Transcript
- 0:28Speaker 1: Simplifying the world of podcasting for you.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Today we are diving in to key decision every podcaster faces, and that's choosing your format.
- 0:38Speaker 1: There are a number of formats you can choose from, each with its own pros and cons, so today I'm gonna break them down for you.
- 0:45Speaker 1: First, we have solo shows.
- 0:48Speaker 1: This is a solo show, or episode, i should say.
- 0:51Speaker 1: In solo shows, it's just you, your microphone and your listeners.
- 0:55Speaker 1: It gives you complete control over your content and can create strong personal connections with your audience.
- 1:01Speaker 1: However, it can also be a bit challenging because you have to carry the entire conversation.
- 1:07Speaker 1: It requires a lot of preparation I can tell you that, and research to ensure each episode is engaging and informative.
- 1:14Speaker 1: I can tell you the solo shows take quite a bit of work, a lot more prep, i think, than the interview shows and an interview show that brings guests on your podcast.
- 1:25Speaker 1: It's a discussion or an interview.
- 1:27Speaker 1: The major benefit here is the diversity of content and perspectives you can offer with your audience.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Plus, having guests can also help grow your listener base as they share their audience with their own networks.
- 1:39Speaker 1: On the flip side, scheduling and preparing for interviews can also be time-consuming and you'll be somewhat dependent on your guests for content and the quality of the episode is also a little bit dependent on your guests.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Now a third episode is like what imperfect marketing is?
- 1:58Speaker 1: right?
- 1:58Speaker 1: I have imperfect marketing briefs, which are solo shows that I choose to have as really short ones, and also interviews.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Right, it gives you the best of both worlds.
- 2:09Speaker 1: It combines the challenges of both formats.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Okay, so you have that balance.
- 2:16Speaker 1: But recording on your own schedule for your solo episodes, as you bulk record, is a really good thing to be able to have, and working in other people's schedules can sometimes be difficult.
- 2:30Speaker 1: So now let's talk about format of audio versus video.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Audio only podcasts are the traditional format.
- 2:36Speaker 1: They're less technically demanding.
- 2:39Speaker 1: They can be consumed anywhere during a commute, at the gym or while cooking dinner.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Video podcasts, on the other hand, can create more engaging experience for your audience.
- 2:48Speaker 1: They can set your expressions, they can see your expressions, they can see your guests and any visual content you might want to share.
- 2:56Speaker 1: But they are harder to produce, depending on how you do them.
- 3:00Speaker 1: They require more resources in terms of equipment and editing.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Plus, they require your audience to be more actively engaged, which can limit when and where they tune in.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Now I'm a big fan of the audio only podcast, and that's why I started imperfect marketing that way, mostly because I didn't want to do my hair for every episode.
- 3:21Speaker 1: But I recently rolled out my YouTube channel and my YouTube channel I really don't.
- 3:27Speaker 1: If you're watching there, i don't really edit the podcast at all.
- 3:30Speaker 1: I have a podcast editor who will edit my interview shows, because those are the key cornerstone content of imperfect marketing, because I want you to learn and hear the opinions of others, because, again, marketing is not a perfect science, right?
- 3:44Speaker 1: So I think it all comes down to what you're willing to invest in it and what you want to put together.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Now, there's no reason you can't have both.
- 3:56Speaker 1: I encourage you to think about having both because, again, you're providing the content that people want to engage with.
- 4:05Speaker 1: So how do you choose?
- 4:06Speaker 1: Well, i want you to consider your resources, your audience, your content.
- 4:12Speaker 1: If you're just starting out and resources are really limited, a solo show audio only podcast might be the way to go.
- 4:20Speaker 1: If you're struggling with ideas and you're worried that things are going to fade quickly and you're gonna suffer from podcast fade, well, that's okay.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Then start with an audio only interview show.
- 4:35Speaker 1: Any of them are just as easy to start.
- 4:39Speaker 1: It just depends on what resources you have and what time you have to invest in this right.
- 4:44Speaker 1: So, again, as you grow and gain more resources.
- 4:49Speaker 1: On, episode 100 is when I started roll sorry, 101 is when I started rolling out the video podcasts.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Didn't do it for the first 100 episodes.
- 4:59Speaker 1: That's okay, right, because I like to read my brief scripts, because I actually script them out.
- 5:05Speaker 1: But how do you choose?
- 5:06Speaker 1: Okay?
- 5:07Speaker 1: so again, i want you to think about the time and effort that you have and what your appetite is for being on screen versus audio only.
- 5:15Speaker 1: The bottom line is choose a format that suits your strengths, your content and your audience.
- 5:23Speaker 1: Your audience is at the heart of everything that you do, and just remember that nothing is set in stone.
- 5:30Speaker 1: You can always evolve your podcast as it grows and as you change.
- 5:36Speaker 1: So thank you so much for tuning in to another imperfect marketing brief where we're helping you navigate your podcasting journey in this series of episodes.
- 5:46Speaker 1: This is, i think, the final episode on podcasting for now, but I have several different interviews with guests, all about podcasting and guesting on podcasts and different ways that you can test things out.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Until next time, happy podcasting and have a great rest of your day.
