- 0:00SPEAKER_00: The lights turned amber.
- 0:01SPEAKER_00: It's just about to turn red.
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: Subconsciously, our mind is telling us to stop and hit the brakes.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: Don't proceed.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: Welcome to Simplified Sparky Marketing.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: There's been some interesting insights lately inside with my members, and one of them that I think it's extremely valuable.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: And what I want you to take away from this podcast is if you are somebody with red in your logo to reconsider a few things or your branding.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: And if you're a dead set going to use red heavily in your logo, this podcast may make you reconsider that, unfortunately.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: One of my members is doing his website, it's actually live at the moment.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: And hats off to that member, he's going to be listening, he knows who he is.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Took extreme action and went from zero website to a live website in less than a month.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: Insane.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: But it's just because it was templated, it was everything was there.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: He just had to piece it together and he put in some crazy good work, including photos, wording, all the structure that it's all A1.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: What we're talking about today is the colour red, and in his logo, he has got blue, white, and red.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: White is the background, and there is the symbol is in blue and red.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: Now, when he was making the website, he went to me and he was I worked with him through the website of little bits and pieces and critiques, and I'm raw as I am in the podcast, and I will say if something looks horrible or it doesn't look right.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: So we went through the podcast.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: There was a few things on it, like a scrolling banner, which I hated.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: Said to him to get rid of that, it doesn't look nice, and there's no need for it.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: It's it's kind of draw the attention, it looks cheap, it looks weird, it looks off.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: But the worst thing that caught my eye was he did a few changes and he came back to me again, and I looked at it and I was like, something looks fucking terrible here.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: I can't quite put my finger on it.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: And what it was, and this is this is probably giving too much away to other end users, but the call to action buttons red, they were red, and I was like, why does that just look fucking wrong?
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: Why do those red buttons look really, really off?
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: The logo, everything looks really cool.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: I love the logo because it's like subtly red and blue inside and white.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: And when I looked at the website and looked at the call to action button, so the call to action buttons are your call now or send an inquiry.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: The inquiry one was red, and I was like, I fucking don't do not like that.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: And the reason is it's it's a subconscious thing.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: Red is such a subconscious thing of stop, do not go.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: But why people, before I get into that, why people choose red, and I can totally see this happening, it almost happened to me.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: It almost happened to me because where I hail from is mighty cork in Ireland, and the colours of Cork are red and white, and my initial original logo was actually red and white, and like many of you listening are totally unaware of this whole red psychology, but I nearly went to it red, and the reason I chose the colour for my electrical business, which is kind of like a light green and white, predominantly are the colours, is I was in McDonald's when I was starting my company, and I had like the little foam cup or whatever the hell it is now, paper, and I was looking at the colours and I was like, that is a fucking cool green, and therefore my logo colour was chosen on born, and that's why I went with that.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: And I'm so fucking glad I didn't go red and yellow from the McDonald's branding as well.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: But it just happened to be, I think it was white and green, it was like a cup or a design that was on it, and I was like, that looks fucking cool.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: So I went with it, and I'm really glad I did.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: It's something I don't have any regret with.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: Something that I actually managed not to fuck up was I I like my logo and I like my branding, and I'm very happy with that.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: And as I said, this podcast is hopefully going to prevent you going with a lot of predominant red.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: So, why people choose red on their logo as well?
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: It's it's it's related to a lot of things.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: So you've got sporting teams.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: Let's say, for instance, you're a Manchester United fan, you're a Liverpool fan, Sydney Swans fan, you're a St.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: George Illawarra Dragons fan.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: All of these things usually end up why people choose red.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: It could be like me, it could be where you're from.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: If you're Macedonian, you might want red and white in your in your branding, and that's totally fine.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: But that's kind of where where a lot of it comes from.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: Because it is a difficult thing choosing colours that you like that are going to be associated with your brand.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: Now, some people go down the beaten track and they choose colours of like high-end branding and stuff like that, which is probably it's not it's not the wrong thing to do.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: You look at like the deep green of Rolex is also associate associated with the British racing green, um, which is a pretty funky colour, it's just like a very dark green.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: But what I'm going to be getting into is like the types of colours, what they mean, and why people warm to those colours as such.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: But what red actually means, have a think about it.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: Have a think about all the things you see every day in your day-to-day business of what's what's jarring, what you're not meant to do.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: If you think about it, stop sight stop signs, red lights, emergency push buttons, emergency stop buttons, break glass in case of emergency, fire, blood, the list continues.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: It it's subconsciously in our heads.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: If we see red, it's stop and do not take action.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: And that is why it's so important that specifically call-to-action buttons on your website should not be red.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: And I remember many years ago I was part of a training or a coaching program, if you could even call it that.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: It was an American guy many, many years ago, and he actually did a lot of A-B testing on his website, and he reckoned that blue was the best call-to-action colour to have on a button.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: Now, if your website or your branding doesn't have blue in it, blue can look fucked on your website if you choose to do that now because you're listening to what I say in the podcast.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: So don't just go ahead and change all your buttons to blue on the website because that's I'm just saying this off the cuff.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: It doesn't necessarily work.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: It's what some Yank told me.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: The colours that people warm to are the likes of blue.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: So blue from my research means trust, security, stability, and professionalism.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: Most successful call to actions are blue.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: Blue calms the nervous system.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: Green is for growth, health, and positive action.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: It's the go signal.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: You think traffic lights, it's go.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: Green is go.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: Green is also associated with renewal and safety.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: White, like grey, is clean, professional, neutral.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: I love a lot of white.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: I'm a big white guy, and that's why they call clean space on websites white, because the less noise, the less clutter, the more white you've got on the website, the more it draws the attention to the thing you actually want them to see.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: Too many websites I see are extremely busy with just crap, and I always rewind it back to it's a web developer that doesn't know marketing or he doesn't know psychology of like how a buyer buys.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: They're just like, This looks cool, let's shove this in here.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: It will validate the work I'm doing in their website.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: White is also associated that it doesn't trigger emotion, it's high contrast and very readable, which is what I just mentioned.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: Orange is energy enthusiasm friendly, less aggressive than red, and still draws attention.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: That says to avoid neon.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: So I'm presuming like bright yellows and stuff like that, bright pink, can be quite jarring.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: And it also says avoid pure black.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: Now, if you've gone ahead and built your entire website and it's red and white, for example, or it's red, white, and black as the usual colours, it might be red and yellow.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: Do not panic.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: All you have to do is minimize the red a little bit on your website.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: So if your predominant colour is red, lose a bit of the red, use the other colours in your branding because as I said, it it can be a deterrent, it can be jarring.
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: But what I want you to what I don't want you to do is panic and think you need a full rebrand.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: You do not need a full rebrand, you just need to wind the red back a little bit if you can.
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: And the key thing, as I said at the start of this podcast, is I want to prevent somebody from doing this.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: And I really hope that someone listening to this is on the brink of starting a business and they were considering red, and you are most likely throwing the red in the bin now, and that is entirely up to you what you want to do.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: If you want to stick with red, by all means use red.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: This is just purely a psychological thing.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: It may have no effect on your end user, but it's just something that is out there, and if you think about it, it makes a lot of sense.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: There's a lot of backup in it.
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: But if you haven't started an electrical business, you have got this advantage that you can make this right from day dot.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: And just think carefully before you pick one colour that's going to be your dominant colour and ask yourself like, how do I actually want people to feel?
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: Do you want to be trusted, reliable, professional?
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: That'll be blue, white, and green.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: But if you love red, by all means use it, but just wind it down a little bit.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: Where a lot of electricians' heads go is you choose red to stand out.
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: You choose red that you think it's going to get attention, but it's getting attraction and attention for the wrong reasons.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: It's subconsciously stopping them from pressing that button.
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: Maybe not necessarily.
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: Maybe they'll traw your website and they'll go back out.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: Even they don't know why, but it's just because of that red reaction.
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: These little one percenters are the little things I love to work on on websites to make the small little tweaks.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: If your homepage is currently only converting at 10% of the people that land on your website and it's now at 15%, you have made a 50% increase on your conversion rate of people that land on your website.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: That's all from me.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: I will catch you next week with the next one.
