- 0:37Speaker 2: the Money. Hello, and welcome to She's on the the
- 1:00Speaker 2: podcast for millennials who had a barbie party last weekend
- 1:04Speaker 2: and it was basically the most lit thing in the
- 1:06Speaker 2: entire world, but nobody cares. So today is Friday, which
- 1:09Speaker 2: means it is time to celebrate you because last Saturday
- 1:12Speaker 2: at my barbie party, it was about me, but today
- 1:14Speaker 2: it is about you and celebrating how incredible she is
- 1:17Speaker 2: on the Money community, we are genuinely so excited to
- 1:20Speaker 2: be back again for another Friday episode. Today we're going
- 1:23Speaker 2: to be sharing our favorite money wins or is just groo.
- 1:25Speaker 2: She is going to be taking us through the top
- 1:27Speaker 2: tips and the top money wins from our group. We'll
- 1:30Speaker 2: be helping to answer a juicy money dilemma, which this week, guys,
- 1:33Speaker 2: it's all about understanding the pros and cons of being
- 1:35Speaker 2: a casual or a part time worker and how that works. Beck,
- 1:39Speaker 2: You're going to sprinkle in some more broke tips, which
- 1:42Speaker 2: we're very excited about. And we're going to be unpacking
- 1:44Speaker 2: something you slid into our DMS about and we're going
- 1:47Speaker 2: to discuss how to bring up a prenup with your partner.
- 1:51Speaker 2: How do we have that conversation? So that could be
- 1:54Speaker 2: really fun. But first things first, my loves, how was your.
- 1:57Speaker 3: Week so good? I feel like the Barbie party just
- 2:01Speaker 3: like set the week off on a high. If you
- 2:03Speaker 3: follow me on Instagram, you know getting that costume together
- 2:05Speaker 3: was quite the audio.
- 2:07Speaker 2: You love a theme though we love see commit it well.
- 2:11Speaker 2: Beck dyed her head.
- 2:12Speaker 3: Will not dye her hair, It spray hated her hair
- 2:14Speaker 3: a different color. So I feel like everyone bought in.
- 2:16Speaker 3: And I said on the night, it's so rare that
- 2:18Speaker 3: you have a party like that with as many people
- 2:20Speaker 3: as you did. And every single persons committed, every single
- 2:24Speaker 3: person went hard. It was so much fun.
- 2:26Speaker 2: I mean, it was probably the aggressive invitation that I sent.
- 2:29Speaker 2: If you remember, the invitation did say that was great
- 2:33Speaker 2: standard barbies will be rejected at the door if you
- 2:36Speaker 2: do not dress up. Don't bother coming, like go hard
- 2:40Speaker 2: or go home, Like this is a costume party. Sure,
- 2:43Speaker 2: for sure, not one person didn't put effort in.
- 2:46Speaker 4: No, that's true, that is true. I really like that.
- 2:48Speaker 4: But also this is something I do get nervous about
- 2:50Speaker 4: when it comes to themes, is that they're going to
- 2:51Speaker 4: cost a lot of money. They don't have to cost
- 2:54Speaker 4: that much. You were really creative, So just putting that
- 2:57Speaker 4: out there.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Jess already had a costume box full of costumes and
- 3:01Speaker 2: its next to my ready to go. That's an investment.
- 3:03Speaker 3: It is my boyfriend made in front of me, and
- 3:05Speaker 3: then I got to whip it out and be like, there.
- 3:07Speaker 2: You go, costume box is paying exactly.
- 3:12Speaker 3: How is your week back?
- 3:13Speaker 4: My week was really lovely. Hectic, hectic work week. Lot's
- 3:17Speaker 4: going on, but also really nice. I'm trying to like
- 3:21Speaker 4: make time for mates and also work, and I don't
- 3:24Speaker 4: want the two to bleed into each other. You know
- 3:26Speaker 4: what I mean, work time, Jessica, apologies, this is a worktime, babe.
- 3:31Speaker 3: No laughing, fellow business associate.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Hello, infer to each other.
- 3:36Speaker 4: By name anymore?
- 3:37Speaker 2: Oh, yes, my colleague, this is my colleague, my estume colleague. No,
- 3:42Speaker 2: but my week has been pretty lovely. Oh how good?
- 3:45Speaker 3: Happy? My financial Yeah?
- 3:46Speaker 2: By the way, Oh, isn't it exciting huge me? Yes.
- 3:50Speaker 2: If you guys have fallen a little bit off track
- 3:52Speaker 2: when it comes to your financial goals, I think this
- 3:55Speaker 2: time of year it's perfect to just get back on
- 3:57Speaker 2: the horse.
- 3:58Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 3:58Speaker 2: I feel like so many times we get to July,
- 4:00Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, I haven't achieved anything. So we still
- 4:03Speaker 2: have like literally six full months to do so much stuff.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Zachly like, get back on it. If you haven't done
- 4:08Speaker 2: your budget, download our free budget from our website. If
- 4:11Speaker 2: you're worried about cash flow, now is the time to
- 4:13Speaker 2: sit down and go through your finances. If you haven't
- 4:16Speaker 2: got your insurances in order, now's the time you want
- 4:18Speaker 2: to review your mortgage. Go talk to Kate at Zella Money.
- 4:21Speaker 2: There are so many things that you can do to
- 4:23Speaker 2: put yourself in a better financial position. And I mean
- 4:26Speaker 2: listening to this podcast is arguably the best one you've
- 4:29Speaker 2: made this year.
- 4:30Speaker 3: Well done starting the financial year off on a great foot.
- 4:32Speaker 2: I love it all right, Well, let's dive straight into
- 4:35Speaker 2: something that is literally my favorite thing ever, and that's
- 4:38Speaker 2: like our money wins thread. Just Grichier. What have you
- 4:41Speaker 2: pulled out to share with the team this week?
- 4:43Speaker 3: My first is a money loss who came from Ali,
- 4:46Speaker 3: but I'm going to follow it up with a potential
- 4:47Speaker 3: money win. She said, money loss took the kids to
- 4:50Speaker 3: Disney on Ice, but life win. We had the best
- 4:52Speaker 3: family night I ever. And I actually just got a
- 4:54Speaker 3: TikTok the other night that had someone who was going
- 4:56Speaker 3: to Disney on Ice and it was a video and
- 4:58Speaker 3: she'd gone to Kmart and she'd bought a bunch of
- 5:00Speaker 3: Disney merch there for a quarter of the price and
- 5:03Speaker 3: just took it with her and pulled it out of bag.
- 5:04Speaker 2: Was like, oh look what I got you?
- 5:06Speaker 3: Oh so smart, because that's those slates will take you
- 5:10Speaker 3: for a ride. I think it was something like seventy
- 5:12Speaker 3: dollars for a soft toy, so going it came out
- 5:15Speaker 3: of a target or when Jessica spent it, yep, one
- 5:17Speaker 3: hundred percent. I would not a question.
- 5:18Speaker 2: No, no, no, no no, would did you have will? We
- 5:23Speaker 2: went to Disneyland twice last year? I'm for she Sure
- 5:26Speaker 2: she went hamd both times. Wow, bought the overpriced merch.
- 5:29Speaker 2: If you're taking a kid, they're not going to know
- 5:30Speaker 2: so exactly early I should have done that to Jess.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Look at these ears. Jess would have been like, yeah,
- 5:36Speaker 2: I haven't seen these ones in this the fifty different
- 5:39Speaker 2: Disney stores I've been into today, it's a cure.
- 5:41Speaker 4: Or if you go to an ice rink and dress
- 5:43Speaker 4: up as whoever the Disney or not, I just won't
- 5:46Speaker 4: know the difference.
- 5:47Speaker 3: Not a clue. Could just be back in Victoria's skating
- 5:50Speaker 3: exactly like.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Me on ice skates. Would not be a good idea,
- 5:55Speaker 2: it would be funny. Let's save you money, let's do it.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Let's get our disney is out and go ice skating. Yeah,
- 6:01Speaker 2: she's on the money, Disney or.
- 6:02Speaker 3: Us done done, I'll see there. My next money wind
- 6:05Speaker 3: comes from Claire, who said money win. I'm rereading my
- 6:08Speaker 3: books in my bookshelf again, so I've saved myself twenty
- 6:11Speaker 3: five dollars. I'm buying a new book Love It.
- 6:13Speaker 2: It's a good money win.
- 6:14Speaker 3: Simple but effective. Next, I've got a money in from Julia,
- 6:18Speaker 3: who said, instead of buying a new dress swear for
- 6:20Speaker 3: a wedding, a friend of a friend let me borrow
- 6:23Speaker 3: one of hers for the day.
- 6:24Speaker 2: I just like the idea of that, and I love
- 6:26Speaker 2: that they weren't like a super close friend. We're becoming
- 6:29Speaker 2: far more comfortable with sharing clothes. I feel like the
- 6:32Speaker 2: sharing is the way to go.
- 6:33Speaker 3: Sharing truly is caring, especially in this economy. So you'd
- 6:36Speaker 3: love to see it.
- 6:37Speaker 2: You best believe I'll be asking to borrow that too, too.
- 6:39Speaker 2: Off Jessica that she walter my Barbie party.
- 6:41Speaker 3: Anytime from casual Wednesday in the office. Yes, absolutely, don't
- 6:45Speaker 3: put it past me.
- 6:46Speaker 2: If that is an option. I am in a bad time.
- 6:50Speaker 3: My next money win is from Rihanna, who said money win.
- 6:52Speaker 3: I've been having a hard time personally for the last
- 6:55Speaker 3: few weeks. So on Saturday, a friend of mine made
- 6:57Speaker 3: me a home called lunch Slushpin Tobot. I was out
- 7:01Speaker 3: all day on Saturday and their lunch was such a lifesaver.
- 7:04Speaker 2: I love this. That is actually so wholesome. Are you
- 7:06Speaker 2: making lunch for the team this week?
- 7:08Speaker 3: Or I can try, But as a not great chef
- 7:10Speaker 3: you may or may not want.
- 7:11Speaker 2: We are all having dinosaur nugget.
- 7:13Speaker 3: That's exactly right. Next, I've got to win from Georgina,
- 7:17Speaker 3: who said we paid off three out of our five
- 7:20Speaker 3: expensive degu station restaurants by using credit card and Flybys
- 7:27Speaker 3: points translated to restaurant give outch Oh so smart. I've
- 7:31Speaker 3: spent months maximizing the points we could get on transactions,
- 7:34Speaker 3: particularly from Flybys to do this.
- 7:36Speaker 2: Oh great Flybys and Jessica two peas in a pod.
- 7:41Speaker 2: In fact, this week I went to the Flybys office actually,
- 7:43Speaker 2: and I had a corporate speaking event which was so
- 7:47Speaker 2: slagh like. Imagine telling the Flybys team, who are arguably
- 7:50Speaker 2: better at budgeting like they are the queens at Tips
- 7:53Speaker 2: and Trigs. They asked me to come in and tell
- 7:55Speaker 2: them that is really cool, isn't it cool?
- 7:57Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 7:57Speaker 3: So fun.
- 7:58Speaker 2: I'm very jealouyh. Just so you know, Beck would like
- 8:02Speaker 2: to draw your attention to the fact that she drew
- 8:04Speaker 2: a sushi.
- 8:05Speaker 4: I don't know why you.
- 8:06Speaker 3: I don't want you not sure a while.
- 8:08Speaker 4: I need you to just look at the sushi that
- 8:10Speaker 4: I drew because you said beno box sorry continued, Yes,
- 8:12Speaker 4: we'll put a picture online.
- 8:14Speaker 2: Yes please if you think you're not nerospicy baby roll.
- 8:18Speaker 3: Next, money when comes from Shivanji, who said money Win
- 8:21Speaker 3: shopped for the entire year at the Iconic sale, bought
- 8:24Speaker 3: twenty ish pieces of clothing and got fifty percent off
- 8:27Speaker 3: my entire shop on top of the sale price. Ended
- 8:30Speaker 3: up paying seven hundred dollars for shopping worth three thousand,
- 8:33Speaker 3: eight hundred dollars. Then I used shop back and Cornus
- 8:37Speaker 3: points to get extra points on it and that was
- 8:39Speaker 3: beautiful too.
- 8:40Speaker 4: Oh my god, shop back. I love shot back.
- 8:42Speaker 2: How good?
- 8:42Speaker 3: It just reminded because I feel like we haven't said
- 8:44Speaker 3: in a while, but the code SotM gets you ten
- 8:46Speaker 3: dollars if you sign.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Up to shop back, and I have used it before
- 8:48Speaker 2: and that's a big money win.
- 8:50Speaker 3: Yes, big money wing. I am their biggest fan. And lastly,
- 8:53Speaker 3: I'm just summarizing almost the entire thread from this week.
- 8:56Speaker 2: It went bothways.
- 8:57Speaker 3: Hundreds of people hundreds is it money win of money
- 9:00Speaker 3: us did or did not get Taylor Swift tickets?
- 9:02Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 9:03Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, we feel you, we see you. We're
- 9:06Speaker 3: working on a little solution. Could you say you didn't.
- 9:10Speaker 2: We've got four little solutions that we're trying to find
- 9:14Speaker 2: a solution before.
- 9:15Speaker 3: Yeah, we're trying to find a solution to give you
- 9:17Speaker 3: a solution. But just know we're working on it. We've
- 9:19Speaker 3: got your back, besties. You're gonna want to be following
- 9:22Speaker 3: us on Instagram and on Facebook.
- 9:23Speaker 2: That you need to be following us on socials because
- 9:26Speaker 2: it won't be on the phone.
- 9:27Speaker 3: No, it'll be a little surprise.
- 9:30Speaker 2: Interesting.
- 9:31Speaker 3: You didn't hear it from me though.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Imagine if it was just like us giving away pictures
- 9:35Speaker 2: of Taylor sw I.
- 9:36Speaker 4: I was thinking that too. I was like imagining you guys.
- 9:39Speaker 2: Just no, it's not it will make you cry. It
- 9:41Speaker 2: made me cry. It's very anyway, carry on, carry on,
- 9:44Speaker 2: carry all, right, Beck, I need to know your broke tip.
- 9:48Speaker 2: What have you got?
- 9:49Speaker 4: Anyway, I'm kind of excited about these ones because they're
- 9:51Speaker 4: very relatable, I would think.
- 9:53Speaker 2: To the general public.
- 9:54Speaker 4: So the first one comes from Grace, who has two
- 9:58Speaker 4: for me, so I'll read them both out.
- 9:59Speaker 2: The one is reuse.
- 10:01Speaker 4: Your tea bags. We were talking about reusing off air.
- 10:05Speaker 2: Draw the line at the tea bag reuse.
- 10:07Speaker 4: Usually I mean usually same but if you know, if
- 10:09Speaker 4: you have one tea bag left and you literally can
- 10:11Speaker 4: we've all been there, We've all been there by a
- 10:14Speaker 4: new box. Reuse the tea bag, don't worry about it.
- 10:16Speaker 4: This would be like a flavorful water which can be delivered.
- 10:19Speaker 4: Wee tea is for plebs rather than reusing.
- 10:22Speaker 3: Could you maybe double up the quantity of water that
- 10:25Speaker 3: you're putting it into because they just worry about bacteria.
- 10:30Speaker 2: I'm not for tea leaves.
- 10:32Speaker 4: Surely, if you're like maybe making two teas or something
- 10:35Speaker 4: like that, you can at the same time at the
- 10:36Speaker 4: same time. But yes, ideally you know you want it
- 10:38Speaker 4: because they do get moldy or something.
- 10:40Speaker 3: For you would be thought. No, double double the water.
- 10:44Speaker 3: That's a good one. Double the water and then you
- 10:45Speaker 3: can pop one in the fridge for tomorrow.
- 10:47Speaker 2: Exactly right.
- 10:48Speaker 4: So reuse your tea bags, reuse anything that is able
- 10:52Speaker 4: to be reused, basically, I think is a really good
- 10:55Speaker 4: general tip. The next one is toothpicks. Yep, are you
- 10:59Speaker 4: re used toothpicks?
- 11:00Speaker 3: Good?
- 11:04Speaker 2: Move on. I'm not even going to see how many
- 11:06Speaker 2: different things you would reuse.
- 11:07Speaker 3: I ever used gum No?
- 11:09Speaker 4: Sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, Okay, this.
- 11:13Speaker 2: Next one do you know if I make that sound?
- 11:15Speaker 2: Actually I hope I'm not triggering anyone, but if I
- 11:18Speaker 2: go in front of my husband, it triggers his gag briefly.
- 11:22Speaker 4: I know a few people that I would I'm sorry,
- 11:24Speaker 4: sorry if you're driving and gagging, but I'm gackling. If
- 11:29Speaker 4: you have turned it down, you can safely turn it
- 11:31Speaker 4: up now because Victoria doesn't have to gag anymore. This
- 11:34Speaker 4: one is a very good tip. Okay, so this is
- 11:36Speaker 4: for uber users.
- 11:38Speaker 3: Use uber pool.
- 11:40Speaker 4: Sometimes you actually don't have anyone else in there, but
- 11:43Speaker 4: you've saved so much money, so always use it.
- 11:45Speaker 3: Even if you do have someone in there.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Whatever you know, it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. We
- 11:48Speaker 2: can be friends. A lot of the time you actually.
- 11:50Speaker 4: Don't have anyone else in there because no one else
- 11:52Speaker 4: is using uber pool.
- 11:53Speaker 2: That's quite clever. I never thought.
- 11:55Speaker 3: I didn't realize that they would just not put someone
- 11:56Speaker 3: in there.
- 11:58Speaker 2: You can get that.
- 11:59Speaker 3: That's like a free seat row on the plane. That's
- 12:02Speaker 3: why I cute that too. Yes, which is rare, rare,
- 12:05Speaker 3: but sometimes it happens.
- 12:07Speaker 1: Now.
- 12:08Speaker 4: I do have another one from one Courtney, who has
- 12:12Speaker 4: sent in after hearing about you know my bit situation.
- 12:16Speaker 4: Courtney wrote in and said that she heard that Basically,
- 12:19Speaker 4: Medibank has a Live Better program. You be healthy, you
- 12:23Speaker 4: get points. You can redeem those points to buy a
- 12:25Speaker 4: brain new fit bit, so you can. I had never
- 12:28Speaker 4: heard about this before, but do it. I feel like
- 12:31Speaker 4: it's a win win win.
- 12:32Speaker 2: It's like the AIA Vitality program. So I'm pretty sure
- 12:35Speaker 2: that Medibank is through IOA correct me if I'm wrong.
- 12:39Speaker 2: But that program kind of gives you discounts and rewards
- 12:42Speaker 2: you for being healthy, and you can get like percentages
- 12:45Speaker 2: off your health insurance and you can like redeem your
- 12:47Speaker 2: points for things, and you get more points for doing
- 12:50Speaker 2: more things, Like you can get points for just doing
- 12:52Speaker 2: your steps, but you can also like go to the
- 12:54Speaker 2: optometrist and have your and your check up. You get
- 12:57Speaker 2: points for it, and you can redeem it on stuff
- 12:59Speaker 2: like give out just stuff. It's actually really good.
- 13:01Speaker 3: I love that.
- 13:02Speaker 2: Not sponsible just I thought that was real cool. No,
- 13:04Speaker 2: I do love But if they do want to sponsor me,
- 13:06Speaker 2: I would be very keen on working with it. I
- 13:07Speaker 2: wouldn't hate it, wouldn't hate it lines to my values.
- 13:10Speaker 4: Yeah, So my breake tip for this week is to
- 13:13Speaker 4: bring your own sauces, condiments, everything wherever you go. So
- 13:18Speaker 4: if you're getting a meat pie, you don't want to
- 13:19Speaker 4: pay you extra twenty cents, sometimes an extra two dollars
- 13:22Speaker 4: for a little what do you call.
- 13:24Speaker 2: Those things sashet.
- 13:25Speaker 4: No, it's like comes in a tiny little bowl ramikin
- 13:28Speaker 4: ramikin of sauce or.
- 13:30Speaker 2: So you're just carrying around to seven hundred ye meal
- 13:33Speaker 2: bottle off.
- 13:34Speaker 4: You can bring the bottle, but you can also just
- 13:36Speaker 4: get little TopWare container's always bring your own condiments. So
- 13:39Speaker 4: if you're getting I don't know, pie from seven to eleven,
- 13:42Speaker 4: I don't know if they charge for sources, but.
- 13:44Speaker 2: No, seven eleven sauces free, So that's money. Take the
- 13:48Speaker 2: seven eleven sauce. Yeah, save it for the next time
- 13:51Speaker 2: someone tries to stood you on source because seven eleven
- 13:54Speaker 2: would never, they would never.
- 13:56Speaker 4: Yes, exactly, you can save you up on those or whatever,
- 13:58Speaker 4: but just don't be spending even twenty sense for extra sauce.
- 14:01Speaker 4: Bring your own sauce, bring your own condiments.
- 14:03Speaker 2: See I've never done that, but I do. This is
- 14:05Speaker 2: probably a deep insight into my personality. I'm the saltiest
- 14:09Speaker 2: woman you've ever known. Like help, I put salt on everything.
- 14:13Speaker 3: And then you go back and put more salt on it.
- 14:15Speaker 2: Yeah, like if we're having toast with butter, salt, we're
- 14:19Speaker 2: having any food salt, We're going to the tire place salt. Like,
- 14:22Speaker 2: there needs to be salt on all of my food,
- 14:24Speaker 2: to the point where I have gone to my doctor
- 14:27Speaker 2: and said, can you please test my sodium levels? I
- 14:29Speaker 2: think this is obscene and comes back normal He said, no,
- 14:33Speaker 2: what you're consuming is sign I steal the salt pack
- 14:37Speaker 2: from like macas and stuff, yep, and I put them
- 14:39Speaker 2: in my purse so that I'm never without salt. That's
- 14:41Speaker 2: a good idea. I can't be without salt. So you
- 14:45Speaker 2: can do that at hotels and stuff. I also carry
- 14:47Speaker 2: my own tea bags in my own bag. Ah, yes, yes, yes,
- 14:49Speaker 2: in little ziploc Yep, you've seen it. Yep. I've got
- 14:53Speaker 2: little tea bags because like, what if I need a
- 14:55Speaker 2: lemon grass ginger tea, I'm not spending five dollars getting
- 14:58Speaker 2: a lemon gras like a couple what absolutely not.
- 15:01Speaker 4: That is so true actually, and I used to do
- 15:03Speaker 4: that a lot, and it's so much cheaper. You go
- 15:04Speaker 4: to like you know, your servo, and you get a
- 15:06Speaker 4: cup of order and you just chuck your own tea
- 15:08Speaker 4: bag in there.
- 15:09Speaker 3: It's so much cheaper.
- 15:09Speaker 2: You might think I'm a stinge, but I'm a smart one.
- 15:12Speaker 3: There you go, little saucers, little tea bags. You just
- 15:14Speaker 3: need a little mini kitchen.
- 15:15Speaker 2: It and just looking at us like we are insane.
- 15:18Speaker 2: I'm like, nah, nah, no judgment.
- 15:21Speaker 3: No as a chicken nugget, girly, I'm all for doing
- 15:23Speaker 3: what you gotta do.
- 15:24Speaker 2: I love that.
- 15:25Speaker 4: Thank you, Jess more salt more often, Yes, exactly, save
- 15:28Speaker 4: yourself some money.
- 15:29Speaker 2: Let's go to a really quick break because on the
- 15:30Speaker 2: flip side, we're going to be talking about the pros
- 15:32Speaker 2: and cons of being a casual versus a part time worker,
- 15:35Speaker 2: and then we're going to discuss how to approach having
- 15:38Speaker 2: a conversation about a prenup with a partner, and that
- 15:41Speaker 2: can be really awkward. So don't go anywhere, because we
- 15:44Speaker 2: got to feel really uncomforable having this conversation and you
- 15:46Speaker 2: can't just leave us.
- 15:52Speaker 3: Welcome back, everybody. Let's take a listen to the Money
- 15:54Speaker 3: to Lemma.
- 15:54Speaker 2: For the week. Hi, there, have you got a money
- 15:58Speaker 2: dilemma you just can't solve. She's on the Money Team
- 16:01Speaker 2: is here to help. Every week we tackle your dilemmas,
- 16:04Speaker 2: both big and small to answer your most burning money,
- 16:07Speaker 2: career and life questions. To get involved, simply head to
- 16:10Speaker 2: our website and leave us a short voice recording and
- 16:12Speaker 2: you might just find yourself on the show. Now, let's
- 16:15Speaker 2: take a listen to this week's money dilemma.
- 16:20Speaker 5: Hello, she's on the money friends. I'm absolutely loving the potty.
- 16:24Speaker 5: My money dilemma is that I'm in a bit of
- 16:25Speaker 5: a sticky situation at work at the moment where I
- 16:28Speaker 5: love my job and work pretty much part time hours
- 16:31Speaker 5: as a casual, but I've just been asked to go
- 16:33Speaker 5: on a contract a part time but I'm kind of
- 16:35Speaker 5: having a hard time understanding the benefits. At the moment,
- 16:38Speaker 5: as a casual, my alli rate is higher and I
- 16:40Speaker 5: still get pretty regular shifts. But I know from other
- 16:42Speaker 5: staff who've been asked to go on a contract they've
- 16:45Speaker 5: been threatened with reduced shifts as it's kind of out
- 16:47Speaker 5: of their budget to pay casuals. However, I know in
- 16:50Speaker 5: the summertime they are generally short on staff anyway. So
- 16:53Speaker 5: Victoria and team, can you help me understand the pros
- 16:56Speaker 5: and cons of being a casual versus part time? Beyond
- 16:59Speaker 5: the ali right, and what might be the other benefits
- 17:02Speaker 5: of being one or the other.
- 17:03Speaker 2: So this is a tricky topic because if you're doing
- 17:08Speaker 2: here in Australia, and you should absolutely head to the
- 17:11Speaker 2: Fairwork dot gov dot au website to learn a little
- 17:14Speaker 2: bit more and not just take a podcast as gospel.
- 17:16Speaker 2: But I have done the reading, so I'm basically just
- 17:19Speaker 2: spitting out what I've read on that website. But I
- 17:22Speaker 2: also know from personal experience in our community that if
- 17:26Speaker 2: you're a casual employee and you've been doing consistent part
- 17:31Speaker 2: time hours for a minimum I believe of twelve months,
- 17:35Speaker 2: you're technically not meant to be on a casual contract.
- 17:39Speaker 2: Some companies don't want to move you to a part
- 17:41Speaker 2: time contract because that means they actually have a minimum
- 17:44Speaker 2: obligation to you. Like if I had employed Beck on
- 17:47Speaker 2: a casual contract, technically the nature of our arrangement is
- 17:51Speaker 2: that I wouldn't some weeks have to give you any shifts.
- 17:54Speaker 2: But if you were on a part time we have
- 17:56Speaker 2: an agreement that there would be minimum shifts. So some
- 17:59Speaker 2: companies want to keep you casual. Some companies might be
- 18:02Speaker 2: as yours is my she is on the money friend
- 18:04Speaker 2: might be trying to move you to part time because
- 18:06Speaker 2: their casual plan isn't working out as well. But there
- 18:10Speaker 2: are pros and cons to both. So when it comes
- 18:12Speaker 2: to casual employment, you would have what we call a loading,
- 18:15Speaker 2: and that's why your hourly rate is higher. You have
- 18:18Speaker 2: loading because you don't get sick pay, and you don't
- 18:20Speaker 2: get to take annual leave. You don't accrue annual leave,
- 18:23Speaker 2: and you don't get a lot of the other benefits
- 18:25Speaker 2: associated with being a full time or a part time employee.
- 18:29Speaker 2: So a part time employee has the same rights as
- 18:32Speaker 2: a full time employee, but you definitely have a few
- 18:35Speaker 2: less benefits involved when you're casually employed. But to make
- 18:39Speaker 2: up for the lack of benefits, you get a higher
- 18:42Speaker 2: hourly rate. So there are a few things I guess
- 18:44Speaker 2: that come in and it's going to really depend on
- 18:48Speaker 2: what you want out of life. I know when I
- 18:51Speaker 2: was back in UNI, and this was ten plus years ago,
- 18:54Speaker 2: so things have definitely changed. I got offered a part
- 18:56Speaker 2: time role and I said no thanks, because I actually
- 18:58Speaker 2: wanted the loading of being a casual employee and I
- 19:01Speaker 2: liked the flexibility. I didn't care about unpaid leave, I
- 19:04Speaker 2: didn't care about all of those things because I was
- 19:06Speaker 2: kind of like broke as hell, so I didn't want
- 19:09Speaker 2: to take annual leave and any annual leave periods. I
- 19:11Speaker 2: actually wanted way more shifts to make more money, so
- 19:15Speaker 2: I liked that flexibility. But at the end of the day,
- 19:18Speaker 2: I think this is going to depend on what your
- 19:22Speaker 2: personal circumstances are, So negotiating with your employer is important.
- 19:29Speaker 2: Asking for more information I think is also important because
- 19:31Speaker 2: if you're missing out massively financially from making that shift
- 19:35Speaker 2: because it works better for your employer, I think that
- 19:38Speaker 2: there needs to be a really good conversation around Hey,
- 19:41Speaker 2: I can see that this puts you guys in a
- 19:43Speaker 2: way better position, but it doesn't do the same for me.
- 19:45Speaker 2: In fact, I'm going backwards. So what are we going
- 19:48Speaker 2: to do about Maybe you're negotiating that, yes, you take
- 19:51Speaker 2: a cut on your hourly rate, but it might not
- 19:55Speaker 2: be as much of a cut as what they're proposing.
- 19:58Speaker 2: Do the math, sit down and write out what you'd
- 19:59Speaker 2: take home per week or fortnite or month or however
- 20:02Speaker 2: you get paid on the casual versus the part time contract,
- 20:06Speaker 2: But also what other benefits are there? Are you actually
- 20:10Speaker 2: going to enjoy the fact that you now get paid leave,
- 20:13Speaker 2: it might be a value to you. Are you actually
- 20:16Speaker 2: going to benefit from sick leave? Because if you call
- 20:18Speaker 2: in as a casual when you're not well, you're probably
- 20:21Speaker 2: not getting paid for that. So it will really depend
- 20:24Speaker 2: on your contract on how that works and having open,
- 20:26Speaker 2: honest conversations with your employer. But I would be checking
- 20:30Speaker 2: out the Fair Work website because I feel like they
- 20:32Speaker 2: are the most reliable source of information. And it really
- 20:35Speaker 2: depends on what award you're on as well as to
- 20:38Speaker 2: what the regulations look like, because they're really different if
- 20:41Speaker 2: you were in construction, or you're a barista, or you're
- 20:44Speaker 2: a waitress, or maybe you're working in an art gallery, Like,
- 20:47Speaker 2: all of these different things are going to come into play.
- 20:49Speaker 2: So there's not a one size fits all answer here
- 20:52Speaker 2: as to which is better. Because according to Fair Work,
- 20:55Speaker 2: part time contracts are relatively attractive because there's more responsibility
- 21:00Speaker 2: on the employer. However, you might be like past Victoria,
- 21:04Speaker 2: I loved my high outul you rate, so to me
- 21:08Speaker 2: that made sense. What would you guys do?
- 21:09Speaker 3: I would just say to be aware that going onto
- 21:12Speaker 3: part time, it's going to really depend on your contract
- 21:14Speaker 3: because I remember when I worked in retail, and I
- 21:17Speaker 3: worked for the same employer on a casual, part time,
- 21:19Speaker 3: and full time contract, so I did it all. But
- 21:21Speaker 3: the part time contract of a standard contract was a
- 21:24Speaker 3: three hour minimum. So I know that she said in
- 21:28Speaker 3: her note to us that she was worried that if
- 21:30Speaker 3: she stayed casual they might penalize her by reducing her shifts,
- 21:34Speaker 3: but if she went part time like she would be
- 21:36Speaker 3: guaranteed shifts. But sometimes employers can be sneaky because if
- 21:39Speaker 3: they set that minimum at the lowest amount, which in
- 21:42Speaker 3: the retail award, at least at the time that I
- 21:45Speaker 3: was working, it was three hours a week, Yep, they
- 21:47Speaker 3: are only required to give you whatever's outlined in your contract.
- 21:50Speaker 3: If they set that at twenty five hours a week,
- 21:52Speaker 3: that would be your minimum. But sometimes employers who are
- 21:55Speaker 3: doing it to reduce their costs will put those minimum
- 21:58Speaker 3: hours in as low as possible so that they can
- 22:01Speaker 3: chop and change that roster around as they need without
- 22:03Speaker 3: actually having a significant obligation to you outside of your
- 22:07Speaker 3: pro rauded benefits based on you know, whatever that minimum
- 22:10Speaker 3: hourly rate is.
- 22:11Speaker 2: Yeah, it makes me really frustrated because the tone of
- 22:14Speaker 2: that message was a bit threatening. Not from our community member.
- 22:17Speaker 2: You weren't threatening, love you, but when people are saying,
- 22:21Speaker 2: oh my gosh, like you'll get less hours, it kind
- 22:24Speaker 2: of feels like a threat. Like, Jesse, if you don't
- 22:26Speaker 2: sign this contract and agree to work for less right now,
- 22:29Speaker 2: which is what it would feel like, you're going to
- 22:32Speaker 2: not get the work, so you better sign. Yeah, And
- 22:34Speaker 2: that feels awful, And I think that there's a conversation
- 22:38Speaker 2: around that, And that's why I'm saying, maybe go check
- 22:40Speaker 2: out fair Work and have a conversation. You can always
- 22:43Speaker 2: call them for some advice and see what happens. But
- 22:46Speaker 2: also it kind of is a no brainer as well,
- 22:50Speaker 2: Like let's say that that was not threatening at all,
- 22:52Speaker 2: and I've got Beck, and I've got Jess, and Jess
- 22:54Speaker 2: is on a contract and she's part time, and then Beck,
- 22:57Speaker 2: you're hourly. I look at that and I'm putting some
- 23:00Speaker 2: on to roster. If I'm the business owner, I'm going
- 23:02Speaker 2: to go, ah one, I've got minimum requirements that I
- 23:05Speaker 2: need to meet with Jess. I don't have any obligation
- 23:07Speaker 2: for hours for you. Also right now, per hour Jess
- 23:10Speaker 2: is cheaper, so really, regardless of weather, I love you, Beck,
- 23:15Speaker 2: or not. From a business perspective, it's just going to
- 23:18Speaker 2: make more sense to just roster jess On Schlank. I'm
- 23:20Speaker 2: just going to chuck jess On, like, let's pretend apples
- 23:23Speaker 2: with apples, you have exactly the same role. One's part time,
- 23:25Speaker 2: one's casual. I think that that could come into play,
- 23:28Speaker 2: but also that then doesn't feel fair. I would be asking, well,
- 23:32Speaker 2: why are we making this shift now? How does that work?
- 23:35Speaker 2: Where are the benefits for the employees in this circumstance.
- 23:39Speaker 2: I know you've been casual up until this point, and
- 23:41Speaker 2: they might go, well, actually, the business is far more
- 23:44Speaker 2: solid now like before we were up and down and
- 23:47Speaker 2: you know we're a new business or whatever it is.
- 23:49Speaker 2: Now we know you're on you. These are the hours
- 23:51Speaker 2: we need, this is the amount of stuff we need.
- 23:53Speaker 2: We're just going to do part time. And from a
- 23:55Speaker 2: business perspective, that makes a lot of sense and is
- 23:58Speaker 2: actually in their best interest because they could say, okay, well,
- 24:01Speaker 2: you know, we're just hiring this way and we if
- 24:04Speaker 2: you don't want to move over, you could go find
- 24:06Speaker 2: another job. Like sometimes it's just them trying to run
- 24:10Speaker 2: a clean, good business. So we need to take into
- 24:13Speaker 2: consideration I guess their motivation for this, and maybe it
- 24:16Speaker 2: was about making Hey, well the sun was shining. You
- 24:18Speaker 2: had this really high casual rate and that was really great.
- 24:21Speaker 2: But now everything's more solid and the option on the
- 24:24Speaker 2: table is a part time contract, Like, let's just have
- 24:26Speaker 2: a look at what those things look like and how
- 24:29Speaker 2: that benefits you. And I don't mean to end my
- 24:32Speaker 2: conversation on a I guess it's sour, OA, because it's
- 24:34Speaker 2: not sour. But sometimes we outgrow roles and jobs and people.
- 24:37Speaker 2: And if the option is going part time or finding
- 24:41Speaker 2: another casual role that really serves you and makes you
- 24:43Speaker 2: happy and gives you the remuneration that you are looking for,
- 24:46Speaker 2: well maybe that's the decision that needs to be made.
- 24:49Speaker 2: I'm not saying leave because they're making you sign it.
- 24:51Speaker 2: That's absolutely not it. But you might go, oh, well
- 24:53Speaker 2: that's okay. It was nice while it lasted. Yeah, totally, Beck,
- 24:56Speaker 2: Do you have anything to add? Would you say yes
- 24:59Speaker 2: or no?
- 24:59Speaker 4: Or for me, I had a similar thing same as
- 25:02Speaker 4: you guys, where I was working at a bowling alley.
- 25:07Speaker 4: They pretty much just went from casual to part time
- 25:10Speaker 4: and started like, oh, it wasn't threatening, but it was
- 25:13Speaker 4: very I'm gonna say, I'm going to say threatening and saying, like,
- 25:16Speaker 4: you know, if you don't move to part time, you
- 25:18Speaker 4: won't get shifts, et cetera. I kind of just had
- 25:20Speaker 4: to do that. But the decrease isn't as noticeable as
- 25:25Speaker 4: you might think it is. It depends obviously, you know,
- 25:27Speaker 4: as you're saying on your contract and things like that.
- 25:29Speaker 4: But I guess, like just adding up what it's a
- 25:31Speaker 4: bit hard to say, but like what your average SICKI
- 25:34Speaker 4: days are. Let's say you take four a year, which
- 25:37Speaker 4: is really isn't much. I love a good siki for
- 25:39Speaker 4: a mental health day for anything. Really, it is very important.
- 25:43Speaker 4: So let's say you take like four a year. Let's
- 25:46Speaker 4: say that's roughly seven hundred and eight hundred dollars a year.
- 25:50Speaker 4: Maybe you're making that in I don't know, like maybe
- 25:54Speaker 4: like so deducting that if that makes sense, because you
- 25:57Speaker 4: won't get paid that when you're a casual. If you
- 25:59Speaker 4: moved apart time, time will kind of even out, do
- 26:02Speaker 4: you know what I mean?
- 26:03Speaker 2: Yeah, and we leave and stuff. It's also you might say, no,
- 26:06Speaker 2: I don't want to take any leave, and that's okay,
- 26:08Speaker 2: But when you leave that job, your leave balance will
- 26:11Speaker 2: be paid out exactly, Yes, Like you're not working towards
- 26:14Speaker 2: anything in that aspect. I think that it all needs
- 26:17Speaker 2: to be taken into consideration, and it's honestly a bigger
- 26:20Speaker 2: conversation than I get more per hour. Like the benefits
- 26:24Speaker 2: and entitlements that exist are obviously financial, but also go
- 26:30Speaker 2: beyond that. Like I can't sometimes afford or historically couldn't
- 26:34Speaker 2: afford to take a mental health day. I was completely
- 26:36Speaker 2: burnt out. I go to work because I needed the money. Yeah,
- 26:38Speaker 2: how nice is it to go? Oh, I can call
- 26:40Speaker 2: in seek today and exactly I can stay in bed
- 26:43Speaker 2: and not stress about finances. So I think there's lots
- 26:46Speaker 2: of bros and lots of content. Ultimately, you have to
- 26:50Speaker 2: decide that for yourself. Somebody else can't tell you. But
- 26:52Speaker 2: we've given you the resources and the tools and hopefully
- 26:54Speaker 2: a little bit of insight to make that conversation and
- 26:56Speaker 2: that decision a little bit easier. All right, let's segue
- 27:00Speaker 2: into another community dilemma. Guys, we're going to talk about
- 27:03Speaker 2: prenups because this week I got a message and it
- 27:05Speaker 2: sounded like this, Hi, ladies, I'm getting married soon to
- 27:08Speaker 2: the love of my life. And I couldn't be more
- 27:11Speaker 2: excited and happy. I would really like to sign a prenup.
- 27:14Speaker 2: It's not at all that I think the marriage won't
- 27:16Speaker 2: work out. I've just worked so hard all my life
- 27:19Speaker 2: to create my own wealth and it's something I value
- 27:21Speaker 2: a lot. My parents separated when I was younger, and
- 27:24Speaker 2: money was very messy and a huge stress in both
- 27:27Speaker 2: of their lives. After watching this happen, I made it
- 27:30Speaker 2: my mission to become financially independent. Anyway, my question is
- 27:34Speaker 2: how do I bring this up with my fiance. I
- 27:36Speaker 2: don't want him to be hurt or take this personally,
- 27:39Speaker 2: but I'm worried he will I will not. Currently we
- 27:41Speaker 2: have our own finances. Nothing is combined yet. Thank you
- 27:45Speaker 2: so much.
- 27:45Speaker 4: All right, guys, do you want to go first?
- 27:48Speaker 3: Jess, I will start by saying prenups are a thing.
- 27:51Speaker 3: In Australia. We have the BFA binding financial Agreement.
- 27:54Speaker 2: I don't even need to be on this podcast if
- 27:56Speaker 2: you want to know, ah, well.
- 27:57Speaker 3: We've done a full episode on that, so type into
- 28:00Speaker 3: your podcast or it might be underbinding financial agreements. Actually
- 28:05Speaker 3: tied that into your podcast up and it should come up.
- 28:08Speaker 3: I personally, I'm a big fan of the BFA, I'm
- 28:12Speaker 3: all for it. Similar to our community member, my partner
- 28:14Speaker 3: and I currently have entirely separate finances. As you guys
- 28:16Speaker 3: know if you listen to the property playbook shameless plot,
- 28:19Speaker 3: I'm trying to buy a house.
- 28:20Speaker 2: Great podcast podcastic host, I.
- 28:24Speaker 3: Think so too, Thank you so much. But I have
- 28:26Speaker 3: literally already had the conversation with my partner and said, hey,
- 28:29Speaker 3: if I buy a house, we will be putting a
- 28:30Speaker 3: BFA in place.
- 28:31Speaker 2: I'm sexy.
- 28:33Speaker 3: Have all of my friends, most of them have shared finances,
- 28:36Speaker 3: Several of them are married or have children. I have
- 28:38Speaker 3: said to all of them, none of whom currently have,
- 28:41Speaker 3: You're like the pesty.
- 28:42Speaker 2: Aren't who I have an account with money, so you
- 28:45Speaker 2: can leave whenever you want.
- 28:46Speaker 3: Literally, I've learned from the best, and I basically just
- 28:48Speaker 3: parrot Victoria and I say, hey, girly, I think for me,
- 28:56Speaker 3: it is really and the way that I explained it
- 28:57Speaker 3: to my girlfriends, because everyone listening, you're basically my girlfriend.
- 29:00Speaker 3: I pretty much have said. The way that I approach
- 29:02Speaker 3: it with my partner and the way that I would
- 29:03Speaker 3: approach it with anybody is saying It's not about saying
- 29:07Speaker 3: I think you're going to take half my money. It's
- 29:09Speaker 3: not because I think you're a bad person. It's because
- 29:12Speaker 3: I want both of us in this relationship to be
- 29:15Speaker 3: looked after, because I care about you and I care
- 29:17Speaker 3: about me, and I think that these choices are best
- 29:21Speaker 3: being laid out now while we care about each other.
- 29:24Speaker 3: Because I think the thing that we've seen through our
- 29:26Speaker 3: money diaries and through you know, just things that we've
- 29:29Speaker 3: heard and seen here and there, is that when things
- 29:32Speaker 3: go wrong, you're not expecting it, and it makes things
- 29:36Speaker 3: harder if you're not prepared. So if I was in
- 29:38Speaker 3: a relationship with my partner and I cheated on my partner,
- 29:41Speaker 3: he's probably not going to be thrilled with me.
- 29:43Speaker 2: So if we're then I wouldn't be thrilled with you. No,
- 29:45Speaker 2: no better than that.
- 29:46Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 29:47Speaker 3: So then if we're trying to divide up assets, I
- 29:49Speaker 3: think there's all of this animosity, there's emotion, even if
- 29:52Speaker 3: there's no cheating, even if you're just breaking up because
- 29:54Speaker 3: it didn't work out, there's all of these things going
- 29:56Speaker 3: on that mean maybe not everybody's in the fairest kind mindset.
- 30:01Speaker 3: Whereas if you have an agreement in place that you've
- 30:03Speaker 3: put together when you both love each other, when you
- 30:05Speaker 3: both care about each other, when you're both worn the
- 30:07Speaker 3: best for each other exactly, then I feel like you're
- 30:10Speaker 3: going to have the best possible outcome. And yes, people
- 30:13Speaker 3: say that they're not fully air tight in the way
- 30:15Speaker 3: that maybe your prenup is in the US, like there's
- 30:17Speaker 3: you know, all of these nuancewers, which again were covered
- 30:19Speaker 3: in the episode. But I think that having something in
- 30:23Speaker 3: place is just nice to protect everybody. Like in the
- 30:26Speaker 3: same way that if I got a BFA it was
- 30:28Speaker 3: would be to protect me, we would also be putting
- 30:31Speaker 3: clauses in there to protect my partner as well. And
- 30:33Speaker 3: so I think you go two ways one hundred percent.
- 30:35Speaker 3: Like this isn't just about me saying I think you're
- 30:37Speaker 3: going to take my money and I want to make
- 30:39Speaker 3: sure that you can't do that, you gold digger. It's
- 30:41Speaker 3: about being like I want both of.
- 30:43Speaker 2: Us to be money.
- 30:44Speaker 4: I was going to say, no, we were this side
- 30:50Speaker 4: of you.
- 30:51Speaker 3: Yes you have at my Barbie party, that's true. I
- 30:53Speaker 3: did drop it.
- 30:54Speaker 2: She was like this super classy fairy and I was
- 30:58Speaker 2: crumping on the desk floor. It was a lot.
- 31:03Speaker 3: No, But yeah, I think just putting something in place.
- 31:05Speaker 3: I mean, like, hey, it's not just about me, it's
- 31:06Speaker 3: about us, and I want us to be looked after, rain,
- 31:09Speaker 3: hail or shine. Do we hope that we never have
- 31:11Speaker 3: to use it?
- 31:11Speaker 2: Absolutely?
- 31:12Speaker 3: I hope. It's the most useless piece of paper that
- 31:13Speaker 3: I own. However, you don't know what you don't.
- 31:16Speaker 2: Know, and it kind of sucks as someone who's spent
- 31:19Speaker 2: so much on their wedding speaking from experience. Thankfully I
- 31:23Speaker 2: haven't gone through a divorce yet, but the statistics are
- 31:26Speaker 2: that more than half of all marriages here in Australia
- 31:29Speaker 2: end up in divorce. Christ So nobody goes into a
- 31:32Speaker 2: marriage with the expectation that's not going to work out.
- 31:34Speaker 2: It's an expensive process with a lot of legal obligations
- 31:37Speaker 2: that you don't accidentally fall into. It's not oh, we
- 31:40Speaker 2: woke up and we got married in Vegas, because you
- 31:42Speaker 2: actually have to register a marriage in Australia or the
- 31:45Speaker 2: intention to get married. I believe it's like more than
- 31:48Speaker 2: two weeks before the wedding.
- 31:50Speaker 3: You can't like get drunk and just get shotgun married here.
- 31:52Speaker 2: It's not a thing. No, it's a month before the
- 31:54Speaker 2: wedding and you can't just get shotgun married. So it
- 31:57Speaker 2: was on an accident, like you guys did this and
- 31:59Speaker 2: had enough thinking time to work out whether it is
- 32:01Speaker 2: a good idea or not. And so I think just
- 32:03Speaker 2: sitting down and yet reiterating what you were saying, I
- 32:05Speaker 2: think my way of approaching it would be flipping the narrative.
- 32:10Speaker 2: I'm not going to talk about my assets because that
- 32:12Speaker 2: can make me look really self absorbed really quickly. I'm
- 32:15Speaker 2: actually going to say, hey, I want us and I
- 32:16Speaker 2: want you to be protected. And I think that that's
- 32:19Speaker 2: the best way to have a good conversation is immediately
- 32:22Speaker 2: by putting yourself in their shoes. Like it does feel
- 32:25Speaker 2: confrontational if I say, hey, Beck, we're getting married. I
- 32:27Speaker 2: just want to make sure my stuff's protected from you,
- 32:30Speaker 2: right Like that feels a bit like, oh, I didn't
- 32:32Speaker 2: realize you were worried about your stuff being exposed to me.
- 32:35Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 32:35Speaker 2: Whereas if I approach the conversation with kindness and I say, hey, Beck,
- 32:39Speaker 2: I love you with absolutely everything I have and I
- 32:41Speaker 2: cannot wait to get married. But there's this podcast that
- 32:45Speaker 2: I've been listening to and blame me. I want to
- 32:48Speaker 2: be that person that you can just blame for anything.
- 32:49Speaker 2: I don't care if you Barna doesn't like me, I
- 32:52Speaker 2: really don't, so you can tell them that it's my fault. Oh,
- 32:55Speaker 2: my friend Victoria told me about this really weird concept
- 32:57Speaker 2: of binding financial agreement. Kind of makes sense. What do
- 32:59Speaker 2: you you think, Like, don't just start with being aggressive.
- 33:03Speaker 2: I need to protect my stuff. Start with this open,
- 33:06Speaker 2: honest conversation. Like, oh, I was listening to this podcast.
- 33:09Speaker 2: I hadn't really thought about it because you're kind of
- 33:12Speaker 2: a long way down the track. So if you're talking
- 33:15Speaker 2: about a binding financial agreement and this person is your fiance,
- 33:19Speaker 2: you've already been their girlfriend or their boyfriend or their
- 33:21Speaker 2: partner for a while, I'm assuming and if this topic
- 33:23Speaker 2: hasn't come up before, they might be a little bit
- 33:25Speaker 2: jarred by it. So I think blaming another source or
- 33:29Speaker 2: outsourcing it to become, you know, Jessin Beckham Victoria's fault.
- 33:33Speaker 2: I would love to be the reason you've got a
- 33:35Speaker 2: binding financial agreement in place, like, I'm all for it.
- 33:38Speaker 2: Use me, But I think sitting down and having that
- 33:41Speaker 2: conversation is really important. And there's two folds to it, right, So,
- 33:45Speaker 2: as you guys know, I've spoken about it before, I
- 33:48Speaker 2: have one with my husband. It was established when we
- 33:50Speaker 2: moved in together, not when we got married. We lived
- 33:53Speaker 2: together four years before we got married. But I was like,
- 33:56Speaker 2: ain't no man gonna take advantage of me. I don't
- 33:58Speaker 2: know if you know me well enough, but that obviously happened.
- 34:01Speaker 2: But there were two conversations there. There was protecting the
- 34:04Speaker 2: me that went into the relationship with my partner, and
- 34:08Speaker 2: she didn't have the success and the situation that she's
- 34:12Speaker 2: in today, so there was protecting that. But then there
- 34:16Speaker 2: was also protecting what we were creating together. And so
- 34:19Speaker 2: for me, I know, and this might be different for everybody,
- 34:23Speaker 2: but I know to get where I am today and
- 34:25Speaker 2: have the life I have and have the assets that
- 34:28Speaker 2: we have, regardless of who put what dollar ware, it
- 34:32Speaker 2: was a joint effort between my husband and I, and
- 34:35Speaker 2: so that is a very different conversation if we divorced,
- 34:40Speaker 2: as to you know, who owns what. The thing that
- 34:42Speaker 2: was important to me was protecting my businesses because if
- 34:45Speaker 2: my relationship doesn't work out, well, you guys know, I'll
- 34:48Speaker 2: be even more obsessed with you, and I didn't want
- 34:51Speaker 2: that to come into play. So those were the things
- 34:53Speaker 2: I wanted to protect. And then you know Jess's situation
- 34:55Speaker 2: is different again, she's buying a house on her and
- 34:58Speaker 2: I didn't have property. When I got in a relationship
- 35:00Speaker 2: with my husband, I was in debt, Like he didn't
- 35:02Speaker 2: have anything. I was like, do you want it? You
- 35:04Speaker 2: can have it, but your circumstance is the actual physical
- 35:09Speaker 2: house which someone could contest, whereas mine was a business.
- 35:12Speaker 2: It might be a car, it might be an inheritance,
- 35:14Speaker 2: it might be anything, but having these literally, do you know?
- 35:18Speaker 2: When I was with my ex boyfriend, we got a cat, Bailey,
- 35:21Speaker 2: the love of my life. The day I got him,
- 35:23Speaker 2: I was like, by the way, this is my cat. Yeah,
- 35:26Speaker 2: Like I have paid one hundred percent for him. I
- 35:29Speaker 2: will cover all of his costs because if we ever
- 35:32Speaker 2: break up, because I think deep down I kind of
- 35:34Speaker 2: knew it wasn't going to work out long term. I
- 35:35Speaker 2: don't know. I didn't know at that time. Otherwise I
- 35:37Speaker 2: wouldn't have been getting a pet with the person, right.
- 35:40Speaker 2: I was like, this cat is mine. If we ever
- 35:42Speaker 2: break up, this is my cat. It's not even a
- 35:44Speaker 2: conversation I'm going to engage in. Yeah, And we broke up,
- 35:48Speaker 2: and I was like, I'm glad I had that conversation
- 35:50Speaker 2: cat let's.
- 35:51Speaker 4: Go lucky lucky and now I completely agree with all
- 35:54Speaker 4: of that. I would say, make sure that your partner
- 35:56Speaker 4: knows that you're not planning for the demise of your
- 35:58Speaker 4: relationship A really, because I think that's maybe something that
- 36:02Speaker 4: your partner might think and maybe a version of me
- 36:06Speaker 4: that's not as secure with the person I'm dating, I
- 36:08Speaker 4: would maybe think, are you preparing for us to not last?
- 36:12Speaker 4: But the reality is am I not? It might, It
- 36:14Speaker 4: doesn't matter either way. Better to be safe than sorry.
- 36:18Speaker 2: And better to have that conversation when you're in a
- 36:20Speaker 2: good place, because if you're in a bit of an
- 36:22Speaker 2: awkward position or you've just recently had an argument, like
- 36:25Speaker 2: now's not the time I love, Like, don't bring it
- 36:27Speaker 2: up then, because your partner will think that you're catastrophizing
- 36:30Speaker 2: and maybe trying to protect yourself and like go down
- 36:33Speaker 2: that thought pattern. Sure, I mean, if Steve cheats on me,
- 36:36Speaker 2: I'm going to be taking him to the cleanness.
- 36:38Speaker 3: So that's the thing that would be Lark, good luck.
- 36:44Speaker 2: In your favor, yes, spikdi. What did our community say? So?
- 36:47Speaker 2: There were lots of comments, lots very similar to what
- 36:50Speaker 2: Jess said, A lot of people said, go for it,
- 36:52Speaker 2: just ask at an appropriate time and prepare for questions.
- 36:55Speaker 2: They might not be on the same page as you.
- 36:57Speaker 2: So that's a really good point bringing up that you
- 37:00Speaker 2: might be so ready to have a conversation about a
- 37:02Speaker 2: binding financial agreement, that does not mean that they are
- 37:05Speaker 2: in the mental space for it. So I think pre
- 37:07Speaker 2: planning is important. Maybe going hey, jes, I've been listening
- 37:11Speaker 2: to this podcasts. They really recommend before we get married
- 37:15Speaker 2: having a binding financial agreement. Do you want to have
- 37:17Speaker 2: a chat about that at some point? Do you want
- 37:20Speaker 2: to go away, do your own research, have a bit
- 37:21Speaker 2: of a think about it. You know, I'm going to
- 37:23Speaker 2: do a bit more research too, Like I'm not ready
- 37:24Speaker 2: to have the conversation yet, but go a wages, have
- 37:27Speaker 2: a think about it, and then you know, maybe next
- 37:29Speaker 2: week over dinner we can have a chat. They've had
- 37:32Speaker 2: the time to I guess absorb that do their own
- 37:34Speaker 2: research instead of you bombarding them. Because arguably, if you've
- 37:38Speaker 2: listened to our binding financial Agreement episode, just listen to
- 37:41Speaker 2: the conversations we've had about a state planning, You've listened
- 37:44Speaker 2: to that you are so ready for that and prepared,
- 37:46Speaker 2: and they might not be, so give them that grace.
- 37:50Speaker 2: Someone else said, we have a separate account each and
- 37:53Speaker 2: a joint one. It means that we have our own
- 37:55Speaker 2: safety net and we always will. How are you planning
- 37:58Speaker 2: or managing money together as you grow? What does that
- 38:01Speaker 2: look like? Are you getting married and then joining finances
- 38:04Speaker 2: or is everything going to stay exactly the same as
- 38:06Speaker 2: it was. Maybe we could have a bigger conversation about
- 38:08Speaker 2: money and life and sorting stuff out after we get married.
- 38:11Speaker 2: Is anything going to change? And then the binding financial
- 38:14Speaker 2: agreement could be part of that conversation. So it's just
- 38:17Speaker 2: a little key part of the wider conversation about how
- 38:21Speaker 2: we manage money because there's lots of things to consider.
- 38:23Speaker 2: It's also like health insurance. It can be cheaper if
- 38:27Speaker 2: you've got like a couple's policy.
- 38:29Speaker 3: Do we share a Spotify account? Oh my gosh, No,
- 38:31Speaker 3: there's all the things as zero.
- 38:33Speaker 2: No, we don't share a Spotify account because his music taste?
- 38:37Speaker 2: Uh uh my Spotify, stop telling me I like this trash.
- 38:41Speaker 2: I don't.
- 38:41Speaker 4: It does suck that you can't have individual accounts sharing
- 38:45Speaker 4: spot Is it right?
- 38:46Speaker 3: No, that's not right. You can have different because like
- 38:48Speaker 3: six people using my Spotify. I can't remember, and I
- 38:50Speaker 3: had no idea. I wasn't seeing their playlist. Oh okay,
- 38:52Speaker 3: I see.
- 38:53Speaker 2: I don't know how that worked because my playlists become
- 38:55Speaker 2: all of Stave's music, and then Taylor Swift gets the
- 38:58Speaker 2: Yeat and that's all I want to hear. Accepted, all right.
- 39:01Speaker 2: Someone says these really should have been a discussion before
- 39:04Speaker 2: you got engaged, not weeks before. Don't need the judgment.
- 39:08Speaker 2: We don't need the judgment asking now is the best
- 39:11Speaker 2: time because you've just learned about it and you're just considering.
- 39:15Speaker 2: I don't think we need to be going. I should
- 39:17Speaker 2: have already done that. You know what, there's a lot
- 39:19Speaker 2: of things I should have already done that I've never done.
- 39:21Speaker 2: You know what.
- 39:21Speaker 4: They say the best time to plant a tree is
- 39:23Speaker 4: one hundred years ago, Yeah, or today, exactly, something like that.
- 39:27Speaker 2: They say it's beautiful. They also say that about investing.
- 39:31Speaker 2: The best time to invest was one hundred years ago,
- 39:33Speaker 2: but the second best time is today.
- 39:35Speaker 3: Yes, that's the way.
- 39:36Speaker 2: Know, you said the exact same thing. I'm just really
- 39:38Speaker 2: driving home that you were right. Thank you. Someone said,
- 39:41Speaker 2: I don't have a partner yet, but I've worked really
- 39:43Speaker 2: hard and I will be protecting my assets. Yes, queen
- 39:46Speaker 2: get a queen. Yes. Someone said she definitely should do it.
- 39:49Speaker 2: If he's offended, then he has his head in the sand.
- 39:52Speaker 2: You've been listening to my book. Someone said, more so
- 39:56Speaker 2: for my peace of mind than what he thinks. He
- 39:58Speaker 2: will take it as he can. Oh, I just feel
- 40:02Speaker 2: like we just need to approach all these conversations with
- 40:04Speaker 2: a lot of kindness. And someone said, after losing a
- 40:07Speaker 2: lot more than twenty thousand dollars to my ex, my
- 40:10Speaker 2: now partner is the one who suggested I should protect myself.
- 40:13Speaker 4: Yeah, I like that's good.
- 40:14Speaker 2: I love that. And someone said she should just say
- 40:17Speaker 2: exactly what she said in that message. It was very kind. Yes,
- 40:20Speaker 2: So there's just been a lot of I guess support.
- 40:23Speaker 2: I think the most important thing is that, yes, I agree,
- 40:26Speaker 2: it would have been beautiful to have this conversation before
- 40:29Speaker 2: getting engaged. But you don't know when you're going to
- 40:32Speaker 2: get engaged. No. I knew because my partner had a
- 40:35Speaker 2: ring and he told me he had a ring, and
- 40:37Speaker 2: so I was really angsty about it. But like, not
- 40:39Speaker 2: everyone's partner does that for them, you know, really totally,
- 40:42Speaker 2: So it might have been a surprise, and you hadn't
- 40:44Speaker 2: had that conversation yet.
- 40:45Speaker 4: Like maybe you just didn't think about it until right now.
- 40:47Speaker 4: That's okay, exactly. You might be married already. Yeah, that's
- 40:51Speaker 4: not too late to have that conversation. Yeah, like I
- 40:53Speaker 4: would be having that conversation irrespective of where you are
- 40:57Speaker 4: in that journey of your relationship, because ultimately, it doesn't
- 41:01Speaker 4: just protect you, it protects your partner.
- 41:03Speaker 2: And that's the point. It's a two sided agreement. It's
- 41:07Speaker 2: not just me going, hey, just sign this. It puts
- 41:09Speaker 2: me in the best position if you ever leave me.
- 41:11Speaker 2: Ill No, No, David, el David still David. I don't
- 41:16Speaker 2: get the reference, but I like it.
- 41:18Speaker 4: Shit's Creak.
- 41:19Speaker 2: I gotta watch that, do you know? My first dance
- 41:21Speaker 2: was simply the best version from Shit's Creek iconic, truly iconic,
- 41:26Speaker 2: and absolutely never posted that because it was a moment
- 41:28Speaker 2: for me. Oh beautiful, but you can go look that up.
- 41:31Speaker 2: It was a very good song. Cool, you're welcome for
- 41:32Speaker 2: the wedding song recommendation. My friend who's currently engaged to
- 41:36Speaker 2: be a fiance or we engaged to be married.
- 41:38Speaker 3: Exciting.
- 41:39Speaker 2: All right, we will see you next week. Guys, have
- 41:41Speaker 2: the best weekend. We love you all and get your
- 41:43Speaker 2: binding financial agreements in place a SAP, Bye bye. The
