  On Sunday, December 14th, just a little bit more than a week ago,

  a grisly discover discovery was made in the Brentwood mansion of

  Rob and Michelle Reiner. In the week or so, a little bit

  more than a week since that discovery, there have been

  there. There's been speculation and
• 0:26
  rumor circling around the Internet out of a town that is
• 0:32
  notoriously full of speculation and rumor.

  Tonight we're going to go over what we know happened and all
• 0:41
  the things that we don't know happened.

  talking about the murder of Hollywood icons Rob Reiner and
• 1:36
  Michelle Singer Reiner. Their son, Nick Reiner, has been

  charged with two counts of first degree murder in the stabbing or
• 1:50
  slashing death of his deaths of his parents.
• 1:55
  Now, we don't know if it was a stabbing death or a slashing
• 2:01
  death. We do know that his parents died
• 2:03
  of sharp force injuries. Now, the Reiner's two other
• 2:11
  children put out, as you guys know, a statement asking for any
• 2:17
  speculation to be tempered with compassion and humanity.
• 2:22
  And I thought that that was a what is the word?
• 2:28
  I want to use it. It was such a emotionally and
• 2:32
  socially mature way of making that statement.
• 2:35
  They know that many of us around the world are going to speculate
• 2:40
  about what happened to their parents in a very difficult time
• 2:45
  for them. They didn't say don't speculate.
• 2:48
  They just said please temper it with humanity and with
• 2:50
  compassion. And so that's what we're trying
• 2:53
  to do here on this channel. This is a case of great
• 2:56
  interest. It is a case where we are going
• 2:58
  to, I think, learn a lot 1 about the legal system, but also about
• 3:04
  the mental healthcare system here in the United States.
• 3:08
  And you know, what decisions we make as as a society sometimes,
• 3:16
  what are the effects of those decisions on families?
• 3:19
  And, and they could be famous families like the Reiners, or
• 3:22
  they could be everyday families like mine.
• 3:26
  But I found an article today that I thought did a very good
• 3:32
  job of explaining where we are in, in this case, what we know
• 3:38
  and what we don't know. But before we jump into that, I
• 3:41
  have a couple of pieces of audio from Mr. Nick Reiner that I

  would like to have a listen to. It comes from a podcast back in

  2015. Before I do, though, let's just

  half long of Mr. Reiner whose photo you're seeing on the

  screen right now. These photos are a couple years

  old. The I need to, I need to load up

  my system with some of the later photos where he's kind of
• 5:34
  looking, he's looking like he is in crisis.

  That's what he looks like. But let's have a listen.

  This came from the Dopey podcast in 2015 he's talking about.

  And the reason I think this is important is because we believe
• 5:48
  that Mister Nick Reiner is going to claim some sort of insanity
• 5:53
  defense, some sort of not guilty by reason of legal insanity.
• 5:59
  And I mean, the burden on the defense is to prove that beyond
• 6:07
  a preponderance of the evidence for the jury to consider.
• 6:10
  But one little piece of that one element of that is credibility.
• 6:19
  And so I want to play these two clips from the Dopey podcast.

  So he had to use his noggin, his little nubber to figure out a

  way. I mean, if anything, it proves

  that a person is not crazy to be able to reason through a problem

  like that, to apply logic to a problem and find a solution.

  How'd you get? Wellbutrid is it Cop it on the

  street. The way I got Wellbutrin is

  actually really fun. I was at Alena Lodge and they, I

  And they're pretty freaking out. And and I was like, you don't

  think I need meds? And they're like, yeah, we think

  you're just all up to an act here and this is all just fake.

  And I said OK. And then I went back to, you

  know, the roost. Remember the roost?

  No, that's what they called the little barracks.

  And I, I was like, how do I show these?

  And I'm crazy. So I was like, I'll throw a rock
• 7:48
  through a window. So I started and they have this
• 7:52
  thing there that they love, you know, that little church.

  It's not a church, really. They were building that when.
• 7:57
  I was there. It's like a meeting room that
• 8:00
  has these big glass windows. And they loved it.
• 8:05
  And they always were like Mrs. Delaney was here when they built
• 8:09
  this. And I just, I hated that whole
• 8:11
  thing. So I just, I took a rock and I
• 8:14
  started on the path and I was going up this hill and my friend
• 8:17
  Peter's like, where are you going, man?
• 8:19
  And I was like, can't talk right now.
• 8:20
  I've just got to do this. And I went and I threw the rock
• 8:23
  through the window, and some woman saw me and she ratted on
• 8:25
  me, and then they put me on Wellbutrin.

  So I mean, this is the kind of stuff this is the kind of stuff
• 8:37
  that's going to come up, especially in discovery.
• 8:40
  Now, I don't know that a jury will get the benefit of
• 8:44
  listening to something like this.
• 8:45
  I I don't know the insurance and outs law.
• 8:48
  And we know that Mister Nick Reiner has a very good criminal
• 8:52
  defense attorney in the form in the person of Alan Jackson.
• 8:58
  But if a jury starts to hear stuff like this, then I mean,

  his credibility is going to go out the window.

  And, and this is the thing guys, like, it's not like I have some
• 9:12
  some kind of like long experience in criminal
• 9:16
  enterprise. But when I was talking with
• 9:20
  let's see, I remember, for example, Daniel Winkowski.
• 9:24
  Daniel Winkowski is the sister of Amanda Winkowski.
• 9:27

  And if you don't know this, this case, the case of Amanda

  Winkowski, this is one that you should familiarize yourself

  with. But when I was talking with

  Danielle, she talked about all of the little things that she
• 9:48
  and Amanda would do in order to feed their habit.
• 9:51
  They had to be very smart and they were smart little criminals
• 9:58
  in order to be able to raise the money in order to feed their
• 10:02
  habit, right? And this audio that we're
• 10:04
  listening to that we just heard of Nick Reiner.
• 10:09
  This comes in my opinion, in my lay opinion, I should say from
• 10:14
  years of meticulously working and working the system, pulling
• 10:24
  the wool over the eyes of people.
• 10:27
  What would my wife call it? She would call it, I'm searching
• 10:32
  for the word and I'm not finding it, but it's just he had honed
• 10:36
  the craft of manipulating. That is the word that I'm
• 10:40
  looking for, of manipulation of other people in order to get his
• 10:44
  way. And if the prosecution can show
• 10:47
  to a jury that this is who Mr. Nick Reiner is, he is a
• 10:53
  manipulator. He is, he is smart.
• 10:57
  He's able to, he's able to control the actions of other
• 11:01
  people through his own actions, his own thoughts, then he's
• 11:04
  going to have a real hard time with an insanity defense, I
• 11:06
  think. And it'd probably be better for
• 11:09
  him to plead rather than take it to a jury.
• 11:14
  OK, that was clip number one. Clip #2 This is this is just one
• 11:20
  that talks about his dad helping helping him through a bad a bad
• 11:30
  drug experience. Here we go.

  So basically I was like, if I'm alone, any number of terrible
• 11:35
  things can happen. It's best for someone to know
• 11:38
  about this. And my parents had already been
• 11:39
  through a long process of in and out of rehabs with me.
• 11:42
  So, you know, like, they'd see me do coke and heroin.
• 11:46
  So I didn't feel like saying I was on acid be too big of a
• 11:50
  deal. So I walked into my parents
• 11:52
  room, the lights were off, they were asleep.
• 11:54
  And I said, guys, I have something to tell you.
• 11:57
  And they're like, whoa, what is it?
• 12:00
  And I was like, I, I took acid tonight.
• 12:02
  My mom was like, oh, I can't deal with this.
• 12:06
  I'm going to bed. And she like, ran downstairs and
• 12:09
  went and slept on the couch. And then I'm with my dad and I'm
• 12:12
  lying in bed tripping my off thinking about the Cleveland
• 12:16
  House of horrors. And he's like, calm down buddy,
• 12:19
  it's OK. What's, what's really sad about
• 12:23
  this is the the way that he thinks this is funny.
• 12:28
  And this is an indication to me anyway, that he was never what's
• 12:36
  penitent? Is that the right word?
• 12:38
  Right? Like he knew that he was an
• 12:40
  addict. And it doesn't seem like he was
• 12:43
  He he he recognized the the calamity that was in the wake of
• 12:52
  Hurricane Nick Reiner. Like it's just it's not funny.
• 12:58
  I'm going to back it up just a little bit more.
• 13:00
  And I'm lying in bed tripping my off thinking about the Cleveland
• 13:04
  House of horrors. And he's like calm down buddy,
• 13:07
  it's OK. I used to do this in the 60s.
• 13:12
  He'll calm down eventually. It won't be forever.
• 13:15
  And I was just trying to like and he just talked me down for
• 13:18
  like 8 hours straight. That's really sweet acid and
• 13:22
  they never grilled me for it. They never you know, and it
• 13:26
  just. Well, I think if I were parents
• 13:28
  and my kid came and volunteered information like that, that
• 13:31
  that's like a really good way they handled it instead of being
• 13:34
  punitive, you know what I mean? They just were like, helpful.
• 13:37
  Yeah, yeah, yeah. So you just you sat in the you
• 13:42
  and you were laying in bed. Were you in the same room as
• 13:44
  your dad or? Yeah, we were lying side by side
• 13:46
  on a bed. Oh my God, looking up at the
• 13:48
  ceiling while he told me about the 60s.
• 13:50
  Oh my God that's wild dude. Yeah, that's I just yeah.
• 13:56
  And Mooney is saying I kind of want the jury to hear these
• 14:00
  things too. Let me let me go back.

  They need both sides to make an informed decision.
• 14:05
  And that is a very good way of thinking about that Mooney,
• 14:10
  because what we want out of this is justice, right?
• 14:15
  If now, if Nick Reiner was in some kind of temporary insane
• 14:23
  state, some kind of psychosis, something like that.
• 14:28
  We definitely want him to. I'm, I'm talking societally and
• 14:32
  I'm also talking for myself. I want him to get help that he
• 14:36
  needs, and that might be institutionalizing him for the
• 14:40
  rest of his life. I would hate it.
• 14:43
  I would hate it if he was found guilty, but not insane, if he
• 14:52
  was indeed insane, because that means that he wouldn't get the
• 14:57
  help that he would need on. By the similar token, if he's
• 15:03
  just manipulating the system, that he's not criminally insane,
• 15:07
  he wasn't insane in that moment, then I want him locked away and
• 15:13
  I can. I'm not a prison justice kind of
• 15:15
  guy, but I don't want him living in Shangri-La the rest of his
• 15:18
  life. We're going to talk a little bit
• 15:20
  about that. By the way, I have a couple

  things that I want to read for you guys.

  We're going to talk about money here in just a bit, but before

  thought that this was an article that does temper with compassion

  but I, I think that this article is really well done and it's,

  it's pretty brief. I just want to go through it a

  Reiner's death. He does talk about stuff like

  And I think that it was recorded probably weeks and weeks and

  weeks ago. I don't know when he'll speak

  publicly. I think that eventually he will.

  Here's what we know for certain. Rob Reiner, his wife Michelle

  Singer Reiner, and their 32 year old son Nick attended.

  At some point, as they mingled and circulated around well

  dressed partygoers, Nick's appearance, demeanor and social
• 17:30
  intrusions began to gain attention, including a moment
• 17:34
  when he interrupted SNL alum Belle Hater and O'Brien mid
• 17:38
  conversation. I'd only read that it was Hater.

  I didn't know that it was hater and O'Brien talking.
• 17:47
  Here's what we don't know for certain.

  reported last week that an altercation took place between

  Nick and his parents. They include TMZ, who cited

  the LA Times who cited family friends, The New York Times who

  cited 2 attendees, CBS News who cited sources at the party, The
• 18:24
  New York Post who cited pals and sources, The Hollywood Reporter
• 18:29
  Sources not characterized Rolling Stone, who cited
• 18:33
  sources, and the Daily Mail who cited multiple attendees.

  And we've talked about the problem.

  And listen, I have, I have shared some of these, many of

  these articles with you here on this channel.

  And my issue with all of them is unnamed sources.

  Now, more than one source is better than one unnamed source,

  but unnamed sources, This is a plague that has just gone

  through the the journalism profession.

  It's a plague. But anyway that they should have

  editors that are like, Nope. But their editors are like,

  yeah, let's do it. I think that has to do a lot

  with this is a bit of a tangent, but I think it has a lot to do

  with the competition for our clicks and eyeballs.

  But anyway, and man, OK, Gavin, tangent.

  Goodness, yes, this is a tangent.

  But I have to say that I am guilty of it in my day job as a

  reporter. I have, I have submitted

  sometimes completed articles, but many times it's like, hey,

  I'm talking with my editors about I've got this source.

  I, I can put it into the I trust him or her and put it into my

  story. Well, who are they?

  What did they say? Can we corroborate?

  And my editors will go no way. We're not touching that with a

  10 foot pole. And on my end of things, I have

  been really frustrated about it. Probably because I also want to

  compete in our little corner of the world for those same clicks

  and eyeballs. But anyway, it's a plague and

  I'm not immune to it. OK, Continuing his his article

  where he's talking about anything else we may have read
• 20:37
  or heard other than, you know, interrupting Hater and O'Brien.

  We don't know. He goes each.

  Did I go to the right place? Yes.

  Each has slightly different details with a wide range of how
• 20:52
  the incident is described, from an awkward and uncomfortable
• 20:55
  exchange Rolling Stone to a loud argument, shouting match or

  massive blow up. People, TMZ, New York Times, New
• 21:04
  York Post. None suggests there was any kind
• 21:08
  of physical exchange. Not one person who is at the
• 21:14
  party, a highly private affair at O'Brien's home in the Pacific
• 21:18
  Palisades, has spoken on the record.
• 21:21
  Besides O'Brien and the Rhiners, only Hater and Jane Fonda have
• 21:26
  been named as being there, and neither of them has spoken
• 21:30
  publicly or even confirmed their attendance.
• 21:34
  Then on Friday, the RAP, which is the publication that we're
• 21:37
  reading here, reported that there was no blow up, citing a
• 21:41
  Hollywood executive who was there.
• 21:43
  Quote, that's Bull S, the executive told the rap, speaking
• 21:49
  specifically of the Daily Mail report Friday that O'Brien
• 21:52
  himself taught guests out of calling police over the alleged
• 21:56
  Reiner fight. The executive, of course, who
• 22:02
  also spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that Nick
• 22:06
  Reiner was acting erratically around the A List crowd but
• 22:10
  denied any major confrontation, telling the rap quote.
• 22:14
  I said to Conan the next day I said, what is this stuff?
• 22:18
  What is all this stuff about a fight?
• 22:20
  He said. I saw no fight.
• 22:23
  At least they're using quotes here.
• 22:25
  It's still an unnamed source characterized as an executive, a
• 22:31
  Hollywood executive. OK.

  Continuing the article, the executive said Nick Reiner was,
• 22:37
  in fact, walking around making people feel uncomfortable,
• 22:41
  eavesdropping on conversations and that kind of thing.

  But the executive was vehement that O'Brien and guests did not
• 22:50
  witness a shouting match between Rob and Nick Reiner, adding
• 22:53
  quote, if there had been a big fight with the Reiners, there
• 22:56
  were a million people there. I knew no one mentioned it to
• 23:00
  me. And yeah, it let's continue.

  The raps reporting echoed the New York Times earlier last
• 23:08
  week. Last week, citing a family
• 23:10
  friend also reported that stories of a confrontation at
• 23:15
  the holiday gathering were, quote, overblown.
• 23:19
  Even reports of the rhiner's comings and goings have been
• 23:22
  divergent. Initial reports had it that the
• 23:25
  Rhiners left immediately after the argument, but the time
• 23:28
  source disputed that, saying the family had quote grown used to
• 23:31
  close quote Nick's unusual behavior and would not have
• 23:35
  flinched. Rolling Stone reported that the
• 23:39
  Rhiners brought Nick along to quote, keep an eye on him close
• 23:42
  quote while people reported that the family was quote never
• 23:46
  worried close quote that Nick would turn violent and were
• 23:50
  settled into his recent return home.

  OK, now this is a great paragraph here.

  OK, let me highlight it. This is a great paragraph.

  Hollywood has always been quick to gossip and slow to publicly
• 24:06
  tear down its own. Add in the factors of an
• 24:10
  embarrassing incident at an elite invite only party where
• 24:14
  extreme discretion is silently baked into the invitation, and
• 24:17
  the unspeakable tragedy for one of the town's most beloved
• 24:21
  family patriarchs, is it any wonder that this game of
• 24:25
  telephone has overloaded the circuits?
• 24:28
  You guys remember the game of telephone.
• 24:31
  For those of you maybe outside of the United States, maybe you
• 24:33
  have something like this. Maybe it's just called something
• 24:38
  different where you are. The game of telephone is
• 24:40
  something that we played as little children, sometimes as
• 24:43
  family, sometimes in like classroom settings where one
• 24:47
  person would whisper in the air one time a phrase something.
• 24:54
  They would tell that person something, but they would only
• 24:56
  tell it one time. That person had to listen to
• 24:59
  what they heard and then go to the next person in line and
• 25:02
  whisper that in their ear one time and so on It would go until
• 25:08
  you got to the last person. And then once the last person
• 25:11
  had heard what the previous person has said, they announced
• 25:15
  to the group what it was that they heard.
• 25:19
  And it, I don't think it ever, ever in my life came back to
• 25:26
  being even closely resembling what the first person said.
• 25:32
  So that's what he's saying. Like, come on.
• 25:34
  With all of this, is it any wonder that this game of
• 25:41
  telephone overloaded the circuits?
• 25:44
  It's possible that more details from the party will come forth
• 25:48
  at trial. And this is very interesting.
• 25:51
  Prosecutors looking to establish a timeline and motive to convict
• 25:55
  Nick Reiner Reiner of the double murder of his parents could
• 25:59
  subpoena the invite list and call for live testimony from any
• 26:04
  number of attendees, including O'Brien himself.
• 26:08
  At this rate, with Hollywood carefully circling the wagons
• 26:12
  around the Reiner murders, they shouldn't expect any volunteers.
• 26:16
  I agree, but they but they will probably get plenty of
• 26:20
  witnesses. On the other hand, the Los
• 26:23
  Angeles County District Attorney would appear to have no problem
• 26:27
  getting a conviction without ever making a single call from
• 26:31
  the O'Brien Party invite list. The physical evidence alone will
• 26:35
  be overwhelming with materials from the crime scene itself.
• 26:39
  Blood stained linens recovered at the hotel room to which Nick
• 26:43
  Reiner fled the night of the murders.
• 26:45
  Which we may or may not know to be true because that was
• 26:50
  reported well by TMZ and others from interviews with like hotel
• 26:57
  staff, untold spools of security footage, and quite possibly a
• 27:04
  confession of some kind on their evidence sheet.
• 27:06
  And that is possible. There might be.
• 27:08
  We don't know. Nick Reiner, 32, was formally
• 27:11
  charged Tuesday with two counts of first degree murder after
• 27:14
  being arrested on Sunday as the main suspect in his parent's
• 27:17
  deaths, which were were ruled later in the week as homicide by

  grieving. This tragedy, discovered on

  December 14th, is also increasing the public's interest

  in what happens when killers could inherit wealth from their

  victims. That's because Nick Reiner,

  their son, was charged with two counts of first degree murder
