- 0:08It's the King Consultant podcast where we're turning up the heat
- 0:11on all things kink and dating, relationships and pop culture.
- 0:14So close the door, plug in your headphones, and let's get down
- 0:17to it. Hello and welcome to this week's
- 0:24episode of The King Consultant. I am here in person with now
- 0:27what I'd consider good friend Aubrey Austin.
- 0:29What are your accolades again? I know you're doing a crunchy
- 0:32degree at NYU, but in relational psychology and philosophy.
- 0:36Hey, you got it. Nice.
- 0:38Very good. Tell me, Aubrey, what are we
- 0:40talking about? Let's.
- 0:41Talk about it. So I study relational psychology
- 0:44and philosophy, and part of that is establishing how we build
- 0:47trust and safety in relationships, both
- 0:49psychologically and somatically. So a lot of my research has to
- 0:52do with EDSM is building that practice and looking at the
- 0:55relational laboratory that it creates.
- 0:57So how people are able to explore fantasy, desire, one
- 1:01team in general, and how we're framing that in language and
- 1:04physically with each other. What a coincidence.
- 1:06These are all of my favorite topics and I'm yeah, I'm so glad
- 1:10to be speaking now to an expert on it from a different side.
- 1:13I think I have the feelings down, the practice down, but the
- 1:16psychology of it is a little bit, I mean, I work with a lot
- 1:19of clients on it, but the official like what has been
- 1:22studied, I have, I've not done that so much so.
- 1:24Let's talk about it. Now you talk a lot about Freud.
- 1:27Can I say I love Freud? This is kind of controversial.
- 1:30This is the topic, right? What?
- 1:31So Freud, for his time, was actually quite progressive.
- 1:35OK, I believe he was progressive, but was he
- 1:37progressively wrong? Like Andrew Tate's progressive,
- 1:40but like a. Fantastic one, yes, and a lot of
- 1:45the things that Freud did would not fly now hitting on your
- 1:49clients, sleeping with your clients, Sure, go for it.
- 1:52All things that also still happen now though.
- 1:54True. I'm not sleeping with my
- 1:56clients. I'm just saying these things
- 1:57happen. Now they're more frowned upon,
- 1:59society at large. But we look at this, I look a
- 2:02lot at Freud and fantasy and I think the stuff that Freud, he
- 2:06was the initial thought leader in this process.
- 2:08And I think there's still value to that because he in fantasy
- 2:11and sexual fantasy, sexual fantasy, but.
- 2:13When I hear Freud, let's just get this out of the gate.
- 2:16Didn't you think all men were obsessed with their mothers and
- 2:18women were obsessed with Dicks? Yep.
- 2:19And in my experience of experiencing many men, I was
- 2:23never obsessed with a Dick. So there were some really good
- 2:25Dicks. Like, I'll be honest.
- 2:26But like, that's the point. Like, yeah, some stood out, but
- 2:28some were just boring. And then I don't meet a lot of
- 2:31men who are obsessed with their mothers.
- 2:33Although when you talk to a man about what he's looking for in a
- 2:36wife, it is very much if he liked his mother, it's what he
- 2:39was looking for. And then I had an ex who loved
- 2:42that I was Kirby and had ample breasts because his mother was
- 2:46very thin, rail thin and he just feuds her as not a caring woman.
- 2:50Interesting as well. Want to know something even more
- 2:52interesting? When I wanted a breast reduction
- 2:54we had to go to therapy together and this all came out in therapy
- 2:57because he didn't want me to get 1.
- 2:58And I was like OK I understand this is scary.
- 3:01I'm going in for surgery to modify how I look.
- 3:03Empathy. Yeah.
- 3:04Let's go talk to my therapist so we can have a more fair
- 3:07conversation. Right.
- 3:08And that's when I found out that the reason he liked women with
- 3:10bigger breasts is because his mother had none.
- 3:12And he viewed women with the bigger breasts is more caring.
- 3:15Fucking mind blowing, right? Fascinating.
- 3:17OK, so now I'm like, all right, Freud, maybe you have some.
- 3:20And I was going to say Freud would affirm your experience of
- 3:23saying, well, wait a second, I am not obsessed with all this.
- 3:26This doesn't come to fruition for me because it's unconscious.
- 3:30Oh, you wouldn't have awareness of it.
- 3:31But he would say that subtly. There's something you are not
- 3:34recognizing in the subconscious that is driving you to behave in
- 3:37the way that you. Do with men's Dicks.
- 3:39I'm want to explore this because I'm like I hide nothing from
- 3:42anyone, especially myself right. I would say I sit next to you
- 3:46and I just feel my guts about my family.
- 3:48I love it I'm here to receive. I mean I feel like I have daddy
- 3:51issues, but that has nothing to do with a cock.
- 3:54My daddy issues are abandonment of him not being there once I
- 3:57hit a certain age. How does that relate?
- 3:59That's the thing, not everyone has that experience, whereas
- 4:02everyone has a mother, whether or not they an experience with
- 4:04it. You know what?
- 4:05Actually, just fuck Freud. Because the man gets to be
- 4:07obsessed with his mother, the woman has to be obsessed with
- 4:09the Dick. Fuck you, Freud.
- 4:11All right, I feel better about this conversation already, OK.
- 4:14OK, personal questions. What would you want to feel in
- 4:17that relationship with your father?
- 4:19Presence, him being there and accepting me no matter what,
- 4:22whether I'm successful or not. It came down to success and
- 4:25accomplishment, and I would want to be accepted whether I had
- 4:28those accolades or not. How do you want to be received
- 4:31by a Dom? Honestly, it's really funny.
- 4:33If you had just said a man, I probably could have answered it.
- 4:35But a Dom feels so vulnerable. I want to be received
- 4:39ironically. I want a Dom to see in me that I
- 4:41could be better and do better and pull and push it out of me.
- 4:45Do you know what I mean? Get more from me.
- 4:47So the opposite of what I want just full acceptance from my
- 4:50dad. I want a Dom to probably play
- 4:52the role like definitely more of like be better.
- 4:55I know you can be better. To get you to that state where
- 4:58you are then worthy of acceptance.
- 5:00Yeah, I know these. It's how we all.
- 5:02No, I know these things. I don't like to sing them out.
- 5:05No one does. That's not the fun part, yeah.
- 5:09The fun part is the fantasy. Right.
- 5:11And so that's where we have that intellectual playground.
- 5:14And actually I want to take the word intellectual out of it.
- 5:17It can be a playground for Eroticism and that is a place
- 5:20for us to leave the mind behind in a lot of times and move into
- 5:24body and soul. This is why kink is so much
- 5:28easier for me of I have no problem stepping into that,
- 5:31leaving it behind and exploring it and understanding it.
- 5:34It is that previous point of what am I actually trying to
- 5:37achieve by finding a Dom? And it's harder to do that self
- 5:41exploration because it's hard. Yeah, it hurts to say it out
- 5:44loud. And I can ask the questions.
- 5:45I can even ask myself the questions, but to be faced with
- 5:48really showing up, honestly, that's hard work.
- 5:51Yeah. How?
- 5:52Who does it for you? As in a person or.
- 5:54Yeah, no feeling in The Who draws it out of you?
- 5:56How do you face yourself and get these answers?
- 5:58I would I terrible. We lean into the chase, OK.
- 6:01I find myself attracted to dynamics in which I find that
- 6:05challenge because I feel like it gives me something to meet.
- 6:09Where do you think that comes from?
- 6:10Oh, definitely childhood. But this is.
- 6:13Yeah. But it's kind of a similar
- 6:15situation to you because I had very affirming parents.
- 6:18Oh, who said we don't care what grades you get, we just know
- 6:21you're trying your best. And I from a young age was an
- 6:24incredibly high achiever, constantly striving to be best
- 6:27of the best, top of the class, straight A's, all the things.
- 6:29And so then when I in my relationships and what I'm
- 6:32attracted to, I want someone who's constantly trying to raise
- 6:35the bar higher and higher and higher because that's something
- 6:39that I felt like I needed to push myself to do.
- 6:41And so now what's erotic for me is outsource that to someone
- 6:46else and make me chase after that.
- 6:48Oh damn, that sounds like a lot of work.
- 6:50That sounds so much. That sounds like so much more
- 6:53work. Than I'm working overtime.
- 6:54Yeah, for real. OK.
- 6:56And so something I'm trying to navigate now is realizing in my
- 7:00romantic or emotional relationships, maybe this isn't
- 7:03the most beneficial dynamic for me, but what does that look like
- 7:07for me to play out in fantasy or in power exchange?
- 7:11And that's something that could be fun to tap into.
- 7:13I like to tap into the dark places and bring them out and
- 7:16play with them. It is my favorite thing to do.
- 7:18Yeah, because I feel like I can own it.
- 7:20And I've had multiple experiences.
- 7:21I've been right about some of them where I have jealousy or
- 7:24self doubt or I feel how often am I talking about my weight and
- 7:28my appearance and I feel like, and I can pull those out and
- 7:30play with them in this context. It becomes more palatable
- 7:34outside of the context. Yeah, like in my real life, it's
- 7:36healing. Can I ask how jealousy shows up
- 7:40for you and what that does to you?
- 7:42If it's a turn on, turn off like how you respond to.
- 7:45It oh, I get jealous and it just it lights up that part of me
- 7:48that wants to chase and get attention and win.
- 7:51I think that the jealousy pieces, I want all of the
- 7:53attention if the attention is anywhere else but me, I I take
- 7:57it as a personal slight on me like as it like kind of like I'm
- 8:01not enough, but also I just have to try harder like it all.
- 8:05See why we're friends? No for real though, the person
- 8:10that I'm going after doesn't even need to be a high achiever
- 8:14or anything like that, I just need to want their attention for
- 8:16one reason or another. What the real mind fuck?
- 8:19The worst thing that could possibly happen to me is
- 8:22somebody wanting me back because then I'm done.
- 8:24I'm out. No, I say that facetiously that
- 8:27that was like me 10 years ago. Me now is like, no, meet me
- 8:30where I'm at. Please come find me.
- 8:32Let's have fun together and be 1.
- 8:34And that's why I think I've had in the past year since my
- 8:37breakup, I've had some of the best sexual experiences of my
- 8:39life because I'm looking for someone who's showing up and
- 8:42then we can have fun together. 10 years ago, especially before
- 8:45I met my ex, that was my pattern.
- 8:47God forbid someone liked me back.
- 8:49Terrifying. It was done.
- 8:51She's healed now. Yeah, I wish.
- 8:53I wish I could say that I'm healing every day, but I will
- 8:55say that what I accept in relationships is very different
- 8:58now. Yeah.
- 8:58Like, I'm willing to call out what I see.
- 9:01We famously, unfortunately, I feel bad for my podcast
- 9:04listeners even having to hear this word.
- 9:06We famously broke through the barrier of the German.
- 9:08We worked past where our needs were not being met.
- 9:11And like, I moved on from it slowly, you know?
- 9:14But like, I moved on once I realized, OK, I'm never gonna be
- 9:17met here. There's no point in chasing.
- 9:20Something I would love to talk about here and something you
- 9:23know I'm exploring and it sounds like you've undergone in your
- 9:26relational journey, is the power of honesty both in relationships
- 9:30and in sexuality. So let's start with the the fun
- 9:33and kinky. How important is it to be honest
- 9:36about desire? That's like #1 with kink, I
- 9:38think honesty about desire is important no matter what,
- 9:41because there's a core part of your being that needs to be
- 9:43seen, and we do that through desire.
- 9:45That's my belief. In a lot of ways, If you're not
- 9:48being honest, there is some shame there, and shame is really
- 9:52dangerous for relationships. So you have to think in life,
- 9:55why have you not been honest in general?
- 9:57Like what are the reasons? It's because you're scared.
- 9:59You feel ashamed of maybe something you've done.
- 10:01There's guilt. So I think the antidote to shame
- 10:03is bringing it out in the open and being totally honest about
- 10:06it. Non negotiable, 100% honesty.
- 10:08You need to be, or else you run the risk of never being met,
- 10:12never being seen. And a lot of the work that I do
- 10:14is with self, selfhood and integrating the unconscious and
- 10:18what we haven't processed yet to our personhood.
- 10:21And what I study in relational psychology is the self quote, UN
- 10:25quote. This is very theoretical and
- 10:26philosophical, just giving you a warning.
- 10:28But that self doesn't exist outside of the relational
- 10:31context. There is the I, which is
- 10:34biological, who we are as an individual being.
- 10:37And then there's the me, and that's the integrated self who
- 10:40you are seeing, how the parts of me that you affirm, the parts of
- 10:44you that you reject. And all of your responses and
- 10:47how we relate in our relational environment integrate into how I
- 10:50see myself. And so that's the construction
- 10:52of the quote UN quote self. And I think that's so
- 10:55interesting we apply to the context of desire and the sexual
- 10:59self on if you are with a partner who continually where
- 11:02there is shame in that relationship or denies a fantasy
- 11:07or a desire and what that can do for selfhood.
- 11:11Yeah. And so I'm curious on you on how
- 11:13you see that with the people that you work with or working
- 11:17through that, how do we begin that process of integration?
- 11:20That is where I have to go 10 steps back from where you even
- 11:23just started of talking to the individuals themselves and
- 11:26understanding. Well, usually I work with one
- 11:29person who's kinky and the other person who is not.
- 11:31But the difference is they're at least curious or open or they
- 11:33want to learn more. Yeah.
- 11:34So for the kinky person, I get to their core desire because
- 11:37what I really need to talk to the non kinky person is to
- 11:39understand what is your core desire?
- 11:41Please don't tell me you want a chastity K John.
- 11:43I mean, yes, please tell me you want a chastity K John.
- 11:45But I need to understand what that gives you.
- 11:47What are you feeling when you have a chastity kage on?
- 11:50Is it freedom? Is it safety?
- 11:52So that when I work with you and your partner, I can explain,
- 11:55point to your partner, what you want isn't just the chastity
- 11:59device. You want the feeling of freedom,
- 12:02punishment, safety, attention. And then we can start focusing
- 12:06on the feeling. This is just so core part of the
- 12:09work. I'm getting to the answer, OK.
- 12:11We focus on the feeling that they're trying to achieve
- 12:14because it's relatable. All of that is about relation to
- 12:16each other, whether it's shame or not.
- 12:18So I need to make this the kinky partner partner relatable with
- 12:23something that's not always quote, UN quote, relatable.
- 12:26Yeah. OK.
- 12:26So then I talk to the other partner and I start to
- 12:28understand their own desires, their confusion, their
- 12:31hesitation, where they're shaming might be coming from if
- 12:35they have shamed the kinky partner.
- 12:37And I start to breakdown. I breakdown everyone's thought
- 12:39process so that it's like, OK, let's get to the core of what
- 12:42this is. And for the person who might
- 12:43accidentally be shaming their partner, just not interested,
- 12:46what's their core belief? Why are they not willing to
- 12:48explore this? And then I throw all of that
- 12:51information away for just a half a session.
- 12:53I say, OK, now talk to me about your own.
- 12:55And I want to get deep on them telling me about their fantasies
- 12:58as opposed to just telling me like the psychological breakdown
- 13:01of it. I want people to get excited so
- 13:03that we can start to build up right from there.
- 13:05OK, So what we've done then is we've kind of like deconstructed
- 13:09where the core of their shame is their shaming, their desire.
- 13:13And then we build up from there by making each other relatable.
- 13:16And that is how you're beginning to repair self because you're
- 13:20teaching the others like, OK, husband, who wants chastity.
- 13:23Here's where you're at. And here's what your wife is
- 13:25seeing. But like, let's reintegrate who
- 13:28you are and what you're actually asking for.
- 13:29Yeah, wife, I understand this is all new and surprising to you.
- 13:33I understand why that might be something that you're
- 13:35embarrassed about too, and maybe projecting that on to the
- 13:38person. But let's get down to why you
- 13:40feel that way about things. And now that we understand that,
- 13:43maybe there's something you're excited about exploring and it's
- 13:45almost, it's helpful to do it for someone else.
- 13:47It's like helpful to think about someone else's psychology and
- 13:51why you're. It's easier to point to someone
- 13:52else and say I'm judging that because I feel XY and Z way.
- 13:55Then these are my desires and I'm judging it because I feel XY
- 13:57and Z way. Does that make sense?
- 13:59Yeah, I know. I'm with you.
- 14:00OK, OK, I struggle sometimes to like really break it down, but
- 14:03this is something that happens over four or five sessions with
- 14:06people. But it's all with the goal of
- 14:08like, how do I help these two people relate to each other?
- 14:10And then it allows for a lot more self acceptance and then
- 14:13acceptance of the dynamic that they want in their relationship.
- 14:16If you've ever thought about doing what I do, becoming a
- 14:19certified Sex and Relationship coach, this is your sign.

- 14:57struggling to be honest with themselves of denying desire,
- 15:00fantasy, the forbidden? That is 1 where I put in extra
- 15:04work. So what you're describing is
- 15:06normally in my experience, I will have a kinky client come to
- 15:10me and they'll say I really want to have this with my partner.
- 15:13And then when I start to work with the partner, remember the
- 15:15part where I said I throw it all away and ask what their desires
- 15:18are. I sometimes have to do two or
- 15:20three sessions specifically focused on what are your desires
- 15:23and helping populate the menu for them to even light up at one
- 15:27of these options. So my approach to that was
- 15:30they're struggling themselves is I give them options and I'm
- 15:33like, what sounds interesting? My favorite thing to do is if
- 15:35someone's really turned off by something, I was like, what
- 15:37sounds most disgusting? What's the most disturbing so
- 15:40that I start getting someone to open up about their feelings one
- 15:44way or another. If you think diaper play is
- 15:47absolutely disgusting and many people do, I'm not one of those
- 15:50people. Tell me why.
- 15:51What makes you uncomfortable about it?
- 15:52Let's fucking go. So good.
- 15:54And then I let them just like really air out all their disgust
- 15:57and then we pare it down. So what's slightly less
- 15:59disgusting, right? Work our way back.
- 16:01So like what I like, I'm a huge fan of working backwards.
- 16:04So like when someone is struggling with it, I'm like,
- 16:07all right, let's go far into the spectrum.
- 16:09How does that make you feel? Uncomfortable, gross, not safe
- 16:13in my own body. And it's like, why?
- 16:15And then like we work back to what would make you feel safe.
- 16:17So sometimes I like to go let the pendulum swing the other
- 16:20direction. I love what you said about what
- 16:21does that feel like in my body because so many people never
- 16:25have the opportunity, first of all, to pause and reflect on
- 16:28that question, but also stop and think, wait, what does a yes
- 16:32feel like in my body? What does a no feel like in my
- 16:35body? Where do I hold tension
- 16:38surrounding this thought? Where do I open up surrounding
- 16:41this thought And the stomatic component of it is something
- 16:44that hasn't been lost. If you look to indigenous ways
- 16:48of thoughts or throughout history so ingrained into how we
- 16:52functioned as societies, as communities.
- 16:54Amanda and I spent a lot of time today talking about what it's
- 16:57like living in America and New York and the the lack of
- 17:00community that we have in a lot of places.
- 17:03I'm based in Brooklyn now and experiencing that myself.
- 17:07How we've become so divorced so matically from ourselves, but
- 17:11also community at large that we've lost that connection of
- 17:15what do these things actually feel like and what does good
- 17:19embodiment feel like to me? With good reason, like you have
- 17:22to sort of shut off. Do you think you'd feel very
- 17:25embodied if you were walking into New York City every day
- 17:28with that, like, level of vulnerability?
- 17:30We're actually being asked to do gymnastics of like, OK, out in
- 17:34the world, hold yourself together, be safe.
- 17:36Survive. Survive literally now come into
- 17:39intimacy and let everything like be as honest as you possibly
- 17:43can. Let that vulnerability out.
- 17:45And that is in a direct opposition of what you've had to
- 17:47do for 14 hours outside. Exactly.
- 17:49It's so tough. And it's interesting you
- 17:51mentioned Indigenous and older other cultures where it's less
- 17:54ingrained that you have to shut that part down, right to Stacy.
- 17:57But it is true, as much as I love to be in my body at all
- 18:00times, when I'm on the subway, I'm not on.
- 18:03I am not in my body. I am on defense motive.
- 18:06I try and create like an invisible shield around me to
- 18:09protect my energy. Yeah, on the subway because
- 18:12that's something that I believe works and helps me at least
- 18:14mentally. It's hard then to come back into
- 18:17a relationship and feel as close as we can while having
- 18:20experienced that outside. So everyone knows I spend a lot
- 18:24of time in New York when I can, but I'm a softer person in Vegas
- 18:28and I feel the change when I come to New York.
- 18:30Wow, I know I'm friendlier. I want to have conversations
- 18:33with you. I want that in New York, but
- 18:35it's not the vibe. And it also it doesn't feel safe
- 18:37to do it, not physically safe. I'm not talking about the
- 18:40dangers or crime or anything. I just mean that like, people
- 18:42are busy. The rejection is going to be
- 18:44there. The I don't have time for this
- 18:46conversation. So I mean, that's fine, but it's
- 18:49the difference. Fine.
- 18:50You experienced that softness or that transition immediately when
- 18:54you showed up in Vegas? Or did it take time?
- 18:56Oh, great question. No, I was met with it.
- 18:58I would go to a Starbucks and the person serving and we didn't
- 19:01have 40 orders after me, so they could literally talk to me.
- 19:05And that's disarming. You're like, oh, oh, this is a
- 19:08space where we can have a conversation.
- 19:10Now, I know my baristas by name. They know me like, it's good
- 19:15morning, Molly, you know, how's it going?
- 19:17I know her name. Like, the way that New York
- 19:19doesn't allow for that. So it was a quick transition,
- 19:22not immediate, but it started with me having this knowledge
- 19:26that these people want to talk to me.
- 19:28They want their day to go a little bit faster, and they
- 19:30don't have enough customers to make their day go faster.
- 19:32They need to have interaction, right?
- 19:34And then I met them where they were at, and it became a very
- 19:37pleasant exchange. That's just one example.
- 19:39Right. But I'm sure it integrates into
- 19:40so many aspects of your life there.
- 19:43Oh yeah, just the friendships, the closeness, the ease of, hey,
- 19:48do you want to meet up tonight? It's it's a different world.
- 19:50So much is situational and also relational.
- 19:54Yeah. Situational is key though yeah I
- 19:58need to take a second to talk about something I never thought
- 20:00would make me this excited Lube. I've been doing a lot more
- 20:03personal exploration lately and when you're playing with toys
- 20:06that need a flared base, a good Lube is essential because your
- 20:08body's not going to lubricate itself back there no matter how
- 20:11much fun you're having. My go to has always been
- 20:13silicone because it lasts longer than water based lubes and it
- 20:17feels smoother overall. But Lube life's ultra slick
- 20:20thick silicone Lube is next level.
- 20:23It's got this creamy texture that melts into your skin
- 20:25without disappearing, so it stays perfectly slick.
- 20:27It's the. Smoothest loop I've ever used.
- 20:29Soft, rich and makes everything glide effortlessly.
- 20:33So whether you're solo, partnered, or somewhere
- 20:35deliciously in between, trust me, you're going to want this on
- 20:38your night stand. Check out Lube Life Ultra slick
- 20:40thick silicone Lube. Link is in the show notes.
- 20:43That was a great point. What else does I love?
- 20:46I love that she came with a list and I was like check what's up?
- 20:50Checking it twice. What else is on your?
- 20:52List we talk about, I wanted to talk about performativity and
- 20:55sexuality because that's a question that I have coming up a
- 20:58lot in my research because from the perspective of selfhood,
- 21:01what's erasing the self versus what is giving you the
- 21:04opportunity to expand it. So the specific case that I was
- 21:08thinking about, say someone says they are capital S submissive
- 21:13typically do not floor outside of that role.
- 21:15They meet someone, fall in love, Oh no their partner's also a
- 21:19sub. They need to snap into more of
- 21:22the role of the switch or suddenly have to Dom more and
- 21:25that feels outside. Of who they are, right yeah.
- 21:28I also work with couples who have this and I actually one of
- 21:32the tactics I guess I used and I learned this from a polyamory
- 21:36coach was week on week off. You get a week where you're the
- 21:40sub and a week where they're the sub.
- 21:42So no one's needs are being met 20, 47, but you're meeting each
- 21:45other. OK, but to answer your first
- 21:47question, authenticity, right? You cannot pretend to be
- 21:51dominant if you are submissive. But what you can do, and I'm a
- 21:54firm believer in this, is everyone has a little switch in
- 21:56them, even just maybe a 1%, but the switching might not actually
- 22:00be psychological. It might be physical that they
- 22:02can switch. You need to tap into the energy.
- 22:05I believe you can connect with your dominant energy.
- 22:06You can connect with your submissive energy.
- 22:08It's a practice. It's like reprogramming neural
- 22:10pathways. When you have a self belief, you
- 22:12have to come up with new ones and kind of dig that road for
- 22:16yourself. So you your brain goes a
- 22:17different positive way. I talk about that as tapping
- 22:20into your dominant energy and I work people through.
- 22:23Let's talk about when you feel most dominant, when do you feel
- 22:26most yourself and in charge? And I try and look for that
- 22:29thread to pull on where I'm like, OK, this is a dominant
- 22:32path we can go down, let's go. But I haven't talked to the
- 22:35entire world. But in my experience, I can find
- 22:38it with every single person that I've spoken with so far.
- 22:40However, I like building the fact that I have kinky.
- 22:44I have an Instagram profile that's specific about kink.
- 22:47If you find me that way in the 1st place, if you I'm called the
- 22:49King consultant. Yes, I'm Amanda Dames Calm.
- 22:51But most people who find me are already a little bit kinky.
- 22:54So I'm self selecting a self selecting.
- 22:57Yeah. However, I have never spoken to
- 22:59someone who's like, no, I really can't do it.
- 23:01I've heard of these people, but I also just believe they don't
- 23:04feel safe and exploring another side.
- 23:05When I've run into that. If I can't find that thread, I
- 23:08look at where there's why is submissions such a part of their
- 23:11identity. I try and discover why they feel
- 23:13safe in submission, to understand where can we find
- 23:17them feeling safety and dominance.
- 23:19However, at no point do I ever force anyone to do something
- 23:22they don't want to do. The idea is, do you want to show
- 23:25up for your partner in this way? Do you have the capacity to show
- 23:28up? We start there.
- 23:30I'm not in the business of forcing people to be kinky.
- 23:32I do think most people are kinky, though.
- 23:34And then you just have to figure out, yeah, like.
- 23:36Everybody's got something. Everyone, it's like where's that
- 23:38desire coming from? To your point though,
- 23:40authenticity and I believe it's doable.
- 23:42It's just about leaning in and and finding a cheat cheat way to
- 23:45get into that energy for yourself.
- 23:47Do you feel you're dominant or submissive?
- 23:49Revealing. I mean, normally you switch.
- 23:52Switch and you're switchy. In your whole.
- 23:54Life. Yes, right.
- 23:55So that shows up for me is in. I don't have a gender
- 23:59preference. You really?
- 24:00Don't. I really don't, no.
- 24:02And if you look at the people I have dated and partnerships with
- 24:07range in every single possible way.
- 24:11I I can attest to this. You've told me about your
- 24:13partners. It really.
- 24:14Was arranged and how I meet that person is so dependent on our
- 24:19dynamic, and then how I show up in my sexual self is entirely
- 24:23dependent on what that connection looks like.
- 24:25Question for you though, OK, I understand that look and gender
- 24:29of a person like that doesn't matter, but what I am going to
- 24:31ask is are you stepping into it and how much of this is possibly
- 24:35people policing of what you think they need and then
- 24:37stepping into that? Role such a great question and
- 24:39that's why I asked you about the what do you do with the
- 24:42performativity aspect of it because I was actually just
- 24:45talking about a friend with this.
- 24:46We are both chronic people pleasers and how much of this is
- 24:50actually people pleasing? And that was something that I
- 24:53had to really step back and consider for myself of wait a
- 24:56second, do I actually want this? And I feel like when I'm able to
- 25:00truly feel grounded in that answer is when I have been with
- 25:04a partner for a while and you get to that point where you have
- 25:07to unlearn the sexual scripts of this is what I like.
- 25:10This is what we do because things get to that point of, oh,
- 25:14this is the script that we've been playing out for a certain
- 25:16amount of time, But wait a second.
- 25:18I feel a resistance to this in some type of way.
- 25:21And to keep that spark alive, you first have to go within
- 25:24yourself and say, wait a second, what do I actually want to
- 25:27nurture here? Is this script of what we've
- 25:29been doing actually serving me, first of all, But us, do you
- 25:33like this or? Yeah.
- 25:34Are you still having fun here? Yeah.
- 25:36And then talking about that. And we're taught not to serve
- 25:39ourselves first. Yes, it's just like I and I
- 25:41don't know if that's a purely woman experience or we're to be
- 25:44kind and to care about everyone else religiously.
- 25:46We're taught to think about other people before we think
- 25:49about ourselves. Yeah, sorry.
- 25:50Like I feel like we're bringing everyone in and halfway through
- 25:52the conversation, we spent a large part of today talking
- 25:54about religion. We did and just the effects it's
- 25:56had on us. It's easy to think that we're
- 25:59doing good, right, by serving everyone else and that we're
- 26:01being selfish by serving ourselves.
- 26:03I rarely ask, is this serving me?
- 26:05I'm fortunate enough that after many years, I like, I just know
- 26:08what is serving me. But like, it's OK, It takes time
- 26:10because I remember feeling a lot of shame about feeling selfish.
- 26:14That's Yep, it's like, oh, M is what I'm doing selfish?
- 26:18Even as a submissive, I feel guilt for the focus having to be
- 26:22on me. In fact, one of the reasons I
- 26:24don't think I brat and I try and be a good girl is like, oh,
- 26:26bratting would inconvenience somebody.
- 26:28I can't do that. Yeah be rude.
- 26:31I can brat from time to time but I'm not a brat cuz I'm like the
- 26:34significant inconvenience I would be cannot play that role.
- 26:37So interesting isn't it? Like that's how I know I'm a
- 26:40good girl cuz I'm like no I feel bad being so good.
- 26:43No but. Little praise, cake.
- 26:45No, but that's the other thing. I don't even fully have a praise
- 26:47cake. Like when I get good girl, I'm
- 26:49like, was I good enough? Ohh you just want to be a high
- 26:51achiever. Yeah, like degrade me.
- 26:53Yeah, you, but you. Ohhh yeah, I.
- 26:56Love that That's nuance, Amanda. I know, yeah.
- 26:59I'm a difficulty. Like, see, I I can't afford to
- 27:02be bratty. I am already difficult enough.
- 27:04No, that's fair. But I'm not.
- 27:06But like, I am, you know, that's how I see it.
- 27:08It's like, oh, I already need so much.
- 27:10What is the most authentic version of mine?
- 27:12And so that wouldn't be pleasurable to you necessarily
- 27:14to be bratty because then you're just so concerned about the
- 27:17inconvenience that you're providing to the other.
- 27:18Yes, and it's a fear of will they leave me?
- 27:20That'd be too annoying. Root fear got Hats off to the
- 27:24brats out there. Out there, maybe living my
- 27:26dream. It's funny because I actually as
- 27:29when I top, I enjoy playing with brats because it gives me this
- 27:31opportunity. I know they're not going
- 27:33anywhere. They're bratting for a reason.
- 27:35I get to brat back, yeah, and that's a lot of fun.
- 27:37That's such a fun springboard. Yeah, It's like, oh, this is
- 27:39where I get the banter in. Yeah, because I don't want to
- 27:42get the banter in when like I'm bent over and being hit with an
- 27:45implement. Like I'm not looking for more
- 27:47banter, I'm looking for it to stop.
- 27:48When you're topping, is that purely within the context of
- 27:51play? Yes see, but it could be a
- 27:53difference. Here's the when I Dom sometimes,
- 27:56like I had a sub lately last year, early this year, one of
- 27:59the things I so enjoyed was helping him better his life.
- 28:02I cannot tell you how many Subs have LinkedIn profiles because I
- 28:06was like, you are, you can achieve more, but that's like
- 28:09that's my ingrained thing of success.
- 28:11Looks a certain type of way. Things look a certain type of
- 28:13way. And maybe that's not what they
- 28:15want. I mean, oftentimes they do want
- 28:16something that I'm like, you know what would help you this?
- 28:18But at the end of the day, that is the psychology of kink.
- 28:22Don't get me wrong, it can also be hey, I want to try handcuffs.
- 28:25This is fun, yes, but the deep paper layers to this are
- 28:29integrating the part, the unconscious parts of us that we
- 28:33have yet to admit to ourselves. Yes, 100%.
- 28:36And that that is with the goal of burying ourselves, showing up
- 28:40as a fuller version of ourselves in this world.
- 28:42And trust me, we don't have to make it that deep if you don't
- 28:45want to, no. You don't, but that's so true.
- 28:48There's so much fun and play and amazing, wonderful aspects that
- 28:53you don't have to use this as therapy.
- 28:55And that's something actually controversial that I'm studying
- 28:57now is there is so much power to this.
- 28:59Should we start looking at this as a therapeutic modality, which
- 29:03is such a controversial conversation that we need a
- 29:05whole other episode in and we're not going to fully die?
- 29:09It is controversial because for me I focus so much on the desire
- 29:12of it and just the enjoyment of it and how a couple can
- 29:15integrate it. But yes, maybe I just.
- 29:17There's deep healing work that can be done there.
- 29:19And I have definitely done it. I've grown with people in it.
- 29:22Yeah. It's just how honestly it's how
- 29:25do you bottle that? Right.
- 29:26Because we have cognitive behavioral therapy.
- 29:28I have to say that out loud because if I say CBD CBT on my
- 29:31podcast, it's also cock and bald for sure.
- 29:34It's so easily, yes, so easily confused.
- 29:36I get it. So there is, there are different
- 29:39modalities of therapy. There's just not enough
- 29:41structure around BDSM and kink. And that's I think where I get
- 29:45hung up on it. Always say kink is like
- 29:48religion. In my experience, kink and BDSM
- 29:50is like religion. There are a lot of educators out
- 29:52there and there are a lot of us out there talking about it and
- 29:54people follow certain people and it's almost like a dogma or a
- 29:58religion. I recently saw someone say Dom's
- 30:00can't be brats. These titles have meanings and a
- 30:02Princess is this and and it's not a creator.
- 30:04I have any like feeling one where in fact I follow him
- 30:06because I'm like, what are you going to say today?
- 30:08Like I want to hear your strong viewpoint.
- 30:09Bring it on. I might not agree with it.
- 30:11I'm not going to fight it because I'm like, that's his
- 30:13viewpoint. I have my own viewpoints of
- 30:15titles, roles, all of this stuff.
- 30:17And it's almost just like Christianity.
- 30:19There's multiple different there's Catholics, there's
- 30:21whatever you might be. There's Episcopalian, there's.
- 30:23Raised Protestant, I don't know what the hell I am now.
- 30:25Lutheran Like there's all of these things and they're all
- 30:27slightly, they're mostly the same, same generalization, but
- 30:31the individual things have some very specific beliefs that are
- 30:34different. I actually view kink and BDSM as
- 30:36the same. It's like we're not all, we're
- 30:38all just marching to the beat of our own drum.
- 30:40It's sort of similar. Like there's God, there's Jesus,
- 30:42right? There's Mary, there's like the
- 30:44fundamentals, but the details are different.
- 30:46And that's how everyone practices kink.
- 30:48And then I'm like, how do you decide how to do this as a
- 30:50therapy? Where's the measurement?
- 30:52Love that perspective, which I very much align with too.
- 30:55And something I'll, I'll say just speaking from my research
- 30:58is I speak to therapists about this sex positive, kink
- 31:01positive, all the affirming boxes therapists and I speak to
- 31:05pros who are in BDSM. There are the ones who the pro
- 31:10doms say they have a lot of people in their BDSM kink spaces
- 31:15saying, hang on, don't make this quote UN quote normal.
- 31:18We want to keep this taboo and outside of the therapeutic
- 31:22realm. That takes away from what this
- 31:25is. And they don't like that
- 31:27umbrella term. This sounds like gatekeeping to
- 31:29me. That's.
- 31:30It or and then therapists say, no, I understand there's great
- 31:34marriage of this, this can be a healing act, but therapy is
- 31:38already so red taped. I mean, even just if we just
- 31:41look into licensure and where you can and can't practice in
- 31:45certain states that there are very specific rules of what
- 31:48therapy is. There's no realistic way to
- 31:52integrate BDSM as quote, UN quote, you know, an actual
- 31:56therapeutic practice right now. But looking at it from the
- 31:59perspective of no, this can be an outlet to explore yourself
- 32:03physically and emotionally in ways that cognitive behavioral
- 32:07therapy might not necessarily can't.
- 32:09CBT, another way to explore yourself.
- 32:12No. OK, you're really on to
- 32:14something here because that's why I coach.
- 32:16I mean, like I didn't go get a degree to be a therapist, but
- 32:18coaching does allow for some of that integration in what you're
- 32:21describing healing, especially as a Somatica certified coach,
- 32:25there is so much about the embodiment and what's happening
- 32:27in the feeling that we've talked about earlier.
- 32:29But with the king side, the difference is it's not therapy,
- 32:32it's not bottled, it's not regimented.
- 32:34Do you know what I mean? It's really left up to
- 32:36interpretation of what feels right for you.
- 32:39How are you processing it and do you feel safe in it a bigger?
- 32:42Container. Yeah, it's a bigger container.
- 32:44And I think that that's probably where my hang up about therapy
- 32:47comes in because coaching allows for so much connection, right?
- 32:51And that's what therapy doesn't have that level.
- 32:53We talked about this earlier, just the attunement.
- 32:55Yeah, me trying to attune to you in a connected way, body,
- 33:01breath, mind. Yes, that therapy for all the
- 33:04right reasons doesn't cross that boundary.
- 33:07Probably for the safety of everyone involved.
- 33:09Because I was having earlier, if you don't mind me sharing, I was
- 33:12having an anxious moment and I'm like setting up the podcast
- 33:15equipment. I'm thinking, why?
- 33:16How do I feel like this? And then I'm like, oh, I feel
- 33:20you. And then I, we talked it out to
- 33:22be like, OK, this is the feeling.
- 33:24What does that actually mean for you?
- 33:25Because I have my own understanding of those feelings
- 33:28and what causes them. But the feeling was there.
- 33:30It was just the understanding of.
- 33:31That was coming from a cool moment to me because instead of
- 33:34just staying in my anxiety, wait a second, we can talk about
- 33:38this. Because I'm feeling I'm like,
- 33:39whoa, what's happening? It was.
- 33:41Interesting. And that's the relational feel.
- 33:44That's the space that you're Co creating.
- 33:45Yeah. Social baseline theory says we
- 33:48Co regulate each other. And so even if I'm not
- 33:50expressing it, whoa, you're picking up on something, you can
- 33:53still feel exactly what I'm what's running through me.
- 33:56Yes. Not exactly what I'm feeling,
- 33:58but how you are experiencing that, Yeah.
- 34:01And it's only through the somatical work I did and working
- 34:05with different coaches, and I've spent a lot of time working with
- 34:07people who practice different modalities so I can learn for my
- 34:10clients that I've been able to even separate and recognize,
- 34:13Wait, this isn't my feeling. I scan my own body and I'm like,
- 34:16this isn't coming from me, It must be coming from somewhere
- 34:20else. You just happen to be the
- 34:21closest person. But also, we had talked so
- 34:23openly about some deep things. Yeah.
- 34:25And I think that that's another thing.
- 34:27It's taking space. We were so in conversation.
- 34:29I was a tuning and listening. But when we sort of step back
- 34:32from the actual conversation is when I was able to scan my body.
- 34:35Yeah. Because I wasn't up here.
- 34:36I was in my body focusing on something else.
- 34:38And that's the way, like, I picked up an energy and walked
- 34:41away with it for a little bit. And then we came back and
- 34:44processed. Yeah, they're so it's so deep.
- 34:46And that's I think why I'm like, OK, therapy doesn't allow for
- 34:49that, OK. We create these past three hours
- 34:52that we have not shut up during just talking to each other,
- 34:54created our own little relational laboratory here in so
- 34:57many ways. Yeah, we have explored so much.
- 35:01I feel like you have met me in such beautiful ways that I love
- 35:06my therapist to death. But this is also an experience
- 35:09that I feel like allows me to integrate a lot of different
- 35:12parts of myself. I haven't had the opportunity
