- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello, my name's Santasha Nabananga Bamblet. I'm a proud yr
- 0:04Speaker 1: the Order Kerni Whoalbury and a waddery woman. And before
- 0:08Speaker 1: we get started on She's on the Money podcast, I
- 0:11Speaker 1: would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land
- 0:14Speaker 1: of which this podcast is recorded on a wondery country,
- 0:18Speaker 1: acknowledging the elders, the ancestors and the next generation coming
- 0:22Speaker 1: through as this podcast is about connecting, empowering, knowledge sharing
- 0:27Speaker 1: and the storytelling of you to make a difference for
- 0:30Speaker 1: today and lasting impact for tomorrow.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Let's get into it.
- 0:34Speaker 3: She's on the Money, She's on the Money.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Hello, and welcome to She's on the Money. Need the
- 1:00Speaker 2: podcast for housemates who want financial.
- 1:03Speaker 4: Freedom from their other housemates.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Today is Friday, which means it is time to get
- 1:07Speaker 2: my little team together. We've got Beck Sayed and Miss
- 1:10Speaker 2: Jess Gricci and we today, as always, are celebrating our
- 1:14Speaker 2: beautiful She's on the Money community. Today we're going to
- 1:17Speaker 2: be sharing or I say we because I want you
- 1:20Speaker 2: and I Beck to be in on what Jess is
- 1:22Speaker 2: bringing to the table. But Jess will be sharing our
- 1:24Speaker 2: favorite money wins. You have another broke tip for us,
- 1:28Speaker 2: We're going to be helping to answer a juicy money dilemma,
- 1:30Speaker 2: which this week is all about channeling funds to pay
- 1:33Speaker 2: down debt more effectively. And we're going to be unpacking
- 1:36Speaker 2: a message that you slid into our DMS about which
- 1:39Speaker 2: this week we're talking about splitting bills in the sharehouse.
- 1:42Speaker 2: And I have an inkling of how this is going
- 1:44Speaker 2: to go because we had a slightly heated conversation about
- 1:46Speaker 2: olive oil before the show started recording. But we're not gonna,
- 1:50Speaker 2: you know, say names or blame ex housemates. That's all good. Beck.
- 1:56Speaker 2: How has your week been? What have you been up to?
- 1:58Speaker 5: My week has been real, cruzy, cruzy, crazy, almost too crazy.
- 2:04Speaker 4: I'm wondering more? Am I missing?
- 2:07Speaker 1: Oh?
- 2:07Speaker 2: No, it's pay week? You got paid?
- 2:09Speaker 4: Ah? Yes, yeah, yes, not stressed anymore?
- 2:12Speaker 2: No, no, no, how did you go give us an
- 2:15Speaker 2: update for fifteen dollars? And like what was it?
- 2:18Speaker 1: Like?
- 2:18Speaker 2: Thirty one cents?
- 2:19Speaker 4: It was thirty three cents?
- 2:21Speaker 2: Okay, sorry, fifteen dollars and thirty three cents that you
- 2:23Speaker 2: had to live off for the last week? Did we
- 2:26Speaker 2: do it?
- 2:27Speaker 4: Need it? Of course you need it.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Nobody doubted you.
- 2:30Speaker 5: Thank you so much. But you know it's because I'm
- 2:32Speaker 5: a single person. I don't have any dependence. I'm very
- 2:36Speaker 5: lucky that way. So I made it work. It lasted
- 2:40Speaker 5: the whole week. I even had a few cents left
- 2:42Speaker 5: at the end.
- 2:42Speaker 2: I love this. We should do like a little join
- 2:45Speaker 2: beck on a frugal week. Yeah, like not necessarily just
- 2:48Speaker 2: pay week, but like we all do one week where
- 2:51Speaker 2: we are as frugal as possible and we can like
- 2:53Speaker 2: calculate how much we save as a team or like
- 2:57Speaker 2: as a community. Everybody else can join in as well
- 3:00Speaker 2: and see how much we could actually save him one week.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Because if anything is impossible to me, it's one of
- 3:05Speaker 2: those no spend months that people on social media do.
- 3:08Speaker 4: Yes, I always have wanted to be one of those people,
- 3:10Speaker 4: and I just simply never have A.
- 3:13Speaker 2: Month is not going to work. But do you reckon?
- 3:14Speaker 2: You could commit to a week?
- 3:16Speaker 4: Give it a crack.
- 3:16Speaker 2: I think we could do a week and then we're
- 3:19Speaker 2: just going to use beck A's gospel and be like beck,
- 3:21Speaker 2: what would you do?
- 3:22Speaker 4: Beck?
- 3:22Speaker 2: How do we make this work? Beck? What's our grocery
- 3:25Speaker 2: list this week? Lack for the most budget options? I
- 3:28Speaker 2: love better belief but do you know what I'm going
- 3:30Speaker 2: to fail all in?
- 3:33Speaker 4: That sounds really fun. Maybe we'll work on ptting that
- 3:35Speaker 4: together so we can do it as a community.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Everyone.
- 3:36Speaker 4: I want great idea.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Yeah, we had to give a catchy name so if
- 3:40Speaker 2: anyone has a catchy name for Beck's Broke Week.
- 3:43Speaker 4: Yeah, some sort of challenge, something about challenging LLB get bracelets.
- 3:49Speaker 2: What would Beck do?
- 3:50Speaker 4: So cute?
- 3:51Speaker 2: Yes, well we're going to do you know what? I
- 3:54Speaker 2: think we should workshop this later.
- 3:55Speaker 4: Yeh, let's workshop it.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Jessica, how's your week being really good?
- 3:58Speaker 4: It's very quiet because of this is enjoying the sunny
- 4:01Speaker 4: shores of Bali right now. And hello, sadly not me.
- 4:05Speaker 2: I'm in Bali, but I have tuned in to talk
- 4:09Speaker 2: about housemates because she wouldn't missed it. Don't tempt me
- 4:13Speaker 2: with a good time.
- 4:14Speaker 4: I mean who wouldn't.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Literally not me, not me. I'm here with bells on,
- 4:19Speaker 2: so let's jump into it. It's been a good week,
- 4:23Speaker 2: especially for me. I have heard that it was also
- 4:28Speaker 2: a good week for our community. Jess what money wins
- 4:30Speaker 2: have you pulled out of the community to share?
- 4:32Speaker 4: My first money win this week comes from Micah, who
- 4:36Speaker 4: said I paid off my small after pay balance with
- 4:39Speaker 4: money from selling clothes that I don't wear that I
- 4:41Speaker 4: used after pay to buy, and I have now closed
- 4:44Speaker 4: my after pay A pound for good when very good,
- 4:46Speaker 4: full circle moment. You love that. My next money win
- 4:50Speaker 4: comes from Samantha, who said I went up a skill
- 4:53Speaker 4: step at my performance review, which means a pay increase
- 4:56Speaker 4: plus the four point five percent pay increase the Union
- 4:59Speaker 4: campaign for means my fortnightly income is about to go up.
- 5:03Speaker 4: Plus I got my tax done and thanks to all
- 5:04Speaker 4: my study deductions, I should be getting a decent refund
- 5:08Speaker 4: tax time. We love to see it. Next, I've got
- 5:11Speaker 4: a money win from Katie, who said I sold a
- 5:13Speaker 4: washing machine on Facebook marketplace for seventy five dollars three
- 5:16Speaker 4: years ago.
- 5:17Speaker 2: I paid fifty dollars for it. Oh my gosh, you
- 5:18Speaker 2: got a money win.
- 5:19Speaker 4: What's that twenty five dollars profit three years later?
- 5:21Speaker 2: The capital gainstow.
- 5:23Speaker 4: We love it. Next, I've got a money win from Chavon,
- 5:27Speaker 4: who said not having to worry about AFL finals this
- 5:30Speaker 4: year is a money win. Freeman's were breaking my heart again,
- 5:33Speaker 4: Not so much.
- 5:35Speaker 2: That's a winner. Or we can be friends.
- 5:39Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, Next I have a money loss from Cass,
- 5:41Speaker 4: who said confession, emotional and stress spending has been intense,
- 5:46Speaker 4: So I have a date with my budget tonight to
- 5:48Speaker 4: reinstate some boundaries and make myself a plan. I love
- 5:52Speaker 4: this normal calling off the horse and getting back on.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Yeah, you can't stay on the horse all the time.
- 5:58Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 6:03Speaker 2: It's like we actually have two brain cells between us
- 6:06Speaker 2: and they're both competing for third place.
- 6:10Speaker 4: Lastly, this week, I have a money win from Amy,
- 6:12Speaker 4: who said I forgot my lunch today and I wasn't
- 6:15Speaker 4: keen to pay for takeaway, but I found a long
- 6:18Speaker 4: forgotten frozen meal in the freezer at work.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Money.
- 6:21Speaker 4: Yes, and that was getting me.
- 6:23Speaker 2: That's good, that's real good. That was giving me BB.
- 6:27Speaker 4: I was right, good one to finish on. I love that.
- 6:30Speaker 2: I love that we should bring that back BB.
- 6:33Speaker 5: Never one away true, be new or have forgotten. BBA
- 6:38Speaker 5: is big back energy. Yehi, I love I love it BB.
- 6:43Speaker 5: Speaking of bringing some BB to this show. Yes, spex
- 6:46Speaker 5: broke tips Okay, BBT, you are great a segways BBT.
- 6:51Speaker 4: It's like a BLT, but more frugal, yes, more tasty bacon.
- 6:57Speaker 2: It's mainly just free cheese and bread from the cafeteria
- 7:01Speaker 2: exactly exactly.
- 7:02Speaker 4: So all right, first one I'm going to start off with.
- 7:06Speaker 2: We're ready from this feels very aggressive.
- 7:11Speaker 4: Let me bring this back. I got this pen in
- 7:15Speaker 4: my hand and I'm pointing every I'm just going to be.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Very could you please let me relax?
- 7:21Speaker 5: Sorry me, Oh my goodness, you don't need my pad
- 7:25Speaker 5: pointing at you from Bali in Bali.
- 7:26Speaker 4: Okay, So this one is from.
- 7:28Speaker 5: Terry who actually, after a little bit of digging, realized
- 7:31Speaker 5: this one is initially from my Millennial Money. Stole it
- 7:36Speaker 5: from Different Money, Yeah, which is like penultimate broke tips.
- 7:40Speaker 2: So we're kind of really scraping the bottom of the barrel.
- 7:42Speaker 2: Is heaping here but being very budget but taking from
- 7:45Speaker 2: Glenn James's community.
- 7:47Speaker 4: Glenn, sorry, Glenny.
- 7:49Speaker 2: He feels very generous of us taking from the reach
- 7:52Speaker 2: to give to the poor.
- 7:53Speaker 4: Yes, exactly.
- 7:55Speaker 5: No, but this is a really really good tip from Terry.
- 7:57Speaker 5: So this can kill a lot of birds with one stone.
- 7:59Speaker 5: So if you go to the website, you can find
- 8:02Speaker 5: one hundred and ninety nine plus freebies for your birthday.
- 8:06Speaker 5: So what you do is you sign up with all
- 8:07Speaker 5: these places so you'll find this on the My Millennial
- 8:10Speaker 5: Money website. Basically, you can either do this for yourself
- 8:13Speaker 5: on your birthday, go around and get a bunch of.
- 8:15Speaker 2: Freebies stunning, eat free the whole day.
- 8:19Speaker 5: Or if you have a child and you want to
- 8:21Speaker 5: do something that's a little bit cheap you can't really
- 8:24Speaker 5: afford gifts, or you can't really afford to take them
- 8:26Speaker 5: out or have a party, take that child out and
- 8:30Speaker 5: get them all a bunch.
- 8:31Speaker 4: Of free stuff.
- 8:32Speaker 2: Genius.
- 8:33Speaker 4: Everywhere you go, you'll find it.
- 8:35Speaker 5: You know, there's that boost smoothie that you can get
- 8:38Speaker 5: that's free on your birthday. There's a free ice cream
- 8:41Speaker 5: Baskin Robins. You used to love a Baskin Robins absolutely
- 8:45Speaker 5: so you can find so many places that offer something
- 8:48Speaker 5: free for your birthday. So check it out on the
- 8:50Speaker 5: My Millennial Money website. That is a mouthful.
- 8:53Speaker 2: How much to glean pay you to get his ad
- 8:56Speaker 2: on our podcast?
- 8:57Speaker 4: Lots of money and that's why I was able to
- 8:59Speaker 4: survive last week.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Yeah, well it's obviously lots of money because he spent
- 9:03Speaker 2: it all on his boat, didn't he.
- 9:05Speaker 6: Oh my.
- 9:09Speaker 2: Goodness, I'll be glad. Please don't hate me. Come on
- 9:11Speaker 2: our show again, meet your tips and tricks.
- 9:13Speaker 4: Please please, please please. The next one comes from at
- 9:15Speaker 4: Lease I Love I Love Alise.
- 9:18Speaker 5: So Alise kind of says, if you're eating at a
- 9:20Speaker 5: friend's house or a family member's house, this is something
- 9:22Speaker 5: I did mention last week that I did want to
- 9:23Speaker 5: also say this week, really reiterating it really yes, yes, yes,
- 9:27Speaker 5: it was intended for this week. Accidentally slipped up but
- 9:29Speaker 5: didn't give credit to Elise. So when you're eating at
- 9:32Speaker 5: a friend's house, you're eating anywhere really where there are
- 9:35Speaker 5: takeaway options available, maybe you have with lunch at work
- 9:38Speaker 5: or something like that. Personally, I get way too lazy
- 9:41Speaker 5: to take stuff home, especially because I live in a sharehouse.
- 9:43Speaker 5: I'm like, I only have one little compartment in the fridge.
- 9:46Speaker 5: I don't have space for all this stuff. If you
- 9:49Speaker 5: have the ability to take freebies where you can, wherever
- 9:53Speaker 5: that may be. If you're going and eating somewhere, if
- 9:55Speaker 5: you want to take takeaway, if you want to get
- 9:56Speaker 5: a doggie bag for one French fry, do it. If
- 10:00Speaker 5: you're eating at a restaurant, I should say, would just french fry.
- 10:03Speaker 5: If you can fit in French fry in a separate
- 10:07Speaker 5: stomach for French fries Beck.
- 10:09Speaker 4: That's fair because they always say do you want to
- 10:11Speaker 4: take it home? And I always just go.
- 10:15Speaker 2: They'll give you free takeaway containers which you can wash
- 10:17Speaker 2: out as well. In news yes exactly. Yeah, so those
- 10:21Speaker 2: are the community broke tips.
- 10:23Speaker 4: My personal one is.
- 10:25Speaker 5: This app that's called petrol Spy. So basically down with
- 10:28Speaker 5: this app, have it on your phone if you're driving around.
- 10:31Speaker 5: I kind of use it more so if I'm driving
- 10:33Speaker 5: to Sydney, for example, and you know that the highway
- 10:36Speaker 5: petrol stations can kind of like really bump the prices up.
- 10:39Speaker 5: I'll put in petrol spy the places that I'm going.
- 10:42Speaker 5: I'll have a look around and see if there are
- 10:43Speaker 5: towns on my way that yes, yes. But you can
- 10:49Speaker 5: use it anytime you can.
- 10:50Speaker 2: I do not want to drive to Sydney.
- 10:52Speaker 4: Don't push it too late, as someone who's broken down
- 10:54Speaker 4: on the highway, true one state to another. Don't push
- 10:58Speaker 4: it too late. Hey you later.
- 11:02Speaker 5: But yes, downloaded petrol spy and you can see kind
- 11:05Speaker 5: of like when the last time someone registered a price,
- 11:08Speaker 5: so you won't go there and it's like all of
- 11:11Speaker 5: a sudden, twenty cents more or something. You can't figure
- 11:13Speaker 5: out if it's quite recent.
- 11:14Speaker 2: Oh I love that. And the more people that use it, obviously,
- 11:16Speaker 2: the more updated the price. That's clear ooh love. All right, guys,
- 11:22Speaker 2: let's go to a really quick break on the flip side.
- 11:24Speaker 2: I want to talk to you about how to channel
- 11:25Speaker 2: funds to pay down your debts, and we get to
- 11:27Speaker 2: talk about how to split bills in a sharehouse, which
- 11:30Speaker 2: I think is going to be a very fun olive
- 11:32Speaker 2: oil discussion. Don't go anywhere, guys, Welcome back, guys.
- 11:39Speaker 4: Let's take a listen to the money dilemma.
- 11:43Speaker 2: Hi there, have you got a money dilemma you just
- 11:45Speaker 2: can't solve? The Sheese on the Money team is here
- 11:48Speaker 2: to help. Every week, we tackle your dilemmas, both big
- 11:51Speaker 2: and small, to answer your most burning money, career and
- 11:54Speaker 2: life questions. To get involved, simply head to our website
- 11:57Speaker 2: and leave us a short voice recording and you might
- 11:59Speaker 2: just find yourself on the show. Now, let's take a
- 12:02Speaker 2: listen to this week's money dilemma.
- 12:07Speaker 7: Hi there.
- 12:08Speaker 6: My money dilemma is that at the moment, I'm a
- 12:12Speaker 6: freelance acrobat and very lucky that I have an investment property.
- 12:18Speaker 2: But my dilemma is around looking at my help.
- 12:22Speaker 7: Debt, and whether it is more beneficial to put fifty
- 12:28Speaker 7: dollars a month into repaying my help debt, or should
- 12:32Speaker 7: I be putting that money towards investing, or should I
- 12:36Speaker 7: be putting it towards.
- 12:38Speaker 2: More rescular repayments my mortgage.
- 12:41Speaker 4: Any help would be best.
- 12:43Speaker 6: I can't really spare more than the fifty a month
- 12:46Speaker 6: to go all three ways, and any advice would be great.
- 12:49Speaker 2: I just freelance Acrobat. That is not where I thought.
- 12:53Speaker 2: This is a case is going to go.
- 12:55Speaker 4: That's the best job we've ever had.
- 12:56Speaker 2: So I tried to be real pervy and I go
- 13:00Speaker 2: googled freelance Acrobat income.
- 13:02Speaker 4: And imagine there's not a lot of data out there.
- 13:04Speaker 2: No, it just comes up with Adobe going how to
- 13:07Speaker 2: find a side hustle from home and how to download
- 13:10Speaker 2: this free pdfreda. I'm not telling me how much she earns,
- 13:14Speaker 2: and to be honest, I'm not gonna put in the
- 13:16Speaker 2: time and the energy to understanding that because it doesn't
- 13:19Speaker 2: matter what she earns. She did tell us how much
- 13:21Speaker 2: she has left over. Yes, so Beck Jess, yes you've
- 13:26Speaker 2: got some extra dosh at the end of the month.
- 13:28Speaker 2: How would you be viewing it Is that something that
- 13:31Speaker 2: you're putting against your hex Is that something that you're
- 13:33Speaker 2: putting against your home loan? I didn't realize she sounded
- 13:37Speaker 2: quite young. You're a freelance acrobat with your own investment property.
- 13:42Speaker 4: Pretty imagine? Yeah, true, Really that's so cool.
- 13:46Speaker 2: This is maybe an untapped industry change curious?
- 13:51Speaker 4: Yes, yes, yes, please, no, well you please go ahead.
- 13:59Speaker 5: I feel like you've I don't have hex steps, so
- 14:01Speaker 5: it must be nice.
- 14:03Speaker 4: I can't get invested.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Must be us. We're at the same table. Well, there
- 14:07Speaker 2: you go, there you go.
- 14:09Speaker 4: I mean, I'm just gonna parrot what I feel like
- 14:11Speaker 4: I've always heard you say. Okay, I don't know, I
- 14:13Speaker 4: don't know if that's fair. You want to go, I'm
- 14:16Speaker 4: Victoria to fine, Hello's Victoria speaking, But she picks up
- 14:20Speaker 4: the phone.
- 14:24Speaker 2: That made me feel a little bit. How don't you
- 14:27Speaker 2: pick up the phone?
- 14:29Speaker 6: Hello?
- 14:29Speaker 4: You say Victoria in a really specific way when you
- 14:32Speaker 4: pick up the phone. I feel like I've said this
- 14:33Speaker 4: to you before.
- 14:34Speaker 5: Hello, it's Victoria speaking, Victoria, Like it's like that's my name.
- 14:40Speaker 4: I feel like you're saying it's Victoria. But you can
- 14:42Speaker 4: just drop in the tea and you go Victoria.
- 14:47Speaker 2: How do you enter the phone? Hello, don't you say
- 14:52Speaker 2: your name?
- 14:52Speaker 3: That.
- 14:53Speaker 2: I feel like it was drilled into me as a
- 14:55Speaker 2: child to answer the phone politely. Hello, this is Victoria speaking.
- 15:00Speaker 2: I help you, like my house was made of customer service,
- 15:03Speaker 2: but like people.
- 15:04Speaker 4: Are calling you so they know it's Victoria speaking. Let's
- 15:06Speaker 4: get back on track.
- 15:07Speaker 2: Yes, sorry, our producer is like you guys are off
- 15:11Speaker 2: the hook.
- 15:12Speaker 4: Like the phone when you lived at home, and.
- 15:14Speaker 2: It was like to get off the phone. I want
- 15:19Speaker 2: to go on MSN.
- 15:20Speaker 4: Took me a second, but I got there. Okay. Anyway,
- 15:21Speaker 4: to parrot what I have heard victorious a many times before,
- 15:24Speaker 4: I believe is that hector is the one debt that
- 15:26Speaker 4: dies with you, which is a little morbid, but if
- 15:28Speaker 4: you die, it disappears, doesn't get passed on to anybody. Actually,
- 15:32Speaker 4: you know what, now that the hex indexation is higher,
- 15:35Speaker 4: perhaps this is a smadge different, But typically we would
- 15:37Speaker 4: have or I would have thought, the answer was the
- 15:40Speaker 4: potential rate of return on an investment, generally speaking, may
- 15:44Speaker 4: or may not be higher than the debt that you
- 15:46Speaker 4: would be occurring on a hex debt, which then also
- 15:48Speaker 4: disappears when you die. So like most people wouldn't priorities
- 15:51Speaker 4: paying it off historically. I don't know where we sit
- 15:54Speaker 4: now that the hex is index, now that the hex
- 15:56Speaker 4: is indexation, now that you know.
- 15:58Speaker 2: That the hex has been index, yeah, I can see
- 16:01Speaker 2: why it was challenging.
- 16:02Speaker 4: My one brain cell? Is you jumping your all?
- 16:05Speaker 1: Right?
- 16:06Speaker 2: Can I please take the brain cell button and have
- 16:08Speaker 2: a turn?
- 16:08Speaker 4: I would love that you you have the brain cell now.
- 16:11Speaker 2: So it really depends obviously on your own financial goals.
- 16:16Speaker 2: It's not necessarily what is better, because we could do
- 16:19Speaker 2: a whole heap of mats that tells you that the
- 16:22Speaker 2: best asset class in Australia to invest in that has
- 16:25Speaker 2: the highest return is actually shares, But that doesn't mean
- 16:28Speaker 2: that's what you want to buy. Like, go over to
- 16:30Speaker 2: justice side of the table and I say put your
- 16:32Speaker 2: house deposit in shares. She's gonna say, absolutely not. That
- 16:35Speaker 2: is not in line with my values. So just because
- 16:38Speaker 2: something has the best return does not mean it is
- 16:40Speaker 2: the best for you personally. So I think starting there
- 16:44Speaker 2: is really important. Jess is correct. Hex is the one
- 16:47Speaker 2: thing that if you lose your income, you don't have
- 16:49Speaker 2: to pay if you die. It doesn't get past your
- 16:52Speaker 2: friends or your family or whoever you see your next
- 16:54Speaker 2: of kin. Whereas your mortgage will obviously with HEX indexation
- 16:58Speaker 2: at seven point one percent this year, people are looking
- 17:02Speaker 2: at it a little bit differently, but it's going to
- 17:04Speaker 2: be indexed every single year, and it has been indexed
- 17:07Speaker 2: for the past few years. It's just never been at
- 17:09Speaker 2: a point that has I guess catastrophically offended people enough
- 17:13Speaker 2: for them to make a change. I didn't make any
- 17:17Speaker 2: changes based on indexation on my HEX step because at
- 17:20Speaker 2: the moment, I just really don't want to have a mortgage,
- 17:22Speaker 2: so I'd prefer my money to go there. But if
- 17:25Speaker 2: you look at the interest rate on my mortgage, which
- 17:27Speaker 2: currently now is that a vomit worthy five point five
- 17:30Speaker 2: percent versus my indexation on my HEX which is at
- 17:35Speaker 2: seven point four one percent, what you need to remember
- 17:37Speaker 2: is that seven point one percent was once off and
- 17:41Speaker 2: next year it could be lower or it could be different.
- 17:44Speaker 2: Whereas my mortgage is going to continue to cost me
- 17:48Speaker 2: five point five percent each and every single month, which
- 17:50Speaker 2: is bile. So it really depends on how you want
- 17:54Speaker 2: to calculate it or work it out. But I'd sit
- 17:56Speaker 2: down and go, well, what are my financial goals like
- 17:58Speaker 2: is this fifty dollars going to get me closer to
- 18:01Speaker 2: the holiday that I want to go on. Is that
- 18:03Speaker 2: more important than getting rid of my hextet? And one
- 18:05Speaker 2: of the things about hextet is it's kind of one
- 18:08Speaker 2: of the only debts that doesn't stop you from borrowing
- 18:10Speaker 2: more money like you can and I'm not saying that
- 18:13Speaker 2: this is good, but you can get personal loans, you
- 18:14Speaker 2: can get mortgages, or while you have HEX, it just
- 18:17Speaker 2: changes your borrowing capacity. But you already have a mortgage
- 18:20Speaker 2: and you already have that investment property. So I'm assuming
- 18:24Speaker 2: that smashing down your HEX is not the biggest priority,
- 18:26Speaker 2: because what happens when it's gone, right, Like, are you
- 18:30Speaker 2: using that cash flow for another financial goal? If so,
- 18:33Speaker 2: whilen't We're working towards it now. Like there's just lots
- 18:36Speaker 2: of questions and there's no real perfect answer. It's just
- 18:38Speaker 2: more well, what is more of value to you personally?
- 18:42Speaker 2: And what does that look like? Because as I said,
- 18:44Speaker 2: I could show you on a piece of paper what
- 18:48Speaker 2: the quote best asset class return on average over the
- 18:51Speaker 2: last thirty years has been, it will come out as shares.
- 18:55Speaker 2: That doesn't mean that people want to do that, like
- 18:56Speaker 2: exclusively with their money, so it really yeah, it depends.
- 19:00Speaker 2: Sorry for that roundabout answer.
- 19:02Speaker 5: If you do want a more in depth answer, you
- 19:05Speaker 5: can absolutely listen to the episode that we did about
- 19:08Speaker 5: Hex and Indexation are back in May, very sexy. Check
- 19:12Speaker 5: it out if you want great.
- 19:13Speaker 2: Love, this great app let's rage on good stuff. Yeah
- 19:17Speaker 2: you ready, juicy? Are you ready? All right? So this
- 19:22Speaker 2: week's community dilemma, you've slid into our dms. We are
- 19:26Speaker 2: on a roll when it comes to housemate topics, so
- 19:30Speaker 2: we're not gonna stop. This week's message sounded a lot
- 19:33Speaker 2: like this, Ready, guys, ready, staying on trend with the
- 19:37Speaker 2: roommate dilemmas, laughing, crying emoji face. I live in a
- 19:40Speaker 2: house of four girls, and all of us have partners
- 19:43Speaker 2: apart from one. The one who doesn't has rallied us
- 19:47Speaker 2: all together and said she thinks we need to negotiate
- 19:49Speaker 2: our bills as our boyfriends come over and use water
- 19:52Speaker 2: and electricity, et cetera. But on the flip side, we're
- 19:55Speaker 2: all gone at our boyfriend's houses half the time as well,
- 19:58Speaker 2: and she's the only one during that period of time
- 20:02Speaker 2: thoughts on what we should do s O S sounds
- 20:05Speaker 2: like it's break even. I would say, I don't really
- 20:09Speaker 2: still agreed, is that the answer? All?
- 20:11Speaker 1: Right?
- 20:11Speaker 2: Well by.
- 20:14Speaker 4: That is nice. Yeah, it just sounds like like I
- 20:17Speaker 4: totally get it.
- 20:18Speaker 5: If if they were always at home the partners included,
- 20:21Speaker 5: then I would understand that a lot more.
- 20:24Speaker 4: But really it's probably negligible.
- 20:26Speaker 5: I would say, if they're kind of like half at
- 20:28Speaker 5: home half of the partner's house, it kind of all
- 20:30Speaker 5: evens out, all comes out in the world.
- 20:32Speaker 2: Like if you're having your partner stay over like three
- 20:35Speaker 2: nights a week and then you're staying at their house
- 20:38Speaker 2: four nights a week. Just for clarity, is yeah, they're
- 20:41Speaker 2: saving one shower per week.
- 20:43Speaker 5: It's yet not really probably not worth like the awkward
- 20:47Speaker 5: conversation potentially a fight for you know, if you really
- 20:51Speaker 5: break down the numbers, it's probably not that much.
- 20:54Speaker 4: I would argue, really, if the partners, their chances are
- 20:57Speaker 4: the housemate of the partner is also there, if you're
- 21:00Speaker 4: sitting in the bedroom, ei there's one person in there
- 21:02Speaker 4: or two, same amount of electricities being used, like Jeremy.
- 21:06Speaker 4: Like the one argument I suppose could be made for
- 21:08Speaker 4: shower save water shower with partner, Sure, but I don't
- 21:11Speaker 4: think that could lead to a longer shower. But you know,
- 21:16Speaker 4: I feel like it's not enough, that it's not as
- 21:19Speaker 4: if in my mind, that's detrimentally inflating the cost of bills.
- 21:22Speaker 4: And if it is, like if they're leaving lights on everywhere,
- 21:24Speaker 4: maybe there's a conversation to be sure around hey, can
- 21:26Speaker 4: we just be mindful that if we're jumping from one
- 21:28Speaker 4: room to another, we're switching the lights off. But if
- 21:30Speaker 4: the environment trial laugh, But I don't think it matters
- 21:33Speaker 4: that much.
- 21:34Speaker 2: Maybe the food, maybe the food situation or if the
- 21:36Speaker 2: food is there, I think that's a situation. But I
- 21:38Speaker 2: would also like to go back to how you negotiated
- 21:41Speaker 2: the rooms to begin with, like are you paying rent
- 21:45Speaker 2: based on the room that you hold or are you
- 21:47Speaker 2: paying rent based on how many heads are in the house?
- 21:51Speaker 2: Because I feel like this goes two roots, and every
- 21:53Speaker 2: house I've ever lived in has always been you pay
- 21:56Speaker 2: rent based on the room that you're in, and so
- 21:59Speaker 2: like this room might be where three hundred and fifty
- 22:01Speaker 2: dollars a week, and if my partner stays over, well
- 22:04Speaker 2: that's part and pussle. I've now decided to share my space. However,
- 22:08Speaker 2: I do see the bill thing as being an issue.
- 22:12Speaker 2: I know that this could be fickle, but like from
- 22:15Speaker 2: this circumstance, I look at it and go, you know what,
- 22:18Speaker 2: it's easy, come, easygo, it's pretty even. But what if
- 22:22Speaker 2: your boyfriend doesn't have a job and all of your
- 22:25Speaker 2: housemates go to work and you go to work, and
- 22:26Speaker 2: then your boyfriend's just hanging out in your house with
- 22:28Speaker 2: a heater on full blast.
- 22:30Speaker 5: True, like that could be an issue. That's true, that's true,
- 22:34Speaker 5: we can talk about that.
- 22:35Speaker 2: But that doesn't seem to be what's going on here.
- 22:37Speaker 4: No, No, that would be a separate issue. I would
- 22:39Speaker 4: imagine altogether.
- 22:40Speaker 2: Really, why I are in my house without me?
- 22:41Speaker 5: Weird change, yes, but I think, yeah, at the end
- 22:46Speaker 5: of the day, if it is true, they all are
- 22:47Speaker 5: kind of like sharing each other's like they're going back
- 22:50Speaker 5: and forth between the partner's house and their house, and
- 22:52Speaker 5: they're I don't know, not really there all the time.
- 22:56Speaker 5: It kind of does even itself out, and it's not
- 22:59Speaker 5: worth having the commason. However, if everyone is always at
- 23:03Speaker 5: home and it's maybe like once a week one of
- 23:05Speaker 5: the people go to the partner's house or you know whatever,
- 23:08Speaker 5: then maybe it's worth having a look.
- 23:11Speaker 4: It sounds like the third housemate, the single housemate, is
- 23:13Speaker 4: feeling a bit put out. Sure, so it might even
- 23:16Speaker 4: just be a symptom of a deep issue, Like she's like,
- 23:18Speaker 4: there's all these people in my space, I'm the only
- 23:20Speaker 4: single person. I don't know how they feel about that
- 23:22Speaker 4: either way. That maybe they're just like, oh, like I
- 23:24Speaker 4: signed up to have three housemates and now I have five,
- 23:26Speaker 4: you know, so I feel that in my boat it
- 23:29Speaker 4: could be like a bigger conversation to be hard. But
- 23:31Speaker 4: I don't necessarily think that that means that the outcome
- 23:34Speaker 4: should be everyone needs to contribute financially. Depending on the.
- 23:37Speaker 2: Dynamics could be very different, right, Like, again, I've used
- 23:41Speaker 2: these examples in the past. If you and I just
- 23:44Speaker 2: lived together with beck and it was just the girls
- 23:46Speaker 2: and we're all singled, that dynamic is very different to
- 23:50Speaker 2: if three of us all have partners and our partners
- 23:53Speaker 2: come over. Because I feel like there's such a different
- 23:55Speaker 2: dynamic in a house because I've been through it where
- 23:58Speaker 2: I get a partner and then my partner now husband
- 24:00Speaker 2: comes over and we're cooking dinner together. It does feel
- 24:04Speaker 2: a lot more like you're living separate lives. In the
- 24:07Speaker 2: same space as opposed to historically because I lived with
- 24:11Speaker 2: my best friend for a long time and we are
- 24:12Speaker 2: still best friends, so it all worked out really well.
- 24:15Speaker 2: I just remember when her partner would come over, because
- 24:17Speaker 2: I was single at that point, I always felt like
- 24:19Speaker 2: I was in their way, like I would, you know,
- 24:21Speaker 2: maybe not come out of my room as often because
- 24:23Speaker 2: they'd be in the kitchen cooking, and I didn't want
- 24:25Speaker 2: to impose on their relationship or what they were doing
- 24:27Speaker 2: or what they were cooking. And I know that that
- 24:29Speaker 2: wasn't the case, because like I love both of them
- 24:31Speaker 2: and vice versa. But I can see how maybe she's
- 24:34Speaker 2: not feeling as comfortable in her space and maybe this
- 24:37Speaker 2: is a deeper way of her saying, hey, you're spending
- 24:40Speaker 2: lots of time in my space. I want some type
- 24:41Speaker 2: of remuneration for this, and maybe that's where that's going.
- 24:44Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, whatever and else kind of think though.
- 24:47Speaker 2: So we asked a few questions. So first things first,
- 24:49Speaker 2: we said, do you live in a sharehouse where partners
- 24:51Speaker 2: stay regularly? Thirteen percent said yes, all of us have partners.
- 24:55Speaker 2: Seventy one percent of you said yes, some of us
- 24:59Speaker 2: have partners, and sixteen percent of you said we are
- 25:02Speaker 2: single ladies, and then we said if yes, have they
- 25:06Speaker 2: ever contributed to bills? So like, have the partners contributed
- 25:09Speaker 2: to bills? Eighty three percent said nah, not at all,
- 25:12Speaker 2: twelve percent said they have once before or rarely, and
- 25:15Speaker 2: six percent said they regularly contribute. Interesting, I want to
- 25:19Speaker 2: know that. Then we asked the question how many visits
- 25:23Speaker 2: per week warrants some cash to be coughed up. Forty
- 25:26Speaker 2: seven percent of you said between five and seven visits
- 25:29Speaker 2: a week. Yeah, twenty eight percent said three to four visits,
- 25:33Speaker 2: two percent said one to two visits. Sir, and your
- 25:38Speaker 2: boyven staying over one night a week actually missed.
- 25:41Speaker 4: I would be missed.
- 25:43Speaker 2: That's a good word. But twenty three percent of you
- 25:46Speaker 2: said I don't think they should contribute at all. Then
- 25:51Speaker 2: there was lots of responses. I feel like they've been
- 25:53Speaker 2: quite similar to ours. Someone said that poor girl having
- 25:56Speaker 2: to live with up to three extra people in the house.
- 25:58Speaker 4: Yeah, I love it.
- 26:00Speaker 2: This is where we're different. I'd be like, get out
- 26:02Speaker 2: of my house, how are you? I did not consent
- 26:04Speaker 2: to this cozy.
- 26:05Speaker 4: I think it depends on where that person is sitting,
- 26:07Speaker 4: because I've been in a house situation. There was three
- 26:09Speaker 4: of us, two of us have partners, one of us
- 26:11Speaker 4: did not, and the person who did not have a partner,
- 26:13Speaker 4: I think was in the place where she wanted a partner,
- 26:17Speaker 4: and so I feel like that compounded the thing she
- 26:21Speaker 4: was feeling a little bit. So I think she like
- 26:24Speaker 4: she never said anything about it, but.
- 26:26Speaker 2: One today partner wanted your partner. They could be very
- 26:28Speaker 2: different dynamics. Well that's it. You just you don't know.
- 26:32Speaker 4: You don't know what they're feeling, you don't know what
- 26:33Speaker 4: they're thinking.
- 26:35Speaker 2: Ron, you should move out on your own. Someone else said,
- 26:38Speaker 2: if the other housemates are gone half the time, it
- 26:41Speaker 2: kind of evens out. Nothing should be paid. Agreed. Someone said,
- 26:44Speaker 2: it looks like that housemate just needs to be shown
- 26:46Speaker 2: some more love.
- 26:47Speaker 4: Yeah, maybe they're feeling left out. Maybe, But also again,
- 26:52Speaker 4: like it's it comes back to it's not other people's responsibility.
- 26:55Speaker 2: Someone said, one hundred percent, they should contribute if they're
- 26:58Speaker 2: they're for a majority of the time. I have a
- 27:01Speaker 2: similar story. I'm going to message it to you can't wait.
- 27:04Speaker 2: Someone said, if they're staying over, then I'd say they're
- 27:08Speaker 2: just as good as living there too. I don't know.
- 27:10Speaker 2: I just feel like it's all about timing. Like I
- 27:14Speaker 2: started having a conversation with my now husband about whether
- 27:17Speaker 2: he should be contributing at my sharehouse when I lived
- 27:20Speaker 2: in a sharehouse and we just met because we started
- 27:23Speaker 2: staying over a lot of nights per week, and ultimately
- 27:27Speaker 2: we were like, actually, let's just move in with each other.
- 27:30Speaker 2: So that is good. I mean, so far, so good.
- 27:32Speaker 2: We've been together four years, we're married, but like, I
- 27:35Speaker 2: probably wouldn't recommend moving in with your partner if you've
- 27:38Speaker 2: been dating for less than a year. I'm kind of
- 27:40Speaker 2: a Gohard go home girl, you know. I love that.
- 27:43Speaker 2: Love it love that someone else said if they're having
- 27:45Speaker 2: meals a slash using food, they should definitely contribute there
- 27:49Speaker 2: as I'm assuming it is shared. I think condiments are
- 27:53Speaker 2: a big source of contention.
- 27:54Speaker 4: True.
- 27:55Speaker 2: In a home we spoke about the olive oil toilet
- 27:57Speaker 2: papers that yes, toilet paper everywhere. Housemates used to dodge
- 28:03Speaker 2: it or like get really annoyed. Miffed is the word
- 28:06Speaker 2: of the day. If you had not bought the right
- 28:10Speaker 2: toilet paper even though well broke you unie students and okay,
- 28:15Speaker 2: now now that you have this solid income, Jessica, you've
- 28:18Speaker 2: been to my house. You know I buy quilt. We're
- 28:20Speaker 2: not going to have this conversation. But as a poor
- 28:23Speaker 2: UNI student, I'm sorry. I'm not going to be spending that.
- 28:26Speaker 4: Can't buy Who gives a crap?
- 28:28Speaker 2: Absolutely not.
- 28:29Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 28:29Speaker 2: Also, that's not that soft.
- 28:31Speaker 4: Who gives a crap?
- 28:32Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 28:32Speaker 4: Not, that's it's not meant to be. Oh, it's recycled.
- 28:35Speaker 2: Someone else said, look, it's a fair request. If usage
- 28:38Speaker 2: has increased, your power bills together and look at your
- 28:41Speaker 2: spend over the last three months and see if it's increased.
- 28:44Speaker 2: That's fair.
- 28:45Speaker 4: That is a very good idea. That's a very good
- 28:48Speaker 4: idea to finance.
- 28:50Speaker 2: Yeah. I feel like I've done this a few times,
- 28:52Speaker 2: like with different team members who have had housemates situations.
- 28:55Speaker 2: I'm like, okay, well I'll sit down and I'll calculate
- 28:57Speaker 2: it for you. No worries. We don't let you know
- 28:59Speaker 2: exactly what is atually fair and equitable, and you can
- 29:01Speaker 2: take that back to the team and let them know
- 29:03Speaker 2: that I'm in on this too. Now it goes very well.
- 29:07Speaker 2: Someone else said, to cover any discrepancies in bills as
- 29:10Speaker 2: they are paid, set an amount that you put into
- 29:12Speaker 2: a shared Kitty, this was really important for me to
- 29:15Speaker 2: also have it in writing. I feel like that was
- 29:18Speaker 2: from experience. Maybe we've been there before.
- 29:21Speaker 4: Baby.
- 29:22Speaker 2: Someone else said, can you please add I'm just here
- 29:26Speaker 2: to read the results because I'm nosy and I don't
- 29:29Speaker 2: want to contribute.
- 29:30Speaker 4: I do the same thing I do apology.
- 29:31Speaker 2: Can you just to answer our questions?
- 29:33Speaker 4: Say you know the results, answer the.
- 29:34Speaker 2: Poll, answer the poll, don't skew our data. Contribute and
- 29:38Speaker 2: I mean we always have no answer. Just contribute because
- 29:42Speaker 2: our content is free. Free take our data collection as payment,
- 29:48Speaker 2: not adding it. You know what we've done for.
- 29:51Speaker 5: Luid just angry.
- 29:55Speaker 2: I'm not angry. I just think if you're the housemate
- 29:59Speaker 2: in the house that and bought olive oil recently, it's
- 30:01Speaker 2: time to pick some up.
