- 0:00Oh, God. Oh, my God.
- 0:12Yes. Hey, Nick, we kind of like matching or like similar themed shirts today.
- 0:15You know, we're space dudes. Right.
- 0:17This is planned. No, no.
- 0:20Well, if it were planned, I would have.
- 0:22No, I probably wouldn't have done it anyway.
- 0:23I don't know. You showed up with a turtleneck that one time.
- 0:25That's true. I did do that. Yeah.
- 0:27It was a inadvertent turtleneck party.
- 0:29Oh, wow. I don't think it was inadvertent.
- 0:31No, it was vertant. You're right.
- 0:33Yeah. It was just at Sean's expense.
- 0:35Yeah. I don't really see how it's at my expense.
- 0:37I like turtlenecks.
- 0:38In fact, I went pulling on after you guys got here. That's true.
- 0:41It was a slow burn, though.
- 0:43Yeah. Everyone just sort of slowly showed up with turtlenecks
- 0:46to this cocktail party that Sean was throwing.
- 0:48And then when Nick showed up, I'm like, you did this.
- 0:53Fantastic.
- 0:54Weird prank. Turtlenecks and chains.
- 0:56Good. Yeah. Good. So, yeah, we don't probably have to do too much.
- 1:02You know, getting to know you stuff.
- 1:04I say whatever the fuck I want to say.
- 1:07Fantastic. That's my brand.
- 1:09Fine. Yeah. Great. But stuff.
- 1:11Yeah. But stuff only.
- 1:13This is actually just my agenda for the night.
- 1:15It's just only here for the butt stuff today.
- 1:19I mean, we're going to talk. Try not to disappoint.
- 1:22Oh, yeah. I mean, I don't know how much butt stuff was going on in there,
- 1:24but definitely that one guy was definitely murdered by but stuff.
- 1:27It was definitely. Yeah, there was murder by that stuff.
- 1:30Yes, that's true. That's true.
- 1:32A butt got real fucked.
- 1:34They got stuffed.
- 1:36It was butt stuffed.
- 1:37Ah, I just don't want to talk about mom and dad.
- 1:43I was do we just roll into it?
- 1:45Generally speaking, we trip ourselves over things until we suddenly get started.
- 1:51Oh, I usually usually by Sean making a good attempt at a segue.
- 1:56I don't know what you're talking about.
- 1:59I'm glad you admit it. Yeah.
- 2:03I want to do it now. Good.
- 2:05Yeah, good. Then we are going to start. Good. Thanks.
- 2:11Welcome back to Cajamatch,
- 2:12going around about Nicholas Cage.
- 2:15I'm your host, Sean, here with my cohost.
- 2:17I'm Nick and our producer, Peter. Hello.
- 2:20And special guest this week.
- 2:22Why don't you go ahead and introduce yourself and tell the people what it is you do?
- 2:26My name is Brian Kim McCormick, and I'm an actor
- 2:31and produce all the things that you do in entertainment.
- 2:36So I've written, I've directed, I've edited, I've raised money.
- 2:42So jack of all trades, I guess, or starving artists.
- 2:46No, I'm not starving.
- 2:47So I'll just I'll just stick with artists.
- 2:49So I managed to get that far. So.
- 2:52Were you starving at one point?
- 2:55No, no, I've been pretty blessed, actually.
- 2:59I went to school to be a doctor or criminal profiler for the CIA
- 3:05and then pivoted into musical theater
- 3:08because that's what you do.
- 3:11And very actually, they were they just, you know, well, actually,
- 3:16you know, now they're very in their old age.
- 3:18All they care about is like, oh, we get to see you in things or this.
- 3:21You know, they're very popular in their retirement community
- 3:25because they can brag about me.
- 3:27So I'm glad I could bring that to them.
- 3:28But no, I I was a major hustler in my 20s.
- 3:32And so I was acting at night and then overnight working in like a hospital.
- 3:39And then I was also a semi pro gambler for a large period of time.
- 3:45We've had a weird amount of those on the show.
- 3:47Two is a weird amount. Yeah. Yeah.
- 3:50When talking about Nicholas Cage.
- 3:52You got to meet our Atlantic City boys. Yeah.
- 3:53Oh, hey, when my 10 years in New York,
- 3:56I spent a fair amount of time in Atlantic City.
- 3:59I love AC. You might know them already.
- 4:01What was your game of choice?
- 4:04I am a Texas Holden player.
- 4:06OK, no one ever says back around.
- 4:09I'm not, but I'd be willing to learn.
- 4:12You know, it's just it.
- 4:13A lot of these games cost a lot of money to to learn.
- 4:16So I paid my dues, I think, in poker with learning and losing money.
- 4:22And I still lose money, but I don't think as badly anymore.
- 4:26I do manage to make a little so.
- 4:29I think back around pretty easy, isn't it?
- 4:31Like two cards, whoever is closest to nine.
- 4:34Yeah. Yeah.
- 4:35And then you make money or lose money.
- 4:38Well, if it's at a casino, chances are they they're going to be losing money.
- 4:43So, Brian, well, Sean is going and getting his dog for you.
- 4:46Yes.
- 4:48What is your relationship to our lovely Nicholas Cage?
- 4:53Oh, I guess a fan for sure.
- 4:56I mean, he has quite the career.
- 5:00And, you know, I think these two movies are great.
- 5:04Example of what I think he.
- 5:07Has evolved into, you know, I mean,
- 5:11I think my first real introduction to him was probably Raising Arizona.
- 5:17And then maybe again with like Conair and then just popping up everywhere.
- 5:24And then, you know, it never like I guess I was never a super fan.
- 5:27I'll say that. Like I enjoy his movies.
- 5:30I enjoy his work, but I'm never necessarily seeking out a Nicholas Cage movie.
- 5:34Although now he's pivoted into this weird
- 5:38horror action thriller side of his career.
- 5:41And that's horror is my favorite genre.
- 5:45So that is I you know, if he's in a horror something, I will watch it.
- 5:50I can't imagine him doing much of like a romantic comedy that I would be like,
- 5:53yes, I need to see Nicholas Cage woo somebody, but kill somebody.
- 5:58Yes, we need more romantic comedies with 60 year old men in them.
- 6:03Yeah. Right. Yeah.
- 6:04Bring back Rosie Perez. Yeah.
- 6:06Yeah. Yeah.
- 6:08He did kind of have that every man like romantic lead for a minute.
- 6:13Yeah. Yeah.
- 6:14But speaking of the horror stuff, he's got a new movie coming out soon.
- 6:17Arcadian. And it's yes.
- 6:19So far, like rating pretty well, like people dig it.
- 6:23So that's that's awesome.
- 6:24I'm excited to get a chance to go see that at some point soon.
- 6:27So we'll have some fresh content for everyone.
- 6:29Yeah. This old stage.
- 6:32Twenty seventeen and twenty eighteen. Get fucked.
- 6:35These are classic, though.
- 6:37I mean, I don't I enjoy mom and dad, actually.
- 6:40It's for well, most of it.
- 6:43Let's do it. Is your beef with it, the ending or lack thereof?
- 6:47Sure. I mean, here's here's my for both of them.
- 6:51Honestly, I'll put them in like a little lowercase H horror.
- 6:56I think they do fall in the category of the greater sphere of it,
- 6:59but I wouldn't necessarily class call it classic by any means.
- 7:03Mandy, a little bit more so, but we'll we'll get into that.
- 7:06But I think for me, the biggest pet peeve I have with mom and dad
- 7:09is that it's only an hour and 20 minutes, but it feels like an hour 45.
- 7:15And it ramps up really well.
- 7:17Like, I love the premise.
- 7:18I mean, who, you know, it really builds nicely.
- 7:21But as soon as we start focusing on the main family,
- 7:24all the stakes are gone because the kids are never really in danger.
- 7:28And unless you're the black kid.
- 7:30Well, OK, so well, I was going to bring that up.
- 7:33It's like the the keeping true to horror, like the worst things
- 7:37were happening to the minorities in the movie.
- 7:40But I'm but it kids also like the little boy I for also the daughter
- 7:47for being such kind of a bitchy teenager like who knew it all.
- 7:53She sure as hell didn't know what the hell was going on when kind of the signs
- 7:57were, you know, there was enough information for her to piece together
- 8:01that her parents are crazy.
- 8:03She needs to get her ass into her house, rip her brother out of the house
- 8:07and get the fuck out of there.
- 8:08But now she's like, I'm going to talk to you under the bed
- 8:11and we're going to sit like you don't got time for that.
- 8:14And then he just ruins everything because he's like, mom, dad, are you?
- 8:17Is it really you? So all of those pet peeves.
- 8:21But, you know, but the but, you know, getting up into it,
- 8:25it there was it started out as a very promising movie, I think.
- 8:29It's a fine time for all those kids who wanted a new dad
- 8:32to just get out and get a new dad.
- 8:34It'd be fine because old dad wants to kill you.
- 8:37Yeah, new dad. Right. Right.
- 8:39They're probably fucking chill as hell with you.
- 8:41Yeah, you don't even have blackmail old dad to get out of that relationship.
- 8:44You can just leave.
- 8:45You just swap. I mean, yeah.
- 8:48Little family swap action. Exactly.
- 8:50And then they started actually like crossing their own rules
- 8:54in their world building that that was getting like
- 8:57how much violence they were showing to the black kid.
- 9:00Like when he first got home, either he was drunk and all the things
- 9:05and he just hates black people and definitely not him to be his daughter's boyfriend.
- 9:10Or he's already breaking the rule for trying to knock him unconscious
- 9:15as a priority instead of going after his daughter.
- 9:19God, that big fucking meat hand.
- 9:21Yeah. Bounces his head off the ground.
- 9:22That was all. Yeah.
- 9:25I remember Peter and I watched this last night and going back into it,
- 9:30I was just like, you know, I really wanted this movie to go a bit harder
- 9:33with the violence. And then, yeah, when that scene happens, I'm like, no, never mind.
- 9:38This movie does go kind of hard at times.
- 9:40My concern with the violence in this is that every time they have a good
- 9:45like action scene or like something like really tense
- 9:49or building is happening, they cut away to some like
- 9:54fucking yogurt story 10 years ago.
- 9:57And it's like, come on, just fucking stay with the movie. Yeah.
- 10:01I didn't need to know that Josh hit a fucking dead bird
- 10:05in his dad's T-bird or whatever.
- 10:07Well, also those weird flashbacks, I think they could have worked
- 10:11if they would have like put them in relevant points in the story.
- 10:15Agreed. Like when the kid like runs into the car
- 10:18didn't like run away from his dad. Do it then.
- 10:21Why the fuck did the kid start the car and then just get out?
- 10:25I wondered that too.
- 10:27Because fucking Josh. God damn it.
- 10:29So many think again, because he's a dumb kid.
- 10:32He's the one who was like, oh, they must be like it wasn't for his sister.
- 10:35He would undo their their their
- 10:39restraints at the end of the movie.
- 10:40And do what do we think happened?
- 10:43I mean, they have to just rot.
- 10:45They dragged the parents into the basement, tied them up,
- 10:49and then sat there waiting for them to wake up when they could have just left.
- 10:53Or call the police because the cops weren't going to kill you. Yeah.
- 10:58Yeah, literally no one else is going to kill you.
- 11:01Like, that's it. Yeah.
- 11:02It's those two fuckers. A minority. Well, right. Yeah.
- 11:06I mean, the cards were stacked against him anyway. Yeah.
- 11:08Why was that lady so concerned with the kid leaving the PSA tease?
- 11:13Like, you got more time.
- 11:16This is really going to affect your life.
- 11:18It's like, no, it's the fucking PSA tease.
- 11:22Right. And that's the thing, actually, I felt bad about.
- 11:25I felt weird about too, is that, you know, he's trying to be set up
- 11:28as this character who's the smart one.
- 11:30He texts, you know, I crushed this test.
- 11:33And then what did he say?
- 11:34He said there was some word he used and I was like, I don't think that's a real word.
- 11:38I think if you put that on the piece that you would have failed,
- 11:41I think it was like hugest or something.
- 11:44He used some huger.
- 11:46He used some weird word.
- 11:48And then again, if he's going to be the brains of the like the show, the movie,
- 11:52then like it seemed he was only literally there to be the punching bag.
- 11:57Like any time there needed to be violence instead of hitting the daughter,
- 12:01they were like, let's just hit the black man.
- 12:04Which in 2017 maybe didn't sit as bad as now.
- 12:08It's like, oh, yeah, that's a little weird.
- 12:10A little bit worse now. We're still figuring things out.
- 12:13Yeah. Right. Exactly.
- 12:14Punch your daughter. It's fine.
- 12:18But I think the I think the most horrific scene in the movie, though,
- 12:21was after the sister gives birth and whether or not she was going to kill that baby.
- 12:26And that was the line where I was like, where is this movie?
- 12:29Is it going to cross it?
- 12:30Is it going to go there and be really fucked up?
- 12:33Or is it going to stay?
- 12:34Opportunity to bite its head off.
- 12:35I just go Ozzy Osborne on it and just like write it in.
- 12:38I do want to say, though, Nick, you did bring up a good point about
- 12:41him being able to hit his daughter's movie.
- 12:43She did try and light him on fire.
- 12:45True. So by our own rules, he gets one punch.
- 12:49Yeah, one punch. So that's fair.
- 12:51For your context, Brian, we with the Wicker Man,
- 12:54we decided that if someone is trying to light you on fire,
- 12:57then you can gender, you can punch them no matter what.
- 13:00All right. There.
- 13:01She wants to punch.
- 13:04But even that fire, like, and correct me if I'm wrong.
- 13:07Maybe I maybe I don't know how gas works enough.
- 13:10But based on the way and how much gas had filled that basement
- 13:15after it was lit, I think it would be a much bigger explosion
- 13:19and also have gone back through the hose and like wherever the main source
- 13:24and just, you know, that was like a gentle
- 13:28like fart lit on fire and blew him across the room.
- 13:31We want to get technical.
- 13:32Honestly, it probably would not have ignited.
- 13:35Oh, it's a very specific like you've got a backdraft situation
- 13:42where the door is introducing oxygen.
- 13:44Yeah. And so you do have the gas fuel.
- 13:47OK. Oxygen.
- 13:48Because I've been watching a lot of Mythbusters.
- 13:51I burn a lot of things and like stoichiometry is a thing.
- 13:55Well, it is convenient that he like struck the matches
- 13:59and then just held the door open and then, you know,
- 14:01allowed the matches to be able to catch nicely.
- 14:05The idea of that trap, though, that was a pretty cool.
- 14:06It was a good trap. Yeah.
- 14:08It was her best idea of the entire movie.
- 14:10She finally proved her worth.
- 14:12This movie needed to home alone a bit harder.
- 14:15Yes. And that would have been great.
- 14:18A little bit of like comedy in it, like put the parents to the ringers.
- 14:22That would have been fun.
- 14:23I think this movie just had like three ideas and that's like where they left it.
- 14:28It's like, oh, man, we'll have parents attacking children.
- 14:31OK, I like it. And at one point, we're going to have like a sawzall
- 14:37and we'll say it's all like, OK, you're a new homeowner.
- 14:42You just discovered this tool. Yeah. Write it into the movie.
- 14:45That's fine. And we'll punch a black kid.
- 14:49OK, we got ourselves a film. Let's green light this.
- 14:52This is terrible.
- 14:53I mean, it is from the guy who made Crank.
- 14:56Like it does feel like from the guy who made feels like also
- 15:00a ghostwriter, Spirit of Von Johnson and Spirit of Von Johnson.
- 15:03You're right. A movie that I think fucking rules.
- 15:06Yes. Yeah.
- 15:07So this is really like a low point in that director's career.
- 15:11Yeah. I mean, it was entertaining.
- 15:14I had fun up till maybe like the last 20 minutes.
- 15:18I do love the directors like frenetic, like energy
- 15:22when it comes to action and chasing, like that's all fun to watch.
- 15:26And like the payoff of the grandparents coming over is.
- 15:29Yeah, yeah, that is.
- 15:30That was a fun, delightful, stupid.
- 15:33That's the entire movie.
- 15:34My favorite part of the movie is just the old man
- 15:38getting like weird war story ish over like stabbing his kid.
- 15:43But that is another situation where the rules are broken
- 15:45because the mother-in-law tries to kill Kendall.
- 15:48Kendall. Exactly.
- 15:50That's a stripper name.
- 15:52Unless this is just how she is.
- 15:54And she's always hated Kendall and like, you're not good enough for my son.
- 15:57You whore that I'm trying to kill my that I'm trying to kill Brent.
- 16:02Yeah. Right.
- 16:03Yeah, exactly.
- 16:04Brent, what a terrible name.
- 16:05Brent is a shitty name.
- 16:06Brent and can Brent and Kendall.
- 16:08Have you known many Brent's?
- 16:10I have known three Brent's actually, which is really maybe one.
- 16:15Many brands. I think I know too.
- 16:17I have a friend named Brett who everyone thinks is named Brent.
- 16:21I would change my fucking name if I was named Brett
- 16:25and everyone called me Brent.
- 16:27That's horrible.
- 16:28Like both are bad names.
- 16:29Sorry, Brett. Brett doesn't listen to this. Good.
- 16:33No, Brett's listen to this.
- 16:36This is Brett free.
- 16:37Brett Airwaves.
- 16:39I mean, I grew up in Minnesota, so we were against the Brett.
- 16:42All the. Yeah, we're we're calling it now.
- 16:44We're an anti Brett podcast.
- 16:46Anti Brett, anti Brent.
- 16:48If it sounds like you play lacrosse, get the fuck out of here.
- 16:51We're not into this.
- 16:53You're out of here, Mackenzie.
- 16:57That applies to male Mackenzie's, male Kenzie's.
- 17:00That's what I was thinking.
- 17:01Yeah, Kenzie.
- 17:03Clarification.
- 17:04Lady Mackenzie's can listen if they like.
- 17:06Yeah, that's fine. Lady Lacrosse.
- 17:08You're cool. Yeah.
- 17:09You can listen to this podcast, but you won't.
- 17:11That does fit my type.
- 17:16My feeling on this movie is that it was way more fun than it deserves to be.
- 17:21It is not a good movie, but it is kind of a delight.
- 17:25I think that's a credit to your actors in it.
- 17:27Like without Nicholas or even her.
- 17:31I mean, they were both great together.
- 17:33I would have watched them and could have cared less about the kids.
- 17:36I mean, if they wanted to kill the kids from the start and just deal with,
- 17:39oh, we just killed our kids. Now, what do we do?
- 17:42That would have been OK to me, too.
- 17:44Was it weird to anyone else that like they never established him
- 17:48as being like a great father?
- 17:50They always establish him as being kind of unhinged.
- 17:52So yeah, the weird event doesn't seem to matter.
- 17:57It's just like he kind of woke up one day and was like,
- 17:59I'm going to go with the flow today.
- 18:00Let's see what let's see what the people are doing.
- 18:02Yeah. Oh, we're killing kids today.
- 18:04Nice. I've been thinking about this.
- 18:06Maybe I could knock off one or two more that are just not on the list.
- 18:11Where do you think the signal started?
- 18:13Who sent who's attacking us?
- 18:15I just like the fact that that's a part of it is just upsetting to me.
- 18:20I'm like, why is that even there?
- 18:21Just have them start killing people.
- 18:23I just needed this movie to have like two more months in the writing room.
- 18:30This needed to be developed so much more for me.
- 18:33Like I watch it and I'm just like, why is that happening?
- 18:37Why is that happening?
- 18:38There's not even like an attempt at it.
- 18:40This movie bothers me.
- 18:42And I had to review or revisit like why it went forward.
- 18:47And it's because it was going up against Next or something.
- 18:49Yeah, it was next.
- 18:51No amount of exploding.
- 18:52Jessica Beals would say of next.
- 18:54I don't know.
- 18:56Now that I've watched Mom and Dad again, I kind of think I should have gone back in time.
- 19:01No, no. This is where this is worth talking about.
- 19:04It's enjoyable.
- 19:06It's a struggle for me,
- 19:08but it's not horror enough or comedy enough for me.
- 19:12True. I think is my problem.
- 19:13It's like everything just falls a little short.
- 19:16There's moments I enjoyed for sure.
- 19:18I liked the grandparents.
- 19:21I liked when the mom gave birth
- 19:23and then she stands up and the umbilical cords just dragging on. Yeah.
- 19:28Yeah, that was gnarly. That was pretty gnarly.
- 19:31I'm sad they didn't bite the umbilical cord to get it away fast enough.
- 19:34Like, oh, but I think I just want more biting in this.
- 19:38There's a couple bites.
- 19:39There was a there was some biting because the daughter bites Kendall.
- 19:43Yeah, which was a gunshot wound, which damn.
- 19:46I did. I did appreciate the use of a hanger as a weapon by the mom.
- 19:52Yeah, that was pretty how she got it through his cheek.
- 19:55That's impressive.
- 19:57And nobody tried to just restrain the hanger arm.
- 20:00It's like, no, just hold the closet.
- 20:02Why didn't they wrap the fucking closet door shut?
- 20:05Exactly. There was a thing right there on the handle.
- 20:08And and it's just like that's another example of dumb kids.
- 20:12Like kids are the worst.
- 20:14We should kill them. The whole movie.
- 20:15These kids, they've been trying to kill you.
- 20:17And now you're just going to like chill out
- 20:21in this while she's behind this closet where she's already proven
- 20:24that she's like close to breaking out and we're just going to laugh about it.
- 20:27Like you deserve the hanger then that that she that's what you get.
- 20:32You hear that, fetuses?
- 20:39I hope my ex-girlfriend's new girlfriend keeps listening to this podcast.
- 20:44But I think I also enjoy this
- 20:47because I've just seen a string of bad horror movies in theaters.
- 20:52And so it's just like this is at least a better than them.
- 20:55Even with all of its flaws.
- 20:57Without getting into it too much for Mandy, I do appreciate that.
- 21:01Both these movies are kind of like attempts at schlocky,
- 21:05like 70s, 80 B movies with a budget and with Nicolas Cage.
- 21:10Yeah. Well, mom and dad probably didn't even have that huge of a budget.
- 21:13I had enough of a budget for Nicolas Cage. Sure.
- 21:16But it was also like the beginning of him coming back.
- 21:19So he probably wasn't bringing in more than a couple of mills.
- 21:21They just rented a house and like they got an Airbnb for a weekend.
- 21:25Right. And they're like, hey, guys, check it out.
- 21:28I slapped together this script and that house probably was set up
- 21:33that way, too, with all the dumb fucking stuff on the walls.
- 21:35Oh, yeah. You didn't even have to do any set dressing.
- 21:37That's suburbia to a T.
- 21:39From a visual perspective, like what do you think of this movie overall?
- 21:43I think editing saved it.
- 21:45And but I also love I like the color palette that they use in it.
- 21:49And I like a little bit of washed out suburban look.
- 21:53Yeah. Suburban lighting.
- 21:55Everything is just a little bit soft.
- 21:58And I think it's a good contrast to Mandy in the sense that like
- 22:02Mandy is a visual art piece.
- 22:05And this is like a movie like this is something you can watch at home.
- 22:09Mandy is something that was better in the theater or in a nice,
- 22:13like big screen, complete darkness.
- 22:15Just be immersed in that world.
- 22:17But mom and dad could just, you know, you could have commercial breaks on TBS
- 22:20and be cooking dinner and you'd catch everything important.
- 22:24Yeah, it's pretty well put.
- 22:27So you watch it. OK, this is a slight off shoot.
- 22:32You watch a lot of horror movies.
- 22:33What would you say is one horror movie slightly better
- 22:36and one horror movie slightly worse than this?
- 22:39What are its neighbors?
- 22:42OK, that's a great question.
- 22:46Wow. OK, I think something similar in vain,
- 22:50but kind of gives you like the violence that you want.
- 22:53And it was that horror movie that came out.
- 22:56And I apologize, I don't remember the name.
- 22:59Mayhem. Stephen Youn is in it.
- 23:02It's the office. They I think Blumhouse produced it.
- 23:06Every employee has to like kill another employee to like move on to the next round.
- 23:10And to me, it works because it's similar in like visual.
- 23:15It's a little high paid, fast edit, you know, quick kill, lots of violence.
- 23:19But it ups the violence more because it's all adults.
- 23:23And so and then slightly worse.
- 23:28I'll go with what was in theaters recently.
- 23:30I I'll I just saw immaculate.
- 23:35That was long and boring and the payoff was not good.
- 23:39So mom and dad is definitely shorter than.
- 23:43OK, so yeah, that's the bonus point.
- 23:46But but immaculate does have
- 23:49umbilical cord biting off in it.
- 23:51So you do get that. That's awesome.
- 23:54Sorry, spoiler. I apologize.
- 23:56I should I shouldn't.
- 23:58I don't think there's a huge overlap of people who listen to our show
- 24:01and people who care about a spoiler for immaculate.
- 24:04People who listen to our show and then actually watch movies.
- 24:08Nobody watches the movies we talk about.
- 24:11You'd be surprised.
- 24:12Nathan does.
- 24:14We do have a couple of friends, though, who don't listen to our podcasts
- 24:17because they say they haven't watched the movie and they want to watch the movies
- 24:20first. I'm like, you never go watch 60 for Nick Cage movies.
- 24:24Not a fucking chance.
- 24:26That's a lot.
- 24:27Like, we don't even want to do that.
- 24:29And we have we have done that.
- 24:31We've watched more than that.
- 24:33Yeah, that's true.
- 24:34Yeah, this is going to be we'll have something like 70 episodes
- 24:37by the time we're done with the bracket and some bonus episodes.
- 24:40So, so yeah, we're in the thick of it for sure.
- 24:43Do you have a prediction of what do you all have your favorite front runners
- 24:47or what you think?
- 24:48I mean, without giving too much away, I think I've got a couple of like top dogs
- 24:52that I would be pretty satisfied to see make it all the way.
- 24:55I don't think there's going to be one that I'm going to be like, fuck you.
- 25:00Yeah, I've got maybe a top five, but I don't think there's some
- 25:04like really strong ones in some of the categories.
- 25:07I don't know. I feel like some categories just are better vehicles
- 25:10for Nicholas Cage, for sure.
- 25:12Romantic comedy is not the best for him.
- 25:14Sure. Captain Crowley's mandolin all the way, baby.
- 25:16Oh, yeah.
- 25:18I enjoy that movie.
- 25:19It's a good movie, but I just I cannot imagine that one making it.
- 25:23It's fine if you're a fascist sympathizer.
- 25:27We do live in America.
- 25:30I just love Mondra's, that dumb fuck
- 25:33getting shot in the ass by a cannon.
- 25:34Yeah, that's pretty good. His best role.
- 25:37It is probably his best role.
- 25:39There's the butt stuff.
- 25:40We found it on the matrix of good movie.
- 25:45Good cage, bad movie, bad cage, good, bad, bad, good.
- 25:48Where would you put this movie and this Nicholas Cage performance?
- 25:53I would say this is average for him.
- 25:57I think he this is pretty Nicholas Cage, but he didn't go.
- 26:02He had a few moments, you know, a few eye looks or things.
- 26:05But I think he could have, as you were saying,
- 26:07he could have even gone further with his crazy.
- 26:10So I but it was it was an average good performance.
- 26:13I think for me, I would put the movie as bad
- 26:17and his performance as square in the middle mid
- 26:21other than some of those like good snapshots of him,
- 26:24him getting blown up in slow mo pretty fucking solid.
- 26:29Good phase. Now, that's not an acting.
- 26:32He's a better actor. He got blown up for real.
- 26:34But like so, you know, a bad and a mid.
- 26:37And I like this movie a lot.
- 26:40Like I think it's fun and stupid and it's an easy short movie to watch.
- 26:45Yes, could be shorter. Could be.
- 26:47Or just faster. Just cut a little like move things along faster.
- 26:51Yeah. Yeah, faster.
- 26:53I enjoyed this movie a lot more than I thought I would on the rewatch.
- 26:56Like all the problems I remember having with it.
- 26:58I'm like, no, this is just dumb fun.
- 27:01I it's not a good movie, but it's a fun movie.
- 27:03So I put it on like I put on the leaning on the bad side of like fine.
- 27:09As for Nick Cage, I think he does some good work in this.
- 27:11I really like the crazy to like normal switch.
- 27:16He does a few times.
- 27:18And he has worked with this director before and with Spirit of On Johns and.
- 27:25He gave exactly what I think he was supposed to give for this movie.
- 27:28I think he did his job. Josh.
- 27:36I think this is a bad movie and a bad take from Nicholas Cage
- 27:40and that's not necessarily all his fault.
- 27:44I think it's just Primal's fucking gold.
- 27:48Primal, he had something to sink his teeth into.
- 27:50I just don't feel like he had a like anything given to him
- 27:56for like a script.
- 27:57It's like, here's some dailies and we're just going to work through this
- 28:00and just give us whatever you want.
- 28:02I'm not going to bother directing you.
- 28:04Nothing felt like, I don't know, strong about his performance.
- 28:09Like it was just like, I'm going to read the line and I'm going to do something.
- 28:14And that's how I'm going to collect my money today.
- 28:17I don't think he cared about it.
- 28:19And I could be completely wrong.
- 28:21I'd be surprised if this is a role he cared about.
- 28:24I watched some interviews from this one.
- 28:26He likes the director.
- 28:27He likes to interview.
- 28:29And he likes to say positive things about the shows and movies.
- 28:32He does. It's true, because he wants people to watch them.
- 28:35Because that's how he gets paid.
- 28:37It doesn't work for your career if you just dog shit.
- 28:39Yeah. When you when you go out on a press tour and you start bagging on your job,
- 28:43they will start wondering why they hired you.
- 28:45Don't come watch this movie. It sucks.
- 28:47I didn't even the Madame Web effect.
- 28:49Hmm. Yeah.
- 28:51So and yeah, I think this comes down to a movie
- 28:54I wouldn't even recommend to somebody.
- 28:56I would highly recommend this movie to people.
- 28:58I would I would recommend.
- 29:00This is why people don't talk to you, though.
- 29:02No, there are a lot of reasons people don't talk to me.
- 29:04It's high on the list. Mom and dad.
- 29:07No, because people are always asking for like accessible horror to what I can.
- 29:11It's not too gory.
- 29:12It's not too scary.
- 29:14And it's got a familiar face.
- 29:16So, you know, you can be comfortable.
- 29:18But yeah, I would push this movie.
- 29:20That's fine. I mean, you're only a guest for one night. Great.
- 29:28Well established that our guests have no power at all,
- 29:30but we still want their opinion. Yes.
- 29:35I mean, I can see why there would be an appeal for it.
- 29:38It's not a movie for me.
- 29:41Aside from a couple of scenes in it where I'm like, OK,
- 29:44that would have been cooler if they fleshed it out.
- 29:46It could have used a couple more dead kids.
- 29:49Or it could have used like a bunch of old people breaking out at the end
- 29:53and like a big like everybody like getting the pit, like, yes.
- 29:57In the middle, old people versus baby boomers.
- 30:01Fight. That would have been cool.
- 30:03Yeah. Like once we've established that, like grandparents are fighting back.
- 30:07Absolutely. Then you like. Yes.
- 30:09Cut through because you don't want to spoil that.
- 30:11That was a good reveal. Yeah.
- 30:12It's just like the doors breaking down in an old folks home.
- 30:16Yeah. Like they're Vietnam, like trauma.
- 30:22Yeah, that would.
- 30:26Siphalus because it's an old folks home.
- 30:29Yeah, it is rampant. Old folks.
- 30:31Fuck. That's how they kill you the slow way.
- 30:34They just come back and have sex with you.
- 30:38Hopefully not parents having sex with their kids.
- 30:40I was going to say that takes a weirder angle with this movie.
- 30:44Well, we got to stay kind of close to the the core concept.
- 30:47Oh, I was really wondering,
- 30:49would this be an awesome way to find out you were adopted? Oh, yeah.
- 30:53That like you just come home and like have a nice dinner
- 30:56with your no longer parents and or not so parents.
- 31:02It's like, oh, shit.
- 31:03You know how everybody else is like killing?
- 31:05Like if you never if you didn't know you were adopted,
- 31:07how conflicted would you be if like you got home, your parents
- 31:10aren't trying to kill you?
- 31:12Yeah, I feel like I'd be pretty happy about not being dead, but
- 31:14I'd have some feelings. Yeah.
- 31:16I would be terrible, though, because like if you survive
- 31:20and you're just out in the world, there's someone out there
- 31:21who desperately wants to kill you.
- 31:23Mm hmm. If they can find you.
- 31:25And they might not even know why. Yeah.
- 31:28So if you don't have a public job like Weatherman,
- 31:31you just see a picture of somebody.
- 31:32Why do I want to kill that person?
- 31:34Really want to fuck that guy up?
- 31:36That's just normal weatherman feeling.
- 31:39I mean, there are definitely people like that out there.
- 31:41Yeah, true enough.
- 31:43Any final thoughts on this one?
- 31:45It's a romp.
- 31:47It's a romp.
- 31:51A romp and a romp. Perfect. Mm hmm.
- 31:55Mandy. Nice.
- 31:57I like your new segues.
- 32:00What's a segway?
- 32:03Very clear.
- 32:05I fucking love Mandy.
- 32:07I'm just going to say that this movie is awesome.
- 32:10It's terrific.
- 32:11I actually know exactly what you were talking about.
- 32:14And I watch it big screen
- 32:17with like the the backlighting on the TV and all the lights off.
- 32:21And oh, it's such a visual feast.
- 32:23I fired up the volcano and I just got. Yeah.
- 32:26Really into this movie.
- 32:28Good.
- 32:29And the scenes where like the cultist is like staring
- 32:33and he's on drugs and I'm on drugs.
- 32:35And we're just doing this together.
- 32:37You're there. You're vibing.
- 32:38He's fucking failing at a tuck and pose.
- 32:41Just Buffalo Bill and all over my screen.
- 32:44It's like nose shaped dick.
- 32:48I just such a good movie.
- 32:52I love the scene where he's like staring at you
- 32:54and he's doing his little dance and the beams of the house
- 32:57are like right behind his head to like be like beams
- 32:59coming out of his life. Oh, yeah.
- 33:01Just this movie is nice.
- 33:02So well.
- 33:05Yeah.
- 33:06This movie will always remind me of like heavy metal.
- 33:10Yeah, it's like a live action heavy metal.
- 33:13Right down to like Mandy is kind of like a like a druid lady
- 33:18and Nicolas Cage is a paladin who is out there like on his.
- 33:24Making his act. Yeah.
- 33:26So I'm glad you brought that up, because actually when I was
- 33:29watching this, I was texting Sean because this movie like
- 33:32it's grody to me.
- 33:33Like I don't super love it.
- 33:35I think it is a visual masterpiece, but I don't generally
- 33:39love like the storyline, the grossness of it.
- 33:43I was thinking like, fuck, I kind of wish this were like a really,
- 33:47really intense animated movie, like something like that,
- 33:51where you can just go fucking wild, take the same visual concepts,
- 33:55but just like take it to that next level because of animation.
- 33:58And that to me is kind of like where it hits the sweet spot for me.
- 34:02This one, like watching Mandy's boring face, like pulsing in and out
- 34:07for fucking an hour, like I'm not into it.
- 34:11It just doesn't do it for me.
- 34:13I love that slow build. I don't know why.
- 34:15Yeah, nothing really happens.
- 34:16You have to be in the right mind hour, but it just it goes and like.
- 34:20I mean, things are happening. Yeah.
- 34:22There's plot points hitting hard the whole time,
- 34:25but he doesn't start killing people.
- 34:27He doesn't fight back. Yeah.
- 34:29The thing I noticed is, yeah, you have that hour
- 34:32and then he goes gets the crossbow and the axe
- 34:35and then you get the Mandy title card and then it's just him.
- 34:39Yeah. Pick up.
- 34:40And I'm like, you could start the movie here and it would still be amazing.
- 34:44But I would have preferred that.
- 34:46I love an hour of just the protagonist being just beaten down.
- 34:51Oh, yeah. Physically and emotionally.
- 34:53And like the audience is feeling shitty.
- 34:56Yeah. And then it's like, finally, you get that moment of resistance
- 34:59and fighting back and it's like, fuck, yeah, let's do this.
- 35:02I'm here with you.
- 35:02I'm not saying that's how you should do the movie.
- 35:04I'm saying this could be a separate film and it still would. Sure.
- 35:08Go hard. Yeah.
- 35:09And I love to that even at that halfway mark, after he gets his weapons,
- 35:14we feel like he's on his, you know, he's going to go fuck some people up.
- 35:18He gets fucked up like immediately.
- 35:20And it's like, OK, no, he's still not invincible.
- 35:22Like still just a dude.
- 35:24It's going to be a struggle. Yeah.
- 35:25So and then he does all the drugs.
- 35:28All of them.
- 35:29He does set out on his crusade starting off by like slamming
- 35:33half a bottle of vodka. That's true.
- 35:35So it's no wonder that like his initial like endeavors fail.
- 35:40Yeah. Man, I want some of that weird, like gross dark Vaseline.
- 35:44The demon semen.
- 35:46Give me some of that shit, man.
- 35:48Like turns the world into a cartoon.
- 35:51Yeah. Yeah. I want to fuck with that.
- 35:53It gives you cool like Indiana Jones face melting skills. Right.
- 35:58Have any of you watched Beyond the Black Rainbow?
- 36:01No, I still need to see it.
- 36:03I say that I'm going to about every three weeks and I still haven't done it.
- 36:07I really want to watch it.
- 36:08I watched the trailer for it and it was like right up against me
- 36:11watching this movie and I was like, I'm not going to watch that right now.
- 36:15Yeah, it's another like hugely visual. Yeah.
- 36:17Yeah. Yeah. I actually thought it was the same DP, but it's a different guy.
- 36:21So that was kind of shocking.
- 36:23This DP, though, also did dream scenario, which was kind of interesting.
- 36:27Fun fact. Yeah.
- 36:28We should watch Beyond the Black Rainbow at some point. Yeah.
- 36:31And the core and the core.
- 36:33Brian, have you seen the core?
- 36:34I love the core.
- 36:35The core fucking rules.
- 36:36The core is so good.
- 36:38I have to watch this movie.
- 36:40Oh, you've never seen it.
- 36:42I've never seen the core. Sean's never seen it.
- 36:44Oh, you know the premise, though. Yeah.
- 36:46Yes. OK, good.
- 36:47I showed him the orange being sprayed on fire.
- 36:51So he gets it.
- 36:53That's all you need to know.
- 36:55Oh, I was working at Hollywood video in Chanhassen, Minnesota
- 36:59when that movie came out.
- 37:01And so when it came, we could rent it.
- 37:04I was just like, wow, this this is quite a premise.
- 37:07And what a cast, though.
- 37:09I mean, it's incredible.
- 37:10You got the tooch. Yeah.
- 37:13Got a little so, you know, it's going to be big.
- 37:15Absolutely. Aaron Eckhart.
- 37:17Everything he touches is gold.
- 37:19Yeah. I think Hillary Swank thought she was going to get a third.
- 37:22Probably. Oh, my God. Yeah.
- 37:25That was just for us.
- 37:25T.J. Qualls, everybody.
- 37:27They got everybody.
- 37:28All those.
- 37:30Dude, I ran into T.J. Qualls recently.
- 37:34Really? Yeah, he was.
- 37:36Well, he was at a bar, I think, in Sherman Oaks
- 37:39and doing like karaoke.
- 37:42Cool. Fuck. Yeah.
- 37:43He wasn't participating, but he was there with some friends and was like, oh, wow.
- 37:48Yeah, I think he's great and everything.
- 37:50Yeah. And T.J. Qualls is one of those celebrities that like,
- 37:53you don't see that guy out and you're like, maybe that's T.J. Qualls. Right. No, no.
- 38:00He's got a face.
- 38:01He sure does. And he's tall, too, right?
- 38:04Yes. Taller than me. Five eight.
- 38:05So he's at least five, nine, five, ten.
- 38:09Well, one thought I had watching this film,
- 38:12Peter and I were kind of texting about it because Peter was like,
- 38:15this isn't for me and I'm just on a fucking ride.
- 38:19And I'm just like, all right, how can I describe
- 38:21this film in a way that really like maybe it'll get it across?
- 38:24The first thing is I love weird cosmic horror.
- 38:27I'm not a big I'm not a big fan of gore unless it's like
- 38:32evil, dead, hyperviolence.
- 38:34It's where it goes from the point of like, I'm uncomfortable with.
- 38:37The amount of blood.
- 38:38You know, that looks too real to just like it's so stupidly over the top.
- 38:43I'm like, that can never happen.
- 38:45Yeah. And this movie rides more of the gross line for me, but I'm here for it.
- 38:50And I think it's because it's starting to start to get into that weird.
- 38:54Maybe demons, maybe, you know, looking past the veil
- 38:58and him becoming like mad, which is just my jam for horror.
- 39:04And the other thought I had was
- 39:07this is kind of a weird dissection of like the slasher film.
- 39:11Mm hmm. You have the hippies who are all into drugs and bad things
- 39:15and they have to be punished and the monster is just one they created.
- 39:19Yeah. And all the classics acts chainsaw crossbow chainsaw fights.
- 39:25So good.
- 39:27It felt to me like it was a giant Dungeons and Dragons campaign.
- 39:31Oh, yeah. This is just people making this story up as they go.
- 39:36And they're like, and then blood spewed everywhere, man.
- 39:40And he chopped his guy's head off and he got in the car and there was flame.
- 39:44And there was tigers.
- 39:45And then like their faces melted.
- 39:47Like, yeah, I think for me, violence, when it's merited,
- 39:52I don't, you know, depending on what you're trying to get at, like saw to me,
- 39:56I think the first one was important for the genre.
- 40:00But now that we're on like 13 or 14 or whatever,
- 40:04I think it's kind of jumped the shark and and even, you know, but like this,
- 40:10it is over the top, but it feels within the world of the art that it's created.
- 40:14Like, you know, it doesn't feel for me gratuitous.
- 40:17It just feels that it's visually like, yes, you need to be covered in blood
- 40:22so the red lights can bounce off of your red skin.
- 40:24And we get this stunning visual and in the whites of your eyes pop.
- 40:29So we really see that Nicholas Cage crazy.
- 40:32Like that one look he does after he snaps the neck of the one drug dealer.
- 40:38It's bug eyed. I was like, that is classic Nick Cage.
- 40:41Yeah. Yeah.
- 40:42How does the saw film have a shark trap yet?
- 40:45A shark trap? Like, have they like have they done a shark in a saw film?
- 40:49Have they jumped the shark actually?
- 40:51Like is the way to get out of the danger to jump over a shark?
- 40:55Yeah, I hope so. I don't think so.
- 40:57I don't not yet. OK, I have this rock.
- 41:00Yeah, I have to ask you about one of my favorite horror sequels.
- 41:04And I don't. Yes. I don't watch a lot of horror movies.
- 41:06I've seen it after I've said how many I watch.
- 41:09I do. I know already what this is going to be.
- 41:11So human centipede, too.
- 41:14Oh, wow. I've seen the trilogy. Yes.
- 41:17OK, I have not seen the third one, but you don't need to.
- 41:21I didn't think I needed to after I watched the second one,
- 41:24because it it truly had peaked at that point.
- 41:26Oh, God. In like super meta and just like
- 41:32the results seem obvious from the get go.
- 41:36He's a security guard.
- 41:37He stapled mouths to buttholes.
- 41:39People are dying, obviously.
- 41:41Yeah. Yeah.
- 41:46Oh, what a great movie review.
- 41:49It gives you what you want.
- 41:50You've gotten a lot better at succinctly like breaking down a film.
- 41:56But that ending that and like that's again another baby.
- 42:01And like it that's fucked up.
- 42:03Like that's to me. I was like too much, too much.
- 42:07We really did. But in this, you know, in that universe, there isn't too much.
- 42:11I guess, you know, it's actually now that I think about it,
- 42:14I'm surprised number four hasn't randomly been like.
- 42:18Tease that it's coming because it's been a while since three came out.
- 42:22Yeah, the people need more human centipede.
- 42:24Bigger, longer. It's pretty.
- 42:27Oh, God. I mean, a pediar.
- 42:31On some number two, actually, like I do like it as a sequel,
- 42:35as in how do you do a follow up to the first one?
- 42:38Like, I think it's an interesting meta storyline.
- 42:41Involving the security guard,
- 42:44which I think is, you know, pretty smart on his end.
- 42:47But Tom, it was Tom Six.
- 42:50Yeah, it just gets twisted from there.
- 42:52Well, the human centipede movie gets twisted, guys.
- 42:55Oh, God. You know what number three is about? I don't.
- 43:00My succinct summary of it.
- 43:03No, it's in a men's prison at a correctional facility.
- 43:09Oh, yeah. And a warden decides to.
- 43:13Put the practice.
- 43:15I bet the scenes in the exercise yard were so good.
- 43:19Oh, it's definitely the longest human centipede.
- 43:24Oh, hell, yeah. The human.
- 43:26Like, yeah, I think that's what actually I think that might be part of it.
- 43:30I think he tried to get like 100.
- 43:31I think that was a goal. OK, guys.
- 43:33All right. Human centipede for apparently the mindset for this is just
- 43:38my new job. So goodbye.
- 43:41Hey, electrician.
- 43:43Hello, centipede.
- 43:45Even if it doesn't get made, as long as you sell it for real,
- 43:47this is going to be a field of dreams.
- 43:49If you build it, they will come.
- 43:50So, guys, I'm glad you're here.
- 43:53I brought some tape and a safe.
- 43:54What are you doing now? Yeah.
- 43:57You heard it here first.
- 43:58One of our friends went to college with somebody who wrote like Sharknado
- 44:03or like a lot of versus something and just like makes residuals off of that.
- 44:08All the time. That's incredible.
- 44:09That's the American dream.
- 44:11Passing income like that. Absolutely.
- 44:13Every once every once every year, you just get a check for like, right.
- 44:17No reason. It's like, well, I did that.
- 44:19And that's actually one thing I've learned since moving to L.A.
- 44:22is just having to just be less precious about needing to actually write
- 44:26anything to completion.
- 44:28You can just sell a tornadoes with sharks.
- 44:32I don't do anything to completion.
- 44:33That's that's called edging.
- 44:36You need to get elevator.
- 44:37OK, you all know my beef with Sharknado.
- 44:41I don't I don't recall your beef with Sharknado is it.
- 44:44Tara Reed. Like so meteor, a lot.
- 44:47Me meteor meteorologically sound college classes was call
- 44:52was a bad science at the movies.
- 44:55And it was just about that sounds cool.
- 44:57We watched art school. I went to art college
- 45:01where we watched.
- 45:02We watched if you couldn't tell science fiction films.
- 45:05And our teacher, who was like a geologist, would just pause the movie
- 45:09and just rant at us about how none of the science made sense.
- 45:12It was a hoot. Oh, you're going to fucking love the core.
- 45:17I'm surprised we never watched the core.
- 45:19Also, you know what?
- 45:20We might have because we didn't actually watch the full movie.
- 45:22She would just skip around to scenes to yell at us about the science.
- 45:26But the final year was your college accredited.
- 45:29Yes. How?
- 45:32Art school, I can credit something.
- 45:33Yeah. So our final project was to make to pitch our own bad science movie.
- 45:41And New York had just had that hurricane and the city was flooded.
- 45:44So I came up with Gator Kane.
- 45:47Gator a movie about a hurricane hitting New York,
- 45:50getting all the gators out and going to town two years later.
- 45:53Sharknado is a thing.
- 45:54I mean, you could probably still push Gator Kane.
- 45:57You could sell that easy.
- 46:00Not after this podcast, because someone else is going to do it
- 46:02before my lazy ass does.
- 46:03Yeah, it's Nick.
- 46:04No, I'm balls deep in human centipede for.
- 46:10I've been actually working of a script like a quick outline.
- 46:15As I was talking. Yeah.
- 46:17Man has podcast decides to centipede goes too far.
- 46:23That's a good three act. Yeah.
- 46:26That's what I was signing my NDA for.
- 46:29Goes too far.
- 46:32Goes too far. So with Mandy, like what's what's your favorite part from this movie?
- 46:36Like each of you just go for it.
- 46:38The chainsaw fights pretty bad ass.
- 46:40Chainsaw fights really cool.
- 46:43I just the whole thing is such just a visual treat and it just.
- 46:48It turns into a cartoon at times.
- 46:52Yeah, just all of it. Yeah.
- 46:55That's what I mean. I meant literally a cartoon
- 46:57and the animation looks very much like heavy metal.
- 46:59Mm hmm. I think that's what really gets me is like the structure of it
- 47:04is my favorite part. I know that's not like a scene.
- 47:07Still a thing to like about a movie. Yeah. Yeah.
- 47:10Yeah. The wall of color.
- 47:13Yeah. Just constant like saturation.
- 47:16I'm having a hard time picking one thing that I like about it
- 47:18because I love all of it.
- 47:20Yeah, I agree.
- 47:21Why don't you prime us?
- 47:23Give us yours and we'll steal it.
- 47:24We'll edit you out and say this was my favorite part.
- 47:26Good thing we have an individual track for you.
- 47:28Oh, I think it's it's just so beautiful.
- 47:33I mean, it just you do have to be in the right mindset.
- 47:36Like if you're looking for something fast and fun and furious, it's not this.
- 47:41Like you do have to settle into a world.
- 47:45And again, like we were saying, I think it helps when you set your own atmosphere.
- 47:50But once you're there, man, oh, my God, like it's like a it's
- 47:55it's almost like you're on a psychedelic with them.
- 47:59Yeah. And because it's just the visual is such a feast all the time.
- 48:04And it's just and it just seems so classic of a story, you know,
- 48:09bad people come in, kill your wife.
- 48:12It's like Gladiator, but on like shrooms.
- 48:15They want your wife. She laughs at their penis.
- 48:18Yeah. Murder ensues.
- 48:20I like they don't even just kill her.
- 48:21They fucking burn her in a sleeping bag.
- 48:24Yeah. And in front of him. Oh, I love how once she starts laughing
- 48:28at him, his first reaction is just starting masturbating frantically.
- 48:32So yes, that's OK.
- 48:33Well, he's a grower, not a shower.
- 48:35There's a couple of scenes that really stand out.
- 48:37He was a shower.
- 48:38I love Cheddar Goblin.
- 48:40Cheddar, yes, Cheddar Goblin.
- 48:43And I love the Jeremiah sound sand song.
- 48:47It's so fucking mad and it's incredible.
- 48:50Do do do do do do do do.
- 48:55So your favorite parts are the comedy parts that take you out of the movie,
- 48:58which is fine, because I think they're there to add a little bit of like
- 49:02leavening to like give you an emotional break from.
- 49:07Absolutely. Yeah, I think it's to remind you that it's like
- 49:10all the violence that's about to come.
- 49:12It's OK. Well, even beyond that, it's a real comedy.
- 49:14There's there's like snapshots of violence that stand out, too.
- 49:17It's like the dude, the fucking mouth breathing window rolling up and down.
- 49:21Oh, my God. Taking the axe to the dome.
- 49:24Like the visual of that is really like impressive.
- 49:27Like I love that his death is just as funny as his life.
- 49:32Like I love him just playing with the windows
- 49:36and like the obvious irritation that Brother Swan has with it all.
- 49:40And then like when he's dying, he's just like drying off his car after he washes it.
- 49:45And then he gets like a non fight.
- 49:49Yeah, it's just the axe comes out of the air and kills him.
- 49:52And that's it. That's all inherited.
- 49:55Yep. I love it. I love all of it. I can't.
- 49:57Yeah, I think my favorite part might be the allowances
- 50:01for the supernatural in this world. Yeah.
- 50:04Yeah. Of the little demon ocarina.
- 50:07I love the horn of a brexus.
- 50:10Yeah. Ocarina of Grime.
- 50:12Oh, all right. That's pretty good.
- 50:15The cool little like dagger.
- 50:18And I love that these supernatural like artifacts
- 50:22have a cool strobing green light when you present them.
- 50:25Yes. It's I mean, it's so like weird.
- 50:28So much attention to detail.
- 50:30Yeah. But it's like this is part of the world.
- 50:34It's like, did you bring the horn of a brexus?
- 50:36Oh, I did bring the horn of a brexus.
- 50:39Also, I also love a galactic shout out shout out in anything.
- 50:42Oh, yeah. So in the again, in the matrix of a good movie,
- 50:47good cage, bad movie, bad cage, good, bad, bad, good.
- 50:50Where do you slot Mandy and Nick Cage?
- 50:53Good movie. Good.
- 50:55Nicholas Cage. Great movie.
- 50:58Even. Yeah, I'm right there with you.
- 51:01Like his performance in this is he doesn't say a lot,
- 51:05but he does a lot with that.
- 51:09Him chugging bathroom vodka in his tighty whitey's
- 51:12and that awesome tiger shirt.
- 51:13Yeah. His emotions are like out there.
- 51:17I got permission to have a life size replica of the axe
- 51:20to put above my Nicholas Cage blu ray collection.
- 51:23So we're it's only three hundred dollars.
- 51:26So oh, that's nothing.
- 51:28I know. So I looked it up immediately.
- 51:31Oh, my God. Yes. Get it. I support that.
- 51:34Nick and I have discussed at the end of this getting
- 51:36we have to get like commemorative tattoos from something
- 51:40Nick Cage related, and I think I'm going to get the axe.
- 51:42Oh, yeah. Oh, I'm still pushing the fake teeth from Vampire's Kiss.
- 51:49That's a great one. That's also really good.
- 51:51All right. So, Nick, what do you think?
- 51:53I think this is an outstanding movie and a terrific performance.
- 51:59I think everything that he brings
- 52:02in lieu of like a vocal performance, like all of his just like
- 52:07super on point reactions and emotions are just they blow me away.
- 52:12Like the way he connected, like Panos must have done
- 52:17just a terrific job communicating with Cage about what he wanted
- 52:22the role to be because it just gets me.
- 52:26It's terrific.
- 52:27Even the scenes that are like purely Nicholas Cage, like in the car
- 52:30when he's covered in gore and he's just like staring over.
- 52:33And it's like, that's do you think it's the acid scene from?
- 52:41I'm very away to massive talent is a little link to that.
- 52:44The back and forth.
- 52:46It's a very specific shot. I'd like to think it is.
- 52:48I like, oh, just the camera shot. Yeah.
- 52:52Yeah, I could see that.
- 52:54I could see it also as like there's only so many ways
- 52:59to film an interaction between two people in the front of a car.
- 53:02That's fair. We've seen Drive Angry. Yeah.
- 53:05OK, so I've turned the corner on this movie overall.
- 53:08I do think that it is probably a great, great.
- 53:10I do think that I don't like it.
- 53:13There is fine. Yeah.
- 53:15Like, I don't think it's for me, but I do respect it for the art of it,
- 53:20for the insanity of it, for the performance of it.
- 53:23How did you view it sitting alone in a chair in my living room
- 53:27with the lights on on a laptop? So Peter made every choice.
- 53:34I have watched it in a more cinematic way before.
- 53:36The first time I watched it was a little more cinematic and it still didn't
- 53:40tickle me. But you know, fair, fair.
- 53:43That's a good point, though.
- 53:44I mean, I think so part of the experience for me in this round
- 53:48to that we're in, we're in 32 down to 16.
- 53:52Watching it with people, watching movies with people
- 53:55enhances my experience of it.
- 53:57I think that I gain more from having that live interaction
- 54:01of laughing at some absurdist shit in Mom and Dad or
- 54:06marveling at a visual freeze frame from Mandy, you know, that it's
- 54:11much more fun for me to watch it with someone.
- 54:14So next time we'll provide a film party for you.
- 54:18And that's a beautiful pitch for why we should go to the theaters.
- 54:22I like to read Peter, if you were lonely, you can just tell us.
- 54:28You don't have to like, oh, it took me 43 episodes to say it.
- 54:33I'm lonely.
- 54:35You know, to pretend you don't like good movies.
- 54:38I don't know if I get this one, guys.
- 54:40Can you just come over and like with me?
- 54:43Yeah, you had your choice.
- 54:46So you had a child. OK, so I am part of the sad lads.
- 54:49I sort of asked and answered, but, you know, one movie
- 54:54advances in our bracket ology style.
- 54:57One movie must fall.
- 54:58So Brian, as the guest, you get to go first, but your opinion doesn't matter.
- 55:03So you can say whatever the fuck you want.
- 55:06Well, I do think in this instance, I will probably
- 55:10end up agreeing with the hosts and the producer.
- 55:14I think it's Mandy that should move on.
- 55:16But I'm glad to know that mom and dad made it this far
- 55:21because it is definitely above the halfway mark of.
- 55:25I would agree with that.
- 55:27It's an opinion outside of like.
- 55:31Adaptation, I can't think of outside of adaptation.
- 55:35I can't think of anything that hasn't gone past the first round
- 55:37that I would have like put this behind Primal.
- 55:40No, Primal so good.
- 55:42No, you're you're sleeping on Primal.
- 55:44I think you watched it on the wrong day.
- 55:46I watched it twice in both times.
- 55:48I could not.
- 55:49That was back when you were still drinking, though.
- 55:52It's fair.
- 55:52You got to watch it now when you can actually enjoy it.
- 55:55I said I'd sit down and watch it with you.
- 55:57I know it's going to be good.
- 55:59I'm planning the whole event.
- 56:01There's going to be like sparkling cider
- 56:05and rose petals and a staple gun.
- 56:10Yeah. And some duct tape.
- 56:11Just bring your butthole.
- 56:12Yeah, that's all you got to bring.
- 56:15The prologue to human time.
- 56:17Before.
- 56:19So yeah, Mandy, I think I'm I'm full Mandy.
- 56:23Yeah, I've got a full Mandy right now.
- 56:27Well, Mandy.
- 56:29Yeah, so next episode, we've got
- 56:31Conair and Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance
- 56:35and special guest Chris Cofell of film school rejects.
- 56:39So that'll be a fun one. Fun.
- 56:41Yeah. Good times.
- 56:43Brian, thank you for being here.
- 56:45Yeah, this is really nice.
- 56:46Have you? Yeah, this is great.
- 56:47If you are interested in being on the slicks, teen,
- 56:51which is the next part of the bracket, let us know.
- 56:55Obviously, it only gets sexier from here.
- 56:59Yes, I love it.
- 57:01Oh, did we settle on final four?
- 57:03Scum? Yeah. Yeah. OK.
- 57:08And then I don't know what the championship is going to be.
- 57:10And then just boring ass normal sex.
- 57:13Missionary face to face, looking at each other and really feeling it.
- 57:18Oh, God. Lights on.
- 57:20It's going to be a weird blow job from Joe.
- 57:25What's your favorite color? OK.
- 57:28I gotta go.
- 57:29Yeah, Brian, anything that you want to promote pitch.
- 57:32Shout out.
- 57:33I'm in this weird karaoke competition thing, but it's karaoke knockout.
- 57:38I thought I was signing up for literally a one night type of thing.
- 57:42Turns out it's a two month engagement.
- 57:45And still just one paycheck.
- 57:47Oh, yeah.
- 57:48And you have to make it through all these rounds.
- 57:51And it's basically a giant popularity contest.
- 57:53But I've been very fortunate to have good friends and good supporters
- 57:58have gotten me through what I believe will be this first major cut
- 58:02through the group round.
- 58:03I mean, we've gone to the semifinals, but all of the votes reset.
- 58:07So but so what does it get me?
- 58:10Ten thousand dollars.
- 58:11If I make it all the way to the end, I sing in L.A.
- 58:15for some karaoke.
- 58:17And I will use that money to film a documentary in South Korea
- 58:21with two of my friends who the three of us were Korean adoptees.
- 58:26And coincidentally, this year's
- 58:29karaoke competition is benefiting an adoption organization.
- 58:34Help us adopt.org.
- 58:35So it seems the universe is putting everything in alignment for me.
- 58:40It also feels that this is my year of reality competition winning.
- 58:45So I think.
- 58:49It's just going to happen, you know, manifest that the secret.
- 58:51So karaoke knockout dot org
- 58:55or slash Brian hyphen Kim hyphen McCormick.
- 59:01I think that's how you get to me.
- 59:02I'm not sure.
- 59:03Peter, if I didn't, I apologize.
- 59:05But if you know, we'll figure it out.
- 59:08Yes, thank you. I appreciate it.
- 59:10But yeah, that's the pitch.
- 59:11Just yeah, just realized Brian and I probably Brian
- 59:14and I would have survived mom and dad.
- 59:17Oh, yeah, there you go.
- 59:18Oh, I would have definitely.
- 59:19Unless Jackie Chan, this you might have to cut, but I don't know.
- 59:23Jackie Chan is potentially my father.
- 59:26So, you know, he I don't know that I'd want him trying to come
- 59:30off after and try to kill me.
- 59:31But hold on.
- 59:32Is that something your mom told you like growing up?
- 59:35Like Jackie Chan was your father?
- 59:37A long story made short.
- 59:41Take as much time as you want on this.
- 59:43Oh, great.
- 59:44Well, I I I was a Korean adoptee.
- 59:48I came out of Seoul.
- 59:49I came here at three months old and my whole life.
- 59:52I just associated being Korean.
- 59:54But many, many, many people have said that I look like Jackie Chan,
- 59:58including white, Asian, all people.
- 1:00:01I've been chased down streets.
- 1:00:02I've been chased at casinos.
- 1:00:04I've been asked for autographs.
- 1:00:06I've been asked to take pictures.
- 1:00:07It's just been there my whole life.
- 1:00:08And then I was working as an accountant in New York
- 1:00:12as one of my survival jobs.
- 1:00:14And in that pool was a Chinese woman who told me that Jackie Chan
- 1:00:18had been like in love with the South Korean woman for like almost a decade.
- 1:00:23But felt like he couldn't marry her because he wasn't.
- 1:00:28You know, they were living in two different countries.
- 1:00:30He was poor. He wasn't famous yet.
- 1:00:31So and it was like right around the same time that I was magically born.
- 1:00:37And then so he wrote a memoir and he
- 1:00:42I was going to wait for his autograph at the Barnes and Noble in Union Square.
- 1:00:48And I was going to grab his water bottle and I was going to run out the store.
- 1:00:52Problem is with that store, though, is this book signing is up on like the third floor
- 1:00:55and the only way to do it is escalators.
- 1:00:57You got to Jackie Chan your way out of. Yeah, Jackie.
- 1:01:00I would have jacked my way out of it.
- 1:01:02So the problem is, then you got Jackie Chan, Jackie Chan and after you.
- 1:01:05Oh, yeah. God, right.
- 1:01:07And then you got him coming.
- 1:01:08But he ended up canceling his session because I believe his wife
- 1:01:13found out about all of the women he slept with through the memoir.
- 1:01:17I don't think he privy to that.
- 1:01:21At least that's what my brain reminds me.
- 1:01:23Who am I forgetting to tell about all the illicit affairs?
- 1:01:27Well, it didn't have to be affairs.
- 1:01:29I mean, it could have been before. Right.
- 1:01:30Before marriage. That's true. That's true.
- 1:01:33Who marries like an international film star and says
- 1:01:37he probably kept it in his pants.
- 1:01:42But and then I did a DNA test and it came back that I have
- 1:01:47like 40 something Korean, 30 something Chinese.
- 1:01:51And the rest is Japanese.
- 1:01:53You hear that, Jackie Chan? Right. It's possible.
- 1:01:56But so, yeah, that's the story about my potentially famous.
- 1:01:59I fucking love that. That is a terrific story.
- 1:02:02That was better than my
- 1:02:04lazy attempt at making another dead parent joke. Yeah.
- 1:02:08So thank you for that.
- 1:02:09Yeah, you can. You're welcome.
- 1:02:10You can beat that dead horse the day you die.
- 1:02:14Terrible.
- 1:02:16That's a good episode.
- 1:02:17I enjoyed myself.
- 1:02:18Well, I will definitely vote for you so long as you do not sing sweet Caroline.
- 1:02:22The moment you sing sweet Caroline, votes are out the door.
- 1:02:25Great. I will not. Thank you.
- 1:02:27So no worries on that.
- 1:02:28I will only vote for you if you sing sweet Caroline.
- 1:02:30So it's a net neutral. You still got my vote.
- 1:02:33OK, thank you. There we go. Plus one.
- 1:02:35There we go. All right.

- 1:03:02with his anything like brand.
- 1:03:04That's unfortunate. It is.

- 1:03:53of friends who text me things I say on my own podcast.
- 1:03:56And this week I get a text from Nathan.
- 1:03:59Sean, Nathan has joined the exclusive club of someone
- 1:04:02who randomly messaged me quotes from our podcast.
- 1:04:04So, yeah, double dip on that one, Nathan.
- 1:04:09Love you, buddy. Bye bye.
- 1:04:11Oh, my.

- 1:04:28Yeah, actually.
- 1:04:29Who were you describing?
- 1:04:30Were you describing for John? Yeah.
- 1:04:32OK. Yeah. Last episode, we were trying to explain for to everyone.
- 1:04:36Brian, are you familiar with war?
- 1:04:39Uh, people being eaten.
- 1:04:41Yeah. But eaten whole is the big part of it.
- 1:04:43Eating whole. Oh, I didn't know there was that specification.
- 1:04:46Which makes it entirely impossible. So. Yeah.
- 1:04:50It's a really dumb fetish.
- 1:04:53That's going to be the twist at the end of Human Centipede four.
- 1:04:57The ass eats everybody else. Human Centipede four.
- 1:05:00The most ass eating you can legally put in a rated NC 17 movie.
- 1:05:06I think they're going to draw a line with how much ass eating I put in this movie.
- 1:05:10You're going to have to have debates with them and they're like,
- 1:05:12take one ass eating out. Just one.
- 1:05:15You're like, no, it's my art.
- 1:05:17I can't do it.
- 1:05:18Each and every one of them is important to my story.
- 1:05:21That's right.
- 1:05:22This is my lived experience.
- 1:05:25You are a millennial.
- 1:05:27You will not silence me.
