- 0:11Speaker 2: like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land of
- 0:14Speaker 2: which this podcast is recorded on a wondery country, acknowledging

- 0:27Speaker 2: the storytelling of you to make a difference for today
- 0:31Speaker 2: and lasting impact for tomorrow.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Let's get into it.
- 0:34Speaker 3: She's on the Money, She's on the Money.
- 0:57Speaker 4: Hello, and welcome to the podcast Millennials who want Financial Freedom.
- 1:04Speaker 4: My name is Jessica Ricki and today I'm here as
- 1:06Speaker 4: always with Queen Victoria Divine.
- 1:09Speaker 5: Hello, jous, I'm actually really disappointed in you today. Why
- 1:13Speaker 5: because you could have started that as Hello and welcome
- 1:16Speaker 5: to She's on the Money the podcast.
- 1:18Speaker 4: But happy Christmat Do you know what I've missed? And
- 1:20Speaker 4: we made this pun last year. I'm going to start again.
- 1:22Speaker 4: Everybody pretend this is the start. Hello and welcome to
- 1:24Speaker 4: Trees on the Money Y the Podcast Millennials who want
- 1:28Speaker 4: financial freedom.
- 1:28Speaker 2: You.
- 1:29Speaker 1: I can't believe. I'm miss I'm really disappointed in you.
- 1:32Speaker 1: We have it on a ball ball and everything.
- 1:33Speaker 5: After this episode is recorded, you need to go and
- 1:36Speaker 5: think about what you've done.
- 1:37Speaker 1: I'll go Seeck in the corner. But do you want
- 1:39Speaker 1: to talk about Christmas?
- 1:40Speaker 5: I always want to talk about Christmas, and everybody is surprised.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Not at all.
- 1:44Speaker 4: Last year we did four episodes. This year we've rained
- 1:46Speaker 4: it in and this is the second of two.
- 1:48Speaker 1: But I'm really disappointed.
- 1:50Speaker 5: But we did have to negotiate them down because there
- 1:52Speaker 5: were so many other topics I really wanted to cover
- 1:54Speaker 5: one hundred percent.
- 1:55Speaker 4: We love Christmas and we love the community. It gets
- 1:58Speaker 4: us so excited to hear everybody's money, wins and tips.
- 2:01Speaker 4: So we thought, why not combine all of those things
- 2:04Speaker 4: together into this one fun, amazing episode.
- 2:07Speaker 1: How are we incorporating investing, Jess? We're not okay? All
- 2:11Speaker 1: the things you love? Yeah, all the things I love.
- 2:13Speaker 5: So honestly, no one thought about me today. It's fine,
- 2:17Speaker 5: all right, Jess. Today we are obviously celebrating our top ten.
- 2:21Speaker 5: She's on the money community Christmas savings hacks. Because recently
- 2:25Speaker 5: we asked you guys for your tips and tricks, and
- 2:27Speaker 5: you obviously delivered. So today, Jess, you and I are
- 2:30Speaker 5: going to be picking our top five each and we're
- 2:32Speaker 5: gonna be sharing them on the show. Now, what you
- 2:35Speaker 5: guys didn't know is that we've mixed them up because
- 2:38Speaker 5: Jess and I could not pick which ones were our
- 2:41Speaker 5: top five, so we put them together and we have
- 2:43Speaker 5: a list of ten. And it's gonna be like picking
- 2:46Speaker 5: team members in primary school for your sporting team, and
- 2:49Speaker 5: it'll be like you.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Get to go.
- 2:50Speaker 5: So Jess will pick the first time, I'll go, and
- 2:52Speaker 5: I'll pick the next, and then the last two will
- 2:54Speaker 5: be our least favorites. But because they are the top ten,
- 2:58Speaker 5: our producers laughing, but I'm not laughing. But because they're
- 3:01Speaker 5: the top ten, we obviously love all of them. Just
- 3:03Speaker 5: bringing some like primary school sports energy to this.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Oh spicy, Now, don't forget.
- 3:08Speaker 4: Last week we also spoke about how to navigate the
- 3:10Speaker 4: financial and social anxieties at this time of year. So
- 3:13Speaker 4: if you miss that episode, if you're feeling a little
- 3:15Speaker 4: bit stressy, please go back and listen to it. We
- 3:18Speaker 4: want you to look after yourselves and feel good about
- 3:20Speaker 4: this time of year and this episode just meant to
- 3:22Speaker 4: be a little bit lighthearted and fun.
- 3:24Speaker 5: Absolutely, it is so important to keep that in mind
- 3:27Speaker 5: because it is honestly such a tough time of the
- 3:29Speaker 5: year for so many people, and the pressure that the
- 3:32Speaker 5: festive season puts on us, I just feel like can
- 3:35Speaker 5: be really unfair, So Jess. According to a study from
- 3:38Speaker 5: MiQ Australia, did you know that thirty four percent of
- 3:42Speaker 5: Australians are expecting to spend more this holiday season compared
- 3:46Speaker 5: to last year despite rising inflation rates, interest rates and
- 3:49Speaker 5: the cost of living expenses.
- 3:51Speaker 4: Thirty four percent is a mind boggling amount, especially when
- 3:54Speaker 4: you factor that in on top of everything else, like
- 3:57Speaker 4: you just said, that's going on. So hopefully some of
- 3:59Speaker 4: these little hacks and tricks, it might be a bit
- 4:01Speaker 4: close to Christmas now, but file them away and save
- 4:04Speaker 4: them for next year, because I think that these are
- 4:06Speaker 4: the kinds of things that honestly are really smart and
- 4:08Speaker 4: can make a huge difference if you take the time
- 4:11Speaker 4: to plan starting now, Are you feeling like you're spending
- 4:13Speaker 4: a lot more of this festive season?
- 4:15Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 4:15Speaker 1: I think so.
- 4:16Speaker 4: I think especially alongside like just the cost of like
- 4:19Speaker 4: food for dinner, like we do a friends mess and
- 4:21Speaker 4: the cost of just a dinner, Like, we have the
- 4:23Speaker 4: same amount of people this year, but the cost of
- 4:25Speaker 4: feeding everyone has gone up because the price of all
- 4:28Speaker 4: of the basic stuff has got up. I feel like
- 4:30Speaker 4: my allocation within my budget hasn't really shifted too significantly,
- 4:33Speaker 4: but the money is just not going as far, which
- 4:35Speaker 4: is hard.
- 4:36Speaker 5: We should do an episode next year at some point
- 4:39Speaker 5: about how to reallocate your budget and like where you
- 4:42Speaker 5: probably should fluff it out a bit, keeping in mind
- 4:45Speaker 5: the fact that the cost of living is increasing. I
- 4:47Speaker 5: feel like talking about like, hey, like on average, people
- 4:50Speaker 5: are spending x amount more on their groceries, So this
- 4:53Speaker 5: is good to be mindful of, and I'll do some
- 4:55Speaker 5: research and bring that to the table because I feel
- 4:57Speaker 5: like at the moment we're all feeling the pinch, but
- 4:59Speaker 5: some of us just can't articulate where or when we
- 5:01Speaker 5: just feel like we have less money. And back to
- 5:03Speaker 5: the question I asked you, Jess, I feel like I've
- 5:06Speaker 5: been spending more because one, I'm going out with more
- 5:08Speaker 5: people at this time of the year and trying to
- 5:10Speaker 5: catch up with everybody. But two, we have bigger Christmas
- 5:14Speaker 5: things planned this year for like my family and for
- 5:16Speaker 5: Steve's family, Like, there's just a lot more going on.
- 5:18Speaker 5: So I feel like, Jess, we are not the only
- 5:21Speaker 5: ones feeling the pinch this year in one way or another.
- 5:23Speaker 1: So how about we get into it. Sounds good. What
- 5:25Speaker 1: is your first little hack that you've got from the community.
- 5:28Speaker 5: Okay, this one is very self involved because I obviously
- 5:31Speaker 5: love shop Back and think it's a really really good
- 5:33Speaker 5: money win.
- 5:34Speaker 1: But our friend Chloe.
- 5:36Speaker 5: Antonil both say use shop back to save money on
- 5:39Speaker 5: gifts and buy gift cards for you to spend over
- 5:42Speaker 5: the festive period, and I just feel like that one
- 5:44Speaker 5: straight off the bat at this point in the year,
- 5:46Speaker 5: if you are not on shop back yet, like I
- 5:49Speaker 5: feel like a bully. I'm not a bully, hah, but
- 5:51Speaker 5: like it's just a no brainer because it's free money.
- 5:53Speaker 5: It's not even like sign up and they'll sell your data. No, no,
- 5:56Speaker 5: no sign up and they'll give you free money money win.
- 5:58Speaker 4: That is absolutely our money in My first little hack
- 6:01Speaker 4: comes from so many people, and I really like it
- 6:04Speaker 4: because this is exactly what I do. Amy Shaza and
- 6:08Speaker 4: a bunch of other people all said get your list
- 6:10Speaker 4: ready in time for Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales,
- 6:14Speaker 4: So start thinking about people early because then you can
- 6:17Speaker 4: cash in on those sales and get the things that
- 6:18Speaker 4: you're already going to get, but usually with a really
- 6:21Speaker 4: nice discount, and then you can often stack it with
- 6:23Speaker 4: shot back or cash back on top of that.
- 6:26Speaker 1: So I've got another one. Are you ready?
- 6:29Speaker 5: And I feel like this one really resonates with me
- 6:31Speaker 5: because I've been known to do this. So our friend
- 6:34Speaker 5: Dee suggested baked or homemade or second hand gifts, which
- 6:39Speaker 5: we have done for a number of years.
- 6:41Speaker 1: In our family.
- 6:42Speaker 5: It's handmade, homemade or second hand is the rule, and
- 6:46Speaker 5: then we give each other like a limit of how
- 6:48Speaker 5: much we need to spend. And I think I've hyped
- 6:52Speaker 5: on about this if you listen to our Christmas episodes
- 6:54Speaker 5: last year.
- 6:54Speaker 1: I believe it was Jess.
- 6:56Speaker 5: I told you all about the kitchen that I got
- 6:59Speaker 5: on gum Tree.
- 7:00Speaker 1: That was an absolute circus.
- 7:01Speaker 5: It was a kid's kitchen, but because it was secondhand,
- 7:04Speaker 5: it was actually really well looked after. I think we
- 7:06Speaker 5: picked it up for like twenty dollars or something on
- 7:08Speaker 5: gum Tree, but the bonus was when we went to
- 7:11Speaker 5: pick it up, the guy was like, oh my gosh, like,
- 7:13Speaker 5: my daughter's so sad about losing this. And she was
- 7:15Speaker 5: there and I was like, oh, my gosh, don't worry.
- 7:16Speaker 5: It's going to like, you know, my niece and my nephew.
- 7:19Speaker 5: And I showed her a photo and she gave us
- 7:21Speaker 5: all of the like little kids pots and pans and
- 7:24Speaker 5: plates and cups and fake fruit and vegetables and stuff,
- 7:27Speaker 5: and she's like, oh, they'll need this and they'll need that,
- 7:29Speaker 5: and like the dad was really happy because I think
- 7:31Speaker 5: he was just getting rid of a whole heap of
- 7:33Speaker 5: junk from the playroom. I mean, long story short, it
- 7:35Speaker 5: did cost us a lot in fuel because we brought
- 7:37Speaker 5: the wrong car. It didn't fit in that car. I
- 7:39Speaker 5: had to drive home, swap cars come back while Steve,
- 7:42Speaker 5: dressed in an ugly Christmas sweater, sat on the side
- 7:45Speaker 5: of Smith Street late at night in Fitzroy, which is
- 7:48Speaker 5: a one out of ten experience. So I think people
- 7:50Speaker 5: thought he was crazy because not only did he have
- 7:52Speaker 5: an ugly Christmas sweater on, but he also was just
- 7:55Speaker 5: sitting with a kid's kitchen and people were kind of like,
- 7:58Speaker 5: I don't think that guy was weird, Yeah what? And
- 8:01Speaker 5: Steve was just like I was mortified because every second
- 8:03Speaker 5: person walking past was like, dude, why are you calling
- 8:06Speaker 5: DIBs on this kid's kitchen on the side of the world,
- 8:08Speaker 5: Like this makes no sense, but anyway, I just feel
- 8:11Speaker 5: like homemade, handmade or secondhand is actually a really good idea.
- 8:14Speaker 5: I also have and we probably should post it on
- 8:16Speaker 5: our stories. I killer recipe that impresses everybody for passion
- 8:21Speaker 5: fruit yoyos that have never done me a disservice, Like
- 8:24Speaker 5: every time I make it and gifted to someone, They're like,
- 8:26Speaker 5: those are the best yos ever And I'm like, thanks
- 8:28Speaker 5: taste dot com dot au for the recipe by oh amazing. Yeah,
- 8:31Speaker 5: I feel like upcycled gifts are really underrated, like buying
- 8:34Speaker 5: something really affordably and then making it personalized and then
- 8:37Speaker 5: you can tell whoever you're giving it to. I made
- 8:39Speaker 5: this like I did it with my hands and my love.
- 8:41Speaker 5: How nice is that? And to be honest, Jess, going
- 8:43Speaker 5: back to my kitchen, I bought it, I cleaned it,
- 8:46Speaker 5: I gave it to the kids.
- 8:48Speaker 1: You would have bought it. You would have like.
- 8:49Speaker 5: Pulled the thing apart, redesigned the thing, painted it in
- 8:53Speaker 5: their colors, named it, done absolutely everything to make it
- 8:56Speaker 5: a completely different kitchen and then gifted it to them.
- 8:59Speaker 5: I don't have your creativity, but like that could be
- 9:02Speaker 5: an idea.
- 9:02Speaker 1: Yeah, give it a little huge.
- 9:04Speaker 4: I have a hack here from Nicole who some people
- 9:07Speaker 4: might disagree with this, but I really love a practical gift.
- 9:11Speaker 4: And she said she has asked her parents to pay
- 9:14Speaker 4: for the plumber that she desperately needs as her Christmas gift.
- 9:17Speaker 1: I feel like that's a great.
- 9:19Speaker 5: That's a great gift because at the moment, trades are
- 9:21Speaker 5: so expensive. As somebody who is currently at the tail
- 9:25Speaker 5: end of renovating their house. Oooh, Like she spent os
- 9:30Speaker 5: Like nobody goes you know what, I wanted to spend
- 9:32Speaker 5: money on drainage, Like not a single person.
- 9:34Speaker 1: I really like my toilet. I'm blocked for Christmas.
- 9:37Speaker 4: I feel like if you have something practical that you need,
- 9:40Speaker 4: whether you need textbooks for school or runners because you're broke,
- 9:43Speaker 4: or like something that you go, oh, I'm not excited
- 9:45Speaker 4: to buy that.
- 9:46Speaker 1: That's a good gift. Yeah no, I love that and
- 9:49Speaker 1: vice versa.
- 9:50Speaker 5: Right, Like, maybe you could start asking your friends and
- 9:53Speaker 5: family if you're like, oh, what do you want instead
- 9:56Speaker 5: of saying, oh, Jess, what do you want for Christmas
- 9:57Speaker 5: because I'm not gonna outwardly say immediately plumber, like I
- 10:01Speaker 5: wouldn't think of that, be like, oh, yes, like you're
- 10:04Speaker 5: renovating at the moment. Do you want me to pay
- 10:06Speaker 5: for you know something towards that. Yeah, friends would jump
- 10:10Speaker 5: up and down over that, Like if you offered you
- 10:11Speaker 5: can pay for my plumbing, this you just probably not.
- 10:14Speaker 5: But okay, sorry, well I already paid for it.
- 10:18Speaker 1: You do give you a rand? I feel like it's
- 10:19Speaker 1: a very big bill. All right, Jess, I have another
- 10:21Speaker 1: one for you. Are you ready? Yes? What have you got? Okay?
- 10:24Speaker 5: So this is another one, and I'm being very self
- 10:26Speaker 5: indulgent because I'm just picking the ones that I resonate
- 10:28Speaker 5: most with. It kind of happens when you're picking sports teams.
- 10:31Speaker 5: You definitely should keep doing this with money wins. But
- 10:34Speaker 5: I feel like, you know, growing up, I hated that, like,
- 10:37Speaker 5: oh you pick, I pick, you pick, because I was
- 10:39Speaker 5: literally always the last kid. Because that was a little
- 10:42Speaker 5: nightmare in Peh. I wouldn't pick me either, but like,
- 10:45Speaker 5: don't make me feel that bad, you know, a little victoria,
- 10:47Speaker 5: So like, do it with your money wins, don't do
- 10:49Speaker 5: it with your children one out of ten idea, But
- 10:52Speaker 5: this one I'm being self indulgent because it is literally
- 10:55Speaker 5: something my family do, and that secret center for the
- 10:58Speaker 5: whole family with a fifty dollar budget. So in my family,
- 11:02Speaker 5: because it's a little bit bigger and a little bit
- 11:04Speaker 5: more extended, all of the adults get together and we
- 11:07Speaker 5: do a secret Santa. So it's kind of we call
- 11:10Speaker 5: it Chris Kringle, but I think it's exactly the same thing,
- 11:13Speaker 5: right where we pull names out of a hat. Literally,
- 11:16Speaker 5: that's how technical it gets. All of our names go
- 11:19Speaker 5: on a piece of paper, get ripped up, pulled out,
- 11:21Speaker 5: and that's who we're buying a Christmas present for that year.
- 11:24Speaker 5: So on Christmas Day, everyone gets a present, but they
- 11:26Speaker 5: get one present. And the amount of money that is
- 11:29Speaker 5: spent on that, I mean, it could be fifty bucks,
- 11:31Speaker 5: it could be one hundred dollars. But I think the
- 11:32Speaker 5: most important thing is that that amount is a reasonable
- 11:36Speaker 5: amount for you and your family to purchase. So if
- 11:38Speaker 5: your budgets are at twenty dollars, just call it twenty dollars.
- 11:41Speaker 5: I don't think it should extend past that. If one
- 11:44Speaker 5: member in your family can't afford that, I think we
- 11:46Speaker 5: should set the baseline at a baseline, not go, oh,
- 11:49Speaker 5: well it's one hundred dollars and you know your aunt
- 11:51Speaker 5: or your uncle or your cousin just can't afford that.
- 11:54Speaker 5: I think that we should set it lower or set
- 11:56Speaker 5: a different rule and just be mindful without saying like, oh, yes,
- 11:59Speaker 5: I've said up lower because of you. It should just
- 12:01Speaker 5: be use your brain and work it out, because I
- 12:04Speaker 5: just think that, you know, this time of year isn't
- 12:06Speaker 5: the time of year that we point out when people
- 12:08Speaker 5: are struggling or that maybe they can't afford it. But
- 12:11Speaker 5: I think just you know, picking something that's a little
- 12:13Speaker 5: bit more mindful is really helpful. One, the pressure is
- 12:16Speaker 5: off because you only have to think of one present,
- 12:19Speaker 5: but two, it's far less financially stressful.
- 12:22Speaker 4: Yeah, And if you don't want to do where you
- 12:23Speaker 4: buy for specific people, if you've got a big family
- 12:25Speaker 4: and you don't see your aunts, your uncles and your
- 12:27Speaker 4: cousins all that often Bad Santa or naughty Santa is
- 12:30Speaker 4: a really fun one as well, where you just buy
- 12:31Speaker 4: a general gift and usually people try to make it
- 12:34Speaker 4: a bit funny or a bit fun and then you
- 12:36Speaker 4: steal gifts from everybody and that's a really good way
- 12:38Speaker 4: to involve everyone, and you can set the same limit
- 12:40Speaker 4: as well.
- 12:40Speaker 5: Pro tip as someone who has also done this, the
- 12:43Speaker 5: nerf gun always performs the best, Oh brilliant because we
- 12:47Speaker 5: all want to shoot everybody after so it's just like
- 12:50Speaker 5: a lot of fun. So everybody wants the nerf gun
- 12:52Speaker 5: because everything else is like, I don't want a candle. Also,
- 12:56Speaker 5: one year I put together a pack and it was
- 12:58Speaker 5: a tiny bottle of gin, a bottle of tonic water,
- 13:01Speaker 5: and then like an orange lemon and a lime. And
- 13:02Speaker 5: that was actually a really good Chris Kringle present because
- 13:05Speaker 5: one it felt a little bit customer who doesn't want
- 13:07Speaker 5: a gin and tonic? I mean people who don't like
- 13:09Speaker 5: gin and tonics, like you probably don't want to tonic.
- 13:11Speaker 5: But I feel like that was a good Chris Kringle
- 13:13Speaker 5: present because who doesn't love that?
- 13:15Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 13:16Speaker 4: Oh, like little silly kmart appliances like waffle makers or
- 13:18Speaker 4: fairy foss machines what means well, honey, the next hack
- 13:23Speaker 4: I have comes from Madeleine. If you don't mind living
- 13:26Speaker 4: on the edge, you can visit Cole's or your local
- 13:29Speaker 4: deli on Christmas Eve kind of close to closing time,
- 13:32Speaker 4: because more often than not they're heavily discounting all of
- 13:35Speaker 4: the product because they're closed the next day. I guess
- 13:37Speaker 4: the downside of this is if you're going.
- 13:39Speaker 1: To coluse, imagine like.
- 13:40Speaker 4: Four pm on Christmas Eve, you may or may not
- 13:43Speaker 4: well firstly get trampled and also quite possibly not have
- 13:46Speaker 4: the widest.
- 13:46Speaker 1: Selection to choose from.
- 13:48Speaker 4: But if you're one of those people who's really creative
- 13:50Speaker 4: with how you cook, or if you're not that fussed
- 13:51Speaker 4: on what you get, it might be a nice way
- 13:53Speaker 4: to snag smot deals.
- 13:55Speaker 5: Yeah, that's definitely living on the edge for me, Jess, Like,
- 13:57Speaker 5: I'm not gonna wait till almost closing time for my
- 14:00Speaker 5: food to be discounted, maybe because what if it's not,
- 14:02Speaker 5: then I might not have any food because they really
- 14:04Speaker 5: needed a roast xyzed and they don't have it because
- 14:07Speaker 5: they just discounted it and someone else got it.
- 14:09Speaker 1: That's true. The anxiety's wild, that's true.
- 14:11Speaker 4: I mean shop at your local stores as well. More
- 14:13Speaker 4: often than not, your local butcher or your local fruit
- 14:16Speaker 4: market will have stuff at a better cost per unit
- 14:19Speaker 4: price than like coals or woolies words. So that's the
- 14:21Speaker 4: way you could go as well.
- 14:22Speaker 5: Speaking of coals or Woolies, my next hot tip is
- 14:24Speaker 5: from our friend Mace, and Mace has said, you need
- 14:27Speaker 5: to make sure that you set your Woolies Everyday rewards
- 14:30Speaker 5: card to save for Christmas. I didn't even know this
- 14:33Speaker 5: was a setting, but it's a setting on your rewards
- 14:36Speaker 5: card that you select and all of your gift cards
- 14:39Speaker 5: and discounts get added up and you can redeem them
- 14:42Speaker 5: at Christmas time so that your grocery bill isn't as hectic.
- 14:45Speaker 1: That's really really smart.
- 14:47Speaker 4: I like that one a lot, particularly because then you
- 14:49Speaker 4: don't really notice, like it's not like you're missing out
- 14:51Speaker 4: on money, You're not putting money.
- 14:52Speaker 1: Aside, but exactly those rewards stuck up.
- 14:55Speaker 4: If like ten bucks a year ten bucks, you could
- 14:56Speaker 4: have a couple hundred dollars by the end of the year.
- 14:58Speaker 5: I feel like I've heard of people do it this
- 15:00Speaker 5: before in our community, like and when I say, I
- 15:02Speaker 5: feel like, I know I have, But I just assumed
- 15:05Speaker 5: that everybody was kind of like saving their discounts for Christmas,
- 15:08Speaker 5: not that it was an actual setting, which is genuinely genius.
- 15:11Speaker 1: Very very smart.
- 15:12Speaker 4: And I've got a similar one here from Chelsea who says,
- 15:14Speaker 4: do the same thing, but with flybys. Basically she just
- 15:17Speaker 4: saves all of her dollars and redeems them at Christmas.
- 15:19Speaker 1: What a genius.
- 15:19Speaker 5: So I feel like I'm not nearly that smart, But
- 15:22Speaker 5: you know what I'm going to do this year, because
- 15:23Speaker 5: I think I have a fair few dollar rus in
- 15:26Speaker 5: my shopback account, I'm going to pull that out and
- 15:28Speaker 5: see who's Christmas presence I can pay for from shop
- 15:31Speaker 5: back and share the update later once I've done it.
- 15:33Speaker 1: Really smart, I can't wait.
- 15:34Speaker 5: Hit up all right, Holly. She has a really good suggestion, Jess,
- 15:38Speaker 5: are you ready for this? I think that some people
- 15:40Speaker 5: are going to be salty on this. Last week I
- 15:42Speaker 5: said cancel Christmas, but Holly said, just don't buy presents. Ah,
- 15:46Speaker 5: your face Jess is very unhappy.
- 15:48Speaker 4: HOLLI no, no, no, no, you know what, like for some people,
- 15:51Speaker 4: not doing presents works for them and aligns to their values.
- 15:54Speaker 4: But as we said last week, gif giving is my
- 15:57Speaker 4: love language and I just couldn't. However, if that's a try,
- 16:00Speaker 4: always the works for you, I am in full support
- 16:01Speaker 4: of it.
- 16:02Speaker 5: I kind of love this because Jess's face was just
- 16:04Speaker 5: like no, and then she was like but if it
- 16:06Speaker 5: aligns to your goals and values. Like I think this
- 16:08Speaker 5: is very important and I'm like, all right, Jose, it
- 16:10Speaker 5: learns to my goals and values to not buy Christmas presents.
- 16:13Speaker 1: Are you okay with that?
- 16:14Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 16:14Speaker 4: Of course, like you are not your little face to
- 16:16Speaker 4: you to get me a present.
- 16:18Speaker 1: Sad you were present. I don't want your present.
- 16:20Speaker 4: Well, too bad, I already bought it. Moving right along,
- 16:24Speaker 4: Lucky last came from Emily, Elissa and about one thousand
- 16:27Speaker 4: other people who all said, try to buy gifts throughout
- 16:30Speaker 4: the year when they are on sale. And this is
- 16:33Speaker 4: something that I got from my mum, and I feel
- 16:35Speaker 4: like a lot of other people's mums would be the same.
- 16:37Speaker 4: We always had like a gift cupboard where, especially when
- 16:40Speaker 4: I was a kid, you know, you get invites to
- 16:42Speaker 4: parties really last minute and stuff like that. So there
- 16:44Speaker 4: was always a gift cupboard where if she saw barbies
- 16:47Speaker 4: on zale or something you know that was age appropriate.
- 16:49Speaker 1: Did you loot the cupboard? I would have fluted the cupboard.
- 16:52Speaker 4: It was very very tempting, very tempting, but she knew
- 16:55Speaker 4: exactly what was in there. I could never have got away.
- 16:56Speaker 5: With it, and she would have seen you with the
- 16:58Speaker 5: new barbie, and she like, just don't have an income wed.
- 17:02Speaker 1: One thousand percent.
- 17:03Speaker 4: But now I do it a bit more intentionally, And
- 17:06Speaker 4: when I see things that remind me of my friends
- 17:08Speaker 4: and family, things that I think they will love, and
- 17:10Speaker 4: they're on sale, I more often than not will pick
- 17:12Speaker 4: them up and pop them aside to be given it
- 17:13Speaker 4: either a birthday or Christmas or any other kind of
- 17:16Speaker 4: occasion where I might want.
- 17:17Speaker 1: To just give them a little something something.
- 17:19Speaker 5: I feel like that's a genius idea in theory, because
- 17:23Speaker 5: that would not work for me. No, why not, Because like,
- 17:26Speaker 5: let's just use you as an example, Because obviously, Jess,
- 17:29Speaker 5: I'm going to buy your Christmas present. I know your
- 17:31Speaker 5: love language. But also I really love gift giving as well.
- 17:34Speaker 5: But if I had a gift cupboard and I just
- 17:37Speaker 5: collected things throughout the year they've I already have in
- 17:40Speaker 5: my head what I want to buy you. So even
- 17:42Speaker 5: if I'd bought something and put it in the cupboard
- 17:44Speaker 5: and put it away for later, like I don't want
- 17:46Speaker 5: that now.
- 17:47Speaker 1: I want to get something different.
- 17:48Speaker 5: So it would be a waste of money for me
- 17:50Speaker 5: because I would also loot my own cupboard and take all.
- 17:52Speaker 4: This stuff out of zero self control from Victoria, divine
- 17:56Speaker 4: is anybody's world.
- 17:57Speaker 5: I'm not going to go to Mecca and buy a
- 17:58Speaker 5: gorgeous like gifts even if it's on sale.
- 18:01Speaker 1: You best believe I want that body butter. Yeah, I
- 18:03Speaker 1: need it. That's fair. The boomboom cream, everybody loves it.
- 18:06Speaker 1: Do I have a gift pack this year?
- 18:08Speaker 4: A thousand percent two? Everyone is getting boom boom cream.
- 18:11Speaker 4: Let's go to a really quick break and when we
- 18:13Speaker 4: come back, VID, you and I are going to share
- 18:15Speaker 4: some of our favorite top tips. Don't go anywhere. Welcome
- 18:22Speaker 4: back everybody. Today we are talking all about Christmas hacks.
- 18:26Speaker 4: We just shared all of our favorite community ones, and
- 18:28Speaker 4: Victoria and I have got a couple of our own
- 18:30Speaker 4: up our sleeve to finish up the episode.
- 18:33Speaker 5: My first one, I'm glad you're going first because mine
- 18:36Speaker 5: are a little on the dryer slash non existence side.
- 18:40Speaker 5: I'm less festive than Jessic Gotta ITCHI, which is so fine.
- 18:44Speaker 1: That's okay. All have different goals and values.
- 18:47Speaker 5: But when I got asked to write down my favorite
- 18:49Speaker 5: Christmas hacks, I have written down all the things that
- 18:52Speaker 5: I shared in the first part of this episode.
- 18:53Speaker 1: So good from me.
- 18:54Speaker 4: You're on the same wavelength as everybody, which doesn't surprise
- 18:57Speaker 4: me because there are a bunch of smart cookies. First
- 19:00Speaker 4: tip for you guys is to buy Christmas decorations, wrapping,
- 19:04Speaker 4: things of that nature on Boxing Day. You're obviously not
- 19:07Speaker 4: gonna use it this yet, although maybe if you would,
- 19:09Speaker 4: if you've pushed your Christmas out like not everyone I
- 19:11Speaker 4: know A lot of families will do two Christmases. So
- 19:14Speaker 4: maybe you've got one the twenty fifth and one like
- 19:16Speaker 4: a week later. Yeah, we do a Christmas on like
- 19:18Speaker 4: Boxing Day or a week later. Yes, there's just too
- 19:21Speaker 4: many people, so you can snag a hot deal. Most
- 19:24Speaker 4: of the time, Christmas stuff goes a minimum fifty percent
- 19:26Speaker 4: off the day after Christmas. You can do it online,
- 19:29Speaker 4: you can go to your local kmart, you can go
- 19:30Speaker 4: to wherever. I know that historically it's been like a
- 19:33Speaker 4: real fight to the death at the shops, but the
- 19:36Speaker 4: last I mean obviously last year and the year before
- 19:38Speaker 4: with COVID, but I feel like more and more people
- 19:40Speaker 4: are turning to online. And if you are going to
- 19:43Speaker 4: go Boxing Day shopping, go early because if you go
- 19:45Speaker 4: when the shops open, it's almost always really quiet.
- 19:47Speaker 5: I feel like that is really smart. Following on from that,
- 19:51Speaker 5: when it comes to kids Christmas presents, recently, I have found,
- 19:56Speaker 5: especially with younger kids on Christmas Day, they just want
- 19:59Speaker 5: to be entertained. I have a million times over bought
- 20:02Speaker 5: really cute outfits or really fancy toys, but it's the
- 20:06Speaker 5: things that immediately engage them that are really really popular.
- 20:11Speaker 5: So at my wedding, and I guess this could be
- 20:13Speaker 5: a really good Christmas hack as well, is I made
- 20:15Speaker 5: them gift bags. Because yes, I had kids at my wedding.
- 20:19Speaker 5: I don't regret that for a second. I adore them
- 20:22Speaker 5: and I want them around me, like literally forever. I
- 20:25Speaker 5: couldn't imagine having a clack of wedding without having the
- 20:28Speaker 5: kids there. But I made them gift packs, and to
- 20:31Speaker 5: be honest, I just went to Kmart. They were so
- 20:33Speaker 5: cheap to put together. I found ninety eight cents coloring
- 20:38Speaker 5: in books Jess money win. Yeah, coloring pencils were like
- 20:41Speaker 5: three dollars. I bought some like pretty novel lollies came
- 20:45Speaker 5: out again really cheap. I just bought a multi pack
- 20:47Speaker 5: and then like spread it among a whole heap of kids.
- 20:49Speaker 5: I bought some fancy sonnies. I bought glow sticks and
- 20:52Speaker 5: play doh and they were psycho over it. They were like,
- 20:56Speaker 5: oh my god, it's like mini versions of all their
- 20:57Speaker 5: favorite things and a coloring in book and kept them
- 21:00Speaker 5: entertained for literally the whole day, like they had one
- 21:04Speaker 5: new thing and another new thing. And I think being
- 21:06Speaker 5: able to open these like smaller gifts and have things
- 21:08Speaker 5: that were keeping them entertained is a really good idea.
- 21:11Speaker 5: But literally, I think each gift pack, I mean I
- 21:14Speaker 5: did spend an extra dollar per gift bag, Jess, which
- 21:16Speaker 5: you probably don't need to do. But if you put
- 21:18Speaker 5: something like that together for kids, as opposed to going
- 21:21Speaker 5: and buying them the latest Lego or Barbie brand like
- 21:24Speaker 5: that stuff immediately starts at like forty nine dollars. From
- 21:27Speaker 5: my experience, they're gonna love it. It's novel, it's exciting.
- 21:31Speaker 5: You can save some money on kids presence, and from
- 21:35Speaker 5: my experience, kids don't fight over who got what and
- 21:39Speaker 5: when and where because they're all getting a coloring in book,
- 21:41Speaker 5: they're all getting pencils, they're all getting a lolly. And
- 21:44Speaker 5: the kids in my family, they just started trading things
- 21:46Speaker 5: as opposed to going like oh you got you know
- 21:49Speaker 5: this different thing. It was, Oh you got that color
- 21:52Speaker 5: glow stick, I want that one.
- 21:53Speaker 1: You can have my pink one. And it was actually
- 21:55Speaker 1: really sweet.
- 21:56Speaker 5: Yeah, they wheeled and dealed like little lollies and glove sticks.
- 21:59Speaker 5: And they all had the same pencils, but like one
- 22:01Speaker 5: of the little ones wanted all of the same color
- 22:03Speaker 5: pencil for some reason. But you know what you do,
- 22:05Speaker 5: you boo, here's ten pink pencils.
- 22:07Speaker 4: You live your best life, queen, go off. My next
- 22:11Speaker 4: little tip for you guys is a plant one. Because
- 22:13Speaker 4: we know a lot of people, there'shoes in the money
- 22:14Speaker 4: community are plant people just like us. There's kind of
- 22:18Speaker 4: two options here. So if you already have a lot
- 22:20Speaker 4: of plants, why don't you propagate them, give them away
- 22:22Speaker 4: as gifts. If you've got a devil's ivy, give it
- 22:24Speaker 4: a little snippy snip.
- 22:25Speaker 1: Oh you gotta liberate it.
- 22:27Speaker 4: You gotta liberate it, absolutely so snippy snip. Liberate your
- 22:30Speaker 4: own plant. Or if there's one you know doing public
- 22:32Speaker 4: theoretically maybe in your office that you want to liberate
- 22:34Speaker 4: by all means, which we would never do. We've never
- 22:37Speaker 4: done that. Absolutely, you're not. I don't know what you're
- 22:39Speaker 4: talking about, But you know what you're talking about. Get
- 22:41Speaker 4: a little cutting. You can buy it cam out like
- 22:43Speaker 4: one dollar little glass shars. You could fill it with water,
- 22:46Speaker 4: pop the propagation in it. Devil's ivy as well.
- 22:48Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 22:48Speaker 5: I wish propagation was as complicated as the word is. Yeah,
- 22:52Speaker 5: because it's not. You just snippy snippy, put it in
- 22:54Speaker 5: water and it just grows. Yeah, so you probably need
- 22:57Speaker 5: a bit more time. Maybe that's the next year, think
- 22:59Speaker 5: because right now it's nearly Christmas, so you can.
- 23:02Speaker 1: Get them rooted up.
- 23:03Speaker 4: The other option is you could go to your local
- 23:06Speaker 4: Buddings or I know IQR sell a lot of like
- 23:09Speaker 4: really affordable larger plants and succulents. Buy a big one,
- 23:13Speaker 4: split it up into smaller ones, repot them. IQA sells
- 23:16Speaker 4: pots for like two or three dollars. The Back Dollar
- 23:18Speaker 4: Shop have really cute ceramic ones as well. I think
- 23:21Speaker 4: this idea is great. Yeah, split it up and then
- 23:23Speaker 4: you turn your one twenty dollars plant into five little
- 23:26Speaker 4: gift five dollar gifts, which is perfect for people money win.
- 23:30Speaker 4: Can I have a turn now?
- 23:31Speaker 1: Absolutely?
- 23:32Speaker 5: Okay, So I love an esthetic wrapping paper. Wrapping paper
- 23:37Speaker 5: is really expensive though, So you know what I do.
- 23:39Speaker 5: I go down to office works and I buy a
- 23:41Speaker 5: fifty meter roll of PBS craft paper roll. It's brown paper.
- 23:46Speaker 5: It's really nice. Ten dollars and twenty eight cents fifty meters.
- 23:51Speaker 5: So I wrap all of my presents in brown paper.
- 23:53Speaker 5: And then the money that I spend is spent at
- 23:55Speaker 5: Kmart on cute ribbons and stuff. Because you can pick
- 23:58Speaker 5: up a really big roll of life ribbon or you know,
- 24:01Speaker 5: like what's the curling ribbon or whatever it is. Yeah,
- 24:03Speaker 5: like per roll, it's like three or four dollars for
- 24:06Speaker 5: a really big role. Everything matches, it's really cute. And
- 24:09Speaker 5: then you know what I do, because I'm not buying
- 24:11Speaker 5: cards for all of my presents under my tree, I
- 24:14Speaker 5: buy one gold Posca marker and then in gold I
- 24:17Speaker 5: write their names.
- 24:18Speaker 1: Oh it's so cute, and I think.
- 24:20Speaker 5: It's really cute, really aesthetic. And then I literally have
- 24:23Speaker 5: that role of wrapping paper from last year and I
- 24:26Speaker 5: think the year before, like it was fifty meters.
- 24:28Speaker 1: I have not run out yet, Oh my gosh.
- 24:30Speaker 4: On the note of little tags, another thing that I've
- 24:32Speaker 4: done before. I did the brown paper fiber as well.
- 24:34Speaker 4: You can buy like a little five dollar like lump
- 24:37Speaker 4: of air dry clay, and so I'll buy that, roll
- 24:40Speaker 4: it out and then you can use if you have
- 24:42Speaker 4: cookie cutters, or you can freehand it into fun little shapes.
- 24:45Speaker 4: You just pop a hole through it with a pen.
- 24:47Speaker 4: Let it air dry, and.
- 24:48Speaker 1: Then you can paint their name on it.
- 24:50Speaker 4: You can paint it different colors and if you put
- 24:52Speaker 4: a little string, so you put it on the present
- 24:54Speaker 4: and it's like the tag for the gift. But then
- 24:56Speaker 4: they keep it and it can be an ornament for
- 24:58Speaker 4: the tree.
- 24:59Speaker 1: Es how nice.
- 25:00Speaker 5: It's the difference between you and me. I bought a sharpie,
- 25:02Speaker 5: you made them an ornament. It's just not happening. My
- 25:05Speaker 5: other update, though, which is like sidetrack I do apologize,
- 25:09Speaker 5: is this year, keep all of your Christmas cards. Because
- 25:13Speaker 5: if you keep all your Christmas cards and Christmas tags,
- 25:15Speaker 5: I feel like whenever you get a gift bag, the
- 25:18Speaker 5: Christmas tag hasn't got any writing on it. You can
- 25:20Speaker 5: cut off the part that has been written and then
- 25:22Speaker 5: you can make like tags for your gifts for the
- 25:24Speaker 5: next year.
- 25:25Speaker 1: Are very smart.
- 25:27Speaker 4: The tag look really good on brown paper. Everything was
- 25:30Speaker 4: good on brown paper.
- 25:31Speaker 5: If you see me gifting anything in not brown paper,
- 25:34Speaker 5: be like, oh wow, she's run out of that brown
- 25:35Speaker 5: paper because like I'm not done here, Like I keep
- 25:37Speaker 5: using it.
- 25:38Speaker 1: I am obsessed. I think this hack is genius. That
- 25:40Speaker 1: is actually so smart.
- 25:42Speaker 4: The last tip that I have is a bit of
- 25:43Speaker 4: a shop back hack that someone shared with us previously,
- 25:46Speaker 4: and I can't remember who it was, but I think
- 25:47Speaker 4: it works particularly well for Christmas.
- 25:50Speaker 5: We're going to get in trouble for sharing this, and
- 25:52Speaker 5: shot back are gonna come for us and be like
- 25:54Speaker 5: Jess and Victoria, why are you gaming the system? We
- 25:58Speaker 5: literally work with you to put us in the best position,
- 26:00Speaker 5: and you're not though.
- 26:01Speaker 4: That's exactly it, Like it's not we're not doing anything naughty,
- 26:04Speaker 4: but it is.
- 26:04Speaker 1: Really We're not doing shot back any favors.
- 26:06Speaker 4: No, well no, But what you can do is, if
- 26:09Speaker 4: you're looking to purchase something from somewhere that maybe isn't
- 26:12Speaker 4: on shop back, or maybe doesn't have a really high
- 26:15Speaker 4: amount of cash back, like if it's just didn't it
- 26:17Speaker 4: like one or two percent, have a look if you
- 26:19Speaker 4: can purchase a gift card for the same place. Because
- 26:22Speaker 4: a lot of the time, she's smarting, gift cards have
- 26:24Speaker 4: the higher percentage back, you get one of your calls
- 26:27Speaker 4: or target gift cards that more often than not can
- 26:29Speaker 4: be used at multiple franchises, then fit under everything, and
- 26:33Speaker 4: then use that to buy gifts. So if you're like, oh,
- 26:37Speaker 4: I really want this DVD, I don't know why DVD
- 26:39Speaker 4: is the first thing I thought of. They even sell
- 26:42Speaker 4: DVD still, I have no idea. Okay, you know what,
- 26:44Speaker 4: you really want to buy a copy of Investing with
- 26:46Speaker 4: Shees and the Money.
- 26:48Speaker 1: Imagine if you said that right off the bat, I
- 26:50Speaker 1: don't know why I thought of DVD. That's fine, you
- 26:52Speaker 1: really want a copy of SES on the Money.
- 26:54Speaker 5: Investing with apparently is better though, So if you see
- 26:57Speaker 5: like Barbie Swan Lake, pick that up, I'd.
- 26:59Speaker 4: Love a copy your Bobbies like that movie pops off
- 27:02Speaker 4: back on track. You know you want a copy of
- 27:04Speaker 4: Investing in Strees of Money or the og Shoes of
- 27:05Speaker 4: the Money. Maybe a bundle, but you're like, ah, the
- 27:08Speaker 4: discount on you know, book Topia or whatever platform isn't
- 27:11Speaker 4: as high as I was like to be.
- 27:13Speaker 5: Or you want the book Toby a discount right right, right,
- 27:15Speaker 5: But you don't want to pay for shipping. If you
- 27:17Speaker 5: have to pay shipping by the gift.
- 27:19Speaker 4: Card, go get in store exactly so you names the system,
- 27:22Speaker 4: you've got extra cash back, You've got exactly what you want.
- 27:25Speaker 4: I feel like that's the best stop back and hire us.
- 27:28Speaker 4: We will continue to make you less money. Have you
- 27:32Speaker 4: got one last one for MeV before we wrap up?
- 27:34Speaker 5: I think we've talked a lot just about like buying
- 27:36Speaker 5: things and presents and gifts, But I also think my
- 27:39Speaker 5: last hack is actually just quality time, and that's what
- 27:41Speaker 5: people are you know, I guess missing out on this year.
- 27:45Speaker 5: It's funny because at the start of this episode we
- 27:47Speaker 5: said that most people are going to spend more money
- 27:49Speaker 5: this year than they did last year. But do you
- 27:51Speaker 5: know why? Quality time? Because we're actually able to see
- 27:54Speaker 5: people and enjoy their company. And I think that if
- 27:56Speaker 5: we're all reminded that Christmas isn't necessarily about the stuff
- 28:00Speaker 5: unless your jests, in which case is very important that
- 28:03Speaker 5: the stuff is still there. But I think it's really
- 28:05Speaker 5: important to remember that if it's not in your budget,
- 28:08Speaker 5: I think that's okay to a really beautiful card or
- 28:10Speaker 5: a homemade present, or some cookies or something that you've made,
- 28:14Speaker 5: or even just negotiating not to have any gifts that
- 28:16Speaker 5: year is also a really beautiful present because from my perspective,
- 28:19Speaker 5: I'd much prefer to say you to you. Jess, Hey,
- 28:21Speaker 5: I just don't have it in my budget for Christmas,
- 28:23Speaker 5: but I'd still love to hang out. Is much better
- 28:25Speaker 5: than avoiding someone completely and not enjoying their festive season
- 28:29Speaker 5: at all because you're worried about them expecting a gift
- 28:31Speaker 5: from you, because I promise no one does.
- 28:33Speaker 4: No And as someone who is like I would say
- 28:36Speaker 4: the Queen of Christmas, we're gonna call myself a Queen
- 28:38Speaker 4: of Christmas.
- 28:39Speaker 1: I love Christmas, or you the Queen of Christmas. I
- 28:41Speaker 1: love giving gifts.
- 28:42Speaker 4: I would not be even one tiny little drop of
- 28:45Speaker 4: offended if someone said that to me, And I think,
- 28:47Speaker 4: like that's a shining example, like if you love Christmas
- 28:50Speaker 4: as much as me, and I would honestly really appreciate
- 28:53Speaker 4: someone being so honest with me. I don't want anyone
- 28:56Speaker 4: to ever feel afraid about having those conversations with people,
- 28:58Speaker 4: because I like, no one will mind.
- 29:01Speaker 1: The best gift you can give people is your love.
- 29:03Speaker 1: And exactly it sounds lame, but it's so true.
- 29:06Speaker 5: And like just I think I'm speaking on your behalf here,
- 29:09Speaker 5: but I can't imagine if I gave you a gift
- 29:12Speaker 5: and then later said like, oh, I'm really broker, I'm
- 29:14Speaker 5: really struggling, how guilty you'd feel like you wouldn't feel
- 29:17Speaker 5: good about that. Just don't do it. Don't stretch yourself
- 29:19Speaker 5: beyond what you need to this Christmas, and to be honest,
- 29:23Speaker 5: it's about the attention that you give people. But that's
- 29:25Speaker 5: probably a really good place to leave it, mister SCRICI.
- 29:28Speaker 1: I think so.
