- 0:00Get away from her you bitch. Classic.
- 0:05He was in the Amazon cry along when she was researching spiders
- 0:09right before she died. No, I thought you could go
- 0:17prostitute or go get it. I.
- 0:19Used to love doggy chow. I used to love doggy chow too.
- 0:24Tonight we nail that fart blossom.
- 0:27I'm Crystal. Wow.
- 0:30And we can build this dream together, standing strong
- 0:34forever. Nothing's going to stop us now.
- 0:38And if this world runs out of lovers, we'll still have each
- 0:41other. Nothing's going to stop us now.
- 0:44Oh whoa, I'm baby lame. Are you sure nothing's going to
- 0:51stop us? You sound a little croaky.
- 0:53Oh bitch, I am dying. Good Morning, America.
- 0:59Do you know what I am? Going to stop us now.
- 1:05This was the first time in my life I was thinking the other
- 1:08day, I've been ill for a couple of days and yesterday I was in
- 1:10bed ill and I was thinking, wow, I'm actually just delaying death
- 1:14now. That's what illness is for me.
- 1:17That's like, rather than, well, I just feel like when you're a
- 1:19bit younger, you're just like, oh, I'm, you know, I'm ill, you
- 1:22know, you get over it and I'm like, oh, no, no, I'm just, this
- 1:24could be it. Yeah, this is basically it's
- 1:26just like I'm just delaying it and the inevitable is is gonna
- 1:29hit me soon. Right.
- 1:30You're like, this is what death will feel like when it comes.
- 1:32Yeah. And it's just around that and.
- 1:34I'm putting it off a bit longer, but ultimately death is
- 1:37happening, so we're. All heading into that big wood
- 1:40chipper, welcome to Camp Classics.
- 1:44Podcasts about stupid movies. Every two weeks we take a weird
- 1:49old movie and try and figure out why the hell gay people like it.
- 1:53Yeah, that's it really. All in search of the campus of
- 1:55Camp Classics baby. Today I'm standing on business.
- 2:00Oh God, yeah, I feel stressed. So when?
- 2:02We've got so much business to get there.
- 2:04There's. Always so much.
- 2:05Well, we're in the right place. Like we're in the Camp Classics
- 2:09HQ. Canary Wharf, I.
- 2:11Can't believe I just said HQ like that.
- 2:12When was that time we saw each other?
- 2:15It's been 84 years, quite a while ago.
- 2:19Like it's been 84 years. I've got a beard now.
- 2:21I know what's happened I. Don't know.
- 2:23I don't know. How was Brazil?
- 2:26Great, I'm I'm riddled also. Yeah, yeah, yeah, in the good
- 2:31way. In all the ways, actually, yeah.
- 2:33Good, bad. It's coming out of me like lava.
- 2:36What are your top three favorite things about Brazil?
- 2:40Oh gosh, caprinias. Like a cartoon Basic.
- 2:44What am I supposed to say? The sun?
- 2:48Ipanema beach? Brazilian butts?
- 2:52How about that? Yeah, OK.
- 2:53I think yeah, they. Really know how to do a a a
- 2:57booty. Well, if you follow Crystal on
- 2:59socials, you'll see that she was wearing quite some fetching
- 3:01bejeweled bikinis as well. Cultural appropriation or
- 3:05appreciate appreciation? What do Brazilians own?
- 3:09Bejeweled bikinis. Yes they do.
- 3:11Yes, they do do Brazilians. Own a thong baby.
- 3:18Yeah, I think it was just so fucking good.
- 3:21I highly recommend it. They said come to Brazil and
- 3:24they were right. But didn't you say as well that
- 3:26like literally it's just you saw you bumped into loads of Oh my
- 3:29God, it's. Just East London on on on sea.
- 3:32So many like, oh, hey, oh, hi. That's not the way it's meant to
- 3:37be. I know, I know.
- 3:38It's just gays. We've got no, we've got no
- 3:40originality. What could you say someone
- 3:41compared it to? I found that.
- 3:43Oh, cancer. Yeah, they said gays are a
- 3:48cancer. And like, you know, a few cells
- 3:49arrive and then they just start multiplying.
- 3:51And before you know it, you're just seeing the same familiar
- 3:54tired old druggy faces at every party around the world.
- 3:58Gay, Right? And you know what?
- 4:01I love that for us. Yeah.
- 4:02Oh, that's like we're just. Going around ruining things that
- 4:06have, you know, like burning men that.
- 4:08Have ruined us that have ruined us.
- 4:10It's time for revenge. We talk about this a lot on the
- 4:12podcast. Burn it all to the ground, No.
- 4:14More gay pride, just gay revenge.
- 4:19But yeah, me too. Yeah, also, this is going to be
- 4:22gross to listen to. So sorry everyone.
- 4:24Sorry for the sniffles. Hacking up leaks.
- 4:25It's not anatomy. Like what?
- 4:30At least you've got an amazing film to talk about.
- 4:32Today isn't going to be a hard one.
- 4:34We can not get there yet. We've got so much business to
- 4:36get through. Firstly, as you may have heard
- 4:39in our last episode where I teased, we are doing a live
- 4:43event at the BFI. That sounds really good, I'm not
- 4:48going to lie. It's like.
- 4:49And it's sold out. And as part of What Flag
- 4:52Festival, which is the UK's most recognized LGBTQ plus Film
- 4:57Festival 40 years in? No big deal.
- 5:00And it's sold. Out you know what?
- 5:01And they said we need camp classics.
- 5:03They did. They said we you know what?
- 5:06This festival's missing camp. Yeah, a bit of camp.
- 5:10They were like, we are like such a recognized huge prestigious
- 5:14LGBTQ plus event. We need to find someone not
- 5:20established small. We could have brought anyone
- 5:23into this show. Paula Abdul, Janet Jackson, We
- 5:28wanted Know me. We could have brought anyone
- 5:31into this show. Yeah, and here we are.
- 5:33I know. I'm excited for it and we've got
- 5:35some guests as well. We do, yeah.
- 5:37And it's, we'd love to invite you, but it's sold out.
- 5:40It's sold out. It's sold out in seconds.
- 5:42Seconds. That just sounds so great and I
- 5:45I message you, but no, I still sit on my humble like life
- 5:49because on that sense you've got that.
- 5:51And then another event I'm doing is hold sold like 10 tickets.
- 5:53So I just love. It's just life, isn't it?
- 5:55The balance of life. Got to keep you humble.
- 5:57How dare you be successful at anything, you're a worthless
- 6:01piece of shit. Listen, I only, I only say that
- 6:06to you off my cup, give you a bit of enthusiasm for the
- 6:08episode. You're not supposed to take it
- 6:09to heart. Sorry.
- 6:11But yeah, it should be good. We're doing that at the end of
- 6:13March. I guess we're going to try to
- 6:14record it, so maybe we'll release it.
- 6:16If I guess we need to work out what we're doing as well, that's
- 6:18the other thing, we haven't actually worked out what this
- 6:21live event consists of so lol. Yeah, but that's very good bit
- 6:25of pressure. Also, we've had lots of new
- 6:28comments. Turns out on Apple podcast I was
- 6:31only reading the UK comments and there's all kinds of comments
- 6:34from around the world. As we know, no one in the UK
- 6:36listens to this podcast anyway. Yeah, so there were loads of
- 6:38comments from the US So if you've been listening in the US
- 6:41and leaving us reviews on Apple Podcasts, thank you.
- 6:43I didn't see them. No.
- 6:44Well, what? Ask them.
- 6:45Yeah, but I've got this one to read.
- 6:47This is AJ. OK?
- 6:48I love this podcast so much. It strikes the exact right
- 6:50balance between funny and substantive, and the movies Baby
- 6:52and Crystal have chosen for entry into the camp pantheon are
- 6:55all excellent or have at least made for good shows.
- 6:57I have a couple of good laughs every episode and usually end up
- 7:00with something that stays with me, whether it's about
- 7:02representation or queer joy or just a reminder of something, to
- 7:06quote non-stop to my boyfriend until he has driven sufficiently
- 7:08insane. And we of that.
- 7:11Also, I've been so many episodes in the last few days that I
- 7:14dreamed about meeting Baby and Crystal at a party and I feel
- 7:18duty bound to apologize to Crystal for how terribly my
- 7:21subconscious styled your hair in the dream.
- 7:24Very Richard Simmons for some reason.
- 7:27So we are now, we are now infiltrating our listeners
- 7:31dreams. What kind of dream was it?
- 7:33I wanted to think it would be like a wet dream, but I think it
- 7:36might be like a night terror. Well, if it was if I looked like
- 7:39Richard Simmons, it was definitely sexy.
- 7:44Anyway, thank you, AJ. That's nice.
- 7:46And there's a bunch more and maybe I'll read some of the next
- 7:49read another one. I don't have any more.
- 7:50Oh, here there's. So many.
- 7:52There are more, but I didn't write them down.
- 7:54Oh OK, we've got more suggestions for the suggestion
- 7:56set. Oh, brilliant.
- 7:58Yeah, we've written them here. Let's let's see what we've got.
- 8:01Romeo and Michelle Oh, I'm excited for Lisa Cadrew's coming
- 8:05back with the comeback. Yes.
- 8:06You don't watch the comeback, do you?
- 8:08Oh, we've had this conversation. I keep trying to watch it, it
- 8:10depresses me too much. I I cringe so hard that I can't
- 8:14watch it. Yeah, this is.
- 8:15I find it so bizarre because I bet loads of our listeners love
- 8:18the comeback as well. It's like one of my favorite
- 8:20programs ever. I've watched season, I finally
- 8:22got through season 1 and then I tried to watch.
- 8:25Season what? No, but.
- 8:26Honestly I just feel so bad for her watching it because she
- 8:29plays it so well anyway. Scream Three.
- 8:32Yeah. Jackie's back.
- 8:34Oh, I love. What's her name with, you know,
- 8:37that film? I haven't seen that.
- 8:38I've seen the trailer of it, but it's it's with, you know,
- 8:40Jennifer Lewis. You know, yeah, amazing.
- 8:42So one of the most intense people in the world?
- 8:45Yes, she went viral in that song.
- 8:47I don't want Nobody fucking with me in the streets.
- 8:53Yeah, great serial mum. That's already in the sack.
- 8:57Surely John Waters. Yeah.
- 8:59Oh, oh, someone's doing something with John Waters.
- 9:02Legend. I don't know if you've seen the
- 9:04BFI as well. You've got another BFI event.
- 9:06I've got another BFI event. I'm going to be supporting
- 9:09Peaches Christ and Mink Stoll in their show First Time.
- 9:14Tickets available for that. They go on sale on the 10th of
- 9:17March I believe. But yeah, first time he's never
- 9:20been to the UK, so there we go. So I'm just, you know, I'm Abfi
- 9:25girlie, what can I say? Drowning Mona.
- 9:28Never heard of that. Oh, that's another NEF Campbell.
- 9:30Oh God, don't even get me fucking started on Nef Campbell.
- 9:33Because obviously Scream 7 is our but.
- 9:35It's also Bette Midler. Which I haven't seen Scream 7
- 9:37yet, but obviously she's doing the rounds on every single like
- 9:42YouTube station, every single TV and that's smug face.
- 9:46Well, you'll be pleased to know we're supposed to boycott
- 9:48screens. Yeah, because they kicked off
- 9:49because. Yeah.
- 9:50Yeah. Best in show, Great film.
- 9:53Jennifer Coolidge and Beetlejuice.
- 9:55Oh great. There's some good Oh yeah,
- 9:57Catherine. That couple of those are
- 9:58Catherine O'Hara pics. Yeah, Paul, Catherine, of course
- 10:02I can't. No, no, we can RIP people when
- 10:06they're dead. We're just not allowed to
- 10:07badmouth living people. Except Neve.
- 10:10Campbell I just felt like you can't just go.
- 10:13Oh, Paul. Catherine Like, it doesn't
- 10:15really work like that, does it? RIP to such a distinguished
- 10:18actress that has done a lot for the cinematic world.
- 10:21In the Lee of a picturesque Ridge lies a small,
- 10:26unpretentious winery. Thank you for the suggestions,
- 10:29SAC suggestions. Keep them coming.
- 10:30They're going straight in our sack, and maybe we'll despunk
- 10:33the sack at the end of this. Episode oh exciting and we've
- 10:36been edging me for a while so. We've got a Patreon, as you
- 10:40know, you get a bonus episode every month.
- 10:42Last episode was on Fucking hell Amelia Perez.
- 10:48Oh, I've never seen that film. Yeah.
- 10:50Should I subscribe to the Gate John to listen to it?
- 10:53I mean, you should be subscribed anyway, frankly.
- 10:56Yeah, because actually I don't get to hear those ones.
- 10:58So I'm like. That is a fucking crazy movie.
- 11:02But yes, you should because obviously it's a weird movie
- 11:06that is enhanced by our amazing commentary.
- 11:09OK, great. Sue and I is amazing commentary.
- 11:11Oh God, let me tell you, listening to C is the right
- 11:14refreshing breather on this podcast.
- 11:17Yeah, she got some good feedback actually.
- 11:19Yeah, I'm sure there's always someone younger and hungrier
- 11:24coming down the stairs after you.
- 11:27Yeah, £4 a month. What's that?
- 11:29What can you get for £4 a month like a bottle?
- 11:31Not much these days. A bottle of poppers?
- 11:33Maybe not even. Yeah.
- 11:36So this it is a. Bar, I mean, I guess you could
- 11:38go to the supermarket, you could probably get like a really basic
- 11:41economy loaf of bread you could probably get.
- 11:43Meal deal. Yeah, but I'm thinking, I'm
- 11:45thinking we want to like sort of expand it a bit more.
- 11:47You could probably get some like hints of lentils.
- 11:49You could probably get a bag of pasta, a small bag of salt
- 11:54perhaps and that probably bringing you up to like 320.
- 11:58So you maybe could, I don't know, get.
- 12:01Alfredo. Yeah, Alfredo, there you go.
- 12:03So there is actually quite a lot you can get with 4 lbs.
- 12:05OK, but not as much as a bonus episode, no.
- 12:09Of Camp Classics. Yeah.
- 12:10Yeah, we've got loads of new Patreon members since we last
- 12:13recorded Lorcan, Ida, Laura, Sophia, Alex, Jade and Karen.
- 12:21Welcome folks, Thanks for being here.
- 12:23Yeah, oh, how lovely for you to join us.
- 12:25Thank you. Also, just on the Patreon, on
- 12:27the Patreon, someone asked, I think it was Amanda, if we could
- 12:31make all of our episodes available on Patreon.
- 12:34And so I have. So now if you listen in Patreon,
- 12:37you can listen to the main feed there too.
- 12:39So you can just listen to everything straight in that app.
- 12:42Our whole world is sitting there on a computer.
- 12:46It's in the computer. We're also on YouTube now.
- 12:49I know, are we? I didn't know that.
- 12:51Yeah, we're on YouTube now. So you can apparently loads of
- 12:53people in America listen to podcasts on YouTube.
- 12:55Oh, OK, put us on YouTube. We're on YouTube now.
- 12:58OK, great. You can listen and.
- 13:00I just, like, signed away my likeness to you, yeah.
- 13:02Yeah, yeah, I'm actually creating an AI version of you
- 13:06who will be Co hosting the podcast when you're unavailable
- 13:09and hopefully we'll just start phasing you out entirely.
- 13:11Please do, please do. It'll probably be more
- 13:14insightful listening to AI slot than me.
- 13:17I think that's all the business. We did it.
- 13:20That wasn't so bad. God.
- 13:23Baby though, before we get into today's movie, what makes a camp
- 13:27classic? We want something that unlocks
- 13:29queer joy. I want to get a tingle all over
- 13:32my body in every single hole and I want to tremor with joy.
- 13:37It needs to be stupid. It needs to have an ongoing
- 13:40legacy and something that informs queer pop culture.
- 13:43It needs to be anti mainstream underdog prop vibes that has
- 13:47been reclaimed by the F slurs God damn it.
- 13:51And this F slur is wondering what movie we're covering today.
- 13:55It's mannequin suggested by Jade.
- 14:01This is a suggestion sack pick. What is your history?
- 14:04With mannequin regret the suggestion sack straight away.
- 14:07What's your history with Mannequin?
- 14:09Well, as like a young gay, I loved it.
- 14:12I haven't seen it for a very, very long time, but yeah, it was
- 14:15one of those sort of like comfort films as a it was always
- 14:18on TV. Like obviously everyone knew the
- 14:20song. Like I think it's sort of
- 14:22aligned with Playing with Dolls as well, because obviously she's
- 14:25the mannequin and she's got different outfits and it's not
- 14:27that deep, but could. You play with dolls.
- 14:29I've hate dolls all the time until I wasn't allowed to at
- 14:32school. Mrs. Skinner stopped me from
- 14:35playing with dolls. Would be Mrs. Skinner.
- 14:37Yeah. And she like, yeah, made me go
- 14:38and play with the boys. It was fucking horrible.
- 14:41Isn't that sad? Oh, I'm sorry, that is actually.
- 14:43Really sad. I'm not even another sad thing
- 14:44as well. Like I remember I used to love
- 14:47wearing some like green lame leggings as hair as like a wig
- 14:52and I'd always wear these like green leggings on my head about
- 14:55this and then also like and I was forced to not wear those as
- 15:00a wig anymore. You get back in, you're just
- 15:02like, fucking hell, this country and what they do to little queer
- 15:05kids, I think. That still happens.
- 15:07I feel like maybe that doesn't anymore, although it might be.
- 15:10Rewarding, Yeah, but. Yeah.
- 15:11But sad, sad, sad memories. It's sort of linked.
- 15:14This film sort of links to my childhood tragedy about being,
- 15:17you know, a struggling queer kid.
- 15:19And so, you know, it's actually really interesting that you
- 15:23asked me to talk about this because it's like, you know, I'm
- 15:25looking at this from like a camp sort of adjacent place now, but
- 15:28also I'm linking it back to like a childhood.
- 15:30You only have edit control though.
- 15:32Right. I'm just like, as I'm feeling
- 15:35ill, I'm dragging everyone down with me on this episode.
- 15:39What about you, Crystal? What's your relationship with
- 15:41this movie? I can't really remember, I've
- 15:43seen it before. I watched it again this week and
- 15:45it wasn't what I remembered. Hey.
- 15:47Do you want to play a quick game or something?
- 15:48Oh sure, It's like a really really like non creative game,
- 15:52but who's better, Sarah Jessica Parker or Kim Cattrall?
- 15:59Wow, actually. Because it's like, obviously
- 16:02they can't be. You can't.
- 16:03You can't see Kim Cattrall without thinking of her enemy,
- 16:06Sarah Jessica Parker. So I just want you.
- 16:08I just want to know. Who's no, I like I like building
- 16:10them both up so that they're both at peak power to really
- 16:13continue this battle. I want it to just I want them to
- 16:16be sparring forever. They're like he man and
- 16:18Skeletor. They're opposites.
- 16:20You too. Well, obviously Sarah Jessica
- 16:23Parker with her Wiz and Tans is Skeletor.
- 16:26Oh dear. You know that's why people say
- 16:29I've got Wiz and Tans, right? Because of Sarah Jessica Parker.
- 16:32Not because they're wizened. Yeah, because they're wizened,
- 16:34but because the Daily Mail once did like a gotcha of like SJPSJP
- 16:43looked stunning at a red carpet event, but her hands she brushed
- 16:48away a golden lock with a wizened hand.
- 16:53Wrinkled, wrinkled little star. The most disgusting journalism.
- 16:58But that is so horrible. It's so horrible, but.
- 17:01But it makes complete sense when I look at your wizard as because
- 17:03wizard, wizard, they are witchy. It's my favorite thing about
- 17:09you, though, because as soon as anyone's like, oh, Crystal's so
- 17:12hot, I'm just like, look at the hands.
- 17:14Well, I'll take the compliment that was buried in there.
- 17:19Better get digging bitches deep, deep down.
- 17:22We're covering mannequin now. This movie, the idea for this
- 17:33film came when director Michael Gottlieb was walking down 5th
- 17:37Ave. and thought he saw a mannequin move in the window of
- 17:40Bergdorf Goodman. And I'd say that's where the
- 17:44ideas stopped. I don't.
- 17:46You know, yeah, yeah. He's like, I've got an idea.
- 17:49Isn't it based well or some just linked that it's based off of a?
- 17:54Greek myth. A Greek myth?
- 17:55Yeah. It is.
- 17:56It's based off Pygmalion a bit and maybe a movie called One
- 18:00Touch of Venus from 1948 which I'm not familiar with.
- 18:03It stars Andrew McCarthy, who was cast after test of his films
- 18:07shown showed that he strongly appealed to girls who were the
- 18:11target audience. Sure, Jan.
- 18:14Sure. Great.
- 18:15Yeah. But more importantly, the movie
- 18:17stars Kim Cattrall. Which, Shock horror.
- 18:21She was older than him. Yeah.
- 18:23When I was looking for trivia, that was one of the biggest
- 18:26things that came up. It's like, wow.
- 18:28Well, Kim Cattrall was six years older than her.
- 18:30Her love interest in the film, It's like, is that, is that
- 18:33where we've got to? Honestly, there is.
- 18:36There's not a lot written about this movie.
- 18:38You can't normally like we cover a movie and I'm like, oh,
- 18:41there's lots of things I can dig into for research.
- 18:44There's not a lot here. I do have some IMDb trivia for
- 18:47you. Go on to go on No as I'll.
- 18:49Get to it as it comes. Through, but it's Slim Pickens.
- 18:52But yeah, we've got Kim Cattrall.
- 18:54Welcome to the podcast, Kim Cattrall.
- 18:55No, she's been here before. Crossroads.
- 18:58Yes, crossroads. Better ray for cable window
- 19:01Latin equals only as a cameo. Yeah, but she's.
- 19:04Yeah. So now it's her full time glory.
- 19:06Yeah, if you haven't listened to the Crossroads episodes, King
- 19:10Cattrall basically just comes in and she clearly only had one day
- 19:13filming and doesn't do much. Yeah, she's just, she's just
- 19:17there to be a cow, which is really what you want Kim
- 19:20Cattrall to. Do basically and Kim Cattrall
- 19:22doesn't do it enough in my mind. No, yeah, I agree.
- 19:25It's weird watching her in this movie where she's playing like
- 19:29very against the type that we know her of.
- 19:32Yeah, she's just kind of like a fun leading lady in this, isn't?
- 19:35She Yeah. Manic Pixie dream girl.
- 19:39What? Do you not know what about a
- 19:40manic Pixie dream girl? No.
- 19:42So manic Pixie dream girl is this like trope in movies of
- 19:46like that spunky creative free spirited female lead whose only
- 19:53purpose is there to like help the struggling male lead.
- 19:57And there's many, many, many, many examples.
- 20:00Like have you seen 500 Days of Summer?
- 20:02No. Zooey Deschanel is like that,
- 20:05the classic. But like Kristen Dunst has done
- 20:07it, Natalie Portman's done. It Yeah, like now.
- 20:09You said that as a choke. Yeah, OK, I fully understand.
- 20:12Kate Winslet in Eternal Sunshine.
- 20:14You know, like I'm this zany free spirited girl and I'm here
- 20:18to like basically save the poor struggling man.
- 20:22OK, right life. Then yeah, I, I, I thought that
- 20:26watching this movie and I was like, Oh my God, I'm going to go
- 20:28on Letterbox and I'm going to write Mannequin Pixie Dream Girl
- 20:31and I am so smart. And it was obviously the first
- 20:35comment already on Letterbox. I'm like OK, I've got no
- 20:38original thoughts. No, I was the same because when
- 20:40I was watching this, I was like, Oh my God, I was like, what came
- 20:43first? This will splash because I'm
- 20:46seeing like a duality between. Anyone's ever thought?
- 20:49Yeah. And then I like looked and
- 20:50there's like lots of episodes where they're comparing them
- 20:53like bomb podcasts and things, and it's like, yeah, OK, yeah,
- 20:56great. Sounds like great bass.
- 20:58Bass level. This movie also stars Estelle
- 21:01Getty AKA Sofia from Golden Girls.
- 21:05Yep, and James Spader and. That guy from police Academy.
- 21:10As well. And that guy from police
- 21:12Academy, EW, something. Kim Cattrall apparently spent
- 21:14six weeks posing for sculptor Tanya Raguer, who captured her
- 21:21likeness. They made six mannequins based
- 21:24off of her, each with a different expression.
- 21:26Wow. That's the that's the
- 21:28scintillating kind of fact you come to this podcast for.
- 21:32It had a budget of $8 million and apparently it took
- 21:37$43,000,000 in North America. So it's a big hit, and it was a
- 21:40big enough hit that it had a sequel, Mannequin 2.
- 21:44I've never. Seen the sequel?
- 21:45Me neither. Apparently it's much worse, if
- 21:48you can believe it. That's that's an achievement,
- 21:50isn't it? Yeah, and it stars Kirstie
- 21:52Swanson, who we remember from Buffy the movie.
- 21:56Oh God, yeah, Oh God, she's. Terrible.
- 21:59Yeah. MAGA Kirsty Swanson.
- 22:01Believe it or not, this movie is not.
- 22:02Wasn't Oscar nominated though? No, I did know that.
- 22:04Diane Warren. Hard girl Diane Warren best
- 22:11original song. I mean, it is, it's one of those
- 22:13songs that like dips in and out of like I kind of feel like my
- 22:16current space of it is I kind of love the song.
- 22:19I love. But for ages I associated it
- 22:21with things like X Factor and stuff like really shit.
- 22:24Like Oh yeah, I see what you mean.
- 22:26But now it's just like, Oh my God, that.
- 22:28Slaps. Yeah, yeah, it.
- 22:30Really. Where's that woman sings.
- 22:32Let them see you with crazy. I don't do.
- 22:37About that, there's something about like film soundtracks of
- 22:40the late 80s and 90s, Dirty Dancing as well.
- 22:43You know, I've had the time in my life just like.
- 22:45Yeah, well, that's what this movie lost to.
- 22:47Oh, is that what it lost to? Oh, OK.
- 22:48Well, understandably also these these kind of faceless voices.
- 22:53I don't know what these stars stars, what they called Star
- 22:56cities, Starship Troopers. Starship Troopers Denise
- 23:00Richards. It's actually Denise Richards
- 23:01singing this. No, it's Jefferson.
- 23:06Starship or Starship. Or maybe they're just called
- 23:08Starship. You would not know what they
- 23:10look like, would you? No, but like just those.
- 23:12Name is Grace Slick. Oh, yeah.
- 23:15Hi. Grace Yeah.
- 23:16I love the way she sings. Crazy, crazy.
- 23:20Let them say we're crazy. Imagine being in the booth and
- 23:23just being like, let them say we're crazy.
- 23:25And then it's like, hold up a second.
- 23:26Yeah, no, I want to add some flavour.
- 23:28To this, I'm going to be like, hey, hey guys, what if I do?
- 23:31Let's say we're crazy, crazy, crazy.
- 23:37Go on, Grace Slick, the critics did not like this movie.
- 23:45I don't believe you. It's.
- 23:47Got 20% on Rotten Tomatoes. Savaged by the critics, Leonard
- 23:52Moulton said. Absolute rock bottom.
- 23:55Fair. Dispiriting for anyone who
- 23:58remembers what movie comedy should be.
- 24:00Oh, do you know what you've done there?
- 24:01You've accidentally read one of our Apple Podcasts.
- 24:06Silly you. Rita Kempley of The Washington
- 24:09Post called the film made by For and About Dummies.
- 24:14Yep. Rita was cooking when she wrote.
- 24:16Oh, she was and can. You imagine her sat there typing
- 24:20it like sending a life period. Send to editor.
- 24:25And then dusting her hands. Afterwards, yeah, I did find 1
- 24:29positive review. Dan McQuaid, who was writing in
- 24:31Philadelphia magazine, said truly the most uplifting film
- 24:35ever made about the city. What?
- 24:39He's just pro Philly. OK.
- 24:41Yeah. And then?
- 24:43What does it what, what about it?
- 24:45Screams Philadelphia. Honestly, but it is more
- 24:48uplifting than the film of Philadelphia.
- 24:49Yes, I guess there's that. The Rotten Tomatoes.
- 24:54I guess they're the only two films you've got.
- 24:56Yeah. You're comparing.
- 24:57You are like, thank God we've got this.
- 24:59Yeah. The other one's quite
- 25:01depressing. The Rotten Tomatoes consensus
- 25:02says Mannequin is a real dummy, outfitted with a ludicrous
- 25:06concept and a painfully earnest script that never springs to
- 25:09life despite the best efforts of an impossibly charming Kim
- 25:12Cattrall. Do we agree?
- 25:14We'll. Find out best efforts.
- 25:16And then the last thing I want to say about the context.
- 25:18You know the tagline of this movie.
- 25:20No, some guys have all the luck. OK.
- 25:26What does that mean? Because what is what is the
- 25:29fetish of fucking mannequins? I don't know but.
- 25:32It's out there. Yeah, it is.
- 25:34It's a real fetish. I actually think it, yes, 100%.
- 25:37I can't pronounce it. I guess everything's a fetish,
- 25:40really. It is, but then it led me to
- 25:42watching some mannequin porn earlier before just to see how
- 25:46different it was. Now is that different to fucking
- 25:49like a sex doll? I think they're of the same
- 25:52family. OK, yeah.
- 25:55I, you know, maybe unfairly all grouped together under the same
- 25:59title. Right.
- 25:59Yeah, yeah, I bet some people are really like, no, I'm only
- 26:03into mannequins. It's our God sake, a gamut.
- 26:07I feel it's one of those things you have to just say with like
- 26:10pure conviction, isn't it? So it's agomatophilia,
- 26:14agomatophilia, agomatophilia. Agomatophilia.
- 26:17Agomatophilia. In is a form of object sexuality
- 26:21involving sexual attractions to statues, dolls, or mannequins.
- 26:25It sounds like I could do again. Well, this is one of my IMDb
- 26:33trivia things. Don't know why someone bothered
- 26:36to write this. Two things director Michael
- 26:39Gottlieb took inspiration from his teenage years working in a
- 26:42Macy's talk room. He was particularly inspired by
- 26:44his own experiences with mannequins behind locked doors.
- 26:48Oh wow. OK.
- 26:50I don't think that's true. I couldn't, you know, Fact Check
- 26:53that, but someone took the time to write it.
- 26:55Also, this is another bit of trivia on IMDBLSD Researcher
- 26:59Jerry Kelly convinced himself that this movie was real.
- 27:02He was arrested multiple times for speaking and even at times
- 27:05groping and undressing mannequins at several different
- 27:07retail shops. OK.
- 27:09OK. Love.
- 27:10Great, someone took the time to write that on the Internet.
- 27:14Agadouphilia. I can't.
- 27:17Remember what it's called? Agamatophilia.
- 27:20Agamatophilia. No, God damn it, I'm going to do
- 27:25it. Agamatophilia.
- 27:27Love it? Well.
- 27:29If you are into that, we are. Going to This is the episode for
- 27:31Go. In.
- 27:33So, opening scene, Ancient Egypt.
- 27:36And we're really getting a vibe of how much research or depth
- 27:41has gone into the creation of this movie because even at the
- 27:43beginning, they are going a really long time ago.
- 27:46Yeah, they're not even bothering to give it.
- 27:48No, it's right before lunch and famous Egyptian Kim Cattrall is
- 27:55a mummy is a mummy. She is hot, dressed up as a
- 27:58mummy. In an escape room it looks like
- 28:01the set is so cheap. True.
- 28:02In an escape room. Yeah, it's very.
- 28:06It's. Like follow the high, that's the
- 28:07hieroglyphics on the wall. But.
- 28:09Crystal Maze. It's very Crystal Maze.
- 28:13She's hiding from her arranged marriage and overbearing mother.
- 28:18Who is decked out in the finest Smithies costume I've seen?
- 28:22The pair of them, it's like you know what we need to make this
- 28:25authentic. We're going to hire 2 white
- 28:27ladies, but it's but a cobwebs. Yeah.
- 28:30She doesn't want to get married, though, because she wants to be
- 28:32an inventor and she prays to the gods to help her.
- 28:35Yeah. And like, why did they like the
- 28:37inventing? We'll get to the inventor story.
- 28:40Like, but it's so unnecessary and it really doesn't play out
- 28:43at all. But sure.
- 28:45OK. Yeah.
- 28:46But then. But then they've got, you know,
- 28:47like a very, like clever take on like, well, you know, if I, if
- 28:52you know that if I thought women would be able to achieve
- 28:54anything, then of course I'd fight for you.
- 28:55That's what the mother says to her.
- 28:58Very like knowing Rye. Like women?
- 29:00Yeah, well, let's see what happens with that.
- 29:03I bet she's going to achieve something really good in her
- 29:05life. Like.
- 29:08Like a window. The rules of feminism.
- 29:11Aim high, girls. Fucking hell.
- 29:14Anyway, she pleads to the gods to save her, and she vanishes
- 29:18before her mother's eyes. Then we get a cartoon montage.
- 29:22Where she's a cat. Where she's now a woman of
- 29:24colour slash cat, because they were like, we haven't cast an
- 29:28Egyptian woman for this role, so now we'll make her one in this
- 29:32cartoon. It's quite weird.
- 29:34Yeah, I do love like this era. They used to love an animation.
- 29:38Oh. I know I do.
- 29:38Like that and I really there's something I've always enjoyed.
- 29:40Animated montage intro Great. And it.
- 29:44The Belinda Carlisle song. Yeah.
- 29:45And you're also like when you're watching it, like, what does
- 29:48this mean? And actually, it is kind of the
- 29:50narrative of her tale, isn't it? Yeah.
- 29:52Yeah. That this this spirit that she
- 29:55is now has been floating around history.
- 29:57Yeah. Cavorting meeting famous for.
- 29:59Columbus, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Latoya, Suzanne,
- 30:05you name it. A jobless window dresser.
- 30:09All they're all equally relevant, but yeah, it's cute
- 30:12and it's AI like this song. I didn't know it before Linda
- 30:15Carlisle song. Then we're in 1987 Philadelphia,
- 30:19and Jonathan Switcher is a sculptor.
- 30:22Is he? Yeah.
- 30:25This man says he's an artist. I don't know.
- 30:27He's working at a mannequin warehouse and he finishes a
- 30:31single female mannequin that he considers A masterpiece.
- 30:34Now, are we supposed to understand that he has sculpted
- 30:36this mannequin by hand because or is he just put arms?
- 30:40Because that's it's actually like, it's like there's a bunch
- 30:42of arms hanging up everywhere. Arms and legs.
- 30:44And you can literally just, I guess it's like pick a Mick to
- 30:47make whatever you want. But yeah, apparently he's a
- 30:49sculptor that's done that one, actually.
- 30:51And also, why is it taking him that long?
- 30:53I will say she has incredible tits.
- 30:57Great, but it's such an unnecessary detail to the tits.
- 31:00They've got like a pinkiness to the nipples.
- 31:03Breasts, Mama, they're called breasts.
- 31:07I wasn't looking at that. I was actually focused on her
- 31:09face and she is beat. Beat down Mama I love.
- 31:14This 80s makeup, it makes everybody look 45.
- 31:18Yeah, it's so good. That's the thing I love about
- 31:22these films as well, because you're, you look at how old Kim
- 31:25Cattrall was and she was like 30, wasn't she?
- 31:27But it's like she looks older than she looked in Sex in the
- 31:30City. It's incredible.
- 31:31Yeah, wonderful. But yeah.
- 31:32So he's an artist. I I don't know, I think his
- 31:35artistry is limited to combining arms and legs.
- 31:38And also as well we're we're meeting him and it's he's saying
- 31:42he's built this thing, but he's still putting it together like.
- 31:45He's done nothing. He's choosing arms and then oh,
- 31:47oh, he's wrong. Sex, yeah, but oh.
- 31:50God, imagine that. So I mean in this factory to the
- 31:53like, you know, he said wrong sex.
- 31:55You know, correct me if I'm wrong.
- 31:56People that are into mannequins, but I didn't realize like
- 32:00mannequins had like genitalia. I thought they were all like
- 32:02barbied. You're right.
- 32:04So as that, as in this mannequin factory, is there like one with
- 32:06a big fuck fucking Dick and he's like, oh, wrong sex on that.
- 32:11Do you know what I mean? Well he does then end up having
- 32:15sex with the mannequin, so maybe it's just that the lady ones
- 32:18have holes. Listen, I have a mannequin in my
- 32:20living room. You do.
- 32:21It's. A child?
- 32:22Oh God, no, no, no. But there's nothing, right?
- 32:25She has a heeled foot which I find very bizarre.
- 32:29So it's it's like Barbie. Yeah.
- 32:31So yeah, what is he doing? This fucking crazy man.
- 32:36He gets fired from this job because he's spending too.
- 32:39Much time. What is he doing?
- 32:41They're like, you work in a mannequin factory.
- 32:42We need to make some mannequins and he's like, I can make one
- 32:45of. Them I'm actually a sculptor.
- 32:47Yeah, he's fucking mental. He's.
- 32:48And then it makes you realise, actually, if you watch this
- 32:50entire film through the gaze that this is a man who's
- 32:53psychotic horror movie. Yeah.
- 32:55Then actually it's just it could be a wonderful art house film.
- 32:59Yeah, remake it, but like I want to see the creepy horror version
- 33:02of this for sure. Yeah, no wonder he's sacked.
- 33:04I'm a sculptor. It's like your job is to put
- 33:06arms on a mannequin. Please grow up.
- 33:09But this one's special. Get out of here.
- 33:12I need to fuck her. Yeah.
- 33:14So he gets fired and then he takes a number of odd jobs.
- 33:16Oh that was hilarious. Oh God, what a hilarious
- 33:18montage. I mean the man can't even make a
- 33:21pizza. I did like though, that I think
- 33:23he kills a small boy. There's like a boy who wants a
- 33:27balloon and he wants the big balloon and the the boy just
- 33:29flies off. Yes, I think that boy just.
- 33:32Died later. We also find out that when he
- 33:34worked in a restaurant, it basically set on fire.
- 33:36That's true. Yeah, and he, he's an arsonist
- 33:39again. He's he's.
- 33:40Murdering. Children dangerous.
- 33:43Falling in love with inanimate objects, killing small children
- 33:46and setting fire at a restaurant?
- 33:47You love it. He's got a girlfriend, Roxy.
- 33:49Who I kind of love. Actually, I love Roxy.
- 33:52I'm into Do you know what I like about Roxy?
- 33:53She's got standards. Yeah.
- 33:55Yeah, exactly. And we're meant to like, vilify
- 33:57her because she's like, this is my problem with these kind of
- 34:00films. I struggle when obviously we're
- 34:02meant to follow a straight man narrative, right?
- 34:06And we're meant to like, feel sorry for him and like instantly
- 34:09I'm switching off. Because yeah, no, I don't care,
- 34:12don't care. So, So what?
- 34:13We meet this psycho who has been moulding, supposedly moulding
- 34:18and sculpting A mannequin, which doesn't happen.
- 34:21He's like, let children fly off. He's like, you literally can't
- 34:25do anything. And his girlfriend is like, eye
- 34:27rolling this and being like, oh, for fuck's sake, you lose her.
- 34:30Yeah, and we're meant to look at her as a villain all while she's
- 34:33got the Countius makeup and, like, shoulder pads on.
- 34:35And I meant to hate this woman. I'm sorry you could never make
- 34:38how feminism works. No, you could never make me hate
- 34:41Roxy I. Mean, that's just, like, the
- 34:43rules of feminism. And she was in.
- 34:46She's collaborated with Prince on music.
- 34:49Yeah. All right.
- 34:49I was like, she's cool. Right.
- 34:51She apparently complained about doing this movie because they
- 34:53made her look too severe compared to Kim Cattrall, who
- 34:56got the blowout. And she didn't like having this,
- 34:58the slicked back hair. But she didn't know that 40
- 35:01years later there'd be two gays being like, yes, serve queen.
- 35:05Well, this is back that, but, you know, Sue said this in the
- 35:08last episode that I was listening to about you can't
- 35:11have two blonde women in a film. And this is this is right.
- 35:14Yeah. Also, how what did you do to her
- 35:17when she said that she couldn't tell the difference between Uma
- 35:19Thurman and Michelle? Pfeiffer, I'm still thinking.
- 35:21I was thinking. I was listening.
- 35:23To up today thinking about. This.
- 35:25I was listening to it, walking my dog, and I suddenly felt
- 35:28really fucking angry. I was like, what is this person?
- 35:31What is she doing on our podcast saying filth like that?
- 35:35All of the good work we put in for the last year and that's the
- 35:38shit she's peddling? Fuck you, Sue gives a fuck.
- 35:41They are sorry, two strikingly beautiful blonde women, yes, who
- 35:47are completely you like. Your friend has big old jiggly
- 35:51tits. One is Poison Ivy and one is
- 35:54cat. Yes, it's not difficult.
- 35:57Oh God, thank you. OK, I'm really glad that we
- 36:00managed to talk. Yeah, to talk about that.
- 36:02I couldn't let her have it on. It no, just disgusting.
- 36:05OK. Can you tell we're filling
- 36:07people? Can you tell this is fluffing
- 36:09this episode? OK so he gets dumped.
- 36:12We love Roxy. Dumping someone by telling them
- 36:15they need to get psychiatric help is camp.
- 36:19We've all been. There.
- 36:20Yeah, we've all been there. Then his motorcycle breaks down
- 36:22in the rain. So Switcher and.
- 36:25Switcher. He has another episode where
- 36:27he's staring at her in the the window.
- 36:29Oh my God, it's the mannequin that I made.
- 36:33You did not make her. You put arms on something that
- 36:37probably was sculpted in China. Yeah, and how many of there are
- 36:40there around the? World anyway, she's there and he
- 36:43says to her in the window that she's the first work that made
- 36:46him feel like a true artist and. You know, sorry, I'll just keep
- 36:50on thinking this from like, if this was a really fucked up, you
- 36:52know, if it was like an A-24, he'd be like wanking at her in
- 36:55the rain, wouldn't he? And then she'd probably, and
- 36:59then she'd probably be going, yeah, that's it.
- 37:04OK, anyway, sure. Sure.
- 37:06Jen, you're an artist. The next morning, he is walking
- 37:10past the store again, and he sees Claire Timken, Estelle
- 37:14Getty, who's about to be killed by her own shop sign because
- 37:18she's the store owner. He saves her and it's.
- 37:21Oh, my God. Hi, Jinx.
- 37:22He's swinging around on that sign.
- 37:24You can really see where they spent their budget.
- 37:26It's such a great use of special effect.
- 37:29It's just. And all of the other things I
- 37:32could do. And it's like, yeah.
- 37:34That and the car chase, same scene.
- 37:35And then and then she's and she's like, hey, let me hire you
- 37:39and. He's swinging around on the
- 37:40side. I mean, it's a broad style of
- 37:43comedy that this movie is going for, Kind of slapsticky
- 37:46screwball I hate. It Yeah, I hate it so much.
- 37:50I hate it. It's such low hanging fruit,
- 37:52really. And also, do you know what I
- 37:54love? Well, maybe I don't.
- 37:55I thought I love the style Gethi and like Golden Girls.
- 37:58Yeah, she's terrible. Like she cannot act.
- 38:01She's trying so hard not to slip into that Sicilian accent, isn't
- 38:05she? And.
- 38:05It's just like, no, you need to accept who you are.
- 38:08Where does this fall in Like Golden When?
- 38:11When is Golden girls? I think it's probably mid Golden
- 38:13Girls. So I think she's, you know,
- 38:15she's become a breakout star on that.
- 38:17And then she's now be given some opportunities and it's like.
- 38:20Picture it Philadelphia in 1987. Anyway, Claire is grateful to
- 38:25him and gives him a job. We meet Mr. Richards, played by
- 38:29James Spader. He is secretly paid by Illustra,
- 38:33the rival department store. Now that's the department store
- 38:35I want to. Go Oh my God, it.
- 38:36Is amazing, yeah. I'm like, imagine shopping
- 38:40there. Everything's neon blue.
- 38:42Everywhere but pre COVID slash curtains so like really cool.
- 38:47It was a futurism. There was a time when like those
- 38:49kind of like tinsel curtains you couldn't get anywhere.
- 38:51Like and in the 80s. Oh they pop with real neon.
- 38:56It's so nice. I just want to be there
- 38:59watching. Yeah, And like, I'm just being
- 39:01there for the whole day being like, oh, I went and like this
- 39:04person a makeup counter. Yeah, just wandering around
- 39:06meeting all of the different ladies at all the makeup
- 39:08channels. Like an electric neon ion BA and
- 39:10then. And I got to try on.
- 39:13I wonder what the fragrance would be.
- 39:17Like Jerry Hall or something. Yeah, for men.
- 39:22So yeah, Richard is played by Lustra.
- 39:24He's trying to sabotage prints and company so it can be bought.
- 39:27We also meet suspicious and bigoted security guard Captain
- 39:30Felix Maxwell. He's like, oh, so the Mary has a
- 39:35new assistant. He doesn't like gay.
- 39:37People. No.
- 39:37Yeah, he does these days, though.
- 39:39Terrible. And then we also meet flamboyant
- 39:42window dresser Hollywood Montrose, played by Meshach
- 39:46Taylor. Right.
- 39:49Right, how we Let's talk about Hollywood.
- 39:51Apparently this man was the only straight man to audition for
- 39:55this role. This is a heterosexual man
- 39:58playing this. Because my my boyfriend loves
- 40:00Hollywood right? And and quotes Hollywood like
- 40:03and I was telling him that we were doing this episode and then
- 40:07I also told him in my research that he was straight and the way
- 40:11he audibly gasped and nearly like fell over the sofa because
- 40:15he always he always just believed it was like.
- 40:17Yeah, a super. Capative portrayal like real.
- 40:21It was his lived experience. Yeah, because also I think as
- 40:24well you can kind of you're like, oh God, how fucking
- 40:27fabulous. This like flamboyant black guy
- 40:31who is just like, owning it. And you're like, yeah, fucking
- 40:33how Even though it is like cliche trophy camp, you're like,
- 40:36brilliant. Yeah, until you find out he's
- 40:38straight. And it's like, oh God.
- 40:40Because he kind of carries the movie.
- 40:42Whatever, I'm going to snip so knowing he's straight out of my
- 40:46brain. Because, yeah, otherwise you
- 40:48can't enjoy it at all. Yeah, yeah.
- 40:50And I'm just going to enjoy this queer representation.
- 40:53Yeah, right. Because he is fabulous.
- 40:56He's. Fabulous and the.
- 40:57Movie loves him, yeah. The movie loves him.
- 40:59The movie's on his side. He has real heart.
- 41:01Yeah, the the he experiences bigotry and those bigots are
- 41:05punished. The movie likes this game.
- 41:07He's creative. He's worried about weight.
- 41:10Yeah, I mean. He wears those sunglasses that
- 41:14what's her face wears in overboard.
- 41:16What's her face Goldie Hawn with?
- 41:18The Goldie Hawn wears fucking hell.
- 41:20Right. Sue gives a fuck.
- 41:21Calm down. Goldie Hawn wears an overboard.
- 41:24He drives a pink Cadillac with a bad girl on it.
- 41:27Sorry, it's not goals, right? Rihanna vibes.
- 41:31He. Yeah.
- 41:32Incredible. Incredible.
- 41:34Straight. Straight.
- 41:35OK, so then Switcher is putting together a window display and
- 41:40the mannequin he made. Oh, my God.
- 41:42It comes to life. Can you believe it?
- 41:45Can you believe it? It's Kim Cattrall.
- 41:46It's Kim Cattrall, everyone. She says she's existed for
- 41:49centuries as a muse, sometimes inhabiting the works of an
- 41:52artist she admires and inspires. And that is that's all she says,
- 41:56because she just goes, goes it's a long story and then proceeds
- 41:59to not tell a long story at all. Just that's it.
- 42:02Like. And I think this is where.
- 42:04Yeah. So here's where we're supposed
- 42:05to understand that, Jonathan. Putting arms on a prefab body is
- 42:13the same as. Michelangelo.
- 42:15Michelangelo. Leonardo da Vinci.
- 42:17Who she outed? Yeah.
- 42:20Was he? Was he out?
- 42:22But also what doesn't make sense to me.
- 42:23So OK, so she was the Mona Lisa because Leonardo painted it and
- 42:27then she came to life as the Mona Lisa.
- 42:29Does that mean she was David? And how does she fit into the
- 42:34Michelangelo story? I don't know, Doesn't make sense
- 42:36right? I think.
- 42:38I think maybe she is lying. Doesn't exist.
- 42:44And then also how? What is Christopher?
- 42:45Christopher Clumps isn't an artist, he's a he's a slave
- 42:50poacher. Like he never questioned it.
- 42:53He never, he never wants to find out more about this.
- 42:56It's also never explained anymore.
- 42:58You know, there's not like normally in these kind of films
- 43:00it would be like, oh, you know, the ex-boyfriend from back in
- 43:05Egyptian times has found the portal.
- 43:07She went in and how dare she leave me.
- 43:09So I'm going to go to the modern day to get her back.
- 43:11There's normally that kind of storyline.
- 43:13No, not on this. Wait, are you saying that this
- 43:16movie about a mannequin that comes to life has a like a
- 43:18poorly thinly written female lead without much back story?
- 43:23I am implying that, yeah. Wow, bold.
- 43:26OK, so. Yeah you're right though, she
- 43:29doesn't have that much of a story, does she?
- 43:30I'm just looking at one of my notes.
- 43:32She has zero agency lol. Yeah, she's really she's just
- 43:36there to help Jonathan live his dreams.
- 43:38And wear nice clothes. Yeah, she also explains that the
- 43:42gods allow her life when she and Jonathan are unobserved, so no
- 43:46one else can see her. Whenever they see her, she goes
- 43:48back to a mannequin. Again, so basically she's just
- 43:51this pleasure object for him, solely for his gaze and no one
- 43:55else's. Yeah, yeah, she's a sex doll.
- 43:59And years of time travelling, that's what it brought her to.
- 44:03Honestly, that's and she doesn't seem to want anything more than
- 44:05that. It's like like she's been, she's
- 44:08basically implied that she's been like around fuck boys
- 44:11throughout time, like thousands of years of fuck boys and she's
- 44:14still like, wow, this guy, this guy who can't even make a
- 44:19fucking pizza, who murders children.
- 44:22Oh, he's the one. Yeah, this is that.
- 44:25So with Emmy's help, Switcher's window display is a massive
- 44:29success. Oh.
- 44:34Oh, to live in a time when some tennis rackets hanging from the
- 44:39ceiling could draw a crowd. Hey, have you seen the window
- 44:43dressing at the store? Almost the road.
- 44:46Imagine. My favorite bit is just watching
- 44:49the extras act in this scene because they're all clearly
- 44:52don't know what they're saying, but they're all like, go wow,
- 44:54wow, you seen this, though? Hey, look at that over there.
- 44:58Look. Wow.
- 44:59Hey everybody, get over here. They all say nothing but all
- 45:03going mad over the displays and clapping.
- 45:06Everybody clapped. I.
- 45:07Also love this as well because like, obviously this kooky
- 45:10writer and director have come up with this crazy film concept and
- 45:15clearly it's got greenlit, blah, blah, blah, to the point where
- 45:17they've had to like get the art team on board.
- 45:20Right, guys, there we go. You're going to make some like
- 45:23crazily successful window dressing with mannequins and
- 45:28this is going to be like the bit, OK, what are you doing?
- 45:30And then it's like these people being like, I guess we'll put
- 45:33them on a cycle like. What if yeah, mannequins were on
- 45:37bikes? It's like, this is it?
- 45:40That's like, whoa, whoa, yeah, yeah.
- 45:43I just. I love how underwhelming.
- 45:45Oh. God, it is grim.
- 45:47Just hire someone with some talent to do this in the movie.
- 45:50It's crazy. Anyway, now Switcher is in
- 45:52charge of visual merchandising and so him and Emmy continue
- 45:56working on displays and I think this is where we get the longest
- 45:59montage that has ever existed in.
- 46:01Cinema history normally love a montage.
- 46:03Yeah. Oh, it's boring, isn't it?
- 46:05It's just it's the entire song. The song is Do You Dream About
- 46:09Me? And yeah, it's the entire song.
- 46:11And it's just them just doing lots of fun little dress up
- 46:14moments. They're like Gangster and just
- 46:18like Yacht and oh, I like the look she's got where she's in
- 46:23the kind of. Hunk.
- 46:25Wiki Yeah, Tina Turner. I also watched this and I was
- 46:29thinking, oh God, I feel sorry for people like Kim Cottrell
- 46:31because, you know, we we do like mock Christina Aguilera,
- 46:34etcetera for wearing wigs in movies to just have like mousy
- 46:38flat ace 80s hair that you can kind of boof on a little bit.
- 46:41You. I am missing a wig.
- 46:43I want more wigs, more a mannequin.
- 46:45Yeah, she should be bald. And then and let me tell you
- 46:49that wig, when she is a mannequin, her wig on the
- 46:53mannequin is way more impressive than Kim Cattralls hair.
- 46:56So Kim Cattrall should be wearing that wig.
- 46:58More wigs. More wigs, You're absolutely.
- 47:00Right, because I came alive when I saw the punk wig.
- 47:02The. Punk wig is so good.
- 47:04The punk wig is so good. Also, Kim Cattrall is no
- 47:08stranger to a wig. I watched this interview she
- 47:10gave in the 90s where she's talking about this movie and
- 47:13about I guess she was on Star Trek too and.
- 47:15She's wearing like a little black.
- 47:16Yeah, a little black like Cleopatra, Bob, but.
- 47:19Surely that should be part of the fun of her film like this.
- 47:21It's like loads of different wigs.
- 47:23Oh, now I'm a blonde, now my redhead.
- 47:25Give us the depth we need. Yeah, when will you wear wigs?
- 47:30I also loved, I mean, I'm, you know, fur coat and just
- 47:33knickers. Yeah, fabulous.
- 47:35This at this point, I was, I wrote here.
- 47:36Are they fucking? I think they're not fucking yet.
- 47:40No. But it's kind of.
- 47:42This is like the foreplay. This is such a horny movie that
- 47:45I think they don't actually fuck till later.
- 47:47This movie is very sex. It's got sex on the brain.
- 47:50Yeah, there's always, there's all these horny, like, extras
- 47:53and like there's like the the guy who works at Illustra who's
- 47:56trying to sleep with Roxy. He's like a fucking perv.
- 47:59Oh yeah. Because he's just like, touched
- 48:01me. Yeah.
- 48:02Yeah, I've. I've got something in your size,
- 48:04Roxy. Oh.
- 48:07Over several weeks, they create several popular displays,
- 48:10attracting new business while deepening their relationship.
- 48:15A Lester tries to poach Jonathan, but he doesn't want to
- 48:18work there. There's a weird fight scene with
- 48:21Switcher and the security guard. It's like what?
- 48:24Yeah, like. Why is the security guard trying
- 48:26to? He literally murdered the.
- 48:29Employee. He's probably closet and he
- 48:32probably wants a piece of his ass that makes sense and he's
- 48:34jealous of that man. Well, he does say how he wants
- 48:37to strips. He wants to give him a strip
- 48:38search. And also, Oh my God, it's and
- 48:40there's also a bit, oh God, I hate these strokes.
- 48:43You see him where he's in that department store and he sees a
- 48:45pair of women's knickers, but kind of goes to them and looks
- 48:50at them in a sort of cross dressing kind of way, not in a
- 48:53like. So there's like, oh God, that's
- 48:56boring, isn't it? Right Claire fires Felix and
- 49:02Richard's and makes Jonathan the store's youngest vice president
- 49:08because he has increased sales so much through his amazing
- 49:12window displays. We realize now, wow, this is
- 49:16like some high stakes storytelling.
- 49:18Yeah, Battle of the department stores.
- 49:20Illustrious Sales are down 86% in several days because of
- 49:25Amazing Windows. All of the things you could do
- 49:28with the fucking mannequin. And it's like, no, we're just
- 49:30staying in the department store. Well, you know what you can do
- 49:33with Mannequin? What's that?
- 49:34Fuck it. Oh God.
- 49:38Because everyone at the store now thinks that he's fucking a
- 49:43mannequin and they're fine with it.
- 49:45It's helping the sales in their store like.
- 49:47Whatever it takes to get Prince and company back on track.
- 49:51If he needs to have sex with that mannequin in a store room
- 49:53in front of all of us, that's fine.
- 49:56Get your fucking ass up and work because he's making sick window
- 50:00displays. They are.
- 50:01They are like, I'll tell you what.
- 50:04Pushing artistic bounds. High streets would not be dead
- 50:07if we had visual merchandisers like him.
- 50:09Like, I'm sorry, when I walk down Oxford Street I don't see
- 50:12anything like that. Yeah, it's a dearth of glamour.
- 50:16You know what? It's a famine of beauty.
- 50:18One night, Jonathan takes Emmy through the city on his
- 50:20motorcycle. Which is quite funny, yeah.
- 50:23He's just driving around with a mannequin on his back.
- 50:26There's a big chase scene, which feels incredibly unnecessary.
- 50:30Again, Felix. The is just really trying to
- 50:32kill him. Yeah, just murder him.
- 50:34He's smashing into cars. They get stuck in an alley, then
- 50:38they go back to the store and this is where they fuck.
- 50:40I think for the first time. Yeah, OK.
- 50:42And they, yeah, they properly go.
- 50:43For it. And like a hammock.
- 50:45Yeah, in a tent under some fur coats.
- 50:47Also like these are some kinky bastards, why are they not just
- 50:50going to the bedroom department? You're right.
- 50:51I'm sorry. I know I'm very vanilla.
- 50:53By saying that it's just alright going to bed and fuck.
- 50:57And then it wake, they wake up and it's like a live art
- 50:59installation. And again, the extras are loving
- 51:01it, aren't they? They're clapping.
- 51:02Yeah, the extras love it. They're like, whoa, yeah.
- 51:07Well, I think, I think these people work.
- 51:09So they all work at the department store.
- 51:11And I think they've just been told to validate anything this
- 51:14man does. And they're like, well, we've
- 51:16come into work and this man's naked under a bunch of fur
- 51:18coats. You're a genius, Sir.
- 51:22You're a genius. But yeah, he finds out that
- 51:25overnight, after they've had sex, Illustra has come in and
- 51:28stolen all the female mannequins.
- 51:30He again, it's like, wow, the only way that we can combat
- 51:34these is they're incredible mannequins.
- 51:36It's like. Everyone making this movie was
- 51:38on drugs. Yes, yes.
- 51:40That everyone was just on coke and didn't give a shit.
- 51:44But anyway, Jonathan goes to Illustra and this is where we
- 51:46have our final showdown slash chase scene.
- 51:49Oh, and this is where we see Hollywood's pink convertible.
- 51:52Roxy loads all of the stolen mannequins into the stores.
- 51:56Large trash chipper thing. Yeah, she's gets knocked out by
- 52:01a bunch of garbage somehow. Yeah.
- 52:03And I, I really appreciate this because there's like maybe four
- 52:06or five mannequins that are on the conveyor belt and you see
- 52:10pretty instantly like 2 get like really.
- 52:14Chipped. But then you go back and it's
- 52:16like there's still like four or five on there and it's going up
- 52:21and it's like, and then the Kim Cattrall 1 is sort of so close
- 52:24to the edge until it cuts back in the other, oh, we're at the
- 52:27bottom again now. It's like the slowest descent.
- 52:29We're really building the stakes here.
- 52:31Yeah, Roxy gets covered in garbage and is like knocked out,
- 52:35Yeah. Bless her.
- 52:36What single cardboard box takes her out?
- 52:38But yeah, Hollywood holds everyone at Bay with a fire
- 52:41hose. Let me show you what a real man
- 52:44looks like. Sure, Yeah.
- 52:46And then Jonathan jumps onto the compactor conveyor belt and he
- 52:49manages to. Really calm and really can't
- 52:52lift her up. No, she's.
- 52:53A fucking mannequin. Yeah, and of all the films, you
- 52:55just think that would be the given, but it's actually the the
- 52:59store worker. Oh, yeah, He watches us for
- 53:01ages. He watches Jonathan about to get
- 53:04crushed to death for ages. And then eventually he's like,
- 53:06oh, let me turn off the power, actually.
- 53:09And then she's brought out. Yeah, and because he saves her
- 53:12and has proven his true love, she comes to life permanently.
- 53:17And then our actual hero with the piece, the guy who's
- 53:20cleaning, he's actually a sex pest, isn't he?
- 53:23Because then he's like, oh, I want a mannequin that will come
- 53:27to life as well. I want a hot woman fuck doll
- 53:29that comes to life. I'm going to look for one.
- 53:32And then finds the unconscious body of our dear friend Roxy and
- 53:35then starts kissing her. She wakes up and is like,
- 53:38obviously, obviously, get the fuck off of me.
- 53:42Like who cares if she's like the baddie of the show, get the fuck
- 53:45off of me. No, he carries on and she's like
- 53:47get off of me, get off of me. Meanwhile, Kim Cattrall and
- 53:50another boy are like, laughing and walking past the being like,
- 53:53Oh well, she's actually raped. Justice for Roxy.
- 53:59Yeah, she was also just trying to like save her ex boyfriends
- 54:02mental health by because he's clearly having a mental health
- 54:05crisis. He's in love with a doll, and he
- 54:09was. She was just trying to help by
- 54:11getting rid of the object of his like obsession.
- 54:13Yeah. And then also she's just doing
- 54:14what anybody in a competitive, in a competitive business
- 54:18environment would do, and that's get rid of the competition.
- 54:20Yeah, yeah, you're right. She's just holding on to her
- 54:23work, you know, and. I mean, that's.
- 54:25Just like the rules of feminism. Anyway, everyone's there.
- 54:28Claire arrives Aristo Getty and she says that she's got security
- 54:33footage of Illustrious stealing the mannequins and so she get
- 54:38tries to get everyone arrested. Police arrest these men and
- 54:43then. Hey, Claire, on those security
- 54:46cameras, did you see anything else?
- 54:48I only saw what I needed to see. Which was you raw fucking a
- 54:52mannequin all over my store? Yeah, and I was licking myself
- 54:56off to it. She loved watching him fuck that
- 55:02hard plastic. Oh my God.
- 55:05Anyway, then Jonathan and Emmy get married.
- 55:09In a window display. In a window display.
- 55:11With the extras all around again.
- 55:15And everybody clapped. Nothing's going to stop us now.
- 55:18Plays the end. Perfect movie.
- 55:31Wow. And that's Mannequin.
- 55:33So it's a pile of shit. It's a pile of shit.
- 55:35I did not like watching this movie, but I what I will say is
- 55:39I liked thinking about it. OK, no.
- 55:41Because you sent me a message going like something like, wow,
- 55:45that was a pile of shit or something.
- 55:47And then I, I instantly was like, oh, here we are.
- 55:50Crystal getting on her high horse being all like, I'm better
- 55:53than this. And I'm like, I bet I'm going to
- 55:55watch this. I'm going to find some real
- 55:56queer joy in it. And I was like, actually, no,
- 55:58no, no, you're right, bollock. I yeah, it's.
- 56:03It's rubbish. No, you know what this movie is?
- 56:05It's clock wipe fashion montage, clock wipe, car chase, clock
- 56:10wipe. Fuck a mannequin.
- 56:11Clock wipe, 80 cent clock wipe, montage.
- 56:14Clock wipe, chase. Clock wipe.
- 56:15Merry mannequin. The end.
- 56:17That makes it sound really good, though, Does it?
- 56:19Yeah, I would watch that, yeah. They love a wipe.
- 56:23Oh they do. And a quirky comedy cartoon
- 56:25sound effects. Chuck that bomb.
- 56:26Bomb, bomb, bomb. Yeah, it is just a loosely
- 56:30assembled bunch of montages around the cockiest plot you've
- 56:35ever heard. Yeah, I was going to ask you
- 56:36about that. What do you think the metaphor
- 56:38is for the mannequins? Look at how you're holding.
- 56:42You think they're? Yeah.
- 56:43I just wondered if there's maybe like a deeper meaning?
- 56:45Deeper meaning. Like, do you know, do you think
- 56:47there's like, you know, an unlocked woman in every
- 56:53mannequin that is just there? I need to be fucked.
- 56:56I. Think actually what the meaning
- 56:57of this movie is is like it's kink positive and I I'm gonna go
- 57:04out and say like I appreciate that about this movie.
- 57:07It this movie is a non judgmental kink positive movie.
- 57:12Not only does it celebrate the queer character in this movie,
- 57:14it also celebrates someone with. Alamatapio.
- 57:21Agamata Agamata. And it's, it's totally non
- 57:26judgmental and it's just basically like, you know what,
- 57:29we love alternative lifestyles. Fly that freak fly.
- 57:32Exactly. And you know what?
- 57:35Because I read, I read in The Guardian a few years ago,
- 57:38someone did a piece where they were rewriting like how this
- 57:42film could be like through a different lens.
- 57:45And I really love it. And they they kind of made it
- 57:47into this dark film. So at the ending where he saves
- 57:51her, they were like, actually what really happens is he gets
- 57:54sucked into the machine and gets killed.
- 57:56And then what we see with her, him walking in the distance with
- 58:00her and getting married is just like, that's what was in his
- 58:03head the whole time. And it's all this just like
- 58:05dark. She's never been alive.
- 58:08And that's why you. Yeah.
- 58:09So I guess it's one or two, isn't it?
- 58:11It's either let's be tolerant of alternative lifestyles or
- 58:16potentially the dark version is you shouldn't actually encourage
- 58:20people's mental delusions because they will end up in a
- 58:23wood chipper and it doesn't matter how good their window
- 58:25displays are. Get that man some help.
- 58:28Also as well, something I just want to really pick up is I am
- 58:32worried about this, this couple and their futures together.
- 58:37Because they've got nothing. Yeah.
- 58:38I just feel like we don't think about the aftercare of these
- 58:41these kind of relationships, I mean.
- 58:42She's thousands of years old. She's literally done everything.
- 58:45Yeah, and also she know she's, you know, in her most recent
- 58:49life has just been held captive in a department store at night
- 58:53time, being part of window displays.
- 58:57I worry like, you know, she's probably going to leave him, I
- 59:01don't think. She's going to stay with it.
- 59:02Drip. Yeah, as soon as she, like,
- 59:04actually gets, you know what, an agency and freedom, she's going
- 59:08to realize that he's a loser one.
- 59:09Of my favorite quotes in the film, though, was when they were
- 59:12talking about the windows and she goes, she was like the
- 59:16windows. Oh, they were breathtaking.
- 59:20And it's the cycling one. Like she's got this.
- 59:24The mannequin version came from Charles, a bit grey as well.
- 59:27For some reason they haven't like been able to a colour match
- 59:29her skin. But it's just this like grey
- 59:32corpse again. It could be a corpse.
- 59:35Oh. We've been remodeling.
- 59:37Right. The 80s loved a weird concept
- 59:39like this, right? Like, think Weekend at Bernie's.
- 59:42Yeah. Or splash again.
- 59:44It's like how much cocaine was there available in the 80s that
- 59:48people were like, Yep, make it. Yeah, do it now.
- 59:51Yeah, Oh, you've got a, you've got a zany idea for a a man
- 59:55fucking a mannequin. Print it, send it to every
- 59:58cinema. Yeah, and every single.
- 1:00:00Sequel Order it. Yeah, I don't know.
- 1:00:03It's it is a bad, bad, bad movie that I think when you take as
- 1:00:08soon as you turn it off and take a step back, you're like, well,
- 1:00:12it's fun to think about a bit because.
- 1:00:14But it's it's one of those movies like you should not watch
- 1:00:16this movie, but I'm glad it exists.
- 1:00:21Yeah. Do you know what I mean?
- 1:00:23Yeah, I kind of get that. It's heart is in the right
- 1:00:25place. It's it's it's well-intentioned.
- 1:00:28I think. And because that's one of the
- 1:00:30biggest criticism from the critics, isn't it?
- 1:00:32This is such an earnest script. Yeah, and it is.
- 1:00:36And I guess that's like the younger version of me, the
- 1:00:38really young person that would watch this.
- 1:00:40I guess that's why I liked it, because it's so fucking simple
- 1:00:42to follow. Totally.
- 1:00:43But it is weird to basically make like a kids movie that is
- 1:00:46so much about fucking Yeah, because it is.
- 1:00:50It's basically like the plot is a cartoon.
- 1:00:53It's a cartoon or children for like 8 year olds.
- 1:00:56That is the level of the plot of this movie, but also with loads
- 1:01:00of sex. Yeah, it's just like, And then
- 1:01:01they start fucking. Yeah.
- 1:01:03The more they fuck, the more magic that happens in the
- 1:01:06windows. The more art they create.
- 1:01:10I remember reading despite its success in the box office, it
- 1:01:15didn't. Kim Cattrall complained that it
- 1:01:17didn't really help, you know, with her career as an actor.
- 1:01:19And it's like, no shit. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:24What do we think of her in this role?
- 1:01:26She's vanilla, she's one day, she's boring.
- 1:01:28She. Doesn't have enough to do, does
- 1:01:29she? I think she's a really great
- 1:01:30actor and I think she is sensationalist Samantha.
- 1:01:33I think Kim Cattrall outside of that persona though, is quite a
- 1:01:36boring person. I know we're watching this
- 1:01:38interview. She's so earnest.
- 1:01:40Yeah, she's just. And you know she's.
- 1:01:41A serious She takes it all very seriously and, you know, fair
- 1:01:44play. And it's like the jazz scatting,
- 1:01:46isn't it? There's.
- 1:01:47She is the jazz scatting clip. Yamaki Pierbo set a right for
- 1:01:52cable window Latin equal which is also amazing.
- 1:01:58But there's no like like with that.
- 1:02:02No, which is so weird that she ended up as like the most campy
- 1:02:06character of all time. Yeah, no, I think I for me she
- 1:02:10doesn't, although she looks great.
- 1:02:11She's obviously like incredibly beautiful and like, there's a
- 1:02:14reason why she's a mannequin. Yeah, You know, the way her body
- 1:02:18is is sensational, but I I don't know.
- 1:02:19There's like nothing there. There's no like wit.
- 1:02:22There's no like spark. You know, even Julia Roberts is
- 1:02:26someone who I think is a great actress, but I'm not like.
- 1:02:29Yeah, but she's also very, like, vanilla, right?
- 1:02:32Yeah, but when you see her in comedy roles, she's got that
- 1:02:35smile. There's something about a Julia
- 1:02:37Roberts moment that you're like, there's a star appeal there that
- 1:02:40you just don't have. It's missing a bit, isn't it?
- 1:02:43She does get some fun looks though.
- 1:02:45Yeah, but they're not even that great.
- 1:02:46Are. They they're not that great.
- 1:02:48I'm I'm scraping the. Barrel I I enjoy her being like
- 1:02:51gliding and like Oh my God, she tried to kill the dog and the
- 1:02:54guy. The dog dies though, doesn't it?
- 1:02:57No, I think it just runs away. Oh, OK.
- 1:03:00But yeah, watching an actual mannequin fly around on that
- 1:03:03glider, like. In aphasia.
- 1:03:06Yeah, worth making a movie just for me to see that.
- 1:03:09What are we filming today? What's on the sheet today?
- 1:03:11Oh yeah, yeah, no, it's the mannequin going around on that
- 1:03:13glider inside the department store.
- 1:03:15Great, great. Yeah, Let me see a couple more
- 1:03:16lines and then let's go for it. Come.
- 1:03:19On You're a genius. God.
- 1:03:23Apparently GW Bailey, who played the mall cop, he said.
- 1:03:28We didn't think it would ever be released.
- 1:03:29I couldn't believe we were filming this.
- 1:03:32So at least they knew. I mean, that's the other thing.
- 1:03:34Watching this, I'm like, do you think when you make a movie like
- 1:03:36this, do you think, oh, this is going to be good?
- 1:03:38Do you know what I mean? Like do you think you?
- 1:03:41Just there for the paycheck. You there for the paycheck?
- 1:03:43Or do you think like, Oh yeah, this could edit out, edit up.
- 1:03:46OK, it's hard. It must be hard to tell when
- 1:03:48you're like filming slapsticky fight stuff.
- 1:03:51You're like, OK, maybe this will maybe this will work, maybe.
- 1:03:53But oh God, it is fucking corny. Like so much of the jokes are
- 1:03:58just so cringe. This.
- 1:04:00I just feel bad watching it. Yeah, there's like, there's not
- 1:04:03this like, nostalgic campness I get from it.
- 1:04:06It's just like you said, corny. Yeah, it's missing a lot of the
- 1:04:09queer joy. Doesn't make me want to fucking
- 1:04:12mannequin. And if I'm watching a film about
- 1:04:14mannequin fucking, I want to fucking mannequin.
- 1:04:17Well, I should want to fucking mannequin after it, you know
- 1:04:19what I mean? Yeah, I'm just comparing it now
- 1:04:21to like your subservience, which to be fair, did make me want to
- 1:04:28fuck. Yes, now that is a sex doll that
- 1:04:31knows. And listen, that's not just some
- 1:04:33fucking a wet thing like Kim Cattrall is.
- 1:04:37She is out to get Megan Fox is out to get everyone killed the
- 1:04:41child all in the name of lust. She's a killer.
- 1:04:45She's Terminator. It's the reason why it's a camp
- 1:04:48classic. Although according to you and
- 1:04:50Peaches Christ it isn't a camp classic, but it remains A
- 1:04:53campsite to me. I don't really have anything
- 1:04:56else to say about this movie. No, it's.
- 1:04:58It's amazing that the movie manages to be an hour and a half
- 1:05:01long, because it is. It's a 30 minute child's
- 1:05:04cartoon. Yeah, totally.
- 1:05:06Stretched into an hour and a half.
- 1:05:07That's the fucking, isn't it? Yeah.
- 1:05:09And the montages. Yeah, it's like, like, right.
- 1:05:13We're just going to have to go the whole song for this montage.
- 1:05:15Yeah, we need the running time. And normally when you watch
- 1:05:18those montages, especially if it's a makeover, I don't know
- 1:05:20about you, but I'm always like, I could do with some more.
- 1:05:22I'm always like, that's so enjoyable.
- 1:05:24This one was like wow. We're still here doing the whole
- 1:05:28track. I think if you are listening to
- 1:05:31this episode and you also have fond memories of Mannequin.
- 1:05:35Fucking a mannequin. Of the movie Mannequin.
- 1:05:38Do not go watch it. Yes, keep your memories intact
- 1:05:42of this movie. Let it live as this fun, joyous
- 1:05:46thing in your brain. Which is why we shouldn't go to
- 1:05:49therapy, I think, because it's a similar thing, isn't it?
- 1:05:53It's just like, you know, that's not analyzed too much.
- 1:05:55Like, past behaviors, relationships.
- 1:05:57Look back because we will unlock some horrible truths.
- 1:06:00Like, yeah, I think this is the first film that we've watched
- 1:06:04that I'm like, yeah, don't watch it again.
- 1:06:06Like love it. Hollywood's queer.
- 1:06:09Yeah, Hollywood's queer. This movie is great.
- 1:06:12It's features songs you love. It's Kim.
- 1:06:16It's Mannequin. He's a fabulous black gay guy.
- 1:06:19Oh my God. Mannequin is a camp classic
- 1:06:22until you watch it. That's just exactly what I mean.
- 1:06:25And that's what I will say, if you are making an entrance, if
- 1:06:29you are making a suggestion for the suggestion sack, don't just
- 1:06:32go based off of some childhood memory.
- 1:06:35No, do you know what? No, I know what's happened.
- 1:06:38Someone has watched Mannequin recently and they've got really
- 1:06:41upset because it's destroyed all of their memories.
- 1:06:43And they were hoping we could say that and.
- 1:06:45No, and they've gone. I feel shit.
- 1:06:47Now let's spread my shit. It's an origin story.
- 1:06:50I'm going to put it in the suggestion sack and I'm going to
- 1:06:52destroy everyone else's memory. They were hoping that we could
- 1:06:55help them save it, and sadly we're not.
- 1:06:59No gay enough for that. But this is what I like like
- 1:07:01about this podcast because on paper this should be a camp
- 1:07:04classic, but I don't think it is.
- 1:07:05It's too heterosexual. Yeah, it's a slog to watch.
- 1:07:09Bring in more mannequins, Have everyone fucking.
- 1:07:11Oh, imagine they all came to life.
- 1:07:13Yeah, at night time they had a big party.
- 1:07:15A big. Orgy.
- 1:07:16Imagine Roxy got really dicked down by like a hunky underwear
- 1:07:21mannequin. Now we're talking.
- 1:07:25OK. Should we rate it?
- 1:07:26Let's rate it, yeah. OK, so Liza's and Merrill's, how
- 1:07:31many Merrill's are we giving this movie for?
- 1:07:33The quality? This movie reminds me of Vamp.
- 1:07:36Yes. And it reminds me of Buffy the
- 1:07:39movie, and I didn't like either of those movies.
- 1:07:42No, but I feel like Vamp had some really cool art direction
- 1:07:46exactly whereas this one. Doesn't I'm giving this movie 1
- 1:07:49Merrill? Yeah, I'm, I'm trying to think
- 1:07:51what the 1 Merrill's. I don't know it exists and and I
- 1:07:55think Kim Cattrall is fine. She doesn't deserve nothing.
- 1:07:59Yeah. They've got some chemistry.
- 1:08:02Yeah, 1 then. Groundbreaking 1 Merrill to
- 1:08:07Mannequin and Liza's How camp is this movie?
- 1:08:11It's not not got some camp. No, because it's like when she
- 1:08:15freezes and becomes the mannequin and like like that
- 1:08:17first time she poses into that weird position, I did laugh.
- 1:08:21Some of it's like true. Some of it's queer joy camp.
- 1:08:24Some of it's like, wow, I'm watching the worst movie that's
- 1:08:26ever been made, and that's also kind of camp.
- 1:08:29I did the extras excitedly, watching the window display
- 1:08:33Exactly, yeah. Exactly.
- 1:08:35Roxy's kind of camp, some of the fashions, kind of camp.
- 1:08:40Hollywood's kind of camp. Take car I guess.
- 1:08:43If you were like, and it's a Sunday and you've had like a
- 1:08:45huge weekend and you just want to like veg out with something a
- 1:08:49bit in the background and you're looking on your phone, then I
- 1:08:51think you could probably enjoy this.
- 1:08:52Yeah, you. Have as few brain cells as
- 1:08:54possible when you watch this movie.
- 1:08:55Yeah, and you'd be fine with it. OK, So for that it's 5.
- 1:08:58Sure. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:09:00I think that's right. Yeah, I think that's right.
- 1:09:03Some people are still going to think this is a camp movie.
- 1:09:06They're wrong. Well.
- 1:09:07It's a 5. It's not where you should go
- 1:09:09when you need a real fisting of camp.
- 1:09:14But if you just want a little a little dollop in your tea, I.
- 1:09:17Guess it's like fucking a mannequin.
- 1:09:18It's like, it's never going to be like fucking human, but it
- 1:09:21it. Might leave you a bit chafed and
- 1:09:23dry. Do you think is?
- 1:09:26He just like rubbing. Yeah, this is it.
- 1:09:28Also if if when she's alive and then someone catches them having
- 1:09:32sex and so she turns back to a mannequin.
- 1:09:34Is he? What happened?
- 1:09:36Is his Dick enclosed in her mannequin form?
- 1:09:38Or does it get like ejected? No.
- 1:09:42You see that big questions, big questions, but maybe he was not.
- 1:09:44Brave enough to answer. That and I don't know if we'll
- 1:09:47ever get the answers to those questions.
- 1:09:48Maybe in Mannequin too. Maybe that's what on the move
- 1:09:51means. It's about being ejected
- 1:09:52forcibly from a mannequin which has gone from living to statue.
- 1:09:57OK, great. Yeah.
- 1:09:59Fabulous. Probably.
- 1:09:59Yeah, I assume. There you go.
- 1:10:02That was Mannequin. That was Mannequin, and we'll be
- 1:10:04back in two more weeks. Oh wait, should we?
- 1:10:06Quickly. Do you dare?
- 1:10:09Yeah, go on. Quickly from the suggestion,
- 1:10:12sack the next movie we are covering.
- 1:10:15Get your fist right in there like you're trying to get it to
- 1:10:18come to life. An upcoming movie we are
- 1:10:21covering is. OK.
- 1:10:24Direct from the sack. Oh, here it is, right.
- 1:10:28We are doing Troop Beverly Hills and that is by Niall.
- 1:10:32Sent that one in Oh. Thank you, Niall.
- 1:10:34Hi, Niall. That's fun.
- 1:10:36Yeah, I think Troop Beverly Hills.
- 1:10:37Yeah, I think Troop Beverly Hills also has a cartoon intro.
- 1:10:42Oh, there you go. It's going to be like this.
- 1:10:44Movie. I'm presuming because it's about
- 1:10:47Girl Scouts. There isn't going to be as much
- 1:10:48fucking as Mannequin. Just presuming.
- 1:10:51You never know though, it was the 80s.
- 1:10:53Yeah, the 80s. There was a lot of cocaine.
- 1:10:54OK, we'll tune in for that episode.
- 1:10:56I can't wait to explore that one.
- 1:10:59And you know what? Mannequin did try, but it
- 1:11:02couldn't. Nothing is going to stop us.
- 1:11:04That was such a forced closer. Wow.
- 1:11:16Get away from her you bitch. Classic.
- 1:11:21He was in the Amazon with my mom when she was researching spiders
- 1:11:25right before she died. No.
- 1:11:29Hannah, you thought you become a prostitute or a dog.
- 1:11:33At it I used to love. Doggy chow.
- 1:11:37I used to love doggy chest too.
