shifts their point of view, the
- 0:46way they act, the way they relate to others.
- 0:51But I guess I don't have to look too far for an example or a case
- 0:56study. That would be me.
- 1:00I have strayed so far from who I used to be.
- 1:04But then I thought maybe I didn't stray far from who I used
- 1:07to be. Maybe who I used to be was
- 1:10made-up of what other people wanted me to be or what other
- 1:14people told me to be. And I think that makes sense.
- 1:18Not just sense for me, but just sense for everyone.
- 1:22I think it's safe to say that we're made-up of have we were
- 1:25raised what we were told, told to believe in, told to care
- 1:31about what our society thought was normal and acceptable and
- 1:37what society expected of us, I guess what our friends were
- 1:40into, what our generation was into, the movies we saw, the
- 1:46books we read, the magazines we consumed.
- 1:50Yeah. So if you think of it that way,
- 1:53we're pretty much a Stew as to of all these different ideas and
- 1:57perspectives and philosophies. But at some point we have to
- 2:03decide what we hold true, who we are, where we fit in.
- 2:10In the case of me, I didn't wake up one day and say it's time to
- 2:14change. I don't think I ever really
- 2:17thought about myself in general. I think life was just happening
- 2:21for me and all around me and I was just asked to wake up day in
- 2:29day out, day in, day out, do the same, just the days would
- 2:33change. Until one day I decided that I
- 2:37didn't want the days to just change.
- 2:39I wanted to change too. For me, this change in me came
- 2:46with a job change. I had been doing the same job
- 2:49for so long and everything was just set.
- 2:56My life was set. My life was on cruise control.
- 3:01And then I switched jobs and everything was different.
- 3:05Not just the environment or the people, but how I was seen
- 3:10around these people, how I was perceived.
- 3:14And little by little I started to take notice.
- 3:19Notice of somebody that I rarely took notice of, and that would
- 3:23be me. I think for a lot of people, we
- 3:28forget about ourselves. I know for a lot of my friends
- 3:32who became moms like I did, there was a good chunk of time
- 3:37where we forgot about ourselves. Forgot about our appearance, our
- 3:42wardrobe, our friends, our hobbies, our health, our
- 3:48fitness. It's like we sidelined ourselves
- 3:52for, well for some of us it was a few years and for others try
- 3:5910 years. That might be the span when they
- 4:02were having kids and raising the little ones to be somewhat
- 4:06self-sufficient and go to school.
- 4:09That applied to me. I would say until I got to this
- 4:13job and people were looking at me differently, I was being
- 4:18experienced differently and that made me take notice, notice of
- 4:24myself. I started caring about things,
- 4:28caring about taking care of myself.
- 4:32But the real change started to happen when I decided to address
- 4:36my back problems. I guess my back problems were
- 4:40brought on by my front problems being my chest.
- 4:46I've always carried a heavy load in the front, probably since the
- 4:50time I was 12. Now add decades on things just
- 4:57being the same and you either accept it for what is
- 5:03uncomfortable, even unbearable at times, or you get
- 5:10uncomfortable enough that you need to change.
- 5:12And that's where I found myself for so long.
- 5:15I used to Daydream about the idea of getting a reduction, but
- 5:19then the thought of surgery would wake me up and that idea
- 5:22didn't sound so fun anymore. I had never really explored
- 5:27other options until I talked to somebody and she said, why don't
- 5:30you see a trainer? Maybe you just need to
- 5:32strengthen your back. So I saw a trainer and the
- 5:37trainer said, yeah, I can help you, but first you have to
- 5:41commit to showing up at least three times a week.
- 5:45Lucky for me, the job I was at had a gym inside so I could
- 5:51sneak away during lunch break and go see my trainer.
- 5:55And that also meant that I didn't have to take time away
- 5:56from my kids because the guilt of that probably would have
- 6:00prevented me from fixing my back.
- 6:03I probably just would have stayed being uncomfortable.
- 6:07So next thing you know, there I am showing up.
- 6:12But what I realized was I wasn't showing up for other people.
- 6:15I was showing up for myself. This was unique.
- 6:20I had never given myself the opportunity to show up for
- 6:23myself. I was always showing up for
- 6:26clients or school or my kids or my ex.
- 6:32I think that this is similar for a lot of people.
- 6:35We put other things in front of ourselves, in front of taking
- 6:39care of ourselves. For some it's school work, for
- 6:44others it's deadlines at work, and for others it's family.
- 6:49Family first. All that sounds like noble
- 6:52causes, but when you forget about yourself, then how does
- 6:59that factor into you living your life?
- 7:02That was kind of the place I was at, not just in the aspect of my
- 7:06back, but that question was starting to creep into all
- 7:09aspects of my life. My trainer told me, I'll fix
- 7:14your back. If you show up, you're
- 7:17committed, you work hard, and eventually you'll get stronger.
- 7:24And I would come to learn that the strength that I was building
- 7:27wasn't just physically, it was mentally too.
- 7:31When I saw that he was right and I saw the changes happening and
- 7:34I saw myself getting stronger both physically and mentally, I
- 7:38started thinking what else in life can change?
- 7:43What are things that I thought could never change that maybe
- 7:46could? Maybe I just needed to think
- 7:49about things differently. Maybe I just needed to factor me
- 7:54in. For a lot of people, they think
- 7:58their life is set. Where they live is set.
- 8:02What they do for a living is set.
- 8:04Who their friends are is set. How they navigate the world is
- 8:09set, but I'm not so sure. When I realized I was the type
- 8:14of person that could go to a gym, I was fascinated.
- 8:19And here I was going to see a trainer three times a week.
- 8:22Mind you, I was very weak when I started, but I got stronger and
- 8:29stronger still just by showing up to these training sessions.
- 8:34I saw my back getting stronger and my posture changing.
- 8:39My shoulders were no longer rounding in.
- 8:42I no longer had to think about a future where I'd be hunched
- 8:46over. I was now standing up straight
- 8:50and I was moving through the world differently.
- 8:53And it made me think what else could change?
- 8:57What other things did I think could never be different?
- 9:01And maybe they could. That's what it came down to,
- 9:05asking questions, exploring options, seeing what's possible,
- 9:13and trying things. When I wasn't working at the
- 9:16company anymore, I quickly joined the gym across the
- 9:19street. I figured its proximity was
- 9:22going to keep me accountable. Just leaving my house would
- 9:26remind me of the gym because I'd see it and it would be there and
- 9:32it'd be a reminder that I wasn't.
- 9:35So when I did go to the gym, I tried replicating the circuit
- 9:38that my trainer had taught me. And after a while, I started to
- 9:43lose motivation. So I realized I have to stay
- 9:47committed. If I'm not motivated that way,
- 9:50what about classes? And I started taking classes,
- 9:54and I found myself getting stronger still.
- 9:57Then I opened up my life to all sorts of different things.
- 10:01Things that would push me, push me to see who I really was.
- 10:07I guess they'd push me to change or test the theory that I was
- 10:12who I was. The end.
- 10:15So I took different classes, dance class.
- 10:20At first it was all ego, but you can't really follow choreography
- 10:27if you're thinking about how you look.
- 10:30You have to just move. After I stopped looking at
- 10:33myself and I just started following the choreography, I
- 10:37realized, yeah, I'm not very good at it, and that's OK.
- 10:42I don't have to be great at everything.
- 10:44Who is great at everything? We put so much pressure on
- 10:47ourselves to be good or great or perfect right out the gate.
- 10:52It's just not realistic. I could accept that choreography
- 10:57wasn't my thing, but what I learned more than anything was
- 11:01that it was OK getting uncomfortable.
- 11:04That was interesting because I didn't think I'd be the girl
- 11:08that could accept being uncomfortable.
- 11:11So then I decided to get more uncomfortable and I went to
- 11:13improv class. There I was, signing up to stand
- 11:17in front of strangers, some of whom are actors, and get
- 11:22scenarios thrown at me, and I had to react in real time.
- 11:28At first, there was no time for the ego.
- 11:32I just had to go. I had to respond.
- 11:34But then I saw my ego creep in and I realized that's not what
- 11:40improv is about. But I was proud of myself for
- 11:43trying. I tried it several times.
- 11:47I was proud because I never thought that I would have been
- 11:50the person that would volunteer for that class.
- 11:53And there I was, changing, even changing what I would try when I
- 12:00started dating. Well, that was all sorts of
- 12:03changing. Nothing about that was normal.
- 12:07I mean, dating wasn't even like this when I was young.
- 12:11There was no online dating. But accepting what is was fun.
- 12:17It was entertaining too. I didn't take it so seriously.
- 12:24I mean aspects of it, yes, I did like how did I look, How did I
- 12:30sound? And then eventually I stopped
- 12:33caring about that too. I knew how I looked and I knew
- 12:38if I didn't sound right for somebody, that's OK.
- 12:42That was new for me too. Acceptance.
- 12:45It was such a different way to be than the old judge mental
- 12:49self I used to be. I mean I still do judge but now
- 12:55I gear it towards my work because it benefits me in my
- 12:59job. I also wanted peace in my life.
- 13:03Whereas before drama drama drama used to fuel my day, now not so
- 13:09much. Which meant reevaluating my
- 13:13social circle. Little by little I would take
- 13:20notice. Notice of things that I never
- 13:23really looked at or thought to care about.
- 13:26Like is a friendship reciprocal or one sided?
- 13:32Is it benefiting me or just passing the time?
- 13:36That was another thing, Distractions.
- 13:40Oh my goodness, I think so many people love distractions.
- 13:44They love doom scrolling. They love chatting on the phone
- 13:46for countless hours. I never got into doom scrolling,
- 13:51but I was guilty, guilty, guilty of chatting on the phone just to
- 13:57pass time. And that changed too.
- 14:02I don't know, it's like one day the lights just turned on.
- 14:06Maybe not all at once, one at a time.
- 14:11Maybe it started with my back and then it moved on.
- 14:15Because what I realized is nothing has to be set in stone.
- 14:19Nothing has to be fixed. Your personality, your choices,
- 14:25they all can change. The way you show up today can be
- 14:30different tomorrow. You just need to be motivated to
- 14:35want to change, to want to explore, to want to leave things
- 14:40behind and then show up. Take small steps in that
- 14:45direction. Maybe it's in the direction of
- 14:48the new goal, or away from what doesn't serve you anymore.
- 14:52And if you need a reason to do it, permission, then I would
- 14:57venture to guess that somewhere along the line you sidelined
- 15:01yourself because you are the reason.
- 15:06So if you wanted to change something and you were ready to
- 15:09commit to it, what would it be and what would the first step
- 15:13be? Thanks for listening.
