- 0:03Hey, welcome back to Kathie's Coaching Podcast.
- 0:06I'm your host, Kathie Owen.
- 0:08I've been a wellness and performance coach, former personal trainer of over 25 years, and I specialize in pattern recognition.
- 0:19In people, in workplaces, in habits, in the things that quietly keep us stuck.
- 0:25If you've ever felt irritated by New Year's resolutions or wondered why they never seem to work, this video is for you because today we're talking about something most people don't wanna hear, but desperately need to understand.
- 0:44Here it is.
- 0:45If you need a date to change, you're avoiding something.
- 0:49Yeah, I said it.
- 0:52And no, that's not judgment, that's pattern recognition.
- 0:57I've never liked New Year's resolutions, and I didn't even know why for a long time.
- 1:03I just knew they irritated me.
- 1:06Then I spent decades watching the same cycle.
- 1:09Repeat January hits, the gym explodes.
- 1:14Energy is loud, motivation is dramatic, and two weeks later, gone.
- 1:21Not because people are lazy, not because they don't want it badly enough, because nothing actually changed.
- 1:31A date changed, a story changed, but the identity stayed exactly the same.
- 1:40A New Year's resolution usually sounds productive, but psychologically it often means, I don't wanna deal with this right now.
- 1:49I'll become someone else later.
- 1:51Future me will handle it.
- 1:54That's not commitment, that's postponement.
- 1:57Dressed up as hope.
- 1:59If you need January 1st to begin, what you're really doing is creating distance from discomfort.
- 2:08Dates feel safer than decisions.
- 2:12Dates, give people permission to wait.
- 2:15They allow you to say, I'm not failing, I just haven't started yet.
- 2:20This year was bad.
- 2:22Next year will be better.
- 2:24Once the calendar flips, things will change, but your nervous system doesn't know it's January.
- 2:33Your habits don't reset because of a holiday.
- 2:37Your patterns don't dissolve because we all agreed it's a new year.
- 2:43Life doesn't work like that.
- 2:46Another thing that's bothered me, people trashing entire years.
- 2:53We've all heard it this year was awful.
- 2:56I can't wait to leave this year behind.
- 2:59Next year will be better.
- 3:01No, life is not divided into good years and bad years.
- 3:06Life is divided into seasons of learning.
- 3:11Some years stretch you.
- 3:13Some years break illusions.
- 3:14Some years, force boundaries.
- 3:18That doesn't make them bad, that makes them necessary.
- 3:22You don't grow by skipping chapters.
- 3:26So let's say it again.
- 3:28Slowly.
- 3:29If you need a date to change, you're avoiding something.
- 3:34That something might be a hard truth.
- 3:38A boundary, an identity shift, a conversation, accountability, and that doesn't make you weak.
- 3:47It makes you human.
- 3:49But pretending a date will fix it, that keeps people stuck.
- 3:54This is why I end my emails with one simple line, expect excellence.
- 4:01Not perfection.
- 4:03Not intensity, not punishment.
- 4:06Excellence means honesty over hype, consistency over drama, responsibility over excuses.
- 4:17And here's the key.
- 4:19Expect excellence today, not someday, because excellence isn't seasonal, it's behavioral.
- 4:28So instead of I'm going to work out this year, try I'm someone who moves my body.
- 4:35Instead of I'll eat better in January.
- 4:39Try I'll respect my energy.
- 4:42Instead of this year will be different.
- 4:46Try I don't negotiate with patterns that hurt me.
- 4:51That's how real change happens quietly, cleanly, without announcements.
- 4:58If New Year's resolutions have always irritated you, there's probably a reason.
- 5:04You might be wired for: long-term thinking, integrity over urgency, excellence over performance.
- 5:12And that's not a flaw.
- 5:14Dates don't change lives.
- 5:16Decisions do.
- 5:18If this resonated with you, this is the kind of work I do.
- 5:22I break down real world patterns in people, in workplaces and in leadership dynamics.
- 5:28So you can see what's actually happening beneath the surface.
- 5:33I share workplace case studies, behavioral insights, and practical clarity you can use immediately.
- 5:40If you know someone who needs to hear this, please share it with them, and don't worry, there's always another video coming your way.
- 5:48Thanks so much for watching and I'll see you next time.
- 5:51Peace out and namaste.
