- 0:01Hello, Melissa Crook here from the Field Podcast.
- 0:04So glad to have you here with us this week On today's episode on
- 0:08the Field podcast. We've got Tara May Temple with
- 0:11this with her episode titled being from Expectations to
- 0:15empowerment. Tara May Temple's journey when
- 0:19learning to live out of your own expectations, start asking
- 0:23yourself questions to get you to know yourself better and know
- 0:26what you truly desire. Think of this as you sit in
- 0:30silence, meditate, journal, pray, or any other acts that
- 0:35allow you to consider the expectations of your authentic
- 0:39self so that you know that what you are asking of yourself is
- 0:44truly coming from you and not other people's expectations or
- 0:49other narratives that you heard that aren't actually what you
- 0:52desire. And then you got to communicate
- 0:55those as well to those around you.
- 0:58We hope this helps you engage today with this episode with our
- 1:02friend Tara May Temple from expectations to empowerment, her
- 1:06journey. Thanks so much for being with
- 1:08us. Hello field podcast audience.
- 1:26Welcome back this week. I have a friend here with me
- 1:29today that if you listen to our radio show in 2024, you will
- 1:33have heard her voice and she joined me on a really couple of
- 1:39really intentional conversations in the fall and we'll talk more
- 1:42about that later. So she is not new to the
- 1:46network, but she's new to the podcast.
- 1:48Met her through our good friends at Pod Match.
- 1:51Thankful for all the connections I'm able to make there.
- 1:54Tara Temple is here today. Tara, welcome to the Field
- 1:57podcast. Well, thank you, Melissa.
- 2:00It's so great to be here. I'm excited to have a
- 2:02conversation with your listeners and you I.
- 2:06I I am too. I this is going to be, this is
- 2:09going to be great and you're going to have so much to say.
- 2:12Your story ties in so succinctly with what it is we talk about
- 2:17here. And Tara describes herself as
- 2:21kind, spiritual, loyal, passionate and caring.
- 2:26And those things really come through.
- 2:29I've had the opportunity to talk to you a few times already via
- 2:32our platforms, and those things really come through as people
- 2:37listen to you. You're very insightful, you're
- 2:41very intuitive, and so I'm really excited to share your
- 2:44voice, your resources, and your story here with us today.
- 2:49I think you're just going to have so much to say about these
- 2:51talking points, but let's get right into it.
- 2:55I'm excited. I am looking forward to giving
- 2:59people up there a bit of inspiration, especially
- 3:01especially right now in our world.
- 3:03I know everybody needs it. Yes, yes, so true, so true.
- 3:09And Tara's joining me from the Ontario spot of Canada, our good
- 3:13friends to the north, and she's trying to stay warm up there
- 3:17right now as we're recording in the winter time.
- 3:20It's so cold. So yeah.
- 3:24So I'm thankful to have her voice here with me today.
- 3:27But Tara, talk to me about, let's start with your journey
- 3:32with prioritizing self-care in your life.
- 3:35This is something you had to go through some bumps to realize
- 3:39how important it was to you. So talk to me about your journey
- 3:43with self-care. Yes.
- 3:47So I'd say about 5-6 years ago, I, you know, I'd like to do
- 3:54things like yoga and exercise, but sometimes that would drop
- 3:58off the radar, especially with raising a young child.
- 4:02So I was very, I would prioritize being a mother 1st
- 4:05and take care of my family and being a career woman at the same
- 4:09time. So I was in the corporate world
- 4:12at the height of my career in fundraising and marketing.
- 4:18And basically I, you know, I had my dream job.
- 4:22I thought, you know, I was making a lot of money, pretty
- 4:25much the most money I've had, I ever had in my, the span of my
- 4:29career. And I was starting to develop
- 4:34people. I had a team that was underneath
- 4:36me and I was the leader. So I thought what a, what a
- 4:41great way to make a living. You know, I'm doing, I'm working
- 4:45for hospital, I'm helping raise money.
- 4:49I love this because I'm helping people indirectly, you know,
- 4:55helping to save lives indirectly by raising money for healthcare.
- 4:59So I thought, you know, that that was all great and
- 5:02everything, but it got to the point where I was just not
- 5:06feeling right in my body. I felt very, I was feeling sick,
- 5:11overrun, burnt out, you know, stress building up while having
- 5:17to manage career and family. So we got to a point where I did
- 5:23have a health scare during the peak of my career.
- 5:27Obstacles were piling up everywhere in terms of dealing
- 5:32with people at the office. And no matter what I did to find
- 5:38solutions to conflict, solutions to misunderstandings and
- 5:45solutions to just working better with people, nothing seemed to
- 5:49be working. It seemed like the universe and
- 5:52God was telling me, you know, like you're not meant to be
- 5:56here. It didn't feel like it was the
- 5:59right place for me. I felt, I felt like, you know,
- 6:03like I'm meant to be some, somewhere else.
- 6:06My heart wasn't in the job I was.
- 6:09I got to the point where I was like, oh, why am I, why am I
- 6:12feeling miserable like this? And so I, I was going through
- 6:18some health stuff and I realized, you know, like I need
- 6:21to step back and really assess what's happening here.
- 6:26And, you know, if I don't have my health and I can't think
- 6:30straight and there's brain fog and it's affecting all my
- 6:34systems, my mind, body and spirit.
- 6:38If I don't do something to fix this right now, then not only is
- 6:43my career in jeopardy, but my family and my relationships are
- 6:48also in jeopardy. So I need to make, I had to make
- 6:53that realization. And I thought, you know, where
- 6:57would my family be without me? So basically had to prioritize
- 7:02my family 1st and health. At the start of 2020, I made
- 7:07changes, really assessed my environment and decided to leave
- 7:12my career, although that was bittersweet, leaving income on
- 7:18the table, deciding to relocate and get out of the city and live
- 7:23somewhere in a small town where, you know, there wasn't so much
- 7:27noise pollution and it didn't feel chaotic and like it was
- 7:31suffocating my soul. Yeah.
- 7:34So I really undergoed, like, a really intense self discovery
- 7:40when we did move. And I always say things happen
- 7:44for a reason. It was around the time the
- 7:47pandemic was starting Lock down was on his way and we're we're
- 7:53just saying we need to get out of here.
- 7:55We didn't know how we're gonna make it happen.
- 7:57But I'm a very spiritual and person that believes in God and
- 8:03in faith. So I thought it was our destiny.
- 8:06You may might as well pursue getting out of the city in
- 8:10however way we can. So we looked at our options.
- 8:14We, we sold their place in the city and then moved down here
- 8:18and I got in touch with nature again, got in touch with how I
- 8:23was feeling in self-care. And, you know, I, I realized I
- 8:29started showing up a lot more differently with my family.
- 8:33I wasn't so short or angry when I began to take care of myself.
- 8:40So I made lifestyle changes and prioritize my health as well.
- 8:47And, you know, it wasn't easy because that was out of my
- 8:49comfort zone. Like I was a career woman for
- 8:53several years and, you know, wanted to have that stability
- 8:58and income for my family. But you know, everything was
- 9:03pretty much showing up in my past telling me you're meant to
- 9:06go somewhere else. And through that journey, I
- 9:09found my love for writing again. It really got into the
- 9:14publishing world and helping other non fiction authors edit
- 9:18their books and along the journey during the pandemic into
- 9:24I think it took me two or three years to write my own story.
- 9:28I wrote a teaching memoir about the lessons that I've learned in
- 9:31my life and how can I develop these strategies to help other
- 9:36women and other people achieve in our peace.
- 9:39And by writing that story out, you know, sharing my wisdom
- 9:45through the messages in that book, I really hope to inspire
- 9:50other women to know that, you know, it's within your reach to
- 9:54find your potential and your peace.
- 9:57So I knew deep in my heart, since I was a young girl, I've
- 10:01always wanted to help people suffer less.
- 10:04And I just know that it's my mission to be here, to put my
- 10:10message out and my story out, to help others.
- 10:14Wow, wow. So powerful and a lot of courage
- 10:17wrapped up in that. I want because you walked away
- 10:21from a very well paying, very financially stable job.
- 10:25And so many times we just keep pushing through because we're
- 10:30afraid. We're afraid and we don't listen
- 10:33to the cues our bodies giving us.
- 10:35Your story is so deeply entrenched in taking care of our
- 10:40emotional and physical health, our mental, emotional,
- 10:44spiritual, all those pieces you've just described that
- 10:48talking point and we talked about here very succinctly and
- 10:51the direct tie it had to your Wellness and yourself care.
- 10:58What is it that you think gave you the what?
- 11:00What in your background gave you that wisdom and insight to know
- 11:04you needed to listen? Because so many times as women,
- 11:07we don't, we keep pushing the voices away.
- 11:11So talk to me about your your ability to really respond to
- 11:16that. Yes.
- 11:18So growing up, I, I seen a lot of my caregivers, a lot of women
- 11:24self abandoned themselves for the sake of the family cooking,
- 11:29you know, working, making an income while taking care of the
- 11:34household and raising children. And I've seen how much self
- 11:38abandonment can weigh on, you know, family members, mental,
- 11:44emotional, spiritual and physical state.
- 11:46I've seen a lot of them have health scares as well.
- 11:53So when seeing that, I've seen a lot of suffering in that way.
- 11:56And when you know is I come, well, my caregivers come from a
- 12:03generation where they're just used to caring for others.
- 12:06They put their family 1st and I highly regard that and admire
- 12:11that. But what they didn't know is
- 12:14they didn't have the tools and you know, the knowledge that we
- 12:19share so freely today that was within within our fingertips.
- 12:24They don't they didn't have it back then.
- 12:26So they don't know any any bad about self regulation and taking
- 12:31care of your health and not self abandoning.
- 12:34And also they didn't know boundaries.
- 12:38Boundaries were not existent. Exactly.
- 12:41Speak to that. Speak to the boundaries piece
- 12:43here, or the lack thereof. Yes.
- 12:46So basically what what I saw is like when when I saw, you know,
- 12:51friends or family members that had lack of boundaries, I pretty
- 12:55much witnessed a lot of, you know, strife.
- 12:59You could tell that they're overwhelmed and weighed down and
- 13:03that it was creating tension and resentment between
- 13:07relationships. Yeah, and that builds up over
- 13:12time. And when you don't know how to
- 13:14create a healthy boundary, you're really self abandoning
- 13:18yourself. And that can get you into a lot
- 13:20of health issues in their conflict.
- 13:25And you don't have Peace of Mind.
- 13:27You're, you're constantly on the go taking care of everyone else
- 13:31and putting everyone's needs first.
- 13:34So it's, it's definitely something I wish my older
- 13:39generations of women in my family knew how to do better.
- 13:44And yes, and, and it's only because I say that because I
- 13:48care about them and I feel bad that they didn't have access to
- 13:52the content and resources about living healthy and putting
- 13:58yourself first. Yeah, absolutely.
- 14:01And you just tied in beautifully our first three talking points
- 14:05and how they're connected, how they're interrelated, the power
- 14:10of them. And just, you know, breaking
- 14:14generational cycles is such an important piece of what you saw.
- 14:17Like, I've seen this, how this plays out.
- 14:20This is not a road I'm going to continue down for myself.
- 14:24I knew when I was younger I wanted better.
- 14:26Now I've got a chance to do something about it.
- 14:29So I'm going to take the necessary steps, maybe as scary
- 14:32as they mean, but I know I don't want to end up where I saw their
- 14:38lives go with that continual self abandoned.
- 14:41Would it cost your health? Would it cost your
- 14:44relationships? There's so many tie insurance to
- 14:47that. And that's all part of our
- 14:49self-care. I'd say often self-care is
- 14:51healthcare. It's caring for yourself.
- 14:54Yes, we like to do the nice fun things, the spas and the and the
- 15:00bubble baths and that. All those things are great, but
- 15:03it's beyond that. It's tending and listening to
- 15:06your body when it's giving you clues and looking at your, the
- 15:11generations that are older than you and.
- 15:14And like, oh, wait a minute, I see what's happening here.
- 15:18I'm going to learn from this. I'm going to do better for
- 15:21myself, which is then going to be better for my child because
- 15:25she, yeah, she's going to see this as possible.
- 15:28And I'm going to not, you know, so thank you for all of that.
- 15:31That was really so well explained.
- 15:34So talk to me about your own boundaries.
- 15:37You've got to this point. You realize you need to make
- 15:39changes. You moved.
- 15:41You've got back out to nature. Talk to me now about where when
- 15:46you decided to make these moves, these are big moves, how to be
- 15:50about communicating this need to do this to your family because
- 15:56you're like, OK, guys, we're we're heading now we're getting
- 15:59out of the city, your workspaces.
- 16:02Talk to me about that establishing those because she
- 16:06said it's all boundaries are for our self preservation.
- 16:09They're so we don't abandoned ourselves.
- 16:11They're not walls. They're not these brick, bricks
- 16:14and mortar. They're they're guideposts and
- 16:17spaces where we are able to protect our time and our
- 16:21bandwidth to make sure we can fill our cups and come back as
- 16:26our healthiest, most authentic selves in all the spaces we
- 16:29inhabit. But what was it like
- 16:31communicating this to people? Oh, yeah.
- 16:35So basically, you know, what I was, I got to a point where I
- 16:41was so consumed with making myself and my family happy and
- 16:46joyful and healthy that it no longer, you know, took up my
- 16:53mind space about what others would think about this
- 16:56situation. You know, I I say, you know, let
- 17:00it be. I used to be the type of person
- 17:02many years ago before I healed. We're worried about what others
- 17:06thought. Yeah.
- 17:07But, you know, we're in the state of the world when the
- 17:12pandemic was just beginning and people were afraid for their
- 17:16lives. So people were uncertain, right?
- 17:20So people were stuck in their own fear, in their own, you
- 17:24know, insecurities and uncertainties that my husband
- 17:30and I just need to move ahead on this plan.
- 17:32And we felt so comfortable about it.
- 17:34And we thought, you know, we're doing this for our daughter's,
- 17:39our daughter's future and for our family's future.
- 17:43So it was really, you know, something that we just went full
- 17:49steam ahead on, and I'm so thankful for that.
- 17:53So it took some planning, but we like to plan and you know it, it
- 17:58took some exploring during a time when it was very dark for
- 18:01people. People were getting sick,
- 18:03people, a lot of lives were lost.
- 18:07I acknowledge that suffering when it was happening, but it
- 18:10felt like almost like the twilight zone where, yeah, you
- 18:14know, you don't know what's going to happen in the world.
- 18:17So I felt like I was, you know, let's just go for the stream of
- 18:21getting a house out of the city and, you know, living in a
- 18:25totally different environment. It's kind of like pressing
- 18:28reset. And in a time where people were
- 18:32clicking reset on their lives during lockdown, we were pretty
- 18:37much resetting everything. So that was very helpful to do.
- 18:42And then in terms of the boundaries, like you said it,
- 18:47it's so true that you need to protect your time and your
- 18:50safety. And that needs to be
- 18:54communicated clearly with family and friends, you know, and
- 18:59overtime, like when you first Start learning how to instill
- 19:03those boundaries, you're going to feel a little bit guilty at
- 19:07first, as I did, because you're so used to like not thinking,
- 19:13caring about your own feelings that that self abandonment.
- 19:18Yes, it feels uncomfortable because you're putting that
- 19:21boundary in place. But at the same time you feel
- 19:25guilty because you feel like you're living leaving those
- 19:29people in the dark, kind of just saying the hell with you.
- 19:32But you do it in a nice way, in an assertive way.
- 19:36And you make it very simple without having to explain
- 19:39yourself and learning just to say no as a complete sentence.
- 19:44And you know, just being clear about what you want, like for
- 19:48example, at night after I have my nightly shower and dinner's
- 19:52over and everything, my family knows not to go into my room
- 19:57after I have my shower because they know that's my meditation
- 20:01time. So I just said to them, you
- 20:04know, I'd like to make a simple request that you guys don't come
- 20:07in the room while I'm doing my meditation.
- 20:10That's my time to refuel my, my mind, body, spirit.
- 20:14So they know that. I love that.
- 20:17That's a great example. That is a really great example
- 20:21and the way you say it, and I love how you talked about don't
- 20:24need to over explain. I need to do for the my this for
- 20:27my Wellness, my health. Those that authentically care
- 20:30about you and want you to be well are going to come around.
- 20:33Even if it takes some time for them to get used to the new
- 20:36boundary, they will come around because they want you to be well
- 20:39too. If they if they don't come
- 20:41around that, that might be an indication of a different
- 20:44boundary around that relationship.
- 20:46I mean, these are all opportunities to learn about
- 20:48that. And I think for so many people,
- 20:53and it's sad to me, and I think what I'd love to see us get past
- 20:57by using these frameworks that you and I are talking about here
- 21:00and that we talk about on the podcast regularly is time and
- 21:03time again, not only personal like roadblocks that we run into
- 21:07with our health. But for so many in the world,
- 21:10and especially I think in North America and Europe, it took this
- 21:15massive catastrophic event of a of COVID to get people to sit
- 21:24down long enough to consider that they might need a reset.
- 21:29That they might need to look at how they're spending their time
- 21:33and who they're giving their time to valuing these
- 21:36relationships because all of a sudden people were being lost
- 21:40that no one ever thought they were going to be losing in that
- 21:43time span. So it, it really forced us to
- 21:47face some hard truths. I would love us to get to a
- 21:50point where it doesn't take something really difficult or
- 21:55catastrophic in your life personally or on a world scope,
- 21:59global scope, to make us sit back and listen.
- 22:01Let's put these frameworks in in place now.
- 22:05Let's value ourselves and our relationships and our life
- 22:11enough now to not need to hit this.
- 22:13But because you go back to how you saw women operating as you
- 22:18grew up, the scripts we get as little girls, I mean, we get
- 22:21these collectively as women. But then there's another level
- 22:26depending on your background, your faith space, your
- 22:30ethnicity, your socio economic space, all these things, you
- 22:35know, play into the depth and the intensity of these messages
- 22:40that you that we get about taking care of with everyone
- 22:44else and prioritizing yourself is selfish and all these really
- 22:48backwards ways of thinking. But when they're so ingrained,
- 22:53it's really hard. You talked about feeling guilty
- 22:55at first. It's really hard to get that
- 22:57mind shift going. And it takes time and practice
- 23:01to convince your nervous system or no, this is good.
- 23:05We're on a good path here. And it also takes people time.
- 23:10It didn't operate that way and may not understand it and may be
- 23:13fearful of your choices and what they mean instead of realizing,
- 23:19no, this is actually healthy. And just because we've always
- 23:21done it that way doesn't mean it's the healthiest way to go.
- 23:26Exactly. And you want a good point there.
- 23:29Because you know. What you're so right about
- 23:31people like the older generations being stuck in their
- 23:35ways and having traditional ways of thinking, not being really
- 23:39open to anything, almost like being close minded, not in a bad
- 23:43way, but just being used to what they're used to.
- 23:47So something someone does something of a younger
- 23:49generation, their family that is out of the norm, not within
- 23:53their expectations, that's definitely going to throw them
- 23:57off. But you know, if you're
- 24:00authentic to yourself, you're being true to your heart, your
- 24:03soul, and you're doing it for the good of your own mental
- 24:07health and well-being. And, you know, sometimes you're,
- 24:10you're going to disappoint people, but you have to realize
- 24:14that's part of life. And if they're going to be
- 24:16disappointed in in what you're doing to make yourself better,
- 24:22then they're just going to have to stay that way.
- 24:24And you're going to have to, you know, let go of you know what
- 24:28they're thinking about you. Yeah.
- 24:31So when you let go of what others, how others perceive you,
- 24:36that creates more space and freedom for you to who you are
- 24:40in this world. You're not fitting this mold of
- 24:44what they want you to be. And then, you know, if you start
- 24:48to shed those expectations of our different roles that we play
- 24:54and not hold on to them so much like, Oh my gosh, I'm, I'm a
- 24:58daughter, like, you know, I'm a grandchild and I'm not
- 25:02fulfilling my responsibilities as as those roles, that puts
- 25:08more pressure on you as a person.
- 25:10And if you just take the pressure away and don't take
- 25:14your try not to take your roles too serious seriously, even
- 25:17though it is important to take care of your family and and be
- 25:21caring, don't do it at the expense of your own mental,
- 25:26emotional and spiritual physical health, right?
- 25:29Yes, yes, you said that so well, so good.
- 25:34And this really has enabled you to really show up
- 25:37unapologetically for yourself and now you're supporting and
- 25:41providing resources to other women to do so.
- 25:45But it's that when I, when we are well, then it's better for
- 25:49everybody else. And we need to really start
- 25:52shifting our mindsets as a culture to see that when we're
- 25:58taking care of ourselves and prioritizing our Wellness,
- 26:01everybody wins. And if you view it as a loss,
- 26:05then that's something you need to work through.
- 26:07Like if someone is pushing back or not responding well to these
- 26:11changes, it's not your responsibility to change their
- 26:14mind. It's not responsibility your
- 26:17energy exactly to force. Them into something they're not
- 26:21ready for, that's their work to do.
- 26:23But that doesn't mean you shouldn't move forward with what
- 26:27you know is healthiest for yourself.
- 26:29So really well said on that. Talk to me about that
- 26:34unapologetic piece you mentioned earlier, the freedom that when
- 26:38you release other people's expectations and, and you
- 26:42release those things that you have been trying to live by to
- 26:46keep everybody else well but abandoned yourself, it really
- 26:50does free you up to to be authentic to you.
- 26:53You got back to your writing. You got back to helping others
- 26:57with their writing. You've got resources via books
- 27:00and journals now available for women.
- 27:03When talk to me about that transition of like, wait a
- 27:07minute, I am not only helping myself here by making these
- 27:11changes, I can help others too. And that's really always been
- 27:15within me. Talk to me about moving into
- 27:17that space. Yes, it's, it took a lot of self
- 27:22discovery, but when I began writing my story and the lessons
- 27:26I've learned throughout different points of my life, I,
- 27:30I realized this is just not for me to keep.
- 27:32This is for me to teach other people through my website,
- 27:37through social media and through these podcasts, ways in which
- 27:43she could really find inner peace.
- 27:47And it's my mission to do that because I, I care about people
- 27:51and I see the suffering that people experience.
- 27:54I feel that energy of, you know, struggles that people go
- 27:58through. And pretty much we have
- 28:03universal themes that we all go through in our lives, whether
- 28:07that be grief, identity crisis, relationship issues with either
- 28:14friends or family or, you know, parental relationships and also
- 28:21like self identity issues as well.
- 28:25And, you know, power, status, wealth and, you know, ego,
- 28:30everyone has a dark side and a good side.
- 28:32So I realized, you know, this is something I really need to
- 28:36disseminate and find a framework to find simple ways and simple
- 28:40strategies that people can, you know, implement in their lives
- 28:44in small steps to find just a little bit of peace if they're,
- 28:49you know, not ready to go on a full healing journey.
- 28:52Because there's little bits and pieces and glimmers of hope in
- 28:56our everyday journey. And if you just, you know, do
- 28:59something for yourself that makes you joyful without
- 29:03worrying about what others are going to think of you, or if
- 29:07without worrying about being judged and just doing it things
- 29:10for yourself, that creates a lot of freedom and peace.
- 29:16So yeah, I'd love to write about strategies on how to help people
- 29:20cope with these different life challenges in different stages
- 29:25and phases of their life. And it's all all about mindset
- 29:30reframing, assessing your environment to promote healing,
- 29:35and having compassion for yourself and others.
- 29:38So if you make a mistake, please don't beat yourself up over it.
- 29:42This is all part of being human and learning our lessons along
- 29:46the way on our path to evolution and growth.
- 29:50So I'm doing what I'm doing as a mission to bring unity to people
- 29:54because there's so much division, especially in this
- 29:58world of how politics are unfolding and people, you know,
- 30:04being displaced from climate change and the recent wildfires
- 30:09and not only California, but other parts of the world as
- 30:12well. Yeah.
- 30:14You know, it's just we're not going to have the outside
- 30:18external things to comfort us. We have to rely on our our inner
- 30:24strength and how we deal with ourselves.
- 30:28And if we can love ourselves and love others, that can really go
- 30:34a long way in helping you feel like you could thrive.
- 30:39Yeah. And get through anything.
- 30:41Because as we've seen with these people being displaced from
- 30:45their homes at this time in the world, it's, you know, it just
- 30:52shows that, you know, you've built a life.
- 30:54It can get knocked down again. We could go through rough bottom
- 31:00and lose everything. But if you work on building your
- 31:04inner peace and strength and loving yourself and loving
- 31:09people around you, it can go. It can help you rebuild again.
- 31:16So, and that's what people need to know.
- 31:18We can't rely on outer things, but you have to rebuild your
- 31:22life. Yes, that firm foundation within
- 31:26you. Thank you so much.
- 31:27That was so good. You spoke to that so well and
- 31:29that goes really nicely into coming back to your why in your
- 31:33values. You allowed your why in your
- 31:36values to be shaped and formed and to build a life that fit
- 31:41into that, that aligned with that, that felt authentic to
- 31:45that. You recognized when this
- 31:48corporate job and his life in the city is not in alignment
- 31:52anymore, even though you, the the organizations you were
- 31:54working for was doing really philanthropic work.
- 31:58So sometimes I think it's important to point out that just
- 32:01because you're doing a good thing, there may be a time that
- 32:05it comes in, it's not the right good thing for you to be doing
- 32:08anymore. And really circling back to what
- 32:11you, what you value and, and start looking at what's my why
- 32:16behind this. You determined my why behind
- 32:18staying here has been this stability, but this stability,
- 32:23financial stability is costing me and every other area of my
- 32:27life. So I've got to get aligned with
- 32:29those values and you were kind of partner supporting you in
- 32:33that, which is huge. But talk to me about your why in
- 32:37values journey and how that informs you.
- 32:42Yes, so basically I, I thought about like, sometimes I'm only
- 32:48human too. So I, I like to ask questions
- 32:50about how can I live a better life or what can I learn to, to
- 32:57help me navigate a certain situation.
- 32:59So I'm always getting curious and asking myself how can I
- 33:03improve my personal development and growth?
- 33:07And, and I, I try to put myself in other people's shoes.
- 33:11What, what would they want to know on about their lives and
- 33:17how can they navigate their situations as well.
- 33:21So my why values always goes back to thinking about humanity.
- 33:28How can we suffer less? How can we do away with inner
- 33:32conflict? How can we live less from a
- 33:37state of feeding our egos and instead of coming and living
- 33:43from a spiritual place where we're compassionate and caring
- 33:47about not only ourselves, but others.
- 33:51And you know, it's, it's always life is complicated,
- 33:56relationships are complicated. But hearing other people's
- 34:01stories and reading about different ways of how to
- 34:07navigate certain situations, I just like to go on explorations
- 34:12of, you know, how can I develop this different content to put a
- 34:17message out there that will make someone's day a little better.
- 34:21So it's, it's baby steps. It's not throwing a big
- 34:24framework at somebody and saying, you know, this is how
- 34:27you get to inner peace. It's a, it's a huge journey and
- 34:32it'll be an, a healing journey every day till the day you're no
- 34:37longer here on earth. So try different modalities.
- 34:42And I encourage that. I, I come from, you know, a
- 34:45religious background of Roman Catholic, and I'm still true to
- 34:48my religion this day, but I'm more so spiritual.
- 34:53And I, I really think that people can find their way if
- 35:00they're just open to trying different modalities, trying
- 35:05different ways of healing and just seeing what works for you.
- 35:08Yeah, yes. And everyone will find something
- 35:12different. But there's always a path to
- 35:14feeling a little better and healing any trauma that I mean,
- 35:18that you have and you can get there.
- 35:21It seems hard at first, but if you put in a little bit of work
- 35:26and find a support network like you're podcasting your
- 35:30community, Melissa and Racing Layers Network, women really
- 35:35need that. And you know, sometimes women
- 35:38don't always have the support system in their own lives.
- 35:41That when you can reach out and and be a part of a community
- 35:45like yours where women are uplifting each other and not
- 35:49bring each other down and trying to teach each other different
- 35:54lessons, I think we can come together and and build this
- 35:59unity that we need right now in our world.
- 36:02Yeah. So yes.
- 36:05Thank you so much for that. Thank you for the affirmation
- 36:07and thank you for the wisdom. You have so much wisdom about
- 36:10this. Your curiosity really drives
- 36:13your learning it your passion does your your caring does you
- 36:17are set. You're you're naturally
- 36:20empathetic. Like that's really built into
- 36:22you're naturally intuitive and that really drives how you
- 36:27proceed with yourself, with others, what you offer, what you
- 36:31share, and what you continue to learn.
- 36:34And what you said is so true. Stay with it ladies.
- 36:38There are ways and places and things that you can do to find
- 36:43that peace and that contentment. It is a journey.
- 36:45It is not an overnight fix. We are not here to here's five
- 36:50ways to reach inner peace in the next six weeks.
- 36:53That's not going to happen. It's a it's a continual journey,
- 36:58but it's that willingness to go on it.
- 37:00Be curious, be kind, be empathetic and, and, and, and
- 37:05learn from each other. That was just so beautifully
- 37:07laid out and that is you. Your values are like you just
- 37:12described your values right in there, like all those things or
- 37:17what you value and what drive you.
- 37:19That was really beautiful. Thank you so much for that.
- 37:21We've talked a little bit about this already, but living out of
- 37:25your own expectations versus others, you have moved into
- 37:29this, you've seen the value of it.
- 37:31You've seen what it was costing you to try to meet all these
- 37:35other expectations. You've seen what it's cost the
- 37:38generations before you. You have now moved into this
- 37:41space where this it's a, it's a value of yours in many ways to
- 37:45live from that, that authentic place.
- 37:48So talk to me about that journey and getting to you the space
- 37:53where you really do live authentically there and how you
- 37:56help others to get there as well.
- 37:59Yes, so so the journey could be 1 where you feel lonely for a
- 38:04while because you're you're excavating all these this
- 38:08different messaging and content to help you grow as a person.
- 38:13But it's kind of, you know, like going on a spiritual retreat for
- 38:18myself that very much felt like it.
- 38:22I'd ask questions, I journal, I'd say my prayers everyday to
- 38:26look for answers. Whenever I was experiencing an
- 38:31issue or a problem, I would journal about about it.
- 38:36And it had, you know, the answer wouldn't appear right away.
- 38:40Sometimes they wouldn't, you know, I'd have to ask this
- 38:42question to myself every day either, just in my own head as
- 38:47I'm going through the day. How, how am I going to get
- 38:50answers to this problem? And you know, how am I like, how
- 38:58do I navigate the situation? So I'm always asking questions
- 39:02through my prayer, through my meditation, and just in my head
- 39:06throughout the day. And I found that through healing
- 39:10journeys, you do need to ask yourself these questions so that
- 39:14you can get to a point where you feel comfortable in your own
- 39:17skin and you're being steered in the direction that you're meant
- 39:21to be and meant to go. Everyone has a destined path
- 39:26that they're meant for. And I encourage you to look out
- 39:30for those signs that are telling you to go in another direction.
- 39:33If something's falling away in your life that you know, you
- 39:37don't expect it to go away and but you're trying to hold on to
- 39:41it, that's a sign that it's, you need to let that go and move on
- 39:46to a different path in your life because doors are always closing
- 39:50and, and people don't realize, OK, you know, like, why did
- 39:55this? Why is this opportunity falling
- 39:57away? It's because the universe and
- 40:00God has something greater in store for you.
- 40:04So it's just being open to science.
- 40:06Be very open to what you're feeling intuitively.
- 40:10Sometimes you'll feel that in your gut.
- 40:13Sometimes you'll, you'll ask yourself a question.
- 40:16You'll just feel an inner knowing in your heart whether
- 40:20that thing is right for you or not.
- 40:23And sometimes there could just be signs of, you know, you
- 40:27overhear someone speaking in public or on on a podcast or on
- 40:33TV, or you read a book and you know, like a message just really
- 40:38lands for you. And that took it's leading you
- 40:41on the path to to heal, to not be afraid of healing.
- 40:47And you know, don't don't let your fears get the best of you
- 40:52because love is stronger. And if you feel alone and
- 40:56isolated while you're going on a healing journey, that that's OK
- 41:01because you're never really alone.
- 41:02If you believe in spirituality, you do have guys and angels
- 41:06looking over you to help you through.
- 41:11So it can feel like a lonely journey at first to heal.
- 41:14And you know, when you know it's the right time to do that for
- 41:19you, you won't be worrying about what other people's expectations
- 41:24are of you. You'll you'll feel free.
- 41:27It feels very liberating. And you know, a spiritual
- 41:31awakening is you know, it's the greatest gift that you can give
- 41:35yourself. It is to heal your inner beans
- 41:38and move on with your life and go for what you're really meant
- 41:43to be doing in this world. Yeah.
- 41:45Oh yeah. Gosh, so good.
- 41:48You're really good at this. You're really good at eating
- 41:50touch on things so well and you had to trust yourself in that.
- 41:54And I think that is not. It's one thing to get the
- 41:57messages, it's another thing to trust them.
- 42:01How have you learned to trust that and not?
- 42:06And I think sometimes we just get to a point like, I can't
- 42:08live like this anymore. I have no other choice but to
- 42:12listen to this and trust this and move forward because staying
- 42:15where I'm at is not working. Is that how it worked for you or
- 42:18was there a different path to really learning to trust
- 42:21yourself? Yeah, that's a great question,
- 42:24Melissa. And I love that because if
- 42:27you're deeply intuitive and you learn how to harness that
- 42:31intuition within yourself, you really know, like for me, it was
- 42:36a lot of nudges and bread crumbs and signals and signs that I was
- 42:41getting to lead me down the path to pursue my writing again, to
- 42:46write a book, you know, for example, wherever I went or
- 42:51wherever I go to this day, I'm, I'm getting signs that are
- 42:56telling me to still, you know, pursue this journey of being a
- 43:00writer and an author and getting my word out there.
- 43:05So it's just, it's a constant reminder.
- 43:08It's like this radio frequency where you're getting these
- 43:12messages spoken to you and it doesn't ever shut up.
- 43:18Like it's like on constant repeat.
- 43:21And I think, you know, like if you tune into that, the universe
- 43:26and God always has a way of communicating with you.
- 43:30So try to tune into that harness.
- 43:32I know if some people haven't cultivated that yet, do some
- 43:37research and see how you can cultivate that a little bit
- 43:40more. And it's a recent topic I talked
- 43:44about in my recent free newsletter that ioffer on my
- 43:46website, if you want to subscribe to it, is finding a
- 43:51spiritual solution to your problems.
- 43:54And this involves following your inner knowing and looking for
- 43:58these these signs and messages that come through to you on a
- 44:04loop. And that's how you know it.
- 44:07It just sits right with you. If you can have here a message,
- 44:10it'll sit with you and I'll just feel right.
- 44:13And that's how you know that's the path to go down.
- 44:16Some people having need to learn how to cultivate it.
- 44:20And I encourage it. Yeah.
- 44:22I'm. So glad you brought up that
- 44:24cultivation piece because because of the fast-paced
- 44:27society we live in, we live much of our lives disassociated from
- 44:30our bodies. We just go, go, go, go, go and
- 44:33push it, push it back. And so it does take some time.
- 44:37Sit down, pause, give yourself space to actually TuneIn to what
- 44:45your body is trying to tell you what your spirit, your soul is
- 44:50trying to speak to you and take some time and it, and it does
- 44:54take a commitment to cultivate it once you do.
- 44:57And it's president's there, it's present, you know, and I mean,
- 45:03and I can attest to that because I've gone on my own journey.
- 45:06Like, I know it's just up to me to be like, oh, yeah, OK, I'm,
- 45:10I'm feeling this and this. And it'll keep nudging you.
- 45:13It'll get your attention in ways you can't ignore until you
- 45:18acknowledge it. But yeah, I want to.
- 45:19I'm so glad you brought up the cultivation piece, because if
- 45:23you're like, I'm not getting anything, I'm like, when's the
- 45:24last time you sat down and quieted your mind?
- 45:27Do you set aside any time in your day, your week, to do that,
- 45:32to allow this to develop and grow?
- 45:36Exactly. And then I love that you brought
- 45:38that up because it's in that silence.
- 45:41Once you ask yourself those questions, I you're looking for
- 45:44answers to issues you're facing and you want to be able to solve
- 45:48them. Ask yourself those questions in
- 45:51moments of silence. That's the most powerful time to
- 45:55do that and just listen to your senses and, and what you're
- 45:59feeling and even look at your dreams and, and seeing, you
- 46:05know, like what pops up for you and your dreams.
- 46:07Maybe there's something there, there's a message there that can
- 46:11really be insightful to helping guide your next steps.
- 46:16So just just be fully aware, try to develop your awareness
- 46:21because the answer, sometimes they say the answer is within
- 46:24you and all around you. You just need to find it.
- 46:30Yeah, and give ourselves space to notice it.
- 46:32I mean, honestly and also somatically pay attention to
- 46:36your body, where you're carrying things.
- 46:38We carry so many of these things in our bodies and when we don't
- 46:42give ourselves time to sit and notice that, you know, that
- 46:46plays a role too. So thank you so much for that.
- 46:48So good. All right, accepting the layered
- 46:51aspects of ourselves. These are all the parts and
- 46:54pieces of our life, our story, our character traits that make
- 46:59up who we are. And I really feel like it's an
- 47:03important piece of the journey to really acknowledge those
- 47:06layers, accept those layers. We don't have to love all of
- 47:09them, but we need to acknowledge them and and realized that we're
- 47:13human and, and, and those are all parts and pieces of us.
- 47:18Talk to me about your layers journey.
- 47:21Oh, I'm a very, there's a lot of layers here and a lot of layers
- 47:26I needed to kind of release from through through this healing
- 47:32journey. I had a lot of because they're
- 47:36in the basically, I think with my layers like anger, it was
- 47:43definitely one of them like thinking.
- 47:46And before I got completely healed, I had a lot of anger
- 47:50and, and not knowing why, you know, as I think I bottled
- 47:58things up for so long before I had healed.
- 48:01And that's where the anger stems from because it never got
- 48:04released. And it's a really difficult
- 48:07emotion to deal with because you don't want anyone getting in
- 48:12your way when you're, or being anywhere near you when you're
- 48:15angry that way, because you don't want to make that
- 48:18relationship rupture in any way. So I encourage people, if
- 48:23you're, if you're dealing with some sort of anger emotion, you
- 48:28know, it's, it's going to the safe space where you close the
- 48:31door and you, you know, maybe scream into a pillow or
- 48:34something, you know, and kick is kick and scream in your in your
- 48:39bed or something, something like that.
- 48:41Make it a safe space and release those emotions.
- 48:45And they say if you shake it out, those emotions get released
- 48:50as well. So there's different coping
- 48:53things that you could do to really release your body of what
- 48:57you're holding on to. And they say it's healthy to
- 49:01feel anger. So if you're feeling it, don't
- 49:04shove it down, don't suppress it.
- 49:06Definitely find a way of letting it out in a Safeway way.
- 49:10Yeah. So yeah, go screaming.
- 49:13So a pillow, go for a walk in nature.
- 49:16And they say screaming is really, really, you know,
- 49:20therapeutic for you. And if, if that doesn't work,
- 49:24there's I'm sure there's a whole other host of strategies you
- 49:27could do to believe setting or whether it be journaling,
- 49:32listening to music and just letting yourself feel it for a
- 49:37while so that you can process it and then let it go.
- 49:41So that is one that that one of those complex layers I don't
- 49:46like to have because I almost feel like it's shameful to have
- 49:50that anger. And then I think to myself, oh,
- 49:53why? I have nothing to be angry
- 49:55about. What is that?
- 49:57Where's that coming from? So I asked myself these
- 49:59questions and then I think back to, oh, well, maybe it's because
- 50:05you bottled things up for so long and now it's time to find
- 50:08ways to release these things. So it's very complex.
- 50:14And that that was a hard emotion that I had to deal with through
- 50:18my healing journey and find a way to purify my mind, body and
- 50:23soul of that. Because that anger can fester
- 50:28and, you know, find its way into your cells and not make you feel
- 50:32so great. So yes, yeah, those were one of
- 50:38the emotions that I had difficulty with.
- 50:40And I know others. Others do too.
- 50:43Yeah, I'm so glad you brought up the anger piece because there's
- 50:45so many misguided notions about anger.
- 50:48Anger is a clue. It is a clue to let you know
- 50:51that something needs to be processed, moved through,
- 50:54handled, and also that there's can be multiple ways to approach
- 50:59that. But you got curious.
- 51:01You moved out of judgement in shame and got curious instead
- 51:06and started asking yourself questions so you could get to
- 51:08the why. And so then you could release
- 51:11it. I mean, and I think that's such
- 51:13an important part of the process.
- 51:16I have had to deal with anger as well from different things in my
- 51:20story. And my therapist would say she's
- 51:23like, all right, we've talked about this today.
- 51:26EMDR is a of therapy that I've used.
- 51:29We've used him here, but there's a lot stored up in your body
- 51:32still. So I want you to take a pillow
- 51:34and find a wall that you can hit with it.
- 51:37Find an anger room somewhere. Some cities have anger rooms
- 51:41where you go in and blocks and kick things because you need to
- 51:45it or the screaming. But your body, even if you've
- 51:50identified the why and maybe talked about some things and
- 51:53done some different notes, your body still needs to release it.
- 51:56So thank you for those examples. And, and it's such, I think
- 52:02anger again, is just one of those really misunderstood
- 52:05emotions about what's appropriate about also
- 52:09remembering too, that there's, there's some kinds of anger that
- 52:12can really motivate you to make changes in your own life, in
- 52:18society and whatnot. So channeling it, but don't
- 52:22bottle it up, don't try to hide it, don't be ashamed of it.
- 52:26Your body can't carry it forever.
- 52:28And it's going to come out in a really unpleasant way, whether
- 52:31you're snapping your partner's head off or whether it manifests
- 52:35itself physically in some kind of a going back to that mental,
- 52:39emotional, physical health connection.
- 52:41So thank you so much for sharing that and your vulnerability in
- 52:44that, because that's something I think a lot, a lot of people
- 52:47experience, but they don't know how to approach or they don't
- 52:51want to approach because of stigmas that they've heard in
- 52:54their lives about anger. Yes, of course.
- 52:57And I've heard that the stigmas can get in the way.
- 52:59So yeah, to find different avenues of of letting it go and
- 53:03releasing it, it's a game changer.
- 53:06It really is. Help you, you know, make space
- 53:09for more important things in your life.
- 53:12Absolutely it does. It clears out space.
- 53:14You would literally feel a physical lift off of you when
- 53:18you release that. I mean, I know for me and my
- 53:21experience, I do. Thank you so much for that,
- 53:23Tara. All right, in living out feel,
- 53:26finding empowerment, embracing layers, which is what you are
- 53:29doing. Talk to me about how that has
- 53:33impacted your relationship with yourself as well as your
- 53:37relationship with other people. OK, so I think nowadays I give
- 53:44myself more grace. I I used to be the type of
- 53:47person that would beat myself up or put so much pressure on
- 53:51myself to succeed, almost to a point of where you don't like,
- 53:56you get down on yourself for making a little mistake or, you
- 54:00know, not being perfect in a certain way.
- 54:04But when you start letting go of those expectations of yourself,
- 54:08you give yourself compassion and just meet yourself where you
- 54:11are, you know, makes life so much easier.
- 54:15You don't feel like there's a burden on your shoulders and
- 54:20you're just letting yourself be. You're going with the flow of
- 54:23life. You know, it's all about being
- 54:27and living in the present moment.
- 54:29And if you can master that and learn how to really just embrace
- 54:34the present moment and love yourself where you are, even if
- 54:40you made a little mistake, that's okay.
- 54:42That's part of being human. Yeah.
- 54:45So coming to a full acceptance of myself and being aware of
- 54:50what my flaws are and where I need to improve and just being
- 54:55honest with myself and trusting that I could take care of these
- 54:59things, You know, it leads to a much easier, more peaceful life
- 55:05in a sense because you're taking it easy on yourself.
- 55:09And when you're easier on yourself, that that really
- 55:12creates healthier relationships around you, as I know it has for
- 55:17me with my family. You know, I'm not expecting 10
- 55:21million things of my family because, you know, when you have
- 55:25a partner, you're, you're not relying on, you know, on them to
- 55:30make you joyful. We're 100% responsible to make
- 55:34ourselves happy. They're only one person and
- 55:36can't, you know, carry the load of being responsible for our
- 55:41happiness. So I think being a little
- 55:45lighter on expecting, not really expecting too much of our family
- 55:50members, I think that is a really big game changer in terms
- 55:56of creating more harmonious relationships.
- 56:00Yeah. Oh, that was so well said.
- 56:02Thank you for that. Yeah.
- 56:03We are responsible for ourselves.
- 56:06No one else is responsible for us and we are not responsible
- 56:10for others happiness like so they and it makes you come in
- 56:14when you don't. It takes the pressure off of the
- 56:17relationship too, to be something it was never meant to
- 56:20be. Yes.
- 56:22Yeah. So good, so good.
- 56:25Oh my gosh, so good. OK, we are getting down to the
- 56:28rapid fire here. Name 5 activities that nourish
- 56:33you. OK, so definitely podcast.
- 56:38I love listening to a good podcast.
- 56:40That's that really brings me a boost of motivation every day.
- 56:44So I try to make sure that's a very list of of different
- 56:49people's perspectives. Yeah.
- 56:51So if you're a big podcast fan, go listen to Melissa's Embracing
- 56:56Layers Field podcast. It's really helpful.
- 57:01And then #2 definitely writing. I love doing that meditation
- 57:07clears my cobwebs and you know, very noisy thoughts in my mind
- 57:13and then walks in nature and prayer talking to God.
- 57:18So those are my top five that I love to do and I incorporate
- 57:23pretty much everything of all of those every day.
- 57:27Awesome. I love that.
- 57:28So good. I love that so much.
- 57:29All right, 5 words on how you want to feel the next six
- 57:33months. OK, Joyful, fulfilled.

- 1:00:08about the value of knowing your character traits, not
- 1:00:12identifying yourselves by your roles and your titles.
- 1:00:15It was a really, really good conversation.
- 1:00:17Highly recommend you go visit that as well.
- 1:00:20That'll be linked there. Tara, thank you so much for your
- 1:00:23time today. You are a blessing.

- 1:00:55I mean, I'm thank you so much for your words of support and
- 1:00:58affirmation. I and this is what it looks

- 1:01:04There's room for all of us to do this work and have these
- 1:01:07conversations, and it's necessary to have all of us
- 1:01:11involved so we can bring everybody into this community of
- 1:01:14taking care of ourselves well and knowing that prioritizing
- 1:01:18our Wellness is good for us and for everybody that we're in
- 1:01:22association with. Exactly.
- 1:01:25And that's once you take care of yourself, that's when you get to
- 1:01:28a place of inner peace. So don't stop caring for
- 1:01:31yourselves. Yes, yes, absolutely,
- 1:01:35absolutely. Thank you again for your time
