1:50
SPEAKER_07: Hello and welcome to a brand spanking new episode of What's Your Favorite Scary Movie?
1:57
SPEAKER_07: Today we're talking A24's saucy new slasher, X.
2:03
SPEAKER_07: But that's just the tip.
2:05
SPEAKER_07: We're going to stab into a few other movies we're screaming for this month in a new segment we're calling our freaky faves.
2:14
SPEAKER_07: I'm joined today by our own A24 whore, Julianne.
2:21
SPEAKER_04: Hi, boys.
2:24
SPEAKER_06: And back on the pod is John.
2:28
SPEAKER_06: Hello, everyone.
2:34
SPEAKER_07: No comment.
2:36
SPEAKER_07: All right.
2:36
SPEAKER_07: So today we're going to be talking about A24's X, which we are so excited about.
2:42
SPEAKER_07: But first, before we get to that and all of our spoilery thoughts, we are going to be discussing our freaky favorites, where we will be going around the circle and discussing what we've watched this month that we love because there's just not enough time to podcast all the things that we want to podcast about.
3:00
SPEAKER_07: So we're going to do a little recommendation for you guys, and then we'll jump in to X.
3:08
SPEAKER_07: So to kick us off, I will start my freaky favorite of the month, even though I saw it last month.
3:14
SPEAKER_07: So I mean, the loot the rules are really loose and free.
3:17
SPEAKER_07: Here is The Cursed.
3:19
SPEAKER_07: Did you guys see that?
3:21
SPEAKER_04: I did not, and I'm curious to hear your thoughts because I heard decent things about it.
3:25
SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
3:26
SPEAKER_07: John, I know you saw it because we saw it together.
3:29
SPEAKER_07: It's like, well, we went and saw it together.
3:32
SPEAKER_07: So well, so what I really liked about The Curse is it's a slow burn werewolf movie.
3:37
SPEAKER_07: And I feel like werewolves, oh seen there, seen there.
3:41
SPEAKER_07: I haven't been there, seen that.
3:44
SPEAKER_07: But I thought it had some really interesting additions to like the traditional werewolf movie and some really cool creature effects, which I've been really into lately.
3:54
SPEAKER_07: If you can give me some sort of gooey, icky monster, sign me up.
3:58
SPEAKER_07: There were some parts in this movie that were really ruthless and gross and nasty, and maybe even made me a little bit sad.
4:05
SPEAKER_07: So I'm always on board for that.
4:07
SPEAKER_07: And something that I thought was really interesting that I feel like I don't feel often is that I felt like it would be really well adapted to like a stage play.
4:16
SPEAKER_07: So I was like, this is not a sensation I feel often while watching a movie, but I would love to go see The Cursed on Broadway.
4:23
SPEAKER_07: Uh but that said, I do think it has some pretty big pacing issues.
4:27
SPEAKER_07: And it was kind of frustrating that it would be like zipping to like some really intense uh action where like I'd be like, uh, and then like immediately flip on a on a dime, like in a second to just like complete stillness for a few minutes.
4:42
SPEAKER_07: And then that it just was frustrating to me because I'd be like as soon as we got started, it was uh pulling us right back.
4:49
SPEAKER_07: But overall, smash for me.
4:52
SPEAKER_07: Uh John, do you give it a stamp of approval?
4:56
SPEAKER_06: I do.
4:56
SPEAKER_06: I agree.
4:57
SPEAKER_06: There was some pacing issues.
4:59
SPEAKER_06: I feel like 30 to 45 minutes of that movie could have been cut out.
5:04
SPEAKER_07: Oh, ruthless.
5:06
SPEAKER_07: Well, but I would still recommend it.
5:09
SPEAKER_07: Uh, the other thing I saw this month that is not new, but I just want to shout out is I saw Valentine for the first time last month, and I just thought it was a delight, it was really fun.
5:19
SPEAKER_07: I feel like that one gets a lot of hate.
5:21
SPEAKER_07: And I watched and was like, this is exactly what I rented this movie to watch.
5:25
SPEAKER_07: So done and done.
5:28
SPEAKER_06: I think my top of the past month would have been fresh, which was a pleasant surprise.
5:34
SPEAKER_06: Why?
5:35
SPEAKER_06: Why was it a surprise?
5:37
SPEAKER_06: I was not expecting to enjoy it as much as I did.
5:39
SPEAKER_06: It was just such like a fun take on the dating, like modern dating.
5:44
SPEAKER_06: I mean, you get there, and the whole like vibe of the movie, it's like so fun and lighthearted.
5:50
SPEAKER_06: Like she found someone that she's really connected with after so many terrible dates.
5:56
SPEAKER_06: And then it turns out to be can I spoil it?
6:00
SPEAKER_06: Are we allowed to spoil?
6:02
SPEAKER_07: No, don't spoil the recommendations, but uh fun take on modern dating.
6:08
SPEAKER_07: It sounds like you have some horror stories to tell, John, from your dating life.
6:13
SPEAKER_06: Well, I mean, I could bring up some from you, but uh Oh my god!
6:20
SPEAKER_07: That one kept me guessing the whole time.
6:23
SPEAKER_06: And I also loved the relationship between the two friends, like two strong women working together to overcome this evil man, and just like the disgusting imagery of the two of all the men in that movie just being like pigs.
6:40
SPEAKER_04: What was that woman's name who plays her best friend?
6:43
SPEAKER_04: Because she I think was the star of the movie, like hands down.
6:46
SPEAKER_04: She was she was kind of like what's his face in get out.
6:50
SPEAKER_04: That just really funny best friend movie.
6:54
SPEAKER_07: Um that would be Molly, played by Jojo T.
6:58
SPEAKER_07: Gibbs.
6:59
SPEAKER_04: Okay, yeah.
7:00
SPEAKER_07: Yeah, Julianne, you've been really high on Fresh over the past month.
7:03
SPEAKER_07: I feel like you've been gassing her up.
7:06
SPEAKER_04: I was.
7:07
SPEAKER_04: I uh I think it's I would have enjoyed it even more had I not watched the trailer.
7:13
SPEAKER_04: So if by chance you've avoided it so far in the last month and you still haven't find out, just don't even read it, just don't read anything about it.
7:20
SPEAKER_04: Just watch it.
7:21
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's uh it becomes one of those movies that changes with a half hour, and you're like, oh shit, and the the credits or I'm sorry, not that the credits, the title card rolls in 30 minutes in, which is so cool because you're like, here's the actual movie.
7:34
SPEAKER_04: The last 30 minutes were just a primer, and I love that.
7:36
SPEAKER_04: But uh yeah, I I dig fresh.
7:41
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, some gray kills, some scenes that made me want to throw up, which is hard to do.
7:47
SPEAKER_06: Uh Julianne, what are you loving right now?
7:50
SPEAKER_04: You know, I'm gonna go off of John and say there's a movie that it's it's not new, but it came out I think in 2020 called Black Bear.
7:59
SPEAKER_04: And it I believe it I believe it premiered at Sundance that year, and then should hit the fan with the pandemic.
8:04
SPEAKER_04: But it stars Aubrey Plaza.
8:06
SPEAKER_04: I don't want to give anything away because the similarity here is that the movie changes about a half hour in.
8:11
SPEAKER_04: It's one thing and then it's not.
8:13
SPEAKER_04: So I don't want to give too much away, but it's basically it starts off as Aubrey Plaza is this real, as she plays, a real deadpan kind of character.
8:21
SPEAKER_04: She always does it, plays it perfectly.
8:22
SPEAKER_04: She's uh, she's I think a she's a writer, filmmaker.
8:26
SPEAKER_04: She's kind of looking for inspiration.
8:28
SPEAKER_04: So she rents out this Airbnb in this like secluded area, beautiful place, and it's owned by this couple who is close in age, and uh they just start hanging out, and there's like this weird sexual tension between the three of them, and just things ensue.
8:43
SPEAKER_04: I wouldn't say, I wouldn't say that it's horror, it's more horror adjacent, it's more it's it's a whole bunch of things.
8:51
SPEAKER_04: But I think if you're someone who is just kind of intrigued by like maybe like a thriller aspect or kind of more like just things that are seemingly one thing and they turn into a whole different ballgame, I think you'll take this movie.
9:03
SPEAKER_04: I was really blown away by, was super impressed by.
9:06
SPEAKER_04: It's on Hulu as well.
9:07
SPEAKER_04: And uh on top of that, I watched a lot of uh new French Extremity films from Shudder.
9:13
SPEAKER_04: Shudder dropped a whole bunch this past month.
9:15
SPEAKER_04: Uh Frontiers.
9:16
SPEAKER_04: Um, I had rewatched High Tension, I've seen that many times before.
9:20
SPEAKER_04: And uh Livid, Livid, I hadn't seen before.
9:22
SPEAKER_04: It's kind of hard to find in the past.
9:24
SPEAKER_04: Uh came out in 2011, super cool movie.
9:28
SPEAKER_04: Um, I don't even know how to just describe the plot.
9:32
SPEAKER_04: It's just kind of one of those things where it's like it's a lot of different horror, it's disturbing, it's creepy.
9:37
SPEAKER_04: There's a nod to a Halloween three mask scene, which I know we all love, but uh yeah, definitely recommend Livid.
9:43
SPEAKER_04: Uh speaking of um Ty West, we're gonna talk about in a moment.
9:46
SPEAKER_04: Uh, go back and watch his movies if you haven't seen anything yet.
9:49
SPEAKER_04: I I rewatched The Sacrament, it's been a long time, and poof, that is a dark path.
9:54
SPEAKER_06: But uh I haven't seen his movies.
9:58
SPEAKER_07: Oh, John, I was looking back at the filmography.
10:01
SPEAKER_07: Um, and the House of the Devil is the only one that I've seen.
10:05
SPEAKER_07: Uh, he also has yeah, The Sacrament and The Innkeepers, which I saw uh it used to be like everywhere on Netflix.
10:13
SPEAKER_07: It was always like, watch this, and I never did.
10:16
SPEAKER_04: It um it's good, it moves a little bit slow for me, but it is good though.
10:20
SPEAKER_04: It is something that you know you may be a little bit like okay, pick up the pace here, but I think it's worth worth a watch.
10:25
SPEAKER_04: But uh, I'm just so happy he's back.
10:27
SPEAKER_07: So yeah.
10:29
SPEAKER_07: And uh before we get to X, I thought we would do a quick moment where we could all shout out what we're excited and looking forward to seeing next.
10:38
SPEAKER_07: Julianne, why don't you kick this one off since you're on a roll, baby?
10:42
SPEAKER_04: Oh boy.
10:42
SPEAKER_04: I mean, I I'm kind of looking forward to the surprises, the little indie movies that we don't know are coming out that just come out of nowhere.
10:50
SPEAKER_04: You're like, oh shit.
10:51
SPEAKER_05: Like fresh.
10:52
SPEAKER_04: Like fresh.
10:52
SPEAKER_04: Um, there's also a movie called Speak No Evil.
10:55
SPEAKER_04: I believe Shudder acquired it from Sundance.
10:58
SPEAKER_04: I heard really dark, disturbing things about it.
11:01
SPEAKER_04: So I think it might be a heavy one, but speak no evil, look out for that one.
11:05
SPEAKER_04: I I've heard interesting things.
11:06
SPEAKER_07: So yeah, I'm all on the Northman train.
11:09
SPEAKER_07: I'm trying, I tried when I was thinking about this to like pick something off the path, but I was like, no, I can't think about anything else.
11:16
SPEAKER_07: I'm such a slut for Robert Eggers.
11:18
SPEAKER_07: I love the witch, I love the lighthouse.
11:21
SPEAKER_07: I feel like this trailer is giving me what I loved about the witch that I was missing a little bit in the lighthouse, where you get like the dark, foggy, dusty grayness, and then like some really unnatural moments of beauty that I'm really looking forward to.
11:35
SPEAKER_07: Plus, I have such a bone ski for both Nicole Kidman and Alexander Skarsgard.
11:42
SPEAKER_07: And so that's just gonna be a big horn fest for me.
11:45
SPEAKER_04: Weren't they in um what's that show called?
11:48
SPEAKER_04: Big Little Eyes Together.
11:50
SPEAKER_07: They were, oh, were they?
11:51
SPEAKER_04: They were he was an abusive uh couple, right?
11:56
SPEAKER_07: Yeah, you saw his wiener, which uh could have been a prosthetic.
12:00
SPEAKER_07: And thinking back again, I think she like hits it with a tennis racket or something, something weird happens.
12:04
SPEAKER_07: She likes smacks it.
12:06
SPEAKER_07: Yeah, yeah, good moment.
12:09
SPEAKER_07: Culture.
12:10
SPEAKER_07: John, what are you looking forward to?
12:12
SPEAKER_06: Uh Northmen as well.
12:14
SPEAKER_06: I'll jump on that train.
12:15
SPEAKER_06: Very excited.
12:16
SPEAKER_06: Um is Uma out yet?
12:20
SPEAKER_07: I think it came out this week.
12:21
SPEAKER_07: Sandra O.
12:22
SPEAKER_06: This week, yeah, yes.
12:24
SPEAKER_06: I'm a huge Sandra O'stand.
12:26
SPEAKER_06: I love her in Grey's Anatomy and um Killing Eve is a fantastic show.
12:32
SPEAKER_06: If no one's seen that, uh so I'm excited to watch that.
12:36
SPEAKER_06: I don't know if the movie will be that good, but I love her as an actor.
12:40
SPEAKER_06: So yeah, and also I'm excited for is it mentioned before?
12:47
SPEAKER_07: Yeah, from the director of X Magina and Annihilation, I believe.
12:53
SPEAKER_07: And I am an Annihilation Stan.
12:55
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, his name's Alex Garland.
12:57
SPEAKER_04: Yep.
12:58
SPEAKER_06: That looked good.
12:59
SPEAKER_06: Looks like a very interesting, it almost gave me melancholia vibes a little bit.
13:05
SPEAKER_06: Just some of the shots in it in the preview.
13:08
SPEAKER_07: A24 is on a roll this year because also coming out this month, I believe, is everything everywhere all at once.
13:15
SPEAKER_07: And that looks like a fucking rager.
13:17
SPEAKER_07: Yeah, so it's gonna be a good year.
13:19
SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
13:20
SPEAKER_07: All right, I'm ready to talk about X.
13:25
SPEAKER_07: Let's get into that.
13:26
SPEAKER_07: X came out last week.
13:27
SPEAKER_07: It's so good.
13:28
SPEAKER_07: If you don't know what it's about, it is about a crew on an avant-garde art house porn who stay overnight at an isolated farmhouse outside of Houston, Texas in 1979.
13:41
SPEAKER_07: What starts as a sexy good time soon becomes an erotic massacre, as the elderly couple who own the property begin picking them off one by one, slasher style.
13:55
SPEAKER_07: This is what we've all been looking forward to, I feel like for months.
14:00
SPEAKER_07: This is what Julianne and I alluded to in our Texas Chainsaw Massacre as what we are deeming the true Texas Chainsaw Massacre sequel.
14:08
SPEAKER_07: And um, I don't know, it's given everything we want.
14:12
SPEAKER_07: So uh Julianne, start us out.
14:14
SPEAKER_07: What'd you think of X?
14:15
SPEAKER_04: I loved it.
14:17
SPEAKER_04: I loved it.
14:18
SPEAKER_04: I I'm a tie hard, which I which I call for Ty West.
14:23
SPEAKER_04: I was so excited to get him back when I heard A24 Ty West and a Slasher about a year and a half ago.
14:29
SPEAKER_04: It was announced.
14:30
SPEAKER_04: I was like, oh fuck, this is like my maya culpa of movies.
14:34
SPEAKER_04: And I listen, I went to go see it last Monday.
14:39
SPEAKER_04: It was I had a really I had got some bad news and I was just bummed on Monday.
14:43
SPEAKER_04: This movie brightened my day.
14:45
SPEAKER_04: It just I had fun.
14:47
SPEAKER_04: I was thinking, I've been thinking about it ever since.
14:48
SPEAKER_04: I saw I've seen it twice now.
14:50
SPEAKER_04: I saw it on Thursday night too.
14:51
SPEAKER_04: And I just I loved it.
14:53
SPEAKER_04: I had it had so much to chew on, but in a really simplistic way that's not which Ty West is really good at.
15:00
SPEAKER_04: He's he has he layers these themes in his movies that are super subtle and quiet and not in your in-your-face kind of way, in a really great genre fair.
15:09
SPEAKER_04: That's what that's what that's the whole point of genre movies, is kind of layering these little messages and themes and these really fun, crazy, violent movies.
15:17
SPEAKER_04: And I just loved it.
15:19
SPEAKER_07: Yeah, and Ty West, I was going to say, uh, the director, writer, and editor.
15:27
SPEAKER_07: And what I was going to say is in The House of the Devil, that is a movie that I watch.
15:32
SPEAKER_07: And like, if I didn't know anything about that movie, it would fool me.
15:36
SPEAKER_07: I would think that was a movie from the 70s.
15:38
SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
15:39
SPEAKER_07: This one, what I think is an interesting evolution is it still looks very aesthetically 70s, but I think it's really like a fascinating shift from that, where it is also kind of what we think of as a 70s movie at this point, but also fooling us a little bit.
15:57
SPEAKER_07: Like I felt like in the editing, like it was almost making fun of us a little bit and having fun with like those sliding transitions.
16:04
SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
16:05
SPEAKER_07: And um, also I thought thematically, it's like stuff that is not out of place in the 70s, talking about sexuality and beauty and aging, but it is also very modern in those, um, and the way it discusses those.
16:20
SPEAKER_07: So, and I want to circle back to that in a second, before or after saying that the cinematography for X was done by Elliot Rocket, who is also the cinematographer for the House of the Devil.
16:33
SPEAKER_07: And you can tell that that is a partnership made in uh hell.
16:39
SPEAKER_07: So uh, yeah, I'm really high on X as well.
16:44
SPEAKER_07: And um yeah, we'll dive into the layers in a second after we get John's top of mind thoughts on X.
16:54
SPEAKER_06: I loved it, I thought it was so entertaining.
16:57
SPEAKER_06: I do like how they styled it kind of 70s.
17:00
SPEAKER_06: You have you know the framing of everything, the look, how it looks like it's almost shot on film at times, which I kind of I love that grainy texture to a movie.
17:11
SPEAKER_06: And I mean, how could you go wrong with two classic horror themes?
17:16
SPEAKER_06: Sex, drugs, and tons of blood.
17:21
SPEAKER_06: Did we just those two?
17:25
SPEAKER_04: Do we happen to see how Ty shot this?
17:27
SPEAKER_04: Because I I couldn't find it.
17:30
SPEAKER_04: I was curious.
17:30
SPEAKER_07: Um I have not, but I would love to think that, especially those little porn scenes, I really hope that they actually had one of those cameras going on there because I really love the shifts in um in Optics Vantage, I don't know, image when it would shift from the movie we were watching to the movie they were filming.
17:53
SPEAKER_07: Yeah, um, yeah, I think House of the Devil was shot on film, so I wouldn't be surprised if this was as well.
18:00
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I think that was 16 millimeter.
18:03
SPEAKER_06: Um, it makes me excited to see his other stuff because I've never seen a Ty West film.
18:09
SPEAKER_04: So it's such a journey, yes, to do it.
18:12
SPEAKER_07: I know, and such an interesting person because also we've seen him act in You're Next.
18:17
SPEAKER_07: So it's like we know Ty West from all angles, baby.
18:22
SPEAKER_07: I was going to ask uh Julianne, because I know this was like a movie Taylor made for you, as you said.
18:29
SPEAKER_07: Uh, why don't you start us off on a little discussion on the themes happening here?
18:34
SPEAKER_07: Uh with beauty and aging and sex, and there's a lot of really interesting, uh nuanced things happening here that I feel like are unusual and unique to be depicted in you know a mainstream theater movie.
18:49
SPEAKER_07: We saw this at an AMC.
18:51
SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
18:52
SPEAKER_04: I think I'm sure there are some women who may not agree with me, but I think that I really dig a man, a male filmmaker who kind of gets it.
19:01
SPEAKER_04: And I saw that with Ari Aster.
19:04
SPEAKER_04: I saw that with even Robert Eggers and The Witch.
19:06
SPEAKER_04: They they can write women and have empathy for women in a way that does not feel forced.
19:10
SPEAKER_04: It doesn't feel phony.
19:12
SPEAKER_04: It feels like they actually get what it's like.
19:14
SPEAKER_04: Not that they ever fully will, but you know what I mean.
19:16
SPEAKER_04: They they're just empathetic to it.
19:18
SPEAKER_04: And I think in this film, I was just, I was so it was so cool to me to see um a 40-year-old, 40-something guy write about a woman, a very much older woman who is still horny, who we could all be so lucky to be 80 years old or something and still want sex.
19:36
SPEAKER_04: I mean, God, I mean how how rare is that.
19:39
SPEAKER_04: But to be, but to be this let's like fetus fetus fetus of the word.
19:45
SPEAKER_04: This fetus shock of beauty and youth in a way that's like we still that that can be easily placed in right now.
19:56
SPEAKER_04: I mean, look at social media now.
19:58
SPEAKER_04: I'm 30 something and I still feel like it's like you're constantly comparing, you're constantly in your head, like and this woman has to be, yeah, she's bitter and she is entitled and she's you know lashing out like she's not gonna get what she wants.
20:10
SPEAKER_04: Is that wrong?
20:10
SPEAKER_04: Of course it is, but it's darkly funny in a way that's like she's like, I don't like blondes, I'm gonna kill her.
20:17
SPEAKER_04: He's not gonna fuck me.
20:17
SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna kill him.
20:18
SPEAKER_04: Like it's just we how how often do we ever see a movie, a hag exploitation movie, that's because of she's horny.
20:26
SPEAKER_04: It's a horny hag exploitation movie.
20:28
SPEAKER_04: We've I I never saw something like that before.
20:30
SPEAKER_04: I've never seen a movie where the motivation is just purely like fuck you, I'm jealous of you, and you're flaunting it in my face and I don't like it.
20:37
SPEAKER_04: I think that's that that is so it's simplistic, but yet it's not.
20:41
SPEAKER_04: And I love that.
20:42
SPEAKER_07: Yeah, and I've already seen on Twitter there was something about people criticizing uh the way this movie has like, I don't know, there was a really bad take about someone saying that it has like misinterpreted the original reason that sex was in horror movies, which garbage.
21:01
SPEAKER_07: But what I think is interesting though is that people so often say that sex was in those original slashers as a morality tale, which again, those directors from that time have pushed back against time and time again.
21:14
SPEAKER_07: But what is so interesting about the way this slasher is depicting sex is that it's not about morality.
21:23
SPEAKER_07: Well, it is about morality, this movie, but it's not it's not punishing, it's not doing that, but it's also not doing this thing where sex is such a distraction where nobody can see the killer because they're having sex, like in you know, Halloween or something, but that it is using sex as a lens kind of for internal workings of desire.
21:48
SPEAKER_07: And um, something that really struck me as myself, a person with a bachelor's degree in dance, uh, who has performed once or twice.
21:57
SPEAKER_07: Uh, something that I could really relate to.
22:00
SPEAKER_07: To Pearl, the main character, uh, the main, the elderly woman who I was fucking shocked when I was writing the notes for this to find out was played also by Mia Goth, who played Maxine.
22:13
SPEAKER_07: She played both roles, and that blew my mind.
22:16
SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
22:16
SPEAKER_07: Um, I mean, I think you can tell that the elderly woman is wearing some age makeup, but I just did not know it was the same actress.
22:24
SPEAKER_07: That is insane to me.
22:26
SPEAKER_07: I didn't know that either.
22:28
unknown: Yeah.
22:28
SPEAKER_07: Yeah, that's crazy.
22:30
SPEAKER_07: But I mean, looking back, I'm like, how was I so stupid?
22:33
SPEAKER_07: Of course it was.
22:34
SPEAKER_07: But uh, something that I really connected to is that dance, you know, is so much about obviously your body and just being in tune with your body.
22:43
SPEAKER_07: And, you know, I see even in like dance academia and stuff, there's such a discourse about what is sex, sexual, and what is not in dance.
22:53
SPEAKER_07: When really it's like the idea of your body and sex don't have to be that separate.
22:58
SPEAKER_07: And so those my favorite moment in the whole movie was when she killed RJ in front of that car and then felt so like enlivened by that moment that like the the line between killing and sex and orgasm like seemed blurry and is so like suddenly in tune with her body and has that like dancing moment in front of the lights, which is kind of funny and like campy.
23:29
SPEAKER_07: But also, I felt really emotionally invested in that moment as someone who I've literally said, as soon as my body like cannot do what I want it to, like, I'm done.
23:39
SPEAKER_07: I want to be out of here.
23:41
SPEAKER_07: So I thought that like thinking of this in terms of like just bodies uh was really fascinating, both in terms of the sex and the horror, uh, and those weird lines between death and pleasure.
23:55
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, apparently Ty was inspired by this because he he turned 40 and he was like, Man, my bodies can't do exactly the same things that I was doing 10 years ago or so.
24:05
SPEAKER_04: And then he started thinking about aging and started thinking about what that feels like when you come to a point where it's like, oh shit, my life just passed me by and I cannot no longer do the things, and and your brain, your brain still wants those things.
24:19
SPEAKER_04: And uh yeah, I I I like how we can have a discussion about this.
24:22
SPEAKER_04: I chime in, John, what you think.
24:24
SPEAKER_04: But I mean, I think this movie is still very sex positive.
24:27
SPEAKER_04: I think it's actually extremely sex positive, even though they uh inevitably die for having sex, but like I think it's you can it's still it still is.
24:35
SPEAKER_06: I mean, and it's also interesting, like how the generational difference and how they view sex.
24:41
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, because I mean her whole thing, like she wants to have sex, like she still has that libido, that drive.
24:49
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and then how they making the film view sex, they have that whole conversation on the couch saying, you know, it's just sex, like it's not a big deal.
24:59
SPEAKER_06: Like you can have love for someone, but still feel physical attraction, and the two aren't separate, like, or the two are separate, they're not the same thing.
25:07
SPEAKER_07: Yeah, and that was a thing that I was thinking was an example of such a 2022 conversation in a movie that still feels true to the 70s, because that's a conversation so many people are having right now about what are what are ideals and values that are just instilled in us because they always have been, and what are actual values that like are meaningful and still carry over?
25:33
SPEAKER_07: Yeah, it's so interesting.
25:35
SPEAKER_07: And I also thought that it was really brave of this movie.
25:39
SPEAKER_07: I mean, of course, there's a very particular demographic of people who would be going to see this movie.
25:44
SPEAKER_07: The trailer is not fooling any like evangelicals to go see X.
25:49
SPEAKER_07: I don't think that's gonna happen.
25:51
SPEAKER_07: But the way that this movie is critical, I don't think of Christianity in particular, but of organized religion and this kind of brainwashing way of instilling morality in people, I thought was really brave and something that you don't see uh so harshly done.
26:08
SPEAKER_07: The the way that the movie is doing this kind of like flickering between uh like the televangelist and the herd of cattle.
26:17
SPEAKER_07: Uh, I thought when that happened, my brain, I said preaching to the cattle, and that is my new phrase.
26:26
SPEAKER_07: And just the way that it is doing those um just kind of subtle, sometimes subtle, sometimes not criticisms.
26:35
SPEAKER_06: I just was like, wow, yeah, yeah, I enjoyed the religious aspect to where the you know, the husband and the wife kind of think they're holier, they're better than these younger people because these younger people are just having sex and being whores, as I think she says at one point.
27:00
SPEAKER_07: Well, I want to push back on that a little bit because I think the husband is this movie, is so much of the men trying to play the women and not understanding that they just can't.
27:12
SPEAKER_07: It brings to mind in my big fat Greek wedding when she says, The man is the head, but the woman is the neck, she can turn it anyway.
27:21
SPEAKER_06: That's what this movie was giving me because the woman, the pearl, I guess it's more like she's more coveting, like she is jealous and coveting these like younger female bodies and like their ability to be so free, and he is like judgmental and putting her down and holding her in.
27:42
SPEAKER_07: Well, and he's doing the same thing, he's doing that because he thinks he can't have sex and he can't get it up for her, but it's also the same thing with the men in the in the porn group because yeah, yeah, Jenna Ortega, she wants to be in the movie, and then RJ's like, not my girlfriend, and then they have that conversation outside where they are talking about like, Well, I'll make them do this.
28:06
SPEAKER_07: No, I'll make them do this, and all the time you can see the women through the window, like going to get a red, like they're just gonna do it.
28:13
SPEAKER_07: Yeah, uh, and I think it that goes to the deaths as well, where it's like, okay, let's knock these men off so we can actually get to the interesting part, which is the women.
28:23
SPEAKER_04: That's true.
28:24
SPEAKER_04: And speaking of which, uh speaking of non-traditional, I mean, look at Maxine as our final girl.
28:28
SPEAKER_04: I mean, Maxine is a coke-snorting porn star, you know, like she's I I the one thing I will say, I do think she's a little bit thin.
28:37
SPEAKER_04: Like, I do think she's a little bit thinly written, where I would like to seen a little bit more about her, but that's okay.
28:42
SPEAKER_04: I mean, it's not a big deal.
28:43
SPEAKER_05: But like, yeah, but look at that.
28:44
SPEAKER_04: I mean, how like that total this takes place in 1979.
28:48
SPEAKER_04: At that time, we we had Laurie Strode, we had a couple, you know, we had Sally Hardest, we had a couple final girls like happening in cinema, but like that whole thing of like she is just the the the pillar of non-morality, and she's she gets out of there and she's snorting coke because she runs away, gets away.
29:05
SPEAKER_04: And like, and the whole the whole mantra of like, I will not accept the life I do not deserve, like that could be applied to she used that uh what her daddy preached her in a whole other way that's that that's more meaningful to her, that's way more interesting, and I think that was I love that.
29:21
SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I was also thinking uh about the thinly written part, it is interesting because I feel like Jinora Ortega, who of course is like our new scream queen from Scream and uh what she was in you, and there was one other thing I thought was interesting.
29:35
SPEAKER_07: Oh, she was in the babysitter sequel, not good, but uh she first of all when she screamed in that basement, chills, beautiful killer, pipes, lungs, you know, whatever.
29:49
SPEAKER_07: Uh, but then also Britney Snow's character, who of course is the queen from the prom queen uh remake, which we all adore.
29:56
SPEAKER_07: Oh I actually thought for Brittany Snow is obviously not the final, like we know she's gonna get a nice little death in there.
30:07
SPEAKER_07: Jen Ortega, they kept me they kept me guessing, but I think that the way that the side characters in these movies are still able to give you like certain depths, really incredible.
30:17
SPEAKER_07: Yeah, um and I wanted speaking of Britney Snow, of course, an accomplished singer, star of hairspray, the movie, which we love.
30:29
SPEAKER_07: Um I wanted to ask your opinion, Julianne, on this interesting scene where she uh uh hooks up with her friend Kid Cuddy on the guitar and they sing Landslide on this montage of Pearl trying to put on her seducing makeup.
30:46
SPEAKER_07: And uh, what do you think of this uh really bizarre sequence?
30:51
SPEAKER_04: I didn't think it was bizarre because I think that the lyrics in that song are about getting older and changing and the heat tie west, which I and it's it's it boggled my mind.
31:01
SPEAKER_04: I saw people going, what was the point of that scene?
31:04
SPEAKER_04: I that was so out of place.
31:05
SPEAKER_04: And I was like, what?
31:06
SPEAKER_04: That was the the literal point of that song is that it's reflecting on life and getting older, and they're showing a literal split screen of Pearl looking at her mirror, looking at herself in the mirror and reflecting on trying.
31:20
SPEAKER_04: She, I mean, it's sad.
31:21
SPEAKER_04: She's putting on the blue eyeshadow like Maxine.
31:23
SPEAKER_04: She's trying to look and feel younger and pretty and desirable.
31:26
SPEAKER_04: And then you have these people who are younger and are desirable and are beautiful, and it's and they're and they're self-aware enough where they're saying, someday we're gonna be so old, we're not gonna be able to fuck.
31:38
SPEAKER_04: Like, I think that was really thought like that was a thoughtful kind of like like they're not these people aren't assholes, these younger people are not assholes, they're just trying to live their lives the best way they can before it passes them by.
31:49
SPEAKER_04: And I think that unfortunately, we don't know if if Pearl has let life pass her by per se, but she can no longer do the things that she wants to do, and she's reflecting on that.
31:59
SPEAKER_04: And I think that it was a beautiful scene.
32:00
SPEAKER_04: I actually I thought it was so thoughtful and poignant.
32:04
SPEAKER_07: Yeah, that's interesting that you said people didn't get it because the reason I thought that it was slightly out of place is because I thought it stepped a little too far into on the nose for me.
32:16
SPEAKER_07: I feel like so much of the movie was on the nose, but this one was like so much like nudge.
32:21
SPEAKER_07: Hey, if you haven't caught on so far, like I was like, how do people do not?
32:25
SPEAKER_04: How do people don't get this?
32:26
SPEAKER_04: Like it's crazy, but yeah, yeah, it was gorgeous.
32:29
SPEAKER_07: Uh honestly, I think that the scene where Pearl tries to seduce her husband and fails, and then the scene where they actually do have sex kind of instill what that scene did, I think a little more gracefully.
32:41
SPEAKER_07: I'm not mad at it, but I was watching and I was like, this is a little bit more precious than the rest of the movie has been.
32:46
SPEAKER_07: Uh, and I I don't know, don't hate it, but I also was like, could have lost it.
32:51
SPEAKER_07: I don't know.
32:52
SPEAKER_07: Oh something that I really enjoyed about the ending, you talked about her driving away and doing the bump of Coke.
32:58
SPEAKER_07: And I, of course, you know, have been so brainwashed by the slasher formula that I assume that the police officers we were seeing at the beginning of the movie, who of course iconic line at the end, you know, goddamn horror movie, whatever he says, so good as a final line of a movie.
33:18
SPEAKER_04: Um goddamn fucked up horror picture, I think.
33:22
SPEAKER_07: Yeah, yeah.
33:23
SPEAKER_07: So good.
33:24
SPEAKER_03: One of the boys found this inside.
33:26
SPEAKER_03: What do you think is on it?
33:30
SPEAKER_03: Let's see what goddamn fucked up horror picture.
33:36
SPEAKER_07: But um, I of course assumed she drove away and got the police.
33:40
SPEAKER_07: But what I think is interesting, then seeing the movie and realizing that she didn't, and they're just finding this scene, is that um as much as this movie can preach about and preach, I don't mean in like a mean way or anything, but as much as it can discuss like sex positivity and understanding and being non-judgmental, in the end, Mia Goth's character, I don't think, would be able to go get the police.
34:10
SPEAKER_07: Like, I think that there was a really sly message in the end of like, if she had gone and gotten the police, like they would have judged her just as much as maybe the older people.
34:20
SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
34:21
SPEAKER_07: Um, and so there are some insidious things, also, so much talk about the American dream, and then you see Pearl, and it's like, that's what the American dream got her.
34:30
SPEAKER_07: So there's a lot of um, there's a lot of really harsh criticisms of society in here that are like really like oof.
34:39
SPEAKER_04: I actually forgot about that in the beginning.
34:41
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, they're all in the van talking about what's your American dream, Maxine?
34:44
SPEAKER_04: What's your and and it I yeah, that that's true.
34:46
SPEAKER_04: It could kind of harkens back to like here's the American dream.
34:49
SPEAKER_04: You have a couple living their own little world and their farm and married life for all these years and yet not happy now.
34:56
SPEAKER_04: We don't know what they are.
34:57
SPEAKER_07: They've got their they've got their White House and the you know, Texas fields, but yeah, I don't know.
35:05
SPEAKER_07: I think be critical and make up your own mind, point of the movie.
35:11
SPEAKER_07: Don't be a don't be a cow or a sheep.
35:14
SPEAKER_07: So yeah.
35:15
SPEAKER_07: Uh any other thoughts before we get into our fun wrap-up questions?
35:20
SPEAKER_04: Um, I will say there's uh, and tell me if you guys be interested in reading about this.
35:25
SPEAKER_04: I'm thinking about pitching this, but there's actually a couple, I think they're from Missouri, or they they were from Missouri, they're dead now, but they were much a very old couple serial killers who used to kill people at younger people that come to their farmhouse.
35:38
SPEAKER_04: And it kind of reminded me of this.
35:39
SPEAKER_04: Their names are Ray and Faye Copeland.
35:41
SPEAKER_04: This happened back in the 80s, but I thought it was kind of interesting.
35:45
SPEAKER_04: I was like, Ty, did you know about Ray and Faye Copeland?
35:47
SPEAKER_04: And were you uh kind of arguing back?
35:49
SPEAKER_04: I don't know, but I just thought that was an interesting little uh we don't not too many, you know, very, very senile people uh killing people.
35:58
SPEAKER_04: So, or maybe there are, we just don't know about them.
36:00
SPEAKER_04: But yeah, they're they're two of the most famous ones.
36:02
SPEAKER_07: So that's interesting.
36:04
SPEAKER_07: I'd read that.
36:05
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I'd read it.
36:06
SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I love anything true crime.
36:09
SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
36:10
SPEAKER_07: Hello, listener.
36:11
SPEAKER_07: This is Parker from the future, letting you know that Julianne, the fastest keyboard in town, has indeed written this article, and you can read it right now on bloodydisgusting.com.
36:25
SPEAKER_07: Go check it out and support our own A24 whore.
36:31
SPEAKER_07: Um, all right.
36:33
SPEAKER_07: I want to know you guys, what was your most memorable murder from X?
36:37
SPEAKER_07: John, kick us off.
36:40
SPEAKER_06: I think it would have to be the very first murder of the scene of RJ.
36:46
SPEAKER_06: Mmm.
36:47
SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
36:48
SPEAKER_06: Just getting right.
36:49
SPEAKER_06: That's the one who was in front of the car.
36:52
SPEAKER_06: Director.
36:52
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, okay.
36:53
SPEAKER_06: Make sure he's getting the right person.
36:55
SPEAKER_06: Of RJ just getting hacked away, like his whole neck just getting stabbed repeatedly in the lights, and as the whole color just shifts to red, and then she just slowly dances, and you can just see her come back to life, and she's so happy.
37:12
SPEAKER_07: I gotta say, I love when movies like this justify a stylistic thing, like the scene turning red because the lights are covered.
37:22
SPEAKER_07: That is just so funny.
37:23
SPEAKER_06: Like she just hacked away so much, you just splattered those lights in blood.
37:29
SPEAKER_07: It was so good.
37:31
SPEAKER_07: Julianne, what do you think?
37:33
SPEAKER_04: I agree, but I'm gonna go with just because this is a personal fear of mine, even though it didn't kill him initially.
37:39
SPEAKER_04: Just when Wayne steps on that goddamn nail.
37:43
SPEAKER_04: Listen, I that is something I go down when I go to my mom's house and she has these like really, you know, creakety stairs in the basement.
37:52
SPEAKER_04: And I swear I look down at my feet every single time just to make sure there's nothing on the stairs.
37:57
SPEAKER_04: And I that's a huge fear point of stepping on a nail.
38:00
SPEAKER_04: And I just I think that was I was like, oh, it's just the wins of me over that.
38:04
SPEAKER_04: Eventually, of course, he dies from getting a rake in his eyeball, but that didn't affect me as much as as the nail in the foot.
38:12
SPEAKER_07: Well, and getting nailed, getting nailed.
38:17
SPEAKER_07: Uh, you know, for me, it was hands down.
38:20
SPEAKER_07: I watched the movie and I was like, that's the one.
38:22
SPEAKER_07: Brittany Snow getting chommed by that gator.
38:25
SPEAKER_07: That was like one of the funniest things I've ever seen.
38:29
SPEAKER_07: And she's this bitch, John.
38:33
SPEAKER_06: That was a good one.
38:34
SPEAKER_06: I don't like swans.
38:37
SPEAKER_07: I mean, so darkly funny.
38:39
SPEAKER_04: Oh my god, so funny.
38:41
SPEAKER_07: That was a good scene.
38:42
SPEAKER_07: Uh, on a scary scale, you guys, one to five, where would you put X, Julianne?
38:49
SPEAKER_04: Um, I'll go with three.
38:51
SPEAKER_04: I think it's it's probably more fun than scary per se, but I think it's it can be really nasty and violent.
38:57
SPEAKER_04: I think uh, I don't know, there were sequences where I was like, these people are kind of fucking creepy.
39:02
SPEAKER_04: I mean, she if that older Pearl was in my bed touching me while I was sleeping like that, I'd be I mean, I'd be freaking out.
39:08
SPEAKER_04: So yeah, they're it was they're kind of creepy.
39:11
SPEAKER_04: A three.
39:11
SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I'm gonna give it a four.
39:13
SPEAKER_07: Step it up from you.
39:14
SPEAKER_07: I just feel like I mean, when I was a kid, I was such a little scaredy cat.
39:18
SPEAKER_07: If I saw a horror movie in theaters, like I would like be considering walking out because I'd be like oh like hands in front of my eyes.
39:25
SPEAKER_07: And I just as an adult have not felt that in so long.
39:28
SPEAKER_07: And there were a couple scenes where like I was really tensed up with my hands like ready to cover my face.
39:34
SPEAKER_07: And the jump scares in this movie were so interesting because so many of them were not just like somebody popping out, but in the editing, which is so weird.
39:42
SPEAKER_07: I feel like I haven't seen that.
39:44
SPEAKER_07: Uh, so yeah, I thought it was really scary and yeah, really nasty.
39:49
SPEAKER_07: And of course, a lot of mature content because we got a lot of naky people, not a lot of peace.
39:55
SPEAKER_07: I want a little more pee.
39:57
SPEAKER_07: You know, if we're gonna objectify these men, I want a little more peen.
40:01
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, a little shadow pee, but that's all we got.
40:03
SPEAKER_04: That was hilarious, though.
40:05
SPEAKER_07: Well, and then the the corpse, we got his uh his weenie who was hanging up in that cellar.
40:11
SPEAKER_04: Real quick, do how do we feel with Kid Cody kind of his death being shied away like that?
40:16
SPEAKER_04: Do we do we like that?
40:17
SPEAKER_04: Because I noticed Ty did that a couple times where he kind of shied away from showing, and I was like, that's interesting.
40:22
SPEAKER_04: But I guess he wanted to make more of an impact of the what the kills that like he wanted to actually show.
40:27
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
40:28
SPEAKER_07: I thought that was a bummer.
40:29
SPEAKER_07: I did think that it was like a thrilling sequence, like because I thought maybe the gator was gonna get him in the water, and then you know, you know that the man is bad, but Kid Cuddy doesn't.
40:39
SPEAKER_07: I don't know, but I also am uh not a fan of guns and horror movies.
40:44
SPEAKER_07: Like, I want something that feels not only a little more intimate, but also just like a little more like gross and guns.
40:51
SPEAKER_07: I don't know, to me, it's like I don't know, too easy, too easy, too real, too.
40:57
SPEAKER_07: I want something a little more elevated to use uh a taboo word in the horror industry.
41:04
SPEAKER_07: Um, John, scary scale.
41:08
SPEAKER_06: I think I'd have to give it a two and a half.
41:10
SPEAKER_06: I was not very scared during it.
41:13
SPEAKER_06: I loved the movie, I thought it was a great slasher movie.
41:17
SPEAKER_06: Some of the themes and messages were scary, and like when she gets into bed, very creepy and gross and kind of makes your skin crawl.
41:28
SPEAKER_06: But a lot of the scares I found predictable, like with Wayne looking through the eye holes or Jenna Ortega like reaching for the locks.
41:41
SPEAKER_07: Well, well, I guess.
41:45
SPEAKER_07: Um disagree.
41:49
