- 0:02Speaker 1: Life audio.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Today, I'm talking about that John changes his mind on
- 0:09Speaker 2: a cheesy nineties song now that he's a girl dad
- 0:12Speaker 2: and ponders whether aliens are real. You know, I'll reveal
- 0:15Speaker 2: the commercial jingle that makes me homicidal and tell you
- 0:18Speaker 2: the insane story of the last bare knuckle boxing match.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Well us a conversation about friends, enemies, and the best revenge.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Today's episode is not sponsored by July What are your plants?
- 0:29Speaker 2: All you want? They're already dead? But first award from
- 0:32Speaker 2: my actual sponsor, Johnny.
- 0:42Speaker 1: I think it's time to take another trip to Bantertown.
- 0:45Speaker 1: We'll talk about that.
- 0:46Speaker 2: You're taking a trip, taking.
- 0:48Speaker 3: Trip, not a bantertown wherever, Bahama banter Bahama Town. Yeah,
- 0:56Speaker 3: it's my daughter's eighteenth.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Third excuse, John, Just take a trip. You take a
- 1:02Speaker 2: lot of vacations.
- 1:03Speaker 1: You can't have a thing you're celebrating on a trip.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Is that an exciting But I.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Feel like you do a thing where you try to
- 1:07Speaker 2: qualify everything. Well, we had to do something. It's a
- 1:10Speaker 2: special thing. I don't normally like spending money, but in
- 1:13Speaker 2: this case I'm making this after just go waste your money.
- 1:17Speaker 3: That's true that I don't like spending money, and yet
- 1:20Speaker 3: here we are. Yeah, we can't all be like you Johnny,
- 1:23Speaker 3: just spend indiscriminately without even thinking about it, and some
- 1:26Speaker 3: of us need to make.
- 1:28Speaker 2: It about it. I'm in a lot of trouble.
- 1:32Speaker 3: Okay, let's talk about Patreon for a second. Now we're
- 1:37Speaker 3: she has I mean, she has a tryout tonight. I
- 1:40Speaker 3: try out tomorrow night.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Right now.
- 1:42Speaker 3: She's in weightlifting in practice. She gets up at five
- 1:47Speaker 3: point forty five right now to drive for school ball.
- 1:50Speaker 3: And then and she's taken online Latin this summer, and
- 1:55Speaker 3: she has to read two books for summer reading, and
- 1:57Speaker 3: there's a senior thesis. And she'll come back. We'll do
- 2:02Speaker 3: next week's practices and then we fly to Dallas. Well
- 2:05Speaker 3: we'll sorry, we do the cruise three days with her
- 2:07Speaker 3: and her best friend for her eighteenth birthday. Then we'll
- 2:10Speaker 3: come back. She'll do all this again next week, and
- 2:13Speaker 3: then we fly out next Sunday to a Prospect camp
- 2:17Speaker 3: in Dallas.
- 2:19Speaker 2: I'm doing online pig Laton this summer. That's all I have.
- 2:26Speaker 1: That's all we're gonna start starting. We're gonna speak anything.
- 2:29Speaker 2: No, we're not going to do that. Thanks, stupid, stay
- 2:34Speaker 2: I don't know. Uh, they about a new guitar.
- 2:37Speaker 1: No, I have a problem. Finally something good happened.
- 2:40Speaker 2: I got a little problem. Yeah. So what happened was
- 2:43Speaker 2: they my one the electronics started freaking out, and so
- 2:48Speaker 2: I took it to the shop and they were like,
- 2:49Speaker 2: we need to have this for a couple of weeks.
- 2:51Speaker 1: Say which one.
- 2:52Speaker 2: This was the tobacco Sunburst gloss finish. It's a Martin.
- 2:58Speaker 2: I've had it for a while. It's like an amber
- 3:00Speaker 2: tobacco the first so I was like okay. So then
- 3:04Speaker 2: I knew they were going to have it like two
- 3:05Speaker 2: or three weeks, and they were, and I had shows
- 3:07Speaker 2: and I was like.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Well, who's justified? Now I see where this was going.
- 3:10Speaker 2: That's what I'm saying. I had to have another guitar.
- 3:12Speaker 2: So I was like, so they sold me another like
- 3:15Speaker 2: stop gap guitar, and I was like, I don't like it,
- 3:18Speaker 2: I'll just sell it or whatever.
- 3:19Speaker 1: You couldn't just rent one?
- 3:21Speaker 2: I mean, can you rent guitars?
- 3:23Speaker 1: Did you ask?
- 3:24Speaker 2: No? Immediately, just like rent a guitar.
- 3:26Speaker 3: I just immediately thought, how could I drop a lot
- 3:28Speaker 3: more money on another new product while my great product
- 3:31Speaker 3: is being.
- 3:31Speaker 2: So I bought this guitar and it's actually fine. It's
- 3:34Speaker 2: a good It's been a good guitar too. It's like
- 3:37Speaker 2: a Martin with a Bolton nick. I'm not going to
- 3:38Speaker 2: get into the weeds of guitar stuff, but that's really
- 3:41Speaker 2: rare for an acoustic it's a Bolton nick. So I
- 3:44Speaker 2: was like, oh, this is and it sounded kind of good.
- 3:46Speaker 2: I was playing some shows with it. It's very light.
- 3:48Speaker 2: I was like, all right, it's a little thinner body.
- 3:51Speaker 2: But then I started thinking, like I want to some reason,
- 3:55Speaker 2: I started getting ads because I bought that guitar, and
- 3:57Speaker 2: somehow you start, the algorithm starts finding you. And I
- 3:59Speaker 2: started seeing these Martin a is releasing, like this vintage
- 4:03Speaker 2: series their new guitars, but there's a vintage vibe and
- 4:07Speaker 2: it's like a Dreadnought but it's a tobacco sunburst, but
- 4:11Speaker 2: it's matt finished. I find I blind half the front
- 4:15Speaker 2: two rows with my guitar when they have a glass finished.
- 4:18Speaker 2: I hate it because I do a lot of shows
- 4:19Speaker 2: now with spotlight because I'm kind of standing in the spotlight.
- 4:25Speaker 2: So it bugs me so much because people wincing when
- 4:28Speaker 2: you're telling.
- 4:29Speaker 1: A joke, so which normally when they wind, it's because the.
- 4:33Speaker 2: Joke itself, right. But so anyway, so I got so
- 4:37Speaker 2: I bought that guitar and I really like it.
- 4:38Speaker 1: Okay, did you buy the other one too?
- 4:40Speaker 2: Yeah? I have four guitars. Now you bought two. I
- 4:43Speaker 2: have four acoustics.
- 4:43Speaker 1: You took a guitar in and have a repaired and
- 4:45Speaker 1: came out with two new guitars.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Not too at the same time, but yes, in different
- 4:49Speaker 2: different times.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Are you gonna sell the one?
- 4:51Speaker 2: I'm probably gonna sell a couple of guitars, So I may,
- 4:53Speaker 2: I may. We'll talk about it. I'll put it on
- 4:55Speaker 2: the website, talk about that podcast dot com if you
- 4:58Speaker 2: want to buy my old.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Guitars you want to sign.
- 5:01Speaker 2: I don't need to sell the guitars necessarily. It's not
- 5:03Speaker 2: like I'm needing insulin money or anything right now. But
- 5:05Speaker 2: I mean those days could come. Give me another global pandemic,
- 5:08Speaker 2: and I'll let you know how things are going. But yeah,
- 5:13Speaker 2: I just don't need four. But the one I have
- 5:15Speaker 2: had forever I can't sell because it's got the big
- 5:17Speaker 2: crack and it's been glued and it just I wouldn't
- 5:19Speaker 2: I wouldn't sell it to somebody, just because I can't
- 5:21Speaker 2: trust the stability of it. But it's the other reason I
- 5:22Speaker 2: can't fly with it. Yeah, so, but it's a great guitar.
- 5:26Speaker 2: I would use it all day, but it's just like
- 5:28Speaker 2: i'd play the opry with it, but I just can't
- 5:30Speaker 2: put it on a plane because I have no idea
- 5:31Speaker 2: what a plane cabin pressure would do.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Too.
- 5:34Speaker 2: So anyway, I have four acoustics now, which is for
- 5:37Speaker 2: no reason I have a problem. I know there's people
- 5:40Speaker 2: who listen to this show that have like fourteen. Like
- 5:43Speaker 2: if you're a guitar guy, it's almost like shoes.
- 5:45Speaker 1: He's the guy in the Bible, is like, at least
- 5:47Speaker 1: think you gottah.
- 5:48Speaker 2: No, I know, No, I'm just saying like I think
- 5:52Speaker 2: of myself as having too many. But I know some
- 5:54Speaker 2: people who have a real problem.
- 5:56Speaker 3: I think that if you play music for a living,
- 5:58Speaker 3: which is what you do, four acoustics is acceptable.
- 6:02Speaker 1: I'm as much. I'd love to bust your chops.
- 6:03Speaker 2: About it, but it's not like I'm used you can
- 6:05Speaker 2: only use one at a time. That's all always say,
- 6:07Speaker 2: like I'm not switching the guitars between songs like that
- 6:12Speaker 2: runs out with the thing and throws you, Bobby, I'll
- 6:15Speaker 2: throw it to him off stage. You can't throw my guitar.
- 6:17Speaker 2: It's gonna hit the better catch it, Bobby. Better catch it, Bobby.
- 6:20Speaker 2: And they did that. I went to a show at
- 6:21Speaker 2: the Opry with my brother. We went and saw that.
- 6:24Speaker 2: I did, I say this. Last week we went saw Nashville,
- 6:26Speaker 2: the show Nashville. I don't think you told it so Nashville.
- 6:29Speaker 2: That show was on forever, five seasons or whatever. They
- 6:33Speaker 2: had like a reunion show of that of all the
- 6:35Speaker 2: music they wrote, which I did, I say the opera, Yeah, okay,
- 6:40Speaker 2: it's the Rymen. So they did a show of like
- 6:44Speaker 2: four of their artists that were you know, but I
- 6:48Speaker 2: had no idea that.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Hayden, No, she wasn't there.
- 6:51Speaker 2: It was the guy that played Deacon and the guy
- 6:53Speaker 2: that played Joshua Jackson. I can't remember his character, Avery Barklay,
- 6:57Speaker 2: the young song haired kid, good looking kid.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:00Speaker 2: And then you had Scarlet Yeah. And then you had
- 7:04Speaker 2: yeah and her and so and the other guy's British.
- 7:08Speaker 1: Yeah, the guy that.
- 7:09Speaker 2: Played her love interest on the show and heard he
- 7:13Speaker 2: was a songwriter partner.
- 7:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:14Speaker 2: And I can't remember his character's name. But Anyway, he
- 7:17Speaker 2: was there. So it's those four and then a full
- 7:19Speaker 2: light house band. That's unbelievable, Graham and Winner players. Anyway,
- 7:22Speaker 2: it was so fun, but I can't remember where I
- 7:25Speaker 2: was going with that. Oh he threw the he starts throwing.
- 7:27Speaker 2: He's throwing guitars off stage like that between songs, and
- 7:31Speaker 2: I was just like, man, you got cats that guitar.
- 7:33Speaker 2: I think it's a it's a great look. It's a
- 7:36Speaker 2: great look on stage because it's like, whoa ten thousand
- 7:41Speaker 2: dollars Martin, he just threw. But if it hits the ground,
- 7:44Speaker 2: maybe they're all insured though, you know.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Yeah, but with a with an insurance company really cover that.
- 7:49Speaker 1: Can you tell what happened? Well, we have video threw it.
- 7:54Speaker 3: And that reminds me of the time we were playing carpetball,
- 7:57Speaker 3: yeah downstairs, remember those maybe and Weston, who could get
- 8:01Speaker 3: a little competitive may or may not have thrown the
- 8:04Speaker 3: carpet ball a little too harding him flying off and
- 8:07Speaker 3: right into my guitar.
- 8:08Speaker 2: God damage.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm pretty certain dinged it. My guitar has a
- 8:12Speaker 1: crack in the back and it's dings. I have, you know, it's.
- 8:16Speaker 3: A it's a Takamini and yeah, it's the Steve Warrener
- 8:20Speaker 3: edition and I had it set up the other day.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Again. Yeah, it sounds better today than the day I
- 8:27Speaker 1: bought it, like that acoustics should be.
- 8:29Speaker 3: It sounds so good on stage right now. But yeah,
- 8:33Speaker 3: but it bears the marks of a youth pastor's guitar,
- 8:37Speaker 3: like you know what I'm saying.
- 8:38Speaker 2: Yeah, you were letting kids bang on it all the time,
- 8:40Speaker 2: and it was just a you that's what you do, though,
- 8:43Speaker 2: you were a good youth pastor.
- 8:44Speaker 1: Oh it's hanging right there, right here, it is.
- 8:46Speaker 2: We're looking right at it. It's not not not seen
- 8:49Speaker 2: in the shot, but it's there.
- 8:51Speaker 1: You can't see the marks really from here. I mean
- 8:53Speaker 1: want that boy want it though?
- 8:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know. But anyway, Yeah, I'm playing the
- 8:59Speaker 2: Opper tomorrow as we record this, so it'll be too
- 9:04Speaker 2: late for you to get tickets if you're listening, But
- 9:06Speaker 2: if you want to get tickets to other shows Johnny
- 9:08Speaker 2: W dot com, please come and listen. I know I
- 9:12Speaker 2: said last week that my taping was going on sale
- 9:15Speaker 2: the second show in Knoxville. He did not go on
- 9:18Speaker 2: sale because it was a holiday weekend and I was
- 9:20Speaker 2: told that everybody's off at the BSU. But it's supposed
- 9:24Speaker 2: to go on sale today. So please, if you're listening
- 9:26Speaker 2: to this, if you hear the sound of my voice
- 9:28Speaker 2: and you want to come to my special taping, I
- 9:31Speaker 2: really need you.
- 9:32Speaker 3: If you can hear Johnny right now, then he's probably
- 9:34Speaker 3: already been taken and we need your help to get him.
- 9:37Speaker 2: By the right. It needs you to buy tickets. That's
- 9:40Speaker 2: the only thing. This is what, this is what yeah, yeah,
- 9:46Speaker 2: but anyway, they this is what the terrorists want. They
- 9:49Speaker 2: demanded that you buy no less than four tickets for
- 9:53Speaker 2: everyone in your family. Yeah.
- 9:54Speaker 1: They're not very good terrorists to me.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Now, like some of the worst. Yeah, but anyway, come
- 10:01Speaker 2: to that show August twenty ninth, and it's on sale
- 10:04Speaker 2: on the website johnnyew dot com. I love you, John
- 10:08Speaker 2: How would you talk about that podcast? Dot com? Of

- 10:19Speaker 2: anybody you still out there? You guys?
- 10:21Speaker 1: Hey, hold on, it's this thing on?
- 10:22Speaker 2: Hello? Is this thing on?
- 10:24Speaker 4: It?
- 10:24Speaker 2: Talk about that podcast dot com?
- 10:26Speaker 1: I don't know anyway, Well, it's a summer.
- 10:29Speaker 2: Everybody's they're doing their own things.
- 10:30Speaker 1: Out and about. Yeah, and we understand there's no offense here.
- 10:34Speaker 2: Taking their daughter on eighteenth birthday cruises.
- 10:37Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I saw so. She had her senior pictures
- 10:41Speaker 3: the end of the day.
- 10:41Speaker 2: Uh huh you saw those?
- 10:43Speaker 1: Yeah? Those are those? Are those are hitting you right
- 10:46Speaker 1: in the old gut?
- 10:47Speaker 2: Are they? Well, because you're like, there goes my little girl.
- 10:49Speaker 2: She's all grown up.
- 10:50Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 10:51Speaker 3: So man, well butterfly, this is you know, they time. Hey,
- 10:56Speaker 3: we can laugh about butterfly kisses through five fowls. Butterfly
- 11:05Speaker 3: kisses can make me cry. Oh of course stupid. But
- 11:11Speaker 3: you try to be better, more masculine than butterfly kisses.
- 11:16Speaker 3: But if you don't cry butterfly kisses, you're heartless.
- 11:18Speaker 2: Like remember the last time I heard it, though, It's
- 11:21Speaker 2: like it had its moment and then it just got
- 11:23Speaker 2: so over, kind of went away. I hope he invested. Well,
- 11:28Speaker 2: Bob Carlyle, who I love. I think Bob Carlo is
- 11:31Speaker 2: a legend in Christian music. Yeah, one of the greatest voices,
- 11:34Speaker 2: most signature voices in Christian music ever. And what's funny
- 11:38Speaker 2: about Bob is He sang back up on like so
- 11:42Speaker 2: many projects. You would hear his voice. He would he
- 11:44Speaker 2: was the backup guy. His thing was hit aneuld, hit
- 11:48Speaker 2: any note, and he was great at like layering his
- 11:49Speaker 2: own harmonies. He knew exactly what to do. He would
- 11:52Speaker 2: just make this wall of sound. He would walk into
- 11:55Speaker 2: the This is Brian Duncan, who I follow on Twitter
- 11:57Speaker 2: and we've talked a few times. But Brian Duncan had
- 12:00Speaker 2: Bob Carlo do a ton of his records, and he
- 12:02Speaker 2: would say, Bob carl would walk into the studio and
- 12:04Speaker 2: he would go into the vocal booth and he would say,
- 12:06Speaker 2: give me ten tracks and get out, and he would
- 12:09Speaker 2: just boom boom, boom, boom boom, knock out ten tracks
- 12:11Speaker 2: of what's the line, boom boom boom, and they're done,
- 12:13Speaker 2: and it's like a wall of sound, perfect pitch. And
- 12:17Speaker 2: so that was Bob. But anyway, Butterfly Kisses was this
- 12:19Speaker 2: runaway hit. And one of the things I remember him
- 12:21Speaker 2: saying was when it became a hit, these rich dads
- 12:26Speaker 2: like you with a pool, they would say, will you
- 12:30Speaker 2: come sing that song at my daughter's wedding and I'll
- 12:34Speaker 2: give you six figures or whatever, and he goes, I
- 12:37Speaker 2: turned most of them down, and he goes, I really
- 12:40Speaker 2: wish I had. Like it's one of those things like
- 12:42Speaker 2: he was like, hey, I think he just thought, like
- 12:44Speaker 2: I'm not gonna debase myself.
- 12:46Speaker 1: I'm gonna need that.
- 12:47Speaker 2: But like now it's like, how many millions of dollars
- 12:50Speaker 2: you gotta make? Hey, while the sun shines, Bob, you do.
- 12:54Speaker 2: I'm not saying like, sell yourself, but I'm saying like,
- 12:57Speaker 2: if you got to hit song and somebody's so wrong
- 12:59Speaker 2: with going to I don't know. I just think he
- 13:00Speaker 2: thought I need to be out touring. You know, you
- 13:02Speaker 2: think of yourself like I'm an artist, I'm not a clown.
- 13:05Speaker 2: And then you're like, after a while, you're like that
- 13:07Speaker 2: would pay off my house A clown a couple of
- 13:09Speaker 2: these weddings and I got it paid for house. Yeah, anyway,
- 13:15Speaker 2: don't do that. So I know John will take anything.
- 13:18Speaker 3: Like what do you guys going like, I I write
- 13:20Speaker 3: your book, We'll write for pizza.
- 13:25Speaker 2: Yeah, we get to write a book together. We need
- 13:27Speaker 2: to do that.
- 13:28Speaker 1: Yeah, we really should.
- 13:30Speaker 2: I don't know John's speaking of it'll be the end
- 13:32Speaker 2: of our relationship. Speaking of clown shows, and selling ourselves. John,
- 13:37Speaker 2: it's time to hear from a few of our fine
- 13:39Speaker 2: sponsors to help us keep the lights on here at
- 13:41Speaker 2: a good old talk about that.
- 13:42Speaker 4: Let's hear from them.
- 13:53Speaker 1: I often wonder what we would write about. Does it
- 13:57Speaker 1: have to be funny?
- 13:59Speaker 2: I mean I probably would have some opinions about that,
- 14:01Speaker 2: Like I would want it to not just be it's
- 14:03Speaker 2: like this show, Like I feel like this show definitely
- 14:05Speaker 2: shows a more serious side of me. But then I'm
- 14:08Speaker 2: I'm always a little bit afraid of Like if we
- 14:10Speaker 2: clip out only that as its man, be like, well,
- 14:12Speaker 2: what is this guy? What is he doing? But then
- 14:14Speaker 2: if you never do anything but tell jokes to people,
- 14:16Speaker 2: then they never see like any depth to you. That
- 14:18Speaker 2: would bother me too. Yeah, so I think I would
- 14:21Speaker 2: want both, Okay, But again that's me trying to creative
- 14:24Speaker 2: a narrative around myself. So that's a little bit of
- 14:25Speaker 2: self protection too. So it's kind of done. But I
- 14:28Speaker 2: think you're a little bit always worried, like how am
- 14:30Speaker 2: I being perceived in the Like, come on, man, people
- 14:34Speaker 2: decide what they want, right, Yeah, However, I'm perceived unperceived because.
- 14:37Speaker 1: I don't think it's a joke book.
- 14:39Speaker 2: No, I wouldn't make a joke book.
- 14:42Speaker 1: At one point, you wanted to do something like that.
- 14:44Speaker 2: Well, I'm gonna do that. I'll do a book of
- 14:45Speaker 2: my one liner. It's just because I always wanted like
- 14:47Speaker 2: a little coffee table book like that, because I grew
- 14:49Speaker 2: up with those deep thoughts by Jack Handy looks and
- 14:51Speaker 2: far Side and that kind of stuff.
- 14:53Speaker 3: Yeah, if you ever get thrown off a skyscraper, go
- 14:55Speaker 3: limp like a dummy and maybe someone will catch you,
- 14:58Speaker 3: because hey, freedom me. Yeah, Jack Candy. No, I I
- 15:04Speaker 3: have some ideas. Yeah, I don't know if you know this.
- 15:07Speaker 1: I do a little bit of writing.
- 15:09Speaker 2: So uh, well you do a little prompt and grock
- 15:13Speaker 2: or whatever.
- 15:14Speaker 3: No, I don't let I do not Claude, do not
- 15:17Speaker 3: let Claude write. I did just finish a sixty five
- 15:20Speaker 3: the first draft of a sixty five.
- 15:21Speaker 1: Thousand word manuscript.
- 15:23Speaker 2: I don't like that.
- 15:24Speaker 1: It's three hundred sorry, two hundred and seventy.
- 15:26Speaker 2: Manuscript pages too many words.
- 15:28Speaker 3: But and then turn right around and I have another deadline.
- 15:31Speaker 3: Do tonight for something really exciting. I can't share it yet,
- 15:34Speaker 3: but something pretty special.
- 15:36Speaker 1: Have fun.
- 15:37Speaker 3: But it's not full, it's it's out there worn to secrecy. No,
- 15:42Speaker 3: not out there, but your involvement is not out there.
- 15:44Speaker 3: Well no, yeah, that's true too. I'm officially writing for it.
- 15:48Speaker 2: Can you spell it?
- 15:50Speaker 1: I can, but I'm not going to. May you spell it? Okay?
- 15:54Speaker 1: You hate the whole can May people?
- 15:56Speaker 2: Oh you, oh, can May people are the worst.
- 16:01Speaker 3: I just want to sit down. I don't mean why
- 16:03Speaker 3: I asked in the first place. Hey, guys, I think
- 16:05Speaker 3: it's about time for my segment.
- 16:07Speaker 2: We call it.
- 16:08Speaker 1: They talked about that.
- 16:25Speaker 2: That's pretty good as we're going morning to.
- 16:28Speaker 1: The band's gonna make it.
- 16:30Speaker 3: Marcus Aurelius, Yeah, it was like the philosopher emperor.
- 16:35Speaker 1: He was considered like the last of the five.
- 16:37Speaker 3: Good emperors of the Roman Empire, so started going downhill
- 16:41Speaker 3: after him. Spent a lot of his time battling Germanic
- 16:45Speaker 3: tribes at the border kind of thing, because the Roman
- 16:47Speaker 3: Empire was was beginning to really struggle with being invaded.
- 16:52Speaker 3: Uh oh, some could claim they had already invaded everything else.
- 16:55Speaker 1: But anyway, a thoughtful leader Marcus.
- 16:57Speaker 3: Really yeah, like like intellectual, an intellectual who really wasn't
- 17:03Speaker 3: famous for being intellectual. To after he died, when people
- 17:05Speaker 3: start reading his writings, and so his most famous quote
- 17:07Speaker 3: unquote book is called Meditations.
- 17:09Speaker 1: I don't think he even titled it that, Like he
- 17:12Speaker 1: just wrote his stuff. Yeah, but that's the best kind.
- 17:14Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying, Like, it's right to your
- 17:16Speaker 3: point of He wasn't writing this, probably worried.
- 17:19Speaker 2: About just trying to Yeah, he was just trying to
- 17:21Speaker 2: live a what is it. He was trying to live
- 17:25Speaker 2: a life of what is it called stoicism. Yeah, he
- 17:27Speaker 2: was just into his thoughts. He was thinking, Yeah, he's
- 17:30Speaker 2: a Stoni. He's like, I'm not trying to like beat
- 17:32Speaker 2: a deadline like you.
- 17:34Speaker 1: Right, he hadn't.
- 17:35Speaker 3: He hadn't sold his art along with his soul and
- 17:39Speaker 3: character like some people.
- 17:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:43Speaker 3: Anyway, Marcus Reli is one one eighty AD said, it's short, Johnny,
- 17:51Speaker 3: you're like it, Okay. The best revenge is to not
- 17:55Speaker 3: is not to be like your enemy.
- 17:57Speaker 2: Best revenge is not to be it is to not
- 17:59Speaker 2: be like your Yeah.
- 18:00Speaker 1: What he said is the best revenge is not to
- 18:02Speaker 1: be like your enemy.
- 18:03Speaker 2: I like it.
- 18:06Speaker 1: Yeah, Look you think about I think today's.
- 18:12Speaker 2: Didn't Churchill say something like that? We must be careful
- 18:14Speaker 2: more fighting monsters, not to become monster ourselves something like that.
- 18:17Speaker 3: Anytime you heard a really good quote like that, As
- 18:19Speaker 3: a guy who does the quote segment and has been
- 18:21Speaker 3: hurt and burned before, I can tell you beware if
- 18:24Speaker 3: it sounds too.
- 18:25Speaker 2: Good to be true. Yeah. No, but I'm saying, like,
- 18:27Speaker 2: there's similar quotes out there, But that's a that's probably
- 18:29Speaker 2: the first time.
- 18:30Speaker 1: That's probably where Churchill if it was Churchill, Well, it's crazy.
- 18:32Speaker 3: Is a quote site sent me something from Marcus really
- 18:34Speaker 3: Is And it was different than this, and so in
- 18:36Speaker 3: my research, this is the real one that I found. Yea,
- 18:38Speaker 3: so they will and some of that is to be
- 18:40Speaker 3: expected with translation, right, Yeah, but it adapts over time,
- 18:44Speaker 3: and I try to find back to its original source.
- 18:46Speaker 3: But in this idea that if my enemy is bad enough,
- 18:52Speaker 3: then anything I do is justified towards them, is of
- 18:56Speaker 3: course Marcus really is is not a Christian.
- 18:59Speaker 1: This is not a religion quote.
- 19:02Speaker 3: But the great philosophers would often align with the principles
- 19:07Speaker 3: of faith, because again, all truth is God's truth.
- 19:10Speaker 1: I mean, they would arrive at these plays.
- 19:12Speaker 3: Generosity of both heart and action leads to better living,
- 19:17Speaker 3: better society, better community.
- 19:20Speaker 1: It's just the truth.
- 19:21Speaker 3: It's just an uncreated truth because it reflects the creator,
- 19:25Speaker 3: and it reflects who he is, you know, not what
- 19:28Speaker 3: he just decided things to be. Like, I just think
- 19:31Speaker 3: this idea of like I have these conversations with you,
- 19:36Speaker 3: my daughter and her friends and stuff all the time,
- 19:38Speaker 3: Like how quickly social media world especially can suck them
- 19:42Speaker 3: in to not recognizing it can do for all of us.
- 19:46Speaker 3: You cannot recognize that you're holding the same disdain for someone.
- 19:54Speaker 3: You're holding them in disdain because they held something in
- 19:57Speaker 3: disdain that was wrong, Like you don't see, like, oh,
- 20:01Speaker 3: it's just it's just so simple. There's no judgment here.
- 20:03Speaker 3: I think he's right, Like, it's hard to have the
- 20:06Speaker 3: perspective to go, am I really being different than the
- 20:11Speaker 3: thing that I'm criticizing? Or am I just being a
- 20:16Speaker 3: more proclaimed moral version of it?
- 20:20Speaker 1: Right?
- 20:22Speaker 3: Do I just have a more what I consider to
- 20:24Speaker 3: be a higher ethical approach? But am I doing it?
- 20:29Speaker 1: Not?
- 20:29Speaker 3: Like you know, am I being as opposed to just
- 20:32Speaker 3: am I criticizing it? And it goes back the last
- 20:34Speaker 3: week about how it's so much easier to you know,
- 20:37Speaker 3: curse the darkness than to light a candle, right or you.
- 20:40Speaker 1: Know, to do something about it? So I don't know.
- 20:43Speaker 3: I think, you know, there's a moment in time, and
- 20:48Speaker 3: I don't know if it's the best revenge. I don't
- 20:50Speaker 3: know if your enemy cares. I think that's what really
- 20:52Speaker 3: gets us if you take the high road. And this
- 20:54Speaker 3: is probably where Marcus really couldn't have gotten outside of
- 20:57Speaker 3: the faith, like taking the high road will often lead.
- 20:59Speaker 1: To your cruise fiction.
- 21:00Speaker 3: Yeah, like it doesn't lead to your like And then
- 21:02Speaker 3: I won and everyone set around and it's like, you
- 21:04Speaker 3: know what, John really showed me that his way was
- 21:08Speaker 3: better than like, you're not ever gonna get that.
- 21:10Speaker 1: I used to think you could get that. You know.
- 21:11Speaker 3: So whether or not it's the best revenge, but it
- 21:13Speaker 3: has to be something you are good with within yourself
- 21:16Speaker 3: versus what your enemy is good with.
- 21:18Speaker 2: So it's good. That's that's great. That's a good quote.
- 21:22Speaker 2: I've never heard though one Marcus Aurelis. I need to
- 21:23Speaker 2: read meditations. I think we'll t you to check it out.
- 21:26Speaker 2: You really did that the stoics. You could really benefit
- 21:31Speaker 2: from it, Ed, I think you're right. Yeah, I've been
- 21:34Speaker 2: called a stoic before. John. Let's do my sagments. Let's
- 21:38Speaker 2: start with old jokes. We call it joke about that. John,
- 21:46Speaker 2: someone stole my wife's credit card. I don't I didn't
- 21:49Speaker 2: report it. He's spending less than her.
- 21:51Speaker 1: Come on, oh boy, it's a few of those.
- 21:55Speaker 2: That's an old one. There's always the one of like
- 21:57Speaker 2: I had my credit stolen, or had somebody's telling my
- 22:00Speaker 2: credit card but or my bank called me to report
- 22:02Speaker 2: to see if my credit card was stolen because somebody
- 22:04Speaker 2: bought a book or whatever. There's always those kind of
- 22:08Speaker 2: they bought fruit or John. I showed my hands to
- 22:13Speaker 2: the astrologer and he said, you don't have much time
- 22:16Speaker 2: to live. I said, would you please just pull me
- 22:17Speaker 2: out of the river? See, because that's great John. Finally,
- 22:25Speaker 2: a pastor this will hit home for you, known for
- 22:27Speaker 2: his lengthy sermons, noticed a man get up and leave
- 22:31Speaker 2: during the middle of his message. The man returned just
- 22:33Speaker 2: before the conclusion of the service. After the pastor asked
- 22:35Speaker 2: the man where he'd gone. I went to get a haircut,
- 22:37Speaker 2: he replied. The pastor said, why didn't you just do
- 22:40Speaker 2: that before the service? Because the man answered, I didn't
- 22:42Speaker 2: need one. Then boom.
- 22:47Speaker 1: That's a long sermon. People.
- 22:49Speaker 2: You need to do that one before you start next week.
- 22:51Speaker 2: That's a that's a that's a sermon starter.
- 22:53Speaker 3: Hey, guys, Yeah, guys, a story.
- 23:00Speaker 1: That's great.
- 23:01Speaker 2: You would never You're always like, guys, I only need
- 23:03Speaker 2: you for thirty Listen, I never go along. You always
- 23:05Speaker 2: like trying to pretend that you never go along. It's
- 23:08Speaker 2: so dumb.
- 23:08Speaker 1: I don't pretend. I just tell him, like, you know, hey,
- 23:12Speaker 1: for you.
- 23:13Speaker 2: Got a clock in the back of the room, right
- 23:14Speaker 2: you can see real Is it counting? Does it count
- 23:16Speaker 2: down red? Does it go red after you?
- 23:18Speaker 1: It does?
- 23:18Speaker 3: Oh?
- 23:19Speaker 2: Boy?
- 23:19Speaker 1: But I don't.
- 23:19Speaker 2: I don't really you get into the red.
- 23:21Speaker 1: No, not usually really. I mean, if I do, I'm
- 23:24Speaker 1: in the prayer kind of thing. You know what I'm saying.
- 23:26Speaker 2: That doesn't count. Prayer doesn't count.
- 23:27Speaker 1: No, Hey, to the Lord, that's the Lord's time. The
- 23:31Speaker 1: sermon time is done. The Lord's in the red once
- 23:34Speaker 1: we start praying. That's on him.
- 23:35Speaker 2: So yeah, man, all right, John, let's do this week
- 23:39Speaker 2: in history. We call it talk about Them John. This
- 23:45Speaker 2: week nineteen twenty eight, the first machine sliced bread is sold. Yeah,
- 23:51Speaker 2: best thing since it's bread, some would say, by the
- 23:56Speaker 2: Chiliicough Baking Company of Chilicoth, Missouri. I'm sure I'm since
- 24:00Speaker 2: that wrong. The bread slicing machine was invented by Otto
- 24:03Speaker 2: Frederick wed bread slicer Rothwather. His bread slicer also wrapped
- 24:08Speaker 2: the bread, so I didn't know that. That's kind of
- 24:10Speaker 2: a two in one. In nineteen thirty, Continental Baking Company
- 24:13Speaker 2: introduced the Wonderbread as a sliced bread, which was a hit,
- 24:16Speaker 2: and soon other major companies followed. Slice bread was briefly
- 24:20Speaker 2: banned during World War Two. This is I did not
- 24:22Speaker 2: know to conserve wrapping paper and the steel used in
- 24:27Speaker 2: the slicing machines, which makes sense because of artillery and
- 24:30Speaker 2: what have you. The band was quickly rescinded due to
- 24:33Speaker 2: large public outcry. They were like, look, try to win
- 24:35Speaker 2: the war, but this bread.
- 24:37Speaker 1: Hang in a ton of slice bread this sea know.
- 24:40Speaker 2: Come on listen, this are a way that I could
- 24:43Speaker 2: have public outcry some bread and defeat fascism.
- 24:49Speaker 1: Oh man, man, I want.
- 24:51Speaker 2: That preach anyway. Best thing since bread John this Week
- 24:56Speaker 2: nineteen seventy one.
- 24:57Speaker 3: By the way, I remember being on a trip in
- 24:59Speaker 3: college to Bellingham, Washington for the Student Institute of Campus
- 25:05Speaker 3: Ministry SURE, also known as.
- 25:09Speaker 2: Sick of.
- 25:13Speaker 1: At any rate. That's a true story.
- 25:14Speaker 2: Yeah, that sounds like an evangelical stream. Listen, We're gonna
- 25:18Speaker 2: spread the gospel. We're gonna be gentle with these people. Now, Yeah,
- 25:23Speaker 2: it was.
- 25:23Speaker 3: I think it's kind of tongue in cheek. It was
- 25:24Speaker 3: actually a really amazing experience. But I remember staying with
- 25:27Speaker 3: these I think that one of them was a doctor,
- 25:29Speaker 3: and it was like a really nice house and we
- 25:31Speaker 3: were staying there, and I remember it was one of
- 25:33Speaker 3: the first times anyone.
- 25:34Speaker 1: Ever actually sliced a loaf of bread and made a sandwich.
- 25:37Speaker 2: You had like the electric knife.
- 25:38Speaker 3: No, they just used a knife and sliced it. You
- 25:40Speaker 3: slice it without that like in your kid You're like
- 25:42Speaker 3: I in college. You just smash it. It's hard to do.
- 25:45Speaker 3: You gotta be it was a bread knife.
- 25:47Speaker 1: Johnny.
- 25:47Speaker 2: Well, I know, but I'm okay.
- 25:50Speaker 1: They knew what they were doing.
- 25:51Speaker 3: But the point was I was like, oh, this is
- 25:53Speaker 3: you don't you don't think and I make fun of
- 25:55Speaker 3: kids now.
- 25:56Speaker 2: But and this was a wealthy person. Yeah, that's the
- 25:58Speaker 2: whole point.
- 25:59Speaker 1: Yeah, it was. Back Now, it's everything's yeah.
- 26:01Speaker 3: Now you can go buy a loaf of bread at
- 26:03Speaker 3: at wherever, and you're used to slicing it a little more.
- 26:06Speaker 3: Back then I never had a sandwich that was didn't
- 26:08Speaker 3: come from slice pre sliced bread. You know what I'm saying,
- 26:10Speaker 3: Like it just wasn't anyway. I was just I was
- 26:13Speaker 3: just a poor North Nashville boy.
- 26:15Speaker 2: Was it good bread?
- 26:16Speaker 1: It was great.
- 26:16Speaker 2: That's the thing is, if you can slice bread that easily,
- 26:19Speaker 2: I think it's gonna be a little stiff.
- 26:20Speaker 3: I don't, like, have you ever had the sandwich that
- 26:23Speaker 3: someone sliced a loaf of bread, Johnny? Because if not,
- 26:25Speaker 3: we're doing it on.
- 26:25Speaker 1: Air, and on air bread slice. I'm gonna I'm gonna
- 26:28Speaker 1: does Laura.
- 26:29Speaker 2: Have a bread oven? Do you all have the bread machine?
- 26:30Speaker 2: Bread manon?
- 26:31Speaker 1: We'll still go buy a loaf somewhere.
- 26:33Speaker 2: We're not.
- 26:35Speaker 3: We should have to make all of our own food
- 26:37Speaker 3: from scratch for like a month.
- 26:39Speaker 2: I think somebody did this and it was like he
- 26:41Speaker 2: did an experiment of like I'm gonna make my own
- 26:44Speaker 2: chicken sandwich, and so he bought the chicken, fed the chicken,
- 26:49Speaker 2: did all the things harvested and we'll say harvested in
- 26:52Speaker 2: the chicken, bought the flour, bought the grain, bought the
- 26:57Speaker 2: baked the bread, did all the things. I think it
- 26:59Speaker 2: was third eight dollars. I think I've read I've read
- 27:02Speaker 2: this more than once that he spent thirty eight dollars
- 27:04Speaker 2: on his chicken sandwich.
- 27:05Speaker 1: But he also could have had more than one chicken
- 27:07Speaker 1: sandwich well out of a chicken.
- 27:09Speaker 2: Maybe, And it depends on how hungry you are.
- 27:11Speaker 1: How tiny he was this chicken, or how big was
- 27:14Speaker 1: this sandwich.
- 27:14Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a big old sandwich.
- 27:16Speaker 1: And I mean the interrupts go ahead.
- 27:17Speaker 2: Anyway, Thirty eight dollars is about what you're paying in
- 27:19Speaker 2: the airport for chitchicken sandwich. John this Week nineteen seventy one,
- 27:23Speaker 2: the iconic Coca Cola ad I'd like to buy the
- 27:25Speaker 2: world a coke premiered. Do you remember the song? No,
- 27:30Speaker 2: you never heard this.
- 27:31Speaker 1: I'd like to teach the world fifty one seventy one
- 27:34Speaker 1: seventy one perfect harmony.
- 27:36Speaker 2: Which is a logistical nightmare, by the way, because a
- 27:39Speaker 2: lot of people can't sing.
- 27:39Speaker 1: They can't.
- 27:40Speaker 2: I'd like to buy the world of coke, Keep it company.
- 27:43Speaker 2: That's the song I sing. Oh and it's the real
- 27:45Speaker 2: thing too. That's where the real thing came in. That's
- 27:47Speaker 2: the real thing. Oh yeah, So anyway, Uh. The radio
- 27:52Speaker 2: version was such a hit that radio listeners called in
- 27:55Speaker 2: and asked to hear the commercial Entyson coke color to
- 27:58Speaker 2: do a TV version. After the TV ad, a song
- 28:02Speaker 2: version of the jingle was recorded by the Hillside Singers,
- 28:04Speaker 2: which became a top ten hit. My jingle became a
- 28:07Speaker 2: top ten song in nineteen seventy one, Isn't that nuts?
- 28:10Speaker 2: The original song, I like to teach the World's id
- 28:13Speaker 2: like to teach the world to read, I Like to
- 28:15Speaker 2: teach the world to sing in perfect Harmony, was by
- 28:17Speaker 2: British songwriters Roger Cook and Roger Greenaway. Wow, so they anyway,
- 28:24Speaker 2: that's it's I'm trying to think of a jingle that
- 28:27Speaker 2: doesn't just right away irritate, Like there are jingles where
- 28:31Speaker 2: I just want to drive the car into an embankment.
- 28:32Speaker 2: The number one has got to be one eight hundred
- 28:36Speaker 2: Cars for Kids one eight seven one eight seven seven
- 28:40Speaker 2: Cars for Kids, KRS Cars for Kids off a cliff.
- 28:46Speaker 2: But there are some jingles they get stuck in your
- 28:48Speaker 2: head and you're like, this is crazy.
- 28:49Speaker 1: I don't eight two three hundred Empire Today.
- 28:53Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, eight hundred five eight two three hundred today
- 29:01Speaker 2: good harmony. Yeah, there's a few that are out there,
- 29:04Speaker 2: but I'm saying that they're few and far between, and
- 29:06Speaker 2: would you buy a single of it? Like, let's put
- 29:10Speaker 2: this on the radio. That's wild that it we just
- 29:12Speaker 2: I think the seventies were a dark period for music too.
- 29:15Speaker 2: That's like disco was in its heyday.
- 29:17Speaker 3: Probably there the jingles were a little more creative, Like
- 29:21Speaker 3: do you think I say the insurance commercials like liberty.
- 29:25Speaker 3: Their jingle liberty, liberty, Liberty is just say their name
- 29:28Speaker 3: over and over again.
- 29:29Speaker 2: Yeah. That guy got paid a bunch of money for
- 29:31Speaker 2: that one. Yeah.
- 29:32Speaker 1: Someone walked in one day. Yeah, and they're just like,
- 29:35Speaker 1: or if we did liberty, liberty, liberty. I love it.
- 29:39Speaker 2: I mean.
- 29:41Speaker 3: I know it, so I guess it worked. That's the
- 29:44Speaker 3: hard I hate it when they're but I don't like it.
- 29:46Speaker 1: And also it.
- 29:47Speaker 2: Worked, I know because we're talking about it now, because
- 29:49Speaker 2: they're right, we're talking about it, So it definitely worked.
- 29:52Speaker 2: It's like a little earwig that you don't want.
- 29:54Speaker 1: Know, we just gave that promotion to millions of listeners. Yeah.
- 29:58Speaker 2: John. This week nineteen forty, the famous Roswell UFO incident happened.
- 30:03Speaker 2: Mayor Jesse Marcel and the head of the Roswell Army
- 30:08Speaker 2: Counterintelligence Corps Sheridan Cavet Cavit go to William mack Brazl's
- 30:14Speaker 2: ranch and retrieve what they believe is debrieve from UFO crash.
- 30:18Speaker 2: The following day, a report would appear in the Roswell
- 30:20Speaker 2: Daily Record announcing quote RAAF captures flying saucer on ranch
- 30:25Speaker 2: in Roswell region, and that thus began the big conspiracy
- 30:29Speaker 2: of Area fifty one and Roswell. If you ever go
- 30:31Speaker 2: to Roswell, that's a town, that's a nowhere desert town,
- 30:35Speaker 2: and they it's one of those like, even if you
- 30:36Speaker 2: don't believe in the aliens, you have to like to
- 30:39Speaker 2: hang out your shingle, to sell a sandwich or to
- 30:41Speaker 2: sell gas, you have to have an alien out front
- 30:43Speaker 2: or an alien on your sticker on your door, and
- 30:46Speaker 2: you got to paint the painted green. And yeah, it's
- 30:48Speaker 2: just kind of like they're just kind of trapped by
- 30:50Speaker 2: the legacy of the conspiracy theorists there. And of course
- 30:53Speaker 2: a lot of declassified UFO stuff has come out, not
- 30:56Speaker 2: that it's aliens, but that there are unidentified flying objects
- 31:00Speaker 2: that we have encountered, you know, over the course of
- 31:03Speaker 2: the last sixty seventy years, and these are all being
- 31:05Speaker 2: declassified now, so we're like having to be like, well,
- 31:07Speaker 2: what was it? Was it at glitch? Was it? Whatever?
- 31:10Speaker 2: What do you think, John Aliens?
- 31:12Speaker 1: I don't have an opinion.
- 31:13Speaker 2: You don't you have an opinion. You're just afraid to say.
- 31:16Speaker 2: Have they got to you? You know what?
- 31:21Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 31:22Speaker 3: There's too many theories. Would it surprise me? Like I think, okay, okay.
- 31:27Speaker 2: Okay, because there's people that believe that that's why we
- 31:29Speaker 2: have AI, that this is alien this is alien technology.
- 31:34Speaker 1: Okay, that's dumb. I don't believe that.
- 31:37Speaker 3: I just believe, like, is it possible that the creator
- 31:40Speaker 3: of the universe decided in the eternity past?
- 31:45Speaker 1: Right, there's no beginning to.
- 31:47Speaker 2: This, right, But would he let them interact with us?
- 31:50Speaker 3: Do we think that he just sat in a dark
- 31:52Speaker 3: hole for all of eternity past and created one thing?
- 31:57Speaker 1: Yeah, one universe?
- 31:58Speaker 3: One whatever I find I mean, I think that again,
- 32:02Speaker 3: that's I think eternity is too big of a concept
- 32:04Speaker 3: for us to really wrap our heads around. So in
- 32:06Speaker 3: that respect, all things are possible. So but now, yes,
- 32:11Speaker 3: when you let their flying saucer come into our atmosphere,
- 32:14Speaker 3: That's where I'm like, I don't know, doesn't have to
- 32:16Speaker 3: be a.
- 32:16Speaker 2: Saucer, but some of these videos are pretty compelling as
- 32:18Speaker 2: far as like it's something's happening. Yeah, in these videos,
- 32:21Speaker 2: I think that you believe it and I don't know
- 32:24Speaker 2: what it is. I just think. And now with a I,
- 32:26Speaker 2: you're gonna be able to make videos that look like
- 32:28Speaker 2: a thing is hovering over a farmhouse and you're not
- 32:30Speaker 2: going to know whether it's really or not. Now, I'm
- 32:31Speaker 2: saying the ones that are old that you go, this
- 32:33Speaker 2: is old and it's old technology, and it looks pretty
- 32:36Speaker 2: convincing that something like darts in and then darts out
- 32:39Speaker 2: of the frame like it's so little, like a point
- 32:42Speaker 2: of light or something, and you're like, what is that.
- 32:44Speaker 3: The fact that we can no longer trust our eyes
- 32:46Speaker 3: on videos is really it's problematic. I saw some man
- 32:50Speaker 3: in the street video of the day. It was a
- 32:51Speaker 3: political thing, and they were like, hey, here's you know
- 32:53Speaker 3: what this person said in two thousand and one and
- 32:55Speaker 3: it was awful and it was real and it was
- 32:59Speaker 3: and they were like, oh, that's a yeah, and they
- 33:01Speaker 3: were like, this is long before AI existed.
- 33:03Speaker 2: But it's not that we'll believe anything it's that we
- 33:04Speaker 2: won't believe anything. That's the real problem.
- 33:06Speaker 3: Now, I won't need what I don't want to believe. Yeah, Eve,
- 33:09Speaker 3: it's my own eyes and ears tell me.
- 33:11Speaker 1: So I could just say you made it up.
- 33:12Speaker 2: Which is exactly what the aliens want, because then when
- 33:14Speaker 2: they do in Bay, we'll be like, this is all
- 33:15Speaker 2: I am. Yeah, Yeah, see what I'm saying. This is
- 33:18Speaker 2: why they gave us the technology. John this week eighteen
- 33:22Speaker 2: oh four, You're gonna know this one. Hold on. But
- 33:25Speaker 2: there were some things about this that I did not know.
- 33:26Speaker 1: Is this Hamilton?
- 33:27Speaker 2: This is US Vice President Aaron Burr mortally wounds former
- 33:32Speaker 2: Secretary of the Treasurer Alexander Hamilton and a duel current.
- 33:34Speaker 2: Do you want to start singing? Well, just said former
- 33:37Speaker 2: Secretary of the treasure Burr, while still Vice president, was
- 33:41Speaker 2: running for governor of New York State and Hamilton campaigned
- 33:43Speaker 2: against him as unworthy. Burr took offense challenged Hamilton to
- 33:46Speaker 2: a duel, in which Burr shot mortally wounded him. Hamilton
- 33:49Speaker 2: died the following day. Burr was charged with murder as
- 33:52Speaker 2: dueling was illegal, but never brought to trial. There's much debate.
- 33:55Speaker 2: This is again, this is this account of this, So
- 33:57Speaker 2: you may have your own opinions based on the musical
- 34:01Speaker 2: I'm kidding around. There's much debate over the actual sequence
- 34:05Speaker 2: of events during the duel. I want to see what
- 34:06Speaker 2: you say. Some witnesses say that Hamilton intentionally wasted his
- 34:10Speaker 2: first shot. It was later found to have hit the
- 34:12Speaker 2: trees well above Bird's head. A common practice in duels
- 34:14Speaker 2: of the day was for both parties to intentionally miss
- 34:16Speaker 2: and then call the duel over, with both parties saving
- 34:19Speaker 2: their honor. Yeah, that's how we would do it. When
- 34:22Speaker 2: you and I duel, We're just gonna shoot over each
- 34:24Speaker 2: other's heads and be like, let's suck it out. Yeah,
- 34:26Speaker 2: and everybody's gonna be like, man, they're bad shots. I
- 34:29Speaker 2: don't know how that saves your honor. Like, man, they
- 34:31Speaker 2: were ten feet from each other. How did they This
- 34:34Speaker 2: guy wants to be president, Get out of here. Others
- 34:37Speaker 2: say Hamilton didn't fire until after he was shot, his
- 34:40Speaker 2: reflexes pulling the trigger as he fell to the ground.
- 34:42Speaker 2: Hamilton had written a letter beforehand stating he did not
- 34:45Speaker 2: intend to fire, but it might have been only to
- 34:47Speaker 2: shine a bad light on Burr in case he lost
- 34:49Speaker 2: Hamilton's son had died in a duel in the same
- 34:51Speaker 2: location eighteen oh one did not know that? That's wild? Yeah,
- 34:55Speaker 2: do they talk about that in the musical? Yeah, okay,
- 34:57Speaker 2: I've only saw it one time. You saw it twenty
- 34:59Speaker 2: five times and watched it every day and knew the
- 35:01Speaker 2: songs and all of it.
- 35:02Speaker 3: Well, so that's where the most famous song from the
- 35:04Speaker 3: musical comes from, is not thrown away my shot?
- 35:08Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 35:08Speaker 1: So thrown away your shot is shooting up into the
- 35:09Speaker 1: tree right right.
- 35:11Speaker 2: So also, so what do you believe You think it
- 35:12Speaker 2: was a reflex as he fell on the ground. Do
- 35:14Speaker 2: you think he threw he shot.
- 35:15Speaker 3: To I think he shot in the air before after
- 35:19Speaker 3: after he was hit before.
- 35:20Speaker 1: I think before?
- 35:23Speaker 2: So who shot first?
- 35:24Speaker 3: Because it was a common practice. Yeah, And of course
- 35:28Speaker 3: in the play now I have to go back, and
- 35:30Speaker 3: I don't remember the history from reading the book, but
- 35:33Speaker 3: in the play he instructs his son to fire in
- 35:36Speaker 3: the air and then if the other man's honorable, he'll
- 35:38Speaker 3: do the same and whatever, and the other man's not honorable.
- 35:41Speaker 3: In real life. Another thing is how much Hamilton had practiced.
- 35:48Speaker 3: And Burr found out that Hamilton was practicing. Oh wow, okay,
- 35:51Speaker 3: and so that's why he thought he was.
- 35:53Speaker 2: He's definitely gonna shoot me for real.
- 35:55Speaker 3: But there's the idea that he got there and really
- 35:58Speaker 3: like surveyed the whole field. But then later on he
- 36:02Speaker 3: was like, maybe he was surveying the field because that's
- 36:04Speaker 3: where Sun died, kind of thing, like he's not actually
- 36:07Speaker 3: looking for the best shot against me, he's just dealing
- 36:11Speaker 3: with the fact that this is where his son died.
- 36:14Speaker 2: Hmm.
- 36:15Speaker 3: Yeah, it was a it was you know, let me
- 36:18Speaker 3: tell you something, a Aaron Burr historically, Yeah, Aaron Burr.
- 36:23Speaker 1: If there's a.
- 36:23Speaker 3: Villain, and I know the play tries to make him
- 36:27Speaker 3: like America made me your villain and all that, and
- 36:30Speaker 3: I like how Lin Manuel Miranda did what he did,
- 36:31Speaker 3: like it's great, but he was a really messed up dude.
- 36:35Speaker 3: It was dangerous for the country and like Hamilton wasn't
- 36:38Speaker 3: just who wasn't just personally against the guy, Like at
- 36:42Speaker 3: one point he tried to lead a secession movement, like
- 36:46Speaker 3: he wanted to raise an army, and like he he
- 36:48Speaker 3: he was very much in it for himself and a
- 36:50Speaker 3: dangerous personality in an age where there were a lot
- 36:55Speaker 3: of men doing unhonorable things, especially with slavery and other things.
- 36:59Speaker 3: But they at least had this like they also had
- 37:02Speaker 3: this common desire to hold this new republic together. And
- 37:06Speaker 3: Bird didn't care about that, like it was gonna be
- 37:08Speaker 3: whatever was good for Burr. It's some weird stuff with
- 37:11Speaker 3: like well, I can't say some of the other stuff,
- 37:13Speaker 3: but the dude was a womanizer on on another level.
- 37:16Speaker 3: I mean, like, uh so, anyway, Berr, interesting story. I
- 37:19Speaker 3: want to see the definitive.
- 37:22Speaker 2: Aaron b He needs his own response rap battle, he
- 37:27Speaker 2: needs his own Yeah.
- 37:29Speaker 1: Oh, Aaron Burr.
- 37:29Speaker 2: The Aaron Burber story. Aaron Burser John Finally this week
- 37:34Speaker 2: eighteen eighty nine, and this blew my mind. It was
- 37:37Speaker 2: the last US bare knuckle boxing match before they said
- 37:42Speaker 2: let's put on some gloves. We're this is getting out
- 37:44Speaker 2: of hand, I guess. Okay, of course, now we're back
- 37:46Speaker 2: with UFC and it's just straight up whatever, and we
- 37:49Speaker 2: just although they say UFC's safer than boxing than boxing
- 37:53Speaker 2: because you don't take that repetitive Okay, you're it's done.
- 37:57Speaker 2: I mean, these these rounds go three minutes, and there's
- 37:59Speaker 2: usually like three or four rounds and I five and
- 38:01Speaker 2: it's like, yeah, it's over. You knock a guy out
- 38:03Speaker 2: or you until the ref stops it and he goes,
- 38:05Speaker 2: all right, you're done. So it's like you don't have
- 38:07Speaker 2: the you know, somebody's not gonna get Parkinson's or CTE
- 38:11Speaker 2: from UFC generally, like it's a different thing.
- 38:14Speaker 1: It seems more barbaric, but it's actually.
- 38:17Speaker 2: Boxing is very barbaric because it's just like repetitive.
- 38:20Speaker 1: Yeah, it's pounding, yeah, because.
- 38:22Speaker 2: Of the gloves. Anyway, the last year's bare knuckle boxing
- 38:25Speaker 2: match happened this week eighteen eighty nine. John L. Sullivan
- 38:28Speaker 2: defends his title by knocking out Jack Kilrain in the
- 38:32Speaker 2: seventy fifth round. What for the US Heavyweight Championship?
- 38:37Speaker 1: Did he die right afterwards?
- 38:39Speaker 2: I mean, are you kidding me? How long were these rounds?
- 38:42Speaker 1: That doesn't matter how long have they're a minute apiece,
- 38:44Speaker 1: thirty seconds?
- 38:45Speaker 2: I mean whatever, and that nuts the seventy fifth round.
- 38:49Speaker 2: I think it was one of those they just go
- 38:50Speaker 2: until somebody gets knocked out. That was the rules. It
- 38:52Speaker 2: had to be, it wasn't and now we go to
- 38:54Speaker 2: the cards. I really think he won that seventy third
- 38:57Speaker 2: round viob.
- 38:58Speaker 1: I think it was just like you go until and
- 38:59Speaker 1: they want to win.
- 39:00Speaker 2: They were in the seventy fifth round and he finally
- 39:02Speaker 2: knocks the guy out. Wow, but good grief, John. I
- 39:05Speaker 2: think you and I if we were to get into
- 39:06Speaker 2: the barre knuckle bare knuckle bare knuckle boxing match, yeah,
- 39:10Speaker 2: I think three rounds. How long do you think you could? Well?
- 39:17Speaker 1: You significantly.
- 39:18Speaker 2: They say about boxing, though, is like the cardiovascular shape
- 39:22Speaker 2: you have to be in because just like I know
- 39:23Speaker 2: people that have boxed for fun. Yeah, and they were
- 39:26Speaker 2: in decent shape, yeah, in running shape, and they go
- 39:29Speaker 2: by round three you can't hold your arms up.
- 39:31Speaker 1: I can see that.
- 39:32Speaker 2: And then you notice it when boxers start getting tired,
- 39:33Speaker 2: they go, he's not protecting himself anymore. It's because this
- 39:35Speaker 2: is so hard. Like once you're.
- 39:37Speaker 1: Listen, listen, I'll put it this way.
- 39:39Speaker 3: Yeah, Jake and Abby's little baby, Miller's three months old.
- 39:43Speaker 1: In the staff meaning of the day. She got a
- 39:45Speaker 1: little fussy, so you thought, let's box stand a chance.
- 39:51Speaker 3: So I picked her up and did my girl daddy thing. Yeah,
- 39:54Speaker 3: you know, and I had her a sleep in like
- 39:55Speaker 3: thirty seconds. Yeah, And I had her up with my
- 39:58Speaker 3: arm up like this, because you know, you get little
- 40:00Speaker 3: booties like up in the air. They flat and they
- 40:02Speaker 3: don't have as much like you know, that's jest of
- 40:05Speaker 3: issues and stuff. Yeah, they ahead right. She laid them out,
- 40:08Speaker 3: laid for me forty five minutes and slept.
- 40:10Speaker 2: Uh huh.
- 40:11Speaker 1: And when we got done, I couldn't hardly raise my arm.
- 40:13Speaker 1: That's holding a baby. Run my arm up like that.
- 40:16Speaker 3: So to your point, if my arms are up actually
- 40:18Speaker 3: doing things, yeah, I.
- 40:19Speaker 1: Shouldn't tell it. That makes me look pretty bad.
- 40:22Speaker 3: But John's I've never been in better shape.
- 40:26Speaker 1: I don't think it's just what your body's not used to.
- 40:28Speaker 2: You're not ready for that title fight, dude. You've been
- 40:29Speaker 2: fighting these tomato cans and now you're now you want
- 40:33Speaker 2: to fight the champ.
- 40:34Speaker 1: Are you kidding babies and.
- 40:36Speaker 2: Fighting them babies? That's like I'm boxing this baby. It
- 40:44Speaker 2: takes like, wait a minute, hate on, let this affect
- 40:48Speaker 2: your employment here, Jake. We still love you. Yeah, we
- 40:50Speaker 2: want to have you on the team, but you need
- 40:52Speaker 2: to shut that baby. Yep, I love that baby.
- 40:55Speaker 1: She's a sweet baby.
- 40:56Speaker 2: Yeah, dude, you're right, like, uh I yeah, just sit
- 41:00Speaker 2: wrong now, I'll get up in my my foot will
- 41:02Speaker 2: be numb and like I just sat. All I did
- 41:04Speaker 2: was like tuck my foot under, like what are we doing? No, No,
- 41:07Speaker 2: we're just we're old. We're just I'm not you know.
- 41:12Speaker 3: Now, I'm still I may or may not have taken
- 41:15Speaker 3: a fork to an Oreo ice cream pie last night.
- 41:17Speaker 3: But listen, besides that, I'm not giving up all that
- 41:22Speaker 3: supplements a body can take.
- 41:24Speaker 2: We had. Listen, you had steak and eggs today for breakfast.
- 41:27Speaker 3: Well that's protein. If they wouldn't have put the biscuits
- 41:30Speaker 3: and uh hash brown casse role that come with it.
- 41:34Speaker 3: That you just steak and eggs, that's actually a perfect
- 41:37Speaker 3: If they put.
- 41:37Speaker 2: That other stuff on the plate that I ordered, well.
- 41:41Speaker 1: They asked, and it's free. What I supposed to do?
- 41:43Speaker 3: Like turn it down, Johnny. I gotta be a good steward,
- 41:46Speaker 3: not of my body, no per se, but of this meal.
- 41:50Speaker 3: So I'm sure everything's gonna work out fine.
- 41:53Speaker 2: Well, we'll see.
- 41:54Speaker 3: I hear people are living longer. Some of them are
- 41:56Speaker 3: not even dying anymore. So well, I mean, I think
- 42:00Speaker 3: we're going to be fine. They'll get around to it.
- 42:03Speaker 3: They'll get around to it. People are definitely living longer.
- 42:05Speaker 2: Are these good lives though? Are they? I think I
- 42:08Speaker 2: did read that this is the first generation it's not
- 42:11Speaker 2: smarter than the one before it, which is a concern. Yeah,
- 42:15Speaker 2: have you read that like i q's or not?
- 42:18Speaker 1: Oh how could they? I mean, I don't mean that
- 42:21Speaker 1: I think that the machines.
- 42:22Speaker 2: The machines are doing everything for us.
- 42:24Speaker 3: Is that what's doing the capacity is they're the same.
- 42:26Speaker 3: It's not that it's that I think. I think that
- 42:30Speaker 3: what the I think what tech does is is it
- 42:33Speaker 3: it one just numbs your brain into mindlessness when it's
- 42:37Speaker 3: not even that you should be learning all the time.
- 42:39Speaker 1: It's that you should be bored. That's what it is.
- 42:42Speaker 3: You're not bored all the time like we were. When
- 42:44Speaker 3: you're bored, you have to go do something or not
- 42:46Speaker 3: do something. You just watch you just watch the trees
- 42:48Speaker 3: go by out that side the window for a seven
- 42:51Speaker 3: hour beach trip and you're like, and you're bored, and
- 42:54Speaker 3: you complain. And that's what it is. Is when you
- 42:56Speaker 3: write a poem, it's good for your brain. Yeah, get
- 42:58Speaker 3: out there, y'all.
- 42:59Speaker 1: Yeah, right now, kids can have down and they don't
- 43:01Speaker 1: even know how long the trip was.
- 43:03Speaker 2: I mean, listen to the show. Listen to our.
- 43:04Speaker 1: Show, right except for this.
- 43:06Speaker 3: This is the one redeemable part for your phone.
- 43:09Speaker 2: Is this everything else?
- 43:10Speaker 1: Yes, get rid of it.
- 43:11Speaker 2: Get rid of your phone. Other than talk about.
- 43:14Speaker 3: That, use your phone to go actually to talk about
- 43:19Speaker 3: that podcast.
- 43:19Speaker 1: Yeah, it was fine.
- 43:21Speaker 2: Subscribing wherever you get your fine.
- 43:23Speaker 1: Podcasts will help you be bored too. It's it's a
- 43:26Speaker 1: oh no long show.
- 43:27Speaker 2: This show has some boring parts.
- 43:29Speaker 1: You know what.
- 43:30Speaker 3: That's what we want for you. Don't skip past the
- 43:32Speaker 3: boring parts. Yeah, when Johnny does his segments, don't skip
- 43:35Speaker 3: like you normally do.
- 43:36Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying.
- 43:37Speaker 2: Hurtful? You have that one loaded up like this at all.
- 43:43Speaker 2: We're wearing nunckle boxing with this.
- 43:44Speaker 3: Is I think you would take me out pretty fast
- 43:46Speaker 3: because you're six foot what three.
- 43:49Speaker 2: Well probably was six foot four at some point.
- 43:52Speaker 1: And I'm five nine at some time.
- 43:54Speaker 2: It's height, that's not reach. I have a longer reach too, though,
- 43:57Speaker 2: Yeah you have, And I mean it's not about that.
- 44:00Speaker 2: It's about power, and I have probably have more power too.
- 44:02Speaker 1: I would say, you outweigh me.
- 44:05Speaker 2: I'm two hundred and fifteen pounds, okay, so.
- 44:09Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, you outweigh me.
- 44:10Speaker 2: Yeah, you don't tell your way.
- 44:12Speaker 1: It's Okay, I'm about a hunt about I'm bout an.
- 44:18Speaker 3: I'm about a buck eighty nothing, one hundred nothing about
- 44:20Speaker 3: a buck eighty John's.
- 44:22Speaker 1: Rudy maybe book eighty five times?
- 44:26Speaker 2: After the Good Yeah, I talk to you after the cruise.
- 44:29Speaker 1: I'm trying, trying, people, just I'm not trying hard enough.
- 44:32Speaker 2: Oh, you're going to be great.
- 44:33Speaker 3: You know what, at some point in time, Laurene, I
- 44:35Speaker 3: have talk. You have to know what season you're in,
- 44:38Speaker 3: and you have to go. Look, there's probably five things
- 44:40Speaker 3: I can do in this season. I can't do them all.
- 44:43Speaker 3: You just can't do everything all the time, man, and
- 44:45Speaker 3: that that's actually a good thing. So I can try
- 44:47Speaker 3: to be the best dad I can to get my
- 44:49Speaker 3: kid through her season.
- 44:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 44:51Speaker 1: I can try to be the best husband I can.
- 44:53Speaker 3: I can write a couple of books on deadlines and
- 44:55Speaker 3: be grateful that I get to.
- 44:56Speaker 2: Give between being healthy and being good.
- 45:00Speaker 1: Can I go run? Can I run a couple five
- 45:02Speaker 1: k's a week? Maybe? But can I run six of
- 45:06Speaker 1: them like I used to? Probably not. I don't have
