- 1:17off.
- 1:18Welcome, everyone, to the ever-popular Inspirations for
- 1:20Your Life show.
- 1:21Don't forget, if you're thirsty, if you're hungry,
- 1:23feel free to go grab something.
- 1:24I have a delicious, very hot cup of
- 1:26decaf tea.
- 1:30That is really delicious.
- 1:32Ladies and gentlemen, I'm John C.
- 1:34Morley.
- 1:34I'm a serial entrepreneur.
- 1:35I'm an engineer, marketing specialist, video producer, podcast
- 1:38host, coach, keynote speaker, a graduate student at
- 1:43Montclair State University, and it is so grateful
- 1:46to be here with you guys now being
- 1:48a published author.
- 1:50You know, friends, have you ever dealt with
- 1:52someone who seems to get under your skin?
- 1:55Maybe it's one comment, one accusation, one text,
- 1:59or even a certain tone of their voice.
- 2:01Before you realize what's happening, you're reacting exactly
- 2:05the way they expected.
- 2:08Today, I'm changing that.
- 2:11You may not control what somebody else does,
- 2:14but your reaction still belongs to you.
- 2:18Let's get into our 30 points, shall we?
- 2:20Number one, your reaction is still yours.
- 2:23Yeah, the reaction is still yours.
- 2:25So someone may provoke you intentionally, but the
- 2:30response is still yours.
- 2:35I think that's a very important thing for
- 2:37us to understand.
- 2:38And that doesn't excuse their behavior.
- 2:42It reminds you where your power really lies.
- 2:46You may not control the trigger, but you
- 2:48can learn to control what follows it.
- 2:52Number two, stop handing people the remote control
- 2:55to your emotions.
- 2:58If somebody can press one emotional button and
- 3:01instantly change your behavior, you've given them tremendous
- 3:05influence over you.
- 3:07Take the remote back immediately.
- 3:09Their words don't need to determine your entire
- 3:12emotional state.
- 3:14Number three, pause.
- 3:17Before giving somebody the response they expect, a
- 3:22pause can change everything.
- 3:24When somebody expects immediate anger, don't automatically deliver
- 3:27it.
- 3:28Give yourself a few seconds to decide whether
- 3:31the response forming in your mind is actually
- 3:34the response you want to give.
- 3:37Number four, not everything deserves an immediate reaction.
- 3:43Urgency is often emotional rather than real.
- 3:50A text can wait.
- 3:52An email can wait.
- 3:53Even a conversation can sometimes wait.
- 3:58Immediate responses, guys, are not always better responses.
- 4:05Number five, silence can be a decision.
- 4:08Silence doesn't automatically mean weakness, fear, or agreement.
- 4:12Sometimes silence means you've consciously decided that a
- 4:16conversation doesn't deserve more of your present energy.
- 4:22Number six, stop matching somebody else's chaos.
- 4:27If someone becomes loud, insulting, or unreasonable, you
- 4:32don't have to join them there.
- 4:35Their chaos doesn't require your participation.
- 4:39Stay grounded in the person you want to
- 4:42be.
- 4:45Their volume doesn't determine yours.
- 4:48Number seven, someone getting louder doesn't make them
- 4:51more correct, and it doesn't require you to
- 4:55get louder to maintain control over your own
- 4:58tone.
- 4:59Instead of allowing theirs to set it for
- 5:01you.
- 5:03Number eight, choose your response before emotion chooses
- 5:08it for you.
- 5:12Interesting to ponder that thought for a moment.
- 5:15Strong emotions can make decisions very, very quickly.
- 5:19Give yourself enough time for judgment to catch
- 5:21up.
- 5:22Ask what response will actually help instead of
- 5:24simply satisfying the emotion of the current moment.
- 5:29Number nine, you don't have to attend every
- 5:32argument.
- 5:33Not every invitation deserves acceptance, including invitations to
- 5:38fight.
- 5:39Sometimes the smartest response to an unnecessary argument
- 5:43is simply refusing to participate.
- 5:48Number 10, stop defending yourself to people committed
- 5:53to misunderstanding you.
- 5:55It's like their whole life is to just
- 5:56misunderstand you and others.
- 5:58There are times when more explanation won't create
- 6:01more understanding.
- 6:02If somebody has already decided what they want
- 6:05to believe, endless defending yourself may only drain
- 6:09you.
- 6:12Number 11, your energy doesn't need to answer
- 6:14every accusation.
- 6:16Don't feel like you're on trial because you're
- 6:18not.
- 6:19An accusation doesn't automatically create an obligation to
- 6:22respond.
- 6:25Decide whether your answer will clarify something meaningful
- 6:28or merely extend a conflict that isn't going
- 6:31anywhere.
- 6:33Or if it's going somewhere, it's just going
- 6:34in circles.
- 6:36I think sometimes words get people to think
- 6:41a certain way, but it may not be
- 6:43the right way.
- 6:44Do you know what I mean?
- 6:49Hopefully that makes sense to all of you.
- 6:54I think sometimes people are on their own
- 6:58path, right?
- 7:00They don't necessarily mean to get in your
- 7:02way, but they do because, well, they don't
- 7:08have an option.
- 7:10They say if it's not option A, well,
- 7:13then it has to be option A.
- 7:14Like I'll do whatever I have to get
- 7:15option A, but that might not be the
- 7:17smartest thing.
- 7:20Number 12, learn when explanation becomes wasted effort.
- 7:24There's an interesting caveat.
- 7:26Healthy communication requires people who are willing to
- 7:29listen.
- 7:30If you're explaining the same thing repeatedly to
- 7:33someone who refuses to hear it, recognize when
- 7:36your energy could be better used elsewhere.
- 7:40Yeah, I think that's one that a lot
- 7:43of people just don't, they don't understand or
- 7:44get.
- 7:46Number 13, stop allowing provocation to dictate behavior.
- 7:53Provocation is designed to produce a reaction.
- 7:57When you automatically react, the provocation worked.
- 8:01Interrupt that sequence and decide how you want
- 8:05to behave now in this current situation, okay?
- 8:08And I think this is a lot of
- 8:09things that happen is people learn how to
- 8:11push other people's buttons.
- 8:12They're like, oh yeah, I got the secret.
- 8:14But really, they might know how to control
- 8:16that person, but one thing they don't have
- 8:18is they don't have their trust and respect.
- 8:21Number 14, emotional control is a form of
- 8:25strength.
- 8:26Control doesn't mean suppressing every feeling.
- 8:29It means recognizing the feeling without allowing it
- 8:32to make every decision.
- 8:34You can be angry and still remain very
- 8:38deliberate.
- 8:42And I think sometimes when people try to
- 8:45act in a certain way, others try to
- 8:47put them down, and there's no need for
- 8:49that, okay?
- 8:52No need for that.
- 8:54And if that's the case, then that can
- 8:56change a lot of people.
- 9:03That's a very interesting thing to think about.
- 9:07Number 15, give yourself time before you respond.
- 9:11There's no race.
- 9:12Sometimes 10 minutes changes your perspective.
- 9:16Sometimes an hour does too.
- 9:19You don't have to respond while you're experiencing
- 9:22the strongest version of an emotion.
- 9:24And that's actually the worst time to respond
- 9:26because if you respond then, you're probably not
- 9:30gonna have things very soft.
- 9:32I think that can be a big problem
- 9:35for a lot of people.
- 9:38And I say that to you because most
- 9:40people just don't understand why things happen like
- 9:44this or why they're moving like this.
- 9:49And hopefully that means something to you about
- 9:53what's going on, about why people are acting
- 9:55the way they are, right?
- 10:00Maybe what you're asking yourself is, how do
- 10:03I become better without causing a big challenge?
- 10:10Sometimes it's just trying to understand where I
- 10:14need to go, what I need to do.
- 10:17You know, sometimes it's a feeling.
- 10:19And then when we get that feeling, we're
- 10:21like, oh, wait a minute.
- 10:22I can actually do something different now because
- 10:27I've been on that side of the counter
- 10:30before.
- 10:31Number 16, guys, don't send the message while
- 10:35you're furious.
- 10:36You see, you've probably written something while you're
- 10:38angry.
- 10:39And that looked very different later, didn't it?
- 10:42Whoa, what did I just write?
- 10:44Write it if you need to, but don't
- 10:46dare automatically send it.
- 10:48Give yourself enough time to decide whether those
- 10:50words represent you.
- 10:51And I bet you're gonna figure, it might've
- 10:54been a little too harsh in those words.
- 10:55Wow, good thing I actually didn't send that.
- 11:01That's a very important thing, guys.
- 11:04Very, very important thing.
- 11:08Make sure the words really represent you because
- 11:10if they don't, you're gonna have regret.
- 11:13And nobody wants regret, do they?
- 11:15I don't think so.
- 11:18Nobody wants regret.
- 11:23So number 17 is please step away before
- 11:26making permanent decisions.
- 11:28You've got time before you make decisions.
- 11:31You've got time before you cast the mold.
- 11:33You don't need to do it just because
- 11:34somebody says, oh, you better do this.
- 11:37That's usually the worst time to do it,
- 11:39just to be quite honest with you, right?
- 11:44So number 17 is step away before making
- 11:46permanent decisions.
- 11:48Temporary emotions can produce permanent consequences and some
- 11:52very serious regret that you're gonna not wanna
- 11:54look back at.
- 11:56Before ending something, sending something, quitting something, or
- 12:00making another major decision, create enough distance to
- 12:03think clearly about it before you, let's say,
- 12:08very harshly make that decision.
- 12:11Because later you're gonna be like, oh, wait
- 12:12a minute.
- 12:13I really didn't mean that decision, right?
- 12:16I didn't mean that decision.
- 12:19I didn't think about the consequences that were
- 12:22in that decision.
- 12:24Number 18, guys, please stop confusing reaction with
- 12:28action.
- 12:30Reaction happens automatically.
- 12:33Action is intentional.
- 12:36So let me give an example.
- 12:38You're at the stove and it's really hot
- 12:40and your hand's about to touch you like,
- 12:42whoa, I pulled away, right?
- 12:43That's a reaction.
- 12:45That's not an action.
- 12:47I intentionally moved my hand.
- 12:49That happened so I didn't burn myself, right?
- 12:52Whoa, right?
- 12:56Everything needs to be intentional.
- 12:58One is driven primarily by the moment, like
- 13:00the fact you might burn yourself, while the
- 13:02other considers what happens afterward.
- 13:05Aim for deliberate actions.
- 13:07I'm not gonna tell you they're easy.
- 13:10But when we're deliberate, people around us, they
- 13:14start to know.
- 13:15They start to realize that we're a different
- 13:17kind of person.
- 13:21I think that's a very important thing.
- 13:28And the more we think about that, the
- 13:30more we can ask ourselves another question.
- 13:34Deliberate, intentional, what is that?
- 13:36So I am consciously acting in a way
- 13:44that it's gonna make an impact, but I
- 13:47know it's gonna positively hopefully affect my future.
- 13:52You know, there were some shows on yesterday
- 13:53about kindness.
- 13:55And there was one on today, lots of
- 13:57people go to a car dealer and they're
- 13:58not dressed in their, let's say their nine
- 14:01or 10 clothes.
- 14:04Well, they did another experiment.
- 14:05And this experiment was different.
- 14:06They went there.
- 14:07Kid was maybe just out of college.
- 14:13Came in all, you know, bad clothes.
- 14:18And they're talking to everybody.
- 14:20And sales guy says, hey, well, what took
- 14:21you so long to get down here?
- 14:23He's like, I'm gonna be honest.
- 14:24I don't know anything about Lamborghini.
- 14:26I don't even know anything about the dealership.
- 14:27But you know, I'll be honest, I was
- 14:29really curious about this car.
- 14:30And I'm really thinking about it because I
- 14:33think I want this car.
- 14:36Well, man, that's great.
- 14:37What's been keeping you?
- 14:39I guess I was a little scared.
- 14:41And now I decided to finally just take
- 14:43the plunge.
- 14:46Number 19, guys, respond according to your values.
- 14:50Ask yourself this question.
- 14:52What kind of person do I wanna be
- 14:54in this situation?
- 14:56Your response should reflect your standards, not simply
- 14:59mirror somebody else's behavior.
- 15:02I know other people have tried to do
- 15:03that.
- 15:04And they're like, oh, wait a minute.
- 15:05That's not what I wanted.
- 15:07I did what he did, or I did
- 15:09what she did.
- 15:10But that wasn't the path that I wanted
- 15:12to take, right?
- 15:14That wasn't the path that I wanna take.
- 15:15And I think that can become a problem
- 15:17for a lot of us because we're like,
- 15:19well, if I follow this recipe, then that
- 15:21means I'm gonna get exactly what I want.
- 15:23No, response needs to reflect your standards, not
- 15:28someone else's.
- 15:29Number 20, guys, let somebody else's behavior reveal
- 15:34them, not change you.
- 15:37When somebody behaves poorly, that's not a reflection
- 15:40on you.
- 15:41Let that provide information about them and who
- 15:43they are.
- 15:45Don't allow their behavior to transform you into
- 15:47somebody you don't recognize.
- 15:52Number 21, protect your dignity when emotions rise.
- 15:58Conflict can tempt us to say things we
- 16:02would never be caught saying.
- 16:04Protect your dignity at all costs.
- 16:06When the conversation ends, you still have to
- 16:09live with the way you handled yourself and
- 16:14the way you treated others.
- 16:21That's a powerful thing.
- 16:23Number 22, stop becoming somebody you dislike during
- 16:26conflict.
- 16:27You're fine every other time, but why is
- 16:30it during conflict, you don't like yourself?
- 16:32You become somebody different.
- 16:43I think that's an important thing to realize.
- 16:52And as we realize this, we're gonna say,
- 16:54wait a minute, I think I've grown, I
- 16:56think I've changed, right?
- 17:00Winning, ladies and gentlemen, isn't worth becoming cruel,
- 17:05reckless, heartless, disrespectful, deceitful.
- 17:10If conflict repeatedly brings out a version of
- 17:13yourself you don't like, change how you participate
- 17:17in it.
- 17:19Change how you show up.
- 17:20If a decision comes to mind, you're like,
- 17:22wait a minute, that's not who I am.
- 17:25Why am I thinking that?
- 17:26Don't beat yourself on the head.
- 17:28Just say, okay, let me shift the thought.
- 17:31And then that won't be so apparent that
- 17:34you wanna do that.
- 17:36Number 23, guys, being calm doesn't mean being
- 17:40weak.
- 17:41You could be completely calm and still be
- 17:43completely serious.
- 17:44Strength doesn't require shouting.
- 17:47Sometimes the most powerful response is delivered clearly,
- 17:51cleanly, calmly, and without unnecessary drama.
- 17:55I know so many people that wanna paint
- 17:57a picture with drama.
- 17:59They feel drama's gonna get them the limelight.
- 18:02But you know what drama does?
- 18:03Drama just gets them more disrespected, more disrespected,
- 18:15more disrespected.
- 18:17That's a big problem, guys.
- 18:20Why?
- 18:24I think it comes down to the fact
- 18:26that most people will think something, but then
- 18:30they won't change because they don't understand.
- 18:36I know a lot of you are saying,
- 18:38well, this doesn't make sense.
- 18:40And it may not until you're actually in
- 18:42the situation, okay?
- 18:44Number 24, you can be firm without becoming
- 18:48cruel or a monster.
- 18:50Boundaries can be direct, guys.
- 18:53No can mean no.
- 18:55You can disagree, end a conversation, or remove
- 18:58yourself from a situation without deliberately trying to
- 19:02hurt somebody.
- 19:06I think that's important, guys.
- 19:08Number 25, control what belongs to you.
- 19:13Your words, your choices, your actions, your boundaries,
- 19:18your attention, and behavior belong to you.
- 19:22That's where your effort should go.
- 19:26Control what is actually yours to control.
- 19:31Number 26, guys, release what doesn't.
- 19:37You cannot control another person's thoughts, behaviors, attitude,
- 19:41or interpretation of you.
- 19:43Stop exhausting yourself trying to manage things that
- 19:46don't belong to you.
- 19:46But what you can do, ladies and gentlemen,
- 19:48is you could change how you react.
- 19:50You could change how you show up in
- 19:52the world, okay?
- 19:54And by doing that, that's going to have
- 19:55a very big, big impact.
- 20:00An impact that I think is going to
- 20:01make a huge change.
- 20:03Okay, a very, very huge change.
- 20:08And that change might be the difference to
- 20:11whether you become a success or not.
- 20:16Number 27, stop allowing difficult people in your
- 20:22life to determine your character.
- 20:24That's not their job.
- 20:27Someone else's bad behavior shouldn't become permission for
- 20:30your own.
- 20:32Your character matters most when maintaining it becomes
- 20:37difficult.
- 20:39I think a lot of people say things
- 20:43that they're going to do, but then when
- 20:44it becomes difficult, they change the story.
- 20:49They change, well, their level of commitment.
- 20:54From being very committed to being, well, barely
- 20:59even able to show up if they do
- 21:01even show up.
- 21:03Number 28, your response always becomes your story.
- 21:08What somebody did becomes part of their story.
- 21:11How you respond becomes part of yours.
- 21:14Remember that before allowing somebody else's behavior to
- 21:17write your next chapter for you, it's your
- 21:21choice.
- 21:22It's your life.
- 21:23Don't let somebody else dictate who and how
- 21:27you should become or do something.
- 21:29Number 29, choose reactions your future self won't
- 21:34regret.
- 21:35Think for a moment beyond the next 30
- 21:38seconds.
- 21:39Can you do that?
- 21:40Sure.
- 21:41Tomorrow, next week, right?
- 21:45Next month, next quarter, next year.
- 21:48Will you actually respect how you handled this
- 21:51moment right now?
- 21:54Give yourself, that is your future self a
- 21:58response.
- 21:59You can stand behind today.
- 22:01And then number 30, please take back control
- 22:05of how you respond.
- 22:07This is where everything comes together.
- 22:10You don't need control over another person to
- 22:12regain control of the situation.
- 22:14Start with yourself.
- 22:15Your response is yours to choose.
- 22:18Some people may know exactly how to get
- 22:20a reaction out of you because they've watched
- 22:23your patterns.
- 22:23They know where your buttons are.
- 22:25They know how to press them.
- 22:27They know the subject that irritates you most.
- 22:30They know the accusations that make you defensive.
- 22:36They know the words that get your blood
- 22:41to boil, that gets you angry.
- 22:43But knowing your buttons doesn't mean they have
- 22:46to keep controlling them.
- 22:48See, the next time you feel yourself being
- 22:50pulled into that familiar reaction you don't want,
- 22:56pause.
- 22:58Ask yourself what the other person expects you
- 23:01to do.
- 23:02Then ask a more important question.
- 23:05What do you actually want to do?
- 23:07Maybe you respond calmly.
- 23:10Maybe you establish a boundary.
- 23:13Maybe you say, you'll discuss it later.
- 23:17Maybe you walk away.
- 23:19Maybe you don't respond at all.
- 23:21Silence doesn't make you weak, guys.
- 23:24Calmness doesn't make you weak.
- 23:26Refusing to participate in somebody else's chaos doesn't
- 23:30make you weak.
- 23:34It means you're becoming more deliberate about who
- 23:36controls your behavior.
- 23:38And that's a pretty big step in your
- 23:40life.
- 23:41And remember, emotional control doesn't mean accepting disrespect.
- 23:44You can stand up for yourself anytime.
- 23:47You can say no.
- 23:50You can remove somebody from your life.
- 23:52You can make difficult decisions.
- 23:54Right now, the difference is that you're making
- 23:58those decisions rather than allowing someone to provoke
- 24:01them out of you.
- 24:03There's a big difference.
- 24:04Don't give another person that much control.
- 24:06Let their behavior reveal their character.
- 24:10Let your response reveal yours.
- 24:14Protect your dignity.
- 24:16Protect your energy.
- 24:19Protect the person you've worked so hard to
- 24:22build and become.
- 24:24And when somebody tries to push that familiar
- 24:27hot button again, remember that they don't control
- 24:31what happens after they push it.
- 24:34You do.
- 24:36So you might say, well, John, how do
- 24:37I handle that?
- 24:39If you know somebody's about to push the
- 24:41button, don't respond.
- 24:46It might be difficult, but trust me, you
- 24:48can do it.
- 24:49And when you stop responding, they're going to
- 24:51stop basically accusing you.
- 24:54They're going to stop pushing the button.
- 24:55They're like, oh, it doesn't work.
- 24:56The button's broken.
- 24:59That doesn't bother me anymore.
- 25:01Whether it does or doesn't, it doesn't bother
- 25:02me anymore.
- 25:03You're going to get them to think that,
- 25:04and then they're going to stop it.
- 25:07You control what happens, ladies and gentlemen.
- 25:10You're the one.
- 25:11You're the pilot.
- 25:12You're the one in command of your life.
- 25:14You are your creator.
- 25:18You're your creator.
- 25:18You create the world.
- 25:20And I know sometimes when we ask for
- 25:23things, they don't exactly come in the moment
- 25:25or second we want.
- 25:27But I've learned that if we're intentional, if
- 25:30we're grateful, and we're consistent, and keep showing
- 25:33up, life does get a little bit easier
- 25:37each day.
- 25:39Until eventually, we reach our goals.
- 25:43And then we realize everything we've done was
- 25:47all worth it.
- 25:49It all led up to this amazing moment
- 25:51in our life.
- 25:55This amazing moment.
- 25:56This moment that's changing who we are right
- 25:59before our very eyes.
- 26:01Okay?
- 26:02That's the key, guys.
- 26:04That's the ultimate key.
- 26:07And maybe you're looking at this, you're saying
- 26:09to me, hey, John, I deal with this
- 26:12every day.
- 26:12My way of handling it is to just
- 26:15walk away.
- 26:16That's fine.
- 26:18But I don't want you to do something
- 26:20that's going to cause you to lose energy
- 26:22in your life.
- 26:24Right?
- 26:26Let this roll off your back like cold
- 26:29or warm water in a shower.
- 26:34It has no value.
- 26:35When you detach from something, that thing has
- 26:40no more control or value over you.
- 26:42Does that make some sense?
- 26:43I mean, I hope it does.
- 26:45When you're in a situation, you're like, oh
- 26:46my gosh, I actually get this.
- 26:48Now I know how this happens.
- 26:50Yeah, you know what happens.
- 26:53Ladies and gentlemen, if you don't know who
- 26:54I am by now, allow me to introduce
- 26:56myself.
- 26:57I am John C.
- 26:59Morland.
- 26:59And this has been another amazing, powerful episode
- 27:03of the ever-popular Inspirations for Your Life
- 27:05show.
- 27:08The show right now, ladies and gentlemen, is
- 27:10in its fifth year.
- 27:12In just a few more months, we'll be
- 27:15wrapping up the fifth year.
- 27:16We'll be starting S6, season six.
- 27:20I thank you so much for choosing to
- 27:22spend this precious time with me.
- 27:25Please make the decision right now to take
- 27:28back control of how you respond in life.
- 27:31And don't ever let somebody else's chaos decide
- 27:35who you're going to be.
- 27:37I think sometimes we do this because we
- 27:40feel like we're under pressure.
- 27:42And if we don't, well, we're going to
- 27:45be left behind.
- 27:47You're not.
- 27:48That's just the pressure of people trying to
- 27:50get you to do what they want.
- 27:52That's their coercion.
- 27:54That's their creative manipulation.
- 27:57Ladies and gentlemen, please do check out BelieveMeAchieved
- 27:59.com.
- 28:00I'll see you on another show real soon.
- 28:01Be well, everyone.
