Transcript
- 0:21Hello everyone, welcome back to this week's episode of Mocktail Minutes.
- 0:25This is Bailey.
- 0:26And this is Brianna.
- 0:28This week we are talking about grocery staples.
- 0:31It's been a highly requested topic, so why not add it in?
- 0:36I am also, well before we get started, I am drinking a Olipop, the ginger ale flavor.
- 0:42Not bad, not bad.
- 0:43Nine grams of fiber, so a little fiber boost there.
- 0:48Yeah, I haven't had that one.
- 0:49It's actually really good.
- 0:51I am having, what am I having?
- 0:52I'm having the Bubz Naturals electrolytes and then I mixed some creatine in there, some thorn creatine.
- 0:58I'm back on my workout game.
- 1:00Oh, nice.
- 1:01I took a couple weeks off and I am, I'm so sore.
- 1:06Don't you love that?
- 1:07Sometimes I actually kind of like taking off and then coming back and feeling that.
- 1:11Really good soreness again.
- 1:13That's what I did.
- 1:14And I have this like toxic trait where every time I get back into my routine, I'm like, you know what?
- 1:21I'm going to be the biggest bank for my buck.
- 1:22I'm going to do a leg day.
- 1:23And so now I'm like walking around like a baby deer, like trying to get in and out of my car.
- 1:28Like, don't like me.
- 1:29Yeah.
- 1:30And I love leg day.
- 1:31Like I would just do leg day every time if it didn't make me look like a pizza from not doing upper body, but Pizza.
- 1:40Well, I guess it would be opposite.
- 1:42Usually, well, yeah, usually Guys that look like a pizza because they like to do a bunch of arms and they skip leg day.
- 1:49We're on the opposite.
- 1:50I always I always look at like, you know, if I come across Instagram, like guys that lift a lot of weights and was like, let me see your calves.
- 1:58And you're like, yeah, do you do like that for no good reason?
- 2:03I just like to, I don't know, judge them from afar, but I'm the same.
- 2:07I love leg day.
- 2:09It's so much, it's, it takes a lot of talking myself into getting to the arms and upper body.
- 2:15I'm like, Oh, I need to, I need to even out, I guess.
- 2:19We all have stuff we like that is a good point though about creatine because creatine it is kind of one of those supplements that gives you a it's kind of like a shortcut but not really but it's like it's one of those things that can get you quicker results to kind of help you build your muscle but it's also one of those things where it's not just going to be a magic powder like you still got to work out with it you get some benefits if you're not working out but You can't just create muscle from nowhere.
- 2:46So you're going to get the most bang for your buck if you're taking it while you're doing strength training workouts.
- 2:51Yeah.
- 2:51it's really studied.
- 2:53It's super safe.
- 2:54It's pretty inexpensive.
- 2:56Like I joke when people are like, what's the best, like fat burning supplement.
- 3:01Creatine.
- 3:02Like, it helps you build muscle.
- 3:04People don't like that answer, but.
- 3:06But also people really like that answer because we like to have something that's going to speed up the process.
- 3:12Yeah, and something that's not going to break the bank.
- 3:14And that's like proven to actually help get you the results you're trying to get.
- 3:20Maybe we'll do, maybe we'll do an episode on Creatine.
- 3:25So we talked about protein last week, so that'll give some good insights.
- 3:28We've talked about strength training, but yeah, Creatine would be a good topic.
- 3:33I think so.
- 3:34Right.
- 3:35Well, moving along to what are we talking about this week?
- 3:38We're so yeah, we're talking about the grocery staples.
- 3:41When we had posted our giveaway, we asked, what do you guys want to hear about?
- 3:45Because like we've talked about this podcast is for you to help you.
- 3:50And we had so many responses about like grocery staples to have on hand, like grocery shopping tips.
- 3:56All types of topics around there.
- 3:58So we're going to tackle it today.
- 4:00Yeah, this was, and it kind of made me think like, duh, why don't we have an episode on this already?
- 4:06But we were talking before we started recording and we feel like it's one of those things like, we're like, oh, people wouldn't be interested, but so many people requested this.
- 4:13So let us know things you like, because sometimes Bailey and I, it goes over our heads.
- 4:18We're like, oh, people don't want to know that.
- 4:20Like it's just stuff that we do every day because it's part of our job.
- 4:24And it's part of, it's part of like what we do all day long.
- 4:28So it's, there's a lot of things that we don't think about to share, or we don't think about you finding interesting because to us, it's just something, Oh, they probably already know.
- 4:39And so we don't want to bore you, but.
- 4:41There's no such thing.
- 4:43We will cover any topic you want us to cover.
- 4:45So yeah, just let us know.
- 4:48And I think that's honestly something.
- 4:51So I'm writing my Busy Professionals ebook for, well, Weight Loss for Busy Professionals ebook.
- 4:56It's kind of like a guidebook.
- 4:57But while I've been writing that, I've been trying to decide what all to put into it.
- 5:01And that is something my sister brought up to me.
- 5:03She's like, well, think about things that you do just naturally that normal people don't do.
- 5:08I'm like, Okay, that's hard.
- 5:12It's harder than you think.
- 5:13Yeah, but she was saying like because I have a blender on my counter I make smoothies every morning.
- 5:19So I keep the blender on my counter because it's nice easy ready to go and Different things like what oils to cook with or she's like brought up nutrition labels.
- 5:28Yeah, and I was like, okay so it's just like all these things that I Have been programmed to do because I'm a dietitian.
- 5:36Yeah.
- 5:36And this, we just don't always think about.
- 5:38That you guys would find interesting.
- 5:40Yeah, that'll, that's gonna be super helpful.
- 5:42I'm excited for that.
- 5:43Stay tuned.
- 5:44I'm hoping, it was supposed to be done last weekend, but The weekend weather was very nice, so I spent quality time with Joshua and You have to, you have to take it while it lasts.
- 5:54Yes.
- 5:55Like, it's not gonna be nice.
- 5:58Well, Missouri weather just punches you in the face sometimes.
- 6:01Literally, it's supposed to be 80 degrees on Wednesday, and then we're going to drop way back down Thursday, Friday, and be like 30s again.
- 6:08So, yeah.
- 6:09Take it while you can.
- 6:10No, that's exciting.
- 6:11Yeah.
- 6:11It'll be available soon.
- 6:14So, let's jump into the grocery staples.
- 6:16I guess to start with it when thinking about these staples.
- 6:19I think about items that I can keep on hand that are not going to Expire within like the week or they're not going to go bad So like fresh berries, I mean, they're a staple to have in the house But it's not like a pantry staple or something to just always think of This is going to be more geared towards like what are things that we can just kind of pick up as we go along To keep in the freezer and the pan pantry that are not gonna go bad.
- 6:46So that way, when we have these items on hand, it is so much easier to throw a meal together when life happens.
- 6:55Plans don't work out.
- 6:57We get home late.
- 6:58Now we can just throw things together.
- 7:00Instead of describing a box of cereal, we can actually have a full meal and that's going to make a big difference there.
- 7:07Oh yeah.
- 7:07Something you can do when like life happens, right?
- 7:09Because we're always like.
- 7:11Really?
- 7:12We feel good.
- 7:13We're like, Oh, this week's going to be great.
- 7:15Everything's just going to be planned out.
- 7:16It's going to go awesome.
- 7:18And then like life hits and suddenly you're busy.
- 7:21And I feel like this is a little bit different than some other nutrition advice you might hear on the Internet.
- 7:25Because I've heard so often, like, only shop the perimeter of the grocery store.
- 7:30Because it's like mostly fresh foods, which obviously we love fresh foods.
- 7:33But like Bailey said, they don't last very long.
- 7:36Still get them, still get them, still use them.
- 7:38But like, it is so useful to have good quality staples on hand that from the middle of the grocery store that you could use to put together meals.
- 7:49So.
- 7:50In general, that's a good, little general rule of thumb.
- 7:53Yeah, the more you shop the perimeter, the more whole foods you're going to get.
- 7:57But you're also going to miss out on like chickpeas and beans and freeze dried fruit and...
- 8:07Yeah, like your nuts, your chia seeds, all kinds of stuff, like so many things.
- 8:12Yeah, so you can definitely shop the metal aisles.
- 8:16And like I said, when you have these items on hand, you're gonna be able to handle life so much easier.
- 8:23So what we teach in Metabolism Makeover is to build your meals based off of Protein, healthy fat, fiber.
- 8:29Those are three things we want to prioritize at every meal.
- 8:32So I guess let's go through like some protein items we can keep on hand.
- 8:37So I'm a big fan of rotisserie chicken, but that's, you know, technically still fresh, but you know, it lasts for a little bit.
- 8:45I like frozen chicken.
- 8:48So like the grill, like frozen grilled, like strip.
- 8:51You can add to things some of the nuggets, like just bare tenders, those sort of meats I like to have on hand for a quick, let me throw something together.
- 9:02Like you can make a wrap with it, a salad, you could just add it to your plate with like some veggies, whatever it is.
- 9:06If you have it on hand, you don't need to pre make the protein.
- 9:10I Guess that's like meat.
- 9:11Other than that, I like to think of like plant based proteins.
- 9:15So like beans, chickpeas, like All those, those are great.
- 9:19Chickpea pasta, like stuff that's going to get you some protein.
- 9:24Yeah.
- 9:24Kind of add to that protein source.
- 9:26I would also add, so I guess when it comes to protein, most of mine are freezer items too, but like frozen shrimp that's already cooked and detailed and de veined and de everything, so then you literally, yeah, you just.
- 9:40Thaw out, you can throw it in with any vegetables, so you got a meal there.
- 9:45So frozen shrimp, doing frozen like salmon filets or any type of fish filet, usually those like a tilapia will thaw out pretty quickly.
- 9:54So those are nice to have on hand.
- 9:56Or I found salmon patties before.
- 9:59Those are good.
- 10:01Turkey burgers, beef patties, like the ones that are already patty, they're frozen.
- 10:05You just gotta cook them from frozen.
- 10:08So I feel like it also depends on like the stores you're around, because when I used to live right next to a Trader Joe's, I felt like there were so many good freezer options, because they have like the turkey burgers that are like delicious, and they have a lot of good frozen meat options.
- 10:24A lot of mine I get at Costco.
- 10:26Okay, I get most of mine.
- 10:29I usually go to either Aldi or Schmucks.
- 10:32Yeah, I like Costco because, well, I have a lot of people that I gotta feed too, so it just makes sense, but they have like these really good salmon fillets that are already, because I cannot cook salmon.
- 10:43Okay, I've tried.
- 10:44It's not a bad.
- 10:45We actually did it one night.
- 10:46Josh cooked it for me on the grill, like, had the scales.
- 10:49So someone at my office, went to Alaska, caught all this fish, and brought it to my chiropractor here, and he gave me some.
- 10:57So it was literally, like, fresh from Alaska, had the scale on it and everything, and Josh cooked it on the grill.
- 11:04It was pretty good.
- 11:05It was good.
- 11:05And it was easy.
- 11:07Maybe you're gonna try the grill.
- 11:09I've never done it that way.
- 11:10I've always tried baking it.
- 11:11I've tried air frying it.
- 11:12Air frying is like decent, but like for me I'm just so picky.
- 11:15So Costco has these like pre flavored ones and they're like vacuum sealed and you just take it out of your freezer and bake from frozen and they're delicious.
- 11:25Yeah, that would be nice and easy.
- 11:27I've heard a lot of people like the air fryer ones.
- 11:29We honestly don't have salmon a lot at our house because Josh doesn't eat it, so I'm just eating it.
- 11:35So we'll have it occasionally for like grilling, then he'll grill a steak and he'll grill me a salmon.
- 11:39But having like the salmon patties or the salmon filets are nice and simple ways to kind of get it in.
- 11:46But really those frozen meats you can't go wrong with.
- 11:48And sometimes it's like a chicken strip night too.
- 11:51Yeah, that's what I told moms all the times.
- 11:56I'm like, I know one thing you guys have nuggets and tenders.
- 12:00It is okay to add those to your plate too.
- 12:03Like they're such an easy source of protein.
- 12:06Do it.
- 12:07And they're delicious.
- 12:08Even if they aren't the best option, if that is.
- 12:12The better option.
- 12:13Great.
- 12:14Go for it.
- 12:14Even like the chicken patties.
- 12:16Oh, I love those so much growing up.
- 12:18So we usually have chicken patties on hand as well.
- 12:22And then I was reading the label because I was like, what?
- 12:25This dinner just never really fills me up.
- 12:27I'm like, it's decent.
- 12:28Yeah.
- 12:28There's only like 10, 12 grams of protein per patty.
- 12:33So then now I just do two patties.
- 12:35I'm like, okay, now I'm getting a little bit more protein, but Kind of look at those labels, too, to help you decide.
- 12:41Other protein options, they're not necessarily frozen, but they last a little, they let, they're refrigerated, so they'll last a little longer.
- 12:49Like, Greek yogurt, great thing to have on hand.
- 12:52Cottage cheese, doing, Eggs.
- 12:56Eggs are literally, no matter what, if I'm at the grocery store, I'm going to buy a pack of eggs because they last like forever.
- 13:03And you can use them for so many things.
- 13:06You can use them for breakfast, lunch, dinner, hard boiled, scrambled, fried.
- 13:11Mix them in with other ingredients.
- 13:12Protein pancakes.
- 13:13Like, there's so many things you can do with eggs.
- 13:16You must grab eggs every time you go to the store.
- 13:18Yeah, that's like a must.
- 13:20I know it's, this is for like my busy people out there.
- 13:24This is ridiculous.
- 13:25I know that it is.
- 13:26Cause it's so easy to boil eggs.
- 13:28I will buy a normal thing of eggs and then I'll buy a thing of pre hard boiled eggs.
- 13:34Hey, just whatever works.
- 13:36I'll do it.
- 13:38Yeah.
- 13:38Greek yogurt, cottage cheese.
- 13:41What else is in the fridge?
- 13:42You can get a really good, like.
- 13:44Whatever milk or milk alternative that has protein to people forget about that.
- 13:49Back to the freezer I liked it's my I've been doing this lately Frozen edamame.
- 13:55Oh, yeah protein It's like and sometimes it'll be like chicken tenders frozen edamame with some hard boiled eggs and like some mixed greens And that's a salad, you know, like look at free Bagged salad.
- 14:10Okay, like we're talking convenient foods, but I love eggs.
- 14:15Well, protein powder too would be a good pantry staple and I, I literally always have smoothie ingredients on hand and yeah, there have been some days where I have, because usually it's a smoothie for breakfast, but then.
- 14:29Like when life happens, I get home late, do not want to cook dinner or don't have dinner stuff on hand because I failed to plan, I will throw together a smoothie.
- 14:38So having different smoothie items on hand is going to be helpful too.
- 14:43Beef jerky or like beef sticks, turkey sticks, those are good too for protein.
- 14:48Beef, yeah, I, I always have like a good beef stick.
- 14:50Again, I get those at Costco.
- 14:51They're just a better bang for your buck.
- 14:53You know cheese cubes.
- 14:55That's like another thing my kids have been really into.
- 14:58They will not eat string cheese right now or sliced cheese, but they will have cubed cheese.
- 15:04So that's what we're into right now.
- 15:06Like I'll put together like a little lunchable type snack.
- 15:09Cube cheese, beef sticks, some crackers.
- 15:12Will they eat a cheese stick if you cut it into cubes?
- 15:16I'm gonna try it because I have so many string cheese like cheese sticks in my fridge right now because again Costco they're like here's your 57 string cheeses and then they decided oh you know what these this this week we don't like it.
- 15:31I've been eating it, but I'm gonna try it.
- 15:33I'm gonna try and see because they've been real bougie They like like the Colby Jack like oh, yeah, and I get it.
- 15:40It's good, but I'm also like you guys it's not that different it's more of a fat source, I would say.
- 15:45So, I would classify them as a healthy fat that adds to your protein.
- 15:48So, doing any types of nut butters, having a variety of different nuts on hand.
- 15:53So, your peanuts, your almonds, walnuts, cashews, pistachios, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts.
- 16:01You have so many options there to have on hand.
- 16:04Also, like pumpkin seeds Hello.
- 16:08Well, like your oils to cook with.
- 16:09Olive oil, avocado oil, sesame oil.
- 16:14Yeah, yeah.
- 16:16All your oils, all your nut butters, nuts, seeds, like chia seeds even.
- 16:21Flax seeds.
- 16:21I know we use these for fiber also, but they're, you know.
- 16:24They're fat.
- 16:26Even like the olive, like the olive packs.
- 16:29Yeah.
- 16:30Those are a good one.
- 16:31Those are easier ones to like, if you need to throw something like again, sometimes the convenience foods are a little bit more pricey, but like, if that's the make or break it for you to be able to like throw something together in the morning, just do it because odds are you're spending a lot of money outside of your house, like going and running to get lunch anyway.
- 16:48So like I'll do the little RX butter packets.
- 16:52For like some fats, I'll do like the pre packaged olives, like those are easy things that I can like throw in my bag and go.
- 17:00Could I just get a big thing of it and dibby it out?
- 17:04It's a good, but I'm not going to.
- 17:06So, yeah.
- 17:08And that's where it comes to just deciding what works for you.
- 17:11Like if you're like, that is absolutely not in the budget.
- 17:13Great.
- 17:14Grab a big jar and dibby it out then.
- 17:17And dibby it out.
- 17:18So.
- 17:19Just figuring out what kind of works for you, where it's going to make sense for you to buy the convenience, convenience counterparts, and then even, it doesn't have to be like every week you buy those, but if you're like, this week I know is insane, I am not going to cut my vegetables, buy the pre chopped.
- 17:35But that doesn't mean next week you can't save a little bit of money.
- 17:38Bye.
- 17:39Buying the full thing.
- 17:40So just navigating it that way, seeing how your week looks, seeing what's going to be most beneficial.
- 17:45And I know it can seem like, all right, well, if I buy this thing of grapes, it's not, it's going to be more expensive or the same price as cereal.
- 17:54Well, when we think about that, if we buy cereal compared to grapes, I mean, either of them by themselves, it's not really going to keep us full for very long, but at least with those grapes, you're getting vitamins, you're getting minerals, you're getting some fiber, you're getting some hydration even.
- 18:10So you're going to get a lot more benefits where cereal is going to just kind of be a filler food.
- 18:16It's not to say to never have cereal or cereal is bad or anything.
- 18:20I love cereal.
- 18:22But I also know cereal is not going to go away.
- 18:25So I have it when I want to.
- 18:27Actually, my last box went stale, which never used to happen.
- 18:33But when it comes to cereal, and you know foods aren't going to like disappear forever.
- 18:41Then you can be more intentional about when you want to include them, how you want to include them.
- 18:45Cereal, for example, is one, like, even if I were to have Fruity Pebbles, because I do love a Fruity Pebbles full cereal, I will actually take protein powder, mix it with my milk, dump it in my cereal, and then I'll sprinkle, like, chia seeds and hemp seeds on top of it to revamp my cereal.
- 19:02Now it's actually, like, more of a meal, not just a blood sugar spike that's gonna make me feel really tired and crabby and...
- 19:09Add to information, those types of fun things.
- 19:12Yeah, yeah, and that's why it's like good to always have these little staples on hand, because then you can do things like that, like maybe you have not such a nutritious meal, like our options, but you can make it into something much more nutritious, give it more bang for your buck.
- 19:28Because you have these things on hand.
- 19:30So yeah, I'm glad that you mentioned hemp seeds.
- 19:32That's another thing that I always have in hand.
- 19:35Yeah.
- 19:36Add some protein to that.
- 19:38If you need like five, eight, 10 grams of protein, sprinkle some hemp seeds on there.
- 19:44Dana, one of the other Metabolism Makeover coaches, I think you've talked about doing this before too, where you sprinkle the hemp seeds on like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
- 19:51Yeah.
- 19:51Easy peasy lemon squeezy.
- 19:56That's great.
- 19:57Yeah, you're not gonna take and I think like peanut butter and jelly is pretty good.
- 20:02But yeah, it's up that protein.
- 20:04So simple.
- 20:05I put those things in everything.
- 20:08oatmeal, smoothie, yogurt, cottage cheese, literally anything.
- 20:13There's no limit.
- 20:15Other things with that, I would say like coconut, like coconut oil, coconut flakes, I have coconut milk on hand at all times.
- 20:25Those are all great things for...
- 20:27Canned coconut too.
- 20:29Yeah, canned coconut.
- 20:31Yeah, you can add those to like pasta or like the crock like crock pot.
- 20:35I think we have a recipe for it.
- 20:37It's like a coconut chicken.
- 20:38Literally, you just put chicken, coconut, and season it up, and then you can add like steamed vegetables to it.
- 20:45Easy meal.
- 20:45It's something that I always have on hand because I use that a lot for dairy substitutions with not doing.
- 20:51Dairy items.
- 20:52I use coconut milk instead of like when it calls for evaporated milk or, I don't know, like creamy soups or something like that, I will use a coconut milk.
- 21:02So that is something that I do always have on hand as well.
- 21:05Those are such good options and they don't expire, you know, like can.
- 21:09Coconut, canned beans, like all those things, like they're going to last you a really long time.
- 21:14And if you've never used the canned coconut and you're like, why the heck would I put that on chicken?
- 21:19It's not like a pina colada type coconut that we think of because I thought the same thing too.
- 21:26It's when you get unsweetened canned coconut, it's, it's pretty bland.
- 21:30I mean, it has a hint of coconut, but it's not the pina colada type coconut that we typically think of.
- 21:36Yeah, it's not, it's like.
- 21:38It's similar to like when you use coconut oil, like you kind of taste it, but it's not like this overly sweet, like islandy.
- 21:47Yeah.
- 21:47Like I use it in tater tot casserole, biscuits and gravy.
- 21:51I use it in savory dishes, but then I also will use it in smoothies too.
- 21:56So that's, that's a really good one.
- 21:57An easy, easy one to have on hand.
- 22:00So I guess fiber.
- 22:01You want to cover fiber?
- 22:03Yeah.
- 22:04Let's do fiber.
- 22:04Cause the only other fat that I can think of is like, Grass fed butter.
- 22:09Yeah.
- 22:10That's it.
- 22:10And like ghee, like those things you keep in the fridge.
- 22:13I'm bad at this.
- 22:14See, this is like something I don't even think about.
- 22:16What else is, you know?
- 22:18Okay, fiber.
- 22:19So obviously you're going to get fiber from your fresh fruits and vegetables.
- 22:23We love that, but something that goes, it lasts a little bit longer in my house and sometimes it's easier to prepare is frozen fruit, frozen veggies, like frozen vegetables last forever.
- 22:37And they're so easy to make, like, you can get a bag of frozen broccoli.
- 22:41Like, you can forget about that sucker for like, 6 months.
- 22:43So you get a bag of broccoli.
- 22:45You better remember it, like, because in six days, it's going to be Smelly.
- 22:49Watering in your fridge.
- 22:51Yeah.
- 22:52Fruits, vegetables, I mean, Canned vegetables.
- 22:56Yeah.
- 22:57Which ones?
- 22:58Canned.
- 22:59Oh, yes.
- 23:00Canned vegetables.
- 23:01I like using canned vegetables, like, if you're going to do soups or, like, crockpot meals.
- 23:05I think people are really scared to use frozen and canned things.
- 23:10I know, like, when I was, like, in my big, like, ooh, I'm going to eat clean, like, I was like, ooh, like, canned vegetables is cheating.
- 23:17Like, those are so bad, but they're not.
- 23:19And sometimes they even have a little bit higher of vitamin and minerals, like, in them because they're canned or frozen.
- 23:27Much closer after like picking then, you know, your fresh broccoli that you're going to get the store.
- 23:32So there's nothing wrong with canned and frozen.
- 23:35Yeah.
- 23:35Other things.
- 23:36Yeah.
- 23:37We've talked about like the cheese seeds and flax seeds.
- 23:39We did mention those.
- 23:39Those will add some fiber, but also thinking about starchy carbs with which ones we want to include higher fiber options.
- 23:47Those are going to add to the fiber as well.
- 23:49So your beans, your lentils, that chickpea pasta that we mentioned like quinoa, wild rice.
- 23:57Those are some higher fiber, starchy carbs too.
- 24:01Yeah.
- 24:01And those are always, I like to have all those on hand, to be honest.
- 24:07Yeah.
- 24:07And I like the Bonza brand for chickpea.
- 24:10I know not everybody likes that brand, it's just like a go to.
- 24:13I like it.
- 24:14The schnooks bread is actually really good too.
- 24:16And Aldi will have, they've had black bean edamame and chickpea pasta.
- 24:22So they have some different options.
- 24:23Now the edamame and the black bean might be a little bit harder to transition your family to because the edamame, I mean, it's green.
- 24:30It looks like grass when you cook it.
- 24:33And then the black bean one, I mean, it's black noodles.
- 24:36So it doesn't look like your typical noodle either.
- 24:39And I think that can kind of taste a little bit different.
- 24:41I don't mind the taste.
- 24:42But that's not the case.
- 24:44It's like a consistency.
- 24:46Mm hmm.
- 24:47Yeah, I think they do have a little bit of a different taste.
- 24:49I think chickpea is just usually the safer option that's pretty close to a regular pasta.
- 24:54The other ones, I mean, I don't think they taste bad.
- 24:58They're just a little different.
- 24:59The texture might be a little different there too.
- 25:02Yeah.
- 25:03Something else like the almond and cassava flour, like wraps, the ones that you get in the refrigerated section the CFA brand is really good.
- 25:13They only last a certain amount of time after you open them, but it's something that you can get and keep.
- 25:19And as long as you don't open it.
- 25:21It's like good for a while, so I know that's kind of like a middle ground one, but And my regular tortillas, once I open them, I actually put them in the fridge, too, and they I just keep eating them until like I see something funny growing And I usually can make it through them if I put them in the fridge I'm usually fine! Yeah What's a good, yeah, What else for fiber?
- 25:43Oats?
- 25:44Yeah, oats.
- 25:45Oats is like a huge staple because my kids love oatmeal, so I'll like put a ton of protein They're great option.
- 25:53I like like whole grain crackers or like wasa crackers.
- 25:56Those have a good amount of fiber in them.
- 25:58You can put chicken salad, tuna, literally anything smoked salmon, deli meat, whatever you want on them.
- 26:04Or the flackers.
- 26:05Those are good.
- 26:07I mean, it's like flax seed crackers.
- 26:09So we give you some extra fiber and healthy fats there.
- 26:12Yeah.
- 26:14Oh, you know what we forgot for protein was like tuna.
- 26:18Oh yeah, tuna.
- 26:19You can definitely keep tans of, tans of tuna, cans of tuna in your pantry.
- 26:25And I actually, so Schnooks will randomly have sales where instead of a dollar, they're like 79 cents.
- 26:30So that's when I stock up.
- 26:31Anytime there's 79 cents, I buy 10 of them because they take a long time to go bad and we'll eventually use them up anyways.
- 26:38Tuna packs are great to have on hand.
- 26:41Bone broth is another one, especially soup season right now.
- 26:45Use that bone broth for your soups.
- 26:47It'll up the protein.
- 26:48Also is great for your gut health.
- 26:51Fiber.
- 26:52I'm just having all these, we just keep having all these ideas pop up.
- 26:55fiBer.
- 26:55So Thrive Market has these little veggie like pantry.
- 27:01Packets.
- 27:02I don't remember what they're called, but we've put a Thrive Market link in the notes, so you can actually get 40 percent off your first order, but I found these at Thrive Market.
- 27:11They're like a white pouch packet.
- 27:14Oh, yes, the Nokas.
- 27:16Are they Nokas?
- 27:17Is it, is it like, It's not the squeezable ones, no.
- 27:20Just kidding.
- 27:21I do like those though too, so that would be a good fiber option.
- 27:23Noka N O K A.
- 27:25Those but there's another one.
- 27:27What is it called?
- 27:28I don't know But if you type in like veggie pack or something on a search bar and it pops up and it's a white package and They have I know for sure asparagus and artichokes and then they're in like an olive oil and they have some seasonings They're actually really good So I keep those on hand to add with meals and then the noka ones that gives you some fiber and some protein Those you kind of keep in the fridge Well, actually, no, I don't think you have to keep in the fridge.
- 27:52I just, I like mine in the fridge because I like them cold.
- 27:56But those are, yeah, those are ones that I found that I really like because they're pretty high in fiber.
- 28:01Like I'll, yeah, that's another thing, like grab and go.
- 28:04Like that's such a good snack to have on hand.
- 28:07What else for fiber?
- 28:08Wild Zora.
- 28:09That's another good brand I found on Thrive Market.
- 28:13So the Wild Zora, they have soups.
- 28:16And then they also have grain free oatmeal, so it's like an oatmeal, but it's made from flaxseeds.
- 28:24It's actually really good, and they have different flavors.
- 28:27Like apple pie is one of them.
- 28:31I can't remember the other ones, but they're good.
- 28:33It's a little interesting when you first try them, but...
- 28:36I like them.
- 28:37I take them to travel especially.
- 28:39That reminded me of like protein, like, or like pancake mix, like Kodiak mix.
- 28:46Yeah.
- 28:47There's another good one.
- 28:47The Birch Fenders, they have one too.
- 28:51Yeah.
- 28:51If something else has one.
- 28:53Those are simple.
- 28:54Those are like, oh, on a weekend we can prep some muffins or some pancakes for the week or something.
- 29:00I always have that.
- 29:01I always have that.
- 29:02Or protein bars.
- 29:04Yeah, protein bars.
- 29:05I like Aloha.
- 29:06Yeah, I like Aloha.
- 29:09I like, see the Costco brand is a little bit interesting because technically you can keep them in the freezer if you don't want to use them and then you can defrost them.
- 29:19Same with Perfect Bars.
- 29:20You could freeze those for like ever.
- 29:22They're a little bit more expensive, but they're a little bit more of like a meal replacement.
- 29:25Like they just have a lot more in them.
- 29:27Psyllium husk powder, Keisha fiber.
- 29:31Those are great ones for fiber that you can like sprinkle into anything.
- 29:37What else?
- 29:38I feel like there's dried fruit.
- 29:40Yeah, and I actually, I've been doing more like freeze dried fruit because it's so much easier to find low sugar options where the dried fruit, it can get pretty high in the sugars.
- 29:52So the freeze dried ones I usually can find much easier to have less added sugars.
- 29:57Yeah, those are good.
- 29:58The Bayer brand is really good.
- 30:00That's it bars.
- 30:02Oh, I love those.
- 30:03Those are great for like pre workout snacks too.
- 30:06Applesauce pouches.
- 30:10Pre workout snack there, a little bit of fiber.
- 30:12Yeah, and even like dried fruit bars again.
- 30:16You have to like watch for the added sugar, but there's a lot of good brands out there that are just like dried fruit and they're good.
- 30:23I'm trying to think of what I have in my pantry right now.
- 30:25I know, that's what I'm like trying to brainstorm right now.
- 30:28Like a random thing I always have that It just goes with meals.
- 30:33It's like different sauces.
- 30:34So like the rayos.
- 30:35That's what I was just thinking.
- 30:36I always have sauces.
- 30:38Cause you can add sauce to anything.
- 30:40Yeah, like your pasta sauces, your like buffalo sauce, vodka sauce.
- 30:45And that is something I also get from Thrive Market.
- 30:47I will just type in sauces and I'll just grab a few that sound good.
- 30:51So that's another.
- 30:53Yeah.
- 30:54Just to flavor your food up.
- 30:56And like spices too, like the Siete has like these new, maybe they're not new, they're new to me, but like taco seasoning packets, but they have different pack, like, flavors.
- 31:07Those are so good.
- 31:08I used those this week, like, I just put some, like, ground beef in those and some veggies and added, like, a can of beans and made, like, little makeshift burrito bowls.
- 31:16Mm hmm.
- 31:18So good.
- 31:18I just ordered their enchilada sauce, so I'm gonna try that out.
- 31:22Oh, yeah.
- 31:23I haven't seen, I haven't tried that.
- 31:24They sent me their new puffs that they have too.
- 31:28The ones I tried were the spicy ones and I don't do spicy.
- 31:32I mean they were good but I'm not a spicy person so I freaked out.
- 31:36I like their churro ones like their churro ones are so good and I mix that with the like S'mores dip that we have from like the Metabolism Makeover Recipe.
- 31:46So good.
- 31:48A little churro and s'mores.
- 31:49But anything that you can just use to add to a meal, like, and really like, you know, thinking about what's going to add protein, what's going to add some healthy fats.
- 32:02What's going to add some fibers, because a lot of times when we're thinking about snacks to have on hand, and if it becomes like.
- 32:08Chips, cookies, little Debbie cakes, those types of things.
- 32:14That's more like desserts to have on hand, like not to burst anyone's bubble or like be the very bad news.
- 32:19Again, you can incorporate those whenever you want, but it's not going to be a filling snack.
- 32:24It's just going to be a.
- 32:26Filler food, more of a dessert food.
- 32:28So it's actually grab things that you can put together for a snack.
- 32:31You can add to meals.
- 32:32Another one, I guess, is like grain free granola because it's going to make, be made with nuts and seeds and like coconuts sometimes.
- 32:41So that's a good one to have on hand as well.
- 32:43Oh yeah.
- 32:44No, like when it comes to like the little filler foods, like those are whatever they're not gonna, I've said this before, like snacks are supposed to serve a purpose.
- 32:52They're not going to fill you up really.
- 32:54So having snack things on hand that are going to fill you up is the better option.
- 33:00I also like to have like popcorn on hand and like I will always have this is.
- 33:06This doesn't really fall into any category, but it goes with popcorn.
- 33:09Like, I will do dark chocolate chips.
- 33:12I always have a little bit of those.
- 33:13Like, if you're wanting a little bit more, like, salty sweet type thing.
- 33:17Or you could do nutritional yeast with it.
- 33:19It gives you a little bit of fiber and that cheesy flavor.
- 33:22Mm hmm.
- 33:23I know.
- 33:23I'm a big fan of nutritional yeast lately.
- 33:25Oh, I love it.
- 33:26It looks like fish food, but it tastes like cheese.
- 33:28Yeah, I I put it in like some mac and cheese the other day.
- 33:32Yeah.
- 33:32I made casseroles with it.
- 33:34I don't show anybody what it looks like while you're cooking with it.
- 33:38Cause they'd be like, oh my god, you're trying to kill me.
- 33:40But as long as they don't see it, they're fine.
- 33:42Yeah, exactly.
- 33:44It's kind of like the cheese cubes.
- 33:45Mm hmm.
- 33:47Dear God.
- 33:48Yes.
- 33:49I'm doing it.
- 33:50We're getting through the cheese sticks, guys.
- 33:52Like groceries are expensive these days, but yeah, hopefully we've given you guys some ideas.
- 33:59Try to break down your meals and think of it very simple in terms of like, where am I getting my protein?
- 34:05Where am I getting my fiber?
- 34:07Where am I getting my fats?
- 34:08And like, just keep it really simple.
- 34:11Like, it does not need to be anything crazy.
- 34:15Like, easy meals that you can throw together in 5 10 minutes from like, staples that you have.
- 34:19Like, that's gonna be your key to success.
- 34:21Really for like, stress, your, you know, maybe your weight loss goals, your health goals, whatever it is.
- 34:27Like, when you can figure out how to put like, easy meals together.
- 34:33That's like most of the battle, to be honest.
- 34:34Mm hmm.
- 34:35It, it will honestly just help you so much, especially on weekends, because sometimes weekends where we can end up, like, going out to eat, sometimes it's like, oh, we all of a sudden need to put lunch together.
- 34:47This is what's gonna save your weekends, too.
- 34:49Yeah.
- 34:49Yeah.
- 34:50I hope this is helpful for you.
- 34:51We have some freebies that are in the show notes and also some links that we have for products that we have mentioned.
- 34:59Let us know which items that you have found helpful Tag us in your pantry clean outs and Even doing something like that can be helpful to get started just to see like what do you have on hand?
- 35:10Clean out the pantry get it organized.
- 35:12You'll feel so much better there yeah Let us know how those pantries fridges and freezers are working Stay tuned for my little workbook coming And yeah, we will see you guys next week I think that's a good challenge though.
- 35:27I do like that before we leave like Go through your pantry go through your freezer and there's stuff in there that you haven't used in a long time Like I guarantee it first make sure it's not expired Honestly I just like have like flashbacks to like my parents house.
- 35:42I don't know if anybody else's like every time my dad would be like, I just bought that.
- 35:47I'm like, this expired in 2002.
- 35:51No, you did not.
- 35:52You did not just buy this 20 years old.
- 35:55So, but go through there and kind of see like, Hey, what could I use with this?
- 35:59Like, what is this?
- 36:00Is this protein?
- 36:00Is it fat?
- 36:01Is it fiber?
- 36:03What can we and like, see like what you can put together with like things that you already have and like, if you have questions, let us know, like, send us a DM and be like, okay, I found these, like, tell me how to make this a meal, you know, like magic wand it for you.
- 36:15It'll be great.
- 36:16Yes, I've done that with some of my virtual sessions.
- 36:19We literally, like, I get taken to their pantry and we just look at it.
- 36:22I'm like, okay, but this, this, this together and boom, we have a meal.
- 36:26Okay.
- 36:26I'm like, okay, well, you also have this and this now just go buy this.
- 36:30That's a five second grocery store.
- 36:32Well, probably like seven minutes once you check out and everything, but like, that's a quick grocery store trip that you can make to grab four items instead of 22 items.
- 36:42And then you have meals.
- 36:43I know my husband always like.
- 36:45He tells me that.
- 36:46He'll be like, I'll cook.
- 36:48I will.
- 36:48But you got to come in here and tell me like, what can I put together for a meal?
- 36:52Because I don't know how you do it.
- 36:53Yeah, I love that idea.
- 36:57Like, take me to your pantry.
- 36:59All right, everyone, we'll have a great rest of your week and we will talk to you next week.
- 37:09Bye.
- 37:10Bye.
