- 0:02Speaker 1: Life audio.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Today, I'm talking about that John flies on a private
- 0:09Speaker 2: jet and gets ignored by young people. Meanwhile, I use
- 0:13Speaker 2: two high schoolers as my opening act and invent a
- 0:15Speaker 2: historical new drink, plus a conversation about rage bait and
- 0:19Speaker 2: why politics can never bring his true freedom. Today's episode
- 0:23Speaker 2: is not sponsored by Sally's Seashell Shop. We're right down
- 0:26Speaker 2: by the seashore, which in retrospect was a poor choice
- 0:28Speaker 2: of location. The first a word from my actual sponsor, Johnny.
- 0:41Speaker 1: I think it's time to strap in for a little
- 0:44Speaker 1: journey down the track sta Bentertown.
- 0:49Speaker 2: All aboard the friendship. That would be like a horn,
- 0:55Speaker 2: like a fog horn. Either way, we're here Mansard Town.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Strap in, everybody. I was in the air the other
- 1:07Speaker 2: day and on a plane. Oh and we'd been flying
- 1:13Speaker 2: for an hour, and I was like, I think I
- 1:15Speaker 2: had to go to the back. I normally do not
- 1:16Speaker 2: go to the bathroom on a plane. I'm like, trade
- 1:17Speaker 2: make sure I'm empty. I just don't. I'm not. It's
- 1:20Speaker 2: a very confined. I'm six four, I don't. I don't
- 1:22Speaker 2: like it good. So like we're gonna be empty before
- 1:24Speaker 2: we go on this plane. But it was like a
- 1:25Speaker 2: three three and a half hour flights like I had
- 1:26Speaker 2: to go and then I go to get up and
- 1:28Speaker 2: I go to unbuckle my seat belt and it was
- 1:30Speaker 2: not buckled, Like I had just forgotten son.
- 1:34Speaker 1: The flight attendant really screwed.
- 1:36Speaker 2: If they had if they had done, if anything had
- 1:38Speaker 2: happened during take off.
- 1:39Speaker 1: You've seen those videos where someone was not flying around
- 1:42Speaker 1: where they're not strapped in, they go straight to the ceiling,
- 1:44Speaker 1: like because you're in a metal tube flying in the
- 1:46Speaker 1: middle of the air. Wait, what if you knew that
- 1:49Speaker 1: again that that time I flew in that private like,
- 1:51Speaker 1: I felt so like, wow, we're we're a really small.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Like everything's exaggerated if anything happened aurbulance wise.
- 2:01Speaker 1: And you're like, I'm just up here basically by myself
- 2:03Speaker 1: flying It's almost like I have a jetpack on, but
- 2:05Speaker 1: it's a little bigger than that, so.
- 2:07Speaker 2: More expensive jet I wish I had a John flys
- 2:11Speaker 2: private all the time.
- 2:11Speaker 1: With a jetpack. It's I have flown one time in
- 2:16Speaker 1: a private plane.
- 2:17Speaker 2: It's pretty good experience, it's pretty great, it's pretty unique.
- 2:20Speaker 1: It's pretty great coming home and going out like because
- 2:23Speaker 1: again just landed at the air at the Lebanon Regional Airport.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Oh is that where you went?
- 2:27Speaker 1: Okay, Like when I got there to go, I think
- 2:29Speaker 1: I told the story before, But when I got there,
- 2:31Speaker 1: I just pulled up and strove down the road from
- 2:33Speaker 1: my house and just go.
- 2:35Speaker 2: I literally, you just get in and go. Yeah.
- 2:38Speaker 1: I just pulled up. It just landed, pulled up. I
- 2:40Speaker 1: was like, oh, your car is here. It's like, wait,
- 2:42Speaker 1: it's an airplane. And I got in and uh, we
- 2:45Speaker 1: flew away.
- 2:45Speaker 2: They didn't call it a car a car flying car
- 2:48Speaker 2: to be a little bit disorienting. Your car, your car
- 2:51Speaker 2: right this way? Sorry, Oh we're flying here today.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a pretty experienced flying You're right. The flying private.
- 3:00Speaker 2: The thing of the luxury of it is one thing,
- 3:03Speaker 2: but the main thing is just how quick you're in
- 3:05Speaker 2: the air and how quick you can get back home
- 3:07Speaker 2: and you're not waiting in line, and you're not going
- 3:10Speaker 2: through security and you're not doing all those things, and
- 3:12Speaker 2: that's what makes it. Yeah. I wouldn't sy it makes
- 3:14Speaker 2: worth the money because I've never paid the money to
- 3:16Speaker 2: do it, but I have flown private a few times
- 3:17Speaker 2: in on somebody else's dime.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Pretty good. Yeah, I don't know if I'll ever get
- 3:24Speaker 2: to that level, and that's okay, I've made you won't.
- 3:27Speaker 1: But it's all right, I've already predetermined, Oh that level
- 3:30Speaker 1: of success.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Have you?
- 3:32Speaker 1: There's a chart.
- 3:34Speaker 2: So I had somebody posted a I don't know if
- 3:38Speaker 2: it's a review of the show, but I guess it
- 3:40Speaker 2: kind of is. They posted a Facebook post today. You know,
- 3:42Speaker 2: you get a notification if somebody's mentioned you in their post.
- 3:46Speaker 2: So sometimes I'll go and be like, oh my tag
- 3:48Speaker 2: me interesting be a photo of me with somebody after
- 3:51Speaker 2: the show. This was somebody who evidently took photos of
- 3:54Speaker 2: the show that I was at in Morton, Illinois. Here
- 3:59Speaker 2: it's near Poria, Yah okay, so which when Peoria is
- 4:02Speaker 2: the next major city, you know where you are, you're
- 4:04Speaker 2: and you're out there, you're out there. But it was
- 4:07Speaker 2: at this auditorium performing art center. But it was a
- 4:09Speaker 2: high school auditorium that hosts these events and they would
- 4:12Speaker 2: do like the five play series, buy the whole series,
- 4:16Speaker 2: you know, you buy the whole pack. And I was
- 4:18Speaker 2: one of those things. And so they have a built
- 4:19Speaker 2: in subscriber audience. And so it's pretty packed house, four
- 4:23Speaker 2: hundred people or so, and so most of them did
- 4:26Speaker 2: not know me. There were a few people who were like,
- 4:28Speaker 2: we've seen your videos, but most of them were just
- 4:30Speaker 2: and there were a lot a lot of older they
- 4:33Speaker 2: show yeah because they just like they buy it. They
- 4:35Speaker 2: also bought my Fair Lady and whatever other.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Play my Fair, Johnny, My Fair Johnny.
- 4:39Speaker 2: So this woman was evidently taking photos of the night,
- 4:42Speaker 2: and I didn't know that she was around there doing it.
- 4:43Speaker 2: And I may have met her, but I don't remember her.
- 4:45Speaker 2: But she wrote this is her post and tell me
- 4:48Speaker 2: when anything strikes you. She goes, well, that was certainly different.
- 4:52Speaker 2: I was like, oh boy, oh no, no moving colored
- 4:55Speaker 2: stage lights, no fancy costumes, nothing but an average looking
- 4:59Speaker 2: guy in a strike shirt and a microphone, plus the
- 5:02Speaker 2: occasional use of a guitar. I was like, or we've
- 5:06Speaker 2: started off ouch and then she goes, I've never photographed
- 5:11Speaker 2: a comedian concert before. Air quotes over concert. Uh, if
- 5:15Speaker 2: you ever get a chance, go see Johnny w I
- 5:19Speaker 2: haven't laughed so hard in a long long time. The
- 5:20Speaker 2: guy is just hilarious. You hear a punchline, I think
- 5:22Speaker 2: the story's over until the next and the next punchline.
- 5:25Speaker 2: The laughter was virtually NonStop, so what kind of photos
- 5:28Speaker 2: could I produce of a guy who barely moves on
- 5:31Speaker 2: the stage, faces his faces, the many faces of Johnny
- 5:34Speaker 2: w enjoy and look him up on YouTube or dry
- 5:36Speaker 2: bar comedy. And then she tagged me, so it is
- 5:39Speaker 2: just a bunch of zoom ins on like the faces
- 5:41Speaker 2: I make on stage, because I really don't move a
- 5:42Speaker 2: lot on stage. But she in the beginning, I was like,
- 5:47Speaker 2: I need to block this person. She came around.
- 5:49Speaker 1: You know, out of all the things they could have
- 5:51Speaker 1: said about you, to call you average looking, yeah, I
- 5:53Speaker 1: mean it could have gotten worse.
- 5:55Speaker 2: He was in Yeah, yeah, yeah, I think.
- 6:00Speaker 1: There was some in psychology we would call some of
- 6:03Speaker 1: those mixed strokes.
- 6:04Speaker 2: I can't believe a guy this handsome could also be funny.
- 6:09Speaker 2: It's almost not fair. That's what you hope for, right,
- 6:11Speaker 2: You're like, I just thought he was. It's not when
- 6:14Speaker 2: the prom king is also hilarious.
- 6:16Speaker 1: I thought he was walking a runway for a new
- 6:18Speaker 1: designer and turns out he's funny.
- 6:20Speaker 2: Yeah, that's not what I got. What I got is
- 6:23Speaker 2: I was completely underwhelmed by his appearance and stage presence,
- 6:28Speaker 2: and then he won me over with the jokes, yeah,
- 6:31Speaker 2: which I guess I can live here.
- 6:32Speaker 1: I think that that is sort of my life in
- 6:35Speaker 1: a nutshell, is that what I want to do is
- 6:40Speaker 1: something to win you over from all the other reasons
- 6:42Speaker 1: you probably will not want to hear anything from me.
- 6:45Speaker 1: I want to like in that moment, Yeah, my god,
- 6:48Speaker 1: that guy I was expecting because when you're an old
- 6:52Speaker 1: white bald dad. I can tell you that never before
- 6:59Speaker 1: in my life have I felt more like in the
- 7:02Speaker 1: presence of younger people now, not like the staff and stuff.
- 7:05Speaker 1: If I have a connection but they don't know me,
- 7:07Speaker 1: the assumption is so like, I don't I don't know
- 7:10Speaker 1: what they assume, but I can just tell they don't
- 7:13Speaker 1: care anything that I have to say. Yeah, you know
- 7:15Speaker 1: usually and that's okay.
- 7:17Speaker 2: They're just waiting. There's waiting for you to finish so
- 7:19Speaker 2: they can right, They're like all right, boomer or whatever.
- 7:22Speaker 1: They Yeah, I don't know, I don't know what it
- 7:23Speaker 1: is so like the idea that I could be like yeah,
- 7:25Speaker 1: but then I dropped this this gold and it really
- 7:28Speaker 1: won over the room. That's such a enneagram three part
- 7:31Speaker 1: for me, Like I'm like, yeah.
- 7:32Speaker 2: You know, for an average looking dude, that guy got
- 7:35Speaker 2: a mind on him.
- 7:36Speaker 1: You know, though ugly to look at, and I really
- 7:40Speaker 1: didn't like his church. But you know what, when he
- 7:41Speaker 1: got to speak, a couple of things really spoke to me.
- 7:44Speaker 2: I see now why yeah, yeah, but I.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Want to get that see you got it. I don't
- 7:48Speaker 1: ever get those.
- 7:49Speaker 2: It's an interesting night too, for a lot of reasons.
- 7:51Speaker 2: So we booked it, and then they wanted me to
- 7:53Speaker 2: do like ninety minutes, which is a lot for comedy
- 7:56Speaker 2: one guy talking for night. They go, we'll do an intermission.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Can you do ninety minutes? They never book comedy concert
- 8:00Speaker 2: And I was like, well, honestly, sixty minutes is a
- 8:03Speaker 2: lot to your one guy talk. You do ninety you're
- 8:05Speaker 2: really pushing it. Even with intermission, that's a lot. I know.
- 8:07Speaker 2: You want to get your money's worth. Yeah, I said,
- 8:09Speaker 2: maybe I'll bring an opener. Well, then they booked opener.
- 8:12Speaker 2: They were like, we brought in openers. That's scary, and
- 8:15Speaker 2: I go, okay. They go, we're gonna have two vocalists.
- 8:18Speaker 2: I go, oh boy, okay. So I show up and uh,
- 8:21Speaker 2: not knowing what to expect, and it was two of
- 8:23Speaker 2: their students at the high school who had one like
- 8:26Speaker 2: runner up in a contest for their grade and they
- 8:29Speaker 2: were going to sing like to two tracks each Michael
- 8:33Speaker 2: Boublat songs and Frank Sinatra, and I was like, this
- 8:36Speaker 2: is introdeding. So I met these kids and I was like, okay,
- 8:39Speaker 2: I was so ready for like the not look you
- 8:42Speaker 2: in the eye awkward kids, and they were the most congenial, smart,
- 8:47Speaker 2: sharp kids. Wow. And they were asking questions about my
- 8:51Speaker 2: career and they were telling I would asking about themselves,
- 8:53Speaker 2: and they were just like look them in the eye.
- 8:55Speaker 2: And I was just like, what is good? I go,
- 8:57Speaker 2: you guys are blowing my minds. Well, they were so
- 9:00Speaker 2: nice and they were in the band and they were
- 9:02Speaker 2: in the arts, and they one of them is going
- 9:05Speaker 2: to be a mathematician or like in the engineering. He's
- 9:07Speaker 2: really good at math. And I go, and then plays
- 9:11Speaker 2: the mellow phone in the band and what songs are
- 9:13Speaker 2: you gonna do? And I go, man, you guys chose
- 9:15Speaker 2: them really like big, these are big songs you're gonna do.
- 9:18Speaker 2: And one's a freshman, one's a senior. But the senior
- 9:20Speaker 2: wasn't like hazing the freshman and acting like he was
- 9:23Speaker 2: too cool for school like you would expect. They were
- 9:25Speaker 2: nice to each other. He was nice to the I
- 9:27Speaker 2: was like, this is crazy. Yeah, so I get I
- 9:30Speaker 2: tipped him. I gave him some money for opening and stuff,
- 9:32Speaker 2: which blew. That really shocked him. But they were so nice. So,
- 9:36Speaker 2: Caleb and Trevor, if you're listening, you've restored my faith
- 9:39Speaker 2: in this upcoming generation y.
- 9:40Speaker 1: I often say I wish we would have pushed Sadie
- 9:43Speaker 1: towards the band.
- 9:44Speaker 2: Yeah, she's very musical. I think that is true. I
- 9:46Speaker 2: think that's part of what I was experiencing with them,
- 9:48Speaker 2: is like they've kind of had a lot of their tribe.
- 9:52Speaker 2: They found their tribe, and they're and intellectualism is embraced
- 9:57Speaker 2: in that tribe, and you have your own little silly
- 10:00Speaker 2: inside jokes. But sports has that someone's.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Okay to be awkward in that try. You know what
- 10:04Speaker 1: I'm saying, It's okay to Yeah, no.
- 10:06Speaker 2: No, I was. I was delighted by those two kids,
- 10:09Speaker 2: and then their parents came back and wanted to take
- 10:10Speaker 2: photos of them with me, and uh, they were just
- 10:14Speaker 2: they were so sweet and it was a really it
- 10:16Speaker 2: was a cool experience. So that's I may start doing that.
- 10:18Speaker 2: If I go do some more of these theaters, I
- 10:19Speaker 2: may be like, who can you give me? That's like
- 10:21Speaker 2: a local youth that can just do a song or
- 10:24Speaker 2: something open for me, or somebody wants to do stand up.
- 10:27Speaker 1: Yeah, it was a dangerous game you're playing.
- 10:28Speaker 2: It is a dangerous game. It goes, it doesn't always go.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Well, you're right, you get up and you What you're
- 10:34Speaker 1: basically saying is you found what you feel to be
- 10:36Speaker 1: an anomaly. Now you want to try to replicate that.
- 10:39Speaker 2: Now, Yeah, you're right. Over again, You're right. This is
- 10:42Speaker 2: you're right. I'm playing with fire over here.
- 10:44Speaker 1: Replicated anomalies. That sounds like replic it does. We're a band,
- 10:49Speaker 1: we are.
- 10:50Speaker 2: Give it up for replicated anomalies rock and roll. I
- 10:57Speaker 2: don't know. I don't know either. You know what you
- 10:59Speaker 2: can't replicate? Johnny, Well you can. I guess it happens
- 11:03Speaker 2: all the time the time. But john let's take a
- 11:05Speaker 2: minute and hear from a few of our fine replicated sponsors,
- 11:19Speaker 2: and we're back.
- 11:22Speaker 1: I want to remind you guys always to remember our
- 11:25Speaker 1: friends at NICE Nashville International Center for Empowerment. They're helping
- 11:30Speaker 1: refugees in the area. So you can just google NICE.
- 11:35Speaker 1: I'm not gonna read the whole things normally do. But
- 11:37Speaker 1: Johnny and I both support them. They're an amazing work
- 11:39Speaker 1: and we believe in that. So make sure you're a
- 11:42Speaker 1: part of that. So if you listen to past episodes
- 11:44Speaker 1: or whatever, but if you want to help out in
- 11:46Speaker 1: the Nashville area especially, then you can help out with nice.
- 11:50Speaker 2: Yeah. Man, what a challenging time we're in for folks.
- 11:54Speaker 2: It's like, and I hate that everybody's being lumped in,
- 11:56Speaker 2: even folks that are like trying to do things the
- 11:58Speaker 2: right way or we're promises by this country and now
- 12:01Speaker 2: it feels like we're going back on some of that.
- 12:03Speaker 2: It just feels like so against what, yeah, we're supposed
- 12:07Speaker 2: to be about. Somebody posted that the other day. It
- 12:09Speaker 2: was from John Prine. It was an old John Prime song.
- 12:13Speaker 2: I think it was our friend Caleb Edwards. He posted
- 12:15Speaker 2: a John Prime song lyric and it was like, I
- 12:18Speaker 2: really love America, but I can't seem to find my
- 12:21Speaker 2: way back to her. Yeah, And it's like I feel
- 12:24Speaker 2: like we're in this weird We're in this weird spot
- 12:26Speaker 2: where we're getting We're gonna get to decide in the
- 12:28Speaker 2: next this next few months, we get to decide what
- 12:31Speaker 2: we're going to become you know where, whether we go
- 12:34Speaker 2: further down this path or what we're doing, I don't know.
- 12:38Speaker 2: It's an interesting it's a very interesting time, and I
- 12:40Speaker 2: know a lot of people have a lot of anxiety
- 12:41Speaker 2: over it, no matter what side you're on.
- 12:44Speaker 1: Yeah, and the fact that there are so many sides
- 12:47Speaker 1: I think is part of the problem. In fact, that
- 12:48Speaker 1: kind of leads into my quote for the day.
- 12:50Speaker 2: Okay, well you want to go and do it.
- 12:51Speaker 1: And we'll continue. We'll pick up this conversation to the
- 12:53Speaker 1: context of this quote. It's my sevenment we call they
- 12:56Speaker 1: talked about that, mm hm.
- 13:10Speaker 2: Close enough.
- 13:12Speaker 1: Thomas Merton love Thomas Martin, the old mert ol Merty said.
- 13:21Speaker 1: This is from a book from nineteen eighty five. Actually,
- 13:23Speaker 1: he said, hope of attaining true freedom by purely political
- 13:27Speaker 1: means has become an insane delusion. M hm. Hope of
- 13:31Speaker 1: attaining true freedom by purely political means has become an
- 13:35Speaker 1: insane delusion. So you know, Thomas Merton is a monk,
- 13:39Speaker 1: right yeah. At the he's at a monastery up at
- 13:42Speaker 1: near Louisville.
- 13:43Speaker 2: The Merten Monk Monastery, the Merton Monastery.
- 13:48Speaker 1: You know, it's interesting because I think just the word
- 13:53Speaker 1: political is so divisive, and I think that it's what's
- 13:58Speaker 1: really hard about life is we've never been so navel
- 14:04Speaker 1: gazing as now, like looking at our own emotions. We
- 14:07Speaker 1: talk about it all the time, like the therapy talk,
- 14:09Speaker 1: the self reflection, the self improvement. But I think what
- 14:16Speaker 1: we're missing and all that is the ability to objectively
- 14:24Speaker 1: look at where we are on say a political spectrum
- 14:29Speaker 1: or a sociological spectrum, and find, you know, whether or
- 14:34Speaker 1: not we're moving in our inter right direction. Because there's
- 14:38Speaker 1: like this assumption with all the therapy kind of talk we
- 14:40Speaker 1: have is that wherever we're starting from, it's the right
- 14:44Speaker 1: place right, it's it's the zeroline right.
- 14:48Speaker 2: And so.
- 14:50Speaker 1: I forget where I read this the other day. It
- 14:52Speaker 1: was talking about like, you know, only those who can
- 14:54Speaker 1: really honestly evaluate themselves with the help of others, can
- 15:00Speaker 1: look at that painful truth. That's the only way to
- 15:03Speaker 1: truly grow into an integrative type of existence. And I
- 15:08Speaker 1: think what we're missing today is is like the political
- 15:11Speaker 1: world lacks it lacks uncertainty. And when you're certain about
- 15:20Speaker 1: really complex, nuanced things and you have a pure certain viewpoint,
- 15:28Speaker 1: that has no room for anybody else's viewpoint. That's politics today.
- 15:34Speaker 1: But by that definition it is anti politics because the
- 15:38Speaker 1: definition of politics is supposed to be multiple sides of
- 15:42Speaker 1: a spectrum working together. As you guys know, I got
- 15:47Speaker 1: to write for mister Jim Haslam, who's ninety five now,
- 15:52Speaker 1: who founded Pilot Corporation, and his son was Governor Bill
- 15:57Speaker 1: Haslam is a two term governor of Tennessee and Governor
- 16:00Speaker 1: Hasn't wrote a book. It's right here on myself. It's
- 16:03Speaker 1: called Faithful Presence. He wrote with Thomas Nelson and he
- 16:07Speaker 1: talks in there, gives a story about he went on
- 16:11Speaker 1: it was a right wing news network as the governor
- 16:14Speaker 1: they had just passed some legislation. Yeah, and they were
- 16:18Speaker 1: like asking him, so, how did you finally beat the
- 16:22Speaker 1: Libs and whatever? And if you've ever met Governor Haslam,
- 16:26Speaker 1: that's what the whole book is about. He's a guy
- 16:29Speaker 1: that wants to followed Jesus and he believes that there
- 16:31Speaker 1: is a way to be a Christian as you serve
- 16:34Speaker 1: a common good in the public square. That's what that
- 16:36Speaker 1: book's about, how to be a believer in the public square.
- 16:39Speaker 1: And he was like, actually, no, I didn't beat anybody.
- 16:43Speaker 1: We came together in the table and bro our sides. Yeah,
- 16:46Speaker 1: but and they kept going at him, trying to get
- 16:49Speaker 1: that sort of bait, and he said, actually, we all compromised,
- 16:53Speaker 1: gave something, lost something so that we could all win something.
- 16:57Speaker 1: And that's kind of how the process is supposed to work.
- 16:59Speaker 1: And the interview because they couldn't get this is not helpful,
- 17:04Speaker 1: like they just think where we're going to go now,
- 17:06Speaker 1: to bob over and whatever. And it's so telling that
- 17:10Speaker 1: we're addicted to the rage because we really believe we
- 17:13Speaker 1: can have some sort of freedom by purely political means,
- 17:16Speaker 1: and we don't know that's the thing. We can't look
- 17:18Speaker 1: at ourselves enough to know it, because we've been told
- 17:22Speaker 1: that if anybody disagrees, then they're the enemy. We're literally
- 17:26Speaker 1: using words today in from like public offices like vermin.
- 17:33Speaker 1: And they're not just we're describing immigrants. Certainly invaders were invaders.
- 17:39Speaker 1: We're using words like I'm quoting, I can go find
- 17:42Speaker 1: these I'm not making out. This is not some garbage
- 17:49Speaker 1: words like garbage, words like scum, words like animal. These
- 17:55Speaker 1: are all dehumanizing terms and the only way someone would
- 18:00Speaker 1: entertain them is if you have to believe on a
- 18:05Speaker 1: high level that they're true. Otherwise, if you're dealing with
- 18:11Speaker 1: humans and I'm just I can only speak to those
- 18:13Speaker 1: who claim to follow Christ. If you're talking about other humans,
- 18:17Speaker 1: then you have to deny the ways of Christ in
- 18:19Speaker 1: order to use those those terms. So the only way
- 18:22Speaker 1: it works is you have to believe it. You have
- 18:24Speaker 1: to be a true believer.
- 18:25Speaker 2: It has to be your new religion. It has to
- 18:27Speaker 2: be higher than it's a new belief system. Yeah, that
- 18:30Speaker 2: says this is the way forward politics will since we'll
- 18:32Speaker 2: find this are of true freedom.
- 18:34Speaker 1: Like you said, right, and if it has no tension
- 18:36Speaker 1: with your faith, yeah, then I just would stop and
- 18:39Speaker 1: say again, I have zero judgment. And that's the thing.
- 18:42Speaker 1: This could be triggering for so many people hearing the
- 18:44Speaker 1: words because we have been conditioned to be triggered. Now
- 18:48Speaker 1: we've been conditioned to that everything on your phone makes
- 18:51Speaker 1: more money when you're upset. That's just guys, that's straight
- 18:54Speaker 1: up in the data getting you upset, just more money
- 18:59Speaker 1: for the people.
- 19:00Speaker 2: Even in the old days of like radio, like I
- 19:01Speaker 2: remember watching Howard Stern did him book called Private Parts
- 19:07Speaker 2: about his stories, like his biography, and then he did
- 19:09Speaker 2: a movie about it. And it was basically just stories
- 19:12Speaker 2: from him being like on terrestrial radio before he went
- 19:15Speaker 2: to serious, but like when he was in Testrail he
- 19:16Speaker 2: was the number one show and he was so shy.
- 19:19Speaker 2: He was the original shock jock. He was so offensive
- 19:21Speaker 2: and whatever. And they were doing the data and they
- 19:24Speaker 2: said it really laid the groundwork for what social media
- 19:27Speaker 2: is now and what you know, Fox News, INSBC all
- 19:29Speaker 2: of it. And they said, we've done the data and
- 19:34Speaker 2: his drivetime show. The people that love him listen for
- 19:39Speaker 2: an hour and they go, okay, and they go the
- 19:41Speaker 2: people that hate him listen for three hours. Wow, that
- 19:45Speaker 2: was the real data. Yeah, so they just rage listen
- 19:48Speaker 2: to this guy so they could have more detail for
- 19:51Speaker 2: their angry letters to the station or whatever. And now
- 19:54Speaker 2: that's evolved into what we have now. He already saw it.
- 19:57Speaker 2: I mean this was thirty years ago. Forty years ago. Yeah,
- 20:00Speaker 2: it's crazy.
- 20:01Speaker 1: Well, I think we got to always that's fascinating and
- 20:03Speaker 1: I think we have to always realize that. And I
- 20:06Speaker 1: tell the church all the time, if you let's just
- 20:10Speaker 1: simplify it down to a couple phrases, if you just
- 20:14Speaker 1: really live your life trying to do justly, trying to
- 20:17Speaker 1: love mercy, not just tolerate mercy, but loving the idea
- 20:21Speaker 1: that people get mercy, and walking humbly with God. Which
- 20:26Speaker 1: other ways to say this would be you disadvantage yourself
- 20:31Speaker 1: to the advantage of somebody else, and you leave your
- 20:34Speaker 1: well being to God's providence, sovereignty care for you. You give
- 20:39Speaker 1: something up so others can have because you trust that
- 20:42Speaker 1: God is your provision. Then just living that kind of life,
- 20:47Speaker 1: trying to do that every day will take all the
- 20:50Speaker 1: energy you have in all the best ways. You will
- 20:53Speaker 1: use your life up. You will waste your life in
- 20:55Speaker 1: the best of ways. You might not have fame, you
- 20:58Speaker 1: might not have fortune. You probably won't. You will gain
- 21:01Speaker 1: something much better. You'll gain real life, eternal life. And
- 21:05Speaker 1: I don't mean the future eternity. I mean you'll live
- 21:07Speaker 1: in eternity in the present. Which is one of the
- 21:10Speaker 1: prayers from the Book of Common Prayer is that strengthen
- 21:14Speaker 1: us in all goodness and by the power of the
- 21:16Speaker 1: Holy Spirit, keep us in eternal life today, like keep
- 21:19Speaker 1: me in eternal life today. But to hate or to
- 21:24Speaker 1: even go down the rabbit hole of information beyond what
- 21:29Speaker 1: is just good civic, educational. I think we all need
- 21:33Speaker 1: to have a civic education. We all need to kind
- 21:34Speaker 1: of know what's going on somewhat, but to go down
- 21:37Speaker 1: the rabbit hole of obsession, which is the way all
- 21:39Speaker 1: the media is. And I'm not anti media, I'm just
- 21:43Speaker 1: pro responsibility to understand what the media is. Yeah, you
- 21:47Speaker 1: should look at guys, if you have never looked at
- 21:50Speaker 1: ad Fontes media bias chart, it's a great thing. It'll
- 21:54Speaker 1: tell you what you're listening to, where there is in
- 21:56Speaker 1: the left, right, or middle. And if you don't, if
- 21:57Speaker 1: you want to listen to the right or the left,
- 21:59Speaker 1: great also go listen to the middle on the other
- 22:01Speaker 1: side and get a balanced viewpoint on it. So the
- 22:04Speaker 1: media itself doesn't have to be bad. It's only bad
- 22:06Speaker 1: if you can't balance or understand its nature of what
- 22:08Speaker 1: it's doing to you, because it's no longer meant to
- 22:11Speaker 1: be just purely informational.
- 22:13Speaker 2: No, we have a more miserable and enraged population than ever,
- 22:18Speaker 2: and it's because we have little propaganda machines in our pockets. Yeah,
- 22:22Speaker 2: that are feeding us things, yeah, and then occasionally selling
- 22:26Speaker 2: us popcorn too, whatever else we want.
- 22:29Speaker 1: Yeah. That is spiking your dopamine every time. It's spiking
- 22:31Speaker 1: your Cortisol when you get stressed. I mean like it's
- 22:34Speaker 1: literally we're writing a roller coaster of political rage. And
- 22:40Speaker 1: I think back to Martin, there is no hope of
- 22:43Speaker 1: attaining any true freedom through this. There has to be
- 22:46Speaker 1: and I've had this conversation just by today. It is offensive,
- 22:50Speaker 1: but it must be the case. Like our allegiance to Christ,
- 22:55Speaker 1: there must not be a second, a close second to that.
- 22:58Speaker 1: It's the first commandment, right, have no other gods. You
- 23:01Speaker 1: can have other interests, you can have other things that
- 23:03Speaker 1: you're even responsible for or that you have some allegiance too,
- 23:09Speaker 1: but they shouldn't be anywhere on the level of your
- 23:10Speaker 1: one God. The rest should pale in comparison, because, as
- 23:14Speaker 1: the Psalms say, you alone make me dwell in safety.
- 23:17Speaker 1: It's offensive you alone. There's nothing else. There's not gonna
- 23:20Speaker 1: be money, there's not gonna be a political figure, there's
- 23:22Speaker 1: not gonna be a policy, all the things. So if
- 23:24Speaker 1: I'm gonna engage in the civic processes, I should as
- 23:27Speaker 1: a believer. It's got to be it's got to be
- 23:30Speaker 1: almost like yeah, again, it's civic responsibility, not spiritual allegiance.
- 23:36Speaker 1: There has to be a difference between that so because
- 23:37Speaker 1: hope of it taking true freedom about purely, purely political
- 23:40Speaker 1: means is an insane delusion. That's what Merton said. I'm
- 23:45Speaker 1: agreeing with him, guys. That's my secment for today.
- 23:50Speaker 2: The Mertenn Monastery. John, let's do some old jokes today.
- 23:55Speaker 2: We call it joke about that John tough time. I
- 24:02Speaker 2: don't know if I told you this, but I got
- 24:04Speaker 2: home the other day. I had been robbed, someone had
- 24:07Speaker 2: stolen my limbo stick. I mean, how low can you go?
- 24:14Speaker 1: I like that?
- 24:15Speaker 2: That's John. A pastor announced, if you know your wife
- 24:20Speaker 2: is controlling you, moved to the left. All the men
- 24:23Speaker 2: in the church moved to the left except one man.
- 24:24Speaker 2: The pastor was happy there was at least one strong
- 24:26Speaker 2: man and asked, how come your wife can't control you.
- 24:29Speaker 2: The man quietly replied, my wife told me not to
- 24:31Speaker 2: move John. While Irene is calm, I'm thinking of this
- 24:39Speaker 2: person a name I like it. While Irene is calmly
- 24:41Speaker 2: cooking at home, the phone suddenly ranks, ma'am, please come
- 24:44Speaker 2: to the hospital right away. Your husband was run over
- 24:46Speaker 2: by a steamroller. She rushed to the hospital in the
- 24:48Speaker 2: panic and asked the front desk, please, where's my husband.
- 24:51Speaker 2: He was run over a steamroller. Oh yes, rooms fifteen, sixteen,
- 24:54Speaker 2: and seventeen.
- 24:56Speaker 1: That's dark.
- 24:57Speaker 2: That's Darry. It is dark, tough. Our heart goes out
- 24:59Speaker 2: to all those who were run over by steamrollers in
- 25:01Speaker 2: the audience today. If you're still with us, right, John,
- 25:08Speaker 2: let's do this week in history. We call it talk
- 25:11Speaker 2: about Then, John This Week. Nineteen fifty two, the Today
- 25:20Speaker 2: Show debuted on NBS. It's a long running show, the
- 25:24Speaker 2: first early morning show. Dave Garaway was Today's first host,
- 25:28Speaker 2: hosting until nineteen sixty one. Still running, it is now
- 25:31Speaker 2: the fifth longest running US television series. In nineteen fifty three,
- 25:35Speaker 2: to boost sagging ratings, the chimpanzee Jfred Muggs was added
- 25:39Speaker 2: to the cast. Yeah, this was the thing they did
- 25:42Speaker 2: a lot in shows in the fifties and sixties. It
- 25:44Speaker 2: was like, we need to get a little kid, who's
- 25:45Speaker 2: the cute hit. We gotta get a chimp on this show.
- 25:48Speaker 2: We gotta do some stuff. He was an instant hit,
- 25:51Speaker 2: and it's estimated that Muggs earned the network over one
- 25:54Speaker 2: hundred million in advertising and merchandising. You know what, they
- 25:57Speaker 2: gave him a couple of bananas. Jay mugs got a
- 26:01Speaker 2: hundred million dollars. This is one hundred million dollars in
- 26:04Speaker 2: the fifties. You know what, which one of us is
- 26:07Speaker 2: the chimp making all the money? That's what I was
- 26:08Speaker 2: going to say. We need us a J Edward Muggs. Yeah,
- 26:11Speaker 2: j Fred Muggs. Sorry, I don't mean to smirch about
- 26:14Speaker 2: J Fred and Jay Edgar Muggs.
- 26:19Speaker 1: Yeah, there's too many things here to say.
- 26:22Speaker 2: Sesh. Yeah, anyway, j Fred Muggs, he's probably not with
- 26:26Speaker 2: us anymore, but I want to know what he would.
- 26:28Speaker 1: Don't you miss the old days of using your first initial.
- 26:32Speaker 2: And name any more of that? Yeah, that sounds very prestigent.
- 26:35Speaker 1: You know this, This is a quote from from J
- 26:37Speaker 1: Carl Driver that actually, doesn't that sound pretty?
- 26:40Speaker 2: That's not too bad, doctor Jay. I guess sounds like
- 26:43Speaker 2: he's of he's got average looks.
- 26:45Speaker 1: Yeah, but but and probably average content too.
- 26:49Speaker 2: Wait, but he's three names. That was one of my
- 26:53Speaker 2: favorite jokes ever that I heard a couple of years ago,
- 26:55Speaker 2: which was that guy was talking about serial killers. He goes,
- 26:58Speaker 2: you know why these serial killers all have three names?
- 27:00Speaker 2: So that was announced the name John Wayne Gacy and
- 27:01Speaker 2: he gave like four or five examples, and he goes
- 27:03Speaker 2: because they're in big, big trouble. It's so funny. That's
- 27:09Speaker 2: a good thing. John, Wayne Gacy, you get down here
- 27:11Speaker 2: right now. What have you done? John? This week? Will
- 27:15Speaker 2: Booth so help me this week? John Sterling Holloway was
- 27:20Speaker 2: born in nineteen o five, Sling Sure. He was an
- 27:24Speaker 2: American actor. He was the voice of some of your
- 27:28Speaker 2: favorite characters, most beloved characters, Winnie the Pooh, Okay, he
- 27:31Speaker 2: was the voice of the snake in Jungle Book Wow,
- 27:34Speaker 2: and the cheshire Cat in Disney's Alice in Wonderland. I
- 27:36Speaker 2: didn't know he did all those things.
- 27:37Speaker 1: Yeah, I was. I was a big Winning the poof fan.
- 27:41Speaker 2: Oh.
- 27:41Speaker 1: Yeah he had that. Ye had that very Yeah. I
- 27:45Speaker 1: had two stuffed animals. One was a Winning the Pooh,
- 27:47Speaker 1: of course, and the other was a Snoopy. And I
- 27:50Speaker 1: still had the Snoopy at home my mom. Yeah I
- 27:52Speaker 1: found Did you pass it down to Sadie? Yeah, yeah,
- 27:55Speaker 1: it's it's with the rest of her stuff old. Most
- 27:58Speaker 1: of her stuffed animals are gone now, but we've kept
- 28:00Speaker 1: well she's seventeen, I know, but she has a girls
- 28:03Speaker 1: kid animals. Yes, but you understand we have bins of stuff. Oh, sure,
- 28:06Speaker 1: she can make whole Disney parades out of stuffed animals
- 28:09Speaker 1: and did so.
- 28:11Speaker 2: Oh the Old Disney Parade. None of those were Disney characters,
- 28:13Speaker 2: but okay, Peanuts was. It was Swinny the pood Disney.
- 28:17Speaker 2: I don't think so. I don't think so.
- 28:18Speaker 1: I don't think she used well, yeah, Snoopy, and I
- 28:21Speaker 1: don't know if he was in the.
- 28:22Speaker 2: Pre You're just lumping them with all cartoons or Disney
- 28:24Speaker 2: now saying this is like Google search engine happens, uh
- 28:27Speaker 2: huh Google that all tissues are clean ext Where I
- 28:30Speaker 2: meant bing, I meant ask Jeeves. John Benedict Donoald was
- 28:35Speaker 2: born this week seventeen forty one. He was an American
- 28:38Speaker 2: general comma trade horror. He attempted to betray you would
- 28:43Speaker 2: you would hate to have that kind of legacy that
- 28:45Speaker 2: like they can just put a comma in like your
- 28:47Speaker 2: your bio was like he was this guy trader he attempted.
- 28:52Speaker 2: He's literally, what's not like when you think of somebody,
- 28:54Speaker 2: you call somebody an Benedict Donald if you mean trader.
- 28:57Speaker 2: He attempted to betray West Point to the British during
- 28:59Speaker 2: the American of a. Before this, he was considered an
- 29:01Speaker 2: American hero of the Revolution. Arnold helped capture the British
- 29:04Speaker 2: garrison of Fort taekwonder Roga hindered by hindered the British
- 29:09Speaker 2: invasion of New York at the Battle of Lake Champlain,
- 29:13Speaker 2: and played a c crucial role in the surrender of
- 29:15Speaker 2: the British General John Berg joins army at Saratoga. However,
- 29:21Speaker 2: he began spying for the British and plotted to surrender
- 29:24Speaker 2: West Point. When his plot was exposed, he began fighting
- 29:27Speaker 2: for the British. I used to have an idea for
- 29:31Speaker 2: a drink and it was one third t one third lemonade,
- 29:37Speaker 2: and one third betrayal, and it was a Benedict Arnold Palmer.
- 29:42Speaker 1: Never really So there is a new documentary from ken
- 29:46Speaker 1: Burns about the the Benedict Arnold stuff is fascinating because
- 29:52Speaker 1: he really was. It's hard to explain, like he wasn't
- 29:55Speaker 1: quite George Washington level fame, but he was probably the next.
- 29:59Speaker 2: So it fell big when he was exposed. He was a.
- 30:02Speaker 1: Big, big deal and he was a hero. But also
- 30:05Speaker 1: you don't realize quite the horrible conditions that the Revolutionary
- 30:10Speaker 1: soldiers went through. Also, the idea of trader is so
- 30:12Speaker 1: interested to me because like, as a loyalist, I look
- 30:16Speaker 1: back and it would have been hard for me to be, like,
- 30:19Speaker 1: we're going against the British Crown.
- 30:20Speaker 2: You're you're British, you're being a trader. To start doing
- 30:23Speaker 2: what you're.
- 30:23Speaker 1: Doing, revolutionary things have to betray something, and so it's like,
- 30:29Speaker 1: you know, Benjamin Franklin's on son was a loyalist to
- 30:34Speaker 1: the British crown, so like it really was a civil
- 30:36Speaker 1: war as much as it was a revolution for them.
- 30:39Speaker 2: So anyway, scientild just to have a bit about that,
- 30:41Speaker 2: about people who are cheaters in their relationships and then
- 30:43Speaker 2: some people cheat on the people that they were cheating with.
- 30:46Speaker 2: He goes, it's like you're robbing a bank and then
- 30:48Speaker 2: you turn to the guy next you go, now give
- 30:49Speaker 2: me everything you have that you were robbing the bank with. Yeah,
- 30:54Speaker 2: bennedic Donald. Anyway, John, the first super Bowl this week
- 31:00Speaker 2: nineteen sixty seven. What do you know about the first
- 31:02Speaker 2: Super Bowl? I did not know some of this stuff.
- 31:04Speaker 2: It kind of blew my mind. I know nothing. Do
- 31:06Speaker 2: you remember the teams? No? What could just guess colts? No?
- 31:10Speaker 1: Okay, Packers.
- 31:12Speaker 2: Okay, they beat the AFL's Kansas City Chiefs thirty five
- 31:16Speaker 2: to ten in Los Angeles. The first AFL NFL World
- 31:20Speaker 2: Championship game was actually called the Super Bowl until later,
- 31:23Speaker 2: so it was almost like World War One.
- 31:25Speaker 1: Yeah, you didn't call it World War One Bowl.
- 31:27Speaker 2: You just said, I don't know what you said. You
- 31:28Speaker 2: said the NFL World Champion.
- 31:30Speaker 1: It'd be really dark to call the Warrior in World
- 31:34Speaker 1: War One.
- 31:34Speaker 2: Yeah right. It remains the only Super Bowl simulcast by
- 31:38Speaker 2: two television networks. NBC had the rights to nationally televise
- 31:41Speaker 2: AFL games, and CBS had the rights to broadcast NFL games,
- 31:44Speaker 2: so both networks were allowed to televise the game. This
- 31:46Speaker 2: is the part why it makes the list. Both CBS
- 31:48Speaker 2: and NBC erased the tapes of the game to save costs,
- 31:52Speaker 2: a common practice at the time. In twenty eleven, a
- 31:55Speaker 2: tape of the first half and most of the second
- 31:58Speaker 2: half was found in twenty sixteen after exhaustive searching of
- 32:01Speaker 2: their archives. The NFL had located individual recordings of each
- 32:04Speaker 2: play and stitch them together to form a complete game.
- 32:07Speaker 2: So we just lost this to history until very recently,
- 32:10Speaker 2: and it's kind of hodgepodge together by other angles and
- 32:13Speaker 2: tapes to even get a full game unbelievable. And now
- 32:16Speaker 2: the Super Bowl is like the biggest thing in the world.
- 32:18Speaker 2: Even people that don't watch football watch the super Bowl. Yeah,
- 32:21Speaker 2: but back they were like, erase it. It's not as
- 32:24Speaker 2: product gonna take Wow, John. Finally, this week is why
- 32:28Speaker 2: I horde things. By the way, honey, if you're listening,
- 32:30Speaker 2: it's it's like every man has a box of cables
- 32:33Speaker 2: because you're like, what if they bring back the red, white,
- 32:35Speaker 2: yellow cable?
- 32:36Speaker 1: That's my super Bowl one? It is, you know what
- 32:38Speaker 1: I'm saying. Who knows if you might need it someday.
- 32:41Speaker 2: Okay, don't get rid of that cable, my friend. That's right.
- 32:44Speaker 2: I've done it, and you regret it immediately. You will
- 32:46Speaker 2: find a use for that cable or that adapter, that dongle,
- 32:49Speaker 2: whatever it is. John. This Week nineteen ninety two, uh
- 32:54Speaker 2: US Vice President Dan Quayle stated, George Bush will lead
- 32:59Speaker 2: us out of this recovery get away with words that
- 33:05Speaker 2: man did. He was probably above average looking.
- 33:08Speaker 1: That would not even make the feed today. No, yeah, yeah,
- 33:14Speaker 1: that's like today.
- 33:15Speaker 2: No, it's like crazy.
- 33:16Speaker 1: We could put the president a fighter jet dropping poop
- 33:19Speaker 1: on people tweeted by the White House, and that doesn't
- 33:23Speaker 1: it barely makes.
- 33:24Speaker 2: Yeah, It's like it's like eight hours of the news
- 33:26Speaker 2: cycle and then we move on to the next thing.
- 33:28Speaker 1: Dang well, I mean today he might be a king,
- 33:30Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying if this was his time.

- 33:55Speaker 2: p right, give me, give me started. Yeah, anyway, dan Quayle,
- 34:03Speaker 2: that's interesting. That was an interesting election too because that
- 34:06Speaker 2: was where the recession had a hit because he was
- 34:09Speaker 2: coming off the First Gulf War, which was one hundred
- 34:11Speaker 2: days yea, the decisive victory, and then it was like
- 34:14Speaker 2: he had a ninety percent approval rating and then we
- 34:18Speaker 2: hit a economic recession and then he lost to Clinton,
- 34:22Speaker 2: and so that this was dan Quayle trying to do
- 34:24Speaker 2: some like damage control and somehow botched it.
- 34:28Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's yeah. That was a real high
- 34:32Speaker 1: on brad moment. If you listen to the past episodes
