- 0:56SPEAKER_00: Today, on besties in your back pocket, we're missing one of our besties again, but we got another bestie with us.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: We've got Carrie Esmale.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: She's incredible.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: Such a freaking vibe.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: She's all about um this amazing business called the fun side.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: She brings together women entre freakingpreneurs, making their dreams happen.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: And instead of hustling and grinding their way to it, they're gonna have fun.
- 1:21SPEAKER_02: What and still be successful and still make their dreams happen?
- 1:28SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 1:29SPEAKER_02: Laugh with me.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, no, I'm like literally so excited to have you here.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: I'm so excited to be you.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, I remember like seeing you online and was like, oh my god, she's incredible.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: I must meet her.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: We must be friends.
- 1:42SPEAKER_02: We must be friends.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: Saying clutch, wow, okay, I want to pick your brain about everything because I think everything you do, I'm like, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: I'm like, let's do it, please.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: Um, let's dive into the nitty-gritty of creativity.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: How do you how do you spark creativity when you're not feeling so creative?
- 2:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, what a question.
- 2:05SPEAKER_01: And for those whose work is so creativity-centric, this is a huge, very important question.
- 2:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:13SPEAKER_01: I was talking to my best friend the other day and I said, I have never come up with great shit when I'm sitting there trying to come up with free shit.
- 2:22SPEAKER_01: So true.
- 2:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: So true.
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: So, like, first and foremost, not draw, not not trying, but trying in a completely different way than what we know, right?
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: Not like sitting down and going to the drawing board and trying to come up with something, but unplugging and doing what you know to do to put yourself in a really inspired state.
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: Your environment, your activity is like what you're consuming, what inspires you.
- 2:51SPEAKER_01: Because flow is flow, right?
- 2:53SPEAKER_01: So if we can just find the flow, even if it's not around the topic that we know we want to be creating for, we can then kind of just put different parameters on it.
- 3:05SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 3:05SPEAKER_01: Like if you're flowing your painting and you're in a flow state, and then mid-flow state, you're like, okay, so this project I'm working on, what about that?
- 3:15SPEAKER_01: Boom, just shift over and there she blews.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: I literally cannot agree more.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: I'm like so many thoughts are flowing through me right now.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: A, I'm thinking about the one year where I like traveled the world by myself and was like, A, barely on my phone.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: Probably helped a lot to be like, I'm not just like scrolling and consuming all the time.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: Not the most inspirational.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: Um, but also was like, I'm gonna teach yoga all another world and like go where inspiration strikes me and like make my dreams a reality and be scared shitless doing it.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: I was so inspired that year.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: Like, I feel like I was just like, let me like write all these things and like create all these things in the world.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: And um, you know, I think it's a new challenge to be like, okay, can I go and live a normal ass life and learn how to recreate that?
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: Like a regular ass, every-to-day human that's not just like, let me just go wherever, whatever.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: Uh right, and let me cultivate flow uh right here, right now in this living room.
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: Like, how do you do that in within the confinements of a regular maybe nine to five boys?
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: I can.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you totally can.
- 4:20SPEAKER_01: What is what is an inspiring, like person type of art place?
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: What inspires you?
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: Like you know you're gonna get inspired.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: Ooh, that's I feel really inspired whenever I'm in a room where I mean if someone's like passionate about something and they're just feeling lit up about it, I am just like a moth to light.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: Like, I don't even care what you're talking about.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: If you're just lit up by it, I'm lit up by it.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: Um, I get really inspired seeing other um public speakers that are like good and they can captivate the room.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: You can feel the energy, like like almost like everyone's goosebumps, kind of like hair standing on end.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: You're like, wow, I love that.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: Um, but anything where I'm like lapping, playing with my friends, immediately inspired, immediately in a flow state.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: And like that does it for me.
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: Yes, yes.
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: And I love just the words that you just used because have you seen the fun pyramid?
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the sun methodology.
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: So the layers are connection play creativity with intentionality because they lead into each other.
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: Like the connection is step number one, right?
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: It's such a human need.
- 5:27SPEAKER_01: And then the playfulness, it loosens you up, it gets you thinking, gets your your brain, your neuro neuroplasticity really, you know, really does.
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: Plasticiting, it does.
- 5:36SPEAKER_01: And then bam, you just apply it to whatever it is you want to create.
- 5:40SPEAKER_01: And it's it's just fireworks.
- 5:42SPEAKER_01: Oh my god.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: I mean, they say like work smarter, not harder, but it's almost like work funner, not harder.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: I know I love that.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: I'm like, just that my brain was just like neuroplasticity, and I'm like, how have I never connected these dots before?
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: Work funner, not harder.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: Work funner, not harder.
- 6:02SPEAKER_01: Holy crap.
- 6:03SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 6:03SPEAKER_01: We just made that a verb also.
- 6:06SPEAKER_02: And neuroplasticity.
- 6:07SPEAKER_02: It's plasticity.
- 6:08SPEAKER_02: It's neuroplasticity happening.
- 6:12SPEAKER_02: That was hilarious.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: Oh my god.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: I mean, literally, I don't know if you've heard the stat though about play where um you have to do something, gosh, it's hundreds of times like a normal, like, let me learn this new pattern.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: You have to repeat it hundreds of times for it to be the new thing.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: And when you play, it's like 10 to 30.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: It's crazy.
- 6:30SPEAKER_01: And your place you're just like.
- 6:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:32SPEAKER_01: It's wild.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: And it's so good.
- 6:34SPEAKER_01: I was like, I could nerd out about play.
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: It's so good for your long-term mental health, short-term and long term, but I find a long term really fascinating.
- 6:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:44SPEAKER_01: Because it lowers your playing like through adulthood on a consistent basis.
- 6:49SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 6:50SPEAKER_01: Lowers your likelihood of getting Alzheimer's disease by like 60%.
- 6:54SPEAKER_01: 60?
- 6:55SPEAKER_01: That's a fat percentage.
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: That's big.
- 6:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:58SPEAKER_01: And that's that's real.
- 7:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 7:01SPEAKER_01: Who shook?
- 7:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 7:03SPEAKER_01: So it's how it's so healthy, you know.
- 7:06SPEAKER_01: The the point of that, it's so healthy for the brain.
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: It's like movement for the brain.
- 7:10SPEAKER_01: Oh my God.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: It makes my bra I have a like limiting belief sometimes that my brain is broken.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: I'm like, oh, that's wrong with me.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: What can I sit behind the computer all day and make these systems?
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: And like, oh, I just not designed to be like this.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: It's totally fine.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: Um, but most of us aren't.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: And most of us aren't.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: But then when I lean into play, I'm like, oh my God, I'm a literal super freaking human.
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: Like, I can do anything.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: It just like changes my body, my state, my biochemistry, like in a freaking instant and taps me into that flow, that potential that you're talking about.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 7:44SPEAKER_01: And it's probably like so layered too around just humans not optimating, optimizing, operating optimally on screens.
- 7:53SPEAKER_01: Oh my god.
- 7:54SPEAKER_01: The amount of time we spend on screens, that's not like that's not healthy for the body, for the brain, for the creativity, for the anxiety.
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: Oh my god, right?
- 8:03SPEAKER_01: Everything.
- 8:04SPEAKER_02: It's it's alarming.
- 8:06SPEAKER_01: It is alarming.
- 8:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 8:08SPEAKER_01: I was talking to a friend yesterday.
- 8:09SPEAKER_01: He recently went on a mission trip to Ecuador and he went to a place, a village that has never ever met people from the outside before.
- 8:19SPEAKER_01: Ever.
- 8:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: That's wild, right?
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: And so, and then he went to a little bit more of a developed town.
- 8:28SPEAKER_01: And the town, the village that hadn't met people didn't have that the kids didn't have phones.
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: And the town that was more developed, they did have phones.
- 8:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 8:37SPEAKER_01: And he said it was the most alarming thing that he made me, that was his biggest takeaway of the whole trip was seeing how kids and adolescents interacted and what they were doing, the creative games they were doing.
- 8:49SPEAKER_01: They were playing soccer with a flip-flop.
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: They were interacting with each other.
- 8:53SPEAKER_01: They were playing in all different ways, right?
- 8:54SPEAKER_01: They had a completely different energy, different way of life.
- 8:57SPEAKER_01: And then the town that did have phones, he said everyone was just gathered around whoever had a phone and they were just like doom scrolling and also depressed because those kids had comparison.
- 9:09SPEAKER_01: They are able to see everyone else's life and say, Oh my gosh, I live in a shithole.
- 9:13SPEAKER_01: Whereas if you're not comparing yourself, you're not hating our vice, you're just finding a joy, shiny.
- 9:19SPEAKER_01: Oh, right.
- 9:20SPEAKER_01: You know, oh my God.
- 9:22SPEAKER_01: And we're we're living in that.
- 9:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:24SPEAKER_01: You know, like I in my book, I talk about how if you go up bird's eye view and look down, if you could see through everybody's like roofs of their houses, yeah, you would just see people in boxes staring at a wall tot all day long.
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: And then they go from staring at this wall to going downstairs and staring at that wall.
- 9:44SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: And when we go to work and they stare at that wall, and then they go to the bathroom and they stare at their like phone in the hand, just wall after wall after wall.
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 9:51SPEAKER_01: And if you time lapse that, it would probably freak you the fuck out to see us living like that.
- 9:57SPEAKER_01: But that's like actually what we're doing.
- 9:59SPEAKER_01: And then we're wondering why we can't be creative, and we're wondering why we feel depressed.
- 10:02SPEAKER_01: And we're wondering all the things.
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: I know you have a story.
- 10:05SPEAKER_01: Oh, absolutely.
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: Like that goes deep for you, right?
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: I mean, because A, like, we're humans, and I really believe that we're here to create.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: Like, there is something in creativity, you know, it's not like, oh, I'm a painter, or like, um, like, you know, like it doesn't have to be the arts.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: It's creativity is so many different forms.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: So everyone is creative.
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: And I think we all have this inner desire and need to create as humans.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: So those kids that are just like in consumption mode that you were talking about, I bet that's just also making them like just so depressed to fall into that.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: And that's honestly like in retrospect, when I was really struggling in my depression and horrible social anxiety for 10 years and incredible anxiety, panic attacks, like the whole just like, oh, let's just get a nice scroll up here all the mental health things, and uh let's give Amy a nice dose of all of them.
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, sure, let's give a real hero journey here.
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: Um I was really consuming a lot during those times.
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: Like I was not creating, I mean, I wasn't feeling like there was much that I wanted to create.
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: I was just kind of like trying to like get through the day and trying to make everyone think that I was okay, but leaning into my joy to my play.
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: After, I mean, at that point in my journey, I'm gonna say it was probably five years into like the meditation and the breath work and like let me like whim hoff and let me uh do all of the right things.
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: And I got like a little better.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: Like I was not like, oh my god, I hate myself and like maybe want to kill myself.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: But when I started playing and leaning into like what brings me life, I changed very quickly.
- 11:38SPEAKER_00: Like within a year, people would feel like, oh my god, who are you?
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: And I was like, I don't even, I feel like every month I'm getting a new person of myself to this day.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: I mean, I'm like, wow, I just changed jerk and boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: And yeah, I feel like it's unleashed a level within me.
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: I'm like, I didn't even know I could feel this like unhinged.
- 11:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, in a good way.
- 12:01SPEAKER_01: Yes, yeah, because you're not weighed down by the heaviness.
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: The things that are hard or challenge, just challenging for you aren't like heavy and dying you down.
- 12:11SPEAKER_01: You have this lighthearted energy about you, and it allows you to rise.
- 12:14SPEAKER_01: And I think that sometimes it can just be as simple as what rises, something that's heavy or like, yes, so true.
- 12:24SPEAKER_01: You're like a guru.
- 12:27SPEAKER_01: And take credit for that one.
- 12:29SPEAKER_01: My uh best friend's husband said that to me, and I was like, That is it right there.
- 12:32SPEAKER_01: That's like a mic drop moment.
- 12:34SPEAKER_01: That's all you need to think about.
- 12:36SPEAKER_01: That's if you can lighten the edgy, lighten the way that you're moving through life, you will rise a lot faster.
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: It's so true though.
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: Like, I mean, I can think in retrospect in the moments where I felt like I was like, whoa, like something is shifting.
- 12:49SPEAKER_00: It was not in the moments where I'm like, I'm grinding and I'm which I mean, I still fall into those little patterns every now and then like uh yes, work harder and I'm like, wow, this sucks.
- 13:00SPEAKER_00: It sucks.
- 13:01SPEAKER_02: This sucks.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: It's too short for this shit.
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: It really is.
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: I mean, especially like you're creating your dreams, which is not an easy path.
- 13:07SPEAKER_00: It's not for the thing to freaking hark here, you know?
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: Like, you gotta make it button.
- 13:12SPEAKER_01: You have to, and if you if you like for you know, there's all this science and there's all this logical reason, and I like to lean that way because I'm a very logical thinker, so my brain needed that to like to wrap around to really justify the idea of funnifying my life and my in shooting joy, but all that aside, isn't you enjoying your life, which you never know it's when it's gonna end, by the way?
- 13:37SPEAKER_01: Oh true.
- 13:37SPEAKER_01: Isn't that reason enough?
- 13:39SPEAKER_01: Truly, truly I mean it's the point of it all, no?
- 13:45SPEAKER_01: That is the point of it all.
- 13:46SPEAKER_01: I how do you feel about the idea or the philosophy that the purpose of your life is to enjoy it?
- 13:55SPEAKER_00: Oh, I love it.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: I mean, I think that the purpose of your life is to enjoy it, and then I'm also like, I think we're here to like grow and learn.
- 14:02SPEAKER_00: There's a big like oh like ever-evolving kind of nature that I think each of us has.
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: Here's a question.
- 14:11SPEAKER_01: Do you think life can be fully in like enjoyed to the fullest without putting effort into learning and growing?
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: Ooh That's a good question.
- 14:23SPEAKER_00: No, I feel like to me, I'm like, I think we get stale because I think that when you remain in your comfort zone for too long, it stops being fun and enjoying.
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: There's something about we let me continue to expand out and what used to be edgy at some point becomes your new comfort zone, and then you get to continue to keep growing.
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: Yes, keep pushing that edge because it makes you feel alive, and that odd completely.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: And that's like the whole point of life.
- 14:49SPEAKER_00: We're like, I want to feel alive.
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: I'm a human being, I had this one life, and what how how am I gonna spend my precious moments here?
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: Am I gonna be alive during it?
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 14:58SPEAKER_01: And I think that's the part that is missing because there's all this emphasis.
- 15:02SPEAKER_01: You and I have similar stories in the sense of we were doing the meditation, but journaling, the breath work, whatever else falls in that personal development bucket, we were doing it, and there was still something missing, a big piece missing.
- 15:17SPEAKER_01: It was that feeling alive feeling, which is the fun and the joy.
- 15:22SPEAKER_01: And for some reason, we emphasize the growth and the personal development.
- 15:27SPEAKER_01: It emphasizes spirituality, we emphasize the success, but not that.
- 15:32SPEAKER_01: And I think there's a there's a wave happening now where people like us, we are talking about and we're saying this is really important.
- 15:38SPEAKER_01: It's important to choose joy and to have fun and to enjoy your life.
- 15:41SPEAKER_01: But for a long time, that's just been kind of void.
- 15:44SPEAKER_00: Oh, absolutely.
- 15:45SPEAKER_00: I mean, I feel like it's a pretty revolutionary radical stance to take for many people.
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: Like, I feel like people, a lot of people, I'm curious what you think, but I feel a lot of people then like, oh, like, yeah, okay, but have a really hard time like actually embodying it.
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: Like, I think a little, you can see or like hear when you're talking to someone.
- 16:03SPEAKER_00: Oh, I can hear a part of you wants to get on board, and then it goes, but I don't want to get uncomfortable.
- 16:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:11SPEAKER_01: Totally.
- 16:11SPEAKER_00: Why do you think that's so uncomfortable for people?
- 16:15SPEAKER_01: Honestly, I think that the world teaches children to slowly over time dim their light, dim their creativity, dim their beaming joy, which most to all children have because that's the kind of what we're made of at the core.
- 16:35SPEAKER_01: And societal conditioning is like a blanket on top of that light.
- 16:40SPEAKER_01: And as you get older, you have to consciously break out of that and strip away all of that.
- 16:46SPEAKER_01: And it's a lot of work.
- 16:47SPEAKER_01: We've done the work.
- 16:48SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, it's a lot of work and the work keeps working.
- 16:51SPEAKER_01: The work keeps working.
- 16:52SPEAKER_01: And then when you are embodied, and I know that you'll probably resonate with this with that joy and you're fully expressing yourself, it's triggering to people.
- 17:00SPEAKER_01: And people don't like it.
- 17:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 17:02SPEAKER_01: And so not only do you have to do all that work to break out of that conditioning to return to your joyful self, but now you have to face the judgment of people.
- 17:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 17:12SPEAKER_01: Which is it's human nature to need to belong and to be liked, whatever it is.
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: Like so everyone's tolerance is different.
- 17:20SPEAKER_01: But if you are pressing other people's buttons, they're judging you, they're mocking you, whether it be on social media, on the playground, or in person or at work, that may that's an another barrier to having fun and choosing joy.
- 17:34SPEAKER_01: So I think that the barriers are so real, which is why it's so important that people who are advocating for this way of life are leading the way and creating spaces where it's a lot easier.
- 17:47SPEAKER_00: Oh, totally.
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: I mean, as you were saying about the kids, I used to work in a K through five school.
- 17:52SPEAKER_00: And I've, I mean, the kindergartners and me, we were tight.
- 17:55SPEAKER_00: Like we were they were like, Amy.
- 17:58SPEAKER_00: Like all 25 would like group on me and like, hi guys.
- 18:02SPEAKER_00: But it was like and I loved all of the kids in the school.
- 18:04SPEAKER_00: And but I got my in my job to work with all six of the grades.
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: I got to weave into all the classrooms and like do my thing.
- 18:11SPEAKER_00: And it was fascinating to see that light dim.
- 18:14SPEAKER_00: I mean, of course, the fifth graders still have their light, but to see, whoa, in just this short amount of years, these kids are like what nine, 10 years old by fifth graded, and seeing it just muffled.
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: And like it's like freaking foaming out of the mouth in the kindergarten room.
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: There's like, you know, just like, oh, okay, like literally foaming it.
- 18:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's kind of a lot there, buddy.
- 18:33SPEAKER_00: I love it.
- 18:34SPEAKER_00: But like, I okay, I need to check myself.
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: And it's it, it just was such a representation visually of just standing in the corner of the room.
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: I can see them all.
- 18:43SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 18:44SPEAKER_00: Like how many societal things at home in this classroom and the judgment from other students too, okay, let me be normal, let me be bewomed, and we all are just programmed that way.
- 18:55SPEAKER_00: Okay, now we're gonna like go to the office and like work.
- 18:57SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna try to belong in my family unit and my friend group.
- 19:00SPEAKER_00: And people are hungry for permission and a role model.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: I feel like a lot of times I don't even feel like I need to, I don't know, encourage people vocally to like be playful.
- 19:12SPEAKER_00: I feel like they're so hungry for it that I'll just be, I don't know, I'm just gonna be me.
- 19:16SPEAKER_00: And then they'll just yes and it to some level.
- 19:18SPEAKER_01: And they're like, yes.
- 19:20SPEAKER_01: I I I love that you just said that because any workshop event I've ever hosted, and at this point I've hosted a lot.
- 19:27SPEAKER_01: The ones that push the edge that I know are gonna be a little bit uncomfortable for people, especially if I don't know the crowd, I always think, are they gonna be down for this?
- 19:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 19:36SPEAKER_01: Are they gonna withhold?
- 19:38SPEAKER_01: Am I how much, you know, am I gonna have to pull them into this?
- 19:41SPEAKER_01: And every single time there has not been one exception.
- 19:45SPEAKER_01: People have dove into it headfirst and been so playful.
- 19:49SPEAKER_01: And it has, and I say it to whoever's next to me every single time.
- 19:53SPEAKER_01: I'm like, I don't know why this keeps surprising me.
- 19:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but it does because the playful nature, especially for women, is so innate.
- 20:01SPEAKER_01: All we need is that permission.
- 20:03SPEAKER_01: All we need is one little invitation.
- 20:05SPEAKER_00: Yes, and we're a completely different person, completely like an invitation and like a safe space, and like if stuff and to me, a safe space often for many people seems to be a one person in the room is coming up to me, just embodying it.
- 20:17SPEAKER_00: Like they're just the brave first one.
- 20:20SPEAKER_00: And you are that one.
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: Thanks.
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: You are too.
- 20:22SPEAKER_00: We are that one.
- 20:23SPEAKER_01: We are that, but you really are because when I saw you em seeing the joy parade, you came Charlotte to lead.
- 20:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I was really blown away.
- 20:36SPEAKER_01: It is a talent, it's a talent and a skill.
- 20:38SPEAKER_01: It's not something that anyone can just step into and do.
- 20:41SPEAKER_01: Like that pipe of joyful leadership is so special.
- 20:45SPEAKER_00: Oh my god, thank you.
- 20:46SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's literally like my favorite freaking thing to do.
- 20:50SPEAKER_00: I'm just like, thank you, A, for believing in something that I'm like, this is like a new thing that the world hasn't really seen much of yet.
- 20:58SPEAKER_00: Like, I leave this joy parade, like people singing and dancing through the streets, but it's not just singing and dancing, like, I also like to make it like motivational and inspirational, like bring the group together and like you see the mission and you took a chance on me, and I really appreciate that.
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: I love a novel idea.
- 21:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's literally lights me up more than anything to stand there and just uh joy parade and ignite people to that and create a space where they can do something that's probably so wildly out of their comfort zone, and then at the end of it, they say, Oh, I was alive for that last time.
- 21:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 21:32SPEAKER_00: What's your biggest vision that you have for the joy parade or or just in jail?
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, well, for the joy parade, we're shifting.
- 21:40SPEAKER_00: We paused it in the Asheville, um, and we are reconfiguring it to be more like events, conferences.
- 21:47SPEAKER_00: We did um a big one with NAMI, the National Alliance of Mental Health, um, where instead of their 5K, they took a chance and they said, Let's do a joy parade.
- 21:56SPEAKER_00: And it went so well.
- 21:57SPEAKER_00: Wait, when did you do that?
- 21:58SPEAKER_00: It was literally, I think.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: Right after I saw you at Iggy Kira when we did our journey first.
- 22:02SPEAKER_00: They were like literally like back to back, like that's amazing.
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: I know we got back from yours and then we like did the nights on like two days later.
- 22:08SPEAKER_00: And we're like, whoa, we're doing this.
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: It was incredible.
- 22:11SPEAKER_00: It was like 200 people dancing through the streets.
- 22:13SPEAKER_00: It was absolutely epic, so fun.
- 22:17SPEAKER_00: Just, I mean, it was, I don't know.
- 22:19SPEAKER_00: I'm like, so our vision is to expand it to be kind of like that of like, okay, like let's like collaborate to take events to the next level.
- 22:26SPEAKER_00: Like, let's open your event and like when people come back from lunch, I'm like, keep the energy high because that A is like igniting the joy in the people in the rim, but also it's helping your event be better because people are more attentive, they're not falling asleep in their chairs, they're not just like seebly scrolling on their phones and they're having an experience that they walk away with.
- 22:44SPEAKER_00: God, that's like my big vision right now.
- 22:47SPEAKER_00: I mean, I think I'm really feeling called to public speaking right now.
- 22:51SPEAKER_00: Just like that's I don't know if you've ever read the book, The One Thing.
- 22:54SPEAKER_00: I've skimmed it.
- 22:55SPEAKER_00: I haven't I'll be honest, I need to read it.
- 23:00SPEAKER_00: I skimmed it.
- 23:01SPEAKER_00: Um, but it's basically like find your like one thing.
- 23:03SPEAKER_00: And like I'm I'm a big multitasker, I love having, but like that I feel like it really helps me say, oh, like I really want to like get cra hone this craft if I have a microphone in my hand and like getting on stages.
- 23:15SPEAKER_00: So to me, like joy for aid public speaking podcasting.
- 23:18SPEAKER_00: It's all like funneling into this one thing I feel really called to do and um learning what that looks like.
- 23:25SPEAKER_00: And eventually I love to have a team of people to like create some kind of mission that ignites joy and people all over the world, whatever that might be.
- 23:33SPEAKER_00: Of like maybe it's like joy for a teacher training, or maybe it's all different kinds of things.
- 23:37SPEAKER_00: I'm like pretty open to that because I'm like, okay, let's see what the team that assembles around me becomes.
- 23:43SPEAKER_00: Cause I'm a big dream team kind of cookie.
- 23:46SPEAKER_00: I'm not like, I'm gonna just do everything myself forever.
- 23:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I've heard people talk about keeping it lean or like not wanting to have to worry about a team.
- 23:56SPEAKER_01: I'm like, you know how much easier things are when you have not just more hands and brains, right?
- 24:03SPEAKER_01: But also more souls who are passionate about the mission.
- 24:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and the right team, like I think there's something of building something by myself.
- 24:14SPEAKER_00: It's harder to play by yourself.
- 24:16SPEAKER_00: It just is.
- 24:17SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 24:18SPEAKER_00: Like you have one other person, and suddenly it's like, oh, there's like this energy to like pass the goofball back and forth with.
- 24:24SPEAKER_00: You have someone to laugh at this.
- 24:25SPEAKER_00: It's it's I mean, I feel like most of I not that I never laugh by myself.
- 24:28SPEAKER_00: I'm like, oh, I guess I'm like a moment.
- 24:30SPEAKER_00: Like, I definitely do, but it's so much more enjoyable in the journey.
- 24:34SPEAKER_00: And of course, there's like hard moments too, of like, ah, we're disagreeing, and like have to do that.
- 24:39SPEAKER_00: But yeah, I'm curious what your big vision is.
- 24:41unknown: Yeah.
- 24:42SPEAKER_00: So like your eyes to like, yeah.
- 24:44SPEAKER_00: Oh girl, you know, I got one.
- 24:46SPEAKER_01: Like, no, I know you do.
- 24:47SPEAKER_01: Oh, I'm such a visionary.
- 24:49SPEAKER_01: So we really want to expand the fun side club.
- 24:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, as again, I'm obsessed.
- 24:55SPEAKER_01: Bring the in-person experience to as many places as possible, but particularly like female entrepreneur heavy cities.
- 25:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:03SPEAKER_01: So that, you know, there's masterminds, the virtual masterminds everywhere, and there's networking events everywhere.
- 25:08SPEAKER_01: But we're doing something very unique in that we're doing crazy, playful things, but we're doing that between founders, entrepreneurs who are like also serious about what they're building.
- 25:20SPEAKER_01: So we're really merging both, and that really needs to be an in-person experience.
- 25:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:27SPEAKER_01: So it's uh that's that's the vision.
- 25:30SPEAKER_01: Like, I want to have ways for people to get involved all over the world.
- 25:33SPEAKER_01: Yes, but specifically a lot of in-person locations.
- 25:38SPEAKER_00: Oh my god, around America.
- 25:39SPEAKER_00: What you're making is absolute magic.
- 25:41SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's like you're hitting so many needs of people of okay, I'm a visionary, like I have I need support in that kind of sense.
- 25:49SPEAKER_00: Like it's, you know, we all need that.
- 25:51SPEAKER_00: Like, oh, my tribe that's like got my back and can hype me up and can brainstorm with me and like, but also meet me on a human level and connect with me, which I'm sure makes both.
- 26:00SPEAKER_00: I think both probably I imagine really help each other, right?
- 26:03SPEAKER_01: Yes, it's not complete without both.
- 26:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 26:06SPEAKER_01: A lot of people see what we're doing and they think it's just like, you know, we're slip and sliding and we're wearing wigs, and we are doing that.
- 26:13SPEAKER_01: And it's not complete without the other side, where we're talking about our visions, we're talking about our challenges, our plans for our businesses, like we're putting our creative brains together to grow faster in a way that feels so much lighter and easier.
- 26:29SPEAKER_01: So, so yeah, it definitely is both.
- 26:31SPEAKER_01: It all works together, and I want more people to experience that because it doesn't have to be this heavy and hard thing.
- 26:38SPEAKER_01: It can be really fun and fulfilling and light and kind of like easy breezy.
- 26:44SPEAKER_01: I hate to use the word easy because there's always gonna be some level of hard.
- 26:48SPEAKER_01: But when you're in it together and you are having so much fun, and you know, mainly you're not alone.
- 26:55SPEAKER_01: Oh my god, yeah.
- 26:56SPEAKER_01: Like you're good.
- 26:56SPEAKER_01: You're gonna figure it out.
- 26:57SPEAKER_01: You have people who bat your back, you're gonna put your heads together, talk about it, play about it, and then you're good.
- 27:03SPEAKER_01: You got it.
- 27:04SPEAKER_00: No, it's so true.
- 27:05SPEAKER_00: I mean, people ask me sometimes like what my own process is when like things start to go bad.
- 27:10SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, I need to, I mean, sometimes there is like, I just need to like have a good cry.
- 27:14SPEAKER_00: Like, yeah, I'm we're all human, like, I'm not anti that.
- 27:17SPEAKER_00: But a lot of times I'm like, I need to like meet someone in person and they'll get me out of my spiral.
- 27:23SPEAKER_00: Because if I'm sitting alone in a room, it's very easy to let that spiral just yeah, no, and then you're like stuck in imposter syndrome or doubt or whatever flavor, suffering, the hours, brain deal.
- 27:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 27:33SPEAKER_00: And something about just having a friend in the room just snaps you the heck out of it often, very quickly without even any play.
- 27:41SPEAKER_00: And then just having some kind of like playful movement.
- 27:44SPEAKER_00: I'm like, if I'm really stuck, I'm called a friend.
- 27:47SPEAKER_00: Yo, can you like move your body and laugh and play with me?
- 27:50SPEAKER_00: I I'm struggling.
- 27:51SPEAKER_00: It's like magic.
- 27:53SPEAKER_00: Um, it's and it sounds stupid to some people.
- 27:56SPEAKER_00: It sounds too simple.
- 27:57SPEAKER_00: Yes, like I think they think I'm like making it up, like, oh Amy, she's so Pollyanna, like she's just all sunshine and rainbows.
- 28:03SPEAKER_00: I'm like, no, this genuinely is what regulates my nervous system and like is how I have the audacity to keep going.
- 28:09SPEAKER_01: Microp.
- 28:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:12SPEAKER_01: It's such an under undertapped, unlike untapped.
- 28:17SPEAKER_01: It's just such an untapped, like fully untapped lever that we can pull.
- 28:21SPEAKER_01: Like, pull that lever.
- 28:24SPEAKER_00: Go do something fun.
- 28:26SPEAKER_00: I'm thinking back to like childhood now.
- 28:27SPEAKER_00: That's like where it really gets taught out of us, is like you can play after.
- 28:31SPEAKER_00: After your homework's done.
- 28:32SPEAKER_00: After and like, what we're gonna sit in school for like eight hours a day, you come home, you're supposed to do more homework.
- 28:38SPEAKER_00: And then like eventually you can like have a couple scrappy hours of.
- 28:41SPEAKER_01: We're supposed to check every box before you can play.
- 28:44SPEAKER_01: The first thing to go when you're punished because you didn't get a quick grade or you did something wrong is your free time, is your play.
- 28:50SPEAKER_01: Like it is ingrained in us that it's an afterthought that playing fun is an afterthought when really, like, as the wise adults that we are, we can look at the picture and say, actually, this is a really productive, beneficial thing for me to prioritize.
- 29:05SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna put it at the top of the list.
- 29:07SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 29:07SPEAKER_01: But no one's telling you to do that.
- 29:09SPEAKER_01: No one.
- 29:10SPEAKER_01: Except for now.
- 29:11SPEAKER_01: We are totally right now.
- 29:12SPEAKER_01: We are right now.
- 29:14SPEAKER_01: Except for now.
- 29:15SPEAKER_01: Do that, do that exactly.
- 29:17SPEAKER_01: Please do that.
- 29:17SPEAKER_01: Put it at the top of the list and just just experiment with it.
- 29:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 29:21SPEAKER_01: Just do that for a month, prioritize it and just see what happens.
- 29:24SPEAKER_01: So take some notes.
- 29:25SPEAKER_01: Oh, totally.
- 29:26SPEAKER_00: And you're definitely still gonna have the gremlin in your head that's like, oh, I mean to earn play.
- 29:30SPEAKER_00: And like that doesn't go away overnight.
- 29:32SPEAKER_00: No gremlin does.
- 29:33SPEAKER_00: Like, no, it's just okay, like I hear you, and we're trying something new right now.
- 29:38SPEAKER_00: And like, can you try this with me?
- 29:40SPEAKER_00: Yes, can you try this with me?
- 29:42SPEAKER_01: And then, like I said, take notes, genuinely observe, collect some evidence for your brain.
- 29:48SPEAKER_01: Your brain needs it.
- 29:49SPEAKER_01: Going back to the speaking to the logical side of the brain.
- 29:53SPEAKER_01: Look into the science, play by Stuart Brown is a great.
- 29:57SPEAKER_01: Have you read that?
- 29:58SPEAKER_00: Yes, of course.
- 29:59SPEAKER_00: No one else has read it.
- 30:01SPEAKER_00: We're like, let's nerd.
- 30:02SPEAKER_00: Someone was asking me the other day, like, what do you you nerd out about stuff?
- 30:05SPEAKER_00: What do you nerd out about?
- 30:06SPEAKER_00: And I was like, I don't know, like, like strives them to think of it in the moment.
- 30:09SPEAKER_00: I'm like, oh, play.
- 30:10SPEAKER_00: Like, I do nerd out about that.
- 30:12SPEAKER_00: There's so much snurse.
- 30:13SPEAKER_02: So much.
- 30:14SPEAKER_01: It's so good.
- 30:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 30:16SPEAKER_01: So if you're like a a hot you enjoy the facts, you enjoy the logic, geek out about it.
- 30:21SPEAKER_01: And then when you practice it, collect that evidence, reflect.
- 30:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 30:25SPEAKER_01: Okay, how did I feel differently?
- 30:26SPEAKER_01: When did I get inspired this week?
- 30:28SPEAKER_01: What positive things have happened since I've been prioritizing fun and play?
- 30:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 30:32SPEAKER_01: And the the tricky part is that you do have to connect the dots.
- 30:35SPEAKER_01: You do.
- 30:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 30:37SPEAKER_01: You do.
- 30:37SPEAKER_01: I'm prompting the girls in our club frequently, like, what insights are you having after the joy parade?
- 30:43SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 30:43SPEAKER_01: I think that's what we did when we were eating pizza.
- 30:45SPEAKER_01: Like, what'd you guys notice?
- 30:46SPEAKER_01: Okay, where do you apply that to the rest of your life?
- 30:48SPEAKER_01: Like, there's so many dots that you can connect.
- 30:51SPEAKER_01: You just have to pause and do it.
- 30:52SPEAKER_01: But it's worth doing because when it becomes your autopilot, just your natural way of life to choose fun and joy.
- 31:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's a different life.
- 31:02SPEAKER_00: Oh, totally.
- 31:03SPEAKER_00: And it's it's like a skill that you have to develop in your brain.
- 31:06SPEAKER_00: Because I feel like still to this day, I've had moments of like, oh, like, I don't want to choose the fun, joyful, playful thing right now.
- 31:13SPEAKER_00: Like you get in a stress mode sometimes, you're like, I just need to get more done.
- 31:16SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 31:17SPEAKER_00: Like I just have if I just can get this next thing done, then I can play and relax.
- 31:21SPEAKER_00: And like, you know, that like you have to earn.
- 31:23SPEAKER_00: Like, but then I say, Amy, you're stressed out.
- 31:26SPEAKER_00: You've done this so many times.
- 31:28SPEAKER_00: So many reps have been taken.
- 31:30SPEAKER_00: You know that on the other side you will feel better.
- 31:32SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 31:32SPEAKER_00: And you do.
- 31:34SPEAKER_00: It gets easier.
- 31:35SPEAKER_01: It gets so much time, but it gets easier.
- 31:37SPEAKER_01: It really does.
- 31:38SPEAKER_01: And again, there's so many benefits, but all that aside, you enjoying your life is reason enough.
- 31:47SPEAKER_01: It really is.
- 31:48SPEAKER_01: It is.
- 31:48SPEAKER_01: Because I like some people, this conversation, people either love to have it or it's like too much.
- 31:55SPEAKER_01: But I like to dive right into you don't know how long you have.
- 32:00SPEAKER_01: Like this life that you're planning, this joy that you are saying oh, in five years when I get the house, and when I do this, whenever I retire, whatever, like you are not promised that.
- 32:10SPEAKER_00: No, not even a little.
- 32:11SPEAKER_00: And for like people that maybe even do make it to like 80, 90 years old, if you spend your whole life grinding, and then you lose the capability to dance and move your body and like, or you don't have the money to do it anymore, or whatever it might be.
- 32:28SPEAKER_00: Suddenly you're like sitting on your like front porch saying, Oh my God, what happened to my life?
- 32:33SPEAKER_00: Like I just wasted these years away when I could have been connecting with the people I love most and you know, creating my dreams and whatever that might be that sparks you the most alive.
- 32:42SPEAKER_00: And yeah, it's it's wild that people don't that I think we get so dialed in.
- 32:47SPEAKER_00: We get so zoomed in.
- 32:48SPEAKER_00: We forget to zoom out as well.
- 32:50SPEAKER_00: Like, oh my god, the bigger picture of why am I here?
- 32:54SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 32:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 32:55SPEAKER_01: And that's another, if I had to put it in a nutshell, that would make it into the shell of the purpose of choosing fun and joy.
- 33:03SPEAKER_01: It helps you gain perspective really easily.
- 33:05SPEAKER_01: It helps you zoom out and remember the purpose of your life for one.
- 33:10SPEAKER_01: But also if you're if you're a really career-focused person, you get in the weeds of things, you need to zoom out and remember what the bigger picture is because then you can work funner, not harder.
- 33:22SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 33:22SPEAKER_01: And you can see alternate pathways and different ways of doing things that actually leap you over the timeline set you're fixated on with your head down in the hustle and grind.
- 33:30SPEAKER_00: Oh my god, it's so true.
- 33:32SPEAKER_00: You like zoom out, you get tapped into your joyful, playful state, and then sometimes you're like, oh my god.

- 33:51SPEAKER_00: I'm like, yeah, that's why he like came up with like crazy shit no one else had ever thought of because his brain was just like neuroplasticity.

- 34:11SPEAKER_01: If you don't, you're gonna love it.
- 34:13SPEAKER_01: His groundbreaking theory, E equals M C squared.
- 34:17SPEAKER_01: We all know it.
- 34:17SPEAKER_01: We all learned it in science class, came to him first as a musical thought when he was playing the body.
- 34:24SPEAKER_01: Do you love that?
- 34:26SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 34:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 34:27SPEAKER_03: I had no idea.

- 34:42SPEAKER_01: And it's like, I want to say he was ahead of his time, but like more than that, it was kind of like alienistic in a way because people still aren't thinking like that.
- 34:50SPEAKER_01: Oh, totally.
- 34:52SPEAKER_01: He was just so incredibly far outside the box for that time.
- 34:55SPEAKER_01: Really?
