- 0:00Doing Marriage Well for October 8th, 2026 Seeing what you expect,
- 0:04how focus shapes your marriage.
- 0:06As I suggested on Monday, we can miss something because we are looking for something else.
- 0:11And as with the moonwalking bear, what we miss may be rather obvious.
- 0:15Our brains are very good at focusing on one thing. What we call multitasking
- 0:19is actually rapidly switching between two things.
- 0:22Once we focus on something, everything else moves to the background.
- 0:25When we need to focus on something, that single-mindedness is great, but it comes at a cost.
- 0:31The other thing is we tend to see what we expect. Scientists say our brains
- 0:34function as predictive machines rather than passive video recorders.
- 0:38We filter for what we expect, which means filtering out other things.
- 0:43Even if we see everything, we tend to exaggerate what we expect and downplay everything else.
- 0:48Focusing on a task can cause us to miss what our spouse is doing or saying.
- 0:51There are certain times when we need to focus on something other than our spouse,
- 0:55but try to keep some awareness of them when they are around.
- 0:58If nothing else, check in every so often. At the very least,
- 1:01look at them once in a while.
- 1:03Another possibility is we are focused on our spouse, but not on something that is real.
- 1:07For example, Sam becomes suspicious that Chris is having an affair.
- 1:11There are no red flags, just a vague feeling. But now Sam is looking for signs of cheating.
- 1:17That means trying to see what Chris says and does as evidence of adultery.
- 1:21It also means ignoring things that suggest there is no affair If Chris starts
- 1:25to notice being treated differently, things could get even more difficult Chris
- 1:29may pull back as a result of how Sam is acting And Sam will see this change
- 1:33as further evidence of an affair.
- 1:35Another example is thinking your spouse is mad at you You magnify any hint of
- 1:39displeasure and downplay actions that suggest they are not mad,
- 1:42You can turn this around and use the power of focus to improve your marriage,
- 1:46Assuming the best is a matter of focus Likewise, for the benefit of the doubt Focus is a tool.
- 1:52Like any tool, it can be used for good or bad.
- 1:55One way to ensure you don't use it for bad is to check yourself.
- 1:59Ask, am I observing reality or am I looking for what I expect to see?
- 2:03This is Paul asking what you focus on.
