- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome The Money and Wealth with John O'Bryant, a production
- 0:03Speaker 1: of the Black Effect Podcast Network and iHeartRadio. Hey Hey
- 0:13Speaker 1: John O'Brien Here, Money and Wealth podcast series. This is
- 0:16Speaker 1: a bonus track. So I'm gonna give you a lot
- 0:18Speaker 1: of extras in twenty twenty six. I'm gonna get you
- 0:21Speaker 1: deep into the how. A lot of folks will you know,
- 0:26Speaker 1: I don't motivate you or whatever it is they're doing,
- 0:29Speaker 1: you know, giving you, giving you you know what you
- 0:33Speaker 1: should have done, could have done, might do. I'm gonna
- 0:36Speaker 1: tell you what actually happened to me, how I handled
- 0:40Speaker 1: a situation, and and and hopes that it helps you
- 0:46Speaker 1: to avoid what I dealt with on the front end,
- 0:50Speaker 1: or or be able to negotiate with yourself to make
- 0:54Speaker 1: sure that you elevate the situation in real time time
- 1:00Speaker 1: if you find yourself in it. So this particular deal
- 1:05Speaker 1: was in Los Angeles. I was I hadn't been homeless.
- 1:09Speaker 1: D made myself out of that situation build a real
- 1:13Speaker 1: estate company, finance company that was involved in real estate
- 1:17Speaker 1: and was opening an office at h I don't I
- 1:23Speaker 1: don't really want to tell you the building, but I'll
- 1:25Speaker 1: tell you the building. The West Westwood Gateway complex at
- 1:28Speaker 1: Lati Hera at Santa Monica and Supovida south West Corner
- 1:34Speaker 1: Marble Building beautiful and I won't mention the company that
- 1:39Speaker 1: owns it. I don't need to get into a litigious situation.
- 1:44Speaker 1: But it was a beautiful eighth story Florida Ceily Glass
- 1:52Speaker 1: suite and I was opening Brian Group Companies. I was,
- 1:57Speaker 1: you know, twenty one something like that, and I had,
- 2:01Speaker 1: you know, had capital stack, had gotten my credit back together,
- 2:08Speaker 1: at least my business credit. I've had revenue, had had
- 2:13Speaker 1: things going on, I had employees, you know. It was.
- 2:18Speaker 1: It was ready to go, and I went to go
- 2:21Speaker 1: sign the lease. We had negotiated over the phone and
- 2:26Speaker 1: maybe through email. Might have been through email, who knows,
- 2:29Speaker 1: it might have been through a third party, and I'm
- 2:31Speaker 1: not quite sure, but I know I talked to some
- 2:33Speaker 1: people over the phone at some point to finalize the
- 2:35Speaker 1: terms to lease a suite, and I was ready to
- 2:40Speaker 1: write the check. There was no issues here, nothing, no
- 2:43Speaker 1: concerns whatsoever. And I show up to the negotiating table
- 2:48Speaker 1: and make a long story short, there, all of a sudden,
- 2:53Speaker 1: we're a lot of concerns, contingencies and need to go
- 2:57Speaker 1: to committee. Okay, committee is a whore, is a camel,
- 3:01Speaker 1: is a horse designed by committee, right, and so when
- 3:04Speaker 1: somebody wants to go to a committee, it's a bumpy ride.
- 3:07Speaker 1: That basically means your deal ain't never happening, and so
- 3:10Speaker 1: we need to go to they need to go to
- 3:11Speaker 1: a committee, a closing committee. Whatever they said, you know, basically,
- 3:14Speaker 1: you know, blah blah blah, let's get this person of
- 3:18Speaker 1: color out of here, is my way I perceived it.
- 3:21Speaker 1: There was nobody there of color but me. I'm not
- 3:24Speaker 1: That's why I didn't I describe this video as racism
- 3:28Speaker 1: or discrimination. I don't know if it was racism discrimination.
- 3:30Speaker 1: It was certainly biased. In other words, they were biased
- 3:33Speaker 1: against something they were uncomfortable with or someone they were
- 3:36Speaker 1: uncomfortable with the situation they had never experienced before. And
- 3:41Speaker 1: I got it. I mean, they were from a different world,
- 3:44Speaker 1: and I was young and aggressive and presumptuous. I came
- 3:48Speaker 1: there ready to sign the deal and like, of course
- 3:50Speaker 1: you're going to sign a deal with me, and they're like,
- 3:53Speaker 1: of course not So anyway, they sent me packing, and
- 3:56Speaker 1: that's supposed to be the end of the story. I leave,
- 3:59Speaker 1: and I believe as you know, success is going from
- 4:02Speaker 1: failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm, over and around it,
- 4:06Speaker 1: through it. I'm going to get to it. I take
- 4:08Speaker 1: no for vitamins. Right, You've heard me say this before.
- 4:11Speaker 1: I never give up. Right. If you're in front of me,
- 4:14Speaker 1: I'm warning you, please move aside. I'm going to run
- 4:17Speaker 1: over you if you're between me and where I'm trying
- 4:19Speaker 1: to get. And I'll say it nicely. I'll say it
- 4:21Speaker 1: a couple of times. Nicely. You don't get the memo.
- 4:23Speaker 1: You may get trampled on, like as I'm getting where
- 4:25Speaker 1: I'm going. So I'm young, and you know, and not
- 4:29Speaker 1: to be dissuaded. I had a business. It wasn't a
- 4:32Speaker 1: you know. I was just needed this. I needed to
- 4:34Speaker 1: place it somewhere. I had a business, investors, the whole thing,
- 4:38Speaker 1: and a nice balance sheet for that time. And so
- 4:44Speaker 1: I thought, how can I reimagine this situation? You're being
- 4:48Speaker 1: run out of town, get in front of the crowd
- 4:50Speaker 1: and made like a parade. How do I turn a
- 4:52Speaker 1: negative into a positive? H What are they looking for?
- 4:55Speaker 1: How to get them to yes? So I went and
- 4:58Speaker 1: found a guy. Sure how I found him? This was
- 5:01Speaker 1: pretty much pre Internet. But I found this guy. His
- 5:05Speaker 1: name is Chris Blaxlin. I believe he's since gone on
- 5:09Speaker 1: to heaven, got rest of soul. Nice guy Chris Blackson,
- 5:13Speaker 1: Australian six' two ish six two or six, four looked
- 5:18Speaker 1: like he came out Of esquire magazine Or fortune magazine
- 5:22Speaker 1: or both hands some debonair, articulate had run a public
- 5:27Speaker 1: company In, australia had been run out Of australia under you,
- 5:31Speaker 1: know interesting, circumstances still, needed you, know needed a finance's.
- 5:35Speaker 1: LIFESTYLE i had heard he was in default or running
- 5:39Speaker 1: or in behind on his mini mansion in some beach
- 5:44Speaker 1: community palace, VERTES i believe it, was and had A
- 5:46Speaker 1: jaguar that he, loved convertible and he, was you, know
- 5:49Speaker 1: gonna lose that and he needed some. Money SO i
- 5:53Speaker 1: met with him AND i hired him to be my.
- 5:55Speaker 1: President and typically when you hear these these, stories you
- 6:05Speaker 1: might have a mainstream company that, needs forever, reason a minority.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Face here was a minority company that decided they needed
- 6:14Speaker 1: a mainstream. Face SO i hired this, Guy Chris. Blaxlin
- 6:19Speaker 1: he did nothing wrong up to this. Point he did nothing,
- 6:21Speaker 1: wrong and so there's no, casting no. Expursions in, fact
- 6:24Speaker 1: he was very helpful to. ME i hired, him made
- 6:26Speaker 1: him my. President he walked in uh to the company
- 6:30Speaker 1: and signed the lease a triple. NET i, mean it
- 6:33Speaker 1: was a beautiful. Lease it was a great deal for.
- 6:35Speaker 1: Us and that's ultimately WHERE i ended up Launching Briand
- 6:41Speaker 1: Group companies and its, affiliates and WHERE i also ended
- 6:44Speaker 1: up hosting the beginnings Of Operation. Hope Because Operation hope
- 6:48Speaker 1: when it, founded it when it was founded after the
- 6:50Speaker 1: Writing King, riots or in the midst of the Writing King,
- 6:52Speaker 1: riots of course it was not. Unplanned there was no,
- 6:54Speaker 1: office there was no. Infrastructure SO i ended up giving
- 6:57Speaker 1: operational SPACE i, FOUNDED i loaned my employees To Operation,
- 7:01Speaker 1: hope and then hired and employees and paid them Through
- 7:05Speaker 1: brian Adventuser Operation. Hope that SO i was original sponsor
- 7:09Speaker 1: in that. Office so this, Guy Chris, BLACKSMAN i wasn't paying.
- 7:18Speaker 1: ATTENTION i was focusing on now the the, business but
- 7:21Speaker 1: also the the you, know the other things that were
- 7:25Speaker 1: going on in the. Community and he was focused on
- 7:29Speaker 1: his community. Himself SO i had bought him A he
- 7:33Speaker 1: lost his, car SO i bought him a, yougo a
- 7:39Speaker 1: little beater it was brand, new but it was a
- 7:41Speaker 1: couple of few thousand dollars and it was a base.
- 7:44Speaker 1: Model AND i remember one, day this guy's like six
- 7:46Speaker 1: two sixty four and imagine Him jim voting himself in
- 7:50Speaker 1: This hugo trying to drive down to The palisades to his.
- 7:52Speaker 1: House and one day he told me the when show
- 7:58Speaker 1: wipers or the side mirrors flew, off it was on the.
- 8:00Speaker 1: Freeway it was either the SIDE i don't know side
- 8:03Speaker 1: or the windshoor, wipers and they just flew off because
- 8:06Speaker 1: it was such a it was such a base model.
- 8:08Speaker 1: Car and, anyway he sold the car and pocketed the
- 8:12Speaker 1: money and never told me about. It it was a company.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Car he sold the, car and he had done some
- 8:19Speaker 1: other stuff that wasn't all that. Cool BUT i let
- 8:22Speaker 1: it pass because he had done a solid for, me
- 8:25Speaker 1: for which without, HIM i wouldn't have got in the.
- 8:28Speaker 1: Game SO i thanked him for what he did and
- 8:31Speaker 1: gave him grace for you, know what he didn't do
- 8:34Speaker 1: and the other stuff he did do, Right and because
- 8:37Speaker 1: none of us are saints and you, know, uh and
- 8:40Speaker 1: he was having a hard time of, life AND I
- 8:43Speaker 1: I i really appreciated this humanity To he actually was
- 8:46Speaker 1: a really nice, guy but that was. Uh and and
- 8:50Speaker 1: he was my you, know ghost president for a few.
- 8:53Speaker 1: YEARS i MEAN i paid him just to be. THERE
- 8:57Speaker 1: i did all the, work BUT i couldn't operate in
- 9:00Speaker 1: that environment with no, credibility young from you, know my
- 9:05Speaker 1: background of south central la et, cetera without having credibility and.
- 9:08Speaker 1: Cover and, yeah So god bless him and his, soul
- 9:14Speaker 1: thank him and abstincive for what he did for, me
- 9:16Speaker 1: because he could have said. No and it was you,
- 9:21Speaker 1: know as they, say fair, exchange no. Robbery it was fair.
- 9:23Speaker 1: Exchange and my issue really was with a real estate,
- 9:28Speaker 1: company not him for putting me in that situation to begin.
- 9:30Speaker 1: With BUT i learned lessons. Early don't take things emotional
- 9:34Speaker 1: and don't assume the. Worst like, AGAIN i don't assume
- 9:37Speaker 1: that was racism or assume it was. Discrimination it certainly
- 9:41Speaker 1: was some form of. Discrimination they were just. Uncomfortable they
- 9:45Speaker 1: were biased against. Me and AND i vowed to after
- 9:53Speaker 1: that day to never have the word butt next to my.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Name THAT i could have IF i could afford. It
- 9:57Speaker 1: like WHEN i walked out of the, room somebody would,
- 9:58Speaker 1: say you, know really respect, them young. Man but you,
- 10:01Speaker 1: KNOW i really admire, him but you, KNOW i really
- 10:04Speaker 1: want to do business with. Him but, right you can,
- 10:07Speaker 1: say you, know you don't like the WAY i dress or,
- 10:09Speaker 1: whatever but not not a, material not a substantive butt
- 10:13Speaker 1: that stops the. Deal SO i just worked really hard
- 10:16Speaker 1: to make SURE i removed all the butts out of
- 10:18Speaker 1: my life so that it was an and. Conversation you,
- 10:21Speaker 1: KNOW i we really like to do a deal with that.
- 10:23Speaker 1: Guy and here's the bonus or and you know so,
- 10:27Speaker 1: anyway that's my bonus clip here for this, week the
- 10:31Speaker 1: anatomy of a, deal overcoming bias at the negotiating, end closing,
- 10:36Speaker 1: table and turning a negative into a. Positive it made me, stronger, better,
- 10:41Speaker 1: wiser more, thoughtful less, emotional more, focused found a new,
- 10:46Speaker 1: friend bridged you, know uncommon, interest and moved on with my.
- 10:52Speaker 1: Life and it's clearly kept growing and kept succeeding in
- 10:59Speaker 1: spite Of if not because of, you don't love because of,
- 11:03Speaker 1: you love because of, you wouldn't even love. Yourself maybe
- 11:05Speaker 1: you love and live in spite of in spite of, disappointments,
- 11:08Speaker 1: frustrations people messing over. You you can step over mess and
